She appears to Euphie in her DarkestHour to give her an option that would allow her to instantly fix her problem, by becoming a Spirit Contractor [[spoiler:and earning the right to the throne so that Anis doesn't have to suffer as queen.]] However, she also makes it abundantly clear that the Spirit Contract has ''many'' undesirable side effects, and originally appears to Euphie to stop her from following through with it.

* VictoriousLoser: [[spoiler:While Algard's coup fails, it results in the leadership of the conservative faction being all either executed or otherwise punished. This weakens the opposition to Anis from among the nobles.]]

* QueerEstablishingMoment: Anis came out of the closet when she was a child. Euphie’s feelings develop over the course of the first three volumes until she actually confesses her feelings outright.

* BabyFactory: Following [[spoiler:Algard's exile]], the nobles intended to turn Anis into this, but [[spoiler:Euphie's decision to become a Spirit Contractor]] prevented this.

[[spoiler:After Euphyllia becomes queen]], she commissions Anis a special one named [[ICallItVera "Celestial"]] to match the ThemeNaming of Euphie's Arc-en-Ciel.

* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler:Anis considers Algard’s actions at the end of Volume 2 to be due to her failure as his big sister by pushing him away when they were children, something that causes her no end of grief in the present.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: At least some of Anisphia's erratic behavior is an act, exaggerated to make herself look unfit for the throne. Her father realizes this, and knows much of it is to try and make Algard look like the better candidate for the throne. Though she also legitimately doesn’t want the throne and would rather focus on her Magicology research.

* ReplacementGoldfish: Her reasons for [[spoiler: trying to go ahead with becoming queen despite her clear discomfort with the idea, and her resistance towards Euphie trying relieve the burden from her, is because she feels that she’s an unwitting example of this. After regaining her memories of her past life, [[DeathOfPersonality she worries that this effectively killed the “original” Anisphia in the process]], and so was dedicated to filling the void she left for both her family and the kingdom, with her eventually tying it it to her self-worth. So while Euphie's plans to become queen in her stead were well-intentioned, it ultimately brought her insecurities about her worth as a princess to the forefront, which along with [[WhoWantsToLiveForever Euphie's potential fate from forging a spirit contract]], causes her to vehemently oppose the idea.]]

* SadisticChoice: After [[spoiler: Algard's failed coup and banishment, Anis is effectively given two equally bad choices; either ascend the throne herself, give up her {{Magitek}} research and adventuring, and be forced to [[IncompatableOrientation conceive an heir]] [[ArrangedMarriage with an arranged husband]], or get to continue with her otherwise carefree life under the condition that Euphie forms a Spirit Contract that will eventually lead to her [[WhoWantsToLiveForever outliving and forgetting all her loved ones]] so she can ascend the throne instead. After losing their duel on the matter and accepting Euphie’s decision, which is followed by their RelationshipUpgrade, Anis resolves to TakeAThirdOption and research ways to either remove her immortality or [[ImmortalitySeeker achieve it herself]] so they can be together forever.]]

* TragicMistake: [[spoiler:After nearly getting herself and her brother killed when they were kids, Anis heard people spreading rumors that she tried to get her brother killed on purpose. She decided to relinquish her claim to the throne to prove that she had no interest in doing that. * InnocentlyInsensitive: [[spoiler:While her intentions of becoming a Spirit Contractor to replace Anis on the line of succession had good intentions, they did not go over well with Anis for multiple reasons, such as validating Anis' belief that without magic she lacks value, and seeming like an attempt to invalidate what little worth Anis thinks she has left as a princess, namely her duty to the throne.]]

* HealingFactor: It is revealed that while Lainie can regenerate injuries if she has enough energy, it does not negate the pain she would feel from them.

* RedEyesTakeWarning: Inverted. [[spoiler:Her eyes turning red (plus her nails and teeth growing) is a sign she has obtained more control over her vampire powers, meaning she is on the right track to a life without charming everyone around her.]]

* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: While his daughter drives him crazy, he is supportive of her Magicology projects to help the commonfolk, and he is willing to show leniency towards his daughter's actions when they prove to be a benefit to the kingdom, such as in the aftermath of the battle with the dragon.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While it's more that he's [[{{Kuudere}} a stoic and emotionally-stunted]] IceKing who projects an air of indifference towards his daughter out of overzealous duty rather than a straight-up "jerk", ultimately, it's clear that he's trying to do what's best for the kingdom, as well as Orphanse and his own daughter. He may not show it much, but he does love them both, and considers their feelings.

A mysterious girl who appears before Euphyllia when she's pondering what she can do to save Anis [[spoiler:from her fate as queen]]. It turns out that Lumi is the ancestor of the current Palettia family, who has become an immortal, unaging being due to becoming a Spirit Contractor back when she was a princess.

* Really700YearsOld: Lumi looks around the same age as Anis, but she's far older given that she's her immortal ancestor. Sylphine remarks that Lumi looks exactly the same as she did when they first met decades ago.

* BrokenAce: A brilliant if somewhat eccentric inventor and one of the best adventurers in the kingdom, Anis nevertheless also has a lot of personal insecurities over being the black sheep of the royal family due to being unable to use magic, [[spoiler: as well as struggling with Imposter Syndrome over whether her reincarnating “killed” the original Anisphia.]]

* DeathOfPersonality: [[spoiler:Before Euphie told her differently, Anis believed that remembering her previous life resulted in the original Anis being erased.]]

* BetaCouple: Gets plenty of ShipTease with Laine, with their relationship becoming the secondary romantic plotline of the work.

* IHaveNoSon: Ilia was initially sent to serve the royal family by her power-hungry, aristocratic parents in the hopes that she'd eventually get married to a powerful noble. Her inability to do this, combined with being the personal maid of someone with Anis' reputation, eventually led to the two effectively disowning her. Ilia isn't particularly broken up about it and doesn't even bother using her family name most of the time.

* AmbiguouslyBi: After moving into Anis' villa she becomes extremely close with Ilia, to the point of being the BetaCouple to Anis and Euphie. On the other hand when questioned about her involvement in the Prince's public annulment she says she does genuinely like Algard, though she is aware that their vastly different stations make it impossible for them to ever be together. Even after Algard reveals his true self, Lainie says that while she will never forgive him for what he did, she believes that his kindness when they were alone was genuine and not just an act. Its hard to say if she was actually in love with Algard or if she was just lonely in general and became attached to the only person she thought was nice to her.

* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:Following his defeat, he appears to wish to atone for the crimes he committed. Before he is taken away, he requests that Euphie take care of his sister.]]
* BecameTheirOwnAntithesis: His hatred of the nobility system and its abuse of the common folk is all well and good; however, his bitterness at being look down upon and compared to Anis constantly has made him believe that the only way to truly change the system is to be a tyrant himself. Although, there are implications that this was due to the manipulations of Duke Chartreuse and other members of a highly conservative faction that fanatically reveres certain noble traditions, and looks down poorly on both of the royal children.

* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the PrinceCharming often seen in manga and games aimed at the ShoujoDemographic. Algard shares a lot of core character traits with the archetype, such as a desire to fix the social problems of his kingdom and a refusal to bend his will to the rules. He also shows how destructive those traits can be if allowed to become obsession. He hates his ArrangedMarriage for being something another person decided for him, and so he ends up also hating Euphie just for being his fiancee, even when she has done nothing wrong. His insistence in doing things based on what he thinks is right leads to political unrest as he breaks several rules and social norms with no regards for consequences. Finally, the knowledge that nobles won't just accept social reforms that bring more equality, mixed with his own InferioritySuperiorityComplex, leads to him concluding he must force his kingdom to be better, effectively mistaking being a tyrant for being a strong king.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Algard has [[spoiler:stewed in his hatred of his kingdom's classism and magic-centric elitism]] for so long that he doesn't understand why Anis can love magic, or why his family is trying to keep the kingdom's peace. His refusal to either understand his family's actions or to talk about his own feelings lead him to [[spoiler:participate in a coup attempt for the sake of tearing down the system]].
* TheExile: [[spoiler:After his defeat at the end of the second Volume, his co-conspirators are put to death while he is exiled to another region due to becoming a vampire, so he could be researched along with preventing any potential children he could have from tainting the royal family.]]
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:After being defeated by Anis, he submits himself to the king and queen and accepts his exile without any furthe resistance. Even when the queen blames herself for failing him as a mother, Algard denies this, claiming that all of his sins were his alone.]]

* HisOwnWorstEnemy: Despite his belief otherwise, he was in a great position before the start of the series, as he was next in-line to the throne, was engaged to TheAce and his talented sister still loved him and wanted to stay out of succession for his sake. However, his InferioritySuperiorityComplex makes him hate the girls just for being more liked than he is and convinces him nobody would follow him if he doesn't prove himself first. He puts his desire for recognition before everything else, while remaining blind to how selfish this is and deluding himself to believe he is making tough but necessary choices rather than communicating to others in a meaningful way. This sabotages his plan to make a better kingdom far more than anything his sister does.

* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: He spent years hearing everyone around him praising his sister for her inventions and talking about how she would be a great ruler if she had been born with magic. His main objective now is to prove he can be a great ruler too so he can escape from his sister's shadow.

* WellIntentionedExtremist: He hates the nobility system of the kingdom that allows nobles to oppress and abuse commoners, which is good. What is not good is the bitterness he has bottled up due to being looked down upon by nobles his entire life. It has convinced him nobody would follow him if he became king by the rules, so the only way for him to bring change is by enforcing his will through force.

* CallToAgriculture: Grantz mentions Orphanse originally wanted to become a farmer, but circumstances forced him to become king. [[spoiler:After he abdicates the throne in favor of Euphyllia, he's shown growing vegetables like he always wanted]].

* HonestAdvisor: The advice he gives to his king and others is honest. While he may have goals, they are never meant to be treacherous to others.

* CursedWithAwesome: After defeating a dragon, one of the most powerful beings in the setting, it uses the last of its power to "curse" Anis with magical knowledge, Anis herself questions if she had actually been cursed as using the knowledge the dragon gave her she is finally able to use magic.

* PowerTattoo: After killing the dragon, it gives her the knowledge of how to use its power witch involves having a large glyph tattooed to her back using the magicule of the dragon mixed with ink. The anime shows this was no easy process either as it had to be slowly and painstakingly done the old fashioned way to a needle brush tapping method.

* TragicKeepsake: PlayedWith as the flower hair decs she wears are a gift from Algard, and while she is deeply hurt by his actions, ultimately she decides to keep them as a reminder of the kind man he was when they were alone.

* SwappedRoles: At the beginning of the story, Anis was the one who was the flirty tease and made her attraction to Euphie clear while Euphie was shy and borderline uncomfortable to the point that Anis had to promise that she wouldn't do anything she didn't want her to. [[[spoiler:Fast forward to Volume 3 and beyond. Euphie proved to fall for Anis even harder when she is the one that is the more 'open' in their relationship, and Anis is the one that is shy.]]

* TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask: [[spoiler: After her right to the throne is forcibly reinstated following Algard's banishment, Anis starts acting a lot calmer and packs up a lot of {{Magitek}} research, recognising that she won't have the time for it once she assumes the throne.
