This page covers both Nekomew's Potty Trouble and Nekomew's Nightmares since both games have just about everybody in them, except for a few minor characters.

The Main Cast

    Nekomew

Nekomew

A four-year-old kitten (soon five) who just moved into a new home with his adoptive family, having suffered terrible things before being adopted. He has traumatic nightmares and is terrified to go to the bathroom at night.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: He didn't know anybody at the foster care faculty he was at before being adopted, and a certain trio of wolf pups seemed to pick on him during his stay. Luckily, he at least had a kindly duckling for a playmate, until they were adopted.
  • Catapult Nightmare: He wakes up like this every time in Nekomew's Potty Trouble, and as part of a game over sequence in Nekomew's Nightmares.
  • Cute Kitten: Obviously, he's a four-year-old, too!
  • Disappeared Dad: From his perspective, his former dad was under a car, then taken away by an ambulance never to come home again. We learn in Nekomew's Nightmares that his former dad was hit by a car when he tried to get Nekomew who crossed the street on his own, and died as a result.
  • Heroic Mime: He never says anything, possibly justified by both experiences and young age.
  • Kid Hero: He's four years old, making him a very young protagonist.
  • Pajama-Clad Hero: He's always in a starry nightshirt and nightcap, mainly because what happens in both games occurs in the middle of the night, or his dreams respectively.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: For his own dad!, after the lizard left the door open, Nekomew out of curiosity walked across the street to a nearby construction site, his dad realized and rushed over to get him only to get hit with a car.

    The Doll

The Doll

A rag doll cat that accompanies Nekomew to the bathroom and in his nightmares.

  • Companion Cube: A magical floating glowing rag doll who aids Nekomew.
  • Disney Death: He suffers this in the "Awakening" level in Nightmares by the hands of Nekomew's former mom. He gets better, even giving him an 1-Up during the Mum nightmare!
  • He Knows About Timed Hits: He knows how to deal with the nightmares that haunt Nekomew, such as stepping to the rhythm of Ms. Paloma's rocking chair to avoid her noticing Nekomew.
  • Light 'em Up: He flashes quite a handful of the nightmares with his light.
  • Living Toys: He's a sentient rag doll, obviously.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: It's unclear if it's just Nekomew's imagination or if the doll is alive at night, and how he can glow despite nothing mechanical about him ever being seen.

     Nekomew's new Mom and Dad

The dog couple that adopted Nekomew as their son, along with him move to a new home somewhere and plan to be a happy family.

  • Big Friendly Dog: They're both anthropomorphic dogs that are Nekomew's adopted parents and they are very nice.
  • Good Parents: Even though they adopted Nekomew, they treat him very well.
  • Happily Adopted: They adopted Nekomew and treat them as well as if he were their biological son.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Quite obvious with Nekomew, who's a kitten.
  • Parents as People: Or adoptive Funny Animal people. They genuinely worry about Nekomew's mental well-being and plan on having him see a psychologist, and they have a solid relationship and try their best to be a happy family.
  • Papa Wolf: And Mama Wolf, both literally! They get out of their house that's suddenly set on fire in Potty Trouble, after Nekomew jumps to get to them.

Monsters

     General
  • All Just a Dream: They're all just nightmares... Except for the last one.
  • Halloween Cosplay: For the Halloween nightmare introduced for the games first anniversary, all the nightmares are dressing up as each other! Except for the Car which seems to be a dragon or a demon, and of course the final nightmare.
  • Leitmotif: They all have their own music and instruments, for example the Carer has this buzzing like sound in hers, the Car has horns, including car horns for obvious reasons.
  • No Name Given: Only Ms. Paloma and The Clown (Pierro) avert this. Everybody else's name is a mystery, but the Car would probably not have a name anyway.
  • Palette Swap: All the nightmares get a tasteful birthday skin for "Happy Birthday...?". Also, the Car and Carer are the only two to get three skins! They also get Halloween-themed costumes for the Halloween 2023 level.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Ms. Paloma and the Car are the only expectations.
  • Your Worst Memory: They're all Nekomew's memories of his past, distorted into monsters wanting to scare him. Except the last one, who might be actively trying to find him.

     Ms.Paloma

Ms. Paloma

"Come with me, we'll find you a new home."
A pigeon in charge of a foster care system. She used to be a friend in Nekomew's old family.
  • A Dog Named "Dog" / Meaningful Name: "Paloma" is essentially the word "Pigeon" in Spanish.
  • Don't Wake the Sleeper / Sleepy Enemy: Implied or at least downplayed, as Nekomew has to step to the rhythm of her rocking chair or the meter to avoid being jumpscared by her.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Nekomew has to obviously step very carefully in front of her, but she might be half asleep which is why she doesn't notice if you step to the rhythm, as Nekomew's footsteps might possibly be muffled by the sound of her rocking chair.
  • Palette Swap: She dresses up as the Nurse in the Halloween 2023 level.
  • Starter Villain: She's the first monster you face in both games, she's very easy to deal with.

     The Car

The Car

"I didn't see h..."
A car monster. It's the car that hit Nekomew's dad and ended his life in a accident.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: It's a living car monster, and it's the only nightmare that isn't a living being.
  • Car Fu: It tries to run over Nekomew itself. Nekomew can dodge it though.
  • Look Both Ways: This is why it's haunting Nekomew in his dreams, his dad was hit and killed when trying to get him when he crossed the street all by his own.
  • Sinister Car: Obviously.
  • Starter Villain: About as easy to handle as Ms. Paloma and the Photographer. If you take to account Ms. Paloma started visiting after Nekomew's former dad was hit by this car, this nightmare is chronologically the first!
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Not the car itself says this, but it's unknown driver almost says this word-to-word in the intro nightmare for it in Potty Trouble.
  • Palette Swap: One of two monsters to receive three! One for The Nurse nightmare as an ambulance, another for "Happy Birthday...?". It also dresses up as the evil mom in the Halloween 2023 level.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The driver of this car hit Nekomew's dad who was trying to get his kid who crossed the street after his coworker left the door open. The driver didn't see him in time, leading to an horrible accident that took the father's life.
  • Would Hurt a Child: It has no qualms trying to hit Nekomew.

     The Photographer

The Photographer

"Get out of here!"
An implied grumpy photographer penguin who wields a camera.
  • Camera Fiend: Is a Photographer after all! His main mechanic is his camera as the number of times he flashes you, the number of times you have to move to the opposite side. In Potty Trouble, you have to close your eyes to avoid being blinded by him.
  • Jerkass: The one thing he says after he spots Nekomew close by the day Nekomew's dad was hit and killed by a car is "Get out of here!", but he may have been trying to not have Nekomew scarred from seeing the whole ordeal, though.
  • Palette Swap: He dresses up as the Clown in the Halloween 2023 level.
  • Press Hat: It's implied with the one line from Nekomew's Potty Trouble that he might be a journalist, but he DOES have one dapper top hat.
  • Starter Villain: He, The Car and Ms. Paloma can be considered this, as they are all part of the "A New Beginning" nightmare.

     The Policeman

The Policeman

"Here you are!"
An anglerfish... Well, policeman that Ms. Paloma brought with her to Nekomew's old house to get him away from his former mom.

     The Carer

The Carer

"Too bad she's not here..."
A wasp caretaker, she works at the orphanage or foster care faculty Nekomew was in before he got adopted.
  • Airborne Mook: She's the only monster that can fly, and she's fast.
  • Face of a Thug: Her face... Well, it's not as bad as the Policeman's but still can be unnerving.
  • Wicked Wasps: Inverted, she was actually tiding up the room and keeping an eye on the children, Nekomew might be just having nightmares about her because of her fast flying scarring him and possibly her frightening face.
  • Palette Swap: Like the car, she gets three! One for her "Return of" nightmare and of course "Happy Birthday...?". She also dresses up as the Photographer in the Halloween 2023 level.
  • Magic Wand: It's obviously a toy one, but she has one for her "Return of" skin.

     The Nurse

The Nurse

"It doesn't work."
A mouse nurse who tried to revive Nekomew's former dad after he got hit with a car, but failed.
  • Ambiguous Gender: It's hard to tell if the nurse is male or female because they have eyelashes, but it's implied the nurse is male.
  • Flashy Teleportation: He can teleport in Nekomew's Nightmares on the left, right and even above Nekomew and he manifests out of purple energy. It makes sense because it's all a nightmare. But in Nekomews' Potty Trouble the lights go on for a moment when you see him a few times before you have to flash him to avoid a jumpscare. In both games it comes with a horror chord.
  • A Mischief of Mice: Not the case. But in Nekomew's head it is probably the case, as he seen him give his former dad CPR by chest compressions. He views it as him squishing his chest.
  • Palette Swap: He dresses up as the Policeman in the Halloween 2023 level.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: A teleporting capable nightmare sporting these, his sclerae are even black!
  • Rat Men: A mouse nurse.
  • Slasher Smile: Sports this creepy grin that's open all the time.

     The Clown

The Clown

"Hey, little boy! It's Pierro!"
A poodle clown known as Pierro, he was trying to cheer up Nekomew after his mom got angry and that landed him in the hospital, implying she did something to him.
  • Dirty Coward: In Potty Trouble, if he's far enough, just turning around to see him is enough to send him packing. He's even described as a "Pretty cowardly character" by the ragdoll.
  • In-Series Nickname: He happens to be called Pierro the Clown.
  • Meaningful Name: His stage name Pierro is literally one letter away from "Pierrot", which is usually portrayed as a jester or clown.
  • Monster Clown: Inverted, he was actually trying to get Nekomew to tell him what happened that landed him in the hospital.
  • Nightmare Retardent: He is meant to be a scary clown, but his mannerisms and derpy eyes can just make him look dorky. He might accidently be literal nightmare fuel to Nekomew.
  • Palette Swap: Ironically and comically downplayed for him. For "Happy Birthday...?", he just gets a party hat! Played straight in the Halloween 2023 level however, where he dresses up as the Carer.
  • Psycho Poodle: He's a poodle clown with red bloodshot eyes almost always in a derpy expression. Subverted, though, as he was trying to calm Nekomew down and tell him what happened.

     The final Nightmare (UNMARKED SPOILERS!

Nekomew's former mom

"You're the next..."
Nekomew's biological mom, or former mom as she lost custody of him after spiraling into depression and ended up abusing both of her children after the death of her husband.

  • Abusive Parents: She's this after Nekomew's dad was hit and killed by a car after trying to get Nekomew who crossed the street on his own. She wasn't the case before Nekomew's dad died.
  • Alcoholic Parent: Heavily implied with all the bottles lying around her home in Nightmares, and in the room during the Whispers levels.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Is she really after getting custody of Nekomew back by any means? Or is it really just Nekomew's terrified imagination convincing him she is? And also, is she really doing some supernatural things to try and do so?
  • Cats Are Mean: Justified, she only acted very abusive towards her own children because her husband died in a car crash while he was trying to get Nekomew.
  • Cats Are Magic: Maybe. She is seen using magic briefly in Nightmares, and in a secret cutscene in Potty Trouble might be the start of her practicing this. Although in Nightmares, it IS in... Well, a nightmare.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She gets mentioned over and over again, then when her level finally arrives she is revealed to be the main antagonist of BOTH games, being revealed to be abusive AND what scares Nekomew the most.
  • Driven to Villainy / Tragic Villain: The death of her husband clearly didn't do her any favors with her mental well-being.
  • Final Boss: For both Potty Trouble and Nightmares, she's still this in the extra levels in both games. This has reason to it because... Well, she didn't treat Nekomew or his sister very well after the death of her husband, making it her that scares Nekomew more than any of the other monsters.
  • For Halloween, I Am Going as Myself: This is probably the case for her in the Halloween nightmare added in, she's already a demonic cat!
  • Game-Over Man: She's tastefully only this in the last levels that have her in them.
  • Good Parents: Well, she was before the car accident that took her husband's life. As seen in her memory where the family is relaxing in a field of flowers peacefully.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: She might be dabbling in the dark arts solely to get her son back, but it might be something else entirely.
  • Nintendo Hard: Her story (Potty Trouble AND Nightmares) and "Return of" levels can be this, especially during the sequences where you have to get across to the other side of the room without being spotted by her before it's too late.
  • Nightmare Weaver: Might be the result in her dabbling in black magic.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: The ending of Nekomew's Nightmares as her come into view outside the house shortly after her level is beaten.
  • Palette Swap: Unlike all the other nightmares, she doesn't get one. Not even during the Halloween 2023 nightmare.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Even more so than The Car, which was.. Well, a car monster imagined after Nekomew's dad was hit and killed by the same (though obviously not living) car. She actively abused both of her children. And is most likely responsible for kidnapping other children in the neighborhood who ruin themselves.
  • Yandere: She's this to Nekomew, platonically for obvious reasons.

Supporting Characters

     Nekomew's former dad

Nekomew's former dad

Nekomew's biological dad, who worked as a handyman fixing sink pipes. Nekomew hadn't seen him since he was hit by a car and taken to hospital, confirming he's dead.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: He may not play as much of a role as Nekomew's mom, but his death is what spiraled his wife into depression to the point of abusing their two children, with Nekomew being taken away by Ms. Paloma while the sister's fate is... a mystery.
  • Disappeared Dad: To Nekomew, he simply never came back home after Being taken to the hospital by ambulance after getting hit by a car. And he's not comin' back.
  • Good Parents: When he was around, Nekomew's former family was quite a happy and very much normal one. On the fateful day tragedy stuck, he noticed Nekomew crossing the street on his own and tried to get him, only for misfortune to strike.

     The hooded kitten (SPOILERS! Maybe.

Nekomew's sister

Nekomew's... Well, sister! She may or may not be actively looking for Nekomew for their mom.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Who knows what actually happened to her after she ran out of the house after Ms. Paloma came to get the children out of their mom's care. Is she Brainwashed and Crazy or simply made to follow her mom's orders out of fear of what would happen if she doesn't cooperate?
  • Big Sister Instinct: It's heavily implied in Nightmares that she tried to spare Nekomew from the abuse they both suffered by their own mom, as shown in the Mum nightmare where she helps Nekomew in many ways. Even when Ms. Paloma came to take both away, she told Nekomew to hide downstairs while she ran out of the house, leaving any solid fate of hers unknown.
  • Black Cloak: She wears one, with the hood always up.
  • Cats Are Mean: She might be this against her will, given what her mom ended up being.
  • Cats Are Magic: Also a possibility. As Nekomew's mom tells her to do a ritual when she leaves during the final bonus level cutscene, presumably to get Nekomew herself.
  • Cain and Abel: The possible Cain to Nekomew's Abel. But she might be this against her will.
  • Driven to Villainy: Heavily implied to be made to do some very bad things by her own mom.
  • Game-Over Man: She's the one who comes for Nekomew if he ruins himself... Or her shadow appears in the hallway in Nightmares wakes up. She is replaced by their mom in the final levels that feature her.
  • The Dragon: To she and Nekomew's biological mom. This might be against her will.
  • Mommy's Little Villain: Heavily implied to be made to do some bad stuff under her mom's orders, including kidnapping children who ruin themselves and maybe doing dark rituals.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Pretty much the same case as The Nurse. But it's more ambiguous with her.
  • Support Party Member: She's the only one who's never a threat outside of a Game Over. She only gets Nekomew if he ruins himself in Potty Trouble, and only her shadow appears in the hallway if Nekomew wakes up in Nightmares.

     The Lizard

The lizard

An lizard who was Nekomew's dad's coworker.

  • Brown Note: Downplayed, A pipe he's on gushes with water, and it makes Nekomew's pee meter rise faster.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Downplayed with him, as he's only seen in the unlockable memories of The Car and Nurse. But otherwise he's a no show in the main game.
  • Lizard Folk: Duh.
  • Support Party Member: He's the only monster that doesn't attack you, but he will fill up your pee meter faster with water sounds. You can easily avoid it by covering your ears.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: All you have to do is cover your ears. That's all you have to do for him.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: For Nekomew's dad. If only he closed the door when he either left or went to go get something, Nekomew wouldn't had walked across the road which resulted in his dad getting hit and killed by a car when he tried to go get him.

The Stranger (UNMARKED SPOILERS FOR POTTY TROUBLE)

The Goat

An mysterious goat who hands Nekomew's mom a strange book, and may or may not be a demon (Or at least somebody who dabbles in black magic). He only appears in cutscenes after you beat the challenge levels in Potty Trouble.

  • Affably Evil: He doesn't seem to be mean about anything regarding the book he gave Nekomew's mom, simply hoping that she can find whatever she's looking for...
  • Ambiguous Situation: Is he really a demonic or at least black magic practicing goat who gave Nekomew's mom a demonic spellbook?
  • Black Cloak: Wears one and always has the hood down.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: He's never seen or mentioned in Nightmares. This would be pretty much justified, since it all takes place in Nekomew's... Well, nightmares. And obviously he never seen or met this guy.
  • Gruesome Goat: This goat hands Nekomew's mom a black magic book after she did her side of a mysterious deal, so she could try to find Nekomew!
  • Jumpscare: He doesn't actually have one of his own, but his ghostly face briefly appears if Nekomew gets grabbed by his own mom.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He might be a demon, and he happens to have red eyes... Or at least he's just into black magic.

     Nekomew's missing friend (SPOILERS! Maybe.)

Nekomew's friend.

A dark grey kitten who suddenly went missing one day, from what Nekomew's new dad saw from his missing poster. Nekomew's biological mom probably had something to do with it.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Who knows what actually happened to him, but it's heavily implied, if not confirmed that he got kidnapped by a familiar face to Nekomew.
  • Brown Bag Mask: It's probably him sporting one of these in Potty Trouble during the quick time events with Nekomew's biological mom.
  • Children as Pawns: May or may not be the case, but in the final level of Potty Trouble along with some of the challenge levels, he'll occasionally appear to try and drag Nekomew to his mom, Nekomew has to fight back.
  • Missing Child: Obviously. It's heavily implied that Nekomew's former mom kidnapped him, with her daughter snatching him after a possible accident.

The Creature (Spoilers for *Squeak Squeak*...?)

The Creature

A... Worm like thing that suddenly appears when Nekomew reaches the bathroom during said level... Don't worry, everything's fine when he gets back in there.

     The Duckling

The Duckling

A cute little duckling that Nekomew seemed to made friends with at the foster care faculity, but was adopted.

  • Happily Adopted: That's what happened to him, he probably has a good life ahead of him.
  • Quacking Up: He simply plays with a ball or had Nekomew do what he does.
  • Token Good Teammate: From the two other characters seen in the Carer part of the "That Place" nightmare, he's the only one who doesn't do anything bad to Nekomew.

     The three wolf pups

Three wolf pups

Just three wolf pups that are implied to either had bullied or played rough with Nekomew while he was at "that place" These three only appear in the "That Place" nightmare.

  • Kids Are Cruel: These three rascals throw balls at Nekomew! And they pointed and giggled at him when he first showed up, if that doesn't imply these kids are jerks.
  • Savage Wolves: Just a trio of implied bullies who happen to be wolf pups.
  • Support Party Member: They never appear on their own, only appearing in "That Place". They also appear more often in the Halloween 2023 nightmare.

Alternative Title(s): Nekomews Potty Trouble
