Crossovers
  • Attempted but ultimately averted in Chapter 70 of BlazBlue Alternative: Remnant. When Terumi confronts Ruby and reveals himself to her, he's confused as to why she isn't more hurt by his betrayal since he helped her in the past regarding the White Fang investigation, showing that he wanted to invoke this reaction from her. As Ruby points out, they barely interacted at all and he had several red flags present when they first met, so not only does his "betrayal" lack impact, it also isn't as unexpected to her as he believes.
  • Child of the Storm has this as Hermione's reaction once she finds out her true parentage and that Harry both knew (having worked it out a few months before) and had kept silent at her biological mother's request, if reluctantly since Wanda is his godmother, and furiously defended her once Hermione started laying into her despite Wanda's own protests. She's hurt and enraged, and perceives this as him taking sides against her. While her judgement is partly based on resentment and view that she's The Un-Favourite by comparison, it's heavily implied that Harry picked family over friends.
  • The Night Unfurls:
    • After the assault of the Black Fortress is deemed a success, Vault and the Black Dogs, who are considered the finest and most trustworthy mercenary group in Eostia, decide to betray the Seven Shields and declare war on Eostia, knowing that the vast resources and armies are enough for them to claim power for themselves.
    • The dark elves of Loraine, Grace included, share this sentiment when Olga, their queen who has fought for them, sacrificed the city to the war bands of the orcs, leaving them to be subjected to Rape, Pillage, and Burn.
  • Raise Your Voice Against Liars: After Lila's true nature is revealed, Marinette is forced to examine just how badly her "friends" let her down, ranking them all on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being unforgivable. Nino and Alix, who are both trying to atone, rank 2 and 3; Kim, Rose, and Max all rank 6; and Alya and Adrien rank the highest at 8. Over time, everyone aside from Alya manages to lower their rankings, mostly because Alya refuses to admit any fault and acts offended at the very suggestion that she needs to do anything to regain Marinette's trust.
  • The Saga Of Tanya The Firebender: Tanya, having grown dissatisfied with her superior Admiral Zhao has him killed; pinning Avatar Aang as his murderer and taking command of the Fire Nation Fleet Zhao had assembled to conquer the Northern Water Tribe herself. After learning the truth, Princess Azula tried to use it as leverage to make Tanya bend the knee to her; only for the newly-promoted Admiral Tanya to publicly announce that she'll rename the conquered Northern Water Tribe Capital after Zhao, invariably pissing Azula off even more with Tanyas' meteoric rise to power.
  • Shadows over Meridian: After learning that Vera deceived her fellow Sky Hunters for her own selfish ends, Amelia is utterly dismayed, because for all her differences with Vera, she never believed the latter would be capable of stabbing her friends in the back like this (with the others feeling similarly when they later learn about it}. Her feelings are empathized by Vathek, who's still reeling over the revelation that it was Caleb of all people who played a vital role in making Kage an enemy by countermanding Elyon's orders and refused to come clean about it.
  • Spider-Ninja: Doctor Curt Connors is one of the few SHIELD agents the Hamatos fully trust. However, his desperation to get his arm back leads him to steal a blood sample from Raphael when he's injured and unconscious, using the mutagen in the turtle's blood to create a formula to help him regrow his arm (which is also what turns him into the Lizard). The Hamato siblings have this reaction when they learn (seeing as how he, Fury, and Coulson were the first humans other than April that they trusted), and it takes Raph a long time to forgive the doctor.
    • Played for Laughs in a later chapter, when Pet webs Mikey to the ceiling when he wouldn't stop bragging about being the best video game-player in the family (specifically citing a time when he beat her in Mortal Kombat and bragged about it for a week).
    Mikey: Et tu, Pet?

Ace Attorney

  • A Complete Turnabout: Phoenix's first day in the alternate universe leaves him with the distinct impression that his counterpart was an utter Jerkass, Hated by All of the people that are his friends back home. However, he later learns that they used to be on much better terms and that their anger and coldness towards him is due to how he'd recently betrayed their trust.

Case Closed

  • Dominoes:
    • When Shinichi learns several of his friends are secretly members of the Irregulars, he's hit the hardest by Ran's betrayal. The two of them were dating, yet she kept him Locked Out of the Loop and increasingly treated him like he were nothing more than a fragile possession she needed to protect, all while expecting him to become a Love Martyr and be the perfect, unquestioning boyfriend she pictured in her head.
    • During the Black Hole Crisis, Shinichi finds himself being betrayed by Kaito when the thief steals the Meta-Nullifier he needs to save Santa's life. While they subsequently save Shinichi from the airstrike ISHA launches, they still leave Santa to die.

ChalkZone

  • In Catch a Brief Reflection, Light Penny and Snap both call out Light Rudy for how cruelly and callously he treated them despite supposedly seeing them as friends, to the point that he left Snap crippled. Following his Heel–Face Turn, he's genuinely remorseful about his actions.

Danganronpa

  • In Fractured Fates, Shiro is crushed when it's revealed that his closest friend in the killing game, Itachi, not only murdered one of their classmates but also tricked him into assisting with the crime.
  • Graduate Meeting of Mutual Killing: In the Chapter 3 trial, Reiji Ohmoto is accused of the murder. His brother Yukio defended him to the very end and doesn't take it well when it's confirmed and revealed that Reiji really was the mastermind behind the murder and purposely used Yukio as a pawn to get himself free.
  • Killing Game Deluxe:
    • Mahiru is horrified when she realizes that Mikan was the one who killed Hiyoko in their first killing game.
    • Makoto and Kaede are not happy when they realize Sayaka was Hiyoko's killer.

Fire Emblem

  • The Savior King, the Master Tactician and the Queen of Liberation:
    • Byleth, Claude, Rhea, Dorothea, and Dimitri are all hit extremely hard by the revelation of the Flame Emperor's Secret Identity.
    • After Fort Merceus falls, the Imperial soldiers who surrendered are left utterly horrified by Edelgard dropping the javelins of light upon Merceus, realizing that they would have slaughtered them all just to keep the area out of the hands of the Kingdom/Alliance. A later interlude shows that the Adrestian civilians aren't taking this revelation any better.
    • Hubert feels this way towards Bernadetta, as she chose to side with the Church over her homeland.
    • After Petra switches sides, Edelgard is left wondering whether Casper or Ferdinard will turn upon them next.

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends

  • In One Step Ahead, the pain of Bloo humiliating Mac on his birthday is only amplified by how many of his friends at Foster's participated in the prank, leaving him feeling like he was betrayed by practically everyone he knew.

Godzilla

Henry Stickmin Series

  • The plotline of Begrudging Assistance Requests is kicked off when Henry betrays Ellie so that he can escape the Complex without her. Ellie then turns to Warden Dimitri and offers an alliance, offering to help him track down and kill Henry in exchange for her freedom.

Invader Zim

Jackie Chan Adventures

  • The Ultimate Evil:
    • Jade is furious with Valerie when she learns the latter knew that she was Hsi Wu's Other and wilfully kept the truth from her among a couple other secrets. She quickly comes to regret being so harsh once Valerie ends up in serious trouble.
    • This works two ways when Shendu's spirit returns and possesses Valerie: he's incorrectly assumed that Valerie betrayed him to be banished and face his siblings' wrath in the Netherworld, so he doesn't hesitate to threaten bloody retribution on her loved ones if she doesn't do as he says. Valerie in turn is hurt and shaken by what Shendu is putting her through and declares the Chan Clan are right about him being nothing more than a monster.

KanColle

  • In Ambience: A Fleet Symphony, Suzukaze is shocked when, while defending her ship sister Murasame from an aggressor, Murasame, instead of being grateful, says she is ashamed of Suzukaze's actions. Suzukaze is so distraught that she flees from the fleet.

Love Hina

  • Played With in For His Own Sake:
    • Naru takes this attitude towards anyone she perceives as having betrayed her, lashing out viciously at all and sundry. Unfortunately, Naru is extremely self-absorbed, and her definition of 'betrayal' basically translates to 'isn't doing everything I want and completely supporting my point of view'.
    • Played Straight in the denouncement: when Granny Hina makes clear that bailing Naru out of jail is the last thing she intends to do for her, Naru immediately rips into and berates her. This hits Granny Hina hard, as she realizes that everything she did for Naru was completely unappreciated, and she invested so much trying to help someone who was All Take and No Give.

Mega Man

Miraculous Ladybug

  • Played With in Chloé's Lament.
  • Couturiere: Marinette is akumatized into the titular akuma after the stress of having Lila convince everyone that she's been bullying her boils over. It's shown that she was stuck particularly hard by how Alya refused to even consider anything Marinette was telling her, as well as Adrien, the only other one who knew about Lila's true nature, staying silent and not offering so much as a single word in her defense.
  • In Here, Alya finds herself charged with defamation due to posting footage of her gossiping and casually insulting people with Lila on the Ladyblog. Lila is her only Character Witness; however, Lila immediately throws her under the bus, claiming that Alya FORCED her to say all those horrible things. She even offers false evidence of the 'scripts' she supposedly followed.
  • The Karma of Lies: When Lila skips town, she leaves all of the classmates who trusted her much poorer for the experience... especially Adrien, whom she stole a lot of money from. Nino and the rest of the class do their best to support Adrien during this trying time, only to learn that he'd known about her true nature for much longer than the rest of them, but had refused to do anything, only speaking out against her crimes after he was personally victimized.
  • LadyBugOut:
    • Marinette decides that Ladybug needs to start her own blog when Alya ignores the heroine's wishes and posts a picture of Ladybug and Chat Noir Kissing Under the Influence of Oblivio's Laser-Guided Amnesia on the Ladyblog while deliberately omitting the context. Alya goes on to claim that being a superhero makes Ladybug a 'public figure', and that this means she has no right to privacy or to defend herself against misrepresentation, gossip, or speculation.
    • Alya in turn sees Ladybug's decision to start a 'rival blog' this way, since Ladybug telling the truth about what happened tanks the Ladyblog's reputation. She also considers Marinette to have betrayed her, due to her involvement with setting the blog up.
    • Nino gets hit hard by this when he learns that Adrien was aware of Lila's true nature but stayed silent and let her keep stringing everyone along, along with leaving Marinette in the lurch.
    • While Chat Noir aids Alya by offering her exclusive interviews and content for the Ladyblog, after he fails to notice that Ladybug's yo-yo has started recording and broadcasting live, resulting in the public getting to see how he treats his 'partner' in private, Alya immediately cuts ties with him so that the backlash won't drag her any further down.
  • Missing: Nino gets blindsided by this when Adrien confesses to him that he'd known that Lila was a Manipulative Bitch, but not only chose not to do anything about her lying but advised Marinette not to do anything either. Despite his anger and frustration with Adrien, however, he still tries to convince him that it's not completely his fault that Marinette has disappeared.
  • Nymph and the Corrupted Miraculous: Lady Nymph, Belle Aube, and Nino are all hit hard by this when they learn that Adrien is Catastrophe.
  • In The One to Make It Stay's Wham Episode, Marinette is thrown for a loop by the revelation that Chat Noir and Adrien are one and the same, as it hits her that he betrayed her in both of his identities. Everything Chat Noir did to hurt her was also done by Adrien, and vice versa. She cared about both, despite their less-than-stellar moments, but adding it all up proves overwhelming... especially when combined with how he lost the ring to Hawkmoth due to his self-centered behavior. Driven home by a sequence where she reviews their actions, attributing all of the things done by one identity to the other.
Chat told her to just let Lila continue lying. Adrien got pushy about his feelings toward her. Chat enabled Chloé and made her feel bad for wanting her bully to be gone. Adrien attempted to kiss her several times without her consent.
    Neither identity trusted her.
How did he fall so far from the partner that gave her hope on their second mission? He claimed to love her, but she would have traded every bit of that love for real trust in her decisions.
  • Scarlet Lady: After Chloé impulsively reveals herself as Scarlet Lady, she's left reeling from the consequences. As it starts to sink in just how much she's Hated by All, her half-sister Zoé attempts to comfort her... and suggests that she should seriously consider retiring from the superhero life and giving her Miraculous to Marigold and Chat Noir. Chloé immediately throws her out of her room, then collapses and cries into her knees at the prospect of the one person she saw as still being on her side making such a suggestion.
  • Truth and Consequences: All of the Miraculous heroes are horrified when they learn that Ladybug made a deal with Hawkmoth. This hits them all much harder upon learning that she's Marinette, their "everyday Ladybug".
  • What Goes Around Comes Around: After Adrien accidentally reveals that he'd known that Lila was a Con Artist and deliberately kept the rest of the class in the dark about it, Nino thinks about all the times he'd previously stood up for Adrien, like when he fought to get him a proper birthday party. The notion that Adrien saw no reason to fight to protect him from being exploited by somebody like Lila in return hits him hard.

My Hero Academia

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • In Aftermath of a Fallen Star, Evening Glory is horrified to learn that Gallant Heart was one of the conspirators who helped assassinate Twilight.
Evening Glory: I can't believe it, Gallant Heart... the Gallant Heart. He's always been loyal, his family has been in the royal guard since it was founded. Shining Armor picked him as one of his best stallions at his wedding! His brother is even in the academy! How could... this is...
  • Bitter Tears: An Anon-A-Miss Fic:
    • The Humane Five feel this way when they think that Sunset has reverted to her old ways and betrayed their trust by posting their secrets online as Anon-A-Miss. Sunset herself is hit hard by how easily her friends come to that conclusion and turn their backs on her.
    • The Humane Five are then hit with a straighter example after learning that the CMC were behind Anon-A-Miss all along.
  • Echoing Silence: On the day of the Royal Wedding, Twilight Sparkle has to deal with all of her friends refusing to heed her warnings about the fake Candace, with Princess Celestia outright banishing her from Equestria and sending her to the Deadlands. It takes years before Celestia sends anyone to look for her, and the Princess doesn't explain to anyone just what is going on, which just makes matters significantly worse for all involved.
  • Faith and Doubt: Twilight feels this way when all of her friends walk out on her after she accuses Cadence of being evil. Later, Twilight's parents call out Princess Celestia and the rest of the Mane Six on how they betrayed her.
  • Getting Back on Your Hooves: Trixie reacts this way when she realizes that Helping Hoof is assisting Checker Monarch in her efforts to ruin Trixie.
  • The Great Alicorn Hunt: Twilight Sparkle gets a moment of this in chapter 28 when her loyal friend Spike (who has been incinerating much of the admittedly pointless paperwork between her and her captain) asks Twilight to give poor Flash Sentry a break.
  • In A Mad Glimmer, Starlight Glimmer is convinced that all of the ponies who used to live in her equalist village rose up and collectively stabbed her in the back when they turned upon her and reclaimed their cutie marks.
  • The Nuptialverse:
    • In Post Nuptials, Twilight initially tells the others that she doesn't feel like they betrayed her trust, as she's bottling up her true feelings on the matter. Eventually, they overflow and she calls them out.
    • Metamorphosis has Chrysalis anticipating this reaction ahead of time, as she makes a Deal with the Devil with Discord while planning to betray him as well.
  • The Perilous Romance Of Swans: Played for Laughs when Cadance has Celestia sedated. The heavily medicated princess complains that "Cadance had her co-conspirators stab me in my bum-bum."
  • Twilight Then, Twilight Now Universe:
    • Spitfire and Soarin' are left feeling this way when Lightning Dust leads her own squad of Lightning Bolts to sabotage the Wonderbolts, as part of Dream Valley's plans to worsen Equestria's international reputation.
    • Applejack feels this way when Chocolate sells her to the Jewel Wizard at the start of the Grogar Wars.

Naruto

  • A Case Study in the Sturdiness of the Rookie 9: Due to different teams being assigned, Ino-Shika-Chou is broken up, with each member winding up in a different group. During the Chuunin Exams, Chouji decides to take advantage of Ino's trust so that his team can steal her team's scroll in the Forest of Death. This has massive ramifications, with Ino being utterly furious and heartsick over being backstabbed by somebody she grew up alongside, and Shikamaru later admits that he wouldn't want to work with Chouji or his team during a mission.
  • Downplayed in Androgyninja's A Dose of Venom: Sakura isn't exactly thrilled that Genma recommended that she be promoted to chuunin rank without consulting her first, complaining that many shinobi see civilian-born ninja like her as nothing more than Cannon Fodder, and her promotion means she's now going to be thrown against much bigger threats. Genma explains that while this is true, remaining a genin would've left her even more vulnerable to sabotage. Sakura isn't happy about this, but accepts his explanation.
  • In Hakumei, Kisame betrayed Zabuza's trust, exposing his plan to assassinate the Mizukage and breaking up the Seven Swordsmen of Mist. Zabuza never forgave him for this.

Odd Squad

  • Ships Ahoy!:
    • Over the course of Part Two, Olive is forced to watch as Oscar slips further and further from her as her partner, prioritizing spending time in the Lab and solving gadgets over being out in the field and helping her realize her true potential as an agent. It all comes crashing down when Polly Graph, Oscar's cousin, tells her the truth about Oscar and how he was set on the path to becoming a Lab Director and going into the Science department completely of his own will — she returns to Headquarters in a fluster only to find herself smack-dab in the middle of Oscar's promotion and subsequently breaks down completely. Likewise, Todd, Olive's co-worker, also turns to the side of evil...and it's purely because Olive rejected his advances, which is something that she is also forced to come to terms with.
    • Olive's Last Partner, being a prequel story to Ships Ahoy!, likewise has Olive get hit with betrayal, with her spilling out all of her emotions regarding Oscar's decisions to him and how much it hurt her. It leads him to have a serious My God, What Have I Done? moment as he tries to justify his actions before apologizing.

Persona

  • Hours 'Verse:
    • Akechi eats a reversed Confidant with Sojiro when the latter finds out the truth about his past, particularly that he was the one who killed Wakaba.
    • Downplayed when Maruki admits that he knew all along Akira was a Phantom Thief. Akira's trust in him is damaged by the fact that he not only kept that from him but exploited the knowledge for his own benefit, but it isn't enough to destroy their friendship.

Pokémon

  • AAML: Diamond and Pearl Version: Haunter is extremely upset by Rotom betraying the heroes. Things get better when Rotom reveals they only "joined" Team Galactic in order to figure out why their Childhood Friend Charon joined the evil organization.

RWBY

  • Null: Jaune is betrayed and abandoned by Blake when she leaves Adam. Note that ditching your psychologically abusive psycho boyfriend who can easily take care of himself in the wilderness is one thing, but abandoning a dependent, traumatized boy who can barely fend for himself, and who trusted you to keep him safe from the Government Conspiracy that has every authority on Remnant hunting him so he can be dragged back to a fate worse than death; and doing this in the middle of a populated city while going out of your way to steal his scroll, is another thing entirely. Understandably, Jaune can barely hear of or even think of Blake without getting angry afterwards.

Sailor Moon

  • Beautiful Destroyer Sailor Moon: Makoto's career as the crime-fighting Mifune came to an abrupt end when her friend Yukio betrayed her to Balalaika. This led to Makoto being Blackmailed to stop, along with getting kicked out of her expensive school, landing six months in juvie, probation until she's twenty, and being saddled with a perverted probation officer. Makoto bitterly thinks that about the only upside is that being expelled means she'll never have to see Yukio again.

Star Wars

  • Blood and Honor: Despite all evidence to the contrary, Lord Sanguis firmly believes that Darth Baras would never betray her. When he does, it hurts her deeply. Quinn's own, smaller betrayal, as well as his attempt to leave her on Taris, are very unpleasant surprises as well.

Steven Universe

  • In Little Rebellions, Blue Diamond feels this way about her pearl betraying her, claiming that she was a "good master". Her pearl calls her out on this:
Blue Pearl: Kindly? You did not shatter me, I suppose. Or Harvest me, or hurt me. No, you just had me stand there. Hold things, open doors for you, sing for you, dance for you. Had me suffer through every single one of your ridiculous emotional breakdowns.

Young Justice

  • In The Virtue of Revenge, the team is shocked to learn that Arsenal has become a member of the Outlaws. He defends himself by proclaiming that he was never their friend in the first place.
