Misused: Ill Girl

Go To

To-do list:

  • Move examples of attractive guys/cute girls with a debilitating sicknesses from Ill Girl, Ill Boy, Ill Child, and Ill Man to Delicate and Sickly and remove ones that don't (such as examples that are simply about a character with an illness with none of the trope's connotations).

    Original post
Ill Girl is a trope describing a character who is debilitatingly ill. Important distinguishing factors are that the character is often a young and innocent child, the ill girl remains cute, despite her illness, and that her illness sends another character(s) off on a mission to cure her or at least ease her suffering.
A Wick Check determined that the trope suffered misuse under a variety of categories, including simply "an ill character”, with only eight checked examples determined as correct usage (9.5%). Both Related.IllGirl and Related.IllBoy were checked due to their large number of wicks, though there are also redirects for Ill Child (31) and Ill Man (16). To summarize the findings found here:
  • 8/84 Correct Usage or 9.5%
  • 6/84 Only Debilitatingly Ill or 7%
  • 17/84 Just sick/weak or 20%
  • 5/84 Character is Mentally Ill or 6%
  • 12/84 Has a disability or 14%
  • 15/84 Other Misuse or 18%
  • 4/84 Unclear or 4.75%
  • 17/84 ZCE or 20%

Combining the various misuse categories, this trope has a 90% misuse rate. The laconic isn’t the worst description in the world, summarized as "Someone, usually female, who’s debilitatingly sick." but I think it is probably one of the reasons for some misuse. A common theme in misuse is describing a character who was sick in the past or before the work takes place, often as a freebie in addition to Sickly Child Grew Up Strong. Tightening the restrictions and/or making them clearer may help alleviate future misuse.
I know renaming is usually a last resort, but I also believe the trope name itself is a source of misuse. It is a cutesy, close rhyme title, but it may be too broad, especially with the trend of swapping out "girl" for the appropriate descriptor (i.e. "boy", "man", "woman"), which doesn't necessarily violate the How to Write an Example rule on not altering trope titles in example lists (gender is an exception) but still not great because of the short trope title, so it'll still affect alphabetization.

Just to let you know, I removed the Firefly examples from the DelicateAndSickly.Live Action TV page. Since they made up the bulk of the "Mixed Examples" section, there is now only one work listed as a Mixed Example. note

[up]Now that you mention that, have on-page examples been cleaned up at all aside from that example? When moving a page for a renamed trope, I don't always go through the examples, and either way, I always move the page before any cleanup is done.

For archive's sake, posting the check here.

Wicks Checked: 84/83

    open/close all folders
     Correct Usage 8/84
  • Anime.Speed Grapher: Kagura, who has a brain tumor and isn't expected to live for long. She lives, in the end.
  • Characters.Azure Dreams: Basically what [Cherrl Child]'s all about. She's been sick with an unknown disease her entire life, and can only be cured by a herb found in the higher levels of the Monster Tower.
  • Film.Excision 2012: Grace, who's dying of cystic fibrosis.
  • Film. When Father Was Away On Business: When living with his mom and dad in exile in Zvornik, Malik has his first case of puppy love with Masha, a girl his age. Unfortunately, she's suffering from an unspecified but terminal blood disease. Eventually she's whisked away to the hospital and Malik says that he never saw her again, but her father came back wearing a black armband.
  • Literature.Goddess: Subverted. Julie was a great beauty and proud of it in her prime, but the framing story finds her looks having been ravaged by whatever illness is killing her. She's weak, barely able to walk, and clearly no longer the striking woman she used to be. Correct use of a subversion anyway.
  • TearJerker.Wild Knights Gulkeeva: "The Howl Through My Fangs" is all about Greyfus befriending a terminally Ill Girl named Shiori. You know she's gonna die at some point, but what made the episode heartwrenching was when a Darknoid attacked the hospital she was staying in, which helped speed up her death. After desperately trying to save her, Greyfus fails, and he ends up breaking down sobbing after they share one last heartwarming conversation.
  • VideoGame.Dark Elf Historia: Ruse has long been a bit sickly because of his past as an orphan, but if Fraylia manages to finish the quest to kill Danny the Orc without failing any of the other missions, Ruse will suddenly fall deathly ill with "Neysterbey Syndrome", forcing Fraylia to suspend her career until she tracks down the cure.
  • VideoGame. My Time At Portia: Ginger, the mayor's daughter, who suffers from an unstated illness and is seldom able to leave home during the day as a result.

     Character is Debilitatingly Ill 6/84
  • Characters.Code Geass Chinese Federation: [Li Xingke] Whatever disease he has that makes him cough blood and experience bouts of weakness. Character is an adult and no attempts are being made to lessen his illness.
  • Characters.Greed Fall: [Constantin d'Orsay] He falls victim to the Malichor shortly after arriving on Teer Fradee. It's eventually revealed that he was poisoned by Mad Scientist Doctor Asili. Character is an adult and his illness results in disfigurement.
  • Characters. The Walking Dead Video Game Michonne: [Sophia Fairbanks] According to Paige, she had a serious heart condition. One of the photos inside the house shows her wearing an oxygen tube. Her condition is why she decided to commit suicide: she knew that without the treatment she needed, she would likely die a slow and painful death, and she wanted to spare herself and her family from the suffering it would cause. Character already deceased, and an adult.
  • Characters. The Witchs House: [Ellen] Rare villainous example. She has an unnamed disease with pretty horrific descriptions of what it does to her her entire life. Prior to the events of the game, she was so ill that it got to the point she couldn't get out of her own bed. This was what drove her to trick Viola into swapping bodies with her, just so she could have a body that wouldn't hurt. Fails Beauty Is Never Tarnished
  • Film.October Sky: The kind and encouraging schoolteacher, Miss Riley, who is revealed to suffer from Hodgkin's Disease during the third act of the film, giving the Rocket Boys that extra emotional push to pull off their last, climactic, rocket launch. Character is an adult and no attempts are being made to lessen her illness.
  • VideoGame.Mystery Case Files: Emma, in Ravenhearst, although it turns out she was actually being poisoned. Character is an adult and nothing is being done to help her.

     Character is Just Sick/Weak 17/84
  • Actually Not a Vampire: In God Child, the current inhabitants of the Weatherby Castle Darque and Justine. Particularly Justine has a lot of hints, with having a tendency to inherit elongated, sharp canines, and she is also very weak and feels faint when she is subjected to sunlight...
  • Anime.Aquarion Evol: A weak constitution is said to what keeps Shrade off the battlefield despite his useful ability to manipulate brainwaves with music. Character is simply weak. He is also an adult, which disqualifies him.
  • Anime.Beyblade Burst: Daigo's little brother Ryota is in the hospital, though his condition isn't serious. He's finally discharged in episode 37. Character is just sick. Also, no plot to help him since he's not seriously ill.
  • Characters.A3: It's never fully explained, but Kaoru was born with a weak constitution that makes it difficult for him to play sports.
  • Characters.Ace Attorney Witnesses And Other Characters Trials And Tribulations: [Viola Cadaverini] looks like one given her pale and creepy/sickly appearance as well as the bandage on her head. She's a bit of a subversion though since the bandage is due to an injury and it is implied that she is just a frail woman by nature, not an illness. Example outright admits character is weak and has a physical injury, not an illness.
  • Characters. All Dogs Go To Heaven: [Anne-Marie] Near the end of the film, she contracts what Flo suspects to be pneumonia. Running out into a rainstorm after overhearing Charlie declare he didn't really care about her doesn't help.
  • Characters. All Grown Up: [Kira Finster] In "R.V. Having Fun Yet? Part 1". Vomit Discretion Shots everywhere. Also fails character being a child requirement.
  • Characters.A Centaurs Life: [Suetsumu Mitama] gets tired easily, and she's prone to getting fevers if she overexerts herself.
  • Characters.Bludgeoning Angel Dokurochan: Sabato Mihashigo, frequently, particularly in season two. It's mostly just a cold, but it's exacerbated by her less-than-ideal living conditions. Like just about everything else in this show, though, this is Played for Laughs.
  • Characters.Bionicle Legends: In Mata Nui Online Game, [Huki] falls ill from the comet balls that Ahkmou was selling. Character has food poisoning. Does not fit trope.
  • Characters.Extra Life: During the classes' cameos as Ultimate Despair, [Nagito Komaeda]'s sick and delirious with a fever.
  • Characters.South Park The Boys: [Stan Marsh] Downplayed. He doesn't get diseases often, but he has the most sensitive stomach from the group, considering he is the most prone to vomiting. This trait isn't as prevalent now, considering he used to vomit a lot more often, especially when around his crush Wendy. Also, in "Sexual Harassment Panda" it's been revealed that he has asthma considering he had an inhaler, but he is never shown suffering from any symptoms and it's never brought up again.
  • Characters.Warrior Cats Shadow Clan: [Littlecloud] In Rising Storm, he gets a disease that was spreading around ShadowClan, but Cinderpelt treats him. He gets another disease in Night Whispers.
  • Literature.Dracula: Lucy when Dracula starts feeding from her; her mother could also count. Character is an adult, weak from actions of villain, not debilitatingly ill.
  • Series.Humans: Leo. His synthetic charging port is an open, infected wound on his stomach.
  • VisualNovel.Eden They Were Only Two On The Planet: There are rumors that Sion is reaching the limit of how long felixes can live. Elica shows signs as well, but is holding up better than Sion, despite being older. It's implied that she might have just been unaware of how weak she was, though. Character is weak due to dying.
  • VisualNovel.X Note: Gender-flipped with Oure having diabetes.

     Character Is Mentally Ill 5/84
  • Film.Innerspace: Jack believes he is one of this. As it happens, he's the ultimate hypochondriac, to the point he might really give himself a heart-attack by stressing out over having a heart attack.
  • Literature.I Am Not Esther: Magdalene in the third book, but only because she's so stressed that it makes her physically ill. She often describes it as her stomach and/or heart hurting. On one occasion, she digs a hole in the sand, making her hands bleed and doesn't remember how she got to that point. Later on, she is checked over by a doctor and told that it was lucky she left the Faith before she became seriously ill. Mentally ill.
  • Literature. The Moviegoer: Kate, of the "psychologically delicate" style. Mentally ill.
  • Series.Sherlock Holmes Percy Phelps, the client in "The Naval Treaty" is an old school friend of Watson's. Watson remembers him as a delicate boy, and when he becomes their client he's just recovering from a nervous breakdown that's lasted almost ten weeks. Mentally ill.
  • ShootTheShaggyDog.Western Animation: The "Transmutate" episode of Beast Wars. A gentle, horribly misshapen, mentally feeble, bird-like Transformer is pursued by Silverbolt and Rampage because Silverbolt is the epitome of the Knight in Shining Armor archetype and wanted to protect her, while Rampage sees a kindred spirit because she was a twisted freak. In the end she tries to get between them with her shield when she sees them fighting, and gets destroyed. Also fails Beauty Is Never Tarnished.

     Character Has A Disability 12/84

     Other Misuse 15/84
  • Characters.A 3 Autumn: [Azami Izumida] His mother is an Ill Girl who passed away when Azami was 5.
  • Characters.Ajin: [Eriko Nagai] She has a rare, incurable disease that forces her to live in the hospital. However, she's no wisp of insubstantial sweetness who is way too good for this sinful world. And, she defies that aspect of the trope. She's sick. She's a girl. And, any other ideas you have about this are your problem if you make them hers. Example admits she doesn’t fit the trope. Character is debilitatingly ill.
  • Characters.Magik: More exactly, she falls victim to the Legacy Virus, which makes her Colossus's dead little sister. For a while anyway. It's... complicated. Reading other tropes about her, it sounds like she died early and most of her screen time is after she comes back from the dead, and she's not ill then.
  • Characters.Marvel Heroes RPG: [Marty's] power is taking on others' physical injuries, so this comes with the territory. Not sick, just injured. Might fit under Blessed with Suck.
  • Characters.Puella Magi Madoka Magica Homura Akemi: The period of time she has been looping was the first few weeks where she was mainstreamed; before transferring to Madoka's class, she spent most of her life in the hospital because of a heart condition. Fails plot requirement. Also Sickly Child Grew Up Strong.
  • Characters.Ru Pauls Drag Race UK Series 2: [Ginny Lemon] She suffers from fibromyalgia, which prevents her from comfortably wearing tall high-heels in her looks. Real life troping. Trope is NRLEP. I suspect the other Ru Paul wicks are the same.
  • Characters.Tales Of Graces: [Cheria Barnes] Has a congenital heart disease that leaves her with a weak constitution. She recovers due to the incident that also granted her healing powers. Actually Sickly Child Grew Up Strong
  • Characters. They Are My Noble Masters: [Kuonji Miyu] Miyu is said to be in perfect physical health, but every now and then she feels faint and insists on being alone. Her physical health really is fine, but when she remembers the death of her parents she needs to seclude herself. Character is not ill
  • Characters. The Vow: [Lady Amelia] She first appears when she's gravely ill and she dies off in the next chapter. Misuse. Character dies early and it’s not a plot point.
  • Film.Nine Lives 2002: Lucy, who gets stabbed early on and spends most of the film motionless on the couch. Character is physically injured.
  • LightNovel.Ground Control To Psychoelectric Girl: Parodied in Maekawa's introduction. She isn't sick, just hilariously unfit such that she gets dizzy if she raises her hands above her head for a few seconds. Makoto is enthralled.
  • Literature.Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Ariana, Dumbledore's sister, became half-insane because she refused to use magic after a traumatic experience where she was attacked by three Muggle boys who found out she was a witch. Her family put it about that she just had poor physical health to avoid attracting attention, leading many people to theorize that she was a Squib, when in reality she would have magic exploding out of her when she couldn't keep it in anymore. It's misuse, but doesn't really fit any of the other categories here.
  • MassEffect2.Tropes G To M: A quarian in Eternity on Illium expresses irritation with how everyone she dates thinks "Ooh, she's vulnerable, she could get sick!"
  • SlasherSmile.Anime And Manga: Two teens of mass destruction of Out Code lapse into this when their real personalities are exposed (Psycho for Hire and Manipulative Bitch, respectively). Interestingly, both of these characters were frail-looking girls. The Mad Scientist who gave them their powers seems to owe his look to Dr. Tomoe.
  • Trivia. The Spoony Experiment: Throughout much of 2015, Spoony didn't release any reviews. His only regular posting were Counter Monkeys, Live Wire (his live video game streams, now on YouTube), and the occasional Wrestle! Wrestle! (which he hasn't done since Night of Champions 2015). His first review in several months, Street Hunter, released in February 2016, has him lampshade the long period between reviews, by opening on the line "Kept you waiting, huh?" This was his last video until an episode of Counter Monkey in November 2016, with his next video, a vlog review of The Last Jedi, not being released until December 2017. He has acknowledged that Real Life health problems are the cause. As of 2018 however, he has once again slipped into disappearing. This time, letting his website go down and not rejoining twitter after being banned. Real Life troping. Trope is NRLEP.

     Unclear 4/84

     ZCE 17/84
  • Characters.Ajin: [Yu Tosaki] His fiancée.
  • Characters.Arrietty: [Shō] Suffers from a palpitation.
  • Characters.Class Of 3000: [Kam Chin]
    • In "Love is in the Hair...Net", he mentions he has heartworms and had to take medication.
    • "Study Buddies" reveals he was born without sweat glands
  • Characters.Eden: [Elizabeth "Liz" Fields] The daughter of Dr. Weston Fields. It's her death that spurs him into becoming Zero.
  • Characters.God Eater 2: As a result of being exposed to the infectious Red Rain during the middle of the story. Currently ZCE, but the Red Rain is a standard Black Plague. So likely would fall into Character is Debilitatingly Ill category
  • Characters.Hamatora: [Birthday] Even if the symptoms don't show. Big ZCE but from what I gather, this might be more fitting for Blessed with Suck.
  • Characters.Haruhi Suzumiya: [Yuki Nagato] In stories set after the movie.
  • Characters. In Spectre: [Rika Sakuragawa] Is constantly in the hospital.
  • Characters. The Sandman Humans : [Chantal and Zelda] Zelda in The Kindly Ones. And there is nothing pretty about it. ZCE but given the second sentence, likely misuse on account of failing Beauty Is Never Tarnished. Also not a child, so falls into Character is Debilitatingly Ill.
  • Super 8: [Martin] He has a very weak stomach.
  • Film.Maggie: Only this time [Maggie]'s slowly turning into a zombie-like creature. Currently weirdly worded ZCE, but based off of description and page image, the Necroambulist Virus fails the Beauty Is Never Tarnished requirement so, Character Is Debilitatingly Ill.
  • GuardiansOfTheGalaxy.Gotg Tropes D To J: Meredith Quill dies in the beginning of the movie. ZCE but probably misuse considering she dies when the movie starts.
  • LightNovel.Parallel World Pharmacy: Falma's patients, naturally. Most of them don't remain this way for long, though. ZCE but sounds like a case of Character Is Just Sick.
  • Literature.Heidi: Klara, also a Lonely Rich Kid.
  • Manga.Hiyokoi: Hiyori. Turns out that she's not ill. She just has really really really bad luck. ZCE, but sounds like misuse.
  • SuperWeight.Video Games: [A-M under Child of Light] Type -1: The Duke, the elderly elemental. Just ZCE. Also "Ill Man", so age disqualifies.

  • Delicate and Sickly: The music video for "Full Moon" has a wan, handsome young man who is bedridden with an illness that subjects him to coughing fits. Throughout most the video, he can only blearily watch the goings-on, lacking the strength to even sit up straight; when he tries getting up, he falls to the floor. A flashback shows him in a wheelchair, looking out the window.

Yes, there were quite a lot examples with Ill Boy potholed to Ill Girl, or "gender inverted" Ill Girl's, or just male characters listed under Ill Girl without comment. I guess, it's because Ill Girl predates the other ones.
