Shoku (Shu) Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shoku.png

One of the Three Kingdoms, also known as the Hongou Faction in the first game and Ryuu Faction in the rest of the series. Unlike Gi and Go, Shoku isn't truly a kingdom per se but a large alliance of several warlords led by Ryuubi Gentoku, an idealistic woman who dreams of peace and cohabitation even as China is split between numerous provinces and plagued by civil war. Impressed by her naive but powerful ideals, these warlords all pledged loyalty to her as their Queen, even though Ryuubi herself doesn't like that title.

    In General
  • The Alliance: Shoku in itself isn't technically a kingdom, but an alliance of smaller autonomous countries who willingly chose to follow Kazuto/Ryuubi as their leading voice.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Enemies captured by Shoku usually end up as allies, thanks to the mercifulness of its leader.
  • The Good Kingdom: The only faction among the three who doesn't engage in conquests, preferring negotiating over fighting.
  • Martial Pacifist: Even though Shoku takes a passive approach in the civil war, many of its generals have plenty of experience in battle and are a force to be reckoned with, such as Kan'u and Ryofu, two of the strongest warriors of their time.
  • Underdogs Never Lose: In the original game, Shoku starts as the weakest faction out of the three, but starts growing in power as more and more provinces join its side, eventually vassalizing Gi and Go to unify China.

"I'll fight for a peaceful world and everyone's happiness...!"

One of the greatest heroes of her time, having rose from a small voluntary army to the queen of the Shoku Kingdom.

As a queen, Ryuubi wants to create a world of peaceful coexistence, where people can understand each other through words instead of the everyday violence of the civil war, which naturally opposes her to Sousou, the queen of Gi who intends to unite China by force.

Being quite young she is naive and single-minded, often reluctant to go to war, and hates paperwork (much to the chagrin of Kan'u who as a result often scolds the young queen and reminds her of her duties), but has a lot of confidence on her subordinates.

  • All-Loving Hero: She considers every person in her army to be a friend no matter what, to the point she saves the Go faction from annihilation in Souten no Haou despite Sonsaku breaking off their anti-Gi alliance, on the grounds of being the friends of Shoku.
  • Badass Pacifist: What sets apart Touka from the other warlords is her unwillingness to use violence against her enemies, even leaving cities in the face of a more powerful opponent in order to spare the people from needless violence,. Later downplayed in the later stages of the war, where she resigns herself to use force in order to defend Shoku against Gi.
    • Ryuuki no Taimou effectively subverts the trope by having Touka pursuing Karin after the debacle of Gi's fleet against Shoku and Go's combined fleet. She then sends Kan'u to make her submit by force, thus proving that in the end of the day, Violence Really Is the Answer.
    • Touka's Struggle, the very last sidestory of the remake, has instead Touka sticking to her beliefs and chooses not to pursue Karin after destroying her fleet. Despite her advisors and generals telling her to defeat Karin in an all-out battle, she doesn't try to fight her and instead attempts to open negociations with her while searching for a way to end the war diplomatically and make Karin admit that her way of thinking is flawed.
  • Big Good: Of Shoku's route and Ryuuki no Taimou, as the leader of Shoku.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Unlike her other two rivals of Gi and Go, she doesn't have proper training with the sword, but she wouldn't hesite to fight to protect the weak, despite being one of them herself.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Partway through Ryuuki no Taimou, it is eventually revealed that Touka wasn't originally keen on reunification. After losing her mother in a bandit raid, she was left with nothing but vengeance. When Aisha and Rinrin, both mercenaries at the time, visited the destroyed town, an impoverished Touka took upon herself to improvise a big speech on the fly in order to convince them to join her without actually paying them. Using the knowledge of her teachers combined with her natural charisma, she created a made-up ideal involving an unified China, free of tyranny and corruption, and promoting mutual cooperation: Said ideal allowed her to rally several townspeople and mercenaries to her cause, impressed by her speech. It is only after setting down in the Joshuu (Xuzhou) Province that she eventually reveals the truth to Aisha, Rinrin and Kazuto, feeling that she's an hypocrite when it comes to following through her ideals of pacifism, despite fighting many battles. However, none of the three actually mind, even with Aisha seeing through her lie firsthand, yet chose to follow Touka regardless to see if she would actually fight for her ideals, something that she proved many times during their travels.
  • Deuteragonist: After the first two remakes focusing on Gi and Go, she's eventually given the role in the third and last remake, Ryuuki no Taimou.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Replacing Kazuto as the leader of Shoku from Shin Koihime onwards, she has taken several of his positive traits such as his mercifulness towards his enemies, his relationship with Kan'u, and most importantly being one of the nicest characters of the series.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Her clumsy kindness and naivety are what make her such a beloved leader to the people of Shoku.
  • Establishing Character Moment: She's introduced in Ryuuki no Taimou by rescuing civilians from the Yellow Turbans, and makes a point of protecting Kazuto, despite being outnumbered and her lack of proper training with the sword, showing her as a weak, yet selfless individual who always thinks of others before herself.
  • The Fettered: She has the greatest sense of morality and honor out of anyone in the cast.
  • Final Boss: Of Gi's route, having united all of Go's army under her banner and opposing Sousou's conquest.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: Like her historical counterpart, Ryuubi is the founder and first queen of the Shoku Kingdom.
  • Friend to All Children: She gets along really well with children.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in pigtails, combined with odango hair.
  • The Heart: Like Kazuto, she's the moral center of Shoku, standing as a symbol of her warlords' unity. She shares the role with Kazuto in Ryuuki no Taimou.
  • Hero Antagonist: In Souten no Haou, she's depicted as an idealistic and loving woman who dreams of peace and harmony in the war-torn China, and actively opposes Sousou's vision of a united China under a single powerful ruler who considers her too naive. She leads the armies of Shoku and later Go during their alliance to stop Sousou's conquest, making her the antagonist as Sousou is effectively the heroine and Deuteragonist.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: She's the Big Good of her faction and wields a sword when she has to fight.
  • The High Queen: Ryuubi is a benevolent and pure-hearted queen who wishes for world peace.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: She was given many positive traits similar to Liu Bei's portrayal in Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
  • Honor Before Reason: Being the most benevolent character of the series, she has several instances of it.
    • In Souten no Haou, she refuses Sousou's suggestion to give her Kan'u as exchange for saving her people, despite having no other option available. Even though it turns out it was a Secret Test of Character from Sousou's part, she calls her out on it.
    • In Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she has a territorial dispute with Sonken over the Keishuu province (Jingzhou) after its warlord pledged loyalty to her following Sonsaku's death. Despite Go having a better army than Shoku, she refuses to ally with them, believing Sonken to the same as Sousou since she also has the same goal of unifying China by force.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Downplayed. She's quick to trust people given her naive personality, but her sincere desire to befriend other generals regardless of their personalities has given her many admirers. That said, she had doubts towards Sonken and hesitated to trust her in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, believing she was a ruthless conqueror like Sousou.
  • Humble Hero: Despite being in a position to do so, she doesn't consider herself the Queen of Shoku but rather a mere warlord among others, leaving relative autonomy to her vassals. When Sonsaku and later Sonken first meet her in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, both are surprised by her humility and friendliness.
  • Ideal Hero: She's kindhearted, caring, honorable, noble, and selfless. Despite being the queen of her faction, she treats all of her followers as her friends and equals. Her companions admire her for her dream to unify China through peaceful means instead of causing war and tyranny.
Ryuubi: "We need to bring peace back to this land. Someone has to do it..."
  • Idiot Hair: She has a cowlick that stands prominently atop her head.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Her blue eyes represent her innocence and idealism.
  • The Kirk: The sweet and wise Ryuubi keeps the balance between the strict Kan'u and the cheerful Chouhi.
  • Magnetic Hero: She doesn't have any talent, but her sheer charisma and loving personality allowed her to gather many powerful individuals around her, smitten by her wisdom and her courage.
  • A Mother to Her Men: She cares about all her followers as if they were her family, believes everyone in her army is her equal, and refuses to even consider battle tactics that endanger their lives.
  • Nice Girl: She's gentle, kind, and endlessly compassionate.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: She's the Nice to Sousou's Mean, with Sonsaku/Sonken being the In-Between. Ryuubi/Touka is the most moral and idealistic of the three main faction leaders.
  • Power of Trust: Similar to Kazuto, she's friendly to everyone she meets, and immediately bonded with Sonsaku in Son Go no Ketsumyaku during their time in the Anti-Toutaku Alliance, despite her Blood Knight tendencies.
Sonsaku: "Why do you trust me so easily?"
Ryuubi: Umm, I don't really know why...But you seem to be a kind and reliable person.
Sonsaku: You do know that trusting people too much can cause you problems, right?
Ryuubi: I think trust is more important than anything else.
  • Rags to Royalty: The Hard Way example. Like her historical counterpart, Ryuubi was born into a poor family that sold straw-woven mats. She eventually became the commander of a voluntary army and through several feats, founded the Shoku Kingdom where she now rules as queen.
  • Regal Ringlets: Downplayed. She has straight hair with twintails that curl into ringlets to denote her royal status as a queen.
  • Reluctant Warrior: As the leader of Shoku, she doesn't like fighting unlike Sonsaku and Sousou, but is perfectly able to fight when the situation calls for it.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She's a sweet, cheerful and innocent young girl with rose-colored hair.
  • Stupid Good: Downplayed. Like Kazuto in the first game, she's driven by her ideals of peace and friendship and is unwilling to abandon any of her companions to anyone she perceives as an enemy. She's well aware of her personality being unfitting for her era, but she managed nonetheless to gather many warlords to her side thanks to it.
  • Tareme Eyes: Big and round eyes for a sweet and naive queen.
  • Technical Pacifist: She actually devises strategies centered around avoiding casualties as much as possible, fitting with her goal to bring peace to China, even though she's aware of her lack of strength and requires the help of more seasoned warriors.
Ryuubi: "...I'm usually talking about peace, yet I also ask everyone to fight for that. I know it's sort of strange...But if we do nothing, innocent people will continue to be oppressed."
  • To Win Without Fighting: When possible, she always tries to prevent conflicts by negotiating with her opponents to avoid war, only using force as a last resort. It is also her core motivation in Touka's Struggle, in which she searches for a way to make Sousou admit defeat without destroying her army, and devises a long plan with the help of Kentei, who wants to help her people by being more than a glorified peasant.
    • First, Shoku uses the numerous connections of Fan she gained from being one of the Ten Eunuchs, in order to prepare for Kentei's return to power. When the latter effectively returns to the capital to proclaim the Empire once again, all of the Kan soldiers broke their allegiance with Gi, content with serving under their rightful ruler once again.
    • When word of Kentei's return go around the provinces forcibly allied with Gi, most of them declare neutrality, forcing Sousou to occupy them with her own troops (thus greatly reducing her ability to invade southern China). By having Kentei returning to the capital, Touka wants to prove that no matter how much force is used to make people submit, they would always wait for an opportunity to expel their occupiers, out of loyalty for their own province and former ruler.
Sousou: I understand her point. The hearts of conquered people are fragile, and regardless of the personal qualities of their new ruler, their resentment against me, an invader who drove out the Emperor, will not disappear so easily.
Jun'iku: If we cared about this issue that much, unifying the country would be impossible.
Sousou: ...Impossible to unify it my way, that is.
    • Seeing Gi weakened by the events, Touka then makes opening moves towards negotiation with Sousou. With the help of her strategists, she tries to convince her to stop her conquest and becoming once again part of the restored Kan Empire, but still cannot persuade her to abandon her violent ways. Losing much of her support, Sousou is left with Gi as her sole territory following several defeats against the Anti-Gi Alliance.
    • Left with no other choice but to fight in a last battle (with some help from Sonken Bundai and Koso), Sousou attempts an all-out attack with the rest of her troops composed of her most loyal followers, in the hopes of killing Touka and forcing Shoku to negotiate. After losing much of her army in this final assault, she manages to reach Ryuubi, who walks out to her defenseless to talk with her.
    • Touka ultimately imposes a Logic Bomb to Sousou: Killing her would certainly put an end to Shoku and allow her to resume her conquest, but doing so would make her a target to Touka's followers for the years to come, because she's loved by her people. By understanding this, Sousou then realizes that the reason her followers stayed with her in spite of her hopeless situation comes not from submitting them by force, but because they love her and would not betray Gi out of sheer loyalty, as all of them joined her of their own volition.
    • Ultimately acknowledging both her defeat and the failings of her ideals, Sousou accepts to be a vassal of Shoku instead of Kan because of her lack of trust in Kentei, whom she sees as part of a failed government. However, she's later convinced to be a part of Kan again following a meeting with her, in which Kentei wholly accepts to reduce and share her power after hearing her criticism and acknowledging that the Imperial Court is responsible for its own demise.
    • Thus, Touka's Struggle can be seen as an answer to the original ending of Ryuuki no Taimou, by having Touka sticking to her ideals to the very end instead of defeating Sousou by force.
  • Violence Really Is the Answer: As the final battle against Sousou draws near, she admits that resorting to brute force might be the only way to stop her.
    • The end of Ryuuki no Taimou confirms it, as Sousou is eventually defeated in a duel by Kan'u. She gracefully accepts her defeat, while pointing out that Touka made her submit by force in the end, thus admitting that Asskicking Leads to Leadership even applies to her.
    • Touka's Struggle takes another approach, in which she sticks to her ideals and forgoes the opportunity to defeat Sousou by force. The following months has Touka and Kentei contemplate every possibility to avert the trope and persuade Sousou to stop her invasion through diplomacy.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Unlike other warlords, she isn't interested in conquest, and for that, she's derided by her rivals as weak and naive. Most of her territory actually comes from her numerous vassals who joined her out of admiration for her ideals of peaceful cohabitation, making her "weakness" a strength in a war-torn country where everyone turns on each other.
  • White Magician Girl: All of her super techniques are healing moves of varying power levels.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: She sincerely believes in a world of mutual understanding and coexistence between nations, putting her at odds with Gi's ruler Sousou and later Go's ruler Sonken.

"My name is Kan Unchou. I belong to Ryuu Gentoku's side and I'll support her beliefs from the bottom of my heart."

The main heroine of the first Koihime, who shows up shortly after Kazuto is transported back in time and saves him from a group of bandits. Due to Kazuto's strange attire and manner of speech, she subsequently mistakes him to be the "Messenger from Heaven" and becomes the first person to vow her loyalty to him.

From Shin Koihime†Musou onwards, Kan'u is relegated to the position of Ryuubi's second-in-command and confidante with a different introduction.

A sympathizer of Ryuubi ever since her early days as a warlord, who followed her ever since as her bodyguard with a strength rivaling the most powerful people of China such as Ryofu and Sonsaku.

  • Aloof Leader, Affable Subordinate: Inverted. In contrast to her amicable and charismatic master Ryuubi, Kan'u is a very serious woman who demands strict discipline.
  • Berserk Button: She takes being called and treated like a woman as an insult.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Being the strongest warrior of Shoku, she usually stays around Touka whenever she's in danger.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She likes to act as the protective and self-proclaimed big sister to Ryuubi, being one of her first recruits and the woman she values the most.
Kan'u: "I am the sword that will protect my sister from harm!"
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: She initially doesn't care about being seen naked because she doesn't view herself as a woman. After she falls in love with Kazuto, she becomes embarrassed when he walks into her changing.
  • Celibate Heroine: She's strongly opposed to romance and sexuality overall. She grows out of it as soon as she starts having sex with Kazuto.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She gets very jealous whenever Kazuto is around other girls and is very much against him having a harem because she wants to be his one and only love interest. Later on, she does become more open to the idea of Polyamory.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She starts off as very tough and serious, but her love for Kazuto causes her to warm up and embrace her sweet, feminine side.
  • Demoted to Extra: She was originally the main heroine in the first game, but beginning with Shin Koihime she played second fiddle to Ryuubi. Worse, by the third game, Kan'u's relegated to a supporting character of other spotlight heroines. Eventually downplayed by Ryuuki no Taimou, in which she regains prominence as Ryuubi's aide.
  • The Dividual: A Syndividual type with Ryuubi. In the remakes, Kazuto romances Ryuubi and Kan'u at the same time, with their route treating them as a single heroine for all intents and purposes.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: She becomes this way towards Kazuto in the first game after several battles, supposedly to keep him in shape and top form.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Her first appearance in the first game and Ryuuki no Taimou has her saving the day to protect Kazuto and Touka from being killed by the Yellow Turbans, then going on a banter to present herself as Kan'u, one of the mightiest warriors of her time. She's also established as Touka's self-proclaimed big sister, who protects her from harm and the one who helps her from the shadows.
  • Foil: To Ryuubi after the latter's addition in Shin. Since Kazuto pretty much romances the two at the same time, Kan'u is deliberately made the opposite to the carefree and bubbly Ryuubi.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Stuffed animals are one of her soft spots.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Her first meeting with Ryuubi showed her how she could use her terryfing strength to do the right thing, and choose to become one of her first followers, inspired by her desire to bring peace.
  • The Lancer: To Kazuto in the first game, and Ryuubi in Shin and the Kakumei remakes, given her role as their primary foil and most loyal follower.
  • Number Two: Starting from Shin Koihime†Musou, Kan'u plays the role of Ryuubi's second-in-command.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The disciplined, stern Blue Oni to Chouhi's childish, carefree Red Oni.
  • The Spock: In the main Freudian Trio of Shoku, Kan'u is the serious and no-nonsense one.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's serious, collected and focused, but her hidden sweet and cute side shows itself as she falls in love with Kazuto. In the remakes, she also can loosen up around her sworn sisters Ryuubi and Chouhi and obviously cares about them.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: When interacting with the generals of Go during the Anti-Gi Alliance in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she's the only general who doesn't trust them at all. Her attitude later softens when she learns of Kougai's mission to fake defection to Sousou.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Kan'u is a female warrior who hates being treated like a woman. However, she secretly hides a more feminine side, particularly her weakness towards stuffed animals but she hates to admit it, preferring to keep a masculine side.
  • Tsundere: She acts tough and has no tolerance for Kazuto's slacker habits, but her growing affection for him causes her to warm up and display a much sweeter and delicate side. Their first meeting during Ryuuki no Taimou is also met with suspicion, due to Kazuto's uncertain origins.
Kan'u: "Don't get carried away. I haven't fully trusted you yet."
  • Tsurime Eyes: Her eyes are sharp and focused like Kan'u herself.
  • Undying Loyalty: Like Guan Yu in the novel, Kan'u is strongly defined by her devotion and admiration of her noble and idealistic leader.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Don't mess with Kazuto because Kan'u won't let you off easy.
  • Workaholic: Kan'u never relaxes even at times of peace and overloads herself with government work. On occasions, she also pressures others into working just as hard, such as scolding Kazuto for slacking off and making Chouhi study.

    Chouhi - Rinrin

"Rinrin and her friends will stop this unending conflict! If you want to pass this bridge, you have to defeat Rinrin first!"

A talkative and always cheerful girl. While she's as strong as Kan'u in raw power, she's more childish and immature, prone to listen to her emotions and easily falling to provocations. She's also known in Shoku as a glutton, creating a rivalry with Kyocho, a warrior of Gi with a similar personality.

In the first game, she joins Kazuto along with Kan'u after the two discover him together, and in Shin Koihime, she's instead introduced as a follower of Ryuubi alongside Kan'u.

  • Animal Motifs: Her jacket has a tiger strip pattern and she has a tiger hairclip.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She's pretty tomboyish and tough. Fittingly, she keeps her hair short.
  • Cute Bruiser: A sweet girl who's also much stronger than her appearance and behavior suggests.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Her sharp fangs represent her energetic and mischievous personality. They also go along with her tiger motif.
  • Expressive Accessory: Her tiger hairpin always mimics her expression.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: One of her fingerless gloves is elbow-length while the other is wrist-length.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has orangish red hair and she's a pretty energetic, hotheaded kid.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She gets confused when Kazuto is flustered while going Skinny Dipping with her.
  • Little Miss Badass: Despite being quite short, she's able to wield a lance twice her size.
  • Little Sister Heroine: While she's part of the harem, she acts more like Kazuto's cute, energetic little sister and calls him "onii-chan", clearly playing into the trope.
  • The McCoy: In the main Freudian Trio of Shoku, Chouhi is the outspoken and energetic one.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The childish, carefree Red Oni to Kan'u's disciplined, stern Blue Oni.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: She wears a red scarf around her neck.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: She dolls herself up by putting on a dress Kouchuu gives her so she can be cuter in Kazuto's eyes.
  • Third-Person Person: She always refers to herself as Rinrin instead of using a pronoun.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She's an outgoing tomboy, but that doesn't stop her from putting on a cute dress so she can be girly around Kazuto.
  • Too Many Belts: Two overlapping, both purely ornamental given her skin-tight spats.
  • Verbal Tic: Ends all of her sentences with 'なのだ', 'nanoda'.

"Heh...I don't have to tell my name for bandits like yourselves!"

A collected and cynical person at heart, who likes to use enigmatic sentences that make it difficult to see her true intentions.

She is also an incomparable drinker and a lover of menma, and she can turn into an entirely different person upon being deprived of both.

In Koihime, she fought the Tou army alongside Kan'u, after which Chouun met Kazuto and took a liking to him, promising to join his army later. She has a habit of running around the city as the masked hero of justice 'Butterfly Mask' in her patrol shift.

  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Animal Alias type. Chouun likes to pretend she's a superheroine by putting on a butterfly mask and calling herself "Butterfly Mask".
  • Berserk Button: Don't eat her menma, she won't forgive you.
  • Chuunibyou: As seen by her tendency to wield a mask and disguising as a heroine.
  • Cleavage Window: Her dress has an opening that shows off her cleavage.
  • Combat Pragmatist: She takes a more strategic approach to fights than the other generals, which allows her to win against opponents that they can't defeat.
  • Death Glare: She'll give one to whosoever dares to even look at her Trademark Favorite Food.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Her lectures and scolding's are the ones that Bachou and Chouhi are most afraid of, moreso than Kan'u's. Chouun's unit is likened to a modern commando outfit which would imply a certain increase in training standards as well.
  • Hair Intakes: The two "cat ears" that are part of her hairdo.
  • Lady of War: On the battlefield, she keeps a beautiful and graceful aura, always knocking down her enemies as if she was dancing.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Her "disguise" as Butterfly Mask... consists of just a butterfly mask.
  • Pregnant Badass: She becomes one in Eiyuutan 1, being one of the first of Kazuto's harem to become pregnant with his child.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's a calm and composed woman, but her loving and flirtatious side comes out around Kazuto.
  • The Tease: She has no qualms for teasing Kazuto.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Menma, or fermented bamboo shoots, typically with plenty of alcohol. On some occasions, she can even eat them on their own (it's a condiment).
  • The Trickster: She does love sowing a small amount of chaos just for her own amusement or to make a point.
  • Walking the Earth: Wandered about looking for a worthy master before the events of the game. She also mentions that she used to travel with her brothers.
  • Witty Banter: Chouun's just too good at it.

"Behold the godly technique of Kyokucho!"

A master archer. Outside of the battlefield, she's known as a caring, motherly general and a bit of a seducer with a small daughter by the name of Riri. Because of her vast experience and gentle personality, many people rely on her for advice for everyday life as much as battles.

In the first game, her daughter Riri was kidnapped by Enshou's men to make Kouchuu fight Kazuto's army. Thanks to Choun, Kazuto's group was able to rescue Riri and returned her to Kouchuu. The rescue allows her to see how Kazuto is a good person, and she offers her services to him and fights at his side in Shoku.

The remakes introduce her as a vassal of Ryuuhyou (Liu Biao), lord of the province of Keishuu (Jingzhou), alongside fellow vassals Gien and Kouso. Following the handover of Keishuu to Ryuubi, she joins Shoku afterwards.

  • Action Mom: Besides being the only heroine of Shoku to have a daughter, she's also a Master Archer who's collected on the battlefield.
Shion: "Well then. Once we've subdued the enemy forces, we'll go help the others."
  • Badass Cape: She wears a long green cape with a huge bird motif.
  • Cleavage Window: There's an opening in her dress that exposes her cleavage.
  • Covert Pervert: While she's a well-mannered Team Mom, she's also one of the most sexually aggressive members of the harem. She doesn't hide her sexual desires towards Kazuto and is prone to losing herself in risqué fantasies.
  • Forced into Evil: In the first game, she's introduced as an enemy because Enshou's forces took her daughter hostage.
  • Master Archer: Her archery technique is said to resemble that of Kyokucho, the god of archery.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: She wears a leg-slit dress that reveals her left leg up to well above her thighs.
  • Team Mom: As the oldest and more mature member of Kazuto's faction, Kouchuu looks after the younger members of the harem and they go to her for advice in love and sex life. It helps Kouchuu is already an actual mother.
  • The Tease: She enjoys flirting with Kazuto quite a lot and can make lecherous advances at him.

"You're just a child who doesn't know the difference between a game and an actual war. Isn't that cute?"

A single female federal lord that was the teacher to Gien, she decommissioned her from straining the promise that Gien would not draw her sword.

She's a free-spirited woman who enjoys her life according to her heart's desire, without caring much for appearances and etiquette. Deep down however, she's driven by a sense of honor and hates injustice.

Notably, she uses a unique weapon of her own design nicknamed the "Sky-Roaring Cannon", a gun-like tool who fires giant bolts of iron.

  • Expository Pronoun: She uses "washi"; odd considering it's usually reserved for old men and historically it's unknown how old Yan Yan was when he first appeared in the novel.
  • Great Bow: Her "Sky-Roaring Cannon" is the largest bow ever worn in the series, allowing her to fire spear-like projectiles.
Kikyo: "A single shot from this little baby will reduce your blade to bits and pierce your body in one swoop."
  • The Lad-ette: Even though she has duties as a federal lord, she does do some leisurely activities ranging from drinking alcohol to attending and betting on horse races.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: She wears a leg-slit dress that reveals her right leg.

"Is there anyone who can defeat me?"

Formerly a vassal of the warlord Ryuuhyou (Liu Biao) of the Keishuu (Jingzhou) province, she was recruited into Shoku's army following her defeat against Go. She is deeply in love with Ryuubi, to the point of taking extreme actions for her sake, often disregarding her own life. Her main weapon is a big dual mace reflecting her straightforward personality and figthing style, causing her to be easily tricked on the battlefield by smarter opponents, but she makes it up with her determination to protect her queen.

  • Bodyguard Crush: Upon joining Shoku's army, she instantly fell in love with their leader Ryuubi and swore allegiance to her as a devoted bodyguard for her.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She has one of the shortest haircuts among the heroines, and she has a very masculine personality.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: She wets herself following a terrifying battle against Sonken Bundai, who defeated her with one stroke.
  • Carry a Big Stick: Her main weapon is a dual mace of sorts.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: On the receiving end in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, in which she gets defeated by Sonken Bundai with a single hit.
  • Glory Hound: In Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she's easily convinced by Kouso to join her coalition to kill Sonken Bundai for allegedly threatening the borders of Northern China, thinking the fame she would gain will make her independent from her liege Ryuuhyou.
  • Love at First Sight: She falls for Ryuubi immediately.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She quickly realizes her mistake for listening to Kouso in the first place, after seeing she only wanted to use her as a decoy to reach Sonsaku.
  • Navel Window: Her shirt has a gap around her navel.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Teifu loves to remind her of her loss against Sonken and aforementioned Bring My Brown Pants, much to her embarrassment.
  • Showgirl Skirt: She wears a long skirt that splits at the front, exposing her legs.
  • Skilled, but Naive: Her skills with maces are solid, but she's still inexperienced in battles and has a hard time understanding complex fighting styles, instead striking everything in her path without thinking too much.

"Too bad! Rairai was here!"
"Denden's over here!"

Two sisters born of wealthy merchants who choose a life of travels and adventures to make a name for themselves.

Bijiku is known for her everyday positive attitude and cheerfulness no matter the situation, and likes to get involved in crowded events.

Her younger sister Bihou is clumsier and has a tendency to screw up, but her likeable personality and adorable demeanor makes her very good with people, who like to pamper her.

  • Confusion Fu: Their fighting style involves confusing their enemy by rapidly switching places.
  • Dual Wielding: Both twins are dual-wielders; Bijiku fights using two tambourines while Bihou wields a pair of tonfa-like weapons.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Their faces are identical, but their eye colors, hairstyles, and the places of their hair clips make it easy to set them apart.
  • Instrument of Murder: Bijiku's weapon resembles tambourines.
  • Little Bit Beastly: They're little girls with fox ears and tails.
  • Third-Person Person: Both call themselves by their true names instead of using first-person pronouns.

Ba Clan of Liangzhou

    Tropes applying to the family
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: All of the four members of the clan sport notably thick eyebrows compared to the rest of the cast.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Bachou represents the Melancholic, Batai is the Choleric, Bakyuu is the Phlegmatic and Batetsu is the Sanguine.
  • Hereditary Hairstyle: Ponytails are their clan's characteristic hairstyle.
  • Idiot Hair: The Ba sisters have a strand of hair prominently sticking out atop their heads.
  • Martial Arts Headband: They wear a strip of cloth around their heads when they go into battle.
  • Mounted Combat: The Ba Clan is famous for its horses, being the only clan to use them on the battlefield.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Although not all of them are equally tomboyish, they're all experts in Mounted Combat and tie their hair back into ponytails so it doesn't get in the way.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: Due to being three sisters and their cousin, the four girls share many physical traits, down to the Big Ol' Eyebrows, brown hair and ponytails.

"My name is Kin Bachou! If you are not afraid of this name, which is even known by the Goko, then come at me!"

Before joining Ryuubi (or Kazuto in the first game), Bachou first appeared as the representative of her father Batou, the warlord of the Ryoushuu (Liangzhou) province during the Anti-Kan/Toutaku alliance, in which she was mostly reserved and restrained.

Some time after, she enters into a conflict with Sousou during the civil war, but eventually lose Ryoushuu with her father dying during the invasion. On the verge of despair, Bachou and her sisters then join Ryuubi/Kazuto's army so they can get revenge on Sousou for their father's death.

In Hakugetsu no Tomoshibi, she's featured as a close friend and ally of Toutaku, before the fall of the Kan Empire.

  • Badass Boast:
Bachou: You won't get away! I'll give you a taste of my spear, Seiryou style!
  • Dumb Muscle: She specializes in Mounted Combat and is very strong on plains, but she's also simpleminded and prefers to leave the thinking to her fellow warriors. Downplayed in regards to her abilities in leading an army.
  • Endearingly Dorky: She becomes extremely embarrassed when alone with a man, especially Kazuto because of his tendency to tease, making her relationship with Kazuto start off awkward in the Base Phase events.
  • Hot-Blooded: She's the most hotheaded warrior of Shoku.
  • The Leader: Bachou is the main representative of the Ba Clan and the leading voice of Liangzhou, as an independant warlord before joining Shoku in the main series.
  • Stutter Stop: When embarrassed, she usually cannot speak more than a few words at a time.
  • You Killed My Father: In every continuity of the series, Bachou tries to kill Sousou at one point after causing the death of her father.

"Tanpopo's here!"

A member of the Ba Family and Bachou's younger cousin, who enjoys goofing around as much as fighting.

Despite being younger than Bachou, she has no issues being around men and often teases her about her numerous issues about them. She also doesn't get along well with the more serious and hot-blooded Gien.

  • Cheshire Cat Grin: On par with her teasing tendencies.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Batai can't stand-up to Bachou's abilities so she tries to use cheap tricks and deception to win fights.
  • Foil: She's a mischievous and cunning individual opposed to the ever honourable and straight-laced Gien, and often trades barbs (and blows) with her.
  • The Gadfly: She likes to say outrageous things out of the blue to get a good reaction out of people, especially those by the name of Bachou and Gien.
  • I Shall Taunt You: She's able to defeat Gien in their first meeting by taunting her, thus starting a rivalry that lasts for the rest of the game.
  • Third-Person Person: She usually starts her sentences using her own name as a pronoun.
  • The Tease: Tanpopo is quick to express her love for Kazuto, attempting to seduce him whenever possible, sometimes as a joke, sometimes for real.
  • The Trickster: Because of her lack of raw strength, she tends to use tricks and traps to overcome her opponents.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Although she is proud of her superior military prowess for her size, she's weaker than the rest of the Shoku warriors, forcing her to rely on wits and deceptions unlike the vast majority who prefer to fight honorably.

"If we go together, no one will be able to stop us, right?"

The middle of the Ba sisters, younger than Bachou and older than Batetsu. As the middle child of the family, she naturally became the coordinator of the whole Ba clan, usually filled with hotheaded warriors including her eldest sister.

Following their allegiance with Ryuubi, she took over her father Batou's seat in local politics after his death.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite complaining a lot about her teammates and her job, she's a good person to rely on and loves her family.
  • Only Sane Woman: Out of all the four Ba sisters, she stands out for being the most moderate and level-headed of the lot.

The youngest of the Ba sisters, who's especially close to her cousin Batai (Tanpopo).

Strategists

    Tropes applying to both
  • Covert Pervert: They secretly "research" certain carnal arts by reading perverted books.
  • The Dividual: Starting from Shin Koihime, Koumei is paired with Houtou and they're treated like the same character overall since both are their faction's strategists. They're almost always seen together and share a similarly shy personality.
  • In-Series Nickname: Koumei is nicknamed "Hawawa Strategist" and Houtou is "Awawa Strategist". Both got the nickname from their respective Nervous Tics.
  • Nervous Tics: Koumei tends to say "Hawawa~" whenever she's surprised or nervous, to the point of getting a rather derisive nickname. Houtou has the same habit, except she says "Awawa~".
  • Shorter Means Smarter: They're among the shortest members of their faction, yet both are smart strategists.
  • Shrinking Violet: They're both very shy and timid.
  • The Strategist: They're the strategists of the Shoku Kingdom.

"I feel the existence of a superior, unseen force governing our fates. I wonder if something could make it swing in the right or wrong direction... "

A one-of-a-kind, genius strategist whose tactics and wits will be talked about for generations to come...Eventually.

She's a shy, kind, and reserved girl around the same age as Rinrin, but is a smart, good strategist in battle.

Her dream is to make the world a better place, searching for a rightful ruler who will end the civil war across China. With that in mind, she eventually joins forces with the idealistic warlord Ryuubi (Kazuto in the original game), alongside her friend Hinari.

  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's a really sweet, kind-hearted and helpful young girl with pretty blonde hair.
  • Innocent Prodigy: Her lack of self-confidence and child-like nature often overshadow her genius as a strategist, and she has been known to act on the same level of immaturity as Chouhi.
  • Only Sane Woman: As Shoku's main tactician, she's effectively this to the other female generals before Ryuubi was introduced.
  • Stocking Filler: She wears garters to hold up her stockings.
  • Wise Beyond Her Years: She's quite mature and wise for a girl of her age.

"Winning isn't always a necessity. The most important thing is to grasp our future."

A military strategist of Ryuubi's army who volunteered to join alongside her best friend Koumei (Shuri). Her outfit resembles that of a witch.

  • Best Friend: She's Shuri's closest friend who's almost always with her.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair up into twin-tails, which adds to her cute childish looks.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: When things gets serious, she becomes extremely calm and focused, able to make swift decisions, sometimes being more accurate and ruthless than her friend Shuri who's considered the best in her field.
  • The Quiet One: Being a huge introvert, she always talks with a very quiet voice.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: Her hair has a light blue tint and she's a very timid girl.

"I'd like to know your opinion about me. It's important."

The feudal lord of the nothern province of Yuushuu (Youzhou), who's also a former student of Roshoku and a classmate of Ryuubi. She's a serious, diligent, and honest person who excels in both politics and military affairs.

However, she has an utter lack of self-esteem caused by her seemingly "plain" appearance, and is afraid to be perceived by others as "average".

  • Ascended Extra: She started as a minor character in the first game whose territory was quickly annexed by her neighbor Enshou. In Ryuuki no Taimou, she's one of Touka's first allies during her time as a bureaucrat, helping her managing paperwork and diplomatic relations with other feudal lords.
  • Back for the Finale: After disappearing very early in Koihime, she comes back in the Golden Ending with everyone else.
  • Badass Bureaucrat: On top of having good skills as a bureaucrat, she's able to fight in the frontlines in times of need.
  • Hime Cut: She's a feudal lord with parted blunt bangs, cheek-length sidelocks, and bra strap-length straight hair.

"It is my pleasure to serve under Momoka and her Lord. Please do not hesitate to use me as you see fit."

Ryuubi's personal maid and bodyguard. She's also a very skilled secret agent.

Usually calm and composed, she is likened to a mature big sister among the Shoku people and trusted by everyone, who likes to take care of people to the point of forgetting about her own happiness.

  • Animal-Eared Headband: She wears a bonnet decorated with cat ears.
  • The Atoner: Part of the reason behind her Workaholic character is to atone for her past as a Professional Killer by choosing to help her benefactor in the guise of a maid.
  • Bodyguard Betrayal: She usually carries out her counter-espionnage or assassination missions by disguising as a foreign maid bodyguarding her targets.
Miifa: "By the time you found out about me, it was already too late... This is the will of the shadows. Die."
  • Cleavage Window: Her maid outfit has a gap at the center of the chest, displaying her cleavage.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her hair is tied into a pair of low pigtails.
  • Extreme Doormat: She rarely thinks for herself.
  • Meido: Her occupation is Ryuubi's personal maid and dresses accordingly.
  • Ninja Maid: Her main occupation is being Ryuubi's Meido. Her other task is to infiltrate other countries in order to do sabotage operations and assassinations.
  • Showgirl Skirt: Her maid dress has a long skirt that splits at the front so we can see her nice legs.
  • Stocking Filler: She wears stockings with suspenders.
  • The Tease: She's quick to tease Kazuto upon getting to know him, taking a liking in flustering him.
  • Workaholic: She chooses to act as Ryuubi and Kazuto's bodyguard at all times despite them wanting her to take time for herself.

"Just you wait! Riri will soon be as big as Mom!"

Kouchuu's daughter, who will be later known as Koujo.

She looks up to Shoku's mightiest generals: The gentle Ryuubi (Touka), the fun-loving Chouhi (Rinrin), but she's not so good with the harsh and strict Kan'u (Aisha), which depresses her a little.

  • The Cutie: She is considered the mascot of the Shoku Kingdom, being a naive and innocent child whom everyone adores.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair into pigtails because that hairstyle looks adorable in cute little girls like her.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She's a sweet and innocent little girl with light blue eyes.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She's basically a mini Kouchuu.

Gi (Wei) Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gi_4.png

One of the Three Kingdoms, also known as the Sou Faction and the most powerful of the three. Starting as a vassal of the Kan Empire led by the General Sousou Motoku, it eventually declared its independence after the Yellow Turbans Rebellion and the takeover of Toutaku. Boasting the most powerful army of the entire country, Sousou declares herself Queen and quickly begins a series of conquests to unify China following the collapse of the Empire to independent warlords, under her new Kingdom of Gi.

    In General
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Being one of the most powerful contenders for unifying China, Gi easily unifies Northern China after defeating the armies of Enshou in the Guandu Campaign and taking her entire domain. After winning the Battle of Red Cliffs in Souten no Haou, Gi essentially beats the Anti-Gi Alliance into submission, with Sousou personally recruiting Ryuubi and Sonsaku as advisors to help her co-govern the united China.
  • Battle Harem: Many of Sousou's warriors are in love with her, and several scenes shows her hitting on them on a regular basis.
  • The Empire: Gi eventually becomes this at the end of Souten no Haou.
  • Rising Empire: The Kakumei remakes, particularly Souten no Haou, depicts Gi's expansion and military conquests to become the most powerful of the Three Kingdoms intent on conquering Go and Shoku.
  • Villain Protagonist: Downplayed. As the playable faction of Souten no Haou, Gi certainly represents the greatest threat to pretty much everyone else in China thanks to its ever-expanding size and the ambition of its ruler Sousou, who's more of an Anti-Villain with great intentions but violent methods.

"The Mandate of Heaven will be mine to claim. Be my arms and legs, and I, Sou Motoku, will grant your wish.

The blonde queen of the kingdom of Gi in Koihime (in)famous for her love of beautiful women. She's a proud and confident woman gifted with many talents in poetry, cooking, governing among other things. Despite being considered a genius in her field, she nonetheless continues to better herself to reach greater heights.

In Souten no Haou, she's first introduced as a general of the Kan Empire, and foresaw its collapse by the hands of the Yellow Turbans and the other warlords in the Anti-Toutaku/Kan alliance. She then begins a series of conquests to unite China under the banner of her kingdom of Gi, hoping to end the civil war as its new leader, with the help of a certain man from the future...

  • A-Cup Angst: Not at first, but after knowing Kazuto for a while and his appeal for larger breasts, she has a little complex about her chest after getting in a heated debate with Sonshoukou in Souten no Haou.
  • The Ace: Downplayed. In the official artbook, she is ranked at the highest level possible in almost every attribute. Yes, she is pretty much better than everyone in every way, with the sole exception of raw strength.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Starting from Shin Koihime†Musou, she becomes notably nicer and lacks her misandry of the first game.
  • An Adventurer Is You: A debuffer. Her super techniques are predominantly status reducers and poison.
  • Anti-Hero: As the main heroine of Souten no Haou, she's depicted as a conqueror with great intentions but willing to resort to violence when things don't go her way.
  • Anti-Villain: With the exception of the first game and the first remake, she's the main antagonist and attempts to conquer all of China by force, thinking that rebuilding the country from scratch is the best way to end the civil war.
  • Big Bad: Upon meeting her for the first time in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, Yenren suggests she would become a threat to Go in the future. She's proven right when she effectively annexes and conquer Northern China, becoming the main antagonist of the story who attempts to invade Go.
  • Big Good: Of Shin Koihime Gi's route and Souten no Haou, being the leader of the country in which Kazuto works. Interestingly enough, she's also the closest thing the remakes have to a villain.
  • Brainwashed: In Koihime, she ends up brainwashed by Ukitsu before her final battle with Shoku, causing her generals to ask Kazuto to help them saving her, even if it means losing their war to Shoku.
  • Characterization Marches On: Following the second game onwards, her misandry is removed altogether and her Psycho Lesbian traits are downplayed, leaving her as an Anti-Villain willing to resort to force and attracted to beautiful women.
  • Childhood Friends: With Enshou, much to her dismay given how she is today.
  • Cleavage Window: Starting with Shin Koihime, her dresses include a keyhole in the chest.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: More subtle than most examples, given her pride and overall personality. One of the few explicit instances happens in one of her character events, where she witnesses Kyocho sitting on Kazuto's lap, and immediately takes him alone to the throne room and passionately kisses him. She also sits on his lap later on and whispers about its comfort.
  • Cope by Pretending: She insists that Kazuto's disappearance won't affect her at all in the future... And eventually breaks down crying in the final scene of Souten no Haou after he's gone.
  • Cultured Badass: She enjoys reading books with a personal preference for ancient philosophers, and likes to play songs and write poems in her free time.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: She defeated Soujin and Kii in a few seconds in a spar, easily reading their movements.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: To an extent: she has skulls in her hair and wields a Sinister Scythe (see also Girl with Psycho Weapon below), but she is easily one of the most noble and sympathetic characters in the series.
  • Deuteragonist: After the first game depicted her as a villain, she becomes the main heroine of the first remake, Souten no Haou.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Of the three main heroines of the series, Sousou ends up alone in Souten no Haou because of her unexpected victory in the Battle of Red Cliffs, changing history too much to the point of making Kazuto disappear. Thanks to the dimensional travelers, he's able to be brought back to her as seen in the end of Maiden Chronicles.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite her reputation as a dreaded conqueror, she prefers not to kill enemy generals and is absolutely outraged when she learns in Son Go no Ketsumyaku that Kyokou (Xu Gong), one of her vassals, assassinated Sonsaku against her orders, resulting in his execution.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: After Gi's defeat in the first game, she has a hard time understanding how she could have lost to the likes of Shoku when seeing their leader Kazuto, on top of her usual misandry. She gets to know him better and recognizes that his naive and forgiving personality is one of his strengths.
  • Fake Kill Scare: In order to test Keifa's loyalty after learning of her messing with troops, she swings her scythe around as if to kill her.
  • Final Boss: Of Son Go no Ketsumyaku, in which the combined forces of Go and Shoku fight her in a last battle to stop her conquest of China.
  • Foil: To Enshou. As Childhood Friends from noble families, they were both given high positions in the government before fighting each other. However, while Enshou likes to boasts about her noble lineage and massive army despite having average abilities, Sousou is more composed and don't use her family's reputation, on top of being a genius who nonetheless spends her time practicing despite her numerous talents.
  • Friendly Enemy: She's quite polite to her enemies Ryuubi and Sonsaku, even if they have different opinions about how one should rule China.
  • Genius Bruiser: She's one of the strongest warriors of Gi, and she's also proficient in many domains outside of the battlefield.
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon: Sousou packs a Sinister Scythe; combines with a fierce, dark Battle Aura if her Berserk Button is pressed.
  • Go-Getter Girl: On top of conquering all of China, she also strives to be perfect in every respect.
  • Graceful Loser: She surprisingly takes her few defeats pretty well.
    • Following her final defeat in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she admits her complete loss and acknowledges that she cannot claim the Mandate of Heaven, abandoning her conquest of China.
    • Upon losing her duel against Kan'u at the end of Ryuuki no Taimou, she concedes victory to Ryuubi, admitting that her ideals allowed her to defeat Gi.
  • Heel Realization: Near the end of Souten no Haou, she witnesses the courage and determination of the remnants of the Anti-Gi Alliance, and eventually accepts Ryuubi's ideals of coexistence following their duel, recruiting her and Sonsaku as advisors to help her govern the newly united China.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: She openly loves beautiful women, with Kazuto being the only man she's ever felt attracted to.
  • Insufferable Genius: As one of the most competent people of the series, it was a given.
    • In the original game, Sousou spends her time after her defeat in intellectual pursuits. She reads Shu's entire Royal Library, cooks delicious food just by observation, builds a distillery from scratch just by reading a book and annotates Sun Tzu just for fun. She also constantly reminds Kazuto how superior she is to him and to everyone else really. She spent an entire day criticizing food stalls and showing the cooks how it's really done.
    • In Souten no Haou, she starts playing with Kazuto on a whim while he was writing administrative documents, only to correct him every time he miswrites a word and ends up rewriting a brand new paper in his place.
  • Jack of All Trades: She has knowledge in poetry, singing, cooking and literature among many others.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Despite being able to continue fighting after being defeated twice, she gives up her ambition to unify China in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, knowing that prolonging the war will only make more people of Gi suffer.
  • Magnetic Hero: A lot of characters join her out of admiration (and sometimes love) for her, being the only proactive leader trying to change her country.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Breaks down after realizing that her short-lived attempt to conquer Go early in Son Go no Ketsumyaku results in Sonsaku's assassination.
  • The Needs of the Many: During her final confrontation with Ryuubi, she calls her out for being too short-sighted to think that keeping a status quo will persist, unlike using force to create a new China from scratch.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: She's the Mean to Ryuubi's Nice, with Sonsaku/Sonken being the In-Between. Her goal is the absolute conquest and domination of China, no matter the means necessary, and is quite a harsh Tsundere.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Shortly after defeating Enshou in the Guandu Campaign in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she rushes the conquest of northern China and starts with an invasion of Go, but many of her advisors question her decision as most of her soldiers aren't trained against Go's ambush tactics, and she eventually realizes her mistake after a series of crushing defeats.
  • Ojou Ringlets: Along with her drill pigtails, she has two small curls in front of her ears.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Among the four main heroines of the series, she stands out as the most antagonistic since most of the series' conflict comes from her actions.
  • Psycho Lesbian: In the first installment, she starts hitting on Kan'u fairly early on and suggests that if Kan'u is ever captured, she will break her and turn her into a Sex Slave. Averted in the later games however, notable with the absence of her misandry and most sadistic traits.
  • Rape, Pillage, and Burn: Defied. Despite her reputation as dreaded conqueror, she explicitly forbids her army to engage in looting and destruction of property, threatening anyone who disobeys with execution.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In Son Go no Ketsumyaku. After her final defeat, she plans on setting on another faraway land in the east, implied to be either Japan or the island of Taiwan, with the help of Himiko who transported her into a new, alternate history.
  • Signature Headgear: She wears very distinctive skull hair decorations on her pigtails.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: She considers Ryuubi's goal of mutual coexistence to be unrealistic and naive. After their final duel in Souten no Haou, she ultimately spares her and recruits her and Sonsaku as advisors to govern China, impressed by Ryuubi's determination to make her dream true, accepting her idealism as valid.
  • Supreme Chef: As seen in Koihime, she's able to make incredible dishes, easily surpassing your average restaurant. She also learned how to cook modern-era meals from Kazuto, wondering what's so good about the "Hamburger King Size".
  • Tsundere: Harsh type to Kazuto, with emphasis on verbal abuse and the Un-giver strategy. She also has a hard time admitting her feelings for him during the events of Souten no Haou.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Her sharp eyes emphasize her arrogance and pride.
  • Villain Has a Point: She considers Ryuubi her greatest rival due to her non-violent approach, acknowledging that her beliefs, while naive, are powerful enough to gather followers. In turn, Ryuubi also acknowledges that Sousou's heavy-handed methods are the quickest and safest way to end the civil war, but she doesn't believe in a country created through force and submission.
  • Warrior Poet: Similar to her historical counterpart, she wrote many books about her beliefs and personal experiences.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: To end the civil war following the fall of the Kan Empire, she begins a series of conquests to unite China under her rule, by either forcing governors to submit or fighting off other warlords. Ryuuki no Taimou also reveals that her intent to unify the country were also motivated by the looming threat of the non-Kan tribes roaming around the country as it was descending into civil war.
  • Worthy Opponent: Early in the remakes, after meeting everyone in the coalition, she comes to the conclusion that Sonsaku and Ryuubi are the strongest warlords, and will be her greatest enemies in the near future. Fast forward to the end of the civil war, she's proven right when Go and Shoku are the last two obstacles preventing her from fully unifying China.
  • Young Conqueror: Like her historical counterpart, Sousou is leading a conquest to unite all of China. With Kazuto's help, she can accomplish her goal while her historical counterpart failed.

Sousou's Cousins

Ka Sisters

    Tropes applying to both
  • Family Theme Naming: Kakouton's private name is Shunran, which is only slightly different from Kakouen's private name Shuuran.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry:
    • Most of Kakouton's left breast is exposed in her latest character design.
    • Kakouen's latest character design has her wearing a long detached sleeve on her left arm while her right arm is only covered by a fingerless opera glove. Also, most of her right breast is exposed.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Kakouton is the impulsive and reckless Foolish Sibling, Kakouen is the level-headed Responsible Sibling who keeps her older sister in check.
  • Kissing Cousins: Both are Sousou's cousins and lovers.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Kakouton is the hotheaded and aggressive Red Oni to Kakouen's coolheaded and calm Blue Oni. This is reflected by the color of their clothes.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: Both sisters were a qipao that split at the sides to show off their long legs.
  • Short Range Guy, Long Range Guy: Kakouton wields a sword and Kakouen fights with bow and arrows.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: The elder sister Kakouton is prideful and hot-headed, while the younger sister Kakouen is calm and reasonable.

"My name is Kakou Genjo! I am the blade of Sou Motoku, paving the way for my Lord's supremacy and rightful conquest of China!"

The elder of the Kakou sisters. She is a strong, prideful, hot-headed person yet is understanding and loyal to Sousou whom she loves and understands her feelings.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Gen-chan", courtesy of Chouryou.
  • Black Swords Are Better: Her weapon of choice is a black-clad bastard sword.
  • Blood Knight: As Gi's most aggressive general, Kakouton plays the role of that faction's Blood Knight. That does not preclude a strong sense of honor and loyalty however.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She gets extremely jealous if other people catch Sousou's eye, which is particularly troublesome when she's part of a harem. She also really hates to see Kazuto gaining Sousou's affections, although that's partially because she also wants a piece of him.
  • Dumb Muscle: She's easily the strongest warrior of Gi, but far from the smartest.
  • Establishing Character Moment: She's introduced quickly as one of the bodyguards of Sousou, and immediately jumps on Kazuto with death threats thinking he's a wizard from the Wu Hu Tribes, showing her as a simpleminded yet fervent follower of Sousou.
  • Eye Scream: Just like the figure she's named after, Kakoton loses her left eye after she eats her own eyeball.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She starts wearing a butterfly eyepatch after losing her left eye.
  • First-Name Basis: In her final character event ln Souten no Haou, she finally calls Kazuto by his first name instead of Hongou.
  • Forehead of Doom: She has a very noticeable forehead because of her straightened back hair.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a notable stand of hair coming from her forehead, and she's not the smartest general around. Strangely enough, it's shorter in the Kakumei remakes.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: She was practically Sousou-sexual until Kazuto came along.
  • "Open!" Says Me: In her first character events, she didn't know of any other way to open doors than busting them open until Kazuto taught her about knocking on doors.
  • Tsundere: She uses violence to hide her growing attraction towards Kazuto.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Sousou, even by the standards of Gi's main generals who are ALL slavishly devoted to her. Kakouton has been around Sousou ever since she was a relatively unknown commander, and dedicated her body and soul to her goal, cutting every enemy and obstacle in her way.
  • Worthy Opponent: She recognizes Chouryou as her most formidable opponent when fighting her during the coalition against Toutaku. So much that she immediately defects to Sousou after her defeat.

"Good grief...Please refrain from your bad habits, Master Karin."

The younger of the Kakou sisters. Unlike her big sister Kakouton, she's always calm and composed.

  • Aloof Archer: She fits the stoic and coolheaded personality connected to the archer archetype very well.
  • Berserk Button: She refuses to recognize Kakouton as her sister when the latter eats her cherries without permission.
  • The Brigadier: She serves as the level-headed commander of Gi's armies in contrast to her out-of-control sister and psychotic strategist.
  • The Conscience: She more often than not acts as Kakouton's guardian of sorts to prevent her from doing anything rash.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: She's the more reserved of the Ka Sisters. Fittingly, her hair bangs cover the right side of her face.
  • Master Archer: Although her mastery of the bow is not as emphasized as Kouchuu's, she's a highly skilled archer.
Shuuran: "Hah...! There's nothing I can't shoot at!"''
  • The Men First: As one of Sousou's top generals, she could eat wherever she wants but prefers to move among the men and goes to lower-key bars to drink.
  • Not So Stoic: She loses her usual demeanor when her sister took an arrow in the eye in the middle of a duel with Chouryou.
  • Only Sane Woman: She bemoans having to deal with the conflicting personalities in Gi's army and covering up all their foibles while out drinking.
  • The Stoic: Downplayed. She's mostly calm and composed but she is able to crack a smile whenever she feels like it.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Despite not showing it very much because her naturally cool and reserved personality, she has a deep love for her sister and Sousou, and actually enjoys working for the latter.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Similar to Chouun's obsession with menma, Kakouen loves cherries.

Sou Cousins

    Tropes applying to the three

"Then we'll all get undressed! If we do it together, there's nothing to be ashamed of!"

One of the cousins of Sousou, first introduced in Eiyuutan. She's known among her peers for her ever-going cheerfulness and positivity, making her quite good at motivating troops. However, she lacks common sense and often has her cousin Soujun helping her with social interactions, and she has the tendency to take her clothes off whenever she feels uncomfortable.

She fights with a single-handed sword with some similarities to Kakouton, and her dream is to become a strong female general who can be relied upon like her.

  • Be Yourself: Sousou makes her the commander in one of the first skirmishes against the Ba Clan. Excited to be in charge of the entire army, she makes a lot of bad decisions and doesn't listen to any of her advisors, suffering a swift defeat later on. Depressed and unable to collect her thoughts, Kazuto then reminds her not to try to be someone else since she doesn't have any skills in commanding nor military tactics. She realizes her mistake and eventually listens to her advisors, knowing that her true talent lies in motivating her troops.
  • The Ditz: She has difficulty grasping some everyday concepts such as modesty and her vocabulary is very simple.
  • Dumb Blonde: She has the same blonde hair as her cousin and is the sole airhead in the Sou family.
  • Dumb Muscle: Taking after her idol Kakouton, she's a physical fighter but doesn't shine by her intelligence.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: She wears a single knee-high sock on her right leg. She also wears a rose on her left ankle.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The foolish to Soujun's responsible.
  • Genki Girl: Her positive attitude and speeches about doing your best is what makes her a good commander.
  • Gone Horribly Right: In one event, she acts as a replacement for Kazuto as the Captain of the City Guard on Nagi's request, and quickly drags along Maou and Sawa despite their laziness for work. The day after, both of them became extremely aware of their surroundings and take their job too seriously to the point they end up dragging along Nagi and Kazuto instead.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's a blonde with a ceaselessly cheerful and positive attitude.
  • Hidden Depths: One of Rin's character events reveals she can perfectly imitate Sousou's demeanor, down to her tone and mannerisms.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She has no understanding of shame or modesty when it comes to nudity, so she doesn't realize what her naked body can make men feel.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her top barely covers her breasts and exposes all of her abdomen.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: She's often found sleeping naked in high places.
  • Regal Ringlets: She wears her hair in a curled side-ponytail. She also has Ojou Ringlets with the two small curls in front of her ears.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Keifa's abrasiveness and usual sarcasms don't work on her, who doesn't understand irony.
  • Sleeps in the Nude: She likes to sleep naked, to the dismay of her friends and particularly Kazuto.
  • Verbal Tic: Most of her sentences end with "-ssu".

"Everyone, please follow my lead!"

Another of Sousou's cousins and Soujin's younger sister. Among the four cousins, she's the main healer and the gentlest of the family. She has also a difficult job in contrast with her personality, being the leader of a dogmatic and strong-minded army under her service, the "Tiger Leopard Horsemen".

  • Big Little Sister: While she's the younger sister, she looks and acts the part of the older one towards Soujin.
  • Cleavage Window: Her dress has a large opening exposing her cleavage.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: She serves as Soujin's guardian because of her sister's ditzy personality.
  • Flowers of Femininity: She's the ladylike and gentle healer of the Sou cousins. Appropriately, she wears a pink flower at the left side of her hair.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's a very gentle and caring woman. She also shares the same beautiful blonde hair as her family.
  • The Medic: Her main skills are her healing moves.
  • Regal Ringlets: She has multiple ringlets in the back.
  • Showgirl Skirt: She wears a minidress with two long tails at the back.

"Please, don't forget that every single swing of any sword and spear costs money!"

Sousou's other cousin who is in charge of Gi's economy and is very noisy about money saving. Like Sousou, she loves girls, but she prefers them younger...

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: In one of her events, Kazuto finds her asleep when asking her for administrative documents. Aware of her harsh everyday job, he chooses to put his uniform to cover her and patiently waiting for her to recover. Upon waking up, she immediately kicks him out, believing he has made a move on her while she was asleep...Until she learns the truth from his subordinate Gakushin, and gradually opens up to him onwards.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She acts jealous when Kazuto gets too close to other girls.
  • Comedic Lolicon: Downplayed. She loves little girls because they're cute and enjoys dressing them up in cute clothes.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She's initially cold to Kazuto as she's to all men. She eventually warms up to Kazuto after working with him as an official.
  • Does Not Like Men: Although not as much as Jun'iku, she dislikes men for being "scary" and not cute like little girls.
  • The Fashionista: She likes fashion and usually buys lots of clothes for herself and Jokou, regardless of the latter's actual consent.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Part of her hair is tied up in twintails.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She's always seen carrying a stuffed rabbit which she uses as a bag, storing various items for her personal use, such as money, sweets, or makeup tools.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: She adores little girls and dislikes men in general, but Kazuto manages to include her in his harem.

  • Tsundere: Harsh type. She's an abrasive and somewhat haughty girl, but she can show she cares about her family and Kazuto once she begins to feel something for him.

"D-Don't call me a kid! You're one yourself!"

A small, young girl with great strength and a large appetite so strong that when it comes to food, she'll take on bears, tigers, and anything else she can think of. She wields a Flail, with a handle resembling a kendama chained to a huge iron ball with spikes. Despite her young age, she has a strong sense of justice and isn't afraid of any challenges before her.

She's first met by Sousou when defending her village from bandits and fighting on her own, eventually trading blows with Kakouton, who mistook her for one. After learning of the circumstances behind the bandits'' attacks, she eventually joins Gi's army after proving her worth. She quickly bonds with Kazuto and Kakouton, looking up to her as her master.

"My name is Ten'i. But people tend to know me as..."Akurai" Ten'i!"

Kyocho's best friend from her childhood days and sworn rival, who joined Gi's army after a chance encounter with Sousou in the restaurant she worked. Albeit timid and reserved at first, she can easily display her true strength in times of danger to protect her friends, as seen with her giant yoyo-shaped weapon. Her nickname comes from Sousou's suggestion, who likened her to the old warlord of the Shang Dyntasty, Akurai.

Outside of battle, she usually works as a cook in restaurants, and she has extraordinary cooking skills, to the point of being acknowledged as such by Sousou, who's no slouch herself.

  • Best Friend: Kyocho has no closest or oldest friend than Ten'i.
  • Chef of Iron: She's one of Sousou's generals and one of the greatest cooks of Gi.

  • Showgirl Skirt: Like Kyocho, she wears a knee-length skirt that only covers the back of her legs as part of her battle outfit.
  • Supreme Chef: She's renowned as one of the finest cooks of Gi, as seen in Souten no Haou when she (re)created croquettes based on a drawing made by Kazuto.

A wandering warrior met by Kazuto after falling from the sky in Souten no Haou, having fled her former corrupt city to look for a job. "Geez, why is this world full of empty-headed idiots?"

A former strategist of Enshou who volunteered to work for Sousou, having a huge crush on her. She's first noticed when she purposely decreased Gi's rations before their first battle against the Yellow Turbans, prompting Sousou to test her determination by sending her into battle despite her dangerous action.

She quickly becomes Sousou's trusted advisor and strategist, happily leaning at her side and does not mind being teased and punished, being quite the pervert. However, she's also very irritable towards everyone who shares a peculiar bond with Sousou, especially the Kakou sisters and Kazuto, whom she hates with every fiber of her being.

  • A-Cup Angst: She absolutely detests people with large breasts. In Moe Shouden, she forms the Lack-Breast Party to voice her dismay.
  • Biting the Handkerchief: In response to Sousou showing apparent affection to other women (or men, for that matter), rather than her.
  • Brains and Bondage: She's one of the most brilliant people of Gi, and she's also a huge masochist.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Like other girls in Sousou's harem, she hates it when Sousou is giving special attention to someone else. This causes her to come at odds with the Kakou sisters. After Sousou takes a liking to Kazuto, Jun'iku is so jealous that she often showers him with barrages of insults and tries to set up traps for him to fall into.
  • Does Not Like Men: She bears a strong hatred towards men, but especially Kazuto.
  • Establishing Character Moment: One of her very first scenes in the first game shows her kissing Karin's foot, showing an intense devotion and submission to her.
  • Extreme Doormat: Her default personality, where the object of her affections is concerned.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Because of her abrasiveness towards everyone who isn't Sousou, no one really likes her but all acknowledge her talent as a teacher and strategist.
  • Hair Intakes: The two "cat ears" that are part of her hairdo.
  • Insufferable Genius: She's very confident in her abilities as a war strategist, often showing a condescending attitude towards those who don't measure up to her intelligence, especially Kazuto and Shunran.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Never questions her Queen's orders, even if they're unreasonable or downright suicidal, as seen during Karin's failed attempt to invade Go early in Son Go no Ketsumyaku.
Keifa: "My Queen is always right. There's no way she can ever be wrong."
  • The Not-Love Interest: She's one of the few major characters who don't fall in love with Kazuto in any of the plot-driven games.
  • Questionable Consent: In Souten no Haou, she hates Kazuto's guts for being Sousou's Love Interest and all of her sexual intercourses with him are solely on Sousou's orders.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She never shows real attraction for Kazuto because she only has eyes for Sousou.
  • The Strategist: Her occupation in Sousou's faction.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: She's a total masochist, and loves to have Sousou dominate her. She will even fail Sousou's orders on purpose in order to be punished. However, Sousou soon finds out the true intentions and orders Kazuto to carry out the punishments so that Jun'iku won't enjoy them.
  • Trap Master: She tries to set up traps for Kazuto after their first time, but she ends up falling into them herself.
  • Undying Loyalty: She's the only person more devoted to Sousou than Kakouton.

"Our Queen Sousou is like a majestic sun: She's strong, warm, and has the power to bring life back to every corner of this country. It is up to Fuu to support this sun with her own hands..."

An absent-minded and very elusive girl who's also a wandering genius strategist. After seeing her successful repel of Enshou's forces during the Battle of Guandu, she's noticed by Sousou and ends up recruited in Gi's army alongside her partner and guardian Rin. She also has a tendency to sleep at any given time including battles, to the dismay of Rin and everyone else in the army, but her strategies, while unortodox, are always spot-on regardless.

  • Affectionate Nickname: After taking a liking to Kazuto, she exclusively calls him 'onii-san'.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite her lethargic demeanor and eccentricities, Tei'iku is highly insightful and perceptive as a strategist.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She seems to be in her own little world, to the point she often sleeps in a middle of a conversation, and she treats her puppet as a sentient being.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Surprisingly, she's a mutual one to her friend Rin, as her presence prevents her to die from blood loss when she goes on sexual fantasies.
  • Consulting Mister Puppet: She sometimes talks with her puppet Houkei for advice.
  • Cute Oversized Sleeves: Her dress has very long sleeves that look cute in her.
  • Deadpan Snarker: As Houkei, she likes to mock people.
  • Ditzy Genius: While she's one of the best strategists of Gi, she lacks common sense in everything else.
  • Expressive Accessory: She wears a head ornament that somehow reflects her emotions.
  • Faux Paw: She tries to imitate a cat to make Kazuto notice her in one of her events, jealous of Rin who had her first time with him.
  • Fell Asleep Standing Up: Usually what happens when she goes on a conversation for too long.
  • The Gadfly: She likes to say outrageous things at random with Houkei to get a good reaction from people, which usually involves sex.
  • Oral Fixation: She is known for always carrying a lollipop.
  • Sleepyhead: She speaks very slowly as if she's always drowsy and can actually fall asleep at any given time.
  • The Strategist: Behind what appears to be some sleepyhead is actually a brilliant strategist rivaling even Jun'iku, to her dismay.
  • Ventriloquism: She sometimes communicates using her puppet Houkei with ventriloquism, whom she considers another person entirely.

"Even if the perfect and flawless strategy existed, how would you implement it? You need to consider every resource at your disposition."

A bespectacled female strategist often seen with Tei'iku, who has a deep admiration for Sousou. In contrast to her partner, she is a very serious person who's always at Sousou's side, similar to Jun'iku. She's also quite the pervert and has many sexual fantasies who causes her to nosebleed a lot.

  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: She has to keep Tei'iku in check because of her Sleepyhead tendencies and erratic behaviour.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: More often than not, she has explicit sexual fantasies and tends to nosebleed a lot, especially if Sousou is involved.
  • Mistaken for Dying: Her personal Running Gag: if she thinks of the slightest perverted thought, a Nosebleed ensues, leading to High-Pressure Blood. So frequently, in fact, she's often found passed out on the ground in a pool of blood, and people think she's dead.
  • Showgirl Skirt: The skirt of her dress splits at the front to show off her legs.
  • Stocking Filler: She wears thigh-high stockings with suspenders.
  • The Strategist: While she's not as intelligent as Tei'iku, she's doing her best to assist her and actively seeks to better herself when joining Gi.

"Gakushin Squad, move forward!"

A member of the City Guard, working under Kazuto during his time in Gi. She's a strict general who believes in order and discipline, and as such has a tough time keeping her comrades Riten and Ukin under control, using brute force if necessary whenever they slack off. Deep down however, she also wants to be recognized as a woman despite her introvert personality, and envy her two outgoing friends.

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: She's the only female general of the series who fights unarmed.
  • Berserk Button: While she's mostly calm and collected in work, she can go ballistic if she ever sees people slacking off during work.
  • Braids of Action: Her hair is tied back in a long braid.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: She usually has to keep her eccentric partners Riten and Ukin in check.
  • The Comically Serious: Most of her humor comes from her lack of emotions. In one event, when Sousou reprimands the city police force, everyone is scared while Gakushin keeps her unexpressive face and cannot speak at all.
  • Covered with Scars: Her face and the uncovered skin of her body have several nasty-looking scars.
  • Ki Manipulation: She has the unique ability to wield her ki and use it as a weapon for fights, mainly with energy projectiles.
  • Roundhouse Kick: One of her special techniques. So awesome, it has its own CG where her foot is on fire.
  • The Stoic: She's one of the most serious characters seen in the series, and usually keeps a neutral expression in most situations.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Her sharp eyes symbolize her no-nonsense, all-business type personality.

"What kind of machine makes a hella noise like that? There must be a flaw somewhere..."

A member of the City Guard alongside Gakushin and Ukin, whom she's best friends with ever before they joined Gi. She has a very friendly and goofy personality, making her the go-getter girl of the trio on top of being quite voluptuous given her short stature.

Outside of battles, she's also a mechanic with tremendous skills.

  • Bamboo Technology: Literally. One of her favorite inventions is a machine able to automatically knit bamboo baskets.
  • The Engineer: The Combat Engineer type. Her weapons are all her own inventions.
  • Explosive Results: Usually what happens to most of her inventions, including the bamboo basket machine.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She created cutting-edge weapons and inventions of varying usefulness, with the most performant able to turn the tides in the battlefield.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her hair is tied up in pigtails.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: She wears goggles around her neck.
  • Overly Long Name: The second version of her bamboo basket machine, "全自動竹籠編み装置改二", which can be roughly translated as "Fully Automatic Bamboo Basket Knitting Machine 2.0"
  • Stocking Filler: She wears garters to hold up her detached pant legs.
  • This Is a Drill: Her signature weapon is a spear with a giant working drill on the end.
  • Too Many Belts: Her leggings are literally held up by straps that attach to her two belts, which she wears in lieu of actual trousers.
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: She walks around in a stripped bikini top.
  • Wrench Wench: She's a mechanic who makes strange machines; made hotter by her breasts (which are HUGE for her build) and her Stripperiffic outfit.

"Now listen here you little shits! If ANY of you slow down this fuckin' squad, everyone will get punished, DOUBLE TIME!!"

Riten's partner in crime in the City Guard, much to the dismay of Gakushin. Unlike her other two friends, she dislikes fighting and prefers to enjoy life as a normal girl and spends her time buying clothes and getting to know the citizens.

With some help from Kazuto, she grows accustomed to the training of troops to eventually become a dreaded commander in Gi's army thanks to his special training methods from "American movies".

  • Braids of Action: She wears her hair up in a braided side ponytail at the right side.
  • Cleavage Window: Her latest character design has her wearing a new dress with a cleavage cutout.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: After failing to properly lead her troops, she asks Kazuto to train her. As he only knows about the trope on American movies, she ends up as a genuine drill sergeant thanks to his advice.
  • Dual Wielding: She fights with two rapiers.
  • The Fashionista: One of her hobbies outside of battles is to buy trendy clothes with her friends.
  • The Heart: This is basically Ukin's role when with her two friends Riten and Gakushin.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a strand of standing atop her head, and she's the least smart of the trio.
  • Showgirl Skirt: Along with a miniskirt, she wears a knee-length skirt that only covers the back of her legs and is held in place by her belt.
  • Underboobs: Her top shows off the undersides of her breasts.
  • Verbal Tic: Most of her sentences end with 'なの', 'nano'.

Advisors

    Tropes applying to both
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Because her daughter refuses to see her, Chinkei uses Kazuto as a middleman for them and gives him medicine for her daughter's chronic illness. It actually saves her life, and at night she even goes quietly near her house to watch over her and pretending to see the stars. After getting medication from her mother following her fainting from her chronic disease, Chintou starts frequenting her mother more and comes to the conclusion than her mother dearly loves her in spite of everything.
  • Idiot Hair: Both have a strand of hair that sticks out atop their hair and slopes backwards, but Chinkei's is much longer.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: The manipulative and teasing Chinkei is estranged from her more serious daughter Chintou, who doesn't like her personality.

"My objective is to find the greatest tree that will protect this land from strife."

The governor of the Yuzhou province, introduced in Eiyuutan then Souten no Haou as an ally of Sousou. In the midst of the civil war ravaging the country, she chose to keep her province independent, waiting for the true ruler of China to rise. Following the fall of the province to the Yellow Turban Rebellion and its liberation by Sousou, she sells the province to her and joins her army as an advisor for Gi, believing her to be the next ruler of China.

  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: Despite having a grown daughter, she's still young looking.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Upon meeting Kazuto for the first time, we quickly get a view of her chest, as he cannot help but watch it for a few seconds.
  • Cleavage Window: Her dress has a huge opening in the chest area that shows off her very impressive cleavage.
  • Femme Fatale: It's heavily implied in her official description and in-game that she became a governor by manipulating several people into giving her power and influence, causing her daughter to stop hanging out with her outside of official meetings.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Despite her seemingly sweet behavior, she's actually a cunning and dangerous politician who gets her way by sweet-talking influential people, to the dismay of her daughter Chintou, who's estranged from her.
  • Marshmallow Hell: She shoves her massive buxom into Kazuto's face in her character events by "accidentally" falling into him.
  • My Eyes Are Up Here: Her Cleavage Window causes Kazuto to be distracted, prompting her to ask him to stop looking (while teasing him for it).
  • Sexy Slit Dress: She wears a leg-slit dress that reveals her right leg up to well above her thighs.
  • The Tease: She mercilessly teases Kazuto on their first meeting with her huge assets.

"Endless fighting is inefficient. I'd rather have everyone join me to work on the fields and cultivate lands."

Chinkei's daughter, who's estranged from her because of her personality and dabbling in politics. Unlike her mother however, she's not good at social interactions, coming off as shy but studious and very sensible with rural labor.

After the selling of the Yuzhou province to Sousou, she began working for Gi as an advisor for agricultural management.

  • Caring Gardener: From a very young age, she spent her time helping with agriculture and crops, making her quite loved by the peasantry of Yuzhou.
  • Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Her mother is a sly politician, while she's a shy and very honest peasant.
  • Odd Friendship: With the Ka sisters, who mostly mocked her at first, but it eventually developed into a friendship after working together in the local market, despite their vastly different backgrounds and social standings.
  • Pointless Band-Aid: She has a band-aid on her right knee.
  • Reverse Psychology: She tries to get the Ka sisters work in the fields to no results, and upon seeing their refusal, allows them to quit manual labor to live in a city...And get them to work as butchers again.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's shy around people.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: She's one of the advisors of her faction and wears glasses.
  • Tan Lines: She has a darker skin than her mother caused by tanning, because of her everyday work in fields.

Go (Wu) Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/go_12.png

One of the Three Kingdoms, also known as the Son Go Faction. First founded by Sonken Bundai as a small country with Kengyou (Jianye) as its capital city, it eventually became powerful enough to have its own army and set of generals. Following the Yellow Turbans Rebellion, Sonken decides to start a conquest to gain her independence by fighting her neighbor Ryuuyou (Liu Yao), but later loses her life in an ambush by the warlord Kouso, leaving her daughters Sonsaku Hakufu, Sonken Chuubou and Sonshoukou to perpetuate her legacy and ensure Go's independence.

    In General
  • Ambiguously Brown: Half of Go's generals have a darker skin than the rest of the cast as a result of living in Southern China, known for its subtropical climate.
  • The Good Kingdom: Played With. Sonken Bundai, the original founder of Go, had goals of countrywide conquest similar to Sousou, but her status as a small province prevented her to do much until the Yellow Turbans Rebellion. After her death, her daughter Sonsaku vowed to follow her dream, but her meeting with Ryuubi casts doubts on her willingness to conquer like her mother. Once Sonken Chuubou became the new Queen after her unexpected death, she doesn't know how to govern Go at first, but eventually decides of a compromise between Ryuubi and Sousou's ideals: She embraces her role as a Benevolent Boss, accepts Ryuubi's idea of coexistence, but prefers to kick Sousou out, deeming her too dangerous, and instead proposes to have two kingdoms instead of three.
  • Hereditary Republic: Taking after Sonken Bundai's will, Go is solely ruled by the Son family, with the order of succession starting from the oldest daughter.
  • Puppet State: Starting as a rival of Ryuuyou (Liu Yao) at the beginning of ''Son Go no Ketsumyaku", Sonken eventually starts her conquest by attacking him and won, only to die in the process and Enjutsu taking the opportunity to vassalize it again. Her daughter Sonsaku spent several weeks waiting for an opportunity, and succeeds in achieving actual independence.
  • Rags to Riches: Once a small independent country, it grown to be powerful enough to gain independence from its vassals, and eventually becoming one of the Three Kingdoms.

Son Family

    Tropes applying to the family
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/son_family.png
A picture of the Son family, taken with an improvised camera made by Maou.Note

The Go Kingdom is led by the Son family of warlords, through a hereditary system. At the beginning of Son Go no Ketsumyaku, Sonken Bundai (Yenren) leads the country, with her three daughters being in line for the throne. Kazuto would share a special relationship with the Son family during the events of the game, to the point of looking up to Yenren as his own mother.

  • Badass Family: All of the four members are warriors who can easily defeat dozens of soldiers on the battlefield, with a special mention to Sheren and Yenren who are known as terrifying forces of nature on the battlefield.
  • Disappeared Dad: The identity of the father of the family is unknown, and Yenren is very evasive when asked about it in Eiyuutan 4, instead answering that "she just happened to have a daughter without knowing how".
  • Family Theme Naming: Doubling as Floral Theme Naming. All of the Son family members' true names contain the kanji of lotus.
    • Yenren means "Flame Lotus".
    • Sheren means "Snow Lotus".
    • Renfa means "Lotus Flower".
    • Shaoren means "Little Lotus".
  • Sexy Slit Dress: Except for Shaoren, the women of the Son family wear leg-slit dresses that reveal their legs.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: The four of them basically look like Pokemon evolutions of one another.

"The blood of Son Go will never die! Don't be afraid, the spirits of our fallen comrades will protect us from any threat!"

The queen of Go Kingdom, the eldest sister of the Son family, and leader of the Go faction. In Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she's instead the heiress of Sonken Bundai, her mother and founder of Go.

After finding Kazuto in the plains at the request of her mother, she quickly grows attached to him and acts as his protective big sister since he's not a fighter.

An always cheerful albeit childish person at times, she also enjoys drinking with anyone regardless of their status. Yet, despite being the heiress of Go, she often admonishes her mother for being too careless on the battlefield and fighting alone, but she herself also enjoys challenging strong foes to test her limits, inheriting her bloodlust.

  • Abdicate the Throne: In ''Eiyuutan 4'', set in the aftermath of the Three Kingdoms with Kazuto at her side, she decides to give up the throne of Go and hands it to her younger sister Renfa. Her reasoning is as follows: Her Blood Knight tendencies and strong personality would not fit in an era of peace, and as the ruler of Go, made herself numerous enemies during the war. As such, she would prefer to give the throne to her gentle and mature sister, whose well-liked personality, temperence and skill for administration comes at the right time for Go to grow even more.
  • Amazon Chaser: She's prone to confess her feelings to everyone who gives her a good fight, such as Taishiji or Kannei.
  • Ascended Extra: In the first game, she wasn't even alive and only served as a motivator for the characters of her faction. In Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she's the main heroine until her death in the two thirds of the game, leaving her sister Renfa to take her place.
  • Blood Knight: Taking after her mother, she's driven by a desire to fight strong people, but she's also aware that such a thing would not help her to build a country in peacetime. As seen during her meeting with Sousou in Eiyuutan 4, she quickly admits it when the two discuss the future of the three Kingdoms.
Sousou: "I don't want to burden the people with the hardships of war yet again. Futhermore, the fall of Kan and the invasion of the Goko left a huge mark on this country."
Sheren: "That's right...And after all these years, we finally got to see an era of peace. But maintaining it is even harder, you know."
Sousou: "Is that meant to be a warning?"
Sheren: "I'm talking about myself, since I'm a battle-loving idiot. But when I look at my sister, Ryuubi and you, I think you're way stronger than me."
  • Big Good: After Yenren's death, she takes over her role as the leader of Go.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Similar to her mother, she's a fierce fighter and fearless war leader on the battlefield, but she otherwise lacks common sense with other people outside of battles. It becomes important in Eiyuutan 4, in which she decides to give up the throne, aware that she lacks the qualities for leading Go in a time of peace due to her personality. She's also revealed to be quite bad in writing.
  • Childhood Friends: With Shuuyu ever since they were kids, eventually becoming lovers when reaching adulthood.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: In one event of Son Go no Ketsumyaku, Kazuto introduces her and Shuuyu to the concept of public schools and democracy from his modern world. Unlike the other two, she's heavily against it, thinking that giving too much knowledge to a large number of people might cause them to rebel and create factions within the country. She does acknowledge the benefits of having a more educated populace, but fears that selfish individuals among them would try to overthrow Go in the name of freedom.
  • Deuteragonist: She becomes the main heroine and love interest of Kazuto in the second remake, Son Go no Ketsumyaku.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Her: As she was preparing to push back Gi's army following their first invasion of Go, she's struck by a poisoned arrow shot by assassins sent by Kyokou (Xu Gong), a resentful and former commander of Go. The following days, her life slowly fades away and she finally dies following a decisive battle against Gi's forces, having used all of her remaining strength.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Hours before her death, she manages to deliver a Rousing Speech to her troops despite being unable to walk for long.
  • Establishing Character Moment: She's introduced as the eldest daughter of Sonken Bundai in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, who's bitter about her mother and quickly engages in a duel against an unknown female general, before boldly declaring her love for her because she was able to give her a good fight, and later on she's seen pouting and complains about not being able to recruit her to her side.
  • Facial Markings: Depending on the installment, she has a tattoo in the center of her forehead.
  • The Gadfly: Taking after her mother, she likes to prank people to get a good reaction of them.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Upon dying, she cracks a last smile to her friends, trusting her sister and Shuuyu to preserve the Son family legacy in her place.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Among her closest friends, she's shown to be exuberant and quite childish, with a huge fondness for alcohol.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: In order to make her stronger, her mother used to kidnap her and go on improvised trips in the harsh jungles of Go to do hunting, fishing and sleeping in the wild. She also has to deal with her mother randomly attacking her on the streets, thinking she's not aware enough of her surroundings.
  • Hime Cut: She's a Chinese queen with parted blunt bangs, cheek-length sidelocks, and classic length straight hair.
  • I Owe You My Life: She very reluctantly admits that Enjutsu did save the entire Go Kingdom (even though for selfish reasons) and as a result lets her go alive after her defeat.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Shortly after her death, Meirin literally starts dying due to her grief causing her to develop a terminal disease.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her death has one of the biggest impacts on Meirin.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: The In-Between to Ryuubi's Nice and Sousou's Mean, being a Blood Knight on the battlefield, but nice and caring in private.
  • Parental Abandonment: Sonsaku's mom Yenren dies early on; while it affects her sisters just as much, Sonsaku is the most affected as her direct heir and being the daughter she took the most time raising.
  • Posthumous Character: In the first Koihime visual novel, she is already dead by the time the events of the story take place and she had such an effect on the main generals of Go that her legacy became the driving force for their bid for conquest.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She has light pink hair that goes well with her cheerful and friendly personality.
  • Rousing Speech: Manages to address her troops and urge them on to victory even after being seriously wounded. This is, of course, accompanied by suitably awesome music written specifically for that scene.
  • Sex Is Violence: When fighting strong foes, she enjoys it a lot to the point of likening it to sex.
  • Sideboob: Her sideless dress reveals the outer sides of her breasts.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's noticeably one of the tallest characters in the series and her portraits are drawn in ways that emphasize her legs and chest.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: In the main story of Shin Koihime and Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she shortly dies after proclaiming Go's independence from Enjutsu. However, the False Prophet scenario offers a new possibility in which she survives her assassination attempt and ends up with Kazuto's child, alongside Meirin who also survives.
  • Vapor Wear: Her revealing dress makes it obvious she isn't wearing a bra.
  • Walking the Earth: After giving the throne to Renfa in Eiyuutan 4, she decides to explore the rest of China to discover more of the outside world. With Meirin, Rian and Kazuto at her side, their trip would lead them to visit several cities in Shoku and Gi, meeting familiar faces and enemies along the way.
  • Warrior Princess: Before Yenren's demise, she was the leading commander of the forces of Go, and shared the Blood Knight tendencies of her mother by engaging in battle with strong warriors.
  • Weakness Turns Her On: One of the reasons she likes Kazuto, as his weakness triggers her sisterly instincts and makes her goal to protect him from harm. After he goes through intense training to become stronger, she complains a bit about him being "less cute than before" as he's able to fight on his own.
  • Wistful Amnesia: She harbors romantic feelings for the alternate Kazuto of Maiden Chronicles, feeling she knows him somehow without knowing why, which can be an effect of their relationship in the Son Go no Ketsumyaku timeline.
  • Womanchild: Outside of battles, she spends her time complaining about her mother's unorthodox education and is prone to sulking when things don't go her way.

"Son Go's power relies on its people. As long as everyone believes in us, this country will not fall."

Princess of Go, second sister of the Son family. In contrast to her mother and older sister, she is a serious and inflexible person who rarely shows her emotions in public, but this causes her to be lonely as she seeks out friends of her age.

She often tries to act more mature than her actual age, partly because she wants to live up to the name of the Son family built by her mother before her. Everyone else in Go understands this, causing them to look after her much to her embarassment.

In Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she can't hide her confusion and dissatisfaction after being made the bride of a unknown "Messenger from Heaven" by the name of Kazuto, but she eventually befriends him and becomes his closest confident.

  • Be Yourself: Upon becoming the queen of Go in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she has no idea how governing works and tries to emulate her sister, but she can't bring herself to be the passionate Blood Knight she was, causing her to make bad decisions. She's eventually talked down by Kazuto and Taishiji and realizes she isn't Sonsaku, and instead chooses to be a different ruler than her.
  • Benevolent Boss: While she doesn't have the same knack for battles and conquest unlike her mother and sister before her, she's liked by everyone in the army, espcially the older generals who treat her like a little sister.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Unprepared to be the Queen of Go unlike Sonsaku, she has a hard time governing the country at first and attempted to manage everything alone, unwilling to listen to her subordinates out of fear she would be perceived as "weaker" than her sister.
  • Cool Crown: She wears a distinctive crown in the battlefield.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: While initially cold towards Kazuto, doubting his legitimacy as a "Messenger from Heaven", she eventually opens up after he proves his worth during the naval battle against Kannei and later learning more about his personality when spending time together.
  • Facial Markings: Like Sonsaku, Sonken has a tattoo in the center of her forehead depending on the installment.
  • Hidden Depths: As shown in Son Go no Ketsumyaku and Eiyuutan 4, her strength lies in administration and leadership, which is more than welcome in peacetime, unlike Sheren who's quite good as a war leader, but doesn't fare well with the rest. She's also said to have the most beautiful writing among the generals of Go.
  • Hime Cut: She's the princess and later queen of the Go Kingdom. Her hairstyle consists of parted blunt bangs, neck-length sidelocks and long straight hair falling down her back, although she cuts most of it after her older sister dies.
  • Important Haircut: She cuts her hair after her sister Sonsaku dies.
  • Middle Child Syndrome: As the middle Son sister, she lacks the charisma of Sonsaku and the cheerfulness of Sonshoukou, making her a serious and hard-working, yet lonely person.
  • Mutual Masquerade: In Souten no Haou, she leads Go's army against Gi's army led by Kazuto. She actually meets him a few times between battles and befriends him, believing him to be a merchant of sorts and unaware of his true identity.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Due to her lack of experience in the battlefield, she's easily defeated by Kan'u in Koihime.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: She's also the In-Between to Ryuubi and Sousou, but she takes a different path from her sister, instead being a cold and stoic commander on the battlefield instead of a Blood Knight.
  • Only Sane Woman: Among the Son family, she's the only one with common sense and the most reserved woman, who doesn't overtly talk about her relationship with Kazuto.
  • Reluctant Ruler: She's all too aware that she isn't even nearly the charismatic and inspiring queen her older sister Sonsaku was.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Unlike her mother and sisters, she's more a Proper Lady, but she's nonetheless a warrior who managed to defeat her friend Kannei despite being weaker than her.
  • Spare to the Throne: She ends up as the leader of Go following her sister's death, but she doesn't have the same charisma as her and it also caused Shuuyu to betray her in Koihime.
    • Averted in Son Go no Ketsumyaku with the help of Kazuto and Taishiji, who motivate her to pursue her sister's dream.
    • In Eiyuutan 4, she is given the throne by Sheren, who consider her to be more fit as a ruler than her.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Among the Son sisters, she's the one who resembles her mother the most down to her hat.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's usually very serious, but Kazuto is among the few who can make her smile on a regular basis, being one of the few people who treat her like a normal girl.
  • Tritagonist: She was first introduced in Son Go no Ketsumyaku as a supporting character, but following the death of her mother Yenren, she starts being more proactive as she became the direct heir behind her sister Sheren. She eventually becomes a full-fledged heroine after her unexpected death, vowing to perpetuate Go's spirit and her mother's and sister's dream before her.
  • Underboobs: The open front of her dress reveals the underside of her breasts.
  • You Are in Command Now: She succeeds the throne of Go after the death of her sister but has no interest in conquest or ruling, which is the Start of Darkness for Meirin in Koihime.

"My chest is small for now, but I'm pretty sure it will grow bigger like my sisters!"

The last and third sister of the Son family and another princess of Go, and the most spoiled of the bunch.

She's very honest about her feelings and often trades barbs with other commanders of Go, and also inherited the innocence of her mother without most of her violent tendencies. Nonetheless, she's fully aware of her status as one of the Son daughters.

In Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she takes a great interest in Kazuto and boldly declares him to be her future husband, creating a rivalry with her sisters.

  • A-Cup Angst: She knows her body still has to develop, but she's confident that her chest will grow to an impressive size seeing how racked her mother and older sisters are.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Being a Spoiled Brat, she often gets in the way of her sisters for Kazuto's affections. It becomes downplayed over the course of Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she's shown to be a responsible commander and fearless fighter in times of need.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She's the youngest of the three Go princesses and is therefore doted on by her family and subjects, something that she both likes and dislikes since it reminds her of her lack of maturity.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: She's a girlish princess wearing a crop top that exposes her belly.
  • Cute Oversized Sleeves: She's the youngest of the Son sisters, with her oversized sleeves emphasizing her cuteness.
  • Flowers of Femininity: Starting from Kakumei, she wears a pink flower hair clip at the left side of her bangs, emphasizing her status as the youngest and most innocent of the Son sisters.
  • Hime Cut: A variation; she has blunt bangs, hip-length sidelocks, and long hair worn in doughnut-like odango hair. She's the last princess of the Go Kingdom.
  • Little Miss Badass: She takes her role as a commander seriously and fights in the frontlines despite her young age.
  • Love at First Sight: Mere seconds after meeting Kazuto for the first time, she immediately confesses her love to him.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: She's the youngest princess of the Go kingdom, has light pink hair, and dresses in soft pink clothes.
  • Rings of Death: Her weapon is a pair of heart-shaped twin chakrams.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She's a cheerful and adorable pink-haired little princess.
  • Royal Brat: Unlike her two older sisters, she grew up as a normal princess and became a little bit self-centered as a result.
  • Spoiled Brat: As the youngest child, she's adored by everyone in the country and is also the only child whom Yenren dotes on a regular basis, which warped her personality as she grew up. However, the fall of the Kan Empire and the ensuing civil war would cause her to grow up as a person and one of the heirs of the Son family.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Usually appears as such in the stories set after the main series.
  • Third-Person Person: She refers to herself as "Shao" instead of using a pronoun.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Thanks to her doting mother, she knows a whole lot about romance and sex-appeal despite being the youngest of the Son sisters.

"You bastards...Do you think you could invade my garden like that and make it out alive?"

The mother of the three Son sisters, and the original founder of Go, then a small country and rival of the warlord Ryuuyou (Liu Yao) of the Youshuu (Yangzhou) Province. Absent for most of the series, she first appears in Eiyuutan, then the remakes of Shin Koihime.

Outside of the battlefield, she leads Go in Son Go no Ketsumyaku and intends to use a certain man from the future dubbed "Messenger from Heaven", in order to advance her own plans for conquest and creating a new bloodline with his help, whether he likes it or not.

More details on her past is revealed in Eiyuutan 4, featuring her as a protagonist of one of its stories set during her youth, alongside Kougai, Choushou and Teifu.

  • '90s Anti-Hero: She's the most violent and fearless character of the series, infamously known as a Blood Knight who cuts everything in her path and gained a reputation as a monster.
  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: Her overall appearance doesn't make her too old, but she's the mother of three children.
  • Action Mom: She has three grown daughters and she's a force to be reckoned with, even intimidating Kazuto on their first meeting.
  • The Alcoholic: She enjoys drinking alcohol as if it was water, even surpassing Kougai who was known as the biggest drinker of alcohol.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Her crass and masculine personality causes her daughters and Raika to look after her, as she tends to do whatever she wants and drinks a lot.
  • Anti-Nepotism: Towards Sonsaku, mostly because she wants her to be a competent ruler of her own regardless of their family connections.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: She considers men to always be interested by sex, which is why she's utterly disappointed when seeing Kazuto doing nothing to the generals of Go without their consent.
  • Ascended Extra: Even more so than Sonsaku, with a mere mention of her name in the original game to a larger influence in Shin Koihime, culminating in a cameo appearance in Souten no Haou and her formal introduction as the warlord of Go in Son Go no Ketsumyaku.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: She's quite harsh to her eldest daughter Sonsaku, since she's the direct heir to the throne. One of her earliest interactions with her in Son Go no Ketsumyaku involves hitting her on the back of her head while she was out drinking, in order to make her more aware of her surroundings. She also kidnapped her daughter on several occasions to go on improvised trips in forests and mountains, making her learn survival skills. As a result, Sonsaku greatly resents her mother for her unorthodox methods, but understand her desire to raise a competent heir in her place since she's past her prime: She often keeps an eye on her, concerned for her mother's safety and ironically acts as a mother to her.
  • Ax-Crazy: She enjoys killing enemies with no afterthoughts like it was the most natural thing in the world.
  • Big Good: Of Son Go no Ketsumyaku, being the leader of the small country of Go and the caretaker of Kazuto...Until her death, making her the Greater-Scope Paragon.
  • Blood Knight: She's a battle fanatic known for her unending bloodlust and her closeness to death, always diving in the most dangerous battles for the sheer thrill of danger, making her quite eccentric and a bit crazy even in the war-torn China compared to the rest of the warlords.
Yenren: "It's been a long time since I've fought such a worthy opponent! My blood is boiling!"
  • Boom, Headshot!: During the battle of Jouyou (Xiangyang), she ends up trapped by Kouso's army and met her demise after taking an arrow in the head.
  • Brutal Honesty: Even in her youth, Yenren has a tendency to say what she thinks without much restraint. This honesty is one of the reasons Raika took an interest in her when the two first met in Eiyuutan 4.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: At first glance, she seems to be more of a berserker type with no regards to her own life and spends her time playing around while letting her subordinates do the paperwork for her. However, she proves to be a very competent ruler who created the country of Go from scratch, and actually listens to her advisors and cares about her generals in her own extravagant way.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Being the most powerful warrior of Go, she hasn't suffered any defeat and notably defeated Gien with a single stroke.
  • Dead Star Walking: Given her historical counterpart's role in the original history of the Three Kingdoms, she's already dead in most of the series, only being mentioned as the one who laid the foundations of the Go Kingdom. She's given a proper introduction in Son Go no Ketsumyaku as one of the main heroines, shortly before her historical death in the first third of the game.
  • Death by Adaptation: While she dies in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she survives in all other continuities.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: She forcefully has sex with Kazuto after seeing his lack of aggressiveness towards girls, and intended to show him the ropes on doing so.
  • The Dreaded: Many soldiers flee upon seeing her on the battlefield, and her name is quite famous among the other warlords.
  • Facial Markings: She has a tattoo at the center of her forehead.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: She laid the foundations of the Go Kingdom, starting to build a small army ever since her early adulthood when she recruited a young Kougai and Teifu.
  • Freudian Excuse: One of the reasons she's so harsh to Sonsaku comes from her own Dark and Troubled Past, where her Abusive Parents beat her as a child to make her "stronger".
  • The Ghost: She's mentioned a few times across the series as the deceased mother of the Son sisters, but only appeared in Eiyuutan onwards.
  • Glamorous Single Mother: She managed to raise three children with little difficulty.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: She's the original founder of Go, but by the time of the games she's already dead, leaving her daughters with her ideals and legacy. In Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she starts as the Big Good until her death, but Sonsaku continues to fight in her name.
  • Hidden Depths: Behind her reckless actions and daring personality, she's shown several times to be more thoughtful than she lets on, as seen with her use of unorthodox tactics and her business acumen allowing her to earn money through trade.
  • Hot-Blooded: She tends to scream a lot during fights and other type of activities involving action, including sex.
  • I Want Grandkids: To the extreme. She not only wants her daughters to have children with Kazuto, but also the entire Go court and at one point is open to the idea of having a fourth child with him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her rough and aggressive personality, she's a well-liked leader in her small country of Go and has a loving relationship with her daughters and Kazuto.
  • The Lad-ette: She's known to be a huge drinker, has a lust for battles and is fond of rough sex while having a heavily masculine personality.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Half of her dialogue is loaded with insults towards her enemies and derisive nicknames to her generals.
  • Last Episode, New Character: She makes her first appearance in the plot-driven games in the additional scenario of Souten no Haou, watching over Kougai's corpse following the Battle of Red Cliffs.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: In her very first battle against the Yellow Turbans, she loses patience and immediately assault a castle with nothing but a ladder instead of waiting for her daughter's strategy.
  • Like a Son to Me: She eventually grows attached to Kazuto to the point she considers him to be her son, with several characters comparing their relation to that of a mother and her child.
  • Misery Builds Character: Following her creation of Go and the birth of her first daughter, she admits that her parents' abusive education did have its merits and made her the dreaded warlord she is today, and intends to do the same with Sonsaku, albeit less violently than her parents in a form of Tough Love.
  • Missing Mom: She's absent in most of the series as the Greater-Scope Paragon of Go, with her daughters trying to follow her legacy.
  • One-Woman Army: While most of the female characters are strong enough to take on dozens of soldiers, Sonken gained a reputation as a monster similar to Ryofu, infamous for cutting countless enemies by herself.
  • Parental Favoritism: She's a Doting Parent only towards her youngest daughter Sonshoukou, while she treats Sonsaku harshly.
  • Parental Substitute: Kazuto eventually considers her to be his surrogate mother, given the rough education she gave him during his time in Go.
  • Parents as People: Besides her role as the mother of the Son family, she's more known as the founder of Go and its most dangerous warrior.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Eiyuutan 4 reveals that she was already known in her youth as a quick-thinker who didn't hesitate to use brutal tactics, such as putting fire to several buildings of her own city to chase out all of the bandits in town or destroying water banks of the local river to flood their stronghold. On the other hand, she also uses public funds to repair the collateral damage of her actions.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: She turns out to be still alive in Souten no Haou and kept hiding to see how her daughters would fight against Sousou by themselves.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Subverted. It turns out she intended to kill her own Abusive Parents to stop their everyday abuse, only for them to die of natural causes before she could do so.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Unsurprisingly, she's an amalgamation of the physical traits and personalities of her three daughters, making her a violent, alcoholic, fun-loving, childish and passionate individual.
  • Shipper on Deck: While she doesn't care much about how many women Kazuto can sleep with, she's more enthusiastic about him getting a relationship with her eldest daughter Sheren.
Yenren: "So, how many times did you do it with Sheren?"
Kazuto: "I didn't do anything yet..."
Yenren: "...Say what. I even gave you the permission to fuck her, remember? I'm sure you can't resist these nice curves, that I offered for you to take!"
Kazuto: "What the hell are you saying about your own daughter!?"
  • Shipper with an Agenda: After confirming Kazuto's status as the "Messenger from Heaven", she quickly asks him to be the breeder of the entire Go court, in order to spread his "heavenly blood" and increase the influence of the Go Kingdom.
  • Sideboob: Like Sonsaku, her dress is sideless and exposes the outer sides of her breasts.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Being the mother of Sonsaku, she's taller than her.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Downplayed. Her physical traits were passed down to Sonsaku and Sonken and divided among the two.
  • Take Over the World: Subverted in Eiyuutan 4, when she reveals to her aide that she intends to conquer all of China by force...Because the Kan Empire is on the verge of collapsing, and needs a strong leader to put it back together. Despite the idea being absurd during her time, she correctly guesses that other warlords in the country have the same goal in mind.
  • Taking the Bullet: She ultimately dies at the hands of Kouso during the battle of Jouyou (Xiangyang), taking an arrow to protect Teifu.
  • Tough Love: She gave Sheren a very rough upbringing because she's preparing her for the heavy responsibilities she will have to carry when she succeeds her as queen.
  • Vapor Wear: Her dress reveals enough skin for us to know she isn't wearing any underwear.

"If you dare to defy Son Go, the sound of this bell will send you to Hell."

The head of a large group of pirates on the lower banks of the Choukou (Yangtze) River, who plundered on government officials for a living. Once a former friend of Sonken Chuubou, she decided to fight the decadent Kan Empire her own way, and collaborated with the warrior Kouso for a time.

She meets with Sonken again in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, who attempted to make her join forces with Go again. Albeit refusing at first, she's convinced by Kazuto to make her fight Sonken in order to prove her goodwill and show her talent as a commander. She's ultimately defeated in a naval battle, outwitted by her friend's tactics despite having no experience with ships, and eventually pledges her loyalty to her and Go.

A stoic and very quiet warrior who doesn't let her emotions be in the way of her duties, she's nonetheless known in the rest of the series as a loyal bodyguard of Sonken, devoted to her and seeing her as her future queen.

  • Almighty Janitor: Despite being technically the personal servant of Sonken, she's one of Go's strongest generals.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: An unusual example. She's actually stronger than Sonken, but works as her bodyguard and personal mentor ever since she was defeated thanks to her wits rather than her raw strength.
  • Childhood Friends: She was the best friend of Sonken when she was a citizen of Go.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Invoked by Kazuto, who tried to find a middle ground to prevent all-out war between Go's and Kannei's armies, by betting Sonken's honor on a single and decisive battle. Thanks to his initiative, Kannei accepts her defeat following a fierce battle and joins Go.
  • Fundoshi: She wears a Japanese loincloth as her underwear.
  • Gratuitous Ninja: Her design is similar to a ninja, and her fighting style is fast-paced with her weapon being a one-handed broadsword similar to a shamshir. She's also the fastest character in Enbu and the trickiest to use.
  • Hell Is That Noise: She uses bells to make her enemies aware of her presence, moments before their demise. As such, it gave birth to the rumor that if someone hears bells on the Choukou (Yangtze) River, death is coming for them.
  • Hot-Blooded: The most outwardly passionate and aggressive member of the Go faction, even though she doesn't show it a lot.
  • It's Personal: She takes it upon herself to kill Kouso, being her former companion and having failed to kill her once.
  • I "Uh" You, Too: Develops feelings for Kazuto over the course of several months, because of his honesty and kindness to her despite her status as a former bandit and her cold demeanor, but she cannot bring herself to admit her love for him.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: She's an amalgamation of a ninja (her design), pirate (her former occupation), and samurai (code of honor and devotion to her lord), but it doesn't make her less impressive.
  • Not So Above It All: She's known to be the most serious of Go's generals, but she becomes weirdly concerned when Renfa starts dating Kazuto, prompting Kougai to accuse her of being jealous, which she strongly refutes despite being the most eager to see their relationship.
  • Outgrowing the Childish Name: She used to call her childhood friend Sonken as "Renren", but she prefers not to mention it anymore.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Smiling really isn't her forte and her scarf also hides her face when's she embarrassed.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: She wears her hair up in a covered hair bun.
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: As the Childhood Friend of Renfa, she's her closest female confident and has expressed several times her dedication to her, with lots of Homoerotic Subtext, to the point she becomes very concerned when Renfa has her first date with Kazuto.
  • Reverse Grip: She holds her shamshir in this fashion, allowing her to strike fast.
  • Samurai: Kazuto likens her to one, due to her devoted attitude towards Sonken and her sense of honor.
  • Satellite Character: Before the remakes, her role was mostly limited to being the bodyguard of Sonken with most of her screentime alongside her.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: She wears a long and dark scarf which goes down to her legs.
  • The Stoic: She rarely shows her emotions, but she becomes more emotive if Sonken is involved.
  • That Woman Is Dead: In the epilogue of Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she and Kouchuu visit the place where Kouso died, and explains to her how Kouso, the warlord, and Kannei, the bandit, both died that day, and how she became a true general of Go.
  • Tsundere: While initially acting cold towards Kazuto due to his close ties with Renfa, she eventually softens to him and appreciates his personality, honest to a fault, but doesn't quite admit it.
  • Vigilante Man: She chose a life of banditry to fight against the corruption of the Kan Empire, mostly by attacking and stealing ships from government officials.
  • Why Can't I Hate You?: Moments before the final battle against Kouso, the latter visits her in her house for one last talk, but she cannot bring herself to kill her despite having a perfect opportunity to do so.

"Tsundere seems like the perfect word for cats! You are incredible, Mister Kazuto!"

An officer of Go Kingdom and a longtime friend of Renfa.

She is very innocent, pure-hearted and cheerful person, with a cat-like personality and a fondness for cats bordering on obsession. In the battlefield, this is reflected by her honesty and tendency to be reckless, but the other generals appreciate her devotion for her friends.

Because they are close in age, Renfa trusts Shuutai more than anyone else besides Kannei.

  • A-Cup Angst: One of her character events implies she has a deep hatred for big-breasted women such as Kougai and Rikuson.
  • BFS: She wields a sword that's as long as she is tall.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Upon seeing a cat, she becomes utterly defenseless to its cuteness and hug it immediately.
  • Gratuitous Ninja: She dresses like a kunoichi even though she's supposed to be Chinese instead of Japanese.
  • Hime Cut: She has parted blunt bangs, cheek-length sidelocks, and ankle-length straight hair.
  • The Ingenue: Among the generals of Go, she's the most innocent and naive of the bunch, blushing at the thought of holding hands with Kazuto once she develops feelings for him.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: She loves cats.
  • Trap Master: As part of her Ninja schtick, she's very good with traps and in one of her events, defeat an entire squad of Go and taking down Kougai effortlessly.

"The best way to enjoy life is drinking and fighting."

A veteran general of the Go Kingdom alongside Teifu, with both known together as the Two Wings of Go. She is well versed in all aspects of martial arts thanks to her large build, and is especially skilled with the bow.

She drinks heavily in the daytime and can be seen skipping work without a care in the world, but she can also cook surprisingly well, to the point others are amazed at her cooking skills.

However, her weakness lies with people using reason to deal with her; She's helpless against Go's best strategists Shuuyu and Choushou who often admonish her for slacking off.

  • The Alcoholic: She's known as the heaviest drinker of the series, to the point of drinking alcohol during breakfast...Behind Sonken Bundai, who beats her to it in Son Go no Ketsumyaku.
  • Always Someone Better: In the original series, she was known as the heaviest drinker of Go before the introduction of Sonken Bundai in the remakes, when she's seen losing in a drinking contest against her.
  • The Big Girl: She's the tallest warrior of Go and despite being an archer, she's perfectly able to fight off enemies at close range as Soujin learned the hard way.
  • Burning the Ships: She sets on fire many of Gi's ships in Red Cliffs using fire arrows, taking advantage of the confusion and the connected ships of Houtou to spread it more quickly. However, as Kazuto thought of a failsafe to easily separate the ships, it doesn't last long.
  • Cleavage Window: Her dress has a small opening in the chest area.
  • Cool Big Sis: Being one of the oldest soldiers of Go, she's quite protective with the younger generation, especially Sonken and Kazuto.
  • Defector from Decadence: Invoked by Kougai herself along with her Zero-Approval Gambit as part of the plan to infiltrate Gi and deserting Go.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: She dies at the Battle of Red Cliffs following a fierce duel with Kakouen.
  • Fake Defector: A la her historical counterpart, Kougai feigns defection to Sousou and later sets the latter's ships on fire at the Battle of Red Cliffs.
  • Friend to All Children: Perhaps as a consequence of being a Womanchild herself, many kids of Go look up to her.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She dies smiling after her duel with Kakouen, satisfied with offering her life to help Go survive another day.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: She's shown to be quite the drinker during her short time in Gi, and it turns out in Son Go no Ketsumyaku than she drinks at least once per day.
  • Irrational Hatred: She becomes strangely concerned with Shoku's people following their formal alliance with Go, and it eventually escalates into a full-blown hatred. Granted, the circumstances behind the alliance caused many of Go's soldiers to die, but all of the other generals think she's gone too far when she begins insulting Ryuubi. Subverted once it's revealed she was acting in order to fool her allies into thinking she lost it, and she perfectly knows her hatred towards Shoku is unjustified, as it was caused by Go's invasion of Keishuu (Jingzhou).
  • Master Actress: As part of her mole plan in Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she begins insulting Shoku and the cowardice of Go to ally with them, acting as a bitter commander regretting the time when Yenren was alive. It works a little too well, to the point Kazuto doubts her true intentions despite knowing it's an act. Only Koumei, The Strategist of Shoku, and Teifu, her Best Friend, are able to see through her acting.
  • The Mole: Similar to her character in the original epic, she defects to Sousou in order to destroy Gi's fleet by surprise.
  • Old Maid: She considers herself to be unfitting in a relationship, because of her tendency to drink a lot, her large build and thinks she's too "old" to have a husband. Kazuto's kindness and accepting of all of her bad traits causes her to develop feelings for him.
  • Only Mostly Dead: In the additional story of Souten no Haou which happens after the Battle of Red Cliffs, she turns out to be still alive albeit in a coma, until Kada revives her with his powers.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Invoked by Kougai herself. By faking a defection to Gi, she created a situation in which she would die at the hands of its generals, wanting to die as she sees fit after sacrificing her life for Go. She ultimately asks Kakouen to kill her.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Because Kazuto already knows about her historical role as The Mole in Souten no Haou, her gambit to destroy Gi's fleet fails and she dies without being able to do much damage.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: She sports a qipao to reveal her long legs.
  • Shipper on Deck: She witnesses one of Sonken's conversations with Kazuto in Souten no Haou, and is quick to tease her about a possible relationship with him. She also does the same with Kazuto in her short interaction with him, thinking he would be the best partner for her (which foreshadows the events of the second remake, Son Go no Ketsumyaku).
  • Sideboob: Her dress lets us see the sides of her breasts.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's the tallest general of Go, right behind Sonken Bundai.
  • Stocking Filler: She wears garters to hold up her stockings.
  • Strike Me Down: Following her defeat at the Battle of Red Cliffs, she asks Kakouen to finish her off to die a Honorable Warrior's Death, despite the pleas of Kazuto and the rest of the Go army.
  • Womanchild: Despite being a grown adult, she has a childish personality and is not above doing pranks to her colleagues and mocking them behind their back. At times, she can be seen as an adult Rinrin.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: In order to infiltrate Sousou's army, she takes upon herself to sabotage her reputation to the point almost everyone in Go believe she's gone desperate to the point of allying with Gi, out of hatred for Shoku.

"Hoho...You're still young. As your big sis, I don't mind if you're rough and have your way with me, I like it."

One of the very first generals of Go and an old friend of Kougai, with both of them known as the Two Wings of Go.

She likes to act as her big sister for Kazuto and the younger generals of Go.

  • Cool Big Sis: Shares this role with Kougai, often referring to herself as the supportive big sister of the younger generals and Kazuto.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Most of her "dates" with Kazuto are actually pretexts to go drinking with him all night and playing at the casino.
  • The Hedonist: Preferring to enjoy life to the fullest, she spends her time drinking and gambling, using Kazuto as her safeguard whenever things go south.
  • Lascivious Beauty Mark: She has a beauty mark under her right eye and among the generals of Go, she's the most open to sleep with Kazuto.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: The front of her dress has an opening that extends from her cleavage to her belly button.
  • Older Than They Look: She has almost the same age as Yenren, but she still looks like a young woman.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: She wears a dress with a leg slit on both sides.
  • Sideboob: Her dress exposes the outer sides of her boobs.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Normally a very serious and dedicated general to Yenren who harbors a strong loyalty to Go, she's known in private as an easy-going and careless person among her friends.
  • Sultry Bangs: Her bangs partially cover her right eye, as appropriate for her sexy appearance.
  • The Tease: She spends her time teasing Kazuto.
  • Trash of the Titans: Her room is filled with utter garbage and scattered papers everywhere, leaving little to walk.
  • Underboobs: The open front of her dress reveals the underside of her breasts.
  • Vapor Wear: Her dress leaves enough uncovered to make clear she isn't wearing a bra.

"Are you sure you want to fight me? I'm plenty strong, you know..."

Originally a subordinate of Ryuuyou (Liu Yao) an old rival of Yenren and Go, she first met Sonsaku in a battle at the beginning of Son Go no Ketsumyaku in a duel deciding which one of them would take the Messenger from Heaven in which she lost.

After declaring Sonsaku her rival, she meets her again during Go's war of conquest towards her lord Ryuuyou (Liu Yao), defending the last castle left. Eventually, she joins Go after Ryuuyou's surrender and quickly befriends Sonsaku.

She known among both her friends and soldiers as a cheerful mood-maker, and an innocent yet strong-willed warrior, able to rival Sonsaku in raw power.

  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Afraid of what would happen with Kazuto on their first time, she drank a lot of alcohol, only to become unable to think clearly, with Kazuto putting her in bed since she cannot express her consent while drunk. The day after, she's actually mad that he didn't try to make a move on her, despite the rumors of him being a pervert.
  • Bear Hug: On her last character event, she becomes fond of these with Kazuto, concerned about his fate after the war against Sousou.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Her left leg is covered by a detached pant leg and right leg is bare.
  • Flower Motifs: She wears a pink flower in her hair and her outfit has a floral design all over.
  • Friendly Enemy: Her first meeting with Sonsaku at the very beginning of the game starts with them clashing swords over the Messenger from Heaven, and ends on cordial terms after Taishiji is forced to retreat, but not before declaring Sonsaku her rival.
  • Friendly Rivalry: After the defeat of her lord Ryuuyou to Go's army, she joins Sonsaku as one of her friends and general with the objective of surpassing her one day.
  • Honor Before Reason: After losing to Sonsaku during the conflict between her and Ryuuyou, she promises her to be her ally, invoking Defeat Means Friendship and after seeing Sonsaku's strange interest for her. Despite having the possibility to betray her and join her liege to fight back with Kouso, she ultimately stays true to her promise and joins Sonsaku at the end of the day.
  • The Ingenue: Outside of battle, she turns out to be a surprisingly innocent and cheerful woman, who doesn't know much about romance and the more "adult" side of things.
  • The Lancer: She's acting as the Foil to Sonsaku, being her rival turned friend, with bonus points for fighting with a spear.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Taken to the extreme. Her bodice is backless, with two narrow straps of fabric rising from the waistline to cover her boobs, leaving her cleavage and midriff exposed.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: She becomes more aggressive towards Kazuto to cope with Sonsaku's death and pampers him a lot, afraid he would go back to his world after the war against Gi, but she backs down after he comforts her and tells her he will stay with her no matter what.
  • Secret-Keeper: She witnessed multiple times Shuuyu coughing blood after Sonsaku's death, but chooses not to reveal it to anyone, thinking she's intent on dying to join her lover. She reveals it to Kazuto after the latter also learned from Shuuyu herself of her condition.
Kazuto: Please don't talk about it to anyone else, ok?
Rian: Hey, that's mean. Do you think I'm an idiot or something?
    Kazuto: Uh...
Rian: Huhu, I'm a wonderful idiot, of course.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Her outfit leaves her back bare.
  • Virgin-Shaming: She's afraid of revealing her virginity to other people, so she pretends to have plenty of experience despite evidence of the contrary and virginity doesn't seem to be an issue in the setting.
  • Worthy Opponent: Sonsaku considers one immediately after their first duel, to the point of attempting to recruit her on the spot.

"Son Go is always short of people. You can't just play around and eating food for free like that!"

One of the oldest generals of Go alongside Kougai and Teifu, and a longtime friend of Yenren. She's in charge of Go's internal affairs and manages everything related to paperwork and administration.

She is an earnest and stubborn woman who is always shouting, sometimes alienating her students with her harsh words and numerous lectures. However, all understand that her personality shows a sincere desire to protect Go's future and don't criticize her.

She's often ridiculed by Yenren for her small build and youthful appearance, saying that it does not match her actual age, something that causes her a bit of a complex but otherwise doesn't bother her much.

  • A-Cup Angst: Yenren usually comments on her small chest, much to her dismay.
  • Coat Cape: She wears her haori over her shoulders like a cape.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: She wears a red ribbon wrapped around her left leg.
  • Honest Advisor: She's known as a harsh but competent teacher and advisor to the generals of Go, with Kazuto considering her a very good mentor.
  • The Illegible: Her writing is stated to be quite beautiful, so much that her Chinese characters end up very hard to read due to her extensive use of cursive writing and flowery language.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: She argues a lot with Yenren, but she's nonetheless her longtime friend, who always keeps an eye on her and give her life advice.
  • Old Maid: Being the longtime friend of Yenren, she's one of the oldest generals of Go and secretly worries about not getting married for being too "old".
  • Older Than She Looks: Despite her small body, she is about the same age as Kougai.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She rarely smiles except when mocking people.
  • The Philosopher: Being a huge fan of history, her lectures involve ancient Chinese philosophers and thinkers such as Sun Tzu and Confucius.
  • Stern Teacher: She's strict with Kazuto, especially because of his status as the Messenger from Heaven. She does allow him to take breaks from time to time when he ends up sleeping during her lectures.

"Every person in this country has a duty to live. We can't let emotions get in the way of our decisions and throw our lives away."

Go Kingdom's master strategist. In Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she was given the task to train Kazuto in military tactics while teaching him how to read old Chinese texts.

  • Back from the Dead: She gets resurrected in the harem ending of the first visual novel and is finally free from the legacy that chained her down throughout the entire plot.
  • Characterization Marches On: In the first game, she was mostly driven by her desire to uphold Sonsaku's legacy to the point of betraying her sisters and taking over Go, on top of owning a pair of "personal pets". From Shin onwards, she's more collected and acts as the voice of reason for both Sonsaku and Sonken, while lacking her most dubious traits and "pets" (who also didn't make any appearance in the series ever since).
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Sonsaku is her childhood friend and lover.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed. She doesn't mind Sheren being with Kazuto knowing he's a very important person for her, but she's sometimes jealous to see the two of them together on private, and she's a little concerned when Sousou starts hitting on her during their time in the Anti-Toutaku Alliance.
  • Dead Person Conversation: Moments before her death in Koihime, she has one last conversation with Sonsaku, questioning if her choices were the right thing to do for Go.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: Although nominally Sonsaku's vassal, the fact that Sonken abdicates so much responsibility means that Shuuyu basically runs the army and resents her new queen for not doing more conquering. This later leads to Shuuyu's betrayal in Koihime.
  • Driven to Suicide: After her short takeover of Go and subsequent defeat against Shoku, she chooses to die in the royal palace.
  • Go Out with a Smile: At the end of the Go route in Shin Koihime and Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she finally dies after the final battle against Sousou, having exhausted all of her remaining strength to defeat Gi, ultimately fulfilling her promise to Sonsaku.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Following Sonsaku's death in Souten no Haou, she began showing visible exhaustion and started to have huge headaches, culminating in coughing blood right before the Battle of Red Cliffs. She eventually reveals to Kazuto one possible reason behind her condition, saying that the death of her lover affected her far more than expected.
Meirin: When Sheren died, half of myself died as well. And whatever life I have left will be burned up in this final battle.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her dress has an opening in the front that exposes her cleavage and belly.
  • Not So Above It All: She's usually the Straight Man to pretty much everyone else in Go, but she isn't above enjoying her own things in private, notably an event where she borrowed an erotic book from Rikuson about the Spring and Autumn period.
  • Number Two: As the main strategist of Go, it is up to her to guide Sonsaku and Renfa through both of their reigns as the Queen of Go.
  • Only Sane Woman: Unlike the majority of Go's generals, she's surprisingly calm and more often than not acts as the voice of reason within the army due to half of them spending their time drinking and partying, but she's nonetheless as passionate as them but she doesn't show it upfront.
  • Opposites Attract: She has a special relationship with Hard-Drinking Party Girl Sonsaku, despite having polar opposite personalities and interests.
  • Secretly Dying: In Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she suffers from a uncurable disease ever since Sonsaku died, but doesn't reveal it to anyone but Kazuto.
  • Sexy Mentor: She trains Kazuto in military tactics and reading, and is a potential love interest to him in Son Go no Ketsumyaku.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: She wears a dress with long slits at sides, showing her legs.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: She's the main strategist of her faction and fittingly, she wears glasses.
  • So Proud of You: Moments before her death at the end of Son Go no Ketsumyaku, she congratulates her two protégés Renfa and Kazuto, who were able to lead Go to victory and accomplish Yenren's and Sheren's impossible dream.
  • The Spock: She always keeps her cool and makes rational judgements, seeing things from the big picture.
  • The Starscream: Completely driven by Sonsaku's death to carry out her legacy, she rebels against Sonken and takes control of Go's armies for herself, urged on by Ukitsu. Averted in the the rest of the series.
  • The Strategist: The very best of Go.
  • Undying Loyalty: She has sworn loyalty to Queen Sonsaku until their task is done, becoming a minor antagonist in the first game.

"Oh my...This writing is wonderful..."

The second in command of the army of Go, assisting Shuuyu as her disciple and co-strategist.

Despite her status, she appears as a laid-back and very relaxed person, who makes clumsy mistakes when interacting with her friends in Go, and is strangely fond of Kazuto when making lectures with him. However, when it comes to battle, she becomes quick-witted and able to make swift decisions.

Although she doesn't like to fight, she takes her duty as a commander very seriously, for the sake of everyone else in Go.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: She talks slowly and always gives the impression of being in her own world, talking about her latest books.
  • Cute Bookworm: She loves to read books.
  • Ditzy Genius: A smart yet air-headed strategist.
  • Hot Librarian: She's usually seen near books, and she's certainly good looking.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: The front of her dress has an opening that extends from her cleavage to her belly button.
  • Nerdgasm: Rikuson has a... special relationship with books as gaining knowledge gives her sexual pleasure.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Her seemingly airhead attitude allows her to fool her enemies more easily, as seen during her negociations with Kouso during the Battle of Jouyou (Xiangyang).
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: It is appropriate for a strategist with great love for gaining knowledge to wear minuscule pince-nez glasses.

"Master Kazuto, your face is so radiant!"

A bespectacled officer of Go Kingdom and friend of Renfa, who joined Go after its vassalization by Enjutsu. She used to be an unnamed soldier before her talent was discovered by Shuuyu.

She isn't very comfortable with the fact that she was selected as a strategist for the kingdom of Go despite her poor eyesight, and her timid personality causes her to have a low self-esteem despite her talent.

  • Blind Without 'Em: She suffers from myopia and astigmatism.
  • Cleavage Window: She wears a dress with a large cleavage cutout.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Her very timid and awkward personality makes her quite adorable.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite her talent, she doesn't like being praised and presents herself as an above-average tactician.
  • High-Class Glass: She wears a monocle.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Pao's Red. She's very timid while Pao is very confident.
  • Shrinking Violet: Most of her scenes have her hiding behind her large sleeves, being easily flustered by everyone around her.
  • Technician Versus Performer: In one of her events, she reveals to Kazuto that her talent in tactics actually comes from hard work and training unlike Roshuku's natural talent, and her desire to follow Shuuyu's footsteps to become one of Go's finest strategists.
  • Tsurime Eyes: She has notably sharp eyes to go with her serious character.

"Nice to meet you! I am the very best of geniuses, trained by the likes of the legendary Duke Shuukou! Please call me...The Great Roshuku!"

A newbie military and self-proclaim "genius" strategist who wanted to work for Enjutsu's army, but mistakenly ended up in Go instead, recruited as the same time as Ryomou. Her greatest dream is to conquer China, by personally leading Go to victory over the continent.

She has an unbelievably thick personality, causing her to unnerve other generals without actually trying. On top of that, she has also a strong ambition and desire to climb through the ranks, and attempts to promote herself at every opportunity. Despite this, she was eventually accepted in Go's army albeit as a disciple and assistant to Choushou, to her great dismay.

She often uses harsh words and can come out as insensitive, but even though she was reprimanded every time, she never improved, almost as if she was doing it on purpose.

  • Brutal Honesty: She has a tendency to speak her mind and not read the room, which usually cause the other generals of Go to be angry at her, but some acknowledge she can easily pinpoint people's flaws to help them.
  • Butt-Monkey: She's often the target of physical and verbal abuse from the rest of the generals (particularly her teacher Choushou), mostly because of her lack of tact.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Downplayed. Her personality and Small Name, Big Ego are met with weird looks by the other generals of Go, with only a few of them expressing their dislike towards her.
  • Insufferable Genius: She claims to be the best strategist of the world, and declares her intention of helping conquering China by using Go as her stepping stone to this end. While she tends to say outrageous things and doesn't know modesty, she does have genuine knowledge of war tactics to back her claims.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Ashe's Blue. She's very confident while Ashe is very timid.
  • Shameless Self-Promoter: She doesn't miss an occasion to promote herself when talking with the higher-ups of Go, only to get a lecture from Raika.
  • Showgirl Skirt: Most of her skirt is knee-length, except at the front where it splits to expose her thighs.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: A self-proclaimed genius strategist, when she really has above-average skills and a very good memory and but a lack of experience.
  • Technician vs. Performer: She's the Performer to Ryomou's Technician, as she doesn't have any formal training for military tactics but has natural talent for making up strategies on the fly.
  • Verbal Tic: Hyawawa!, when she's flustered or suffers abuse.

Daikyou at left, Shoukyou at right

Twin sisters named Daikyou and Shoukyou. Shuuyu keeps them as her pets.

  • Adapted Out: They only ever appeared in the first Koihime and its anime adaptation, being excluded from all the game's remakes.
  • Giant Poofy Sleeves: Their dresses include a pair of poofy sleeves.
  • Hair Intakes: Their hairdo have two of what look like cat ears.
  • Human Pet: They act as Shuuyu's personal "pets" for the sole purpose of entertaining her.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Their eye shapes are the only way to tell them apart; Daikyou has Tareme Eyes and Shoukyou has Tsurime Eyes.
  • Idiot Hair: Both of them sports one and don't shine by their intelligence.
  • No Name Given: Neither twin have proper given names; Daikyou simply means "Big Kyou" and Shoukyou simply means "Small Kyou".
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Among the two, Daikyou is the nicer twin.
  • Satellite Character: They don't have much character on their own, outside of being the personal servants of Shuuyu and having no relevance in the plot of Koihime.
  • Slave Collar: Both of them have one, as a reminder of their status as Human Pets.
  • Tareme Eyes: Daikyou has rounder eyes, making her more docile than her sister.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Shoukyou has sharper eyes, which gives her a more aggressive look and the only distinctive trait from her sister.
