Basically, like the WMG pages for the sorting algorithms of Mortality, Deadness, and Face Heel Turning - but for your own works.

A bit off-topic, I guess, but I thought it might be fun to see how closely your characters follow the Hollywood conventions for such things. Feel free to put (preferably spoilered) what actually happens to the characters in question.

Hmm, in terms of Face Heel Turning:

  • Kevin Chandler: 2.7
  • Devver: 2.7
  • Ian Down: 3.2
  • Justin Peterson: 3.6

[up][up]

[up] You mind elaborating on how you got those numbers?

Let's do Evil Alex's chances at redemption. He's intended to be a Complete Monster (albeit a funny one along the lines of Xykon) but we all know how subjective that is:

Species: Human (3)

Gender: Male (2)

Age: Kinda fuzzy - he was born circa 1800, but thanks to magic and cloning shenanigans is biologically 30-ish. I'll give him a 2.5.

Role: Overall Big Bad (1)

Aesthetics: He has horns and has gone One-Winged Angel on multiple occasions (2)

Motivation: Long-term goal is to be God with a capital G. As mentioned, he's intended to be a Complete Monster. Looks like a 1.

Characterization: Spectacularly insane under an Evilly Affable veneer. Probably well-rounded enough to deserve a 2 but no higher.

Contentedness: Evil Feels Good. 1.

Morality of the Story: The Good, the Bad, and the Evil. 4.

Idealism of the Story: Leans towards the idealistic end of the scale, but not overwhelmingly. I'll rate it 3.5.

Comes in at 2.2. He's not turning and he doesn't.

All right. I'll do it for Justin only though, even though he is an Anti-Hero. This applies to him near the beginning of the story:

Species: Human (3)

Gender: Male (4)

Age: Teenager (4)

Role: The Hero (1). He doesn't fit this trope, but he's the protagonist.

Aesthetics: Average (3)

Motivation: Wordview (3). The Unchosen One.

Characterization: Loners Are Freaks (5)

Contentness: Life is hard (4). Let's say he had a traumatizing experience in his past and his life goes downhill.

Morality of the story: Grey-and-Gray Morality (4)

Cynicism of the story: Cynical (4)

He has more of a chance of turning than staying, considering his character and what type of story he in (a Death Note Fan Fic). He goes insane and crosses to Villain Protagonist.

OK, I'll do Nick and Trevor (who are antagonists).

Mortality:

Age: Trevor gets a 1 here, since he's only 11. Nick is a vampire, so hard to say, but he looks like a teenager, so I'll give him a 2.

Sexual Orientation: Trevor gets a 1. Nick I hadn't thought about, I guess I'll give him a 1 too.

Love Interest: N/A.

Role: Hard to say, since YMMV on whether or not it's a Villain Protagonist story. I guess I'd class Trevor as villain, so a 5, and Nick as hero (1).

Race: Both caucasian (1, 1).

Gender: Both male, so 3 and 3.

Aesthetics: Both average, so 3 and 3.

Personality: None of these fit, so I'll say N/A.

Flaws: None of those, so N/A. (Though Nick acts mentally disabled during the course of the story due to Mind Control, does that count?)

Virtues: Both get a 3, since both are Genre Savvy and highly intelligent.

Species: Trevor gets a 3, though he's not completely human. Nick gets 5 because he's a vampire.

Occupation: Nick's a private detective, I guess that's closest to 4. Trevor is a morally questionable superhero, so that's closest to 1.

Prognosis: N/A since none of those are mentioned.

So, we average that out, and Trevor gets 4.2 and Nick gets 2.3. Both survive, though Nick is left with serious problems.

And Heel Face/Face Heel Turning:

First, as I said above, this is Grey-and-Grey Morality, so I'll do both according to both algorithms.

Heel–Face Turn:

Species: Nick gets 2 for being a vampire and Trevor gets a 5 because his kind is very rare (8 of them at the moment, including him, and they were very common a long time ago).

Gender: Both get a 2.

Age: Trevor is a 2, he's somewhat of a Creepy Child. Nick would be either 4 or 5, so I'll say 4.5.

Role: If Nick's the good guy, then Trevor's the Big Bad (1). If Trevor's the good guy, Nick would probably be a 4, since his detective partner turns out to be much more of a threat to Trevor's plans than he does.

Aesthetics: Probably get a 5 for both of them.

Motivation: Trevor is sort of a "Well Done, Son" Guy (difference is that he actually got the approval he craved), so 5. Nick believes himself to be doing good, so 4.

Characterization: Trevor gets a 5, Nick gets a 4.

Contentness: Nick was doing well until the main plot wrecked his life, so 2. Trevor would be 3, because he has a lot of repressed angst, but also genuinely enjoys many of his bad deeds.

Morality: Grey-and-Grey Morality, so 3.

Idealism: Um, a 2, I guess? Deconstructs things like easy recovery from Mind Control, and kills off some fairly sympathetic characters, plus it has a sort of Downer Ending for both Trevor and Nick. But both still have hope for future happiness.

So, Trevor gets 3.3 and Nick gets 3.25, so pretty much exactly the same score.

Face–Heel Turn:

Species: Nick gets a 2, Trevor is hard to place but I guess he'd get 2.5 since he's part human. He is possessed, with a symbiotic relationship with the possessing spirit, and their personalities are fused.

Gender: Both get 4.

Age: Trevor gets 1, Nick gets 4.

Role: I guess both would get 1.

Aesthetic: Both get 3.

Motivation: Trevor gets 5 (he kills vampires because he likes to eat them, and is planning on using vampire-slaying to gain power as well). Nick gets a 2.

Characterization: Trevor gets 5, Nick gets 1.

Contentness: Trevor gets 3 and Nick gets 2, just like before.

Morality: Grey-and-Grey Morality, so 4.

Cynicism: I guess I decided on 4.

Trevor gets 3.25, Nick gets 2.7, so Trevor's more likely to turn evil.

Nick gets Brainwashed and Crazy and becomes Trevor's minion, Trevor at one point pretends he's about to switch sides, but never actually does.

If I'm asking for advice on a story idea, don't tell me it can't be done.

Looked at two characters for their likelihood of turning heel. This is fun.

Species: Human (3)

Gender: Male (4)

Age: Young Adult (5)

Role: Freelancer, pretty much how he gets by. (4)

Aesthetics: "gothic" in the dark clothes/arcane arts sense (4)

Motivation: A genuine desire to educate/help people, so probably closer to 2 than 3

Characterization: Very surly and bitter (3)

Contentedness: It's the hard-knock life for us! (4)

Morality: Grey and Gray Morality probably (4)

Cynicism: Somewhere in the middle? Let's say 3.

And for the second character:

Species: Human (3)

Gender: Female (2)

Age: Older grandmotherly figure (2)

Role: Not anything prominent, so around (2)

Aesthetics: Dignified describes it pretty well. (2)

Motivation: Loyalty, devotion (2)

Characterization: Not a loner per se, but acts enough like one. (5)

Contentedness: Aaaangst (5)

Morality: 4

Cynicism: 3

They're pretty much flip-flopped. Second character's a traitor, first is just a drama queen.

Trying them for the main (kind of) villain of one of my stories.

First, Mortality.

  • Age: Single Adult (3)
  • Sexual Orientation: Straight (3)
  • Love Interest: None of these fits, so I don't count this.
  • Role: Villain (5)
  • Race: Caucasian, I guess. The same as whatever colour everyone else has at her setting (1)
  • Gender: Female, though none of the tropes listed. She's close to Action Girl, though, so... (1)*Aesthetics: Average to good (3)
  • Personality: None of these. Doesn't count.
  • Flaws: None of these, again.
  • Virtues: None. Again.
  • Species: Human (3)
  • Occupation: Somewhere between Competent Secondary Female and Hero's Best Friend. Closest to the second one, so I'm giving it a (4)
  • Prognosis: Nothing like that.
  • Health: Nothing special.

Final score: 2,874. She dies, though it basically is an "all according to the plan" situation.

Heel/Face Turning:

Final score: 3,88888... She doesn't. She never even considers stop doing what she does. This one missed.

Going to add more characters from my comics later, but first, someone who's guaranteed to break the Face/Heel algorithm: the leader of the rss(click)ar rebel movement in a different story:

Species: Starfish Alien (more humanlike then most in the 'verse, but that's not saying much). 1

Gender: Hermaphrodite, uses male pronouns when dealing with other species. 2

Age: Middle-aged. 3

Role: Secondary antagonist. I'll say 3

Aesthetics: Hexapodal reptile with some insectoid features. 1

Motivation: Probably a Well-Intentioned Extremist. 4

Characterization: Literally cold-blooded, and with a "My species first" mentality. Probably a 3

Contentedness: Again, probably around a 3.

Morality of the story: Very much Grey-and-Gray Morality. 3

Idealism of the story: Middle-of-the-road. 3

Comes out as a 2.6 so not all that likely. "He" is forced into an Enemy Mine by the approaching Horde of Alien Locusts, and it sticks - in the end, the rss(click)ar and humans are the most strongly allied species. In fact, the whole reason I picked this guy is because I knew his results would be messed up by the algorithm assuming Beauty Equals Goodness - which it certainly doesn't in this story.

Several, as-yet-unnamed characters for a work under development:

Protagonist: Mortality - 3.04 Well, that's obviously not right. "Not Dying" is kind of this guy's thing.

Unnamed Character X Deadness - 3.00 Hahahahahah NO. I'd say "Eaten alive, from the inside, by spiders" falls into the "Deader than Disco" category.

I had an idea a while ago for a story in which every hero was someone who in a normal story would function as a villain. I imagine they'll get pretty high scores for turning heel. Let's test it out!

Alex the Fleshcrafter: (4 + 4 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 1 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2)/10 = 3.8. Funny, since I originally intended him as The Hero.

Maxwell the Mindcrafter: (2 + 4 + 2 + 4*

+ 1 + 5 + 4 + 2 + 3 + 2)/10 = 2.9. Back when he had a mind, he was almost as evil as the Big Bad—the characters keep him around because a): he can still use magic, and b): Kayla's loyal to him.

Kayla the Soulcrafter: (4 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 4 + 3 + 2)/10 = 2.7. She's basically decent, just scary-looking.

Nikki the half-Brute: (2*

+ 2 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 4 + 3 + 2)/10 = 3.1. She wants to do a Face–Heel Turn, but the heels in question would happily kill her for not being pure human.

Therese the Transcended: (5 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 2)/10 = 2.8. She's too mentally damaged to understand good or evil—she just finds someone to trust and follows their orders.*

Might as well see how easily my villains would turn good, too:

Nicholas the Tyrant: (2 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 4 + 4)/10 = 2.2. This guy's the most repulsive piece of work I've ever come up with.

Flynn the Rebel: 3 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 4 + 4 = 3.3. He's basically the Hero of Another Story.

And now back to my comics - not going to bother spoilering this as it's never going to be published anyway. First, let's see if Evil Alex really was Killed Off for Real in the Final Battle:

Cause of death: 4 (overkill)

Audience expectation: 3 (the comic in question was called The End of Evil Alex)

Body found: 4 (he exploded in plain view)

Reaction: 4 (Stunned Silence)

Last words: 4 (Killed Mid-Sentence)

Characterization: 1 (Big Bad)

When did he die: 4 (series finale)

Died and come back: 2 (had Joker Immunity as a explicit ability, but bumped down to 2 as his resurrection mechanism had been destroyed during the final arc)

26/8 = 3.25 - he's pretty obviously dead (as in "this-time-we-mean-it dead").

Let's take his arch-nemesis, The Cheeseburger - also Killed Off for Real (or was he?) during the final arc:

Cause of death: 3

Audience expectation: 3

Body found: 4 (dead and buried)

Reaction: 3 (stunned shock)

Last words: 4 (Killed Mid-Sentence again)

Characterization: 2.5 (regular, but bumped down a little for being a mentor)

When did he die: 4 (final arc)

Died and come back: 4 (no)

27.5/8 = 3.4375 - he's even deader then Alex.

Part 2 - these I will spoiler, I think.

First, Violet Range. Deliberately set up as a twist on the High-Heel–Face Turn and other female villain double standards - will she switch sides anyway?

Species: 3 (human)

Gender: 4

Age: 3.5 (vague, probably in her thirties)

Role: 4 (average between role as part of the not-so-quirky miniboss squad and role as mercenary)

Aesthetics: 3 (female version of Looks Like Cesare at best, but Beauty Equals Goodness is never true in my works)

Motivation: 2 (money)

Characterization: 3.5 (almost totally apathetic, but does have standards)

Contentment: 3 (neutral)

Morality of the story: 4

Idealism of the story: 3.5

33.5/10 = 3.35. A possibility, but hardly a certainty. After realizing that Evil Alex was completely insane and intended to kill everyone on the planet, she pulled an Enemy Mine, then went to work for the good guys. Still a Punch-Clock Hero at best, but a turn nonetheless.

Moving on to the Face/Heel side, let's take a look at one of the more unpleasant good guys: Qrtxian Viceroy Qxlrt.

Species: 2 (Allegedly Superior Species, bumped down because 1) they're a deconstruction and 2) qrtxians aren't really that appealing physically to humans)

Gender: 4

Age: 3.5 (somewhere over middle age)

Role: 5 (CIC of the qrtxian military - probably the closest fit)

Aesthetics: 3 (average - he's dignified, but he also has red eyes, but so does his whole species...)

Motivation: 5 (blatant Glory Hound)

Characterization: 4 (hubris, definitely)

Contentedness: 3

Morality of the story: 3

Cynicism of the story: 2.5

35/10 = 3.5. Verrry suspicious. He starts a War for Fun and Profit against Earth, but is really being used by a significantly worse faction, who eventually kill him off. Still a pretty unpleasant character, but no one ever accused the qrtxians of having too much Genre Savvy.

And just for fun, let's do the Mortality and Face/Heel scores of the character named after myself - not an Author Avatar, though he parodies the concept some.

Mortality:

Age: 3

Sexual orientation: 1

Role: 2.5 (somewhere between The Hero and The Smart Guy)

Race: 1

Gender: 3

Aesthetics: 3

Personality: 3

Virtues: 3

Flaws: 3

Species: 3

Occupation: 3 (adventurer is the best fit, but he also serves in the military, so I'm going with the average again)

Health: 2 (Made of Iron)

30.5/12 = 2.5416. Not all that likely to die. He doesn't.

And the Face–Heel Turn:

(3+4+5+1+3+2.5+1.5+1+3+2.5)/10 = 2.65. Again, unlikely. He doesn't. Surprise.

One more post from me. I'm just going to go ahead and run as many secondary characters (everyone who isn't one of the Nerds) through this thing as I can before I get sick of it. This could take some time, and a lot of space, so it'll go somewhere on the Unpublished Works page for my comics whenever I actually make it. First, though, I'm going to test my remaining major villains:

Aaron Baddgy: One of many Diabolical Masterminds. Arch-rival of Evil Alex until the latter killed him. Recently came back as some kind of intelligent undead, raised by Necromancer Bob.

  • Species: 1
  • Gender: 2
  • Age: 3.5 (vague, thirty-ish)
  • Role: 1 (rival Big Bad)
  • Aesthetics: 1 (formerly fairly attractive for a stick figure, now a decomposing corpse)
  • Motivation: 2
  • Characterization: 4
  • Contentedness: 2
  • Morality: 4
  • Idealism: 3.5

2.4, barely better then Evil Alex. He doesn't turn, but he does reassert his (well, intended) Magnificent Bastard status before he goes down. He also finishes off Necromancer Bob, which can only earn him "good" points.

Admiral Bub: Commander of Evil Alex's military forces. Arrogant, cowardly, and responsible for at least one act of war crimes, he's one of the more unlikeable villains.

  • Species: 1 (hard to classify, but not humanoid)
  • Gender: 2
  • Age: 1
  • Role: 4 (one of Alex's Co-Dragons)
  • Aesthetics: 2
  • Motivation: 1
  • Characterization: 2 (about all he has going for him is that he's sane)
  • Contentedness: 1
  • Morality: 4
  • Idealism: 3.5

2.15, even lower then his boss. To no one's surprise, he doesn't turn.

Necromancer Bob: Insane apparent minion of Evil Alex and Serial Killer. Sold his soul to so-called "beings for beyond" for immortality. Kills people for no apparent reason. Probably the nastiest villain in the entire saga. Currently undead.

  • Species: 1 (lich, borders on a Humanoid Abomination by this point)
  • Gender: 2
  • Age: 1
  • Role: 2 (opportunist)
  • Aesthetics: 1
  • Motivation: 1
  • Characterization: 1 (has very little personality besides pure evil)
  • Contentedness: 1
  • Morality: 4
  • Idealism: 3.5

At 1.75 he is the most irredeemable villain on this list. This probably doesn't need a spoiler, but he doesn't turn.

General Goatee: Another Diabolical Mastermind with a weird pseudo-military shtick. Currently something of a wild card.

  • Species: 3
  • Gender: 2
  • Age: 1
  • Role: 3
  • Aesthetics: 3
  • Motivation: 3 (a little difficult to parse - like most of my bad guys, he wants to Take Over the World, but unlike others, he has another motive besides simple power)
  • Characterization: 4
  • Contentedness: 2
  • Morality: 4
  • Idealism: 3.5

2.85, surprisingly unlikely for one of my more sympathetic Big Bads. He also doesn't turn, but he gets an Alas, Poor Villain moment - better then nothing, I suppose.

Toady: Evil Alex's dragon and sycophant - a lot smarter then he lets on. Is a literal intelligent giant toad.

  • Species: 1 (probably)
  • Gender: 2
  • Age: 3 (completely unclear, this is a guess)
  • Role: 4
  • Aesthetics: 1
  • Motivation: 2
  • Characterization: 3
  • Contentedness: 2
  • Morality: 4
  • Idealism: 3.5

2.55, doesn't look likely. He doesn't turn per se, but he more or less utterly destroys Alex's plans with a plan he had set up in case Alex ever decided he had outlived his usefulness - which happens in the climax. I'm inclined to feel the algorithm failed here.

Joe Smoe III: Yet another Diabolical Mastermind, and son of the late Joe Smoe (Jr.), arch-enemy of the James B Agents. The most Genre Savvy villain in a comic filled with them.

  • Species: 3
  • Gender: 2
  • Age: 4
  • Role: 1 (one of several contending Big Bads)
  • Aesthetics: 4
  • Motivation: 3 (again, mostly power, but there is some Avenging the Villain as well)
  • Characterization: 3.5
  • Contentedness: 2
  • Morality: 4
  • Idealism: 3.5

3.0 - could go either way. He turns, though it's more of a case of cutting himself a check then a true change of heart.

One-Eyed Ed: Space pirate wannabe, a recurring villain who comes back in a big way during the final story arc.

  • Species: 3
  • Gender: 2
  • Age: 3
  • Role: 5
  • Aesthetics: 2
  • Motivation: 2
  • Characterization: 4
  • Contentedness: 3
  • Morality: 4
  • Idealism: 3.5

3.15, still not that high. He turns.

The shadow-cows: The other main antagonist for the final arc. Introduced as part of a Whole-Plot Reference to Babylon 5, they seem at first like run-of-the-mill Abusive Precursors, but it's rather more complicated then that. This applies to the species overall - quite a few individuals break from the mold.

  • Species: 1
  • Age: 1
  • Role: 1
  • Aesthetics: 1
  • Motivation: 3.5 ( They intend to kill every sentient species in the galaxy, but they have a fairly good reason for it).
  • Characterization: 3
  • Contentedness: 5
  • Morality: 4
  • Idealism: 3.5

2.3, very unlikely. Hard to give a simple answer - what happens to them is something of an Affectionate Parody of the climax of the original Babylon 5.

Lets do Heel/Face Turning first. Doing Zaran and Howard from Forgotten lore (both are protagonists wo are actually tempted by the Big Bad to make a turn at some point), and just for the fun of it, The Herald (said Big Bad).

Romankhisasa Zaran: Face–Heel Turn.

  • Species: No idea. She's a demon, but the demons in the setting are more like aliens that just happen to look like stereotypical demons. Doesn't really fit in "pleasant", but not really "inhuman" eighter (she's humanoid, at the very least). Let's just say 3.
  • Gender: Female. 2.
  • Age: Vague. Probably equivalent of teenager, so lets go with 4.
  • Role: She's one member of the Power Trio. I quess that would make her one of the Heroes. So 1.
  • Aestethics: Glowy eyes, white skin, more teeth than should really be possible. It'd say 5.
  • Motivation: Both 1 and 3 fit, but I think 3 migth fit a bit better. She's mostly motivated by her worldview (which can be summed up as "violence and sufferign kinda suck, thing would be a lot better if people could get along with eachother.").
  • Characterization: No idea. She doesn't really fit into any. The jump from 1 (incorruptiple pure pureness) to 2 (anti hero) is just so big, she'd fall somewhere in the middle of it. Closer to 1 probably, so lets say that.
  • Contentness: Neutral. 3.
  • Morality of the story: Probably "the Good, the Bad and the Evil" (or more properly, "the Dood-ish, the Neutral, the Bad and the Horrible Eldricth Monstrosity"). 3.
  • Cynicism: Neighter fully idealistic or cynical, but more on the idealistic side. Assuming there are any other choises than 1 and 5, I'd say 2.
  • Total: 2,7 Doesn't turn.

Howard Waite: Face–Heel Turn.

  • Species: Human. 3.
  • Gender: Male. 4.
  • Age: Young Adult. 5.
  • Role: Like Zaran, so he'd also be 1.
  • Aestethics: Average. 3.
  • Motivation: Probably 3. To be honest he just kinda got dragged into situation where he has the power to fight against evil, so he kinda has to so because most people can't.
  • Characterization: Somewhat surly. Probably 3.
  • Contentness: Neutral. 3.
  • Morality: As above, so 2.
  • Cynicism: As above, so '2.
  • Total: 2,9 Doesn't turn, but actually comes pretty close before the intervention of the other characters.

The Herald of the Outer Gods: Heel–Face Turn.

Cynicism: As above, so 4.
  • Total: 1,9 No. He's evil all the way. And a dick..

Let's see how likely it is that the Big Bad of my planned Na No Wri Mo novel will Heel–Face Turn:

  • Species: Vampire - 2
