Protagonists

    Tropes Shared by All Protagonists
  • Improbable Weapon User: Each protagonist uses a leaf to attack. Mind you, it's a leaf from a sacred tree, which is probably why it's effective against cursed and demonic enemies.

    Isaora Doralina
The protagonist of I, Dora enters the forbidden Terra Alter looking for an item rumored to be powerful enough to resurrect the dead, hoping to use it to revive her mother.

    Momo Reinol
The protagonist of II.

    Kaho Reinol
Initially appearing in II as a statue and later in III to help the player fight the Optional Boss, Kaho is the protagonist of Reverie Under the Moonlight. As a sacrifice maiden, she journeyed to the country of Karst to seek an audience with the queen.
  • Animorphism: Kaho can earn the ability to turn into a cat. In cat form she can still attack and is able to jump higher but cannot use items, shoot arrows or climb ladders. It is, however, the only way to travel through those small, tight corridors that Kaho occasionally comes across. In particular, this is necessary to upgrade the Maple Leaf in order to get the True Ending.
  • Ascended Extra: Kaho was first seen in Momodora II as one of the statues Momo needs to pray to and then in III when the heroines travel to the past to help her slay Haegok.
  • Badass Adorable: Kaho is the cutest thing, both as a girl and as a cat. And she can cleave her way through hordes of demons like they're nothing, also both as a girl and as a cat.
  • Forced Transformation: Is changed into a cat after defeating Lubella. Cotillard helps change her back, which allows Kaho to shapeshift between human and cat forms.
  • Foregone Conclusion: As she is already dead in prior games, her fate after Reverie Under the Moonlight is already known.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: As a sacrifice maiden, it's her job to take curses into herself and ensure they die with her. So purifying the Queen of Karst and her kingdom costs Kaho her life.
  • Mini Dress Of Power: Wears a short black dress.

Momodora I

    Isadora's Mom
The mother of Isadora who was sacrificed to rebuild the world.
  • Posthumous Character: As she died in the backstory as a sacrifice to rebuild the world. She returns as a ghost in the ending but stays dead.

    Underworld Queen Lamia
The Underwold Queen who lies deep in Terra Alter.
  • Big Bad: She is the one holding the spirit of Isadora's mother captive and the one threatening the world, which is why she was sacrificed in the first place.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: She doesn't really have a defined motive for antagonizing Isadora, and since only appears at the end, she gets at most a few lines.
  • One-Winged Angel: Lamia's second form is Cheeoko, a giant white ball with a friendly face and a evil red eye on its bottom that is rather reminiscent of Zero Two from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. It gets angry once its health is low.
  • Sequential Boss: First, she fights you by herself in a Tennis Boss phase. Then she turns into Cheeoko, a giant white ball creature who shoots lasers and must be hit in the red eye. The third and final phase has Cheeoko's attacks become faster and more aggresive.
  • Tennis Boss: In her first form, she will toss a giant ball at Dora that she has to reflect multiple times.

Momodora II (spoilers)

    Nanashi Reinol
The younger sister of Momo who warns her to be careful.

    Melko Kront
As for my name, it's Melko. I come from a very far away land, in search of the missing princess from my country.

An NPC who came to the KoHo shrine to look for the missing princess of Karst.

    Mai
Oh, a human? Ni hao... My name is Mai. I come from a far away land. I am here for the same reason as you. My people are threatened by the evil force coming from this temple...

An NPC in the KoHo shrine who also came to investigate the evil threatening her land.

    Princess Eri Karst
The princess of Karst. After seeing the horrible state of her kingdom, she went to KoHo shrine to get an item with miraculous power.
  • Badass Boast: She drops these when you fight her.
  • Deuteragonist: Momo is the protagonist, but Eri is the secondary focus as a boss and rival to Momo.
  • Generation Xerox: Just like her ancestor, she left the kingdom of Karst to find something that could help her ailing people.
  • Identical Granddaughter: She is the descendant of the Princess Eri from Reverie, and heavily resembles her.
  • King Incognito: When in the KoHo shrine, she disguises herself as a scarf-wearing adventurer.
  • Scarf of Asskicking
  • Two Aliases, One Character: Melko tells you that she is looking for the princess, who has disappeared. You also meet a mysterious and boastful girl with a scarf who serves as a boss twice. The second time you beat her, she reveals that she is in fact the princess.
  • Warmup Boss: She is both the first and second boss in the game.

    The New Underworld Queen
The antagonist of the game and Lamia's successor, who is threatening the world. She is actually Isadora Doralina, having been cursed by the gods for breaking into Terra Alter and trying to cheat death.
  • Big Bad: Of the second game as the one threatening to destroy the world as revenge on the gods for taking her mother away and cursing her.
  • Fighting a Shadow: The first two phases of her battle have you fighting her shadow, which she reveals when it is destroyed. Only then does she fight you herself.
  • Face–Heel Turn: She was once a normal girl who ventured into a dangerous cave to save her mother. She then became the new Underworld Queen, out to avenge her mother by destroying the world.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In the Good End, Momo is able to dispel the corruption in her and bring her back to normal. She becomes playable again in the next game.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Wants to destroy the world to get revenge on the gods for having her mother sacrificed and cursing her.
  • Rogue Protagonist: The heroine of the original game, she was cursed and became the new Underworld Queen.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Her loving mother was killed as a sacrifice to rebuild the world, and though she tried to resurrect her, she ultimately failed, instead getting cursed by the gods for her disobedience. Enraged, she decided to destroy the world as revenge against the gods.

Momodora III

NPCs

    Melilot Kront
A Kohonese girl? I can't believe it! It's a pleasure, Momo!

The younger sister of Melko and a recurring NPC. She traveled to KoHo to do research on it, but is very anxious about being lost in KoHo and longs for home.

    Mariel
I'm trying to save my siblings! They were taken away from us, and sent to a cursed place.

A girl who is searching for her kidnapped siblings.

Bosses

    Rell the Goddess of Death
The one responsible for the monster attack on Momo and Dora's village.
  • An Ice Person: She uses ice spells to fight.
  • Big Bad: She is behind the monsters attacking Momo and Dora's village.
  • Everybody Hates Hades: The Big Bad is a death goddess who sends monsters to terrorize people for fun.
  • Evil Is Deathly Cold: As befitting a goddess of death, she has ice powers and lives in a realm of ice.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Her purple hair signifies her position as a death deity.
  • It Amused Me: According to her pre-battle speech, her entire motive for sending monsters against innocent people was for fun.
  • Sequential Boss: As is tradition, she has three phases. Her first phase has her move around and use spells, while in her second phase she floats stationary in the air and shoots projectiles. Her final phase is similar to her first, but now she carries a Sinister Scythe.

    Prim Doralina
The guardian and boss of the Ishilith Shrine and a distant relative of Isadora.
  • Bullfight Boss: Her main attack is to charge at you and slash with her bunny spear.
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy: She is supposed to guard the Fish Key, but is sleeping when you get there. She only fights you when she wakes up.
  • Warmup Boss: The first boss in the game and an easy boss who only attacks with one combo.

    Fishgod Peishe
The boss of Old Madryn. He is a big green fish with a crown.
  • King Mook: To the fish enemies of Old Madryn.

    Alka and Polka Arabella
A pair of witches, fought as the boss of Dim Hideout.
  • Dual Boss: They both fight you together.
  • Turns Red: Killing one of them angers the other and buffs their spells.
  • Wicked Witch: They work for the Big Bad Rell and try to kill the heroines.

    Bellkeeper Potelia
The guardian and boss of the Bellflower Garden.
  • Hero Antagonist: She only fights the heroines under the misapprehension that they are a threat to her garden. Once that is cleared up, she relents.
  • Lone Wolf Boss: She is not affiliated with Rell- she just attacks you out of a desire to protect her garden.

    Haegok
The boss of the short Distortion in Time level. He is a monster who destroyed Kaho's village.
  • Optional Boss: He is fought in the secret Distortion in Time level.

    Bakrog Demon
The boss of Artemisia's Grave.
  • King Mook: To the Bakman enemies.
  • Mighty Glacier: It hits hard thanks to the giant hammer it carries, but walks very slow.

    Cashias
The boss of Hell aside from Rell herself and the one guarding her hideout.

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight

NPCs

    Cath
A knightess of Karst.

    Askorn
An NPC the player finds outside of Karst City. He is looking for his wife.
  • Dead All Along: As the player will find if they talk to him in the Subterranean Grave, has actually been dead the whole time and so is the wife he went to look for in Karst. Ghosts of the dead can roam the world of the living normally thanks to the curse choking the land. Given their similar designs, it's possible the various shopkeepers are the same.
  • Together in Death: He finds the grave of his wife and joins her there.

    Cotillard
A witch who lives in the Forlorn Monastery.
  • Crazy Cat Lady: Subverted. Cotillard may have a small army of cats, but she is clearly one of the sanest people remaining in Karst.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She is a witch hiding in a dark area of the Forlorn Monastery and can make her eyes glow red, but does not antagonize Kaho and is actually helpful to her.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Implied, as the player can find her in a room full of cats. Either that or a benign Crazy Cat Lady.

    Princess Eri Karst
The princess of Karst and an ancestor of the Eri from Momodora II.
  • King Incognito: It's revealed the girl in shorts and a bra who shows up in a few places may in fact be Eri, the Princess of Karst, as Kaho can receive an item from said character that is said to be given only to infants descended from the royal bloodline, and she outright calls herself Eri.

Bosses

    The Accurst Queen of Karst
Corrupted by great greed, the Queen became insane and attempted to mend the world of the living and the world of the dead.

The queen of the country, who made a Deal with the Devil and has now become monstrous and the cause of Karst's deplorable state. She is the boss of Karst Castle and drops the Birthstone if beaten without taking damage.

  • Background Boss: In her final form.
  • Big Bad: She is the source of the curse afflicting Karst.
  • Deal with the Devil: Cotillard states that the Queen's condition is the result of a pact with the Underworld and that her evil may not be of her own will.
  • Fallen Hero: The Queen used to be a good and noble ruler. Some residents of Karst are unable to come to terms with the fact that those days are long gone.
  • Fisher King: When the Queen became corrupted, her entire kingdom became infested by her evil. And then it started spreading even further...
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: The Big Bad is the possessed Queen of Karst.
  • Hades Shaded: The Queen of Karst, in stark contrast to Lubella, has her whole skin turned pitch-black due to the powerful corruption enveloping her. It fades away once Kaho purifies her in the True Ending.
  • One-Winged Angel: Her final form is a giant humanoid ghost heavily resembling Haegok from Momodora III and with even more powerful versions of her previous attacks.
  • Power Floats: Constantly hovering around during her fight.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her red eyes symbolize her corruption by demonic forces. Once she is purified, she loses them.
  • Silent Antagonist: She never once speaks, unlike the other Big Bad characters.
  • Taking You with Me: In the Downer Ending, she does this to Kaho when the latter is unable to purge the Queen's corruption. On the other hand, in the True Ending, Kaho does it to the Queen's corruption instead.

    Arthopod Demon Edea
Edea was a sinner who betrayed her own people. For such acts, she was purged, and her body sent to a sacred grove, far from home.

A demon who serves as the boss of the Sacred Ordalia Grove. She is said to have been a traitor to her people and was "purged". She drops Edea's Pearl if beaten without taking damage.

  • Creepy Centipedes: She is a giant centipede demon.
  • Poisonous Person: Edea uses poison attacks. If you kill her without taking any hits, she also drops a pearl that coats your arrows in poison.
  • Taken for Granite: When beaten, she turns into stone.
  • Turns Red: Edea herself doesn't gain any new attacks or change patterns, but the floor immediately in front of the barrier blocking the entrance to the boss arena begins expelling poison gas periodically once she gets low on health, towards which Edea attempts to push you.
  • Warmup Boss: The first boss in Reverie and one with simple attack patterns.

    Moka
A Bakman servant of Lubella and one of the bosses of Karst City.
  • The Dragon: He is Lueblla's servant.
  • Trick Boss: He isn't too much of a threat. After some fighting, Lubella swoops in as the real boss.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The last we see of him is falling into the water to allow Lubella to fight you instead. He may have drowned, but there is no confirmation of this.

Lubella Dim, the Witch of Decay
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lubella_dim_witch_of_decay.png
Lubella
A giant undead witch and one of the bosses of Karst City, as well as the boss of Whiteleaf Memorial Park. She drops the Bakman Patch and Torn Branch if beaten without taking damage.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: She is a giantess large enough that only her head, shoulders, and bust can fit on-screen.
  • Bad Boss: Lubella has minions who search for sources of life force for her to take, but she has little concern for them.
  • Bait-and-Switch Boss: Her first battle starts off with Kaho against her underling Moka. Once Moka gets to half-health, the floor bursts, dropping Kaho into Lubella's arena.
  • Evil Laugh: Cackles in a high-pitched voice throughout her boss fight.
  • Evil Overlooker: In both of the boxarts, she can be seen menacingly towering over the other characters. Oddly, she is not the Big Bad- the actual villain, the Accurst Queen, is nowhere to be seen.
  • Horned Humanoid: Has a pair of branching red antlers.
  • Jagged Mouth: To signify her villainy.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Her massive boobs and ample cleavage make her a character much more sexualized than the others.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: Lubella strikes the pose when she laughs at you during her boss fight.
  • Our Liches Are Different: She is a horned giantess who wants to take over the throne of Karst.
  • Recurring Boss: Lubella is fought twice, once in Karst City (where she teleports away after the battle) and then in Whiteleaf Memorial Park (where her reaction implies that she's dead for good).
  • Taking You with Me: A milder example - after Kaho kills Lubella for good, she explodes and knocks Kaho out. When the priestess wakes up, she is in a cage and transformed into the shape of a cat. Whether this was Lubella's intention or Wild Magic being uncontrollably released as she died is unknown.
  • Undeathly Pallor: Lubella has grey skin.

    The Knight
A knight who serves as one of the bosses of Karst City.
  • Expy: Of Cashias from Momodora III, as they even have a similar attack pattern.
  • No Name Given: Unlike the other bosses, they do not have a name or health meter.

    Pardoner Fennel
The inquisitor of the Esselin cult and boss of the Forlorn Monastery. She is paranoid and attacks Kaho, thinking that she is a servant of the queen. She drops the Tainted Missive if beaten without taking damage.
  • Flash Step
  • Magic Knight: Though something closer to a sister or a priestess than a knight, she uses both a sword and magic to fight.
  • Mirror Boss: Like Kaho, she's an agile fighter who mixes sword skills with long range fire (in her case, with lightning magic) and is also a member of a religious group, her goals driven by her faith. She also serves as a Foil of sorts to Kaho, as Fennel has given in to her hatred and fear to view everyone outside of her convent's faithful as potential enemies and spies in service of the Queen, while Kaho is cordial and open to others unless she is attacked. The two ironically come to blows due to Fennel's paranoia, despite the fact that Kaho could have been Fennel's single greatest ally in purging the very evil she reviled.
  • Knight Templar: She and her fellow Esselin followers are depicted as this according to the Tainted Missive, and indeed she does not live up to her name in the slightest, attacking Kaho on sight just because she suspects she might be allied to the Queen. Had she let Kaho say a single word in her defense, she would've discovered that they have the exact same goal.
The followers of Esselin preach forgiveness, but their thoughts are spiteful and filled with hatred.
  • The Paranoiac: She views everyone who is not part of the Esselin cult as a follower of the Queen and a threat, and attacks Kaho for that reason.
  • Shock and Awe: Can summon lightning to rain down as an attack.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: A graceful lady and a member of the monastery, yet quite skillful with a blade and willing put down anyone who poses a threat to her covenant and faith.
  • Turns Red: Pardoner Fennel is perhaps the most visible example. Anytime, once, after she loses around a third of her health, she will cause a brief lull in the fighting where swipes her hand across her blade, with an eerie glow following (she is invincible during this, so you can't interrupt her or take advantage to sneak some damage in). This is to show that she's not holding back anymore. She will now attack more aggressively, add a Finishing Move to her standard combo (which both increases her travel distance and tracks your position) and all her sword-based moves receive a huge power boost (with said Finishing Move being one of the most damaging moves in the game).
  • Waif-Fu: She stands out from the other human bosses with her fast and graceful fighting style, featuring skyward leaps, spins, twirls and much backflipping, while still hitting like a damn truck.

    Derelict Frida
Frida, deemed worthless, was thrown to the tombs underneath the capital. It's hardly possible to tell if it ever took the form of a human, or something else...

A tall, mosquito-like shadow humanoid who serves as the boss of the Subterranean Grave. It drops the Sparse Thread if beaten without taking damage.

  • Ambiguously Human: The description for the Sparse Thread states that it is difficult to determine if this tall, shadow-like humanoid mosquito was ever human or something else entirely.
  • Flunky Boss: She occasionally summons two ghost dog mooks by her sides.

    Heretical Arsonist
A pyromaniac woman who serves as the boss of the Cinder Chambers. She drops the Pocket Incensory if beaten without taking damage.
  • The Heretic: Her name suggests this.
  • Pyromaniac: Her main power is fire, and her name suggests that she is a heretic who loves to burn things.
  • Weapon Specialization: She will hit you with a whip if you get too close to her.

    Archpriestess Choir
The archpriestess of the Esselin cult and a secret boss. She is the older sister of Pardoner Fennel. Unbeknownst to Fennel, she is actually a spy for the Accurst Queen. She drops the Bloodstained Tissue if beaten without taking damage.
  • Dirty Coward: According to the description for the Bloodstained Tissue, she became a spy for the Accurst Queen to save herself from the Queen's wrath.
  • The Mole: She actively serves the demon-possessed Accurst Queen while still keeping up a facade of faith.
  • Optional Boss: Giving her the soft tissue item allows her to be fought.
  • Pose of Supplication: Choir collapses and begins praying to her god when low on health. Once the final blow is struck, she dies in despair while repeatedly punching the floor.
  • Power Floats
  • Turns Red: Choir gains a Desperation Attack once she hits half health.

    Duchess Lupiar
The Duchess of Karst in service of the Accurst Queen and one of two bosses of the Royal Pinachotheca. She drops the Heavy Arrows if beaten without taking damage.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: She is a Duchess who serves the Big Bad Accurst Queen.
  • Barefisted Monk: Lupiar, perhaps to further contrast Cath.
  • Co-Dragons: She and Royal Huntress Magnolia are the highest-ranked servants of the Accurst Queen.
  • Dual Boss: The boss battle against Duchess Lupiar and Royal Hunter Magnolia is half-this, half-Sequential Boss. You fight Lupiar on the ground while Magnolia periodically shoots arrows from a balcony, so while you are technically fighting both at once, you can only damage Lupiar. Once she dies, Magnolia drops down to the ground and attempts to stab you to death with her hunting knife.

    Royal Huntress Magnolia
The Royal Huntress in service of Duchess Lupiar and the Accurst Queen, and one of two bosses of the Royal Pinachotheca. She was raised in the woods until she joined the Karst order of knights. She drops the Heavy Arrows if beaten without taking Damage.
  • Co-Dragons: She and Duchess Lupiar are the highest-ranked servants of the Accurst Queen.

    The Owl
A humanoid owl who serves as the boss of Karst Castle before the Accurst Queen.
