Naru: Keitaro, we want to hear it! Why did you leave last night?
Keitaro: Why, you ask? Of course you don't know, you all don't understand anything. You expect people to be sensitive with your issues and problems, but when it comes to me, I get ridiculed, punched, slashed, experimented on, or any other abuses, and none of you bother to take the time to think things clearly! Well I've had it and I'm not going back! Especially you, Naru...
Naru: How dare you! Who the hell do you think you're talking to?!
Keitaro: I thought you'd say that, well let me answer that. I'm talking to the girl I'm breaking up with.

For His Own Sake by Karndragon is a Love Hina Continuation Fic/Deconstruction Fic/Crossover Fic after the events near the end of the manga, where Keitaro has finally wised up to the fact that despite everything he does for the Hinata Inn tenants, nothing ever changes. Rather than continue to take their unjustified abuse, he leaves to straighten his life out, free of the girls' abuses. The tenants and Granny Hina are not about to just let him leave, but his family and new friends have something to say about that...

Expect some heavy changes in regards to the original story. Also, as said above, this is a crossover fic. A rather loose crossover fic, but still a crossover fic nonetheless. To be more specific, it involves cameos and appearances from characters from Ranma and Evangelion, of all things.

For His Own Sake provides examples of:

    open/close all folders

    Tropes #-M
  • A Girl and Her Turtle: Nyamo and her pet giant turtle Gidget.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness:
    • When Naru is working at the Kuromitsu Inn, she attacks a man for supposedly "planning something perverted" with a woman he was with who happens to be his wife. She later gets arrested for assault. Even worse, the man she attacked was a career adviser who was going to help her plan out her job path once she graduated from school, but that's now blown out of the water.
    • Su unleashes an army of mecha-tamas upon the Kuromitsu Inn guests, directed to pursue and explode, thinking that this would "cheer everyone up". All she does is cause trauma to all who were unwillingly pulled into her "game", then eventually gets stopped and arrested by the police and Japanese Self Defense Forces. To make it worse, inspection of her room uncovers four nuclear reactors, mind control helmets and other illegal technology, making it all but impossible to bargain for her release. And then it turns out said technology entered Japan via Molmol's palace, severely cooling both countries' relationship.
  • Abuse Mistake: Deconstruction.
    • Naru sees a stranger teasing a woman he's walking with. Assuming the worst, she attacks. Turns out the guy was trying to convince his wife to play a fighting game at the arcade with him, and teasing her about how she wasn't good at them. It also turns out that attacking strangers just because you think they're doing something wrong is considered assault, and Naru is arrested. Making matters worse, the man was going to be her career adviser, but there's no way he's going to be doing that now, since she attacked him.
    • The story also goes after canon examples of this. The title refers to how Keitaro has wised up and left Hinata Inn because he realized that the Hinata girls were never going to stop making these mistakes (being too set in their violent mindset to actually stop and think "maybe this is a misunderstanding like the last dozen times"), and Keitaro's canon behavior was just enabling them to do so.
  • Abusive Parents:
    • Genma and Nodoka's treatment of Ranma is given a brief spotlight.
    • While not physically abusive, it's clear Shinobu's parents reasons for wanting to get her to come with either is less about caring about their own daughter, and more about getting her so they can strike a blow against each other, regardless of how it effects Shinobu. She chooses neither and moves in with her aunt after leaving the Inn.
  • Accidental Pervert: Played with; the tendency for Keitaro to fall into this trope (and the lack of any form of understanding, pausing to observe the situation, or acceptance of apologies on the part of the Hinata Inn residents) is one of the main reasons he is leaving the inn.
  • Accomplice by Inaction: What Shinobu and Mutsumi are called out as. Keitaro doesn't want anything to do with them at first because he's frequently beaten up and accused of trying to sexually assault them, and the two of them have done little to actually stop Naru and Motoko from hurting him even though they both know it's not true. Mutsumi vainly tries to say that's just how Naru and Motoko are and Keitaro should stop dwelling on the past. Shinobu recognizes that Keitaro is right, and is disgusted with herself for having repaid his kindness by letting the other girls walk all over her as they insist they were "protecting her."
  • Action Dad: Shinsuke taught Nagisa and Kazuya how to defend themselves.
  • Action Girl:
    • Nagisa is a great swordswoman.
    • Nyamo is shaping up to be this by training under Ranma.
  • Action Mom: Isana can defeat Nodoka with bare hands to her opponent's sword.
  • Actual Pacifist: Deconstructed with Keitaro, as it contributed heavily to the problems he faces. Due to his past refusal to fight back against Naru and Motoko's abusive behavior, this only enabled them to keep acting that way.
  • Adaptational Alternate Ending: To the canon ending of Love Hina. Instead of Keitaro marrying Naru, he broke up with her and tried to fix his life.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Canon Love Hina plays off what the girls do to Keitaro as comedy, but here, it's Played for Drama and Keitaro (and others) rightfully consider it abusive.
  • Adaptational Badass: While he has learned to fight better, the real badass level for Keitaro was when he grew a spine and stopped just taking the Hinata Girls' abuse.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Keitaro comes off as a better person after opening his eyes to his flaws and the tenants’ behavior.
    • Kanako is treated much better here than in canon due to actually caring about Keitaro.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: More like being less naive in Keitaro's case.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: the Hinata girls’ flaws are treated seriously here, resulting in some of them taking a few levels in Jerkass.
  • Adaptational Karma: The Hinata girls get this in the story after being such spoiled brats.
  • Adaptational Modesty: The cast, due to the fanservice being removed for drama.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Keitaro is less naive, more perceptive and willing to defend himself. Subverted with the Hinata tenants and Hina as they come off as more horrible in this story as opposed to canon, yet the story treats their actions more seriously than canon.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Played with for Keitaro and Naru’s relationship as the author didn't add any more flaws to it- just treated the ones that were already there as signs that Keitaro need to end it with Naru.
  • Adaptational Seriousness: The tenants’ abuse towards Keitaro and general antics is treated a lot more seriously and horrifying than in the original story.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • The Hinata girls are the romantic comedy heroes of canon, while here their Played for Drama antics make them villains.
    • Similar case with the people Ranma deals with, like his parents.
  • Adults Are Useless:
    • Very much averted. Keitaro's parents and aunts are a big help, and other adults act very reasonably in response to the girls instead of just letting them get away with things. In regards to Keitaro's family, the former uselessness is shown to be because they originally weren't communicating well enough.
    • On the other hand, when Seta tries to get his daughter to behave, he proves inept enough to need to send her to a boarding school, where the headmistress calls him out on his uselessness at disciplining his own child and shoving the responsibility off onto them.
    • It also shows how averting this trope can be played to the detriment of the hero, as adults are also wondering "Hey, why did Keitaro never report the fact that the Princess of Molmol was building giant mecha and nuclear reactors within Japanese borders? Aren't both of those kinda-sorta massively illegal?"
  • Affably Evil: Su is friendly and energetic even as she chases random bystanders with her exploding mecha-tamas.
  • The Alcoholic: Kitsune used to be one, but grows out of it during her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Kaolla Su. While she brought her arrest on herself, one can’t help but pity her in chapter 27 when she begs for a call in hopes that Keitaro will bail her out, and when her call was refused she broke down crying, saying she did not mean to hurt those people in Kuromitsu Inn and repeating that she’s not a monster.
  • All for Nothing:
    • In the final chapter, Mutsumi realizes she's burned all her bridges to get Keitaro and Naru back together and the entire quest was pointless from the start.
    • Also in the final chapter, Hina finally gives up on helping Naru, citing that she's lost her home, her friends, and her family helping a girl who simply refuses to change.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Deconstructed with Ritsuko, who regrets getting together with Gendo and would much rather have gotten with someone like (or with) Keitaro.
  • All-Loving Hero:
    • Keitaro is a deconstruction of this, as he shows affection for others and forgives them for bad behavior even when they're unrepentant and doing so just allows them to continue being violent and/or delusional. It's reconstructed when he keeps his attitude for the right people. For example, he goes out of his way to make Nagisa happy like spending his own money on a book she can't afford and displaying how much he cares for her by declaring she is a real friend when Mutsumi says bad things about her.
    • Nagisa is a straight example. She cares for those around her, including Keitaro, who she's known for only a few days.
  • All Men Are Perverts: Naru and Motoko's base assumption about males, which between that and their pride is the source of much of their difficulties.
  • All Take and No Give:
    • This is how Keitaro views his "relationship" with Naru. He forgives her for whatever violent act she does to him, but she never gives him the benefit of doubt or ever stops beating him up at the slightest provocation. Keitaro finally deciding to do something about it prompts the story.
    • This is Naru's personality in general. She's a Spoiled Brat and an Entitled Bastard, who believes that if people don't do what she wants them to do or let her do whatever she wants then they're clearly in the wrong. To her, a positive relationship is one where she's given all the attention and support she wants without ever considering the idea she might be wrong about anything. Other than that, she gives nothing to the other party whether it's Keitaro, Shinobu, Granny Hina, her parents, or her sister. Granny ends up losing everything because of how much blind support she gave Naru and doesn't cut her off until she's managed to alienate everyone she ever cared about and forced to leave Japan forever.
    • For as much as Sarah professes she is a Daddy's Girl who resents Keitaro for supposedly taking her dad's attention, it becomes clear that Sarah's love for Seta now entirely hinges on him letting her act however she pleases after being spoiled by the Hinata Inn girls. She refuses to listen to Seta when he asks her to behave, ignores his attempts to explain why her behavior is unacceptable, and then denounces him as her dad when Seta's forced to put her in boarding school. She only regrets her actions after realizing the Hinata Inn girls aren't going to rescue her, as none of them care about Sarah the way she thought they did.
  • All Women Are Prudes: Motoko believes women are forced into sexual acts by men and have no responsibility of their own. Her point is undermined when it's revealed that she has written many romantic novels.
  • Almighty Mom: Nanami, Isana, and Marumi are shown to be strong mothers.
  • Amicably Divorced: A minor example between Saori and her former husband Ushio; although they ended their marriage on bad terms, Ushio is still willing to tell Saori what happened to Naru.
  • Amusing Injuries: Averted very strongly. Keitaro getting blasted into the stratosphere might not kill him, but those incidents hurt and it's shown that the people who do think that this is funny or okay are very much unhealthy.
  • And Call Him "George": For anyone who ends up as Su's "playmate".
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: In Chapter 24, Motoko confesses to Keitaro how she wishes he'd look at her the same way he did Naru.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: Marumi to Hina, though it is shown that Marumi is the good one in the relationship.
  • Anti-Climactic Parent: Well really grandparent to Keitaro, who finds out that Hina kept his "promise girl’s" identity from him for years.
  • Anti-Smother Love Talk: Downplayed toward Shinsuke when Isana explains he doesn't need to worry about Nagisa being miserable.
  • Anywhere but Their Lips: Nagisa kisses Keitaro on the cheek to show appreciation for their day together.
  • Appeal to Inherent Nature: Mutsumi repeatedly argues that Naru and Motoko's physically abusive behavior is just how they are, and Keitaro needs to overlook the many, many times they beat the shit out of him because he "loves" Naru. Keitaro quite understandably is appalled by Mutsumi's apathetic stupidity.
  • Arch-Enemy:
    • Hina becomes this to Keitaro after he finds out the truth. Take note that is one-sided on his part, as she feels that she's trying to help him when in reality she is not. A mutual version would be between Keitaro and Naru.
    • Kagura to Nagisa because she killed Nagisa's best friend, Takeru and got away with it.
    • Chisato to Yoshinari, beginning in high school when Chisato tried to steal the answers to a test and got Yoshinari beaten.
    • Tamaki's brother sees Nagisa as this.
  • Archnemesis Mom: Hina to Marumi.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Gal: Naru and Motoko. This attitude backfires on them once they cross the line and start drawing the attention of authorities.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Su may not be overtly malicious, but her experiments and illegal activities definitely cross some lines, such as mind control technology, attacking children with exploding turtle bombs, and nuclear reactors.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
    • When Naru tries to pin all her problems on Keitaro being a pervert to excuse her behavior, the College Board asks her why she never called the police.
    • When she confronts Keitaro a second time at Tokyo University in a poor attempt to get him back to becoming manager of the Hinata Inn, she goes on about how he's still "the same horrible selfish perverted idiot she knows him to be". After her self-righteous ranting, Keitaro simply asks her despite everything she just said about him, why is she so intent on trying to get him to return being the inn's manager again, catching her off guard.
  • Ascended Extra: All the characters that were kept in the side had bigger roles (like Shinobu, Kitsune, and Nyamo).
  • At Least I Admit It:
    • When Shakiko lets some of the Hinata Girls work at the Kuromitsu Inn, she informs them that Kitsune has let her know about their past bad behavior. Naru tries to deflect the criticism by claiming that the tattletale was just as bad, only to learn that she'd already informed Shakiko of that herself. Kitsune then bluntly tells Naru that while she wronged Keitaro, she admits and regrets her crimes rather than blaming everyone but herself.
    • During his brief, unwanted reunion with Akane, Ranma admits that he shares just as much blame as her for the dysfunctional nature of their (now ended) relationship.
    • In the penultimate chapter, Keitaro admits that he and Naru are both screw-ups but unlike her, he actually acknowledges his flaws.
    • During a flashback in the final chapter, after Naru accuses Motoko of throwing away her pride after she tries to talk her down from associating with Chisato and Kagura, Motoko admits that she has no right to talk about being prideful, but then tells Naru that she has no right either.
  • The Atoner:
    • Keitaro himself recognizes that his naive, overly trusting and forgiving behavior has contributed to the problem by enabling the Hinata Girls' issues. He also sets out to try and make amends to his Aunt Marumi and cousin Yoshinari, who both suffered the consequences of certain mistakes he made.
    • Shinobu is the first of the girls to fully understand how awful she truly was, making the best effort to call the others out on their behavior while acknowledging her own role as an enabler.
    • After getting called out for her crimes, Kitsune has a Heel Realization and deeply regrets scamming and manipulating Keitaro in the past.
    • Motoko slowly works her way towards becoming this.
  • Ax-Crazy: Kagura killed Takeru by beating him with a metal rod. Akemi even namedrops this trope in reference to Kagura, telling her that she "didn't have to go all ax-crazy on him".
  • Badass Adorable:
    • Shinobu is shaping up to be this, openly calling out the other Hinata girls on their horrible behavior.
    • Nyamo has been training for 3 months with Ranma as her Sensei.
    • On the more villainous end of this trope, we have Su. She's quite cute and childish, but is fully capable of building exploding mechas, mind-control helmets, and nuclear reactors, and is very willing to use them.
  • Badass Bookworm: Yoshinari works in his mother's company after graduating from Waseda and is willing to fight if he has to.
  • Badass Family: Shinsuke's family, as each one is a trained Martial Artist.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Shinsuke, a trained martial artist, wears a business suit when he meets Keitaro.
  • Badass Pacifist: Averted with Keitaro. While he proves he is a capable fighter, his naive and overly forgiving nature causes him to suffer when he could have defended himself.
  • Bait the Dog: Kagura to Takeru, by using her fake sweet side to keep him with her.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: This story zig-zags on the issue as the girls are attractive regardless of alignment. Examples include the Hinata girls (bad), and Ritsuko and Nagisa (good), the latter defined as having a beautiful figure.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Nobody has their look disheveled, even if they're attacked.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For:
    • Naru and Motoko wish for a female manager to take over. When they get one, she kicks them all out.
    • In the last chapter, Sarah straight up tells Seta to his face that he isn't her father and wants him to leave her alone forever in a fit of anger and without thinking about it due to him leaving her at a strict boarding school. Seta ultimately decides to take her words seriously and leaves her be. She doesn't understand the depths of her actions until she calms down and wants him to take her back, only for Haruka to come in his stead and tells her of the consequences of her words.
    • Naru, being the selfish brat that she is, gets arrested over a scene she caused, and when her father, mother, step-father, and Mei try to help her, she coldly tells them off. She's so stubborn that she angrily tells her family to get out of her life, saying that Hina is the only person she'll ever need. By the last chapter, after Naru gets arrested again for her part in Keitaro's kidnapping, she's taken completely by surprise when Hina finally cuts her off as it finaly sunk in that her helping Naru had been a lost cause. With nowhere to turn to, Naru tries to reconnect with her family, who coldly push her away, wanting nothing to do with her. They're staying out of her life, just like she wanted.
  • Belated Child Discipline: Towards the end of the story, Seta in a attempt to correct his daughter Sarah's bad behavior takes her away from the Hinata Inn and enrolls her in a public school. When this fails, he instead has her placed in the care of a strict boarding school named Saint Clavicus where her attempts at disobedience is met with harsh discipline by the school's headmaster. In response, Sarah yells that Seta isn't the father she remembers and orders him to get out of her life confident that the other residents of Hinata Inn will help her escape. When she learns that none of them are able to help her, she yells that she wants to see her father only to be reminded that she cut him out of her life and that she will have to remain at Saint Clavicus's until she begins attending high school.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Motoko, which is the source of her problems with Keitaro.
  • Beneath the Mask: Hina appears as a kind old woman, however in time it's shown that she is selfish and manipulative.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Nagisa is a kindhearted girl, but even she has to restrain herself from strangling Mayako for causing her friend Takeru to die.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Su is quite childish, but she's also very smart. Those brains combined with her childlike Lack of Empathy mean that she's both a) capable of building things like giant robots and b) totally willing to unleash them on the general public, and she has no concept of "collateral damage" or "Innocent Bystander".
  • Beyond Redemption: Naru's the only one whom the narrative demonstrates is simply irredeemable by the very end. Whereas everyone else finally understood how badly they hurt others, Naru's still only focused on what she lost.
  • Big Bad: Naru Narusegawa, Keitaro's girlfriend, is here the ringleader of Keitaro's abusers, and sets out to make his life hell when he makes an effort to leave. It is slowly made clear that all his other abusers, even Motoko and Granny Hina, are being influenced by her. Later, Kagura Hajime and Chisato Ichimura, two girls from the pasts of Keitaro and Nagisa, show up and slowly hijack the plot, eventually forming a Big Bad Triumvirate with Naru for one last revenge plan involving kidnapping Keitaro.
  • Big Brother Bully: While they haven't interacted much, Naru is pretty harsh to her stepsister Mei.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Kanako inverts this, having a Little Sister Instinct towards Keitaro. Later on he plays this straight with doing whatever he can for Kanako.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Seta blocking Naru's punch toward Keitaro.
    • Haruka intervening and saving Shinobu from Kagura and Chisato.
  • Big Eater: This gets Su into trouble working at the Kuromitsu Inn by eating a huge portion of fruit slices meant for a recipe.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: Despite her insistence to the contrary, Akane is deeply saddened that her relationship with Ranma didn't work out. And by Chapter 27, she admits that Ranma was right — they were too immature to work things out properly, plus the obnoxious behavior of their families didn't help matters.
  • Big Good: Marumi takes this position eventually.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Chisato and Kagura take advantage of Mutsumi's naivete and plot to use her for their revenge schemes. She unfortunately does not see this even she's when straight out told, due to being a Horrible Judge of Character.
  • Blatant Lies: When the chefs get angry at Su for eating some of their prepared food, Naru insinuates that they simply didn't make enough and are blaming Su for it. Naturally Shakiko doesn't buy it.
  • Blackmail: One of the reasons why Keitaro resents Kitsune.
  • Blessed with Suck: Keitaro's durability kept him alive from assaults he suffered from the Hinata's tenants, but he still feels pain. In addition, it apparently motivated Su to experiment on him to find the secret of his "immortality".
  • Blind Obedience: Mutsumi in spades towards Chisato and Kagura despite having just met them.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: Downplayed as the injuries suffered in the story are treated as more of an issue than canon.
  • Bloodless Carnage: No matter what attacks he faces, Keitaro never seems to bleed at all. He still feels pain, though. This is averted in the penultimate chapter, however, when Naru loses her temper and beats a kidnapped and restrained Keitaro after he mouths off to her. The resulting beating leaves him with a bleeding mouth and broken glasses.
  • Blue Blood: Su's family. After all, she's royalty.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Su, as she is energetic and often kicks people.
  • Boy Meets Girl: Of a sort with Keitaro and Nagisa.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Kitsune and Shinobu although neither are tomboyish.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Sarah fits this trope nearly perfectly, and Suu as well despite not being the age for it. In Sarah's case, this also gets deconstructed. She's so nasty, demanding, and violent that people are genuinely disturbed by her behavior until Seta is forced to put her in boarding school when it becomes clear he can't make her behave after she attacked some kids and a teacher on her first day of regular school.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Naru, and not in a funny way either.
  • Brainwashed:
    • Mutsumi and Hina incorrectly believe that Keitaro is suffering this by others, specifically Yoshinari and Nagisa. In reality, he changed of his own free will after he finally realized what a horrible environment the Hinata Inn was.
    • In a more straight example of this, Su builds a machine to brainwash Keitaro to come back, but it fails.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: Su creates a device intended to brainwash Keitaro into acting like his old self. Mitsune is not only horrified that Su would create something like this, but that Granny Hina and Naru both are okay with it if it means Keitaro will be "back to normal" and they can get the Hinata Inn taken from Marumi.
  • Break the Cutie: Shinobu gets put through the wringer, but comes out a better person for it.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: The Hinata girls suffer this throughout the story gradually. Turns out that without Keitaro abuse holding them together, their fellowship just can't stand the test of their unaddressed flaws. And those girls who do realize what they were doing was wrong just cut all ties with the rest.
  • Break the Haughty:
    • Kitsune starts off when Keitaro tells her straight to her face how he felt about her pranks on him at his expense and saying he wants nothing to do with her, then she later gets called out by Keitaro's mother.
    • Motoko is put on the spot at a council hearing when Tsuroko and Hayato bring her back home to explain her actions while at the Hinata Inn. Due to her immature reasoning, the council no longer see her as fit to lead the God Cry School and strips her of her inheritance, as well as forces her to make amends for what she has done. Recently, she seems to have finally realized her mistakes and accepted her punishment.
    • Naru's utter refusal to apologize or admit any fault over attacking a man at the Kuromitsu Inn results in her expulsion from Tokyo University.
    • Sarah gets sent to a strict boarding school where her bratty behavior is met with harsh discipline.
  • Breaking Speech: In Chapter 23, Naru gives one to her sister Mei, accusing her of being a Spoiled Brat who pretends to care about her just to make herself look good.
  • Broken Bird: Nagisa is smart, beautiful, and and a great martial artist, but she just hasn't been the same since losing her best friend to a girl who got away with it. At least until she met up with Keitaro.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Keitaro's faith in Seta is broken when he discovers his mentor was using him to indirectly stalk Haruka. It's to a point that Keitaro decides to change his career path once he becomes disillusioned by Seta's behavior.
    • Naru's career adviser thought that someone with her drive and brilliance would make a fantastic teacher someday, but after Naru attacks a man for teasing his wife and refuses to apologize for it, blaming him for what happened, she realizes how mistaken she was.
    • By the end, Granny Hina's pedestal has been firmly shattered. Her family grows disgusted with her manipulations and cut her out of their lives. The Hinata Inn girls all realize she's not the kind, understanding Parental Substitute they thought she was as a result of their lives imploding and seeing her unsavory attributes. Though in Naru's case, the pedestal breaks the moment Granny stops helping her.
  • Brutal Honesty: Haruka drops this on Mutsumi after confronting her for bringing Chisato and Kagura into the Hinata Teashop.
Mutsumi: You're making it sound like I'm being bad and selfish!
Haruka: You ARE being bad and selfish.
    Mutsumi: Haruka... that's cruel...
    Haruka: It's the truth.
  • The Bully: What the Hinata tenants come off as when their behavior is played seriously.
  • Bully Hunter: Naru and Mokoto style themselves as pervert hunters, although what they really do is more like Disproportionate Retribution towards people who really didn't do anything lewd.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Deconstructed with Su. People tend to overlook the fact that she is a mechanical genius because of her craziness. Worse is what happens when her childlike personality and her genius intellect intersect. When that happens, she tends to break out the incredibly illegal technology to do whatever she wants, and damn the consequences. When it comes out that she got some of her things from Molmol, she landed the whole country in diplomatic hot water.
  • Burning the Ships: Throughout out this story, the Hinata girls' flaws cause them to destroy their bonds with their love ones. The ones that learn their lesson and were able to take responsibility for their actions were able repair their relationships with their loved ones. The ones that did not permanently destroyed their relationships with their loved ones with the latter wanting nothing to do with the former.
  • The Bus Came Back: Nyamo and Gidget from the original story make an appearance in this story.
  • Butt-Monkey: Naru, and the other Hinata girls, who really deserve it.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Nanami accuse Shinibu and Mutsumi of this, as for all the talk about how much they care about Keitaro, they've done nothing in regards to him being mistreated by the other tenants.
  • Call-Back: Motoko challenging Keitaro to a duel about where he is living at.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Hina gets this several times throughout the story, mostly from her family.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Naru and Motoko really don't take it well when someone calls them out on their flaws or actions, especially when said criticisms are true. Case in point: when Shinobu tells them point-blank that they're nothing but bullies who use violence to try to get their way, Motoko responds by slapping Shinobu across the face and standing back to watch as Naru prepares to beat her to a pulp, which does nothing but prove Shinobu right.
  • Cassandra Truth: Naru and Mokoto just reject what anyone says that goes against their views on life, particularly Keitaro's supposed "perversion" or their family "turning their backs on them".
  • Celibate Hero: Keitaro is a fairly downplayed example. He's not looking for a new relationship after breaking up with Naru. Although he does seem to be interested in Nagisa, and it's implied that they get together at the end.
  • Cerebus Retcon: The Hinata girls' habits, now that they are in a more serious setting.
  • Cerebus Syndrome: Towards canon Love Hina, which was a romantic comedy.
  • Character Development:
    • Keitaro takes several levels in Badass, such as standing up to the Hinata Girls and causally handling them. He has also matured, and has a clearer head. It's because of him that the other characters gain development.
    • Shinobu goes from an Extreme Doormat to a sharp-tongued Badass Adorable who calls her fellow tenants out on everything they did to Keitaro.
    • Kitsune realizes how badly she has hurt Keitaro and goes to great lengths to make amends after being evicted from the Hinata Inn. She ultimately goes from a lazy freeloader to a hard-working employee who has rejected her nickname because it reminds her of all her past sins.
    • Haruka becomes much better and attempts to help Keitaro and stop the nonsense of Hina tenants.
    • Seta takes steps to becoming a better parent first by taking Sarah out of the dorm, putting his foot down on her bratty attitude, and enrolling her in a strict boarding school when she refused to apologize. He eventually decides to step out of Sarah's life after she screamed that she hated him and wished he wasn't her father during an angry fit, internally admitting that he never was fit to raise her in the first place and it's too late for him to intervene.
    • Near the end, Motoko has finally begun to realize how unjustifiably horrible she was to Keitaro and gives him a sincere apology, and later on she even comes to his rescue after learning that he had been kidnapped.
  • Character Exaggeration: Despite appearances, this is actually averted with the Hinata girls as their flaws are treated seriously instead of being Played for Laughs.
  • Character Witness: Sousuke witnessing Mitsune stopping Su's rampage helped show how much she changed.
  • Chaste Hero: Keitaro as he didn't notice the attraction he was getting from Nagisa, at least until after their day together.
  • Chekhov's Gunman:
    • Kagura and Chisato were mentioned in flashbacks and backstory exposition long before they showed up as two of the Big Bads.
    • Kyoji, the man Naru punched in chapter 21, turns out to be Naru's career adviser. Or, he would have been, had she not up and attacked him.
  • Chekhov's Skill:
    • Keitaro's martial arts skills that that he gained while on his trip with Seta. He uses them to block a punch from Naru without difficulty.
    • In chapter 12 he starts sword training, and later in chapter 24 uses his skills against Motoko.
  • The Chessmaster: Subverted with Hina. She only got away with her stunts because nobody was aware of what she was doing. Now that people are on to her, she's lost her edge.
  • Chick Magnet: This story features both Keitaro and Ranma, who both unknowingly attract the attention of a few women they meet.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: Deconstructed. Keitaro's moved on; Granny Hina and Mutsumi haven't. Keitaro gets really upset when he finds out that Hina and Mutsumi knew all along and never told him. He also gets angry that Mutsumi decided to switch their marriage promise to Naru without telling him.
  • Childish Villain, Mature Hero: Keitaro has this dynamic with most of the Hinata Girls; whereas Keitaro accepts responsibility for his actions, communicates and listens to people, and grows as a person over the course of the story, most of the Hinata girls blame others for their actions, refuse to listen to anything that isn't what they want to hear, and actively refuse to grow as people.
  • Child Prodigy: Some rather nasty examples with Su and Sarah. Su's a mechanical genius and Sarah is a very good fighter. Unfortunately, they're both spoiled brats who use their talents to do bad things- Sarah's a bratty bully, and Su doesn't have the moral compass nor the judgement to stop herself from creating incredibly dangerous machines and using them willy-nilly.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Sarah is a familial example, as she despises Keitaro for spending time with Seta.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Deconstructed with Su. She's so weird she comes off as downright psychotic.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Anyone that has to put up with Su.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Keitaro has gathered the affection of a few women and doesn't realize it; for example, Motoko, Kitsune, Shinobu, Nyamo, Nagisa and Ritsuko. The latter two are his biggest feats as he had Nagisa fall in love with him in a few days. The same goes for Ritsuko even though the two didn't interact much.
  • The Complainer Is Always Wrong: Defied. Granny Hina and most of the girls refuse to accept Keitaro's valid complaints about their past behavior, arguing he's either holding a grudge for old problems or that he's been "corrupted" by outside influences to turn against them. Most everyone who has learned about what went on in the Hinata Inn understand that Keitaro's issues are completely valid, and even those who still think he enabled the situation (which he himself admits) still recognize Granny and the others don't have a leg to stand on.
  • Compressed Adaptation: This story uses elements from both the Manga and the Anime.
  • Continuity Nod: Keitaro has referenced a few events that have happened in the original material, like the trial he had suffered through.
  • Control Freak:
    • Naru and Motoko are a variant as either things go their way or they lose it.
    • Hina, as she tried to force things to go her way and can't accept it when they don't.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: When Naru sees Keitaro talking to Chizuka, she immediately leaps to the conclusion that the two of them set her up to get her expelled from Tokyo University, and makes a huge scene trying to confront them over it.
  • Cool Aunt: Yukina is this to Shinobu, giving her a place to stay so she won't fall back into the constant arguing between her mom and dad.
  • Cool Big Sis: Tsuruko to Motoko before the latter said some hurtful things about the former.
  • The Corrupter:
    • Hina and Naru toward Keitaro, Mutsumi, and the Hinata girls.
    • Naru and Motoko were this for Sarah, thanks to them beating up Keitaro whenever he tried to stop her from misbehaving. This results in her becoming a violent Creepy Child who thinks she can beat up anyone who tries to stop her from doing whatever she wants.
    • Mutsumi and Hina accuse the people that Keitaro is with as such.
    • Kagura and Chisato to Mutsumi when they become friends.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Hina did have a backup plan for Marumi taking over, but it did little good in the long run.
  • Creator's Culture Carryover: After Su is arrested, she is sent to Federal Prison. One problem: being a unitary, not a federated, state, Japan doesn't have a "federal" anything. Unless she was extradited to America, she would have just been kept in a prison. This is corrected, as the author wrote she is kept in a maximum security prison.
  • Creepy Child: Su's idea of fun includes kicking people in the face, chasing people around with her machines, or experimenting on them.
  • Crossing the Burnt Bridge: Naru, Su, and Sarah all try to do this near the end of the fic. Mutsumi and Hina defy this, as they know it's pointless to try and make amends, and accept that they destroyed their bonds with their loved ones.
    • After Hina cuts her out for good, Naru goes back to her mother hoping she would forget about what happened the last time they met. Naturally, she does not, and not even her stepsister Mei, who previously looked up to Naru and begged her to come home with her despite what she said to her, wanted anything to do with her. It's also revealed that Naru went to her father first but he also turned her away. She even went back to Keitaro, shamelessly expecting him to take her back, but he also rejects her. The only one in her family who was willing to take her in was her uncle. This was lampshaded earlier on by her mother who warned her that would happen if she burned all her bridges.
    • Su was so sure that someone would get her out of jail, be it her family, Hina Urashima, the Hinata girls, or Keitaro. She slowly realizes how serious her situation is and loses hope, finally accepting her fate when she's denied even the chance of apologizing to Keitaro, and finally admits that she hates Granny Hina and thinks that she's a liar.
    • Sarah angrily disowns Seta as a father, believing that the Hinata girls will come and rescue her from St. Clavius Academy. She eventually learns of what happened to them and Hina, and she doesn't take this lightly, to say the least. Eventually, after the headmaster deals with her personally, she wants to speak to Seta again to beg him to take her back, but instead Haruka comes by to inform Sarah that she'll have to stay at the academy. Sarah does not take this well, screaming and crying and begging to see her papa, but Haruka reminds her of what she had said to him the last time they spoke. Her pleas fall on deaf ears even after she claims that she didn't mean what she said.
    • Mutsumi finally realizes that she's burned all her bridges in her attempts to get Keitaro and Naru back together and that the entire quest was pointless from the start. She accepts her Toudai expulsion and leaves for Okinawa to be with her family, not even trying to attempt to say sorry or ask for forgiveness to the people she hurt, knowing pretty well they won't even listen to her.
    • Granny Hina in the final chapter finally realizes she was wrong and that her actions destroyed her relationship with her family. She helps out Naru and Mutsumi for the last time by hiring a lawyer for them before cutting them off for good, and she sadly leaves Japan with her relationships with her loved ones destroyed. It's implied that she never returns.
  • Crossover: Characters from other series have appeared in the story as Shinsuke's new tenants and Keitaro's new friends, such as Ritsuko Akagi from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ranma Saotome from Ranma ½.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Keitaro, once he started standing up for himself, proves that he can be a badass despite normally coming off as wimpy. He easily blocks Naru's punch and casually defeats Motoko.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: After Seta realizes how much of a little hellion Sarah has become due to her stay in the Hinata Inn, not to mention that she caused a lot of trouble during her first day at elementary school, he is forced to enroll her in a very strict boarding school in order to straighten her out, as her bratty behavior has become unacceptable and embarrassing for him. After Sarah disowns him as a father during an angry fit, he obliges, berating himself mentally but thinking that it is the best option.
  • Crush Blush: Nagisa has one in chapter 19 when her mom comments on how close she and Keitaro are. She has another moment in chapter 25 during her day together with Keitaro.
  • Cultured Warrior: Nagisa and Kazuya are martial artists and have a deep interest in history.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Isana's Offscreen Moment of Awesome in Chapter 22, when she took down Nodoka in a duel, breaking her arm in the process.
    • Chapter 24 gives us Keitaro versus Motoko, which ends real quickly once Keitaro actually picks up a bokken.
  • The Cynic:
    • Tamaki was accused of becoming this by her brother when she rightly complains about his friend.
    • Naru develops into this in chapter 25 after being expelled from Tokyo University.
  • Cynicism Catalyst:
    • Naru having her parents divorce and Motoko with her sister getting married.
    • Averted with Nagisa. Losing Takeru, her best friend since first grade, didn't make her cynical, although it did put a dampener on her outgoing and happy nature.
  • Darker and Edgier: The supposedly Amusing Injuries and harem antics are treated much more seriously here.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Nagisa's childhood best friend was killed by someone like the Hinata girls, fueling her desire to not let Keitaro end up like them.
  • Darkest Hour: Happens to the Hinata girls in chapter 15 when Marumi reveals she has the deed and evicts them all.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates:
    • inverted as Hina, the mother , disapproves of the people that her son and daughters had married.
    • A more lighthearted example happens with Shinsuke, as Nagisa and Keitaro (who aren't officially dating yet at this point in the fanfic) prepare to spend the day together. He still warns him about making Nagisa unhappy, though.
  • Death Glare: Nagisa gives Kagura one when she reveals that her plans will involve Keitaro.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Shinobu develops a snarkier, sarcastic side around the time she starts openly calling the other residents out on their bullshit.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Possibly with Hina's deceased husband as no one has any problem with him.
  • Deconstruction Fic:
    • The story's premise is what happens when you focus on Love Hina's case of Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male and then take out the double standard.
    • It also explores how the Hinata Girls' various Fatal Flaws would lead to major issues in a realistic context. It also shows how when left unchecked, those issues can tear apart their friendships.
    • Notably, Keitaro himself isn't let off the hook. It's repeatedly pointed out how he enabled the girls' bad behavior as well by tolerating it, and the consequences of his own past naivete are explored via what happened to his cousin Yoshinari.
    • The villainous Chisato and Kagura take Naru and Motoko's man-blaming Never My Fault mentalities to the extreme, as the latter outright murdered a boy and got away with it.
    • The story points out that just because Su is a princess, it doesn't mean that she can get away with things. Her kleptomaniacal tendencies get her in trouble to start, but her lack of empathy, coupled with her using Molmolian resources to build unbelievably illegal and lethal technology (such as mind control helmets, killer mecha, and multiple nuclear reactors), means that not only can her family not get her out of trouble this time, it results in an international incident that damages Molmol's reputation.
  • Defector from Decadence: Any of the girls that clean up their act, such as Shinobu, Kitsune, and Motoko.
  • Despair Event Horizon:
    • Naru suffers this in chapter 24 after being expelled from Tokyo U. It then escalates and gets worse when she's arrested once again for helping Kagura and Chisato kidnap Keitaro, finally causing Hina to decide she's a lost cause and cut ties with Naru after getting her a lawyer. Getting turned away by her family and Keitaro after she shamelessly tries to get their help finally destroys whatever pride she had remaining, forcing her to ask her uncle to take her in and move to America. Naru can only sit alone and remain depressed that her dreams are all ruined, unable to make any more excuses for herself and finally forced to acknowledge she is to blame for her predicament.
    • Mutsumi goes through this when she's forced to learn the hard way that yes, Kagura and Chisato were using her all along, and her attempt to get Keitaro and Naru back together was All for Nothing. Because of this, she accepts her expulsion from Tokyo University and returns to Okinawa to be with her family without saying goodbye to the boy she loved. Gone was the cheerful and optimistic girl, in her place was a depressed girl guilt-ridden and ashamed of herself, only spending most of her days in her room before breaking down and crying Tears of Remorse.
    • Kaolla Su goes through this once it fully dawns on her that she can never get out of prison, and nobody will come to get her out. She becomes disillusioned with Hina, and can only spent her days in her cell guilt-ridden by how actions ruined everything for her country, permeantly losing her cheerful and playful personality.
    • Hina goes through this after losing her inn to Marumi, gets completely alienated from her family because of her actions, and is finally forced to realize that Naru is a lost cause after hearing of how she contributed to kidnapping Keitaro. Because of this, she helps out Naru and Mutsumi one last time before cutting ties with them and leaving Japan, most likely permeantly.
  • Department of Child Disservices: Shinobu, who really needed the help, didn't get any.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Hina telling Keitaro the truth about his promise and him getting angry over it.
    • Motoko losing her title as heir.
    • In fact any of the Hinata tenants finding that their attitude is unaccepted by outside people.
    • Hina taking Marumi to court over the ownership status of the inn. She was so sure she would wind the inn back from Marumi despite having no real evidence aside from her word, which is questionable at best, and her inability to discuss further things. Despite that, Hina is shocked the judge had ruled in favor of Marumi, saying that due to Hina's poor argument, the case was a no-brainer and really shouldn't have been taken to court in the first place.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Most of the Hinata Girls, once put into normal reality. Their normal actions from canon have consequences in the real world that they never consider.
    • Naru punches a random man when she thinks he's harassing a woman (he wasn't - he was just playfully teasing his wife). This is considered assault, and she gets arrested for it. What's more, the man she punched was her career advisor, and after his wife alerts the Tokyo U. school board to her behavior, they expel Naru to save their reputation.
    • Su doesn't get the idea of 'illegal means don't do it', and never thinks about how her actions would affect diplomatic relations (since she's a princess). Her concept of "fun" (which involves [[spoiler exploding mechas]]) gets her arrested too, and because she used Molmol's resources to do it, she gets her nation in severe diplomatic trouble with Japan.
    • Hina revealing the truth behind Keitaro's "promise girl" only causes him to turn against her.
    • Kagura tries to seduce Keitaro away from Nagisa even though he's already fully aware she's an Alpha Bitch and she's attempting to do so after kidnapping him.
    • Naru, being a selfish Spoiled Brat, cuts off her whole family after accusing them of being frauds who don't really care about her (when it was just her being a selfish brat who wanted all the attention on her and her only), basically telling them to get out of her life while bragging how Hina will always be there for her. In the final chapter, when Hina finally cuts Naru off for good, Naru shamelessly goes back to her family, fully expecting them to take her back. They don't.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper:
    • Motoko does this when called before a family council and asked to explain her behavior. Rather than acknowledging her own mistakes, she continues to blame Keitaro, and does so even after being stripped of her status.
    • Naru does the exact same thing when asked by the president and board members of Tokyo University to explain her actions at the Kuromitsu Inn. She actually names Keitaro and tries to write off what she did as a reflex from "dealing with his perversions" all the time. Unfortunately for her, they do not take victim blaming as a reasonable argument.
  • Diplomatic Impunity: Realistically defied. When Suu effectively perpetrates an act of terrorism, she's swiftly arrested. Furthermore, once her room is raided, her status as princess only makes things worse, since she's been abusing diplomatic privilege to get extremely dangerous and illegal goods into Japan via the Molmolian embassy. With international relations already damaged, Molmol is forced to save face by withdrawing her protection, hanging their princess out to dry in the name of the nation's wellbeing.
  • Disappeared Dad:
    • Koshiro, Yoko, and Marumi's dad passed away when they were young.
    • Naru feels that her dad Ushio was this, despite his attempts to reconnect with her. Naru is too stubborn to see otherwise.
  • Disappointed in You:
    • Hina tries playing this card on Keitaro after learning that he left the Inn. It doesn't work.
    • Tsuruko towards Motoko after learning how her sister feels about her marriage, and the rest of their family towards Motoko after learning about her bad behavior. (They're also none too pleased with Tsuruko, mind you...)
    • Ida, Naru's school advisor, is deeply disappointed after learning about her Tragic Impulse, especially after Naru outright refuses to apologize and blames the victim instead.
    • Marumi toward Hina for breaking her promise of allowing her to inherit the inn and making a huge mess with what Hina went with instead.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Whenever Naru and Motoko are criticized for their actions.
  • Distressed Dude: Defied by Keitaro. When Su tries to use her machines to kidnap him, he has a device to counter them. This is unfortunately played straight near the end of the story however, when he is kidnapped by Chisato and Kagura.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Inverted with Kitsune, who post Heel–Face Turn wishes to be called her real name, Mitsune. She associates her old nickname with her past bad behavior, and doesn't want to continue down that path.
  • Does Not Like Men: Naru and Motoko think that All Men Are Perverts and that as such, they are justified in hitting any man who annoys them. This gets them in very hot water.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Deconstructed with Keitaro. Part of the story's premise is his realization that being this with Naru won't cause her to change and will just allow her to abuse him more.
  • Domestic Abuse: Keitaro has suffered this at the hands of Naru and the other tenants, but now he will no longer tolerate it.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Averted. All abuse (including the Hinata girls' canon treatment of Keitaro) is treated equally and none of it is Played for Laughs.
    • The story kicks off when Keitaro quits his position as manager at the dorm because of how badly its tenants treat him.
    • Motoko gets her position as the heir at the God Cry School revoked because her belief in this trope does not hold up in reality.
    • Later on in the story, Naru attacks a man on the mere suspicion that he might be doing something perverted (which isn't the case), and gets arrested for it. This incident also gets her expelled from Tokyo U, and to add insult to injury, the man she assaulted turns out to be a career advisor who was going to help her get a job after she graduated but he decides not to anymore due to her violent nature.
  • The Dragon: Mutsumi. Unlike most, she works for more than one Big Bad at a time.
  • Dramatic Irony: Mutsumi convinces herself that Keitaro's being misled by bad influences when she's the one with False Friends.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point:
    • None of the Hinata Girls get that the reason Keitaro left was that they were bad influences. Shinobu and Kitsune later got the point, and as of Chapter 25, Mokoto has started to get it too.
    • No matter how many times she's called out on her behavior, Granny Hina refuses to acknowledge that she might have done things the wrong way. Instead, she insists that everyone who isn't going along with her plans are in the wrong. By the time she finally gets the point, she has lost all her power and influence to make amends.
    • Naru and Motoko have the same issue, continuing to blame Keitaro for everything bad that results from their own actions.
    • Mutsumi still continues to think that things will work out between Keitaro and Naru despite overwhelming evidence saying otherwise, not to mention both sides continually telling her that they want nothing to do with each other.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Kanako toward the Hinata girls, as they remember the treatments she inflicted on them.
    • Chisato and Kagura invoke this in anyone who knew them before the story.
  • Driven to Suicide: Done literally, and combined with Taking You with Me. After giving the police enough evidence to have Kagura's family arrested, Mayako drives Kagura's limo off of a cliff, with Kagura, the girl who killed her brother Takeru, and Akemi, the girl who caused Kagura to kill him, in the limo with her.
  • Dwindling Party: The Hinata girls lose their members as the story go on either by getting into serious trouble or the members reforming, starting with Shinobu, later on Kitsune, Su, and now Motoko.
  • Dysfunction Junction: The Hinata Inn. Most of its residents actively resist any efforts to help them improve.
  • Easily Forgiven: Deconstructed and played straight throughout the fic.
    • Deconstructed in Keitaro's case. He realizes forgiving the girls so frequently for their abuse only enabled them to become worse. They're all legitimately shocked that he's holding them to task, arguing he never had a problem with their antics before to the point it's implied they genuinely didn't believe they were doing anything wrong they were that deluded from being sheltered in the Hinata Inn for so long.
    • Played straight with Granny Hina and Mutsumi. They're so set on Keitaro and Naru remaining a couple that they repeatedly ignore, excuse, or forgive her for beating him up. They spend all their time trying to convince Keitaro not to break his promise and no effort at all to make Naru stop hurting him, accusing him of holding a grudge or erroneously claiming things would've improved "eventually." They defy it at the very end when Keitaro's almost killed by Chigusa and Kagura, realizing they were wrong to support Naru and realizing no one's going to forgive them for helping her.
  • Enfant Terrible: Sarah is a bratty, spoiled bully who resorts to violence when she doesn't get what she wants, and Su is a dangerously immature Gadgeteer Genius.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: The Hinata Inn residents cause this in Keitaro. Mutsumi on the other hand gets this from pretty much everyone. Specific examples:
    • Mutsumi gets this flung at her by Keitaro, who was angry that she just wasn't taking the hint that he no longer wants to be with Naru and saying that it will never work out. Despite all the proof, Mutsumi still insists that he make up with Naru. That becomes the final straw and Keitaro straight out tells her to stay away from him from now on.
    • Naru's mother Saori is also angered at Mutsumi's naive thinking that Naru had gotten better from her sickness due to "the magic of the inn", but really it was due to taking her to see a specialist to heal her. Saori is greatly angered that Mutsumi believes she must be mistaken, despite being Naru's mother who was with her the entire time.
    • Haruka also couldn't take Mutsumi's stupidity in trusting two people she just met in her quest to "help Keitaro". Even after telling her about their unsavory history, Mutsumi still believes they are not bad people and sides with them due to her determination to get Keitaro and Naru together again. Haruka angrily fires her and bans her from the Hinata property as a result.
    • While Keitaro is being held hostage by Kagura, Chisato, Naru and Mutsumi, Kagura attempts to seduce him, only to be flatly rejected. Despite the surrounding circumstances, Mutsumi still clings to her delusional belief that her False Friends are trying to help her get Keitaro and Naru back together, with Keitaro expressing disbelief at her naivete.
Mutsumi: Kagura, you shouldn't do that. Keitaro is Naru's beloved.
      Keitaro: Oh for God's sake!
    • When Mutsumi then asks why there's a gang ready to pummel Keitaro, Yoshinari and Nagisa, Chisato finally loses her patience and slaps her, ordering her to shut up. She and Kagura then hit her with a Breaking Speech about how much she's been ignoring reality, declaring that there should be a limit to her stupidity.
Chisato: Will you just shut the hell up? Even Naru said that she didn't want to work things out with Keitaro, who what makes you think that after all that was said, all that you heard that things were going to go as you wanted?
Kagura: It was so easy to have you wrapped around our fingers, but even so, we didn't think that you were so... well, so stupid. I mean there has to be a limit of how stupid someone can be, right?
Chisato: Why on earth would we ever actually be friends with someone like you? That is the kind of thing why even Naru can't stand you.
Mutsumi: Stop it please, we're friends. You said it that we're friends.
Kagura: (addressing her goons) Hey you three, (points to Mutsumi) deal with her as well.
Mutsumi: Wait what? No, what are you...? No, don't do this.
  • Entitled Bastard:
    • The Hinata girls all fully expected Keitaro to just keep covering for them and doing everything for them despite the fact that they mistreated and physically beat him on a regular basis; now that Keitaro has left the Hinata House behind, the girls are finally forced to face the consequences of their actions.
    • Naru in spades. No matter how badly she treats other people, she still expects everyone else to move heaven and earth solely for her own benefit and refuses to consider why such behavior would be a problem. Nowhere is this more blatant than in the final chapter - after getting arrested for the second time, she's finally cut off by Hina, who finally realizes her mistakes in how she handled things, and with nowhere else to go, Naru tries to ask her family to let her move back in with them, expecting to be welcomed back with open arms despite how horribly she treated them the last time they met. Unsurprisingly, neither of her parents is willing to let her come home or forgive her, and Saori is especially offended that Naru is continuing to act as if nothing happened. Finally, Naru then tries to crawl back to Keitaro to get together with him again despite everything she's done. Naturally, he refuses. And what's worse is that Naru doesn't even try to reflect on or apologize for what she's done as she continues to think she didn't do anything wrong.
    • Sarah is also this in spades after Seta sends her to a strict boarding school where she gets punished for every offense she commits. When Seta comes to visit her in the final chapter, she begins ranting about how much she hates him for putting her in the boarding school and that Naru and Hina will get her out and things will return to the way they were before. She doesn't give Seta a chance to explain what happened to the people in question who are in no position to help her, instead screaming that Seta just get out of her life. Eventually, Sarah does find out that Hina no longer has control over the inn and its tenants have been evicted. She then begs a visiting Haruka to talk with Seta to have him take her out of the boarding school, only for Haruka to remind her that she was the one who cut him off.
  • Entitled to Have You: A strange example - Mutsumi (on an almost fanatical level) adamantly believes that Keitaro and Naru are meant to be together.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Naru to people she perceives as betraying her.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: While not directly evil, the Hinata girls deeply care about Hina, who acts like a mother to them. However, they do not really listen to her when she needs them to.
  • Even the Dog Is Ashamed: After Tsuruko calls her out for her behavior and leaves, Motoko tries to follow, but is driven off by Shippu. The yellow crane proceeds to give her a Death Glare until she leaves.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Major subversion with the Hinata girls. The only reason they weren't taking their issues out on each other was because they were all focusing their abuse on Keitaro. Once he bugs out, their group quickly falls apart.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Hina has shown disapproval of the girls hitting Shinobu as she confronts Naru and Motoko about it. Of course, this appears to be her only standard, as she still continues to make excuses for their actions after this.
    • Another example of this is Hina telling Mutsumi to stay away from Kagura and Chisato as they are bad people - it's true, if morally myopic because she continues to support Naru, whose actions are similar and who has teamed up with them by that point. In the end, after Naru is arrested for her part in helping Kagura and Chisato kidnap Keitaro and threatening his life, Hina finally gives up on her completely, realizing that Naru simply refuses to change and she's wasted all her time and lost her home, friends, and family trying to help her.
    • There are the slightest hints of this from Kagura in the final two chapters. In the first she mutters under her breath that that Takeru wasn't supposed to die hinting that while she's unrepentant and refutes responsibility for it she wasn't deliberately setting out to kill him. In the second she says that she went after Takeru because of a friend of hers claiming he was acting like a pervert, implying she would have otherwise left him alone and wasn't doing it For the Evulz. It's also very lightly hinted that she's bothered over killing someone that ultimately hadn't done anything truly wrong.
    • Chisato also seems to be morally offended by Kagura’s betrayal and Naru herself objects when both of them are about to sic their thugs on Mutsumi.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Keitaro's aunt Marumi understandably has a low opinion of him and clearly believes he worsened the Hinata Inn's atmosphere by enabling the girls, but at no point does she ever say Keitaro deserved to be abused and is eager to throw them out because of their destructive and toxic attitudes.
    • The headmistress of St. Clavius Academy does not have a good opinion of Seta, calling him out on his uselessness at disciplining his own child and instead shoving the responsibility off onto her and the school. Even then, she feels pity for him when Sarah disowns him as a father and yells that she hates him.
    • Saori admits to Naru she does not have a great relationship with her ex-husband Ushio, but she still tells Naru that she's disgusted with the way she treated him and understands why he did not let her move back in with him after getting evicted and expelled.
  • Evil All Along: Hina has been manipulating everybody around her, especially Keitaro.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • The Hinata Girls, while destructive, are ultimately just spoiled brats who never learned that Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male was not the way of the world. Kagura and Chisato, however, are straight evil, and in Kagura's case, downright murderous.
    • Inverted with the people Keitaro meets at Shinsuke's apartment. One great example is Nagisa to Motoko - both are swordswomen, both have the surname of Aoyama, and both met up with Keitaro, but the similarities end there. As Nagisa is nice, polite, and really honorable, unlike Motoko, and has a genuinely tragic past: her best friend since first grade, Takeru, was murdered, and the girl responsible got away scot-free, which she hasn't used as an excuse to become a bitter Jerkass.
  • The Evil Genius: Su, although she's not so much evil as a Spoiled Brat who's very childish for her age and level of intelligence.
  • Evil Is Petty: The Hinata girls, Hina, Kagura, and Chisato.
  • Evil Matriarch: Hina, though she's more selfish and deluded than actually evil.
  • Evil Parents Want Good Kids: Played with for Hina as her ideas of good are way off.
  • Exact Words: Used by Haruka against Granny Hina. She warned her not to give the deed to Kanako, but didn't warn her against giving it to Marumi...
  • Extreme Doormat: Keitaro used to be this, and the whole reason he left the inn was to break out of that mentality and start making amends.
  • Failure Hero: Keitaro suffers this until he leaves the Hinata Inn.
  • Fair-Weather Ex: At the end of the story, Naru tries to get back with Keitaro, not because she regrets abusing him or because she loves him, but because her friends and family cut her out of their lives and she has no one else to turn to. Keitaro, having grown a spine, refuses. It speaks volumes about how entitled and selfish Naru really is that she would have the nerve to ask Keitaro to take him back after everything she’s done and said with her previously, stating that she never wanted to get back together with him again. Motoko, who has since reformed and is regretful for how she treated Keitaro, called Naru out on her actions, saying that she is disgraceful for having the nerve to ask Keitaro to take her back without even apologizing to him.
  • Fair-Weather Friend: The friendship between the Hinata Girls is Deconstructed into this. Abusing Keitaro allowed them to ignore their severe issues (like Naru and Mokoto's violence, Mutsumi's delusions, Su's casual destructiveness, and so on), but now that they don't have a convenient target to focus on, they start to turn against each other.
  • Fallen Princess: What Su becomes after getting arrested.
  • Family Theme Naming:
    • Mitsune's mother and brother are named Mitsuko and Mitsunari respectively.
    • Most of the named female members of the Aoyama family have names that end in -ko. Motoko, Tsuruko, Etsuko, etc.
  • Fantasy All Along: What the magic of the inn turns out to be to Mutsumi.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Granny Hina, Haruka, Naru, Motoko and Mutsumi are all blinded by their Pride.
    • Mutsumi is so dead-set on being a Love Martyr by setting up her beloved Keitaro for happiness that she blinds herself to the fact that it's not what he wants.
    • Suu's lack of touch with reality. She is cheerfully oblivious to how her antics can make others uncomfortable and is used to having any problems she causes fixed by others. Her confused insistence that this should still be the case after a Deconstruction moment occurs doesn't do her any favors.
  • Faux Action Girl: Naru. She thinks she is a strong woman who fights perverts, but she is nothing more than an irresponsible bully who folds and screams when things don't get her way.
  • Female Misogynist: For all of their vain defenses that they're looking out for other women like Shinobu and Su, Naru and Motoko genuinely aren't kind to any gender. Aside from their skewed belief that women don't have "perverted" thoughts, they also look down on girls who "submit" to men.
    • Motoko loathes her sister because Tsuruko married Hayato, believing she was weak for abandoning her responsibilities to the God Cry School by chaining herself to a man.
    • Naru lashes out at Chizuka for being "ungrateful" after she assaulted her husband, and even goes as far as to blame Chizuka for the misunderstanding by accusing her of lying about the situation.
    • Naru and Motoko both immediately turn on Shinobu after she finally stands up for herself, and were ready to beat the shit out of her for being "ungrateful."
  • First Father Wins: A sad subversion with Ushio, as Naru has no affection for him after he divorced from Saori.
  • First Girl Wins: Subverted. Keitaro and Naru did date, but they didn’t end up in a permanent relationship. Hina believes this. Keitaro doesn't.
  • Foil:
    • Etsuko to Hina. Shakiko is a stronger example as she runs her inn well, actually cares about her grandchild and is reasonable.
    • In a way, the other Hinata girls are this to Naru. Note how throughout the fic each one experiences a certain series of events that parallels ones experienced by Naru, but where the other girls eventually man up and confront their issues, Naru instead escalates the situation and retorts to blaming others.
      • Shinobu finally confronts her divorced parents and lets them know that she is tired of being their excuse to fight, and after some harsh words they manage to come to an understanding, while Naru uses a similar situation with her own divorced parents to insult her step-relatives and basically burn bridges.
      • While in Shikako's Inn Naru slacks off on her responsibilities when the work interfered with her plans and unnecessarily escalated a situation with her violent antics, Mitsune took her responsibilities with complete seriousness, got in the fireline to protect the visitors during Su's rampage, and even confessed her previous misdeeds to her employers to prevent misunderstandings.
      • When Motoko finally realizes the error of her ways she makes the effort of legitimately going to the people she mistreated and apologize, while Naru only tries to "apologize" to her convenience, not actually feeling sorry.
      • While in prison, Suu finally gets how her actions affected not only her but her relatives and the people she cared for and becomes terribly remorseful; while Naru, even when finally catching that she was in a hell of her own doing, still thinks on how it affected her personally, with no second thoughts to the people she screwed in the way.
      • And finally, contrast Naru's Toudai expulsion audience with Mutsumi's: Naru basically claims that she has been set up, that nothing was her fault, and reacts with such anger and violence to the council questions and final decision she has to been dragged out by Security, while Mutsumi takes the audience calmly and seriously, takes responsibility over her acts, and apologizes for the loss of reputation she may have brought to the institution.
  • For the Evulz: Kagura takes sadistic glee in her cruel acts.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Ritsuko's presence and the lack of any sort of devastation means this story takes place in a timeline where Second Impact never happened. Note that only Ritsuko and Gendo are brought up; no other Evangelion characters like Shinji or Asuka are brought up, meaning we don't know what they are like.
  • For Your Own Good: Mutsumi seriously thinks her forcing/trying to get Keitaro to go back to Naru is this despite the glaring evidence showing that it is NOT healthy for either.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Chisato wears glasses and is a terrible, manipulative person. Her first appearance in the fic has her stealing an answer book, and when Yoshinari confronts her, she manipulates Keitaro into thinking she's going to return the answers.
  • Freudian Excuse:
    • Subverted with the majority of the Hinata girls. Their excuses for their bad behavior are shown be very poor indeed. Notably, Nagisa has a worse past than most of them (Kagura killed her best friend and got away scot-free), and yet is nowhere near their level of Jerkass.
    • Especially Naru and Motoko, as Naru's misandry began when her parents divorced and her mother later got remarried. Meanwhile, Motoko's began when her sister Tsuruko had turned down the position as heir of the God Cry School in order to get married. Neither of their "excuses" are presented as justifiable in the slightest when it came to their abhorrent behavior, and ultimately drive home just how utterly unsympathetic they are.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: During a sit-down with Marumi, Granny Hina explains why she broke her promise to let her inherit the Hinata Inn. She had a very difficult relationship with her eldest daughter Yoko, which culminated in Hina refusing to help her when she needed it, followed by Yoko suddenly and tragically dying in a car crash that same day. Hina felt guilty about the fact that her last conversation with Yoko before her sudden death was an argument, and to try and make up for that, she converted the Hinata Inn into an all-girls dorm and took in the Hinata girls, essentially spoiling and coddling them in addition to breaking her promise to Marumi. As Hina angrily leaves, still refusing to believe she did anything wrong, Marumi sadly notes that Hina's husband and Yoko would disapprove of her actions.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Turns out that's how the Hinata girls view each other once they don't have Keitaro around to abuse anymore.
  • Friend to All Children: Kitsune becomes this after helping to save them from Su's "play time".
  • Gadgeteer Genius:
    • Sosuke, Marumi's husband, has show great skills with technologies as he has created a device to counter Su's mind control machine, opened her electronically lock door, and causally shut down Mecha Tama while siting in the back of a police car.
    • Ritsuko demonstrates her ability by examining Su's mind control machine.
    • Su herself, as in canon. Unfortunately, she lacks the responsibility to use her devices properly.
  • Genius Bruiser: Yoshinari is a graduate from Waseda and a strong fighter.
  • Genki Girl: Su has a lot of energy. Unfortunately, her outlets for said energy are... not the best.
  • The Glasses Come Off: Keitaro does this to prove to Marumi and Yoshinari his resolve to change himself, as he now sees the glasses (which were frames similar to Seta's in appearance) as a symbol of him blinding himself to the truth.
  • Good Parents: Isana and Shinsuke. They even extend their care to Ranma, as Shinsuke gives him a real home and a job at his apartment, and Isana dealt with Genma, Nodoka and Soun for him, even breaking Nodoka's arm in a fight to keep them away from Ranma.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Kagura's father is the reason she can get away with most of what she does, but he limits his involvement to giving her resources.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Followed by Green-Eyed Epiphany and overlapping with You Need to Get Laid, this revealed to be the reason for Motoko's hatred of Keitaro. It was easier to hate Keitaro rather than be depressed he chose Naru over her. Kanako posits that that if she DID get together with him, Motoko would be a lot more willing to listen to his reasoning. This only further intensifies when Motoko discovers Keitaro is getting along just fine with her aunt and uncle's family as she tries to convince Nagisa he'll abandon them like he abandoned the Hinata Inn. After she challenges Keitaro to a fight and loses, Motoko finally breaks down from despair at seeing how happy Keitaro is in a way he never was at the inn, asking why her family likes him so much yet despises her so and why he couldn't have been happy with the girls.
  • Grew a Spine:
    • Shinobu becomes much more assertive and tougher, and fearlessly calls the other girls out on their awful behavior.
    • Keitaro doing this and getting out of the Hinata House's toxic environment is the premise of the fic.
  • Grimmification: Downplayed as the original story is already for an older audience, however the adaption changes to have more of an edge.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Naru's most Fatal Flaw, which ends up getting her into serious trouble.
  • Happily Adopted: While not legally adopted, Ranma is very happy with Shinsuke and Isana caring for him.
  • Happily Married: Many of the married couples in this story, such as Kyoshiro and Nanami, Tsuruko and Hayato, and Marumi and Sosuke are portrayed this way.
  • Hated by All: By the end of the fic, this status has been reserved for Naru and Granny Hina. They've been cut out from their immediate families and lost all of their friends due to their selfish, inconsiderate ways. At the very least Naru has her uncle's family, but while they've taken her in it's never made clear if they actually like her. Granny Hina on the other hand leaves Japan in shame with no one to rely on for companionship, all because she tried to help a spoiled little girl.
  • Hate Sink: In this Deconstruction Fic about female-on-male abuse, most of Keitaro Urashima's abusers become sympathetic by the end. These four, however, remain unlikeable and unrepentant:
    • Naru Narusegawa is depicted here as Keitaro's abusive ex-girlfriend. The primary antagonist, Naru is slowly shown to be the ultimate instigator of Keitaro's Domestic Abuse, often accusing him of being a pervert and violently beating him regardless of his protests and encouraging the other girls to join in. When Keitaro finally leaves to escape the abuse, Naru manipulates Granny Hina into trying to rope him back in. Throughout the fic, while the other girls gradually change out of their bad behaviors, Naru continues to screw herself over and blame everyone but herself for her misfortune, even teaming up with Chisato and Kagura to take revenge on him.
    • Chisato Ichimura shows herself to be a loathsome Manipulative Bitch. In the backstory, she attempted to steal a book from her teacher's desk and use it to cheat on the upcoming tests. When confronted by Yoshinari Urashima about it, she convinces Keitaro that he is harassing her. After getting back the book, she sends her thugs to beat up and hospitalize Yoshinari. Eventually, she meets up with Kagura Hajime and Naru, teaming up with them to get further revenge on Yoshinari. Falsely befriending Mutsumi, she uses her to set up a trap for Yoshinari; when he arrives with Nagisa, Chisato orders her thugs to slaughter them, then decides to throw Mutsumi in to die as well.
    • The aforementioned Kagura Hajime is Chisato's equally deplorable Rich Bitch friend. She abuses him, kills him in response to a False Rape Accusation, and uses her father's money to buy off lawyers who get it declared an accident. She taunts Nagisa Aoyama, who loved Takeru, whenever they meet. Seeking to destroy Nagisa, Kagura teams up with Chisato and Naru to kidnap Keitaro, Nagisa's boyfriend, and lure her into a trap. She sexually harasses Keitaro while he is tied up, telling him of her plan to make Nagisa jealous when she walks in on them. When the plot fails and police arrive, Kagura abandons her co-conspirators and tries to pin the blame for Takeru's murder on Akemi, showing her complete Lack of Empathy.
    • Akemi Kuga is the one who made the False Rape Accusation against Takeru that cost him his life. Though only physically appearing in one scene, she proves herself to be just as horrible as the others. When Mayako traps her and Kagura in a car intending to drive it off a cliff and kill them all, Akemi attempts to put all the blame on Kagura to save herself, and when Kagura yells at her for lying about Takeru, she tries to pass it off as a joke.
  • Hates Their Parent:
    • Naru lashes out at her biological parents and her stepfather for not giving her enough attention. She's hated her father ever since he divorced her mother, and hates her mother ever since she remarried and Mei entered the picture. Naru refuses to have anything to do with them as she believes they betrayed her, when it's clear she's just an Attention Whore who couldn't handle not being the center of their respective worlds. By the very end, once Granny Hina's cut her off for good, Naru shamelessly tries to beg her parents to let her come back home. Her father refused, and her mother reminded Naru of the horrible things she said when she turns her away.
    • Sarah, despite hinging her dislike of Keitaro because she believed he was taking Seta away from her, gradually grows to hate him because he refuses to let her get away with her bad behavior. After putting her in St. Clavius, Sarah tells Seta she doesn't consider him her father anymore. She quickly comes to regret this when Seta takes this to heart and decides he's not fit to be her father. Sarah only regrets her words after Haruka shatters her belief that Naru and the girls will come rescue her since they've all left.
  • The Heavy: Granny Hina and Mutsumi are the most recurring enemies of Keitaro who constantly try to manipulate him into getting back together with Naru, the actual Big Bad who prefers to let them do all the work.
  • The Hedonist: Kitsune before her Heel Realization.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: For multiple characters in the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue.
    • In the final chapter, when Kagura's scheme comes to light to Hina, she finally admits she had done wrong. It is far too late, though, as none of her family wants anything to do with Hina anymore and cuts her off.
    • It takes a long while (and a Humiliation Conga's worth of rejections from everyone she'd burned bridges with) but by the time Naru finally realizes that most of her misfortunes were her own fault, she has to move to another country to start over again since everyone else she knew in Japan wants nothing to do with her anymore.
    • Sarah finally sees the error of her Bratty Half-Pint ways... right after being told Seta took her declaration of never wanting to see him again at its word and leave her permanently in the care of St. Clavius.
  • Heel Realization:
    • Keitaro has had one concerning how he acted towards his family who tried to help him.
    • Kitsune is hit by one upon realizing that she's acting no different than her Con Artist father.
    • In Chapter 24, Motoko acknowledges her own issues, and admits to realizing this in the past, but it takes her a while to fully kick her bad habits.
    • In the final chapter, Hina admits how badly she screwed up and ended up driving away her entire family.
  • Help Mistaken for Attack: Keitaro often helps Shinobu, but Naru and Motoko think he's attempting to be perverted with her.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: The Hinata Girls have very bad cases of this. Naru and Motoko are at the front of the line, followed by Suu, Sarah, Mutsumi, and Hina.
  • Hidden Depths: Isana has been shown to have great Martial Art skills as she is able to detect people miles away from her, and the ability to fight really well as she defeated Nodoka. What's more, Isana was unarmed while Nodoka had her sword and Isana won easily with no injury and Nodoka suffered a broken arm.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • Kagura betrays Chisato when the police arrive so she can escape, and doing so ultimately seals her fate as in her haste she jumps into her limo expecting a quick getaway, but discovers Mayako is behind the wheel instead of her butler. This not only puts her in the perfect place for Mayako's revenge but leaving Chisato behind deprives of her of possible assistance. Mayako even lampshades that the cops arresting her probably looks a whole lot better compared to what she'll receive now.
    • Sarah decides she doesn't want anything to do with Seta because he won't let her behave as violently as Naru and Motoko let her be at the inn. She genuinely expects the Hinata girls and Hina will get her out of St. Clavius. She learns in the final chapter from Haruka that Hina's gone, Naru's gone, and the girls aren't coming for her. Sarah breaks down realizing only person actually cared about her, and she drove him away.
    • This entire fic is basically Naru doing this to herself. She is completely convinced that she's done nothing wrong and repeatedly ruins her own life thanks to her smug, violent personality. After disowning her parents and sister screaming none of them understand who she is, Naru's shocked when Saori refuses to take her back in after Ushio turned her away as well. As Saori puts it, Naru abandoned them first and is only groveling because Hina cut ties with her.
  • Honor Thy Abuser: Deconstructed. Granny Hina and Mutsumi both want Keitaro to overlook Naru's actions because they feel it's more important to uphold the past promises he made. This mindset only makes everyone turn against the two, especially Keitaro, as Naru shows no signs of changing her behavior or wanting to change. As a result, both are left with nothing when Naru's plotting with Chisato and Kagura gets exposed.
  • Hope Spot:
    • There's one for Hina in chapter 13 when it seems like Keitaro will come back. He doesn't.
    • Chapter 16 seems like things have a chance to go back the way it was beforehand for the Hinata girls, but later chapters show it doesn't.
  • Horrible Judge of Character:
    • Keitaro before the start of the story. Even before he signed on as manager of the Hinata Inn, when he and his cousin caught a girl stealing test answers, he believed her claims that she'd return them, and tried to convince Yoshinari not to report her. Later, a group of obvious thugs asked him where Yoshinari was, claiming they were her friends and she wanted to thank him. Keitaro told them where he was, and Yoshinari ended up in the hospital. He got a serious calling out over that.
    • Mutsumi keeps viewing Naru through rose-colored glasses because of the whole Promise Girl thing, and refuses to accept that Keitaro wants nothing to do with her anymore. She also trusts Chisato and Kagura and keeps defending their actions, even though they’re barely making any effort to conceal their ill intentions. It isn't until the very last chapter, when Chisato slaps her across the face and she and Kagura tell her point-blank that they were just using her and are sick of her stupidity, that Mutsumi finally gets it.
  • Hourglass Plot: After three years as the Hinata Girls' personal Butt-Monkey, Keitaro takes control of his life and sets out digging himself out of the hole. While he gets back on track, and some of the others follow his lead and do the same, the much more stubborn girls start suffering the consequences of their actions and fall from grace.
  • House Husband: Shinsuke, though played with as the house he cares for is an apartment complex on multi acre property he owns and runs.
  • Housewife: Nanami helps run the bakery she and her husband own. Isana and Marumi avert this as they have a job and run a company respectively.
  • Hypocrite:
    • Granny Hina accuses people of being needlessly hurtful towards her or manipulating others when that pretty much sum up her actions the entire story.
    • Mutsumi fits the bill as well. She goes and completely trusts two unsavory girls she just met, then afterwards tells Keitaro that "he can't just go around believing what everyone else just says." Likewise, she tells Keitaro he needs to stop dwelling on the past whenever he brings up all the times he was beaten and accused of assault and at the same time says he needs to "remember the good times" he had with Naru as incentive to reunite.
    • Motoko goes on and on about how men are "vile perverted scum who think of nothing but to force women into sexual acts". Too bad for her that her secret stash of adult novels she herself had written get found out.
    • Naru treats her sister Mei horribly, calling her a leech and believing she's selfish just because Naru "wouldn't show her a little attention." Naru just exactly described herself, a parasite who rejected her family just because her mother wasn't giving her full attention towards her once she remarried.
  • I Can Change My Beloved: Deconstructed. Keitaro realizes Naru's not going to become a better person, specifically because he kept enabling her abusive actions by thinking all she needed was patience and understanding. The same extends to the rest of the girls, and they only begin to change once they understand the scope of their deplorable actions. And even after Naru destroys her life and all her bonds, all she cares about is what she personally lost and not how others suffered thanks to her.
  • Idle Rich: Kagura's family is apparently loaded, and her father's resources and connections are the reason why she's not in jail for Takeru's murder. Mayoko solves that problem.
  • Idiot Hero: While he was more naïve than dumb, Keitaro gradually moves away from this.
  • Improperly Paranoid: As is argued and pointed out by multiple people, Naru's and Motoko's belief that Keitaro can't be trusted around other women because of his "perversions" is utter bullshit. All they've done is abuse and belittle him any time he so much as looks at a girl. Beyond that, they both seem to believe men in general are raging perverts and that women are incapable of ever having physical urges or desires that weren't forced onto them by a man. By the end of the story, it becomes clear Naru had a hand in worsening Motoko's views which Motoko honestly didn't help by her refusal to believe Naru would ever steer her wrong.
  • Instant Expert: Keitaro has been learning the counters to Motoko's attacks in a matter of days.
  • Invisible Parents: Averted as Keitaro's parents have a larger role in the story.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy:
    • Deconstructed with Mutsumi: she's so dead-set on getting Keitaro together with Naru, whom she thinks he'll be happy with, that she ignores their repeatedly telling her that they don't want anything to do with each other.
    • Kanako plays this straighter. Although she loves Keitaro very much, she recognizes that they can't be together, and is content to see him settle down with somebody he's happy with... and who isn't toxic like Naru.
  • Ignored Epiphany:
    • Early on, Granny Hina is shocked to hear the way Naru and Motoko talk about her grandson, and is saddened to think that Keitaro may rightly despise her for allowing such abuse to go on. Unfortunately, this does not prevent her from trying to manipulate him into returning, and as time goes on becomes more firmly entrenched on the Hinata Girls' side, continuing to excuse their behavior rather than laying down the law. It happens again in chapter 15 when it looks like that Hina is finally getting that Naru and Motoko are awful when they attack Shinobu and refuse to apologize, she was going to say something about what she was going to do but was distracted. Afterward she continues to make excuses for the girls bad behaviors. In the final chapter, Hina finally wises up and cuts Naru off after her involvement with Keitaro's kidnapping. It was just too little too late as Hina's own family cut her off for all she's inadvertently caused.
    • Come Chapter 24, a defeated Motoko breaks down and admits that she actually realized in the past that her behavior was wrong. However, rather than take responsibility, she continued down her destructive path for a couple more episodes, and has to face the consequences. At least she has another epiphany around episode 25 that does stick.
    • Haruka drills some truths into Mutsumi of what has been happening and why Keitaro left because of what they did to him. She tells Mutsumi that everything Keitaro is doing is of his own volition and that he's clearly happy with his new life, so they have no right to force him into something he doesn't want. However, reason goes out the window when Mutsumi meets up with Kagura and Chisato, whom she trusts explicitly just because they said they would help her get Keitaro and Naru back together again. Haruka was clearly pissed about this despite recent events that not only does she fire Mutsumi, but she also bans her from the Hinata Inn property.
  • I Know You're Watching Me: When Naru was eavesdropping on Keitaro and Seta, Keitaro shows that he was aware that Naru was watching him since she first arrived.
Keitaro: *sighs in annoyance*
Seta, concerned: Keitaro, what's wrong?
Keitaro: Hang on, Seta. *he turns around* It's not nice to eavesdrop, Naru.
  • Implied Love Interest: Nagisa starts showing interest in Keitaro after he moves into Shinsuke's apartment. She's later upgraded to an explicit love interest.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Motoko is declared to be this after her trial, and much to her surprise so is Tsuruko. The council and their grandmother declare that their replacement is to be possibly either Kazuya or Nagisa.
  • In-Series Nickname: Keitaro being called a pervert or idiot, regardless of accuracy.
  • Insistent Terminology:
    • Naru and Motoko talking about Keitaro's "perversions."
    • Marumi being called aunt by Haruka.
    • Inverted with Hina being called mother by Sosuke.
  • Ironic Echo: Naru recalls Keitaro calling her out on her behavior getting her into trouble sooner or later after she gets arrested for assault.
  • Insane Equals Violent: Naru and Motoko have serious issues that cause them to lash out. Su also loves violent 'play'.
  • It Amused Me:
    • Kitsune, but she quickly grows out of it after a serious wake-up call.
    • Suu is also horrible about this, as she tends to not notice or outright ignore any signs others aren't enjoying 'playing' with her.
  • It's All About Me:
    • Granny Hina and most of the Hinata Inn residents suffer from this.
    • Naru in particular is so self-absorbed that when Keitaro breaks up with her, she continues to treat him the same way she always does while privately focusing on how she's hurt by being dumped. She’s even willing to ally with two very bad people just to get revenge on Keitaro. Even by the very end, she only feels guilty about everything she lost but it's implied she never actually feels bad for the people she hurt.
    • Su twists things around in her mind so that anyone who doesn't do whatever she wants is a 'meanie' who doesn't want to play with her, completely failing to notice why they might feel that way.
    • Sarah is a clingy Spoiled Brat who resents Keitaro simply because he's working for her father, believing that he's taking him away and turning him against her.
    • Mutsumi may act like she's motivated for the sake of Keitaro and Naru, but by the end of the story it's obvious her delusions about their "love" are based on her desire to believe she's a good person who sacrificed her love to make someone else happy.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Pretty much all of the Hinata girls fail to recognize that they are living in a world where their actions are unacceptable. More specifically:
    • Naru and Makoto believe that All Men Are Perverts, and that said perceived perversion is deserving of immediate and violent retribution. They just can't accept that they're jumping to conclusions and dishing out Disproportionate Retribution based on said hasty conclusions.
    • Suu assumes that everyone else shares her idea of fun, and that nothing she does hurts anyone. This includes chasing after people with exploding robots, destroying the surroundings and traumatizing many of them.
    • Mutsumi believes that Keitaro and Naru are meant to be together because of their Childhood Marriage Promise, and that she must be a Love Martyr and get them together at all costs. In reality, Naru is abusive to Keitaro, who has moved on because he recognizes that staying in that relationship would not be good for him.
    • Hina honestly believes she'll get the Hinata Inn back from Marumi, and that Keitaro is going to help her, despite at this point Keitaro's made it clear he wants nothing to do with his grandmother after the way she's manipulated him.
  • I Resemble That Remark!:
    • Naru and Motoko whenever it's pointed out they use violence as the solution to their problems.
    • Hina as well when she uses her lame excuses.
  • It's Personal: Nagisa toward Kagura, as Kagura killed her best friend and now is after her new friend and love interest Keitaro.
  • Jack of All Stats: Keitaro has unarmed and sword fighting techniques.
  • Jealous Parent: Shinobu's parents often fight over her, although it's less about Shinobu's wellbeing and moreso to deal a blow against their former spouse.
  • Jacob and Esau: Naru incorrectly believes that her mother favors Mei over her, but in reality Naru was just being a brat.
  • Jerkass: Most of the of the Hinata Girls are selfish and treat others (especially Keitaro) badly. The ones who fall into this the most are Naru, pre-Heel Realization Motoko, and Sarah.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Ranma is confronted by Akane, he bluntly acknowledges that he is equally to blame for the failure of their relationship as she is.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: After being little more than a selfish Jerkass for most of the fic, Naru sides with Chisato and Kagura to get revenge on Keitaro, still refusing to accept that all of her misery is her own damn fault.
  • Just Between You and Me: Inverted with Hina, who doesn't explain the whole story or just reshapes her own version when telling someone.
  • Just Friends: What Nagisa says that she and Keitaro are. Although she thinks that she wouldn't mind if they were more than that.
  • Karma Houdini: Nagisa had to deal with one of these when Kagura murdered her friend Takeru. Kagura's father and his lawyers ensured that the death was ruled 'accidental'.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty:
    • All of the Hinata Girls suffer a massive Humiliation Conga after Keitaro, who finally Grew a Spine after years of "comedic" abuse, leaves the Inn and dumps Naru, and, in trying to undo those, find that reality kicks in hard on them. For most of the fic Hina, Naru, Motoko and Mutsumi keep trying to get an extension of their warranty, but the more they try to get so the harder their own bad choices end biting them. By the final chapter, only Naru is the one who still acts like the warranty is still valid on her and insist on Crossing the Burnt Bridge she herself torched.
    • Kagura's expires in the final chapter when Mayako (Takeru's sister) performs a Murder-Suicide with her.
  • Karmic Shunning: The Hinata girls gradually end up pushing away their friends, family, and other loved ones as a result of their childish, self-centered, violent, and responsibility-dodging behaviors. With the exception of Naru, they end up undergoing a Heel Realization.
    • Koalla Su ends up getting arrested for injuring several people with her Mecha-Tamas, in addition to owning illegal technology that includes mind-control devices and nuclear weapons. As a result the kingdom of Molmol, in order to maintain good relations with Japan decides to disown Su.
    • Sarah's bratty behavior results in her getting sent to a strict boarding school by Seta. Sarah disowns Seta as a father, thinking that the Hina girls will rescue her. Once she learns that they can't help her, she begs for Seta to take her back, only for Haruka to remind Sarah that she disowned him.
    • Naru loses her boyfriend Keitaro, because of her abuse, is isolated by her own friends for her violent behavior, and disowns her own family out of pride. By the end of the story, Naru ends up having nobody in her life, as all of the people she harmed and cut ties with want nothing to do with her no matter how much she tries to beg for a second chance.
  • Kick Chick:
    • Su uses flying dropkicks as a way to say hello.
    • Sarah immediately resorts to kicking others in the shins when things don't go her way.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Motoko slapping Shinobu and sitting by as Naru plans to beat her up.
    • Suu chasing children around with her inventions (which are directed to 'pursue and explode').
    • Naru calling her dad a cowardly bastard when he was trying to help her, as well as her calling her mom a fraud and stepsister Mei a leech when they try to bail her out of jail.
    • Kagura gleefully brags about killing Takeru to Nagisa, and openly shows no regret for doing so.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: Motoko slapping Shinobu and Naru trying to beat her up show how bad they have become or truly are.
  • Kids Are Cruel: Sarah, who was already a brat, got worse after spending time at the Hinata Inn, where the actions of the others convinced her that she could get whatever she wanted if she demanded it and/or was violent about it and that consequences didn't exist.
  • King Incognito: Deconstructed. Suu's status as a princess becomes a problem after she attacks the Kuromitsu Inn guests for fun. Amalla states that Molmol's reputation is now ruined since Suu's actions were seen as an act of terrorism. Oh yeah, the whole thing was on the news, too...
  • Knight of Cerebus: The Hinata Girls, as much as they are violent, delusional Jerkasses, are ultimately just spoiled brats. Chisato and Kagura, on the other hand, are downright evil.
  • Knight Templar: Mutsumi and Hina are willing to go crazy lengths for a supposedly good goal- the former worked with Kagura and Chisato and the latter is willing to allow Keitaro to be brainwashed.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All:
    • Naru and Motoko believe that they are are always right in their accusations of perversion. They are not.
    • Mutsumi falls into this as she acts like she knows what's best for everyone when she clearly doesn't due to her skewed view of events.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When Haruka threatens to call the police on Mutsumi, Chisato, and Kagura if they didn't leave, the latter two wisely choose to leave.
  • Kung-Fu Kid: Sarah, who automatically resorts to physical violence when things don't go her way.
  • Lack of Empathy:
    • Naru and Motoko feel no remorse for anything they've ever done as they believe they are perfectly justified in what they do. It doesn't help in the slightest that Hina always makes excuses for their actions.
    • Because of her stay at the Hinata Inn, Sarah was given the mindset that she can do whatever the hell she wants without consequence. Because of this, Seta is forced to enroll her in a strict boarding academy.
    • Suu is blissfully unaware that her "playtimes" are incredibly destructive. When she destroyed the Kuromitsu Inn and traumatized the guests. Even after getting arrested and being on the receiving end of much angry reactions from said guests, she STILL convinces herself that there was no real harm done and that the people were just exaggerating.
  • Lady of War: Nagisa, a graceful young woman, uses a katana as her weapon of choice.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: This whole story is how, without Keitaro to take the falls for them, the Hinata Inn residents get this.
    • At Kagura and Chisato's urging, Mutsumi tries to spy on Keitaro while he and his friends are at the arcade. After being caught by Kanako, she proceeds to badmouth Keitaro's new friends and uses her deluded reasoning once again. After Keitaro finally snaps and thoroughly calls out Mutsumi on her bullshit reasoning, she slaps him for it and, in turn, receives a brutal punch to the face by Kanako in response]].
    • Naru gets expelled from Todai as a result of her actions, namely punching a man who turned out to be her career advisor, wrongly thinking that he was doing something perverted, and blaming him and his wife for "sending the wrong signals".
    • Kagura in the final chapter. After everything she's done she winds up in the perfect position for Mayako to pull off a Murder-Suicide as revenge for Takeru's death.
  • Last Girl Wins: Nagisa is the one to hook up with Keitaro in the end.
  • Let Her Grow Up, Dear: Downplayed with Shinsuke as he gave Keitaro a warning about making Nagisa unhappy during their day together but Isana assured him Keitaro wouldn't do that.
  • Licked by the Dog: Marumi has shown fondness by Tama.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Nagisa gained her mother's good nature and fighting skills.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Deconstructed once Keitaro is finally let in on the loop concerning the identity of his 'promise girl'. He's furious that he was kept out of said loop, and his relationships with the people who knew are severely damaged.
  • Loose Lips: Sarah in two instants - first in chapter 16 when she indirectly reveals that Seta had been using Keitaro as a link to Haruka, and then chapter 21 when she gushes about how much better things were at the Hinata Inn.
  • The Lost Lenore: It's implied that Takeru is this for Nagisa. She says that Keitaro is a lot like Takeru, and later on in the story, she develops romantic feelings for him.
  • Love at First Sight: Downplayed as Nagisa finds Keitaro "interesting" when they first meet, and later on in the story, Nagisa reveals that she has fallen in love with Keitaro.
  • Love Cannot Overcome: This provides Keitaro's impetus for leaving the Hinata Inn. He thought he could help Naru be a better person, but after three years of being beaten up by her for things that she's imagined he realizes their "love" is a lost cause that'll likely get him killed if he stays with her.
  • Love Freak: Deconstructed - Mutsumi is fanatically determined to hook Keitaro and Naru up because she "cares about them and their futures together". This only serves to turn everyone else (including Keitaro) against her, as the relationship she was supporting was completely toxic.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: Mutsumi again, exponentially. She refuses to accept the major flaws in her plan to "help" Keitaro when they are shoved in her face because she's such a great judge of character and knows better than anyone else.
  • Love Martyr: Deconstructed with Mutsumi. She loves Keitaro and wants him to be happy- it's just that she's such a Horrible Judge of Character that she thinks he'll be happy with Naru, and she's so focused on being their Love Martyr that she'll hear no evidence that Keitaro and Naru just are not good for each other.
  • Madden Into Misanthropy: Keitaro, oh so very much - after three years of being Mr. Nice Guy and receiving nothing but scorn from the Hinata tenants, he finally snaps and leaves, but not before finally making clear how much he hates them now and giving all of them a verbal beatdown and pointing out all their Fatal Flaws.
  • Made of Iron:
    • Keitaro is this, although he still feels pain. It's the reason he survived his time at the Hinata Inn.
    • Shakiko is struck with an exploding Mecha-tama and although she is knocked unconscious, she recovers relatively easily and with no injuries.
  • Mad Scientist: Su is a mechanical genius who can create exploding mechas and mind-control helmets and sees nothing wrong with casually using them.
  • Mama Bear:
    • Nanami makes it very clear that nobody is going to harm her children on her watch, not even her own mother-in-law.
    • Marumi is understandably very protective of her son Yoshinari.
    • Yukina willingly takes in her niece Shinobu after she leaves the Hinata Inn, even going in to defend her while she picked up her belongings after hearing about Naru and Motoko attacking her.
    • Most amazingly, Isana wins this hands down for Ranma by curb-stomping Nodoka off-screen, even breaking her arm in the fight. That's right, Isana went Mama Bear on Ranma's mother.
  • Manipulative Bitch:
    • Granny Hina was pretty good at manipulating Keitaro and his family in the past. She's tried to keep her game going now that they've wised up to her actions, but finds herself failing more now that everyone's communicating.
    • Mutsumi is this unknowingly.
    • Kagura and Chisato. They're manipulating Mutsumi, and later Naru, into helping them with their plans by telling them exactly what they want to hear about Keitaro and his recent behavior.
  • Martial Pacifist: To further contrast Motoko and Naru, Nagisa is peaceful and personable.
  • Mask of Sanity: As a result of Keitaro dumping her for her abuse, Naru's starts to crack. People who had faith in her like Seta and her advisor Ida are shocked at how violent and self-absorbed she really is, despite initially seeing her as a bright and driven young woman. The longer the story goes, the more the mask cracks until it's finally obliterated, following how she's expelled for assaulting a professor and gets arrested for conspiring with Chigusa and Kagura.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": In chapter 15 when Marumi announces that she is the new owner of the inn and kicks out all the tenants.
  • The Matchmaker:
    • Hina for Keitaro and Naru, which set the plot of the original series.
    • She also tried to pair her daughter Yoko to Shakki's son Sanji instead of Toji.
  • Meaningful Name: Nagisa is a name for those who help and comfort others. Her name also means shore, Fridge Brilliance as a reference to the original Taro Urashima that the series is based on.
  • Men Act, Women Are: Deconstructed, of course. According to Naru and Motoko, all men are perverted beasts who can't keep their hands or eyes off women. They seem to believe most women don't have any actual agency, nor are they capable of "perversion." Or at the very least, that's how they'll act when justifying their abuse of Keitaro. In Naru's case, she's got no issue Slut-Shaming Kitsune by claiming all she ever does is use her body to taunt men and extort money from them.
    • Motoko is called out of this mindset by her parents and the council of the God Cry School. For good measure, she's exposed as a hypocrite when Tsuruko reveals the sexual stories Motoko wrote about Keitaro.
  • Men Are Childish: Mutsumi weakly counters Keitaro with this after he explains clearly that Mutsumi never once helped or supported him in times of need like she said she would, only instead obliviously causing him harm at the hands of the other tenants. She simply tells him he's acting like a child for making such a big deal about something so "minor". Because of this, Keitaro lost any hope of getting Mutsumi to see his side of things and cuts his ties with her.
  • Miles Gloriosus: Naru, in the past, along with the others, would overwork Keitaro like a slave despite having his own things to do. When working at the Kuromitsu Inn, she brags she could handle it, but backpedals when told she has to work a set time slot, which she complained would take too much of her study time. Shakiko wouldn't hear any of it and gives her the choice to do it or just leave. Kitsune also calls Naru out on her hypocrisy.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Keitaro constantly by either Naru or Motoko. Their tendency to do this is Deconstructed, as their constant assumptions on this line are symptoms of their deep problems. A specific example is given in Naru enabling Sarah's bad behavior by incorrectly assuming his trying to discipline her was him trying to make a move on her, and going Pervert Revenge Mode on him because of that.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: And the Hinata Girls were surprised that Keitaro would up and leave after how they treated him.
    • In the final chapter, Naru was greatly surprised when her family cut her out of their lives after all the hurtful things she said to them when she was first arrested, telling them to get out of her life. When that failed, Naru was also surprised when Keitaro refused her offer to get back together with her despite all she's done to him.
  • Moral Myopia:
    • Hina honestly seems to think that everything she does is right, and that everyone who doesn't go along with her wishes is horribly misguided. She's even willing to accept the idea of Suu brainwashing Keitaro to their standards in order to "put him back on the right path again".
    • Mutsumi falls into this as well. She's willing to side with a Manipulative Bitch and a downright killer in her attempts to get Keitaro and Naru back together, even though both of them explicity tell her that they want nothing to do with each other.
  • Morality Pet: Shinobu appears to be this at first to the older girls, but they really bully her, and when she stands up for herself, they have no problem harming her.
  • Mundane Solution: Whenever the former Hinata Inn residents or Hina try to explain why they take an overly complex or violent solution to a problem, they are frequently asked by someone else why they didn't take one of these instead. Keitaro, Shinobu, and Mitsune admit they were simply being stupid. The others, not so much.
  • Murder-Suicide: Kagura's ultimate fate is to be locked in a car with Mayako which she drives off a cliff.
  • Must Make Amends:
    • Aside from Shinobu, Kitsune/Mitsune tries to mend bridges with Keitaro.
    • Keitaro towards Marumi and Yoshinari for not taking what they knew about Hina seriously and because of it, alienating himself from them and putting himself through the unnecessary hardships from managing the Inn. He deeply regrets letting his childhood obsession promise and Hina drive him apart from the family who really cared about him.
    • After her council hearing, Motoko is forced to do this for Keitaro for all the pain she inflicted on him. Unfortunately, she never planned to as she STILL continues to blame Keitaro for her misfortunes. Though by the end of the fic she finally has sincerely apologized to Keitaro and patched things up with him.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg:
    • What Keitaro ultimately was to the Hinata Inn girls, as their personal whipping boy whom they kept around because he'd never punish them for their bad behavior or try to throw them out. Only a few of them ever actually cared about his wellbeing, and go out of their way to atone for hurting him once they're read the riot act.
    • Sarah becomes a more tragic example of this. She foolishly thinks Naru and the others will save her from St. Clavius, to the point of disowning Seta. She then learns from Haruka that no one's coming for her; Granny Hina's gone, Naru's gone, everyone's gone. It then dawns on Sarah that Naru and the rest never actually cared about her that much. Naru only "looked out" for her because she was Seta's daughter. Once she was taken from the inn, she vanished from their thoughts. This breaks her.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Played with; Mutsumi follows Hina's plans when they are bad but believes them to be good. Yet near the end Mutsumi stops listening because she believes Hina wrong about Kagura and Chisato when Hina is actually right.

    Tropes N-Z
  • Never My Fault: Most of the Hinata Girls have this problem.
    • Naru has this the worst. She constantly berates and insults Keitaro, then turns around and acts like he's in the wrong when he snaps back. She also refuses to admit that she assaulted a man who was teasing his wife, instead accusing him of provoking her with his perverted behavior (and once more blaming Keitaro for supposedly instilling the reflex to act this way in her).
    • Similarly, Motoko keeps threatening Keitaro, and acts as though he's the one who's being unreasonable.
    • Granny Hina is apparently incapable of seeing how her own actions are driving her family away, as well as how her leniency with the girls has only amplified their issues. Thankfully, by the end of the story, she subverts it and finally realizes how much of a terrible person she’s been towards her family.
    • Suu also struggles with this, thinking that her unleashing her Mecha-Tamas on the Kuromitsu Inn guests was "all in good fun" and no real harm was done despite her getting arrested for it.
      • When she steals some of the cut fruit to eat, the chefs notice there's not enough slices left and confront her on it. Both she and Naru try to blame them, claiming they didn't make enough slices and are merely looking for a scapegoat.
      • This becomes subverted in Chapter 27 while she is in prison. Su desperately wants to talk to Keitaro and apologize, breaking down as she realizes she unintentionally caused harm by her actions.
    • In Chapter 24, Motoko still blames Keitaro for her own misfortunes... at first. She then starts to blame Naru for reinforcing her issues, but catches herself, admitting she shouldn't do that.
    • Ironically SHINOBU of all people goes through this as she believes the others girls are causing Keitaro to leave, while ignoring her role. In Chapter 4 Keitaro calls her out on this as he point out that while the other girls caused him pain, she hurt him as well. For example, when she is near him it causes Naru and Motoko to think Keitaro is being "perverted" with her and punish him for it, and she acts like she knew that Kitsune like to make up things to get people rile up, yet Shinobu always believes her.
    • Chisato blames Keitaro and his cousin Yoshinari for getting her expelled when she was stealing the answers to an exam.
    • The continued refusal to take responsibility becomes deconstructed as well. Naru, Granny and Motoko lose all sympathy because they continually refuse to admit their faults. When Naru is confronted by the school council over her Hair-Trigger Temper and she attempts to blame Keitaro, it doesn't prevent her from getting expelled from Tokyo University, and it is pointed out that she is not acting like an adult. Granny's relationship with the family falls apart and she keeps digging herself deeper. It takes Motoko losing her position as heir to the God Cry School (i.e. everything) for her to realize the error of her ways. Overall, anyone refusing to take responsibility for their actions will be seen as immature by everyone around them.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Hina keeping the identity of Keitaro's "promise girl" away from him and revealing this information to him to get him to come back to the Hinata Inn only serves to drive him away from her.
    • Naru ends up squandering her chances at a good job after graduating when she attacks a man that turns out to be her career adviser.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown:
    • Naru is about to deliver one to Shinobu, but Haruka stops her from trying.
    • Kagura gave one to Takeru that resulted in his death.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: In the final chapter Kagura throws Chisato to the police so she can escape herself.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Hina doesn’t actively abuse Keitaro (justified with her age) but her manipulations are ruining his life. She’s not actually the Big Bad, however.
  • No Social Skills: Basically all the Hinata Inn residents, but heavy emphasis is placed on Naru, Motoko, Mutsumi, and Sarah, whose lack of social skills have gotten them in serious trouble.
  • No Sympathy:
    • Hina, while disliking the treatments Keitaro went through, doesn't really show much consideration of the pain he suffered. She also barely shows any to Shakiko when she has her inn destroyed and is injured.
    • Mutsumi doesn't care in the slightest about the pain Keitaro suffered at the Hinata Inn, prioritizing Naru's wellbeing as more important while telling Keitaro he's fixating on the past.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: Keitaro to the Hinata girls, standing up for himself when they come to harass him.
  • Not a Game: Suu in spades as she fails to realize her "playtimes" are destructive which in the end gets her arrested. Even in prison during interrogation, she begins to whine about how she "doesn't like this game they're playing" and wants to go home, appalling the detectives. They tell her in dead serious tones that this is no game and that she's up to her eyeballs in trouble.
  • Not Good with Rejection:
    • Naru does not take Keitaro breaking up with her well and spends most of the story trying to get back at him for "ruining her life".
    • Mutsumi doesn't take Keitaro's breakup with Naru well, either, and continually tries to "help Keitaro see the light", despite Keitaro and his friends telling her to get lost.
    • Kaolla Su, after Keitaro cuts his ties with the tenants, wouldn't accept he wants nothing to do with them, so she attempts to have him kidnapped and brainwashed to her way of thinking so he would never want to leave.
  • Not Helping Your Case:
    • Granny Hina tries to get Keitaro to return to his duties at the Hinata Inn by revealing that she knew all about the promise years ago. This only angers Keitaro, making him see her as a Manipulative Bitch. Nice going.
    • How do Naru and Motoko respond to Shinobu stating that they both use violence and bullying to try getting what they want? Motoko slaps the shit out of her, then stands by and watches as Naru prepares to beat her senseless.
    • When Naru tries talking to Keitaro about what's been happening at the Inn since he left, she blames everything on him and calls him selfish for not wanting to return. This leads to him asking why she wants such a 'horrible person' to come back.
    • Motoko's entire reasoning to the family council for her past constant attacks on Keitaro consisted of this.
    • Seta fails to convince Haruka to marry him, and Sarah doesn't help with opening her big mouth about how he would ask Keitaro anything about Haruka in order to get close to her. Haruka and Marumi are not happy with this revelation.
    • When Seta later gets called in by an elementary school teacher for Sarah's bullying behavior, the teacher demands to know how exactly he disciplines his daughter, and he tries to explain. Unfortunately, Sarah starts bragging about her time at the Hinata Inn where she acted like a little hellion and how it was more fun than her first day at school. Seta immediately wishes she would just shut up as it is NOT helping.
    • Whenever Naru and Motoko tell others Kitsune's not trustworthy because she lies and uses her body to manipulate men, they're then asked why such an untrustworthy person was never punished despite the two often claiming they're looking out for others' wellbeing. Especially considering they frequently call Keitaro a pervert as justification for attacking him, yet have admitted how often Kitsune lied about him doing perverted things to mess with everyone. Motoko tries this when Etsuko and the God Cry School elders admonish her hypocrisy, and Naru does it when Shakiko reveals Kitsune told her about what happened at the Hinata Inn. Both times occur when Kitsune shows far more culpability than either of them, having given Tsuruko the erotic novels Motoko wrote about Keitaro and having confessed her actions to Shakiko.
    • Naru's actions at Tokyo University entirely. Especially the incident where she attacks her career adviser, then blames her actions on him.
  • The Not-Love Interest: Subverted with Nagisa. Right after she says she and Keitaro are just friends, she reveals in her mind that she desires something more.
  • "Not So Different" Remark:
    • Nagisa compares Keitaro to her friend, Takeru, who was like him in personality as well as being an Extreme Doormat to Kagura, but in the end was beaten to death by her.
    • Part of Kitsune's Heel Realization comes when she realizes how similar she is to her Con Artist father.
    • After Naru, Mutsumi, and Chisato get arrested, Hina visits to bail the former two out. She glares at Chisato, angrily telling her she used Nauru and Mutsumi for her own ends. Chisato scoffs and says Hina wasn't any better since she's done that herself as well.
  • Not So Weak: Keitaro proves to be this as after leaving Keitaro effortlessly defends himself whenever Naru or Motoko attack him.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Naru and Motoko offer vain excuses that they were trying to protect others from Keitaro's "perversions," no matter how times they've been told he wasn't actually doing anything. Naru especially is held to task by Seta when he discovers how badly her behavior has warped Sarah's development. When she claims she was worried about Sarah being mistreated by Keitaro, Seta argues she allowed Sarah to misbehave to her heart's content by beating up Keitaro whenever he tried to discipline her, thus teaching the girl she can do whatever she likes because she won't be punished for it. Motoko is later called out on her hypocrisy about Keitaro's "perversions" when her family and the God Cry School elders are shown the erotic novels she wrote about Keitaro.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Deconstructed with Naru seeing a man talking to a woman who appears nervous - thinking that he was a pervert, Naru punched him and gets arrested as the two people are a married couple, and he was just playfully teasing his wife about a fighting game.
  • The Oathbreaker:
    • Granny Hina tries to make Keitaro feel guilty about not keeping a promise he made when he was five to get him to return to being manager again. It doesn't work.
    • Marumi does the same thing to Hina, which actually works better since she broke a legitimate promise to Marumi.
  • Obliviously Evil:
    • Hina and the Hinata girls are incapable of seeing their actions as wrong.
    • Suu especially is too mentally immature to tell that her ideas of "fun" are very destructive and actually believes trying to blow people up would "cheer them up".
  • Oblivious to Love: Keitaro, although this is justified as he had suffered in his misjudged attempts at finding it.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Motoko loathes her brother-in-law Hayato with a passion and refuses to acknowledge him as part of her family, even after he took the Aoyama name. She sees him as proof of Tsuruko's supposed weakness for "shackling" herself to a man and abandoning her duties to lead the God Cry School. It's obvious Motoko's just jealous of how happy the two are.
  • Obviously Evil:
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: How the girls react to Keitaro blowing them off instead of apologizing.
    • Instead of trying to catch Mutsumi when she faints (due to not being able to accept that he doesn't want to get back with Naru), he lets her fall onto soft grass, then leaves a note telling her to go see a doctor, since fainting all the time isn't exactly healthy.
  • Obsessed with Food: Suu, which gets her into trouble after she eats some fruit slices that were intended for use during a recipe.
  • Official Couple Ordeal Syndrome: What Naru and Keitaro went through and ultimately caused Keitaro to break up with her.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Isana gets one in Chapter 22, beating Nodoka in a duel and breaking her arm.
  • Oh, Crap!: Several cases with the Hinata tenants after facing reality ensues.
  • One Side of the Story: Invoked multiple times whenever Naru or Motoko attack and only use THEIR side because they refused to admit they're wrong.
  • Only Sane Man: Poor Shinobu finds herself as this, being the only tenant at the Hinata Inn who realizes how unfair they were being to Keitaro. Haruka is also this, then later, Kitsune becomes one as well.
  • Ordered Apology:
    • Mitsune orders Naru to apologize to a couple for punching the husband under a false accusation. Naru refuses, telling her that she's in no place to do so, but then gets ordered by Shakiko to do so. It's deconstructed later, as when Naru confronts Chizuka for reporting her actions by reminding her that she apologized, Chizuka correctly points out that she only did so because she was told to, and even then she still blamed her and her husband for her choice of action, proving that Naru is not sorry at all for what she's done. This only gives Chizuka more incentive to see to it that she's expelled.
    • Sarah's told again and again to apologize when she attacks people, but she refuses. She won't even do it for her supposedly beloved father Seta, proving how far she's gone.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Chisato and Kagura are genuinely evil as opposed to the Hinata girls, only being “mere” spoiled brats.
  • Papa Wolf:
    • Kyoshiro Urashima is this to Keitaro and Kanako.
    • Shinsuke to Nagisa- he gave Keitaro a stern warning not to make his daughter miserable.
  • The Paranoiac: When the Hinata girls try to beg Keitaro to come back, Motoko phrases it as her believing he can't be trusted not to be "perverted" with others if they don't keep an eye on him. Naru and Motoko both continue to insist that beating him up on a regular basis was for his own good, out of fear of him acting inappropriate towards others. They're quickly called out by Seta and Tsuruko for their unfounded paranoia. Motoko eventually realizes her excuses are bullshit. Naru doesn't.
  • Parental Abandonment: Naru feels this way toward her parents, though they didn't really abandon her at all. Played straight in the final chapter with both parents as they were finally fed up with Naru's selfish bratty behavior. When she tries to call out this trope to them, they remind her that she abandoned them first; she wanted them out of her life, and she got what she wanted. When Naru tried to play it off as "she was just upset at the time and didn't mean it", it was not accepted.
  • Parents as People: While Keitaro's parents did kick him out, they only did so because of his obsession with his Childhood Marriage Promise. They were not going to let him live off the street, instead trying to get him to work for Shinsuke. Later on, they all apologize to each other and promise to start over.
  • Parental Betrayal:
    • Marumi suffers from Hina breaking her promise of allowing the former to inherit the inn.
    • Naru feel this way toward her parents; of course it’s just her being unreasonable and self-centered.
    • In a similar case to Naru, Sarah also believes Seta's betrayed her when he puts her in St. Clavius.
  • Parental Neglect:
    • Naru incorrectly feels that her parents favor Mei more and neglect her. However, Naru is just a selfish brat who can't stand anybody else having the attention.
    • Seta frequently dumping Sarah on Keitaro comes back to bite him when he finally discovers how she's been warped by Naru and Motoko. By the time he removes her from the Hinata Inn, he's unable to reign in her behavior and has enrolled in St. Clavius. The headmistress even calls him out on his neglectful parenting and how he's now making Sarah their problem.
  • Parental Substitute: Sosuke and Isana have shown love and care for Ranma, especially in comparison to how Genma and Nodoka treated him.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Hina's last conversation with her daughter Yoko before she died was an argument.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil:
    • Hikaru chokes out Su after she destroys the Kuromitsu Inn and injures Shakiko with her inventions, and after that the uninjured Kuromitsu guests and employees call Su a monster and a terrorist.
    • Kitsune secretly gives Motoko's novels to Tsuruko, which she then uses on her during her trial.
    • Chizuka has Naru arrested and later expelled from Toudai after she punched her husband for no good reason and later blames them for giving her the wrong signals.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Shinsuke taking in people with troubles like Keitaro, Ranma, and Tamaki.
    • Mitsune running to protect some children from Suu's machine despite the risks.
    • Isana defending Ranma from Genma, Soun, and Nodoka and even breaking Nodoka arm in a fight.
    • Nagisa defending her friend Tamaki from her brother harassing her.
  • Played for Drama: All of the comedic abuse Keitaro recieved in Love Hina. Everything that was Played for Laughs in canon is now deadly serious.
  • Playing the Family Card: When Naru comes to crawl back to the family she abandoned, she tries to convince them to take her back by invoking family ties. Her family don't fall for it, as she not only cut ties with them, Naru also made several hurtful remarks towards them, despite them trying to help her before.
  • Plot Parallel: Many of the other residents at Keitaro's new place are going through similar situations. For instance, Ranma is staying there after deciding to break all ties with his parents and the Tendos.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Yoko for Hina's plans involving the girls and Keitaro.
  • The Pollyanna:
    • Mutsumi, who despite everything believes that she can bring Keitaro and Naru back together.
    • Subverted with Keitaro, as all the miserable things that have been happening has really affected him. He was just hiding most of his issues.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • Keitaro becomes very good about averting this by talking to others. A hard lesson he had learned due to his own bad experiences in the past involving his cousin Yoshinari, whom he had caused to get hospitalized for interfering in something he shouldn't have. It also helps that the people he talks to actually listen to him unlike the the Hinata tenants.
    • Conversely, Hina's tendency to leave others in the dark and only let them know what she wants them to know causes her plans to keep imploding, as they find out the truth from other sources and stop trusting her.
  • Post-Kiss Catatonia: Downplayed as Keitaro is stunned a bit when Nagisa kisses him.
  • Posthumous Character: Takeru, Yoko, and Keisuke. Takeru's wrongful death becomes a secondary plot point later on in the story.
  • Plucky Girl: Su is a subversion of this. She handles bad things like explosions that happen around her without a problem, but that's only because she's the one causing them, and she immediately loses that bravery after her actions land her in serious hot water.
  • Pretty Freeloader: Kitsune has to deal with the consequences of this after Keitaro's Aunt Marumi takes over and reconverts the place to an Inn, and evicts all the tenants. Eventually, Kitsune actually gets better due to this, making her take a long look at herself.
  • Properly Paranoid: Keitaro tells Shinobu he can't be around her anymore, because whenever they're in the same room the other girls will immediately pounce on him for acting "perverted" towards her. After Keitaro leaves Shinobu in a nearby park, she grows quietly enraged when the other Hinata girls immediately show up to bother her with accusations and questions about what Keitaro did to her.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: Examined and deconstructed. In the original story, the Hinata Inn girls frequently got away with abusing Keitaro because it was Played for Laughs. Granny Hina and Mutsumi were seen as heroic because they conspired to unite Keitaro and Naru as lovers. Here, their mindset is gradually picked apart as those outside the inn call out their behavior as harmful and downright toxic towards Keitaro and each other. The main villains such as Naru, Motoko, Su, Sarah, Mutsumi, and Granny Hina all believe that they are right and anyone who disagrees with them is morally wrong. Motoko is the only one who understand her behavior was wrong before she passes the point of no return, while all of the others destroy their lives and are left with nothing to show for it because they refused to consider a point of view beyond their own.
    • Granny Hina sees herself as a loving Parental Substitute to a group of unhappy young girls who needed a place to live. In truth, she's a coddling Pushover Parent desperately trying to atone for having turned away her eldest daughter before she died, and willing to sacrifice her own grandson if it means helping Naru the way she should've helped Yoko.
    • Mutsumi especially refuses to recognize that Keitaro and Naru's relationship wasn't good simply because she views being a Love Martyr and Shipper on Deck as a noble thing. She instead comes across as a delusional idiot willing to ignore all boundaries if it means uniting two people who can't stand each other, just to make herself feel like a good person. The moment she meets Chigusa and Kagura, she quickly latches onto them because they feed into her delusions.
  • The Psycho Rangers: Inverted and Downplayed with the people Keitaro met after leaving the Hinata Inn, one example is Ritsuko to Su.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild:
    • Suu has absolutely no regard for the consequences of her actions when using her mechanizations to "have fun". She unleashes her mecha-tamas upon the Kuromitsu Inn guests, thinking in her warped way that they would be "cheered up" since it (in her mind) worked with Keitaro. She laughs in wild abandon as she gets people caught and injured in the explosions, but then cries in pain when Kitsune slaps her hard to stop her mayhem.
    • People who have witnessed Naru's violent behavior view her as this.
  • Punch Catch:
    • Seta's Big Damn Heroes moment in chapter 4 has him pull this on Naru, after she attempts to punch Keitaro after he tells the Hinata girls that he wants nothing to do with them.
    • Later on, Keitaro himself pulls this on Naru when she once again tries to punch him when he refuses to return to the inn.
  • Pushover Parents:
    • Seta views himself as this after Marumi and a school principal point out how undisciplined and out of control Sarah is. He is forced to take measures to rectify this by enrolling her in a strict boarding academy.
    • Keitaro's family view Hina as this towards the Hinata Inn tenants, calling out how she has more concern for them rather than her own family which she insists is not true.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Keitaro shows how badly his efforts to get into Tokyo U. have affected him in the long run.
  • Quirky Household: Deconstructed with the Hinata girls. Their 'quirky traits' are actually serious psychological problems, and their behavior is that of Spoiled Brats who can't tell when they're wrong.
  • Rage Against the Mentor:
    • Naru toward Seta when he tells her that he is disappointed in her for using the skills he taught her to bully others. Of course, it's just Naru refusing to admit to any wrong doing.
    • Keitaro has a valid example when Seta reveals that he was using him to get closer to Haruka.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Shinobu finally hits hers after Naru and the others follow her to a nearby park, arriving just after Keitaro left. Having realized he's right to be Properly Paranoid about the way things are, when she returns to the inn Shinobu snaps and declares how much she hates the girls for how they treat Keitaro and how they treat her, as well as her own enabling of the situation. She moves out the following day to live with her aunt, just as Marumi evicts everyone.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The Hinata girls are a deconstructed version, as a bunch of unhappy girls who use the inn as an escape from their problems and as a result their negative qualities intensified. They then banded together thanks to Keitaro acting as a lightning rod for their worst attributes.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Motoko, Tsuruko, and Nagisa.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • Shakiko and Shinsuke. Unlike Granny Hina, both take their manager jobs very seriously, and look out for the welfare of their tenants.
    • The Prime Minister shows himself to be one when it becomes clear he can't allow Suu to transfer back to Mol-Mol.
    • The Tokyo University school board are willing to give Naru a chance to defend her actions for assaulting a man (her career advisor in fact), but ultimately rule against her when she resorts to victim blaming.
    • Tokyo University President Shimata steadfastly refuses to overturn Naru's expulsion, stating it would set a bad precedent.
    • Lamba refuses to listen to Amalla's insistence that Suu's actions were Keitaro's fault and instead lists her own actions that paint her in a bad light, before stating that he can not and will not try to get Suu transferred back to Mol-Mol.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Nagisa toward Keitaro after he agrees to be her disciple.
  • "The Reason I Suck" Speech: Keitaro gives this to himself when he tries to make amends with his Aunt Marumi and cousin, Yoshinari, saying how wrong and foolish he was to not take their advice seriously in the past.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: This fic has more than its fair share of these.
    • Keitaro gives this to each of the Hinata girls, including Shinobu, when they all confront him demanding why he left the way he did.
    • Keitaro's parents give this to each of the Hinata girls as well, angered at how they treated their son. Nanami does it beautifully against Naru, saying she's nothing more than a self-centered abusive brat. Even better was that Naru was the one who walked right into it when she tried to unsuccessfully give one herself to Nanami, but her pride wouldn’t let her have Nanami think Naru isn’t worth anything.
    • Kanako gives out several of these: one to Suu after overhearing her plan to use a machine of hers to forcefully bring Keitaro back, complete with telling Suu that despite being a mechanical genius, she's still a stupid idiot for her inability/refusal to understand that Keitaro left because of her and the tenants' selfishness, and one to Motoko, claiming the reason why she went back to her mindset that Keitaro is a "vile perverted male" is because she believes Naru would never lead her wrong.
    • Granny Hina's shocked when she starts getting these from Keitaro after he's told the truth behind the basis of the childhood promise.
    • Marumi gives this to all the Hinata Inn residents after she takes over, calling them out as nothing more than spoiled brats living there to escape their problems and responsibilities. She kicks them all out, saying a dose of reality will fix them right up.
    • Marumi also calls out Hina's plan of hooking up Keitaro and Naru as pretty underhanded, seeing the old woman as a manipulative bitch who only cares what she supposedly wanted for her grandson.
    • Shinobu of all people gives this to all the residents of the Hinata Inn after realizing how bratty and self-righteous they all are.
    • Keitaro gives this to Mutsumi after getting fed up with her attempts to try and get him and Naru back together, outright telling her she's not doing anyone any favors as it is just plain annoying.
    • Marumi gives this to Seta, calling him a bad parent due to how much of a brat Sarah is.
    • Naru unsuccessfully tries to give this to Kitsune, saying that no matter how much she tries to change, she'll always be the same irresponsible drunk she knows her for. This results in Kitsune giving Naru a slap followed by her calling out Naru's hypocrisy, saying she's the last person to be telling her that.
    • Shakiko gives this to Hina after Suu destroys her inn and injures her from her "playtime". She is disgusted that despite all that happened, Hina continues to make excuses for Naru and Suu's actions.
    • After the aftermath of the Kuromitsu Inn's destruction results in Suu's arrest, Kitsune gives this to Suu, saying she's nothing but an impulsive brat with no regards for anyone's well being and completely clueless about how serious her actions are.
    • Nagisa gives this to Motoko, who continues to blame all her misfortunes on Keitaro (to make it better, this was AFTER she was ordered to make amends for all she did to him).
    • Saori gives one to Naru after what she said to her and Mei, saying that Naru is a ungrateful despicable brat.
    • Marumi gives another one to Hina when she gives her nonsense reasons for what she did.
    • Motoko gives Naru one upon learning that she is associating with Chisato and Kagura, and that, even after all that's happened, she still refuses to change.
    • Keitaro and Nagisa give this to Mutsumi after escaping from the kidnapping scheme. They are greatly annoyed how Mutsumi is still stupidly bent on trying to make Keitaro and Naru get back together. When the scheme falls and thugs were summoned to beat down on Keitaro, Nagasaki, and Yoshinori, Kagura and Chisato give this to Mutsumi as they find her idiotic naïveté incredibly annoying, saying they could never seriously be friends with someone as stupid as her.
    • Saori gives this to Naru when the latter had the gall to come home and expect to be welcomed back despite the horrible things she said to her and her step-family (all while still thinking she did nothing wrong). She correctly calls out Naru is only there because Hina finally cut her off, then tells Naru to lie in the bed she's made before sending her away.
    • Finally, Keitaro, Shinobu, Mitsune, and Motoko give this to Naru when she shamelessly requested she and Keitaro get back together again despite everything she's done, and worse- she's still unapologetic about it. They tell her the only reason she's even suggesting the idea was out of convenience for herself.
  • Redemption Rejection: The majority of the Hinata girls go through this, especially Naru.
  • Reformed, but Rejected:
    • Inverted as Keitaro's attempts to change is positively accepted. In general the main theme of the fic is that people who legitimely reform can have a second chance, as long as they hadn't squandered people's goodwill.
    • Played straight in a sense with Hina in the final chapter as she finally cuts off Naru after realizing once and for all how irredeemable she is. It was too little too late as her own family have decided to cut her off from their lives.
    • Also played straight in the final chapter with Mutsumi after she is arrested with Naru and Chisato for her involvement with Keitaro's kidnapping. She finally realizes all her efforts for Naru had been nothing but a lost cause and admits she should have cut ties with her a long time ago to have avoided all this trouble. Mutsumi was forced to accept that despite this, her relationships with her friends have all been destroyed beyond repair due to her own foolishness and cannot fault them for not wanting to have anything to do with her.
  • Rejected Apology: Justified. On the rare occasions Naru ever apologizes for anything she's done to Keitaro, it's discarded as it's obvious she doesn't mean them.
  • Replacement Goldfish:
    • Subverted - it appeared that Keitaro would be a friend like Takeru was to Nagisa, but Nagisa fell in love with him.
    • Possibly Keitaro is this for Nagisa since he reminds her of Takeru and vice versa.
  • The Reveal:
    • Hina reveals to Keitaro the truth about the circumstances with his "promise girl", who was actually Mutsumi, and that she switched it around to Naru in an attempt to cheer her up. Keitaro's enraged to hear that his grandmother knew about this the whole time, realizing that she deliberately kept it from him in order to tie him to the Inn.
    • Seta also reveals that he initially hired Keitaro to be his worker so he could have a link to Haruka. Again, the news is not taken well, and Keitaro eventually resigns.
  • Revenge:
    • Hina accuses Marumi of taking the inn away for her "vindictive vendetta".
    • Kagura is finally murdered by Takeru's sister (along with the girl who indirectly egged her in her murder in the first place) in an act of suicidal revenge.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Naru is willing to work with Chisato and Kagura despite knowing the latter's crime.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Kagura goes after Keitaro to get back at Nagisa.
  • Revenge Myopia: Naru attempts to get back at Keitaro for making her life miserable, although she was the one who ruined her own life with her violent tendencies and unreasonable expectations.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: In the final chapter, after Keitaro's friends and the police come to rescue him from Chisato and Kagura's kidnapping plot, Kagura throws Chisato into the police as a distraction to escape arrest. She thought she was in the clear, but then blanches when she noticed Mayako was the one driving her limo, having locked her and a previous co-conspirator responsible for her brother's death in the limo. She then kills them all by driving the limo off a cliff to atone for what happened in the past.
  • Rich Bitch: Kagura, who used her father's riches to hire lawyers who got Takeru's death ruled as accidental.
  • Romanticized Abuse: Averted. All abusive actions are taken seriously and are signs that the relationship is toxic and needs to end.
  • Royal Brat: Su, beside being a brat, is also a princess. As such, she frequently uses her royal connections to get her hands on dangerous materials for her inventions. This ends up destroying Molmol's credibility as a nation when it's discovered Su had a stockpile of nuclear reactors in her room at the inn.
  • Safe, Sane, and Consensual: Naru and Motoko always think that women are forced into activities with men, particularly sexual acts.
  • Sanity Slippage: Naru and Mutsumi become more unhinged whenever they deal with something that contradicts them. Around the end they team up with the vile Kagura and Chisato, and Naru sinks to her lowest depths. Mutsumi eventually recovers her sanity, but gets an assload of guilt and depression in exchange.
  • Satellite Character: Sarah is shown to be this overall to the Hinata girls and her father. After Seta stops letting her stay at the inn upon realizing the effect Naru and Motoko's enabling has had on her, Sarah only remains relevant to her father's plotline. After Sarah's enrolled into St. Clavius, she's convinced Naru and the others will "rescue" her, yet all throughout the story following Sarah's departure from the inn, not once do any of the girls ever mention her or wonder how she is. By the final chapter, Sarah is left thoroughly broken when she realizes she was never that important to Naru and everyone else and now she's managed to drive away the one person that truly did care about her well being.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Why Kagura got away with murdering Takeru. A rich daddy and influential lawyers ensured she wouldn't even get so much as a slap on the wrist.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Kagura's wealth helped her get away with murdering Takeru.
  • The Scapegoat:
    • Once she learns that Keitaro is friends with Nagisa, Granny Hina immediately starts blaming her for her grandson's 'insolence'.
    • Naru and Motoko blame Keitaro for all the consequences stemming from their own actions.
    • Mutsumi refuses to believe Keitaro has changed of his own accord and believes that Nagisa and Yoshinari are "brainwashing him". This, of course, does not win her any points with Keitaro.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!:
    • Keitaro has had enough of the abuse he was living through and finally does something about it. This kicks off the plot of the story.
    • Shinobu soon joins up as she also has had enough of the Hinata Inn and its residents. She goes on to live peacefully with her aunt.
    • Mitsune, formerly Kitsune is the next to leave, for similar reasons.
  • Second Love: The story is dropping major hints that Nagisa will become this for Keitaro.
  • Seen It All: Implied with Marumi as she wasn't surprised at all at seeing Tama, a flying turtle, and in fact finds him cute.
  • Selective Obliviousness:
    • Mutsumi, oh. So. Much. Even Naru and Keitaro telling her at the same time that they can't stand each other won't convince her that they don't love each other.
    • Naru blatantly ignores any evidence that Keitaro isn't behind her various woes. Perhaps the most obvious being her insistence Keitaro teamed up with her previous advisor's wife to get her expelled because she saw him talking to her.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy:
    • Sarah resents Keitaro spending time with her father Seta because she thinks he's turning him against her. Seta starts growing stricter with her after witnessing firsthand how nasty and vindictive she is to his employee and he eventually follows on her words of cutting him out of her life.
    • When she first learns how badly Keitaro was treated during his time at the Inn, Hina privately frets that the girls' abuse may mean that Keitaro will despise her. In fact, he does lose respect for her — when she chooses to keep excusing their bad behavior rather than laying down the law, and tries to manipulate him into taking over again.
    • Granny Hina also fears that if Kanako gets her hands on the Hinata Inn, she'll undo all the changes she made. Her attempts to avert this by manipulating others only turn them against her, and in the end the inn has been changed, but by Marumi.
  • Self-Inflicted Hell: All the problems that the Hinata girls suffer are the results of their own actions.
  • Serial Escalation: It just starts revolving around the Hinata girls and Keitaro, but as the story continues things get more intense.
  • Sexy Mentor: Nagisa, described as having a voluptuous body, later gains the mentor part when she begins to train Keitaro.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: When Sarah asks if Keitaro and Nagisa are dating, he replied they are not and Nagisa says they were just friends (however in her mind she shows she wants to be more than just friends).
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Mutsumi for Keitaro and Naru. Unfortunately, this only pisses them off and she's too oblivious to see that.
    • Same way with Hina also pushing for Keitaro and Naru. Of course, it only ends with the same result as Mutsumi’s plans.
    • Isana toward Nagisa and Keitaro after noticing how close they have become.
    • A rare villainous example is Kagura shipping Nagisa with Keitaro, just to hurt Nagisa by planning to take Keitaro away from her.
  • Ship Sinking:
    • Keitaro with any of the Hinata girls, especially with Naru.
    • This also applies to Keitaro and Kanako.
  • Ship Tease: Plenty has been shown between Nagisa and Keitaro. Chapter 16 is when the ship tease is really getting stronger as Nagisa has shown she has fallen in love with Keitaro. This shipping is so strong that it even appears in Karndragon's other story, An Alternate Keitaro Urashima. Keitaro later on has shown some hints of growing feelings for Nagisa such defending her when Mutsumi was saying the wrong things about her. He also was very happy with that kiss Nagisa gave him and it is implied he might have asked her out before being interrupted. Lastly when Kagura ask him if he and Nagisa were a "item" he said not officially and completely rejected Kagura "charm" for Nagisa.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Motoko to Nagisa and Keitaro getting together. Mutsumi to Keitaro and Nagisa getting together as she views Nagisa “getting in the way of Keitaro and Naru being together”.
  • Shrinking Violet: Shinobu slowly grows out of this during the story.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Isana is a woman with traditional Japanese traits and has proven to be a strong fighter. Her daughter Nagisa inherited this from her.
  • Single Tear: Nagisa cries this way when she tells Keitaro that Takeru died from his injuries.
  • Skewed Priorities: Hina is more focused on helping the girls instead of helping her family, like Keitaro when he was suffering abuse from said tenants.
  • Slut-Shaming: Naru repeatedly blasts Kitsune as someone who used to manipulate men with her body to get out of doing work. Even as she makes a conscious effort to overcome her past vices, Kitsune only ever gets unwarranted scorn and mockery from her supposed best friend.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: After Naru gets dumped by Keitaro, she tells him that there were tons of guys she could've gone out with instead of him and he should've been lucky to have a girlfriend like her.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Keitaro after leaving his old self.
  • The So-Called Coward: Keitaro has evolved into this as the Hinata girls (Naru and Motoko in particular) still consider him a cowardly pervert, despite the bravery he's shown when facing them.
  • So Proud of You: Kyoshiro toward Keitaro for getting into Tokyo U.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • Granny Hina and Mutsumi regard Nagisa as this.
    • Similarly, most of the Hinata Girls see Keitaro as a spanner responsible for them having to face consequences for their actions. (He does function as a spanner, primarily due to actually communicating with others and letting them know what's going on).
  • Spoiled Brat:
    • Naru, oh so much, as she refuses to see that most of her problems are the result of her own doing.
    • Sarah and Suu also qualify, as both are deeply immature. Sarah especially might be the worst of the two, as she's openly violent and horrible towards anyone who tries to tell her to behave.
    • In fact any of the Hinata girls can count.
  • Stalker with a Crush: What Seta is revealed to be after Sarah obliviously tells Haruka and Marumi about how often he'll ask Keitaro about what Haruka's doing. Keitaro quits working as his assistant after Seta confesses he was using Keitaro to get closer to Haruka.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Played with. When Naru is called forth by the board of Tokyo University after she unknowingly assaults her faculty advisor, she tries to pass off her crime as a reflex brought on by all the "perversion" she had to deal with from Keitaro. She's then asked why she never called the police if Keitaro was going around sexually harassing her and the girls at the Hinata Inn. Naru gets flustered, claiming she didn't think that was necessary. It only goes to show, in any other situation, calling the police would've been the easiest and correct way to handle things if Keitaro actually was the sexual deviant Naru believes he is.
  • Stupid Sacrifice: Mutsumi believes that she must be a Love Martyr to get her beloved Keitaro together with his promise girl Naru so they can be happy. In reality, Keitaro has very good reasons to not like Naru (e.g. she's violently abusive to him), and might have actually been interested in Mutsumi had she not been so dead set on getting him back into a toxic relationship. When Mutsumi finally realized that she did this, she doesn't take it well.
  • Stone Wall: Keitaro used to be this. He didn't attack anyone, but he could take whatever abuse others could dish out without injury.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Keitaro looks like a regular (and somewhat wimpy) guy, but can take sword strikes and missiles without getting injured, and he's training to be able to dish it out as well.
  • Stupid Good: Mutsumi to a T, with more emphasis on the 'stupid' and less on the 'good'. She honestly believes she's doing Keitaro a favor by trying to get him back together with Naru, even dealing with a pair of unscrupulous girls, Kagura and Chisato, completely oblivious that they're using her. Haruka (who knows the two and their crimes) even calls Mutsumi out on trusting two people she just met so completely. Despite that, Mutsumi foolishly sides with Chisato and Kagura, thinking that they may have "changed" despite only just meeting them. This mindset costs her dearly in the end.
  • Suicidal Pacifism: Keitaro suffered this before leaving the inn.
  • Sunk Cost Fallacy:
    • Keitaro went through a lot of trouble trying to fulfill his Childhood Marriage Promise. By the time the story rolls around, he's decided it's not worth it and given up on it.
    • Mutsumi as well. She does a lot of downright stupid acts because she was in an extreme Love Martyr mindset, and still kept trying to set up Naru and Keitaro at a great personal cost. It takes until the final episode for her to let it sink in that it was All for Nothing.
  • Super-Toughness:
    • Keitaro has easily withstood MISSILES without suffering serious injuries.
    • Shakiko was knocked out from Su's mecha-Tama rampage, but she quickly comes to afterwards.
  • Talk to the Fist: Kanako angrily punches out Mutsumi for slapping Keitaro and ranting about how he's a horrible person just because he refuses to go along with her wishes. She even has the gall to be surprised she got punched despite what she did earlier.
  • Taking You with Me: Mayako's ultimate revenge plan against Chisato and Kagura ends in this, trapping the two in one of Kagura's limousines and driving it off of a cliff.
  • Tamer and Chaster: Unlike canon, the story features almost zero fanservice with the hottest action being a chaste kiss.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: With Nagisa and Keitaro as he has taken up being her student. A unique case as Nagisa the mentor is younger than her disciple and it is her who develops feeling for her protegee in this relationship first.
  • Team Mom: Hina act as this way toward the tenants, albeit a spoiling mom.
  • Teens Are Monsters:
    • Naru and Motoko, particularly in chapter 13 where they attack Shinobu just because they don't like what she said.
    • Chisato and Kagura as well with the latter killing Takeru without regret.
  • That Man Is Dead: Kitsune asks Haruka and Shinobu to call her Mitsune (her given name) from now on instead of her nickname, a sign she no longer considers herself The Trickster.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After having enough, Keitaro decides if the Hinata girls continue to give him trouble he will fight back, like in chapter 14 when Naru tries to punch him - with no effort he turns around quickly, catches her fist, and mocks her attempt.
  • The Unfettered: Hina has show she is willing to go great lengths to accomplish her goals, including allowing Keitaro to be mind controlled.
  • They Just Dont Get It: Invoked. Whenever a character is called out on their rotten behavior, they'll likely cry that others "don't understand."
    • This is Naru's most typical defense when called out on her abusive behavior towards Keitaro. She'll vainly try to claim she was justified in beating him up because of his "perversions," but when this is quickly and rationally picked apart by the person she's talking to Naru cries that the other party "Doesn't understand." When she's then asked to explain what is so hard to understand, she blanks and claims it wouldn't be worth explaining because it'd be lost on them. This is most prominent when Seta admonishes Naru for letting Sarah get away with misbehaving.
    • Mutsumi spends the entire story operating on this mindset regarding Keitaro and Naru's relationship when others tell her they won't be getting back together. Her delusional view of the situation makes her come across as patronizing to others, as she's certain they fail to understand how deeply Keitaro and Naru still love each other. Likewise, when she falls in with Chisato and Kagura, she adamantly believes they're good people and finds it disappointing that everyone else believes they're heartless monsters until the very end of the story when they throw Mutsumi to the wolves.
  • Third Line, Some Waiting: The main plot revolves around Keitaro leaving behind the Hinata inn, a second plotline focuses on Ranma leaving his old life, and some minor characters like Ritsuko and Tamaki moving on with their lives.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Keitaro and Ranma get this after being used for so long, and a minor character Tamaki as well.
  • Title Drop: The final paragraph of the fic states that it was for his own sake Keitaro got out of the bad situation he was in to have a better life.
  • Token Good Teammate: At the beginning of the story, Shinobu was the only arguably innocent member of the Hinata girls even if she was an Accomplice by Inaction. Among the rest of the tenants, she was the only one living in the inn who had a legitimate reason for being there as her divorced parents were using her as something to fight over in their separation. Compared to the rest of the girls who just wanted a place to not work on themselves, Shinobu only stayed at the Hinata Inn because she genuinely had no one else to rely on until her Aunt Yukina offered her a home.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Keitaro is now fighting back against anyone who causes trouble and taking sword and further Martial Arts training.
    • Shinobu has become more assertive, openly talking back to the other girls and calling them out on their bullshit.
    • Nyamo is training under Ranma and willing to fight others.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Nagisa hasn't been as outgoing and happy ever since her friend, Takeru passed away. At least until she meets up with Keitaro, who becomes her close friend and possibly boyfriend.
  • Took a Level in Cynic:
  • Took a Level in Dumbass: Naru, Su, and Mutsumi are the biggest instigators, unable to comprehend that their horrible behavioral patterns are the causes of their problems.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: Mutsumi in the later end of the story become more idealistic, although it is deconstructed as she comes off as delusional where she trusts Kagura and Chisato despite knowing their background.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: The Hinata girls become much worse as they start to turn against each other after Keitaro bugs out.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Any of the Hinata girls that decide to change for the better.
  • Toxic Friend Influence:
    • Seta sees the Hinata Inn girls as this to his daughter once it's revealed that they constantly interfered with Keitaro trying to discipline her, to the point where she thinks anyone trying to do so is in the wrong. He removes her from the inn as soon as he finds out.
    • Kagura and Chisato to Mutsumi, who is too oblivious to see that. Ironic as she views Keitaro's new friends as this to him just because he had enough of the misery he suffered at the Hinata Inn.
    • Subverted with Naru and Motoko. Naru obviously brought out the worst in Motoko, as evident by a flashback where she watched Naru pummel Keitaro through the roof for helping Shinobu. Having seen firsthand what happened before Naru arrived, Motoko briefly argued that Keitaro genuinely was helping Shinobu. Naru ignored Motoko and told her not to trust Keitaro before asking if Motoko's senses as a warrior have dulled. Motoko in the present realizes she can't blame Naru for her own actions, as she chose to trust her no matter what her conscience told her.
  • Trauma Button: Invoked in-universe. When brought to the board of Tokyo University after assaulting her faculty advisor, Naru desperately claims she punched the man on impulse after putting up with Keitaro's "perversions" for so long. She defends her actions as happening on reflex from being remind of his supposed attempts to molest her and the Hinata Inn girls. The board doesn't buy it for a second, especially after they ask why Naru never called the police to have Keitaro arrested if he was as big a deviant as she's saying.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior:
    • Su uses her genius intellect and mechanical skills to cause all sorts of trouble throughout the story.
    • As a result of following Naru and Motoko's example, Sarah beats up anyone who tries to stop her from doing as she pleases. This gets her thrown out of elementary school when she attacks two kids and her teacher, and lands her in St. Clavius Academy.
  • True Companions: The new friends Keitaro made at his new residence as well as reconnecting with his family (and Shinobu) are this, as opposed to his stay at the Hinata Inn.
  • Trapped by Gambling Debts: What happen to Mitsune's family in her background story.
  • Troubled, but Cute: Keitaro and Ranma in the sense that they have sympathetic issues like being abused or manipulated.
  • Tsundere: Most of Motoko's hatred toward Keitaro is due to her romantic frustrations toward him. In chapter 24, she finally admits it.
  • The Unapologetic: With the exceptions of Shinobu and Kitsune and eventually Motoko, all the Hinata Inn residents including Hina herself all believe that everything they do is perfectly justified. It's not until the very end that Mutsumi and Hina realize they put their faith in the wrong person, but by that point, there's no way they could ever make amends with the ones they hurt so they leave.
  • Undying Loyalty:
    • This would have been a virtue for Mutsumi. Too bad it's towards the wrong people.
    • Keitaro to Nagisa, much to Kagura's anger and pride.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Zig-Zagged, as being called ungrateful is a bit of a Running Gag in the story. Played straight with the Hinata Girls with Keitaro and subverted with Shinobu, who Naru and Motoko define as ungrateful for all the time they were helping her. The subversion is that "helping" her was really bullying. Naru accuses Chizuka of being ungrateful when she saves her. Another subversion is that Naru actually punched out Chizuka's husband when he was just asking her to play a new fighting game at a arcade. Played straight in chapter 23 with Naru's attitude toward her family who tried to reason with her.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Keitaro didn't train for very long but has show a lot of potential after leaving behind his old attitude, seen when he was able to detect Naru when she was eavesdropping on his conversation with Seta. Noteworthy as Seta, a Martial Art Master, didn't realize she was there until Keitaro pointed it out. Keitaro also blocks Naru's punch and casually defeats Motoko in a sword fight despite the latter having more experience. One major feat is that Keitaro was able to hold his own against Nagisa even though he never had been trained to use a sword, and Nagisa has been training since she was little. He also has great learning speed as he was able to perform the counters to Motoko in a few day.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Hikaru, Shakiko's granddaughter, angrily tries to choke Suu to death for destroying the Kuromitsu Inn and injuring her grandmother. Police and employees are forced to physically separate her from Suu.
  • Using You All Along: Keitaro views Hina and Mutsumi this way over their plan to hook up him with Naru.
  • Villain of Another Story: Kagura and Chisato before they met up with Mutsumi for their plan for Nagisa and Yoshinari respectfully.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Kagura starts to seek out Keitaro after finding out who he is and how close he's gotten to Nagisa.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Kagura in the final chapter when her plan to torment Nagisa falls apart, and when the authorities arrive to arrest her and her co-conspirators. She falls into this further when Kagura thought she escaped jail, but was captured instead by Mayako, who also captured her friend Akemi, the ones responsible for her little brother's death. Mayako also reveals Kagura's father had been arrested for his illegal actions, so she can no longer rely on him to bail her out this time. Kagura and Akemi immediately began trying to pin the blame on the other for Takeru's death, but it fell on deaf ears. When they realize Mayako was going to commit Murder-Suicide on them, Kagura and Akemi pathetically and fearfully begged for forgiveness. Again this fell on deaf ears as Mayako drives them off a cliff.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Naru is a unique case as she is violently protective of others from her then boyfriend Keitaro. Of course said people don't really need it and it ultimately gets her arrested.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Keitaro constantly tells Mutsumi to quit trying to help get him and Naru back together. Even Naru doesn't appreciate what Mutsumi's trying to do.
  • Unwitting Pawn:
    • Mutsumi is this in SPADES to Kagura and Chisato, obliviously going along with their schemes after being lead to believe it would help get Naru and Keitaro back together.
    • Keitaro was this to Hina before leaving the inn.
  • Wanton Cruelty to the Common Comma: The author has received criticisms for his grammar.
  • Warrior Therapist: Nagisa, of a sort. She helps Keitaro out with his growth in Martial Arts training and overcoming his issues.
  • Warts and All: How Keitaro thinks Nagisa views him. He explains that Nagisa accepted him despite his terrible faults. In turn, he helps Nagisa become more happy and outgoing since the loss of her best friend Takeru.
  • Weapon of Mass Destruction: Su's Mecha Tamas have this potential. Pity she doesn't have anything like the responsibility to use them correctly.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Mutsumi goes to any lengths to make Keitaro happy by hooking him up with Naru, rejecting any evidence that Keitaro now hates Naru and any relationship between them would be horribly abusive.
  • We Were Your Team: While not a team, the Hinata girls were kept together by Keitaro, but since he left, they started to turn on each other.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Chapter 13 had Hina reveal to Keitaro the true identity of his promise girl, and later on, after Shinobu declares that she hated all of the other tenants, Motoko slaps her and Naru tries to beat her to a pulp.
    • Chapter 22: Su unleashing her Mecha Tamas on the Kuromitsu inn became an international incident.
    • Chapter 23: Japan Prime Minister reveal that Su had four nuclear reactors and other illegal devices and they from the Momol Royal Palace.
    • Chapter 26: Keitaro near the end of the chapter became kidnapped by Naru, Mutsumi, Chisato, and Kagura.
  • Wham Line: In chapter 13 during the interaction between Hina and Keitaro:
Keitaro: I understand that you, my own grandmother, you really are a cruel person.
    • In chapter 23, Amalla spoke to the Japanese prime minister and he reveals something shocking:
Matzusaki: They actually found a few nuclear reactors in her room... They were delivered from the Royal Palace of Molmol.
  • What You Are in the Dark:
    • Mitsune proves she's redeemed herself twice over when she secretly tries to warn Keitaro about Su's brainwashing device, and when she owns up to her own awful behavior as she tells Shakiko the truth about what happened at the Hinata Inn.
    • Chisato believes that Kagura's "charm" will get Keitaro to be on their side, unaware that Keitaro would completely reject Kagura. Kagura finds out and is utterly pissed that Keitaro would do that for Nagisa.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Keitaro chews out Mutsumi for all the times she sold him out to please Naru while still going on about how he "shouldn't abandon Naru".
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The final chapter has a one-month Time Skip detailing several characters' fates.
    • Since she burnt all her bridges so thoroughly, Naru is forced to turn to some extended family members for help and ultimately moves to America to start over.
    • Mutsumi moves back home with her family in Okinawa, forced to live with the guilt of what she'd done.
    • Suu is stripped of her royal title and continues to be serving time in prison, though her full sentence isn't revealed.
    • Sarah is disowned by Seta and left to the care of the St. Clavius Academy, forced to live with the fact that she destroyed her relationship with her adopted father simply because she didn't get her way.
  • Why Would Anyone Take Him Back?: In-universe example.
    • After Naru rants about Keitaro being a "useless pervert" who only wanted her body, Keitaro asks why she wants him back as the inn's manager if he really is as useless and perverted as she says.
    • Mutsumi still clings to her belief Keitaro needs to be there for Naru, despite others being appalled at how incapable she is of realizing Naru's a horrible abuser who doesn't even want him back. None of them can understand why she's so willfully in denial of the situation. In this case, it's more like "Why Would Mutsumi Want Keitaro To Take Naru Back?"
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Mutsumi is a deconstruction as she come off as too too trusting of the wrong people.
  • Willfully Weak: Keitaro doesn't have it in him to fight back, but after cutting all ties with the girls he has shown strength he didn't before, like blocking Naru's punch with ease despite his back being turned when she tried to hit him. He also easily bested Motoko when she tried to attack him with a bokken. This story pretty much shown that this only the reason why Naru and the others could hurt Keitaro so easily.
  • With Friends Like These...: The Hinata Girls are genuinely awful to each other, just not to the same degree they are towards Keitaro. Once he leaves, they gradually turn on each other and their "friendship" dissolves. Naru especially is horrible towards Shinobu and Kitsune, accusing the former of being "ungrateful" when she has enough of their bullying to the point she was going to beat her up, and constantly calling the latter a manipulative, slutty drunk (and she still tries to say Kitsune is her "best friend"). By the end of the story, Motoko, Shinobu, and Mitsune have all genuinely repaired their friendship with each other and Keitaro once they atone for their flaws and cut Naru out for good.
  • With Us or Against Us: The Hinata Girls tend to have this problem. Either you go along with exactly what they want, or there's something wrong with you.
  • Woman Behind the Woman: Hina to Mutsumi.
  • Woman Scorned: Part of Naru's hatred against Keitaro is for him having the nerve to dump her, after he supposedly hounded her for years. At the beginning of the fic, part of her does feel hurt that he's dumping her and tries to prove him wrong. It's just that her complete inability to ever admit any wrongdoing on her end manages to sour whatever sort of genuine love she might've had for Keitaro, if she ever had any love at all. It then becomes about getting revenge on him for "ruining her life."
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • Naru and Motoko show they are willing to attack Shinobu if she says or does something they don't agree with.
    • This sentiment is shared with Kagura and Chisato.
  • Wretched Hive: What the Hinata Inn is firmly established to be while Hina ran the place. She viewed it as a place for unhappy girls to have a safe environment to leave their problems behind. When in truth it was a breeding ground for toxic behavior as Naru and the other tenants all acted like their worst selves with no one willing to reign them in and no reason to work on their issues.
  • Xenafication: Downplayed with Nyamo and Shinobu as they are more willing to stand up for themselves and others.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Nagisa, who takes after her mother, Isana.
  • You Are a Credit to Your Race: Motoko say something along these lines to her father when she ranting that men are terrible.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are:
    • When listening to her rant about what a horrible person she is, Keitaro earnestly tells Ritsuko that despite anything she might have done, he knows she's a good person.
    • Nagisa to Keitaro as she often tells him he is a nice person and that he has potential to get better.
  • You Are What You Hate: Considering Motoko wrote out explicit sexual fantasies (novels, even) about Keitaro, a real life person whom she knows, it goes to show she's a far bigger pervert than he ever was.
  • You Make Me Sick: Keitaro towards Naru and Mutsumi after they, Kagura, and Chisato kidnap him. He calls out the two former inn residents on sinking so low as to help with this kidnapping scheme, and all for incredibly petty reasons.
  • Your Answer to Everything:
    • During one of his many speeches to Motoko, Keitaro points out how she always attacks people who disagree with her, including slapping Shinobu. For all her talk of being a protector, she's nothing more than a spoiled bully.
    • At her disciplinary hearing, Naru is called out because her answer to why she attacks men is always "that pervert Keitaro." She's also shown as being no better than Motoko in regards to attacking people.
  • You're Not My Father:
    • Naru disowns her parents when she deludes herself into thinking that they abandoned her. In turn, her parents chooose to stop dealing with her outright after dealing with her bratty attitude.
    • In the last episode, Sarah screams "You're not my papa anymore!" to her adoptive father Seta during an angry fit. She was blowing off steam because he refused to get her out the strict boarding school he enrolled her in to correct her brattiness and was under the mistaken impression that the Hinata girls would rescue her anytime soon, but Seta took it as proof that he never was fit to raise her in the first place and decided to take her to her word.
  • You Remind Me of X: Keitaro reminds Nagisa of her old friend Takeru.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Shinobu toward Mutsumi when she tries to see Keitaro. She's even willing to stop Chisato and Kagura, both of who are bigger than her.
