The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

[up]Hilarious one isn't an example. The Harsher i could see as an example considering how similar they are. Though, Rock riots aren't a rare thing.

A "Funny Aneurysm" Moment came up in Ask The Tropers today, while the central issue is edit warring over the context of the entry, I wanted to double check (a) if it was even a valid example, and (b) if it's even on the right page.

The most contextual version of the entry from YMMV.Buffy The Vampire Slayer S 3 E 2 Dead Mans Party

  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment: Buffy says to Xander, "Didn't anyone ever warn you about playing with pointy sticks? It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye." This becomes this trope when in season seven, Caleb destroys Xander's left eye.

The entry seems valid enough but since it's in dispute and given the mass misuse of these tropes, thought it better to bring it up.

My other question is whether or not the entry should be on YMMV.Buffy The Vampire Slayer S 7 E 18 Dirty Girls, since that's the episode where the spoilered event actually happens.

Amusingly, there seems to be a Hilarious in Hindsight moment on that page with the same issue in that it should probably be on YMMV.Buffy The Vampire Slayer (the comics don't have their own YMMV page that I can tell).

Reposting these Star Wars: The Clone Wars examples:

  • Ahsoka's line in the pilot movie, "I'm a Jedi Knight! Or soon will be." In "The Wrong Jedi", she rejects the possibility of knighthood and leaves the Jedi Order.
  • At the end of "Ambush", Yoda promises King Katuunko "Fail you we will not." Unfortunately, they ultimately did fail Katuunko in "Witches of the Mist" when Savage kills him. What's worse is that while Yoda stopped Ventress from killing him, he ends up being killed by the apprentice that replaced her and neither Jedi could stop him that time.
  • The Holocron arc becomes much, much harsher in hindsight after Rebels. Here, we see that the Inquisitors kidnap helpless babies with the intent of raising them in the ways of the Dark Side. And this time, the Jedi Order and the Republic aren't around to stop Palpatine's plans.
  • In "Weapons Factory", Luminara tells Anakin that she is prepared to let her go of her apprentice Barriss in the event of her death, and asks if Anakin is willing to do the same with Ahsoka. Come "The Wrong Jedi", both of them are forced to let go of their apprentices for reasons that neither of them expected.
    • Also, the opening quote of the episode is "No gift is more precious than trust." That becomes pretty sad in light of the Fugitive arc.
  • Luminara Unduli being held prisoner by reanimated Geonosian warriors in "Legacy of Terror" becomes a lot more disturbing when you consider her fate in Star Wars Rebels.
  • Ahsoka fighting a brainwashed Barriss in "Brain Invaders" becomes this after "The Wrong Jedi", where Barriss is attacking Ahsoka of her own free will.
    • On a similar note, Ahsoka mentioning Clone Sergeant Slick's betrayal to Barriss in the same episode also becomes this when Barriss betrays the Republic and Jedi Order for similar reasons to Slick.
    • Also at the end of the episode, Ahsoka wonders whether she should've killed Barriss (who in a moment of clarity, even asked her to do it) because her mercy could've potentially jeopardised the lives of many others. Barriss ends up killing at least seven Jedi, at least two civilians, and injuring many others with bombing the Jedi Temple.
  • "Grievous Intrigue" is centered around Anakin rescuing Jedi Master Eeth Koth, who is being held captive by General Grievous. The sentiment of the rescue is soured since, ultimately, Koth will die at the hands of Darth Vader.
  • In "Clone Cadets", Bravo Squad's line "Time to watch the Dominoes fall" becomes this when you consider the ultimate fate of Domino Squad. Also in the same episode and deliberately invoked at the time of its airing, Hevy's promise to come back to 99 for his medal. Considering that the episode takes place before "Rookies", fans who have watched the episode beforehand know that's not going to happen.
  • A mind controlled Ahsoka fighting Anakin in "Altar of Mortis" becomes harsher after Rebels when she confronts Darth Vader.
  • Ahsoka saves Tarkin in "Citadel Rescue" from being killed at the hands of a Osi Sobek. In "The Wrong Jedi", he tries to have her executed for treason.
  • The Umbara arc puts a lot of emphasis on the clones learning the need to question orders and make their own decisions, which becomes a lot more tragic after the reveal about the inhibitor chips. Also, Fives nearly being executed by his fellow clones horribly foreshadows him meeting that exact fate in the Order 66 arc.
    • One of the worst incidents that Rex had ever experienced in Umbara was discovering that Krell had tricked him and his unit into firing upon their own brothers. In "Shattered", Rex finds himself forced to do the same thing all over again, this time protecting Ahsoka from his own men who have been brainwashed by Order 66.
    • Alongside Fives, Jesse was also almost executed by his fellow clones. This becomes cruelly ironic when Order 66 gets activated, with Jesse getting turned into an executioner himself.
  • The Onderon arc features a group of Rebels fighting against the Separatists that Obi-Wan has minor doubts over whether or not their actions may degenerate into terrorism. The capital of this group's home world Onderon is named "Iziz", which is pronounced and spelled similarly to the real-world terrorist organization ISIS that emerged in 2014 (two years after the Onderon arc first aired). It gets worse when later works reveal that this group, under Saw Gerrera's leadership, became one of the more brutal rebel cells fighting against the Empire.
  • According to behind the scenes material, the tally marks on Gregor's clone commando armor are a reference to the tally marks the Boston Bruins goaltender Gary Cheevers stenciled on his hockey mask, used to count the number of stitches he would have gotten had it not been for his protective equipment. In Rebels, Gregor does not wear any armor at all, and he gets killed from a single blaster shot to the chest in the final episode of the series.
  • Maul's final fate in Rebels makes his return in The Clone Wars all the worse. He eventually (and permanently) dies at the hands of Obi-Wan, having lost everything; the Nightsister coven, his Shadow Collective, the Darksaber, and even his "apprentice". For all the misery and terror he caused he ultimately ended up accomplishing nothing and dying in despair, with the only faint hope that Luke will "avenge them all".
    • This is doubly sad when one considers that, for all his evil, this is a man who is just as much a victim of Sidious as the clones or the Jedi, having been kidnapped from his mother and "raised" (read: abused and tortured) by the Sith from infancy. It's just heartbreaking that he never gets to see a galaxy rid of his former master, or break free from the conditioning engrained in him.
  • In "The Jedi Who Knew Too Much", Anakin promises Ahsoka "I'd never let anyone hurt you." The last time the two see each other alive, Anakin, as Vader, rejects Ahsoka's attempts to reach him and decides to kill her.
  • In "Unfinished Business" (which was written in 2012, released as an animatic in 2015, and officially completed in 2020), Admiral Trench has a Plan B that involves blowing up Anaxes with a bomb. While the Jedi succeed in disarming the bomb in that episode, Rebels would show that the planet somehow got blown up after the war anyway, leaving behind an asteroid belt with only the Fort Anaxes military base and a nest of fyrnocks inhabiting it. The databank says it was destroyed in a cataclysm, but given everything else involving the bomb, it leaves one to wonder.

[up][up] Hindsight gets posted on the work that is affected by the event, not the work of the event. So it belongs on the earlier episode page. Maybe change it to "Caleb destroys Xander's left eye" so the context isn't entirely spoilered.

[down] The vagueness just makes it more clunky. Just use spoiler tags. If they choose to turn spoilers on and get spoilered, that's on them. I don't think spoilers are blanket-banned from YMMV like they are on Moments.

Or even just make it vague with "a character's eye gets destroyed by the episode's villain".

Bringing up the following examples from HilariousInHindsight.Doctor Who:

  • "The Tenth Planet":
    • The newscaster who gives a "Don't panic!" broadcast is played by an actor named Glenn Beck. Really.
    • The following from Ben, while preparing for a "Die Hard" on an X situation, several years before the introduction of the Sonic Screwdriver:
Ben: Aww, just imagine trying to tackle one of them geezers [the Cybermen] with a screwdriver!
  • In "Spearhead from Space", the ringing sound emitted by the meteorite which the poacher digs up sounds exactly like somebody's cell phone.
  • In "The Time Monster", the Brigadier berates the Doctor: "One moment you're talking about the whole universe blowing up, and the next you're going on about tea!" This sums up one of the Doctor's most famous monologues at the end of the last story of the classic era, "Survival": "Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, somewhere else the tea is getting cold."
  • With the rise of certain internet acronyms bandied about as insults, it's quite funny that the Third and Fourth Doctor companion whose gimmick was that she was an outspoken feminist has the initials "SJ".
  • Sarah yelling, "Look at that great spider!" in "The Time Warrior". Guess what showed up four stories later?
  • In "Robot", one of the Fourth Doctor's proposed outfits is a pierrot costume. It so resembles the costume worn in David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" video that you'd almost think it was a Whole Costume Reference if it didn't predate the video by six years. Much later, in "The Leisure Hive" (which was contemporaneous with "Ashes to Ashes"), we get long shots of the characters walking across a British beach in winter.
  • Guy Siner played a Kaled (a space Nazi) in "Genesis of the Daleks". One decade later he would play an adorable Camp Gay Wehrmacht in 'Allo 'Allo!
  • "The Talons of Weng-Chiang"
  • In "The Ribos Operation", both the Doctor and Romana (as well as others) claim to be from the North.
  • "City of Death":

I think I might have an example for Helluva Boss, I just want to run this by you to make sure it's valid:

  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment: Stolas' appearance in the pilot episode ends with him very aggressively trying to get an obviously disturbed and uncomfortable Blitzo to have sex with him again, which is played for Black Comedy. Stolas' original voice actor, Brock Baker, would later be accused of sexual misconduct, causing him to be recast for the show proper.

Some people may not be big on "character acts sexually creepy then their VA is accused of sexual harassment" examples, but they usually work for me. I think this one sounds valid, especially if he was fired for the allegations.

Yeah if action was taken on it, then it's more valid on account of it definitely not being an entry shoehorned in by a singular troper, which is how a lot of misuse comes about.

From Clone High

This reads like a rejected uncited Unfortunate Implications entry.

(Also Ambiguously Brown is when ethnicity is not touched on; if the character is explicitly Egyptian, then it's not an example)

YMMV.Bob Roberts: I assume both of these can be cut for ROCEJ?

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the film, news and entertainment media all hate Roberts with a passion. Real life news and entertainment media would have a similar reaction to President Donald Trump. Yet both were still elected.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: For some viewers, the premise of the film becomes eerily prescient in light of the election of President Donald Trump, since Roberts was also an outsider who gained a fervent conservative following by posturing as a rebel. For other viewers, it was prescient as early as President George W. Bush's election.

In our experience, the Johnny Depp thing is far too contentious to discuss on this wiki at all. (People on the internet have a weird definition of "proven" when it comes to abuse allegations.)

Bringing up the following examples from YMMV.Mighty Ducks The Animated Series:

  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment: In "The Final Face Off" (the intended Season 1 finale), the Saurians' ship is crippled and crashes into the ocean. The protagonists wonder if they'll still see their foes again some day, and Nosedive says it depends on whether or not the show gets renewed for another season. It did not.

  • Harsher in Hindsight: There's a scene in "Beak to the Future" where the ducks shoot down one of Dragonus's ships and it crashes into a tower and explodes, which can't help but invoke 9/11 today, that scene may be the reason why that particular episode was not aired in syndication for very long.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Tanya's Omnitool might make modern viewers watching the show on Disney+ wonder if Commander Shepard is working with the Ducks, nevermind the fact that her teammate, Mallory, is Fem!Shep, herself right down to being a redheaded Action Girl.

Only the first one counts. The second one is generic "Anything with destroyed buildings and aircraft is 9/11" stuff that doesn't sound like it evokes that specific image, and the third is so riddled with Fan Myopia I can barely determine what it's trying to say.
