Beware of Unmarked Spoilers.

This is the Characters page for The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess. Please be aware that there are several Walking Spoiler characters who are very difficult to discuss at length without revealing vital plot points.

The Main Duo

    Apply to Both
  • Action Girl: Anis is a Gold-ranked adventurer with incredible fighting experience and an arsenal of Magitek equipment who later also becomes part-dragon, while Euphyllia is also a proficient swordswoman and one of the most powerful magic casters known in the kingdom especially once she becomes a Spirit Contractor. It's only natural that together, both are capable of great feats, especially when they worked together during the dragon battle.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Both prefer referring to each other by their nicknames rather than their full name.
  • Bathtub Bonding: They engage in this together after they become a couple.
  • Common Law Marriage: After Euphyllia is adopted by the royal family and becomes queen, Anis is her consort in all but name since same-sex marriage hasn't been legalized by the kingdom yet.
  • Everyone Can See It: By the events of Volume 03, Laine, Tilty, and other characters can clearly see that the relationship between Anis and Euphie as developed well passed the point of friendship or being Master/Assistant.
  • Interspecies Romance: With Euphyllia becoming a Spirit Contractor, they are engaging in this type of relationship.
  • Masculine–Feminine Gay Couple: Anis is a brash Tomboy Princess who would much rather spend time adventuring and researching in her workshop than spare the time for court functions. Meanwhile, Euphie is a refined and elegant noblewoman who was trained to be the future queen consort for Algard and carries herself with the same manners and grace expected of the nobility.
  • A Match Made in Stockholm: When Algard broke off his engagement to Euphyllia and falsely accussed her of bullying Lainie in public, Anis crashed into the room by accident. After getting a hold of the situation, Anis kidnaps Euphyllia, carries her away in her Flying Broomstick, and asks both of their fathers to let her have Euphyllia as her personal assistant. They soon fall in love and become a couple.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: Due to Euphyllia effectively becoming more or less immortal, she will remain youthful while Anisphia will get older. Anis intends to defy this by finding a way to either shed Euphyllia's immortality or become immortal herself.
  • Official Couple: They officially get together at the end of Volume 03.
  • Queer Establishing Moment:
    • Anis came out of the closet when she was a child.
    • Euphie's feelings develop over the course of the first three volumes until she actually confesses her feelings outright.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Anis is the passionate, excitable Red Oni to Euphie's calmer, logical Blue Oni.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Euphyllia takes the initiative to upgrade their relationship after Anis reveal the true nature of having memories of a previous life.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Both Anis and Euphie are generally good looking in their normal outfits, but when they wear fancy dresses at a party, they really showcase a regal elegance.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Anisphia and Euphyllia have only ever fallen in love with each other.
    • While it is established early on that Anisphia is attracted to women, it appears to only be at surface level. Euphyllia is the only one Anisphia truly had any feelings for.
    • Even though Euphyllia was engaged to Algard, she didn't have any romantic feelings for him and only wished to keep things up for political reasons. It was only after her time with Anisphia that Euphyllia began to develop feelings for her and did things for her that she never did for Algard.
  • Swapped Roles: At the beginning of the story, Anis was the one who was the flirty tease and made her attraction to Euphie clear while Euphie was shy and borderline uncomfortable to the point that Anis had to promise that she wouldn't do anything she didn't want her to. Fast forward to Volume 3 and beyond. Euphie proved to fall for Anis even harder when she is the one that is the more 'open' in their relationship, and Anis is the one that is shy.

    Anisphia "Anis" Wynn Palettia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anisphia_anime_design.png
The Reincarnated Princess

Voiced by: Sayaka Senbongi

The oldest child of the Palettia family and an incredibly eccentric genius who made up for her inability to use magic by developing "Magicology", a form of Magitek that would allow anyone to replicate magic. Unbekownst to anyone but herself, the principles of Magicology and her obsession with magic stem from her secretly regaining the memories of her past life when she was a child.

  • Amusing Injuries: The anime shows her attempts at flying. The first attempt leaves her lying on the ground with blood pouring from her head while the second leaves her physically imprinted in a brick wall. She's no worse for wear in the present.
  • Asleep for Days: After the battle against the dragon, Anis sleeps for three entire days.
  • Baby Factory: Following Algard's exile, the nobles intended to use Anis to give birth to royal successors that would be able to use magic, but Euphie's decision to become a Spirit Contractor prevented this.
  • The Berserker: Downplayed, but she becomes this when taking her magicite medicine, just like the real life berserkers that serve as inspiration, she becomes hyper-agressive and loses her sense of reason as well as having an some addictive qualities. Although, she doesn't lose it completely and is only a threat to her enemies, still being able to tell friend from foe.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She's a Tomboy Princess and high-ranking adventurer with short hair.
  • Breath Weapon: By focusing the power from her Impressed Seal into her mouth, Anis is capable of replicating a dragon's breath attack in the form of a wide shockwave.
  • Broken Ace: A brilliant if somewhat eccentric inventor and one of the best adventurers in the kingdom, Anis nevertheless also has a lot of personal insecurities over being the black sheep of the royal family due to being unable to use magic, as well as struggling with Impostor Syndrome over whether her reincarnating “killed” the original Anisphia.
  • Cain and Abel: She's the Abel to her brother Algard's Cain, wanting to revolutionize the kingdom through peaceful means, while Algard becomes a tyrant she has to defeat.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Zig-zagged. At first, Anis acts rather flirty towards Euphie and 'helps' her take off her dress on their very first night together. Afterwards, she is shown to be more respectful of Euphie's boundaries, and when Euphie ends up becoming the one to pursue a relationship with her, she is the one that becomes shy and bashful over the new situation.
  • Closet Key: She is this to Euphyllia. Euphie was originally engaged to Anis's brother, but she didn't actually love him, only being willing to marry him for her family's sake. It wasn't until she spent time with Anis that she began to realize how she really felt.
  • Cross Attack: Her weapon is a dagger shaped like a cross that turns into a Laser Blade made of mana.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Anis is widely known throughout the kingdom as an eccentric, and she can be rather goofy most of the time. She's also a high-ranked adventurer who regularly defeats swarms of invading monsters with her Magitek inventions.
  • Cursed with Awesome: After defeating a dragon, one of the most powerful beings in the setting, the beast uses the last of its power to "curse" Anis with magical knowledge, Anis herself questions if she had actually been cursed as using the knowledge the dragon gave her she is finally able to use magic.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Unlocking the limiters on her Mana Blades give them enough power to counter a full-power attack from a dragon, but can shatter the blade and strain her enough to make her start coughing up blood.
  • Death of Personality: Before Euphie told her differently, Anis believed that remembering her previous life resulted in the original Anis being erased.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Due to being an out of closet lesbian and extremely eccentric, Anis never expected Euphie to actually pursue her romantically, especially when she was initially uncomfortable or nervous around Anis at the beginning before getting used to her. When Euphie kissed her, Anis had a hard time believing Euphie actually loved her romantically until Euphie made it clear to her without any ambiguity.
  • The Dragonslayer: With Euphyllia's support, Anis manages to slay a dragon, known as the most powerful magical monster of all. The downside is that she gets cursed by the dragon.
  • Dual Wielding: She's fully capable of dual wielding two Mana Blades while fighting monsters.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: To make up for her inability to use magic, she invented magic tools and drugs to fight monsters, even being able to kill a dragon. She then takes the dragon's power as her own by melting down and tattooing the Magicite that she scavenged from the dragon onto her back. This gives her a dragon's strength and attacks, such as firing a magic beam from her mouth.
  • First Kiss: She has her first kiss with Euphie and is rather surprised by it.
  • Genius Bruiser: She's a scientist very dedicated to her magical research. To earn her own money to fund her research, she works as an adventurer and enjoys taking out powerful monsters to use them as research material.
  • Genki Girl: She's always carefree, lively, and full of energy, especially compared to the more reserved Euphie. The times that she isn't any of these are usually causes for concern.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears part of her hair in pigtails.
  • Giving Radio to the Romans: Thanks to her memories of her past life, Anis is able to introduce "modern" concepts to her current world. Besides the magical inventions she made to emulate the technology of her previous world, she also introduces things such as a sewer system and highways to the kingdom.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Leaving aside her eccentricities, Anis is a goodhearted and heroic princess with blonde hair.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Zig-Zagged. When Anis first presented her magicology theories and inventions, a lot of influential nobles and academics declared her a heretic. By the start of the story, a decent number of people have come around and her Magitek is more widely recognized. Anis herself is still generally regarded as an eccentric, though a significant number of people respect her for her research and her work as an adventurer. The series displays the stark contrast on how the Nobles barely tolerate her while the commoners love her.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: During the third volume, Anis reveals to Euphie that she views herself as a fake because she has memories of a previous life from another world, and is unsure whether she's actually "Anis" or someone who forcefully reincarnated into her body and overrode her personality. She thinks that she has robbed her parents of their rightful daughter, and desperately wants to make her parents proud to make up for it.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite her happy-go-lucky personality, Anis is a lot more insecure about her inability to use magic than she initially lets on, which occasionally shows with how willing she is to put herself in danger to advance her magicology or figure out a way to use magic. Her dreams of magic from her past life aside, this is also implied to be rooted in her guilty belief that she robbed her parents of their daughter with her reincarnation; since magic is how a noble's worth is determined in Palettia, it's implied that she thinks that her inability to use it makes her unable to live up to the expectation of a princess.
  • Hot Consort: After Euphie is "adopted" into the royal family to become the next in line for the throne, Anis ends up becoming her future consort rather than the other way around.
  • Idiot Hair: She's a silly and eccentric Rebellious Princess with a strand sticking up from her blonde hair.
  • Immune to Mind Control: The Impressed Seal automatically activates when Anisphia is under a mental attack, like Lainie's mystic eyes, disrupting the normal flow of magic power in her body and causing the attack to fail.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Her attempt to use Obfuscating Stupidity to make Algard look like the better choice for the next king was rooted in good intentions, but ultimately it just feeds his inferiority complex, as it makes Algard feel like he can't be a king without someone helping him.
  • The Kindnapper: While Anis technically kidnapped Euphie, she did it with the intention of extracting her from the humiliating situation that her brother was putting her through which Euphie came to appreciate.
  • Laser Blade: One of Anis' signature inventions is a magical version of one of these. Although it's highly effective against magic, it struggles to keep up against physical attacks. After Euphyllia becomes queen, she commissions Anis a special one named "Celestial" to match the Theme Naming of Euphie's Arc-en-Ciel.
  • Loss of Identity: After regaining her memories of her past life, she worries that this effectively killed the "original" Anisphia in the process, and fears that she can only be considered a fake daughter of the royal family because of it, with her eventually tying it to her self-worth.
  • Marry for Love: When she gave up her right to the throne, the reason she gave was that she refused to be forced into a political marriage with a man in order to give birth to royal heirs, as she can only love another woman.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: Anis is unable to use magic, unlike other nobles, so she invented Magitek instead.
  • Muggle with a Degree in Magic: Even though she can't directly use magic herself, Anis is the creator of magicology and has invented a wide variety of magical items.
  • My Greatest Failure: Anis considers Algard's actions at the end of Volume 2 to be due to her failure as his big sister by pushing him away when they were children, something that causes her no end of grief in the present.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: At least some of Anisphia's erratic behavior is an act, exaggerated to make herself look unfit for the throne. Her father realizes this, and knows much of it is to try and make Algard look like the better candidate for the throne. Though she also legitimately doesn't want the throne and would rather focus on her Magicology research.
  • Past-Life Memories: When she was five years old, Anis regained memories of her past life in a world similar to "our" modern-day world. The memories of the technology from that world helped inspire her studies and inventions in magicology. Knowledge of a world where royalty wasn't as prominent as in her current one also led to her lack of concern regarding her own aristocratic upbringing and values.
  • Plucky Girl: She doesn't let her lack of magic bring her down and puts all of her enthusiasm into her magic research.
  • Power Tattoo: After killing the dragon, it gives her the knowledge of how to use its power which involves having a large glyph tattooed to her back using the magicule of the dragon mixed with ink. The anime shows this was no easy process either as it had to be slowly and painstakingly done the old fashioned way to a needle brush tapping method.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: She's a cute princess who is also a powerful Gold-ranked adventurer capable of slaying a dragon.
  • Princess Protagonist: She's the protagonist and the first princess of the Kingdom of Palettia.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: She's a princess wearing a pinkish-red skirt.
  • Rebellious Princess: She gave up her right to the throne to dedicate herself to her magic research and hates being forced into any situation where she has to act like a proper princess. Her rebellious and reckless behavior is a constant source of headaches for her father the king.
  • Reed Richards Is Useless: Zig-Zagged; one one hand, Anis makes a decent amount of her research and magical inventions available to the kingdom. On the other hand, she promised her father, the king, that she wouldn't introduce too much of either to the public yet (both because some of her work is still considered heretical by powerful nobles and so as not to overshadow her brother, Prince Algard, who's slated to become king in the future).
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Though she's essentially given up any political power by the start of the story, Anis is still a member of the royal family. She spends her time pursuing her studies in magicology, inventing new types of Magitek, and working as a high-ranking adventurer who regularly fights swarms of invading monsters.
  • Sad Clown: Cracks in her happy-go-lucky attitude show during the course of the second and third volumes between realizing Algard's start of darkness was partly her fault, and the revelation that she believes that remembering her previous life might've overwritten the original Anis.
  • Sadistic Choice: After Algard's failed coup and banishment, Anis is effectively given two equally bad choices; either ascend the throne herself, give up her Magitek research and adventuring, and be forced to conceive an heir with an arranged husband, or get to continue with her otherwise carefree life under the condition that Euphie forms a Spirit Contract that will eventually lead to her outliving and forgetting all her loved ones so she can ascend the throne instead. After losing their duel on the matter and accepting Euphie's decision, which is followed by their Relationship Upgrade, Anis resolves to Take a Third Option and research ways to either remove her immortality or achieve it herself so they can be together forever.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: The anime makes it clear that Anis doesn't mind being partially or fully naked around either Ilia or Tilty.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Anis is noted as being one of the shortest characters in the series, but she is also one of the most intelligent as shown by his inventions and creations.
  • Soul-Crushing Desk Job: Well, it's bit more than a simple desk job, but this is the concern of all of Anis' friends and associates in regards to her becoming queen. While Ilia does express to Euphie that Anis would likely be The Good Queen, she and the rest of Anis' close associates also recognise that she’d be utterly miserable in the role, as she'd have to give up her Magitek research, her side career as an adventurer, and potentially lose contact with a lot of her friends, namely those among the commonfolk.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • Algard did not expect Anis to crash into the graduation party where he was publicly breaking off his engagement to Euphie. This gave Anis the chance to whisk Euphie away and inform the king of Algard's actions before he could move forward with his plans.
    • Algard requests permission to leave his house arrest and face the dragon causing the monster stampede, in the hope of restoring some of his lost honor and prestige. It’s in the process of doing this that he, along with everyone else, learn that Anis has just left on her own to do exactly that. Anis is horrified to learn after the fact that she unwittingly acted in complete opposition to her brother.
  • Stepford Smiler: Once she is all but forced to become queen against her wishes, Anis continues to smile and insist that she's doing okay, despite it being painfully apparent to everyone that knows her how much she's actually suffering. Euphie directly confronts her on this despite Anis' repeated denial, but only after Euphie defeats her in a duel does she finally admit that she isn't okay and breaks down in tears.
  • Stress Vomit: Episode 11 depicts Anis going through this after she is forced to suck up to some nobles who belittle her magicology research along with the implication they were going to force her to marry an old man to conceive heirs.
  • Tomboy Princess: While she's a princess, she's also a brave and headstrong adventurer who loves to fight strong monsters to use them as materials in her magic research.
  • Toplessness from the Back: Anis is depicted as this in two anime original scenes. The first is when Ilia is treating Anis' injuries from her experiments in the first episode and the second is when Tilty is giving Anis her dragon tattoo on her back.
  • Tough Leader Façade: After her right to the throne is forcibly reinstated following Algard's banishment, Anis starts acting a lot calmer and packs up a lot of Magitek research, recognising that she won't have the time for it once she assumes the throne. All of her companions instantly pick up on this and are unnerved by her sudden change of personality, with Tilty outright snapping at her once she tries to handwave it.
  • Tragic Mistake: After nearly getting herself and her brother killed when they were kids, Anis heard people spreading rumors that she tried to get her brother killed on purpose. She decided to relinquish her claim to the throne to prove that she had no interest in doing that. Instead, she caused her brother and her to have a strained relationship which led to her brother's Start of Darkness.
  • Un-Sorcerer: Anis is unable to use magic of her own, so she creates special items and weapons that let her keep up with those that can.
  • Victor Gains Loser's Powers: After slaying a dragon, Anis takes the dragon's Magicite and uses it to tattoo it into her own body, thus gaining the dragon's power.
  • Victorious Loser: In the climax of Volume 3, she loses to Euphie in their duel regarding becoming the next Queen. However, she gained more from losing to Euphie than if she had won. She gained a lover, could continue her research, and gained the power to help reshape the kingdom with the woman she loves.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds:
    • With Ilia. The two constantly bicker, which is considered extremely unusual for a member of royalty and a servant, but it's only because the two are so close and loyal to each other.
    • When telling Euphie about Tilty, Anis describes her as a "frenemy" she can't be rid of. Anis helps Tilty with her condition, in which overuse of magic degrades her psychological state, and the two regard one another as friends but constantly bicker and, due to her condition, Tilty hates magic as much as Anis loves it. Yet even so, Tilty is usually one of the first to notice Anis' troubles and take action (or push Euphie into taking action).
  • Warrior Princess: Anis learned the fundamentals of combat from the royal knights, and continued to refine her own form in actual battle. She holds a Gold rank in the Adventurer's Guild and when surrounded on all sides by monsters, a younger adventurer is stopped from interfering because he'd only get in her way.
  • Weak, but Skilled: While she has no magic power, she's a creative inventor of magic items that allow her to fight on the same level as powerful magic users and hunts monsters as a Gold-ranked adventurer.

    Euphyllia "Euphie" Magenta
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/euphyllia_anime_design.png
The Genius Young Lady
Voiced by: Manaka Iwami

The "Perfect Duke's Daughter", Euphyllia is a prodigal young woman with unmatched magical ability and outstanding etiquette befitting of a noble lady. She was engaged to Prince Algard in a political marriage, but the latter suddenly called off the marriage and publicly denounced her, prompting Anisphia to rescue her and take her in as her assistant.

  • The Ace: Euphie is a natural genius who is beautiful, highly educated, well-spoken, trained in martial arts, and blessed with massive magical ability.
  • Act of True Love: Euphie willingly gave up her humanity in order to become a Spirit Contractor, so she could become the next ruler, so Anis won't have to give up her dream even if it means that she might lose what it means to be human in the end.
  • Adopted into Royalty: At the end of Volume 03, Euphyllia is adopted into the royal family, so she can become Queen rather than Anisphia.
  • The Ageless: After becoming a Spirit Contractor, Euphie will apparently remain the same age for the remainder of her existence.
  • Arranged Marriage: Euphie was intended to marry Prince Algard and become queen one day. Algard shockingly calling the marriage off is the event that kickstarts the story.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: At the end of Volume 4, she is formally crowned the queen of Palettia after Orphans abdicates the throne.
  • Broken Ace: Euphyllia is good at virtually everything while also being a noble lady of high status, but she's so focused on fulfilling her duty to her family that she lacks any true drives or aspirations outside of continuing to be the perfect noblewoman, with all of the loneliness and emptiness that entails. The first part of the story is about Anis helping Euphie grow as her own person and find purpose in her life.
  • Character Development: While Euphie generally remains a logical and proper lady, she becomes more open minded and flexible during her time as Anis' assistant. She eventually makes decisions on what she wishes to do with her own life, and is inspired to be more assertive when it comes to what she thinks is best for herself and Anis. Additionally, in regards to her relationship with Anis' they end up having a reversal in their positions. While Euphie was initially somewhat uncomfortable with Anis due to Anis' blatant attraction towards her, Euphie ends up developing feelings for Anis and ends up making the first move to push their relationship towards romantic territory.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Euphie tends to feel jealous whenever someone is able to engage with Anis at a level she isn't able to keep up with, such as when she witnesses Anis and Tilty talking about research. Notably, she isn't even aware of this until Tilty points it out to her face. Additionally, the anime clearly shows Euphie looking uneasy at the idea of Anis taking on a consort if she were to become Queen. After they become a couple, Euphie definitely makes it clear that Anis is hers and hers alone.
  • Cool Sword: After taking Euphie in as her assistant, Anis tirelessly works to craft her a special weapon, a rapier named "Arc-en-Ciel" inset with six magic stones and specifically designed to match Euphie's command over multiple magical attributes. Arc-en-Ciel also becomes the name of the magic attack Euphie uses to defeat Anis in their duel, seemingly achieved by combining all of her attributes at the same time.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Euphie spent most of her life training to become queen one day through her Arranged Marriage with Algard. Once he calls the engagement off, she's at a loss as to what to do with herself. At one point she begs Anis to order a purpose onto her. Anis doesn't do so, instead promising to help her find her own.
  • First Kiss: In a stark contrast to how she was when she met Anis, Euphie is the one to actually engage in the first move when it comes to romance between herself and Anis.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: As excepted of a Duke's daughter, Euphyllia speaks in very formal linguistics at all times.
  • Heroic BSoD: When Algard publicly breaks off their engagement, Euphie is so caught off-guard and overwhelmed by Algard and his cohorts hammering her with false accusations that she starts to freeze up and is barely able to defend herself. She gets pulled out of it when Anis literally crashes into the room.
  • The High Queen: Euphie becomes this after she becomes a Spirit Contractor to take over the throne in Anis' place.
  • Honor Before Reason: Euphie was very much aware that there was no real love between her and Algard, but she was nonetheless determined to go through with their marriage for the sake of her family and the kingdom (and despite not personally desiring the throne for herself).
  • Innocently Insensitive: While her intentions of becoming a Spirit Contractor to replace Anis on the line of succession had good intentions, they did not go over well with Anis for multiple reasons, such as validating Anis' belief that without magic she lacks value, and seeming like an attempt to invalidate what little worth Anis thinks she has left as a princess, namely her duty to the throne.
  • Insecure Love Interest: When she sees Anis and Tilty working together to check on Lainie's vampirism, Euphie feels insecure about her own capacity to support Anis and her magic research. Tilty notices this and encourages her to become serious about proving herself as a good assistant for Anis.
  • Lady of War: She looks beautiful and graceful at all times, including when she's kicking ass.
  • LGBT Awakening: Euphie's feelings for Anis develop while she spends time and gets to know her. It cultivates to her kissing Anis when she was in a coma at the end of Volume 2, and willingly giving up her humanity for Anis' sake during Volume 3.
  • Love Confessor: Her father is the first person she tells that her feelings for Anis go well beyond friendship or being the Princess’ assistant while she attempts to prevent Anis from throwing away the life she enjoys.
  • Love Epiphany: Euphie goes through this at the end of the second volume as she gives Anis a kiss while she is unconscious following her battle with Algard. The third volume is dedicated to her coming to terms with her feelings and deciding what she needs to do for Anis' sake.
  • Master of All: In a setting where most powerful mages are known to have mastery of a single element of magic, Euphie can use all of them simultaneously - and that's before she becomes a spirit contractor.
  • Mystical White Hair: She's a silver-haired mage who has a high compatibility with spirits, being a master of all kinds of spells. She later becomes a Spirit Contractor.
  • Royal Rapier: Arc-en-Ciel, the magic sword Anis made her for her, is shaped like a rapier.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: As the Spirit Contractor, Euphie is a representative of the spirit world and the highest authority in the kingdom, letting her change rules - both political and religious - even against the opposition of the nobles. Given that she did this to save Anis from their machinations, this was intentional.
  • Secret-Keeper: She's the only one that knows about Anis having memories of another life and another world. She vows to keep it a secret until the day she dies.
  • Stepford Smiler: Shows shades of this at the beginning of the story, as her strict upbringing, her duties as a future Queen, and her status within the nobility tend to prevent her (on both a social as well as a psychological level) from being able to express her deep-seated emotions, including pain or anxiety. Anis helps her get better in this aspect.
  • The Tease: Becomes one to Anis during her love confession and Relationship Upgrade, at least in private. When Anis has to work up the courage to kiss Euphie in public—on the cheek—Euphie teases her about how long it will take Anis to kiss her on the lips before giving one of her own.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: After Algard is banished for his attempted coup and Anisphia is thrust into the role of future queen, Euphie is initially inclined towards supporting her right to rule due to her family's duty to serve the royal family, but is concerned about her unusually downbeat behaviour. She becomes a lot more conflicted about this however after Ilia explains just how miserable becoming queen would make Anis, as she would have to abandon her Magitek research to focus on her newfound duties, something a lot of her other friends pick up on. After consulting with Tilty, she decides on "Good" and seeks to find a way so Anis wouldn't have to take the throne.
  • True Blue Femininity: She's a very graceful and feminine young lady wearing a blue dress.
  • What Is This Feeling?: When Euphie witnesses Anis and Tilty having a conversation regarding Anis' research, she feels uneasy. After getting prodded about it, she realizes that she was feeling jealous.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: During Anis' Heroic Self-Deprecation about how she's a fake due to her reincarnation, she assures Anis that her worries are irrelevant, because the person who gave her so much and saved her is definitely real.

Allies

    Ilia Coral
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/illya_coral_anime.png
Voiced by: Ai Kakuma

A maid working for the Palettia royal family and a caretaker of Anisphia who often has to rein in her antics.

  • Beta Couple: Gets plenty of Ship Tease with Lainie, with their relationship becoming the secondary romantic plotline of the work.
  • Covert Pervert: The official Twitter posted a 4koma that shows Ilia wears a blindfold and ropes when Laine sucks her blood, which she thoroughly enjoys (to Lainie's confusion and Anis' irritation).
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: Properly for a maid, Ilia speaks very formally, even when she's snarking at Anis.
  • Hired Help as Family: Anis sees Ilia as family rather than a maid and the feeling is mutual.
  • I Have No Son!: Ilia was initially sent to serve the royal family by her power-hungry, aristocratic parents in the hopes that she'd eventually get married to a powerful noble. Her inability to do this, combined with being the personal maid of someone with Anis' reputation, eventually led to the two effectively disowning her. Ilia isn't particularly sad about it and does not even use her family name most of the time.
  • Meido: She serves Anis as her personal maid.
  • Servile Snarker: She is unfailingly loyal to Anis, but she isn't amused by some of her antics and is not afraid to point it out to her.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is utterly devoted to Anis and while she might wish she was a bit more proper, she will not question any decision she makes, instead giving her 100% cooperation. Even the Vitriolic Best Buds dynamic she shares with Anis is only because it's what Anis herself wants, with Ilia more or less just playing along.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Anis. The two constantly bicker, which is considered extremely unusual for a member of royalty and a servant, but it's only because the two are so close and loyal to each other.

    Lainie Cyan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lainie_anime.png
Voiced by: Hina Yomiya

A commoner-turned-noble who caught the eye of Prince Algard and quickly became close to him. Algard spending more time with her than his betrothed, as well as Euphyllia's eventual intervention, is what causes him to call off their engagement under accusations that Euphyllia was tormenting her.

  • Ambiguously Bi: After moving into Anis' villa she becomes extremely close with Ilia, to the point of being the Beta Couple to Anis and Euphie. On the other hand when questioned about her involvement in the Prince's public annulment she says she does genuinely like Algard, though she is aware that their vastly different stations make it impossible for them to ever be together. Even after Algard reveals his true self, Lainie says that while she will never forgive him for what he did, she believes that his kindness when they were alone was genuine and not just an act. It is hard to say if she was actually in love with Algard or if she was just lonely in general and became attached to the only person she thought was nice to her.
  • Beta Couple: After coming to live with Anis and the others, she develops a close relationship with Ilia, mirroring the way Euphie slowly fell in love with Anis after becoming her assistant. She even decides to become a maid herself because of her interactions with Ilia.
  • Blessed with Suck: The Magicite crystal inside her emits magical energy that influences people's minds and turns them protective of her. However, whenever she moved to an orphanage, people soon started fighting among themselves over Lainie and she ended up being thrown out every time someone got hurt because of her unwitting brainwashing.
  • Bully Magnet: She was bullied at the aristocratic academy because she's a former commoner and Prince Algard paid so much attention to her despite being engaged to Euphyllia. Although Euphyllia herself didn't partake in the bullying, Algard still pinned all the blame on her to publicly accuse her of being a bully and not lose face for breaking off his engagement to her.
  • Charm Person: Lainie is noted to possess an uncanny ability to cause people to be attracted to her and want to protect her. This is because she has a piece of magicite in her heart that lets her unconsciously cast charm magic when she is feeling stressed.
  • Cute Little Fangs: After learning to control her vampire powers, Lainie grows a pair of fangs that look quite cute in her.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Once she learns to properly regulate her heart's Magicite, Lainie manifests her vampire traits physically, growing fangs and sharp nails. She still looks adorable.
  • Daywalking Vampire: While she's a vampire, walking around in sunlight won't do her any harm.
  • Dhampyr: Her father is human, but she has vampire abilities inherited from her mother's side.
  • Extreme Doormat: She didn't agree with Algard breaking off his engagement with Euphie in a humiliating way, but since she is a Shrinking Violet, she was unable to speak in her defense.
  • First Kiss: She had her first kiss with Ilia in the form of a Kiss of Life when she was in desperate need of blood.
  • Forced Sleep: In Volume 03 of the Light Novel, she demonstrates an ability to temporarily put people to sleep using her vampire powers.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Lainie is a very gentle and kind girl, always feeling guilty when the people around her start fighting over her. After she learns this was caused by her vampiric power making her a Charm Person, she keeps her hypnotic abilities under control and becomes a close friend to Anis and Euphie.
  • Healing Factor: Thanks to the Magicite inside her, Lainie's body instantly heals any injuries inflicted on her. She even manages to survive her having her heart ripped out and is fully recovered by the next day.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: She can hypnotize people through eye contact.
  • Immortality Hurts: It is revealed that while Lainie can regenerate injuries if she has enough energy, it does not negate the pain she would feel from them.
  • It Was a Gift: The flower hair decs she wears are a gift from Algard, and while she is deeply hurt by his actions, ultimately she decides to keep them as a reminder of the kind man he was when they were alone.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Lainie is actually a vampire, which in this setting are humans who were altered by a Mad Scientist who sought immortality, resulting in Lainie being born with a Magicite crystal encrusted in her heart. At first, Lainie lacked any vampiric traits and even herself was unaware that she wasn't human, but she still unconciously released her Magicite's power and became a Charm Person that made everyone around her compelled to protect her. Thanks to Anis and Tilty, she learns to control her Magicite and can use her hypnotic abilities at will, but this also causes her to get blood cravings when she's low on magic power.
  • Power Incontinence: She initially has no conscious control of her hypnotic powers, which caused everyone who met her to become obsessively protective of her without Lainie herself understanding the reason until Anis discovered the effect.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Inverted. Her eyes turning red is a sign she has obtained more control over her vampire powers, meaning she is on the right track to a life without charming everyone around her.
  • Royal Bastard: She's the illegitimate daughter of a Baron. She was born as a commoner, but her mother died and her father took her in after he found her at an orphanage.
  • Shrinking Violet: She is very shy and always hesitates to speak her mind. It takes a lot of effort from the other party in the conversation to make her comfortable enough to speak plainly.
  • Technically-Living Vampire: No one, not even Lainie herself, ever noticed she was a vampire until Anis figured it out. The Magicite in her heart gives her hypnotic abilities, a need to drink blood to replenish her magical energy, and powerful regeneration. Other than that, Lainie is basically the same as a human.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Algard was planning to use her power to charm others in his schemes, and certainly took advantage of her power to break off his engagement with Euphie and ruin her reputation. When Anis exposes her powers and takes her in to help her control it, he takes drastic measures by stealing the magicite in her heart to use it himself.
  • Water Is Womanly: She's a feminine and reserved Shrinking Violet who is noted to specialize in water magic.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Unintentional, but her powers work on this principle. If threatened, she emits an aura that can make others want to protect her. Unfortunately for Lainie, this ended up causing disaster since it on at least one occasion caused people to violently turn on each other.

    Tilty Claret
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tilty_claret_anime.png
Voiced by: Yū Sasahara

A strange noble girl who was disowned due to her inability to use magic without damaging herself. She now spends most of her time in solitude, researching curses and helping Anisphia with her magicology research.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: She isn't introduced in the original light novels until the second volume. In the anime adaptation, she makes a small speaking appearance in the first half of the first episode.
  • Black Sheep: Because of her rampages, Tilty became infamous for being a sadist who enjoyed using her magic to torture those around her. All of this eventually prompted her family to cut her off and force her to live in a separate villa in the capital.
  • Blessed with Suck: In two ways - first, she can use magic, but magic tends to accumulate in her body, causing problems for herself and others. Second, she was born a petty noble, but this means she is expected to use magic, and thus disowned as a failure when she is unable to handle her powers safely.
  • Casting a Shadow: Tilty specializes in Dark Magic, which involves weakening and restraining living creatures by manipulating shadows.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She dresses all in black, uses Dark Magic, and has an obsession with researching curses. She's also a close friend to Anis and one of the few nobles who actively supports the development of her Magicology.
  • Does Not Like Magic: Due to her condition, Tilty hates magic, seeing it as a curse that only brings her pain and misery.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: She's a gloomy-looking woman with long black hair and pale skin. She's infamously known for her sadistic tendencies, which were caused by her incompatibility with magic.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: She always has dark circles under her eyes, making her look like an insomniac.
  • Fictional Disability: She suffers from an incurable affliction that left her unable to properly release her magical energy, causing her physical and mental pain whenever she tries to use her magic.
  • Foil: To Anis - Anis wants to use magic but can't, whereas she has to use magic but finds the experience painful. The result is that Anis idealizes magic, seeing it as the solution to all problems, while Tilty hates magic, seeing it as a curse.
  • Goth: She wears a black dress and is seen as an outcast by the noble society because her high magical power causes ill effects in her physical and mental health, which caused her to lash out and become known as an unhinged sadist. She has gotten better thanks to befriending Anis, but she's still a gloomy person with a strangely enthusiastic obsession with curses.
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: She can store weapons in her shadow.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: She wears a black dress that is slit on the left side.
  • Shipper on Deck: She is very proactive in helping Anis and Euphie in both realizing their feelings for one another and helping them get together.
  • Tsundere: A somewhat Downplayed example in regards to Anis. While she doesn't show much outwardly, and it's not exactly clear how much of her behavior is motivated by scientific interest and the pursuit of knowledge, rather than any genuine affection for Anis, the fact remains that she's very quick to catch on to both Anis and Euphie's emotional turmoils, and repeatedly attempts to nudge them in directions she thinks will make them happier. To wit, she scolds Euphie several times for, seemingly, not acknowledging her own feelings for Anis. She's also the first to explicitly confront Anis when she accepts the role of Queen, while knowing she'll have to abandon the research she loves and dooming herself to unhappiness. In a moment that's hard to interpret as anything but Anger Born of Worry, she even gives her a "baka"!
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Tilty and Anis are described as two peas in a pod by Ilia, and indeed the two regard one another as friends. However their main form of interaction is constant bickering and, despite their professional relationship, the two have completely opposite views on magic, Anis loving it despite not being able to use it whereas Tilty hates it because using it aggrevates her condition.

Royal Family

    Algard "Allie" Von Palettia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/algard_allie_anime_7.png
Voiced by: Shogo Sakata

Anisphia's younger brother and the current heir to the throne. His rebellious nature and unwillingness to conform to his royal duties often cause him to act out of line, ending in him forcibly breaking off his arranged marriage with Euphyllia and kick-starting the plot.

  • Always Second Best: Algard bitterly notes to his father that, despite her eccentric reputation, Anis is still regarded as a better choice for the throne than him by a lot of people (with Anis' lack of magical ability being seen as the only thing Algard really has over her), and that he's been stewing in those rumors for all his life.
  • The Atoner: Following his defeat, he appears to wish to atone for the crimes he committed. Before he is taken away, he asks Euphie to take care of his sister.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: He hates the class system based on magical ability and how it abuses the common folk. However, he believes that the only way to truly change the system is to be a tyrant himself. To gain power, he allies with Duke Chartreuse and other members of a highly conservative faction that fanatically reveres certain noble traditions, and look down upon both the royal children and the commoners. Finally, he seriously injures Lainie, a commoner, to get her magicite crystal and charm powers.
  • Bloody Murder: After becoming a vampire, Algard gains the ability to manipulate his own blood and use it as a weapon.
  • The Bus Came Back: After being absent from Volumes 3 & 4 due to his exile, he reappears in Volume 5 when Anis and Euphie visit him in the frontier.
  • Cain and Abel: He acts as the Cain to Anis' Abel, becoming a tyrant in a vain attempt to surpass her, while she opposes his machinations.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Prince Charming often seen in manga and games aimed at the Shōjo Demographic. Algard shares a lot of character traits with the archetype, such as a desire to fix the social problems of his kingdom and a refusal to bend his will to the rules. He also shows how destructive those traits can be. He hates his Arranged Marriage for being something another person decided for him, and so he ends up also hating Euphie just for being his fiancee, even when she has done nothing wrong. His insistence in doing things based on what he thinks is right leads to political unrest as he breaks several rules and social norms with no regards for consequences. Finally, the knowledge that nobles will not quietly accept social reforms that bring more equality, mixed with his own Inferiority Superiority Complex, leads to him concluding that he must force his kingdom to be better.
  • Elemental Barrier: He can create ice barriers.
  • Elemental Weapon: In combat, he generates an ice sword and a water hammer.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Algard hates his kingdom's classism and magic-centric elitism so much that he cannot understand why Anis can love magic, or why his family is trying to keep the peace with the nobles. His refusal to either understand his family's actions or to talk about his own feelings lead him to participate in a coup attempt for the sake of tearing down the system.
  • The Exile: After his defeat at the end of the second Volume, his co-conspirators are put to death while he is exiled to another region. This is because of him becoming a vampire, as the royal family decides to research his condition while preventing any potential children he could have from tainting their name.
  • Graceful Loser: After being defeated by Anis, he submits himself to the king and queen and accepts his exile without any furthe resistance. Even when the queen blames herself for failing him as a mother, Algard denies this, taking sole responsibility for his actions.
  • Heroic Wannabe: It's not enough for Algard to be a good king who brings positive changes to the kingdom, he needs to make everyone recognize he can be this king too.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: Exactly why Algard decided to publicly call off his engagement with Euphie, slander her with false accusations, and pursue marriage with Lainie is the big Driving Question for the first arc of the story.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: Algard was in a great position at the start of the series, as he was next in line to the throne, engaged to The Ace and his talented sister still loved him and wanted to stay out of succession for his sake. However, his Inferiority Superiority Complex, his unwillingness to accept the Arranged Marriage with Euphie and his hatred of the nobles lead him to publicly reject Euphie and then to attempt a coup. Anis kidnaps Euphie and stops his coup, and he is exiled to a border province.
  • Ice Magic Is Water: Algard uses a mix of water and ice magic. When he fights with Anisphia, he makes a deliberate point of using ice magic because, unlike water, ice is a solid object and Anis' mana blade is more vulnerable to physical damage.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: His motivations for his actions, such as abruptly breaking off his engagement with Euphyllia in favour of Lainie, seem motivated by his resentment over being thrust into the role of king due to Anisphia renouncing her right to the throne to focus on her research. Unlike most examples of this however, this is not presented in a manner that makes him sympathetic, as he acts like a massive Jerkass about it and goes as far as to publicly humiliate and socially assassinate Euphyllia for the crime of being his partner in an Arranged Marriage.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: He spent years hearing everyone around him praising his sister for her inventions and talking about how she would be a great ruler if she had been born with magic. His main objective now is to prove he can be a great ruler too so that he can escape from his sister's shadow.
  • Jerkass: Although his motivations are understandable, Algard certainly doesn't make any effort to win sympathy. He is constantly trying to make others do as he says while brushing off attempts to reason with him, and is downright vicious towards the people he hates.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: Subverted; the king initially suspects that this is why Algard broke off his engagement with Euphie: he's so infatuated with Lainie that he called off the Arranged Marriage without thinking things through. After speaking with Algard in person, the king realizes that this isn't the case since he's acting cold, passionless, and nothing like a man in love. It's revealed later he can resist Laine's charm magic because he is cold enough to ignore his affection for her.
  • Made of Iron: After his vampiric transformation, he takes multiple mortal wounds in rapid succession, but his new Healing Factor allows him to recover from them almost instantly. However, as Lainie notes, a vampire would still feel all of the pain from the wounds, leading her to wonder how Algard can not only stay standing, but power through the pain and keep fighting.
  • Making a Splash: He is extremely skilled at the use of water and ice magic. In his fight with Anisphia he uses water magic to set up for a second ice attack by freezing the water he used initially.
  • The Pardon: In Volume 5, Euphie uses her authority as queen to pardon him for his crimes in exchange for placing him in charge of developing the frontier regions.
  • Put on a Bus: After his defeat at the end of the second volume, he is removed from the story by being banished and forced to serve the kingdom through other means for the remainder of his life.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: After putting the magicite from Lainie's body into his own, he not only becomes a vampire, but he permanently gains red eyes in the process.
  • Screw Destiny: When Algard breaks off his engagement with Euphie, she tries to reason with him by invoking their duty to their families and kingdom. He just angrily retorts that he'll forge his own path in life. He later makes a similar claim to his father, declaring that he won't just accept the life that's been arranged for him.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: His inferiority complex is so immense that he believes that no one would willingly follow his lead, so he decides to control the direction of the kingdom by force, becoming the exact kind of tyrant that no one would willingly follow.
  • Shipper on Deck: As he is departing, he asks Euphie to look out for his sister. It is implied that he is aware that Euphie had developed feelings for his sister.
  • Starter Villain: The first major antagonist of the story. His actions are what essentially kick off the main plot.
  • Start of Darkness: When Algard and Anis were young, they ran into a monster while playing in the forest. Anis put herself at risk to save Algard's life, but when they returned people began spreading some nasty rumors about how the magic-less Anis must have tried to kill her magical brother out of jealousy. Algard could only watch helplessly as his older sister withdrew and willingly built a reputation as the kingdom's "problem child" partly to stop the rumors and keep the peace, which forced him to become the heir in spite of his mediocrity. His feelings towards Anis are a complicated mix of anger at the unfair treatment she received for not having magic, frustrated incomprehension at how she could possibly love magic in spite of that, and hating her for running away and abandoning him to a kinghood he'd never be good enough for.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: His father laments that Algard used to be a sweet kid that had a loving relationship with his sister. This, of course, changes as he slowly gets bitter that he's seen as Always Second Best to his sister.
  • Victorious Loser: While Algard's coup fails, it results in the leadership of the conservative faction being all either executed or otherwise punished. This weakens the opposition to Anis from among the nobles, and ends up with Anis and Euphyllia being in power on the country, who share a lot of his ideologies and worries about elitism.
  • The Von Trope Family: He's the prince of Palettia, with "Von" in the middle of his name.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He hates the nobility system of the kingdom that allows nobles to oppress and abuse commoners. However, his bottled up bitterness at being looked down upon by nobles his entire life has convinced him that no one will follow him if he became king by the rules, and that the only way for him to bring change is by enforcing his will through force.

    King Orphanse Palettia II
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sub_01_01_02.png
Voiced by: Kenji Hamada

The current king of Palettia, who is constantly beleaguered by Anisphia's insanity and Algard's rebelliousness.

  • Abdicate the Throne: At the end of Volume 4, he decides to step down as king and nominates Euphie to succeed him.
  • Call to Agriculture: Grantz mentions that Orphanse originally wanted to become a gardener, but circumstances forced him to become king. After he abdicates the throne in favor of Euphyllia, he's shown growing vegetables like he always wanted.
  • Classy Cravat: He's a king wearing a cravat.
  • The Good King: He is established as having a good reputation as a benevolent king that does not abuse his powers. He wishes he could help his daughter further with her endeavors to help the commonfolk, but politics prevents him from going further than he is able to.
  • I Want Grandkids: He goes ballistic when his daughter says that she doesn't want to marry a man simply because she doesn't want to get pregnant.
Anisphia: What's the point in passing my genes along when I can't even use magic?
Orphanse: Do you not understand a fathers' desire to see his daughter's child?! I feel so hopeless, I could cry!
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While his daughter drives him crazy, he is supportive of her Magicology projects to help the commonfolk, and he is willing to show leniency towards his daughter's actions when they prove to be a benefit to the kingdom, such as in the aftermath of the battle with the dragon.
  • Straight Man: To Anisphia's antics. While most of the people close to her have long given up trying to get her to behave, he is always calling her out loudly for not acting like a member of the royal family. However, for all of the grief Anisphia gives him and how much hell he gives her for it, it's as clear as day that he genuinely loves her as his daughter.
  • Suddenly Shouting: He is usually a calm and modest man, but catching sight of Anisphia's antics causes him to raise his volume really fast.

    Queen Sylphine Maise Palettia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sub_05_01.png
Voiced by: Sachiko Kojima

The queen of Palettia.

  • Adaptational Personality Change: The anime removes most of her The Dreaded elements, and transfers some of them to her husband.
  • The Dreaded: A humorous example. She is feared by everyone in her family, especially Anis. The normally energetic and happy-go-lucky princess is reduced to a nervous wreck when confronted by her displeased mother.
  • Motherly Side Plait: Fittingly for her role as a mother, she wears a loose braid over her left shoulder.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: Anis takes note that her mother looks only slightly older than herself.
  • My Greatest Failure: During Volume 3, the Queen more or less resigned from most of her regular duties out of shame for what Algard had become. She realizes that she failed him as a mother, and the shame drives her to the point she is nearly incapable of sleep until Laine hypnotizes her.
  • Older Than She Looks: She appears to be around the same age as her daughter despite actually being nearly twice as old.
  • Parental Neglect: Deconstructed. She fully believes that her neglectfulness as a mother was a major contributing factor to her son's hatred for everything which ultimately led to his banishment.
  • Parents as People: Overly strict as she might be at times, she genuinely cares for her children and believes her "education" to be for their own good. After Algard's failed coup and exile, Sylphine feels guilty and thinks she failed her children as a mother, since she usually traveled to other countries as a diplomat and didn't spend enough time with Anis and Algard to ease their respective insecurities as heirs to the throne.
  • Retired Badass: Anis says that at her age, her mother was an Amazon on the battlefield. Now she works as an ambassador, touring neighboring countries. In Volume 3, it is revealed that she has retired from doing that due to the shame of believing she failed her children as a mother.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: While she's the queen, she usually leaves the country to work as a diplomatic ambassador for the kingdom.
  • Tough Leader Façade: As a former warrior-turned-politician, Sylphine constantly maintains an air of dominance about her that intimidates even her own husband and daughter. Beneath Sylphine's tough outer demeanor, however, lies an overly protective and even somewhat frail woman who constantly worries for her children's wellbeing.

    Grantz Magenta
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sub_02_01_02.png
Voiced by: Tomohiro Tsuboi

Euphyllia's father and a prime minister who is often found at the king's side as an advisor and friend.

  • Classy Cravat: He wears cravat as it's fit for a duke and prime minister.
  • Honest Advisor: The advice he gives to his king and others is largely honest. While he may have goals, they are never meant to be treacherous to others.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Thanks in no small part to his rather stoic demeanor, he often has trouble expressing his true thoughts without sounding cold or dismissive. Of note is his way of consoling his daughter over her marriage annulment; to him, he is telling her she did her best and need not fret over her future, but the way he phrases it makes it seem like he is saying that since she failed she is no longer needed.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While it's more that he's a stoic and emotionally-stunted Ice King who projects an air of indifference towards his daughter out of overzealous duty rather than a straight-up "jerk", ultimately, it's clear that he's trying to do what's best for the kingdom, as well as Orphanse and his own daughter. He may not show it much, but he does love them both, and considers their feelings.
  • Noodle Incident: At some point, Grantz met the lofty qualifications to forge a Spirit Contract, but turned it down. It's uncertain what reason he had to even consider one in the first place, but the bitterness in his voice when he recalls it seems to indicate that it was a bit more than him just not wanting it.
  • Parents as People: He never meant to hurt his daughter or make her feel bad about her duties, but he has trouble figuring out how to give good advice while still sounding kind and supportive. This results in him sounding too impersonal when talking with Euphie, making her worry he is angry or disappointed with her.

    Lumielle "Lumi" Rene Palettia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sub_06_01.png
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya

The ancestor of the current Palettia family, who has become an immortal, unaging being due to becoming a Spirit Contractor back when she was a princess.

  • The Ageless: She hasn't aged ever since she became a Spirit Contractor. Sylphine remarks that Lumi looks exactly the same as she did when they first met decades ago.
  • The Fog of Ages: After living for hundreds of years, she has despaired over losing her memories of everything and everyone from her mortal life. Even writing them down wasn't a solution for her, as written records couldn't preserve her emotions.
  • Living Distant Ancestor: She's the distant ancestor of the Palettia royal family. She still lives after around 1,000 years due to being an immortal Spirit Contractor.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: When she was queen, she had a husband, only to watch him grow old and outlive him while she became The Ageless.
  • Patricide: Her father, the first king of the Kingdom of Palettia, entered into a spirit covenant to "help his people" as they struggled to cultivate the still-developing land. Wishing to aid her father, she entered into one as well to "support him and the country." However, over time, the people grew greedy and requested her father use his power to conquer other lands, which he could not refuse due to the terms of his covenant. In the end, unable to bare seeing her father being used as a weapon, Lumielle killed him for the "greater good of the nation."
  • Power at a Price: By entering into a Spirit Contract, one will gain incredible magical power and utmost authority within the kingdom of Palettia, but will also gradually lose all their human memories and desires as they become a Spirit themselves. The light novel also elaborates on how depending on the wish one made at the time that they entered the Contract, they may also gain a compulsion to indulge that wish no matter what.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Lumi looks around the same age as Anis, but she's far older given that she's her immortal ancestor.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: She's an immortal Spirit Contractor with yellow-green eyes.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: She makes a point of warning Euphie about how the immortality of the Spirit Contract can be a curse, as she'll inevitably outlive everyone she cares about and forget all about her love for Anis just like how Lumi outlived her husband and forgot all her human emotions after centuries of living alone.
