Magical Sempai has a small cast, with characters being introduced fairly slowly in the first couple of volumes, but that doesn't mean there aren't multiple recurring characters.

The protagonist. Although he just joined the Magic Club to fulfill the school's requirements and has no personal interest in magic, he's much more competent than Sempai.

  • Buxom Beauty Standard: He has stated on several occasions that he's attracted to women with large breasts.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: He tries to keep Sempai from going too extreme with her magic tricks, and helps clean up whenever his trying fails.
  • Covert Pervert: It's heavily implied that part of the reason why he continues to hang out with Sempai is due to her buxom appearance. Granted, she wasn't very willing to let the one person who went to the Magic Club go either.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Downplayed. Whenever there seems to be indications that Sempai is either in a relationship or being flirted with, he'll deny it being the case while still clearly doubtful enough to try and follow her over it, and later trying to intervene when he seems to be genuinely worried for her welfare (which turns out to be unwarranted, but he does know she's a bit oblivious).
  • Eating the Eye Candy: He's easily distracted whenever Sempai's antics and outfits are revealing.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He's only known as "Assistant".
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Sometimes when Sempai flubs a trick, he tries to do it himself. He pulls it off perfectly each time.
  • Love Triangle: Madara-san has feelings for him and wouldn't mind being his girlfriend. Sempai also has feelings for him, but is hesitant to pursue them. The situation is not resolved at the aquarium, evolving into this situation.
  • Lovely Assistant: He's described as this by Sempai. However, if Sempai were his assistant, she'd fit the role much better, especially considering how much more competent he is.
  • Not So Above It All: He's the least extreme of the Magic Club, while Masashi is a tad more of a tepid character, but even he has his moments like the time he took the doves home with him to think of a name for them, which caused him to stay up late spending hours looking up the subject online and then prepared a report on the topic to give to the club. And then everyone disagreed with his names and he lost at Rock–Paper–Scissors so the doves were named after Saki-chan and Masashi's suggestions.
  • Only Sane Man: Most often than not, he ends up playing this role to all the lunatics around them.
  • Selective Obliviousness: He's oblivious when it comes to his own feelings for Sempai. This is especially evident when he becomes jealous whenever it seems like Sempai is in a relationship or gets flirted with.
  • This Loser Is You: Zigzagged. He's somewhat of an antisocial pervert who would prefer to stay at home and play video games rather than join a club or participate in extracurricular activities. However, within the Magic Club, he's the more competent performer. Regardless, he's probably the most normal member of the cast, although that isn't saying much given how the others are flawed by their own quirks.
  • Tsundere: Though in denial, he shows interest in Sempai and tries to ensure she doesn't get hurt or taken advantage of by strangers. He also tries to brainstorm methods to alleviate her Performance Anxiety and enjoys her company when she isn't overtly obsessed with magic. Such moments are terribly rare.

The heroine. She looks to continue the legacy of the Magic Club that she was a part of before all of the other members graduated. However, thanks to her stage fright, that will be difficult...

  • Book Dumb: She has to take a remedial test after school to maintain a passing score. Saki-chan surmises that Sempai is actually smarter than she looks since is she knowledgeable in useless facts, but is so obsessed with practicing magic tricks in class that she doesn't pay attention and scores poorly.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: This is how she keeps the leadership position in her "club" once she's challenged by Saki-chan and the four members of the club can't decide it with a vote. Her older sister suggests that whoever of the two has the largest bust gets the role and it turns out she has the biggest and heaviest bust of the two after they're measured on a scale.
  • Butt-Monkey: If anything bad and/or humiliating happens, most of which is due her clumsiness, odds are that she ends getting the short end of the stick.
  • Celibate Hero: When under the mistaken belief that Assistant wants to date her, Sempai tries to explain she can't devote time into a relationship and be serious about the Magic Club, turning down his confession. This occurs again when Assistant actually asks her out a date to the local aquarium and she returns his tickets. Madara-san then offers to go.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She's possessive of Assistant and shows concern whenever another woman tries to take him away from the Magic Club. When Assistant goes on a date with Madara-san, she secretly follows to spy on them.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: With an audience to perform in front of, she's incredibly clumsy, so she ends up failing her magic tricks and embarrassing herself, especially causing Wardrobe Malfunctions. Saki-chan once suggests she embraces it by playing as a Pierrot.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Though the way it's colored, it appears to be part of her lip rather than a tooth. In Chapter 52, they are clearly presented as actual teeth.
  • D-Cup Distress: Though she seems oblivious about it, her enormous breasts sometimes impede her ability to successfully perform magic tricks.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": She usually gets called Sempai, or sister from her older sister, and Magic-chan from Saki-chan once.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: Sempai can do magic tricks. She just can't perform them for other people, and every attempt to do so will inevitably be amusing and/or a Fanservice-y failure. For example, she once performed before a bunch of kindergartners. She still messed up her tricks, but not so badly that a bunch of kids particularly noticed or cared. And then after she made a candy disappear, they try to root into her clothes looking for it while she was still wearing them.
  • Hidden Depths: She's an excellent runner, to the point where the Track and Field Club recruits her after seeing her in action. However, she's far too obsessed with magic to nurture this talent and her preliminary membership with the Track and Field Club sees her getting kicked out due to her constantly trying to recruit for the Magic Club.
  • Last of His Kind: Prior to the start of the series, the Magic Club had other members besides Sempai, but they all graduated. This is why she's so aggressive in trying to recruit more members in order to keep it afloat.
  • Male Gaze: Due to her energetic personality and large bust, she's prone to frequent bouncing.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: She's quite energetic and upbeat, whose hobbies and antics have made Assistant's life much more lively ever since they met.
  • Moment Killer: It is inevitable that any sort of tender moments between her and Assistant will end up ruined, probably by her somehow.
  • Obliviously Beautiful: She doesn't seem entirely aware that her bountiful chest and natural curves attract attention. When men flirt with her, she instantly assumes it's because they like her magic tricks. However, she does possess modesty and will become embarrassed upon realizing she's being leered at.
  • Overly-Nervous Flop Sweat: Downplayed. While she definitely gets a few sweat drops on her face when she experiences too much Performance Anxiety, the usual focus is her hands becoming so sweaty that she can't possibly perform her magic tricks correctly. Touching them leaves Assistant appalled.
  • Performance Anxiety: This is the reason why she's such a bad magician. When no one is watching, or when she thinks that no one is watching, she pulls off each trick. When she has an audience, she flubs everything.
  • Plucky Girl: She never stops practicing magic or expecting that she'll be able to perform it publicly this time, despite overwhelming evidence against the latter.
  • Prone to Tears: While she's usually very energetic and upbeat, her energy is just as liable to be channeled into other emotions. As such, she's prone to this whenever her magic fails as she tries to perform it before other people. Additionally, this might also happen for other reasons, like when she feels solidarity with Masashi after he mentioned about how much his older sister Saki-chan butts into his life.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: She has a tendency to wind up in comprising positions when she screws up a trick.
  • Slapstick: She's a frequent victim of this, thanks to flubbing her magic tricks.
  • Sleepyhead: She can sleep anywhere. If it takes Sempai three minutes to fall to sleep, it was hard for her to sleep that night.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: She tries to credit herself with teaching Assistant whenever he correctly performs or takes any sort of interest in magic himself. Naturally, the only teaching she could do for him is how not to do it.
  • Stage Magician: She aspires really hard to be this. Unfortunately, her performance anxiety is her biggest problem.
  • Stress Vomit: She throws up after experiencing too much performance anxiety.
  • Supreme Chef: Downplayed. Apparently, the cookies she bakes are pretty good. Unfortunately, she gimmicks them, so the rest of the Magic Club nearly ends up choking on strings.
  • Sweet Tooth: Her favorite foods are sweets and sweet-tasting curry.
  • Weak-Willed: Realistic version. In real life, the people who are most susceptible to hypnosis are those who are easily suggestible. In other words, stupid enough to be fooled by the trick. Sempai is none too bright, so it's too easy for Assistant to hypnotize her. He ends up forcing her to do some pretty lewd things before realizing when he's done that he can't snap her out of it.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's afraid of balloons.

    Saki-chan

Saki-chan

A gyaru who joins the Magic Club in an attempt to transform it into the Street Performance Club. She's obsessed with her younger brother Masashi.

  • Big-Breast Pride: She introduces herself to Assistant by asking if he likes big boobs. She also wears her school uniform necktie lower than normal to draw attention to her chest.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She's well-endowed and is flaunts it, to the approval of Assistant.
  • Chubby Chaser: She's obsessed with her brother Masashi and describes him as attractive. Not only is he fat, he's downright plain.
  • Friendly Rivalry: She hasn't given up her dream of turning the Magic Club into the Street Performance Club, and will occasionally attempt to demonstrate why her way of thinking is superior to Sempai's. However, she isn't hostile towards Sempai and the two like to hang out together.
  • Gyaru Girl: She's a kogal who's explicitly noted to wear makeup and colored contacts.
  • Hellish Pupils: Though not demonic, she has crimson irises with cat-like pupils. In combination with her flirtatious personality and attractive curves, it lends a playful succubus feel.
  • Hidden Depths: She's talented at crafting dolls and stuffed toys based on a person's likeness. She also demonstrates knowledge in computer science and online multimedia.
  • Lethal Chef: She's terrible at baking; the cookies she makes are compared to charcoal.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: She doesn't respond well to negative comments about Masashi, or when he leers at other women.
  • Shipper on Deck: She believes that Assistant and Sempai make a great couple, and will occasionally try to nudge them together.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She has a rather unhealthy complex for Masashi.
  • Stalker with a Crush: There are some indications she does a few things that wouldn't be out of place for a stalker to Masashi, like stealing his dirty clothes or going through his garbage.
  • The Tease: She's a playful tease towards Assistant. She uses this trait more seriously towards Masashi.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: She wears a pair of seashell-shaped hair decorations.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: She was able to fit a balloon flower in cleavage in episode 6.

    Masashi

Masashi

Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character_z_makun.png

Saki-chan's younger brother. He's fat and not as good at street performing as his sister.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Saki-chan refers to him as "Ma-kun".
  • Always Someone Better: He has this sort of relationship with his sister. Saki-chan actually took up street performing because Masashi was interested in it. She quickly became better at it than he ever was.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: He doesn't enjoy being rude to Saki-chan and wishes they had a better sibling relationship, but her overly affectionate nature makes it difficult. However, on the occasions he thinks he's gone too far, he will immediately apologize to her. Unfortunately, this tends to fuel her obsession for him.
  • Brain Bleach: Whenever he sees Saki-chan in skimpy clothing or nude. This also occurs whenever she does something perverted towards him.
  • Covert Pervert: He doesn't mind helping Assistant with schemes that have Sempai or Madara-san in revealing clothing. Considering Assistant's motivations, it wouldn't be surprising if he's also just in the Magic Club to get to look at Sempai some more.
  • Porn Stash: Indirectly mentioned by Saki-chan, who apparently watched pornography of someone picking up high school girls to have sex with them in a minivan from Masashi's stash, as she wonders if a man unknown to the club secretly meeting with Sempai is such a porn star. Masashi insists it just had his favorite actress in it.
  • Satellite Character: In spite of being a recurring character, he has very little personality and exists more or less for Saki-chan to fawn over. In the notes for Chapter 42, it's noted that they had a lot of detail on him, but found it excessive and so they cut it out.
  • What Does She See in Him?: From time to time, Assistant ponders why Saki-chan is so obsessed with her brother. It's later revealed she's been obsessed with him since the day he was born and has an extreme way of expressing love.

    Sister

Sister

Voiced by: Himika Akaneya (Japanese), Cristina Valenzuela (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character_z_one_chan.png

Sempai's loving older sister and Assistant's childish homeroom teacher.

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: A variant of this is how Sempai sees her older sister, who, much to Sempai's chagrin, works at the same high school as a teacher.
  • Big Sister Bully: Downplayed. While she isn't outright abusive towards Sempai, she still never fails to tease her over her magic obsession and practice, as well as constantly trying to butt in with her doings as much as she can when Sempai obviously doesn't want her around anymore than she has to.
  • Cool Big Sis: She's introduced as Sempai's big sister, though Sempai is often embarrassed by her.
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: She's into it. Sempai borrowed her Playboy Bunny outfit, and she has other outfits just like it.
  • Embarrassing Relative Teacher: For Sempai, and she is legitimately so, as she is a rather childish gadfly that gets dragged away by the other teacher for making a scene.
  • The Gadfly: She loves teasing her sister.
  • Happily Married: She and her husband are quite happy together.
  • Old Maid: Discussed and ultimately subverted. She's married. That said, she certainly feels old, in spite of only being 25. She notes that the difference between being 17 and being 25 is huge.
  • Playboy Bunny: The sexy stage outfit Sempai borrows belongs to her.
  • Sensei-chan: She's a classic example of this when she's around her sister.
  • Stepford Smiler: Done for a one-off joke. While drinking in a bath around Saki-chan, she goes on about all the work teachers have to do during the summer instead of a vacation, remarking that would drive anyone to drink and idly wishing a meteor would crash into the Earth.

    Madara-san

Madara-san

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character_z_madara_san.png

The president of the Chemistry Club. Introduced as a skeptic who despises magic, she comes around and starts to enjoy it.

  • Crush Blush: Whenever she ends up alone with Assistant, she tend to blush, smile, and fiddle far more than she usually does.
  • Extreme Doormat: She considers herself a "complete pushover" and states it as the reason for letting Sempai use the chemistry lab's storage room for the Magic Club without complaining about it.
  • Foil: She's just like Sempai with regards to chemistry instead of magic, just as eager and willing to perform "scientific" tricks whenever she can. Otherwise though, she's a quiet, thin introvert that is diametrical to the buxom bundle of energy that is Sempai.
  • Nerd Glasses: She wears glasses and is the very brainy president of the Chemistry Club.
  • Not So Above It All: She considers Sempai's form of "magic" to be utter garbage. However, if she's alone with Assistant, she won't mind and even get overly eager to perform "scientific" tricks, a.k.a. "laboratory magic", for him without much or any prompting.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After Sempai rejects a date to the aquarium with Assistant, Madara-san goes with him instead. Despite Sempai claiming she couldn't date Assistant, Sempai spies on them. This causes Madara-san to call out Sempai on the spot. She explains how Sempai is selfish and uses Assistant to maintain the Magic Club's minimum number of participants to remain active, then demands that Sempai let Assistant join a club that appreciates him as more than a slave.
  • Scary Teeth: Her teeth are jagged like a shark's.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: She's short and knows a lot about chemistry.
