Trivia / SMG4's Mario Bloopers

Go To

  • Black Sheep Hit: "Mario Goes to the Fridge to Get a Glass Of Milk" was, in SMG4's words, a shitpost. Despite that, it ended up becoming one of the channel's most viewed videos and was seen as one of the best videos of 2019 for its Serial Escalation and sheer insanity.
  • Blooper: In Meggy's debut appearance, her eyes constantly changed color, being pink, green or blue depending on the shot. Luke later admitted that this was just him being inconsistent.
  • Advertisement:
  • Breakthrough Hit: "Who let the chomp out" is considered to be the blooper that really started to bring attention to the channel, becoming his most viewed video rather quickly and keeping that position years after it was uploaded.
  • Colbert Bump: Jakob Ahlbom saw a slight bump due to one of his songs, Distant Echo, being used in "Meggy's Destiny" when Meggy says goodbye to Desti.
  • Content Leak: A day before "Mario goes to subway and purchases 1 tuna sub with extra mayo" was to be released, an upload error caused "The Resurrection" to be temporarily released early as unlisted, while 2 other privated episodes (the aforementioned Season 11 premiere and "The Intruder...") were seen on the channel's playlist.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer:
    • In "Final Hours", Francis' ultimate creation, Super Saiyan God Goku, is depicted as Goku in his Super Saiyan Blue transformation. Super Saiyan God is the red-haired transformation.
    • Advertisement:
    • A number of them concerning the Splatoon series:
      • The universe of Splatoon takes place 12,000 years into the future where humans become extinct. In this universe, they coexist in the same world.
      • An in-universe example happens in "The Mario Showdown": in "If Mario Was In... Splatoon", Mario went to Inkopolis through a sewer tunnel. In the former video, Inkopolis is easily accessible and can be driven to normally.
      • Inklings are born as squids and then once they turn fourteen they develop human-like qualities. In "Final Hours", Meggy transformed into a human by losing all of her ink to Francis' machine, as if Inklings are the opposite; humans with squid-like qualities.
    • In "Sans's First Day In Smash Bros", Papyrus refers to Sans as his little brother, but in the Undertale canon, it's Sans who is Papyrus's elder brother. Papyrus might be referring to size instead of age, though.
    • Advertisement:
    • If New Super Duper Mario Plus Ultra is a descendant of Mario, then he should be referring to Luigi as his great-uncle, not his great-grandpa.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • SMG4 is among the people who believe the Anime Arc was a little too long.
    • In the 2020 AMA, SMG4 admitted that "The Hangover" was an episode he disliked due to making the entire episode backwards, making it much more difficult and time consuming than he wanted.
  • Creator's Favorite:
    • The 2015 QnA confirmed that SMG4's favorite character is Rocks, but the 2020 QnA had him confirm that Steve is his favorite because he is "chill", which was actually implied in the 2015 QnA.
    • This video confirms that Kevin's favorite character is Fishy Boopkins. He's easily the character Kevin has the most fun writing for, and the audience loves him as well for being a friendly, yet nerdy loser among his group of friends.
    • Luke and Kevin have a particular fondness for both "If Mario Was In... Splatoon" and "The Ultimate Gamer", the debut episodes of Meggy and Tari, respectively: the former because the process that went into animating Meggy is what inspired them to pursue their dream career in animation, and the latter because of its ties to Meta Runner, their first fully animated series.
  • Creator's Pest: Five Nights at Freddy's in general became this to SMG4, presumably due to the amount of fans overhyping it and asking for more spaghettiria videos, likely being why SMG4 stopped at the adaptation of the third game until Ultimate Custom Night piqued his interest again. Even then, SMG4 In-Universe makes his disdain for it and the requests for it clear.
  • Defictionalization:
    • theawesomario, Mario's YouTube channel seen in "YouTube Mario" is an actual channel.
    • Additionally, while these channels are unaffiliated with Glitch Productions, fans have defictionalized some of the channels in the MarioTube videos, specifically Awesome Bob Glitchy 4 and the aforementioned Weegeepie.
    • Bob's SoundCloud from the Rapper Bob arc is also an existing SoundCloud channel.
    • SMG4's tweet about Meggy having "big meaty claws" from "My Mario Academia" exists.
  • Deleted Scene: Several 2017 episodes had several additional scenes that don't make the cut for various reasons, though some were uploaded to the secondary channel, TheAwesomeMario later on.
  • Descended Creator:
    • Ellen Barclay, the Production Manager and Secretary for Glitch Productions, provided the vocals for Meggy in WOTFI 2018-19 and Saiko's singing in "Doki Doki Mario Club" and "Mario and the Diss Track".
    • Assistant editor James Bailey voices Fuego the Water Bottle and Mr. Resetti in "Mario's Magical TV" and SMG3 as of "Mario's Spicy Day".
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Before the canonical name was revealed, Shroomy's demon hunter side, Anti-Shroomy, had many nicknames such as Bluey, Doomy, and The Doom Shroom among others.
    • Melony (a watermelon with Meggy's beanie and headphones) was often called "Melly" by fans before its official name was revealed.
  • Harpo Does Something Funny: The climax of "If Mario was In... Splatoon", where Mario decides to do things his own way, was entirely unscripted, with Kevin having told Luke to just go crazy with it.
  • Hey, It's That Place!:
  • I Knew It!:
    • How the Waluigi Arc would end. Since Wario made a promise to bring Waluigi home and treat him better in "Mario The Scam Artist", and acceptance was Waluigi's Logical Weakness, it was impossible not to assume that Wario would eventually talk Waluigi down by openly accepting him. And sure enough, that's exactly what happens, albeit with a little effort.
    • While not everyone figured it out, a good majority of people guessed that Francis was behind Meggy's kidnapping since he was around to see how Ink Weaver was powered up through Inkling Ink and his continued fawning over Ink Weaver in "Mario Saves Anime".
    • A few aspects of SMG4's fourth story arc were guessed ahead of time:
      • That the arc would center around YouTube since the site and Susan had become a common theme of the early episodes of the arc before they were known to be part of the arc.
      • That SMG3 would be the Big Bad due to "Mario's Spicy Day" implying he would return for revenge, Word of God confirming SMG3 would have a bigger role, and him getting a voice actor, which is usually a sign of a character getting an important role.
      • SMG3's master plan being replacing the main cast with his own cast due to the WOTFI 2020 trailer outright showcasing this.
      • Meggy getting a permanent English voice due to "Mario Gets【Woke】" showcasing Lizzie's voice for Meggy when her voice got temporarily changed to English by The YouTube Remote.
    • Meggy's departure. With WOTFI 2020 giving her a professional VA, many fans started speculating that she was getting her own series, citing the many changes made to her character over the years to make her a full OC. When said series was teased in the GLITCH channel's introduction video and hints of it started appearing within SMG4, many believed it was only a matter of time before she left for Port Aurora in-series. "The Pursuit of Happiness" has her get a ticket to Port Aurora from her friends, with a special video showing her departure.
  • In Memoriam:
    • "scatman's revenge" has one for Scatman John, who the video is about.
    • "Stupid Mario Maker 2" is dedicated to fellow YouTuber and gamer Etika, who committed suicide on June 19th, 2019.
  • Jossed:
    • One of the biggest theories about Tari was that she was voiced by Kevin's girlfriend. After "War of the Fat Italians 2018", Kevin himself confirmed that she wasn't. She is voiced by hired actress Celeste Notley-Smith.
    • The ending of "The Minecraft Plague" featuring Fishy Boopkins remaining a Minecraft character made some fans speculate that another arc was starting. The theory was shot down in "Mario Waits In Line For Some Spaghetti" where it's revealed that Boopkins is back to his normal self.
  • Meaningful Release Date: "The Tari Abnormality", which features Tari warping into a video game, was released at a time when Meta Runner, featuring the exact same premise, was just around the corner. Likewise, "If Mario Was In Meta Runner" was released a day after the first episode of Season 2 premiered.

    • "SMG4 Plays Merio Nerntendoes", his first non-blooper video, was released in 2015 on his birthday.
    • "SM64: Mario in real life!?" was his 200th video special.
  • Missing Episode:
    • "0% of spaghetti" was deliberately set to private on the same day the Hobo Bros reaction to it was released, likely out of a combination of it being heavily implied to be an Old Shame for Luke, the low quality of it, the Values Dissonance of the older bloopers being at its most prevalent (most prominently the scene where Mario shoots a random guy he thinks is a ninja, justifying it by saying "he was black?", which was cut entirely from their reaction) and Starman3's cameo (which was also cut).
    • "Toad has a Secret" was set to private some years after its debut, and can only now be seen through reactions. The likely reason for this was its short length combined with being made and edited by former editor Martin Yeung due to SMG4 being busy working on exams and making "SSENMODNAR DELUXE" at the time.
    • A video entitled "Goodbye Meggy" was uploaded as a 2020 April Fool's Day prank to fool SMG4's Discord server into believing Meggy was leaving the series. It instead consisted of The King Crane testing a Pickle Rick mod in Grand Theft Auto and later had the video's thumbnail set to FAttY SPiNS' "Doin' Your Mom". It was eventually removed several minutes afterward. It can be found reuploaded here.
  • Name's the Same:
    • The Battletoads (Justice Crew) shares its name with the other Battletoads, most likely as a passing reference or pun.
    • "Wild, Wild Mario" features a Western town called Mushroom Mesa, which had no relation to a level in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content:
    • Many of SMG4's earlier videos, particularly from 2011-2013, had their ideas conceived by various fans.
    • Each "War of the Fat Italians" entry from 2014 onward has the fans send in comments on what Mario and SMG4 should do against each other.
    • The 2 million and 3 million Ssenmodnars are comprised of segments provided by fans.
    • The 4 million special was a series of scenarios posted on the SMG4 subreddit, with fans being given an opportunity to fill in the blanks. The highest rated posts would then be the one used for that specific scenario.
  • Old Shame: SMG4 is ashamed of his very first video, first shown by his shock at seeing it In-Universe in "Mario goes to DIDNEY WORL". In 2020, he explained the very roundabout process of making it, having regretted the way it was recorded and how it turned out, likely explaining why it was remade a year later.
  • Production Foreshadowing: Tari's entire character and her abilities turned out to be early hints that she was getting her own series, Meta Runner, which Luke and Kevin had been working on a full year before its announcement, even predating "Mario the Ultimate Gamer".
  • Real Life Writes the Plot:
    • The entirety of the Waluigi Arc was caused by the decision for Waluigi to keep his Assist Trophy status in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate instead of being Promoted to Playable.
    • "Steve vs Smash Bros" was made in direct response to Steve getting into Ultimate, releasing just over a week after the reveal.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: The WoopWoop Kingdom's national anthem is Trina's "Pull Over".
  • Recycled Script:
    • A number of post-2017 bloopers are this, 2018's "The Mario Mafia" and 2019's "If Mario Was In...Minecraft" and "Smart Mario" have the exact same premise as 2012's "The mushroom mafia", "world of craftmine", and "smart(ass) mario", respectively.
    • The first part of the Anime Arc is pretty much a more light-hearted version of 2013's "Spaghetti law".
  • Refitted for Sequel: The Splatfest tournament of Meggy's Destiny was originally intended to be in "If Mario was In... Splatoon", but was cut down to the one match as Kevin realized it would be too much work for them to do at the time.
  • Relationship Voice Actor: Kevin, SMG4's older brother, voices various characters in the series, the most prominent being Fishy Boopkins.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: The initial wave of allegations against Starman3 led to his character being removed from the series.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers:
    • Due to "Mission For Peach", "Castle Jumping = Time Travel = Zombies", "Crime Time" and "Quest for a Console" getting DMCA'd, the videos are completely muted.
    • "The Adventures Of Mario And Luigi Ep 3" and "the 1337 p0lice" were blocked in certain countries sometime before early 2019. The latter has since been reversed.
    • "We're going on a Luigi hunt" was blocked in certain countries by WMG for use of Careless Whisper. WMG also blocked "ṩṩἔᾗмὄḋᾗᾄʀ 11 (800K Special)" for similar reasons, which has since been reversed.
    • The Hobo Bros reaction to "Freddy's Spaghetteria" had Luke and Kevin admit that a big reason they stopped using many of the voice lines and music clips commonly used in older videos was because of YouTube's tightening copyright system making it all but impossible to use most of them.
    • "I Can't Believe It's Not SMG4" has a scene where "My Heart Will Go On" was swapped out with a more generic somber piano tune two days after its upload date—taking the sound effects and Mario's Little "No" with it—undoubtedly due to copyright reasons. You can still hear the original song on certain peoples' reactions.
  • Screwed by the Network:
    • In mid-2017, SMG4 was forced to merge the "Retarded64" and "bloopers" series into the "SMG4" series thanks to YouTube introducing a new policy for "family entertainment" characters, causing every Retarded64 video on the channel to get demonetized just for having the word "Retard" in the title. SMG4 later rebranded the old videos to R64.
Inappropriate use of family entertainment characters: Videos depicting family entertainment characters or content, whether animated or live action, engaged in violent, sexual, vile, or otherwise inappropriate behavior, even if done for comedic purposes, are not eligible for advertising.
    • Since mid-2018, YouTube's increasingly strict and uncompromising crackdown on adult content in order to push their "family friendly" image has forced SMG4 to censor many of his jokes, primarily anything that involves "fuck" and "shit". However, SMG4 has since relied on sponsors and even parodied the crackdown in the mid-2018 blooper "Mario Preschool" which satirizes it to a T.
  • Series Hiatus:
    • Ever since the start of 2019, the series takes a break for the first couple of weeks of the new year, and resumes later on.
    • August 2019 had Luke and Kevin taking a week long break from the series (and Meta Runner) for the sake of their mental health.
    • The third Saturday of October 2019 had a Meta Runner Crossover with TheOdd1sOut and Egoraptor of Game Grumps instead of the normally scheduled video.
  • Similarly Named Works:
  • Unintentional Period Piece: SMG4 videos have a tendency of referencing various memes and franchises that were popular at the time they were uploaded. Because of this, it can be easier to tell when a video was made. Especially evident with "breaking walls", which featured YouTube the way it was when the video was uploaded in 2012.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In the description of Tubbie TV, SMG4 said he was originally going to make the video in the form of a Ssenmodnar, but he decided to use a few instead of random things to keep it "PHRESH".
    • Hotel Mario was originally going to be named either Bellhop Mario or Live Like Hobos.
    • Retarded64: Freddy's Spaghettiria was also originally going to be named Five Days at Mario's.
    • Piantissimo from "Stupid Mario Sunshine" was going to be a recurring character, but the spot ultimately ended up going to Meggy, stated below.
    • "If Mario was In... Splatoon":
      • Meggy was intended to be a One-Shot Character, but her unexpected popularity among the fanbase convinced Luke and Kevin to give her more and more focus until she was made a major cast member.
      • The Splatfest was originally scripted as an entire multi-round tournament, but Kevin realized it would be too much work for them back then. This concept would be recycled for Meggy's Destiny.
      • Meggy's team was originally going to win the Splatfest, but Luke convinced Kevin to change it so they lost. They both consider this the first great "mistake" they made with her, crediting it as the reason Meggy became a Breakout Character.
    • The Waluigi Arc was, in Luke and Kevin's own words, a complete accident. There were many aspects of it that were revised and changed as Luke and Kevin decided to roll with it and give the characters development. It was to the point that the arc almost didn't come into being at all.
      • "Waluigi's Time" was originally going to have Waluigi leave the Mushroom Kingdom after being rejected and go to a temple to undergo training, meeting Desti along the way, before returning stronger than ever.
      • "Mario and The T-Pose Virus" was originally going to end with Shroomy eating the T-Pose Mushroom without Waluigi's involvement, but they thought there would be no point to the ending and decided to have Waluigi be behind it. It was after seeing the huge amount of positive fan reaction to the episode that they decided to keep it going and plan out the whole arc from that point on.
      • For "War of the Fat Italians 2018", SMG4 went through 3 iterations of the rap battle before settling on the final product. Also, the therapist at the end was originally going to be a bootleg Dr. Phil model rather than SMG3.
    • Tari was going to have a much more robotic appearance with headphones, a Bomberman-style antenna, a Rayman-style lack of a neck, and a D-pad for a right eye.
    • "Mario the Ultimate Gamer" was conceived over a year before its release. It was going to be about Mario competing in Esports and needing a trainer, said trainer would be Tari in a dumpster in the back of Peach's castle.
    • Collab entries by Meneer en mevrouw trein and Akuago, the Jungle Expeditioner were planned to appear in the 3 million collab, but were ultimately scrapped. Despite this, their names are still listed in the credits.
    • The Anime Arc was also largely different than what it ended up being:
      • Boopkins was originally slated to be the main character, and he would be trying to make a company for smuggling anime into the Mushroom Kingdom following the Anime Ban. There was even a logo made for the company. Luke and Kevin ultimately didn't think they could make an entire arc out of the idea, so it was changed into what it is now.
      • The Splatfest half of the Arc was originally its own arc idea, with Meggy going to do Splatfest until she gets attacked in the middle of the competition. The conspirators would've originally been an alien/shark species with their own location, but Luke and Kevin realized it would be too much work for them, especially since they were still working on Season 1 of Meta Runner. They ultimately kept the base idea and merged that with the base idea for the Anime Arc.
      • Axol originally was supposed to be the Big Bad of the arc, as many had speculated, but Luke and Kevin ultimately didn't know how Axol would be able to pull off kidnapping the Inkling population on his own (this was before coming up with Inkweaver), nor what his motive would be for doing so. He was ultimately switched over to the good guys' side in order to make everything easier to explain and Francis was made the Big Bad in his stead.
    • Meggy's human redesign had many iterations made, with the development spanning for months, before settling on the final product.
    • Melony's human form was actually supposed to debut in "SMG4: War Of The Simps", being made by Nathaniel Bandy's waifu machine. However, the model couldn't be completed in time, so she was just relegated to a cameo, while her human form would eventually debut in "SMG4: Mario's Mask Of Madness".
  • The Wiki Rule: The SuperMarioGlitchy4 Wiki.
  • Word of Saint Paul:
    • Prinplup14, better known as Enzo, has stated that the reason SMG4 doesn't use the YouTube Rangers anymore is because he wanted to make his own story rather than using YouTubers, which is why they haven't appeared much since 2015. Enzo has stated that he is fine with this and asks that fans stop bothering Luke about it.
    • Not long after the release of WOTFI 2020, James Bailey confirmed that SMG3 would still appear in videos, meaning Luke's stating that he was Killed Off for Real by Ugandan Knuckles at the end of the video was just a joke, something that would be fully confirmed at the end of the Halloween Episode.
  • Writer Conflicts With Canon: A minor example. Kevin stated in their reaction to Meggy's wiki page that Meggy shouldn't swear. There have been instances, both before and after this statement, where she has uttered curse words.
  • Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: By SMG4's own admission in 2020, the writing process for the episodes boils down to him and Kevin taking walks and spouting out ideas until they decide which one they should go with. In the Hobo Bros reaction to WOTFI 2014, he admitted that this also applied back when he was on his own, with him planning out a skit and then deciding on the fly what would happen next as he went about making it.
