Legendary/Magical Five

    In General
The five magical girls who were responsible for routing the Disas forces in the war three years ago, saving humanity in the process.
  • Living Legend: All of them are legendary for their heroism.
  • Most Common Superpower: All of them are very well-endowed (except Tamara), especially Kurumi and Peipei after her reconstructive surgery.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Besides Tamara, all of them are very physically attractive, with large breasts, outfits that show plenty of skin, and very curvy figures. Tamara is the most conservatively-dressed and has a more average chest size, but even she has her moments in the manga.

The de-facto leader of the Legendary Five. While she is among the most capable magical girls in the world, the toll the war took on her led to her leaving the military in the hopes of pursuing a normal life. In time, however, the rise of new threats led to her returning to the fold.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Her karambit can easily cut apart flesh, bones, armor, engine blocks, etc.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: A minor example, but she is much more encouraging and supportive of Sayako after her ordeal in the beginning of the story in the anime as compared to the manga, in part due to the scene itself focusing more on the girl's stress.
  • An Arm and a Leg: During her fight with Giess she lost an arm, she gets better thanks to Kurumi. He even points out her Literal Disarming.
  • Back from the Dead: Her power, but only if she really wishes that the deceased comes back and there's something left for them to come from. Being turned into ash doesn't seem to hinder this, as revealed with Sayako.
  • Big Damn Kiss: With Kurumi in the last chapter to cement their Relationship Upgrade.
  • Chick Magnet: Has gained the affections of Kurumi, Tamara, Nozomi and Sayako. Even her late superior, Francine, joked about wanting to sleep with her.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Specializes in ripping apart her enemies with her karambit.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She may have had the looks of a Dark Magical Girl, but she is on the side of good.
  • The Dragonslayer: Lands the finishing blow on the zmey in Chapter 34, and kills another one in Chapter 51 with help from Kurumi and MORG.
  • Endearingly Dorky: She can really come across this way when she's trying to pretend that she's a normal girl, instead of a badass with military training and limited social skills.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: It's probably easier to list the girls who aren't crushing on her. It's even noted that she gets a lot of chocolates on Valentine's Day from many girls.
  • Experienced Protagonist: She's been a Magical Girl for several years now, and lead the Magical Five in the war against the Netherbeasts three years before the start of the story.
  • Exotic Weapon Supremacy: She's The Hero and a skilled warrior, using a karambit.
  • First Kiss: Ends up giving her first time to Tamara while trying to bring her back to normal right in front of Kurumi, much to the latter's horror.
  • Finger in the Mail: One of the main reasons Asuka is a Shell-Shocked Veteran. One day after one of her battles, she came back home to find that the Netherbeasts had kidnapped her parents. They gleefully let her know they were still alive... and that they'd return them to her, one small piece at a time. They'd already brought a hand in a box. By three weeks later, they had sent their heads, at which point she devoted herself to slaughtering every last one, no matter how dirty the tactics.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Downplayed. She's friendly to her classmates, stands up for Kurumi when she's being bullied, and sees her team as True Companions. She's also hardened by the past war with the Netherbeasts and has no problem dismembering dangerous terrorists and rogue magical girls. However, Kurumi states that Asuka wouldn't be able to torture an enemy for information.
  • Heroic BSoD:
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She refuses to think of herself as a genuine hero or savior, and tells Sadako that she isn't fond of herself. In fact, it is her drive to help others fulfill their dreams after realizing hers (to be a magical girl) ended up being horrible that drives her heroics in the first place, and she doesn’t even truly think of herself as a savior as she admits to Giess.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Asuka's saved the world, won the war and lost half her friends doing so. She's done fighting and wants an ordinary life. But there's still fighting to be done.
  • It's Personal: Asuka rages to take on the Disas after they killed her parents.
Asuka: Fine. Every one of them. No matter the method, no mater how dirty, I'll slaughter you all.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Kurumi relies on her to an extreme degree, to the point that the possibility of Asuka being angry with her over her use of torture has her instantly start thinking of ways to commit suicide.
  • Mistaken for Prostitute: After Iizuka picked her up from school in his official car, Nozomi thought Asuka was whoring herself out to him and was blunt enough to ask her that directly (which earned Nozomi a cheek-pull from Sayako as punishment; In the manga she also hit her over the head once for that, too).
Nozomi: Oh, thank goodness. I was so afraid you were whoring yourself out. [...] Anyway, I'm really glad you're not an after-school hooker.
  • Morph Weapon: Her karambit can change into a katana.
  • Murderous Thighs: Asuka uses her legs like this to bring down a terrorist in Chapter 6 so Kurumi can use truth serum on her.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Asuka's codename as Magical Girl was Rapture and she specializes in dismembering her enemies into Ludicrous Gibs. Either way shows the mood of the setting.
  • No Social Skills: Downplayed, but she is really bad at talking with normal teenagers, something she admits more than once to Sayako and Nozomi.
  • Oblivious to Love: She is completely oblivious to Kurumi's crush on her, even when she finds her sleeping in bed with her one day, merely curious about why she was there rather than putting it together.
  • Official Couple: With Kurumi in the final chapter.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Inverted Trope. Instead of a high school girl suddenly gaining magical powers to save the world, she's a magical heroine and special operations soldier who's already saved the world and is now trying to reintegrate into a normal high school life.
  • Refusal of the Call: Iizuka tried to invite Asuka join the M-Squad, but she refuses, due to her traumatic experiences in fighting the Netherbeasts... Then Sayako got involved in an attack and later, Nozomi gets kidnapped.
  • Relationship Upgrade: With Kurumi in the final chapter.
  • Reverse Grip: Justified as the karambit knife is actually designed to be held that way.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Asuka's experience in fighting the Netherbeasts screwed her hard. Flashbacks kept her awake at night, and seeing mascot characters handing out balloon animals brought memories of how Netherbeasts would wring and rip apart human flesh.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Pulls a speech in this vein on Leyla Basticon in Chapter 52. Doubles as a Rousing Speech when Iizuka has Shima patch her in to the comms of every allied unit so they can hear it.
Asuka: Prostrate? Seriously, I'm sick of how stupid you lot are. The revival of the Disas Beast... so that's what the Babel Brigade was after. Well, you did a splendid job. "His defeat must have been some sort of mistake"?... How naïve. Certainly, New York has been met with impending danger. However, we have the five magical girls who had once destroyed the Disas Beast, the second generation magical girls, and special forces trained in magical warfare. You're in awfully good spirits considering all you did was resurrect your decapitated king. And you were the ones who attacked us and lost in the first place.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: With regards to others' attraction and related behaviors. While she is right at home in combat and military enterprises, she has absolutely no idea how to handle things like a kiss, given she is so oblivious to other girls' attraction. Notably, when given her First Kiss, her immediate response is to internally panic and silently ask the nearest person what she should even do.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Her Magical Girl codename has been translated as Rapture, Rupture and Raptor.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: Asuka wanted to quit when she reached high school, and leave magical fighting behind, but was drawn back in by a series of terrorist attacks.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After an entire lifetime of pure hell, she's completely moved to tears when her powers manage to bring Sayoko back to life.
  • Trauma Button: Freezes up momentarily during the attack on Naha due to hearing the sounds of screaming and gunfire, reminders of the past war.
  • Undying Loyalty: Even after learning that Kurumi has been doing all the torture all along, she refuses to turn her back on her for it, because she has been dirtying her own hands on the war as well. If there's someone who Asuka should be angry with is with herself, for not realizing sooner that Kurumi wasn't as clean as she thought.
Asuka: I can't forgive myself. I... had a faint suspicion. We can't oppose such fiendish enemies with naïve methods alone. We have to get our hands dirty as well... I guess I wanted to keep up the illusion that I'm a magical girl of justice. Even then, in a way... I'm a fool! ... Kurumi, you took the dirty jobs, to carry the burden for me, right? You don't have to shoulder it all on your own anymore. Share the painful burdens with your friends.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The final chapter reveals that Asuka unknowingly and inadvertently resurrected Francine after the Disas Beast was first slain. The resurrected Francine then went on to form Babel and the rest is history.
  • Vapor Wear: Rapture Asuka isn't wearing anything under her skirt, as seen when she's flung directly at the wall and the camera views her from behind.
  • Warrior Therapist: As a Shell-Shocked Veteran, she's got training in dealing with her own PTSD. That means she knows exactly what to say and do when Sayako has an episode from her attack in the second episode of the anime, thinking she isn't strong because she didn't do anything to help when the attack happened.
Asuka: (crouches down after Sayako falls to her knees and starts shaking) Deep breath. Look at me. (Sayako does) Big inhale. (Sayako does) That's good. Now exhale slowly. Inhale...
    [...]
Sayako: (about the panic attack) It, um... had to do with what happened.
Asuka: I'm so sorry. You should try to forget what you saw that day.
Sayako: I need to talk about it, though. I keep thinking, I was able to go home because nothing bad happened to me. But what about everyone who didn't get to go home, y'know? And why... why didn't I do anything? Why'd I just stand there and watch? [...] I wasn't even thinking of how to help them. I was only scared for myself! [...] There are those who would have jumped in! Not me. I'm too weak and cowardly.
    [...]
Asuka: It is true. You're not strong like that, Sayako. But... it takes a different kind of strength to resist pretending to be strong. Acknowledging your weaknesses and living your truth: that's courage. I knew a girl like that, once.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: She had to grow up fast under combat conditions, and acts very much like an adult rather than a teenager. This causes her some problems in relating to Nozomi, who very much thinks like a teenager.
  • You Are in Command Now: Francine passed command of the Magical Girl squad to Asuka in her dying breath.

    'War Nurse' Kurumi

Kurumi Mugen/War Nurse Kurumi

A magical girl with a specialty in field medicine and interrogation. She was a victim of bullying and domestic abuse until Asuka saved her and recruited her as a magical girl. Now, she is completely devoted to Asuka (almost to a fanatical degree) and fights on with passion for the woman she loves.

  • Abusive Parents: Her father had raped a girl for days and then murdered her, and her mother was the kind of person who would be attracted to a hardened criminal. This comes to a head when her father tries to rape her, and even though her mother stops him when she happens to walk in, she blames Kurumi for having such a lascivious body.
Kurumi's mother: With nothing but your chest getting bigger, it's like your body was made to tempt men. You make me sick!
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: Kurumi is positively ecstatic when her family is kidnapped by the Disas and tortured like Asuka's was.
Kurumi: As if people like them can be considered hostages, you idiot!
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Finally admits her feelings for Asuka in the final chapter. Luckily, Asuka accepts them, and they kiss.
  • Barrier Warrior: Her magical barrier is the strongest among the Legendary Five, that even at close range, where MG barriers interfere with each other rendering them useless, hers remain active.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She fell in love with Asuka when the latter stood up for her during her terrible school situation, being honest and Frank with her and making an effort to get her away from the worst of it.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Do NOT call her any kind of object, such as a "sandbag." Due to her bullying, where she was treated as that, an ATM, an AirSoft target, a garbage can, a guinea pig, a pool mop, or a general garbage disposal, she will have a flashback to those times, then turn murderous. Chisato soon learns this the hard way in Chapter 20.
    • In a slightly more humorous way, do not try to flirt with Asuka nor mention she might make a good pair with someone else.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Shares one with Asuka in the final chapter.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: She's a magical healer, but she uses her knowledge of anatomy and medicine to apply that healing skill in such ways as complex brain surgery.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She can get downright murderous (in her mind) about anyone who is potential competition between her and Asuka, especially Sadako, though Tamara kissing Asuka is another standout.
  • Combat Medic: Kurumi is a nurse-themed magical girl, by way of Nurse Witch Komugi or Nurse Angel Ririka SOS. But given the setting, that huge syringe of hers can be loaded with substances that can melt the flesh off Netherbeasts. She also serves as the group's Torture Technician and her codename is "War Nurse".
  • Cute and Psycho: In spades. Especially in Torture Technician and Soft-Spoken Sadist mode.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was a victim of school bullying and the teachers did nothing to help her, which is why she prefers her life as a magical girl over being a civilian. It's later explained that she was bullied because her father raped and murdered a woman years ago, but had gotten off light due to being a minor. Kurumi started getting bullied when her father's name was leaked on the internet. Her father also tried to rape her at one point but was stopped when her mother walked in, and then her mother blamed HER for being too lavicious.
  • Driven to Suicide: When she feels obligated to reveal to Asuka that she's been torturing prisoners, she actively plans out her suicide in the likely event that Asuka hates her for it. Luckily for her, Asuka is only angry at herself for being naive enough to think that her side was entirely clean, and accepts Kurumi's deeds.
  • Fainting: Played for Laughs, as she faints from the idea of staying close to Asuka who is wearing a sexy maid outfit.
  • Fingore: One of her torture methods is to insert metal spikes under the nails of her prisoner.
  • First Kiss: Finally gives her first time to an unconscious Asuka, though she's jealous that Asuka's first time went to Tamara while they were trying to bring her back to sanity.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Gives a verbal one to Asuka in Chapter 18 that is also a low-key What the Hell, Hero?.
Kurumi: If our dead comrades heard you now, they'd be furious with you. I know how you feel, Asuka-san. But no matter how many scars you endured... you always marched back onto the battlefield. As long as you're with me, I can — and will — keep fighting.
  • Hidden Depths: Who would have thought that this meek and cute girl is a Psycho Lesbian, Torture Technician, and a Yandere who wants to be a Magical Girl forever? The entire reason she became a Torture Technician in the first place is because she wanted to do the dirty work so that Asuka and the others wouldn't have to. Despite favoring Asuka, she also expresses genuine sorrow over the friends she lost in the Disas War, and she feels they don’t get the recognition they deserve for their sacrifices.
  • Hospital Hottie: While she doesn't work at a hospital, she is a nurse-themed Magical Girl and an actual nurse in her own right, acting as the team's healer, and also sports some ample cleavage.
  • Love Confession: She confesses to Asuka her feelings during the final chapter and Asuka accepts her feelings.
  • Official Couple: With Asuka in the final chapter.
  • Power at a Price: In Chapter 54, she drinks her "trump card," which she calls "magical doping," supercharging her magical shields for a limited time, but both she and Abigail know that there are sure to be dangerous side effects. Unfortunately for Abigail, Kurumi is fully willing to risk her life for Asuka.
  • Psycho Lesbian: The "psycho" part is usually played for laughs, and despite her Ax-Crazy nature her love for Asuka is genuine.
  • Rape as Backstory: Downplayed. Her father tried to rape her, but was stopped when her mother walked in.
  • Relationship Upgrade: With Asuka in the final chapter.
  • Sociopathic Hero: Is revealed to be this when she tortures Nazani. Clearly mentally unhinged but fortunately she's also incredibly loyal.
Kurumi: Thanks. But I'm no angel. Us magical girls were given the dirty work. Don't get me wrong. It's not like I was forced to do this. How could I make my precious friend torture someone? I know how very... sensitive Asuka is.
  • Sociopathic Soldier: She outright states she loves being a magical girl more than she ever did being a regular girl. She also takes a tad too much pleasure in torturing and interrogating her victims.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: When she goes into Torture Technician mode.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Is undoubtedly the most morally black of the Magical Five, but is on the side of good and completely loyal to her friends and especially Asuka.
  • Torture Technician: Her other work is using her chemical and medical abilities to get information, which usually involves torture. She doesn't need to be extracting information, though - she'll happily torture a captured girl for the fun of it.
  • Truth Serums: Carries such a substance. She notes that she still has to work out the amount of time the victim can answer questions before passing out.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is completely and utterly devoted and loyal to Asuka (and to a lesser extent, the rest of the Magical Five). So loyal, in fact, she's even volunteered to be the team's Torture Technician so the others wouldn't have to shoulder that burden.
  • Yandere: After being saved by Asuka from bullying in school when she was younger (by pulling her out of class and demanding she not listen to the "worthless assholes" bullying her), she becomes infatuated with her on account of her "honesty and frankness." Usually this is Played for Laughs.
Kurumi: I... I can do anything, as long as it's for you...
  • You Can Keep Her!: The Disas try to blackmail her by sending her her family in pieces, but she just shoots the messengers and taunts them for thinking she'd care for the safety of people she detests.

    'Just Cause' Mia

Mia Cyrus/Just Cause Mia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d5380cac_e3e5_407c_b680_e257f103a720.jpeg

Voiced by: Eriko Matsui (Japanese), Emily Neves (English)

A magical girl with a specialty in magic-enhanced firearms, and the daughter of a US Army soldier. After the war, she continued to serve her country as a soldier, but her friends in the Legendary Five are never far from her thoughts.

  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Mia Cyrus' favored combat technique is to magically enhance her firearms, dramatically increasing their penetration power. She also makes good use of her X-Ray Vision, allowing her to shoot down hostiles from the other side of the building.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Asks one in Chapter 56 to Brigadier after hearing her reasoning.
Mia: No matter how decent you sound... why have you been hiding your face with a mask? I'm worried, if you don't think you're doing something bad, you wouldn't hide your face!
  • Bayonet Ya: Has a detachable bayonet on her rifle, which she uses as a handheld combat knife if necessary.
  • Blood Knight: When Disas forces raid Naha, Mia's more than willing to lead a section of MORG (Magical Operations Response Group) operators into the downtown area and kill the creatures.
Mia: When a magical girl goes into combat, whatever the territory or nationality, they've got extralegal authorization. I don't care how many of them there are right now. I'll destroy them all. [...] Why not deploy the one weapon we've got that can take on those Halloween Disas solo?
  • Deliberate Injury Gambit: Intentionally allows Francine to stab her with her spear so as to both get close to her with the bayonet in her hand, and to make sure she can't move away.
    Mia: I got you, idiot.
  • The Dragonslayer: Kills a zmey in the attack on New York in Chapter 50 by shooting its head until she has a hole, then throwing a grenade into its brain.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: Mia works with the SAD in black ops missions.
  • Foe Romance Subtext: During her battle with Brigadier, considering they did have a romance.
  • Genki Girl: She's the most upbeat of the Magical Five, always energetic and cracking jokes about something.
  • The Gunslinger: Due to her main weapon being a gun that can transform into other types, this is her overall style.
  • Insult of Endearment: Her insults to Tamara, as well as calling Francine "moron," amount to this, and neither seems to truly object.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: Her final battle with Francine has definite elements of this. Despite everything, part of her does still love the French girl, though she forces it down and tells herself that the Francine she knew is gone.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: She's got the filthiest mouth of all the magical girls and could probably go for a swear-off with Abby. It comes with her much more devil-may-care attitude.
  • Long-Range Fighter: Downplayed. She specializes in indoor close-quarters combat, and is good with a knife, but her primary specialty is in sniping and overall shooting foes before they are within melee striking distance. She is famous as the number one magical girl in shootouts.
  • Mage Marksman: Her preferred combat style. She uses a gun that can take on various forms, coupled with being armor piercing and her X-Ray Vision.
  • Mildly Military: She is very casual about all things military, outright calling her superiors "geezers" in front of their faces. This puts her as a Red Oni to Tamara's blue.
  • Morph Weapon: Her magical girl weapon is a derringer that can be transformed into a wide variety of firearms.
  • Mutual Kill: With Francine, by stabbing her with a bayonet in the chest while impaling herself on Francine's spear.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Mia Cyrus? Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
  • Not So Similar: With Blanka. She believes that he is fighting for something he feels he can believe in, and has a degree of respect for that, even asking what kind of justice would allow the actions he aids, but is left completely blindsided by the revelation that he fights for love, not justice at all.
Mia Cyrus: Listen... my parents died in a terrorist bombing. Well, it's not anything uncommon. There are just as many different definitions of justice as there are people in the world, so they say... and I'm sure you also have your own. But look! Take a look around you! There must be thousands already dead! And no matter how well things play out, thousands more will die. And once the Disas Beast gets serious, it'll spell doom for the human race. ... What sort of justice could make you do all this? Does such a thing exist in this world?
Blanka: ... what drives me on isn't justice. It's love. Of the personal kind.
    Mia Cyrus: ... What?
  • Overranked Soldier: She's a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army. In real-life, it would be impossible for her to hold such a high rank: The magical girls are stated to be teenagers and the rank of Sergeant Major requires a minimum of 18 years of service.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: Blonde with blue eyes and big breasts, she's definitely an American.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The loud mouthed American (Red) to Tamara's stoic Russian (Blue).
  • Sad Clown: She's upbeat and constantly cracking jokes, and she's by far the most sane of the Magical Five, but it's clear that she's carrying her share of ghosts from the war.
  • Secret Identity: Averted, she's the only Magical Girl who revealed her identity to public.
  • Secret Relationship: She and Francine were in a relationship during the war which they hid from the rest of the other girls (who they believed too young to understand).
Francine: We need to keep this a secret. Right?
Mia: Yeah. Let's keep it hush-hush. Especially around Asuka and Kurumi and everyone. They're just kids.
  • Sergeant Rock: She holds the rank of Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army.
  • Superhero Packing Heat: Favors magically-enhanced firearms, which combined with her X-Ray Vision means hiding behind covers won't save you.
  • Sweet Tooth: She loves ice cream and other treats.
  • Taking You with Me: Gets impaled by Francine so she could stab her former lover in the heart.
  • Together in Death: With Francine.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: She and Tamara really enjoy insulting each other, as friends do.
Tamara: You're always covered in blood... You haven't changed at all, Texas girl.
Mia: Shut it, Russkie. Go drink vodka or something.
    Tamara: I'm still underage.
Mia: It was obviously a joke!
  • We Used to Be Friends: As her former lover, Mia takes the identity of Brigadier the hardest, forcing herself not to see the terrorist as someone she cared for, but only partly succeeding. The fact that Brigadier is kind to her and asking her to join does not help.
Mia: What the hell? You may look the same on the outside, but you're not the same on the inside. The world changed... during the Distonian War when magical girls appeared.
Brigadier: If the world changes, the people who live in it have to change, too. A new world order. You haven't changed a bit.
Mia: Oh... I'm kind of a clumsy person.
Brigadier: I like that about you.
    Mia: ... Stop.
  • X-Ray Vision: Mia Cyrus often uses her magical power to enhance her vision into this. Combined with her magically-enhanced guns, hiding behind covers won't save you.

    'Phoenix' Tamara

A magical girl with a mastery over fire, further enhanced by her enchanted flamethrower. After the war, she joined the Russian military in the hopes of helping her sister.

  • Braids of Action: Her hair is tied on long pigtails, and she's a deadly Magical Girl Warrior.
  • Brainwashed: The Russian military have been doing this to her out of disliking her autonomy and general personality. After being saved in Chapter 45, it stops.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Once Oboroten' abducts her, she suffers brainwashing via an illusionary traumatic experience of Asuka murdering her older sister in cold blood and going on a rampage.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: Tamara works with the GRU in black ops missions.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Her left eye is covered as a magical girl.
  • Fiery Stoic: She is the girl with the most direct association with fire, from her powers to her weapon, but also emotes the least out of any of them.
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: Her weapon is an exceptionally powerful magical flamethrower.
  • First Kiss: Ends up giving her first kiss to Asuka. Kurumi isn't impressed seeing it and would have killed her if Tamara wasn't her friend.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Gives a speech to this effect to Asuka during her Heroic BSoD in Chapter 31's flashback. She tells for Asuka to mourn Mia after they take one hour to deal with Sayako in Chapter 61, as a deliberate reference to this moment.
Tamara: Then, what now? If we don't fight, then everything will be over for real. No excuses, Rapture. Just hang on for one more hour.
    Asuka: ... One hour?
Tamara: For one hour. Muster up your last bit of courage.
    Asuka: And after that...?
Tamara: We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She loves stuffed animals and sleeps with a big stuffed pig.
  • Kill It with Fire: Her primary weapon is a Fire-Breathing BFG which she claims can generate the sun's heat to immolate her target. She can also control the fire to an extent, instantly extinguishing it with a snap of her finger.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Her reaction after Asuka and Kurumi undo her brainwashing, under which she had attacked her fellow Magical Five members.
Tamara: Why did I... fight against my friends, the "Magical Five". What have I done...
  • Mystical White Hair: Her hair color, which sets her apart from the others in the Legendary Five.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When she, the most stoic character, bursts out screaming in Ukraine, it is a clear sign that something is horribly wrong.
  • Playing with Fire: Has some control over fire. Including being able to extinguish that which she sets with a snap of her fingers.
  • The Phoenix: Her codename is 'Phoenix' and she uses flames to immolate her enemies.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The stoic Russian (Blue) to Mia's loud-mouthed American (Red).
  • The Reveal: Tamara's beloved sister is actually a captured Nightmare-class Disas creating an illusion that she thinks is her sister, but seems to accept her affection.
  • The Stoic: Out of the Five, she's the one to emote the least.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: She forcibly forgot about her sister's death when said sister, a prostitute, was "chopped up" right in front of her eyes for attempting to steal money from her pimps and run away together.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: While her snark is more understated, she fences with Mia at full blast.
  • Warrior Therapist: Acts as this to Asuka, helping her to keep fighting when things get rough. By the final chapter, she even helps her by saying she doesn't need to fight anymore.
Tamara: You have the power to accept what cannot be changed. And the courage to change what needs to be changed. And the ability to distinguish between what we can't change and should change. [...] A certain theologian I like to say. I really wanted to tell Francine that. I didn't have time in that situation, but... Asuka, you don't have to fight anymore.
  • The World Is Just Awesome: Downplayed in the final chapter.
Tamara: This world isn't perfect. But it's the world Francine wanted to break. And the world we fought to protect.

Click here to see her after surgery, aka her current appearance.

Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa (Japanese), Jill Harris (English)

A magical girl with a mastery of the martial arts. She has not been seen or heard from since the end of the war...

  • An Arm and a Leg: Gets both of her legs chopped off by Sekhmet in Chapter 59. They're evidently restored by Chapter 62, likely by Kurumi.
  • Anime Chinese Girl: Her magical girl outfit and her Chinese ethnicity appearance made her look like a stereotypical one.
    • Zigzagged as she underwent surgery to look like an unrecognizable dark-skinned blonde with a large bust, but still keeps her magical girl outfit.
  • Breast Expansion: As part of her full-body makeover. She even casually notes it herself in her first scene.
Peipei: Hunh, I think my boobs got bigger.
  • Dye or Die: Gets a total makeover when she quits the Chinese military, so as to escape them for good and raise "Astrologer."
  • The Ghost: At least in the anime. Since Peipei appears rather late in the plot of the manga, she doesn't show up in the anime at all short of a few brief cameos in flashbacks despite being advertised as a main character in the opening.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She had two during her time as as one of the Legendary Five. After her surgery, she traded it in for a Tomboyish Pony Tail.
  • Greed: Notably, unlike the rest of the girls, her plans after the battle were to get money.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: She starts as one of the Magical Five, and joined the military for some time after like them on their countries. However, she becomes an assassin for hire in order to take care of a girl she saved on her last mission, the "Astrologer." The Babel Brigade takes the Astrologer hostage in order to force her to work for them, but she joins Asuka after Chisato saves the Astrologer.
  • Younger Than They Look: After she underwent her surgery, not only did she become a dark-skinned blonde, but with added height and bust size she now looks like a woman in her early twenties rather the rest of the girls (who are still in their teens).
  • Professional Killer: While the other girls have joined their nations' military, Peipei is an assassin for hire (though she did work for the military for a time).
  • Two Aliases, One Character: As a magical girl, she goes by the title "Shantoulon" (Two-Headed Dragon), but as an assassin, she goes by "Liu Lang Ze" (Vagrant).
  • Verbal Tic: Ends many sentences with "-nyaa."

A mouse-type spirit who aids the Legendary Five.

  • Badass Adorable: Isn't above getting into combat when things get rough, even taking up a gun.
  • Expy: This is what you get when you put Pikachu in a Magical Girl series, but let him talk more.
  • Mr. Exposition: He's the most common source of exposition on the magical world. Sometimes to the characters, other times across the fourth wall to the viewers.
  • Power Fist: His magical weapon is a set of spiked brass knuckles.
  • Psychic Link: Can forge these with magical girls to share perceptions, though he apparently needs permission to do so.
  • Robot Buddy: Essentially acts as this, with "modes" and functions that can be turned on or off.
  • Verbal Tic: chu!

An illegal magical girl in Okinawa created for the Babel Brigade with the help of the cyborg Giess. After losing her leg in a car accident that killed her mother and drove her father to drunken abuse, she was ready to die until Giess gave her a second chance to find happiness, at the cost of countless human lives...

  • Abusive Parents: Her father tried to have her become a prostitute. When she was rejected because she was a minor, her father tried to beat her to death.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She gets to be the star of a special mission in Chapter 38.1.
  • Armed Legs: Her prosthetic leg has hidden knives.
  • Artificial Limbs: Is given an artificial leg courtesy of Babel Library after she joins the group.
  • Boxed Crook: Recruited into M-Squad, since Magical Girls are so rare. Kurumi places a magical ribbon around her neck that will cause her unbearable agony if she tries to betray them.
  • Close-Range Combatant: While other magical girls often do come into close range, Chisato specializes in Okinawan karate as her fighting style.
  • Crazy-Prepared: She practices traditional Okinawan Karate, and thus knows techniques for pretty much any situation she finds herself in... Including facing a four-armed opponent.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: In his dying moments, Giess reveals that he and the Babel Brigade engineered the accident that ruined her life in order to make it easier for them to recruit her and the people she killed in revenge for her losing a leg and her mother's death were innocent all along.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Long before she became a Magical Girl, she used to be a karate student before losing her leg in an accident that took her mother's life. Her father was about to offer to the Sex Industry, but was spared due to being a minor, and nearly beaten to death by him after that failed.
Kurumi: You... you've gone through quite a lot, haven't you...
  • Despair Event Horizon: Seemingly crosses it when she learns that Giess, the one person she trusted, had been manipulating her all along.
Chisato: It... It was so painful just being alive... Just when I thought I found hope... it turned out to be a lie... I can't take it anymore... Hurry up and kill me...!
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Before the start of the story she was just a young girl encouraged by her mother to become a martial arts practitioner, by the end of her arc she has become a Dark Magical Girl, put the Spirit World-Human alliance in jeopardy and nearly killed Kurumi before being stopped.
  • Handicapped Badass: after given magical powers, her prosthetics also acts as weapons through hidden knives.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After being captured by Kurumi and realizes the truth about the Babel Brigade's involvement in her accident, she joins the M-Squad alongside Nazani in hunting them down, though she was put in a Restraining Bolt through a ribbon in her neck in case she betrays them.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: During her fight with War Nurse, her opponent, seeing she was a Karateka, brought her to the ground to take advantage of her knowledge of Brazilian Ju Jitsu... And found out the hard way Chisato is trained in Okinawan Karate and is proficient in ground fighting as well.
  • Impaled Palm: Both of her hands get stabbed by a brainwashed Tamara during their fight and is pinned to a wall as a result. Thankfully, Nazani rescues her shortly after while Asuka and Kurumi take over fighting Tamara.
  • Instant Expert: She only recently became a magical girl, yet manages to hold an advantage for most of her battle with the more experienced Kurumi before being paralyzed by the latter's syringe. Justified because she has prior karate experience, and learning to be a magical girl is at least partially instinctual.
  • Kick Chick: Her attacks come up as this, and are the actual reason she is called Whiplash.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Openly states this in regards to the Babel Brigade while saving Astrologer. She was fighting for Giess, not the terrorist cause.
Chisato: The reason I fought... was for a certain pitiful child soldier. And definitely not for your Brigade.
  • Revenge: She enjoyed murdering the people who killed her mother and mutilated her.
  • Sixth Ranger: To the M-Squad, alongside Nazani.
  • Stripperiffic: Her magical girl form shows a lot of skin.
  • These Hands Have Killed: She becomes horrified upon discovering the people responsible for her mother's death had been mind-controlled to do so, even Laughing Mad.
  • Transformation Trinket: Hers is a bracelet that transforms into a whip... or rather a set of bandages she can use as Handwraps of Awesome or as a whip.
  • Underestimating Badassery: At the receiving end more than once, as her opponents repeatedly fail to anticipate what kind of techniques traditional Karate includes.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The accident that ruined her life was actually engineered by the Babel Brigade.
  • Villainous BSoD: Has one on realizing that she was manipulated by the Babel Brigade all along.
  • Villainous Valour: Granted, she was backed up by Babel Brigade, but she showed lots of guts when going against the Magical Five and an entire army of conventional troops, magical-powered operatives and their Spirit World allies despite being quite a newbie to the Magical Girl business.

Voiced By: Yumi Hara (Japanese), Aya Hisakawa (Japanese, as Brigadier), Mallorie Rodak (English), Caitlin Glass (English, as Brigadier)

The former leader of the eleven magical girls who fought the Disas during the Distonian War, hailing from France. She is also leader of the Babel Brigade and the masked Magical Girl codenamed "Queen" and "Brigadier."

  • Affably Evil: She is relatively kind to her former comrades, but this just goes to show how utterly warped her mind is that she believes they will agree with her. She eventually explains by way of a posthumous email how Asuka's powers of resurrection function, and sincerely admits defeat, asking her to not let others know of her powers lest she be controlled to keep a hold on them by others.
  • Apologetic Attacker: She is genuinely saddened by fighting her former comrades, and outright tells Mia that she is sorry after she stabs her. She even reacts with relief when Mia first shows up still alive in Chapter 60, saying that she is glad that she did not stab her former lover.
  • Back from the Dead: She claims that despite Asuka seeing her die, she "came back to life," and in the finale, it turns out that Asuka unwittingly used her powers to bring her back.
  • Bad Boss: Downplayed. As Brigadier, she does help people and gets them to follow her out of loyalty, but doesn't seem concerned if they die.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: As Brigadier, she is capable of fighting in a white skirt suit with no jacket.
  • Badass Biker: 'Chevalier' Francine the French Magical Girl is known to ride her bike into battle, wielding a spear, like modern-style jousting. She's the original leader of the Magical Girl team, who passed leadership to Asuka.
  • Barrier Warrior: She is capable of creating shields that are tougher than the normal shields used by both the Magical Girls and their allies. As Brigadier, she can kill many people with them at long range, and can casually perform a Bullet Catch and destruction on an Orichalcum sniper round without looking.
  • Beneath the Mask: No pun intended. Mia notes that if she truly felt she was doing nothing wrong, she wouldn’t have tried to hide her identity behind a mask, something that Francine doesn’t deny.
Francine: I don't want to kill you after all.
  • Big Bad: She is the head of the Babel Brigade and seeks to establish a world monarchy ruled by magical girls while serving as its Queen.
  • Cast as a Mask: Her different identities are given two different voice actors and seiyus in the anime, making it look like they are totally separate characters until The Reveal in the manga that they are one and the same.
  • Char Clone: She’s a blonde girl with a Cool Mask and has a deep relationship with the main heroines. She also fits the Dark Messiah archetype as she believes magical girls should rule the world and work towards fixing humanity’s problems like poverty and corruption rather than just live normal lives or be used as mere weapons. And to top it off, she seeks to do it while conducting The Purge of ordinary humans along the way.
  • Coitus Uninterruptus: In Chapter 32, she has a conversation on the phone with a subordinate and arranged tactics while not stopping having sex with Abigail.
  • Dead Man Writing: Leaves an email for Asuka to release after her death, explaining about Asuka's powers of resurrection and admitting defeat.
  • Expy: Her pre-Face–Heel Turn costume just screams Saber.
  • Fallen Hero: She's later known as the Brigadier.
  • Foe Romance Subtext: During her battle with Mia, considering they did have a romance. She is especially grateful for not killing her, and seems to truly want to be with her again.
  • Hero of Another Story: Chevalier's history of anti-Disas operations prior to her death.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: She hits on both Asuka and Kurumi, frequently enough to the point where Kurumi threatens to chemically castrate her. In Chapter 56, she was also shown in a flashback to sleep with Mia. As Brigadier, she also has lots of sex with her current girlfriend Pick Scissors Abby.
  • Motive Rant: Gives two in succession, one before and one after revealing her identity.
  • Mutual Kill: Gets stabbed in the heart by Mia after impaling her in Chapter 60.
  • Posthumous Character: Francine was killed during the Mt. Aso operation. Until it's revealed that she survived somehow.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: Gets a great one during the assault on United Nations headquarters in Chapter 48:
Brigadier: "Good morning New York... and welcome to hell."
  • Secret Relationship: Chapter 56 reveals she was secretly dating Mia during the war, and they didn't tell their fellow teammates about it.
  • Signature Move: Aside from her Magic Calorie Roll-Up, she has a habit of making cubes of magical energy that compress those within until they die painfully. She has been doing this since the end of the Distonian War.
  • Society Is to Blame: She doesn't consider herself wrong in her terrorism because in her mind, the world is cruel, and if riots caused the death of her family without anything changing, then she can't be wrong for wanting to accomplish her goals, no matter how she does so.
Francine: I don't think it's wrong. It's only natural, isn't it? We're in a world of sinners... In order to improve the world. I'm going to live my life and carry out my plans the way I see fit.
  • Super Supremacist: Believes that magical girls should rule the world to solve the problems caused by humanity.
  • Unexplained Recovery: It is known that she recovered from Mt. Aso... but not how that was possible when Asuka clearly could confirm her death. All that is confirmed is that, by her own words, she came back to life. Ultimately, it is subverted in the final chapter, where an email posthumously sent to Asuka explains what happened.
  • Villain Has a Point: When she reveals herself and explains her plan, she states that killing all of the Disas will not solve humanity's problems like crime, poverty, and corruption, and their powers should be used to fix them. She proves her point with her own childhood experience where wars spread across Europe after the Disas threat was over. She also points out to Mia that eliminating every cartel won't stop people from obtaining drugs nor corrupt politicians from exploiting the people. What shakes M-Squad isn't just the fact she was once their friend but that they don't deny anything she says.
  • We Can Rule Together: Attempts this to Mia during their final fight. Notably, Mia doesn't say she never would, just that it is "a little too late for that," indicating she may have been willing to join her at some point.
Francine: Why don't you just join me? You activities as a soldier... you did dirty jobs with the CIA. Fighting barrenly against a Mexican drug cartel... Even if you stop the biggest drug cartel... soon the next one will take over. If you destroy an organization, another one will be created. The trinity of evil, consisting of drug addicts, corrupt officials and drug dealers... This problem is a systematic one. Drugs will not go away as long as there's people who want them. I've been talking about that for a while now.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Despite her wish to create a worldwide police state monarchy, she is doing so in an attempt to rid the world of crime, poverty, and any number of other mundane issues.
  • What Is Evil?: Argues that since the evils of the real world still exist and can thrive, what she does as a global terrorist is not wrong.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Surprisingly this despite being a terrorist who wishes to establish a worldwide magical girl regime. Mia herself comments how she's too good at heart for an actual terrorist.
Mia: You can't be a terrorist with that kind of naïveté, Francine.

  • Boisterous Bruiser: Very enthusiastic about her work.
Claudia: We just gotta beat the crap outta them here!
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: As seen in one of Asuka's dreams/flashbacks, she was engulfed (screaming) by a Blob Monster and dissolved leaving only a skeleton. Whether that was left is unknown as at this point Asuka wakes up.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She is only seen in flashbacks, as she is long dead.

  • Animal-Eared Headband: Wears a hood on her head to this effect, more if a hat with animal ears in practice.
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Tigers, hence her code name.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up with the other two second generation girls to support the Magical Five against Sekhmet in Chapters 59 through 60.
  • Heroic Willpower: Able to hold back Varvara's aphrodisiac until it is away from her, unlike Claire.
  • Power Fist: Her preferred weapon is a set of heavily armored, clawed gauntlets as big as her head.

    'Unicorn' Claire

Unicorn Claire

A second generation magical girl from United Kingdom, affiliated with the SIS.

  • Animal Motifs: Unicorns, particularly a headband with a single horn on her head in her transformation.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up with the other two second generation girls to support the Magical Five against Sekhmet in Chapters 59 through 60.
  • Forceful Kiss: Loses herself to Varvara's aphrodisiac, leading her to give one to So-Yeon. She gets better after being knocked out.
  • Genius Bruiser: According to Jade, she skipped grades and already graduated from a university by the time of Chapter 47, an impressive feat considering most magical girls are still at the age of high school.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Her weapon is a broadsword.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Threatens to kill So-Yeon if she doesn't "forget" how she fell to an enemy's aphrodisiac after it is mentioned the first time.

    In General
  • Badass Normal: They are each trained to fight rogue magical girls, magicians, and Disas, despite having no powers themselves.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite taking their work at a maid cafe very seriously (though they are terrible at it), they are still relatively good at their actual jobs.
  • The Fellowship Has Ended: They are disbanded in the final chapter, though their cafe is still used as a method to get information from the Magic War Corps of the National Police Agency.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Lost his right arm during the final battle three years prior.
  • Artificial Limbs: Has a metal replacement for his lost arm.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: Formerly with the Special Forces Group before losing an arm forced him to take up a command role with M-Squad instead.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Screams something to this effect at a panicked Shima in Chapter 52.
Iizuka: And you call yourself a member of the Self Defense Force!? Do not falter! It is no exaggeration, the survival of the human race is at stake!! We happen to be the final fortress standing in the way! Our main fight force are the magical girls! What good will it do if we, their support, lose faith first!? Get yourself together!
  • The Handler: His official position puts him as Asuka's. In practice, he's also her Parental Substitute.
  • Oh, Crap!: In Chapter 52, when he realizes that Professor Greenburg's numbers he spoke, the Ring of Uruboros, and the ensuing magical vortex in New York means that the Brigadier is bringing back the Disas Beast.
  • Parental Substitute: Has become Asuka's guardian after she lost her parents.
  • The Stoic: Most often, he is very calm, which makes the moments when he isn't all the more potent.
  • Sole Survivor: Of the Japanese contingent sent to Mt. Aso when the Disas invaded the Earth.

Second Lieutenant Shima

Voiced by: Shiori Mikami (Japanese), Jad Saxton (English)

Once a member of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Physical Training School, Shima is a wrestling student champion and a third dan in judo.

  • Action Girl: Despite having no inborn magical power herself, she manages to hold her own amongst M-Squad. However, she is more often in control of communications.
  • Communications Officer: Her usual role for M-Squad.
  • Foil: Much nicer and less stoic than Kaede.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has a brief one in Chapter 52 brought on by the return of the Disas Beast until Iizuka yells at her.
Shima: At this rate we'll... And it was such a close call three years ago...

    Kaede

  • Action Girl: Despite having no inborn magical power herself, she manages to hold her own amongst M-Squad.
  • Foil: The more no-nonsense soldier to Shima's more excitable one, including holding customers at the cafe at gunpoint if they hang around too long.
  • Sour Supporter: For the maid cafe side of things. She wouldn’t bother with it if she had a choice. She gets more annoyed when they get more customers, as it was supposed to be cover rather than their actual jobs.

  • Da Chief: What she is in practice.
  • Fair Cop: A very attractive police commissioner, whose attractiveness is noted by others (though not to her face).
  • Iron Lady: Remains utterly calm at all times.

Voiced by: Rie Takahashi (Japanese), Morgan Berry (English)

The daughter of Akinori Makino, an officer for the Metropolitan Police's Public Safety Division, and a classmate of Asuka, Kurumi and Sayako, humorously oblivious to the actual work and double lives of her relations.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Abigail slices her arm off in front of Asuka and Kurumi. The latter solves the problem quickly enough that it leaves no lasting damage... physically.
  • Big Eater: She can really pack away the food, and noted that after Sayako's run-in with Kim Kanth, she only had two servings of breakfast due to being so worried.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: The trauma of being tortured by a Magical Girl caused her to lose her ability of reasoning and believed all Magical Girls are evil.
  • Book Dumb: Gets very "tired" after thirty minutes of studying. In fact, she is oblivious to the fact that the Metropolitan Police Department (local police) and the National Police Agency (national anti-crime units) are not the same thing.
  • Break the Cutie: After being kidnapped and tortured by Watchman and Chef, alongside Abigail, a magical girl who works with the mob, she is left with PTSD symptoms and has developed a fear of scissors along with a resentment of magical girls. She also lost the ability to listen to reason as a result, as shown when her father tried to remind her that Rapture and War Nurse saved her from her tormentors, when she reacted with fear to them. It takes Kurumi surgically and magically removing the memories of the past week to fix it.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She loves girls with big boobs (emphasized with additional dialogue in the anime).
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Not shy about admiring girls' bodies and routinely flirts with Asuka, especially in the anime. She's not nearly as aggressive as Kurumi, though.
  • Genki Girl: Very chipper, lively, and outgoing, in contrast of the shy Sayako.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Her father decides that it's best that her memory is erased so she goes back to the way she was the week before her kidnapping and torture.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The lively and headstrong Red Oni to Sayako's shy and rational Blue Oni.
  • Speaking Like Totally Teen: Uses slang like "bangin' hot."
  • Too Dumb to Live: Her kidnapping should come as no surprise given where she was and when. Even in peacetime, any woman with some common sense would already know empty streets at nighttime as home to rapists and other common thugs.

Asuka's former classmate, a shy but nice bookworm.

  • Adaptation Expansion: Her post-traumatic stress from the attack at the start of the series is given more focus in the anime, rather than mostly just being told about by Nozomi.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Her hand is cut off by Asuka in Chapter 61, freeing her from the Sekhmet persona.
  • Back from the Dead: Resurrected by Asuka in the final pages of the story.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: By the Babel Brigade into becoming the magical girl of mass destruction, "Sehkmet".
  • Breath Weapon: As Sekhmet, she can shoot a blast of magic from her mouth.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Has a female variant of this relationship with Asuka. Had it not been for Sayako, Asuka may not have adjusted to the normal way of life as well as she has.
  • Cute Bookworm: Likes books and reading.
  • Foil: To Nozomi; both were involved in a terrorist attack. However, unlike Nozomi, who grew fearful and resentfully Fantastic Racist of Magical Girls due to being tortured by Abigail, even after being saved by Asuka and Kurumi, until she got her memory erased, Sayako didn't lose her faith in them, even after being saved by Asuka, while still being affected by the attack.
  • Magic Staff: Her main weapons as Sehkmet are a magic staff that doubles as a halberd and a scythe.
  • Naked on Revival: She resurrections this way. Justified, as she was just ashes beforehand.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: As Sehkmet, she is dubbed like this, and lives up to the title.
  • Possession Burnout: A variation in that shortly after being released from the power that was Sekhmet, she crumbles to dust. It is unclear if this would have happened without the removal.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The shy and rational Blue Oni to Nozomi's lively and headstrong Red Oni.
  • Reduced to Dust: As implied in Chapter 61 and confirmed in Chapter 62, she did not survive being turned back to a normal person from Sekhmet, her body burned up until she was just ashes. However, she is resurrected in the last pages by Asuka's powers.
  • Shrinking Violet: Very shy and timid in contrast of the lively Nozomi.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: As Sekhmet, she doesn’t even appear to be sentient, but she is by far the strongest magical girl around, annihilating Leyla Basticon with barely any effort, and nearly killing many more people, all while being little more than a maelstrom of power. All things considered, however, she primarily attacks as a refraction to others' attacks.

  • Elites Are More Glamorous: Works for the ISA, a recon division in the American Joint Special Operations Command closely connected to the Army.
  • Those Two Guys: Aside from working closely with Mia, he and Julia aren't really given much characterization.

Magical Operations Response Group (MORG)

    Larry Ironside

Captain Larry Ironside

Voiced by: Naomi Kusumi (Japanese), Ben Phillips (English)

The United States Magical Warfare Response Force commanding officer, he is in charge of MORG, the American equivalent to the Japanese M-Squad.

  • The Captain: His overall rank.
  • Foil: A fair bit more personable than his Japanese counterpart (Iizuka), while also being closer to the military and seemingly always seen in uniform (compared to Iizuka being in a suit).

    Cage

Captain Cage

Voiced by: Reigo Yamaguchi (Japanese), Ray Hurd (English)

Captain of the first squad.

Russia

GRU

    Constantine Asimov

Constantine Asimov

Voiced by: Jun Kasama (Japanese), Patrick McAllister (English)

The only survivor of the GRU unit sent to Mt. Aso three years ago, where he met Iizuka.

  • Code Name: Goes by "Friend", as revealed in Chapter 39.
  • Defector from Decadence: Upon realizing what the Russian military does to Phoenix, he decides that he can't trust his government, and becomes an informant for the Japanese to free her.
  • The Handler: He is the former handler of Tamara.
  • I Have a Family: The reason given for why his behavior as The Informant is meant to remain secret.
  • The Informant: To the M Squad during the Moscow arc, explaining about Tamara's history and how "Sister's Binding" works.
  • Sole Survivor: The sole survivor of the GRU Spetsnaz squad sent to Mt. Aso, where he met Iizuka.

Russian Mafia

    Georgy Yakovlevich Vedernikov

A member of the Russian mafia top brass who meets with Akinori Makino in Moscow to discuss Oboroten'.

  • Affably Evil: He is definitely a mobster, but he is kind to Makino, in part due to him helping with auto smuggling before their talk.
  • Bit Character: Despite giving some exposition, he only appears in Chapter 28 and is more of an information source than a character.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Does not think highly of Oboroten' at all.
Georgy: ... they do outrageous things like selling humans to the otherworld...
  • Evil Old Folks: An aged Russian mafioso.
  • The Mafiya: His organization. And unlike Oboroten', it is not a front.

Russian Army

    Oleysa

Major Oleysa

A military wizard in the employ of the Russian military.

  • Bit Character: Has small parts in two chapters to be characterized before being broken into a plaything for Varvara, and is essentially a nonentity afterwards.
  • Cloth Fu: Her magical tool is the "scarlet wool," which can be used as a whip or even as Razor Floss. Varvara explains what it can do after kidnapping her.
Varvara: It can't be severed by normal means... and if need be, it can chop off both your hands and feet instantly.
  • Dark Mistress: Apparently becomes this to Varvara after the story, if not her second in command.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: As part of her transformation from a proper military woman to Varvara's "meat slave," she has her hair let down from a proper bun.
  • Go-Go Enslavement: As part of being turned into a slave, she has her military uniform (and glasses) traded for a skintight black outfit that covers her torso, while having very deep cleavage. Another outfit is essentially just a button down white shirt that isn't even closed, and apparently no pants. This is only averted in the last chapter, where she is disguised as an ordinary person to escape with her mistress to Mexico on foot.
  • Majorly Awesome: Her rank in the Russian military.
  • Mind Rape: What Varvara does to her, in addition to physical, with her tentacles, themselves rubbed with aphrodisiac. Unlike with Nazani or others, she succeeds, and it is implied this isn’t the first time.
Varvara: This is the result of joining together corpses with my necromancy. Magical living tentacles, for torture use. Soon, Major Oleysa's body won't be able to live without those tentacles. Her life as a human will be over, and what awaits her is being my meat slave.
  • Military Mage: Functions like a magical mercenary (using magic through a tool rather than out of nowhere), but is completely loyal only to the Russian military.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Deconstructed. She only looks this way, complete with sexualized behavior and outfits, after essentially losing her identity and becoming a sex slave.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Appears to be this, not having much of an opinion shown regarding her work as a torturer.
  • The Quiet One: After being thoroughly broken, it is unclear if she even can speak anymore following telling what she knows about "Sister's Binding", only barely saying a word. It is confirmed in the final chapter that she can speak, but chooses not to.
  • Satellite Character: Her characterization is mostly in relationship to others, particularly as Varvara's victim.
  • Sex Slave: Ultimately turned into this by Varvara, waiting on her beck and call on hands and knees, and physically and psychologically addicted to her tentacles.
  • Torture Technician: Is in charge of torturing Tamara.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Doesn't get much room for characterization before being completely broken into someone who is essentially a different person.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: She isn't seen again after Varvara escapes with her in the Moscow arc. Until she is shown to be bringing Varvara's living head to Mexico in the final chapter.

Antagonists

Babel Library/Babel Brigade

    In General
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The prevailing reason why people join is that they were personally helped in some way by the Brigadier at a low point in their lives.
  • Western Terrorists: While they have members from around the world, their leaders come from France.

    Kim Kanth

Kim Kanth

Voiced by: Satoshi Tsuruoka (Japanese), Mike McFarland (English)

A terrorist affiliated with the East Asian United War Front. He nearly kills Sayako while attempting an escape from the Japanese authorities, prompting Asuka's intervention.

  • Alliterative Name: Both his given and surnames start with the same letter in the alphabet.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Asuka cuts his feet off at the ankles, and unlike most other examples in the series, they are not re-attached.
  • Body Horror: The second time he is seen, he appears almost desiccated from the tortures of the NPA.
  • Far East Asian Terrorists: As a member of the East Asian United War Front.
  • Starter Villain: His actions are what get Asuka involved in crime fighting in the series start after trying to stay retired, and also introduces the Babel Brigade.

    'Pick Scissors' Abby

Abigail/Pick Scissors Abby

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c69066a7_5c76_45d2_8678_858aeecb1661.png

Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki (Japanese), Tia Ballard (English)

A scissor wielding magical girl from England who is an expert in torture and Netherbeasts weapons dealing. She has a direct and more...intimate relationship with the one behind the scenes of the latest terrorist attacks.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Anymore, anyway. In Chapter 62, being tortured repeatedly by Kurumi has left her begging for it to stop, to no avail.
    Abigail: Stop! No more drugs!
  • Ax-Crazy: From her casual torture to her terrifying mood-swinging, she is definitely not sane.
  • Bifurcated Weapon: Her weapon can split into two blades for Dual Wielding.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: Ultimately, this is Kurumi's plan for her; to torture her until her "bad heart disappears." She is utterly terrified of her for it.
  • Break the Haughty: By the final chapter, being kept in Kurumi's care has turned her from murderously angry to begging for it all to stop.
  • Cleavage Window: Her magical girl outfit comes with one of these.
  • The Dragon: To Brigadier.
  • Enfante Terrible: She killed three people as a young girl before being arrested.
  • Evil Brit: Her nationality isn’t emphasized, but she does hail from England.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Kurumi, who is also Torture Technician and Psycho Lesbian with a specific love interest. Fittingly, they face off more than once.
Kurumi: If... it's for the person I cherish most... I'm willing to risk my life!
Abigail: For the person you cherish most, huh...
That goes double for me, you idiot!''
  • Evil Orphan: After her parents died, she resorted to murder until she was picked up by Brigadier, who made her much worse.
  • Fingore: Is subject to this in her first battle with Asuka and Kurumi, by having them cut off while trying to defend against Asuka's karambit. She gets new fingers from her Queen afterward, made from Netherbeast flesh.
  • Freudian Excuse: The human military's bomb killed her parents three years ago, so she wants humanity to pay for not taking responsibility for the loss of life on their side. She joined Brigadier because she promised that Abigail would be "compensated" for the losses.
Abigail: My parents died in the war! How else am I going to survive!? And it wasn't the monster that killed them! They were hit by a bomb! It was friendly fire! The government should take responsibility! Give me back my parents!
  • The Immodest Orgasm: She's anything but quiet whenever she and Brigadier make love.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Her mouth is quite filthy. For example, her response to being impaled in Chapter 6, once she can speak again.
Abigail: Motherfuckers! God fucking damn it! Piece of shit!
  • Mask of Sanity: Attempts one... very poorly. She tries to remain stable, but anything not going her way drives her to borderline snarling rage.
  • Mood-Swinger: When she first meets Rapture and War Nurse, she goes from casual sadism to calmly removing a needle from her neck to screaming fury and back in an instant. This continues on into the rest of her appearances, shifting from highly emotional to calm.
  • Psycho Lesbian: Is madly in love with her boss, the Queen, and she's a total psycho.
  • Sadist: She enjoys causing as much pain as possible.
  • Shear Menace: Her main weapon is a pair scissors, befitting her codename.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Her reaction to Kurumi talking about how there were eleven first generation magical girls, not five, and that the six who died should be the ones remembered.
    Abigail: You're so annoying, bitch!
  • Strapped to an Operating Table: Her last seen position is this being tortured seemingly endlessly by Kurumi.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Seems to have these when things don’t go her way, losing what fragile hold on sanity she attempts. This is especially evident around Kurumi, who had impaled her. There are two key examples:
    • In Chapters 6, she descends from calm sadism to rage after Kurumi shoots her in the throat, only barely pulling back from actually killing her. She keeps this attitude, only barely in check, through to Chapter 9.
    • In Chapter 54, she silently panics when she is paralyzed by Kurumi, who says she isn't going to kill her, but make her atone for her sins. When she is last seen in Chapter 62, she has been reduced to begging.

    Giess

Giess

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5ac19e8f_188a_4f1f_a593_fc4665fb29e4.jpeg

Voiced by: Yuka Terasaki (Japanese), Mikaela Krantz (English)

A Somalian former child soldier who was nearly killed before being rescued by the Babel Brigade. Now a powerful cyborg, he is determined to fulfill his savior's desires of a more terrible war.

  • Achilles' Heel: He's durable enough to tank any attack General Tabira and Asuka throw at him, but he can be weakened by destroying his liquid magic tank on his lower left back.
  • Affably Evil: While he is one of the Babel Brigade and remorseless mass murderer, Giess is genuinely supportive of Chisato and respects Asuka's answer to his assertion about magical girls not being saviors with no belittlement, even thanking her that they had a chance to talk. Overall, he came across as one of the nicer members personality wise.
  • African Terrorists: He works with the Babel Brigade and hails from Somalia.
  • Anti-Magic: Appears to be built in this vein, with techniques specifically for shutting down magic users and extreme durability against magical attacks... barring his Achilles' Heel.
  • Bald of Evil: His real head is bald.
  • Becoming the Mask: He befriended Chisato in order to manipulate her into becoming an evil Magical Girl, but he uses his dying breath to apologize to her and to tell her to forget about the brigade.
  • Body Horror: The only parts of his body remaining are his head, upper torso, and one arm. Everything below his rib cage is gone.
  • Broken Pedestal: He used to be a Hero-Worshipper of magical girls until he realized they didn't actually solve the problems of the world.
Giess: Back when I was just a normal kid... I loved watching reports about the magical girls fighting the Disas. I thought the world would change. But I was wrong. Even if magical girls defeat all those monsters, the world's still full of them.
  • Child Soldiers: He was forcefully recruited by Somali guerrillas, after they destroyed his village. He was trained by them, used in combat, and then left to die.
  • The Corrupter: He kidnaps the people who caused Chisato's accident and tells her to kill them slowly and painfully, since he needs her to prove her ruthlessness. Downplayed in that she complies without hesitation. It turns out he himself was responsible for making them crash into Chisato.
Giess: Chisato. Kill these four people. And no transforming. You must kill them by your own hand, with that knife. And you need to spend more than ten minutes killing each one. Don't stab them in any vital areas. Just cut out their throats at the very end. Chisato, if you can't become heartless... you'll fail as a magical girl.
  • Cyborg: He looks like a burly robot, but he states that he still has some biological parts left.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Giess was forced by Somali guerrillas to kill his parents and rape his sister just to survive.
  • Facepalm of Doom: How he kills Chisato's father.
  • Hero Killer: His tactical experience as a guerrilla fighter in Somalia was put to use in the Naha arc, wiping out scores of police officers and JGSDF soldiers in the surprise attack.
  • Mage Killer: He is deliberately designed to fight magic users, and calls himself an "Anti-Magical Girl Weapon."
  • Magitek: He is a cyborg with magically produced parts, powered by a liquid magic tank. Or, as Tabira calls him, a "magically mechanized soldier."
  • Rape by Proxy: He mentions the guerrillas that destroyed his village forced him to assault his own sister at gunpoint.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Was forced to kill his parents with his own two hands to survive an attack by Somalian guerrilla fighters.
  • Super-Strength: He is about as inhumanly strong as he looks, given his armor.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He used to look up to magical girls and thought they could change the world, but became cynical when his home was ravaged by war in spite of the Netherbeasts' defeat. This is emphasized by how during his Motive Rant to Asuka, he is drawn as he was as a little boy.
  • Villain Respect: Appears to have genuine respect for Asuka's combat skill.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Subverted. This hulking behemoth speaks with a child's voice, but when he's finally defeated, his true form is shown and it is indeed a suitable voice for it.
  • Younger Than They Look: It's hard to tell from his cyborg body, but he's a Child Soldier and is actually younger than Chisato. Though the anime makes his age more obvious because of his voice.

    Kilgee

Kilgee

Voiced by: Shiori Izawa (Japanese), Apphia Yu (English)

A penguin-like fairy aiding the Babel Brigade.

  • Evil Counterpart: To Sacchu, though much more proactive in terms of planning.
  • Cute But Psycho: Looks like a tiny critter akin to Sacchu, but is very interested in torment.
  • Toothy Bird: Justified as it isn’t actually a bird, but it has rows of razor sharp teeth inside of that beak.
  • Verbal Tic: Kilgee says "Gi".

    Blanka

Blanka/Vincent

A soldier who claims to be working for the Brigadier out of love. Which is to say familial love, as he is Brigadier's father, Vincent, a former member of the French military.

  • Achilles' Heel: While he can block magic, non-magical attacks can cut through his armor.
  • Action Dad: He was part of the French military, and Francine's father.
  • Affably Evil: In a different way from Giess. He is willing to have a casual conversation with Mia, and overall doesn't truly seem to care about the Babel Brigade's goals beyond helping his daughter, but he is still unrelenting, though willing to be completely honest about everything he says.
  • Anti-Magic: His armor is completely immune to magic, in exchange for sacrificing what magical ability he could have. This enables him to fight magical girls on roughly even footing.
  • Boom, Headshot!: How he died in Chapter 61, self-inflicted to the right side of his head with a pistol.
  • Broken Faceplate: His mask is shattered by a punch from Mia in Chapter 53, letting her figure out exactly who Brigadier actually is.
  • Cold Sniper: His modus operandi.
  • Driven to Suicide: In Chapter 61, having seen Francine die, he shoots himself in the head, seeing no reason for him to be alive anymore.
  • Dying Alone: He casually kills himself after Francine dies, the scene is framed that he is the only person nearby, with it unknown if anyone else around even knew or cared.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He became a terrorist out of his love for his daughter.
  • Evil Counterpart: As a loved one of Francine and a former soldier who uses gunplay, he serves as one to Mia Cyrus, who deliberately seeks him out after their first fight.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Seeing Francine dead, but at peace, he casually notes that he has no other reason to live, and kills himself calmly.
Blanka: The least that can be said is that my daughter died peacefully. Now there's no reason why I'm alive.
  • From Camouflage to Criminal: A former soldier turned terrorist.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Fatherly love, anyway.
Blanka: ... I will do anything... if it's for your sake. Even if I have to set the world on fire.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: Wears a black-and-white mask when in combat.
  • Mole in Charge: A throwaway line in Chapter 47 notes he is the White House Chief of Staff and Director of the NSA. Played with as he isn't directly in charge of MORG.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Survives past his daughter's death, though not for long.
  • Secret-Keeper: An Implied Trope, regarding Francine's relationship with Mia.
  • Smoke Out: Has smoke grenades to cover his escape if needed.
  • Sociopathic Soldier: Comes from the French military, and is an unrepentant terrorist.
  • The Stoic: Rarely changes his tone or even facial expression at all. Even seeing his daughter die, he is calm as he kills himself, at least outwardly.
  • Super-Strength: As he cannot use magic with his enhancements, he instead has outfitted himself with advanced technology to make himself stronger than a normal human.
  • The Team Normal: He is armed with magical equipment, but unlike his cohorts, who each are some level of supernatural, he is a normal human.
  • Undying Loyalty: To his daughter.

    Leyla Basticon

Commander Leyla Basticon

A member of the Babel Brigade. Actually the ex-commander of the Distonian Army Dimensional Dragoon Corps.

  • And This Is for...: Says something to this effect to Asuka, who isn't having it.
Leyla: This is revenge for all of my subordinates that you killed.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Appears as early as Chapter 13, but just as another member of the Babel Brigade, but never sees the magical girls in the field. This is because she is a Distonian leader, and so may have been recognized.
  • Commanding Coolness: She's actually an ex-commander, and very capable in combat.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Being blindsided by Peipei and Kurumi during her duel with Asuka catches her off guard.
  • Draconic Humanoid: Her basic true appearance as a mostly human-looking Distonian, looking the part with horns, fangs, dragonlike wings, and a tail.
  • Dragon Knight: Looks the part with her horns and wings, and was the leader of the Dragoon Corps.
  • Evil Counterpart: It takes until nearly the end of the run, but she proves herself to be this to Asuka. Her combat style is similar, down to having her own Magic Calorie Roll-Up, Tornado Scythe, which functions similarly to Rapture Talon, and she is a (former) leader of Asuka's old enemies.
  • Fangs Are Evil: They are hard to notice, but she has fangs in her transformed state.
  • Horned Humanoid: Shows herself to be one when she "lets loose" her true power in Chapter 51. Unlike with magical girls, hers seem to be real.
  • Playing the Victim Card: Asuka calls her on this for her justifications.
Asuka: Never thought I'd see the day a Distonian playing the victim!
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: She doesn’t know much about pop culture, which is played for some laughs in the midst of carnage.
Leyla: It's been almost four years since Distonia's defeat... Do we get to win this time?
Abby: ... that's from "Rambo", right?
    Leyla: What's "Rambo"?
  • Sinister Scythe: Her primary weapon.
  • The Stoic: Shows next to no emotion for most of the run. She abandons this during her battle with Asuka, and dies before she can return it.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Brigadier never intended to actually bring back the Disas Beast, but rather to use his power for her own ends, something she only learns after it has been defeated again.
  • Villainous Breakdown: She devolves into murderous rage when Brigadier reveals that she was playing everyone, including the Distonians, to make a Person of Mass Destruction from the remains of the Disas Beast, rather than resurrecting it as the primary goal. The latter drives her to try to kill Brigadier.
Leyla Bastion: What is the meaning of this...?
Brigadier: Ahh. I never told you the entire plan, did I? The revival of the Disas Beast was just the opening act. My real objective was to create her. Citizens from Distonia, thank you for all your hard work!
Leyla Basticon: You've got to be joking!
  • Winged Humanoid: Lets out dark, dragonlike wings in Chapter 51.

    Shao Myao

Shao Myao

A Chinese magical mercenary who wields a magical violin.

  • Enfante Terrible: She is definitely a child, but indulges in mind control and murder.
  • Far East Asian Terrorists: A member of the Babel Brigade who appears to hail from China.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Her death is not actually shown, but the method is obvious.
  • Oh, Crap!: She is shocked and horrified when Jade just slaughters her human shields and reaches her instead of falling for her attempt to appeal to her heroism, up until she dies.
  • Magic Music: Uses this to mind control others into protecting her or attacking others. However, it only works on those without magic, and anyone else finds it terrible.
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: Essentially how her magic works.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her one color image shows she has red eyes.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: She is a child, but she happily engages in murder and terrorism.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Comes with how she appears first in Chapter 48, and is only ever seen in battle, but nothing is really known about her aside from her name, powers, and some of her personality. Even that is more than her partner, a man with blonde hair who can make golems, but isn't even named.
  • Your Head Asplode: Courtesy of Jade's hammer.

Oboroten'

    In General
A faction of the Russian Mafia, and an early threat to M-Squad. In truth, they are actually a detachment of the Babel Brigade posing as the Russian Mafia.
  • False Flag Operation: They actually are not part of the Russian Mafia at all, but are acting as it to further the interests of the Babel Brigade.
  • The Mafiya: Their bread and butter. It's a front.
  • Renegade Splinter Faction: The Don of the Russian Mafia doesn’t approve of what they do. Subverted; they were never part of the mafia to begin with.
  • The Usual Adversaries: They pop up every so often, but are, while dangerous, not nearly as much as the Babel Brigade.
  • Western Terrorists: What they actually are, as a group from the Babel Brigade.

    Storozh and Povar

Storozh (Watchman) and Povar (Chef)

Storozh voiced by: Toshitsuga Takashina (Japanese), Cris George (English)
Povar voiced by: Yoshikazu Nagano (Japanese), J. Michael Tatum (English)

A pair of twin sorcerers who kidnap Nozomi on orders from Abigail.

  • The Dividual: They are, while not completely interchangeable, more or less a single unit.
  • Making a Splash: They summon Rusalkas out of water to attack or water board.
  • Starter Villain: A different type than Kim Kansu. Facing them is what leads Asuka to join the special forces.
  • The Stoic: Though not completely emotionless, they are still rather intensely calm.
  • Torture Technician: They help Abigail to torture Nozomi.

    Kasyanov

Kasyanov

Voiced by: Hiromichi Tezuka (Japanese), Ian Sinclair (English)

A leader in the Russian Mafia.

  • Emergency Transformation: After Kasyanov is cornered by Tamara, he stabs himself in the chest with a Disas magical knife and transforms into a bear to attack her, but still gets his ass kicked.
  • Exit Villain, Stage Left: Attempts to escape this way when Nazani is captured, but is found and killed by Tamara. The fact that he abandoned Nazani is a minor plot point later.
  • One-Winged Angel: Attempts this, using a netherworld transformation artifact to turn himself into a werebear. It doesn't help.
  • Villain of the Week: Only appears in chapter 12.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When he is found by Tamara, he flies into a rage and induces an apparently permanent transformation.
Kasyanov: Fuck you! (stabs himself with a transformation artifact and changes into a werebear) You've made me use my last resort... Now I can't go back to being human!
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: After the Russian mafioso Kasyanov got away from an M-Squad raid using an Disas teleportation pill, he had to vomit because teleportation takes a toll on humans even if it goes well (according to the mafioso it could've "liquefied his organs" if it went wrong).

    Nazani

Nazani

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/202e0b22_e96c_4d85_aeb5_c36f70a87698.jpeg

Voiced by: Shizuka Ishigami (Japanese), Sarah Wiedenheft (English)

An Armenian black magic mercenary who worked for Oboroten before being defeated by Asuka. After her defeat, she was recruited into M-Squad as a support member.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Gets her arm cut off by Asuka when they first fight. It is repaired afterwards by Kurumi.
  • Break the Cutie: Surprisingly, not the tortures, but rather learning that her work to help her mother was for naught, and said mother didn't even care about her.
  • Butt-Monkey: She is always subjected to torture by various characters ranging from Kurumi to Varvara. The former is for comedy... the latter not so much.
  • Cute Witch: Despite suffering through a Trauma Conga Line, her looks are quite adorable. Kasyanov even calls her a "cute little witch."
  • Defeat Means Friendship: More like defeated means getting tortured and injected with a serum that makes her obey her master's wishes.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Seems to hold her mother in high regard, and her well-being is why she works for Oboroten' in the first place. However, this becomes tragic when it is revealed the love is not reciprocated.
  • Family of Choice: Declares the Legendary Five and the NPA this after learning the truth about her mother.
Nazani: My family now... are the people here.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Sports a pair of shoulder-length twintails supported by a pair of purple ribbons.
  • Happiness in Slavery: She seems to enjoy the role of being a BDSM pet, and claims to be better off after having received punishment for her actions prior to it. It becomes less like this when she’s given her freedom and learns her origins.
Nazani: Don't you think... no matter the outcome, the most important thing is staying alive? Although I ended up like this... it's because this is my punishment for doing bad things... And besides, I’m more at ease now than when I was with the criminal organization.
  • Human Pet: Turned into this through torture by Kurumi, to the point of acting like a dog. She keeps it up after being transferred to Miura's command.
  • I Want My Mommy!: Cries out for her mommy when Asuka cuts off her arm. Asuka objects to that.
Asuka: "Mommy", you say...? After you killed all of those policemen?
  • Magic Wand: Her weapon is a minor arcana wand that lets her fire off fireballs.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mother sold her to Oboroten' for money that she spent on drugs, and became a drug dealer. However, she became hooked on drugs herself, resulting in her becoming homeless and becoming a beggar on a street corner. On realizing that she was sold to human traffickers for drug money rather than to help support a new pregnancy, coupled with said mother not even seeming to recognize her, Nazani abandons her to her fate and tells Toda that her mother was dead, and the woman on the street was just a stranger.
  • Playful Cat Smile: Is prone to this whenever she's acting cheerful or affectionate.
  • Playing with Fire: Her magical item is a wand capable of throwing fireballs at her enemies.
  • Superhuman Trafficking: Was a victim of this trope, being one of many girls abducted by traffickers for their magic potential and later became an instrument for the Babel Brigade.
  • Token Mini-Moe: To the whole cast.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In the "save Phoenix" arc, she shows herself to be much more than a broken girl. She tricks Natsagdorj into punching her until she can spit out her tooth for a transmission, withstands Varvara's torture that broke Major Oleysa, and generally shows she is rather capable as an operative, her difficulties with spy work notwithstanding.
  • Torture Is Ineffective: Double subverted. The effects of Varvara's tentacle hentai and aphrodisiac torture on Nazani are temporary and far less effective against her, as opposed to Major Oleysa, who was utterly mindbroken and became a pleasure slave. That's because Nazani's already had worse "pleasure torture" from Kurumi's injections.
  • Trauma Conga Line: She already had a troubled childhood. After being defeated by Asuka she was interrogated and tortured by Kurumi, injected her with a serum that makes her obey Kurumi's wishes or suffer from extremely enhanced senses combined with torture, and after some time out of the field, subjected to a tentacle-based torture by Varvara.
  • You're Not My Father: Said indirectly in Chapter 43 when she learns the truth of how her mother ultimately cared more about drugs than her or her family.
Nazani: My mother is already dead... The person back there was just a stranger...

    Varvara

Varvara the Necromancer

A necromancer working with the mafia as a mercenary, and one of the executives in Oboroten'.

  • The Baroness: Acts as the Sexpot variety.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She joined Brigadier because she offered to bring her dead cat Senpai back to life.
  • Brains and Brawn: The brains to Natsagdorj's brawn.
  • Combat Tentacles: Her primary direct combat spell lets her extend this from her arm (replacing it for a short time until they fall off) using ones she has rubbed with an aphrodisiac, though she tends to use it for other means.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: Of Kuroko Koumori, having her signature Slasher Smile, boobs, and personality, but lacking her redeeming qualities.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She has been researching necromancy to resurrect her dead cat for real.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While heroines are often angry with their villains, Varvara is one who actually disgusts them with her behavior and her personality.
  • Evil Sorcerer: The most prominent (consistently) malevolent magical mercenary in the story.
  • Evil Wears Black: Wears a black, skintight outfit.
  • Eviler than Thou: When she comes to kidnap Tamara, she is already being tortured and brainwashed by her handlers, a group that M-Squad is planning to attack. When one of those handlers, a torturer known as Major Oleysa, comes to fight, she shows herself to be far worse by stealing away the major and Tamara, and breaking her mind to the point that she is barely a person.
  • Exit Villain, Stage Left: How she survives her two major defeats, though the second time she requires help.
  • Flesh Golem: Makes use of these as well as standard necromancy, from a mass of tentacles firmed from multiple corpses to her trump card: the living dead weapon, "the modern Prometheus".
Varvara: This work of art is an amalgamation of the best parts taken from magical mercenaries and Disas!
  • Flunky Boss: What she essentially is, due to combining summoning undead or otherwise eldritch beings of death with her own more direct magic.
  • Karma Houdini: Apparently survives and escapes the battle in New York, hidden as little more than a head in a bag by Oleysa, making their way to Mexico.
  • Large Ham: She is very enthusiastic in combat, especially toward the end.
  • Losing Your Head: Survives decapitation, enabling her to escape major consequences by the end of the story.
  • Love Potion: Makes use of aphrodisiacs in combination with her tentacles.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: Even aside from her tentacles, she can use similar appendages to stay alive when reduced to nothing more than a head.
  • Mad Artist: Views her creations of flesh as "art." Nobody else agrees.
Nazani: How in the world is that art?!
Varvara: Once a philistine, always a philistine.
  • Magic Staff: Her magical tool is a staff topped with a skull, itself wearing a crown.
  • Necromancer: Her specialty is in the creation of Voodoo Zombies, though she can also manipulate corpses to speak on her behalf. In fact, she is called "Varvara the Necromancer" for this reason.
  • People Puppets: Able to do this, but seemingly only for corpses.
  • Perverse Sexual Lust: Has a rather disturbing habit of sexual sadism, and is rather open about it.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Played for Drama. She combines tentacles with aphrodisiacs often, and her attitude around women she fights, as well as her proclivity to "play with" Major Oleysa in plain view of her fellow officers shows that she is extremely perverted, to the point that she is outright called a pervert more than once by heroines.
  • Psycho Lesbian: She tries to brainwash women into being her pleasure slaves (whom she doesn't even think of as human beings) through torture and aphrodisiacs, succeeding on Major Oleysa and momentarily doing so with 'Unicorn' Claire. She also tries forcing women to strip for her pleasure, even in the midst of battle. Unlike Abigail or Kurumi, it is only disturbing, and not a source of love but rather likely temporary satisfaction, and therefore is shown to be more horrible than either of them.
  • Scary Teeth: Her teeth are all razor sharp.
  • Slasher Smile: She has a big and nasty grin full of sharp teeth.
  • Sole Survivor: Due to running away once Natsagdorj was deemed defeated, she is the only known survivor of the Oboroten' executives after the "save Tamara" arc, barring bringing Oleysa along. Unless one counts Oleysa herself, she also appears to be this to the Babel Brigade in the finale.
  • Spy Catsuit: Wears a black one.
  • Torture Technician: Makes a habit of it, torturing people to break them.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: A disturbing take on this with Chisato.
Varvara: She's just my type... I'll drag her down to a pleasurable hell with my slimy tentacles.
  • Voodoo Zombie: Varvara specializes in, among other things, turning people into classic zombies: Corpses under the control of a necromancer (she even adopted the moniker "Varvara the Necromancer").
  • Wicked Cultured: Reads Frankenstein, which gives her the idea to make a similar creature of her own for her final battle with Chisato and Nazani.
Varvara: Are there any historical figures you two would like to fuck? For me, it would be Mary Shelley by a long shot. Her book, "Frankenstein", is like my bible.

    Natsagdorj

Natsagdorj

A magical mercenary in the employ of Oboroten'.

  • Brains and Brawn: The brawn to Varvara's brains.
  • The Brute: His magic style focuses on getting up close, and he is very large and muscular.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Unusually for non-magical girl magic users, he focuses on being as close as possible.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Is taken out when Chisato elbows him in the back of the head during a charge, a usually illegal move in karate.
  • Mana Drain: His specialty. He has a magical artifact implanted inside of his body that allows him to drain the magic of others on contact.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He initially looks down on Nazani because she is a little girl.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Savagely beats Nazani when she insults him after capture.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: Chisato identifies his style as a mixture of wrestling and Mongolian sumo.

    Lavrov

Lavrov

One of the executives in charge of Oboroten'.

  • Boom, Headshot!: Shot in the head by Toda in Chapter 40.
  • The Don: As an executive first, and not a magical mercenary, he fills this position by default.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He is rather personable with Nazani, but makes no bones about his goal of kidnapping Tamara, and has practically no reaction at all when Varvara takes Nazani to be tortured.
  • Knew It All Along: It is unclear when he figured it out, but he was aware that Nazani was acting too suspiciously.
  • The Sociopath: Has superficial charm, and is elated (in his own calm way) by the idea of a full-scale terrorist attack on Moscow.
Lavrov: We'll turn that magical girl into a puppet... and use her to exact a large-scale terrorist attack on Moscow. The city will turn into a sea of flames... I'm getting excited.
  • The Team Normal: The only one of the Oboroten' executives with no magical powers.

Ghost Mask

    Aikawa Ryuuei

Aikawa Ryuuei

A former professional kickboxer who allied with the Disas through Ghost Mask during the war in order to treat his colon cancer.

  • Bioaugmentation: He has significant Disas muscle transplants across his body that allow him to sense magic and use it himself.
  • Boxing Battler: Specifically, kickboxing. He has three titles in the sport, as well as the Muai Thai belt from Thailand.
  • Far East Asian Terrorists: Given his affiliation with the East Asian United War Front.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: He is capable with magic through his Disas implants, and fights with kickboxing.
  • Les Collaborateurs: As a member of Ghost Mask, he is part of an organization that sided with the Disas in exchange for power.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: He can sense magic.
  • Shadow Archetype: For Chisato, as she herself recognizes.
Chisato: As a fellow martial artist, I can kind of understand how you feel... My leg was gifted to me, you see.
  • The Topic of Cancer: His cancer is why he joined the Disas.
  • Villain of the Week: Only appears in the special issue "Black Belt."
  • What the Hell Are You?: Angrily asks this of Chisato as she beats him up.
  • Your Head Asplode: Chisato stomps on his face hard enough to obliterate his head.

As a fairy

Voiced by: Sayaka Ohara (Japanese), Stephanie Young (English)

A general of the Spirit World's army, and the chief benefactor of the magical girls. She is a capable warrior who helped foster a productive relationship between her world and humanity, but her overly-affectionate personality can be off-putting.

  • Comic Relief: She gives some of the most comedic scenes when she's around for a rather mostly serious anime.
  • Cuddle Bug: She's very affectionate towards the Magical Five and likes to hug them, to a suffocating degree.
  • Cuteness Proximity: After she had to transform into a little fairy to recover, several people such as Tamara and especially Kaede were totally smitten by her new cuteness.
  • Four-Star Badass: She's the general of Meripiko, a Spirit World nation, and is capable of fighting.
  • Genki Girl: She's very easily excitable and playful.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: She's very lustful, enjoys sexual activity, and is an all-around sweetheart.
  • Marshmallow Hell: She does this to Asuka when she meets the magical girls in Naha. It's one of the reasons why Asuka was reluctant to see her again.
  • Nice Girl: Despite her perverted streak, she's one of the kindest and sweetest characters in the show.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: After being injured by Giess, she takes the form of a small fairy to recover her strength.
  • Statuesque Stunner: In her humanoid form, she towers over most human males.
  • Womanchild: To a degree, she acts very child-like, but still has the mind of an adult, though her heart remains youthful.

    Kenjou

Kenjou

Voiced by: Yuuya Murakami (Japanese), Dallas Reid (English)

A Wolf-like Fairy in charge of protecting General Tabira.

  • Informed Ability: He us stated to be a dangerous combatant, but in his one fight, he easily is defeated by Giess.
  • The Worf Effect: He's easily killed by Giess, just to show how dangerous he is with his enhanced armor.
  • Your Head Asplode: Giess destroys his head.

    Kataru and Ryuki

Kataru and Ryuki

Kataru voiced by: Teppei Uenishi (Japanese), Shawn Gann (English)
Ryuki voiced by: Shou Karino (Japanese), Justin Briner (English)

Two cat-type fairies. Kataru is the Assistant Fairy in Charge of Spells, and Ryuki is the Assistant Fairy in Charge of Policies.

  • Animal Jingoism: As Kenjou explains, cat-type and mouse-type fairies do not get along, as shown by the hostility between them and Sacchu (until he proves himself with a handgun).
  • Bit Character: They don't get much characterization.
  • Verbal Tic: -taru.

Other Humans

    Professor Greenburg

Professor Leonid Greenburg

Voiced by: Atsuyoshi Miyazaki (Japanese), Kent Williams (English)

A Jewish-American mathematician found nearly dead by Mia Cyrus and the ISA during a raid on a Mexican drug cartel. He is a specialist in topology and numerology.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: He only appears alive, and dies, in chapter 3. However, the numbers he was spouting in his last words were calculations, ones that Brigadier had used to figure out the right timing and location for a ritual to bring back the Disas Beast in New York.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Heavily implied to be the reason for his state.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: His body is compressed into a small cube while still alive, until he dies from the compression.
  • Good with Numbers: He is a gold medalist in an international mathematics championship.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He is only alive for five pages of Chapter 3, but his involvement both drives the United States (particularly Mia Cyrus) into the conflict with the Babel Brigade and allows for the return of the Disas Beast due to his calculations.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: The reason for his death.
