Dual Destiny Characters

     Atanu Duern

Atanu Duern

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_atanu.jpg
He faces his biggest challenge yet ... and the risks could not be greater.

Beware; this Character Folder is full of unmarked spoilers!

A new twist in Laeka'Draeon's tale. After crossing paths with the wily, sadistic Kushal, Laeka'Draeon is bound under a powerful metamorphosis curse that traps him in hemlan form. Still affable and courageous—though with significantly less power—he works to adjust to his new body in order to infiltrate the hemlan city of Shoumeign and rescue Norf, who has been captured by Trappers.

  • Attractive Bent Species: It’s implied that he is quite nice-looking in this form (particularly his facial features)—judging by both Ubi’s and Shifra’s reactions (the former with pleasant surprise, the latter with discomfort).
  • Being Human Sucks: Laeka’Draeon is distressed by his altered body, finding it significantly weaker and colder than his normal form. His mindset doesn’t shift much, even after the form becomes Voluntary Shapeshifting and his companions consider the ability potentially useful.
  • Brought Down to Normal: He loses all his dragonic abilities when in hemlan form. Although, after significant training, he is able to use Kutokii, as well as a defensive Flame (white in colour) that appears to be triggered when he is in mortal danger. He is restored to his dragon form after the Shoumeign Arc.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has golden hair and golden eyes.
  • De-power: Remains in hemlan form permanently, after sacrificing his dragonic manna to revive Shifra. It should be noted that if he didn't have the separate manna of the imprinted metamorphosis ability, he would have died in Shifra's place; so Kushal's curse really ended up being a blessing in the long run.
  • Forced Transformation: Laeka’Draeon is forced into this form by Kushal—who binds him with a powerful metamorphosis curse.
  • Heroic B So D: After his initial transformation, he becomes so distraught he passes out.
  • Human Disguise: Hemlans are the equivalent of humans in the Dragon Calling universe.
  • Humanity Ensues: Laeka’Draeon is horrified by his forced transformation, and begs Kushal to change him back (to no avail).
  • I'm Cold... So Cold...: He experiences this to great levels of frustration and dismay, although the symptom is not due to mortal injury or illness, but rather being trapped in a cursed body.
  • Meaningful Rename: Atanu, meaning ‘Unshapen’, suitable in the case of Laeka’Draeon, who spends the majority of the series seeking after his lost identity and calling.
  • Pretty Boy: Is described as being quite attractive—and is illustrated accordingly.
  • Skyward Scream: He does this after Kushal leaves him alone in the forest, trapped in his cursed body.
  • Technically Naked Shapeshifter: The clothing he wears after Yarad forces him into his hemlan form (in the Deep Ways) are actually a part of his manna.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: The dual-shift into hemlan form becomes a new (and life-saving) ability Laeka’Draeon takes advantage of during his quest.

     Kushal

Kushal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_kushal.jpg
Is willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants.
A resident of the Forest of Howling and one of the Masters of Magic of the pixie-cat clans. Kushal is clever, manipulative and very interested in what assistance he can glean from a young, lost dragon stumbling through his territory.

Kushal is also considered an antagonist (to begin with) and so can be found over on the Antagonists and Villains page.

  • A Lighter Shade of Grey: Kushal's actions are morally questionable, and his behaviour pushes him into the Sadist spectrum, he ultimately has a decent sense of morality and his objectives are noble (rescuing Maita and Ika, as well as helping Laeka'Draeon have a decent chance at rescuing Norf, too).

  • Casting a Shadow: Kushal is a powerful pixie-cat mage, and is able to travel at Super-Speed by moving through shadows.
  • Cats Are Magic: All pixie-cats are magical creatures, but Kushal is of an exceptional calibre; being a Master of Magic, he is one of the most powerful pixie-cats in his clan.
  • Cats Are Snarkers: Kushal is quite contemptuous and enjoys irritating others with his deliberately flippant and snarky replies and statements.
  • Cats Are Superior: As far as Kushal is concerned. Seen plainly in the way he treats other creatures, especially Laeka'Draeon, whom (as a dragon) most other creature-kinds treat with admiration and respect.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Kushal implements this expression often, and seems to relish the unsettled reactions he receives.

  • Good is Not Nice: Kushal is perverse and manipulative (a common trait in pixie-cats, but seemingly more pronounced in him).

  • I Did What I Had to Do: Kushal places Laeka'Draeon under a metamorphosis curse that turns him into a hemlan, knowing that it is the young dragon's best shot of entering Shoumeign without becoming a target (and subsequently his best chance at rescuing Maita, Ika, and Norf).

  • Meaningful Name: Kushal means "Skillful and Clever" and alludes to his prodigious talent and personality.

  • Power of Love: It's Kushal affection for Maita that drives him to "bend" the laws of his kind, by involving outsiders to rescue her (and Ika) on his behalf.

  • Questionable Consent: While Laeka'Draeon willingly and readily agrees to take on Kushal's request to rescue Maita and Ika (and Norf), Kushal's deliberate and devious use of words allows him to curse the young dragon without "technically" going against his will.
Laeka'Draeon: Help me find my other friends, then show me the way, and I will rescue your kin along with my friend. That is what you want, isn't it? That is why you followed me, to ask for my help?
Kushal: So, you are willing to do anything for the chance to rescue your friend—that is what you are truly saying, yes?
Laeka'Draeon: Yes. Why are you repeating what I've already said. We are wasting time!
Kushal: Then I have you by your word of it.

  • Sadist: Kushal appears to find some level of enjoyment/ amusement in his torment of others (but not to an extreme extent).
  • Scary Teeth: All pixie-cats have sharp, pointed teeth, but Kushal's is made all the more menacing due to his Cheshire Cat Grin.

  • This Is Unforgivable!: Kushal is vehemently opposed to General Wrathmere's proposal to use Project Atonement against the armies of Beruun Terrolagn, so much so, he follows Yarad and Aena into battle, in order to try and free the enslaved creatures. Once he temporarily breaks the Mind Control hexes, he likely encourages them to exact their revenge on Wrathmere .
  • The Trickster: Kushal deliberately manipulates others to suit his needs, and is very clever with his words.

  • Weak, but Skilled: As a pixie-cat, Kushal is physiologically slight and slender, however, he's extremely agile, cunning and proficient at casting magic.

  • You Monster!: Ubi does not use those exact words, but her outcry (over Kushal cursing Laeka'Draeon) means pretty much the same thing.
Ubi: Wicked! What a horrible trick to inflict on another creature. Those pixie-cats are so utterly wicked!

     Maita

Maita

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_maita.jpg
Such a pretty, friendly cat. How troublesome could she really be ...?
An intrinsically sweet-natured and forgiving pixie-cat, paired with a playfully mischievous side. Maita's pleasant disposition and easy company has made her well-favoured and highly sought after among her fellow cats, and being of a mildly vain inclination, she cheerfully bathes in the spotlight bestowed on her. She is the leader of her circle of friends—being the initiator of the prank against Laeka'Draeon and company (in which she steals Norf's music pipe).

  • Cats Are Magic: She is a pixie-cat, and shown to be a proficient summoner of Elemental Magic.
  • Cute Kitten: Maita is a very pretty feline (sleek white fur and light purple eyes), and certainly uses her good looks to her advantage.

  • Damsel in Distress: Maita gets caught in aTrapper's cage—alongside Norf and Ika—and subsequently imprisoned in the underground chambers of Shoumeign. This event is the catalyst for Kushal wrangling Laeka'Draeon and companions into a daring rescue mission.

  • Eye Scream: Maita leaps onto Sorrel Wrathmere's face, claws bared in a vicious attack, scratching him in the eyes.

  • Living MacGuffin: Maita's capture provokes Kushal to take action, subsequently pulling Laeka'Draeon and his companions into the rescue mission.

  • Running on All Fours: Does this—alongside her miscreant companions—to get away from Norf, after she steals his music pipe.
  • Shock and Awe: Maita's summoned magical attacks are described as "jagged pellets", implying the energy is a form of lightning.

  • The Trickster: Maita and her friends put on a friendly and innocent front for Laeka'Draeon and his companions, all for the purpose of distracting them—which enables Maita to steal Norf's magical music pipe.

     Ika

Ika

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_ika.jpg
Clever but timid and perhaps a little too eager to please.
An adolescent, impressionable pixie-cat who is eager to join the antics of her older sister and companions. Her encounter with Laeka'Draeon's company will teach her some hard (but valuable) lessons.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Being reunited with her big sister is a brief but touching moment (considering everything Ika's been through).
  • Break the Cutie: The ordeals of being captured and imprisoned really take their toll on poor little Ika. She's even unfortunate as to end up with a broken leg (from falling wall debris).
  • Cute Kitten: She is the younger sister to Gemin, with a sweet and timid disposition to match.

  • Running on All Fours: Does this to get away from Norf, after Maita steals his music pipe.
  • The Woobie: Poor little Ika is just a kitten (compared to the other pixie-cats) and is extremely terrified when she is captured and imprisoned (believing she and Maita will never be rescued—as per pixie-cat custom). Then, during the escape efforts, she gets a leg broken by a piece of debris from the wall smashed by Mothuurdresh.

     Madam Lume

Madam Lume

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_lume.jpg
A fearless old hermit who takes both strange and dangerous encounters in her stride.

A prudent, no-nonsense, nerves-of-steel hermit who becomes embroiled in Laeka’Draeon’s quest when she is led (by Fargo) to the location where he fell unconscious— after being turned into a hemlan by Kushal. After reuniting with his friends and sharing his plight with the old hemlan, Lume agrees to train him to effectively use his altered body, and also aid him in his quest to rescue his friend, Norf, and the abducted pixie-cats Maita, and Ika.

  • Circus Brat: She grew up in a travelling troupe and it's implied she had a rather adventurous life.
  • Cool Old Lady: Madam Lume may be a grouchy old hermit, but she’s also tireless, fearless and willing to help Laeka’Draeon and his companions, even before she knows much of anything about them. She also lives alone, in a forest full of tricksy magics and tricksy creatures, and isn’t fazed at all.
  • The Hermit: Lives on her own in a cottage in the middle of the Forest of Howling.
  • In the Back: When Ghinzel’s Poether Flames die, the harpies swarm Madam Lume’s wagon. Despite the companions’ efforts to keep them at bay, one harpy manages to get to Madam Lume, and savagely tears into her back with its noxious claws.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Lume’s stocky brown mare, Nanmuir.
  • Mentor Archetype: She becomes Laeka’Draeon’s instructor in teaching him how to adapt to his hemlan form and behave like a hemlan.
  • Nerves of Steel: She lives alone in a forest full of dangerous magic and seems to easily hold her own. She also keeps calm and focused during the harpy attack on Shoumeign. Even as a child, she was not afraid of the strange and the magical, as evidenced in her interactions with a recently cursed, still-wild and unpredictable Yarad.
  • Old Maid: Implied at first, seeing as she lives alone in the middle of a forest, but subverted with the fact that she has adolescent boys clothing available for Laeka’Draeon to wear (when in his hemlan form). This implies she has (or had) at least one child; considering her age, they would be full-grown with families of their own.
  • Protective Charm: She believes the feather she wears around her neck has magical, defensive properties. she believes correctly; it is a manorphis feather, conjured from Yarad’s own manna, which he bequeathed to her when she was a child.
  • Stern Teacher: Madam Lume shows little leniency to Laeka’Draeon while she helps him to adjust to his hemlan form, although she’s not above giving mild praise where it’s due.

     Aubrianna Mauveer

Aubrianna Mauveer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_aubrianna.jpg
She is willing to go to great lengths and sacrifices for the sake of her kingdom and kin.

Head of one of the oldest and respected morwulf Clans, and Seksai (Keeper of Secrets) to the Royal Court of K'tailiur. Aubrianna shoulders enormous responsibility, not only within her Clan, but also to the pact of servitude between Clan Mauveer and Clan Inshurima, as well as her assigned duties to the Royal Court. After having a vision of the siege on Dae, she rallies a select few who believe her premonitions (including the two youngest heirs of the Aunuen), retrieves the Troth of Penitence (aka Aunuen) from the Royal Vaults and flees the city, just as the enemy bears down upon it and seals it within a powerful barrier.

  • The Cassandra: Aurbianna is gifted with seer-like abilities and dreams that are implied to be accurate and trusted. Although when she tries to forewarn the royal court of the impending attack on Dae, her warnings are dismissed. It is not explained why although can be hypothesised as the morwulves believing it impossible for any enemy to breach their most highly defensible and defended city.
  • The Chooser of the One: Aided by insight provided by Celetheal, Aubrianna chooses both the new Keiegn of the Age, and the Heir of the Aunuen.
  • The Fettered: Aubrianna would qualify; she refused to reveal to Vagel the secrets of the Aunuen, even as he was torturing and killing her companions in an effort to force her hand.
  • Forced to Watch: Vagel has her in chains, with her head strapped in a metal clamp, forcing her to watch as he viciously tortures her comrades.
  • Government in Exile: When the rest of the court ignores her dire premonitions, she takes matters into her own hands and practically self-exiles in order to escape (with the Aunuen and select few followers) the enemy's siege and seek help from allies.
  • Legacy of Service: Aurbianna is of the Mauveer Clan, which has a long history of serving the Inshurima Clan—not in a master/ servant tier, but more of a deep allegiance founded on oaths and forged bonds.
  • Like A Daughter To Me: It is revealed later in the series that she is Shifra’s mentor, and became a kind of ‘mother figure’ after Shifra’s mother was snatched by a Rogue dragon.
  • MacGuffin-Person Reveal: Aubrianna is the catalyst that establishes Laeka’Draeon as the Keiegn, and Shifra as the Heir of Aunuen (the Keiegn being sought after since the beginning of the series, and the Heir, mid-way through).
  • Plot-Powered Stamina: Aubrianna maintains continuous cloaking/ protective spells over the wagons that escaped the siege of Dae for days before finally needing to rest.
  • Protectorate: Aubrianna does everything in her power to protect Prince Korin, going as far as magically cloaking him from being detected by Vagel, until she becomes too weak to maintain the spell. When faced with the choice of divulging the secrets of the Aunuen, or watch Korin be tortured to death, she chooses the latter, even though it practically breaks her.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Was believed to have died (along with the rest of the fugitives from Dae) by Shifra. When she learns this is not the case, she is over-joyed.
  • Secret-Keeper: Aubrianna (and the rest of the Mauveer Clan) inherited the secrets of the heritage of Keisha Inshurima, waiting for the time when passing on its truths to its bloodline heirs is required. Aubrianna is also K’tailiur’s Seksai: a type of chronicler and protector of histories and secrets.
  • Seer: She has a rare gift of obtaining visions through dreams; aptly called Seer Dreams.
  • Undying Loyalty: To her kingdom and the Inshurima Clan.
  • You Monster!: Aubrianna calls Volten Vagel this, during his despicable torturing of her comrades.

     Korin

Korin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_korin.jpg
Sole heir to the K'tailiur throne and wanting to do his kingdom proud.

The soft-spoken and gentle-natured prince of K'tailiur. A lover of music and the arts, Korin struggles with the more aggressive subjects of his required training, though his desire to please is strong, as is his understanding of the importance of his standing, as the future king. An intelligent lad showing great promise, Korin is a light of hope for a peaceful future for the morwulves.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: Takes his status and responsibility as prince seriously, but is still just a kid—youthful and anticipative.
  • Break the Cutie: Is on the verge of being brutally tortured by Volten Vagel before being rescued. Is so traumatised by the event, he passes out.
  • The Chosen Many: Is one of a few dozen bloodline heirs to Auneun’s power.
  • Moe: He is innocent, naïve and somewhat shy, and is adored by his subjects and those within his circles, and has a lot of people protective of him and concerned for his welfare.
  • Only-Child Syndrome: Korin is an only child, and it’s implied he is over-protected and has high expectations placed upon him, as the heir to the throne.
  • The Pollyanna: Has gone through a considerable amount of trials and stress (forced to flee his kingdom; pursued by relentless enemies; captured, imprisoned, and nearly tortured; not knowing if his parents were killed in the siege of Dae) and yet he retains his youthful optimism and kind-heartedness.
  • Precocious Crush: Clearly has a crush on Shifra, although considering she is only 16, their age gap probably isn’t all that big.
  • Prince Charming: Considering his personality, he will most likely grow up to have many of this trope’s qualities.
  • Princely Young Man: Is of the Blue Blood variation, with Prince Charming potential.
  • Protectorate: Is under Aubrianna’s protection up until she is forced by Vagel to choose between divulging the secrets of the Aunuen, or watch Korin be tortured to death. Knowing the bigger picture of what’s at stake, she chooses the latter (thankfully the Vala-Kas arrive in time to rescue them both).
  • Royal Blood: Is the crown prince of the kingdom of K’tailiur.

     Haskel

Haskel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_haskel.jpg
His laid-back demeanour masks a clever and calculating mind.
A wescat who enjoys the world at his own pace, and is not easily fazed by plans gone awry or unexpected events. And although to strangers he may come off as flippant and generally indifferent to his surroundings, Haskel is, in fact, highly intelligent and keenly observant. And when a certain young dragon turns up at his establishment, his scheming mind gets the chance to turn its cogs.

  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Implied, due to his (obviously) canny smarts and the fact his tavern would go belly-up (business-wise) if not for his reliable and hard-working business partner, Conso (something he openly admits to).

  • Curtains Match the Window: Hasekl has orange-hazel eyes and gingery-coloured fur.

  • Mayfly–December Friendship: With Conso. A wescat's average lifespan is around 40 years, while a haunjer's is approximately 300.

  • Nerves of Steel: Haskel isn't easily phased—definitely a wescat that puts reasoning before (emotional) reacting. Cursed dragon and friends suddenly showing up on your doorstep? A dangerous rescue mission requiring your home as a base of operations (with a high risk of retaliation from the corrupted city watch)? A sudden and horrific harpy invasion? A desperate race to escape a city thrown into violent chaos? Eh, no need to lose one's composure over such things.

  • Odd Friendship: With Conso. Their business partnership (and mutual friendship) is far from the norm, as haunjers and wescats don’t normally interact on any terms of equality or comradery.
  • Saloon Owner: A tavern, to be more specific. He's the owner of the Red Antlers Inn (co-parters with Conso).
  • Smug Smiler: His smile is a relaxed one, but paired with the rest of his expression(s), alludes to a keener perception and cleverness.

     Conso

Conso

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_conso.jpg
A gentle giant with a servant's heart.

A gentle giant and mute, compassionate and open-minded. Conso is well-liked by everyone who frequents his tavern (in which he is co-business owners with Haskel). He is in full support of Norf’s rescue mission and uses his mighty strength to defend the group when the city of Shoumeign is besieged by hundreds of blood-thirsty, vengeful harpies.

  • After-Action Healing Drama: Is one of the characters more seriously injured during the harpy attack. Being the largest and most aggressive target, he suffers numerous lacerations from harpy claws all over his arms and torso (as evidenced by those parts of his body being bandaged).
  • The Bartender: It's implied he works in this role as part of his duties as co-owner of the Red Antlers Inn.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Centre: Is unashamedly peaceful and gentle-natured, even though he's quite fearsome-looking, with some serious power packed into his muscular physique.
  • Curtains Match the Window: The blue of his eyes and head hair (also brows and thick arm hair patches) is a very similar colour.
  • Gentle Giant: Conso is a haunjer (and haunjer males stand around seven feet tall). And while most haunjer are culturally proud and jingoistic, hot-blooded heavies, Conso is a kind and temperate individual. But he will push back if his friends are threatened.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Conso is a gentle, calm, and steadfast, but also a mighty bruiser who will take aggressive action if the lives of those close to him are threatened.

  • Martial Pacifist: Is a peaceful, kind and disciplined individual, gentle in his approach to every situation. But when under threat of harm (especially harm against those in his care) he will use his brute strength to protect and defend.
  • Mayfly–December Friendship: With Hasekl. A wescat's average lifespan is around 40 years, while a haunjer's is approximately 300.

  • Odd Friendship: With Haskel. Their business partnership (and mutual friendship) is far from the norm, as haunjers and wescats don’t normally interact on any terms of equality or comradery.
  • Saloon Owner: Is Haskel's business partner in the ownership and running of the Red Antlers Inn.
  • Signed Language: Conso uses this to communicate with Haskel.
  • The Speechless: Conso is a mute.

     Riine'tae

Riine'tae

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_riinetae.jpg
Unashamed of her curious and incongruously playful nature.

The youngest member of Yessenett's Court Stealth Squad, with a rare Dream-walking ability. Riine’tae’s squad confronts (and captures) Laeka’Draeon’s company after they trespass into sacred territory. Riine’tae takes an immediate liking to Laeka’Draeon—after saving him from a lethal fall—although considers him odd and uncultured.

  • Cheerful Child: Compared to the rest of Yessenett's squad, Riine'tae's chirpy, energetic disposition really stands out.
  • Dream Walker: Riine’tae, is an actual dream-walker (in the series); her abilities being inherent (and very rare). She enters Laeka’Draeon’s dreams to sniff out his motives, but instead accidentally witnesses a Beacon Throne premonition.
  • Elemental Powers: As a sphinx, Riine'tae is able to manipulate the elements of Earth and Wind/ Air.
  • Lawful Neutral: Faithfully follows her kind's laws and creeds, even when said laws appear unreasonable to outsiders.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Is not afraid to speak her mind—straight honesty with a flavour of snark (especially when conversing with Laeka'Draeon).
  • Our Sphinxes Are Different: Valadilian sphinx have a highly-cultured and materialistic society. They are predominantly feline in form, with humanoid faces, and the toes of their front paws have extra bones and an opposable thumb, allowing them to grab and craft things with accuracy and detail. Theirs is a female-dominant society, although there are male sphinx. Valadilian sphinx are also elemental manipulators (of earth and air) and shapeshifters—able to transform into whirlwinds of sand.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted with Riine'tae—as she is the friendliest of her squad—and the sphinx creature-kind in general ... although that could be considered questionable, as the sphinx have a stringent creed and are particularly fierce and unforgiving. For certain, you do not want to get on their bad side.
  • Tattoo as Character Type: Riine'tae has a black emblematic tattoo on her shoulder blade, which indicates what sphinx tribe she is descended from.
  • Uncertain Doom: After Riine'tae and her fellow squad members form a giant funnel for Laeka'Draeon and allies to pass through the Surge spell storm into its eye, she is swept away into the storm's highly electrified currents. It is never revealed whether she and the other sphinx survived or not.

  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As a sphinx, Riine'tae can transform into a whirlwind of sand.

     Yessenett

Yessenett

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_yessenett.jpg
A firm and fervid leader, loyal to her kingdom and her Empress.

The sixth Ashri of the Court Stealth Squad of Rhin-Tset—an elite division of the sphinx' defence and reconnaissance forces. Yessen’ett strives to bring unblemished honour to the Ashri with rigid focus and a passion that is as admirable as it is severe. Yessen’ett is steadfast in her respect for law and custom and is quick to reprimand unruliness and foolish behaviour. Her squad detects Laeka'Draeon's company and discreetly follows them, taking them into custody after they attempt to cross the Sand Manta sea (an area considered sacred territory).

  • Elemental Powers: As a sphinx, Yessenett is able to manipulate the elements of Earth and Wind/ Air.
  • Facial Markings: As an Ashri (the equivalent to a unit commander), Yessenett has markings inked onto her forehead, indicative of her position.
  • Lawful Neutral: Strictly follows her kind's laws and creeds—as Ashri she has a high level of obedience and integrity to uphold, and will only compromise if her kingdom comes under immediate threat.

  • No Sense of Humor: Is a very stern, straight-forward and serious individual.

  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Not at first, as she prioritises her kind's laws and regulations, over Laeka'Draeon's attempts to explain why he and his companions are traversing through Rhin-Tset. But after Riine'tae witnesses the destruction of Rhin-Tset (by dream-waking into Laeka'Draeon's mind during a Beacon Throne premonition), Yessenett quickly realises the seriousness of the situations and releases Laeka'Draeon's group from her custody. She even assigns three of her squad members (Riine'tae included) to guide and assist the group in trekking the rest of the way to the western Beacon Throne—which is located within the dangerous Void of Storm and Fire.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Downplayed. Yessenett is not a villainous individual, but she is uncompromising and severe and not afraid to exert force to obey her inner code, as well as her kind's laws. Definitely not someone you want to make an enemy of.
  • The Stoic: She seems to remain in a perpetual state of sternness—always quietly intense, focused, and unfazed.
  • Tattoo as Character Type: Yessenett has a black emblematic tattoo on her left shoulder blade, which indicates what sphinx tribe she is descended from.
  • Uncertain Doom: After Yessenett and her squad form a giant funnel for Laeka'Draeon and allies to pass through the Surge spell storm into its eye, she is swept away into the storm's highly electrified currents. It is never revealed whether she and her squad survived or not.

  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As a sphinx, Yessenett can transform into a whirlwind of sand.

     Eminroth

Eminroth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_eminroth.jpg
The fierce and proud guardian of the Beacon Throne of Fire and Stone.

Austere, hot-tempered, and proud, Eminroth is the last of the fire serpentine drakes. Emotions untethered by anger and resentment (over his situation—particularly after his Channelling Stone is stolen) Eminroth leaves himself vulnerable to the taint of the Black Sand, which turns his immense powers against his own Beacon Throne, very nearly causing irreversible catastrophe to the kingdom of Rhin-Tset. Fortunately, Laeka’Draeon reaches him in time to awaken him and dispel the Black Sand—after which he endows Laeka’Draeon with the dragon’s Flame.

  • All-Powerful Bystander: He consciously bears witness to the entire goings-on in the kingdoms connected to his Beacon Throne, but while his body is in its enchanted, hibernation state, he is unable to directly interact with anything or anyone. The "all-powerful" aspect of the trope is downplayed, in that, while he is the most powerful elemental wielder (of Fire and Stone) in the entire series, he is not infallible (he becomes infected with Black Sand and very nearly destroys his own Beacon Throne).
  • Antiquated Linguistics: He speaks with a loosely 'Gregorian-styled' speech—implemented to mark his ancientness and belonging to a by-gone age.
  • Bequeathed Power: Eminroth bequeaths Laeka'Draeon with his ability to breath and control fire at a level normally only achieved by highly experienced fire-breathers. The incident within the goblin cavern also reveals the additional ability to control earth and fire together, both as a destructive force, and a protective barrier.
  • Elemental Powers: As a fire drake, Eminroth has control over the element of fire. But as the Beacon Throne guardian, it is also implied that he is able to manipulate earth and stone.
  • Energy Donation: Willingly gives up the manna of his physical body in order to revive his Beacon Throne, and re-kindle Laeka'Draeon's inherent ability to breath fire.
  • Fiery Redhead: Has a long mane of fine, fiery-red scales (that looks like hair) and strongly personifies his element.
  • Giant Flyer: Of the four serpentine drakes, Eminroth is by far the largest. He is so huge, in fact, that his body alters the weather around it.
  • Hot-Blooded: Clearly seen in how he reacts once awakened; he violently and angrily dispels the sandstorm surrounding Nyetu’an, and when he speaks of enduring the trials of his slumber and the terror of unwakable dreams within the Black Sand, his temper and frustration are evident. Also, whenever Laeka'Draeon taps into his power, the young dragon experiences a surge of righteous rage.
  • Last of His Kind: He is the last of the fire serpentine drakes.
