Sword Of Stars Characters

    Doriel and Laurana

Doriel and Laurana

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_doriel.jpg
The stoic, no-nonsense older brother
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_laurana.jpg
The sister with an anxious but deeply compassionate heart.

Faithful attendants and personal guardians to Belzor Ven'Ho, the brother and sister duo lead a life of humble servitude and are found to nearly always be by their master's side. Although they live a duty-bound, unassuming life, Doriel and Laurana Whetherest are dedicated and trustworthy, not to mention formidable magic-wielders, willing and ready to do whatever it takes to protect their charge.

  • Battle Butler: As Belzor's Soul Guards (loyalist servants), Doriel and Laurana are responsible for assisting in the care of his mental and physical health. As such, they are required to help defend him or obey his orders to protect others. They are highly capable strategists and users of Light magic.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: Although she has lost her physical voice, Laurana can still communicate through Soul Talk, and that also includes singing. Her voice is described as a light and airy—presumably soprano—which Ferule makes a compliment on.
  • Brother–Sister Team: They pursued the same calling to become Belzor's Soul Guards, and work alongside each other in their duties to care for and protect their master.

  • The Champion: Both are completely dedicated to Belzor, body and soul, in accordance with their chosen calling as his Soul Guards.
  • Child Hood Friends: Doriel and Laurana were assigned to Belzor from the time of his inauguration as the Misht'thurelin (which took place when he was only 12 years old). They are not significantly older than he, and so would have grown up alongside him whilst undergoing their Soul Guard training. And although they probably would not consider their relationship with Belzor on the heart-to-heart level of a normal friendship, there is no doubt the three have established a unique and intimate bond.

  • Elemental Powers: Both siblings trained in the arts of manna manipulation in order to use Light magic.
  • Energy Donation: Doriel and Laurana transfer portions of their manna into Belzor to amplify his Light magic, as well as recharge his energy when he’s expended too much.
  • Freudian Trio: This dynamic can be glimpsed between the Whetherest siblings and their master, Belzor, but merely on a surface level, as Doriel and Laurana are only minor support characters in the series.
  • Hates Small Talk: Doriel does not appear interested in casual conversations, and is perfectly fine expressing his displeasure to flippant or foolish talk.
  • The McCoy: Laurana is far more emotional and compassionate than her logical brother.
  • Mystical White Hair: Due to their extensive training to become wielders of White Magic and Light magic, the natural colouring of the siblings' fur and hair was stripped—turning white.

  • No Sense of Humor: Doriel fits squarely in this trope, often seen scowling at or scolding the Sheddlys for their flippant behaviour.

  • Power at a Price: In order to become Soul Guards to Belzor Ven'Ho, both brother and sister underwent vigorous and stringent training in order to become magic-wielders. The costs were the natural pigmentation of their bodies, as well as their voices.
  • Protectorate: As Soul Guards to Belzor, the siblings are responsible for protecting him, both physically and mentally, offering wholeheartedly their time, wisdom, insight, skills and talents.
  • The Quiet One: Neither one are particularly talkative, the reasons likely being their physical muteness as well as their positions as Soul Guards (whose duty lies in caregiving and protection, not eliciting conversations).
  • The Speechless: Subverted in that, while both are physically mute, they can still communicate through Soul Talk.
  • The Spock: Doriel could be seen as this, in the dynamic between Belzor, Laurana and himself.

  • Undying Loyalty: To Belzor. There's no questioning their motives—Doriel and Laurana are utterly dedicated to him in every way; that is the core defining quality of a Soul Guard.

    Tiel

Tiel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_tiel.jpg
A timid little outcast with a tender heart not yet crushed by adversity.

The sweet-natured, timid, and compliant ward of Borcin (one of the Master goblins of the Maurin Moors), who is treated with contempt and cruelty by the other goblins due to her mixed-blood heritage. Despite the near-constant ill-treatment, her kind-heartedness has not been extinguished, and is reignited after Laeka'Draeon saves her from being killed in the Goblin Games arena.

  • Act of True Love: Tiel sacrifices herself to stop the Maurin Moor goblins from swarming Laeka'Draeon's group solely due to her fondness for Ghinzel and trust in Laeka’Draeon.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The catalyst for her Heel–Face Turn is Laeka’Draeon—despite the danger and trauma to himself during the Goblin Games—saving her from the rampaging troll, as well as Ghinzel interacting with her with kindness and curiosity.
  • Break the Cutie: Implied as Tiel's upbringing, being the target of torment and abuse from her fellow Maurin Moor goblins due to her mixed-blood.
  • Butt-Monkey: Tiel is the target of bullying and abuse from many of the Maurin Moor goblins, including her guardian, Borcin.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Tiel is treated contemptuously by the other mountain goblins of Maurin Moors due to being a half-wood, half-mountain goblin.
  • Harmful to Minors: Although Tiel’s age is never revealed in the main story, it’s obvious she’s quite young. She is ostracised, brutalised and bullied by most (if not all) the other goblins of the Maurin Moors.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Laeka’Draeon saves her from the troll, Tiel turns against her Master and helps the other companions retrieve Ghinzel’s stolen belongings, leads them to where Laeka’Draeon and Ghinzel are being held, and then stealthily guides the group through the goblin tunnels, to where Volten Vagel has taken Shifra.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: After choosing the help Laeka’Draeon and his companions escape the goblin passages, Tiel sacrifices her one chance at a life of freedom and friendship by staying behind in the collapsing cavern to hold the goblin gate closed; effectively stopping the other goblins from swarming Laeka’Draeon’s group, but at the cost of her life.
  • Kick the Dog: How Baucin and the other Maurin Moor goblins treat poor little Tiel is especially and needlessly mean-spirited (physically abusing her, taunting her, bullying her and forcing her to do laborious tasks).
  • Our Goblins Are Different: The general impression of the wood goblins is that they are passive and timid although implied to be nosy and knowledgeable, and will help those who help them. They are described as small and hairless, with pointed ears and beak-like mouths, and have some reasonable semblance of fashion and culture. Mountain goblins are the most fearsome of the goblin-types, being the largest and most brutish, with a ruthless caste system, a penchant for obtaining knowledge and coin, and a fervent love of sport (particularly of the hunting and fighting kind). They have thick, scaly skin and flat flared nostrils.

  • Shrinking Violet: Due to her toxic and abusing environment, Tiel is quite shy and clearly suffers from anxieties and fear of (unwarranted) punishment.

  • Ugly Cute: Goblins are not known for appealing physiques or comely features, and Tiel is no different, being scrawny and speckle-skinned with a bald head and beak-like mouth. And yet her sweet disposition and Woobie status make her endearing.
  • The Woobie: The awful treatment Tiel receives from the others of her kind (due to her being a half-breed) is a particularly unfair and cruel situation for her. Made all the more awful since she is just a child—and a soft, sweet-natured one at that. One cannot help but feel sorry for the poor little thing.

     Tappala

Tappala

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_tappala.jpg
Want to know about anything and everything? So does Tappala!
A vivacious and vocal wescat who is enthusiastically passionate about her profession (archaeology) as well as discovering new and interesting things of any type and origin. She heads one of the expedition teams that delve into the Deep Ways to recover lost artefacts and documented histories.

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Tappala is taking part in an audacious archaeological expedition in the Deep Ways when she and her partner Dirk encounter Laeka’Draeon’s group. She is absolutely passionate about her work and fearless in exploring any and all forgotten depths and regions of the world in order to uncover and preserve ancient artefacts.
  • Badass Bookworm: Tappala is passionate about history and recovering artefacts and documents retaining to lost/ in-complete histories. She's also gutsy enough to form an expedition into the Deep Ways—a realm known for its areas of danger and corruption.
  • Beneath the Earth: Where Laeka'Draeon and his friends encounter Tappala and Dirk for the first time. The latter two are part of an archeological expedition.
  • Dug Too Deep: Essentially it is the expeditions initiated by Tappala and Bardva (and others) that rouse the Tainted Shadows .

  • Foil: Tappala is the bright, bubbly and energetic companion of quiet, steady and down-to-earth Dirk.

  • Genki Girl: Tappala is enthusiastic in everything she does and has a lot of energy to burn—always wanting to explore, learn, question, and investigate things.
  • Goggles Do Something Unusual: Aside from the obvious dust-protection Tappala's goggles provide, they also have a magnification feature(and possibly other useful modes).
  • Lost Technology: One of the primary reasons for Tappala's being in the Deep Ways—to try and recover the lost relics and artefacts of the long-fallen duarden empire.
  • Mayfly–December Friendship: With the duard, Dirk (who's lifespan is significantly longer than hers). Wescats average 40 years, while duards average 430!
  • Motor Mouth: It's her superpower; she is super chatty, and surprising intelligible.
  • Opposites Attract: Tappala and Dirk get along extremely well, even though their personalities are very different.

  • Parrot Pet Position: She regularly rides on Dirk's shoulders.
  • Plucky Girl: Tappala is vivacious and undeniably bold in her determination to explore and uncover the lost archaeological secrets of the Deep Ways (despite the numerous threats the tainted realms hold). Even after the terrible incident of discovering the body of her apprentice (and the other massacred archaeologists), she still keeps her head on straight and helps Laeka’Draeon’s group make their escape. Even after the Tainted Shadows incident, she’s still as eager and excited as ever to return to her Deep Way explorations.
  • Utility Belt: Tappala wears one that can carry an assortment of archeological tools as well as cylindrical cases that carry papers and scrolls (like maps).

     Dirk

Dirk

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_dirk.jpg
A quiet and diligent duard whose passion for history extends to all kinds and cultures.

Fellow archaeologist and long-time partner/ co-worker to Tappala, Dirk balances out her zealous energy with a calm and steady disposition. As a duard, he has extensive knowledge of his kind's grand and sombre history, which makes his presence in the Deep Ways all the more integral. It is thanks to his physical intervention that Laeka'Draeon's company is rescued from the coil slug assault. He, along with Tappala, offer their assistance further by helping the group navigate through the Deep Ways.

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Although more calmly tempered in his approach, Dirk is just as much the brave and willing adventurer as his lively companion, Tappala.
  • The Big Guy: Although not physically tall, he is most certainly physically strong, and does most of the heavy-lifting and laborious duties of Tappala's archeology team.
  • Foil: Dirk is this to Tappala, being the mellow, down-to-earth one of the pair—contrasting her hyper-active, eccentric tendencies.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Dirk is broad-shouldered enough (and Tappala small enough) to have his friend ride on his shoulders.
  • Mayfly–December Friendship: With the wescat, Tappala, who's lifespan is significantly shorter (wescats average 40 years) than his (around 430 years).
  • Mighty Glacier: A part of Dirk's physical description in Chapter 27 of The Sword of Stars heavily implies this: "Though only a couple of inches taller than Norf, the stranger's brawny physique gave the impression of immense physical strength". Also, duards in general are known for their brawn, not their speed.
  • Opposites Attract: Dirk could not be more different than Tappala, and yet they are life-long friends whose one shared passion (archeology) has bonded them in a unique and special way.
  • Our Dwarves Are All the Same: Averted. While duards are the equivalent of a dwarven race within the Dragon Calling universe, they have plenty of unique differences, including more mole-like features (clawed feet and buttoned noses) and blueish skin and milky eyes. Also, while duards have a long history of technological advancement and strong mining industries, they are not greedy for precious minerals, nor are they battle-mongering. They are also not inclined to overindulgence (of food or alcohol) but they are definitely a proud and opinionated species. Dirk is a good example of a quiet-natured duard (most of his kind are more rowdy and outspoken).
  • The Quiet One: Impressions gear him toward this disposition, although with Tappala as a constant companion, it's no wonder he rarely talks—likely he's used to not being able to get a word in before she starts chattering off.

     Moldav

Moldav

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_moldav.jpg
True to his convictions and unflinchingly devoted to his kin and cause.

An intelligent and strong-willed hippogriff, and high-ranked sentinel of Coron-Mias. Although initial perceptions label him as hardhearted, such a humourless and severe disposition does not disqualify him from caring; Moldav is completely dedicated to his calling in protecting all in his care (and even strangers) and the proof is seen in his actions in regards to aiding Laeka'Draeon and company.

  • Abnormal Limb Rotation Range: While walking ahead of Laeka'Draeon's group (leading them into Coron-Mias) Moldav twists his head around (like an owl) to give direct eye contact while speaking with them. It is implied he does this to appear imposing, and since he doesn't injure himself, it can be assumed it is an ability inherent in all hippogriffs.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Hippogriffs have a wonderfully diverse colouring range, similar to horse breeds. Moldav has predominantly brown plumage that turns a stunning bronze hue when in direct sunlight. The tips of his prime tail, wing, and neck feathers are a brilliant blue.
  • Giant Flyer: Hippogriffs are the second-largest of the ten ruling creature-kinds, and one of the largest winged creatures in Valadae. Moldav is a prime example of his species and is the largest of the hippogriffs that directly assist Laeka’Draeon in his quest.
  • Good is Not Nice: Is abrasive and cynical toward those he does not know. He is also rather arrogant—being a hippogriff sentinel of Coron-Mias, he likely sees most other creatures as beneath him and worthy of his respect only if they earn it in a significant way.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Moldav is a loyal and obedient guardian to his kin and realm, but woe to those who are on the receiving end of his wrath; he is a vicious and relentless fighter (as witnessed during the Second Gathering in Book 5).
  • Horse of a Different Colour: Assists Laeka’Draeon and company by acting as a flying mount to and from the Duintrai Fortress, to the City of Shadows (Duintrai), back to Coron-Mias, and then to the Risiden's north-west border.

  • Mr. Vice Guy: Is a noticeably arrogant and curt individual with fixed opinions and a rather cynical view of strangers. Still, Moldav is a loyal, trustworthy and valiant hippogriff.
  • Our Gryphons Are Different: Is a hippogriff (a creature sharing avian and equine biological features), which—in Valadilian history—is one of the three allied creature-kinds known as the Three Winged Kings (which also included actual gryphons).
  • The Paladin: Is a strong and competent sentinel of Coron-Mias, dedicated to protecting innocents, and furthering the cause of peace and justice.

  • Repeating So the Audience Can Hear: Moldav translates Lord Throralvin's speech at the start of the forzaeder doen between Yarad and the Gaalainven. Justified, since all of Laeka'Draeon's company (excluding the hippogriffs) do not understand the manorphis' native language.
  • Rock Theme Naming: Moldav is named after the amorphous rock, Moldavite, which has an intense green colouring (like Moldav’s eyes).

     Ametrine

Ametrine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_ametrine.jpg
Ametrine’s curious and openly agreeable outlook is as striking as her golden plumage.

An attentive, compassionate, and temperate hippogriff, and subordinate sentinel under Moldav. Ametrine is guarding Coron-Mias' south-eastern entrance into the Deep Ways alongside Moldav (and two other hippogriffs), when Laeka’Draeon’s company emerges. She immediately realises Ubi’s plight takes action to try and save her life. Later, she joins Moldav in the escort mission to see Laeka’Draeon’s group safely to the Eastern Beacon Throne, and again when the group is unexpectedly diverted to Duintrai City.

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Hippogriffs have a wonderfully diverse colouring range, similar to horse breeds. Ametrine has solid golden plumage (and fur), which appears to be an uncommon hereditary trait in hippogriff colouring (all other hippogriffs described in the series have more than one colour tone, and/ or an iridescent sheen that's of a different hue to the base colour of the feathers).
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has golden eyes and golden plumage. Implied to be a very pretty hippogriff.
  • Friend to All Children: She takes an immediate liking to Ghinzel and develops a mutual fondness with the young fellis.
  • Giant Flyer: Ametrine is a hippogriff, which is the second-largest of the ten ruling creature-kinds, and one of the largest winged creatures in Valadae.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Despite her gentle nature, she is a skilled and fearsome fighter and one of the elite sentinels of Coron-Mias.

  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has striking golden feathers covering her entire body, and is a kind and supportive individual, devoted to helping those in need.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: During the Second Gathering, when Laeka'Draeon's advancement unit attempts to reach the Surge spell by air and are subsequently attacked head-on by a swarm of hobgoblin-mounted ghoshmyls, it is Ametrine who comes to Laeka'Draeon and Shifra's rescue—after they are snared in a ghoshmyl's claws. She fearlessly swoops down and attacks the beast's head, causing it to release Laeka'Draeon. Unfortunately, the maneuver leaves her unguarded and she is taken out by another ghoshmyl.
  • Horse of a Different Colour: Like Moldav, Ametrine assists Laeka’Draeon's company by acting as a flying mount during the Eastern Beacon Throne mission, and also during the Manorphis Arc.

  • Rock Theme Naming: Is named after the blended quartz (of purple and yellow colouring), ametrine.

     Eran Va'eleon

Eran Va'eleon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_eran_vaeleon.jpg
Serene in countenance and dedicated to serving his people well, as Overseer of Coron-Mias.

The calm and insightful Overseer of Coron-Mias, Eran is passionate about helping those around him better their lives, and in doing so, bettering the world around them. He is a fine example of his race, advocating the disciplines of compassion, temperance, harmony, and honour, as is the foundational customs of his kind.He offers Laeka’Draeon’s company sanctuary and hospitality, and assists in their efforts to find and restore the Eastern Beacon Throne—including directly heading the assigned entourage, alongside his silver-white hippogriff mount.

  • Cosmopolitan Council: Va'eleon is the organiser and host of the Crown Meet, in which the leaders of the southern and eastern kingdoms gather and collaborate on what to do in regards to the threat from Beruun Terrolaghn.
  • Frontline General: Although he is not a general by profession, Eran Va’eleon is an experienced warrior and willingly leads the charge of his elite units into battle during the Second Gathering.
  • Inhumanly Beautiful Race: The evaish are described as having an elegant and strange beauty. They constantly hum at the back of their throats, the sound soft and musical, and they move about with such grace that it appears as if they are dancing. They are implied to be pure creatures, deeply connected with nature and renewal.
  • Just the First Citizen: Lord Eran Va’eleon is the overseer of Coron-Mias, not its ruler or law-maker, but definitely its law-enforcer and peace-keeper.

  • Our Elves Are Different: As the duards are the equivalent of dwarves in the Dragon Calling universe, the evaish are the equivalent of elves—with some very unique and obvious differences, of course.
  • Racial Remnant: He is the leader of the last remaining Valadilian evaish, whose once-great provinces and cities were destroyed during the War of Shores. The remnant now resides in Amaranthine, which lies at the heart of Coron-Mias.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Lord Va'eleon is very accepting and forward-thinking in regards to Laeka'Draeon and his quest. He welcomes the group into his domain as honoured guests and even offers his assistance directly as their guide to the eastern Beacon Throne. Upon their return, he allows all of them to participate in the Crown Meet, which would normally be reserved for important authority figures. Later in the series, he hosts the group within his pavilion prior to the Second Gathering. He also volunteers himself and an elite group of his hippogriff and evaish warriors to form a part of Laeka'Draeon's advance unit.
  • Superior Species: It is implied that the evaish are an exceptionally wise, beautiful, and pure-hearted race—more-so than the unicorns.
  • Uncertain Doom: Sadly, after Lord Va'eleon goes after Cassiopeia during the Final Battle, he is never seen or heard from again. Shifra's letter to Prince Korin mentions his people's attempt to find him, without success.

     Zana

Zana

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_lefel.jpg
A young, loyal hippogriff who speaks with her actions, not words.

A quiet and reserved hippogriff of Coron-Mias, who volunteers to join the hippogriff escort assigned to Laeka'Draeon and company for their journey to the east coast of Risenden—where the Beacon Throne of Law and Magic resides. Since she carries Norf on her back during the return journey, she is instructed to accompany the group to Duintrai City, to which she faithfully and ungrudgingly complies.

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Hippogriffs have a wonderfully diverse colouring range, similar to horse breeds. Although Zana is a seemingly plain grey colour, her feathers (and fur) actually have a dazzling green sheen (when in sunlight), as well as sections of pearlescent white.
  • Giant Flyer: Although she is the smallest of the hippogriffs assigned to the Beacon Throne escort mission, Zana is still quite a large (winged) creature.
  • Horse of a Different Colour: Her part in the story is primarily to act as a mount (for Laeka'Draeon's company). But she also assists in watching over Laeka'Draeon's group (alongside Moldav and Ametrine) during the Manorphis Arc.
  • Jumped at the Call: Downplayed. Zana is simply a supporting character, however, it is implied that the Beacon Throne escort mission is voluntarily and that she willingly offered her services.

  • Rock Theme Naming: Named after the phosphate mineral, zanazziite, which comes in colours ranging between pale and dark olive, with a pearly lustre. Zana's colouring is grey with a pale green sheen. Her eyes are also of a lighter olive colour.
  • The Voiceless: Zana has no dialogue in any of the books, and is a passive participant in the Beacon Throne and Manorphis Arcs of Books 4 & 5.

     Rhodon

Rhodon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_rhodon.jpg
A regal, faithful follower of the Coron-Mias hippogriff codes.

Like Zana before him, Rhodon volunteers his time and strength to the hippogriff escort assigned (by Lord Va'eleon) to Laeka'Draeon and company for their journey to Duintrai Fortress and the eastern Beacon Throne. When the group is waylaid on their return journey, and Rhodon's rider is abducted, the regal red hippogriff follows Lord Va'eleon back to Coron-Mias and does not participate in the Manorphis Arc. He does, however, make a brief return to escort Laeka'Draeon's group from Coron-Mias to the north-eastern border of the kingdom of Risenden.

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Hippogriffs have a wonderfully diverse colouring range, similar to horse breeds. Rhodon is a particularly eye-catching example of his species, being a fiery desert-red colour, with edges and tips of golden-yellow.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Rhodon has intense red feathers, and eyes that are noticeably red in colour.
  • Giant Flyer: Is described as a sleek and refined-looking hippogriff.
  • Horse of a Different Colour: His part in the story is primarily to act as a mount (for Laeka'Draeon's company).
  • Jumped at the Call: Downplayed. Like Zana, he is a small supporting character, but the Beacon Throne escort mission held no obligations and so his participation is implied to be willing and voluntary.

  • Rock Theme Naming: Rhodon is named after the crystalline mineral rhodonite—which is known for its rose, brown, and red colourings (Rhodon has predominantly red-hued feathering).
  • The Voiceless: Rhodon is given no active dialogue lines in the series. But his presence during the eastern Beacon Throne arc is still necessary.

     Dontriavien

Dontriavien

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_dontriavein.jpg
The melancholy and wise guardian of the Beacon Throne of Law and Magic.

A melancholic and chaste creature, Dontriavien is the last of the flora serpentine drakes. He was encased in stone possessed by the spirits of wicked beings bound to the Soul Transferral spell, and, when Laeka’Draeon and company arrived to restore the Throne, became a living weapon wielded against them until Laeka’Draeon was able to physically awaken him.

  • All-Powerful Bystander: He consciously bears witness to the entire goings-on in the kingdoms connected to his Beacon Throne, but while his body is in its enchanted, hibernation state, he is unable to directly interact with anything or anyone. The "all-powerful" aspect of the trope is downplayed, in that, while he is the most powerful flora elemental drake (and manipulator of bending and suppressing laws and spells) in the entire series, he is not infallible.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: Dontriavien speaks with a loosely 'Gregorian-styled' speech—implemented to mark his ancientness and belonging to a by-gone age.

  • Disappears into Light: When he performs the Last Sacrifice his body disintegrates into particles of light, which are then absorbed into his Throne. A portion remains and tethers to Laeka’Draeon.
  • Dying Race: His kind is thought by many to be long-ago extinct, but Dontriavien is one of four remaining (living) serpentine drakes. By the time his awakening takes place, he is actually one of only two remaining drakes, and, sadly, is fated to die in order to restore the flow of his Beacon Throne.
  • Energy Donation: Willingly gives up the manna of his physical body in order to revive his Beacon Throne, and imbue Laeka'Draeon with a suppression power that blocks the negative effects of his tainted blood.
  • Giant Flyer: He is a serpentine drake—the largest flying creature in Valadae. According to Word of God, he is the third largest of the drakes.

  • I Die Free: Implied that he found his induced slumber more like imprisonment—which was made exceedingly worse when his Throne was desecrated and the stone encasing his body became possessed by the spirits of those who—after stealing the Chanelling Stone—remained behind to booby-trap the entire Beacon Throne chamber. He welcomes his required sacrifice to aid Laeka'Draeon and reignite his Beacon Throne.
Dontriavien: Lo, at the last, I am free.
  • Last of His Kind: He is the last of the flora serpentine drakes.
  • Living Relic: He is one of four serpentine drakes that chose an existence of loneliness and self-isolation by becoming the living stabilisers of their respective Thrones, while the rest of their entire race sacrificed their lives to activate the Thrones’ powers in order to subvert the destruction of the first Manna Eruption.

  • Our Dragons Are Different: Not an actual dragon, but his kind are certainly inspired by the eastern variation of Earth dragons, being elongated, wingless (flight by magic), with hair-like manes and deer-like antlers.
  • People Puppets: After the stone cacoon protecting his body from the elements becomes possessed, Dontriavien loses control of his body, which is manipulated against his will into attacking Laeka'Draeon and his friends.
  • Power Floats: He is a master elemental user, guardian of the Beacon Throne of Law and Magic, and he hovers in the air, his coils in a constant, slow motion, like a snake in water: "Dontriavien's beautiful coils rolled gently around the Beacon Throne, weightless as the air itself and sparkling with a sea-green and dew-drop glisten."
  • Power Nullifier: Using his manipulative manna abilities, Dontriavien is able to temporarily suppress the effects of the blood curse in Laeka'Draeon. This (temporarily) ensures Laeka'Draeon will not slip into his Superpowered Evil Side.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Has been alive since the Elder Age, making him at least 2500 years old.
  • The Woobie: Out of all the drakes, Dontriavien is the most melancholy and grief-stricken—and undergoes a particularly cruel bout of mental torment after his stone cocoon becomes possessed by evil beings. His sorrow is so permeating, that by just looking at him (after he is awakened and requests to see the sky and sea one last time) Laeka'Draeon is brought to tears.
