Yusung Study Group

     In General 
  • Age-Appropriate Angst: All of them (probably aside from Jun) shown to have worries about entering college.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Most of the members of the study group received bullying and isolation from their classmates even before entering highschool.
  • Bittersweet 17: Most of the members are 17 years old freshmen that stuck in the Yusung High but still wishes to study properly despite of the troubles they encountered.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Whenever a member of the group is in danger, the rest will always show up to save them.
  • You Meddling Kids: Sometimes receives this from the members of White Lead.
  • Troubled Teens: When they saved Jun from White Lead, they nearly got arrested for assault. Thankfully, Detective Na understood the situation and decided to let them go home.

The protagonist. The usually reserved and shy leader-founder of Yusung Study Group. Despite of his nerd looks and very diligent in his studies, his test scores was the lowest compared to the other members of the group. And yet, because of his aptitude in martial arts (Jeet Kune Do) he is one of the best fighters of their school. He voluntarily enrolled in Yusung High in hopes of entering in a 4-year college by becoming a honor student. He also dreams of building a study group filled with students with same goal with him of entering college and to help him raise his low scores.

Currently the unofficial No. 1 in Freshmen when it comes to fighting. Most of the students calls him The Monster but Hanwul and his lackeys calls Gamin the Bullfrog.note 

Gamin used to be the 217th/220 in test score ranking.


  • The Ace: When it comes to fighting, no one could beat Gamin as he is talented and trained martial arts for years. His test scores however...
  • All of the Other Reindeer: While Gamin seems never received physical bullying in his middle school, he was started to get subtly mocked and avoided by his classmates because he announced that his dream is to be the first placer in their school exams and he failed to achieve that as he was in the last place.
  • Action Hero: He likes to solve things by beating the ones who causing the problem.
  • Badass Bookworm: Zigzagged. While Gamin is a nerd and reads lots of books, he's usually a Book Dumb who can't retain the knowledge from most of the books he read. Despite of it, he values knowledge as he views it stronger than physical strength.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Gamin used to be quiet and likes to stay low to avoid fights. Everything changes however after he saved his former tutor-now homeroom teacher Miss Lee from the classmates who doesn't know him because he's too quiet at class. Many of his classmates surprised at him when they saw him snapped at Jaehwang for burning Sehyun's book filled with study notes.
  • Berserk Button: Never hurt his friends, his teacher, or his mother. Or you will receive his wrath.
    • This applies to Yusung students later on too.
    • You must not speak the word 'study' after the test results came out. When he lost self-control for a while, Gamin almost unconsciously used the unseen yet Uncle's Forbidden Technique No.10 to Siwan.
  • Book Dumb: Much to his frustrations that despite he studies so hard and dreams to become number 1 at exams since middle school, Gamin is this.
    • As of season 2, thanks to his study group, this might not be longer the case as he managed to jump from 217th/220 to 110th/220.
  • Bruce Lee Clone: Bowl cut black hair, very quiet, knows how to do JKD, and likes to use nunchuks sometimes. However, he doesn't shout while fighting. Since middle school, Gamin likes to buy books about Bruce Lee.
  • Bystander Syndrome: He used to be like this before Hankyeong became his homeroom teacher.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: He usually dresses like a nerd but don't let that fool you as beneath that clothes, he has well-toned body.
  • Combat Pragmatist: As a practitioner of Jeet Kune Do, he doesn't hesitate to use his Uncle's 2nd Forbidden Technique: Unfair Play. Using this means Gamin doesn't hesitate to use dirty tactics to his opponents. This includes poking the eyes, kicking the crotch, pulling the hair, etc. However, he will only use this when he's cornered.
  • Comically Missing the Point: A running joke involves him declaring his need to study in the middle of tense situations.
  • Creature of Habit: Gamin likes to stick on his everyday routine, especially when it's (secretly) exercising at morning and studying before sleep.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Dark hair and his eyes goes darker when furious. Even when he doesn't wear his uniform while fighting, his clothes are usually in black colors. But even with dark theme, he fights for the good.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: The Uncle's Forbidden Technique series. Gamin's uncle named some of his attacks as UFT because those attacks can overpower his uncle. While most of the UFT moves doesn't hurt him or drain his stamina rapidly, Gamin rarely use these moves. The currently known UFT moves are:
    • No. 1: One Way Attack
    • No. 2: Unfair Play
    • No. 4: Zero Inch Punch
    • No. 5: Return of the 5th Dragon Yungak
    • No. 6: Big Boss Dragon Kick
    • No. 7: Fist of Fury Jump Kick
    • No. 8: Game of Death Nunchuck Smoke
  • Death Glare: As series goes on, he's prone more to sharply glare to his enemies.
    • When he was younger he already doing this but only to his paternal grandparents.
  • Determinator: Despite he always keeps on getting low scores, he never gives up on studying to the point of obsession. Even after a depressing or tiring day, Gamin will make sure his day wouldn't end without studying.
  • Disappeared Dad: Gamin's parents divorced when he was young. Nowadays he lives with his mother. Gamin blames himself for the divorce as it implies that his low school performance was the reason why they divorced.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Usually when he gets furious, his eyes doesn't shine and become darker.
  • Early Personality Signs: Since when he was younger, Gamin shown to be deeply upset and angry about his exam results.
  • Finger Poke of Doom: He flicked Homin's forehead after the latter was 'lost' to the Rock–Paper–Scissors game. The flick was so strong that Homin recoiled and his forehead had a straight line mark that stayed for days.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Slightly towards to Jun when it comes to studies.
  • The Glasses Come Off: When things gets more serious, Gamin takes off his glasses.
  • Good Eyes, Evil Eyes: Gamin's eyes become tareme-like when he's happy especially when it's about studying. But his eyes becomes sharp and deadly sometimes when he's serious or furiously cold angry.
  • Instant Chucks: He made a nunchucks from a chain he used as defensive weapon and a wood that almost hit against him. However, he cannot use it with his UTF move.
  • It's All My Fault: Deeply blames himself about the divorce of his parents as it implies that they broke off because of Gamin's school performance.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers from this after Gunyeob told him that his missing teacher might be dead now. Gamin spends his night in despairing until his uncle comfort and told him that there's still a chance that she still alive.
  • High Hopes, Zero Talent: He always dream to become number 1 in school exams but he lacks aptitude in academics.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: His uncle said that Gamin wants to have better scores and has obsession to studying because Gamin is competitive and stubborn against 'the him who is bad at studying'.
  • The Leader: Sehyun refers him as the leader of their study group.
    • In season 2, the leaders of other schools views him as the leader of Yusung faction after defeating Hanwul and became the unofficial Number 1. However, he said that has no desires to be one and also has no interest of ruling the schools they defeated. Jun noticed this and took leader role of Yusung High after he defeated Taeo Kang and gain the official Number 1 status.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Alongside with his uncle, Gamin is the strongest character in Study Group without any present weaknesses. His attacks are described as fluid and brutal.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: In his backstory and the start of the story, Gamin used to be a loner because he was shunned for his very low scores and later on Yusung High he stays low because he avoids to be noticed by the delinquents. After saving his teacher and Sehyun from troubles, Gamin realizes the study group he dreamed can be real now as long he can protect his friends and his teacher.
  • Minor Living Alone: When Gamin's mother got heavily injured and was hospitalized, he lives alone for days until his mom recovers.
    • In season 2, Gamin lives alone for days again when his mother went to America for her work. When Gamin's uncle learns that his sister's abroad, he decided to live there for awhile.
  • Madness Mantra: Gamin cannot concentrate and his thoughts just repeating during his first fight against Siwan because of his low midterm test results.

  • My Beloved Smother: Gamin's overprotective and doting mother, Mihyun Jeon. She barely let Gamin to study in Yusung High as long he will go home before the curfew hours or else, he will be transferred to another school immediately. Mihyun doesn't mind that Gamin can't enter college because of his poor performance in exams as long Gamin will grow up as a kind person as always he is.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He shows sometimes his lean athletic body while doing workout routine in mornings. In Season 1 finale, he unzipped his sportsjacket before brutally attacks Hanwul.
  • Oblivious to Love: Minhee has massive crush on him and mistook Gamin's selfless actions as a form of showing affection to her. But as usual, he is too dense to notice her feelings as he's very focused with his studies and still searching for his missing teacher.
  • One-Man Army: Gamin singlehandedly defeated an army of students who trapped him inside of their new school gym.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Gamin was introduced as an ordinary student who just want to study hard until the part where he decided to save Miss Lee...
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: Gamin doesn't really need to wear glasses but he views the nerds in his middle school as role models so he wears one. In season 2, he even has reserves of the same glasses at home in case his current one was lost or broken.
  • The Quiet One: Gamin noted to be the 'super quiet kid' by his classmates. Heck, he doesn't even talk too much especially about himself unless if he feels to or someone ask him some questions.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": His reaction after Jaehwang burned the math book that Sehyun filled with study notes.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Gamin's Character Tic is to push his Nerd Glasses in this way while studying, showing enthusiasm, planning something, or delivering heavy blows.
  • Slasher Smile: He smiled widely while defeating the 3-Chul using the Unfair Play move.
  • Sore Loser: Because of his competitive nature, he has shades of this. Gamin acts childish and whiny when he got low exam scores.
  • Spell My Name With An S: 윤: Yoon? Yun? Youn? In fan translated version, it's Yoon as it's the common romanization. While in Ylab official site, it's Yun. However in official English translation and merchandise, it's Youn.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Besides Heewon and probably Jun, Gamin is the only member of the study group that undeniably rich because his mother that usually spoils him and assures that he doesn't need to attend college is the director of Korea's Taekwondo Association and his absentee father is a highly respected person for medical field. It also implied in the flashbacks that he used to live in a lavish home before his parents divorced but now lives in a secure apartment area in Songdo, Incheon. Despite of these, he's one of the most good-natured students of Yusung.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Kind of mysterious, has dark hair and his height (5'10) is more than average in Korea (5'7). Some girls noted that he's fairly attractive.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: His uncle jokingly asked Gamin if he can defeat the gangsters without killing them. Gamin took it as a joke and he replied that he doesn't plan to skip college.
  • Tranquil Fury: He's usually quieter and has ice-cold fury when he's fighting.
  • Victory Is Boring: He said this after using Unfair Play to defeat the 3-chul.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Heavily implied that Gamin studying hard and has obsession on it because he wants to impress his father. His study table even has a picture frame of his dad and younger self wearing togas.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Gamin's father from abroad called him after the incident with his mother happened. Gamin asked his father if he could go home now but his father said no.

     Hankyeong Lee

Gamin and Sehyun's math and homeroom (contractual) teacher. Hankyeong is also the club advisor of Yusung Study and used to be Gamin's personal tutor when he was in middle school. Despite being number 1 in Teacher Certification Test and lots of school offered her, she rejected those and chose Yusung High for personal reasons.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: She likes to give one to Gamin when she's praising him.
  • Badass Teacher: Despite getting harmed and stabbed by some of her students and getting threats from Hanwul, she still has the guts to continually attend her classes and hopefully make the school into a better place.
  • Comforting Comforter: Receives one from Gamin after she got bullied by her other students. Though it's more likely he just put his jacket on her so it wouldn't get dirty while fighting the bullies.
  • Cool Teacher: Everyone in the Study Group views Hankyeong as this. Jun even calls her as 'God Teacher'.
  • Empty Eyes: Her high school teacher noted that Hankyeong's eyes used to be depressed in her high school days.
  • Plucky Girl: The threats and dangers she faced won't stop her to make her late teacher's dream to make Yusung a school safe and suitable to study for students.
  • Private Tutor: Before Hankyeong became a teacher, she used to be Gamin's personal tutor hired by his mother. Hankyeong stopped tutoring him after the murder of her beloved high school teacher happened.
  • Put on the Bus: The plot point of season 2. Hankyeong was missing after she learned the truth about the White Lead's head, Yonbaek Phi, and was fired from her work. Because of her disapperance, the Yusung Study as a school club was disbanded.
  • Team Mom: As the advisor of Yusung Study, Hankyeong makes sure that the group studies properly, gives them good advices about it, and she wants to protect them by trying to expel Hanwul out of the school.
  • Sensei-chan: Hankyeong has definitely shades of this as she just recently became a teacher.

     Sehyun Kim 

Sehyun Kim

Gamin's classmate and the second member of Yusung Study Group. Sehyun is timid person but also the smartest and highest ranking in the group when it comes to academics. Sehyun joined the study group in exchange of protection against from bullies.

Sehyun used to be the 3rd/220 in test score ranking.


  • The Ace: He's the third placer in overall ranking in Yusung High. After midterms, He even became the number 1 alongside with Homin Kim.
  • Abusive Parents: His father throws a bottle to him after showing his high placement in school because his father doesn't want him to enter college because of the financial instability and encourages him to learn trade or become a construction worker instead much to his dismay.
  • Book Smart: He's the best member in the Study Group when it comes to academics. And later on, in the whole school.
  • Brains and Brawn: Aside from Heewon, the only Brains of the study group.
  • Challenging the Bully: In season 1 finale arc, Sehyun beat one of Hanwul's allies, Jaehwang Chu, who bullied him at the start of the story.
  • Friends Are Chosen, Family Aren't: It became more apparent when he ran away from his father's house and chose to live temporarily in Jun's home.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: Just like Gamin, he used to be a loner in Yusung to stay unnoticeable. But after being saved by Gamin and formed the study group with him, he became no longer a loner.
  • Non-Action Guy: Alongside with Heewon and Hankyeong, Sehyun is the only member of the group that is not a fighter and the in charge to the Mission Control role with Heewon.
    • In past midway of first season however, he started to learn Taekwondo with the help of Gamin's mother.
  • The Runaway: Sehyun left his father after he can't take the abuse anymore. He decided to live with Jun in the meantime.
  • Shonen Hair: Jiwoo calls him Spikey because of his wild, spikey haircut.
  • Use Your Head: As Sehyun is inexperienced and weak, Gamin advised him to use a headbutt as a finisher move.

     Heewon Choi

Jiwoo's classmate and the third shy yet resourceful member of the Study Group. Heewon joined the group after Gamin and Sehyun saved Jiwoo from potential scandal about Jiwoo's brother.

Heewon used to be the 162nd/220 in test score ranks.


  • Bully Magnet: She's getting bullied even before high school. It only stopped when Jiwoo protects her but it continued again after Jiwoo was blackmailed and bullied by Gyujin.
  • Crush Blush: Heewon blushed in awe when she learned that Sehyun is one of the top students of Yusung.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine
  • Nice Girl
  • Non-Action Guy: The only member in the Study Group with no fighting skills. However, this doesn't stop her from helping the group by other means.
  • Ship Tease: Gets some shades of this with Sehyun.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Jiwoo's tomboy.

     Jiwoo Lee 

Jiwoo Lee

The brash fourth member of the Study Group. Heewon's classmate and Hyeonu's hot-blooded twin sister. Joined the study group after being saved by Gamin and Sehyun from her ex-boyfriend Gyujin's plan to spread a video scandal about Hyeonu's delinquency. A judo practioner.

Jiwoo used to be the 180th/220 in test score ranking.


     Jun Lee

The fifth member of Study Group. Jun is a person who is passionate about fighting delinquents. Joined the study group originally because he want to learn how to fight effectively from Gamin. Gamin refuses unless he took studying seriously. Jun officially joined the group after being saved from White Lead faction.

Jun used to be the 132nd/220 in test score ranking.


  • Delinquent: The only (former) delinquent member of the Study Group. Before Sunchul joined, anyway.
  • Dumb Is Good: Calls himself this when he goes to the White Lead's recruitment. Ironically, see the Hidden Depths below.
  • Eye Pop: Jun did this with Jaw Drop after getting scared on how Gamin reacted when he told the latter that he will study properly to join the club.
  • Fragile Speedster: One of the fastest students of Yusung, however at first season he tend to lose because Gamin imposed a rule that he must not use his fists in a battle. Thankfully, he's getting better each time.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Views Gamin as his master and rival when it comes to fighting. But for Gamin, it's about studying.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Jun admitted he got tempted by the car offered by White Lead when he was nearly recruited while pretending to be Gamin. Fortunately, he chose the 'Friend' and later to be saved by the Study Group.
  • Fiery Redhead: Alongside with Jiwoo, Jun and her are both redheads and the noisy members of the group.
  • Hidden Depths: Surprisingly, he's actually the second smartest in the study group especially when it comes to Mathematics.
  • The Leader: Jun became the official number one of Yusung High after defeating Taeo Kang in a official match. He took the leader role in order to protect the students, these includes from other schools they conquered, from the bullies and to keep the spirit of Yusung High.
  • The Nicknamer: Jun likes to call Miss Lee as 'Goddess Teacher' and Gamin as his Master.
  • Red Is Heroic: Jun's a redhead and his color code in the group.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The loud Red Oni to Gamin's quiet Blue Oni.

     Sunchul Kim 

Sunchul Kim

The sixth member of Study Group and the only non first-year member.
  • Animal Motifs: His style of fighting involves the usage of various tiger motifs.
  • Anti-Villain: His first appearance involves fighting against Gamin. However, he is quick to accept defeat and is rather friendly with him the next time they meet. His entire reason for originally being Hanwul's lackey was to raise money for his grandfather's hospital treatment.
  • The Big Guy: The biggest and tallest member of Yusung Study.
  • Delinquent: He's a former delinquent.
  • Frameup: Hanwul convinced Jaehwang's father to use Sunchul as the cover for the crime he (Jaehwang's father) did.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: His demeanour and status as a delinquent hides the fact that he is quick to protect those close to him.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Was raised by his grandfather, who later pushes him to join the study group.
  • Student Council President: He's the head of student council of Yusung High. Until Siwon replaced him as Hanwul's attempt to stop Miss Lee's actions.
