Cut it, I don't understand what it's supposed to be, unless it's Large Ham or Large-Ham Announcer.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupThe thought of this trope brings to mind Large Ham and Chewing the Scenery so I feel like merging would be a option.
This deaf, dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball.Except there's nothing to merge. Once we remove all of the problem examples there will barely be anything left.
I was not aware of the Large-Ham Announcer trope, so basically one of my proposed solutions (making this trope for voices that sound intentionally dramatic) would be making this a duplicate trope of Large-Ham Announcer.

pee pee poo pooCut and move anything salvageable.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportAlright so here’s what I had in mind.
While thinking about what to do with this trope I realized we don’t have a Dramatic Movie Trailer Voice trope. This feels like a tropable idea, and I feel like I’ve seen it before, although I don’t know how tropable admittedly. Assuming that’s a good concept, we could possibly merge this trope and In a World… into that, although I’d need to wick check the latter first, and I’m going to be busy today so I can’t do it any time soon.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallAre the there any examples of this you could point towards? Because I'm having a hard time picturing it, and 'dramatic vocal tone' is a much vaguer concept than the Stock Phrase of In a World…
Ah, see that’s the thing. I can’t really name any examples off the top of my head. I feel like I’ve seen it, but I can’t really verify.
If no such examples exist we could just cut and move the usage to applicable tropes.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallLike Epic Voice Guy, who does the voiceovers for Honest Trailers?
Edited by Synchronicity on Nov 8th 2022 at 2:34:26 PM
There's also the guy who seemed to do every movie trailer in the 2000's, whatever his name was, and Darwin in early Gumball ads.
Edited by badtothebaritone on Nov 8th 2022 at 2:09:38 PM
We can yard Hammy Trailer or Hammy Narrator.
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup
And yeah, I had stuff like Honest Trailers in mind.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallCut.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I like themayorofsimpleton's idea but the problem is that this trope is so undefined that any attempt to salvage it would basically be turning it into a new trope. Maybe we can launch a TLP for Dramatic Movie Trailer Voice or open a TRS thread for In a World… if a wick check suggests it needs one.
For now though, I think the best course of action is to cut this page and possibly revive it later as Dramatic Movie Trailer Voice. The idea is there but the page as it stands is too far gone.
Edited by supernintendo128 on Nov 11th 2022 at 10:11:01 AM
pee pee poo pooIt can't even decide if it's troping characters or actors. I say cut it.
I hooked a crowner so we can settler whether to cut this.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Seems like it's unanimous.
Let me know when it's okay to cut and remove wicks. I looked through the page and and I think we can salvage a few examples:
- Bill Mitchell's trademark gravel voice was heard on dozens of movie trailers and commercials. He was the voice of the Carlsberg ads ("Probably the best lager in the world") and did very convincing Orson Welles and Humphrey Bogart impressions. And the reason for his deep macho growl? A childhood bout of mumps had affected his vocal chords. We could probably save this for Dramatic Movie Trailer Voice
I think these can be expanded and moved to Large-Ham Announcer:
- Charlie O'Donnell, the longtime Wheel of Fortune announcer. The words "Twenty-five THOOOOOOOOOOOUSAND dollars!" will never sound the same again without him.
- Similarly, Johnny Gilbert's sharp cry of "This... iiiiis...
- "Come on down!", particularly when Johnny Olson said it.Jeopardy!"
In addition to it being too soon to call, I or another mod will announce when it's time to handle the course of action that's decided on.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Ah I see. I never really paid attention to the TRS except for the Vindicated by History thread that ended up going nowhere so I'm still fairly new to this.
In the meantime I'm going to take the gushing examples to clean-up.

pee pee poo pooI think we can call this now.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallYeah. Grab the scissors.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Fully dewicked outside of Trope Report, trope and wick check cutlisted. We can close this as soon as those are cut.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI archived the wick check in the OP, so locking up.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.
Crown Description:
Voice of Dramatic, despite only having 44 wicks, only has two correct examples, and a lot of other examples that don't have problems other than misuse (lack of sufficient context, etc.) overlap with other tropes. What should be done with Voice Of Dramatic?
Issue: It has come to my attention through this thread that we have a trope for dramatic voices, and it's a complete and utter mess. The page itself is horribly written, with no description, tons of ZCEs, poor formatting, it's just everything a trope page shouldn't be. It was created in 2009 before the TLP, so that explains it.
Wick Check Analysis: In doing a wick check, I discovered it was only wicked 43 times, only two could be remotely constituted correct usage given that this trope doesn't give me anything to go off of. I found that the entry will either describe an already existing, more fleshed-out trope, or is used to gush (most notably for Tom Baker), or the entry boils down to "Character's voice is this trope" and leaves it at that. To summarize:
Correct: 2
ZCE: 11
Another trope fits the description: 14
Gushing: 10
Sinkholes: 2
Other/Unsure: 6
Possible Fixes: Given the data above, I don't think this trope can be salvaged. Maybe as a more heroic version of Voice of the Legion or for voices that deliberately try to sound dramatic (the latter seems more likely, I can easily see the former falling prey to the same problems as the trope in its current state).
Wick check:
Correct: 2ZCE: 11
Another trope fits the description: 14
Gushing: 10
Sinkholes: 2
Other/Unsure: 6
- Voice Of Dramatic: She can make an announcement of Poopy Joe being launched into space sound proud and significant.
Gush.People:- Voice Of Dramatic: Definitely. To keep up the tension in the arena, Stuart sometimes removed "The" and numbers from names, so The Morgue's entry would just be his voice stating "Morgue".
Redemption Game: Matsura Ameya- Voice Of Dramatic: Is this in-universe.
Bad Lip Reading:- Voice Of Dramatic: will.i.am in one instance of "Dirty Spaceman."
Dark Matters:- Voice Of Dramatic: The Narrator! ZCE, should just be Large Ham if you're going to sinkhole into it anyway
The Review Team S 2 E 1 Just Imagine:- Voice Of Dramatic / Power Echoes: Reserved for the running gag. ZCE, also aren't "slash" examples discouraged these days?
Jeopardy!:- Voice Of Dramatic: Johnny Gilbert; see Title Scream above. Often tends to be parodied in later seasons. Referring to "THIS! IS! JEOPARDY!." ZCE
Judge Joe Brown:- The Announcer: Ben Patrick Johnson in seasons 1-7, then Rolonda Watts for the remainder of the run.
Panel Quiz Attack 25:- Voice Of Dramatic: Kodama—not just during his signature "Attack Chance!" Catchphrase, but also during the game...especially if a player captures a lot of panels in one turn.
The Price Is Right:- Voice Of Dramatic: All four announcers on the current version, to various extents.
The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer:- Voice Of Dramatic: Patrick Allen.
Trivia.Mac Ski:- Voice Of Dramatic: Paul's manner of speaking changes to a lower, more imposing tone as he takes down the bad guys. Badass Baritone
Bob Lennon:- Voice Of Dramatic: He sometimes does trailers for his own playthroughs, Don LaFontaine style. It should just be under In a World…
Book of Psalms:- Voice Of Dramatic: Psalm 29 describes the powerful voice of the LORD, declaring that it “breaks the cedars of Lebanon” and “shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.” Power Echoes
Deltron 3030:- Casting Gag: "National Movie Review" features Brad Roberts, a Canadian singer known for his baritone voice, narrating an ad for a showing of Strange Brew. Should just be Badass Baritone
OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes S1E16 "Legends Of Mr. Gar":- Voice Of Dramatic: When Crinkly Wrinkly tells the story of Mr. Gar, his voice changes to that of Keith David. Never heard of Keith David, but it describes him as having a "deep, smooth voice" which potholes to Badass Baritone, so this instance can be replaced with that
The Amazing World of Gumball S2E31 "The Voice":- Voice Of Dramatic: Darwin reads a threatening email directed to him and Gumball in a deep voice. Evil Sounds Deep
Wheel of Fortune:TheAmazingWorldOfGumball.Tropes N To Z:
- Voice Of Dramatic:
- Parodied in one of the show's commercials, where Darwin adopts a deep, dramatic voice to narrate the commercial in the style of a movie trailer. In a World…
DLC Quest:- Voice Of Dramatic: The narrator in the trailer does his best. Possibly In a World…
Saints Row: The Third:- Take That!:
- The in-universe series "Nyte Blayde" is a humongous one to numerous vampire shows such as Angel, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries.
- Dramatically voiced radio commercials for the show attempt to interest the viewers in horrendously trite and cliche plot turns and contain snippets full of unashamed Narm, Wangst and Big "NO!". Possibly In a World…
TaskMaker:- Voice Of Dramatic: A deep voice says the game's name in the opening screen. The same clip plays again during any interactions with the TaskMaker. Badass Baritone
WMG.The Princess And The Frog:- A final point of evidence: Keith David's voice is very sexy. Case in point, imagine my dumb-ass theory being read in his voice. Doesn't it sound so much more reasonable now? Badass Baritone
Barock Entertainment:- Voice Of Dramatic: His narration voice, which occasionally overlaps with the Zordon voice he does for Chroma Squad. Possibly In a World…, I wouldn't know for sure because this guy took all of his lets plays down
Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil: Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil is one of Disney Television Animation's line of animated series, focusing on the eponymous character, a seemingly fearless 10-year-old with the looks of a cute mascot coupled with the six-packs-a-day vocals and personality similar to Wolverine, who aspires to become the world's greatest daredevil. Smoky Voice- Doctor Who:
- A male example: The Fourth Doctor has odd looks, but possesses an almost incongruously beautiful deep dramatic voice that was commonly remarked upon at the time. Unwillingness to even temporarily ruin this results in a scene in "The Robots of Death" where his voice is completely unaffected by the fact that he is inhaling copious amounts of helium. He later gives a Hand Wave to Leela that his Bizarre Alien Biology includes "a larynx that can put up with anything".
Ham and Cheese:- Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior is regarded as a so-so First-Person Shooter following the lead of what else was popular at the time. But it featured Tom Baker narrating the intro:
"In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only... war."
Inherently Funny Words:- Doctor Who:
- During the Fourth Doctor era, Robert Holmes would often give the Doctor funny-sounding phrases to say, because Tom Baker had a rich, melodramatic voice that Holmes found amusing. Gushing
The Cast Showoff:- Doctor Who:
- Tom Baker:
- Word of God says the reason Tom Baker was given an elaborate Patrick Stewart Speech in "The Ark in Space" was to show off the then-newly cast Baker's speaking ability - both in terms of his ability to pull off the kind of soliloquies that his predecessor would never have been able to, and in terms of showing off his gorgeous voice, with which the production team was universally infatuated. Some writers (especially Robert Holmes) would even sneak Inherently Funny Words into the Doctor's dialogue in scripts, just for the joy of hearing Baker say them.
Tom Baker:- Voice Of Dramatic: Possesses an unusual deep, commanding voice that depending on context can be powerful and grand, hypnotic and sensual, or the funniest voice in the whole world, all of which are exploited in his work as a voiceover artist.
Boston Legal:- Voice Of Dramatic: James Spader's voice can make the most Anvilicious
Russian Roulette:Author Tractclosing statement incredibly easy on the ears.- Voice Of Dramatic: This is arguably Burton Richardson's most awesome (and low-key) announcing work.
The Fugitive:- Narrator: Voiced by William Conrad, who's ideal for this.
Fire Warrior:- Voice Of Dramatic: Say what you like about the game, but at the very least it gave us a trailer of Tom Baker declaring "It is the 41st Millennium... and there is only WAR"
OneWingedAngel.Western Animation:- Doctor Who:
- Tom Baker will forever be seen as the Fourth Doctor no matter how much he wants not to (and he really, really doesn't want to). After playing the role he spent several decades only able to play crazy Large Hams or spooky, otherworldly geniuses, or as characters who directly inspired the Doctor's character (Sherlock Holmes, Oscar Wilde, etc). He also came under pressure to perform these roles in the style of the Doctor ("in all but whipping out a Sonic Screwdriver"), because this was all people wanted to see him do and there was no point casting him to do anything else. Before he took the part he was considered unusually talented and was winning awards for being an up-and-coming star. After he left the part, he was (in the words of Steven Moffat) "a mad, sad, bad old ham locked away safely in a voiceover booth". Late in his life, with short, wavy white hair and Doctor Who remembered only by TV nostalgia shows and hardcore SF anoraks, he was able to get non-Expy roles in soap operas and sitcoms that allowed him to act in a different style, but interviews suggest he has a certain amount of bitterness over being forced to waste his talent simply because he was very good in one part. He has mellowed a lot in his 70s and 80s (better late than never). After years of refusing to even talk about the show, he appeared in the 50th anniversary episode "The Day of the Doctor" and was prominently featured in the publicity surrounding it, and he continues to play the role of the Fourth Doctor in audio productions.
TaskMaker:Awesome.Citation Needed:
- 6x03: Will Seaward gets a chance to show off his Voice Of Dramatic when, at Gary's prompting, he says "release the cobras!"
Chris: Good lord, I'm involuntarily picking my feet up off the floor!
May Bukas Pa:- Shout-Out: Some viewers were quick to point out the use of the nickname "Bro" in reference to Jesus as a thinly-veiled allusion to Pinoy Big Brother. It helps that Bro's omnipresent voice is also similar or the same as Big Brother's, hence the (inevitable) comparisons. I swear there's another trope for this.
He Really Can Act:- Big Finish Doctor Who:
- Many critics — and even the writers who worked on them — have pointed out that one of the best things about the Tom Baker audio dramas is that, between getting more emotional scenes to do and several decades of personality maturation, he makes a specific point of acting in them, rather than just relying on his own Large Ham natural personality and Voice Of Dramatic to carry everything like he frequently did in the old days. The character comes off more subtle and kind as a result.
Trivia.Doctor Who:- The Cast Showoff:
