I'm here from suspension thread. Aside from help with getting this thing clean, I would also like to ask anyone to post those tropes when they are ready. Given the dates in the thread, it doesn't look encouraging, but guess I have no other choice.

The Postman

  • Apathetic Citizens:
    • One of the main reason why civilisation collapsed was common attitude of "this is not my problem" toward all the mounting issues. Humanity was able to survive the Doomwar, but wasn't able to hold against all the hardships and predatory survivalists, ignoring neighbours calling for help.
    • Gordon quite vocally chews out people from the southern parts of Willamette Valley for their lack of initiative or any desire to help people in need.
  • Appeal to Force: Holnists feel free to impose their tyranny, as they are the strongest and there is no one left to stop them from doing so. At least not in Oregon.
  • Army of Thieves and Whores: Holnists, with emphasis on thieves.
  • Battle in the Rain: Many, if not all of them, but the most notable is the final confrontation between George Powhatan and General Macklin, where the rain is there for purely dramatic reasons.
  • Beard of Barbarism: All Holnist's slaves have long, twisted and unkempt beards.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Dena when dying.
  • Bond One-Liner: "Never talk while you fight. It's a bad habit". Especially fitting, as Gordon is basically at the mercy of an armed and much stronger person.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late:
    • When Corvallis was attacked by Anti-Tech Mob, the remnants of local military arrived when the damage was already made and Cyclops was dying.
    • Gordon finally abandoned his post assigned for his militia unit when no reinforcements nor relief came for over a year. By that time he was last man standing.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • The wistle Gordon recieved from Abby in first section became very handy in third one, when he used it to signal his men about Holnist's ambush.
    • Letter from Dena became useful when it was accidently read by one of the Holnist's slaves, inspiring her to help Gordon and Johnny escape.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Gordon, against his strong common sense and all the bad things around, keep on resigning himself and going for a rescue or providing help to the needing, even if he would prefer to remain coward he feels to be. Instead of freezing solid he muster his body to do something heroic... or his body overcomes his cowardice and acts on instincs.
  • Con Man: Agains his own will, Gordon ends up in grand scheme as a mastermind behind it. It seems almost af if he's made a postman by fate and can't do anything about it.
  • Dead Guy on Display: Holnists "mark" their territory with crucified people. They also use it as punishment for misbehaving slaves and a warning for others to stay in line.
  • Death Glare: Gordon gave one to the Mayor of Oakridge when he started to contest his authority over the town.
  • Death Is Dramatic: No, it's not. Just die, drop dead and don't interfere with the events. And God forbids saying anything. When people die, they do so suddenly and without any warning.
    • On the other hand, played straight when Dena dies
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Gordon, ever since the world collapsed.
  • Disney Villain Death: After climactic and lenghtly duel, George Powhatan grabs in half General Macklin and throws him down a gorge.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After long time of mistreatment, the woman under Holnist slavery poisoned few guards and helped Gordon and Johnny escape. She even managed to arrange retrival of Gordon's diary without realising how important it was.
  • The Dreaded: Inverted with Holnists - they are generally feared, but hated even more. Whenever there is an occassion for that, people gang on small packs of them.
  • Elite Mooks: The other two augments under Macklin command.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The Mayor of Oakridge remains nameless even after he's deposed from the post. And he wasn't elected for it either.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Charles Bezoar tries for a while pass as a decent person, but the illusion shatters in no time, with just few tiny pushes made by Gordon.
  • Feudal Future: Countless communities were either reduced into clan-like organisations or outright serfdom under some strongman. Then there is the land under Holnist rule, which is divided into territories outright called baronies - hell-holes with brutal slavery and servitude.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Augment program gave the exact effects it was suppose to give by outfitting agressive and unstable soldiers with cybernetic enhancements to additionally strengthen them. It was almost instantly cancelled and at least part of involved soldiers were Brought Down to Normal before the Doomwar.
  • Good Is Not Soft: People from Willamette Valley are decent and good folks, but will kill you without as much as a blink of an eye if forced to do so.
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy:
    • ...and lazy, as invoked by Gordon when he's easily approaching Oakridge and bypassing its guards until he reaches the main gate without much effort.
    • Subverted later on, when he is captured for the second time by the Holnists. He managed to climb on a beam his hands were tied to, but first thing Colonel Bezoar did was looking in that direction the moment he realise Gordon is missing.
  • Honor Among Thieves:
    • As one of general rules, Holnists do not take retribution for slained comrades - by their philosophy if you managed to kill one of them, you are a Worthy Opponent.
    • People tend to share their loot if found together... sometimes. Otherwise they might as well kill you for it.
  • The Horde: Both Holnists and Anti-Tech Mob. At least the latter are a thing from the past.
  • I Want My Jet Pack: In book's timeline, humanity managed to build computers capable of reaching level of true AI, introduced two generations of cyborgs and was able to introduce military-grade laser weapons. All by mid 90's.
  • Instant A.I.: Just Add Water!: Averted, the pre-war computers were a step between real AI and standard mega-computer. Only if running sufficiently long, they could reach true sentience. Which makes Cyclops death even more shattering.
  • Inverse Law of Utility and Lethality: Gordon is anything but a fighter... which helps him all the time.
  • Irony: Gordon managed to impress inhabitants of Pine View, which gave him hope to stay there for a while or even settle with them - something he really wanted to do. They decided that they can't stop a mail-carrier just like that and so his grand plan was destroyed. The whole situations keeps on repeating itself each time he reaches new place suitable for settling down in his postal attire - the only one he owns.
  • Just Following Orders: Inverted. Gordon is devastated, because he didn't issue order for his men to follow - they choose by themselves to conduct many barbaric acts to later blame Holnists for them.
  • Keystone Army: Given how Holnists' ranks work, killing all their high command in final chapter inavetably led to their demise as organised force. Without that unity they not only become easier targets, but it's also implied they would start fighting each other for the command.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Both Gordon and George Powhatan, who are so sour that it gives them wrinkles. The overarching motive in the story is their realisation that the lofty ideas of pre-war world are all that's left worth living and standing for.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Roger Septien, the robber from very first pages of the book, is eventually killed by Johnny when he and Gordon were escaping Holnists HQ, as he was unlucky enough to stand on guard in vital spot.
  • Life Will Kill You: It's never clearly stated, but sizable chunk of militia unit Gordon was serving in died out of malnutrition and dental infection caused by low higiene. In fact, the death toll from those was bigger than from attacks they repelled.
  • Made a Slave: Anyone captured alive by Holnists. This also includes Sex Slaves.
  • Matriarchy: And a noble one - Pine View is guided by elderly Mrs. Thompson. First chapter is much more prone to use tribalistic references and thus even narration calls her a matriarch few times.
  • Medal of Dishonor: Johnny is very thankful to Gordon's sharp mind and that little whistle... while Gordon was contemplating abandoning the whole unit and wasted a lot of time on thinking about it instead of acting and thus providing real advantage.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: The two slaves that released Gordon and Johnny and helped them escape.
  • Nostalgia Filter: Often invoked by different characters in-universe toward pre-war world. People tend to sing commercial jingles just to recall good old times.
  • Obligatory War Crime Scene: The Willamette Army on their own fallen, to convince the general public how horrrible Holnists are. Not that the Holnist themselves are saints - collecting genitals and ears of killed enemies is a standard procedure for them, just as rounding survivors for slavery and castrating males they percieve too weak.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: Gordon, sort of, as he's the most civic person in the whole Willamette Army and de facto commanding officer of it. He's not the best person for that role, which he openly admits. And he realise how bad it is to be a gentle philosopher during the war with worst kind of dishonorable, brutal bastards he could oppose.
  • One-Hit Kill: Justified, since Gordon punched Bezoar's jaw into his brain. And almost broke his hand for doing it inproperly.
  • One-Man Army: Augments both in their backstory and in-story. George Powhatan's achievements are Shrouded in Myth, just like him as a person.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: But it works, since Gordon himself is the only person knowing how he get himself postman uniform.
    • It's also reasonably downplayed early on, before the whole thing snowballed into becoming self-sustaining. Aside from the uniform, Gordon also forged few documents and had to rely on mail brought from Pine View to gain any real credibility.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: The original postman was wearing a colourful parsley shirt under his jacket. This became handy for Gordon, when he found the body years later - the uniform's shirt was almost intact in the bag in the passanger seat.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In the moment of (reasonable) weakness Gordon eagerly wanted to leave Willamette Valley after learning that Holnists are right away and just about to attack the sleeping camp of his outfit.
  • Shaming the Mob: Inverted. When Gordon is finally invited to Powhatan's Sugarloaf Peak fortress he quickly realise lies about Restored United States won't work here. Instead he ditch all the prepared in advance speeches and calls out everyone out there for their indifference and lack of action, while they have all the means and skills needed for the fight against Holnists and how things will turn out if they won't help. It still didn't work out.
  • Sherlock Scan: How Gordon deducted that Cyclops is dead and the whole thing is just a masquerade - he tied together numerous, disconnected clues and then confronted this theory.
  • Smug Snake: General Macklin truly thinks of himself as superior to everyone around and acts accordingly.
  • Still Wearing the Old Colors: Inverted. Inhabitants of Pine View assumed this upon meeting Gordon, while he himself never was a postman to begin with and simply looted the uniform from a dead body to prevent hypothermia. Later the uniform is treated as a sign of re-emerging order when he start his "Postal Inspector" act.
  • Tap on the Head: Gordon from one of the augments when they finally located the guy who keep blowing the whistle. He fully recovered from it few days later, before which he was barely conscious.
  • Taught by Experience: Willamette Army is trained this way. And by experience it means being slaughtered each time they engage Holnists.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: Villain example
—>Charles Bezoar: That's Colonel Bezoar.
  • Training the Peaceful Villagers: When things turn bad, Gordon is forced to train bunch of civilians, farmers and teenagers into force capable of fighting or at least putting organised resistance against Holnists.
  • 20 Minutes into the Future: The setting from mid 80's perspective was this. Now it's full-blown Alternate History.
  • Wasn't That Fun?: According to Johnny, he had great time while escaping Holnist HQ .
  • Unwilling Suspension: When Holnists capture Gordon for the second time, his hands are tied over his head to the beam and his feet are suspended just above the ground.
  • Worthy Opponent: One of the main points of Holnists philosophy is high regard toward people who managed to beat them, but that doesn't mean any quarter in case of being captured in the future.
    • Gordon, to his own surprise, is praised for killing of the two Holnists he encountered in the library.
    • His second-in-command, a former Marine, is equally praised by Macklin for his ability to kill his Dragons.
  • Zerg Rush: Widely used by the Willamette Army. Holnists are simply too tought and experienced for other kind of combat and even their superior training won't allow them to stop all-around attacks.

I think I said earlier in the thread that it's too difficult for us to screen entire pages full of examples. Nobody wants to take the time to sit down to look at them. I'll glance at the list you provided and see if I notice any major errors.

Okay, here goes. The first thing I notice is that you, like many non-native English speakers, leave out articles (a, an, the). These are required in English, I'm sorry to say.

  • Apathetic Citizens:
    • One of the main reason why civilisation collapsed was a common attitude of "this is not my problem" toward all the mounting issues. Humanity was able to survive the Doomwar, but wasn't able to hold against all the hardships and predatory survivalists, ignoring neighbours calling for help. This is awkwardly worded. Are the survivalists the ones ignoring their neighbors? If so, drop the comma.
    • Gordon quite vocally chews out people from the southern parts of Willamette Valley for their lack of initiative or any desire to help people in need.
  • Army of Thieves and Whores: Holnists, with emphasis on thieves. This one doesn't have grammar errors but needs elaboration so it isn't a Zero Context Example.
  • Battle in the Rain: Many, if not all of them, but the most notable is the final confrontation between George Powhatan and General Macklin, where the rain is there for purely climatic reasons. Wrong word. I think you meant climactic, but that doesn't fit either. Dramatic is probably more correct.
  • Beard of Barbarism: All Holnist's slaves have long, twisted and unkempt beards. Spelling
  • Bond One-Liner: "Never talk while you fight. It's a bad habit". Especially fitting, as Gordon is basically at the mercy of an armed and much stronger person. Always write examples in present tense unless they refer to past events from the perspective of the story.

These are a few common errors.

And I think I've already made myself clear why I stop using this thread. I fully understand your attitude, my own faults and I'm aware of my English (or lacking articles, which from my perspective are completely random and that's after 12 years of learning how to use them), but I also see how this thread is basically run by you and no-one else for past half year. By the way, this wasn't even half of the notes, but I myself get tired with writting them into entries. Lack of access to Lost and Found thread isn't helping either.

  • Apathetic Citizens:
    • One of the main reason why civilisation collapsed was a common attitude of "this is not my problem" toward all the mounting issues. Humanity was able to survive the Doomwar, but wasn't able to hold united against all the hardships and predatory survivalists it brought.[note]I guess it's now more clear[/note]
  • Army of Thieves and Whores: Holnists, with emphasis on thieves - a barely organised mob of looters that know only law of stronger, but an extremely well-trained mob. By their backstory they are all range of survivalist nuts, lowest scums of society, power-hungry slavers and failed military experiments.

Woo-hoo, a second week of almost dead thread

[up][up][up]The first comma in the "Helping Hands" line should be either a period or a semicolon. "serves" in the Plot Coupon example should be "serve". It looks like someone added that last part.

[up][up]I was about to say "accidently" should be "accidentally", but apparently that's an accepted variant. Still has a red underline in my spellcheck, though.

"scenes" should be "scene" unless there are two or more scenes where the man is seen.

gorg, your examples don't look complete but grammatically I can say that you don't write, "Averted, While..." Unless it's a proper noun a capital comes after a period, not a comma.

When you say, "Is that Pearl mentions how..." do you mean 'in that Pearl'?

@1712: I forgot to mention, the official name of the series South Park is two words, so instead of curly brackets it should use Wiki Words: SouthPark.

[up][up]DownerEnding.Music seems a bit short. Maybe add more about the way the workers start the strike or how much of the video they spend striking.

The last sentence of the Stock Unsolved Mysteries example would probably do better if it were split into more sentences. Something like: "What happened next is unclear. The colonists may have been killed by the virus. The Croatoan Indians may have killed the zombies and saved the uninfected. On the other hand, they may have wiped out all of the colonists."

[up]Recap.Steven Universe S 1 E 29 Secret Team. It seems someone edited the example for The Unreveal to "It never is explained [...] why she was curious about the shards' reaction to Rose's particular bubble," soon after post 1711 was made, so I guess that was what gorg was going for.

Pinkerton Detective

  • Captain Homer Jackson from ''Series/RipperStreet'' is a former Pinkerton who fled America after [[spoiler: secretly marrying the daughter of his wealthy employer.]] In the "Tournament of Shadows" episode, he uses his experience with the Pinkertons to go undercover with some strikers that are suspected of being connected with a series of bombings. In the "A Man of My Company" episode, a shipping magnate arrives in London with a retinue of Jackson's former comrades who want to hunt him down.

See the Invisible

  • ''Series/{{Castle}}'': The murderer of the "Clear & Present Danger" episode tries to escape arrest by using a high-tech invisibility suit. While Castle and Beckett are using fire extinguishers to put out some fires that the murderer started as a distraction and hit upon the idea of spraying them around the room to reveal her position.

Shatterpoint Tap

Mighty Med:

  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In the ep "How Mighty Med Fallen" Kaz does this repeatedly by pointing out how the villains plans could work.

  • Reset Button: Played with. Skylar went back in time to just when the annihilator was brought in so that she can work freely in their plan to turn all the superhero's into villains while the Annihilator wait's in Mighty Max Prison.

On the first one it's not 'villains plans' it's 'villain's plans' or more likely 'villains' plans' depending on if the plans belong to one villain or multiple villains. You don't need to say 'does this' and I don't see how pointing out how the villains' plans could work makes things worse.

On the second one 'turn all the superhero's into' should be 'turn all the superheroes into' since it's plural, not possessive. In 'the Annihilator wait's in Mighty Max Prison' if 'annihilator' is a name then both times it's written it should be capital, if not then lowercase. 'wait's in Mighty Max Prison' should be 'waits in' as in he does wait. It does not look played with. If it is you should say how it is Playing with a Trope but it looks like it's played straight.

Bottom line: Just an s is plural, an apostrophe-s like 's is possessive or belongs to someone and s' is belonging to a group.

[up][up][up]For the Castle example, the second sentence is a fragment. It should be "While Castle and Beckett are using fire extinguishers to put out some fires that the murderer started as a distraction, they hit upon the idea of spraying them around the room to reveal her position." As Kyle Jacobs said, "episode" should probably be before the title of the episode, not after.

[up][up]In Nice Job Breaking It, Hero, "villains" should be "villain's", and the episode title seems to be missing a "Have" according to Google. For Reset Button, "can" should be "could", "superhero's" should be "superheroes" and "wait's" should be "waits".

Hello, I am from the suspension thread and this is my example, hopefully this will prove my English is good enough to allow my privileges to be returned to me.

Chekhov's Gag: "Western Animation/Steven Universe" "[[Recap: Steven Universe S 1 E 27 House Guest]]" The Electrical duct tape when first introduced in the episode by Greg to Pearl. It ends up becoming the very solution needed to fix the Geode at the climax by [[Spoilers: sealing off the crack that was spreading on the geode after it became apparent Steven's healing tears wouldn't fix it]] at all.

Im like that guy you meet, ya know, the one with the crazy ass powers and fantastic insight on life but no girlfriend. Ya know? That guy.

Drag Queen

  • The MusicVideo for "Do it With Madonna" by the Music/TheAndroids has several drag queens dressed up as the performers mentioned in the lyrics, including Music/BritneySpears, Music/ChristinaAguilera, {{Music/Pink}}, Music/KylieMinogue and, of course, {{Music/Madonna}}.

Defector from Commie Land

  • ''Series/TheAmericans'' "Pilot": Phillip and Elizabeth are tasked with abducting a defected KGB colonel, Nikolai Timoshev before he can reveal too much about the {{Deep Cover Agent}}s to the FBI. The mission is a personal one for Elizabeth since Timoshev trained her [[spoiler: and raped her. The revelation of what Timoshev did to Elizabeth causes Phillip to kill him and stop his own plans for defecting.]]

Catch the Conscience

  • ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'' "[[Recap/AdventureTimeS4E22IgnitionPoint Ignition Point]]": After Finn and Jake overhear some conspirators planning to kill the Flame King by pouring ice in his ear, they pretend to be part of a troupe of actors and act out the plot in the middle of the performance to see if anyone in the audience will react. The plan backfires when the Flame King assumes that the play is treasonous and orders them to be executed.

Police Line Up

  • The "Indecision" episode of ''{{Series/QI}}'' suggested that these sort of identifications are on the way out because of problems with ensuring fairness, citing a particularly farcical line-up done by South Yorkshire Police in 1997. The police could not find enough people that matched the suspect because he was 6.3 foot tall and black. They got a make-up artist to [[BlackFace black-up a group of white men]], but failed to do their hands as well. Unsurprisingly, the eyewitness chose the genuinely black person.

[up][up]The quote marks around "WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse" should be ''italic markup'', i.e., two apostrophes instead of double quotes, and the link should have no spaces. The link for the episode should be rendered as [[Recap/StevenUniverseS1E27HouseGuest House Guest]]. Spoiler markup should be [[spoiler:spoiled text]].

In case that was due to trying to avoid getting styled text, you can use this markup to disable styling: [=UnstyledText=]

"Electrical" and "Geode" shouldn't be capitalized, and I believe the usual term is just "electrical tape".

[up]No problems I can find other than that "6.3 foot" seems weird, since feet are usually divided into 12 inches. Is it 6 and 3/10 feet or 6 feet 3 inches?
