Five-Man Band has been receiving a lot of misuse. As was concluded in this TRS thread, it needs a massive cleanup. There are over 30 subpages and almost 3500 wicks to be gone through. This thread is for organizing the cleanup effort and discussing any and all examples to be added and cut.
What is correct use of the trope?
- The characters must be part of a team, that is, a team dynamic must exist between members of the band.
- There must be exactly 5 team members
Format for examples
In an effort to cut down on misuse as well as get rid of all the Zero Context Examples, we are trying to shift all examples to the following format. If you are familiar with a current work and can do a writeup for it, please do so and post it here.
The sandbox for sorting examples is here.

I mean, like I said, The Chick doesn't exist outside of Five-Man Band. That's how it's defined. It needs that trope in order to exist. So while I agree that the concepts are literally the same except The Chick has some weird limitations, as defined, The Chick is a much narrower shell of what The Heart is.
This might seem like I'm just being pedantic, but the weird reliance on FMB for The Chick is one of the biggest issues with it, and we can't overlook it by saying "It's just The Heart".

Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessWhat I was getting at is that The Heart covers the same territory as The Chick and doesn't have the same gender limitation. I suppose you could have a trope about female characters being The Heart more often than male characters, but we would have to redefine The Chick.
Edited by RustBeard on Mar 24th 2022 at 4:40:12 AM
I mean, we're on the same side. I also agree that they should just be the exact same thing and if anything they should just be merged together. I'm not saying what The Chick should be, I'm just saying what it's currently and has always been defined as.

Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessIf The Chick is supposed to be always part of a Five-Man Band, why do most of its (on-page) examples not mention an FMB?

Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!Misuse, basically.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessAnother stab at Psych
Psych: The Leader is Shawn Spencer, a hyper-observant man who masquerades as a psychic to help the SBPD solve crimes. The Lancer is his partner and best friend since childhood - Burton Guster, who is generally more serious and level headed that Shawn but has his own moments of quirkiness and immaturity. He is also one of the only two people to know Shawn's secret, the other one being Henry Spencer, Shawn's father. As a former cop who often gives advice to Shawn on the cases he works on, he functions as The Smart Guy. The Big Guy is Carlton Lassiter, the head detective of the SBPD and a massive gun nut. While he and Shawn often snipe at each other, Lassiter is always there to provide the Psych duo with police backup. The Chick of the group is Juliet O'Hara, Lassiter's partner who accompanies Lassiter in providing backup to Shawn and Gus. She is also the most level headed and caring member of the band.
I'm not an expert on the show or anything, but, looking at the main page, is Vick a significant member of the team?

TRS Wick CleaningPurged the previous examples I brought up. Again, asking about what should be done with PlayingWith.Five Man Band and SoYouWantTo.Write A Five Man Band, and if the page image should be changed.

TRS Wick CleaningThe page image needs to be discussed at Image Pickin' if we haven't already. IDK about the other pages.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessRewrote the Playing With page. Thoughts?
TRS Wick CleaningRequest for new example on main page under Fan Works folder:
- The Night Unfurls: Later on in the original story, Kyril gains four apprentice hunters, making him and his band of hunters this:
- Kyril is The Leader and the master of all four apprentices. Being the most experienced, he leads his four students through thick and thin. The absence of an occupational hazard means that he's going to stick with them until the day of retirement.
- Sanakan, Kyril's second-in-command and representative when he is away, making her The Lancer. The Red Oni to his Blue, her tactless and headstrong personality contrasts Kyril's level-headed approach. She is also expected to inherit the title of First Hunter from her master, should he decide to retire.
- Hugh, being the team's mute hunter, is The Big Guy who specializes in deft bladework and being a good shot.
- Lily plays the role of The Chick, as the sociable one and main support member of the team. She often de-escalates the situation when Kyril comes into blows with other people, given that he is more than capable of offing them without consideration.
- Soren, the most recent addition to the team, is The Smart Guy. Excels most in sneaking, spying, lock-picking, and gaining intel with his street smarts.
Trope examples need to stay on one bullet, as per official guidelines.
TRS Wick CleaningHere's the adjusted example without the double-bullets.
- The Night Unfurls: Later on in the original story, Kyril gains four apprentice hunters, making him and his band of hunters this:
Kyril is The Leader and the master of all four apprentices. Being the most experienced, he leads his four students through thick and thin. The absence of an occupational hazard means that he's going to stick with them until the day of retirement.

She is also expected to inherit the title of First Hunter from her master, should he decide to retire.
Hugh, being the team's mute hunter, is The Big Guy who specializes in deft bladework and being a good shot.
Lily plays the role of The Chick, as the sociable one and main support member of the team. She often de-escalates the situation when Kyril comes into blows with other people, given that he is more than capable of offing them without consideration.
Soren, the most recent addition to the team, is The Smart Guy. Excels most in sneaking, spying, lock-picking, and gaining intel with his street smarts.
It's technically right, but it's still quite the wall of text. That, and we don't even need specific roles anymore; they just have to be a persistent, sturdy team.
- Rebuild of Evangelion: In 3.0, we have the villains:
- Big Bad - Gendo Ikari, the main antagonist of the movie despite SEELE's presence, and kills them off in the third act of the movie to become this in name as well.
- The Dragon - Fuyutsuki, Gendo's Number Two who willingly mind rapes Shinji and is still loyal to Gendo despite everything.
- The Brute - Rei Q, also a Cute Bruiser with the second most dangerous EVA in the movie, loyally smashing whatever Gendo tells her to smash.
- Evil Genius - Kaworu Nagisa, who's not remotely evil but is the only one with a plan of his own for turning the world back to normal, and also talks Shinji into furthering Gendo's own schemes, albeit unintentionally.
- Dark Chick - Shinji Ikari is the only one ignorant of everything going on around him in the movie, and yet is the only other person that can pilot EVA 13, which is the strangest EVA thus seen in the franchise.
- Robot Carnival: Used in a very toungue-in-cheek manner.
- Samurai Flamenco: The Flamengers, who all fit appropriate Sentai roles:
- Flamen Red: The Leader
- Flamen Blue: The Lancer
- Flamen Green: The Smart Guy
- Flamen Black: The Big Guy
- Flamen Pink: The Chick
- Science Ninja Team Gatchaman: The Trope Maker (or at least the Trope Codifier).
- The Hero: Ken "The Eagle" Washio (G1)
- The Lancer: Joe "The Condor" Asakura (G2)
- The Chick: Jun "The Swan" (G3) (she can also be considered The Smart Guy, as she's the expert in explosives and electronics)
- Kid-Appeal Character: Jinpei "The Swallow" (G4), also The Face by virtue of being the only child on the team and he certainly has a way with other children.
- The Big Guy: Ryu "The Owl" Nakanishi (G5)
- Shin Mazinger: The Kurogane Five/Kurogane Goninshuu, comprised of Yasu, Cross, Django, Sensei, and Kikunosuke. They don't really fit into any of the set archetypes, though.
- In some cases, it's not that clear. But Cross is definitely The Big Guy due to having the most raw strength and defense, Kikunosuke is some twisted subversion of The Chick by being so freaking old and also the strongest by far, Django's The Smart Guy due to his specialized gun rounds and reliance on indirect combat, Sensei's The Hero due to his directness, and Yasu's The Lancer due to the fact that if any of them are going to die in battle, it's gonna be him with that bomb inside his body. Yasu can make a good hero since he's the one who talks. He is the one who kind of takes the viewer (Shiro and Ankokujii) and introduces them to the five. Sort of the link into the group.
- Shining Tears X Wind Weissritter has: Souma (The Hero), Mao (The Lancer), Lazarus (The Big Guy), Blanc Neige (The Smart Guy), and both Elwyn and Ryuna are The Chick. And if you wanna be technical, Zero who formerly was The Hero is now the Big Good.
- Space Battleship Yamato:
- The Hero: Susumu Kodai (Derek Wildstar)
- The Lancer: Daisuke Shima (Mark Venture)
- The Big Guy: Fighter ace Saburo Kato (Pete Conroy); Space Marine Hajime Saito (Sgt. Knox)
- The Smart Guy: Shiro Sanada (Sandor)
- The Chick: Yuki Mori (Nova Forrester)
- Supercar Gattiger
- The Hero - Joe Kabuki (Center Machine driver)
- The Lancer - Ken (Left Machine driver)
- The Big Guy - Hiroki (End Machine driver)
- The Chick - Sakio Waitazuki (Right Machine driver)
- The Team Pet - Kajumi (Up Machine driver)
- Sylvanian Families:
- For the 2007 OVAs:
- The Heroine / The Leader: Rebecca
- The Lancer: Asparagus
- The Big Guy: Dennis, Gromwell
- The Smart Girl / The Smart Guy: Saffron, Rumpus
- The Chick: Peirs, Scarlett
- Sixth Ranger: Buster
- For the 2017 OVAs and 2018 shorts:
- The Heroine /The Leader: Bell/Freya
- The Lancer: Susie/Tiffany (not an anti-hero per se, but a quiet opposite to a talkative Bell/Freya)
- The Big Guy: Shane
- The Smart Guy: Dominic/Ralph
- The Chick: Melinda
- The Sixth Ranger: Aidan/Piers
- For the 2007 OVAs:
- Tenrou Sirius the Jaeger: The Jaegers functioned as this. And is consists of:
- The Leader: Yuliy (Although he is the main focus, Willard is the official leader of the Jaegers.)
- The Lancer: Phillip
- The Big Guy: Fallon
- The Smart Guy: Willard (Can also be functioned as The Leader as he is the official leader of the Jaegers.)
- The Chick: Dorothea
- The Brave Fighter of Legend Da-Garn: The alien invaders have this setup:
- Big Bad: Ohboss, as the leader and the main villain.
- Co-Dragons: Violecche and Cyan, his two highest ranking subordinates, though the latter seems to be Ohboss's main Dragon.
- The Brute: Butcho, the Fat Bastard whose Mooks rely the most on brute force.
- Evil Genius: Redlone, the man with robot subordinates and the mecha collection.
- Dark Chick: Lady Pinky, the only girl, who regularly shows a sadistic side by whipping her android servants.
- Sixth Ranger Traitor: Seven Changer, who is actually a Brave Fighter spying on them.
- The Tower of Druaga: The main Climber parties, minus one for Neeba's team and again with Kally's death.
- Season 2 starts off with a newly formed bunch formed with some of the older characters and two new additions.
- The☆Ultraman: The Science Guard Party consist of:
- The Leader: Captain Akiyama, and later Captain Gondo when Akiyama was Put on a Bus.
- The Lancer: Choichiro Hikari, aka the human host of Ultraman Joneus.
- The Chick: Mutsumi Hoshikawa.
- The Big Guy: Marume, the team sniper.
- The Smart Guy: Tobe, the team's inventor.
- Robot Buddy: Pig, the team's analyzer. In one occasion, he can also operate as a pilot, thus making him a nominal Sixth Ranger.
- Team Pet: Monki, well a little monkey.
- Tokyo Majin
- The Hero: Tatsuma
- The Lancer: Kyouichi (Hotheadedness runs in contrast to Tatsuma's calmness)
- The Smart Chick: Komaki (emotionally volatile, but counts as one)
- The Big Guy: Yuuya (Though can also be The Smart Guy at times)
- The Chick: Aoi (She heals, she protects, has some romantic sparks with three guys)
- The Sixth Ranger: Raito, Hisui

TRS Wick CleaningSo there's no need to specify roles (e.g. The Leader, The Lancer, etc.), and the example only has to say "these five people are a team with a common goal"?
Graffiti WallPretty much, yeah.
TRS Wick CleaningWriting up an example for Torchwood. Any opinions?
- Five-Man Band: After the First-Episode Twist of Suzie Costello leaving the team, Torchwood solidifies into a five-person team that can take on any alien threat. The immortal Captain Jack Harkness and newcomer Gwen Cooper form the focal duo, with medical officer Owen Harper, all-around genius Toshiko Sato, and driver and administrative worker-turned-field agent Ianto Jones filling out the group.
Here's the adjusted example with reasonable length.
- The Night Unfurls: Later on in the original story, Kyril gains four apprentice hunters — Sanakan, Hugh, Lily, and Soren. The five are the best heavy-hitters tasked to root out the Black Dogs. This trope is downplayed because there are other characters who cooperate and/or form bonds with the team, but the five hunters have closer ties with each other as a Badass Crew.
Sounds good! Now just ask for it to be added on the Locked Pages thread and it should all be sorted.
TRS Wick Cleaning- Voltes V:
- The pilots, in order by Volt Machine altitude on combination.
- Kenichi Gou: The Hero, marksman and Motocross champion.
- Ippei Mine: The Lancer, orphaned rodeo champion.
- Daijiro Gou: The Big Guy, defense tactician and hand-to-hand combat ace.
- Hiyoshi Gou: The Smart Guy, roboticist and swimming and diving ace.
- Megumi Oka: The Chick, 18th-generation Ninja and expert diplomat.
- The villains:
- Zambajil: The Big Bad
- Heinel: The Dragon
- Katherine: The Dark Chick
- Jangal: The Brute
- Zuhl: The Evil Genius
- Bergan: The Sixth Ranger (after Zuhl was killed)/ The Starscream
- The pilots, in order by Volt Machine altitude on combination.
- Voltron: The team starts with Keith, Lance, Pidge, Hunk, and Sven. After Sven leaves, Allura takes his place.
- Weiß Kreuz: Crashers becomes one in Crashers: Knight and Ran after Ran is added to the previously four-person team. Knight is The Hero, Ran is The Lancer, Bishop is The Smart Guy, Rook is The Big Guy, and Pawn is The Chick.
- Xabungle: Among the Sandrats:
- Jiron - The Hero.
- Rag - The Lancer cleverly disguised as The Chick.
- Chiru - The other Action Girl cleverly disguised as a half-Bratty Half-Pint, half-Tagalong Kid.
- Burume - The Smart(ass) Guy.
- Dike - The Big Guy.
- Sixth Rangers - Garuro, Maare, and Haiya.
- Yu-Gi-Oh!: Yugi and his main companions are a heroic group of five, particularly in the first arc. Yugi, the streetwise Jonouchi (Joey), the polite and soft spoken Bakura, Honda (Tristan) the muscle in practical matters even if he leaves Duel Monsters to the others, Anzu (Tea) who supports Yugi and invokes The Power of Friendship for the whole team.
- Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds: For the Dark Signer arc we have the villains...
- Big Bad: Rudger
- The Dragon: Kiryu
- The Brute: Demak and Bommer
- The Dark Chick: Misty and Carly
- The Sixth Ranger Traitor: Rex
- Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL: Flip, Tori, and Bronk founded the Numbers Club to support Yuma and Astral without getting them too involved. Flip made himself The Leader, Caswell is The Smart Guy and the most intelligent of the group, Bronk is The Big Guy, a physical powerhouse and the second most capable duelist, Tori is The Chick and the one most inclined to help Yuma due to their relationship, and Cathy is The Lancer, not particularly close to Yuma's friends overall but is still willing to help out partially because of her crush on Yuma and is the best duelist in the group.
- During Zexal II, Yuma had this dynamic with Astral, Tori, Shark, Rio, and Kite, with Yuma as The Leader, Astral and Kite sharing the role as The Smart Guy, Shark as The Lancer, Rio as The Big Guy, and Tori retaining her role as The Chick.
- Zoids: Chaotic Century: By the time of Guardian Force, Van and his closest human allies settle into this dynamic. The frontline fighters are Van the idealistic Stock Shōnen Hero, By-the-Book Cop heavy artillery specialist Thomas, and pragmatic stealthy speedster Irvine. They're supported by the no nonsense Stone Wall Moonbay who pilots their Base on Wheels, and Van's Love Interest the compassionate Mystical Waif Fiona. Van and Fiona are also somewhat Sempai/Kōhai junior counterparts to Irvine and Moonbay as their respective best friends, with relative newcomer Thomas as a fifth wheel.
- They're also joined by their somewhat sentient zoids, and Zeke Van's Robot Buddy Team Pet (despite actually being Fiona's Organoid), whose reactions to things is often used for Comic Relief (when he's not acting as an Amplifier Artifact for Van's Zoid).
- Zoids: Wild: Team Freedom, to the letter:
- The Leader: Arashi, though after a brief spat he shares duties with the team so all of their best attributes can be taken advantage of.
- The Smart Guy: Analog, who has an encyclopedic knowledge of Zoids and their abilities and is a decent strategist. Unusually, his appropriately-named Zoid Tanks is actually able to take a beating but is slower than the rest of the team.
- The Chick: Battalia, who acts as the voice of reason and mechanic. Despite this, she can be a bit of a hothead herself.
- The Big Guy: Bastion, whose Triceratops-type Zoid Tryke is the bulkiest of the group.
- The Lancer: Apex, who oddly is the last of the main crew to join. He contrasts Arashi by having his same competitive spirit but being more brooding and aloof.
- Animorphs.Tropes A To H: Jake is one of those people who are natural leaders, Marco is his best friend who is always disagreeing with him, Rachel is always ready for action, Tobias is stuck in hawk morph so he scouts out the mission for the team, and Cassie reminds them how important people and animals are.
- Archer.Tropes D To G: The ISIS field agents form one quite nicely now that there's five of them.
- Archer is The Leader, "The World's Most Dangerous Spy".
- Lana is The Lancer, who works closest with Archer and is his direct foil.
- Pam is The Big Guy, who has superhuman strength, practices bare knuckle boxing and is generally batshit crazy.
- Ray is The Smart Guy, who is the only one who consistently knows what he's doing.
- Cyril is The Chick, who is the most sensitive and least skilled of the five.
- Arrow.Season Five: The new Team Arrow this season:
- The Leader: Oliver Queen/Green Arrow
- The Lancer: Rene Ramirez/Wild Dog and John Diggle/Spartan
- The Smart Guy: Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific and Felicity Smoak/Overwatch
- The Big Guy: Rory Regan/Ragman and Dinah Drake/Black Canary II
- The Chick: Felicity Smoak/Overwatch and Evelyn Sharpe/Artemis
- Sixth Ranger Traitor: Evelyn who joins Prometheus after finding out about Oliver's kill list phase from Season 1.
- Le Donjon de Naheulbeuk: Subverted as much as you can expect in a comedy, but the roles can still be attributed.
- The Hero — The Ranger (although it's quite debatable if we can call him the leader...)
- The Lancer — The Dwarf
- The Smart Guy — The Enchantress
- The Big Guy — Two, in fact; the Barbarian and the Ogre
- The Chick — The Elf
- Saint Beast:
- The Leader: Judas.
- The Lancer: Luca.
- The Big Guy: Goh, who is also The Leader when Judas is out of the picture.
- The Smart Guy: Shin, who is The Lancer to Goh.
- The Heart: Rey is the emotional center
Could The Chick be said to be just Token Female plus The Heart?
oh hey how are you doing?Eh, well, yes/no depending on what definition you go with.
The Chick is the most problematic of all the old FMB tropes because it's the only one defined by its role in the team, and was forced to be involved thanks to Eddie's gender rule. Boiling it down to "The Heart but female" is simplifying the bigger issue of it being a FMB-specific trope that, as a result, has a lot of glaring problems beyond overlap.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Pureness
Well, sort of? Technically speaking, The Heart was never an acceptable FMB swap because of the gender rule, which included "one of the girls must be The Chick".
The Heart is way broader.
