Trivia tropes with their own sub-page:

  • Acclaimed Flop: Some very well-received videos have ended up getting very low views:
    • "The Corn Trip" was praised for giving Bob and Rob A Day in the Limelight, yet took forever to get past the 1M view mark. The team seem to think its because of Mario's absence, as the thumbnail(s) and the changed title ("Mario's Corn Trip") have him prominently featured despite only appearing for the last 10 seconds of the video.
    • "Mario's Internet Safety", despite being acclaimed for being one of the best episodes of 2021 pacing and humor-wise, joined "The Corn Trip" in getting less views. FM acknowledged this on Twitter.
  • Acting for Two:
    • Doubling with Talking To Herself, Lizzie Freeman voiced both Meggy and Shadow-Meggy in "The Pursuit of Happiness" and "My New Adventure". The reason it counts as both is because Shadow-Meggy manifests physically and isn't always just a voice. This also carried over into Meggy's solo series Sunset Paradise.
    • In "Into the Marioverse", Celeste Notley-Smith voiced three different versions of Tari, one of whom is a pirate.
    • In two episodes of the Revelations Arc, SMG1 (one of the heroes) and the Box Club Leader (one of the main antagonists) argue with each other. They're both voiced by Paul Stylianou, also known as Mediexcalibur2012.
    • Series creator Luke Lerdwichagul voices SMG4, Shroomy, JubJub, and Wheeler, along with plenty of one-shot characters. But as of 2023 there are surprisingly few instances of his characters interacting vocally.
      • He raps for SMG4 and Shroomy in "Objection!"
      • SMG4 fights Wheeler in "Mario Steals Your Liver" after the latter buys Mario's stolen liver.
    • An interesting and very invoked case with Niles and SMG0. They're both voiced by one guy (Michael Kovach) and merge into one being (Eldritch Zero). Actually a double-case because Kovach also voiced Fred, MAGE's avatar whose accidental death caused Niles to complete his descent into madness.
    • Kevin Lerdwichagul, Luke's brother and also the series's head writer, voices Fishy Boopkins and also voiced Axol during the latter's 2½ years as a cast member (plus later cameos). The two conversed with each other during Axol's debut episode and several more times while Axol was still around.
    • As of late-2022, Elsie Lovelock voices three recurring SMG4 characters. Sometimes they appear together.
      • In "The Meme Games 2022" she voiced Meggy (her primary role she'd then-recently inherited from Lizzie Freeman) and sang for Saiko. Her third character is Karen the Cat, who also appeared in that episode but at the time only used Femme-Scout voice clips.
      • She rapped for both Meggy and Karen in "Objection!", the song for War of the Fat Italians 2022.
      • In "The Totally Safe & Legal SMG4 Show", she again took over for Lizzie Freeman by voicing Pomni's cameo in addition to Meggy (Lizzie voices Pomni in The Amazing Digital Circus proper).
      • She revealed after its premiere that, along with Meggy, she also voiced the young Inkling girl Meggy and Tari are training at the end of WESTERN SPAGHETTI. Karen also has speaking lines during the movie.
  • Approval of God:
    • Doug Walker watched "Mario's Bed and Breakfast", joking about being angry about his appearance before saying he looked beautiful. Channel Awesome also left a comment on the episode joking about the Critic's appearance.
    • Mark Haynes (also known as Alvin-Earthworm), creator of Super Mario Bros. Z, has commented his approval on his creation being included among the Newgrounds worlds that Mario and SMG4 go to in "If Mario Was in Newgrounds".
    • Luke Lerdwichagul himself commented on how well Sunflower's SMG4 Iceberg video was made and said that some of the things discussed in the video may or may not be true.
    • A variant: "THE BOOTLEG DIMENSION", which is about the infamous 7 Grand Dad bootleg, gained a comment from the person who started the meme in the first place, Vinesauce Joel, stating it as being "spicy".
    • Doobus Goobus was flattered, if a little taken aback, when he learned that SMG4 used audio from his videos in "Mario Try Not To Cringe Challenge."
  • Ascended Fanon:
    • When "Into the Dark Web" came out, many thought that the ending would have Zero possess Bob somehow. While this didn't happen, the ending of "The Day HE Arrived" reveals Zero does have this ability, with him possessing Axol.
    • Meggy with a ponytail is now officially canon come "To Become a God".
    • Of all things, a Splatshipping video between Mario & Meggy is infamous for THIS scene (the original video was deleted, this is its only remnant). In addition to reanimations of the scene by other fans (like this), Glitch discovered it and featured part of the audio in "Mario Reacts To Nintendo Memes 2". It's also one of the fan Among Us Kills made by JZBoy.
      • The first part of that line has since become a go-to clip for whenever Glitch Team need Luigi to be freaked out at Mario.
    • Around a time period where people made characters possessed by Zero, Mel0ny briefly appears inside Melony's subconscious in the Revelations movie.
    • A few interpretations of Zero's original form (specifically interpretations by Nemesispax1456 on reddit) actually ended up being surprisingly accurate to his canon self in Revelations, to the point where it could be interpreted that SMG4 used these interpretations to make Zero's original form.
    • Several models made by C_Art have been included in various SMG4 videos, including the aforementioned Mel0ny. The one of Auri Bori made a cameo appearance in the 2021 Christmas special, the Beta Tari model made it into "If Mario Was In... Sonic Movie 2 and "Into the Marioverse", and the College Tari model appeared in a Mario Does Things video ("Mario Does Pranks"), before making its way to an official SMG4 video ("The Very Safe & Legal SMG4 Show"), which also has C_Art's College Saiko and refreshed College Meggy models.
  • Ascended Fan Nickname: Following the confirmation in "Mario And The Backrooms" that Axol was being possessed by Zero, fans started to nickname the abomination "Ax0l". In "The Final Piece", after the possessed Axol transforms for the second time, his subtitles begin to label him as "Ax0l" (though the name change is subtle due to the text being rendered in Caps Lock). The official GMod workshop page for the Genesis Arc ragdolls outright confirm that his name has indeed changed to Ax0l.
    • Similarly, many fans had dubbed Melony's pet axolotl "Axol Jr." before it would become official in "All I Want For Christmas Is Mario To FREAKIN BEHAVE."
  • Black Sheep Hit: "Mario Goes to the Fridge to Get a Glass of Milk" was, in SMG4's words, a shitpost. Despite that, it ended up becoming one of the channel's most viewed videos and was seen as one of the best videos of 2019 for its Serial Escalation and sheer insanity.
  • Blooper: In Meggy's debut appearance, her eyes constantly changed color, being pink, teal, grey, or blue depending on the shot. Luke later admitted that this was just him being inconsistent.
    • This was constantly the case in earlier seasons, where the black bars of the green screen weren't cropped out and the fraps number were constantly appearing in some shots.
  • Breakthrough Hit: "Who Let the Chomp Out" is considered to be the blooper that really started to bring attention to the channel, becoming his most viewed video rather quickly and keeping that position ever since.
    • Luke and Kevin see "If Mario Was In... Baldi's Basics" as this. In their Hobo Bros reaction to it, they claim it saved the channel.
  • Colbert Bump: Jakob Ahlbom saw a slight bump due to one of his songs, Distant Echo, being used in "Meggy's Destiny" when Meggy says goodbye to Desti.
  • Content Leak:
    • A day before "Mario Goes to Subway and Purchases 1 Tuna Sub with Extra Mayo" was to be released, an upload error caused "The Resurrection" to be temporarily released early as unlisted, while 2 other privated episodes (the aforementioned Season 11 premiere and "The Intruder...") were seen on the channel's playlist.
    • A day before the episode was released, SMG4 accidentally tweeted the thumbnail for "If Mario was Spiderman". He deleted the tweet sometime afterwards.
    • Fishy Boopkins' second redesign was leaked in certain background banners before its proper reveal.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer:
    • In "Final Hours", Francis's ultimate creation, Super Saiyan God Goku, is depicted as Goku in his Super Saiyan Blue transformation. Super Saiyan God is the red-haired transformation.
    • Inklings are born as squids and then once they turn fourteen they develop human-like qualities. In "Final Hours", Meggy is transformed into a human by losing all of her ink to Francis's machine, as if Inklings are the opposite; humans with squid-like qualities. The series has doubled down on this take with photos of Meggy as a child still in a humanoid form.
    • In "Sans's First Day In Smash Bros", Papyrus refers to Sans as his little brother, but in the Undertale canon, it's Sans who is Papyrus's elder brother. Papyrus might be referring to size instead of age, though.
    • If New Super Duper Mario Plus Ultra is a descendant of Mario, then he should be referring to Luigi as his great-uncle, not his great-grandpa.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • SMG4 is among the people who believe the Anime Arc was a little too long.
    • In the 2020 AMA, SMG4 admitted that "The Hangover" was an episode he disliked due to making the entire episode backwards, making it much more difficult and time consuming than he wanted.
    • SMG4 admitted in the 5 million sub live stream that the Rapper Bob arc is his least favorite and wished to make it more grand instead of Bob just leaving his friends.
    • SMG4 is ashamed of his very first video, first shown by it being depicted as his worst nightmare In-Universe in "Mario goes to DIDNEY WORL". In 2020, he explained the very roundabout process of making it, having regretted the way it was recorded and how it turned out, likely explaining why it was remade a year later.
    • In some Hobo Bros reaction videos, Luke indicated his displeasure towards the vast majority of videos he made prior to "Seaside Stupidity Part 1" as this. That video introduced Fishy Boopkins and marks Kevin slowly becoming more involved with the production. To really drive home the point, Kevin in one fell swoop called nearly every video made before his involvement "cancer".
  • Creator's Favorite:
    • The 2015 QnA confirmed that SMG4's favorite character is Rocks, but the 2020 QnA had him confirm that Steve is his favorite because he is "chill", which was actually implied in the 2015 QnA.
    • This video confirms that Kevin's favorite character is Fishy Boopkins. He's easily the character Kevin has the most fun writing for, and the audience loves him as well for being a friendly yet nerdy loser among his group of friends. Kevin also voices Boopkins, so he sometimes functions in fourth-wall gags as Kevin's Author Avatar.
    • X has stated that Bob is one of his favorite characters because of him being really funny to write.
  • Creator's Favorite Episode:
    • Luke and Kevin have a particular fondness for both "If Mario Was In... Splatoon" and "Mario The Ultimate Gamer", the debut episodes of Meggy and Tari, respectively: the former because the process that went into animating Meggy is what inspired them to pursue their dream career in animation, and the latter because of its ties to Meta Runner, their first fully animated series.
    • Luke stated in the 5 million sub stream that the Genesis Arc was his favorite because he liked the emotional impact it had on the series.
  • Creator's Pest: Five Nights at Freddy's in general became this to SMG4, presumably due to the amount of fans overhyping it and asking for more spaghettiria videos, likely being why SMG4 stopped at the adaptation of the third game until Ultimate Custom Night piqued his interest again. Even then, SMG4 In-Universe makes his disdain for it and the requests for it clear.
  • Defictionalization:
    • theawesomario, Mario's YouTube channel seen in "YouTube Mario" is an actual channel.
    • While these channels are unaffiliated with Glitch Productions, fans have defictionalized some of the channels seen in the MarioTube videos, specifically Awesome Bob Glitchy 4 and Weegeepie.
    • Bob's SoundCloud from the Rapper Bob arc is an existing SoundCloud channel.
  • Deleted Scene:
    • Several 2017 episodes had several additional scenes that don't make the cut for various reasons, though some were uploaded to the secondary channel, TheAwesomeMario later on.
    • A scene where the late Erik Cassel's Robloxian begs to be killed (complete with the asdfmovie soundbite) was cut from "If Mario Was In... Roblox" shortly after its release due to backlash. You can still see the scene on a few reactions.
    • "Stupid Mario Golf" was going to have a callback to the Waluigi arc when Waluigi would have controlled Master Hand again.
    • "Mario Gets His PINGAS Stuck In Car Door" cut out a scene where Kaizo would get his own crotch stuck in a door.
    • "Mario Reacts to Nintendo Memes 11 ft. Meggy" cuts short the Mario Kart Wii scene where Meggy slams into a wall and explodes – Paul (MediExcalibur) had animated a additional few seconds where Mario catches Meggy and tells her, "You're the superstar!".
  • Descended Creator:
    • Ellen Barclay, then Production Manager and Secretary for Glitch Productions, provided the vocals for Meggy in WOTFI 2017-18 and Saiko's singing in "Doki Doki Mario Club" and "Mario and the Diss Track".
    • Assistant editor James Bailey voices Fuego the Water Bottle, Mr. Resetti in "Mario's Magical TV" and SMG3 as of "Mario's Spicy Day".
  • Executive Meddling: As revealed by FM, SMG4 was forced to make Starman3 more competent than the other characters, with FM coining him a Mary Sue.
  • Exiled from Continuity:
    • Due to the controversies of his real life self, Starman3 has been effectively barred from ever appearing in the series again. Not only do many of Luke and Kevin's reaction videos have scenes with him removed, but he was also one of the few recolors to not appear in the 10th anniversary.
    • Enzo is no longer in content made officially due to an unknown fan consistently pestering SMG4 to add him in a modern blooper. However, this didn't stop him from appearing in a fan-submitted segment in the 3,000,000 subscriber special.
  • Fake American:
    • Elsie Lovelock is British and proud of it. She replaced the very American Lizzie Freeman as Meggy's voice actress in 2022, managing to copy Lizzie's style perfectly. She also replicates Karen's Boston accent (which comes from femme-Scout voice clips). Additionally, she voices GLITCH's official spokeswaifu Bo, who has appeared in a couple of SMG4 episodes, with an American accent.
    • Kevin, who is Australian of course, puts on American accents for Boopkins and Axol… sort of.
  • Fake Brit: Mr. Puzzles has an English accent, but his voice actor, Brendan Blaber, is American.
  • Harpo Does Something Funny: Episode scripts usually only contain dialogue (mainly for the voice actors who aren't Glitch staff) and plot important actions, allowing the editors to adlib scenes for extra comedic effect.
    • The climax of "If Mario was In... Splatoon", where Mario decides to do things his own way, was entirely unscripted, with Kevin having told Luke to just go crazy with it.
    • This was also the case with the scene where Swag activates defense mode on his tank in "Mario Gets His PINGAS Stuck In The Door".
  • Hey, It's That Place!:
  • In Memoriam:
    • "Scatman's Revenge" has one for Scatman John, who the video is about and who passed away in 1999.
    • "Stupid Mario Maker 2" is dedicated to fellow YouTuber and gamer Etika, who committed suicide on June 19th, 2019.
  • Inspiration for the Work: The original SM64-styled bloopers were inspired by the works of Megaman765, MarioMario54321 and MATTHEWGU4. The Gmod format the series evolved into was largely inspired by The Gmod Idiot Box and Team Fabulous 2.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes:
    • On November 4, 2020, the episode "0% of Spaghetti" was privatized because of Luke and Kevin reacting to it on the Hobo Bros channel, most likely because it was heavily implied to be a source of Old Shame for Luke, the low quality of it, the Values Dissonance of the older bloopers being at its most prevalent (most prominently the scene where Mario shoots a random guy he thinks is a ninja and justifying it by saying "he was black?", which was quickly cut entirely from their reaction) and Starman3's cameos (which were also cut due to his real-life self's various scandals). The only way you can view the episode now is by reuploads.
    • Around November 2020, "The SMG4 Weight Losers" was also privatized, for similar reasons to "0% of Spaghetti", as there were a bunch of jokes that were seen as Values Dissonance, in which there is a scene where a black man was killed, as well as containing a Nazi flag in a later scene. You can also watch it via reuploads.
    • The livestreams that often air before a movie-length episode or WOTFI cannot be archived due to length, so the only parts that survive are whatever fans are able to rip.
    • Any episode starring Starman3 (i.e: "SMG4 Joins The YTR" and "Starman3 Gets 5,000 Subs") also falls under this category, thanks to Starman3's pedo allegations and portraying him in a positive light.
    • Sometime around 2017, a video titled "Toad Has A Secret", was privatized most likely due to its short length combined with being made and edited by former editor Martin Yeung due to SMG4 being busy working on exams and making "SSENMODNAR DELUXE" at the time. Aside from it being viewed by reactions, it mostly remained lost for several years until in February 2021, where someone found a reupload of the video.
    • A video entitled "Goodbye Meggy" was uploaded as a 2020 April Fool's Day prank to fool SMG4's Discord server into believing Meggy was leaving the series. It instead consisted of The King Crane testing a Pickle Rick mod in Grand Theft Auto and later had the video's thumbnail set to FAttY SPiNS' "Doin' Your Mom". It was removed several minutes later. It can be found reuploaded here.
    • When they were ongoing, most of the Meggy livestreams were privatized/unlisted shortly after they were uploaded. You can now only view them via either reuploads or if you have some of their links.
    • Two announcement videos made in 2016, "I want your help :)" and "IMPORTANT ANNOUCEMENT - Final stretch" were also privatized, most likely due to Luke already finishing his exams, and already making ""SSENMODNAR DELUXE".
  • The Merch: See here. There's a lot, most of which only had a single production run so have been gone for some time.
  • Meaningful Release Date: "The Tari Abnormality", which features Tari warping into a video game, was released at a time when Meta Runner, featuring the exact same premise, was just around the corner. Likewise, "If Mario Was In Meta Runner" was released a day after the first episode of Season 2 premiered.

    • "SMG4 Plays Merio Nerntendoes", Luke's first non-blooper video, was released in 2015 on his birthday.
    • "Mario in real life!?" was his 200th video special.
    • Unsurprisingly, "The SMG4 Movie: 10 Year Anniversary Special" was released on May 8th, 2021, exactly 10 years after the release of the very first episode, "The Cake is a Lie".
  • Missing Episode:
    • As mentioned above, the episodes "0% of Spaghetti", "The SMG4 Weight Losers", "SMG4 Joins The YTR", "Starman3 Gets 5,000 Subs!", and "Toad Has A Secret" were all privatized by Luke and Kevin.
    • After Glitch Productions got doxxed, "SM64: Mario In Real Life!? (200 Vid Special)" and "Mario In Real Life: Mario Monster Mash (700k Special!)" were both privated due to safety concerns.
  • Non-Singing Voice: Ax0l is voiced by MATTHEWGU4 during the rap battle of "War of the Fat Italians 2021" rather than Kevin. In the same video, Melony's singing is done by hackerling instead of Wolfychu. Some time later during a Q&A session, Wolfychu revealed that she was trying to learn to sing properly at the time.
    • Saiko's speaking voice is a bunch of stock anime voice clips. Her singing voice was provided by Ellyn Barclay for her debut and the song "Darkest Hour" before being replaced by Elsie Lovelock for all subsequent songs.
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content:
    • Many of SMG4's earlier videos, particularly from 2011-2013, had their ideas conceived by various fans.
    • Each "War of the Fat Italians" entry from 2014 onward has the fans send in comments on what Mario and SMG4 should do against each other.
    • The 2 and 3 million Ssenmodnars, as well as the 2020 special, are comprised of segments provided by fans.
    • The 4 million special was a series of scenarios posted on the SMG4 subreddit, with fans being given an opportunity to fill in the blanks. The highest rated posts would then be the one used for that specific scenario.
    • Kaizo's design was created by fans as part of Luke's 5 million subscriber livestream.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Due to her busy schedule, Lizzie Freeman mutually agreed with Glitch to step down as the voice of Meggy in May 2022, replaced by Elsie Lovelock as of "DO NOT ENTER". It was an amicable parting, as Lizzie not only gave Elsie her full support (and requested fans do the same), but continues to work for GLITCH as Pomni in The Amazing Digital Circus. Amusingly, this Darrin was flipped when Elsie voiced Pomni during her SMG4 cameo.
    • Whenever Mario speaks and it's not Charles Martinet clips or an AI, VoicesExtremus typically provides the voice (along with Luigi's). In "Mario Waits For The Bus", however, he has a line where he's voiced by editor Paul Stylianou (MediExcalibur2012) due to a Throw It In! request from Luke.
    • Tari's fully-voiced dialogue were formerly provided by Celeste Notley-Smith for years. As of "The Day My Arm Went Psycho", she is now voiced by Lottie Bourne. However, it's been revealed that Celeste was not alerted about this; in fact, later on February 27th, 2024, the head of VO at Glitch, Jasmine Yang, revealed on Discord that she forgot to inform her and that it was a genuine mistake she took the blame for. By that point however, Robyn Barry-Cotter, a close friend and co-worker of Celeste, had already announced her departure as SMG2 due to the incident.
  • Post-Release Retitle: A small number of episodes have had their names changed shortly after being uploaded for one reason or another:
    • "Smart Mario" was changed to "If Mario Was Smart" long after its release, likely to avoid confusion with the earlier "Smart(ass) Mario".
    • "The Corn Trip" was changed to "Mario's Corn Trip" despite Mario having a very minor role in the episode.
    • "The Beginning Of The End" was changed to "The Day HE Arrived", likely to put the theory that the series was ending to rest.
    • "World War Monke" was changed to "Mario Goes To The Zoo" due to both its misleading title & Harsher in Hindsight considering the situation between Russia and Ukraine getting worse.
    • "You Know Mario Had To Do It To Em" was renamed "Mario Does It To Em".
    • "The Naughty Boy That Wouldn't Behave" was renamed "How To Train Your Mario".
    • "Bowling for Dummies" was renamed three times. First to "Mario Goes Bowling," then to "Stupid Mario Bowling," and then back to "Mario Goes Bowling".
    • "Mario Steals the American Constitution" dropped 'American' from its title, but not before a page was created on this site that retains the word.
  • Production Foreshadowing: Tari's entire character and her abilities turned out to be early hints that she was getting her own series, Meta Runner, which Luke and Kevin had been working on a full year before its announcement, even predating her debut in "Mario the Ultimate Gamer".
  • Promoted Fanboy:
    • BenJojoGV was a well-known user on the subreddit for his high-quality SFM screenshots. 2021 saw him getting hired to do thumbnail work on the series.
    • A user named John10v10 is relatively well known for creating the Human Meggy deluxe model, which also features a ponytail. SMG4 decided to use it as of mid-2021 starting with "She's Back!", and it stopped being used when Meggy had her 2nd redesign.
    • Weegeepie went from a Defictionalization of Luigi's YouTube channel to submitting content for SMG4's collabs to SMG4 himself participating in his submissions to other people's collabs. He even got to be a guest editor for "To Become a God".
    • sm64rise, known for making the "Saturn Moon" SM64 emulator, became one of SMG4's assistant writers in 2022.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot:
    • The entirety of the Waluigi Arc was caused by the decision for Waluigi to keep his Assist Trophy status in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate instead of being Promoted to Playable (as was the case with several other Assist Trophies including Little Mac, Isabelle, and Dark Samus).
    • "Steve vs Smash Bros" was made in direct response to Steve getting into Ultimate, releasing just over a week after the reveal.
    • As revealed by SMG4 following the arc's conclusion, the Lawsuit arc was inspired by his concerns that the channel would really get a DMCA from Nintendo. Hence, the arc concludes with SMG4's Author Avatar being permanently redesigned into a cartoon version of SMG4 himself instead of a Mario recolor (with SMG3 following suit), while Bob and Fishy Boopkins similarly received new designs that resembled but were still visually distinct from their original Garo and Spike models.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: The WoopWoop Kingdom's national anthem is Trina's "Pull Over".
  • Recycled Script: While basic concepts from the early years, or even early-modern years, have been recycled due to the sheer number of episodes, rarely are they complete retreads – often the newer episodes take the old idea in a completely different direction or spoof a different genre.
    • 2018's "The Mario Mafia" and 2019's "If Mario Was In...Minecraft" and "Smart Mario" have the exact same premise as 2012's "The Mushroom Mafia", "World of Craftmine", and "Smart(ass) Mario", respectively.
    • "Problematic Pipe Problems" rehashes plot elements from "A Fungus Among Us" and "Boil the Big Bully".
    • The first part of the Anime Arc is pretty much a more lighthearted version of 2013's "Spaghetti law".
    • The decision to kill off the main characters and have Mario save them all in the Lawsuit Arc was first done in the YouTube Arc, though the former was taken much more seriously.
    • Some 2023 episodes are actually quite similar to older episodes. Here are some examples:
      • "A Happy Little Road Trip" is quite similar to "Mario's Road Trip".
      • "Grand Theft Mario" shares similarities to "If Mario Was In... GTA IV"
      • "Ready to Ride" is similar to "Mario's Train Trip".
      • Fans quickly noticed similarities between WESTERN SPAGHETTI and the 2017 episode "Wild Wild Mario" before the former even premiered. Glitch acknowledged this by tweeting the link to the earlier episode. Just a few weeks after that movie, Mario would don his "Optimus Prime 3000" getup in a further Shout-Out.
      • "We Don't Talk About What Happened In The Elevator" is similar to "Snow Trapped".
      • "Mario Goes Cuckoo-Crazy" is similar to both "Mario vs Pokemon Go" and "Mario Gets Into NFTs".
  • Refitted for Sequel:
    • The Splatfest tournament of Meggy's Destiny was originally intended to be in "If Mario was In... Splatoon", but was cut down to the one match as Kevin realized it would be too much work for them to do at the time.
    • In a roundabout way, Axol being the villain of an arc ended up being recycled for the Genesis arc, while the idea of a friendly side character turning out to be the villain was recycled for the Revelations arc.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: The initial wave of allegations against Starman3 led to his character being removed from the series (and later, courtesy of FM, rendered Canon Discontinuity).
  • Schedule Slip: While it still aired on the same day as SMG4's usual videos, "The Other Universe" took longer to be released due to a scheduling error by SMG4.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers:
    • The Hobo Bros reaction to "Freddy's Spaghetteria" had Luke and Kevin admit that a big reason they stopped using many of the voice lines and music clips commonly used in older videos was because of YouTube's tightening copyright system making it all but impossible to use most of them.
    • Numerous videos have either been fully muted, partially muted, or blocked in certain countries for this reason over the years. Though nearly all of them have since been reversed, some examples still remain.
      • "I Can't Believe It's Not SMG4" has a scene where "My Heart Will Go On" was swapped out with a more generic somber piano tune two days after its upload date, taking the sound effects and Mario's Little "No" with it – undoubtedly for copyright reasons. Certain songs in future videos, like "If Mario Was In… Nickelodeon" and "Studying for Exams… But you're friends with Mario" were similarly replaced, if not outright muted. You can still hear the original songs in certain peoples' reactions.
      • A few of Mario's reactions to his SMG4 Crew videos fell to this when certain videos used some copyrighted music. Current videos affected are his Nintendo Memes videos (1 with the Waluigi cover of Hallelujah & Peach's singing, 2 with gangster music, & 5 with the Rickroll) & his TikTok compilation (the robot man submission). Again, the full versions can be seen in reaction videos.
  • Screwed by the Network:
    • In mid-2017, SMG4 was forced to merge the "Retarded64" and "bloopers" series into the "SMG4" series thanks to YouTube introducing a new policy for "family entertainment" characters, causing every Retarded64 video on the channel to get demonetized for having the word "Retard" in the title. SMG4 later rebranded the old videos to R64.
Inappropriate use of family entertainment characters: Videos depicting family entertainment characters or content, whether animated or live-action, engaged in violent, sexual, vile, or otherwise inappropriate behavior, even if done for comedic purposes, are not eligible for advertising.
    • Since mid-2018, YouTube's increasingly strict and uncompromising crackdown on adult content in order to push their "family-friendly" image has forced SMG4 to censor many of his jokes, primarily anything that involves "fuck" and "shit". However, SMG4 has since relied on sponsors and even parodied the crackdown in the mid-2018 blooper "Mario Preschool" which satirizes it to a T. He also lampshaded it in 2023 after deciding to make his "Ultimate Video" as we hear him talking to himself.
SMG4: "It's gonna have boobs. Wait, I can't do that. Goddammit."
  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: In "Shell Shocked", Bowser loses his shell, which is represented by his body being retextured to replace the shell with his yellow skin. However, as it was impossible to remove the spikes from his model altogether, they were instead retextured into ice cream cones and Hand Waved as Bowser gluing them on to make himself look scarier.
  • Series Hiatus:
    • Starting in 2019, the series takes a break for the first couple of weeks of the New Year.
    • August 2019 had Luke and Kevin taking a week-long break from the series (and Meta Runner) for the sake of their mental health.
    • The third Saturday of October 2019 had a Meta Runner Crossover with TheOdd1sOut and Egoraptor of Game Grumps instead of the normally scheduled video.
    • The first Saturday of May 2021 was skipped due to SMG4 working on the Milestone Celebration 10th anniversary video.
    • In-between the penultimate episode of the Revelations Arc & its titular movie, the Mario Does Things episode "Mario Reacts to Nintendo Memes 4" was released instead of a normal video so they could work more on the movie.
  • Similarly Named Works:
  • Spoiled by the Merchandise: A day before the movie was released, a preorder for the Lil' Chonks was shown on the SMG4 merch site, all but spoiling that X and FM would be appearing in the movie.
    • The marketing for "War of the Fat Italians 2022" pretty much spoiled that SMG4 was getting a new look. It's downplayed here, though, as past marketing has changed the looks of SMG4 and SMG3 for legal reasons.
  • Trolling Creator: A day after the reveal of Niles' true nature, Luke twisted the knife by posting a gif of him dancing with the caption "cry about it".
    • Folowing the release of "[NINTENDO HAS CLAIMED THIS VIDEO]" (in which a DMCA kills off every non-Nintendo character), Luke posted a picture of Lawyer Kong flashing at peace sign at SMG4's grave.
  • Uncredited Role: Many regular characters in the series, if they're not a Synthetic Voice Actor (like Bob, Chris, and Swag) or use voice clips (like the classic Nintendo cast, Saiko, and sometimes Melony), are voiced by members of the Glitch staff. Very rarely do they credit themselves for their voice work, only their production roles. Examples…
    • Series creator Luke Lerdwichagul voices the titular SMG4 – although he didn't start doing so until around 2018 – along with Shroomy, JubJub, and Wheeler.
    • Head writer and Luke's older brother Kevin voices Fishy Boopkins, Kermit the Frog, and Axol.
    • Editor James Bailey voices SMG3 since 2020 and Aziz Yousi (a Canon Immigrant from Sunset Paradise)
    • Editor Paul Stylianou voices SMG1 plus numerous incidental characters.
    • Sometimes even credited actors get hit with this. Elsie Lovelock, voice of Meggy since 2022, was not credited for voicing the little Inkling Girl at the end of WESTERN SPAGETTI. Robyn Barry-Cotter, voice of SMG2, was not credited for Spudnik (she was not credited in that episode, "The Other Universe", at all for some reason).
  • Word of Gay: While looking at Luigi's wiki page, Luke and Kevin confirmed that Luigi is bisexual, explaining why he has shown attraction for men and Daisy. During the 2020 AMA, Luke flat-out said Luigi is gay.
  • Word of God:
    • An AMA statement in 2020 had Luke confirm why Meggy was made human; They wanted to move on from Splatoon content and make Meggy unique in her own way.
    • At the end of Meggy's Destiny, Luke himself confirmed that Desti would never come back. Despite this, she has made cameos here and there, usually in flashbacks.
    • In the SMG4 QnA 2020 video, Luke revealed Bob's surname: Bobowski. While looking at Bob's wiki page for a Hobo Bros video, he said he'd forgotten that, said it was stupid, but then decided to roll with it anyway. His full name appears on Melony's cellphone during IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT.
      • In the same Q&A video, Kevin stated that the Hobo Theatre videos are non-canon.
    • In the opening advertisement for "Mario has a BBQ, but he's not invited", Luke stated that despite the Genesis Arc being over, there's still more to the story.
      • In the same video, Luke also said that he'll be experimenting with videos, such as more "Mario Plays" and more "Meet the Cast" episodes.
    • In response to a fan question about Meggy's apparent Plot Armor, Luke explained that "we (GLITCH) could kill off Meggy if we wanted to". This actually gets explored in "WHAT IF..?", where Meggy is killed by the false Sephiroth in a scenario where Desti lives.
    • In an interview with Inverse, Luke reveals the one line he'll never cross: placing third-party characters in any hateful or defamatory context. The team's aware that they're using Nintendo IP and while Nintendo hasn't said anything on the matter, they're careful not to put their characters in any hateful or defamatory context just in case, stating that they respect and enjoy Nintendo's content. This, incidentally, is the very same line SuperMarioLogan crossed that resulted in him getting a cease-and-desist from Nintendo of America.
  • Word of Saint Paul:
    • Prinplup14, better known as Enzo, has stated that the reason SMG4 doesn't use the YouTube Rangers anymore is because he wanted to make his own story rather than using YouTubers, which is why they haven't appeared much since 2015. Enzo has stated that he is fine with this and asks that fans stop bothering Luke about it.
    • Not long after the release of WOTFI 2020, James Bailey confirmed that SMG3 would still appear in videos, meaning Luke's stating that he was Killed Off for Real by Ugandan Knuckles at the end of the video was just a joke, something that would be fully confirmed at the end of that year's Halloween Episode.
    • FightingMario54321 often makes tweets to deconfirm several controversial theories.
    • During a Deltarune Twitch Stream following the release of WOTFI 2021, James Bailey said that "Zero is not done yet", hinting of a comeback that would become the Revelations arc.
  • Writer Conflicts with Canon: A minor example. Kevin stated in their reaction to Meggy's wiki page that Meggy shouldn't swear. There have been instances, both before and after this statement, where she has uttered curse words.
    • In several Hobo Bros React videos, especially where Luke and Kevin read the wiki on their own characters, they freely admitted, due to their creative style noted below, they contradict their own canon so often that even they're not always certain what's canon or not. They also said not to take stuff said during that video or their other reactions seriously as lore or canon.
  • Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: By SMG4's own admission in 2020, the writing process for the episodes boils down to him and Kevin taking walks and spouting out ideas until they decide which one they should go with. In the Hobo Bros reaction to WOTFI 2014, he admitted that this also applied back when he was on his own, with him planning out a skit and then deciding on the fly what would happen next as he went about making it.
