Fanfic / Façade (Persona 4)

Go To

They still haven't noticed. Not Dojima, Nanako...not even my own parents. I have already come to accept this from my parents...they can't even remember what gender I am. The male Yasogami High uniform I received was enough to prove that. Until somebody figures it out, I'm Yu Narukami, a male student from the big city attending Yasogami High for the next year.
Description for Façade

Façade is a Gender Flip Persona 4 fanfiction written by author KlonoaDreams (who also writes the Naruto fanfiction Butterfly Child). The plot is very similar to that of the game, with one small twist: Yu Narukami is a girl.

Yu Narukami is the unfortunate daughter of constantly absent, forgetful parents who, on registering her for Yasogami High School, accidentally mark her as a male instead of a female. Sick and tired of their constant mistakes, Yu decides not to correct this mistake and simply lives with it, hoping someone will notice the mistake.

The fanfiction is ongoing and has semi-regular updates.

Note: The Fanfic seems to currently be undergoing a re-write, and unfortunately, due to links not really working on fanfiction.net, the old version cannot be accessed. The author has said that additional chapters won't be added until ALL of the chapters that were released prior are re-written, so it may be a while before it seems to be updated. You may be able to obtain the link if you send the author a private message.

Or if one were to take the time to read the author's profile, one would know that the author's tumblr serves as a mirror for every link posted on their profile, of which includes the pdf to the old version of this story.

Facade contains examples of:

  • Accidental Pervert: During the camping trip Yosuke walks in on Yu while's she naked, not realizing that she was changing clothes. Kanji walks in after Yosuke screams due to walking on Yu.
  • The Alcoholic: Yu slowly develops into one due to stress.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: After accidentally throwing up on Naoki Konoishi, Yu ends up gaining the enmity of many of the underclassmen.
  • Author Appeal: The author certainly enjoys their Bifauxnen and thigh highs.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Despite her short stature, Yu is not lacking in female admirers.
  • Battle Butler: While Yosuke isn't a butler, he certainly dresses like one for Rise's dungeon.
  • Bifauxnen: Yu Narukami is this in spades, with people thinking she is either a very pretty boy or a flat-chested girl. Could quite possibly be the reason why Yu can so easily pass as the male gender, being quite androgynous in appearance.
  • Berserk Button: Yu does NOT appreciate it when her friends are being insulted.
    • Overprotective Personas do NOT like it when their incapacitated users are threatened...or whenever a Shadow even TRIES to get near them.
  • Bilingual Bonus:
    • During the 'Up Close and Personal' plan, Yu has a conversation with a little girl in Spanish.
    • When Kanji stops himself in the middle of calling Yu cute, he lies that he was going to say 'scary'('Kawaii' is 'cute' in Japanese, while 'Kowai' means 'scary'). Yosuke doesn't buy it, but Yu does.
  • Broken Bird: A combination of abandonment issues, a Heroic BSoD upon discovery of her parents' massive error, and sheer fatigue has left Yu more than a bit depressed and less than confident, even to the point of developing a drinking problem at 16. Probably the core reason why she can't work up the self-will to point out she's female.
  • Calling Your Attacks: The Shadow characters seem to do this with their signature moves.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: While each of the party members, with the exception of Kanji, get to different levels of tipsy and/or drunk while in Rise's dungeon, Yosuke is the one who gets drunk the easiest. This comes as a bit of a surprise as Yu was originally thought to be this.
  • Chekhov's Gag: After finding out Yosuke's attraction to nurses when she finds his Porn Stash, Yu constantly teases him over it. Guess what she has to dress up as for Rise's dungeon.
  • The Chikan: After nearly getting molested, Yu has an aversion to taking the train, especially when it's crowded, for this reason.
  • Closet Geek: Rise turns out to be a major fan of Jojos Bizarre Adventure but hid that aspect of herself after she was horribly bullied over it.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Yu is definitely this, with her tendency to headbutt people and/or bite them when cornered.
  • Cool Big Sis: Lilim turns out to be one, surprisingly reliable when the chips are down and comforting Yu when she realizes the extent of her own deception.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Yu didn't think of the consequences of until Morooka threatend expulsion of any students caught sneaking into the tents of the opposite gender. This forces her to realize that she could lose everything she gained: her friends and family could hate her for being a liar and she would be expelled from school.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Yosuke's obsession with nurses ends up biting him in the ass when Yu is required to dress up as one in order to enter Rise's dungeon. Yu is not amused.
  • Dramatic Irony: Dojima jokes about seeing Yu naked as a baby. Since it was such a long time ago he still doesn't realize his nephew is actually his niece.
  • Drinking Game: Rise's dungeon forces the Investigation Team to either strip or drink. Guess what most of the body-conscious team chooses to do?
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Yu's alcholism relapses when her parents call her the wrong name in the first letter she got from them in a long time.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Yukiko wears a Gothic Lolita maid outfit as part of the requirement to enter Rise's dungeon. She would have appreciated the outfit, had she not been forced to wear lacy unmentionables.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Yu isn't lacking in female admirers, most prominent being Rise.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Ever since Yu took up a job at the Shiroku Pub as a dishwasher, she is this, to the point of annoyance as her job requires her to listen to drunk patrons, whom like to hit on her. Regardless of the fact that they still think she is male.
    • And as of chapter 37, Yu has received a gift because of this...in the form of a very feminine, yet expensive hair clip. Dojima is concerned.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When Yosuke finds out that Yu has just turned 16, it horrifies him because the one they made leader and who he KNOWS had a potential drinking problem is younger than he is.
  • Fear of Thunder: One of the things Chie is quite afraid of, right next to bugs.
  • First-Name Basis: From Last-Name Basis, to this, it's usually meant to mark a significant increase in friendship.
  • Foreshadowing: The Velvet Room's design is based on it's guest. It so happens this room is full of alcohol...
  • Fundoshi: Shadow Kanji wears one.
    • Clothing is not allowed in Kanji's dungeon, but towels and fundoshi are acceptable.
  • Gender Bender: Personas have a tendency to change sexes whenever they're fused.
  • Gentle Giant: Take-Mikazuchi seems to reflect this aspect of Kanji.
  • Had to Be Sharp: Yu became a Combat Pragmatist because she was frequently targeted by muggers in the city because she lived alone. Since she had to live on her allowance, it was either learn to fight or starve.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Heterosexual Today?: Oh, Yosuke...
  • Hidden Depths: Mitsuo is probably this in general, as shown through his interactions with Yu and his Pet the Dog moments with the fox.
    • Dojima is revealed to have some knowledge on flowers and their meanings.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Yu, she never had any sort of friends before coming to Inaba and she's becomes really distressed at the possibility of losing them.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Yu does this early on whenever the stress of situations and the responsibility of being the leader become too much for her. This is not Played for Laughs in the least.
  • Important Haircut: Chie cuts off her long hair in front of her middle school classmates to make a point to Yukiko's bullies that she will be on Yukiko's side.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite the fact that Yu is female, the plot chugs on as usual as far as events go. Thus far at least, Yu's budding friendship with Mitsuo might change things…
  • Internal Reveal: Kanji and Yosuke find out Yu's a girl when they walk in on her changing out her swim clothes during the camping trip.
  • In Vino Veritas: Calm and collected Yu becomes playful and clingy when she has too much alcohol.
    • Yu casually reveals to Yukiko and Chie her gender when she gets extremely drunk in a drinking game for Rise's dungeon.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Kanji looks like one, but isn't.
    • Yu had a rather violent encounter with a biker gang and their banchou...of whom Kanji saved her from.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Kanji and Yosuke hid from Yu that she was being targeted by the underclassman because they don't want to add to her stress on top of her being leader. She didn't realize that she was being bullied at first because she was too stressed and busy to notice. They would protect her shoes, check her locker and desk for razors and get people to back off. Yu only finds out at the school camping trip when Naoki Konishi tries to warn her about upon overhearing that it was going to get worse.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Devil Arcana Persona, Lilim, went from potential Senri clone, to this, constantly teasing Yu for being a virgin, making sexual innuendos but never does it in a mean spirited way.
    • Incubus, however, is NOT this.
  • Mind Screw: When Oberon upgrades into Titania, it gets pointed out that she was her own husband.
  • My Greatest Failure: Yosuke has issues coping with the outcome of the violent biker gang incident Yu was involved in, to the point where he has become rather protective of her.
    • Yu considers her drinking problem this. She gets better... and then relapses.
  • Naughty Nurse Outfit: Yu ends up being forced to wear one as the requirement for entering Rise's dungeon.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: In chapter 22, Yu's encounter with a biker gang and their banchou turned into this when she refused to be a cooperative example. The only reason why Yu's injuries weren't as severe as they could have been was because of the work of her Personas and because Kanji had saved her.
  • Noodle Incident: Averted, in the case of incident where Kanji singlehandedly beats down a biker gang...with a cast-iron pan.
    • Played straight in the case of Yu getting lost and ending up on the hill overlooking town while taking her scooter out for a ride...around the neighborhood.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Yosuke tends to be this towards Yu, but Sayoko is the reason why Yu now says, "Personal space" whenever anyone invades her personal bubble.
  • Off the Wagon: Yu's alcoholism relapses after her parents makes contact with her in a long time by mailing her a package and address her by the wrong name.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: The food court incident at Junes is something that Yosuke will never live down, ESPECIALLY after Yu upgraded her golf club for an actual katana. Sharper than a golf club, indeed.
  • One of the Boys: Yu seems to have been this at her last high school and is definitely one at her current high school.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Father of the Year, Hansuke Hanamura, is definitely this and his impeccable timing shows it quite well.
    • Dojima is also one as well, due to the way he reacted to seeing his nephew in a dress. Keep in mind, Dojima is not yet aware that his nephew is actually his niece, but the fact still stands.
  • O.C. Stand-in: While mentioned, Yosuke's father wasn't a character in the game, but is a major supporting character in the story.
  • Papa Wolf: Dojima has shades of this towards Yu. Especially after the biker gang incident. He also gets very disturbed when a customer at the bar Yu works at gives her a very expensive hairpin.
  • Parental Abandonment: To say Yu's parents are negligent is an understatement. The fact that Yu gets emotional over the little things that happen between her and Dojima says a lot.
  • Petite Pride: Yu doesn't seem to mind at all that she's so flat-chested that she can go topless and still pass as a guy.
  • Phrase Catcher: Everyone comments on how short/slender Yu.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: At 5'3" and 105 lbs, Yu Narukami is this, with her ferocious headbutts and biting.
  • Porn Stash: As Yu found Yosuke's stash while drunk, Yosuke tries to do the same to Yu...only to find a volume of shoujo manga instead. Yosuke and Yu then end up bonding over porn right after. Then Yosuke ends up recalling this sometime after he finds out Yu is a girl. Hilarity Ensues as Yu is STILL completely neutral about it.
  • Recursive Crossdressing: Happens in chapter 37, in which Yukiko convinces Yu to try on a summer dress before buying it for her. It gives us this little gem:
Hansuke: Wouldn't you say he makes a spectacular crossdresser?
  • Running Gag: Critical hit to the nads is definitely becoming this.
Yu: Critical hit to the nads?
Yosuke: Critical hit to the nads – is this going to be a reoccurring thing for us?
  • Safe Word: Referenced when Yosuke and Yu are fighting Shadow Chie.
    Yosuke: What's the safe word?
Shadow Chie: Safe word? There is no safe word! Now kneel before me!
  • School Bullying Is Harmless: Averted. Yukiko was a victim of this while she was in middle school and both she and Chie were affected rather badly from the experience, due to the outcome, to the point that it became one of the reasons Chie's relationship with Yukiko became unhealthily domineering.
    • Yu's bullies attempt her serious harm by putting razors in her things and one of them tried to push her down a flight of stairs.
      • Yu has had a textbook thrown at her face and nearly got cornered in the restroom, had it not been for Yosuke.
    • It's also the root of Rise's issues. She was bullied due to being a major fan of Jojos Bizarre Adventure, along with also being an early bloomer and didn't have any friends as a result.
  • Secret-Keeper: Nanako becomes the first person that Yu entrusts the secret of her gender to. This later goes on to extend to Kanji and Yosuke during the camping trip and then Yukiko and Chie during Rise's dungeon.
  • Self-Harm: Chie was revealed to be a cutter and it is the reason why she keeps her wrists covered. According to Yukiko, Chie has refrained from cutting herself since the revelation.
  • Serious Business: Meat is this to Yu, as well as anything involving sales on food.
  • Share the Male Pain: Happens to Yu when Yosuke receives a Groin Attack from Chie.
Yu: I'm not even a guy and I felt that... is that normal?
  • Ship Tease: Quite a lot of it.
    • To begin with, since their first encounter, Kanji has had a lot of it with Yu.
    • It's quite difficult to ignore the moments between Yosuke and Yu, especially now that Yu has explicitly told Yosuke she feels safe around him. Not to mention, the day before she even told him, the two had an Accidental Kiss.
      • Their switch to a First-Name Basis had them awkwardly talking to each other about it.
    • The Yukiko/Chie is strong in this fic.
    • Since her introduction, Rise's been getting some with Yu as well. Of course, Rise has no idea Yu is female.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Yu's Personas do not speak to her during the Camping Episode, where she gets outed as a girl.
  • Shower Shy: Yu's classmates thought she was uncomfortable with showering or dressing in front of others, when in actuality, she was doing it to hide the fact that she's female.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Stock Shoujo Bullying Tactics: Yukiko, Rise and Yu have all of been victims of this:
    • Yukiko was tricked into giving her phone number to someone she thought was her friend, so the whole class send texts calling her Sadako or "Seven Days." She was also shunned and mocked by many of her middle school classmates after her Traumatic Haircut.
      • Prior to this, Yukiko was already getting bullied by a group of girls, one of whom was the girl who had obtained her number under the false pretense of being a friend and distributed it to others.
    • Rise was shunned by her classmates and picked on for being a massive fan of Jojos Bizarre Adventure, though that might have just been an excuse as, alongside that, she was also an early bloomer.
    • Yu's bullies have attempted to steal her shoes and have been placing mean notes in her shoe locker. Unfortunately for them, Yosuke and Kanji intercept them before they could succeed. Then they tried to push Yu down a flight of stairs.
      • The bullying has since turned physical. Razors are now being placed in Yu's belongings and shoe locker. And, in one case, Yu had a textbook thrown in her face.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Between Yu and her father, Souji.
    • Hansuke Hanamura looks like a older Yosuke with a different haircut and darker hair.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: When she finds out about her parent's error in her school enrollment, Yu started to dress and present herself as a guy, hoping someone would notice that she is female. Of course, as time passed, with no one actually noticing and Yu not saying anything, it eventually turned into a disguise when consequences arose.
  • Sweet on Polly Oliver: Both Yosuke and Kanji find themselves attracted to Yu before they learn she's a girl.
  • Synchronization: Just like in Persona 4: The Animation, when a Persona is hurt, so is the wielder and vice versa.
  • Team Dad: Izanagi is this to all the Personas, keeping every one of Yu's Personas in line and such.
  • Team Mom: Yu, very much so...and of course, Justice Arcana Persona, Archangel (formerly Angel) is this as well.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Yu lives and acts masculinely but is a very good cook and has an interest in cute things and clothing.
    • As of recently, Yu has been questioning if she could also be just as pretty as someone, such as Rise. It's not that she's insecure, she's just curious as she has never done anything to her appearance.
  • Traumatic Haircut: In middle school, Yukiko cut off her long hair after getting bullied by her classmates for her resemblance to Sadako.
  • You Are Not Alone: Yu proves this to Mitsuo when she stands up for him after Morooka makes him cry.
  • Younger Than They Look: Setanta, a Persona of the Emperor Arcana, is this. Physically being a teenager, but chronologically being only seven years old due to his mythology.
    • Yu also qualifies, much to everyone's surprise (and horror), having JUST turned sixteen at the start of the story.
