Main Characters

    Motoyasu Kitamura
After Motoyasu gets killed in the timeline of the main story, his death unlocks a new skill for his spear called "Temporal Reversion". He gets sent him back to the day he and the other heroes were summoned. Wanting to atone for his behavior at the start of the story, Motoyasu prevents Naofumi from being framed by Malty and sets on a quest to protect his "father-in-law" and help him save the fantasy world again. For his tropes in the main series, see here.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Just one encounter with the Filolial obsessed Motoyasu was enough to leave Fitoria utterly terrified of him.
  • Accidental Murder: In Loop 4, he accidentally murders the fake Claw Hero because his Beast Spy spear recognizes him as an enemy and instantly attacks him.
  • The Atoner: He takes the opportunity of traveling to the past to try and make up for how he treated Naofumi before by doing everything in his power to protect him and take him to Siltvelt safely, starting with preventing him from being tricked and framed by the "red pig". It's mostly Played for Laughs, since nobody knows what he's talking about half the time and his tendency to go to the extremes out of the belief he's doing the right thing is still present, he's just doing it for Naofumi now.
  • Berserk Button: Tact's very existence is one to him. Due to him, his boss Medea and her avatar Malty being responsible for his madness and death, he hates him so much he cannot see his face and goes all out to kill him and his followers as brutally as possible.
  • Berserker Tears: He sheds tears as he goes into a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against Tact's gang in Loop 4.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Despite his wackiness and obsession with Filolials, he can be terrifying when he's angry.
  • Blow You Away: His Windmill skill allows him to summon a tornado against his enemies.
  • Breakout Character: The only one of the heroes to score his own spinoff series.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He's completely bonkers and his erratic behavior as well as obsessive love for Filolials weird everybody out.
  • Comically Invincible Hero: Despite being sent to the past, Motoyasu's overpowered skillset from the future stays the same. The result is that right from the moment he's summoned, Motoyasu can obliterate pretty much any enemy he comes across and destroy mountains without breaking a sweat. This is Played for Laughs due to the comical nature of the story and him being trapped in a time loop because his absurd power can't solve everything.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: In Loop 5, Naofumi threatens to cook Kou in order to teach him a lesson for trying to eat Kiel. Motoyasu is torn between his love for his Filolial "children" and his loyalty to his "father-in-law", causing his brain to short-circuit.
  • Crazy-Prepared: When he fights the Church of Three Heroes, Bisca resets his power level to one, thinking it'll make him weak enough to kill. Motoyasu then reveals he had predicted Bisca would do this, so he maximized the power of his first spear and all of his stats that wouldn't be affected by level reset. This allows him to easily kill everyone in the church.
  • Death-Activated Superpower: His new spear gives him the ability to go back in time to the moment of the summoning every time one of the Four Heroes is killed.
  • Fan of Underdog: Very ironically, Motoyasu becomes the Shield Hero's number 1 supporter, repeatedly stating how his "father-in-law" is the greatest, most amazing and smartest hero of all the fantasy world, even though the Naofumi of the new timeline has barely accomplished anything on his own because he counts with Motoyasu's loyalty from the beginning.
  • Fantastic Racism: Because dragons are the natural enemies of Filolials, Motoyasu hates dragons so much that he nearly passes out when he's forced to ride a dragon with Naofumi.
  • Force Feeding: He kidnaps Itsuki in Loop 5 and force-feeds him because it would be inconvenient for him if the timeline resets with Itsuki's death again.
  • Forced Sleep: His Sleep Lance can put his opponents to sleep.
  • Good Parents: He truly loves the Filolials he raises as his own children and is a kind father figure to them.
  • Groundhog Peggy Sue: Motoyasu gets sent back in time to the moment he and the other three heroes were summoned into the fantasy world. He tries to Set Right What Once Went Wrong by preventing Malty from framing Naofumi for sexual assault like in the original timeline. However, things keep going wrong because the changes to the timeline often cause one of the Four Heroes to die and Motoyasu is back to the starting point all over again. Eventually, Motoyasu realizes he needs to make things go exactly the same as the original timeline to get out of the loop, but his meddling keeps messing everything up.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Motoyasu is totally nuts, doesn't give a damn about anyone who isn't Naofumi, one of Naofumi's allies or his Filolials, threatens, steals and murders in a hilariously over-the-top manner.
  • I Hate Past Me: Motoyasu travels back to the day of the heroes' summoning and Itsuki takes his place as the one believing Malty's False Rape Accusation against Naofumi. Motoyasu feels disgusted at seeing a representation of his old self getting so easily fooled by the "red pig". Motoyasu later states he would like to kill his own past self for badmouthing Naofumi.
  • I Will Find You: His main goal, aside from protecting Naofumi, is finding Filo in the past. He even buys every Filolial egg from the slave trader in hopes that Filo hatches from one of them, but he still can't find her. It gets complicated because even if Motoyasu finds Filo's egg early on, Filo technically can't be born as the Filo he knows without Naofumi becoming her owner under the exact same circumstances as in the original timeline.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: He cries a river almost every time Naofumi is nice to him early on.
  • Invisibility: He can use the Cloaking Lance to make himself invisible.
  • Jerkass to One: Motoyasu is usually jovial and goofy around others, but when Elena joins the party, he's instantly hostile toward her, threatening to kill her on the spot. He also envisions her as a lazy pig, so he dubs her sloth pig. Elena doesn't care so long as she can take it easy.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch:
    • In the fourth loop, he kills Jaralis for attempting to have Naofumi gang-raped.
    • He also disintegrates Malty.
    • Later in said loop, he killed Balmus.
    • In the fifth loop, he kills Mald to prevent him from killing Itsuki again.
  • Lost Pet Grievance: The first Filolial he raised was killed by Malty. Naofumi helps him put together his Filolial didn't die from Rapid Aging and a bit later, Motoyasu takes his revenge on Malty in that loop. Also, he hates Tact to death because the latter is responsible for the death of his Filolials in the main timeline.
  • Master of Illusion: His Illusion Lance lets him cast illusions on his opponents.
  • Magma Man: The Fissure Strike allows him to make cracks in the ground to summon lava from the ground.
  • Mr. Exposition: Plays this role, though it's not really for the readers' sake and more so to get Naofumi ahead.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: His immediate answer to any problem he encounters is to suggest murdering everyone who might threaten him and Naofumi. Thankfully, Naofumi always talks him out of it.
  • Nominal Hero: The one thing that technically makes him a good guy is his promise to Filo that he would obey Naofumi and create a peaceful world. He doesn't care how many people he needs to kill to keep Naofumi safe.
  • Pervert Dad: He tries to peep at his Filolial Queens in the hot springs too, according to him, teaches them about modesty and makes them more attractive as any father should.
  • Poisonous Person: His Quimera Viper Spear has a poisoned tip as a special effect.
  • Psycho Sidekick: Naofumi has to constantly remind Motoyasu that they can't just go around killing anyone who can be a threat to them. If it wasn't for that, Motoyasu wouldn't mind destroying any and all kingdoms if that means no one can hurt Naofumi anymore.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Downplayed. Motoyasu travels back in time to the beginning of the story when he and the other heroes are summoned. He does retain basic knowledge of the original timeline, but his memory gets fuzzy whenever he tries to remember the details. It took him a little while to even recognize Naofumi as Filo's owner.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: In Loop 4, once he recognizes Tact as his hated enemy who made Naofumi cry and killed his Filolials, Motoyasu uses his spear to vaporize Tact and kills as many of the latter's minions as he can find in the room.
  • Save Scumming: Every time one of the heroes dies, Motoyasu returns to the moment he and the other heroes were summoned to the fantasy world.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Unlike his dumbass past self, he's capable of acting clever and cunning. His issue is that he's crazy and murderous, not stupid.
  • Through the Eyes of Madness: Since we get to see from his perspective at a point after he went through his Despair Event Horizon, the story shows that the main novel really wasn't exaggerating when it said he could only see and hear women besides Filo as pigs, with every interaction involving women besides Filo and his Filolial daughters literally having their faces be replaced with those of pigs, along with every attempt they have at speaking to him being replaced with oinking. He sees Malty as a red pig, due to him hating her the most. When he sees Tact again, he's unable to perceive his face due to his hatred of him.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: The entire spin-off novel could be considered as one giant bone for Motoyasu, as the will of the universe basically grants him a personal New Game Plus Alternate Universe Sandbox to play around with for his own delight and quest of redemption for his many, many, past mistakes.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: While he's completely insane and psychotic, Motoyasu has grown from an arrogant, self-righteous jackass into a friendly and funny guy who honestly wants to protect Naofumi to make up for how badly he treated him.
  • Undying Loyalty: He's absolutely loyal to Naofumi, to the point that he can't disobey him and his main goal is to help him in every way he can. This is an extension of his obsessive love for Filo, since Naofumi is Filo's master and father figure.
  • Unreliable Expositor: Because his memory was damaged by the initial time travel, a good part of the information he brings about the main timeline is inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Verbal Tic: He usually ends his sentences with "I say."

    Naofumi Iwatani
In an alternate timeline Motoyasu is sent to, Naofumi is protected by the Spear Hero and travels with him to Siltvelt where he will be safe. Because of not having experienced Malty's betrayal and the cruelty of Melromarc, this Naofumi is much nicer and mostly relies on Motoyasu. For his tropes in the main series, see here.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While already a nice guy, Naofumi became bitter and angry after being accused of raping Malty, though he never let his hate actually affect his kinder actions during this period. He even got better overtime thanks to Raphtalia and the people who genuinely believed in him. In Reprise of the Spear Hero, Naofumi does not undergo a period of hate and mistrust thanks to Motoyasu's actions.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Naofumi may be naive and gentle thanks to Motoyasu protecting him from Malty, but he can display some of the nasty traits of his original timeline-self when pissed off. After the demihumans of Siltvelt try to poison Motoyasu's Filolials, Naofumi expresses his anger at the demihumans and warns them that he could make Motoyasu destroy the entire country just by asking.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Without Malty's betrayal and with Motoyasu to protect him, Naofumi retains his initial naivety and doesn't become the aloof, jaded Anti-Hero of the main timeline.
    • Without his misanthropy or the presence of Raphtalia as his constant companion and foil, his relationships with other characters are all over the map. In one loop, he even ends up in a relationship with Sadeena, because Raphtalia isn't there to keep her from acting on her affections. Raphtalia eventually does show up, becoming a surrogate daughter with a chance at a normal childhood.
  • Future Me Scares Me: He freaks out whenever Motoyasu mentions his alternate self's twisted personality traits and vows he won't become like that. In a more comical sense, he's freaked out when Motoyasu says something that makes him think his future self became gay after his trauma made him hate women.
  • Glad He's On Our Side: He says this about Motoyasu who is both dangerously violent and powerful enough to curb stomp almost any enemy in their way.
  • I Owe You My Life: He feels grateful to Motoyasu because, without his great help, Naofumi would have been murdered early in the new timeline.
  • Kid with the Leash: The only reason why Motoyasu doesn't kill all enemies in his path is that Naofumi tells him to not do it and Motoyasu can't go against the wishes of his "father-in-law".
  • Nice Guy: Without the trauma that would sour his personality, Naofumi is a perfectly friendly guy.
  • No Guy Wants to Be Chased: As soon as he arrives at Silvelt, Naofumi has countless demihuman girls aggressively trying to get in bed with him all day long. After just a few days, Naofumi comments on how much of a turnoff it is when women won't stop throwing themselves at him.
  • Only Sane Man: His main ally is Motoyasu and everyone else in their parties is quirky to some level. Naofumi ends up as the only one capable of common sense and levelheadedness.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: When he encounters the very slave traders that attacked Lurolona Village (Raphtalia's and Kiel's home), he captures and sells them into slavery in Siltvelt.
  • Protectorate: Motoyasu does whatever it takes to protect Naofumi from any threat.
  • Stock Light-Novel Hero: Due to Motoyasu preventing Malty's False Rape Accusation, Naofumi outright becomes this archetype wholesale as a much more typical sort of hero, with all the pratfalls that implies.

Filolial

    Sakura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sakura_light_novel.png
Sakura is a Filolial Queen Candidate raised by the Spear Hero. Although she was raised by another hero, she has more affection for the Shield Hero.

  • Alternate Self: Sakura is actually an alternate version of Filo. Her appearance and personality changes depending on her master and the environment in which she's raised, which is why she can't be born as Filo unless the timeline plays out closely enough to the original.
  • Cherry Blossom Girl: Sakura means "cherry blossoms" in Japanese. Naofumi gives her this name because of her pink fur color.
  • Cool Big Sis: In Loop 5, Sakura befriends Melty, and they become so close that the princess says Sakura is like the kind older sister she always wished she had.
  • Eye Colour Change: Her eyes are pink like her hair when Motoyasu is her master. When Motoyasu lets Naofumi be her master, however, her eyes are blue like Filo's. This is a hint to Sakura being an alternate Filo.
  • Foil: To Filo. Both are Filolials assigned and in certain loops raised and owned by Naofumi and are deeply loyal to him. While Filo is very energetic and sometimes disobedient, Sakura is extremely lazy and follows every order Naofumi gives her to the T.
  • Redhead in Green: Pink-haired variant. Sakura has pink hair in her human form, and Motoyasu gives her green clothes for her to wear.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She's a sweet and docile Filolial whose human form is a pink-haired girl.
  • She Is All Grown Up: In a non-chronological way. In the loops where Naofumi raises her directly instead of having Motoyasu do it, she grows into a young woman instead of a young child when gaining a human form. Motoyasu is very surprised, especially since his other Filolials look like children in their human form.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: In Loop 5, Sakura essentially is Raphtalia's replacement in Naofumi's party because she has an older human form and becomes a swordswoman to protect Naofumi, just like Raphtalia in the main series.

    Yuki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuki_light_novel.png
Yuki is a Filolial Queen Candidate raised by the Spear Hero and her affection towards him is very strong. As she is a thoroughbred, she is worth more than most Filolials.

  • Daddy's Girl: Motoyasu considers himself the father to his precious Filolials and Yuki especially adores him beyond measure.
  • Hime Cut: She's a thoroughbred Filolial hatched out of the premium egg. Her human form has blunt bangs, bra strap-length sidelocks, and waist-length straight hair.
  • The Leader: Because of her charisma and coordination skills, she leads the Filolial trio and any other Filolials Motoyasu gets.
  • Precocious Crush: Naofumi thinks Yuki has a crush on Motoyasu and her flustered reaction implies it might be true. However, Motoyasu only can see Yuki as his cute daughter because Filo is the only Filolial he loves romantically.

    Kou
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kou_light_novel.png
Kou is a Filolial King Candidate raised by the Spear Hero.

  • Keet: He's extremely energetic even compared to his fellow Filolials.
  • Sapient Eat Sapient: Kou is the only Filolial who wants to eat demi-humans, including Kiel who is supposed to be a comrade. In Loop 5, he almost does eat Kiel while she's in dog form and only stops because Naofumi threatens to eat him if he insists on treating sapient animal companions as food.

    Luna
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1_563.jpg
Luna is a Filolial Queen Candidate raised by the Spear Hero and the Shield Hero in Loop 5, after being chosen from the slave trader's gatcha game.

  • Interspecies Friendship: She forms a very close friendship with the demi-human Kiel.
  • The Quiet One: She doesn't like to talk more than she needs to.
  • Sizeshifter: She has the unique ability to transform between her fully grown and chick Filolial form.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She has a cool and reserved personality, but shows a sweet and caring side to Kiel.

    Kuro

Kuro is a Filolial King Candidate raised by the Spear Hero in Loop 1.

  • Alternate Self: In the main timeline, Kuro is raised by a regular farmer and is named Black Thunder.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He wears all black, has black feathers and is super cheery and friendly.
  • Girlish Pigtails: His human form has his hair tied into pigtails, making it easy to mistake him for a girl.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Kuro wears a dark dress made by Motoyasu. Despite his feminine looks and clothing, he's a male Filolial.

Demi-Humans

    Kiel

In Loop 5, Motoyasu takes Naofumi to buy a slave. Instead of Raphtalia, they find Kiel and she takes Raphtalia's place as Naofumi's Demi-Human slave.

  • Animorphism: Thanks to Larsa teaching Kiel about transformation, she gains the ability to turn into a puppy. She prefers to stay in this form, mainly because that's the only way Motoyasu can understand her.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Like Raphtalia in the main series, Kiel is happy to be Naofumi's slave because Naofumi treats her well. This falls on deaf ears when Itsuki is convinced that Kiel is being forced to fight.
  • Unwillingly Girly Tomboy: Despite Kiel wanting to be seen as a boy, Naofumi forces her to put on a dress when making her work as his salesman. Kiel hates it, but she puts up with it because it's Naofumi's order.

    Wyndia

In Loop 5, Ren kills the dragon Gaelion like in the main series. Motoyasu and Naofumi then find Wyndia along with her dragon sister Gaelion (one different from the one in the main series). The two orphans are invited to join their party.

    Larsa

Larsa is a Panda demi-human and a mercenary. Motoyasu and Naofumi meet her in their fifth loop.

  • Beary Friendly: She's a quite nice Panda and is a helpful ally to Motoyasu and Naofumi in Loop 5.
  • Green Thumb: She has the power to grow bamboo at will.
  • Hot in Human Form: She can take human form and Naofumi's reaction implies she looks pretty. However, from Motoyasu's perspective, she just transformed from a panda to a pig.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She's a mercenary wearing heavy armor, but she likes it when Naogumi gives her feminine accessories to look girlier.

Humans

    Eclair Seaetto

In Loop 4, Motoyasu finds Eclair when he's locked up in the Melromarc castle, where she's kept prisoner. Since she's one of the few women he doesn't see as a pig due to being Filo's friend, he frees her and she helps him escort Naofumi to Siltvelt

    The Reincarnate
An unnamed woman who gets reincarnated into Malty's body in an April Fools' Day bonus chapter. A fan of her old world's version of the Shield Hero franchise, she tries to work out what incarnation of Melomarc she's been put into before realizing this world resembles Spear Hero's.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Even more so than the Three Heroes, as she's a fan of the series everyone else belongs to in her world. Unfortunately for her, she wakes up in an antagonist's body.
  • Gender Flip: While Naofumi and the Three Heroes get reincarnated into fantasy hero roles commonly seen in works aimed at boys, this woman's reincarnation into Malty is a riff on the "Reborn as Villainess" Story, which is commonly aimed at girls.
  • No Name Given: Since the chapter is written from her perspective, her name isn't given; only her identity as Malty is known.
  • Oh, Crap!: She's in immediate despair when Motoyasu reveals he's in his Reprise incarnation, which means her death as Malty is guaranteed.
  • "Reborn as Villainess" Story: Parodied. She's from a world where Shield Hero is a series, and her reincarnation into Malty, a known major antagonist, means she's been forced into the villainess role. She panics when she realizes.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: In her previous life, she was an avid shipper of Naofumi/Motoyasu.
