Main Characters

    Gillion Tidestrider

Player: Slimecicle

Race: Triton
Class: Paladin (Oath of the Undersea) / Sorcerer (Divine Soul)
Alignment: Lawful Good
Background: Folk Hero

A paladin, walking (and occasionally swimming) around the earth, Gillion has a never-ending list of titles that he has given himself.

"You see, as the light flickers over me, you see this blue-green man, a Triton, with this luscious, sort of shoulder-length green hair that gets lighter as it goes down. And it’s almost wavy, as if he’s underwater. His ears have this fin-like appearance, they’re protruded and spiked back. And he has these piercing, ocean-blue eyes. He has these lighter, wavy marks as well, that are slightly present on the sides of his face and wrap around his limbs. His most defining feature here as well is this glowing coral growing up, out and from under his hair slightly up and it looks almost crown-like. My character’s name is Gillion Tidestrider."
Slimecicle, describing Gillion at the start of episode 1.
  • Blood Knight: Downplayed. While fighting isn't all that he lives for, he finds great enjoyment in fighting the forces of evil, or at least whatever he determines to be. In battle, he regularly taunts and goads enemies and enjoys the pain from battle.
  • Combat Medic: Downplayed. He can heal minor wounds and cure poison. Additionally, just being near him makes it more difficult to be affected by magical abilities. (In game terms, he grants a +4 to all saving throws while within a 10-foot radius of him.)
  • The Chosen One: With his divine powers, he believes himself to be the chosen one. He very well might be, due to the prophecy he is supposed to fulfil having its first steps completed. Notably shown under the sub-tropes of It Sucks to Be the Chosen One and Multiple-Choice Chosen, and to a lesser extent, Apocalypse Maiden and Hijacked Destiny.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Despite Gillion’s complete obliviousness to life on land, he is a formidable warrior.
  • Death or Glory Attack: His most powerful attack, called "Prophetic Screwup", allows him to either do massive damage or fail horribly.
  • Detect Evil: He has the ability to sniff out evil, described as picking up scents of people's morality.
  • Ear Fins: He has fins instead of ears, as is normal for his species.
  • Fish out of Water: Taken literally. A major part of the character, he knows little to nothing about the world above the waves.
  • Fish People: Tritons are elves, evolved to live underwater.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: In the scenario in which he has gotten to this state, his enemies had best run. This is also associated with his divine powers, mainly his "Prophetic Screwup" ability.
  • Good Is Not Soft: If he determines you to be evil, you will end up dead sooner or later.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: He can channel his divine abilities through his weapons.
  • Honor Before Reason: One of the most notable qualities of Gillion’s character. His strong moral code often conflicts with a life of piracy.
  • Little Bit Beastly: He has ear fins, coral growing from under his hair, and blue skin.
  • Overly Long Name: He is continually giving himself titles.
  • Pirate Parrot: Parodied. He has Pretzel, a frogtopus in a jar at his waist.
  • The Paladin: His class, with the literal origin of the trope name being so. He swore an oath to an unnamed power, which he can channel the divine abilities of.
  • Personal Horror: While imprisoned by the Donjon card, Gillion faces the truth and impact of his actions on the world, and how he has hurt others. This triggers his speech to the elders that causes major character development.
  • Supernatural Floating Hair: When he uses many of his divine powers, his hair starts to stand up.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: Gillion has a never-ending list of titles that he has given himself. As of episode 61, his full title is "Gillion Tidestrider, Champion of the Undersea, Hero of the Deep, The One, Singer/Songwriter of Gillion and the Tidestriders hit single "Hole in Your Heart", Pigeon Lord, Moisture Master, Horse Tamer, Defenestrator of the Adulterous, Friend of Dugan, Walking Fish, Fish, Dirt Eater, Chum of Chibo and Chums, Co-Captain of the Riptide Pirates, Co-captain of the Albatross, Companion of Pretzel, Paramount Champion, Knighter of Julian That One Time, Serpent Rider, Friend of Duke D Dukem Duke of Duke, Eater of Grass, Beater of Ass, Capitalism Hater, Royalty Assassinator, Sufferer of the Spice, Weed Eater, Slayer of Evil, Loffinlot Liberator, Fruitninja, Eater of Sand, Co-Captain Gil of the Riptide Pirates, Juice Enjoyer."
  • Your Worst Memory: While imprisoned by the Donjon card, Gillion sees shadows of the elders of the Undersea and must live through his worst memories from the past and make different choices in a trial to see if he is a traitor.

    Jay Ferin

Player: Condifiction

Race: Human
Class: Ranger (Hunter) / Artificer (Artillerist)
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Background: Soldier

The daughter of a Navy family, Jay decided to give up her power as an officer to join Chip on his crew.

"As the light illuminates her face, you see a girl with long orangish-red hair and blue eyes, her hair is tied up in a ponytail in the back but still some of her hair is kinda coming down around her shoulders. She’s wearing a high-cut, navy-blue jacket and a white undershirt underneath it. In her hair is a pin that displays an eagle freely flying through an orange and blue sky. Going down, she’s wearing manilla-colored cotton pants that are laced down the sides and around her waist is a belt pouch. (Well it’s like a belt pouch but it’s like her belt splits into two to kinda like attach) — so it’s like three belts? — yeah — this character sucks I don’t like belts — five, let’s say five — FIVE? — let’s say five, let’s say five — FIVE BELTS ITS A BELT BANDANNA SHE’S GOT A BELTDANNA — She’s got suspenders on she’s got suspenders — they’re belts — they’re belts — so she has the suspenders and then another belt? How, how much trouble does this woman have keeping her pants up holy shit… — I don’t know, she just does. The pants are way too big for her waist so it's like a uh what is it like a rainsuit or whatever, where it’s just uh, fuck, the covering or whatever. There’s like two belts and then there’s a belt that goes across the waist, belts on the legs… anyways."
Condifiction, describing Jay at the beginning of episode 1.

  • Anxiety Dreams: Jay has night terrors, which seem to precede extremely significant events.
  • Becoming the Mask: Jay originally joined the pirates as an undercover Navy spy, but began to genuinely enjoy being a pirate, sometime undergoing a Heel–Face Turn. This is likely due to the recent streak of kindness from the crew, and to a lesser extent, a Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal due to her father.
  • But Not Too Bi: Jay is confirmed to be bisexual, but throughout the campaign has only been seen to be romantically interested in women.
  • Clown School: It was said that Jay went to a clown school, as did most of her family members.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Jay came from a Navy family, which is known for being an oppressive force throughout the world. Her father was revealed to be abusive and commanding, even more so
  • The Engineer: She found a rare book about engineering, and has since multiclassed into Artificer, giving her the ability to create mechanical and magical items.
  • Only Sane Man: Jay plays this role in the crew’s dynamic, however does commonly join in on the crew’s wild ideas.
  • Pirate Girl: Jay is the only girl on the crew of a pirate ship.
  • Forest Ranger: One of her classes is Ranger. She can track people flawlessly, and is most at home in the wild.
  • The Smart Guy: Jay is the only intelligent character, but she tends to go along with the inane plans that her teammates come up with.
  • Too Many Belts: Jay has many, many belts. According to Condi's description of her in Episode 1, she has at least 9 belts.
  • Traitor Shot: In episode 52, Jay is supposed to reveal a secret about herself. She refuses to do so despite the pressuring of her teammates. She also writes a letter on Joaldo, presumably to the Navy.
  • Welcome Back, Traitor: Employed by the Riptide Pirates after Jay Ferin is revealed to have been working for the Navy all along. However, Jay decides that she wants to keep adventuring with the Riptide Pirates, and is given another chance.

    Chip

Player: Bizly

Race: Human
Class: Rogue (Swashbuckler)
Alignment: Unknown
Background: Haunted One

"You see in the center, more chiseled features, but a younger man, around 19. He’s got brown hair that parts down the middle, some dirt on his face, and I’ll describe the shoulders, he’s got a white, puffy shirt that looks fancy but it also looks worn, for sure. It’s definitely been on him for a few months, at least, it’s pretty dirty. He’s got some suspenders going up over his shoulders and these brown eyes that glisten with the flame. And my character’s name… is Chip."
Bizly, describing Chip at the beginning of episode 1.

  • Accidental Marriage: At the conclusion of the Loffinlot arc, he wakes up to discover that he got married due to Alcohol-Induced Idiocy, and subsequently had it annulled and didn't have any contact with his wife for over forty episodes until she sends him a letter in episode 56.
  • Ambiguously Bi: It has been hinted many times that he likes multiple genders, but it has never been explicitly confirmed. His player, Bizly, stated on Twitter that he doesn’t wish to confirm facts like those for his characters as he prefers people to imagine their own headcanonical identities for him instead.
  • Avengers Assemble: Chip originally set out to hopefully recruit anybody willing to assist him in finding Arlin James, Chip’s father figure.
  • Badass Normal: Chip had been the only one out of the three captains incapable of using magic. Chip can now use magic as of episode 77.
  • Blade on a Rope: He has two swords that were connected by a chain at one point.
  • Close-Call Haircut: At one point, Chip has his head accidentally shaved.
  • Dual Wielding: He uses two swords in combat.
  • Facial Horror: After the Loffinlot arc, he gains a large scar on his face.
  • Heroic Bastard: In addition to being a literal bastard, Chip is often called one by his crew and everyone else.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In episode 82, he performs a ritual in the middle of a harsh storm to free Gillion from the Donjon card (the Luxbris Pearl) and allows himself to be struck by lightning repeatedly in order to free him. He very nearly dies in the process, and it is only through Gillion’s healing that he survives the event. Also done in episode 67, in which Chip sacrifices his wish to be free of his nightmares to revive all of those killed at Grimm’s party.
  • Honor Among Thieves: Chip talks often about the "Pirate Code". It is not yet known if he truly knows any of this code, as he claims that it has laws such as 'don't pee your pants'.
  • Hook Hand: Parodied. He has his pinky finger cut off (by Gillion) and has it replaced with a magical prosthetic. It doesn't give him any special powers.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Downplayed. When Chip wants to, his words can cut deeper than his twin swords. He truly does care about his friends, however, and protects them at all costs.
  • Lovable Rogue: Chip has no predispositions against committing serious crimes, but he straight-up refuses to do so if the target is poor or in some other sympathetic situation.
  • Master of Disguise: He is one, but the only times he's ever used it are to disguise his crewmates as grandmothers.
  • Only One Name: His name is Chip.
  • Stealth Clothes: He has a bandana that allows him to cast the spell disguise self, making him look like someone else until he takes it off.
  • Real Men Love Jesus: Chip often claims that he believes in a “One True God”, which is often Played for Laughs.
  • Sticky Fingers: Lampshaded. He has difficulty leaving anything of value out of his grasp.
  • Swashbuckler: His subclass and his role.
  • The Trickster: Chip often plays tricks, lying about the most insignificant of things and making people fall off mountains as a joke.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Most notably done by Chip, until losing his memory of killing the unnamed man, which had founded his distaste for it.

Guest Characters

    Clorten

Player:Ranboo

  • Bag of Holding: He has a briefcase that functions as one of these. It turns out that he has an apparently limitless amount of these briefcases inside each other, and he uses them as weapons.
  • Briefcase Full of Money: His Briefcase of Holding is used to store the money that he earned in the Blue Royale Casino, as well as storing his other briefcases.
  • Dragon Ancestry: Clorten is a Dragonborn, descending from at least one dragon.

  • Real Men Wear Pink: He wears a pink tuxedo suit, and is exceptionally masculine.
  • Trapped by Gambling Debts: Taken literally. He was introduced in the Casino Episode, where time is near-frozen and he is trapped until the Riptide pirates free him.
  • Improbable Weapon User: He uses briefcases to throw at his enemies, taking the place of the most bizarre weapon when most other characters use blades. He has access to a pocket dimension inside of his briefcases, which is filled with more pocket dimensions, themselves filled with briefcases.
  • Parent Never Came Back from the Store: Played for Laughs, Inverted. His backstory is that he left to go to the store to get groceries for his family, and got caught in the magic of the Blue Royale Casino, not coming back to his family until after he was freed.

    La Alma

Player:Pokay

Race: Tabaxi

  • Blackmail Backfire: His captor, named The Barron, poisoned the previous champion of the gladiatorial ring that he ran, subsequently making La Alma the next in line, and threatened to frame him for the murder if he ever left or failed. Eventually, the crew convince him to simply not care anymore, and they reveal The Barron for what he is.
  • Cat Folk: La Alma is a Tabaxi, a race of anthropomorphic cats.
  • Cool Mask: He wears a luchador mask at almost all times, which is white with purple around an open mouth and in the eyes.
  • Gladiator Revolt: He rebels against his captor, and with the assistance of the crew, they all convince the audience to trample and assumedly kill the captor.
  • Grapple Move: His moveset revolves around grappling his enemies, with him having different names for every one of his signature attacks.
  • Spell My Name with a "The": He is always referred to as La Alma, with the Spanish article La (which literally translates to The) at the beginning of his name.

    Goobleck

Player: Slimecicle

Race: Plasmoid
Class: Monk (Way of the Living Weapon)

  • Beware the Silly Ones: He’s a tiny goo blob with a goofy high-pitched voice and manner, but make no mistake, he is more powerful and much, much faster than anyone would expect.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: When prompted to battle, he can summon elemental energy, attack many times in the span of a second, and leap and run to extraordinary heights.
  • Token Non-Human: Due to him joining the party temporarily in Gillion’s absence, he is a blob of goo in a party with two humans.

Non-Player Characters

    Old Man Earl

Earl is an exceptionally short Halfling who joined the crew after they came to the island city of Loffinlot. They freed him from the laughing curse of the city, and he subsequently is following them on their adventures. He stays on the ship at all times, and makes magical juice out of fruits that the crew brings him.

  • Angry Chef: Yelling at his crewmates, creating juice, and being old are the three ways that Earl fills his niche in the crew.
  • Grandma's Recipe: His recipes for food are quite literally magical. It is not known how they are so, as he hasn't shown any magical prowess. It can only be assumed that it is some form of innate magic that is focused on his feet.
  • Grumpy Old Man: He perfectly fits this, almost always complaining about how things were better in his day.
  • One-Note Cook: He only makes juice.
  • Power-Up Food: The juice that he makes gives some form of magical power, from healing grievous wounds to letting the drinker breathe underwater.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: Earl swears constantly.
  • Secret Ingredient: His feet, which he uses to mash the other ingredients into juice.

    Ollie

Oliver, also known as Ollie, is a 12 year old half-elf boy who lives on the Albatross. He was picked up by Marshall John and has since become a member of the crew.

  • Disappeared Dad: Ollie's mom is mentioned, but his dad is never brought up.
  • Don't Tell Mama: Played With. He wants to be a part of the crew and help, but is conflicted about whether to tell his mother about what he does.
  • Rapid Aging: Ollie uses Niklaus Hendrix’s compass and the cursed item, twisting his desire to be older so that he could go on adventures with the crew, aged him rapidly to about 17 or 18 years old. He grew to the height of 6'4" (previously 5'4"). He ended up lanky and with stretch marks on the side of his skin because he grew too fast and with a bit of stubble on the chin, longer hair and a more defined face. He returns to his previous appearance in Episode 56, due to Chip’s deal with Niklaus restoring him to his previous form.
  • Super-Strong Child: With the Belt of Giant Strength, Ollie has strength far beyond even adventurers such as Gillion.

    Lizzie

Elizabeth Lafayette, or Lizzie for short, is the human captain of the Grandberry Pirates, formerly of the Black Rose Pirates.

  • Action Girl: She is the celebrated captain of a pirate ship, and isn't afraid to attack anyone who implies she isn't worthy.
  • Butch Lesbian: It has been explicitly confirmed that Lizzie likes women (though whether she is lesbian or bisexual is still unclear), and other than her clothes (which are feminine taken to another level) she is very much butch, being the most physically powerful character (without magical enhancement) in the series. In addition to this, she is 5'6".
  • Combat Pragmatist: She has shown herself to be willing to resort to dirty tactics.
  • Dressed to Plunder: An excessive amount of jewelry, bandanas, a tricorn pirate hat, a diamond-encrusted longcoat with an inverted color scheme of her hat, a corset over an undercut ruffled blouse. Shiver me timbers.
  • Drunken Boxing: She challenges Chip to a literal cage battle while extremely drunk.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Eyepatch? Check. Pirate? Check. Skilled melee combatant? Check.
  • Flash Step: Downplayed. She is capable of Legendary Actions, which are D&D's version of an interrupt attack, taken at the end of another person's turn in combat, allowing her to react faster than the eye can see.
  • Pirate Girl: She's the only girl on her ship, mirroring Jay.
  • Sword and Gun: Her weapons of choice.

Antagonists - Spoilers are unmarked. Open these at your own risk.

    Niklaus Hendrix

Niklaus is a handsome, towering Tiefling, who grants wishes to those who need them. In return, he demands that they give him their service at some undetermined point in the future.

  • Deal with the Devil: He grants people wishes and powers beyond their wildest dreams, all for the small price of servitude at some yet to be determined point in the future.
    • The first known example of this is when the mayor of Loffinlot wanted to make everyone in his town happy, causing Niklaus to take his daughter and twist his words so that the entire town could not stop laughing.
    • Gillion made a deal with him to annul this deal, at the cost of having a magical tattoo and being in Niklaus's service at one undefined point in the future.
    • He made a deal with Empress Malice, giving her fame and musical talent, with the cost being that her music turned the listeners to stone.
    • The Boss Blossom made a deal with him, giving him money and power, with it eventually consuming him.
    • The most recent deal that he made was in Episode 81, with Jay, giving her information about how to free Gillion from the prison of the Donjon card in the Deck of Many Things. In exchange, he told her that when she heard a name and a command, she had to follow the order.
    • There are many other implied deals that he has made, but they are as of yet unconfirmed.
  • Dream Land: He has a pocket dimension that Chip accidentally accesses through a dream.
  • Impossibly Cool Clothes: His clothes are the very definition of extravagant.
  • In-Series Nickname: He has taken the title of 'Wish Doctor', but he has been given nicknames such as 'Daddy Desire' and 'Papa Possibility'.

    Jayson Ferin

Jayson Ferin is the father of Jay Ferin and an extremely respected, powerful navy vice admiral. He is a very stoic and well-conducted vice-admiral of the Navy. He is also cold, angry, and terrifying to those beneath him. He looks down on pirates as nothing more than scum and would hurt or maim his own family members to "discipline" them if they chose the pirate life.

  • Archnemesis Dad: He does not hesitate to attack his daughter and her friends for abandoning the navy to become a pirate.
  • The Juggernaut: When the Riptide Pirates faced him, he was way above their league. They could not defeat him and were forced to retreat.
  • The Stoic: Jayson is cold and infallible, and very rarely shows emotion.
  • Wreathed in Flames: In battle, his hair ignites like a torch, skin becoming golden and swirled along with his suit as fire burns over his limbs.
  • Tranquil Fury: He is stoic but aggressive and angry.
