Modern-day Pokémon Horizons: The Series AU by Zazie122.

Friede is a pediatrician at the Saint Asagi General Hospital, where he mostly looks after kids with terminal illnesses or those who have to stay in hospital long-term. One day, he gets assigned to be the doctor of Amethio, a teenage boy who has just been diagnosed with a rare terminal illness. Amethio's cynical, cold personality leaves a deep impression on Friede, and he's determined to get through to his patient and make Amethio's final stage of his short life as enjoyable as possible.

However, what Friede doesn't know is that Amethio has many reasons for putting up an impenetrable fortress of walls around his heart that extend far beyond his physical health issues. But Friede is the type of person who has no idea when to give up, so he remains adamant that he will slowly get closer to Amethio — a boy who comes across as extremely sad and isolated, to a very concerning degree.

And, in the process, Friede finds himself becoming more and more attached to Amethio, despite multiple warnings from his superiors that getting too close is a bad idea for everyone involved.

Amethio, meanwhile, keeps trying to push Friede away... but he begins to realise that the man is genuine. And might actually be kind of... enjoyable to spend time with.

This is the story of a doctor falling in love with a lonely, dying boy, and a severely damaged teenager who finally finds someone in the cold, hard universe that doesn't hate him for his mere existence.

NOTE: In this fic, Amethio is Gibeon's son and Spinel's younger brother. Their mother, Gibeon's ex-wife, is an OC. Family dynamics are subject to change to avoid becoming Outdated by Canon. If they ever tell us anything about Amethio's family, that is!

Also, Gibeon went to high school with Lucius, which is almost a separate AU in and of itself but takes place in this universe. Basic tropes relating to that setting are unmarked as spoilers, even though Amethio and the audience don't find out about Gibeon and Lucius's connection until later.

     Friede Valiente
Age: 27
Birthday: 8/23
Family: Father (Deceased; died when Friede was thirteen), Mother (Walked out when Friede was five), The Fiala family — Lucca & Alex (Adoptive parents), Liko (Adoptive sister) and their other relatives

Pediatrician at the Saint Asagi General Hospital. Always tries his best to make his young patients as happy as possible despite their usually bleak situations, but struggles to remain happy himself. Quickly becomes attached to his newest patient Amethio.

Tropes that apply to Friede:

  • The Alcoholic: He went through a period of heavy drinking in his late teens. He refuses to drink now as a result.
  • Alcoholic Parent: His father was a severe alcoholic, and Friede was often ignored by him.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: Swears he sleeps better anywhere but his bedroom, including upright in a chair.
  • The Antinihilist: Tries to be this in order to keep himself able to do his job, but isn't always successful due to being surrounded by so much death.
  • Analogy Backfire: Really bad at analogies, as noted by Amethio.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Forces himself to act like this. He eventually can't keep fooling himself, as Amethio's deteriorating health starts to severely stress him out.
  • Boys Like Creepy Critters: Used to collect bugs. Amethio finds this disgusting.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Many people tell him he doesn't seem like a doctor because of his kind, quirky personality. But he's very smart and knows an awful lot about pediatrics.
  • But I Read a Book About It: He admits that he's fallen victim to this in the past with his previous patients, and tries to be flexible with his way of approaching things, as both people and their health problems are extremely unpredictable.
  • Can't Tie His Tie: Amethio comments that Friede's tie is always loose, and Friede has to admit to Amethio that it's because he can't actually tie it. Amethio isn't impressed.
  • Child Prodigy: He's been extremely knowledgeable about pediatric medicine from a young age, and excelled in biology in school.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Amethio calls him out for his obsession with saving people. Friede, after some self-reflection, ends up admitting to Amethio that he never saw it that way, but Amethio's right, and it stems from Friede's father killing himself when Friede was young, and Friede blaming himself for not being able to help his dad in any way.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Has quite a few admirers amongst the mothers who visit their children that are looked after by him. Amethio is vaguely amused by this.
  • Commitment Issues: Ends up realising he has these, due to his mother leaving when he was very young and his father being Driven to Suicide when he was a teenager. Working in an environment where a lot of his patients die has also done nothing but help him convince himself that everybody will leave him.
  • Cool Bike: Has a cool motorbike. It's bright orange with teal stripes.
  • Cool Shades: Wears these when not at work.
  • Cunning Linguist: Speaks multiple languages. Amethio witnesses him switch to foreign languages a few times with certain patients' families, and is always impressed.
  • The Defroster: Intentionally with Amethio, although he's like this with all of his patients. Amethio just takes a bit more time to melt than the younger kids.
  • Determinator:
    • He won't give up on trying to get closer to Amethio, dammit!
    • Does a lot of his own research on Amethio's illness in a desperate search for some kind of cure (even though he knows it's most likely impossible). Becomes obsessed with contacting experts to see if there's any chance somebody out there can help Amethio — to the point that he gets sick from overworking himself.
  • Ditzy Genius: He's smart, confident and sociable, yet also an airhead. Amethio figures he's Obfuscating Stupidity to some extent, but in reality, Friede really does space out and forget things a lot.
  • Encyclopaedic Knowledge: When it comes to pediatrics, thanks to his intelligence and photographic memory.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: While he would rather not hate people, he soon develops a strong loathing for Gibeon after learning about how he treats Amethio. Eventually eases this opinion somewhat following Gibeon's Jerkass Realization, and is extremely relieved that Gibeon is willing to admit his mistakes and attempting to make amends with his sons.
  • Experienced Protagonist: He's been a pediatrician for quite some time.
  • Flipping the Bird: Does this behind Gibeon's back multiple times. Amethio is aghast and is always terrified that Gibeon will catch Friede doing it and get Friede into trouble.
  • Forgets to Eat: Usually too caught up in his work to remember to eat.
  • Friend to All Children: Sees it as being part of the job description, but it's also his natural personality.
  • Fun Personified: Tries to be this for his patients, who are children, by always being happy-go-lucky and by acting extremely enthusiastic. It doesn't work on Amethio.
  • Genius Ditz: Shows shades of this, as he's often rather ditzy socially and seems to struggle interacting with people. Amethio thinks he invokes this on purpose.
  • Good with Numbers: Very quick at mathematics, which sometimes comes in handy with his job.
  • The Grim Reaper: Spinel makes a comment that Friede's job is essentially this. Friede gets angry at Spinel for being insensitive, but the more he thinks about it, the more Friede realises that Spinel's actually right. After all, Friede is pretty much guiding people towards death, even if he does try and delay it as much as possible.
  • Happily Adopted: While he took many years to adjust to his sudden change in family situation, Friede feels this way about his mentor Lucca and her husband Alex taking him in.
  • Heroic Fatigue: While trying desperately to search for a cure for Amethio's illness, he overworks himself to the point of making himself sick, and has to take off several days of work — which Friede never usually does.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He's good at hiding it, but ultimately, Friede's not very fond of who he is as a person.
  • Hospital Hottie: He's very handsome... at least according to Amethio (and several of the mothers of his other patients).
  • I Thought Everyone Could Do That: Learns a lot about himself and his talents when Amethio frequently has to explain to him that most people are incapable of doing such things.
  • Improbable Age: Realistically, he's too young to be an experienced pediatrician by a few years.
  • Men Can't Keep House: His apartment is always very messy. His excuse is that he doesn't have the time to clean it.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Is very careful to avoid this, following people misinterpreting his closeness with his young patients, particularly Liz. Friede refuses to tell Amethio what happened, either, considering Amethio himself is still young, and Friede is worried it might be too upsetting.
  • Nice Guy: Most people think he's too nice. Amethio feels as though Friede's forcing himself to be a Nice Guy, and Friede ends up admitting that Amethio is right.
  • Note to Self: Says and thinks this a lot. It's his way of actually logging things in his brain that he needs to remember.
  • Older Than They Look: Amethio's surprised when Friede says he's in his late 20s — Amethio thought he was in his early 20s.
  • Papa Wolf: With the kids at the Saint Asagi General Hospital. He'll protect any of his patients from their families if he has to.
  • Parental Abandonment: Friede's mother walked out on him and his father when Friede was little.
  • Parental Neglect: His father was an alcoholic who never paid any attention to Friede and killed himself when Friede was a teenager.
  • Photographic Memory: For the most part it's great for his job. Except he also remembers all the kids that have died under his care, including how and when they died.
  • Quirky Doctor: Does not fit any doctor stereotypes, which is frequently pointed out to him, and many people find him a bit strange. He's very good at his job, however.
  • Real Men Can Cook: He had to learn at an early age how to fend for himself, which led to him being a good cook.
  • Sanity Slippage: Being Amethio's doctor proves to be much harder than he ever could have imagined and slowly wears away at him.
  • Saying Too Much: Has a bad habit of doing this if he's not careful, and has gotten reprimanded several times in the past.
  • Secret-Keeper: Ends up being this for a lot of Amethio's secrets and traumas. While Amethio does eventually tell Gibeon and Spinel about some things, there are certain events in his life and particular feelings that he only ever divulges to Friede.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Tends to be underestimated and dismissed because he doesn't fit any typical doctor stereotypes. Despite this, he's extremely intelligent.
  • Stepford Smiler: Barely, at some points. He manages to keep his composure until Amethio dies. After that, he stops smiling for quite some time.
  • Sweet Tooth: While he will happy eat anything sweet, he loves ice cream the most. It's his comfort food.
  • Team Dad: Of the Saint Asagi General Hospital's children's ward, due to his natural leadership skills and outgoing personality.
  • Think Unsexy Thoughts: Attempts to do this whenever he finds himself thinking of Amethio in any kind of romantic or vaguely sexual way, as he's fully aware that he should not be viewing a teenager like that. It often works, but not always.
  • Unaffected by Spice: Can handle anything spicy.
  • Unexpected Virgin: Amethio is surprised to learn that Friede has no sexual experience, given how outgoing and attractive he is. Friede's explanation is that he's too insecure to ask anyone to sleep with him — which Amethio has trouble believing.
  • Unreliable Narrator: A lot of his interpretations and theories about Amethio are rather inaccurate. He's even less reliable when it comes to describing Gibeon.

     Amethio Forscher
Age: 15
Birthday: 2/14
Family: Gibeon (Father), Tanzan (Mother, divorced Gibeon when Amethio was five, died when Amethio was eight), Spinel (Brother), Gibeon's grandparents (Both deceased), Hamber (Family butler)

Friede's newest patient, who's recently been diagnosed with a rare terminal illness. Cynical and snarky on the surface, but underneath is hiding an abyss of sorrow and loneliness. Amethio struggles to adjust to life in hospital, and is initially very dismissive of Friede. However, he slowly starts to open up to his eccentric doctor.

Tropes that apply to Amethio:

  • Abusive Parents: Gibeon always blames Amethio for everything, and constantly berates him for every single thing he does (or doesn't do). Gibeon has a deep hatred for Amethio, and insults Amethio at every possible opportunity. This continues even after Amethio is diagnosed with his terminal illness, and even after Amethio's Attempted Suicide. It takes Gibeon's own Jerkass Realization, which is triggered by Amethio splashing water on him, for Gibeon to stop being abusive towards his dying son.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: While he's going through quite a bit of angst in canon with not being able to capture the black Rayquaza, most of what happens to Amethio in this AU is stuff that a kids' show would never touch upon. And then there's the terminal illness.
  • Ambiguous Syntax: Tries to be as vague as possible about things that upset him so that people leave him alone. Subverted with Friede, however, in that Amethio just tends to tell him things rather... bluntly.
  • Angry Cheek Puff: Does this unintentionally when he's mad. Friede thinks it's adorable.
  • Anxiety Dreams: Has several medical-related ones, as well as dreams about being abandoned by his parents.
  • Apologizes a Lot: To Gibeon, on the off chance that it'll make his father less angry. It never works.
  • Appearance Angst: Hates how he looks from head-to-toe. He's convinced he's ugly and wishes he was more masculine, and is annoyed that he doesn't look any more mature at the age of 15 than he did when he was 12 (which is due in part to his illness). His intense self-hatred of his looks stems from Spinel constantly telling him he's ugly, unclean and disgusting.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: Frequently. "My mother can't exactly visit me considering she's... well. She's dead." and "I have no intention of forgiving the man who seduced my father into an affair. And yes, I do remember. All of it. How could I possibly forget seeing you two in bed? That was my mother's bed. She should have been sleeping there. Not you." are two examples.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Considers his father Gibeon to be his greatest enemy in life. Even after Gibeon's Jerkass Realization and subsequent apology, Amethio still dislikes Gibeon more than he dislikes anybody else.
  • Asleep in Class: Amethio falling asleep in class a couple of times is one of the very first signs he's ill.
  • Athletically Challenged: Even before he was sick, he was always useless at sports and often came last in gym.
  • Attempted Suicide: He tries to strangle himself after having a massive breakdown due to being unable to take care of himself and having to rely on others for personal care. Ends up being an Interrupted Suicide thanks to Friede intervening.
  • The B Grade: Freaked out when he got a less-than-perfect grade on an important test, as he couldn't figure out why he did so poorly despite studying so hard. Turns out it's because he's very unwell.
  • Berserk Button: Has several, such as being touched without permission, people suddenly changing their minds at the last second, being called "cute", people assuming he's innocent and naive, amongst others. Friede keeps accidentally pushing them.
  • Big "NO!": Has a few of these. Mostly when Friede tells him he needs to accept that he needs help with personal care.
  • Birthday Hater: Partially because it's on Valentine's Day, but also because he hasn't celebrated it since before his mother died, so he's rather bitter about it.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Throws up blood on a few occasions due to his illness. The first time he does it, he panics.
  • Bookworm: When he has the energy, he spends a lot of his days in hospital reading.
  • Born Unlucky: Absolutely nothing in his life goes right for him. Except for meeting Friede.
  • Break the Cutie: The entirety of the story is breaking Amethio. Over and over and over again.
  • Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Determined to do this, and is frustrated that the universe hasn't given him the opportunity to do so since he'll die before he's able to become a parent.
  • Broken Bird: Thanks to all the abuse and trauma he's suffered throughout his life.
  • Broken Tears: Multiple times, but only in front of Friede — and only when he's emotionally exhausted to the point that he can't hide his tears any longer. Later on, he cries in front of Gibeon and Spinel too, although at that point he doesn't have very good control over his emotions.
  • Brutal Honesty: Frequently to Friede about how he feels about his life, and about how much he hates being in hospital. He calls out Friede's behaviour a lot, too.
  • Bullied into Depression: While Gibeon's emotional abuse certainly did its damage, the one to bully him to the point of very seriously considering suicide was Spinel.
  • Cannot Tell a Lie: Finds it very hard to lie, and as a result, he's terrible at it.
  • Chew Toy: Spends most of his life getting beat down by everyone around him. Spinel in particular used him as a punching bag for years.
  • Collapsed Mid-Speech: Happened to him in school during an assembly. He was promptly taken to the infirmary, and the school nurse decided to call an ambulance from there.
  • Covert Pervert: More perverted than he lets on due to his age and hormones. He's rather annoyed that he thinks this way.
  • The Cynic: Due to being recently diagnosed with a terminal illness at the age of fifteen, mostly.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Being diagnosed with a rare terminal illness and hospitalised indefinitely has made him very cynical and snarky.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Full of abuse and neglect at the hands of Gibeon and Spinel. He's also severely affected by his parents' divorce and his mother's sudden death.
  • The Darkness Before Death: Loses the ability to see during the last hours of his life.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Is always snarky around Friede, and is rather surprised when Friede is snarky back to him. (He's actually a Stepford Snarker.)
  • Delayed Diagnosis: The first time Amethio finally saw a doctor (which took quite a while to happen due to Gibeon being convinced Amethio was faking his symptoms), he was told there was probably something wrong with him, but they weren't sure what. When Amethio was properly hospitalised the first time, nobody could find what was wrong with him then, either, and when he was hospitalised a second time, it took over a week for the doctor he was assigned to there to diagnose him.
  • Delicate and Sickly: By virtue of being terminally ill. He hates that he's like this, and wishes he was stronger both mentally and physically.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Once he stops being able to take care of himself and can't walk anymore. While he was already not coping well with his terminal diagnosis, this is the point that makes him truly realise that his body's deteriorating and that he's going to die. This leads to his Attempted Suicide.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Amethio, despite how much he tries to deny it, just wants somebody to love him for who he is. This is ultimately a large reason why he ends up falling in love with Friede.
  • Driven to Suicide:
    • Almost, in the past. Thanks to Spinel's bullying and Spinel constantly telling Amethio that he should kill himself because it would make everyone happier.
    • He attempts suicide at one point during the actual story once he's unable to take care of himself and has to rely on others for help with personal care. Becomes a case of Interrupted Suicide.
  • Don't Look At Me: Says this frequently when his body does embarrassing things in front of others, such as when he cries.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: His general attitude about his terminal illness. He doesn't think he deserves pity.
  • Door Slam of Rage: Does this early on after shoving Friede out of his hospital room.
  • Easily Embarrassed Youngster: Was very shy as a kid. He's not much better as a teenager, and finds it highly shameful having Friede help him with any amount of personal care.
  • The Eeyore: When he's initially transferred to the Saint Asagi General Hospital, he makes it a point to make everyone around him as miserable as he is. Friede is able to slowly improve his mood over time — but only only to a certain extent. Once he's weak enough, however, he no longer has the energy to be miserable.
  • Embarrassing Hospital Gown: How he feels about wearing it initially. Eventually, he gets used to it, but he never grows comfortable wearing it.
  • Emotional Regression: Due to the overwhelming stress of being terminally ill.
  • Erotic Dream: Has couple about Friede. Although they're only vaguely erotic, Amethio's not amused with himself in the slightest.
  • Extremely Protective Child: Towards his mother Tanzan. The usually shy Amethio even stood up for her and tried to protect her against Gibeon during one of his parents' heated arguments. Unfortunately for Amethio, this just resulted in Gibeon beating him.
  • Face Death with Despair: Is extremely scared of dying, and as time goes on, it terrifies him more and more. This fear of death eventually causes a severe mental breakdown.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Is convinced that being bedridden, unable to communicate yet being fully aware of what's happening around him will be worse than actually dying.
  • Fear of Thunder: Which Friede finds out when Amethio spends a public holiday weekend at his apartment.
  • Feigning Healthiness: Did this for as long as possible, and even right up until he was given his terminal diagnosis, so that Gibeon wouldn't punish him. Gibeon thought Amethio was lying whenever he said he felt unwell and forced Amethio to attend school no matter how much Amethio begged his father to let him stay home.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Even though he's a loner, he absolutely hates having nobody around in hospital. Once he becomes bedridden, this gets to him even more. Friede can only visit him a couple of times a day, too.
  • Guilt Complex: Blames himself for his family falling apart, even though he was only five when he discovered that his father was having an affair.
  • Hates Being Touched: Due to being beaten by Gibeon a couple of times and repeatedly physically abused by Spinel.
  • Height Angst: Quite annoyed at how short he ended up being. Turns out it's because of his illness.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Much to his disgust — he blames Friede for it entirely. He tries his best to ignore his hormones.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Is convinced he's ugly and disgusting because of Spinel constantly insulting his appearance. He doesn't believe Friede at all when Friede tells Amethio he thinks he's beautiful.
  • Imagined Innuendo: Does this frequently, especially with Friede, and is always annoyed at himself that his mind goes to such vulgar places.
  • The Insomniac: Finds it very hard to sleep in hospital. Sleeping pills initially help, but they give him severe migraines, so he has to stop them.
  • Kick the Dog: Gets repeatedly kicked (both metaphorically and literally) by both Gibeon and Spinel for most of his life.
  • Likes Older Men: Amethio likes Friede. Friede's the first person he's ever loved, so he's not sure if this is the case, but Spinel teases Amethio about liking older men when he figures out Amethio's feelings for his hot doctor.
  • Lonely Rich Kid:
    • Has no friends. Liko, Roy and Dot think they've managed to befriend him, but Amethio has no idea if he considers them friends or not.
    • Becomes friends with Tera, only for that friendship to end when Amethio discovers that Lucius, Tera's adoptive father, is the man who ruined his life. Eventually, Amethio learns to accept that Tera has nothing to do with any of Lucius's actions, but he still finds himself unable to open up to Tera anymore.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: He's so used to hiding his pain to avoid punishment that when he has severe stomach pain, he acts like nothing's wrong. This causes him to require an emergency surgical procedure, which could have been avoided if he'd told Friede about the pain.
  • Mercy Kill Arrangement: Wants to invoke this, and even researches the topic himself, but is exasperated to find that the laws of the country he lives in don't allow euthanasia, even if the person has a terminal illness.
  • Mood-Swinger: While already not exactly emotionally stable, he becomes this for a period of time because of some medication Friede prescribes him, which causes him to randomly act physically violent out of frustration.
  • Morning Routine: Has a lot of trouble adjusting to the hospital's much more lax morning routine, and he absolutely hates not being able to do the tasks himself once he becomes unable to handle his own personal care.
  • Neat Freak: Is obsessed with staying clean and tidy even when he's severely ill. Turns out it's due to Spinel convincing him he's filthy and disgusting.
  • No-Respect Guy: He's extremely rude to the hospital staff at first, until Friede manages to win him over.
  • Obsessed with Perfect Attendance: Otherwise he'd be punished for missing school, even if he was sick.
  • Obsessively Organized: If Gibeon thought Amethio was disorganised or behind in his schoolwork at all, he'd be severely punished.
  • Parental Neglect: If Gibeon's not emotionally abusing Amethio, he's ignoring him.
  • The Patient Has Left the Building: Tried to run away from the first place he was hospitalised at, although he didn't get very far before being caught.
  • Peaceful in Death: What those around him believe when he dies. Seeing how much he suffered over the past year and a half made everyone, in some ways, relieved when he finally lets go. Friede in particular hopes that Amethio is at last able to rest — a sentiment shared by Amethio's family.
  • The Perfectionist: Found himself being forced to be this due to hoping to avoid punishment from Gibeon.
  • Prone to Tears: During the last couple of months of his life, when he's unable to control his emotions very well.
  • The Resenter: Hates Gibeon for betraying Tanzan by having an affair with Lucius.
  • Sanity Slippage: While he was already emotionally unstable, his mental health gets worse and worse following his hospitalisation and his body deteriorating, leading to an Attempted Suicide.
  • Secret Diary: Friede suggests that Amethio keep one on his phone so that he can write down his thoughts and maybe make some sense of them. Amethio does so, and ends up finding it somewhat useful. After Amethio's death, Friede reads his diary, and realises that he severely underestimated just how much Amethio cared for him.
  • Security Blanket: Friede buys Amethio a small stuffed owl to try and help calm him down. The owl ends up becoming this for Amethio.
  • Shameful Strip: Does not like having to take off his hospital gown in front of others. Even once he gets more comfortable being around Friede, he hates showing Friede his body, despite knowing there's nothing sexual about the situation.
  • Shower Shy: Is very self-conscious about his body and, as a result, he's extremely shy and anxious when Friede has to help him shower/bathe. Even after Amethio accepts that he needs the assistance, he never quite overcomes his shyness.
  • Shy Bladder: It becomes a problem when he starts needing help with toileting.
  • Significant Birthdate: His birthday is Valentine's Day. He's well aware of the irony that an unloved child like him is born on a day that celebrates love.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: His constant anger and irritability masks the abyss of sadness he truly feels.
  • Still Sucks Thumb: Took many years to break this habit as a child. He reverts back to doing it not too long after being hospitalised due to his inability to cope with the stressful situation.
  • Stress Vomit: In addition to throwing up a lot due to his illness, he does it because of stress, too.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Is extremely jealous of how smart and talented Spinel is and wishes he was more like his brother than he wants to admit.
  • Suicide for Others' Happiness: Believed this would happen when he was almost Driven to Suicide by Spinel in the past.
  • Super Gullible: As a child, he tended to believe everything he was told. Spinel took advantage of this, so Amethio has some rather odd beliefs about how certain things work.
  • Tantrum Throwing: Once his mental state starts to decline and he struggles to control his emotions, he becomes prone to tantrums. Friede internally notes that he's becoming similar to some of the younger patients — a revelation that scares him.
  • Tender Tears: Multiple times, particularly once he gets weaker physically and exhausted mentally.
  • Too Unhappy to Be Hungry: Frequently skips meals. Friede ends up asking Murdock, the dietician, for help. Friede initially wonders if it's because of Amethio's illness, but it turns out it's actually because he's rather depressed.
  • Tragic Dream: Wants to get married and start his own family so that Gibeon can look at Amethio and be jealous of the kind of husband/father Amethio is. Being diagnosed with a terminal illness at the age of fifteen, Amethio knows there's no hope of him ever fulfilling this wish.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Amethio's gloves are actually Tanzan's. After she died, Spinel and Amethio were allowed to choose something of hers to bring home with them. Amethio was too young to really know what he wanted, but he decided on the gloves, as he remembered just how elegant his mother used to look while wearing them.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Walks in on his father Gibeon having an affair with another man (Lucius), Gibeon then starts being emotionally abusive (as well as occasionally physically abusive), his parents get divorced because Amethio spoke up about said affair, his older brother Spinel starts physically abusing him (due to not coping with their mother leaving them), his mother Tanzan dies a couple of years later and Spinel's abuse gets increasingly worse as a result. Once Amethio enters high school, Gibeon becomes harsher and harsher, and Amethio starts having health issues that go ignored until he collapses a few too many times at school and is hospitalised. On his second hospitalisation, he's diagnosed with a rare terminal illness and has probably less than two years to live.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: Does this frequently towards the end of his life when he's unable to handle things.
  • Trying Not to Cry: Does this constantly, as he sees crying as being immature and weak. However, as time goes on, he's less and less able to control his emotions and cries quite easily. But he does his best to avoid crying in front of his family even when he's nearing the end of his life.
  • Tsundere: Is usually nagging Friede about something, but once he begins to trust Friede more, Amethio finds himself getting somewhat flustered around him.
  • The Un-Favorite: Gibeon repeatedly reminds him that he's this. Part of Amethio agrees and believes he is the cause of all of his father's problems, while another part of himself feels as though he didn't actually do anything to warrant Gibeon's hatred.
  • Valentine's Day Vitriol: Partly because he thinks love is a joke, and partially because it's his birthday.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: More than anything else, Amethio wants his father to be proud of him after he grows up to be a successful adult. And, ultimately, he wants Gibeon to be jealous of him.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Is given, at most, two years to live. He lasts about a year and a half before he dies.

     Gibeon Forscher
Age: Mid-40s
Birthday: 6/15
Family: Tanzan (Ex-wife, deceased), Spinel (Oldest son), Amethio (Younger son), Mother & Father (Both deceased), Hamber (Personal attendant)

Amethio and Spinel's father and head of the Forscher family. A strict, coldhearted man who runs the family's financial business. Has always treated Amethio horribly, and wishes his younger son didn't exist.

NOTE: Since this fic is being written at a point in time where we know absolutely nothing about canon Gibeon, expect this characterization of him to be wildly inaccurate. Also, several tropes related to Gibeon are unmarked spoilers.

Tropes that apply to Gibeon:

  • Abusive Parents: Horribly emotionally abusive towards his sons, particularly Amethio. His own parents were physically, emotionally and sexually abusive towards him when he was young.
  • Afraid of Doctors: Turns out to be scared of doctors due to trauma, and it's one of the (many) reasons why he's so apprehensive towards Friede.
  • Afraid to Hold the Baby: The first time he held Spinel, he was paralysed with fear at how tiny and fragile his newborn son was, and was terrified he'd somehow hurt Spinel. From then on, he never held Spinel again, and when Amethio was born, he refused to hold him at all. Towards the end of Amethio's life, Friede even asks Gibeon if he ever held Amethio, and Gibeon admits to him that he didn't. Gibeon realises that he regrets this, and Friede encourages him to give Amethio hugs, even though hugging his dying 16-year-old son isn't the same as holding a newborn baby.
  • Asshole Victim: Blames the fact that he was forced by his family to marry and have children on Amethio — his younger son. As it turns out, Gibeon was abused by his own parents, but even Gibeon himself ends up agreeing that that's no reason to take his frustrations at his own cowardice out on Amethio.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Has always resented Amethio and Amethio's very existence, and so he's always wished that Amethio never existed in the first place, and that he'd die. He comes to deeply regret this by the time Amethio actually does die.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: Gibeon realises he's become this after his Jerkass Realization and that he ultimately wanted to be a better parent than his own abusive father, but because of his cowardice, he grew twisted and resentful towards his sons.
  • Because I Said So: His preferred method of shutting up his sons.
  • Berserk Button: Has several, including people deliberately breaking rules in front of him, things being out of order, deadlines not being met, amongst many others. His biggest is anyone accusing him of being an abuser. Lucius used to push his regulation-related buttons intentionally, mostly, to see how he'd react.
  • Blatant Lies: A lot of what Gibeon says to his sons, especially about himself.
  • Book Smart: Was always the top of his grade in school. He even got an award in academic excellence at one point.
  • Bound and Gagged: As a kid, he got kidnapped (and raped) like this. The kidnapping was set up by his father to teach him a lesson about disobedience.
  • Break the Haughty: Very slowly gets chipped away at and repeatedly called out for his behaviour towards Amethio. He eventually does break — and it's painful for everyone involved.
  • Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Ends up realising that, just like Amethio, HE wanted to break the cycle (since he was abused by his parents), but he became twisted by resentment instead and lashed out at his own sons.
  • Brutal Honesty: Ends up being brutally honest about himself (and his failures at being a parent) after his Jerkass Realization.
  • Cannot Talk to Women: He tries his best to hide it, but he's very awkward trying to talk to women. Even his wife.
  • Cannot Tell a Joke: Has absolutely no sense of humour, and finds it impossible to joke around with people.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Loses his temper whenever someone criticises him. At least before his Jerkass Realization, after which he just agrees with whatever criticisms people have of him.
  • Child Hater: A lot of it is projection over hating how he was as a child. He gets over this.
  • Class Representative: Was this every single year of high school.
  • Closet Gay: Doesn't stop him from having an affair with the man he secretly dated in high school. Lucius, his boyfriend, is the only person who knows about Gibeon's sexuality — until their affair is found out by Amethio, who tells the butler Hamber and his mother (and Gibeon's wife) Tanzan.
  • The Comically Serious: As far as Lucius and his friends were concerned, Gibeon was mostly this in high school. He was so serious about everything to do with school rules that it was somewhat amusing.
  • Coming Out to Spouse: Was forced to admit to Tanzan that he's homosexual following her finding out about his affair with Lucius.
  • Control Freak: Likes to be in charge of everyone and everything and gets angry when he can't call the shots himself. He was even part of the Disciplinary Committee in high school.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Exactly why he was adamant about keeping his high school relationship with Lucius a secret.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Used to be this in his younger days, especially with Lucius, although he stopped being snarky once he graduated high school.
  • Does Not Know How to Say "Thanks": While he struggled to openly thank Lucius, Lucius could always tell that Gibeon was grateful by his general demeanor.
  • The Dreaded: Anybody who knows him almost immediately learns that it's a very bad idea to anger him in the slightest. He's been this way since middle school.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Spends a few weeks drinking heavily after Amethio dies.
  • Education Mama: Cares more about education than his sons' health, to the point that he accused Amethio of faking his health issues to get out of school.
  • Emotion Suppression: Quickly learned that this was the easiest solution when trying to process the sexual abuse he was facing from his parents.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Has a giant scar on his back that's from being burned by his father pouring boiling water on him deliberately.
  • Forced Out of the Closet: After his family found out about his affair with Lucius, Gibeon was forced to admit that he's homosexual.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Was forced to take over the Forscher family's business and live up to extremely high expectations. He was also forced to marry and have children, none of which he wanted to do.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Gibeon tries to explain how he ended up the way he did, but he himself acknowledges that it doesn't lessen the pain his sons went through, and he doesn't want to use excuses for himself. He doesn't want to make it seem like the abuse he suffered is any excuse for how he treated Spinel and Amethio, as he's aware he's still fully responsible for his own actions as an adult — and as a parent.
  • Funeral Banishment: Was not allowed to attend Tanzan's funeral, although Spinel and Amethio were. He's also forbidden from contacting Tanzan's family at all, and is barred from visiting her grave.
  • Gayngst: A lot of it, due to being forced to marry and have children thanks to his position as his family's only heir.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: When he learns how his family originally made their money: through child exploitation and sex trafficking.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Anything and everything makes him angry, even completely innocent questions and remarks.
  • Hates Being Touched: Due to being sexually abused by both his parents. He's even rather uncomfortable with Lucius touching him, despite their sexual relationship.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Says something to this effect to Friede after Amethio dies.
  • Internalized Categorism: Displayed some internalised homophobia before his affair with Lucius, after which he stopped being openly homophobic, as he was aware it made him a hypocrite.
  • It Was a Gift: Has a favorite necktie that was a birthday gift from Lucius in high school. As such, he only wears it on very special occasions.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As a teenager, Gibeon would defend the disadvantaged students and those belonging to minority groups at his high school when nobody else was willing to stand up for them. Adult Gibeon is a Jerk with a Heart of Jerk. Until he gets over himself.
  • Jerkass Realization: Has a major one thanks to Amethio (unintentionally) forcing him to face his deepest traumas. It causes him to take a long, hard look at himself and makes him finally realise just how horribly he's treated Spinel and Amethio. While he struggles to admit to his sons that he feels remorse for his behaviour, he does end up having a deep discussion with them about his past and how he came to be the bitter man that he is. Amethio and Spinel are reluctant to forgive him, although they can both tell that Gibeon is genuinely sorry for his actions, so they decide to give him a chance to be a better father. Amethio, at least, is extremely upset that this is all happening only a few months before he's going to die.
  • Lack of Empathy: Gets called out for this frequently. It turns out he CAN still feel empathy, but he locked his emotions away as they were too overwhelming for him.
  • Lie Back and Think of England: On the few occasions he had sex with Tanzan.
  • Literal-Minded: Metaphors are completely lost on him and go way over his head.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: After several months of dating, Gibeon finally found the courage to tell Lucius about the burn scar from his father that he has on his back during their weekend trip they took to the Forscher family's summer home... only for Lucius to laugh at him. Gibeon then made the decision to never tell anyone about his trauma ever again. However, the true reason Lucius laughed at him, which Gibeon isn't aware of, was at the sheer absurdity of the situation and how horrific it all was, not because he was making fun of Gibeon.
  • Never My Fault: Always blames things going wrong on Amethio. He eventually pivots and realises that everything is his fault, and he was just projecting.
  • No Social Skills: When he's not being rude and haughty, he's actually rather socially awkward, so he prefers to keep to himself.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Suddenly gets quiet and calm. That's how Amethio knows he's truly angry. And remorseful.
  • Obsessively Organized: Has to be on top of everything. He has several digital calendars and multiple reminders for important events/meetings. (It's a coping mechanism to trick himself into thinking he's in control of his life.)
  • The Only One I Trust: Feels this way about Hamber, especially when it comes to being touched in non-sexual ways. The other exception is Lucius, when it comes to actual sexual ways, but even then, Gibeon still keeps his guard up when Lucius is being intimate with him. When he's hospitalised, he insists that Hamber be the one to perform any physical exams/checkups. Lucca protests by saying that he needs a doctor to do that, to which Gibeon informs her that Hamber has a nursing degree. Since Gibeon won't back down, and is adamant that nobody else is allowed to touch him, Lucca eventually agrees — but only to get him to undertake the checkups so that he can go home quicker, which both Lucca and Gibeon want.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: Due to being sexually abused by his parents from a young age, Gibeon is terrified of sex, although he did have a sexual relationship with Lucius in high school and enjoyed it. Even during his affair with Lucius as an adult, Gibeon is still unsure of the idea of sex, and while he more or less does completely trust Lucius, he can't entirely erase his fear that Lucius will somehow hurt him during sex. He's too scared to admit this to Lucius, since he's convinced Lucius will either make fun of him or be offended.
  • The Perfectionist: He has to do everything properly and perfectly. As it turns out, this was forced on to him: his father would punish him if he wasn't perfect.
  • Perpetual Frowner: At best, his expression is neutral, but for the most part, he looks angry.
  • Psychological Projection: Realises he was projecting his insecurities and failures on to Amethio because Amethio reminded Gibeon of how he was as a child. He feels very guilty about this.
  • Rape and Switch: Gibeon goes through a bit of a dilemma when he realises he's sexually attracted to Lucius, and wonders if he's sexually attracted to men because of his father's sexual abuse of him. But then he works out that this doesn't make sense, since his mother also sexually abuses him, and he's not attracted to women at all.
  • Rape as Backstory: By both his mother and his father. Started when he was a young child and only stopped when Gibeon turned eighteen.
  • Rape as Drama: The abuse by his parents is treated very seriously.
  • Repressed Memories:
    • Many of physical and sexual abuse he experienced at the hands of his parents, as well as taking part in his father's secret photoshoots of children and being kidnapped and raped by a group of strangers. The memories of the photoshoots only come back when investigators turn up at his house asking about his father, who has been dead for almost a decade.
    • The memory of his father angrily pouring boiling water on him when he was a child wasn't entirely repressed, but he realised after reliving it through a flashback that he'd tried to forget a lot of the details.
  • The Resenter: Hates Amethio for existing, and being a reminder of Gibeon's own cowardice and his inability to live his own life. Amethio can't understand why until towards the end of his life when he learns more about his father, but even then, he doesn't forgive Gibeon for how he was treated.
  • Running Away to Cry: When Lucius confronts Gibeon about his parents sexually abusing him, Gibeon yells at Lucius about how he doesn't understand anything, and proceeds to run off. Once Gibeon reaches an unused classroom in the school that he usually retreats to for privacy, he breaks down in tears of shame.
  • Safety in Indifference: Part of why he shut off his emotions and is so distant from everyone. He ends up learning the hard way that this doesn't work.
  • Sanity Slippage: After Lucius broke up with him upon graduation and left to travel the world, Gibeon became more and more unstable. His marriage to Tanzan and the birth of Spinel made matters increasingly worse, too.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: While he can never tell when someone else is being sarcastic towards him, he himself used to make a lot of sarcastic remarks towards Lucius back in high school. Much to Lucius's amusement.
  • Scars Are Forever: The burn scar on his back that his father inflicted upon him with boiling water when Gibeon was a child.
  • Scrubbing Off the Trauma: Takes very long baths and does this whenever he washes himself due to prolonged sexual abuse from both his parents for years, from when he was a child until he turned eighteen. Even as an adult, and almost a decade after the deaths of his parents (which he himself is responsible for), Gibeon continues to feel unclean inside and out.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Always dresses in very fancy suits when out of the house. Even at home, he makes sure his clothes are perfectly presentable.
  • The Sociopath: Invoked by him deliberately to the point that he's shut off any emotions (other than anger).
  • Soulless Bedroom: There's a single bed and a chest of drawers. That's it. The large size of the room makes it seem very eerie.
  • Stoic Spectacles: Is stoic whenever he's not shouty, and he wears glasses.
  • "Stop Having Fun" Guy: As part of the Disciplinary Committee, this was essentially his job in high school. As an adult, he's even stricter with those around him — whether they be his employees or his own sons — and shuts down any amount of fun, which he sees as a waste of time.
  • Straight Gay: He purposefully acts this way. Tanzan didn't initially believe Amethio when he told her about Gibeon's affair with Lucius purely because she couldn't imagine her husband sleeping with another man.
  • Sympathetic Murder Backstory: Killed his parents by poisoning them when he learned that his father had started to sexually abuse a young Spinel. While his mother hadn't hurt Spinel at that point, Gibeon knew it was only a matter of time since she'd abused Gibeon himself in the past, too, so he decided to kill her as well.
  • Talking to Themself: Argues with himself when he's trying to justify his inexcusable actions/behaviours. When he's hospitalised, Friede wonders if he has some kind of split personality disorder going on, but it turns out to stem from severe abuse and insecurities with himself. Gibeon does not see the entity he's arguing with as a separate person.
  • A Taste of the Lash: Was repeatedly lashed by his father when he was younger.
  • They're Called "Personal Issues" for a Reason: While Gibeon does eventually tell his sons his life story full of incestual abuse, he purposefully omits several details, and there are certain things he never speaks to anyone about, such as the Forscher family's original business.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Once he learns to accept his trauma as reality and subsequently stops blaming Amethio for everything.
  • Tranquil Fury: When he's truly angry, he gets eerily quiet and calm. Everyone thinks he's terrifying.
  • Trauma Button: Amethio angrily pouring a jar of water on Gibeon causes him to scream and pass out, as it triggers a memory he's tired for decades to forget of his father deliberately pouring boiling water on him in order to burn him.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Completely forgot about taking part in his father's sleazy photoshoots of children until he was interviewed by investigators. He initially thought the investigators were lying when they contacted him, but his memories returned once he was shown (cropped) photos of himself.
  • Tsundere: As a teenager, he was most often berating Lucius for breaking school rules, but behind the scenes he would get rather flustered whenever Lucius doted on him.
  • Unable to Cry: Realises that he's shut off his emotions SO efficiently that he's unable to cry over Amethio's situation, even after Amethio's death. He doesn't cry until he reads Amethio's letter to him.
  • Unfocused During Intimacy: With Tanzan, since he's not attracted to women. He feels bad about it though.
  • Unknowingly in Love: With Lucius, initially. It took him a while to figure his emotions out.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After getting accidentally triggered by Amethio and realising that he can't keep running away from his trauma, and that he's been horribly abusive towards his sons.
  • What Have I Become?: When he finally realises how he's been mistreating his sons, he's horrified at himself.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Struggles with this. Especially when he questions if he was ever in love with Lucius in the first place.
  • Workaholic: Done intentionally so that he can spend as much time away from home as possible. He absorbs himself in his work as a distraction from the real world and his own mind.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Gibeon has physically hurt Amethio on a few occasions, and that's not to mention all the mental abuse and neglect he's subjected Amethio to over the years.
  • Younger Than They Look: Looks much older than his mid 40s due to all the trauma.

     Spinel Forscher
Age: 20
Birthday: 9/9
Family: Gibeon (Father), Tanzan (Mother, divorced Gibeon when Spinel was eleven, died when he was thirteen), Amethio (Brother), Blacky (Cat), Grandparents (On Gibeon's side; both deceased), Hamber (Family butler)

Amethio's smug, proud older brother. Used to bully Amethio relentlessly, but now just ignores him. A young adult studying business and finance at university. Heir of the Forscher family, and fully aware of his high standing in life.

Tropes that apply to Spinel:

  • Aloof Big Brother: Once he stops bullying Amethio, he simply ignores him. He eventually becomes nicer.
  • Big Brother Bully: Is a big brother bully to Amethio who tormented him for years following their parents' divorce. Spinel would physically and emotionally abuse and manipulate Amethio in many ways, including encouraging Amethio to end his own life and telling Amethio he's worthless and that nobody loves him. He ends up regretting his actions, and apologises to Amethio.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Spinel, despite everything, DOES end up having this towards Amethio at the end of Amethio's life. He's determined to make Amethio happy, and even calls out Gibeon on Amethio's behalf a few times for good measure, too.
  • Book Smart: He does very well academically and is always at the top of his class.
  • The Casanova: A former KidAnova who has had many fangirls/boys from a young age.
  • Closet Geek: Actually really likes video games and anime. Keeps this a secret from his family, since he knows Gibeon would never approve of such hobbies.
  • Compulsive Liar: Started doing this to appease Gibeon, but eventually became unable to stop. It's especially frequent when he's super stressed.
  • Dark Secret: That he was sexually abused by his grandfather when he was a child. Only Gibeon knows that he experienced such a thing.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After Amethio dies. He does not cope well at all and resorts to substance abuse.
  • Does Not Like Men: Doesn't trust adult men who are older than himself due to past sexual abuse from his grandfather.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: As pointed out by his grandfather, in an extremely inappropriate way.
  • The Fake Cutie: As a child, he did his best to appease the adults around him by acting cute and innocent, and assumed this would make people like him more. It turns out to backfire on him when his grandfather takes advantage of the (seemingly) naive persona he's created.
  • The Fashionista: Was inspired by Tanzan, who always dressed glamorously.
  • The Gadfly: Maliciously towards Amethio, but at one point it shifted from this into actual bullying. In the present, he's this towards Friede until his Jerkass Realization, when he stops this behaviour.
  • Growing Up Sucks: Hated going through puberty as it meant he started resembling Tanzan less and less, and felt as though he was losing his only connection to her.
  • Guyliner: Wears crimson eyeliner.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: The first person to make him aware of this was his grandfather, back when Spinel was only ten.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: When he's in his bedroom and hears Gibeon yelling at Amethio, he puts on loud music to drown out his father's abuse. He does this at lectures too, but his friends pester him anyway.
  • Hyper-Awareness: Really wishes he wasn't like this, but he developed it as a defense mechanism in response to being sexually abused by his grandfather.
  • It's All About Me: With exception to Gibeon, he sees himself as superior to everyone. He eventually deflates his ego a bit.
  • Jerkass Realization: Similarly to Gibeon, but not nearly as extreme with how he comes to realise his behaviour. Seeing Gibeon admit that he was horrible to his sons makes Spinel realise that he was also awful towards Amethio with his relentless bullying and death threats, and makes an effort to mend his relationship with his younger brother as much as possible before Amethio's death. Amethio, however, is apprehensive towards Spinel even then and it takes Amethio a long time to finally trust him.
  • Kids Are Cruel: Bullied Amethio relentlessly for years. It stopped only when Spinel started attending university and ran out of free time.
  • Mask of Sanity: Seems like a completely normal person on the outside, but he brutally bullied and abused Amethio for years, to the point of telling Amethio to kill himself. Gibeon's extreme expectations for him are a large contributor.
  • Messy Hair: No matter how much he tries, it's impossible to straighten.
  • Momma's Boy: Was extremely close to Tanzan, which is why he's still upset about her death.
  • Narcissist: Comes across as this, but he's secretly extremely insecure and the narcissism is a coping mechanism.
  • Proud Beauty: Is very boastful about his beauty. It's a coping mechanism.
  • Psychological Projection: A lot of his emotional abuse towards Amethio, such as telling Amethio he was ugly, stupid, dirty/unclean and unlovable, were how he saw himself as a person. However, as a teenager, he was unable to process his insecurities, and lashed out at his younger brother as a result. Like Gibeon, Spinel ends up feeling remorseful about his behaviour.
  • Rich Bitch: He's wealthy and stuck-up.
  • Ridiculously High Relationship Standards: Has never been in a relationship because he doesn't think anybody is good enough for him. He loosens up once he gets older.
  • Sanity Slippage: Started when his grandfather molested him at the age of ten. See Used to Be a Sweet Kid below.
  • Smells Sexy: Smells faintly of roses.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After Gibeon's Jerkass Realization, Spinel realises he, too, has been horrible towards Amethio — which Amethio also calls him out for directly, just as he did with his father. Seeing Gibeon apologise and start trying to be kinder to Amethio is what makes Spinel also decide to own up to his behaviour.
  • Troubled Toybreaker: Whenever he was unable to live up to Gibeon's expectations of him when he was younger, he'd take his frustrations out on Amethio's toys.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Until he was sexually abused as a child. And then his parents went through a messy divorce. And then his mother died.

     Lucius Fiala
Age: Mid-40s
Birthday: 5/28
Family: Mother, Diana (Cousin), Lucca (Diana's daughter), Liko (Diana's granddaughter), Tera (Adopted child), Friede (Lucca's adoptive son)

The name of the mysterious gardener Amethio meets and befriends at the hospital. Knew Gibeon in high school, but Amethio isn't aware of this initially. Gibeon had an affair with him, which resulted in Amethio's parents' divorce.

NOTE: As Lucius is pretty much a Walking Spoiler, most tropes related to him in this folder will be unmarked.

Tropes that apply to Lucius:

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Thinks his mother is this due to her constant praise of him.
  • Animal Lover: Talks to every single animal he sees, even insects/spiders. He never kills bugs, either — he just puts them outside.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: His comfort food is macaroni & cheese with strawberry jam mixed in.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Finds it hard to motivate himself to study. He's very smart, though.
  • Caring Gardener: Amethio first meets him in the hospital's flower garden, where he's lovingly watering the plants while talking to them. As Amethio later learns, Lucius is solely responsible for the hospital's flower garden, which he started as a memorial to the first patient who died under his care. Since then, he's planted a flower or plant for every single patient who's died at the hospital, even after he stepped down as director.
  • The Charmer: Everyone around him has always thought he was incredibly charming. In high school, it got to the point that his friends were rather jealous of his antics, as Lucius would purposefully flirt with anybody, and sometimes even unintentionally. This is partially how he managed to win over Gibeon.
  • Child by Rape: His mother was raped by a teacher while she was still a student.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Loves experimenting and trying out different food combinations.
  • The Defroster: With Gibeon back in high school, although the effects were only temporary.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Why he went off to travel the world after graduating from high school.
  • Dork Horse Candidate: Saw himself as this, but ended up becoming the student council president nonetheless. He had to call on Gibeon for help.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: His popularity isn't limited to women. In fact, he may have been more popular with men in high school, according to some of his friends.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Partially why he set up the hospital. By extension, he's also a Friend to All Children.
  • Friendship as Courtship: Why he wanted to befriend Gibeon in the first place.
  • Going Commando: Tried doing this for a time in high school. Stopped when Gibeon found out and informed him that lack of underwear is against the school's dress code.
  • The Gadfly: In high school, especially towards Gibeon, who everyone else avoided or, at the very least, never dared to make jokes around.
  • I Was Quite the Looker: Jokes about how hot he used to be, even though most people think he's still rather attractive.
  • Hates Being Alone: Is not fond of being left alone with his brain, as he can easily become fixated on very dark thoughts.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Due to not owning anything of his own until he was well and truly an adult.
  • Karma Houdini: Amethio firmly believes Lucius is this. After Lucius's affair with Gibeon was brought to light, the Forscher family descended into chaos, which led to Amethio's parents going through a very messy divorce. Lucius, as far as Amethio is aware, was not part of any of the legal proceedings, and simply cut off all contact with Gibeon and his family. Amethio has never forgiven Lucius, and thinks Lucius is a massive coward for failing to own up to his actions.
  • Lower-Class Lout: As a teenager, he viewed himself as this, since he got into Ginkgo Academy by winning a scholarship. He felt like it was extra apparent once he learned just how rich Gibeon was.
  • Manchild: Purposefully acts immature and childish, but is also naturally this. He wants to bring joy to people's lives, and, at the same time, doesn't think there's any point in approaching life negatively.
  • Minor Major Character: In addition to all his connections to Gibeon and thus Amethio, he's the person who set up the Saint Asagi General Hospital in the first place.
  • No Sense of Direction: Makes fun of himself for this, and thinks it's extra amusing since he spent years traveling the world and constantly found himself lost. He barely knows his way around the hospital, and he was the one who set it up.
  • Not a Morning Person: Takes forever to wake up in the mornings.
  • The Prankster: Lucius and his friends were this in high school, much to the annoyance of Gibeon, who usually had to clean up after their messes.
  • Scholarship Student: Was extremely self-conscious about this and tried to hide it. It made him convinced that Gibeon secretly looked down upon him (Gibeon, if anything, was impressed that someone of Lucius's background managed to get into the school at all).
  • School Idol: Everybody liked him. Except Gibeon. Which is why Lucius was so drawn to Gibeon in the first place.
  • Student Council President: Lucius was this. Gibeon, the vice president, did all the work, though.
  • Support Your Parents: Was determined to get into a good high school so that he could have a decent education and in the future support his poor single mother.
  • Talking to Plants: Converses with everything in the flower garden. Is even doing it when Amethio first meets him there.

     Hamber
Age: Early 60s
Birthday: 10/4
Family: Father (Deceased), Mother (Deceased), the rest of the Forscher family, Lucca (Daughter)

The Forscher family's main butler and Gibeon's attendant. Very close to Gibeon.

Tropes that apply to Hamber:

  • I Gave My Word: Is very loyal to Gibeon, although he does call Gibeon out for his abusive behaviour after Amethio's Attempted Suicide.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: While he has to be socially reserved due to his job, his true nature is this.
  • Grew a Spine: Was always too scared to stand up to Gibeon, but after Gibeon still treats Amethio horribly following Amethio's Attempted Suicide, Hamber decides he's had enough and calls out Gibeon for his behaviour.
  • The Jeeves: Smart, polite, well-groomed, loyal to Gibeon, and will go out of his way to do his job.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Lucca is actually his biological daughter, and he tells her as much after Amethio's death.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Several people, including Lucca, have wondered if he's actually Gibeon's significantly older romantic partner and the two are just trying to cover it up.
  • Only Sane Man: Hamber is the only sane person in the Forscher family household as far as Friede's concerned.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Amethio telling Hamber about Gibeon's affair and Hamber, in turn, confronting Gibeon about it is a major catalyst for several important events on the story.
  • The Stoic: Even when he gets angry, he's expressionless.
  • Terse Talker: Only says what is absolutely necessary.

     Tanzan
Age: Early 30s at the time of her death
Birthday: 12/14
Family: Spinel (Son), Amethio (Son), Gibeon (Ex-husband), Mother, Father, Younger brother

Amethio and Spinel's mother (OC), and Gibeon's ex-wife. A kind and elegant woman who cared very deeply about her sons, even after being betrayed by her ex-husband. Divorced Gibeon when Amethio was six. Died when Amethio was eight.

NOTE: Most tropes related to Tanzan are spoilers and are thus unmarked.

Tropes that apply to Tanzan:

  • Death by Origin Story: In relation to Amethio.
  • Family Theme Naming: Like her sons, she's named after a mineral — Tanzanite.
  • The Fashionista: Always dressed very stylishly.
  • High-Class Gloves: Wore these. Amethio wears a pair of them as a Tragic Keepsake.
  • The Lost Lenore: When Friede learns that she's dead, he initially wonders if that's the reason for Gibeon's cruel behaviour towards his sons. Friede then finds out about Gibeon's affair, however, and quickly changes his mind. It turns out she is this to Mireille.
  • Missing Mom: Friede realises that Amethio never mentions his mother. Turns out she's dead, and Amethio is still very upset by her death.
  • Posthumous Character: Died seven years prior to the story.
  • Proper Lady: Struggled to be this, but for the most part managed to play the role of one. She hated it, though.
  • Removed from the Picture: All Forscher family portraits have Tanzan removed following their divorce, which greatly upsets both Spinel and Amethio.

  • Cool Teacher: To Friede in high school, she was this. Also a Hot Teacher to him, too.

Tera Fiala

Age: 10
Birthday: 1/15
Family: Lucius (Adoptive father), other Fiala family members
Lucius's adopted child who spends a lot of time at the Saint Asagi General Hospital, but not as a patient. They simply want to make the other kids there happy and provide someone they can talk to. Humanised version of Terapagos.

NOTE: Most tropes related to Tera are spoilers and are thus unmarked.

Liz

Age: 14
Birthday: 5/7
One of Friede's first patients. While she's long been discharged from the Saint Asagi General Hospital, she still keeps in contact with Friede, and sometimes visits the children's ward to help cheer up the current patients there. Humanised version of Friede's Charizard/Lizardon.

  • One-Note Cook: Zir is really good at making fried rice that specifically suits Amethio's tastes, but he hasn't learned how to cook much else yet.
  • Those Two Guys: Of the Forscher household.

Blacky

Spinel's pampered black cat. (Cat version of Spinel's Umbreon/Bracky.)
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Acts like this towards Spinel, despite being a cat. She won't let anyone touch him, and hisses whenever someone enters Spinel's room.

Gibeon's Parents

Died when Amethio was five. Gibeon's father was the former head of the Forscher family.
  • Abusive Parents: Both of them sexually abused Gibeon from when he was a child until he turned eighteen. Gibeon's father went on to start sexually abusing Spinel when Spinel was ten.
  • Harmful to Minors: Both of them. They not only sexually abused Gibeon when he was a child, but Gibeon's father began sexually abusing Spinel when Spinel was only ten. His father also ran a child sex trafficking ring.
  • Senior Creep: Gibeon's father in particular due to his sexual abuse of both Gibeon and Spinel when they were children. His mother, however, showed signs of this too — Gibeon was the only person who knew.

Hamber's Father

Attendant of Gibeon's father. Died before Amethio was born.
  • The Stoic: To the point that the other staff wondered if he was legally not allowed to display emotion.

  • All Women Are Lustful: Sango believes this, although there's no way to tell how serious she's being about it.
  • Freaky Is Cool: Sango is an occult fan.
  • Loveable Sex Maniac: Sango is very flirtatious, tries to seduce people a lot, and quite open about sex and frequently bemoans not having a sexual partner. Her friends don't seem to really mind, although they do turn down her offers.
  • The Stoic: Both Onyx and Agate, although Onyx is of the quieter variety.

Sou Alzalg

Age: 15
Birthday: 9/4
One of Amethio's classmates, and the first person who notices something isn't right with him. Humanised version of Amethio's Soublades/Ceruledge.

Friede's Parents

Both deceased. Friede's mother walked out on the family when Friede was five, so he doesn't remember her that well.

     Other Characters (High School AU)

Lucius's Mother

Family: Lucius (Son), Diana (Niece), Older sister (Diana's mother)
Lucius's young, single mother, who raised him on her own. A kind and bubbly woman.

Lucius's Friends

Ray, Olivia, Fi, Lace, Tei and Kiri. Like Lucius, they enjoy pranks, and are just there to have a good time at school. Unlike Lucius, they're not very fond of Gibeon.

Pincipal Cogito Ginkgo

Family: Volo (Grandson?)
Principal of Ginkgo Academy.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When Gibeon and Lucius were locked in the storage room for several hours after school, she was informed of it, and saw the boys the next day. She took the blame for not having a more reliable system in place for checking to see if someone was in the room before locking up for the day.

Volo Ginkgo

Family: Cogito (Grandmother?)
A schoolmate of Gibeon and Lucius, who can sense there's something going on between them and wants to get to the bottom of their relationship.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Flirts with everyone. It never works.
  • School News Paper Newshound: Keeps bothering people for news stories, including Lucius. Lucius sometimes gets Gibeon to help out if Volo forces Lucius to investigate something — but Volo and Gibeon dislike each other, so it makes their investigations rather awkward.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Lucius and Gibeon, and thinks they'd be great together in a relationship. What Volo doesn't know (until later on) is that they are actually dating.
  • Urban Legend Love Life: Likes to act as though he's slept around a lot, but in reality, he's only had sex once.

This fanfiction will (probably) show examples of:

     Friede/Amethio Hospital AU Tropes (Present)
  • Abusive Parents: Gibeon is frequently emotionally (and occasionally physically) abusive towards Amethio. He got it from his own parents.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Most Pokemon are now humans, with the exception of Spinel's Bracky/Umbreon, who's a pampered black cat.
  • Adults Are Useless: Amethio believes this, due to his past experiences. Friede wants to prove him wrong.
  • An Aesop: Never forget how to love. It's what makes you human.
  • Age-Gap Romance: Deconstructed. There's a 12-year age difference between Friede and Amethio, and they're both aware of the implications of this.
  • Almost Kiss: Friede and Amethio have a few, but Amethio usually chickens out before he actually kisses Friede.
  • Amicable Exes: Hamber and Diana are on good terms with each other, although they keep minimal contact.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Friede to Amethio after Amethio's Interrupted Suicide, which Friede intervened. It's the first time Friede's gotten truly angry at Amethio, and it's the first time he makes Amethio cry from fear. Friede immediately feels incredibly guilty about it and apologises for going too far, but Amethio takes quite a while to calm down again.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Spinel thinks Amethio is this, at least initially.
  • Anywhere but Their Lips: Friede enjoys kissing Amethio's hands, and sometimes his forehead. Amethio wishes Friede would kiss him on his lips more, though.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Amethio assumes Friede's going to take advantage of him since he can't really defend himself. Friede's horrified by this assumption.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
    • Friede's "Why are you unable to accept the fact that your son is going to die?" to Gibeon.
    • Amethio's "Why can't I die NOW?" to Friede, when Friede confronts Amethio about his suicide attempt.
  • Arranged Marriage: Gibeon and his wife Tanzan. Neither of them wanted it, and Gibeon isn't attracted to women to begin with.
  • Attempted Rape: Spinel's grandfather almost raped him when Spinel was a child, but Spinel managed to run away at the last moment.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Gibeon and Tanzan, since it was an arranged marriage. Them having kids made things worse.
  • Awkward Father-Son Bonding Activity: Following Gibeon Taking A Level In Kindness, he and Amethio try to get to know each other and learn about one another. Since neither of them have any idea how to talk to each other, especially when it comes to small talk, their conversations are, at best, awkward, and, at worst, devolve into heated arguments.
  • Bad Mood Retreat: Later on, when Amethio is feeling scared or upset and wants to hide away from everything, he tends to try to hide under his bed sheets.
  • Bathtub Bonding: Friede bathes Amethio on multiple occasions once Amethio is unable to care for himself, some of which lead to this.
  • Bathtub Scene:
    • As stated above, Friede has to bathe Amethio frequently.
    • Gibeon has one that doubles as a breakdown.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Why Amethio falls in love with Friede. Friede's the only person other than Amethio's mother who's ever shown him genuine, unconditional kindness.
  • Big Fancy House: The Forscher home. Amethio thinks it's far too big.
  • Big "NO!": Amethio when he figures out that the gardener is Lucius — the man his father had an affair with a decade ago.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Amethio to Friede, frequently, since Friede often has to try to get Amethio to do things he doesn't want to do.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Lucius when Amethio tells him he's Gibeon Forscher's son.
  • Blame the Paramour: Tanzan openly blames Lucius for seducing Gibeon into the affair. This leads to both Spinel and Amethio believing it's Lucius's fault. The boys, however, still think Gibeon's extremely guilty.
  • Blaming the Victim: Gibeon makes Amethio think it's his fault that Tanzan left. Even though Amethio was five years old and all he did was tell her that he saw Gibeon in bed with his friend Lucius.
  • Bonding over Missing Parents: Amethio's mother died when he was eight and Friede's mother walked out on him and his father when Friede was five. They talk about the absence of their mothers multiple times.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Gibeon wets himself when he gets triggered by Amethio throwing water on him.
  • CPR: Clean, Pretty, Reliable: Averted. The first time Friede has to resuscitate Amethio, following Amethio's Interrupted Suicide, he's in a panic, and doesn't do it properly, so Amethio has to be rushed to the ICU. The second time, after Amethio has a medical emergency, Friede does do it properly, but it only works in stabilising Amethio — not in actually waking him up.
  • Calling the Old Man Out:
    • Amethio decides he's has enough of Gibeon's mistreatment and does this when Gibeon betrays Amethio by telling Friede something Amethio explicitly asked to keep secret from his doctor.
    • Spinel calls Gibeon out multiple times, too, once he's made aware of just how terribly Amethio's been treated by their father.
  • Central Theme: Staying true to yourself no matter how hard life gets, as well as remembering that love is what makes us human.
  • Cast Full of Gay:
    • Lampshaded by Amethio, who, after spending some time at the St Asagi General Hospital, works out that most of the staff who work in the children's ward seem to be LGBT. note
    • As it turns out, Amethio's family. Amethio is Not Straight (he thinks he's probably gay, but he's only ever loved one person (Friede), so he doesn't want to say for certain), Spinel is bisexual with a preference for men, Gibeon exclusively likes men (and is pretty sure he's homosexual) and Tanzan was dating a woman when she died. Also, while not part of the family itself, Zir and Conia, the two young servants who work for the Forschers, are both (coincidentally) trans. Zir is a trans man and Conia is a trans woman.
    • Lucius is openly queer. He doesn't want to overthink things, so he prefers using a general label for himself. All his high school friends were LGBT, too.
    • Minor characters: Spinel's friends Onyx note , Sango note  and Agate note  are all LGBT; Dot is asexual; Liko is bisexual (and probably prefers girls), and so on.
  • Chain of Harm: Amethio being abused by Gibeon was largely a result of Gibeon not coping with having been abused by his own parents for many years.
  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject: Gibeon has a tendency to do this.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The weird guy in the flower garden Amethio meets? He's Lucius, who went to high school with Gibeon. And also the man who Amethio's father had an affair with a decade ago and who Amethio sees as being responsible for his life going to hell.
  • Children Are Innocent: Amethio didn't fully understand what he saw when he walked in on Gibeon in bed with Lucius — but he knew that Lucius was in Mother's bed, and that was enough to upset him.
  • Christmas Episode: In which Friede discovers Amethio still believes in Santa... right as he's making a joke about how Amethio's too old for that.
Friede: We usually have a Christmas party with the kids! They love it!
    Amethio: That's stupid.
Friede: Aww, but it's a lot of fun! We exchange presents! Santa even comes by! Although you're way too old to still believe in Santa, haha. But even still, it'd be nice if you'd play along and pretend, yeah? For the sake of the kids.
    Amethio: ...What do you mean?
    Friede: Huh?
Amethio: About... About believing in Santa? And pretending...?
Friede: Er... Hold on. Do you think Santa's real?
Amethio: ...Why wouldn't Santa be real?
    Friede: Ah shit.
  • Comfort the Dying:
    • During Amethio's final days, leading up to his final moments, Friede is by Amethio's bedside almost constantly, and talks to Amethio even though he's not sure if Amethio is conscious or not.
    • Gibeon and Spinel take turns visiting Amethio too. Gibeon spends as much time as possible sitting with Amethio, while Spinel finds being alone with Amethio too uncomfortable, so he only stops by to say a brief hello from time to time. Gibeon might not be very good at comforting his son, but he tries to do so by reading books to Amethio and very awkwardly singing him lullabies.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Friede and Amethio do this with each other all the time.
  • Commonality Connection: Amethio and Gibeon find out they have similar tastes in fiction, and bond over that.
  • Connected All Along: Amethio and Lucius, the hospital gardener, although neither of them are aware. Gibeon had an affair with Lucius when Amethio was a young child, and Amethio walking in on them eventually led to his parents' divorce. Amethio has resented Lucius ever since, due to Lucius being a Karma Houdini in Amethio's mind.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Amethio meets a young man when he runs away from home as a kid after his parents get into a huge argument over Gibeon's affair. The man is Friede, who ends up being his doctor almost a decade later. Neither of them remember their Forgotten First Meeting (Amethio was too young, Friede was probably high).
  • Converse with the Unconscious: Friede with Amethio during the latter's final days of life. Gibeon questions Friede on this, to which Friede explains that while he's not sure if Amethio can hear him or not, he likes talking to his dying patients in order to offer them some kind of comfort in knowing that they're not alone.
  • Cooldown Hug: Friede gives several to Amethio when Amethio's either having a mental breakdown or is delirious from pain.
  • Cowardice Callout: During his confrontation with Lucius, Amethio calls him out on being a coward due to running away after Gibeon's affair with him was discovered and not facing any kind of punishment.
  • Cradle of Loneliness: Friede cradles the necklace he gave Amethio during their fake wedding ceremony after Amethio's death.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Amethio, Spinel and Gibeon have all suffered from different kinds of prolonged abuse and neglect.
  • Dark Fic: Pokemon Horizons is a children's anime. This fic is not for children.
  • Deadly Euphemism: Friede tends to use these around his youngest patients and their families.
  • Death Fic: About Amethio dying.
  • Death Is a Sad Thing: Amethio experiences this when Tanzan dies. He can't entirely comprehend what he's being told, but he's upset by the idea that he'll never see his mother again.
  • Death of a Child: Amethio, right at the end, by the people who still consider him a child. A lot of Friede's other patients, too.
  • Delirious Misidentification: Amethio, delirious with pain from a severe stomach ache, can tell there's someone in the room with him, and assumes it's Friede. All he can do is call Friede's name over and over and beg for help. Amethio can't work out why Friede won't help him — but it's because the person isn't Friede, it's Gibeon, who has never seen Amethio act so vulnerable before, and is startled by Amethio's behaviour.
  • Denied Food as Punishment: Gibeon punishes his sons like this quite frequently if they anger him enough. Since Gibeon himself was often punished in the same way, he knows how effective it is.
  • The Diaper Change: Amethio ends up having to wear diapers towards the end of his life. While changing them is nothing new for Friede, who deals with this as part of his job, it's extremely off-putting for Gibeon, who has never done it before. Granted, he also has traumatic reasons for not wanting to be in charge of his son's personal care.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Amethio dies while Friede is hugging him.
  • Dirty Coward: Friede sees Gibeon as this for how he treats Amethio. After Gibeon's Jerkass Realization, Gibeon agrees and sees himself as this too.
  • Disappointed in You:
    • Gibeon has said this to Amethio more than anything else.
    • Gibeon heard this from his father even more frequently.
  • Dispense with the Pleasantries: Amethio directly tells Friede not to bother wasting his time with any formalities during their first meeting.
  • The Disease That Shall Not Be Named: The name of the illness Amethio has isn't the point of the story, so it's never specified.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Basically any time Amethio does anything, he gets punished by Gibeon in this way. Turns out this happened to Gibeon too.
  • Domestic Abuse:
    • Gibeon emotionally abuses both his sons, but particularly Amethio.
    • Gibeon's parents both sexually and physically abused him, as well.
  • Downer Beginning: Friede gets a new patient, Amethio. Amethio has a terminal illness.
  • Downer Ending: Amethio dies from his terminal illness.
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: Friede kisses an unconscious Amethio a few times during Amethio's final days of his life.
  • Dysfunctional Family: The Forschers. Amethio is neglected and emotionally abused by his father Gibeon and emotionally and physically abused by his older brother Spinel. Spinel, in turn, is put under a lot of pressure by Gibeon. Gibeon himself never wanted to be a father. As for the boys' mother, Tanzan, she died when Amethio was eight, and a couple of years before that went through a very messy divorce with Gibeon. Due to Gibeon cheating on her with another man.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: Amethio refuses to eat in front of others. Eventually, he lets Friede see him eat, but not anybody else.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Friede with Amethio frequently, and he internally berates himself every single time he does it. He tries his best to pretend that he's not interested in Amethio, but unfortunately for Friede, he really does find the boy to be strikingly beauitful.
  • Embarrassing Damp Sheets: Amethio starts wetting the bed when his body gets weaker. He's extremely ashamed of it, despite Friede telling him that it's nothing to be worried about.
  • Embarrassing Hobby: Amethio likes reading gay fiction. Friede doesn't know why he thinks this is embarrassing, though. (Amethio mostly just doesn't want Gibeon to find out. Gibeon does eventually learn about Amethio's hobby, and he's not mad — he's more intrigued than anything).
  • Empty Bedroom Grieving: Amethio spends the last few days of his life at home in his own room. A few days after his death, Gibeon asks Friede if he'd like anything of Amethio's, and seeing the empty room, with most of Amethio's belongings sorted into boxes and storage containers, hits Friede hard.
  • Ending Memorial Service: First there's Amethio's funeral, which is small and very private, but there's also a memorial at his school.
  • Exact Words: Amethio pulls this with Friede a lot when he thinks Friede's broken his promises.
  • Family Business: The Forschers have a family business dating back generations. Amethio isn't sure quite what it's for, but it turns out it's a finance management agency. Gibeon later learns that the ACTUAL family business was a human trafficking ring, that was in operation until his father died and doesn't cope well with the revalation.
  • Find the Cure!: Friede attempts this, going out of his way to research Amethio's illness and contact world-renowned experts. However, they all tell him there's no way the illness can be cured.
  • First Love: Amethio experiences his first (and last) love with Friede.
  • Flashback Nightmare: Amethio and Gibeon both have a few of these involving their childhood traumas.
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: A deconstruction of this trope. Friede falls for Amethio the first time they meet, and the story deals with all the implications and issues surrounding a doctor being in love with his (underage) patient. Friede tries to keep his feelings hidden, but then Amethio confesses to Friede that he loves him, even though Amethio is fully aware that Friede would be risking his entire career if he was any kind of relationship with Amethio.
  • Fond Memories That Could Have Been: Friede laments not being able to spend more time with Amethio.
  • Forced Bath: Friede has to give Amethio a few of these.
  • Forceful Kiss: Amethio gives multiple to Friede when he thinks Friede's getting too cocky with him.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Amethio has a terminal illness. Guess what happens at the end? He dies.
  • Forgotten Birthday: Amethio hasn't had his birthday celebrated since before his mother died. Friede fixes this by throwing him a private party (he knows Amethio won't want to be the center of attention).
  • The Four Loves: Amethio craves familial love/affection, friendship, romantic love and, more than anything, unconditional love. Friede is unsure what exactly Amethio means when he says he "loves" Friede and isn't entirely convinced it's romantic love, but one of the other kinds of love. While Amethio is adamant it's romantic, he later admits it's probably some combination of several different kinds of love that he feels towards one of the only people in his life to ever be sincere with him.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Gibeon to Amethio when he's really, really mad.
  • Garden of Love: Friede and Amethio have a fake wedding ceremony in the hospital's flower garden.
  • The Generation Gap:
    • Brought up from time to time with Friede and Amethio. Even though they're only 12 years apart, they've had very different experiences growing up, especially in regards to technology. Friede is flabbergasted when Amethio says he's never owned a CD, and when asked if he has any books at home that he'd like to be brought to the hospital for him to read, Amethio explains that he only ever reads things on his phone (unless the book's only available in print). Friede's response is "Oh yeah, I guess everything is digital now, huh?".
    • To a greater extent, this comes up between Amethio and Gibeon when they're discussing sexuality, and Gibeon uses the term "homosexual" since it's the word he knows as being politically correct. Amethio, however, assumes he's being derogatory, as the term he knows as being politically correct is "gay". Eventually, after much arguing, the two of them realise it's a generational difference and that the language surrounding sexuality has simply evolved since Gibeon was a teenager. They then agree to stop discussing the issue entirely.
  • Get Out!: Amethio yells at Friede to get out of his room multiple times.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: Amethio, who could never get away with swearing at home or at school, says "crap" in front of Friede once and panics, thinking he's going to get in trouble. Friede just laughs at how purehearted he is.
  • Grave-Marking Scene: Friede takes Amethio to visit Tanzan's grave twice, and at the end of the story, Friede visits Amethio's grave. On the second visit, Spinel accompanies Friede and Amethio to see Tanzan, as it'll be Amethio's last time getting to visit her. While there, they meet Mireille, who turns out to have been dating Tanzan at the time of her death.
  • Groin Attack: Amethio may not be able to hurt Lucius that much when he lashes out of him, but he does manage to kick Lucius in the dick. Lucius feels like it's the least he deserves.
  • Happy-Ending Massage: Gibeon went to get a massage at the suggestion of his wife. The masseur was Lucius, his ex-boyfriend who he hadn't seen since high school over a decade prior. While intended to be a normal massage, Gibeon got aroused during it, and Lucius jokingly asked Gibeon if he'd "like that taken care of as part of the service"... only for Gibeon to agree to his proposal. Thus began their affair.
  • Hard Truth Aesop: Your regrets and your mistakes will follow you for life, and there's no magical way to come to terms with what you've done. Likewise, trauma cannot be automatically cured just because you accept what happened to you.
  • Hates Their Parent:
    • Amethio loathes Gibeon for having an affair and betraying Tanzan by doing so and for being emotionally abusive towards him his whole life. Spinel is also not very fond of Gibeon for similar reasons, as Gibeon hasn't treated him well, either.
    • Gibeon despises both of his parents for physically and sexually abusing him.
  • Head Pet: Friede likes doing this to his patients, including Amethio. Amethio initially hates the gesture, but over time, he ends up finding it rather soothing.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: In the most mundane sense of the trope possible, Gibeon realises at the end that this is the case, and that he wishes he understood it earlier in life.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: The Forschers. Gibeon is homosexual and Amethio likes men. Spinel is also bisexual, and Tanzan was dating a woman when she died.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: When Hamber announces that he can no longer support Gibeon following his boss's treatment of Amethio despite the latter's Attempted Suicide, he admits that he's rather disliked Gibeon ever since his affair with Lucius. But Hamber kept his mouth shut, since it was his job, and he knew Gibeon could ruin his life in an instant. However, Gibeon still being cruel towards Amethio despite his son's mental state is Hamber's breaking point.
  • Holding Hands: It takes Amethio a long time before he's comfortable with Friede holding his hands, but he regrets not letting Friede to it sooner — Friede's hands are large, warm, firm, calming and make Amethio feel secure. Later on, whenever Amethio is extremely distressed, Friede tries to first calm him down by gently holding his hands.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Lucius calls out Gibeon by saying he made the mistake of thinking Gibeon was kind when they were in high school.
  • Hospital Visit Hesitation: Spinel is unsure if he should keep visiting Amethio once he's mentally declining, even though the two have been getting along quite well up until that point, following Spinel's Jerkass Realization.
  • Hot Springs Episode: During winter, Friede takes Amethio to the hospital's therapeutic hot springs.
  • How Dad Met Mom: Gibeon tells Spinel and Amethio the story of his relationship with Tanzan after his Jerkass Realization. While the boys have always known their parents' marriage was an arranged one, they're quite surprised to learn that Gibeon and Tanzan had only met three times before their wedding day. According to Gibeon, their first meeting was rather brief, and he claims that Tanzan didn't seem to want to be there any more than Gibeon himself did.
  • I Am Not My Father:
    • Amethio insists he's not anything like Gibeon, and gets mad whenever he learns that he's actually pretty similar to his father when it comes to his ideals and core beliefs.
    • Gibeon was determined to be better than his father, but he ended up becoming abusive towards his sons due to being consumed by resentment.
  • I Can Change My Beloved: Friede is determined to make Amethio more happy, relaxed, and open, and doesn't realise just how monumental of a task that is initially.
  • I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: Friede accidentally ends up doing this to Amethio a few times, particularly when he's helping Amethio shower. Friede insists he doesn't mind, since Amethio's a teenager so Friede knows it doesn't really mean anything, but Amethio's extremely embarrassed by his reactions nonetheless.
  • I Didn't Tell You Because You'd Be Unhappy: Friede's excuse for not telling Amethio about his past. Amethio insists that he's mature enough to handle Friede's story, since he was okay with Gibeon's and Spinel's horrific tales, but Friede takes some convincing.
  • I Have No Son!: How Gibeon treats Amethio following Amethio telling both Hamber and Tanzan about Gibeon's affair with Lucius.
  • I Kiss Your Hand: Friede likes giving Amethio hand kisses, even with his gloves on.
  • I Miss Mom: Both Amethio and Spinel really, really miss Tanzan.
    • Amethio eventually admits to Friede just how much he misses her, and how desperately he wishes she was there to comfort him during his time in hospital.
    • Spinel, meanwhile, has always felt lost ever since Tanzan died, as he was very close to her, and looked up to her a lot. During one of his talks with Amethio, he tells Amethio as much, and Amethio admits that he, too, misses her deeply. Both of them then reminisce about her, and how kind and loving she was.
  • I Warned You:
    • Diana, the hospital director, to Friede when he starts to get too attached to Amethio.
    • Gibeon used to hear this from his father a lot.
  • I Wished You Were Dead: Gibeon ends up feeling incredibly guilty for spending most of Amethio's life wishing that he'd never existed.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Amethio with Friede eventually, but it takes a long time before he trusts Friede.
  • Ignored Expert: Gibeon ignores the warnings of the first doctor Amethio visits.
  • Immaturity Insult: Friede sometimes has to harshly remind Amethio that he's a kid. Amethio always fires back by saying that Friede's far less mature than Amethio himself is.
  • Incompatible Orientation: A large part of why Gibeon and Tanzan's arranged marriage was rocky was due to Gibeon being (very) secretly attracted to men and men only.
  • Inconvenient Attraction: Amethio is very annoyed by the fact that he has feelings for Friede, since he knows all the things wrong with their dynamic — and he's convinced he'll never be able to have Friede for himself.. Friede, likewise, wishes he wasn't attracted to Amethio... since Amethio's a teenager. And his patient.
  • Innocent Awkward Question: Roy asking Amethio how long he's in hospital for. Roy has no idea Amethio's terminally ill, and feels bad when Amethio bluntly tells him the truth.
  • Innocence Lost:
    • Five-year-old Amethio seeing Lucius in bed with Gibeon.
    • Spinel being sexually abused by his grandfather when he was ten.
    • Gibeon when he got kidnapped and raped by multiple strangers as a child.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Amethio thinks Friede likes him out of pity, and can't imagine why Friede would actually have any reason to love him. Friede's just insecure for legal reasons.
  • Insistent Terminology: Hamber is Gibeon's attendant. Not his servant or his slave, and definitely not his romantic partner.
  • Insult of Endearment: Amethio is sometimes serious when he calls Friede an idiot, but as the story goes on, he ends up mostly meaning it as this.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Friede is quite friendly with a few of his long-term patients. In particular, there's Liz, who was one of the first patients Friede ever looked after. Liz has long since been released from hospital, but keeps in contact with Friede.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: Amethio walked in on Lucius in bed with Gibeon when he was five. While he wasn't entirely sure what he saw at the time, when he confronts Lucius about it during the story, Lucius confirms that they were indeed having sex when Amethio entered the room.
  • Intimate Lotion Application: Friede helps Amethio apply lotion to the scars he inflicted on himself on his inner highs, which makes Amethio very self-conscious and fully aware of where Friede's touching him.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Amethio tries to strangle himself, only to be interrupted by Friede, who was alerted by the sudden spike in Amethio's heart rate monitor's readings.
  • Irrational Hatred: Pretty much everyone thinks Gibeon's hatred of Amethio is this. Gibeon ends up agreeing with them that he had absolutely no reason to put any blame on Amethio.
  • It Never Gets Any Easier: Gibeon asks Friede at one point how he's able to not only deal with so much death, but so much child death. Friede replies by saying that he's honestly not entirely sure himself, since it hurts deeply every time one of his patients dies, no matter how many hundreds of times it's happened. Gibeon then asks if Friede's ever thought of quitting his job, to which Friede responds with "Every single time it happens, actually. But if I don't do it, nobody will. Someone has to be there for those kids. Imagine if the family had to deal with it on their own. I can't put someone through that. So... I'll keep doing this job. Hopefully, one day, this role won't be needed anymore. That's all I can wish for."
  • It's All My Fault:
    • Amethio feels this way about what happened with his family, even though he was a child at the time things fell apart and it was all out of his hands.
    • Gibeon ends up feeling this way about Amethio's situation, despite the terminal illness being a random thing.
  • It's Not You, It's Me: Friede tries to turn Amethio down this way when Amethio confesses to him. It doesn't work.
  • Jailbait Taboo: Friede agonises over Amethio being a teenager. The only reason he ever does do anything with Amethio is that Amethio's dying, but even then, Friede sets some very strict boundaries and isn't comfortable being intimate with Amethio beyond kissing him.
  • Jar Potty: Amethio absolutely refuses to use a bedpan for as long as he can, despite it being the easy solution to some of his ongoing incontinence issues.
  • Kirk Summation: Friede gives one to Gibeon, who is far less than amused. Friede's summation is also wildly inaccurate.
  • LGBT Awakening: Falling in love with Friede is what makes Amethio realise he likes men.
  • Last Kiss: Firede and Amethio have one during the last time Friede is absolutely sure Amethio is conscious.
  • Last Wish Marriage: While far from an actual marriage, Friede and Amethio have a fake wedding in the hospital's flower garden, after Friede learns that Amethio wanted to be a husband who could make Gibeon regret how he treated his own spouse.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Gibeon and Amethio get into an argument over sexual identity labels once they try to learn more about each other after Gibeon's Jerkass Realization — specifically, Gibeon using the word "homosexual" to describe Amethio, who thinks Gibeon's being derogatory, but it's the term Gibeon thinks is politically correct. Amethio, meanwhile, isn't sure what label he'd use, but he knows he prefers "gay" over "homosexual", which turns out to be a word Gibeon finds very uncomfortable. It ends up being a massive misunderstanding due to their generation gap, and after they figure this out, Gibeon says to Amethio that it's probably best if they don't discuss such things in the future. Amethio agrees.
  • Lies to Children: Friede sometimes has to come up with ways of covering up the harshness of terminal illnesses and death for his young patients. At times, this involves lying to them.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Once Gibeon and Amethio reconcile and start trying to learn about each other, Amethio's extremely disappointed to learn that, despite spending most of his life trying to be different to Gibeon, he's actually quite similar to his father in some aspects, and that they share similar core beliefs. When he admits his frustrations to Gibeon, Gibeon responds by reassuring Amethio that just because they have similar tastes in things note  and share similar views on certain topics note , it doesn't mean Amethio's made the same pathetic life choices as Gibeon (to which Amethio reminds Gibeon that he hasn't exactly been given much of a chance TO make any life choices, pathetic or otherwise). Also doubles as a case of Like Father, Unlike Son and Not So Similar.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: As above, Gibeon insists that he and Amethio aren't actually as similar as Amethio believes.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: Spinel is highly amused when he finds out Amethio likes Friede, as to him, Friede is rather similar to Lucius.
  • Littlest Cancer Patient: Friede deals with a large amount of these as part of his job.
  • Living Emotional Crutch:
    • Friede becomes this for Amethio, despite multiple warnings from his superiors that he absolutely should NOT do this for the sake of his own mental well-being.
    • Lucius for Gibeon. Gibeon thought he was over it even though part of him occasionally missed Lucius. And then they met again after a decade, and Gibeon immediately realised just how much happier he was around his ex-boyfriend.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: Gibeon with Tanzan on their wedding night, due to a combination of nerves, exhaustion and him not being attracted to women. He does feel guilty about it, though, since Tanzan tried her best to pleasure him. (Eventually they do have sex successfully (and have two children), but it takes Gibeon having to pretend that his wife is a man for it to work.)
  • Lonely Funeral: While the school memoral has a large audience, the private funeral Amethio's family holds for him has only 6 people in attendance note .
  • Loud Sleeper Gag: Amethio discovers that Friede is this when he spends a weekend at Friede's apartment.
  • Love at First Sight: Friede is captivated by Amethio from their first meeting. He tells himself that it's inappropriate and attempts to shut down his feelings, but he's unsuccessful.
  • Love Hurts: Amethio's love for Friede is characterized as being very emotionally painful and like he's suffocating. He wonders if there's something wrong with him, since he's only ever heard of love being a happy, joyous thing.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Gibeon poisoning his parents, which he did as a last-ditch effort to stop his father from sexually abusing a young Spinel.
  • Meaningful Name: The surnames, being fic-original:
    • "Valiente" is Spanish for "Brave", referencing the Brave Asagi note  from the anime.
    • "Forscher" is German for "Explorer", referencing the villainous organisation.
    • The other surnames are all nods to the characters, too.
  • Mental Health Recovery Arc:
    • Friede tries to invoke this multiple times with Amethio, but keeps being reminded that he's not Amethio's therapist.
    • Gibeon goes through the start of facing up to his trauma and mental health issues and while there's no actual recovery, the story makes a point of saying that even acknowledging that you need help is a very important step.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Gibeon always blames Amethio for things that are in no way his fault.
  • The Missus and the Ex: Lucius used to visit the Forschers' house quite frequently, and got along with Tanzan. The only reason Lucius was there was to have sex with Gibeon, Tanzan's husband.
  • Mistakes Are Not the End of the World: Friede has to repeatedly remind Amethio that this is the case, especially with Amethio's deteriorating health meaning he's not in complete control of his body.
  • Modern AU Fic: With no Pokemon.
  • Moment of Weakness: Amethio has a few around Friede, and they increase as he gets sicker.
  • Moving Beyond Bereavement: Friede helps Amethio come to terms with the death of his mother Tanzan, since Amethio has never been given any kind of closure in regards to her sudden, unexplained death.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Amethio when he splashes water on Gibeon in a fit of rage, and his actions cause his father to scream and pass out due to Amethio triggering Gibeon's biggest trauma.
    • Gibeon when he realises just how terribly he's treated his sons, especially Amethio.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: How Spinel and Amethio both feel about Tanzan's sudden death.
  • "No More Holding Back" Speech: Amethio's letter to Gibeon is this, even though Gibeon doesn't read it until after Amethio's death.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Amethio feels like Friede lacks any. He's a doctor, though, so it's his job — as Friede points out.
  • Nocturnal Emission:
    • Amethio has these a couple of times, which make him feel disgusting about himself. He tries to cover them up, but Friede's response is simply "I was a teenage boy once too, y'know..."
    • Gibeon always tried to hide his, since his punishment was having his mother clean him up. In a very inappropriate way.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Friede to Gibeon about his relationship with Amethio when Gibeon questions just how close Friede seems to be to his patient. Too bad he's lying.
  • Obviously Not Fine:
    • Amethio will insist he's fine no matter the situation, even when he's about to pass out from pain or is throwing up.
    • Gibeon does the same thing, to an even more extreme degree.
  • Official Couple: Friede/Amethio and Lucius/Gibeon.
  • Oh, and X Dies: Amethio dies.
  • Old Money: The Forschers, who got their wealth by running a human trafficking ring that exploited children.
  • One Head Taller: Friede is about a head and a quarter taller than Amethio.
  • The One Thing I Don't Hate About You: Spinel admits that he's jealous of Amethio's ability to stay true to himself and his beliefs no matter what the circumstances, and thinks it's a good trait to have. Amethio, meanwhile, has always admired Spinel's charisma, and tells his brother that he used to want to be as charming as him.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Gibeon is rather horrified when he realises he's outlived Amethio.
  • Parental Incest: Gibeon is a victim of this. Both his father and his mother sexually abused him from when he was a young child until he turned eighteen.
  • Parental Issues: Amethio (both parents — Gibeon's emotional abuse/neglect and Tanzan's death), Spinel (mostly Tanzan dying), and Gibeon (sexually abused by both parents), Friede (his mother left when he was five and his father killed himself when Friede was thirteen), Lucius (never knew his father, and being a Child by Rape makes him feel awkward when he's around his mother), amongst others.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Gibeon towards Amethio's ongoing and escalating health issues. He doesn't think there's anything wrong with Amethio until Amethio ends up hospitalised... a second time, and is given his terminal diagnosis.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: When Gibeon and Spinel first visit Amethio after he has a catheter put in, Spinel asks what the bag is for. Friede explains, giving some unnecessary details along the way, which leads to Spinel making a rather inappropriate joke — forgetting that Gibeon is in the room.
    Spinel: Isn't it... painful?
Friede: It usually isn't. But I hear it can be a bit uncomfortable if you're erect.
Spinel: That uh... would certainly be something. [Glances at Amethio] Is this true? Surely you'd know the answer by now.
Amethio: [Completely red in the face] Can we not talk about this? Father's sitting right there!
Spinel: Er... Sorry, Father! I didn't really mean to...
Gibeon: Fools! As if I am unaware of what an erection is. How in the world do you think the two of you exist?
    Spinel & Amethio: [Embarrassed] ...Oh.
Friede: We're all men! Pretty sure we all know about erections in here. They happen! Even to someone like your father, as hard as it is to imagine!
Amethio: Can we please not talk about this?! I'd rather NOT imagine anything to do with Father and... that stuff!
Spinel: Ugh. I agree. Let's... Let's move on to something a bit less nauseating.
  • Parental Substitute: Friede's seen as this by some of the kids he cares for, especially the ones whose families don't visit very often. He initially assumes this is what Amethio feels towards him, but Amethio insists the love he has for Friede is romantic.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Spinel got into an argument with Tanzan the last time he spoke with her before she died, and has always felt guilty about it.
  • Piggyback Cute: Friede carries Amethio back from the flower garden like this once.
  • Plot-Inciting Infidelity: Gibeon having an affair with Lucius is the start of Amethio's lifelong traumas, since he's the one who walks in on them in bed together.
  • Pool Scene: Friede takes Amethio to the hospital pool for some light exercise. Amethio doesn't enjoy himself very much, as he's shy about his body.
  • Post-Kiss Catatonia: Friede when Amethio kisses him the first time. He's so caught off guard that he stands there for several moments in shock while Amethio smirks at him triumphantly.
  • Post-Treatment Lollipop: Friede is so used to doing this with his younger patients that he tries bribing Amethio with one — only for Amethio to completely misunderstand what Friede means.
Friede: If you behave and let me treat you, you can have a lollipop!
Amethio: ...Is that some kind of disgusting euphamism?
Friede: F-For what? I really was just offering you a lollipop, dude. [Pulls one out of his pocket]
    Amethio: ...Oh. You weren't kidding.
Friede: What did you think I meant?
    Amethio: N-Never mind...
  • Potty Emergency: Amethio has several. It's a sign his body is starting to fail on him.
  • Potty Failure: Amethio, multiple times. He refuses to admit that he needs help with personal care and keeps denying any kind of assistance. One night, he falls over in the hallway while trying to make it to the bathroom. He can't get back up, and there's nobody around to rescue him.
  • The Power of Love: A mundane variant, but it's what gives people hope to keep going. Friede helps draws this out of Amethio, and Gibeon eventually realises that love is the most important thing.
  • Pride Parade: Of a kind. The Saint Asagi General Hospital hosts multiple inclusivity events throughout its ground across the year, including LGBT pride celebrations. While not a parade, it's still about embracing your sexuality and gender identity, and even if you're not LGBT you're still encouraged to show your support. Amethio is initially very wary of attending any, as he's worried his father will get mad at him for it, but Friede informs him that one of the hospital's main policies is treating everyone equally, regardless of identity, race, religion, or anything else, and any patient at the hospital has to agree to that policy if they are to receive treatment. If the patient is underage, then their guardian(s) have to agree. Which means that Gibeon, essentially, is fully aware that the hospital is inclusive, and if he was against that, he would never have let Amethio be under the hospital's care to begin with.
  • Primal Scene: Amethio walked in on his father in bed with Lucius when he was five. At the time, he was too horrified by the idea that someone other than his mother was in bed with his father that he didn't really take note of what they were doing. When he confronts Lucius about it during the story, he asks Lucius if they were having sex at the time Amethio entered the room, and Lucius admits that yes, they were.
  • Questionable Consent: Friede's constantly worried about his relationship with Amethio because he's scared he's somehow forcing Amethio to do things, and since Amethio's underage, it makes Friede aware their relationship is a crime. But it's okay because Amethio's the one who started things and Amethio wants to kiss Friede and everything... right?
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Discussed. While Gibeon and Spinel may have treated Amethio atrociously, this trope is in play with Spinel and Amethio's grandparents, who sexually abused Gibeon when he was young. Spinel was also sexually abused by their grandfather as a child. Amethio even lampshades this, by commenting that he feels as though he shouldn't complain about what he's been through, since at the very least, he was never sexually abused. Friede is quick to point out that you can't compare abuse, and that everyone's trauma is legitimate and weighs on the person in the same horrific ways.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": Amethio when Friede tells him he needs to start wearing diapers. Amethio isn't having any of it.
  • "The Reason I Suck" Speech:
    • Amethio has a breakdown and admits all of his insecurities to Friede, essentially going over all the reasons why he thinks he's a bad person. Friede vehemently disagrees with Amethio's self-assessment.
    • Gibeon's Somber Backstory Revelation morphs into this. After explaining how he ended up the way he did to Amethio and Spinel, Gibeon gives them a list of what he considers to be all his mistakes. Amethio is surprised by how thorough the list is, but Spinel points out a few things that Gibeon missed.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Amethio tries to deliver one to Gibeon following Gibeon still treating him terribly even after his Attmpted Suicide, but he finds it impossible to put his emotions into words. Friede then suggests that Amethio writes Gibeon a letter, which Amethio does end up doing. It's a long, scathing letter detailing all the reasons why he hates his father, full of disgust and anger — but Gibeon doesn't read it until after Amethio's death, by which point Amethio doesn't hate Gibeon quite as much.
  • Reincarnation Romance: Discussed. Friede admits to Amethio that he wishes they'll be this in their next life. Amethio thinks he's talking nonsense, but secretly he's hoping for the same thing. Not that he believes in reincarnation.
  • Reformed, but Rejected: Amethio has trouble forgiving Gibeon and Spinel after the two of them admit that they treated him terribly and apologise to him. While he agrees to start their relationships over, he finds it hard to open up to either of them or trust them at all. By the end of his life, he doesn't hate them nearly as much as he once did, but he never truly forgives them for abusing him for most of his life.
  • Rejected Apology: Amethio doesn't accept Spinel's apology for his bullying, although he eventually agrees to get to know his older brother a bit, and they do somewhat repair their relationship.
  • Related Differently in the Adaptation: Gibeon being Amethio's father and Spinel being his brother (and Gibeon's older son), Diana being Lucius's cousin, Lucca's father being Hamber...
  • Relationship Upgrade: Friede and Amethio. Amethio confesses to Friede and tells Friede he has romantic feelings for him. Friede initially tries to reject Amethio on the basis that Amethio's underage, but he realises that Amethio's genuine and after much internal debate, agrees to be Amethio's boyfriend — but only in secret. And he's adamant that they cannot do anything physical beyond kissing.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Friede pulls this a couple of times with his care for Amethio when the latter has a medical emergency. Nobody is happy with Friede for doing so.
  • Secret Relationship:
    • Friede and Amethio. Friede's terrified of someone finding out and his career being ruined, so they're only dating in theory. Amethio understands, but is upset.
    • Lucius and Gibeon's secret relationship as adults, which also doubled as an affair on Gibeon's part.
  • Secret Room: There's one in the Forschers' house. It was used for photoshoots by Gibeon's father and his friends. Highly illegal photoshoots of children. That Gibeon was a part of (and he suppressed the memories of it all, until investigators contacted him and asked to look through the house for evidence of a human trafficking ring).
  • Self-Harm: Amethio inflicts cuts on his inner thighs by using a pair of scissors he stole from Friede.
  • Self-Made Orphan: He was an adult when he killed his parents, but Gibeon poisoned them when Spinel admitted that his grandfather was sexually abusing him.
  • Sex with the Ex: Gibeon's affair with Lucius amounted to this. They secretly dated each other in high school and broke up when Lucius graduated. A decade later, they coincidentally meet again when Gibeon goes to get a massage — the masseur turns out to be Lucius. Seeing each other for the first time in years makes things rather awkward, especially when Gibeon gets erect during his massage. Lucius joking asks Gibeon if he'd like it taken care of as part of the service, and Gibeon agrees. This made the two realise they still had feelings for each other, and was thus the beginning of Gibeon's affair with his ex-boyfriend.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat:
    • The Forscher family, while not aristocrats, are rather wealthy and also rather sheltered. Amethio is ignorant of how a lot of the world works, and Friede is taken aback by the everyday things he's unfamiliar with. Friede, who is from a lower-class family, teaches Amethio a lot about society during their short time together.
    • Gibeon learned a lot about the world through dating Lucius, who, like Friede, is from a poor background. Despite this, he went on to enforce this trope on his sons, although as they began to grow up, Gibeon realised they would probably learn about society's horrors on their own, and that he was most likely fighting a losing battle in keeping them away from the internet, so he relaxed somewhat.
  • Shower Scene: A few where Friede helps Amethio shower. Amethio is usually apprehensive, but as time goes on, he realises he has no choice but to let Friede assist him.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Gibeon to Friede on the few occasions Friede calls him out on his treatment of Amethio.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Friede essentially says this to Gibeon when Gibeon tries to tell Friede how to do his job while simultaneously insulting Amethio.
  • Sleazy Photoshoot: This is how the Forscher family really made their money: sleazy photoshoots of children. Gibeon was part of them when he was very young due to his father running the show, and has since repressed all memories of said photoshoots. However, he gets reminded of them when investigators come to his house and enquire about his father.
  • So Proud of You: Amethio just wants to hear Gibeon say this to him more than anything else in the world. The first time Gibeon feels proud of Amethio is after Amethio's death.
  • Somber Backstory Revelation:
    • When explaining his past to his sons, Gibeon talks about all the abuse he suffered when he was younger in this manner, almost as if it didn't actually happen to him.
    • Friede telling Amethio about his father's suicide is done this way too.
  • Spit Take: Friede does these a couple of times when one of his colleagues makes a joke about how he interacts with Amethio, and Friede has to quickly act like they're not actually correct.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers:
    • Friede and Amethio, what with Friede being an adult and Amethio's doctor, and Amethio being a teenager with a terminal illness. While they do enter a sort-of relationship, it's very secretive, and they can't really do much due to the circumstances. Amethio also dies only a year and a half after Friede meets him, so there's that, too.
    • Lucius and Gibeon, due to their class difference and Gibeon's family, who would never approve of their son dating another man.
  • Stargazing Scene: During the weekend Amethio stays over at Friede's apartment, they sit out on the balcony and watch the stars for a while. Friede's surprised to learn that Amethio knows several of the constellations, which Amethio says is due to having a very slight interest in astronomy.
  • Suicide Dare: Spinel used to frequently give these to Amethio.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Friede when Gibeon says Amethio probably feels safe around Friede because Friede reminds Amethio of his mother. Friede's actually Amethio's boyfriend, but he doesn't want Gibeon to find out.
  • Sympathetic P.O.V.: Much later on, the story switches to Gibeon's POV. While it's not intended to excuse his actions, it still humanises him and explains some of his inner turmoils.
  • Take Off Your Clothes: Friede to Amethio for a medical checkup. Amethio is disgusted by the wording, and Friede doesn't see what's wrong with it until Amethio spells it out for him.
  • The Talk: At one point, Friede half-jokingly asks Amethio if he ever had sex education in school. Amethio replies that yes, he did indeed, and he's aware of how it all works. Given that Gibeon and Spinel are in the room, Amethio feels rather embarrassed that Friede assumes he doesn't know about sex, but Friede insists he was "just making sure".
  • Talking to the Dead:
    • When visiting Tanzan's grave the first time, Amethio awkwardly introduces Friede to her. Friede then takes over and talks directly to the grave, as if Tanzan herself were listening. He goes on to explain who he is, and tells Tanzan that Amethio's incredibly brave and a fighter, and that she raised an extremely compassionate and kind son with the little time she had together with him.
    • On the second visit, Amethio and Spinel both talk to Tanzan. Spinel asks her to forgive him for how he treated his brother, and Amethio himself apologises to Tanzan for making her wait so long for him to reach her.
  • There Is No Cure: Amethio's illness. Further driven home when Friede spends about a month doing his own research and contacting experts around the world in the hope that someone out there might be able to help. Essentially, he keeps being told that there's no possible way to cure the illness whatsoever.
  • There Is Only One Bed: Friede lives in a one-bedroom apartment, with a single bed in it. When Amethio stays over for a night, this causes some initial worry on Amethio's part, but Friede tells Amethio he'll just sleep on the couch and Amethio can have the bed. Amethio's lowkey disappointed.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Hamber to Gibeon after Gibeon continues to treat Amethio poorly following the latter's Attempted Suicide.
  • Title Drop: During Gibeon's speech at Amethio's school memorial. "Never, ever forget that, no matter what, love is always shining within you."
  • Troubled, but Cute: Exactly how Friede sees Amethio. He doesn't realise just how troubled Amethio actually is initially, however...
  • Unbroken Vigil:
    • During the last few days of Amethio's life, when he's unconscious (or, at least, not entirely lucid), Friede sits at his bedside constantly, only leaving for bathroom breaks or a short nap.
    • Gibeon makes sure to visit Amethio multiple times a day, too.
  • Uncomfortable Elevator Moment: Friede and Gibeon have one when Gibeon comes to see Amethio after his Attempted Suicide. This is before Gibeon starts being nice to Amethio, and Friede had recently called Gibeon out on his parenting, so things are extremely awkward for a couple of minutes between them.
  • Undressing the Unconscious:
    • Friede has to do this with Amethio on multiple occasions as his doctor.
    • Also happens to Gibeon when he passes out after Amethio splashes water on him. Gibeon's disgusted that someone changed him into a hospital gown, despite his clothes being wet.
  • Unequal Pairing: Friede and Amethio, which is why it causes anguish for both of them.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Amethio when he realises that the man he met in the garden is Lucius, who had an affair with his father a decade ago.
  • Watching the Sunset: Friede is able to take Amethio out of the hospital grounds for a day (with Hamber there to transport them). Amethio isn't sure where he wants to go, so Friede takes him to one of his favourite spots: a secluded lake atop a hill that reflects the sunset off the water's surface in a breathtaking way. Amethio ends up agreeing with Friede's assessment — the sunset on the lake is indeed beautiful.
  • Water Source Tampering: Gibeon killed his parents by poisoning their water supply.
  • Wham Line: "Your grandfather was an incestuous pedophile. I... I know this first-hand."
  • What Is This Feeling?: Amethio when he develops his crush on Friede and starts feeling uncomfortable around Friede all of a sudden.
  • When He Smiles: Amethio smiles for the first time when he and Friede hold a fake wedding ceremony and Friede gives Amethio a necklace. Amethio gives Friede a genuinely happy, loving smile, that Friede finds gorgeous.
  • Why Can't I Hate You?: Amethio feels this way towards Gibeon and Spinel after learning about their abuse-filled pasts. In particular, Amethio struggles to understand why he feels sympathy towards two people he's spent most of his life loathing. Friede helps him understand that he can have sympathy for people he hates, and that the traumas that his father and his brother went through don't mean they're suddenly absolved of what they did to Amethio himself.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Gibeon's father physically abused Gibeon when he was a child and was also a pedophile.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Friede keeps trying to convince Amethio of this. He eventually gets through to Amethio after a lot of perseverance.
  • You Did Everything You Could: Gibeon and Spinel both say this to Friede after Amethio's death. Friede knows this, but still feels like he should've done more.
  • Your Worst Memory: Gibeon gets triggered when Amethio angrily pours a jar of water all over him, which causes Gibeon to recall a memory he's tried all his life to forget: his own father doing the same... except with boiling water — which led to Gibeon ending up with a giant burn scar on his back. Due to having to confront his biggest trauma, Gibeon is forced to take a long, hard look at himself and his life, and he eventually realises that he's been a horrible father to both Spinel and Amethio. This prompts him to tell his sons what happened to him (though he does take some convincing that Amethio is old enough to handle the subject matters) and attempt to apologise to them — without making any excuses for himself in the process. His sons don't forgive him, especially not Amethio, although Gibeon and Amethio to agree that they should start their relationship over from scratch and attempt to get to know each other before Amethio dies.

Lucius/Gibeon High School AU Tropes (Past)
Tropes that apply only to Lucius and Gibeon's high school years. For tropes that continue to apply to the characters/ships from this setting, please see the above hospital AU folder.

NOTE: As this AU is entirely about Lucius and Gibeon's (eventual) romantic relationship, basic tropes about their dynamic are unmarked.
  • Absurdly Powerful Student Council: Ginkgo High's student council. Lucius was the president, and Gibeon was the vice president for two years, as he was a year behind Lucius, and he ended up staying on to help the president in his final year of school as well.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Lucius and Gibeon call each other "Gibe" and "Luci" when they're alone once they start dating. Gibeon thinks it's embarrassing, but he doesn't actually mind it.
  • Anti-Humor: How Gibeon usually replies to Lucius's jokes. Lucius finds it charming.
  • Aroused by Their Voice: Lucius thinks Gibeon's deep voice is really hot.
  • Bad Date: Lucius and Gibeon go out for lunch. Gibeon's uncomfortable the entire time and refuses to eat anything, souring Lucius's mood. Turns out Gibeon was badly abused the night before, and his injuries are making him feel terrible.
  • Bathroom Control: One of the many ways that Gibeon's father punishes him for being disobedient.
  • Bathtub Bonding: A twisted example: Gibeon's mother purposefully invokes this by not only bathing with her teenage son, but also cleaning him, since she doesn't trust that he'll actually properly bathe himself. See below as well.
  • Bathtub Scene: Lucius takes a bath when he ends up staying the night at Gibeon's unexpectedly. While sorting through his thoughts, he's joined in the bath... by Gibeon's mother, who assumed it was her son in there. Lucius knows there's something weird going on, but he's too confused to say anything. (Turns out that Gibeon's being sexually abused by his mother, who insists she normally bathes with her son as a way to "monitor" him. Lucius's rather disgusted when he eventually learns this.)
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Why Gibeon falls in love with Lucius.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Gibeon may end up as the vice president of the student council, but he does all of the work for Lucius — who's the actual student council president.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Lucius and Gibeon, at least initially.
  • Blunt "Yes": Gibeon to Lucius, frequently, including when Gibeon admits that he's romantically interested in Lucius.
Lucius: So this entire time you've thought I was stupid, right?
    Gibeon: Yes.
Lucius: And yet you're saying you like me. You're telling me you have feelings for me even though I'm stupid?
Gibeon: [Sigh] Yes. That's exactly what I'm saying. That you're stupid. And that I fancy you. Is that a satisfactory answer?
    Lucius: [Smirk] Yes.
  • Bully Hunter: Gibeon goes out of his way to make sure bullies got punished, and is mad the school won't do more about preventing bullying. See Bullying the Disabled below.
  • Bullying the Disabled: Gibeon always tried to put a stop to this, and would get extremely frustrated whenever the school didn't take him seriously. Once he became the vice president of the student council, he, along with president Lucius, made sure to crack down on bullying in general, but especially towards those with disabilities.
  • Caught in the Rain: Lucius and Gibeon while on a date in town. They end up at Lucius's apartment, since Gibeon lives on the other side of the city.
  • Closed Door Rapport: Happens between Lucius and Gibeon, with Gibeon locking himself in the student council room and Lucius trying to calm him down.
  • Closet Key: Lucius is this for Gibeon.
  • Devoted to You: Gibeon to Lucius. As an adult, Gibeon thinks this was his biggest mistake in life.
  • Dialogue Reversal: Lucius and Gibeon repeatedly do this with each other. Lucius does it out of affection; Gibeon does it when he's annoyed.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Lucius purposefully invokes this to distract Gibeon on multiple occasions. Gibeon doesn't realise he's doing it intentionally.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Gibeon whenever he agrees with Lucius, which doesn't happen very often.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: Gibeon, until Lucius befriends him and forces Gibeon to eat lunch with him.
  • Elevator Going Down: Lucius teases Gibeon by giving him a handjob during a long elevator ride. Gibeon is less than impressed.
  • Elopement: Gibeon pleads with Lucius to elope with him on Lucius's graduation day. Lucius refuses.
  • Emotions vs. Stoicism: Lucius is rather open with his emotions, while Gibeon is (intentionally) stoic and logical.
  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: Lucius is the gleeful one and Gibeon is the grumpy one.
  • Holding in Laughter: Lucius does this around Gibeon frequently because of Gibeon's unintentionally hilarious responses to things.
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: A very mild version, but Lucius is drawn to Gibeon because Gibeon's the one person who doesn't put him on a pedestal.
  • The "I Love You" Stigma: Gibeon prefers expressing his love with his actions rather than through his words, but he does also find it really awkward to actually say "I love you" out loud.
  • I "Uh" You, Too: Gibeon doesn't know how to say "I love you" to Lucius, at all, and will often opt for more subtle lines. Lucius (who openly tells Gibeon how he feels at any given opportunity) is aware Gibeon finds it all a bit awkward, so he doesn't mind, and just goes along with it.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Lucius with Gibeon, and part of the reason why he refuses to let Gibeon elope with him when he graduates. Too bad it backfires spectacularly.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Gibeon with Lucius, who otherwise hates any kind of physical touching, let alone intimacy.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Lucius towards Gibeon once he learns just how wealthy Gibeon is. He starts to fear that Gibeon will hate him if he finds out he's from a much less well-off background.
  • Interrupted Kiss: Lucius and Gibeon, multiple times. As pointed out by the latter, they probably should stop kissing at school.
  • LGBT Awakening: Gibeon realises that he's attracted to men following Lucius's confession to him. Gibeon had never considered that liking men was a possibility, and he feels rather stupid because of that. Gibeon struggles with realising he's sexually attracted to men, too, due to his father's sexual abuse, and is terrified that it means he's a predator. Eventually, however, Gibeon realises that his father's abuse has no relation to his sexuality.
  • "Last Day of School" Plot: Lucius's last day of school, in which Gibeon begs Lucius to elope with him. Lucius rejects Gibeon's pleas.
  • Leaving You to Find Myself: Essentially why Lucius says no to eloping with Gibeon and leaves to travel the world once he graduates high school.
  • Little "No": Lucius when he works out that Gibeon is being sexually abused by his parents.
  • Locked in a Room: Happens to Lucius and Gibeon. While looking through archives after school for student council work, they get locked in the storage room by the janitor. It take several hours for them to be rescued, during which Gibeon almost has a panic attack over being in a dark, confined space.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: Lucius successfully makes Gibeon a Loner-Turned-Boyfriend.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: In some ways, Lucius is a male version of this for Gibeon.
  • Moment of Weakness: Gibeon displaying vulnerability in front of Lucius is part of what makes Lucius attracted to him in the first place.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Lucius with Gibeon. Gibeon repeatedly points this out.
  • Odd Friendship: Gibeon and Lucius are seen as this by their schoolmates.
  • Only Friend: Lucius for Gibeon. Until they become boyfriends.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Gibeon to Lucius the day Lucius graduates high school, which is the day they agreed to break up when they started their relationship. Lucius doesn't budge on his side of the deal.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: Gibeon to Lucius when he's forced to spend the night at Lucius's apartment due to a storm. Lucius claims he's usually just in his underwear if he's at home alone. Gibeon finds this unsettling.
  • Potty Emergency: Both Gibeon and Lucius when they're locked in the storage room together. Neither of them are happy about it.
  • Potty Failure: They were locked in that room for quite some time.
  • The Prom Plot: Lucius makes Gibeon attend the school dance as part of his group. Gibeon is miserable the entire time, but he has to admit to himself that watching Lucius enjoy himself isn't so bad.
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: Lucius's friends joke that Lucius and Gibeon's relationship is this. What they don't know is that the two are, in fact, dating.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: A frequent occurrence between Lucius and Gibeon. Gibeon just refuses to answer rhetorical questions in a rhetorical way.
  • Secret Relationship: Lucius and Gibeon. The only people who end up finding out are Lucius's mother and Volo of the school's newspaper department, who surprisingly agrees to keep their relationship a secret — if Lucius and Gibeon give him special privileges around the school.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Lucius's mother is very supportive of her son being together with Gibeon. Despite Lucius's attempts to hide their relationship, she sees right through him.
    • Volo is convinced Lucius and Gibeon are dating, and thinks the two make a very good couple.
  • Somber Backstory Revelation: Gibeon tries doing this with Lucius about the scar on his back, but Lucius's response is to laugh at how absurdly fucked up the situation is, so Gibeon stops telling his story and from then on refuses to open up to anybody.
  • Sorry to Interrupt: Volo comes across Lucius and Gibeon flirting and interrupts them like this.
  • Swivel-Chair Antics: Lucius's excited there's a swivel chair in the student council room. Gibeon warns him against spinning around too fast in it, but Lucius ignores him, and promptly flies off.
  • Unequal Pairing: Lucius and Gibeon. It's a big reason why their relationship is a secret.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: Gibeon with Lucius. Although Lucius is only "wild" by Gibeon's very conservative standards.
  • Water Guns and Balloons: Lucius and his friends organize a water balloon fight on a hot summer day during lunch break. Gibeon goes to break the event up, since it violates several school rules, but accidentally gets caught in the crossfire and soaked by Ray and Kiri. Because being splashed with water is a trigger for Gibeon, this causes him to collapse — in front of a large number of students. Lucius manages to cover for him and convinces everyone that Gibeon's simply suffering from heatstroke. Before Lucius carries Gibeon to the school infirmary, he asks his friends to make sure things don't get out of hand. The next day, Lucius and his friends apologise to Gibeon, but Gibeon insists his collapse had nothing to do with them (Lucius suspects otherwise, however).
  • What Does She See in Him?: Lucius's friends cannot understand why Lucius is infatuated with Gibeon.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Gibeon towards Lucius, who can't work out that what he's feeling is love.
