    Guilmon
"Takatomon... I need a new box."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Guilmon_1336.gif

Quite literally a fan character drawn and named by Takato and brought to life. A red dinosaur-like Digimon who is bigger than a human, very powerful, very innocent, and completely lovable. Has a bit of trouble distinguishing between humans, animals, and Digimon.

  • Fresh: Jyarimon, only seen in the WonderSwan games.
  • In-Training: Gigimon, a small creature resembling a simplified version of Guilmon's head with legs.
  • Rookie: Guilmon, his primary form.
  • Champion: Growlmon (Growmon), similar to Guilmon but taller and with a mane of white hair.
  • Ultimate: WarGrowlmon (MegaloGrowmon), a giant dinosaur with a robotic upper half, akin to Adventure's MetalGreymon.
  • Mega: Megidramon, this series' equivalent to SkullGreymon, only much, MUCH, Worse.
  • Biomerge-Mega: Gallantmon (Dukemon), an imposing white knight with a red cape. Achieved by Bio-Merging with Takato.
    • Mode Change: Gallantmon Crimson Mode, which is Gallantmon with red armor and several angelic wings instead of a cape.

Voiced by: Masako Nozawa (JP), Steve Blum (Gallantmon and Gallantmon Crimson Mode shared with Brian Beacock) (EN), Pepe Carabias (Spain), Mariana Gómez (Latin America, as Guilmon), Luis Tenorio (Latin America, as Growlmon, WarGrowlmon and MegiDramon), Manuel Campuzano and Mauricio Valverde (Latin America, as Gallantmon)

  • All Animals Are Dogs: He acts more like a puppy than a digital dinosaur.
  • Almighty Idiot: Megidramon. While it's very powerful, it also has very little intelligence and it threatens to destroy not only the Digital World but also the real world by merely existing!
  • Ambiguous Robot: Gallantmon looks like a mecha, but he's only ever identified as a Holy Knight type Digimon.
  • Art Initiates Life: Rather than being an existing Digimon who chose to join a human, Guilmon was created when Takato's Digivice scanned his hand-drawn fan art.
  • Ascended Fanon: In-universe, being thought up by Takato. This extends to his Growlmon and WarGrowlmon forms.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: His speech as Gallantmon in the original Japanese is made of this, akin to a samurai or a warrior serving a lord in general, befitting his design.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: When not fighting, he can be distracted by a lot of things.
  • Badass Adorable: He's a child-sized cartoony therapod, but is the most powerful of the three main Digimon, with a kill record that includes six of the twelve Devas in his higher forms. (In contrast, none of his allies - or Beelzemon, during his Heel period - got to finish off more than one Deva.)
  • Badass Cape: Gallantmon has a flowing crimson cape, befitting his nature as a draconic knight. He also used it to put out a fire he walked out of.
  • Balloon Belly: Whenever he eats too much his stomach bulges comedically.
  • Barely-Changed Dub Name: Growmon is just one letter off from Growlmon. Justified, since both names derive from the English word 'Growl'.
  • Beast of the Apocalypse: His corrupted Mega form, Megidramon. In this form, Guilmon loses all restraint and conscious thought, fully unleashing the power of the Digital Hazard in his rampage. It risks collapsing the entire Digital World for as long as it exists.
  • The Berserker: True to his nature as a viral Combat Species, Guilmon is initially extremely aggressive and charges into battle focused solely on attacking. In his first few battles, his instinctive bloodlust rendered him blind to everything but the opponent until Takato snapped him out of it. This becomes more prominent as he Digivolves, with Takato explicitly worrying about how Guilmon seems to become uniquely feral the more powerful he gets. This hits its most extreme point when he dark digivolves to Megidramon, who essentially is an embodiment of uncontrollable rage. He gains control over it though with time, and completely sheds this tendency as Gallantmon.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: The most childlike of all the digimons but is a very ferocious fighter. Also, he ended up as the most powerful.
  • Big Eater: He's always hungry.
  • Bishōnen Line: His forms get steadily more monstrous and complex until eventually he becomes Gallantmon, a minimalist Knight in Shining Armor with barely any resemblance to his previous forms. Justified since Gallantmon is not a natural evolution but a fusion with Takato... as well as the culmination of Takato's Character Arc of setting aside what he thinks is cool in order to become genuinely heroic.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: Growlmon, WarGrowlmon, and Megidramon all have arm-blades that get larger with each Digivolution. Gallantmon has a Jousting Lance below the shoulder.
  • Blood Knight: While not quite to Renamon's initial extent, as a Virus-type Combat Species, Guilmon is usually eager for battle, and his reaction to enemy Digimon showing up is to snarl in anticipation of fighting them.
  • Body Horror: As Megidramon, it has a second mouth that opens its nasal cavity.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: When Guilmon gets on the motorcycle and begins to run over everything in his path. Was brought out of it by Leomon, who beaned him over the head with the flat of his sword.
  • Breath Weapon: Most of his forms can spit a powerful blast of flames.
  • Character Development: Necessary because he was quite literally newborn at the start of the series. He never quite gets out of his child-like nature, but does gain a surprising degree of wisdom.
  • Chest Blaster: WarGrowlmon's Atomic Blaster is fired from his chest.
  • Chest Insignia: The Digital Hazard Symbol, which signifies his potential to cause cataclysmic destruction.
  • Children Are Innocent: A nonhuman example, but still fits the trope since he's practically a newborn. All the other partner digimon spent their lives in the brutal Digital World where they fought and killed to survive before meeting their partners. Guilmon was exempt from this and met Takato as soon as he hatched, leaving him a complete innocent.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: Despite his immense power (to put this into perspective, officially he's one of four dragon-god Digimon, along with Azulongmon), Megidramon is rather easily brought down by Beelzemon, his rage-induced feral state rendering him not as effective a fighter as he could have been.
  • Contrasting Sequel Protagonist: Unlike other main digimon, Guilmon is literally a newborn digimon in the beginning of the series, and knows very little about himself or the world, contrast with Agumon and Veemon, the previous two main digimon who served as Mr. Exposition at least at some point or another. Guilmon is also unusually large for a Rookie level digimon (2-3 times the size of most other rookies), which creates issues with hiding him that previous partnered digimon only had marginal trouble with.
  • Cool Helmet: Gallantmon’s helmet has an adorable Guilmon figure on it.
  • Cool Sword: Gallantmon Crimson Mode's Blutgang looks like it's made of purple fire.
  • Crossdressing Voices: In the Japanese version, per typical.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Guilmon may act immature, but all bets are off when in a fight, especially after evolutions.
  • Cumbersome Claws: The main characters play rock-paper-scissors, with a chagrined Guilmon always losing because his long claws prevent him from playing anything besides paper.
  • Cyborg: WarGrowlmon and Megidramon have armor made of Chrome Digizoid, the strongest metal in the Digital World.
  • Darker and Edgier: He was designed by Takato to be this to Agumon.
  • Dark Is Evil: Megidramon, though Guilmon was at one point able to channel his power to protect Takato, to no ill effect.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: For one, Growlmon is addressed as being a "Demon Dragon" type. Also, Guilmon himself, along with his entire evolutionary line, is of the Virus attribute, which is generally associated with villains in the series (though an exception already existed previously with Wormmon). This has some significance considering Guilmon and his line feature the Digital Hazard Symbol, and his corrupted Mega form can cause a meltdown of reality for merely existing. This particular Guilmon is the kindest and most gentle member of his team.
  • Deadly Upgrade: Megidramon. Most villains would take an entire game/series/film to deploy their plan to destroy the world. Megidramon? It exists, shines red, and the entire universe (both digital and real) starts being destroyed.
  • Dinosaurs Are Dragons: Unlike most cases of this trope, he resembles a mix between a dragon and a dinosaur.
  • Diverging Evolutionary Phases: While Gallantmon is his default Mega Level form, he also Dark-Digivolves into Megidramon from Takato's rage after Beelzemon kills Leomon.
  • Draconic Abomination: Megidramon, his Mega form, is an Eldritch Abomination that is very recognizably dragonlike and so powerful that he destabilizes the existence of the Digital World by simply existing.
  • Dragon Knight: Gallantmon's helmet has Guilmon's dragon-like head attached to his Cool Helmet.
  • Dragons Are Demonic: Guilmon and most of his evolutions are Virus Type Digimon that resemble draconic therapod dinosaurs, and As Growlmon he is even categorized as a "Demon Dragon". Upon extreme anger of Takato over the death of Leomon at Belzemon's hands, he transforms his partner Guilmon into Megidramon. His powers are so acute and massive that he causes the Digital World to slowly crumble around him simply by existing. Fortunately, he's calmed down before he could destroy everything.
  • Dumb Muscle: Very childlike, but is the strongest of the main three Digimon. In his fight with Renamon, he was beating her despite Rika using a modify card.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: Through the attributes assigned to Digimon, Guilmon is a Virus type.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Gallantmon Crimson Mode, which gives him wings and further amplifies his power.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: He can sense hostile Digimon, and usually reacts by snarling.
  • Expy: An In-Universe example. Takato was specifically thinking "Agumon, but better" when designing Guilmon, so his entire evolutionary line (minus Crimson Mode) has many parallels with Agumon's. Human child-sized dinosaur (Rookie), proper-sized Dinosaur (Champion), proper-sized dinosaur with weapons attached (Ultimate), humanoid warrior (Mega). He even has a dark evolution, though that was unintentional.
    • According to Word Of God, the Guilmon evolutionary line was also one of the Godzilla expies.
    • You could even say the line is a homage to the typical "dragon-and-knight" medieval imagery, since he evolves from the classic design of a terrifying dragon to a gallant (heh) Knight in Shining Armor, ready to save his lady love (Jeri) in the process.
  • The Faceless: Gallantmon's face is never seen aside from his yellow eyes that resemble his previous forms.
  • Fiery Salamander: Like Agumon, he's a fire-breathing reptilian Digimon.
  • Flight: WarGrowlmon and Gallantmon Crimson Mode can fly, and presumably Megidramon can as well.
  • Friendly Fireproof: Gallantmon Crimson Mode's Quo Vadis attack is powerful enough to clear an entire city, without destroying the city.
  • Gentle Giant: Except when berserk, Guilmon in all his forms is child-like.
  • Good Wears White: As Gallantmon he wears white and red armor.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: Megidramon has tattered orange bat wings, while Gallantmon Crimson Mode has feathery white angel ones.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: He's literally a newborn at the start of the series and starts out with the behavioral mannerisms of a curious toddler, but he is also the most powerful of the three main Digimon.
  • Hard Head: When Guilmon was possessed by the motorcycle and Leomon has to knock him off with the blunt edge of his sword.
  • Hellish Pupils: His pupils narrow into vertical slits whenever he goes feral during a fight or is anticipating battle.
  • Help, I'm Stuck!: When Guilmon digivolves to Growlmon for the first time, he has extreme difficulty devolving back to Guilmon. Takato, completely unsure of what to do with him at first but desperate to get him away from prying eyes, attempts to force Growlmon back into the cage he's been hiding in as Guilmon, only for Growlmon to get stuck.
  • Horseback Heroism: Gallantmon with Grani.
  • Hulk Speak: He started like this as a newborn, but soon became more articulate.
  • Jousting Lance: Gallantmon's Gram and Crimson Mode's Gungnir.
  • Kiai: Most notably WarGrowlmon, the majority of whose dialogue consists of growls.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Gallantmon is a lance-wielding knight.
  • Laser Blade: Gallantmon Crimson Mode's Gungnir.
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: He's crimson in coloration and is physically the strongest of the main three Digimon.
  • Light 'em Up: As Gallantmon, and even more so as Crimson Mode.
  • Light Is Good: Gallantmon is a Holy Paladin Digimon.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: The fact that it can fire energy beams certainly helps. FINAL... ELYSIAN!!!
  • Made of Iron: Guilmon's entire line is abnormally durable. As a Rookie he was able to No-Sell Renamon's Diamond Storm, this attack defeated Champion level Digimon. Growlmon survived being mauled on by Mihiramon, half of Growlmon's face and arm were devoured as seen in the mental communication he and Takato were having. WarGrowlmon was able to No-Sell Beelzemon's Double Impact when he and Takato were rage induced from witnessing Leomon's death, Double Impact defeated Rapidmon in one shot. Gallantmon endured all of Zhuqiaomon's attacks without slowing down before their battle was stopped by Azulongmon.
  • Man Bites Man: He's not afraid of using his fangs in combat, and as Megidramon he attempted to eat Beelzemon.
  • Manchild: Justified, since he starts out the series as essentially a newborn in a grown body. Even after he gets some Character Development, he retains a child-like mentality. This trope goes further with Growlmon who is much larger than Guilmon, but behaves just as childishly.
  • Meaningful Name: The name of his wicked Mega form, Megidramon, is derived from Megiddo, the hill on which the last battle of good and evil is prophesied to take place.
  • No Range Like Point-Blank Range: As WarGrowlmon, he often uses Atomic Blaster this way.
  • No-Sell: Renamon's Diamond Storm, which is capable of shredding Champion-level Digimon, does nothing to him as a Rookie. Even with his attribute advantage over her, this is impressive.
  • Not Quite Flight: Gallantmon's ability to fly can be inconsistent, but he eventually takes to aerial battles by riding Grani before gaining Crimson Mode grants him fully flight.
  • Olympus Mons: Both of his Mega forms are part of legendary Digimon groups:
    • Megidramon is a very dark take on this. He's named after the valley of Armageddon, destabilizes the Digital World just by existing, and is completely uncontrollable.
    • Takato becomes one as Gallantmon and his Crimson Mode, these are however unambiguously heroic.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Growlmon and Megidramon are most obviously demonic, but Guilmon's whole evolution line, aside from Gallantmon, are referred to as Demon Dragons.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Excepting Gallantmon and his mode change, the Guilmon line resembles a far more draconic take on the Agumon line. Even Gallantmon has dragon features on his armor. Megidramon is a far more monstrous dragon.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Guilmon was born with the Digital Hazard sign on his chest, which signifies a digimon with the potential to cause mass destruction if corrupted. The symbol was not present on Takato's original drawing of him, but is present on all of his evolution stages. For most of the series this is completely irrelevant and never even commented upon... until Guilmon dark digivolves to Megidramon and starts to cause a dimensional meltdown in the digital world simply for existing. Despite this there is zero elaboration or explanation for why the symbol manifested on Guilmon in the first place.
  • Oxymoronic Being: Gallantmon is a Virus digimon but also a Holy Knight, described as a "living contradiction".
  • The Paladin: Gallantmon is basically a white knight digimon.
  • Playing with Fire: All of his forms, save Gallantmon, use fire-based attacks.
  • Poor, Predictable Rock: The fact that he can't flex his claws out of the paper position gets exploited against him, in a brief game of rock, paper, scissors.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Crimson Mode has glowing angelic wings, not to mention that Takato owns a modify card that when used allows Guilmon to grow Angemon's energy wings.
  • Power-Up Letdown: Most of Megidramon's threat comes from his mere presence, more than any concious act. He spends most of his time on-screen grappling with Beelzemon, and then when Beelzemon gets a mild upgrade from Makuramon is beaten senseless. Justified because it's implied that Takato was regretting rather than just letting Megidramon do his own thing — had Takato not restrained himself Beelzemon would be offed right there and now.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Megidramon has red eyes, emphasizing his extremely dangerous nature.
  • Red Is Heroic: His hide is bright red and his partner is The Hero.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Takato eventually figures out that he can take him on the street by claiming that he's just some guy in really good cosplay. It stops working after the Deva show up, though.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Even Steve Blum admitted Guilmon was way too cute, and Jeri thinks he's cute as well. Not so much in looks, but his personality makes up for it.
  • The Rival:
    • To Renamon in the beginning (as Guilmon), unintentional since he was the first Digimon Renamon failed to take down.
    • To Impmon as Guilmon, once he figures out the former had made a fool out of him. To Beelzemon, as Gallantmon.
  • Rule of Cool: Guilmon and Growlmon's designs are based on Takato's idea of having a partner that is as strong and cool as possible. It's deconstructed, as Takato doesn't think about the drawbacks of his final designs. Both Guilmon and Growlmon are way too big for their own good (although, Growlmon appears to be ExVeemon's size rather than Greymon's), which makes hiding them difficult or impossible. Similarly, his choice of making Guilmon's evolution line Virus types, which plays a factor in Guilmon's occasional feral states and results in him becoming Megidramon when he's completely unrestrained.
  • Sanity Has Advantages: Megidramon is as powerful as Gallantmon, if not more, but proves far less effective than its knightly counterpart thanks to its near-mindlessness. It loses to Beelzemon because it spent the entire battle trying to eat him in its animalistic rage while Gallantmon succeeded because he was clear-headed enough to apply his strength rationally.
  • Ship Tease: In the American dub, Terriermon teases him about possibly liking Renamon.
Terriermon: "Renamon and Guilmon, sittin' in a tree!"
  • Simple-Minded Wisdom: Guilmon eventually grows into this, unwittingly dispensing meaningful advice.
  • Skilled, but Naive: Guilmon was born with an instinctive grasp of combat and an abnormally powerful body for a fresh Rookie, but is still mentally a toddler with no grasp of the the physical or digital world. This caused no end of problems early on for his tamer.
  • The Slow Walk: As Gallantmon (with the background in flames).
  • Snake People: Megidramon lacks legs, but has arms and wings with a serpentine lower body.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Megidramon has spiked pauldrons and arm-blades.
  • Super Mode: Gallantmon Crimson Mode is by far the strongest Digimon on the Tamers' side. Possibly the strongest one human-Digimon combination in the entire franchise.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: He has yellow irises, emphasizing his nature as a demonic dragon-type Digimon.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Megidramon, his demonic corrupted Mega form. It's powerful enough to erode reality just by existing, but as intelligent as a rabid dog.
  • Super Spit: Megidramon's drool is corrosive.
  • Sword Beam: Royal Saber and Quo Vadis.
  • Tap on the Head: This is the only way that Leomon can free Guilmon from a demonic motorcycle. Justified due to the sheer toughness of his hide and Leomon intentionally holding back from a lethal strike.
  • Third-Person Person: Always refers to himself in the third person, one sign in Japanese speech showing immaturity. It carries throughout all his forms, but takes on a different form as Gallantmon, but only in Japanese, where his specific pronoun, kono Dukemonnote  implies the humility of a servant, which fits with his above speech pattern.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Bread. Later on, Guilmon bread, which is baked in the shape of his head. The dub adds a love of peanut butter on top of that.
  • Trash Talk: When in the heat of battle, he's not above mocking his opponents.
  • Tunnel King: He's very adept at burrowing.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Guilmon when he first comes to be. His first fight was against the battle-hardened Renamon, who had trounced other digimon, some even Champion-level ones. He managed to fight her to a standstill with nothing but his durability and instincts.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Guilmon's line shows increases in strength and stamina when enraged. This reaches its apex with his evolution to Megidramon.
  • Verbal Tic:
    • "-giru" in the Japanese version.
    • The English version might be calling Takato "Takatomon", but once Takato tells him to stop, he does.
  • Vocal Dissonance: In both Japanese and English, Guilmon keeps his childlike voice throughout his entire Digivolutionary line, even as he becomes a giant, ferocious monster and then an armored knight. The Japanese version in particular gives him the same voice actress and similar delivery to Son Goku at various stages in his life, with Dukemon (like Super Saiyan Goku) having the best approximation of a deep, commanding male voice Masako Nozawa can muster.
  • Walking Wasteland: Megidramon's very existence destabilizes the Digital World.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Gallantmon's Final Elysian (Shield of the Just in English versions) fires a beam of energy from his shield.
  • Winged Humanoid: Gallantmon gains ten glowing energy wings in Crimson Mode.

    Terriermon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/TerriermonTamers_6881.gif
"Moumantai~"

Henry's partner. A pretty mild mon, but initially has trouble controlling himself when he Digivolves. Resembles a plush toy with big, floppy, ears.

His digivolutions are as follows:

  • Fresh: Zerimon, only seen in the WonderSwan games.
  • In-Training: Gummymon, a green blob-like Digimon with a horn.
  • Rookie: Terriermon, his default form.
  • Champion: Gargomon (Galgomon), a bipedal terrier wearing jeans and has miniguns for hands
  • Ultimate: Rapidmon, a giant green flying cyborg beast man with long ears.
  • Biomerge-Mega: MegaGargomon (SaintGalgomon), a Humongous Mecha with a dog-like face. Achieved by Bio-Merging with Henry.

Voiced by: Aoi Tada (JP), Mona Marshall (MegaGargomon shared with Dave Wittenberg) (EN), Carolina Tak (Spain), Linda Herold (Latin America)

  • Adaptation Species Change: Like in his previous appearance, the dub changes him from a dog to a bunny, despite his name being Terriermon. However, his resemblance to both species is lampshaded by Impmon in the dub, who at least once calls him a 'dog-eared bunny'.
  • Arm Cannon: His evolutions have firearms attached to his arms.
  • Ax-Crazy: He becomes this whenever he digivolves at first.
  • Badass Adorable: Terriermon are designated as a "Combat Species": a class of Digimon noted for abnormally high natural aptitude for combat. This particular one demonstrates that power and ferocity in all his battles despite being easily able to pass as a plush toy.
  • Badass Bandolier: Gargomon dramatically whips one around his torso and snaps it in place as the end point of his evolution. Save for this, Gargomon would be completely topless. It appears to be purely decorative as at no point does he attempt to use it to reload his gun arms.
  • Barely-Changed Dub Name: Gargomon is a corruption of their original name, Galgomon.
  • Big Eater: To wit: "Buns and beans and sauerkraut / I'm gonna eat 'til I pass out!"
  • The Big Guy:
    • Subverted and played straight; in terms of power, all three bio-merge Megas are roughly equal. In terms of size? The other two are literally as big as his head.
    • Most definitely subverted when they're all in Rookie form. He's actually small enough to pretend to be a novelty animal backpack.
  • Blood Knight: He loves a good fight, much to his partner's annoyance.
  • Blow You Away: As a rookie he fights by creating tornados.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He's the rowdiest of the main digimon and the one who is most open to admitting that he enjoys battle for its own sake.
  • Brutal Honesty: His first line towards Takato is pointing out how bad a Tamer he is for losing his Digimon. He never hesitates to speak his mind whenever, wherever and to whoever he feels like – normally he doesn’t mean any harm, but just can't seem to stop himself from saying something out of place, be it a quip he thinks is amusing, or an unintentionally insulting observation. All very possibly the result of being a wild Digimon, fighting by the rules of survival of the fittest in the Digital World before meeting Henry.
  • Canis Major: MegaGargomon, his most powerful form, has a dog-like appearance and is the size of a small skyscraper.
  • Catchphrase: "Moumantai!", which is Cantonese for "Don't worry!" or "No problem!", which he probably picked up off Henry's family since he's Half-Chinese. Terriermon tends to use it whenever something is even remotely tense even when everyone should be serious, which the others find somewhat annoying at times. But when someone else uses it: "That's a really annoying thing to say!"
  • Combat Pragmatist: He tends to be the first to suggest these kind of tactics. His suggestion for dealing with IceDevimon? "A kick in the pants."
  • Deadpan Snarker: The snarkiest of the Tamers cast Digimon and probably the snarkiest partner Digimon in the entire franchise.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: He (and his evolutions) are of the Vaccine attribute.
  • Gatling Good: Gargomon has two gatling guns instead of hands.
  • Gentle Giant: He becomes the tallest and largest of all the digimons in his final form.
  • Guns Akimbo: His evolutions will have both of his arms attached with Arm Cannons.
  • The Gunslinger: The entire point of his evolutionary line.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Gargomon wears pants and a bandolier. That’s it.
  • Happy Dance: After Henry orders him not to absorb Gorillamon's data, he at least wants to do a happy dance.
  • Head Pet: Tends to sit on Henry's head or shoulder. Since he's pretending to be a stuffed animal, this results into some rather amusing stares from people Henry walks past.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Terriermon simply has to stand perfectly still, making him look like a normal plushie doll.
  • Humongous Mecha: MegaGargomon's design and appearance are based on this concept. His debut battle even has him taking on Zhuqiaomon in what can be considered a Mecha Vs Beast battle.
  • I Am Not Weasel: In the dub Rika often refers to him as a rabbit, but judging from his name and his later evolutions he's pretty clearly supposed to be a dog.
  • Irony: Terriermon is the tiniest of the main rookie digimon, but becomes the biggest of the Digimon partners in their final stage.
  • Jive Turkey: In the English dub, Terriermon frequently uses modern slang.
Lopmon: [To Zhuqiaomon] My sovereign, your generosity and wisdom are without bounds! Thank you!
Terriermon: [Hops in] Thanks, Schuster! It's been real!
  • I Know Kung Fu: MegaGargomon inherits Henry’s martial arts skills. Combined with his size and great strength, he can dominate most opponents in close combat. Zhuqiaomon got a very clear demonstration of this.
  • Killer Rabbit: Was this trope named with him in mind, or something?
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: MegaGargomon is the culmination of Henry's Character Arc of learning not to fear violence and to become willing to fight when necessary. As such, its combat potential comes just as much from Henry as from Terriermon himself - the latter supplies powerful long-range Special Attacks, while the former controls MegaGargomon's movements like a Mo Cap Mecha, turning a hulking Digimon that should be little more than a glorified turret into a surprisingly mobile tai chi master that's dangerous at any range.
  • Light 'em Up: In addition to being a Vaccine-type Digimon, his most powerful attack as Rapidmon is his Tri Beam: a triangular laser that can easily disintegrate opponents as strong as a Deva.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Rapidmon is fast, tough, and powerful. Even as the hulking MegaGargomon he can pull off surprisingly fast and agile moves when necessary.
  • Loophole Abuse: In the dub, Henry tells Terriermon to ignore Impmon and not touch him. Impmon attacks, and Terriermon counters with his Terrier Tornado, canceling out Impmon's attack AND blowing him away. Terriermon points out to Henry that he didn't physically touch Impmon, just shot him with wind.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: MegaGargomon can fire massive barrages of missiles.
  • Made of Iron: MegaGargomon is able to soak up attacks that would send his teammates flying.
  • Mix-and-Match Critter: All of his main forms look like a humanoid mash-up of a dog and a rabbit. Which of the animals is more prominent varies on the form in question.
  • More Dakka: From Champion onwards, his line adds more and more firearms to his body. Taken to ridiculous extremes with MegaGargomon's seemingly endless array of hidden weapons.
  • Odd Couple: Terriermon is a snarky, impulsive Blood Knight while Henry is an overly cautious bookworm who would rather avoid fighting.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: He's the smallest of the main Digimon, but still able to fight Champion-level Digimon on fairly even ground. Funnily enough, this is subverted with his final form, who's a good ten times larger than all the other Mega-level partners.
  • Power Incontinence: When he first Digivolves, he can't stop himself from firing his hand-cannons.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: The cutest of the main three Digimon. Made unfortunate since this makes him irresistible to play with by Suichon.
  • Running Gag: In tough battles, he tends to run out of ammo. This has varied results.
  • Shoulders of Doom: As MegaGargomon, he is equipped with two missile launchers in his shoulders.
  • Shout-Out: MegaGargomon's overall design, with its myriad onboard ordinance and giant shoulder-launched missiles, is based on the OVA incarnation of Giant Robo
  • Spectacular Spinning: He loves spinning. As Terriermon, he has a trademark Spin Attack while his later evolutions has Gatling Good.
  • Super-Speed: Rapidmon, as his name implies, can move very fast. He demonstrates by slipping behind opponents faster than can be seen.
  • Super-Strength: As MegaGargomon he shows incredible strength, even for his size. He proves more than a physical match for Zhuqaiomon despite being maybe a fifth his size.
  • Unorthodox Reload: Until Henry swipes the Recharge card, he's basically stuck when he runs out of ammo.
  • Vocal Dissonance: In the Japanese and English versions, all of Terriermon's Digivolutions retain his cute voice.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Invoked by Gargomon, who is wearing a pants, though technically he's not wearing anything at all as Terriermon.

    Renamon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Renamon_5663.jpg
"As you wish, Rika."

Rika's partner, a tall and powerful fox-like Digimon who joined up with her to become even more powerful. Originally ruthless and standoffish, she is one of the first partners who has to learn about friendship, even more than her human partner.

Her digivolutions are as follows:

  • Fresh: Relemon, only seen in the WonderSwan games.
  • In-Training: Pokomon (Viximon), a small ball-shaped fox.
  • Rookie: Renamon, her default form.
  • Champion: Kyuubimon, a mythical nine-tailed fox.
  • Ultimate: Taomon, a humanoid fox with Taoist garb.
  • Biomerge-Mega: Sakuyamon, a Miko Digimon with ceremonial armour in the shape of a fox. Achieved by Bio-Merging with Rika.

Voiced by: Yuka Imai (JP) Mari Devon (Sakuyamon shared with Melissa Fahn) (EN), Ana Plaza (Spain), Adriana Rodríguez (Latin America)

  • Action Girl: The most combat-trained digimon of the three.
  • Asian Fox Spirit: Renamon and her digivolutions are all based on kitsune. Her rookie form is a humanoid fox ninja, her champion forms (Kyuubimon) is a nine-tailed fox, her ultimate form (Taomon) is a humanoid fox in onmyōji robes, and her mega form (Sakuyamon) is a humanoid in Shinto-themed fox armor.
  • Badass Adorable: A cute fox who is tough.
  • Badass Preacher: Invoked by her final two forms. Her ultimate level has an Onmyōdō like appearance called Taomon, while her final form is basically a golden armored Miko.
  • Barrier Warrior: As Taomon and Sakuyamon. Her barriers as Taomon can withstand repeated attacks from the Sovereign and even fly, but doing so quickly saps her stamina. As Sakuyamon, her barriers are even stronger, shrugging off geysers of the D-Reaper's substance. The same substance had been previously shown capable of severely wounding one of the Sovereign.
  • Big "NEVER!": When Vajramon keeps trying to get her to join the Devas.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Develops this type of relationship with Rika.
  • Bishōnen Line: Her final two forms get steadily more human and regal.
  • Bling of War: Sakuyamon has golden armor.
  • Cherry Blossoms: Her Transformation Sequence to Sakuyamon shows several sakura petals being blown over by the wind while she's standing over a pond or lake.
  • Combat Stilettos: Sakuyamon has them.
  • Cool Big Sis: She tends to act as the "adult" of the main group, answering any questions on the nature of Digital World and reining in the antics of her more childish fellow partner Digimon.
  • Cunning Like a Fox: Renamon is that most intelligent and experienced of the main partner digimon. While the others are childlike and heavily dependent on their human partners, she's managed to enact complex strategies without the input of anyone else in the group.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Not only she is strongly associated with the night, but Taomon, her Ultimate level stage, is a Demon Man type.
  • Dramatic High Perching: She has a penchant standing and/or leaping from tall objects whenever she can, which was very often early in the series.
  • Dub Personality Change: The Saban dub gives Renamon a more feminine and flirtatious personality, while in the Japanese version she is more aloof, and is more of an androgynous character.
  • Elemental Powers: Throughout her evolutions, she manages to use all of the classic elements in at least one attack.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: She is of the Data attribute.
  • Facial Markings: Sakuyamon has visible war paint on her cheeks.
  • Foil: With Impmon. Neither of their Tamers treated them like living beings (at first), both looked down on humans/human bonds while secretly wishing for one, and both believed absorbing their enemies was the only way to digivolve. The difference is, Rika realized she was wrong and set out to restore her relationship with Renamon; were it not for that, it wouldn't be a stretch to say she could have gone down the same path as Impmon. They also share other elements in common, like being awkward when attempting to make relationships with the other Digimon, and sharing a reverse Color Motif in their design (purple and yellow). Finally, of the main Digimon, they're the only ones that by design, have the closest association with a particular culture: Renamon with traditional Japanese mythology, and Impmon/Beelzemon with Western / American Christian symbology.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Rika and Renamon describe feeling a compassion for all life when they become Sakuyamon.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Purple is her secondary Color Motif after yellow.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: Renamon is one of the few lead Digimon in the franchise as a whole to avert this with her attacks.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Renamon occassionally gets this reaction from other characters. At one point Impmon hits on her, and Vajramon is amazed by Renamon's power and beauty enough for him to plead her to join the Devas. You know this means something when a Deva, a servant of the Digimon gods, gets smitten with her.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: With black sclera, which practically give her a permanent, built-in Death Glare and subvert Black Eyes of Crazy along the way.
  • Lady of War: She's as poised as her human partner.
  • Lunacy: Most of her forms are heavily associated with the moon and night in general. The first time she digivolves into Kyuubimon is the night of a full moon. Her transformation sequences as Taomon and Sakuyamon also feature a full moon.
  • Magic Staff: Sakuyamon fights with a golden shakujo staff.
  • Mama Bear: Beyond her obvious defense of Rika, Renamon is very protective of all the younger members of her group. This includes the other human kids, the more childlike partner Digimon, and allied Digimon who can't defend themselves like Calumon and Impmon.
  • Miko: Sakuyamon. Her alternate costume, seen only in the Japanese card game, reflects this.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Renamon is indeed foxy, boasting shapely Hartman Hips that are pretty difficult to ignore by viewers. Sakuyamon is much more so.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: She has absolute devotion to Rika. Outside of very rare circumstances, Renamon will follow her commands regardless of her personal feelings. In "Message in the Packet" Rika says that she wishes that the dynamic were more like Big Sister Mentor.
  • Mystical White Hair: Sakuyamon's hair is of a silvery-white variant.
  • Older Sidekick: After Rika melts out of her Ice Queen persona (pun intended), Renamon's relationship with her mostly follows a "big sister/little sister" dynamic, with Renamon as the big sister. Reinforced in the CD Drama Message In The Packet, where Rika explicitly calls Renamon a big sister several times.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Taomon is an onmyōji kitsune classified as a "Demon Man" Digimon.
  • Psychic Link: She somehow has a "connection" with Impmon that functions as a minor version of this - mainly in that she often seems to know where to find him when he's causing trouble or when he's in danger. She also was the first one to realize that Beelzemon was the evolved form of Impmon.
    • She's also implied to have something similar with Ruki, since in one of the early episodes they hold a conversation in Ruki's mind in the middle of the street without anyone else noticing.
    • Interestingly, the only other pair in the show who are shown to share a similar Mental Link who aren't a Tamer and their respective partner are Takato and Juri, the canon "main couple" of this season.
    • In Takato's dream sequence, Renamon somehow sensed a forming Guilmon watching her.
  • Purple Prose: Sakuyamon's defense spells in the dub. And her entire dialogue in other dubs.
  • Put on a Bus: She's conspicuously absent from the Digimon Tamers 2018 CD Drama, and according to Terriermon she's been missing for some time.
  • Religious Bruiser: Taomon, what do you think Tao stands for? Also Sakuyamon, who is basically a Miko.
  • Roof Hopping: Her preferred method of transport in urban areas.
  • She's a Man in Japan:
    • In the German dub, Renamon, Kyubimon and Taomon are voiced by a man, Olaf Reichmann. Despite this, Renamon is still referred to as beautiful and feminine.
    • Interestingly, she's actually explicitly portrayed as gender-ambiguous or androgynous in the Japanese version, using a (technically) gender-neutral pronoun and being confirmed by Word Of God to have been written as androgynous. This gets referenced when Ruki's family initially assumes she's female. She tells them that all Digimon are technically genderless - this conversation is retained in the English dub.
  • Ship Tease: With Impmon — somewhat in the original, but more heavily in the American dub. The American dub also adds a bit with Guilmon.
    • Her relationship with Impmon is somewhat in the original Japanese, but it goes beyond just dialogue or interactions. They share a lot of music queues, quirks and design elements in common to make the audience think if their relationship was put there on purpose:
    • Impmon properly presents himself in the series in the first episode that's focused on Renamon, and he personally presents himself to her before the other Mons. He's also witness to her first evolution into Kyuubimon.
    • While Impmon is tricky and antagonistic towards Terriermon and Guilmon when he meets with them, with Renamon at first he tries to impress her to comprehend his philosophy of living Tamer-free. Later on, Vajramon, who explicitly crushes on Renamon; also tries to court her using similar talking points.
    • She's the one to discover the new Beelzemon was a transformed Impmon; and later on during their fight, she's the Digimon who most insists on trying to talk him out of killing the group.
    • Their Psychic Link that amounts to Renamon always knowing where he is and whether he is in trouble. Of note, the only other pair in the season who share a similar connection (without being a Tamer and their partner) are Takato and Juri, who are the main canon couple of the series.
    • She always senses him whenever he gets into trouble and gets to save him. She almost delayed the trip back home because she insisted in saving him from dying in the desert of the Digital World. At that point in the story, after killing Leomon; all the other kids gave up on Impmon, but not her.
    • Once Beelzemon returns to save the day against the newly emerging D-Reaper in the real world, WarGrowlmon and Rapidmon are shown skeptical of him at first, but not Taomon. Also after his attack is shown to be successful, she's the first to initiate the retaliation attack to finish the creature.
    • After he was gravely injured fighting the D-Reaper, Sakuyamon was the first to rush to save him. Later on she treats Impmon gently carrying him in her arms after Grani saved him and brought him to her.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: One of the most mature tame Digimon in the series, fiercely loyal to her tamer and a major in graceful feminine badassery.
  • Sitting on the Roof: Frequently does this during her downtime.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Out of the 10 main and supporting Digimon, Renamon is the only female, though Lopmon is female in the English dub.
  • The Spock: Renamon is the most rational Digimon of the team.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: She can easily appear or disappear as Rika needs her, despite being six feet tall and bright yellow.
Takato: "Where do you come from all the time? Do you just wait around to scare us?"
  • The Stoic: She's calm, rational, and rarely displays strong emotions. That said, she can show isn't nearly as cold as she seems if the situation calls for it.
  • Support Party Member: Sakuyamon is born from Rika learning to trust others rather than tackle everything herself. As such, while Renamon is the strongest fighter of the group at Rookie level, Sakuyamon is their weakest Mega, trading raw power for a versatile spread of teamwork-oriented abilities like barriers, Summon Magic and Energy Donation.
  • Technicolor Ninjas: She's a human-sized, bright yellow fox creature, but she's skilled enough in stealth to easily move around a human city in broad daylight without being seen.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: Despite her eventually learning the value of teamwork, there are several occasions where Renamon is shown to believe a fight is best left fought by only one individual. Renamon refused help from Guilmon and Terriermon when she fought Allomon. When Guilmon was fighting Devidramon, she informed Rika she wouldn't interfere. When Impmon chose to fight Indramon and rejected any notion of receiving help, Renamon respected his wish, to the point she only saved him when he was literally about to die.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is possibly the most loyal of the three main partners. Even after Rika quit being a tamer and proclaimed that she hated digimon, Renamon still kept watch over her. The moment Rika was in real danger, Renamon leapt to defend her.
  • Villainous Crush: Vajramon has one on her after battling her. She reacts as well as you'd expect.
  • Walk on Water: Her Transformation Sequence to Sakuyamon shows her standing over a pond or lake.
  • We Can Rule Together: Is offered to join the Devas by Vajramon. She naturally declines, but strings him along long enough to get him to spill the details of the Devas' goals.
  • Weak, but Skilled: All of the Tamers' Digimon have fought and beaten higher-leveled opponents, but Renamon makes a habit of punching above her weight, even when outnumbered.
  • Worthy Opponent: Renamon had decimated all Digimon she encountered in the beginning, even some Champion-levels. However, she was unable to defeat Guilmon upon the first meeting, much to her confusion.
  • Yellow/Purple Contrast: Renamon has yellow fur with purple gloves and purple marks. As Sakuyamon, she wears yellow and purple armor.

    Leomon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leomon_4293.jpg

"Fighting isn't everything, you have your own destiny."

Jeri's partner, who's exactly like his original series counterpart.

His digivolutions are as follows:

  • Rookie: Elecmon, a long-eared, multi-tailed red mammal with electric powers. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet.
  • Champion: Leomon, his default form.
  • Ultimate: GrapLeomon, a cyborg Leomon with turbines in his limbs. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet.
  • Mega: SaberLeomon, a large quadrupedal lion with saber teeth. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet.

Voiced by: Hiroaki Hirata (JP), Paul St. Peter (EN), Eugenio Barona (Spain), Manuel Campuzano (Latin America)

  • Always with You: Even in death, he is still able to help Jeri find strength against the D-Reaper.
  • Backup from Otherworld: Despite Beelzemon's best efforts, he can't break through the D-Reaper's final barrier using his own power. He has to dig deep to draw on the power of Leomon's data to summon his Fist of the Beast King to save Leomon's former Tamer.
  • The Big Guy: He even outclasses Renamon at one point.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Leomon crossed into the real world and challenged a servant of the closest thing his world has to gods just because he was threatening two random helpless innocents.
  • Cool Sword: He wields a blade in battle.
  • Dead Sidekick: Close to the final arc of the series, he is killed by Beelzemon.
  • Dub Induced Plothole: The dub fumbles his last words a bit - they were changed in his death scene and according flashbacks, but instances of Jeri quoting them herself later acted as though they weren't modified.
  • The Fatalist: Deconstructed; before his death, he says that he believes that everyone has a destiny. His dying words about this are meant to comfort Jeri, but due to past trauma, only succeed in breaking her more. However, it's eventually reconstructed when Jeri realizes what he truly meant.
  • Fluffy Tamer: Jeri's got this dynamic with him.
  • Gentle Giant: Leomon is giant muscular warrior lion-man around ten feet tall, but is a warrior dedicated to protecting the weak. Especially the his Tamer, Jeri.
  • Hidden Depths: Leomon has fought all his life. Against Beelzemon, he claims power isn't everything and takes a moment to nod at Jeri.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: The dynamic with Jeri: she's a normal pre-teen girl, he's a ten-foot-tall lion-man.
  • I Work Alone: When he first appeared he was put off by Jeri claiming that he was her partner, partly because of her odd affection towards him, but also because he states he has always fought alone in the past and that is how he plans to keep it. Once Jeri becomes his tamer for real though, he drops this attitude and is very accepting of her as his partner due to her kindness towards him.
  • Killed Off for Real: This essentially kickstarted the Running Gag of Leomon and his subspecies being killed off. This series as a whole was the first to harshly avert the normal Digimon usage of the Death Is Cheap trope. Leomon's death is treated completely seriously, with the exploration of the consequences being a major plot driver thereafter, and is very permanent as a result.
  • The Lost Lenore: To the entire main cast after he is very suddenly killed off. His partner, Jeri, obviously dealt with the brunt of the resulting grief, but the memory of Leomon lingers heavily for the rest of the series, including for his killer, Beelzemon who comes to deeply regret what happened.
  • Mega Neko: He's a big feline Digimon.
  • Mr. Exposition: During the Digital World arc, being the digimon next to Renamon most familiar with how to navigate the digital world.
  • Not So Above It All: He comes to the human world as a strong, stoic warrior. That immediately falls away when Jeri start fawning over him. He spends most of the running around a park trying to escape the young girl demanding he become her partner.
  • Not So Stoic: He comes to agree with Rika's assessment of Kenta and Kazu being annoying idiots.
  • Older Sidekick: He's the closest thing to an adult chaperone the children have during the digital world arc.
  • Panthera Awesome: He's a powerful, anthropomorphic lion.
  • Papa Wolf: "Do what you must, Beelzemon, but I will not let you harm these children!" Being harmed himself, on the other hand...
  • Sacrificial Lion: The director's notes reveal he was chosen for this role because of season one Leomon's sacrifice. His death is, unfortuantely, what really kickstarted the franchise-wide Running Gag of literal Sacrificial Lions.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Leomon is only around for 13 episodes, but his death yields grave consequences that affect the remainder of the Tamers story.
  • Spirit Advisor: His spirit shows up in Jeri's digivice to cheer her up in the climax.
  • The Stoic: He's generally calm and composed, both in action and speech.
  • Walking Spoiler: His story is a relatively short part of the overall show but it's also the lynchpin for the events leading to the climax.
  • Warrior Therapist: His fight with Beelzemon and pleas for him to stop is this trope.
Leomon: To have power is not to be strong.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Leomon is quite strong for a Champion, but most of the opponents he faced were higher level than that. He still managed to hold his own and defeat a few with a combination of determination and skill. Even Beelzemon was visibly harmed by his blows.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: His reaction of Takato picking a fight with him at episode 21.

    Guardromon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Guardromon_6254.gif

Kazu's partner. A slightly small but sturdy mechanical Digimon who doesn't say much. He first appears as Andromon, but is reduced to his Champion level after a beating from an ultimate named Orichimon shortly before partnering up with Kazu and...stays that way for the rest of the show.

His digivolutions are as follows:

  • In-Training: Kapurimon (Caprimon), a fox-like blob with metal casing on his top half.
  • Rookie: Kokuwamon, a robotic childlike stag beetle. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet.
  • Champion: Guardromon, his default form
  • Ultimate: Andromon, a tall android with bits of casing exposed.
  • Mega: HiAndromon, a finished and upgraded Andromon. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet.

Voiced by: Kiyoyuki Yanada (JP), Richard Cansino (EN), José María Carrero (Spain), Carlos Sosa (Latin America)

  • Adaptational Badass: In the manga adaptation, he's the one to take down Orochimon, blasting himself through Orochi's head despite being at a lower level.
  • Ascended Extra: In previous incarnations, Andromon was just a supporting Mon and Guardromon were just robotic Mooks.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He manages to save Gallantmon from certain death by attacking Beelzemon right as he tried to take the final blow. It doesn't do any real damage to Beelzemon, but the distraction gives Gallantmon the opportunity to turn the tables and win the fight.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: No, Andromon, the cyborg with mechanical parts resembling a skeleton and flesh parts resembling rotting flesh, and Guardromon, a Virus attribute Digimon, are not evil.
  • Genius Ditz: He's incompetent in a lot of ways, but his debut showed that he's smart enough to come up with some decent battle plans if he tries.
  • Heroic Wannabe: He desperately wants to protect the weak and fight injustice, but his clumsiness and scatterbrained nature usually end up ruining any attempts to live up to that image. He eventually grows to fill a solid supporting role for the rest of the team.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: He wants to be this, but tends to screw up more often than not.
  • Literal-Minded: Played for Laughs. He lets Suzie run off to help Henry because Kazu told him to watch her, but didn't say anything about stopping her.
Guardromon: But I did watch her. I watched her fly.
  • Only Sane Man: More reasonable than his partner. In the time Kenta, Kazu, MarineAngemon and he are together, he fits this role in their group dynamic.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: He tries his best, but mostly ends up used for humor thanks to his clumsiness and misunderstandings.
  • Power Up Letdown: Andromon is usually presented as a strong Ultimate-level Digimon, but this one was pitifully ineffective when he was introduced. He performed much better in his weaker Guardromon form than he ever did as his supposedly stronger state and never tried to digivolve beyond his Champion-level form again.
  • Purple Prose: Does this aloud in some dubs.
  • Robot Buddy: He's a machine-type Digimon that supports Kazu as a guardian and sidekick.
  • Stone Wall: As Guardromon, he's significantly below the destructive power of the Champion forms of his teammates and can't touch the strength of their higher forms, but his metal body makes him durable enough to shrug off hits that would have taken out the others.
  • Support Party Member: He never digivolves beyond his Champion level after joining the team, but manages to aid his team despite his lack of power. Mostly by using his guided missiles, physical strength, flight jets, and armored body to step in at critical moments or perform out-of-combat functions nobody else could.

    MarineAngemon
"Kahuna Waves, puu~"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/MarineAngemon_8638.gif

Kenta's partner. A small pixie-like Digimon that swims in water and packs a big punch, although he prefers to deal with things without violence. Talks even less than Guardramon, only saying Puu.

His digivolutions are as follows:

  • Rookie: Penguinmon, a slap-happy blue penguin. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet.
  • Champion: Dolphmon, a dolphin Digimon. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet.
  • Ultimate: Whamon, a huge eyeless whale. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet.
  • Mega: MarineAngemon, his default form.

Voiced by: Ai Iwamura (JP), Wendee Lee (EN, series), Mona Marshall (EN, movie), Amalia Cantarero (Spain)

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: He wears a Holy Ring.
  • Badass Adorable: An cute little pink pixie who speaks in broken sentences...and pulls out Big Damn Heroes moments against an Eldritch Abomination like they're going out of fashion.
  • Barrier Warrior: He can make bubbles large enough to encompass multiple other people and protect anyone inside from the D-Reaper's corroding effects.
  • Good Hurts Evil: His special attacks are effectively positive emotions encoded into bubble that heal and protect others. They just so happen to be the ideal weapon and defense against the D-Reaper.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: MarineAngemon's Kahuna Wave summons tiny little bubbles, which are enough to send the D-Reaper's agents running, and can be used as transport and protection inside the D-Reaper's zone.
    • MarineAngemon himself is this to Kenta, who's initially upset to learn his partner is something so small and cute despite all his friends having more imposing and powerful partners... ...until he learns that MarineAngemon is a Mega in his default form.
  • In Name Only: Supporting material confirms the obvious: that he has absolutely nothing to do with the proper Angemon family aside from name.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: Kenta can understand him better than anyone else.
  • Love Bubbles: Used for recovery and offense.
  • Light Is Good: He's an angelic Digimon with powers based on love, protection, and happiness.
  • The Medic: Specializes in healing with his Kahuna Waves move, though it can also be used as a normal attack.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Despite the structure of his name, he's not MarineDevimon's Good Counterpart. MarineAngemon's name refers to Sea Angels, a species of deep sea sea slugs.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: A Mega with the size and appearance of an In-Training.
  • The Power of Love: His "attacks" are this in bubble form. They're enough to repel the D-Reaper's strongest agents.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Kenta was stunned that someone so small and cute was a Mega. Though he's certainly not the only Mega of such stature and design, most of them are quite huge and have complex designs by comparison.
  • Speech-Impaired Animal: He can talk, but his speech is usually limited to repeating words he hears and cooing noises.
  • Support Party Member: Despite being one of the only six Mega-Level Digimon on the team, MarineAngemon doesn't fight on his own. Instead, he shields the others with his bubbles and disperses smaller portions of D-Reaper goo.

    Cyberdramon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Cyberdramon_8773.gif

Ryo's nearly fully evolved partner who likewise comes out of nowhere. He resembles one of the demon-type Digimon, but is apparently a cyborg.

His digivolutions are as follows:

  • Fresh: Ketomon, only seen in the WonderSwan games.
  • In-Training: Hopmon, a purple, scaly blob
  • Rookie: Monodramon, a small, fairly unthreatening dinosaur.
  • Champion: Strikedramon, a larger Monodramon with jeans and Cyberdramon's faceplate. Only seen in the Wonder Swan games.
  • Ultimate: Cyberdramon, his default form.
  • Biomerge-Mega: Justimon, a Rider-inspired (specifically, Riderman) Digimon. Achieved by Bio-Merging with Ryo.

Voiced by: Ikkei Seta (JP), Lex Lang (Justimon shared with Steve Staley)(EN), José María Carrero (Spain)

  • All There in the Manual: His rather complicated backstory with Ryo is explained in the Wonder Swan games and never touched on in the anime.
  • Ax-Crazy: His bloodlust is so strong that his partner can barely control him. When it gets bad enough, he has to be taken to places with enough dangerous opponents to fight to sate his need for battle until he calms down.
  • The Berserker: As Cyberdramon, he's brutal to opponents. Left to his own devices, he'd tear any opponent to shreds with his bare claws. Ryo has to resort to restraining him with a whip to keep him from losing himself entirely to his lust for battle.
  • Bishōnen Line: His final form Justimon is very human looking.
  • Blood Knight: He constantly seeks out opponents to fight. In the Real World, he and Ryo fought the D-Reaper to settle his blood lust while the other Tamers were resting.
  • Canon Immigrant: He is the forced Jogress between Millenniummon and a separate Monodramon, which is why he can't stay in Monodramon form for long and why Cyberdramon is seeking a powerful "enemy" (Millenniummon, his Dark God Side).
  • Catchphrase: "Are you my enemy?"
  • Dark Is Not Evil: No, the vicious eyeless cyborg dragon isn't actually evil.
  • Demoted to Extra: Like Ryo, his role is significantly reduced in the manga adaptation, and he's absent during the D-Reaper arc.
  • Enemy Within: The "strong enemy" he's so obsessed with finding and defeating is Millenniummon himself. As he is comprised of the villainous Millenniummon and a digimon who was determined to defeat Millenniummon, Cyberdramon can't quite square away the inner conflict, resulting in him often going out of control.
  • Expy: Of Kamen Riders in his Mega form.
  • Fusion Dance: He's the result of a forced fusion between the original Monodramon and ZeedMillenniummon.
  • Heel–Face Reincarnation: He is effectively Millenniummon reborn into a new entity with no conscious memories of his evil past.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his raging need for battle, Cyberdramon isn't evil, he just easily loses control as he has to constantly restrain the influence of his Millenniummon half. When he reverts to Monodramon, his bloodlust fades and his true goofy and childlike personality shines through. Unfortunately, he's unable to remain in that form for long.
  • Light Is Not Good: He's of the light-aligned Vaccine attribute. You wouldn't know that listening to his Blood Knight tendencies.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: He needs Ryo to keep him from losing himself to his bloodlust and going berserk.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Ryo and Cyberdramon both lost most of their memories of their old adventures before Tamers. While Ryo himself has some inklings of what happened, he deliberately avoids looking into the past too deeply as he subconsciously fears that doing so would risk Cyberdramon reawakening his memories of his time as Millenniummon.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Digimon live to fight. It's what in this continuity they were designed for. Cyberdramon is that ramped up to constant need to find the strongest opponent and fight them. The emergence of the D-Reaper makes him pause, a fact Ryo even comments upon.
  • Past-Life Memories: The reason he's so obsessed with hunting down a "strong enemy" is because he subconsciously remembers his past as the original Monodramon and senses the power of his old enemy Millenniummon, but can't recognize that it's a part of himself. The constant drive to seek an opponent that no longer exists often makes him uncontrollable.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: As Justimon, as part of the Kamen Rider shoutout.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Cyberdramon's natural Mega-form, as a result of a forced fusion, is ZeedMillenniumon, one of the most powerful and evil forces in the franchise. It's mostly contained now, but Millenniummon's influence still drives Cyberdramon's inherent bloodlust.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Downplayed; Monodramon, Cyberdramon's Rookie form, is the other half of the jogress, and is generally a playful and inquisitive Digimon.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: He acts as a living container for the remnants of Millenniummon.
  • Shapeshifter Default Form: Unlike most partner Digimon who spend their off-hours in Rookie level, Cyberdramon's default is his Ultimate. He can't revert to his lower stages for very long thanks to the power of Milleniummon's remnant data within him.
  • Willfully Weak: Justimon, while powerful, is far weaker than his natural Mega form. Given that going to his natural Mega would mean unleashing any form of Millenniummon on the world again, Ryo considers the loss of strength to be a more than acceptable trade-off.

    Lopmon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/LopmonTamers_5621.png

Suzie's partner, and a counterpart to Terriermon (a distaff one in the dub). Originally known as Antylamon, the rabbit Deva, she is forced to regress to her Lopmon form when she becomes Suzie's partner.

Her evolutions are as follows:

  • Fresh: Conomon, only seen in supplementary materials.
  • In-Training: Kokomon (Chocmon), a chocolate-coloured blob with spikes protruding from her head.
  • Rookie: Lopmon, her default form after her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Champion: Turuiemon, a larger Lopmon in a gi wielding metal claws on her wrists. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet.
  • Ultimate: Antylamon (Andiramon), a tall bipedal rabbit with enormous hands. One of the Deva.
  • Mega: Cherubimon, an angelic rabbit-like cherub. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet.

Voiced by: Aoi Tada (JP), Michelle Ruff (EN, series), Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (EN, movie), Diana Torres (Spain)

  • Antiquated Linguistics: In the Japanese version, Lopmon speaks in an outdated dialect, and thus comes off as very formal. It also made Lopmon's gender impossible to guess, hence why Lopmon ended up female in the dub.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: One difference between Lopmon and Terriermon is that Lopmon has a patch of pink fur at the neck that looks very much like a starched shirt collar, fitting for such a formal Digimon, compared to the more rambunctious Terriermon.
  • Badass Adorable: The Level 3 Lopmon can make the jump straight to a Level 5 Andiramon.
  • Badly Battered Babysitter: Antylamon when she first meets Suzie. Not only does she have to put up with her antics, but she also gets injured by Makuramon when he tries to kidnap Suzie. This sets the tone for later Antylamon interactions with Suzie, while Lopmon is more of a lovingly battered pet.
  • Cool Big Sis: In the English version, she acts as this to Suzie as Antylamon. As Lopmon, it ceases being Cool Big Sis.
  • Crossdressing Voices: Japanese version only.
  • Cute Little Fangs: As Lopmon.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Joins the heroes' side after her original group got trashed.
  • Gentle Giant: Antylamon may be a Deva, and a thirty foot tall rabbit monster, but she's also the nicest of them by a country mile, and quickly befriends Suzie.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Was originally a Deva.
  • Mama Bear: Even before she officially became Suzie's partner and was still a Deva, she displayed a very motherly attitude towards her. While guarding Zhuqiaomon's domain, she let her play with her and shortly after separating, she immediately hopped to her protection as soon as she heard her distressed screaming from a distance. Once Suzie officially became a Tamer, protecting her has pretty much become her top priority above all else.
  • Noble Demon: He's no Demon, but he's the Deva's Token Good Teammate who becomes Suzie's partner.
  • Last of His Kind: Lopmon is the only surviving Deva by series end.
  • Only Sane Man: The only Deva to not be a genocidal villain and is, in fact, a Cool Big Sis to Suzie.
  • Redemption Earns Life: She is the only Deva to do a Heel–Face Turn, and becomes the only one to survive the events of the series.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Antylamon has a small purple one.
  • She's a Man in Japan: A rare ambiguous case of this. Lopmon/Antylamon uses a gender-neutral dialect in Japanese and has a female voice actor, forcing the localization team to take a guess at what her gender was. Later on Xiaochun tries to encourage Lopmon to use the pronoun 'boku', which while very occasionally is used by girls, is more often used by boys, indicating Lopmon is most likely percieved as a boy in Japanese. However, further confusing things, Konaka refers to Lopmon as 'she/her' in his personal english translation of his notes on the show, although whether or not that's because he's respecting the way the english audience percieves Lopmon is unknown. It could be said that the fact Renamon explicitly states that in this season Digimon 'aren't divided by gender' works in their favor.
  • Token Good Teammate: A Digimon coming from a line of Jerkass Gods who does a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As the next season and Hurricane Landing show, Lopmon has an EPIC one available in the form of Cherubimon (one of the Celestial Digimon). In a more Tamers-relevant example, regaining the ability to Digivolve after Zhuqiaomon rescinded that power, when she became Suzie's partner, constitutes another such level.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Antylamon manages to score a few kills on D-Reaper agents by using her skills to exploit their weaknesses.

    Impmon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Impmon_6355.jpg

Impmon is a trouble making Digimon who spends most of his time picking on humans. He harasses the Tamers and their Digimon because of his dislike towards humans, saying that no "self-respecting Digimon" would ever ally themselves to humans, but secretly envies their ability to digivolve. After a beating from a Deva in an attempt to prove himself, being humiliated and having his ego crushed, Impmon readily accepts a deal with Caturamon. Impmon would gain the ability to digivolve, but, in return, Impmon would have to kill the Tamers and their Digimon. As Beelzemon, he became obsessed with power and murdered Leomon before being stopped. Afterwards, he becomes The Atoner and puts his efforts to making it up to the Tamers.

His digivolutions are as follows:

  • Fresh: Keemon, only seen in supplementary materials.
  • In-Training: Yaamon, a mischievous-looking blob.
  • Rookie: Impmon, his default form.
  • Champion: Meramon, a humanoid Digimon whose body is fully made of flames. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet. The Tamers 20th anniversary tie-in for the Vital Bracelet changes this to Wizardmon.
  • Ultimate: SkullMeramon, a metallic biker wreathed in blue flames. Only seen in the D-Power tie-in V-Pet. The Tamers 20th anniversary tie-in for the Vital Bracelet changes this to Baalmon.
  • Mega: Beelzemon, a menacing humanoid in leather with a long tail. One of the Seven Great Demon Lords, though none of the others have anything to do with Tamers.
    • Blast Mode: Gains an Arm Cannon and wings, his eye color changes from red to green, and his overall color scheme becomes a few shades lighter.

Voiced by: Hiroki Takahashi (JP), Derek Stephen Prince (EN), Francisco Andrés Valdivia (Spain), Jesús Barrero (Latin America)

  • Anti-Hero: He went through multiple trials before truly becoming the hero he was meant to be. His position in the story bounced around, from being a lonely anti-hero and wannabe rival, to a full-on villain, then back to anti-hero, and then finally becoming a heroic atoner.
  • Arc Words: In the dub, there's a subtle but noticable repeating of the word 'pathetic' with regards to Impmon. He loves to fling the word around at those he scorns, but being called or thought of as 'pathetic' is practically a Berserk Button for him. In the end, after he goes on a Power High induced rampage and is left feeling guilt-ridden and empty, the only one he's calling pathetic is himself.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Subverted. Before he became Beelzemon, a lot of his talk was just a front to cover up his insecurities. It's played straight after he digivolves and Played for Laughs after his Heel–Face Turn.
  • The Atoner: Post Heel–Face Turn, it becomes his entire motivation for the last part of the series and jump-started his Character Development.
  • Ax-Crazy: As Beelzemon, he is obsessed with the power to the point of turning on his former friends for its sake. It's not until Juri, the one person with the most reason to want him dead, spares his life that he realizes he's gone down the wrong path.
  • Badass Biker: The first thing he did as Beelzemon was take control of a motorcycle that had, until then, possessed anyone who tried to ride it. Gallantmon vaporised it during their fight, but it showed up again in the second movie.
  • Badass and Child Duo:
    • Or rather, a trio with Impmon and the two toddlers Ai and Mako. Not so much when he's in his Impmon form, but it's quite a thing to know that the most important people to a virus-typed, monstrous-looking and heavily-armed punk biker like Beelzemon are the youngest children ever officially partnered with a digimon.
    • Also could be how his eventual relationship with Calumon is percieved. Calumon is not a human child but he's small, cute, and childlike, and certainly quite a sight to see teaming up with the intimidating looking Beelzemon.
  • Bargain with Heaven: Makes an arrangement with Zhuqiaomon that grants him the power he coveted. A darker example than most, given what the price was.
  • Be All My Sins Remembered: After killing Leomon, breaking Jeri's heart in the process. While the Tamers eventually forgive him and accept him back after his Heel–Face Turn, Impmon himself never quite manages to forgive himself.
"What I did... is beyond forgiveness. I don't need anyone to tell me that."
  • Beelzebub: His Mega-form Beelzemon was deliberately based off of Beelzebub.
  • Being Evil Sucks: After his defeat in the Digital World, he falls into depression, having come to hate himself for hurting Jeri. Reuniting with his Tamers later gives him the resolve to make amends.
  • Berserk Button:
    • As Beelzemon, do NOT refer to him as Impmon. Post Heel–Face Turn he won't hurt anyone over it, but he'll lose his composure and start gesticulating and stamping in indignation.
    • Also post Heel–Face Turn, he's very clearly angry after the D-Reaper destroys his cannon, which was a gift from Mako.
  • The Berserker: A heroic example. Against the D-Reaper he wasted no effort trying to save Jeri until he was near-fatally struck down.
  • Beyond Redemption: The Tamers, especially Takato and Guilmon, declare him to be this once Beelzemon kills Leomon, all of them swearing that what he did was unforgivable and Gallantmon only being stopped from killing him outright by Jeri. He comes to personally view his actions as unforgivable, even as the others eventually forgive him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Swooping in and saving the day when the D-Reaper is about to mop the floor with the other Digimon following his debut as Beelzemon Blast Mode.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Although it's never mentioned in the series itself, Beelzemon's guns have a name: Berenjena. It means eggplant.note
  • Bishōnen Line: Beelzemon has a much more humanoid form than Impmon, and he's way stronger.
  • Blatant Lies: He tells Guilmon he "really hates" Takato's bread as he keeps shoving more into his mouth.
  • Blood Knight: Initially as Beelzemon, he sought out challenges to test his strength and load the data of digimon.
  • Brooklyn Rage: In the English dub he has a noticeable Brooklyn accent and uses slang like "Toots" and "Bada Boom", the latter being an used as an attack name. It comes with the Joe Pesci impression his voice actor was going for.
  • Bullet Time: When he fires at the Chrysalimon. The bullets even stay perfectly whole.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Impmon has a really bad habit of antagonizing people bigger and stronger than him. He frequently mocked the protagonist's Digimon, despite all of them being stronger than him even while in rookie form. When he learned that Henry forbade Terriermon from fighting, Impmon tried to take advantage of this by bullying Terriermon, only to be sent flying by a tornado attack. He also harassed Growlmon when the Champion Digimon told him he didn't want to talk to him. This tendency gets taken to its most extreme point when Impmon keeps trying to attack and antagonize the Ultimate level Indramon, despite the Deva being so out of Impmon's league that he can effortlessly kick Impmon around like a hackysack and nearly kills him.
  • Character Development: His desire for strength leads him into a Bargain with Heaven in the Digital World. After killing Leomon he is guilt ridden for hurting Jeri and suffers a depression. Returning to the Real World, he reunites with his Tamers, rediscovers his inner goodness and achieves strength fighting to protect his friends. His arc is complete once Jeri forgives him.
  • Children Raise You: Impmon is an unusual spin on the typical human-monster partner dynamic, one where the monster has a mental age of a teenager or young adult, but his human partners are literally toddlers, and part of his Character Development arc involves him learning to be more patient with them. The result is he comes off more as a guardian figure to Ai and Mako, rather than a partner.
  • Clothing Appendage: Played with. Generally speaking, if digimon have clothing or weapons, they're technically part of their body and will spontaneously appear/disappear upon evolution/devolution. Impmon's red bandanna, however, is sometimes treated as if it's completely separate from his body, and it's an accessory he has as both Impmon and Beelzemon. At one point, Beelzemon loses the bandanna. When he devolves back into Impmon, he is still missing the bandanna until it's returned to him.
  • Crucified Hero Shot: Oddly enough, Beelzemon gets one. When he and Culumon enter the D-Reaper Kernel Sphere to save Jeri, the D-Reaper ensnares him in its cables and he ends up in crucified position.
  • The Cynic: He's got a very negative view of the world, believing humans are selfish, that digimon only exist to fight and that power is the only value to existing. Post Heel–Face Turn, this stops being the case, with him returning to his Tamers and leading the charge to save Jeri.
  • Dark Is Evil: Switches between this and Dark Is Not Evil before ultimately settling on the latter. Henry's sensei helps cement it.
  • Death by Irony: Although Impmon himself survives, in the final battle, Beelzemon's form is destroyed by getting Impaled with Extreme Prejudice by the D-Reaper while trying to save Jeri, the girl whose partner he killed via the very same method. This is the last time we see Beelzemon in the show. It's also ironic that she was the one who saved his life which in turn led him on the path to redemption, but he is left unable to save her.
  • Death Seeker: Has shades of this after his Heel–Face Turn. He may not actually actively seek death, but after Jeri spares him, he doesn't fight back when he gets attacked by a pack of much smaller digimon, and in fact starts screaming for them to take away his powers until he collapses in a devolved state. He also develops a reckless attitude in battle and he encourages the Tamers to "forget about me and save Jeri", so he certainly doesn't seem to care if he dies.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Or rather, being beaten and then spared by the girl whose partner you murdered equals a Heel Realization, atonement, and then friendship.
  • Demon Lords And Arch Devils: Beelzemon is named after Beelzebub, one of the Seven Devils. Later on, he's considered one of the Seven Great Demon Lords.
  • Determinator: Hell. Yes. Probably his most consistent defining trait - if he has a goal in mind, he will not give up even if it is truly futile.
    • He repeatedly harasses the Tamers and their digimon while spouting his steadfast belief that humans suck and that digimon that are friends with them are no better than pets. This is despite the fact that every time he does he either ends up ignored or ends up getting his butt kicked.
    • He refuses to stop trying to fight Indramon once he decides to do so, even though Indramon can kick Impmon around without batting an eye. Even Indramon himself admits such a trait is admirable, if foolish.
    • When he gets Drunk on the Dark Side and hunts down the Tamers, his sheer stubbornness and refusal to believe that he can lose causes the fight to escalate until he's fighting toe-to-toe with the best the Tamers can output and it's uncertain who will win until they finally overcome him.
    • After he comes to his senses, he forces himself to warp digivolve into Beelzemon just from the desire to make amends and help his friends out of a jam.
    • He soldiers on through everything the D-Reaper throws at him to save Jeri, even after she rejects him, even after he's beaten so badly that he reverts to Impmon, because all he cares about is getting her out of the situation he feels was his fault to begin with.
  • Deuteragonist: If Takato, Rika, and Henry, along with their partners are to be taken together as a collective protagonist, Impmon, along with Jeri, are the deuteragonists, with Impmon having very significant character development and plot relevance over the course of the story.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Impmon has a chip on his shoulder, due to having a bad experience with humans in the past. He also wants very much to digivolve and become more powerful, but can't stand anyone feeling bad for him and his shortcomings. Following on from this, he refuses help from the Tamers when facing Indramon, even when he nearly dies in the process.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: When he first becomes Beelzemon and is a bad guy, he gets a massive Power High to the point his sanity starts degrading, and naturally his ham levels go up as well.
  • Double Tap: "How about a DOUBLE IMPACT!" Beelzemon's main attack, consisting of two rapid-fire blasts with his shotguns.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In the Japanese intro there's a very ominous shadow walking behind Impmon. The shadow belongs to Beelzemon. However, the silhouette can be seen just a few seconds ahead if one pays close attention.
  • Easily Forgiven: Zig-Zagged. When Renamon and Rika bring a weakened Impmon into the Ark with them, barely anyone puts up any objection despite the fact he'd come uncomfortably close to murdering them all. However, when Beelzemon meets the team again, they are initially cautious and suspicious of his intentions, until he helps them win a battle against the D-Reaper, only after which he earns their trust. He also goes through extreme lengths to rescue Jeri only to be rejected by her, but she ultimately forgives him anyway even though she is the person he hurt the most.
  • Evil Is Hammy: As Beelzemon before his Heel–Face Turn, he often would scream his sentences to get his point across.
  • Evil Overlooker: He was shown in this fashion in the early promos for the show, except he was underneath the Tamers rather than above.
  • Expressive Ears: They droop slightly if he's sad and point almost straight up when he's surprised, for example.
  • Expy: Impmon's design is very evocative of classic cartoon characters like those made by Disney or Warner Brothers. He particularly resembles a demonic Mickey Mouse, what with the dark colored body, cream colored face, large distinctive ears (that often display a Cheated Angle), gloves on his hands, and red and yellow being his main accent colors. At first, this is entertainingly fitting given his initial role as a comedic Butt-Monkey, and doubly so when it's revealed that he'd once stayed with some very young human children, but he quickly becomes an example of what might happen if a character is treated like a joke for too long...
  • Failure Is the Only Option: Every attempt he makes at saving Jeri is ineffectual. Punching the sphere holding her doesn't work. Shooting it doesn't work. Even him using a new, powered up move does absolutely nothing to free Jeri from her prison. The only thing he does that brings him close to saving her is summoning Leomon's signature move, which only serves as a horrible reminder that he murdered Leomon, and ultimately is the nail in the coffin for her trusting him long enough to get her out. Impmon is out of commission for the rest of the series, never succeeding at the thing he most desperately wanted to do.
  • Foil: His characterization and arc runs roughly parallel to Jeri's. Both of them are lonely individuals, but Jeri desperately seeks connection with others while Impmon desperately tries to pretend he doesn't need it. This gets exemplified in how Jeri crazily chased digimon around hoping to be their partner while Impmon rejected and ran away from his would-be-partners. Both of them go through a period where they believe it's better to be alone, with Impmon deciding to destroy everything around him, and Jeri deciding it would be better if she just disappeared. Jeri ends up sparing his life unexpectedly, while he fails to save hers when she's in danger. Impmon ends up learning how to find strength in his friends, while Jeri learns how to find strength in herself. They both also break the usual digimon human-partner conventions, with Jeri being the only human to lose their digimon without revival during the series and Impmon being the only digimon with two partners.
  • Freudian Excuse: He hates humans because his himan partners treated him like an object and abused him. They're only toddlers and and not intentionally malicious, but it left some clear emotional scars. His yearning for power is also a result of the Digital World being harsh towards weaker digimon who are loaded by the more powerful.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: This guy started out as just an annoying prankster, but became powerful enough to kill one of the heroes, nearly kill several more, and was able to fight on-par with the main characters against the D-Reaper.
  • Fur and Loathing: Beelzemon has a fur jacket ala Squall Leonhart, and he has so much loathing until his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Get It Over With: When defeated by Gallantmon, Beelzemon, after a brief minute of shock at being defeated, screams for him to just finish him off.
"Well, what are you waiting for? Go on. Do it. Do it!!
  • Good Feels Good: He rediscovers his inner goodness after reuniting with his Tamers and deciding to fight to protect his friends.
"Havin' someone to fight for feels pretty good; who knew?"
  • Good Eyes, Evil Eyes: His mega form Beelzemon has red eyes and his personality is completely Ax-Crazy. However, after his Heel–Face Turn, he shortly gains the ability to enter Blast Mode, where his eyes change to green, the same shade as Impmon.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: he gains black angelic ones in Blast Mode.
  • Gosh Dangit To Heck: Impmon's by far the most foul-mouthed character in the show, and the dub finds numerous, colorful ways to give him the most "family friendly" stand-ins for swearing, even going as far as to give him a G-rated F-bomb in one of his most desperate moments.
  • Guns Akimbo: In his digivolved form he wields a pair of mini shotguns.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He has a fiery temper and even sounds like Joe Pesci.
  • Harmless Villain: As Impmon. The worst he does is scare a few humans and throw a couple of insults here and there. As Beelzemon, he transforms into an insane psycho for hire who will do anything to kill the Tamers for Zhuqiaomon.
  • Heaven's Devils: Beelzemon, despite being the Great Demon Lord of gluttony, is hired by Zhuqiaomon, one of the resident Sovereigns of the Digital World, to slay the Tamers in place of Zhuqiaomon's Deva servants.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: He started out as an ineffectual antagonist who got a kick out of annoying and harrassing everyone, but his frequent presence resulted in him slowly being considered almost a friend. However, everything goes south after he suffers such a harsh Humiliation Conga that he accepts a deal with Caturamon to be able to digivolve in exchange for killing the Tamers and their Digimon. When the heroes are on the verge of taking him out in response to his ensuing killing spree, He is spared at the last moment by Jeri, her reasoning being that while she hated him for what he did, she didn't want to see anymore lives be lost. Shaken by this display of compassion and considerably weakened from battle, he wanders off, now guilt-ridden and ashamed of his horrific deeds. Eventually, he reunites with the human children he once had a home with and reconciles with them, and vows to make amends with the Tamers he'd wronged. He becomes a valuable ally in fighting against the D-Reaper alongside the heroes.
  • Heel Realization: Having been spared from death by Gallantmon because of Jeri's pleas for the fighting to stop, he realizes all his desires of power have lead to breaking Jeri's heart. He walks away full of guilt and resentment for the power he had obtained.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Beelzemon is a leather suit-biker.
  • Hellish Pupils: As Beelzemon. It's more obvious when his pupils are contracted.
  • Hero Killer: He unexpectingly kills Leomon in what is possibly the franchise's biggest wake-up call for unsuspecting children.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: After getting a massive dose of Humble Pie from having his life spared by the person he hurt the most, Impmon does a Heel–Face Turn and comes to view himself as totally worthless.
  • Humans Are Bastards: He felt this way for a long time due to his Tamers treating him like a possession. It isn't until Jeri convinces Gallantmon to spare him that he changes his belief.
  • Humiliation Conga: His entire "battle" with Indramon could be seen as this. It was also the catalyst for his own, minor Despair Event Horizon and what led to his Bargain with Heaven.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: Deconstructed. He tries to force himself to be this by taking on Indramon alone. It...doesn't work, which makes him cross the Despair Event Horizon. And that opens up the way for Catsuramon's manipulations, showing that sometimes the lengths people take to invoke this aren't always a good thing.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: In a very conflicted manner. He spends a lot of time telling other digimon how stupid they are for having partners, but he actively seeks them out, tries to coerce them to join in his 'fun' of terrorizing people in the city, and gets very dejected when they ignore him. On one occassion when they invite him to play, he scoffs at first, but then immediately jumps into their fun and games. It eventually becomes clear that a lot of his issues stem from him having a really bad experience living with two toddlers, and he's actually jealous of the good relationships he sees between digimon and their human partners.
  • The Imp: He's not called Impmon for nothing, being a mischievous Virus-type Digimon.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: By the D-Reaper after being unable to rescue Jeri. He isn't killed, but is too wounded to participate in the final battle.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: The fight with Beelzemon starts out like this, with the kids and their digimon spending a lot of time trying to reason with him, appealing to the memories they had of Impmon playing with them. It fails spectacularly and the kids give up on him completely when he kills Leomon. In the end it's showing him mercy when they defeat him that stops him instead.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: A whole herd of Chrysalimon are killed from just a few shots. Justified in that a Mega level Digimon wouldn't be using normal bullets.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Impmon tries so hard to be this. He's extremely disdainful of the idea of digivolving or fighting with assistance, human or otherwise, and loudly criticizes Human-Digimon partnerships. Despite his attitude, Impmon seems to hover around the tamers and their digimon and desires their acknowledgement a little too much. After a period going Drunk on the Dark Side ends with him feeling worthless, guilt-ridden, and borderline suicidal, he only finds peace once he reconciles with and fights alongside the other heroes.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Impmon acts like he thinks he knows it all, and that he's the greatest thing to grace the earth. But as a Rookie level digimon who can't digivolve on his own, he's hardly more than a nuisance that everyone quickly learns to ignore, and Impmon does not take the realization of his reality very well. His desperation to become powerful eventually leads him to make a Bargain with Heaven, with horrific consequences that he later regrets.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Whether it was because he didn't think it through, or just did it upon reflex as a last resort, Beelzemon very quickly realizes that using Leomon's Fist Of the Beast King to save Jeri, when he was the one who killed Leomon, was probably the worst thing he could have done in that moment.
  • Irony: Part of what makes Impmon turn on the heroes is a belief that everyone hates or ignores him because he's a weakling, but he doesn't realize that the kids spent days looking for him out of worry, after he got badly beaten by Indramon.
    • Impmon was the most vocally against human-digimon partnerships for a large part of the story. He ends the series with two human partners.
    • Impmon starts out the series intentionally harrassing humans for shits and giggles. After his Heel–Face Turn, he makes an effort to be civil and polite, yet humans on the street are nonetheless frightened by the sight of a strange furry purple imp like him and he seems very disgruntled by this.
  • It's All My Fault: Impmon was left deeply guilt-ridden for killing Leomon, and does everything in his power to save Jeri from the D-Reaper, recognizing that Jeri might never have been captured if his actions hadn't left her depressed and alone. The D-Reaper took advantage of his guilt and openly mocked Beelzemon, but this didn't stop him from trying to rescue Jeri since by this point he had accepted that what he did was unforgivable, and all he cared about anymore was keeping her from being harmed further.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Most obvious after his Heel–Face Turn, but it's still there even before his Face–Heel Turn.
  • Kick the Dog: Quite literally when he proceeds to beat on an already-wounded Kyubimon.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Even though the series wasn't exactly cheerful and light-hearted before, Beelzemon is the first villain to do something with lasting consequences in the franchise's history. His murder of Leomon is not an off-handed kill that's shrugged off after a few episodes, but rather a traumatizing and horrible event for Takato and Juri that's exploited by the D-Reaper, and sets the remainder of the series into a much, darker tone.
  • Laughing Mad: After defeating Megidramon, Kazu even comments he's a sore winner.
  • Lightning Bruiser: As Beelzemon and while riding his motorcycle.
  • Love Redeems: In a sense. Jeri showing him mercy even after he's killed her partner eventually puts him on the path to redemption, giving him the desire to do everything in his power to make up for what he did. It also drives him to reconcile with the two toddler children he stayed with in the past, and their love for him ends up giving him a Next Tier Power-Up to help the other heroes.
  • Meaningful Name: Impmon is pretty much Exactly What It Says on the Tin: a little imp. Beelzemon is named after Beelzebub, aka the Lord of the Flies and another moniker for the Devil. Beelzemon’s actions in the digital world are among the most brutally horrific of any digimon villian. ‘Lord of the Flies’ is also an allegory for a person’s descent into savagery, which is exactly what happens to Impmon. He eventually subverts this though, with Beelzemon becoming The Atoner.
  • More Dakka: Beelzemon Blast Mode upgrades from akimbo double-barrelled pistols to a huge Arm Cannon (though he keeps his previous weapons as backups). Even moreso when said arm cannon started out as a harmless toy ray gun.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He snaps out of being Drunk on the Dark Side when Jeri shows him mercy despite him killing Leomon. He's left feeling disgusted with himself, wanting absolutely nothing to do with the power he's obtained, and viewing his actions as 'beyond forgiveness'.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Beelzemon. Not to mention the original Japanese name for his Blast Mode arm cannon: "Death Slinger". In the American dub, Bowdlerised into "Corona Blaster". Though, once one remembers that a Corona is the only part of the sun visible during a solar eclipse, the name becomes awesome again.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Beelzebumon tends to sneak in new abilities as needed to get himself out of tight corners, like being able to stretch his arms to get hold of Makuramon and afterwards using techniques of digimon whose data he's loaded (which ostensibly any Digimon can do but only Beelzebumon actually does).
  • Never Learned to Read: Apparently not, as he spends part of an episode trying to get someone to read a note for him.
  • The Nicknamer: In the American dub, at least. He called Renamon "Foxy", "Fox Face", or "Toots", depending on his mood, used "Pineapple Head" for Guilmon, "Helicopter Head" for Terriermon, and "Cream Puff" for Calumon. These became almost like Terms of Endangerment when he first became Beelzemon; "Pineapple Head" doesn't sound nearly as silly and innocent when it's said with a gun in your face.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: In the English dub, his voice actor is clearly emulating Joe Pesci, with everything that implies.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: After his Despair Event Horizon and his deal with Caturamon. After evolving into Beelzemon, he kills Leomon and actually defeats Megidramon.
  • Not So Above It All: In the camping episode he shows up to taunt the Tamers and their Digimon. When they invite him to play with them in the river he, taken aback, refuses stating that he'd never lower himself to play with them nicely... then he gets splashed...
  • Oh, Crap!: For a moment he's clearly relieved and thrilled when he busts through the D-Reaper's last line of defense and is in arm's reach of Jeri. Then he's confused and frustrated when she's just standing there like a statue instead of taking his aid. But when she whimpers that he's not Leomon, the look in his eye and tone of his voice is pure shock and horror, realizing that all he's done is traumatize her more.
  • Odd Friendship: he has a semi-antagonistic, semi-friendly 'connection' with Renamon throughout the series. He also picks on Calumon like a playground bully or an older sibling, which eventually turns into something much friendlier when they actively team up to save Jeri from the D-Reaper.
  • Pet the Dog: In the Digital World, he actually encounters Calumon before the Tamers do, but after considering him for a moment decides to just let him go. Whether it was genuine kindness or just not thinking Calumon was worth killing is up for debate.
  • Playing with Fire: As Impmon, he can summon and throw balls of flame.
  • Power Copying: Of the Digimon whose data he's loaded. He used Makuramon's Primal Orb attack to steal Rapidmon and Taomon's data, and later the "Fist of the Beast King" in an attempt to rescue Jeri.
  • Power High: After becoming Beelzemon, he is obsessed with loading data of other digimon in order to prove just how strong he is.
  • Psychic Link: Has an unusual "bond" with Renamon that acts as a minor version of this.
  • The Prankster: Impmon's favorite hobby is messing with humans and the digimon partnered with humans.
  • Psycho for Hire: Caturamon and Zhuqiaomon turns him from the harmless, mischievious Impmon into the outright murderous Beelzemon as their last stand against the Tamers.
  • Psychotic Smirk: As a villain, Beelzemon has two facial expressions—scowling and crazy grinning.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Not quite for Impmon, but trying to redeem himself to Jeri before being struck down by the D-Reaper is the last time we ever see Beelzemon.
  • Redemption Promotion: After reconciling with Ai and Mako, he unlocks Blast Mode. Particularly significant since at the time this occurs, they aren't even officially partnered with him yet; that's just how strongly they care about each other.
  • Regretful Traitor: Despite a rocky start, Impmon had actually slowly begun to get along with the heroes. But after being the receiving end of a Humiliation Conga, Impmon ends up making a Bargain with Heaven in exchange for power. He goes on a murderous rampage, only to be stopped when Jeri shows him mercy, even though he'd killed her partner. He ends up deeply regretting everything he did to harm the children and their digimon, with Jeri's distraught, heartbroken face haunting him for the rest of the season.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: As Beelzemon. His eyes turn green when he's in Blast Mode, symbolizing his Character Development and change of heart.
  • Roaring Rampage of Rescue: Guilt-ridden over killing Leomon, he becomes determined to save Jeri at any cost from the D-Reaper, using a combination of rage, desperation, and sheer force of will to break through enemy defenses and reach her. It ends up becoming a conflicted, but Unwanted Rescue both because of Jeri's lingering guilt and the D-Reaper does recognize him for killing Leomon.
  • Sanity Slippage: After becoming Beelzemon, his ability to be reasonable starts to rapidly degrade as he revels in the power that has been given to him.]] It eventually goes to his head so badly that he starts to believe he can defeat the Sovereign Digimon, even though the Sovereign are far and away among the most powerful digimon, and it was literally a Sovereign who bestowed him his power in the first place.
  • Satellite Character: Subverted. Impmon is a rare example in a Mon series where he, the monster, is the primary character who a narrative revolves around, rather than the humans he's partnered with. Justified in that his humans are children no older than four.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Averted. He has a red scarf but he is not a fighter. When he finally evolves and Took a Level in Badass, it's tied around his arm.
  • Ship Tease: Mildly with Renamon, moreso in the dub but still present in the original. He pretty much starts hitting on her the moment he meets her.
Impmon: Aw, ain't that sweet? A Digi-babe pining in the moonlight.
  • Social Darwinist: Just like the Devas and Zhuqiaomon, he follows the policy of the digital world that only the strongest can survive, and that power represents strength over weaker Digimon.
  • The Starscream: At the height of his Power High, he claimed he'd load the data of the Soverign, the very digimon that had given him his ability to digivolve. What's more, when Gallantmon destroyed Caturamon, the digimon he made his deal with, he gladly absorbed his data without hesitation. He gets no punishment from Zhuqiaomon over this and the two never interact.
  • Tantrum Throwing: Impmon pretty easily breaks into petty tantrums when things aren't going his way. He also quickly resorts to producing and flinging his little Bada Boom fireballs at anyone in the vicinity.
  • Take My Hand!: Fails this with Jeri after he uses one of Leomon's attacks to break the D-Reaper's core. Seeing Leomon's image replaced by the one of the person who killed him had to have been a huge shock for her. In the manga version of that scene, Jeri attempts to take his hand, but he is cut down before she can.
  • Terrifying Rescuer: His attempt to rescue Jeri fails in part the D-Reaper recognizes that last she saw him, he was literally trying to murder her and her friends. Even if he hadn't gone on a killing spree though, Beelzemon's demonic appearance means he's not exactly the sort of fellow you'd immediately trust to have good intentions.
  • That Man Is Dead: Says this about Impmon after his Face–Heel Turn. In the original Japanese, he flat-out says "The owner of that name is dead!"
  • Took a Level in Badass: When he becomes Beelzemon, who easily defeats Megidramon (because Takato was hesistating) and nearly defeats Gallantmon if not for Guardromon pulling off a last minute distraction.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He becomes a lot nicer after his Heel–Face Turn, exemplified in the way he interacts with his Tamers and Calumon, and the way he helps the other kids and fights desperately to get Jeri to safety in the D-Reaper arc.
  • Tough Spikes and Studs: Beezlemon is a Badass Biker and Blood Knight. His attire includes steel tipped boots, each with three spikes.
  • Tragic Villain: His desire to digivolve pushed him into becoming Beelzemon and killing Leomon. He later becomes a Tragic Hero when he is struck down by the D-Reaper after failing to save Jeri.
  • Trying Not to Cry: When his kids apologize for their previous mistreatment of him, he turns away and can't look them in the eye as tears begin to stream down his face.
  • Tsundere: Has traces of this, especially before he's properly friends with the heroes. He didn't mean to tell Takato about Sandiramon, he was just making fun of him! And he definitely didn't want to go swimming with the other Digimon... Even afterwards he has trouble accepting any sort of goodwill without making some kind of wisecrack.
  • Verbal Tic: In the dub, Impmon often ends his sentences with 'ba-boom' or 'bada-boom'. The latter is also his main attack name, but he uses the phrase outside of combat.
    • As Beelzemon, he has a habit of repeating the last part of some of his sentences for emphasis.
"No... to have power IS to be strong! I'll keep loading data until no one can stop me! No one! NO ONE!
  • Villainous BSoD: After being spared by the Tamers, he wanders the Digital World in a daze, horrified and disgusted by everything he'd done. He was so distraught that he eventually let a group of significantly weaker digimon pile on him and attack without bothering to defend himself. He was left regressed back into his Impmon form, left in a crumpled heap too drained to move by the time he was found. He doesn't break out of it until he's brought back to the real world by Rika and Renamon and reunited with his own Tamers.
  • Villain Baal: His Mega form, Beelzemon (Beelzebumon in Japanese) derives its name from Beelzebub, the Lord of the Flies, whose name is a corruption of Baal.
  • Villainous Glutton:
    • Initially as Beelzemon, he becomes obsessed with loading as much data as possible to become stronger. His associated sin as a Demon Lord is, appropriately, gluttony.
    • Arguably, after his Heel–Face Turn back into heroism, he becomes a glutton for punishment instead, growing borderline suicidal in his self-loathing and desire to make amends.
  • Villainous Harlequin: He's a laughable prankster character whose design is basically a devilish imp with ears that have been bent into the shape of a court jester hat. Subverted once he digivolves where he's no longer laughable so much as one of the most horrific villains in all of Digimon history, and his design is themed around being an edgy bike gangster.
  • Walking Spoiler: Just mentioning his evolution into Beelzemon gives away a good chunk of his character arc.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: Deconstructed. After becoming Beezlemon, this is essentially his driving force...and he becomes completely and utterly drunk on it to the point of ultimately thinking he could kill a Sovereign...and as a result loses all sense of morality and commits heinous atrocities that, once he has the power high beaten out of him and is only spared by one of his victims, he now has to live with the consequences of. Even when he becomes a hero, the actions he performed while on his power high continue to haunt him.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: The instant evolution From Nobody to Nightmare leaves him with more power than he's ever had in his life, and more power than anyone else he knows has ever had in their lives. He handles this responsibly.
  • World's Strongest Man: Upon defeating Megidramon, he claimed he'd become the most powerful Digimon, even aiming to load the Sovereign.
