    The Imposter's Family

Megumi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_5af940ef3478559ef8027331901c223b_78aa3708_500.png

The Imposter's adoptive mother. A formal but just agent who works for the Public Security Intelligence Agency.

  • Big Good: Her primary directive is to ensure the safety of the Japanese public and is willing to collaborate with the Quantum Crew.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Her main motive is to help protect Japan against major threats, but as a result is willing to execute Juu Kinjo on the spot without trial upon him confessing to being a Despair.
  • The Gunslinger: She always carries a gun with her and is trained to make perfect shots against her enemies.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Upon realizing how dangerous it will be to keep Juu Kinjo alive, along with having 100% assurance that he will be held accountable for his crimes, Megumi decides to execute him on the spot.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: A familial example. While she does look after Imposter like their own child, she purposefully avoided giving them a legal identity due to the many enemies who would hunt them if they came across such vital information. She also limited how much time they spent with each other because of this reason along with her work.
  • Older Than They Look: She's a full grown woman but her appearance could make her pass for a teenager.
  • Parental Substitute: She was a close friend to the Imposter's biological mother and promised to take care of them when the original mother declared that she was unfit for the role.
  • Secret-Keeper: She familiarizes herself with the Quantum Crew and Kasugano's true identity, as well as time travel and the existence of Ultimate Despair, while working to stop Juu Kinjo. But she assures the heroes that she'll keep their identities a secret considering the opponents they intend to face.

    The Hanamuras

Mama Hanamura

Teruteru's cherished mother.

  • Family Theme Naming: She has a quirk of naming her children using double repetitive syllables.
  • Good Parents: She loves all her children and encourages Teruteru to live his best life regardless of her current health.

Mahiru's father and Class 49's Former Ultimate Construction Worker.

  • Career-Ending Injury: He used to work as a professional construction worker. But an accident with a metal beam left him bound to a wheelchair.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: In the original, Mahiru only described him as a lazy bum. In this adaptation, we learn that he was crippled because of a work accident. It's also stated that he has depression which makes it harder for him to be productive around the house.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He certainly caught the attention of several anons with his bewitching good looks.
  • Older Than They Look: Hitoshi could pass off for Mahiru's brother with his appearance.
  • The Pig-Pen: Shows some shades of this. He doesn't attend to his hygiene and isn't one for keeping the house consistently clean.

Kaori Koizumi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_88fac2e2d0e4538f7dbbbc8518f8e548_79cd6828_500.png

  • Noodle Incident: She tried to teach Mahiru how to use a sniper rifle but was constantly denied.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Kaori is supportive of her daughter being in a relationship with Honami.

  • I Just Want to Be Normal: She eventually gave up the idol lifestyle to continue her university studies.
  • Idol Singer: One of the biggest performers of her generation.

  • Office Lady: Averted. Ibuki mentions that she's a businesswoman.

    The Saionjis

Izumi Saionji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_6782833a7161054ce19bf1bbee19072f_bfa881df_500.png

Hiyoko's grandmother and the matriarch of the Saionji Clan.

  • Everyone Has Standards: As horrible as she is, she admits that Junya and Haiji's Human Trafficking scheme was repulsive.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Mother:
    • She tries to take her granddaughter out of Hope's Peak after the ongoing chaos occurring mixed with Hiyoko revealing her relationship with the "middle class" Hajime.
    • In the Storm Dissipates Arc, she succeeds in pulling Hiyoko out of the academy after learning of her involvement in the raid.
  • Hate Sink: One of the worst human beings imaginable due to her racist, classist, traditionalist beliefs mixed with her snobby personality.
  • It's All About Me: As her daughter points out, all Izumi cares about is being listened too and couldn't care less about anything else.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: She's not wrong that Hope's Peak is dangerous and that Hiyoko was nearly kidnapped there. She also argues that it wasn't fair that neither Hiyoko or Hajime called her after the events of the Puppetmaster Arc.
  • Older Than She Looks: She looks fairly young even though she's the grandmother of a high school girl.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She wears a blue violet kimono and is the undisputed matriarch of the Saionji Clan.
  • Racist Grandma: She strongly detests foreigners and isn't afraid to express her xenophobic beliefs in front of others.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Izumi shows shades of this due to her traditionalist nature. Ex. She tells Chiaki that she's wasting her time with her gaming career and should focus on finding a husband.

Maiko Saionji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_a86ef91d77b2fee24f91b4f90060b53d_b9d8b248_500_6.png

Hiyoko's birth mother and the disgraced daughter of Izumi.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: In the Black and White Christmas Arc, she instantly agrees to participate in supporting the Quantum Crew stop Junko Enoshima to repay them for helping her and Kohaku reunite with their daughter.
  • Black Sheep: Maiko is regarded as this to the Saionji Clan due to her lackluster dancing skills and how she constantly defies the will of her mother.
  • Cowardice Callout: Tells Izumi that she's spineless for blaming her problems on others instead of taking responsibility for them, among a slew of other criticisms as part of a "Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: She admits that one of the reasons she pursued a relationship with Kohaku, a Korean man, was to spite her racist mother.
  • The Dog Bites Back: She finally lets Izumi have it after years of verbal abuse toward her, Kohaku and Hiyoko.
  • Extreme Doormat: Her worst vice is that she doesn't try to stand up for herself, her husband or her daughter. Chiaki, Mikan, Kotoko and her old friend Kimika try to talk her out of his mindset. It takes a lot of prompting, but she lets Izumi have it when she threatens to banish Kohaku from the house and keep Hiyoko imprisoned.
  • Marry for Love: The other big reason she married Kohaku was because she genuinely loved him mixed with the man appreciating her for who she was.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives a beautifully elaborate one to her mother by denouncing her as the horrible, detestable, pathetic and ultimately useless witch she truly is and how everyone in the Saionji family is better off without her.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She shares her daughter's Blush Stickers.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: She's a lovely woman who's true talent lies in creating stunning kimonos.
  • Why Couldn't You Be Different?: Izumi's disdain for her daughter stems from her inability to dance and pass on the Saionji tradition.

Kohaku Saionji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_a66c86236d7c99983af9664b25e1b373_76b54feb_500.png

Hiyoko's father.

  • Delicate and Sickly: Hiyoko mentions that her dad has been pretty sick and there's a high chance he may not live to see his daughter's happily ever after.
  • Extreme Doormat: He willing goes through with his mother-in-law's abuse and horrid personality just to stay on her good side.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He has light blonde hair and is a kind-hearted man.
  • Hidden Depths: He likes Pokémon.
  • Hiding Your Heritage: He's Korean but his racist mother-in-law forbade him and Maiko from acknowledging his ethnicity and was forced to keep it a secret from Hiyoko.
  • Nice Guy: A pretty good guy who does care about his family.

    The Tsumikis

    The Nidais

Erina Nidai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_9fa02d2f0b12f167963b6c381bf22fe1_55ca5c93_500.png

Nekomaru's mother.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: While normally a friendly and sweet-natured woman, she can be incredibly furious if her precious son is under threat.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Like her big boy, she can do the electric eye motif when she's angry.
  • Team Mom: During the New Year Cheer Arc, she immediately volunteers herself to become the Voids' new mother by helping them clean their warehouse and making sure they eat and rest.

    The Nanamis

  • Badass Family: Along with Chiaki, the other members of her family are revealed to be surprisingly awesome as well: Chiaki's great-grandmother was the first female Ultimate, joining Class 6 as the Ultimate Medic (for treating soldiers on the front line in World War II); her grandmother was the Ultimate Teacher and joined the Ministry of Education; her mother solved over 150 cases before she was even in Hope's Peak; and her dad helped the U.S. Government design a nuclear missile detection system in the 80s.

Harumi Nanami

Chiaki's mother.

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Harumi, along with her husband, were originally not the parents of Chiaki but instead an OC named 'Nagi Nanami' from Neo World Program Monitor, an AU where Chiaki as a person does not exist.
  • Ascended Extra: In the Old Ghosts Arc, she participates in a new mission to protect Patient 8204 in the elusive hospital DLTA.
  • Combat Medic: She's a nurse who also knows how to kick ass.
  • Former Teen Rebel: When attending the Reserve Course, she often hung around a group of bad girls who motivated her into doing bad choices.
  • Hidden Depths: Before she became a nurse, she was interested in forensics science. She even knows about fingerprint analysis and uses this information in a Season 2 mission. As it turns out, she could have become an Ultimate student if not for Emina Nijiue.
  • Mama Bear: When she learns that Chiaki is at the Sunny Days Island and is under threat by the monster Storm, Harumi agrees to help out the Quantum Crew to rescue her precious daughter. She even gets to fight directly against the enemies.
  • One Degree of Separation: She was working as a nurse when Utsuro was first born, which would lead to Chiaki's genesis.

Tenmei Nanami

Sprite created by Neo World Program Monitor

Chiaki's father.

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Tenmei, along with his wife, were originally not the parents of Chiaki but instead an OC named 'Nagi Nanami' from Neo World Program Monitor, an AU where Chiaki as a person does not exist.
  • Ascended Extra: For the Live Hard and Die Free Arc, he's requested to deactivate a dangerous time bomb during a sting operation and he succeeds with flying colors.
  • Been There, Shaped History: Apparently he was an Ultimate at Hope's Peak and played a part in creating the Neo World Program.
  • The Cracker: Given his talent as a programmer, he's also quite knowledgeable when it comes to hacking security systems.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: After the Puppetmaster Arc, he still has a bit of anger towards Chiaki for lying to him and stealing millions of yen behind his back.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Much like his daughter, he also fell for a Reserve Course student. In this case, his wife.
  • Papa Wolf: After learning about Chiaki going to the Sunny Days resort, which is run by a deranged sociopath, Tenmei agrees to help out the Quantum Crew to get his little girl back. He even partakes in some hardcore combat against the enemy forces.

    The Neverminds

Queen Natasha Nevermind

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_684669584578e2bca5d4baec37b45d9c_1700e7ac_500.png

Sonia's mother and the Queen of Novoselic.

  • Alliterative Name: Natasha Nevermind.
  • The High Queen: The supreme ruler of the accomplished Kingdom of Novoselic who holds a wise and peaceful nature.
  • Open-Minded Parent: She's delighted to learn that her daughter has already found various romantic partners. It helps that Novoselic is welcoming of polygomous relationships.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She wears a uniform with different shades of purple and is a legitimate queen.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While she's rightfully upset with her daughter engaging in dangerous missions despite traveling to Japan for her protection, she does commend Sonia for being well informed with the societal issues of the country and how she will use that knowledge to create positive societal changes.
  • So Proud of You: She expresses pride in her daughter for how much she's grown during her stay in Japan along with her embracing her leadership skills for the greater good.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Looks exactly like her daughter only with eggshell white hair.

    The Kuzuryus

Toshiro Kuzuryu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_8c4c7325e5aae71fc0c567003c713316_49f97647_500.png

Fuyuhiko and Natsumi's father and the current head of the Kuzuryu Clan.

Yukiko Kuzuryu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_e22f7b0fc35b750c535c5a0c834b998c_71200bd6_500.png

Fuyuhiko and Natsumi's mother.

    The Owaris

Akane's family. They have...a lot of issues.

  • Shadow Archetype: In a sense, the Owaris represent what can happen to the Cuddle Puddle if they aren't careful with their polygamous relationships and take their partners for granted.

Kaoru Owari

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_ea234ae5decdd6437e9605e7c694f90f_86f90355_500_6.png

Akane's father, a man that often sleeps with other women and often relies on Akane to get the money.

  • Freudian Excuse: It's implied that the reason he's so shameless is because the death of his first wife, Rumiko, left him feeling empty and miserable.
  • Hate Sink: A shameless whore who constantly hits on different women, does nothing to provide or care for his current family and refuses to take responsibility for his actions.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: He yells at Akane for jeopardizing her life while participating in the Sunny Island Raid as the family depends on her to provide a financial income. But as Hinata points out, he does jack squat in providing for the family if he has to rely on his daughter for money.
  • May–December Romance: He's 53 and one of his wives (Honoka) is 28.
  • NEET: The "man" doesn't even have a job and relies on his daughter to support the Owari house.
  • Really Gets Around: The scumbag has no shame when flirting with any woman he meets in public, as if the wife he currently has isn't good enough for him.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The coward, bully, cad and thief decides to walk away from his wife and children leaving them to fend for themselves.

Rumiko Owari nee' Fujimoto

Akane's birth mother. Rumiko was a hardworking, serious and well adjusted woman who was also upbeat and fun when given the time for it. She dreamt of becoming a gymnast in the Olympics.

  • Like Parent, Like Child: Much like Akane, she's a tough girl with a love of athletics and excelled at being a gymnast.
  • Missing Mom: She died via car accident when Akane was only 2.

Narumi Owari

Akane's first stepmom. Narumi’s described to be a woman under a lot of stress and panics a lot when there’s chaos around her, but somehow manages to get things done.

  • Driven to Suicide: Stress got the better of her and she took her own life through bloody means.
  • Mood-Swinger: According to Akane, she had really bad mood swings.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: Her dynamic with the butthole Kaoru would involve them arguing with each other one day only for everything to be hunky-dory the next.

Honoka Owari

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_09230d7eab9d70cbe31c0d40e14ddfd4_f7435ff0_500.png

Akane's second stepmom. She's often chill with her kids doing whatever they want but can go to points of being careless.

  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Inverted. Apparently Honoka is comfortable with her whore of a husband chasing after other unfortunate women.
  • Damsel in Distress: In the Black and White Christmas Arc, she's nearly kidnapped by a stranger. Thankfully she's rescued by Mondo and his biker gang.
  • Mama Bear: As careless as she is, Honoka makes it clear that no one is allowed to hurt her kids. Even the ones that aren't biologically hers.
  • Older Than They Look: She could pass for Akane's sister.
  • Permissive Parents: She doesn't mind letting the children do as they want. It's deconstructed as it's allowed her to be irresponsible as an adult while the children are forced to take care of each other.

Hinata Owari

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_ac2a9a5dc7ca8067c632fb8ff8b852b7_a5a834ed_400.png

Akane's birth younger brother and Yota Owari's twin brother. He tends to be more concerned about family concerns and often butts head with his father.

  • Calling the Old Man Out: He's quick to call out his pathetic excuse of a father for his failure to provide for his children.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: He's the responsible and serious twin to his laidback brother.
  • Promotion to Parent: Given the ongoing disfunction of the Owari adults, Hinata places himself as responsible for the well being of his younger siblings.

Yota Owari

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_8493b6e33d2ae98396b83d96be0e9fa1_8ef4f889_500.png

Akane's birth younger brother and Hinata's twin brother. Unlike Hinata, he tends to be laid back and a flirt like his father.

  • The Casanova: He takes after his father (unfortunately) by flirting with any girl he comes across.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He admits to being a flirt but he knows his priorities and can keep his head straight.
  • In the Hood: Tends to wear a red hoodie.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Prefers to act carefree and flirtatious, unlike his mature twin brother.

Itsumi Owari

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_9eef38201106e036b95f1896c9fe140d_24b00339_500.png

Akane's first half sister, the first daughter of Narumi Owari, and the older sister of Mei and Hideki Owari. A girl that tends to be serious but can be very childish.

Hideki Owari

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_be08dbf70cb2d4574d17af772358a07f_9021a2f1_500.png

Akane's first half brother, the first son of Narumi Owari, and the younger brother of Itsumi Owari and older brother of Mei Owari. A bright naive boy with endless optimism.

Mei Owari

Akane's second half sister, the second daughter of Narumi Owari, and the younger sister of Itsumi Owari and Hideki Owari, Like Akane, she's a massive tomboy and is often playing around but tends to make comments she doesn't understand yet.

Teruko Owari

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_7dcbc4e9b9db7b4dbddf0f96896d9cb6_0a3871de_500.png

Akane's third half sister, the first daughter of Honoka Owari, and the older sister of Haruto and Jubei Owari. A shy timid girl that clings to her older siblings and likes keeping to herself.

Haruto and Jubei Owari

Akane's second and third half brothers, the two sons of Honoka Owari, and the younger brothers of Teruko Owari. They are babies.

    The Soudas

Kenji Souda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_24507762eb828699bc4eeba0c2a2af24_1d62c1ee_400.png

Kazuichi's dad.

  • Abusive Parents: He admits to Misako that he has a past of beating his son. Though he does seem to regret it.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Kenji claims that his wife used to stalk him when they were in high school and he only married her out of desperation. It also didn't work since she was, in his words, a "crappy mother" to Kazuichi.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: He works as a bike shop mechanic and his son is the Ultimate Mechanic.

    The Hinatas

Hiroshi Hinata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_25fe589ea621e9a786939d51dba17e8b_1622e0c0_500.png

Hajime's father.

  • Alliterative Name: Hiroshi Hinata.
  • Family Drama: He reveals to Hajime that he once had a beloved brother who was the Ultimate Lawyer but was killed after crossing paths with a yakuza. After his death, his parents forced him to attend Hope's Peak in the hopes that he'd find some useful talent and make a worthy living for himself. He even ended up in the Reserve Course when he couldn't find one. The ongoing pressure and depression resulted in Hiroshi developing a disdain for the talent system and ultimately cut ties with his parents.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Inverted. Hiroshi is revealed to have attended the Reserve Course of Hope's Peak to obtain some form of talent and future. But unlike his son who went on his own free will, Hiroshi was forced to attend by his demanding parents.
  • Papa Wolf: He wants to help his son out and doesn't care one bit about the danger, only caring about protecting Hajime.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Subverted. They instantly piece together that Hajime was Kasugano due to him being heavily involved in Hope's Peak mixed with him choosing the name of his favorite homeroom teacher.

Keiko Hinata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_46f35bdec5db896b594a409ce6083179_0568fe5a_500.png

Hajime's mother.

  • Almighty Mom: Hajime is more afraid of her then most of the villains he fights.
  • And Then What?: She asks this question to her son over what he and his lovers will do with themselves once they stop the Despair Wars from happening.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: After she informs Hajime and Hibiki that they'll be seeing a therapist, Hajime tries to counter by saying that Dr. Kabuya is enough for them. To which she retorts with...
Keiko: And how well has it helped you so far?
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: She shows off some impressive math and analytical skills when helping the Crew with locating the elusive Tsukasa Tsumiki.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even though she has a cynical view regarding the Cuddle Puddle dynamic and how it can function, she admits that she isn't cruel enough to force Hajime to separate from his lovers.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She gets easily jealous when around other girls and women believing them to be a threat to her beauty.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Keiko doesn't have a positive opinion over her son having a polyamorous relationship. But her reasoning stems from how the current Japanese society still isn't willing to accept members of the LGBTQ+ community. Even if they save the world, they would still face difficulties from those wouldn't accept them and may persecute them and their future children.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: She admits that she was once like Hajime as she too tried a variety of activities and skills to be "special" in her youth but was never able to succeed.
  • Mama Bear:
    • When she learns what happens to her future great-grandchild (Kaede) in the original timeline, she immediately threatens to break Tsumugi's nose should they ever meet.
    • And in the Old Ghosts Arc, she gives a well deserved punch to Tsukasa Tsumiki for trying to sexually assault her boy.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Subverted. They instantly piece together that Hajime was Kasugano due to him being heavily involved in Hope's Peak mixed with him choosing the name of his favorite homeroom teacher.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While she is aware of the gravity behind her son's world saving mission, Keiko knows that bearing the weight of the world is too much for a group of teenagers. While she can't stop them, she will be insistent on having her son and his friends participate in actual therapy to help them with their traumas.
