Osaka Team

    Tsuneo Nikaido

Tsuneo Nikaido, "Virgin-kun/The Nerd"

  • A Day in the Limelight: A whole chapter is dedicated to him, which covers everything he went throught after his first battle, how he became the only remaining team member (the others chose to leave) and we also discover that he was also at the Italy mission, which granted him the points to revive Anzu.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Using the Nurarihyon Alien's severed head to disintegrate several of monsters in its own brood.
  • Fish out of Water: The Osaka Arc is his first time as a Gantz player. The only reason he survives is because he and his friend were smart enough to wear the suits, and because more than a few people take the time to save him.
  • Took a Level in Badass: When he managed to survive the Italian mission with only a frightened little girl as a teammate and still earn enough points to resurrect Anzu.
  • Undying Loyalty: Went out of his way to gather enough points to revive Anzu, so she can be reunited with Kato again.

    Anzu Yamasaki

Anzu Yamasaki

Voiced by: Mao Ichimichi (Movie) (Japanese), Cristina Valenzuela (Movie) (English)

  • Hero-Worshipper: Like The Nerd, Anzu is so astounded by Kato's bravery that she not only joins his cause, but falls in love with him on the same night that they meet.
  • Irony: Of all the Osaka members, Anzu lives possibly the most morally ambiguous normal life. While most of the Psycho for Hire types you read about earlier are shown to be mild mannered members of the workforce in their normal lives, the sweet and attractive little Camper Anzu is shown to be passively neglectful toward her son so she can focus on earning money. By illustrating porn. In her living room.
  • Morality Pet: Love for her son compels her to survive. Love for Kato compels her to be heroic.
  • The Oathbreaker: Dies to prevent Kato's death, even though she made him swear earlier not to die so that they and their families could all live together. They each tragically lampshade this as she is being killed.

    Oka Hachiro

Oka Hachirō

Voiced by: Kendou Kobayashi (Movie) (Japanese), Doug Erholtz (Movie) (Japanese)

  • Badass Bookworm: His knowledge of strategy makes Oka a highly skilled warrior.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Uses the most powerful weapons and armor Gantz has to offer not to protect the weak innocent, but to increase his odds in battle despite the fact that he is plenty dangerous without all of it.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Apparently ripped apart by Nurarihyon. We only see that he's missing everything below his chest.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He's cleared seven missions with 100 points. At the time, it was considered next to impossible to get more than a few points each mission.
  • The Ghost: Remains invisible for most of the game, letting the rest of his team eliminate the lesser aliens and draw out the greater ones so that he can collect on the points.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: It turns out that the secret to surviving a long time in Gantz is to back off when an alien is obviously too powerful for you, and just run out the clock or hope someone else kills it. Who knew? (It doesn't save him this time, because the alien is a Blood Knight who wants to keep fighting him, but it's almost certainly how he survived so long in the first place.)
  • Lack of Empathy: Does not feel the least bit bad about leaving the scared and uncertain Tokyo Team to deal with the monster even he can't kill.
  • Powered Armor: Oka is the first player seen wearing the Gantz version, as well as piloting its towering mechanized war machine.
  • Straight Edge Evil: In the Osaka spinoffs, Oka appears to be a well-adjusted office worker by day, quiet and efficient. Though, he is clearly bored, and even more clearly exhilarated when he receives the signal for his next and last mission.
  • The Worf Effect: It appears that Oka (who has already taken down a Godzilla level monster) can be the only one capable of defeating the Nurarihyon Alien that has so far eliminated three of his best teammates, dominated half of the Tokyo Team, and proven itself unkillable. Even with all his wonderful toys, this turns out to not be the case. Since both got a lot of buildup, this avertings it for the monster, but plays it straight for Oka himself.
  • Worthy Opponent: Nurarihyon considers him to be something like this, claiming "he was fun" when confronted with Kaze's "predictable" martial arts. It even abandons its fight with the Tokyo Team to hunt Oka throughout Osaka, and destroys several buildings in the process of killing him.

    Kyō Hanaki

Kyō Hanaki

    Kazuo Kuwabara

Kazuo Kuwabara

  • Full-Frontal Assault: After losing his suit and weapons, Kuwabara literally fucked the Nurarihyon alien's face.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After using his considerable abilities to violate extraterrestrial species, he loses his arms, legs, and, possibly, his genitals in his fight with The Nurarihyon Alien. Because he survived, the damage only lasted as long as the hunt itself.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: To the Osaka Team. The Tokyo Team would disagree about the "lovable" part. And the aliens would strongly disagree.
  • Lack of Empathy: His reaction to The Nerd now left alone in the Osaka Team: "Oh, right. Guess you're kinda fucked next time, huh?"
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Legitimately finds the aliens he rapes to be hot, especially Nurarihyon's blob of beautiful women.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Kuwabara's pretty levelheaded and laid back for a guy who can slaughter one alien as he's raping another.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He's a white-haired rapist, which contrasts sharply with his civilian life as a legitimately beloved middle-school English teacher.

    Nobuo Muroya

Nobuo "Nobu/Knob" Muroya

Voiced by: Makoto Izubuchi (Movie) (Japanese), Keith Silverstein (Movie) (English)

  • The Leader: Describes himself as such, though, Oka is the most dangerous and experienced member of the team.
  • Psycho for Hire: Well, sort of. In his civilian life, he has little problem working in a fast-food restraunt with his buddy Shimaki.

    Joji Shimaki

Joji Shimaki/"George"

Voiced by: Masaki Sumitani (Movie) (Japanese), Steve Heiser (Movie) (English)

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: He gets caught and consumed by Nurarihyon's form (a giant and bizarre mass of naked women). Though, it does spit out his head.
  • Psycho for Hire: Well, sort of. In his civilian life, he has little problem with working in a fast-food restaraunt with his buddy Knob.

Tetsuo Hara, Sanpei Taira and Susumu Kimura, the Sadist Trio

Tetsuo Hara, Sanpei Taira and Susumu Kimura, the Sadist Trio

  • Dirty Coward: Just as Tetsuo is given the chance to run away and live, he tries to stab the infinitely more powerful alien in the back. And fails miserably, losing his head.
  • Killed Off for Real: All three die brutally. Tetsuo and Susumu are killed by the Samurai aliens, while Sanpei is cut down by Hikawa.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Given their title, the manner of their deaths, i.e. being chopped apart, was very fitting.

    Sumiko Yamada

Sumiko Yamada

  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has an ample chest, which her team's Gantz very much appreciates.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Despite the fact that we see her do nothing but stand around and run away, she is still able to earn enough points to buy her freedom after she survives.
  • Dirty Coward: Like Miho, Sumiko is perfectly fine with letting the tough guys do the work while she watches, and abandoning the fight when it looks like they will lose.
  • Undying Loyalty: Subverted, unlike with The Nerd and Anzu. Sumiko (and Miho) finished the hunt with just over 100 points and, having lost her boyfriend, opted to erase her memories and be released from the hunt...instead of using those 100 points to revive him.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When Knob, Shimaki, and Kuwabara are taken down.

    Miho Yamanaka

Miho Yamanaka

  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Miho is also seen doing nothing but standing, screaming, and running, and still has enough points to buy her freedom after she survives.
  • Dirty Coward: Like Sumiko, Miho is perfectly fine with letting the tough guys do the work while she watches, and abandoning the fight when it looks like they will lose.
  • Undying Loyalty: Subverted, unlike with The Nerd and Anzu. Miho (and Sumiko) finished the hunt with just over 100 points, but because her boyfriend Knob is dead, she opts to erase her memory and be released...instead of just using those 100 points to revive him.

Katastrophe Team

    Hyōma Takeda

Hyōma Takeda

  • Fanboy: He is ecstatic to find out Reika is also on the team and says he was a devoted fan of her during her Idol career.

    Ryūji Maeshima

Ryūji Maeshima

  • Loners Are Freaks: He rarely talks to anyone, shows next to emotion, and is, overall, a very scary-looking person even though he is one of the heroes.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: As he dies, Ryuuji is happy and smiling for the first time.

    Mokoto Sekine

Mokoto Sekine

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Suffers one of the cruelest and most unusual deaths when he is hit by one of the Pandora's Box spores, turning him into a violent mutating mass of his own extremities, clothing, and weapons.

    Kaiji Yoshikawa

Kaiji Yoshikawa

  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Killed immediately after delivering some serious blows to the nigh-invincible Eeva Gund, including cutting off some of his fingers and letting everyone know that they can beat him.
  • Wham Line: "Gantz can't bring people back to life anymore. It can't heal injuries either. Nothing like that."
