Fanfic / Switching Places Evangelion

Go To

Switching Places Evangelion is a crossover Crack Fic between Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tenchi Muyo! and Ranma ½ by Greyff.

After getting involved with one of Washu’s experiments Mihoshi is turned into a Genie. Ranma ends up finding her lamp and wanting to get the wording of his wish just right goes to Nabiki for help. Unfortunately she didn’t believe his story and inadvertedly ended up wishing that Ranma switches places with Shinji Ikari needless to say Hilarity Ensues.

Add Tropes as you spot them! This page is waaaayyy underlength.

Switching Places Evangelion provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Done in universe Ranma quickly discovered that that physic in Evangelion causing him to go through The Worf Effect as a little slower, a little weaker and didn’t heal as fast.
    • More importantly chi and A.T. Fields work differently so while Ranma loses his ability to project his chi to do things like Fierce Tiger Ball or Sky Dragon Ascension. He gains the ability to create a Laser Blade and Deflector Shields it also makes techniques such a Hidden Weaponry far stronger.
    • The Worf Effect can be overcome through Syncronization.
    • Mihoshi had been the wish-granter. Ranma had translated to this world. Chi didn't act the same, it was philosophically linked to AT Fields for one thing.
  • Analogy Backfire: Ranma has no idea what the 'carpet matches the drapes' means
  • Applied Mathematics: According to Makie. 'Stupid' + 'It Worked' = 'Not Stupid.'
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Nabiki is the stories Unwitting Instigator of Doom because she didn’t believe that Ranma found a Genie in a Bottle
  • Asteroids Monster: Asuka’s giant panties split into thousands of regular sized panties
  • Badass on Paper: Inverted Ritsuko was having trouble fitting the image of the Ranma in the dossier together with him in real life
  • Barrier-Busting Blow: Ranma did this to one of the Angels he was fighting.
  • Barrier Warrior: Mihoshi mentioned that Ranma will eventually become this.
  • Becoming the Genie: When Mihoshi accidently contacted a high-energy subdimension known as the Land Of The Djinn, she expressed a desire to be a genie like on I Dream Of Jeannie.
  • Benevolent Genie: Played with while Mihoshi is this trope she is also well Mihoshi so the wishes she grants usually Gone Horribly Right.
  • Berserk Button: Calling and Angel a Kaiju is this for Ritsuko Akagi.
Doctor Akagi: IT'S NOT A KAIJU!
  • Beyond the Impossible: Ranma’s initial synchronization rate read 50 1/2 not 50.5 but 50 1/2.
    • Ranma performing a Stealth Hi/Bye with the Eva a four hundred foot tall war machine.
  • Bio-Augmentation: Yui gave Ranma genetic upgrades to help him fight the Angels.
    • It is referred to as ProjectWaShu.
  • Book Dumb: Despite what his ego may have said to some, Ranma was aware of at least some of his faults. He knew that he wasn't really suited to 'book learning', and would never be one of those students that schools held up as marks of excellence. To him, that sort of thing had never been all that important, given that he had always known that he would be a martial artist, and that his schooling was spotty at best.
  • Brain Bleach: Makoto did not like the image of a Dominatrix Eva with high heels performing BDSM on an Angel
  • Can't Hold His Liquor; Both played straight and averted as while Ranma had no tolerance for alcohol his high metabolism means he gets over it fast.
  • Cassandra Truth: No one believed that Asuka was the real Asuka as she wasn’t the first person to claim that.
  • Clone by Conversion: An Angel in the form of a giant flying pair of Asuka’s panties did this using Me's a Crowd. Anybody who the pair of panties lands on turns into a copy of Asuka.
  • Clone Degeneration: The smaller versions of Asuka's panties have weak AT fields meaning that normal weapons work on them.
  • Clone Degeneration: The cloning process isn’t 100% with each of the various Asuka having differences. Some have smaller breasts, some have bigger, some are younger, taller, shorter, have longer or shorter hair, ect.
  • Cloth Fu: The Angel was transformed into Makie Sasaki so this trope is a given.
  • Comically Missing the Point: In response to Ranma’s question about Our Genies Are Different Mihoshi answered that the only time she was ever blue was when she had a cold
  • Contrived Clumsiness: Rei attempted this by waiting naked outside of the bathroom with her bucket of bath-things for the perfect opportunity to accidentally walk in on Ranma
  • Could Say It, But...: Ritsuko refused to give Misato the situation report because saying that there are panty-zombies trying to get into NERV would be... troublesome.
  • Crazy-Prepared: The moment the Asuka zombie clones started to appear Maya invalidated Asuka’s NERV ID.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check:
    • Ranma paraphrased some of Nabiki’s complaints about the series to NERV to avert this trope and get some cashflow going. Things such as opening a gift shop, doing some tours of selected areas of the secret underground base.
    • He also suggested that Misato could write a book.
  • Dead Man Writing: Yui did this to explain Ranma’s super human abilities
  • Didn't See That Coming: Shamshel sould have been a giant inhuman monster designed for a specific mode of attack, but what they got instead was a giant version of Naga the Serpent
  • Dye Hard: Ranma could easily tell that Ritsuko Akagi dyes her hair blonde
Ranma: Huh? You're not blonde. Not really. Ya dye your hair, right? There's ways of tellin', like with the eyebrows, though some people insist on checkin' if the 'carpet matches the drapes', whatever that means.
    • Averted when she was deaged and her hair became natural blond.
  • Eating the Enemy: Ranma had his Evangelion do this to the fish Angel figuring that it was one of those sensations being fed to him through the link.
  • Eskimos Aren't Real: Every time Ranma performs a ninja technique Asuka and Ritsuko claim Ninja don't exist.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Washu eventually realized Mihoshi went a bit over board with Protagonist Power-Up Privileges so to prevent Ranma from being killed as Angel spy she created a Dead Man Writing of Yui.
  • Fakin' MacGuffin; There are two samples of Ranma’s blood a fake one marked 'Ranma Ikari genetic sample' and a real one marked with Misato's name."
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: In universe Many fans wanted Shinji and Ryoga to end up together
  • Fantastically Indifferent: This was Kaji’s response to seeing Asuka’s panties attacking Tokyo-3
Asuka: WHY IS A PAIR OF MY PANTIES ON TV?
Kaji: They appear to be attacking Tokyo-3. You really need to be more careful with your choice of detergents you know.
Akuka: WHY ARE MY PANTIES ATTACKING TOKYO-3?
    • Pretty much everyone but Ritsuko
Ritsuko: WHAT DOES HE DO - TWENTY IMPOSSIBLE THINGS BEFORE BREAKFAST?
Misato: Nah, only four or five, gotta admit though, the Blazing Sword thing is a pretty good idea. Extends his reach.
  • Fun with Foreign Languages: Ranma learned a bunch of German phrases to impress Asuka as well to have insults to fire back at her. Unfortunately since he had no idea what he was reading he ended up memorizing not insults but Unusual Euphemism as well as random nonsense.
  • Gender Bender: Anyone who has Auska’s panties land on them turns into a clone of Asuka so if you’re male this trope applies.
  • Genre Savvy: Rei is becoming this in her efforts to seduce Ranma
    Rei: Oh! I understand.
Ranma: I am really doubting that somehow,
Rei: You're the martial artist protaganist, and therefore you have to have a rival, I've read several series and they all have that pattern. So Asuka is your rival. Or a tsundere.
Ranma: Oh, you know, maybe you've got something there.
Asuka: What does that make YOU, First Child?
    Rei: Romantic lead,
  • Gone Horribly Right: Discussed. According to Mihoshi strong curses are really hard to fix because they tend to try to not get fixed.
    • Mihoshi’s wishes have all ended up becoming this
  • Goth: Shinji’s girl form is described as this
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Shinji is clearly shown to be bisexual and he's fully into yaoi by the end of the series because all the women treat him so rotten.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Gendo planned to use this to manipulate Ranma
  • Humanity Ensues: The Angel that Ranma captured turned into an approximation at least of Makie Sasaki.
  • I Am Spartacus: Because Clone by Conversion leaves blank areas in a person's memories caused a lot of the Doppelganger’s to legitimately believe that they were the original Asuka.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: In order to learn how to seduce Ranma Rei looked up dating websites, read books, and even played a dating-sim, which she'd already failed at twice.
  • Improbably Predictable: Ranma performed a Stealth Hi/Bye Accidental Pervert moment unfortunately Rei was Genre Savvy enough to figure out where he was.
  • Indy Ploy: As back in Ranma ½, Ranma tends to work out his new techniques on the fly when he had his back against the wall.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink; The NERV soldier had this reaction upon seeing a giant pair of panties attacking Tokyo 3.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Rei wondered how Ranma was the pervert when Asuka walked in him in bathroom fully clothed and grabbed him. Her response was that he just was as it was different when a girl looks at a guy.
  • Insistent Terminology: It is an Angel not a Kaiju.
  • Instant Awesome: Just Add Mecha!: Averted Ranma wasn’t impressed with the EVA Unit because it didn’t have any cool weapons.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Unit 01 does have a Blazing Sword.
  • Insult Friendly Fire: While Thinking Out Loud Ranma called Mihoshi a blonde ditz causing Ritsuko to think he was insulting her. Ranma replied that she wasn’t blond.
    • It happened again when he said that Happosai would love to fight Asuka’s giant panties and she thought he was referring to her when he called him the old freak.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While beating him to within an inch of his life was a bit much Shinji was just masturbating in a strangers house.
  • Laser Blade: Blazing Sword condenses part of the AT field into a blade useful in combat.
  • Literal Genie: You have to be real careful to get the wording right when trying to cure a curse do to how powerful they are.
  • Lopsided Dichotomy: Asuka and Ritsuko caught Ranma flying as he was trying out a new technique so Asuka decided that Ranma being from Krypton was the perfect explanation for Reality Is Out to Lunch while Ritsuko figured they were just drunk.
  • Magically-Binding Contract: Rubbing a lamb puts one into this with the genie though the rubber only gets 1 wish instead of 3.
    • Rule #1: You can't simply wish for more wishes. Not permitted. Not gonna happen.
    • Rule #2: The power of Life & Death is not within the province of this particular genie. He'd have to contact an outside source - and if that's a no go - you'd have wasted your wish. So no killings, and no resurrections.
    • Rule #3: All wishes will comply with the Law Of Conservation Of Magick, least amount of magic required to reach the specified result.
    • Rule #4: No run-on wishes.
    • Rule #5: No intrinsic world-wide changes in personality allowed. World peace would require everyone in the world to either be dead or mellowed out to the point of near catatonia.
  • Man, I Feel Like a Woman: Shinji right after the transfer. He immediately fainted from shock.
  • Mind Screw: When an Angel in the form of a Giant pair of Asuka's panties attacked Tokyo-3 lets just say that people had a hard time wrapping their heads around it.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Due to Insult Friendly Fire Ritsuko threatened to make Ranma’s next exam an unpleasant one. Needless to say there were a number of NERV personnel who had a sudden flash of sympathy for a certain son of Gendo Ikari.
  • Mistaken for an Imposter: Asuka was initially believed to be another clone
    • Made all the worse due to the fact that there were five other Asuka’s with the proper memories and sync ratio
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Getting a sample of Ranma’s blood is extremely difficult as any time he twitched so much as a muscle he'd break the needle. It took Ritsuko seven tries before she got it.
    • Shinji Saotome was just plain bad at martial arts, but had an invulnerability factor that Keitaro Urashima would have envied.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Panty covered Zombie Asuka clones
  • Noodle Incident: The result of Keitaro Urashima’s wish to make all the girls happy is never specified but everyone shudders when they think about it.
  • Now What?: NERV’s reaction when Ranma got an Angel to surrender
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: Averted when Gendo and Ritsuko were discussing who Ranma was going to live with she instantly realized that he was referring to her when he said that they needed to place him with someone whom they can carefully monitor and immediately answered no.
  • Oh, Crap!: Nabiki upon realizing that Ranma was telling the truth after she sent him to Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Older Than They Look: Ritsuko when she was deaged to 14
  • Our Genies Are Different: Mihoshi
    Ranma: So you're... a genie,
    Mihoshi: That's right!
Ranma: I was expecting someone with blue skin and a beard,
Mihoshi: Well, I've never had a beard, but once I got really really cold and got kinda bluish. Oh, and you don't get three wishes. Just one.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: They’re created when a pair of Asuka’s panty’s lands on your head and transforms you into clones of Asuka.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Ritsuko promised herself that she would find the person that commented on Shamshel’s boobs and punish them appropriately.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Played with Ranma has said a number of sexist things to a raging Ritsuko such as checking if the curtains match the drapes and wondering if it was her time of the month. However, it is clear he has no idea what these phrases mean.
  • Protagonist Power-Up Privileges: When Mihoshi translated to Evangelion she considered him the new main character causing this trope to apply when Adaptational Superpower Change went into effect. So she got a little overboard in some respects, but that was pretty much a Mihoshi trait anyway.
  • Rant Inducing Slight: Discovering that Rei was buying sexy lingerie and remembering her Strong Family Resemblance caused this in Ritsuko
  • Reality Is Out to Lunch: Asuka Langley Soryu was quite intelligent when she applied herself and wanted to be. Ever since she'd come to Japan, she had been trying to make sense of a world that had made less and less sense. A rational explanation for her world getting thrown upside-down or at least seriously sideways was something she wanted very much.
  • Refusal of the Call: Ritsuko flat out refused to do a synchronization test when she became 14 again
  • Re-Power: While chi and the AT fields are similar, Ranma can’t do everything he could back in Ranma One Half in Neon Genesis Evangelion. He had to invent new techniques because a few old ones just wouldn't work.
  • Required Secondary Powers: While Ranma is still superhuman he is no longer able to defy physics. When he leaps up the the pavement he leaps from is crushed the pavement. Equal and opposite reaction. Same with the fight with the Angel in the Eva unit. He tore up the streets making tight corners and dodging.
  • Revealing Cover-Up: This was Ranma’s response to Ritsuko telling him that the Evangelion project was classified.
Ranma: Yer gonna keep four-hunnert foot tall alien invaders bein' fought by an armored giant robot in the streets of the new capital of Japan secret?
  • Sanity Slippage: The craziness that usually follows Ranma is starting to get to Doctor Akagi
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Toji Suzuhara quickly decided that fighting flying panties was NOT something he had trained for and abandoned Kensuke Aida to his fate.
    • Asuka when she had to fight the giant Tentacle Monster
  • Seen It All: Averted the veteran soldier had no idea what to do upon seeing a giant pair of flying panties.
  • Sex Is Evil, and I Am Horny: Rei uses this trope to deconstruct the Tsundere. Tsundere’s transfer any guilt or social/cultural dissonance between their inner pervertedness and the face they choose to present to the world to their love interest
  • Shooting Superman: Subverted other than moving on their own and turning anyone they land on into zombie clones Asuka’s panties are fairly normal meaning that the regular soldiers can just shoot them.
    • Plus since they were just panties the soldiers could use water guns and hoses on them
    • However the fact that they can fly mean that they are evasive enough to dodge the bullets.
  • Shout-Out: Shinji 1/2 could be considered one for Girls Bravo given that his treatment from women ultimately turned him off of them.
  • Show Within a Show: Mihoshi granting the wish had sent it on to the Council Of Djinn, using her own interpretations and paradigm. Shinji Ikari had therefore been taken out of Evangelion and put into a 'Ranma 1/2' setting that started out as 'martial arts comedy' and turned 'shonen ai' by the time it ended.
    • In addition to the series created by the switch "Shinji 1/2" there is also "Sailor Suikoden" and "Dresden Files."
  • So What Do We Do Now?: This was everyone’s reaction to an Angel surrendering what do they do with a giant moister woman in skimpy clothing?
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When soldiers attempted to shoot Asuka’s panty’s out of the sky only find that easier said than done Makie suggested that they shoot where the panty’s are going to be or at least hit the entire area so that they can’t go anywhere.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Ranma is able to do this even while in the Eva much to everyone's surprise.
  • Stress Vomit: Maya threw up after seeing Ranma Eating the Enemy
  • Sword Beam: RANMA SPECIAL MODIFIED ANTI-KAIJU TECHNIQUE! Slashwave!"
  • Take a Third Option: The Big Breasted Angel had two options when confronted by Ranma and his Laser Blade. If she tried to attack, then Ranma would no doubt have to strike back, which would likely destroy the Angel in a massive explosion. On the other hand, if it tried to run away, he'd either have to chase it down, or they'd have to wait and see what options would be available to them. Much to everyone’s surprise it decided to surrender.
  • Take That!: Ranma’s complaint about the EVA Unit not having weapons
  • The Gadfly: The JSDF project head is this to Ritsuko he makes sure that in every interview he gives he uses the term 'kaiju' to describe the Angels as he knows it irritates the hell out of her.
  • This Is Wrong on So Many Levels!: Misato had this reaction when she told her Soldiers to use all available means to destroy Asuka's panties
  • This Page Will Self-Destruct: Less self-destruct and more delete itself but Yui’s Dead Man Writing did this.
  • Understatement: Gendo’s response to watching Ritsuko Akagi try to get a blood sample from the Humanity Ensues Angel was that things had gotten odd.
Fuyutsuki: You're developing a gift for understatement
  • Undignified Death: Discussed when NERV saw Toji and Kensuke running away from the flying panties
Shigeru: I mean just think about it. If you were killed by a pair of panties, that would just suck. Even your ancestors would be ashamed of you. Even if you survived, you'd never live it down.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Many fans of Shinji 1/2 thought that Shinji would end up with Ryoga, due to all the hints but Ryoga ultimately ended up with Akari.
  • Yaoi Genre: Shinji 1/2 started out as slapstick with Shinji getting beaten on regularly by nearly everyone, then he ends up with Konatsu.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: When Ranma attempted the Hiryu Shoten Ha due to his Re-Power instead of a tornado, he lost control of the spiral of ice and fire and ended up with something like a bomb blast.
  • Younger Than They Look: While Ranma is technically 14 he still contains all of his physical qualities before the transfer so while he is chronologically fourteen, he’s closer to seventeen in physical development.
