Astronomy Club

    In General
The main characters of the story.
  • Club Stub: Ryouta was the only member of the Astronomy Club, since the previous members all graduated. During his first year, there was only him and an upperclassman. Now there are more members in this club.
  • Cool Shades: With the exception of Kana (and Hatsuna, who wasn't introduced at that time), the others wear sunglasses to protect themselves from Nanami's power.
  • I Owe You My Life: The escaped Magic Users in general towards Ryouta due to all of his help in trying to let them live a somewhat normal life and protecting them as much as he can.
  • Japanese School Club: They are the Astronomy Club and the girls live in an observatory.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Generally Ryouta and the Magic Users try to keep as many people from finding out about their predicament as possible. Though he tells his uncle about them, it's because he needs the latter's help in making the pills the girls need to stay alive. And in Kikka's case, he asks the girls while they're at the beach in chapter 56 not to let her see them using their powers. Both Kana and Kotori end up accidentally doing so, mainly to prevent another girl from drowning, and Kikka gets teleported into the water with Kotori. When she wakes up later they play it off as her passing out from too much sun.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": In chapter 59/episode 11, Ryouta mentions the name "Valkyria". All of the girls immediately have this look on their face, and explain to him that Valkyria is extremely dangerous, killing people like insects and being able to utilize eight forms of magic. And she shows up in the observatory where the other girls are hiding at in the end of the chapter/episode.
  • New Transfer Student: Neko is the first who transfers to Ryouta's class. She is later joined by Kazumi shortly afterwards. Coincidently, Kotori transfers to their school at the same time as Kazumi, but Kotori is a class below them. As of the second part of the story, Hatsuna transfers to Ryouta's class as well, while Kana transfers to Kitsuka's school.
  • Pretty Freeloaders: Kana, Kuroha, and Kazumi all move into the observatory where Ryouta's Astronomy club meets in episode 4. They're forced to move there after Kuroha accidentally burns down the house she and Kana were staying in. And in Kazumi's case, her hideout was also getting torn down, so transfers to his school and applies for the club to make it less suspicious if she's seen going in and out of it everyday. Kotori also ends up joining them in episode 6 after Ryouta convinces her it's better to move there than to continue living where her friend died. And then Hatsuna joins in.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Why the girls are largely attracted to Ryouta. He doesn't treat them differently than other people, and often goes out of his way to help them when he can. The fact that he's also a good looking guy helps out as well, especially with Kuroha and Kazumi.
  • Take a Third Option: In episode 9, Ryouta asks the girls what to do about Nanami after she finds out where they're hiding. He tells them they can either fight her, or run away to a new hiding place. But Kuroha doesn't like either option, and he agrees with her. This helps to confirm what he said to her earlier about wanting to befriend her since she didn't attack him out of the blue like other witches such as Kikako and Saori did. Unfortunately she's remotely ejected shortly after joining them, though she transfers her consciousness into his mind before dying, and wiping out the girl's memory of her to avoid her death being a burden to them.
  • They Would Cut You Up: Why Ryouta and the escaped magic users don't simply go public? Ryouta claims they would simply end up back on the experiment table. Which is odd considering the lengths the antagonists themselves go to to keep ordinary people finding out about the magic users, but then, if the central conflict could be resolved that easily, there would be no story. He also overhears Kuroha telling Kana that if he did try to befriend her, they'd go after him too. Despite that, Ryouta still takes the risk of trying to befriend her and the other witches he runs into.
  • Transfer Student Uniforms: All of the girls wear apparently hand-made school uniforms that don't match the regular ones.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Securing more pills. Particularly when it comes to getting Kogorou to manufacture more. The attempt to reverse manufacture them comes with the clause that it will either be doable within a month or take at least half a year, and it turns out it will take the longer period of time. The second attempt he finds information that lets him pull it off in a month, but by the time he comes across the means to do this, there are only enough pills to last everyone a week. When they do solve their medicine problems, it turns out that all of the girls will inevitably hatch anyways.

    Ryōta Murakami

Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka, Rina Sato (as a child) (Japanese), Blake Shepard (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/murakami_ryouta.png

The protagonist of the series, a brilliant high-school student aiming to become a NASA researcher. Still tormented by the death of his childhood friend, a girl named "Kuroneko", which he blames himself for, he wants to prove the existence of aliens as an atonement to her. This makes Neko Kuroha's sudden appearance all the more disturbing to him.

Soon enough, Ryouta finds himself taking care of Kuroha and other Magic Users out of kindness and a desire to never again fail in protecting a friend.

  • Above the Influence: Because of his still unforgotten childhood crush, Ryouta doesn't try to make any moves on the girls, even after Kazumi's successive teasing and attempting to get into his pants.
  • Accidental Kiss: Ryouta has one of these in chapter 65. Kazumi was actually going to try and force him into having sex with her, but in the end chickens out from even kissing him. She tries to leave the park, but he says they should stay a little bit since they just got there. She then trips and they accidentally kiss before tumbling down the hill together.
  • Accidental Pervert: Occasionally. Not helped at all by his difficulties in understanding women.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Ryouta grovels before Ichijiku and Valkyria in episode 12. It's a distraction, so Hatsuna can sneak up behind to push on Valkyria's eject button. Unfortunately, Valkyria's Harness looks completely different than the normal ones, and the plan fails.
  • Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: Strongly implied in chapter 181. After his Heroic Sacrifice, Ryouta's conscience was left trapped inside the Edda and his soul will likely remain wandering the Earth for the next million years. Fortunately, Kuroneko and someone else join him so he doesn't have to be alone.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Ryouta figures out the abilities of most assassin magic users very quickly, and abuses their weaknesses to defeat them.
  • Badass Boast: "They may have AAA rank witches, but they don't have me." Wow.
  • Badass Normal: Armed with only his Photographic Memory, Ryouta has proved himself time and again to be as dangerous as the Magi cians that he and the girls must fight off on a frequent basis to stay alive to the point that he is the defacto strategist that comes with up with the plans that save the day.
  • Bash Brothers: With Takaya. They have a Brains and Brawn dynamic.
  • Berserk Button: Kissing Kuroha in front of him doesn't save Machina from Ryouta's kick in the face.
  • Blank White Eyes: Ryouta displays some in chapter 55, after placing second place in test scores at school. Kuroha places first, and he begins to recall that Kuroneko did well on tests too. He wonders if Kuroha would also be quite intelligent were it not for her constantly losing her memories due to her witch powers.
  • Brains and Brawn: He's the Brain to Kuroha and Takaya's Brawn.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Kuroha/Kuroneko.
  • Club President: Of the astronomy club.
  • Cursed with Awesome: How Ryouta views his Photographic Memory at times. He wishes there were certain things he could forget, such as the death of his friend Kuroneko. However, Kuroha tells him that having not being able to forget is much better than not being able to remember.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's the Only Sane Man, so he snarks a lot.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father and his little brother died in an accident when he was two. The biggest twist in an arc of twists is that this is a lie: his father leads Vingulf and his brother is Machina.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: When he sees Kotori in a bikini. This causes Kuroha to ask him what he's looking after a while.
  • Distressed Dude: In chapter 166 he's kidnapped by the lab so he can be made into a Sorcerian.
  • Dynamic Entry: Ryouta does one in chapter 83, flying in feet first to kick Ichijiku in the head in his attempt to save Kuroha from Valkyria. Considering this is used in all three of Lynn Okamoto's manga series (including being in the same direction and being a full double page), this may also count as a Signature Style.
  • Enemy Mine: Ryouta is forced to work with Hexenjagd in order to stop Ichijiku's twisted planto awaken "Grane" the life form in Kotori, which is capable of destroying all humans in chapter 79/episode 12. They sweeten the deal by promising to give him the formula to create the death suppressant pills he sorely needs for his friends.
  • Expy: Though he's in the same protagonist role as Kouta, Ryouta has a more complex personality, is more involved in the plot, and actively causes the story and events to change. He also visually resembles Yuka and Nono.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Aphrodite specifically tells him that he'll be lucky if he simply dies slowly in chapter 163, as opposed to his, yet unstated, true fate.
  • First Kiss: Ryouta has his first lip to lip one in chapter 63, by Hatsuna, a witch they just met recently, and whom he went through a lot of trouble to help save from her "accident" of climbing up a tower and "slipping". He thinks to himself that it wasn't bad, but hated that it was in front of Kuroha, who also wasn't happy to see that.
  • Guile Hero: Most of the magicians in Murakami's group are relatively low on the power scale, meaning that a majority of their conflicts can't be solved through brute force alone. Instead, he resolves them through elaborate plans, taking advantage of the individual abilities of each of the girls. As a result, he's accomplished things like allying with Hexanjagd and ensuring that they have a constant supply of death suppressant pills.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Chapter 165 reveals that he's Machina's "back-up," ie, he's also a Chimera.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Ryouta gets this treatment from Saori, but she's forced to revert time back a minute due to him stabbing her in the heart prior to getting killed.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • Subverted twice in chapters 72 and 73/episode 12. Ryouta pushes Kuroha out of the way of Valkyria's attack, but gets fatally injured in the process. Though his heart stops beating, Hatsuna attempts to heal him, and melts in the process. However, due to her Healing Factor, while she's in a melted state, she is still alive, albeit hung up so she can't heal herself at that point. And Ryouta survives as well.
    • Does this again in chapter 180 by sacrificing himself to Loki to stop his rampage.
  • Humanoid Abomination: After his Heroic Sacrifice on Loki, Ryouta comes back as this.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: To Saori. For more, see her entry.
  • Indirect Kiss: Two instances are brought up or occur in episode 10:
    • Ryouta does one with Kazumi when she has him try a sample of her food at the maid cafe in Akihabara in episode 7. She later brings this up in episode 10, claiming to have kissed him. Kuroha doesn't take this too well, and a tree branch somehow breaks off and smashes the table they were using. When Kazumi tells Ryouta more specifics about it, the main trunk then also smashes down near where he was at. Kuroha later runs off and is seen singing that she doesn't care about who kisses who, and that an indirect kiss isn't a real kiss.
    • Later, Ryouta offers her a bottle of water he had on him after she complains about being thirsty. It then occurs to her after taking a sip that he also drank from it, and realizes she also just indirectly kissed him.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Ryouta is on the receiving end of this when Nanami tries to erase all of his memories, but it's revealed later that her power doesn't work on him due to his eidetic memory.
  • Last-Name Basis: The girls call him by his last name, and he calls Neko by her last name.
  • The Leader: Type I, II and IV for the team. If he's not there, the chance of success would decrease to 10%.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Kazumi states she would rather die than having to live on without Ryouta.
  • Loophole Abuse: Kana says she foresees Kuroha's death when she tries to get more pills in episode 3. After Ryouta makes up his mind to save her, Kana also foresees his death as well. Saori does in fact kill Kuroha in episode 3, then she also kills Ryouta. But because he stabbed her in the heart, she's forced to use her magic to rewind time back a minute, lest she also dies. Fortunately for the heroes, using said spell uses up a lot of her magic, and she's easily caught and tied up after using it. So Kana wasn't wrong, but she also didn't foresee Saori having to turn back time, in essence saving the two in the process.
  • Love Confession: Ryouta gives one to Kuroha in chapter 95 as he attempts to press one of Kuroha's Harness buttons.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Machina is his brother, his dad is in charge of the lab experimenting on girls, and now that Machina is gone he's been kidnapped by his dad so he can instead act as the Adam of a new generation of humankind.
  • Lust Object: Kazumi becomes really obsessed with getting to have sex with Ryouta.
  • Manly Tears: Ryouta displays some in the first opening of the anime. He also does it in chapter 70/episode 11 when he sees the moles on Kuroha's breast, and confirms without a doubt that she is his childhood friend, even though she doesn't remember her past due to her powers.
  • Morality Chain: Ryouta has been acting as one for the Magic Users he's saved.
  • Morton's Fork: Ryouta is presented with one by Kogorou in chapter 68. They can probably make more pills within a month due to some new information he received. Unfortunately they only have 42 pills left, and now there are 5 girls that have to share it. So he can either save one girl, or they would all die within a week if they kept taking pills together.
  • My Skull Runneth Over: In chapter 164, Aphrodite explains to Ryouta that the capacity of a person's brain is fixed and that there is a balance of what is remembered and forgotten. As Ryouta is unable to forget anything, this causes his brain to exceed it storage limit and it to suspend its functions, taking a toll and even killing off his brain.
  • Not a Date: Kazumi teases Ryouta about this in episode 7 when she goes with him to Akihabara and acts the part of a girlfriend. But he tells her that it's not a date and she's not his girlfriend. Despite that, they do end up doing date-like things, such as going to a maid cafe.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: In episode 9, he suddenly enters the hot spring to warn the girls from an assassin, despite him knowing that they are bathing in it. Of course, the girls are scared by this, but he completely ignores them and says "There is no time for this" with totally serious face (it's not even red). In the manga, he says "Shut up! You're [bathing] too slow!" instead.
  • The One Guy: The only male main character.
  • Only Sane Man: Being in a group with abnormal empowered girls, it's not a surprise.
  • Photographic Memory: Ryouta might have Hyperthymesia, or at least something similar to the condition, as he never forgets anything. He's able to recall a day's events down to minute details, and has also displayed highly keen observation and deduction skills. For example, one part has him trying to remember writing in German from a building; he remembered the entire thing at 100% accuracy in the span of a few minutes. It also makes him immune to memory wipes.
  • Power at a Price: As explained in Chapter 163, his extreme Photographic Memory is actually a byproduct of him being reconstructed following the fall at the dam with Kuroneko. Unfortunately, the tradeoff of the reconstruction is that his lifespan has been severely limited.
  • Reused Character Design: Ryouta is the most obvious example of this series. He's one of the many characters who share the design of Rie from Flip Flap. Ryouta's predecessors are Waiko (after her hair cut) from Lime Yellow, Sera Wyoming from Elfenlied, Kasumi from Digitopolis, Yuka from Elfen Lied, and Nono Nonomiya from Nononono. What makes Ryouta unique is the fact that he's male.
  • Screw Destiny: Ryouta has this outlook when Kuroha tells him about his future in the first episode. If not for her timely arrival, he would have died.
  • Secret-Keeper: He's forced to do this a couple of times for different situations:
    • The first is he can't reveal the witches out of fear that Vingulf would then track them down and kill them.
    • He goes through a second one in chapter 113, when Kana tells him not to reveal to the other girls about the Drasil hatching, due to the possibility that they may eject themselves to avoid such a fate, especially Kuroha. Though they were warned by Hexenjagd that this could happen, it took a witch actually hatching for them to believe it. He later tells Kazumi and the others that Kana was merely attacked by other witches and was saved by Hexenjagd.
  • The Smart Guy: Other than being brilliant in school, he often manages to quickly elaborate effective plans to take down the Magic User assassins, and understands Nanami's ability in (literally) the blink of an eye.
  • The Strategist: Ryouta is able to form decent plans fairly quickly based on what he knows about the witches he's up against. Against Saori, he stabs her in the heart to force her to use her time rewind ability to reverse time, which also cripples her due to the immense power needed for that. And against Kikako he at first was going to have Kuroha distract her until he could get behind the former to hit her Harness. But when he sees Kotori tying herself up and planning to switch places with Kuroha, he instead has her switch places with Kikako instead so they could immobilize her. It works spectacularly.
  • Survivor's Guilt: Ryouta is traumatized by the accident he had with Kuroneko years earlier when they fell off a pipe while traversing a dam. As a result, he vows to find the existence of aliens for his friend, and has trouble associating with girls as a result.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: In episode 7, Kuroha steps out of the room briefly at the karaoke bar to use the bathroom, but runs into Ryouta. He claims he's not there to see her, and was just going to sing alone.
  • Taking the Bullet: Well, it's not a gunshot, but Ryouta does this for Kuroha in chapter 71/episode 12 when he pushes her out of Valkyria's attack and gets hit by it.
  • Techno Babble: Ryouta's explanation of RSAnote  and the processes within organic chemistrynote  leaves a lot to be desired.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • In the first episode of the anime, Kuroha warns Ryouta at first to catch the last bus near the observatory, but then tells him not to catch it and to instead stay where he's at already for the night. He says that the weather should be clear, only to then have it start raining. And he also decides to leave and deliberately miss the last bus, figuring he probably wouldn't be a victim of a crime in such a remote location. He then wonders what could happen locally, then notices a mudslide coming down on him, which also traps him while a giant boulder falls.
    • In chapter 59, as Ryouta is told about how dangerous Valkyria is, he says that they haven't been found out yet, so they should be safe. Then he's told one of the magics they can use is to track down other witches. One of the walls suddenly explode and Valkyria, who also looks suspiciously like Kuroha, is seen demanding their pills.
    • In episode 10, after Ryouta checks on Kuroha while she's singing by herself, he tries to leave quietly so she wouldn't notice his presence. Then he accidentally kicks over a nearby can...
    • In chapter 160, after being extorted into engaging in Romantic Spoon Feeding with Aprhodite, Ryouta has an internal monologue about how horrible it would be if the witches show up at that moment. Guess what happens on the next page.
  • Thanks for the Mammaries: Ryouta accidentally does this to Kuroha in episode 4. Due to the distraction, he realizes moments later that he didn't check to see if she has the moles on her chest like her old friend Kuroneko.
  • Together in Death: In the final chapter, Kuroneko joins him inside the Edda so their souls can be together forever.
  • Token Human: The girls around him are not human anymore (at least not biologically).
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Chapter 162 would suggest this. After "Aprhodite" tells him he doesn't have much time left, he begins showing the same symptoms that a witch does before she's about to hatch.
  • Too Dumb to Live: In the first chapter/episode, but subverted. Ryouta didn't give a damn about losing his life just to get the proof if Neko was saying the truth.
  • Unwanted Harem: In the straightest way possible. Ryouta doesn't want more girls to be in danger, and every new girl just adds too many problems to the mix. Especially since every new addition to the group strains the limited number of pills needed to keep the girls alive.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Has this kind of dynamic with Takaya.
  • Wham Line: One occurs in episode 7, when the girls ask Ryouta if the guy he took the pill to can recreate the pills for them. He pauses for a moment, and then says they can't. Despite that, Kuroha says they should keep trying for future witches who may escape, and Kazumi goes outside to cry.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: His reaction to Neko and Kotori being hanged up after they wasted their magic for unnecessary things in the same day when Kogorou wants to see their magic abilities. Since the magic of these two girls looks more believable than Kazumi's whose magic looks just like hacking and Kana being not able to control visions, Neko and Kotori really screw up and almost causes the loss of Kogorou's support and trust on Ryouta. Thanks to Kana's vision, the girls get a new chance.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Chapter 163 reveals that Ryouta had been reconstructed after falling from the dam with Kuroneko. Unfortunately the side effect was that his life-span has been shortened. It also explains his "Memory that never forgets" ability.

    Neko Kuroha

Voiced by: Risa Taneda (Japanese), Jamie Marchi (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kuroha_neko.png

The Deuteragonist, this girl is the spitting image of Kuroneko, Ryota's childhood friend whom he was in love with. She registered to his prestigious high-school despite being barely able to read and claiming to have never met him, just so she could save him from an accidental death. Her psychic powers allow her to destroy any object within her field of vision, but it doesn't work on living beings. In the very end of the first manga volume and episode 3, it's revealed that she is in fact Kuroneko.

  • Action Girl: The only female main character who has fighting abilities. And she's the ones who fights the villain magicians.
  • All-Loving Heroine: Incredibly helpful, compassionate and selfless. She risks herself for her friends, goes to extreme lengths to help strangers and is willing to forgive her enemies.
  • Back from the Dead: In chapter 170, Ryouta presses the button that makes a witch melt and then Neko starts to die and is subsequently eaten by Loki, and then she comes out from him like it was nothing.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • At the very beginning of the series, Neko saves Ryouta from being crushed by giant rock.
    • Ryouta is rescued from an arrest in episode 8 when Kuroha and Kotori show up to save him, using the info that Kazumi obtained from him as far as where he was going that day.
  • Book Dumb: Played straight at first. Kuroha is unable to do simple multiplication despite being in the same class as Ryouta. He is understandably baffled at how she's even in that school if she can't do math. She also can't read very well either, and he tells her that her cover is going to get blown if she's trying to blend in this way. However, she's later seen doing a complex math problem in class, and Ryouta mentions how amazingly fast she picked up on high school subjects. Kana mentions later that Kuroha loses some of her memories when she uses her spells.
  • Blank Slate: What essentially happens when she's finished with her real personality. Due to the weird way it works, every time she uses her main powers (i.e., her third button), after she hangs up, she gets reset to the point when she doesn't remember anything except some basic things. Saving the experiences, however, is nonexistent.
  • The Caretaker: She is the one who takes care of the various needs of the physically paralyzed Kana, such as feeding her and taking her to the bathroom.
  • Cassandra Truth: Kuroha tells Ryouta various things, such as not to miss the last bus, but then later tells him to stay at the observatory. Naturally he doesn't exactly believe her, and wonders what could possibly happen in the rain out in a remote road near a mountain. Then a mudslide occurs...
  • Cast from Hit Points: Kana explains to Ryouta that Kuroha loses some of her memories anytime she has to use her powers. Which goes with what she said in the previous episode when Ryouta complained about not being able to forget certain things, and she tells him it's better than not being able to remember them. It is also implied that if not for this problem Neko would be ranked at a higher level of power and destruction.
  • Chekhov's Gun: After the Valkyria arc, she loses her memories again, and acts very cold towards Ryouta. Though she sees a journal she wrote, she ignores it until chapter 138. In it, she wrote details on the other characters, such as Kazumi liking Ryouta. She seems indifferent at first, but then when she reaches the section on Ryouta, she has various love symbols and words written in it, and breaks down crying, as she can't recall any of those feelings, yet wrote to herself not to forget them.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Ryouta.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: She registered in a high-school to save two people she didn't know and thought she would never see again. If you tell her someone is in danger and she can do something, she will try to save them at all costs. And yes, she made her own super-hero song about herself.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: After developing feelings for Ryouta, she often subconsciously destroys things with her power without meaning to when other girls, mainly Kazumi, get too close to him.
  • Clothing Damage: Kuroha suffers some during her fight with Saori. Aside from the obvious Fanservice, this also allows Ryouta to see the three moles his friend Kuroneko had, and he then realizes she was still alive. At least until Saori turns her into a bloody mess. Saori later reverts time to before she killed Kuroha, and subsequently before Ryouta saw it, so he's still unaware of it until he sees them later again.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander:
    Ryouta: "TWO TIMES TWO?!"
    Kuroha: "A squirrel?"
  • Cursed with Awesome: Neko's ability allows her to destroy objects at the cost of losing memories.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Contrasting heavily with Valkyria's Light Is Not Good.
  • Deflector Shield: One of Kuroneko's powers. It can withstand Valkyria's beams.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She's first cold to Ryouta, but eventually warms up to him and becomes very close to him. This is until she lost her memories about him again.
  • Deuteragonist: The main female heroine and the second protagonist.
  • Distinguishing Mark: She has Kuroneko's three moles near her left armpit. Ryōta only fails to notice them because of her body growing up and the moles changing places. He does notice them at some point, but forgets about it soon after because Saori rewinded time to before it happened.
  • Dissonant Serenity: As Kuroneko she's only got two modes. A silly grin, and a grim scowl.
  • Doesnt Know Her Own Strength: When Ryouta challenges Kuroha to an arm wrestling contest, she easily defeats him. However, she slams his hand rather hand onto the table, as he's wincing in pain afterwards. He then gropes her arm and wonders how she managed to do that.
  • The Dreaded: Valkyria seems to be quite afraid of Kuroha when they first meet, and she ends up not attacking everyone in the observatory as a result. Kuroha later confirms that she's even more powerful than the former, though it takes quite a bit to stop her, and she loses her memories again after their long fight.
  • Everyone Can See It: After Kuroha accidentally shoots down a boy, her friend tells her that the reason she feels uneasy when Ryouta touches her hand is because she likes him. The camera then pans along several of the other guys and girls present, showing the rejected guy looking down, and the others snickering at how innocent she is.
  • Expy: To Lucy of Elfen Lied, although mostly from a storytelling perspective as opposed to personality. Neko has a power that spontaneously destroys objects, similar to how Lucy's power involves spontaneous dismemberment (among other things) of the human body. Both are feared in-universe for being extraordinary powerful members of their respective species. Both have to deal with Laser-Guided Amnesia due to combat-related scenarios (a bullet for Lucy, and a superpower disability for Neko). Both are childhood friends of the male lead (Kouta for Lucy and Ryouta for Neko), who have to deal with the other part of the pair being unable to remember them for a good while (although it's reversed in this case, ala Kouta for Lucy and Neko for Ryouta). Both have Clingy Jealous Girl issues regarding the man they love (although it's so much less violent for Neko than it is for Lucy). The biggest difference (other than Lucy being the main character as opposed to the Deuteragonist like Neko), is that Neko is normally a very pleasant person from the get-go, despite some aforementioned Clingy Jealous Girl problems, whereas Lucy was a straight-up Byronic Hero. The closest Neko and Lucy have ever been in personality is when Neko develops a cold shoulder towards Ryouta upon forgetting her memories as Kuroha as well as Kuroneko, and even then, that's incredibly minor compared to Lucy's epic Sugar-and-Ice Personality. On the other hand, her appearance is very similar to Kumiko's sans ponytail, The Heroine of Okamoto's one-shot Allumage.
  • First-Name Basis: To all other Magic Users. Kuroneko calls Ryouta by his first name in contrast to Neko.
  • Flight: One of Kuroneko's abilities.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: She is Ryouta's childhood friend Kuroneko, but because of the memory loss caused by her powers, she doesn't remember him.
  • Global Ignorance: She doesn't know that Germany is a country at the other side of the world until Machina explains it to her.
  • Go Through Me: Kuroha does this for Kana in a Flash Back during chapter 94, when some guards seemed to want to kill the latter. This is why Kana does what she can to help her out, such as with her foresight powers.
  • Gravity Master: Neko seems to display either this or a form of telekinesis, as she smashes Ryouta with a shelf in episode 5. Kuroneko is able to create micro black holes.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: Kuroha tries to state this regarding Ryouta to Kana, Kazumi, and Kotori. She says he's only interested in helping her because she looks like his childhood friend that died. But later chapters in the manga show she is interested in him, and doesn't like seeing other girls make moves on him, whether it's just flirting or even kissing him.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Kuroha gets one in chapter 95 after Ryouta presses the top button on her Harness. It works, and she regains her memories as Kuroneko as well, as she has no idea who Kuroha is.
  • Hypocrite: Kuroha tells Nanami not to take any risky moves in removing the beacon from her Harness because if they were to die then everyone would be sad. The problem with Kuroha saying this is that she is a Martyr Without a Cause.
  • Indirect Kiss: See Ryouta's entry above.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Along with Kotori, who often strip down in their underwear due to it being really hot in the observatory.
  • Kamehame Hadouken: Kuroneko can fire beams from her hands.
  • The Lancer: To Ryouta. She's the only girl with offensive magic powers, has a close, but dynamic relationship with Ryouta.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Everytime Kuroha uses her powers, she loses a part of her memory.
  • Last-Name Basis: She calls Ryouta by his last name. Kuroneko doesn't.
  • Love Epiphany: In episode 4, Kuroha says she feels hot and uneasy after Ryouta accidentally gropes her in the bath. She thinks she may have caught a cold. By episode 7, Kana pretty much points this out to her. Kuroha even wonders why she feels uneasy when touching Ryouta's hand, but doesn't feel anything when she touches a random boy's hand at the karaoke joint.
  • Love Hurts: Kuroha isn't happy to see other girls hitting on Ryouta, such as Kazumi. In later chapters of the manga, she often goes outside and tries to sing that whatever she saw happen with him doesn't bother her, though it's pretty obvious she's not happy about it. And in chapter 67 she runs back to her old hiding place in the abandoned village after seeing Kazumi kiss Ryouta. She also wonders why seeing Kazumi around Ryouta makes her heart ache despite forgetting who he was a couple of times.
  • Luminescent Blush: Kuroha displays these occasionally.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: In the beginning of episode 3, Kuroha shows up to school in a lot of bandages. When Ryouta inquires what happened, she simply claims she had a cold. Kuroha later explains they have to take a death suppressant pill every 30 hours or they'll start bleeding, and after 35 hours their internal organs melt and they die. She was attempting to wait until the last minute to take them, but as Ryouta finds out after the opening credits, she took too long this time and was on the floor bleeding.
  • Malaproper: Because she's so unfamiliar with a normal life she tends to mishear words or casually use terms she doesn't understand.
  • Martyr Without a Cause: Her Chronic Hero Syndrome goes to the extreme that she is willing to sacrifice herself in an instant. Kuroha also makes no attempts to avoid her death if Kana predicts it. This constantly forces Ryōta to save Kuroha's life while preventing other casualties.
  • Meaningful Name: Kuroneko means black cat. Given how unlucky the character is, it's a fitting name.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She suffers some Clothing Damage in episode 3, and then goes into the hot springs with Kazumi, not realizing Ryouta was using it at the time.
  • Mysterious Transfer Student: Kuroha's arrival sets the whole plot in motion.
  • Never Found the Body: While Ryouta was told Kuroneko was killed in the accident at the dam, he never got to see her body for himself. Hence why when Kuroha shows up and bears a striking resemblance to her, he can't help but think that it's his old friend, despite her claiming she's not Kuroneko. When Kuroha suffers some Clothing Damage in episode 3, he is able to see the three moles near her chest, and realizes Kuroha is Kuroneko. But this part is undone thanks to Saori turning time back a minute, to before he was able to verify it.
  • Nice Girl: She's a cheerful, compassionate, and loyal young lady. Despite some shortcomings, she's still a good person at heart.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Kuroha attempts to boil some water in episode 3, but causes the house to catch on fire instead. Worse, the death suppressant pills they were supposed to take every 30 hours also burned up, and Kana's last dose was yesterday. She starts bleeding from her mouth, but tells Kuroha not to worry about it.
  • Nose Bleed: Kuroha suffers one at the end of episode 2. Episode 3 reveals they have to take death suppressant pills every 30 hours, or they'll start bleeding, and after 35 hours, their internal organs melt and they'll die.
  • Not So Above It All: Ryouta catches Kuroha singing to herself in episode 2 when he tries to find out her address to give her some paperwork from school.
  • Oblivious to Love: She doesn't realize Ryouta's feelings for her and doesn't understand her own feelings for him. Hatsuna starts pressing on this issue quite a bit when she shows up in the later chapters of the manga. However, for several of the girls it's an important subject to them because their lack of pills means they may only have days to live at best, if they aren't killed outright by the organization they escaped from first.
  • Out of Focus: After the Valkyria arc in the manga, she barely has any presence as the next arcs focus on Kana and Hatsuna respectively.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Kuroha and Kana are hiding in an abandoned village, and have no money to buy food or other basic necessities. So when Ryouta shows up with some food and cake, both girls are ecstatic about it.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Delivered by, of all people Kuroneko after she regains her memories while fighting off against her sister Mako, also known as Valkyria.
Valkyria: "Go ahead, attack me if it pleases you. But if you continue to attack me and cause yourself to hang up, I'm going to seize that chance and kill you no matter how much you cry or apologize."
Kuroha: (reawakened as Kuroneko) "Onee-chan, it'll be boring if I don't fight against you with a handicap like that."
  • Red Herring: Regarding the numbers to refer to the witches. For a long while the reader naturally assumes that #1107 refers to Neko. It's actually Kotori.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue for Kotori's Red.
  • Screw Destiny: Kuroha also tries to prevent people from dying if she can do anything about it. While some of her interventions require some rather brute force, such as saving Ryouta from a giant boulder, others are a little more vague as to how to resolve it, such as the woman in red that they bump into on the way to save a woman in red from getting hit by a car in episode 2. At first they thought they were too late when they saw the crashed car, but Ryouta realizes that minor incident earlier delayed the lady enough that she wasn't in the path of the car as Kana had foresaw, thus indirectly saving her life.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Both her and Kazumi are interested in Ryouta, and he's generally the only guy they will talk to for an extended period of time, much to the chagrin of his male classmates.
  • Smarter Than You Look: She may seem totally clueless at times, but Ryōta notes that it's just because she never studied, certainly not because she is stupid. And long and behold, after a few months at school she goes from being unable to read kanji to top of the class!
  • Spit Take: Kuroha does one in chapter 122 after drinking the iced coffee Takaya pays for, but leaves before taking a sip of it.
  • Split Personality: Kuroha and Kuroneko are two different personalities. Unlike Lucy/Nyu, they don't constantly switch with each other.
  • Superpower Lottery: Kuroneko has greater magic powers than Valkyria.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: In a Flash Back at the beginning of episode 2, Ryouta asks Kuroneko if she's looking forward to going to the beach on a field trip. She says she isn't, but he immediately calls her out on wearing an inflatable tube while stargazing.
  • Sweet Tooth: To the point that she cries when Ryouta tells her that the cake she is going to keep is actually for him (he gives it to her because of this).
  • Taking the Bullet: Takes a knife to the chest that was meant for Ryouta, which was shot by Valkyria, echoing the beginning of the arc when Ryouta takes Valkyria's attack for her.
  • Teleportation Spam: Kuroneko uses her instant teleportation a lot during the battle with Valkyria.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Kuroha does one in episode 5 as she helplessly watches Shino, one of the witches that escaped with her, get partially vaporized by Kikako.
  • Together in Death: In the final chapter, she decides to go inside the Edda in order reunite with Ryouta's soul and stay with him forever.
  • Transfer Student Uniforms: Because Kuroha never attended school, she wears a self-made uniform.
  • Tsundere: To Ryouta after she loses her memories about him again. She is now colder and harsher to him after hearing that Kazumi is apparently dating him (which is lie). Even though she claims not to stand him, deeply she is still in love with him.
  • Undead Tax Exemption: Kuroha can only attend school because she knows a very skillful hacker (Kazumi). On top of that, nobody there seems to bat an eye that her outfit isn't the girl's standard school uniform.
  • Unknowingly in Love: Kuroha clearly has feelings for Ryouta, but does not understand what they are. When her hand is held by another guy in episode 7, she questions why her heart isn't beating fast like it does when she touches Ryouta's hand. She also seems a little uneasy when other girls get a little too close to him.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: She is able to destroy everything, but humans (and Magic Users). However, Neko is not good at using her magic in combat and she's just terrible. Averted with Kuroneko, who is not only much stronger, but also skilled.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: As Kuroneko.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Neko's personality return to Kuroneko not only doesn't last, it actually erases all the previous memories she made as her other self, too!
  • You Are Number 6: Number 7620.

    Kana Tachibana

Voiced by: Aya Suzaki (Japanese), Christina Stroup (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tachibana_kana.png

A girl whom Neko escaped with during their transfer from the lab. She ended up completely paralyzed by all the experiments on her, but in exchange gained the power to foresee people's deaths so that they can be prevented. Since only her left hand can move, she uses it to communicate with a small vocal machine. And she has quite a gift of the gab.

  • A-Cup Angst: When Kana is protesting that Ryouta, while he carries her out of a burning building, is just using the opportunity to grope her, he says that she doesn't have anything up there anyway. She doesn't like that remark. Fortunately, she has growth spurt and has now bigger breasts.
  • And I Must Scream: Downplayed example. Kana can only move her fingers a bit to type on her keyboard to communicate. She does, however, scream whenever her food gets put in a blender. It is suggested that she can move, but doesn't as it will for some reason upset Neko. She does move, at the cost of losing her foresight.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Well, she doesn't get dismembered, but her legs get badly broken fighting the Drasil in the hospital. Despite the intense pain, she manages to stay awake long enough to delay the Drasil until some help arrives to kill it. She passes out from the pain after the Drasil is killed, but fortunately Hatsuna is able to heal her legs.
  • Badass Adorable: After regaining the ability to move, this cute doll-like girl becomes someone who won't hesitate to try to slash your throat.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Neko and Ryouta are cornered by Valkyria, Kana sneaks up behind her and stabs her with a knife.
  • The Big Girl: Since the second part, thanks to her reability to move. Kana trains herself in fighting, using knives and hammers and probably other weapons to protect the others.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Kana starts to do this after Kuroha explains to Ryouta about their "death suppressant" pills. She mentions that if they don't take the pills every 30 hours or so, they'll start to bleed. And after 35 hours, their internal organs start to melt and they die.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Kana gets her legs crushed while fighting the awakened Drasil in chapter 111 attempting to save Rin from it. She gets better thanks to Hatsuna's healing.
  • Brought Down to Badass: After her Power Limiter is removed, she is able to move around again. Unfortunately, she is also unable to foresee future events anymore as well. At first, her body is rather fragile due to not having used her muscles in a long time, but after some training, she becomes the second member of the group with fighting abilities.
  • Brutal Honesty: When she has to say something, she doesn't chew her words.
  • Cassandra Truth: In chapter 109, when she tells Kitsuka that she's a witch, the latter doesn't believe her, and demands some kind of proof. Unfortunately Kana can't use her abilities while moving around, so can't do anything. Fortunately Rurumi, a witch who was following her with two other girls, provides the proof Kitsuka wanted, and tosses her into the air with her Voodoo Doll in a fit of jealousy at the seemingly normal life Kana seems to be having.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Often and repeatedly, in a way that contrasts with her appearance.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Kana has some very useful foresight, but suffers from near-full body paralysis. She gives up her power in order to save Neko and Murakami from Valkyria.
  • Discard and Draw: She soon regains another foresight ability. It lasts longer and is more precise than her original, but she hangs up after using it once.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: In chapter 106, after Murakami gives a heartwarming speech to Kana, he then mentions not having to take her to the bathroom anymore. She immediately tries to stab him, and then chases after him, attempting to hurt him to make him forget about those incidents.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: She wears a gothic lolita dress that makes her look like a doll.
  • Expy: Of Mariko from Elfen Lied because of Kana's fringe and her disability. The author seems to be aware of it, considering how he designed Kana's character card.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: In chapter 144, she goes into the cafe the other girls are working at. An older lady is also there sitting behind them, and Ryouta hears her talking about looking for her sister and mentioning a screen capture of Kana at a recent hospital incident back in chapter 111. However, when Kana serves the lady a drink, she tells the girl to buzz off without looking at her, angering Kana in the process. A short while later she leaves with her associate, but forgets her bag and goes back in to get it. Subverted once the lady gets a good look at Kana, she immediately recognizes her as her younger sister.
  • Frozen Face: Because of her paralyzed physical condition, she can't make facial expressions. The only way to know how she feels is by what she types in her vocal machine.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Chapter 152.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers one in chapter 114 after the incident at the hospital involving an awakened Drasil, along with several magicians getting killed there. Made much worse by the fact that Kikka, a Muggle, witnessed all of that happening.
  • Hidden Buxom: Downplayed, since she hasn't big breasts to begin with. Kana looks flatter than Kazumi, but she has actually B-cups, which are bigger than Kazumi's A-cups. Not so hidden anymore since her growth spurt and having bigger breasts now.
  • I Got Bigger: Since she regained her ability to move she has become taller. Now in the second part of the series, she is not only taller, but has bigger breasts.
  • Instant Expert: In chapter 108, she's able to start swimming almost right away despite having no previous experience in it. Kitsuka, whom Ryouta had asked to look out for her at school, was supposed to help her, but she can't swim herself, so Kana ends up helping her.
  • I Owe You My Life: Kuroha saved Kana from getting killed off by some guards while both were still in the laboratory, and also helped her escape. In return, Kana tries to help Kuroha by warning her of potentially bad events that could occur.
  • Little Miss Badass: She's not quite an Action Girl, but she's close to it. Unlike Murakami who solves most of his issues through trickery.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Despite not being able to speak nor move her facial muscles, the doll-like Kana sure enjoys typing sassy words in her vocal machine.
  • Long-Lost Relative: To her older sister, who shows up since the beginning of the second part and is a reporter who tries to reveal the truth about Vingulf.
  • Luminescent Blush: Kana displays one after Ryouta says he doesn't mind carrying her around in episode 5.
  • Machine Monotone: Averted. Her keypad voice is just as emotive as if she were physically speaking.
  • Mission Control: Since she can't move, she shares the position with Kazumi, serving as a source of information for the group.
  • Mythology Gag: Her character card has her wearing Mariko's outfit plus Zettai Ryouiki grade A.
  • Ojou Ringlets: She has two ringlets that frame the sides of her face and complement her doll-like looks.
  • Oracular Urchin: The downside being that her visions are often out-of-context, which can lead to some Prophetic Fallacy due to her misinterpretation.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Kuroha and Kana are hiding in an abandoned village, and have no money to buy food or other basic necessities. So when Ryouta shows up with some food and cake, both girls are ecstatic about it.
  • Seers: She has the ability to see visions of people who will die in her environment.
  • Slashed Throat: Invoked. She kills Valkyrie, sneaking up on her and slashing her throat. Unfortunately, she recovers from this. Later, she tries again with Kurofuku, but fails and gets her face smashed by the back of his head.
  • The Speechless: She can't talk since she is unable to move her mouth. She has to use a small vocal machine to communicate with others. She regains the ability to speak after the top button of her Harness is pressed.
  • Superpower Disability: She has the ability to foresee future events, which helps Kuroha out quite a bit when saving people. Unfortunately, Kana's ability leaves her body paralyzed; she can only move her left hand slightly and swallow food. If someone presses the top button of her Harness, her foresight disappears and therefore, she can move her body.
  • Sweet Tooth: She loves sweets so much that she drools when Kitsuka invites her to eat some crepe.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: By pressing the top button of her Harness, Kana loses her foresight abilities in exchange for being able to walk again. Her first act after doing so is stabbing Valkyria in the neck to save Kuroha and Ryouta.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's considerably short and flat-chested compared to the other girls in the main cast. While the rest of the main characters are clearly teenagers, Kana looks closer to a preteen.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Goes from the paralyzed and weak doll-like girl who can only move her fingers to strong and skilled knife fighter after she regains the ability to move and starts training.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: She has a moment like this in chapter 112, after being Brought Down to Normal for a while. She has a long vision of Kikka being killed and then Ryouta and Hexenjagd showing up moments after she is eaten. She utilizes this to try and buy some time by delaying the Drasil from eating Kikka. Fortunately Misaki arrives in time thanks to the delay to knock Kikka out of the Drasil's mouth.
  • Tsundere: Kana appears as one, even though she's crippled and can only talk with the help of a computer and her left hand. She becomes a full-blown one after regaining the ability to move. Now she can show her anger with her face and physically assault Murakami with knives and hammers when he says something that embarrasses her.
  • Unprovoked Pervert Payback: Kana insists that Ryouta wants to molest her every single time he's around; she even does this when he carries her out of a burning house. She gets over this in Chapter 46.
  • Walking Spoiler: Kana's re-ability to walk makes her a literally walking spoiler for the second part of the series.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are:
    • Kana worries she's even more of a burden to the group in chapter 106 after losing her powers. Ryouta says she shouldn't look at it that way, because she was completely dependent on everyone while she was using her powers, to the point that she couldn't even feed herself. She does cheer up a little bit, until he mentions having helped her to the bathroom at times, which causes her to attack him in an attempt to make him forget through pain. He hilariously claims he's forgotten, but she doesn't believe him.
    • She suffers a Heroic BSoD in chapter 114 due to the incident at the hospital with the Drasil and Kikka. Despite that, Kikka tells Kana that she doesn't believe Kana would do the same things that the Drasil did if she suffered the same fate, because Kikka believes she's a good person at heart, unlike the witch that awakened.
  • You Are Number 6: Number 4101.

    Kazumi Schlierenzauer

Voiced by: Mao Ichimichi (Japanese), Emily Neves (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kazumi_schlierenzauer.png

Half-Japanese, Half-Austrian, this Magic User is a human supercomputer who has the ability to break any informatic code and hack any system through the net. She also happens to be very… forward towards Ryōta as soon as she meets him.

  • A-Cup Angst: Ryōta knows it, and doesn't fail to bring it up at every occasion, despite her violent retaliation every time he does. It becomes a Running Gag with time.
Ryouta: "Your breasts aren't really that worth—" (kicked in the face!) "OW!"
Kazumi: (Death Glare) "That's no way to talk to a girl when you've seen her secret garden."
  • All Women Are Lustful: When ever she meets Ryōta, she tries to seduce him or to have sex with him. And she assumes Hatsuna is having sex in chapter 123 after she takes a long time getting back from Takaya's house. Kana immediately tells her to stop thinking all girls think like she does.
  • Almost Dead Guy: In chapter 179. She melts, apparently as a result of self-ejection to prevent her own hatching. Ryouta and the others stumble upon her just in time to say "goodbye."
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Delivers one to Ryouta in chapter 139, stating once again she wants to have his baby so she can leave something behind if or when she hatches. He seems to finally reciprocate, after Kuroha once again mentions not being interested in him. Unfortunately the next day at school Kuroha mentions wanting to try liking him again.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Kazumi strips down naked while visiting Ryouta's house. She practically throws herself on him, but he just barely resists her advances. He instead just tries to go to bed, but is obviously having trouble sleeping knowing there's a girl right next to him.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: In chapter 55, Kazumi asks Kuroha one, if she likes Ryouta. The former tells the latter that she knows she likes him after everything he's done for them up to this point.
  • The Bet: Kazumi makes one with Ryouta in episode 10. She says that if she places second (because she's smart enough to realize he'd place first), he'd give her something. When he asks, she tells him she wants "his virginity". When he protests, she says he's just going to throw it away anyway. Unfortunately for her, and shockingly for Ryouta, Kuroha places first, while he places second. Kazumi places third, so she technically loses the bet. Kuroha innocently asks him for "a virginity" as well, not knowing what Kazumi really meant by that word.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Kazumi claims she's half-Austrian and can speak some of it, at least enough to fool Ryouta's classmates into thinking she's transferring in from a school in Austria. This turns out useful when some German writing has to be read.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl:
    • Ends up becoming one after Hatsuna shows up and shows herself to be even more direct in her love for Ryouta than Kazumi.
    • In chapter 107 while working at a maid cafe, she does another Indirect Kiss with him via feeding him ice cream. Hatsuna gets rather intimate with Ryouta, having him eat a cherry she had in her mouth. Both she and Kuroha are not happy to see that.
    • In chapter 131, she doesn't take it well at all when Hatsuna tells her she and Takaya saw Kuroha, then Ryouta leaving a love hotel. This was Kazumi's original end goal for the date, but she couldn't go because she was sick. This leads to a Sustained Misunderstanding in which she suspects Kuroha beat her to the punch regarding having sex with Ryouta, but they didn't do anything because Kuroha suspected he liked Kazumi and left the hotel before they did anything.
  • Comically Missing the Point: In chapter 129, she asks Ryouta out on a platonic date. She says that she just wants to see a movie with someone, then discuss it with them. She then immediately says that the date will ultimately culminate in a love hotel, prompting him to ask her if she even knows what "platonic" means.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Hatsuna warns Ryouta in chapter 138 that losing a wish they'd like fulfilled could lead them to this, after he brushes off Kazumi's Heroic BSoD after hearing him leaving a love hotel with Kuroha. At the very end, he spots Kazumi in the woods, and believing Kuroha lost interest in him, kisses her.
  • Do You Want to Copulate?: Kazumi comes right out and asks this of Ryouta more than once.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Kazumi teases Ryouta in the bath in episode 4, then hits him a couple of times after he insults her chest size. She hits him again in episode 5 after he makes fun of her breast size again. And then she hits him over the head with her bookbag in episode 7 simply because his head looked "whackable".
  • Erotic Eating: Kazumi and Hatsuna do this in chapter 107 while working at a maid cafe along with Kuroha. Ryouta and Kana pay them a visit while they're working, and Kazumi insists he try "the ice cream special". She feeds him, then takes a spoonful herself, leading to another Indirect Kiss. Hatsuna, not to be outdone, takes the cherry, puts it in her mouth, and feeds it to him via a kiss, and tells him to return the cherry pit to her the same way she fed him with it. Kuroha, for her part, while not happy at seeing said incidents, manages not to make things randomly explode like in earlier incidents. The older man eating there with his wife asks for the ice cream special as well, prompting his wife to scold him.
  • First Kiss: Kazumi shares hers with Ryouta in chapter 66 after the Accidental Kiss from earlier. She says that she intended this one to be her real first one, and would never forget it even if he tries to. Unfortunately Kuroha also sees this kiss.
  • Flanderization: Kazumi's perversion and constant talk about sex have reached ridiculous levels to the point that almost everything she says is related to sex.
  • Freudian Excuse: Kazumi's constant advances on Ryouta is due to the fact that she could die at any moment. And even if she's not in immediate danger, there's also the risk of running out of pills, which means she wouldn't have long to live anyway. Hence she badly wants a baby with him, so that if she dies, at least she'll have something to prove she existed. Of course he doesn't see it that way, and instead just wants to help them try to live as normal a life as possible. That, and he's interested in Kuroha.
  • Good Bad Girl: Despite her obsession with sex, she's a good person at heart.
  • Half the Woman She Used to Be: Kazumi suffers this fate in episode 13 of the anime, though in the equivalent scene in the manga, she gets decapitated instead.
  • Hellish Pupils: In the manga, when she uses her magic.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In chapter 179. Her melting somehow harms and distracts Loki enough for Ryouta and the others to escape from the roof and Kuroneko to escape Loki's crushing grip. Unfortunately, this doesn't last long enough for them to completely get away.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Kazumi seems to realize she's falling into this around episode 7. Nevertheless, she still likes to tease Ryouta quite a bit. In later chapters of the manga, she tells Kuroha that she likes him, and that if Kuroha doesn't make her moves on him, she would. Then in chapter 68, she asks him who he likes, and he mentions Kuroneko, but thinks Kuroha isn't her due to the lack of moles on her chest. Kazumi later strips Kuroha's top off and spots the moles, confirming that Kuroha is Ryouta's childhood friend and the girl he likes.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In episode 7, Kazumi asks Ryouta if a shop she points out is where virgins go buy eroge at. She says it loud enough that those guys near the shop can hear her, causing him to tell her to tone her voice down. She then insults him as a virgin, and he immediately fires back that she's one too. She blushes and says that a girl's virginity is worth more.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Kazumi's abilities are actually at an AAA-ranked level, but she failed the test on purpose because she refused to kill a person but didn't say that outright. She feigned a lack of power to do the job.
  • Indirect Kiss: See Ryouta's entry above.
  • The Internet Is for Porn: When Kazumi comes over to Ryouta's house to offer him help in finding the location they saw on the device, she says there's nothing he can't hide from her, including his where he lives. She then jokingly suggests looking at his computer to see what porn sites he visits.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: At first she was willing to help Neko and Kana, but only in exchange for anti-death pills. She was pretty demanding that she receives some death suppressant pills from Kuroha in exchange for her help, but after Kuroha explains she doesn't have any, but is going to get more, Kazumi demands half of what they obtain. It's later revealed she was down to one pill herself, and ended up sharing half of it with Kana to prevent the latter from dying.
  • Killed Off for Real: In chapter 180.
  • Loophole Abuse: Kazumi utilizes this to lower suspicions of her being yet another transfer student, after Ryouta warns her that too many new students coming in, especially to the same class, would look highly unusual. So she makes up a backstory that she transferred in from a school in Austria.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: About everything she says is related to sex and she openly states how much she wishes to sleep with Ryouta.
  • Mission Control: Her power doesn't have many offensive uses, but it makes her effective at gathering information. She can also control cameras and manipulate security systems, making her extremely useful for reconnaissance. This makes the revelation that she has an AAA-ranked power much easier to believe.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Specifically, she seems at least partially designed to appeal to foot and leg fetishists, given how often shots seem to focus on those parts of her body. In addition, she is often seen with her shoes and socks removed. The manga's cover is particularly unsubtle about it. In later manga chapters, it's revealed that it's actually Kazumi who's a foot fetishist after Murakami mentions that she isn't wearing shoes, and she asks him if he wants a footjob.
  • Must Not Die a Virgin: She is obsessed with having sex with Ryouta before she dies. In chapter 122, after mentioning it, Hatsuna suggests that she just guilt trip Ryouta into doing it. Kazumi seems open to the idea initially, but then reconsiders, stating she wants to do it because he wants to, not because he's forced to.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: She is named after the Austrian ski jumper Gregor Schlierenzauer.
  • Off with Her Head!: By Valkyria who moments earlier just exploded Hatsuna into Ludicrous Gibs. She gets better later however, thanks to Hatsuna being able to heal herself despite the extensive damage, and she also manages to heal Kazumi's decapitation.
  • Otaku: She's very interested with stuff from Akihabara, including eroges or maid cafes.
  • Science Hero: Doesn't seem to have any combat capabilities like Kuroha. But if she can access to the internet, she can do quite a bit, whether it's hacking into camera systems or Vingulf's computers.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: When testing her abilities, the Institute ordered Kazumi to kill a man with her magic. While she had the magical capabilities, because she refused to do it and just "claimed" she didn't have the power, she was relegated to Rank B.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Has no qualms about being naked around Ryouta in episode 4 while taking a bath. She also holds him rather intimately in episode 5, and even licks his cheek, though she stops once the table behind her and Ryouta suddenly smashes in half uncontrollably by Kuroha. And in episode 7, when he asks why she's stripped down, she tells him it's hot inside the observatory, and teases him some more about it. Then in episode 8 after finding his house, she sits on his bed, and pulls her panties down and asks him to have sex with her.
  • Shipper on Deck: In chapter 128, she tries to get Hatsuna to start going after Takaya after all the trouble he went through to show is apparent affection for her. She then accidentally lets it slip that by doing so, Hatsuna would be one less person she'd have to compete with for Ryouta. Hatsuna immediately calls her out on it.
  • Shout-Out Theme Naming: The fact that she's named after a ski jumper is a Mythology Gag to Okamoto's previous series Nononono, a manga about ski.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She is only interested in Ryouta. This earns him some ire from some other boys in his class when they complain that she only talks to him, but ignores every other guy who approaches her. Of course, none of them are aware of the existence of witches either, nor would they likely be as sympathetic to the situation as Ryouta is, hence why she doesn't pay any attention to them.
  • The Smart Girl: Of the team, though Ryouta is smarter than her. Kazumi's technopathy allows her to factor integers with ease (using her brain as her "tool"), thus being able to break many encryption schemes and taking control of computer systems with ease.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: More like Someone To Remember Me By. Kazumi eventually decides that she wants to make a child with Ryouta as to leave living proof of her existence.
  • Squee: Kazumi essentially does this the entire time she's in Akihabara with Ryouta in episode 7. She later tells him when they go to a maid cafe that this may be the most fun she's ever had in her life.
  • Stepford Smiler: Smiles a lot and puts up a cheerful attitude to hide her fears and insecurities.
  • Technopath: Her magic is technopathy.
  • Transfer Student Uniforms: Kazumi's uniform consists of clothes she found at the abandoned village.
  • Tsundere: She may regularly hit Ryōta and call him names, but she also makes no secret that she wants to have sex with him. And can be very direct about it.
  • Undead Tax Exemption: Kazumi ends up transferring in as well. When he points out that it would look too suspicious to have that many transfer students in a short amount of time, especially in the same class, she simply tells him that she made her background appear as though she transferred in from a school in Austria. On top of that, it would look less suspicious if she's in the Astronomy Club and seen at the observatory later.
  • Unexplained Recovery: In episode 13. The last time we see her, she's bleeding out. Then she's okay again when the epilogue scenes roll. It's explained in the manga since Hatsuna is also there. Later on, the Blu-ray version of episode 13 does explain that Hatsuna healed her.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Hatsuna. They hang around together a lot, even back then in the facility, but they often tend to snark at each other.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: She gets airsick, on a passenger jet, before it even takes off. It gets worse in flight.
  • Wham Line:
    • Played for Laughs when it comes to Kazumi teasing Ryouta, such as sharing an Indirect Kiss at a maid cafe in Akihabara. Bonus points if Kuroha is around to witness or hear about said events. Then random things explode, which she claims had nothing to do with her, despite it being one of her abilities.
    • She gives a more serious one to him in chapter 129, when asking him about Kuroha constantly losing her memories, and if he'd be okay with having to start over with her every single time. She then immediately asks him to go to a movie with her.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Kana starts to question Kazumi about what she knows regarding Valkyria in episode 8 while the two are alone, the latter tries to change the subject on it. Kana however continues to angrily question her on it, causing Kazumi to take her voice modulator away, and starts to strip her clothing off. Kuroha and the others then arrive back home, causing her to question what Kazumi was doing. Kana claims she was being molested, while Kazumi says they were just playing and offers some pudding to Kana. Kotori objects to it because it's her pudding, causing Kazumi to tell her she's getting fat by eating all those sweets.

    Kotori Takatori

Voiced by: Azusa Tadokoro (Japanese), Jessica Calvello (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takatori_kotori.png

A shy and kind first year who joins the astronomy club the same day as Kazumi. One of the escaped Magic Users, she is first thought by the group (and narratively implied) to be an assassin sent by the lab, before showing that she truly cares for her new friends. She has the power to switch places with another person by teleportation.

  • Almost Dead Guy: Already pretty blatant in the manga, but exaggerated in the anime near the end of the Valkyria arc. In the manga Ryota has to eject Kotori himself to stop Grane's hatching, after which Kotori talks for several minutes before completely melting. In the anime, Ryota arrives almost an hour after she ejected herself, yet she can still talk to him.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Due to containing the Grane within her body, a terrible case of Power Incontinence nearly causes her to kill everyone on the planet.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • She saves Neko from being killed by Kikako when Kotori switches places with the latter.
    • Ryouta is rescued from an arrest in episode 8 when Kuroha and Kotori show up to save him, using the info that Kazumi obtained from him as far as where he was going that day.
    • Later she saves Ryouta from his death fall by switching places with him and resetting the kinetic energy.
    • She later protects Ryouta and Neko from Valkyria and Ichijiku after awakening Grane's power.
    • Even after her death, her melted body protects Ryouta and Neko from Valkyria's magic by nullifying it partially.
  • Clones Are People, Too: Chapter 155 reveals that there are other Kotori Takatori in the alien ruins under Germany, and Vingulf explicitly uses them as Granii incubators.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She drops some juice she was carrying on Kuroha in episode 11/chapter 69. This is also how Ryouta finds out about the three moles Kuroneko had, and he finds out his childhood friend was still alive, albeit without her memories of the past.
  • D-Cup Distress: Kazumi's polar opposite in that department, which naturally makes the latter jealous.
  • Death Seeker: Kotori was planning on killing herself, and hopefully doing something heroic beforehand, largely due to Survivor's Guilt when her friend stopped taking her pills so she could live long enough to see her birthday in a week. Fortunately Ryouta and Kuroha manage to talk her out of it.
  • Expy: Hello, Nozomi! Her appearance also strongly resembles Nyu's. The fact that Kotori is a Living MacGuffin for the plot, gets temporary control of her extremely powerful superpower, and gets a Mercy Kill by the male lead makes her even more of an Nyu expy.
  • Freudian Excuse: When Kana has a vision of seeing a bloody Kotori smiling over Kuroha, they are understandably on guard as to who she really was. However, Kotori explains why she smiles a lot: Her friend Chie that she escaped with was going to die due to a lack of pills, and didn't want Kotori to be sad anymore, so she asked the latter to always try to smile even when it was sad, so it could help minimize the emotional pain. Ryouta comments later that it caused a lot of problems with Kana's prediction.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Despite the glaring weaknesses of her magic, Kotori's ability to switch with others has come in handy more often than once. In fact, Kotori's ability has been almost essential to saving a bunch of people, both members and regular civilians.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She persuades Ryouta to eject her in order to keep her Grane from killing everyone.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Along with Neko, who often strip down in their underwear due to it being really hot in the observatory.
  • Lethal Harmless Powers: Ryouta openly asks how someone with the ability to change places with anything could kill someone. Kana responds by stating how she could jump off a cliff and switch places with her target so they plummet to the ground. Then Ryouta comments that just pushing the enemy is more simple.
  • MacGuffin Super-Person: She contains Grane within her body, that's why the organization wants her and Hexenjagd wants to kill her very badly.
  • Mercy Kill: Murakami is forced to eject Kotori to prevent her Harness from hatching and wiping out all lifeforms.
  • Mundane Utility: At one point she uses her ability so she wouldn't be late to school. Note she can only use this once per day and is supposed to be in hiding. Ryouta immediately calls her out on doing such a thing so carelessly.
  • Not the Fall That Kills You…: Her ability apparently resets kinetic energy, which means that if she switches places with someone who is at the end of a 10-story fall, the target will land safely instead of ending up as cranberry jam.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: The normally ditzy Kotori seems to be of special interest due to something inside of her that others claim is capable of killing all humans on the planet.
  • Power Nullifier: When Grane is awakening it has an even greater nullifying effect and it's permanent.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Having retained her previous life's memories as Ichijiku's sister Rena (and knowing her death was the cause of his Start of Darkness) called him an idiot for his goal. She didn't want to be brought back like this, with so many killed. Neko continues, screaming that Kotori/Rena feigned not remembering as further punishment so he wouldn't get the validation he had any success in his conquest to revive her in an immortal body because of the thousands of people he had killed or tortured for that goal. He doesn't deserve love.
  • Red Herring: Kotori is introduced under circumstances that make her look like another assassin, but turns out to be telling the truth when she calls it a crazy coincidence that she ended up joining a club full of witches. Kana's premonition of her smiling over Neko's corpse just happened to be miss the detail of her not being the one to commit the murder.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red for Kuroha's Blue.
  • Repetitive Name: Kotori Takatori. The kanji of "bird" ("tori") is twice in her full name. It's also a bit of a Punny Name, as Takatori Kotori basically means "tall bird, small bird".
  • Slasher Smile: Has one in a premonition Kana sees, while looking at Neko's dead body. Later revealed to be a misunderstanding.
  • Stepford Smiler: An interesting subversion. Her best friend, Chie, as she was dying, made Kotori promise to always smile, even/especially when she was sad, because not doing so would only make her feel worse.
  • Supreme Chef: She likes cooking and is good at it.
  • Survivor Guilt: She only survived to her birthday because her friend Chie had deliberately stopped taking her pills, leaving the last few she had for Kotori.
  • Swap Teleportation: She can swap places with people. Interestingly, her power resets kinetic energy, which she unknowingly uses to save a falling Murakami.
  • Verbal Tic: S-s-s-she often stutters when answering!
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: She is initially convinced that her power is completely useless, especially since she can only use it once a day. It turns out it can be put to good use. She notably prevents Neko from being killed by Kikako, Ryōta from being strangled by a cop and later from falling to his death saving Hatsuna. Since it usually requires some preparation beforehand though, it's still relatively impractical.
  • You Are Number 6: Number 1107.
  • You Never Asked: She has a nasty habit of not giving Ryouta extremely important information until he himself has already come to the conclusion. Though it isn't because she is a Jerkass, but because she is The Ditz.

    Hatsuna Wakabayashi

Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama (Japanese), Carolyn Johnson (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wakabayashi_hatsuna.png

A very straightforward escaped Magic User with the ability to regenerate her body to an extreme degree. She's distrustful of humans until Ryouta risks his life to save her. Afterwards, she joins the other Magic Users in the astronomy club, having fallen in love with Ryouta.

While in the manga she was an escapee like Neko and the others, in the anime she was one of the seven witches who were supposed to keep an eye on Valkyria but were slaughtered.

  • Back from the Dead: Due to her Healing Factor, she gets "killed" several times, only to then heal back up and be perfectly fine. She is even able to heal others as well. However, she states that running out of pills or hatching would still kill her though. But chapter 127 reveals that when her drasil is put back in her Harness, she's able to even survive hatching, much to the shock of everyone including Hexenjagd.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Hatsuna is initially distrustful of humans due to being a witch. However, after Ryouta saves her from the tower, she sees that he really is a good guy at heart, falls in love with him, and saves his life later on.
  • Black Comedy: Many of her gag scenes are about her being injured or "killed" since she cannot die so easily.
  • Cassandra Truth: When she first tests Ryouta by pretending to not be able to get off the tower, he does what he can to save her, due to not wanting another repeat of losing Kuroneko. When she tells him her power is Healing Factor, he doesn't believe it because he hasn't seen her use it yet. He also feels she could just be saying it to save him at the cost of dropping her, so throws her back onto the tower before falling off himself though he's saved by Kotori switching places with him right before he hit the ground.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Hatsuna thinks she has the power to heal others, but only attempted it once, on a cat that got ran over recently. But she says that she stopped about halfway because she started to melt during the attempt. However, she tries it with Ryouta, who was fatally injured in chapter 73, and melts in the process. However, she says she should be okay after her hang up resets after a day or so. And Ryouta does end up recovering after his heart stopped beating.
  • Characterization Marches On: While some of her personality traits, such as a cynicism and her straight forwardness, are still core elements of her personality, she started as perverted-minded girl similar to Kazumi. Her pervertness is later toned down and she has become more snarky towards Kazumi.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She starts showing this off in chapter 107, after seeing Kazumi do another Indirect Kiss with Ryouta in the maid cafe by sharing a spoon she fed ice cream to him with. She then ups the ante by putting the cherry in her mouth, and feeding it to him via a kiss. Neither Kazumi or Kuroha seem happy to see that.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She snarks at Kazumi's antics a lot.
  • Erotic Eating: See Kazumi's entry above.
  • First Kiss: Shares hers with Ryouta. Kuroha subconsciously destroys the tower Hatsuna and Ryouta were just on after seeing that.
  • From a Single Cell: From nothing, actually. So long as her drasil is connected to her harness, she will regenerate. She has survived being completely obliterated and even hatching.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Happens quite a bit to Hatsuna due to her Healing Factor. She was the only one of the seven witches assigned to watch Valkyria because of this. She gets cut in half a few times, and nearly melts when attempting to heal Ryouta. And despite being nearly melted, she is still conscious and can still talk. This power also allows her to revive several other characters who get killed.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Gets cut in half by Valkyria. Fortunately, she has a Healing Factor.
  • Healing Factor: She has a very powerful one, bordering on From a Single Cell. The only things she can die from are running out of anti-death pills or being ejected from her harnest. However, chapter 127 reveals she survived hatching after her drasil is put back into the Harness. She is even able to heal Takaya back up despite taking a chomp out of him earlier in her hatched form.
  • Healing Hands: She can also heal other people, but this drains her.
  • Hesitant Sacrifice: In chapter 122, she discusses dying with Kazumi and Neko while they're at work. She tells them that if she did die now, it was still a longer and better life than she had while she was stuck at Vingulf's facility. However, after she's told by Ryouta that she's going hatch and that there'd be no way to save her or stop the Drasil, her only option is to eject. Though she seems to accept her fate, her body suddenly collapses and she begins crying uncontrollably at the thought of having to really die.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Though she immediately falls in love with Ryouta, she also realizes that he likes Kuroha.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: After Takaya pays to rub her breasts in chapter 143, she seems to get a turned on by it despite not liking him much.
  • Loophole Abuse: In chapter 107, Kazumi insists Ryouta try the ice cream special. When he says he can feed himself, she claims that she has to feed him, or else she would get fired for it. Though he lets her do it, he does wonder if she just made up that rule. Hatsuna follows suit with it by feeding him a cherry through her mouth, then claims she's just following the rules about how to serve the customers, much in the same way Kazumi was doing it.
  • Love Epiphany: Hatsuna has one in chapter 63 after Ryouta saves her life even though he didn't need to since she has fast healing. Unfortunately her Love Confession to him, along with kissing him in front of Kuroha and Kazumi doesn't make either of of them happy.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Hatsuna's power is regeneration, so it's impossible to permanently kill her. When she gets cut in two by Valkyria, her reaction is pretty much 'okay, walk it off, walk it off'. And in chapter 105, when Ryouta asks her how her day went, she just nonchalantly says that some truck hit her in a remote area.
  • The Medic: She can heal other people with her power, regardless how bad they are injured.
  • Must Not Die a Virgin: In chapter 123 Hatsuna finds out where Takaya lives and goes to his house to cancel her date with him the next day. After Kuroha says she's taking a while to get back, Kazumi immediately thinks that Hatsuna is taking her time because of this trope. Kana immediately tells Kazumi to stop making them think like she does anytime one of them is goes somewhere.
  • Not Quite Dead: She says she can heal from anything aside from hatching or running out of pills, which is proven when she's injured repeatedly throughout and heals back up like nothing happened. Unfortunately she hatches in chapter 124 shortly after Takaya gives her a Love Confession. Her Drasil then eats her body, along with part of Takaya. Then in chapter 127, after Hatsuna's Drasil is helped back into its Harness. She is able to heal back up, and then heals Takaya back as well. Both of them are alive and well again a few scenes later.
  • One Hero, Hold the Weaksauce: Her Healing Factor allows her to survive melting and her Harness hatching, things usually guaranteed to kill a witch.
  • Rescue Romance: Ryouta going above and beyond to try and save her from falling off the tower causes her to fall in love with him, due to the fact that he was putting all this effort to help her despite not knowing anything about her. Not that Kuroha or Kazumi like that however.
  • Secret Test of Character: When Hatsuna first meets the main girls, she's skeptical of Ryouta being a reliable human, despite the girls telling her he is. So she purposely climbs up a high tower, and "accidentally" slips off to see if he would only save himself or let her fall. Much to her surprise, he not only catches her, but refuses to let her go, and ends up saving her by throwing her back to the tower ledge, almost at the cost of his own life. She falls in love with him because of how much he cared for her, but her kiss and Love Confession doesn't sit well with either Kuroha or Kazumi.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: In the OVA, Kazumi challenges all the girls to cook for Ryouta in a Naked Apron. While Kuroha and Kotori become embarrassed, Kazumi is shocked to find that she doesn't mind and enjoys showing Ryouta her ass.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Like Kazumi, she's only interested in Ryouta. That doesn't stop Takaya from trying to woo her however.
  • The Sixth Ranger: She isn't a main character and a member of the group until Kotori's captivity.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Kazumi. They hang around together a lot, even back then in the facility, but they often tend to snark at each other.

Vingulf

    In General
The main enemy faction of the series. A dark institute, they experiment on little girls to turn them into witches for some nefarious purpose.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: In general, this is the response to anything that might inconvenience Vingulf. Any situation is always handled guns blazing, aiming for deadly force. If this fails, Vingulf just comes back with bigger guns. In numerous chapters, things would have gone much better for the organization with a bit of negotiation, intelligence gathering, or non-lethal strategies and tactics.
  • Expy: Of the Diclonius Research Institute, as an amoral research agency which serves as the enemy faction to the teenage heroes, performs horrifying experiments on little girls, and does it all in the name of saving humanity.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: The humans staffing the lab certainly come across as more depraved than the Drasils that they experiment on.
  • Killed to Uphold the Masquerade: Their usual policy is to kill anyone who learns of them or witches.
  • Lack of Empathy: Vingulf, as a whole, doesn't care about anyone or anything aside from the stated goal of "slaying god." Those who do get punished rather harshly, as Yuki Tsuchiya learned first hand.
  • We Have Reserves: Soldiers, researchers, witches, it doesn't matter. Everybody is expendable. In Chapter 165, Machina, the keystone in their plan for slaying god and their most powerful creation, has a backup: Ryota.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: The treatment of "witches" at Vingulf is downright despicable. They are treated as tools, on a good day. Chapter 165 has one, lying on the floor completely naked, with a laptop plugged into her Harness, to act like a network hub, and is completely ignored by the two Vingulf "researchers" in the scene.

    Director Takachiho
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takachiho.png

The man who explored the existence of the alien in Germany and founded the organization Vingulf. He's the highest authority of this organization, with Ichijiku and Onodera working directly under him. He is also the father of Machina. And Ryouta.

  • Adam and Eve Plot: Chapter 170 finally shows us exactly what he means by "kill the gods." He is absolutely convinced that "god" does not exist, but humans have an inherent genetic need to worship one, and the only way "mankind can leave behind its infancy" is to remove that aspect of the genetic code by exterminating all humans and repopulating the world with with the "Adam" and "Eve" that Loki has consumed and assimilated, somehow generating a new human race from within.
  • Big Bad: He is the boss of Vingulf and primary enemy of Ryota and Neko, who aims to capture back the escaped witches and kill the gods. Mainly in the manga, however, as the anime has him be a Greater-Scope Villain, and in the last chapters of the manga he is usurped by Loki.
  • Dystopia Justifies the Means: While his goal "slay the gods" isn't exactly clear, the methods he, and his organization uses create a great deal of suffering, and he likes it that way. In fact, the more suffering he can generate, the better.
  • Evilutionary Biologist: Multiple independent sources confirm this is his ultimate goal for Vingulf. However, he has failed to notice some very powerful, and inherent flaws in his plan. The most obvious are "hatching" and "anti-death pills."
  • Expy: To Director Kakuzawa, as the boss of the evil research institute with the rank of Director and the Big Bad who seeks to capture the super-powered main female character and use her to exterminate humanity to populate the Earth with a new race of advanced humans. He also winds up getting killed by a much more powerful entity that becomes the Final Boss instead.
  • Godhood Seeker: Chapter 151 finally reveals what "slay the gods" means, from the perspective of Vingulf. Takachiho wants to become a god himself, and thinks there's an actual Physical God in the way. So killing god is a necessary step in mankind's evolution.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: In the anime, he is much less involved with the plot, and his subordinate Ichijiku serves as the direct Big Bad.
  • Just Think of the Potential!: He says this word for word to justify his plans for "evolving" mankind with his Adam and Eve Plot.
  • Karma Houdini: Quite literally in chapter 171. After shooting Kuroneko in the leg to keep her from escaping or using her powers, he is grabbed by Loki and then teleported away moments before Loki makes a snack out of him.
  • Killed Off for Real: Combined with Swallowed Whole in chapter 178.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He is Ryouta's father.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: When we only see his silhouette, his glasses always shine.
  • Sinister Silhouettes: He and the other men around are shown as silhouettes. We first see him in person after his flashback.
  • Suicidal Overconfidence: He's standing in the same room as Ryouta when Loki is unleashed, and he outright orders Loki to eat Ryota. What's worse is that he's had the door to that room locked from the outside so even he can't get out if his "priestess girl" witch gets disabled.
  • Tautological Templar: He has convinced himself that the goal of "slaying god" is noble and just, and truly serves the interests of mankind as a whole, so everything he does in pursuit of that goal is in itself righteous and just, even if by neccessity it results in the complete extinction of the human race, if not all life on Earth. He is so certain of this that he doesn't think he has to explain himself to anyone, not even Ryouta the very one who's going to be the sacrifice for his "dream."
  • Übermensch: According to Kurofuku, Takachiho's entirely convinced that empathy, kindness, compassion, morality, ethics, etc., basically everything that separates humans from vicious animals, cold, cruel, calculating, and horrifying machines, or some horrifically brutal combination of the two, and allows for the functioning of a civil society is purely a construct forced upon humanity by some Physical God (or gods) to keep humans subservient, and the only way humanity can reach its true potential is to kill those gods. The fact that Takachiho's plan all but guarantees the destruction of all life on Earth is, to him, an acceptable cost to accomplish this goal, if not an explicitly desired outcome.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Drives the point home in crystal clear detail in chapter 170, as he's willing to let Loki eat Ryota purely because the boy was shocked, and dismayed at Kuroha's apparent death to Loki and a failure of the topmost button on her Harness.

    Chisato Ichijiku

Voiced by: Hiroki Tochi (Japanese), Adam Noble (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ichijiku_chisato.png

The chief professor in charge of the magic user experiment. His goal is initially to capture and kill the escapee magic users, and create the perfect alien, but it later becomes clear that he has his own agenda.

  • Badass Normal: A rather subtle one and he's more keen to letting the much stronger Valkyria do the work for him. However when push comes to shove, if he needs to get into action, he will. Slightly more prevalent in the manga.
  • Big Bad: In the anime. As the chief of Vingulf, he's the one largely responsible for the conflict with the witches, while his boss Tachachiko has less of a role.
  • Blatant Lies: When a captured fugitive Magic User tells him where the other escapees are, she asks him if he'll really give her pills. He says that it's a promise. Later, we see that she's dead.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Valkyria asks him if he doesn't care about anyone else, including her, he very bluntly admits to it.
  • Bulletproof Human Shield: Played dead straight in episode 13 with Ichijiku Taking the Bullet for Mako - with how much lead Hexenjagd were pumping into him, something should have gotten through, but nothing does.
  • Captain Ersatz: Imagine a more amoral Kurama. That's Ichijiku in a nutshell.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When his very first scene has him ordering the execution of a witch via Cruel and Unusual Death without batting an eyelid, you know he's not going to be sympathetic. Things go From Bad to Worse from there.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Ichijiku does all the horrible things in the hopes of one day saving his sister (which the head is on Kotori) who died from a disease, even if it means having to kill off all of humanity (including himself) to do it.
  • Expy: Aside from being a Captain Ersatz to Kurama, Ichijiku is one to Gendo Ikari. Both try to revive a woman they love (sister and wife, respectively), no matter if the world is going to end. And both are admired by a girl they saved.
  • For Science!: Basically all the research he's been doing regarding the witches has been to try and resurrect his dead sister, whose body is being used currently by an unaware Kotori. He doesn't care what it takes to achieve it, even if it means lots of deaths in the process.
  • It's All About Me: Subverted. He initially comes off as an emotionless man who cares for nobody but himself and treats others as mere tools. We find out later that in fact he cares for nobody including himself but does care for his sister Rena and is willing to sacrifice everyone including himself in the hopes of saving her. For a pretty specific reason.
  • Lack of Empathy: Has a fairly distinct lack of fucks given whenever a witch is concerned. His biggest moment comes when a bloodied, pink-haired witch pleads for him to spare her if she told him where to find Kuroha's clique. He promises not to kill her afterwards. Once we cut back to them, we see that the witch was decomposed as a pair of janitors clean away her remains. Ichijiku just keeps staring with a blank face until his bosses call him up.
  • A Million Is a Statistic: Ichijiku doesn't care how many people die in order to achieve his ultimate goal, to resurrect his dead little sister. He even compares B-rank witches to insects, and feels they're inferior beings that don't have any value.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Douple subverted. He has a gun and punch and kicks people, but he's not that much of a threat and leaves most of the fighting to Valkyria.
  • No Holds Barred Beat Down: Mostly in the manga where he often beats the crap out of people with the most nonchalant face ever. Even more so when he beat Ryota into a bloody pulp when they were trying to rescue Kotori.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Nobody expects that his guy would throw himself to protect Valkyria.
  • Pet the Dog: Ichijiku's one and only pet the dog moment is when he sacrifices his own life to protect Mako in the memory of his sister's final words to him. Miki and Ryouta are shocked and Ryouta even wonders if perhaps there was indeed a little bit of humanity left in him. Unfortunately for our heroes, this causes the already unhinged Valkyria to completely snap.
  • The Stoic: He shows rarely emotion, to the point that he's barely human.
  • Taking the Bullet: Blocks the bullets fired by Hexenjagd agents intended for Valkyria.
  • Tempting Fate: At the end of episode 10, Ichijiku says that he's going to use Valkyria to retreive No. 1107. While the other leaders in the organization protest, he says he's already released her, has seven A-ranked witches specializing in defensive magic to watch over her, so therefore controlling her shouldn't be a problem. Then the scene cuts to Valkyria enjoying the view of the outside for the first time in a long time, and as she looks at her keepers, all of them have been killed by her already.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: When Ryouta tries to plea for the girl's lives in chapter 71, saying they just want to live in peace, Ichijiku compares Ryouta's argument with an insect arguing for its life towards a human. In fact, Ichijiku considers the main girls to be the same as garbage and a failed product that has to be disposed of.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Averted in episode 12, when Ichijiku does shoot one of the Hexenjagd operatives that's using an Anti-Magic aura to prevent the witches from using their powers. He immediately has Valkyria warp herself, him, and Kotori out of the observatory.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He slaps Valkyria at one point to set her straight, and later punches Kotori, Kazumi and Kuroha when they try to interfere with his plans.

    Kurofuku

Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki (Japanese), Ty Mahany (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kurofuku.png

An agent of Vingulf who notably accompanies Nanami during her mission.

  • All Men Are Perverts: When a stranger (he forgot that it's Nanami) ask him to get some money, he is willing to do so, but only if she sells her body. He gives Nanami 1000 Yen (that's less than 10$) when she flashes him her boobs, and later again when she shows him her... armpits.
    • When Nanami sees into his memories, she's disgusted by what he has done in Vingulf. But we don't know what exactly.
    • He was even a pervert when he was in elementary school. He removed the panties of his first crush when she was sleeping, so he can peek.
  • Badass Normal: Seems to have gone through some military training or something. He defeats Kana, Kazumi and Hatsuna single-handily and snaps the neck of a soldier (without actually killing him).
  • Cool Shades: Those protect him from Nanami's powers. Unfortunately for him she simply has a crowd of guys beat him until they manage to take those glasses off, allowing her to read his memories as well.
  • Easily Forgiven: Ryouta tells him in chapter 135 that Nanami doesn't hold any grudges against him for causing her to get ejected and killed. He doesn't believe Ryouta, so tests them with a question, since Nanami read his mind before. Nanami, speaking through Ryouta, answers it.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Seems pretty despicable at first, especially while on a mission with Nanami. But later chapters point that he may not have been as evil as he seemed, particularly after Nanami, speaking through Ryouta, forgives him for ejecting her, and pleads with him not to kill the other witches and tarnish her memories of him.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Kurofuku means "Black Suit/Cloth", he got adressed as such by the Magician Girls, and other people who don't really know him; the characters who do know him never calls him by name. He might just have a weird name though.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Miki immediately recognizes him in chapter 136, stating he was a director, and high ranking enough to be able to access all of Vingulf's research. In chapter 138, he demands the alien embryo back from her, as a way to get back into Vingulf. Due to him being on a coma, she fills him in on what's happened recently, such as Ichijiku dying to protect Valkyria, and about his obsession with resurrecting his sister, things Kurofuku never expected of his boss. She then asks him to join Hexenjagd so they could fight against Vingulf together.
  • He Knows Too Much: The reason he is told he will be kept under surveillance even after being fired from the institute. To the surprise of no-one, he is disposed of on his way out. However, he barely manages to survive that.
  • Hero Killer: Easily delivers a Curb-Stomp Battle to Kana, Hatsuna, and Kazumi in chapter 134. He then mentions that he's killed a thousand witches, and they'll just be yet another statistic to him.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Shows genuine guilt when confessing that he caused Skadi to die in vain.
    • It's implied heavily throughout the manga that he actually does care about the witches but has to hide his emotions on the job or else he'll be the one to pay. He appears to show guilt when having to eject Nanami, allows Kana and Kuroha to live and even the new witches who have appeared remark that they'd rather not have to kill him.
  • Something Only They Would Say: A variation of this is used in chapter 135/136. Ryouta attempts to explain to him that Nanami's spirit is still alive inside him and forgives him for ejecting her. He then attempts to test them with three questions, and if they get any wrong, he would eject Kana. His first question is who his first love was. Nanami, through Ryouta, answers it, and then provides some more specific details, such as how Kurofuku peeked at the girl's panties when they were younger, and that she lived in a bakery next door to him. This shocks him so much he doesn't put up any resistance any longer. Fortunately Miki shows up and seems to know who he was, and takes him in to help Hexenjagd.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: He gets killed off in the manga for failing to capture #1107 even after letting their best foresight user die in the effort. In the anime his fate is uncertain, but he's not killed on-screen either. Probably because he survived the murder in the manga, as confirmed in chapter 106.
  • Sunk Cost Fallacy: The reason why he attacked Ryouta's group despite knowing that Vingulf would still try to kill him anyway, as best explained by Hexenjagd.
Miki: "He's killed so many people that he has to keep on killing. Otherwise, all the deaths he's caused will be meaningless."
  • Token Good Teammate: Played with, while he's not as morally sound as Tsuchiya, he's still far more morally sound than Ichijiku. The manga implies that he's actually a lot nicer than is shown but has to keep his emotions at bay while at Vingulf, something he tells Tsuchiya to do as well. In chapter 138, Miki offers him a chance to join Hexenjagd after he finds out that Chisato died trying to protect Valkyria, which he was unaware of due to being left for dead after getting shot.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In-Universe, he once notes that Tsuchiya is very much like he was when he was hired at Vingulf. His idea is that you have to become insensitive (or pretend to be) if you want to survive within it.

    Yuki Tsuchiya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_20_2.png

A young scientist recruited by Vingulf. Her first assignment is to look after Mizuka before her power is put to use.

  • Adapted Out: Along with the Skadi arc.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Comes to Kasumi's aid in chapter 173. Just as Kazumi is about to be ejected by a couple of Vingulf "researchers" that would rather stand around kicking little girls than run for their lives while Loki is rampaging.
  • Covert Pervert: Well, she would like to be covert, but unfortunately people in the institute don't have much consideration for private life. Freya in particular reveals out-loud and in public the porn sites she visits, the sex-toys she buys, and reads a bit of her yaoi fanfic.
  • Lima Syndrome: She ends up getting really attached to Mizuka and doesn't want her to die. Kurofuku tells her ouright that showing her emotions like that within the institute is not the best of ideas.
  • Token Good Teammate: She's the only one within Vingulf that isn't pure evil.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Of the Bara Genre variant apparently.

    Onodera
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/onodera_ch_101.png

"I am completely different to Ichijiku."

She's the substitute chief and Ichijiku's replacement. She's in charge to create a new Valkyria, Hrist. However, Onodera has the same Valkyria-type Harness like Mako Fujisaki's.

  • Ax-Crazy: Its made clear from the moment she's completely unhinged. To the point where she makes Ichijiku look sane in comparison.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: She has her own plans to betray Tachachiko, but is ultimately no match for him.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: In chapter 128, Vingulf is yet working on another witch, which Onodera claims is the most dangerous one yet, one which no human can control. Said witch then teleports into the room she and the scientists are in, and begins casting an antimatter attack similar to Valkyria. Onodera, though surprised, and thrilled, at first, just cancels the witch's antimatter attack, and follows up with slapping her, showing no fear whatsoever at this most dangerous creature.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: That's how she plans to "train" Hrist. The method is simple: bring in inferior witches, tell her that if she doesn't kill them they'll be ejected and die a horribly slow and painful death, actually do it, rinse and repeat until Hrist finally complies. It's as horrible as it sounds.
  • Cross Counter: With Kuroneko in chapter 175.
  • Death Glare: When she's pissed of, which can happen anytime. The new witch revealed in chapter 128 that's supposed to be even more dangerous than Valkyria even has an Oh, Crap! look after Onodera casually cancels the antimatter attack she was preparing while delivering this look.
  • Enemy Mine: With Ryota's group in the final chapters.
  • Expy: Plot-wise, she's an expy of Dr. Nousou from Elfen Lied. Both are doctors who work for evil organizations and replace their stoic predecessor (Kurama and Ichijiku, respectively) and are more emotional. They also work on projects regarding the strongest Silpelit/Magic User. Nousou creates four clones of Mariko, the strongest Silpelit and Onodera experiments with Hrist, a new Valkyria who surpasses Mako Fujisaki.
    • Coincidently (or maybe not), Nousou has light hair and his predecessor Kurama has dark hair and wears glasses. In Onodera and Ichijiku's case it's the opposite.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Before sending a team of Magic Users, she "promises" them that this will be their fate if they are going to fail or disobey her.
"I will make you wish you had been never born into this world, then I will kill you myself! Don't think I will only eject you. I'll make you into venting tools for mad men, humilated nonstop for three years until you die. This isn't a threat. This is a promise!"
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: She wears glasses and is much more evil than Ichijiku ever was. And that's in only two chapters she has appeared.
  • Freudian Excuse: As a witch herself, she suffered under the same horrific experiments as the others. This is what causes her to act as The Starscream towards Vingulf, whom she despises for what they did to her.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She is disturbingly easy to piss off. If she just yells at you, it's a minor miracle.
  • Karma Houdini: Aside from a brief fight with Kuroneko, she never even remotely comes close to having to answer for her many, many crimes and Kick the Dog moments.
  • Male Gaze: Her introductory chapter has two shots of her well formed butt.
  • Mood-Swinger: A lot like Mako Fujisaki, Onodera can go from a calm, collected and happy disposition to sporting insane looks and promising a slowly painful death.
  • Murder Isthe Best Solution: There is absolutely no situation in which violence, if available, isn't her first, last, or preferred methotd to deal with anything.
  • Spanner in the Works: She intends on becoming this to Vingulf, even helping to facilitate Machina's death.
  • The Starscream: She has absolutely no respect or loyalty for Vingulf or its directors, and she barely bothers to hide it. Any time she's alone, or annoyed (which is often) she will happily proclaim her superiors as "fools" or "idiots." Chapter 156 truly justifies this outlook due to Machina's actions.
  • Your Size May Vary: The length of her hair varies drastically in her introductory chapter. It reaches her back, then past that, then it's suddenly medium long. This is now her current hair length and it's very unlikely that she has a hair cut in the middle of her way to the conference. However, this happens again in chapter 128.

Vingulf's Magic Users

    Saori

Voiced by: Sayuri Yahagi (Japanese), Kira Vincent-Davis (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saori_brynhildr.png

A witch sent to stop Neko and Ryota when they try to raid the lab to steal death-suppressants. Ranked AA, she has both the power to cut anything with a 6-meter range and to rewind time a minute in the past.

  • Arc Villain: The first assassin sent to capture the heroes.
  • Ax-Crazy: Subverted. Though, she's willing to kill people, she seems not to enjoy it, actually. When she kills Neko, Saori looks rather disappointed.
  • Clothing Damage: Aside that she deals an important clothing damage to Neko, she also gets some damage and loses her boots and stockings during the battle (manga only, the damage in the anime is minimal).
  • Dark Action Girl: She can kill people similar like the Diclonii, and she's evil to her core.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Her hidden eye glows in her introduction.
  • Hero Killer: Subverted. She does kill Kuroha, and then Ryouta. But because he also stabbed her in the heart before getting killed, she's forced to use her ability to turn time back a minute, so in the end they both are brought back to life.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Ryouta stabs Saori in the back in episode 4, striking her heart in the process. She kills him, but is forced to utilize her spell to turn time back a minute, lest she succumb to death as well. She debates it for a moment, because using said spell would save her, but would also make her vulnerable due to the spell draining much of her power in the process. In the end she uses it, but then is easily captured by Ryouta and Kuroha due to not having much strength to escape or fight back.
  • Leotard of Power: Saori wears a green one.
  • Only One Name: Her full name is unknown.
  • Mythology Gag: Her slice ability is a Mythology Gag to the Vectors from Elfen Lied.
    • Doubly so in the English dub, since she shares the same voice actress as Lucy/Nyu.
  • Slasher Smile
  • Starter Villain: The very first enemy that the heroes fight. Although built up as an incredibly dangerous threat to the main cast, she goes down quickly. Later antagonists would make her seem tame in comparison.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: She has magic powers and gold colored eyes.
  • Time Master: Saori's second power is to revert time back for one minute. However, it causes her to lock up, which puts her in a bad situation after she reverts time to before killing Kuroha and Ryouta, since she can't fight back or run away.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She does not last for long as a villain.
  • You Are Number 6: Number 6001.
  • You Have Failed Me: What sucks is that she didn't actually fail. Sure, Neko and Ryouta tied her up, but she was planning to sneak attack them as soon as she regained her energy. Unfortunately, her Vingard superiors see her immobilized and declare her a failure, killing her by remote ejecting her Harness.

    Kikako

Voiced by: Yuu Hamagashira (Japanese), Cayla Coats (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kikako_brynhildr.png

The second witch assassin that the group faces, she is ranked AA+ due to her single but highly destructive power. She hardly talks and carries out her mission coldly, like a killing machine.

  • Arc Villain: The second assassin sent to capture the heroes.
  • Breath Weapon: Can fire a Wave-Motion Gun from her mouth, but since it's a Breath Weapon, she can only attacks people and things in front of her, but not from behind.
  • Brown Bag Mask: Ryouta does this to Kikako in episode 6, so as to avoid letting her see his face while he attempted to interrogate her.
  • Creepy Blue Eyes: Her blue eyes have not only a creepy color, but also Hellish Pupils.
  • Dark Action Girl: She kills people in a very gruesome way.
  • The Dreaded: Kikako, the AA+ witch chasing after Shino, one of the B witches that escaped with Kuroha and the others. When she's seen in episode 5, even Kuroha, who was determined to help the latter, freezes in fear when she hears that name.
  • Hellish Pupils: Not only that, her eyes in general are strange (there are scales around them).
  • Hero Killer: She kills at least three other escaped witches, and one is shown on screen in episode 5.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kikako has this look on her face after she's told that while she did get the three Harnesses she was ordered to, she would also be punished for being caught in the situation she was in, where she was tied up with a brown bag over her head. Episode 7 shows that they did torture her, and she's seen in a slump with blood all over her body.
  • Only One Name: Her full name is unknown.
  • The Quiet One: She's not very talkative and her lines are very short.
  • Scary Teeth: Pointy, shark-like teeth.
  • Stocking Filler: She wears a set of garters and thigh-high stockings with her shorts.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Kikako, the second AA+ magic user we see. Her beam powers are capable of decimating chunks of land, but she can only shoot them in a straight line with a little time lag, that's why Ryouta views her as less of a threat than Saori, who could cut people six metres around her.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: She can fire this from her mouth, but it turns out to be rather Awesome, but Impractical, as it takes a few seconds to charge and dodging it is relatively easy (as long as she doesn't retrain the target's movements).
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Like Saori, Kikako does not last for long as a villain either.
  • You Are Number 6: Number 5010.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After Ryouta and Kotori trap her and escape, she gets "interrogated", and is last seen lying on the floor with a lot of blood around her. This despite the fact that she managed to kill at least three escaped witches as ordered to do so.

    Nanami Tokō

Voiced by: Manami Numakura (Japanese), Molly Searcy (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tokou_nanami.png

A AA+ ranked witch with the mission to locate #1107 and the others. She has the power to scan, erase or alter the memories of anyone who crosses her gaze. Which she uses to temporarily escape Kurofuku's surveillance.

  • Anti-Villain: Nanami is not as murderous as Saori, Kikako or Valkryria and she prefers not to murder anyone. She also tries to have a free day where she does not have to use her magic.
  • Arc Villain: The third assassin sent to capture the heroes. Unlike the others, however, she actually becomes a member of the main cast.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Nanami, one of the witches Ryouta and the others meets later, does this for him. Though she has the power to wipe out memories and replace them with different ones, she doesn't do it to him, either because she can't erase his Photographic Memory, or because she chooses not to after seeing what a Nice Guy he is. In the end, her Harness is ejected, but not before she's able to transfer her consciousness into him, and provides him with some help later on.
  • Cool Mask: Before her face was revealed, she wore a mask that hid her lower facial half, combined with being In the Hood that gives her Hidden Eyes.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Both blue.
  • Easy Amnesia: One of Nanami's powers is to erase people's memories and if needed, rewrite them. This way she can erase her presence from their minds as if they never saw her before, or she could make them think she was their most important person they've known for years, even if she just met them.
  • Fake Memories: The aspect of her power that she kept hidden to the lab. She uses it to make people "remember" her or turn them against her enemy.
  • Girlish Pigtails: How she wears her hair. They also totally expose her Harness.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After learning about what friendship is, she becomes friends with the main characters. Unfortunately, not long enough.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: When she's first freed from the lab to search for #1107, she immediately tries to do things that she wouldn't have been able to, such as eat a lot of sugary foods. She later sees a bunch of girls walking together and having fun, and feels a bit lonely as a result. Then Ryouta and the other witches offer to be her friend, though this doesn't last because she's ejected and killed moments after meeting up with them.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: She can give this at will to people, from simply making people forget her to mentally turning them back into 5 year olds.
  • Loophole Abuse: Nanami's handler Kurofuku wears sunglasses even when indoors because she can't read a person's mind if their eyes are blocked from her view. However, this doesn't prevent her from wiping and rewriting other people's memories around him, and she uses them to attack her Kurofuko in order to expose his eyes to her.
  • Mind Rape: From wiping out their memories from the age of five onwards to implanting memories to making a guy believe he raped his sister who doesn't even exist. This ranges from Hilarity Ensues to Fridge Logic. She attempts to do this to Ryouta as well, but it doesn't work, due to either his Photographic Memory surviving the mind wipe, or Nanami choosing not to erase his memories because she saw something in him (he said he'd trust her and shows his eyes to her instead of looking away), or possibly both.
  • Posthumous Character: She is actually still alive when she's first introduced, but is quickly killed off shortly after she agrees to help Ryouta and the others. However, her "spirit" remains alive in him, having transferred her consciousness to his brain before her body melted away. She crops up again from time to time to help them.
  • Spirit Advisor: Becomes this to Ryōta after she is ejected and inserts her own memories into his brain just before dying.
  • Sweet Tooth: She claims that her magic requires a lot of sugar from her brain, that's why she often need to eat sweets. If it's true or just an excuse to eat some sweets is detable, but she really loves sweets.
  • Terrible Artist: Nanami's attempt to recreate what the police remember seeing Ryouta as looks nothing like him. In fact it looks more like an alien than a person.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She is remotely ejected before she can enjoy her new freedom.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Sunglasses completely block her power.
  • You Are Number 6: Number 5210.

    Mizuka/Skadi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mizuka.png

Ranked AAA, this sweet girl has a power of foresight far surpassing that of Kana, not only because her visions are far more accurate, but also because she can interact with the future she sees. Like Kana though, she is completely paralyzed, as well as half-blind and almost deaf. Like Nanami, her mission is to spot "#1107" so that the institute can capture her.

  • Adapted Out: Her arc was completely skipped in the anime.
  • Blessed with Suck: Her power would be quite awesome and flawless… if it didn't cause massive and irreversible damage to her nerves every time she uses it. It's assumed she will die if she uses it again − and it is indeed the case.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Her ability causes her to lose the use of parts of her body every time she uses it. This eventually kills her.
  • Code Name: "Skadi".
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Her visions effectively function like some kind of conscious dream, where she is in full health and can run all she wants, but also talk to people in the future. She actually uses this to help Kazumi, because while dedicated to her mission, she doesn't want anyone to die needlessly.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Kana, who has the same powers as her, just weaker. Well, more antagonostic counterpart, as she's not evil at all.
  • Only One Name: Her full name is unknown.
  • The Pollyanna: She perfectly knows that her power will eventually kill her and that the institute doesn't really care for her life. She just doesn't care as long as she is being useful to someone.
  • Token Good Teammate: Unlike the other witches working for Vingulf, she a friendly and timid girl, and is only doing their dirty work because she wants to be of use to someone.
  • Seers: The most powerful one in existence.

    Mako Fujisaki/Valkyria

Voiced by: Mamiko Noto (Japanese), Carli Mosier (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fujisaki_mako.png

One of the strongest, next-generation witches, called Valkyria. She looks just like Kuroha (with the exception of having white hair), but couldn't be more different if she tried. She has a sadistic, sociopathic personality, and would kill people on a whim, with a smile on her face. The exact nature of her relationship with Neko is not elaborated upon, since Neko herself can't remember her. Kuroneko, on the other hand, refers to her as 'Onee-chan', and fully remembers her.

  • Ax-Crazy: She's the most craziest character when it comes to kill people.
  • Black Comedy: When she tricks a man into a shower so she could kill him with a thought and not make a mess, her first thought after killing him is she just ruined her chance to take a shower.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Of the extremely nasty kind.
  • Captain Ersatz: She's basically a combination of Lucy, Mariko and Nana. Valkyria is superpowerful like Lucy, is the organization's trump card like Mariko, and is in love with a specific man like Nana.
  • Dark Action Girl: Another contrast to Neko.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": When they first meet, she tells Ryouta not to call her Valkyria.
  • The Dragon: To Ichijiku. She's extremely loyal to him and is his most powerful tool.
  • Dragon Their Feet: After Ichijiku's death, she continues to destroy the world for him.
  • The Dreaded: A double S ranked witch. Kana tells Ryouta that she can utilize eight forms of magic, one of which is the power to detect other witches. So naturally when she shows up unannounced, it puts quite the Mass "Oh, Crap!" trope into use.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Her first scene has her speak in a cutesy manner, then turn around... to reveal multiple bloodily killed witches with not a scratch on herself, after which she gives a Slasher Smile.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While Valkyria is seen killing random people and witches off randomly in chapter 59 and 60, she, for some reason, won't hurt her sister Kuroha, and by small extension, the other witches in the observatory. She also spares a random girl who was walking home with Hatsuna, who turns out to be a witch after the latter reveals where her pills are hidden away at.
  • Evil Twin: To Neko, her younger sister.
  • Evil Laugh: Right after killing policemen and blowing up a mountain, she laughs with a very squeaky voice and says that the outside world is fun.
  • Final Boss: She is the last opponent in the anime, who must be defeated to save humanity.
  • First-Name Basis: She calls Ichijiku by his first name, Chisato.
  • Flight: One of her powers.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: She has a Healing Factor power, similar to Hatsuna.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Valkyria, for all of her murderous intents, is completely subservient to Ichijiku, who manages to bring her back under control with a simple slap.
  • Hero Killer: Valkyria kills several people, such as the police who tried to stop her, to even some innocent people who just happened to be in the same area as her when she wanted to look at some scenery alone. She also kills some witches offscreen to take their pills away from them, including seven that Ichijiku sent to watch her.
  • The Heavy: She's much more dangerous than Ichijiku, but she's loyal to him.
  • I Gave My Word: The reason she spares the young human girl after Hatsuna gave up her pills is that she promised to spare the child, despite having no other reason to do so.
  • I Owe You My Life: Ichijiku saved her, which is why she's subservient to him.
  • Implacable Woman: Valkyria is very difficult to kill, as the main characters find out when she comes back after Kana slashes her throat.
  • Kamehame Hadouken: With her magic, she can fire beams from her hands.
  • Killed Off for Real: Her body is sucked into Kuroneko's micro black hole, then her Drasil is stomped by Ryouta.
  • Light Is Not Good: Contrasting with Neko's Dark Is Not Evil.
  • Mood-Swinger: The speed with which she goes from "murderous intent" to "tearful apology" towards Ichijiku is quite impressive. At times she appears as innocent as Neko, but can bear a Slasher Smile the second after.
  • Morality Chain: Ichijiku, even though he really doesn't care about anyone but himself, acts as one for Valkyria. So when he ends up Taking the Bullet for her in chapter 90, she really loses it and vows to kill all humans.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Easily destroys a mountain in one of her first appearances. Later destroys an entire city, and planned to take out Japan and later the entire world.
  • Sensor Character: She can detect other Magic Users when they are not hung up.
  • Slashed Throat: Suffers this in chapter 93 from Kana. Unfortunately, even this isn't enough to kill her.
  • Slasher Smile: Displays one from time to time.
  • Standard Female Grab Area: Kuroha does this to her in chapter 60. She then leaves, either because Neko would have been able to affect her directly with her magic, or out of respect or fear for her.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: She was in captivity by Vingulf's researchers, but Ichijiku saved her from a dangerous experiment that was going to fail. Since then she's in love with him, even when she knows that he does not feel anything for her.
  • Superpower Lottery: Possesses several types of different powers, including teleportation, being able to dismember people with a thought, detect other witches and even create antimatter. And the number of her powers increases over the time, having eleven powers until her death. It takes unlocking Neko's own Superpower Lottery abilities to defeat her.
  • Telekinesis: One of her powers.
  • Villain Teleportation: One of her magic powers.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: One of the biggest contrasts between her and Neko.
  • Yandere: Towards Ichijiku. After his death, she decides to kill all humans.

    Freya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/freya_anime.png

A AAA technopathy user, who spends her days reading manga and playing games in her room. Tasked with locating Chisato Ichijiku after he betrayed the institute and kidnapped #1107 by himself, along with Valkyria.

  • Code Name: "Freya".
  • Demoted to Extra: Even in the manga she only appears in a couple of chapters, but the anime reduces her screentime to roughly 3 seconds.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Kazumi, who has the same powers as her. Freya is basically what Kazumi would become, if Kazumi hadn't failed her test on purpose.
  • Idiot Hair: Strangly enough, she's the only character with this hair.
  • Lazy Bum: She pees in a plastic bottle because going to the toilet is too much of a pain for her.
  • Otaku: In the most pejorative way possible.
  • Technopath: Confirmed as the best Technopath by Hexenjagd.

Rurumi

Misaki

Three magic users sent by Onodera to eliminate Kurofuku, after Vingulf learned of his miraculous survival.

  • Asshole Victim: Rurumi, according to Kikka in chapter 114. She tells Kana that Rurumi was kind of a jerk before her Drasil awakened due to attacking the two earlier. Hence why it so easily turned on its former friends. Despite that, Kikka believes Kana wouldn't be the same since she did everything she could to protect the former when the Drasil showed up. So if Kana's Drasil did show up, it wouldn't eat her right away.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Misaki does this in chapter 113 to save Kana and Kikka from the Drasil in the hospital. She wasn't around during the earlier chapters because she was following other people at the hospital at the time and was unaware of the Drasil showing up until she came back to where Rurumi and Rin were at.
  • Eaten Alive: Rurumi's body is eaten by the Drasil, but she's still technically alive, since the Drasil contains her soul. Then Rururmi eats Rin.
  • Godiva Hair: Misaki after she turns back visible.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: In chapter 109, the three girls are clearly jealous of seeing Kana not only moving around, but also talking to Kitsuka and eating a crepe, and enjoying life while they're stuck with Vingulf. Rurumi, the smallest girl, then uses her Voodoo Doll on Kana, and Kitsuka as well in a fit of jealousy. One of the other witches later tells Kana that she isn't their target, and even wants to join whatever group the latter is with.
  • I'm Melting!: Misaki ends up remotely ejected when her beacon is triggered.
  • Invisible Streaker: Misaki's power is invisibility, but only for her body, and her glasses, so to actually use it, she has to strip.
  • The Leader: Rin, the tall one, appears to be in charge of the trio. Kana even addresses her as "president" when she runs into them, a title Rin doesn't seem to like.
  • Off with His Head!: Rin suffers this fate in chapter 111 by Rurumi, or rather, the Drasil that awoke inside of her.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Rin. She tells Kana that they're not after her, and instead are targeting a human. She also says she won't report having run into the latter, and even says she wants to join Kana's group after they finish their mission.
  • Stupid Sacrifice: Rin sacrifices herself in exchange for Rurumi's Drasil promising not to eat anyone else. Kana calls Rin out for it since the Drasil is not rational, and Kana is right.
  • Take Me Instead: Rin offers herself up to be eaten in exchange for "Rurumi" promising not to eat anyone else.
  • Voodoo Doll: Rurumi uses this on Kana and Kitsuka in chapter 109, after getting incredibly jealous at the normal life Kana seems to be having while they're still witches stuck with Vingulf.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Rurumi's Drasil hatches and devours her corpse right after entering the hospital. She then bites Rin's head off when the latter tries to protect Kana. Then, Misaki ends up remotely ejected right after the Drasil is dealt with.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Rurumi's Voodoo Doll allows her to manipulate the body whoever she points it at. However, if she loses her doll, she's completely helpless. Kana points out after the former tossed her doll into the air while in control of Kitsuka's body, and this allows her to grab said doll, and help Kitsuka land back down safely.

    Eri/Hrist
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hirst.jpg

Another Valkyria type magic user and more powerful than Mako Fujisaki. Unlike her, Hrist is a good person who hates the research facility and attempts several times to escape, but she is always keep down by Onodera.

  • The Ace: She is even stronger than Valkyria and shares some of her abilities as well, as chapter 170 shows.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: She gets ripped apart and eaten by Loki while Takachiho watches from an observation room.
  • Ax-Crazy: Courtesy of her treatment from Onodera, as chapter 170 shows.
  • Dual Wielding: In chapter 170, she wields two Uzis that shoot a liquid that instantly explodes.
  • Nice Girl: She is a genuinely good girl, but that does not prevent her from desiring to destroy the research facility.
  • Kick the Dog: She is the "dog". Onodera's way to teach her discipline is very cruel.
  • Mystical White Hair: She is one of the most powerful witches after all.
  • Resigned to the Call: A truly villainous variant. By chapter 161, she has given up on resisting killing "failed" witches. She even goes so far as to call it "her job." Much to Onodera's delight.
  • Sadistic Choice: She is subjected to a truly horrific series of these in chapter 159. Onodera keeps killing witches, by ejection, in front of her until she's compelled to do it herself, and then cheers calling her "murderer-san."
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: The color illustrations reveal she has gold eyes, and she is among the most powerful witches.
  • Superpower Lottery: She shares some of her powers with the first Valkyria, including creating anti-matter and teleportation.
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: She does not hesitate to yell "Bitch" at Onodera every chance she gets.
  • Troubled Abuser: Invoked. By chapter 161, Onodera has forced her to kill over 8000 witches, seemingly to see how far Hrist could be compelled to follow orders. However, near the end, she sadistically reveals, to the complete disgust of her subordinate researchers, that she specifically wanted Hrist to become one. The slasher smile when she thinks she succeeded clenches it.
  • Would Not Hurt A Child: She has no intention to kill the Initializer who is living with her in the same room, despite he nullifies her magic and hinders her to escape. This is because Hrist is a good girl and has no grudge on him, since the boy is also just an experiment like her. Believing that she has to escape, the Initializer commits suicide to help her escape. A Senseless Sacrifice since it turns out that behind the walls of the room are full of Drasils that already nullify her magic to begin with.

    Machina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/makina.png

A male magic user introduced in the second half of the series with power rivaling Valkyria and an even worse god complex. He becomes obsessed with Neko soon after meeting her, declaring that she will be the Eve to his Adam. Is actually Ryouta's younger brother, Yuuta.

  • Abduction Is Love: His idea of "love" is grabbing a girl, forcing her to go with him, breaking her arm if she hesitates, and threatening the lives of everyone around her if there are any objections.
  • And Now You Must Marry Me: In chapter 155, proclaims that he is the "Adam" and Kuroha Neko is the "Eve" of the new world after Vingulf. To say this prospect is problematic is the very definition of "understatement."
  • An Arm and a Leg: Inverted. That's all that remains of him after the Sorcerian went "Drasil" on him.
  • Ax-Crazy: He's clearly unhinged as he loves killing people, such as decapitating the US President and then exploding half of the White House.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: He decides to let Kana live after seeing her in tears at the death of her sister. And moments earlier he claims that the US President having a state funeral was a good thing, never mind that he was the one responsible for the death. In fact, he states that killing people is doing them a favor, because those he kills will have someone to mourn them. He actually calls this doing a good deed.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Machina, it wasn't a good idea to start kicking and punching the sorcerian. It was an even worse one to take your eyes off it and attack Neko.
  • Cain and Abel: With Ryouta. Surprisingly, he's the ABEL.
  • Death Is Cheap: Comes back just chapters later after being eaten by the Sorcerian. Becomes Dead All Along In chapter 164, as the "Machina" that was attacking was an illusion created by Nanami, who was disguised as Aprhodite.
  • Dystopia Justifies the Means: He not only likes making people suffer, he calls it a good deed to cause someone to mourn the death of a loved one.
  • Entitled to Have You: He outright DEMANDS that Neko "loves" him in return, meaning she is unquestionably obedient to his every word.
  • For the Evulz: Though he seems to nominally obey orders, he seems to relish the thought of killing people, and often goes overboard with it, such as decapitating the US President, then causing the White House to explode shortly afterwards, on live TV.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Is stated to be half-human, half-Sorcerian.
  • Hero Killer:
    • Kills the US President, then explodes a portion of the White House.
    • Later he decapitates Ryouta and cuts Kana's sister, Mina, in half.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Looked down on Neko for "being attracted to the genetically inferor," but... well, the "inferior" sorcerian, was not.
  • Irony: Called humanity, especially Murakami, "stupid beyond fixing" because he witnessed a hatching, which even Vingulf can't reliably predict or prevent, yet look at his actions in chapter 156.
    • The being who was convinced it was his right to unceremoniously kill off anyone on a whim and looked down upon Royta and his friends is unceremoniously killed off by the Sorcerian, who remarks that he tastes bad. Then it turns out that Ryota is his biological brother and next in line to be turned into a Sorcerian after his death.
  • Insane Troll Logic: He believes that he can make Neko fall in love with him purely by logic and reason, never mind the fact that he caused her physical injury and forced her to watch as he killed people close to her, oh, and threatens her with rape if she doesn't comply.
  • Karmic Death: Every scene he's been in since his introduction, he's been running around kicking every dog he can because he thinks it's his birthright to maim or kill anyone he comes across. He even starts doing it to a "god," the Sorcerian. Once the sorcerian wakes up and gets used to his body, he goes and shows Machina how it feels on the receiving end.
  • Kick the Dog: While he's done this many times, his most notable one is when he beats the shit out of the Sorcerian just after he gets revived for seemingly no reason whatsoever, then Machina gets eaten by him once he gets back up.
  • Killed Off for Real: The Sorcerian bites off and consumes the upper two thirds of his body, killing him. This prompts Vingulf to get his backup, Ryota.
  • Mad Love: He "loves" Neko. He appears to kidnap Neko, when she resists he breaks her arm and attacks her friends to make her obedient, and then when Neko refuses his demands to "love" him back he tells her she will inevitably reciprocate his feelings even if he has to force her to.
  • Meaningful Name: His code name is "Machina", and he's been involved in a Deus ex Machina, and a Diabolus ex Machina.
  • The Sociopath: He fits every aspect of this trope to the letter. "Ruthless" doesn't even begin to cover the way he acts. He lives only for the sake of his own pleasure, has no concept of personal boundaries, and is very quick to resort to deadly force when things don't go his way.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: His resemblance to Ryota's mom isn't a coincidental result of the art style. He and Ryota are biological brothers.
  • Tempting Fate: Drags/Teleports Kuroha Neko, against her will, into "The Shrine" to introduce her to the "Sorcerian," the one being who Machina's magic won't work against. When Kuroha proclaims, loudly, that she's terrified and wants to leave, Machina completely ignores and dismisses her response as stupid and foolish. Because the Sorcerian is completely unresponsive and incapable of independent movement. BIG MISTAKE.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Instead of fleeing the room when the Sorcerian woke up, he started kicking and punching it, ranting about his "genetic superiority," and then turned to try and kill Neko instead when she tried to run. It didn't turn out too well for him.
  • Villainous Crush: He has a disturbing crush on Neko and wants to make her his "Eve" even if he has to force her. He lost interest and tried to kill her the moment she begged him to stop attacking the Sorcerian, and tried to run.
  • Villain Teleportation: Is capable of doing this, appearing and disappearing at will when he's on the hunt for Neko and the others. He claims to be able to teleport anywhere on the planet, and possibly even teleport to the moon, though he actually hasn't tried that one yet.
  • The Worf Effect: For all Machina's powers, boasted, demonstrated, or theorized, the Sorcerian takes him out pretty quick the moment it starts fighting back.

    The Sorcerian
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sorcerian.jpg

Introduced as a "non-sentient" alien entity inside a giant glass tank, it is actually sentient and a member of the species that created humanity.

  • Always a Bigger Fish: It is the bigger fish of the story. Even Machina was no match for it.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Sees all life on Earth, especially humans, as food, but it will happily have a conversation with its meal, and considers Machina "gross" after eating him.
  • Cardboard Prison: It could have escaped from its tank at any time. It was just waiting for someone stupid and arrogant enough to bring it a Valkyria that it could resonate with.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Eats Machina's upper half after getting the shit kicked out of him.
  • Genetic Memory: Has a form of this that allows it to store memories independent of its brain, as it clearly recalled events that happened over 500,000 years ago like it was just yesterday, even though the brain can't even store half that much.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He is a member of the dead alien race that Vingulf is trying to save humanity from, but does not directly antagonize the heroes.
  • I Am a Humanitarian: Considers humans as food. Still doesn't stop it from engaging in conversation with them.
  • It Can Think: All those chapters it was in the giant tank, completely unresponsive, it was watching and learning from the scientists, researchers, directors, and everyone else in Vingulf that it met.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: It was only pretending to be unresponsive.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: His body was too lacking in organs to sustain itself for very long outside of his tank. He melts and dies shortly after having given the readers a glimpse of his power. And having dropped the name of an enemy who's apparently much worse than him.

Click here to see giant form

A second alien being under study by Vingulf, specifically Takachiho. The Sorcerian's fear turns out to be well justified, as he is responsible for destroying their species and wants to eat all of humanity. Eventually becomes the final opponent of Ryota.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Grows to giant size in chapter 176 in an explosion visible from orbit.
  • Ax-Crazy: After breaking out of his tank, he attacks everyone and everything in front of him with wild abandon.
  • Big Bad: Briefly becomes this once he escapes, as he explodes Tachachiko in threat by trying to Kill All Humans.
  • Big Eater: Eating entire legions of soldiers just isn't enough for him- he wants to eat all humanity.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Nothing Ryouta's group does to him has any lasting effect, especially in his giant form.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: Implied at the end of chapter 175.
  • Cardboard Prison: Just like the Sorcerian, the glass tank is really no barrier to his escape.
  • Combat Tentacles: Has four "tentacle" things on its back, and each one has its own mouth with a row of dangerously sharp teeth.
  • Eye Scream: Half of his face gets completely obliterated in chapter 177, including having his eye fly out and explode.
  • Final Boss: The final enemy that Ryouta and his group face.
  • Genocide from the Inside: It is indicated that he killed his whole species, which is why they are not around anymore and no trace of them exists.
  • Gratuitous English: In chapter 172, he goes "OK. OK." while "surrendering" to Ryota's group when automatic weapons are pointed at him and he is pretending to be a researcher.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: For most of the series, as a member of the alien species that created humanity, he is this by default. He also is indicated to have killed said species, making him indirectly responsible for the conflict. Then he breaks out and becomes the Final Boss.
  • Healing Factor: Although Kuroneko can hurt it, it can regenerate all the damage she does.
  • Immune to Bullets: Surprisingly averted. Automatic weapons fire does do damage, but not enough to actually disable or kill it, unlike all the Drasil encountered previously which were completely unaffected.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: Pretends to surrender to Ryota while impersonating the researcher it ate so as to escape Vingulf. When Ryota finds out, it drops the act immediately.
  • One Head Taller: Is bigger than the Sorcerian, even before going Kaiju.
  • Scary Teeth: Sharp, shark-like teeth in its mouth and on its "tentacles."
  • Shapeshifter Baggage: Zigzagged. When changing from its giant form to a "human" version, it loses mass through the same type of "melting" that an ejected witch goes through. But after eating Hrist, it grows to giant size without previously assimilating anywhere near a similar amount of mass.
  • To Serve Man: He is an alien that to eat people.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Changed from a giant alien being to a "human" form.
  • Walking Wasteland: In its Kaiju form, almost anyone that comes in contact with its black, tarry liquid dissolves into nothingness, presumably digested.

Hexenjagd

    In General

Like the name suggests, Hexenjagd is an organization that hunts Magic Users, whom they call "witches". They are also opposing Vingulf. Members of them were originally researchers of Vingulf, but after discovering their inhuman goals, they left it and founded Hexenjagd.

  • The Cavalry: They do show up at times to save the day, such as saving Kana and Kitsuka in the hospital after Rurumi hatched in the hospital.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: Subverted. The Hexenjagd reps save Kuroha and the others from Ichijiku in chapter 73/episode 12. But then they tell them at the end of the chapter that they have to kill them because they really are monsters. In chapter 74 they explain to Ryouta that the girls are really just those alien slimes they've seen inhabiting the bodies of the girls. And sooner or later, those things will emerge from the girl's bodies and turn into something that's definitely not human. So they figure it's better to kill them now. But Ryouta manages to talk them out of it, largely because the girls only have about a week supply of pills at best, and one of the reps says they're unlikely to emerge in such a short time and their bigger priority was hunting down number 1107, Kotori, who was kidnapped by Ichijiku when he fled. They also help rescue Kana and Kitsuka at the hospital after one of the drasil hatches.
  • Church Militant: Their outfits resemble those worn by Christian clergy, and Miki and Initializer pray at the start of episode 13.
  • Enemy Civil War: Hexenjagd is an organization that comprises of researchers from the main organization that's doing the research and experiments on the witches. While they are fighting the main organization, they are also hunting down witches as well, which puts them at odds with Ryouta's group.
  • Enemy Mine: While they're not exactly on friendly terms with Ryouta's group, they're at least not actively trying to kill them either. Both groups are also more focused on Vingulf's actions.
  • It Never Gets Any Easier: According to Miki, they still aren't used to killing people.
  • The Good, the Bad, and the Evil: These guys are somewhat nasty neutrals. They're not nice, and entirely too trigger-happy when it comes to witches, but they aren't okay with Vingulf's evil methods and they're willing to work with Ryouta and his escaped witches rather than just killing them, and even listen to a What the Hell, Hero? from Ryouta.
  • Meaningful Name: "Hexenjagd" is German for "witch hunt".
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Hexenjagd makes one to Ryouta in chapter 79. They want Kazumi's help hacking and finding out where Ichijiku is hiding Kotori so they can eliminate her, or more specifically the "Grane" or "alien life form" inside of her, which is capable of destroying all humans on Earth. In exchange, they'll reveal the formula on how to create the death suppressant pills.
  • Only One Name: Full names of the members have to be revealed yet.
  • Out of Focus: Their role in the anime is drastically reduced, whereas in the manga they are quite active when Ichijiku and Valkyria are running around. They also help stop witches that have hatched in later chapters of the manga.
  • Villainous Rescue: Kuroha and the others are saved from Valkyria in chapter 72/episode 12 by the appearance of representatives from Hexenjagd, a group of witch hunters, but also opposes the organization Ichijiku is representing.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Subverted. They want to kill witches, because they (and especially Kotori) harbor alien life forms that are a threat to human survival. However, as it turns out, they don't qualify, because they're too easy to talk down and convince to use more moderate means.

    Miki Neumeier

Voiced by: Rina Sato (Japanese), Shelley Calene-Black (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miki_brynhildr.png

The founder of Hexenjagd. Not much is known about her yet.

  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She gets angry very easily and usually plays the Red Oni to Long or Initializer.
  • Nun Too Holy: Though she dresses like a nun, she hardly acts like one, and often threatened Ryouta and the other witches.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Averted and lampshaded.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She's smart enough to realize that killing the witches hiding in the observatory wasn't worth the effort after hearing that they were going to run out of pills in a week or so anyway. She also helps Ryouta out when taking down Ichijiku and Valkyria.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: When she shows up wearing ordinary street clothing in chapter 136, Ryouta and the other girls are shocked that she actually looks nice in them. Kana also teases her about being an Old Maid.
  • Younger than She Looks: In chapter 136, Kana jokingly suggests Miki is in her 40's. Miki angrily says she's not even 30 years old yet.

    Initializer

Voiced by: Junko Minagawa (Japanese), Meaghan Avocato (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/initializer_brynhildr.png

A mysterious boy whose name is unknown and who has the power to nullify magic powers within a certain range.

  • Ambiguously Human: What he is exactly, and why he has this power hasn't been made clear so far. But on the outside he just looks like an ordinary boy.
  • Power Nullifier: He prevents witches from using magic, even Valkyria. He can't nullify a power he doesn't know the witch has, though.

    Long
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/long_1.jpg

A tall man with long, blond hair and round glasses.

  • An Arm and a Leg: His left arm is blown up by Valkyria, but it could be worse.
  • Demoted to Extra: He has some relevance in the manga, but he has no lines in the anime at all. Even the German speaking guy got a line.
  • Expy: Looks similar to Luke Valentine.

    Akane

Voiced by: Yui Kondou (Japanese), Brittany Deans (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akanee.jpg

A researcher of Vingulf, who actually works for Hexenjagd. During the transport of the "failed" magic users, Hexenjagd failed to capture #1107 and Akane accidently died there, but she was able to give Neko Kuroha the terminal of Hexenjagd and the alien embryo.

Other fugitive Magic Users

    Kanade

Voiced by: Asami Takano (Japanese), Katelyn Barr (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kanade.jpg

One of the escapees, who is captured very early in the series and killed off.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: When she is sentenced to be ejected, she fearfully begs for her life and promises not to try to escape again, but her captors are unmoved and kill her anyway.
  • Big "NO!": She screams this as she is killed.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: She was a friend of Neko and Kana, and when Kana foresaw her capture, Neko wanted to rescue her, only for Kana to say it was too late. After her death, she is never mentioned again.
  • He Knows Too Much: An unconscious girl named Maki is seen with Kanade as she's taken back to a Vingulf facility. She pleads with them not to harm her friend since she's just an innocent normal girl that got caught up in the mess. But Kuroha mentioned to Ryouta about Vingulf not having any issues killing people who know about their organization and the witches, and Ichijiku flat out says that since Maki saw her using her powers, she cannot be spared, so it can be safely assumed that Kanade's friend was killed offscreen. Or worse, reconstituted into a witch.
  • Identical Stranger: She looks like Neko from behind, just to mislead the audience that Neko might be captured by Vingulf.
  • Only One Name: Her full name is unknown.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Her Harness is ejected by Ichijiku, just to show how the Magic Users will end and how cruel the man is.
  • Shameful Strip: She and Maki were stripped naked when they were captured.
  • Strapped to an Operating Table: She spends her interrogation and final moments shackled naked to a table, facedown to make accessing her Harness easier.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She has barely any screentime, and is largely there for show what happens if a witch gets ejected.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: She is interrogated on where the other witches are hiding. When she says she doesn't know because the witches all went in different directions, Ichijiku decides she has no more value and orders her ejected.

    Shino

Voiced by: Yuki Takao (Japanese), Elizabeth Bunch (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shino_brynhildr.png

An escapee who has contact with Kazumi. She possess the power to understand animals.

  • Adaptational Heroism: In the manga, she's just a minor character who contacts Kazumi to ask for help, but is killed by Kikako because Shino runs panically away, being an easy target to hit. This is changed a little bit in the anime, where she meets a little black cat, allowing her to display her magic power, and ultimately she sacrifices her life for this cat.
  • Ascended Extra: The anime gives her a little bit more screentime and reveals her magic power to the audience. The circumstance of her death is changed to give her a bit more personality.
  • Friend to All Living Things: In the anime, she sacrifices even her own life just to save a cat.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the anime, she sacrifices her life for a black cat she met.
  • Only One Name: Her full name is unknown.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: She is killed by Kikako, a Magic User from Vingul who is hunting escapees, just to show that Ryouta and Neko cannot save everyone.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Her power is understanding animal languages.
  • Too Dumb to Live: In the manga, where she panics and is easily killed by Kikako.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She's killed off right after her introduction.

    Chie

Voiced by: Ayane Sakura (Japanese), Katelyn Barr (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chie.png

An escapee and friend of Kotori. Because their anti-death pills were running out, but Kotori's birthday was sooner than hers, Chie decided to sacrifice her life by refusing to take any pills, so Kotori can experience her 16th birthday. Chie was a Technopath like Kazumi and helped Kotori to enter in a school, which is coincidently Ryouta's.

  • Heroic Sacrifice: Kotori's friend Chie does this for her. Their birthdays were coming up, but due to the lack of pills neither one of them would live long enough to see it. So Chie decides to forgo her pills so that Kotori could at least live to see hers, especially because the former's was a week after Kotori's, so she definitely wouldn't have lasted even with Kotori's share. Kotori feels really bad about this, and attempts to let herself die as well, but Ryouta and Kuroha manage to convince her to survive, if nothing else, to live to see Chie's birthday and wish her friend one.
  • Only Friend: She was Kotori's first friend and only friend before Kotori met the other main characters.
  • Only One Name: Her full name is unknown.
  • Posthumous Character: Chie is dead when she was mentioned for the first time. All informations about her are mostly from Kotori.
  • Technopath: Has the same magic as Kazumi and Freya.

Other Characters

    Kogorō Hashiratani

Voiced by: Kentarō Itō (Japanese), Jay Hickman (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hashiratani_kogoro.png

Ryouta's uncle, an eccentric scientist genius. Ryouta goes to him for help regarding the magic users.

  • All According to Plan: Claims the events of Chapters 152, 153, and 154 is exactly what he expected and wanted to happen when he visits Ryota in chapter 155. And that Ryota should be happy about it. Because people are supposed to be happy that the leader of a very powerful country is killed, friends and loved ones are kidnapped or killed right before their eyes, and they're Forced to Watch.
  • Brutal Honesty: He tells facts as they are. Interestingly enough, this trait of his actually helps Ryouta work out his strategies better.
  • Cool Uncle: Deconstructed. He's very supportive to his nephew, but the price for his aid can get anywhere from an annoyance, to crippling if not deadly dangerous, and it's totally random.
  • Determinator: He is prone to having motion sickness, so he cannot get into any moving object without getting sick. This did not stop him from walking from his hometown to the college over a hundred miles away.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Zigzagged. He's seen with this eyes shut and open on occasion.
  • For Science!: Kogorou is the good variant of this trope, but he is slightly crazy in his normal work and very hard to convince.
  • Insufferable Genius: He tells Ryouta that he's been offered a job by a prominent American pharmaceutical company, but doesn't want to leave Japan, and says if they wanted him that badly, they should open up a lab in town for him. Ryouta also didn't want to have to talk to him at all, but because of his expertise, he ends up visiting him to see if Kogorou can recreate the pills for the girls.
  • The Internet Is for Porn: Averted. Kazumi is disappointed that he never visited a porn site.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: He can't understand how women work, that's why he hates them. That doesn't stop him from helping Ryouta's witches anyway.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He isn't the friendliest dude around, but damned if he isn't a loyal ally of team Ryouta.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Has a lot of money in several accounts due to being very good in the stock market. This comes in very handy later on when Ryouta needs a new hiding place for the girls after the observatory is compromised.
  • Straight Gay: He's not Camp in anyway, but he often makes clear that he does not like women. However, accoring to Word of God, he has not that much interest towards men either.
    • His first line is saying to Ryouta how handsome he has become and that he's probably adored by the boys.
    • The first time he meets the heroines, he says this:
"I'm Kogorou Hashiratani. [Ryouta's] uncle. 32 years old, single. I'm not single because I'm not popular. It's because I hate women. Women are stupid."
    • When he accidently breaks the mood between Kazumi and Ryouta, he and Ryouta are confused about Kazumi's sudden mood change. This phenomenon is one of the reasons why he prefers men over women.
    • He later tells the girls again that he's not interested in women, especially not in little girls.
  • Wham Line: He tells Ryouta that he needs six months or longer to reproduce the anti-death pills.
  • Worthy Opponent: To Ichijiku. When they were still in college studying for their degrees, Ichijiku was the ones always getting the higher marks, and he respects him.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Talks to an associate of his in chapter 140 about the possibility of an alien embryo, and says he plans to hold a press conference over it. He even tells Kogorou that he'll be as famous as Einstein and Newton. Kogorou immediately shoots him in the head, stating that he wants conclusive evidence before going live with it. But since the man got that excited over it, he suspects it's the real deal.

    Kitsuka Hatsuda

Voiced by: Mariko Honda (Japanese), Christina Kelly (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kitsuka.png

A girl who Ryouta tutors in his spare time and who has a crush on him. Nicknamed Kikka. She later becomes friends with Kana.

  • Action Survivor: She becomes one after spending time with Kana, and learning more about witches first hand in chapter 108..
  • A-Cup Angst: She has even less of a bust than Kana, who isn't terribly large herself. When she notices the difference in chapter 108, she's not very happy about it.
  • Body Horror: She witnesses a witch melting in chapter 113. Though she doesn't say anything at the time, she has a horrified look on her face as it happens.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Knowing that the guy she has a crush on has suddenly gained many female friends makes her this.
  • Expy: If you compare with Elfen Lied, Kitsuka being a ordinary girl with no traumatic or dramatic backstory, being a brown-haired Tsundere who is in love with the male hero, she's this to Yuka. Adding Kitsuka's middle school age and her Secret-Keeper status, she's also one to Mayu.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Fitting to her Tsundere character.
  • Go Through Me: She attempts this against the drasil in chapter 112/113, if nothing else, as a means to delay it eating Kana after having killed and eaten several other characters already. It works about as well as you'd imagine a teenage girl with a mop as a weapon against a giant monstrosity. Fortunately Misaki saves her in chapter 113, moments before Ryouta and Hexenjagd arrives to destroy it.
  • In-Series Nickname: Kikka.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kikka has this look in chapter 103, along with Kana, when they both see each other at the former's middle school, which Kazumi transferred her to since the latter was able to move around again.
  • Out of Focus: In the anime, her appearance and role is vastly reduced due to Compressed Adaptation limitations having only 13 episodes to work with. She only shows up briefly when Ryouta is tutoring her, and again when Nanami brainwashes her to lead Ryouta to her. She also doesn't show up by the beach when the main cast goes there.
  • Precocious Crush: In episode 7, when he leaves the tutoring session a little early, she asks if he has a date. He then tells her to call him "sensei" (teacher), and says if she has time to has pointless questions like that, she should be studying more. After he leaves, she blushes and says it's not a pointless question.
  • Secret-Keeper: In chapter 109, Kana reveals the existence of Magic Users and Kitsuka experience Rurumi's magic.
  • Super Drowning Skills: She isn't a good swimmer. Kana later gives her some ribbing for it in chapter 108, particularly as she picks up swimming right away, and ends up helping Kitsuka to swim. However, chapter 112 reveals that she has an irrational fear of water due to nearly drowning several years earlier. Made worse by the fact that she wasn't in very deep water either, but slipped and lost her balance.
  • True Companions: She completely trusts Kana after hearing that the latter will protect her, and Kitsuka would give her life for Kana.
  • Tsundere: Type A for Ryouta.
  • A Twinkle in the Sky: Rare non-comedic example. This happens to her in chapter 109 after demanding proof from Kana about witches, and suffers this from Rurumi, a magic user still associated with Vingulf, the organization Kana and the others ran away from.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Kind of becomes this with Kana after the latter regains the use of her body and joins her school. And definitely after they both survive the hospital Drasil incident, the lengths they went through to protect the other.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She does this to Kana in chapter 114 when the latter doesn't show up at school after the hospital drasil incident in the previous chapters.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Kitsuka experienced a pool accident when she was a child that resulted in her aquaphobia.

    Takaya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/garou_4.png

A young man from Ryōta's school who dropped out and disapeared for several months before reappearing just as suddenly. He meets with their party when he coincidentally enters the bar where the girls work. He has a crush on Hatsuna, and after learning the truth about the magicians, he becomes an ally of the heroes.

  • Act of True Love: Did not wave a single bit when Hatsuna hatched, still trying to reason with her who became a monster, and who bite him in half; after Takaya is revealed as quite the perv, Hatsuna rushes to say he is just a playboy, Murakami however reminds her that Takaya saw all of Hatsuna, from her healing powers to the monster she becomes when hatched, yet never stopped loving her, a sharp contrast to the first “friend” she is seen with, just taking a peek at her healing powers was enough to get horrified and abandon Hatsuna, realizing this Hatsuna goes on to have a Date with Takaya.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: He prostrates in front of a thug who has taken Hatsuna hostage (not knowing her life isn't really in danger) and almost begs his forgiveness before she deliberately hurts herself on his knife.
  • Bash Brothers: With Ryouta. They have a Brains and Brawn dynamic.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • He saves Hatsuna, Kazumi and Kana from Kurofuku.
    • He and Ryouta rescue Kana from Tachibana's partner.
  • Brains and Brawn: The Brawn to Ryouta's Brain.
  • Cassandra Truth: Ryouta assumed he wouldn't believe him when he told Takaya about the existence of witches in chapter 123. However, he averts this trope and actually believes him, partly because of Ryouta's tears at being unable to stop her from hatching, and also because he witnessed Hatsuna's Healing Factor earlier after a thug cut her face and it healed back up instantly.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: After Hastuna survives her Hatching Takaya reveals his perverted side, demanding sex from her just because she accepted to go on a date with him, Hatsuna quickly denounces him as a bad guy, Murakami is quick to remind her that Takaya has a fair share of girls who confessed to him, he is a top student, and comes from a rich family, yet Takaya only has eyes for Hatsuna, also even with his strong urges towards her, Hatsuna doesn’t need to do much to make Takaya stop in his tracks, he is never too forceful. When Hatsuna, Neko and Kazumi need money to go to the school trip and Kazumi jokingly suggests that they need to sell their bodies to get it, Takaya just happens to be there and requests to grope Hatsuna's breasts 24 times, so he pays the amount for all three of them. And the reason he just don't give them the money for free is because he thinks they would not accept it. And he's right.
  • Do You Want to Copulate?: His demand for sex to Hatsuna in chapter 127 is so blunt and shameless that it made every reader wonder if the chapter was serious, or the translation accurate. Chapter 128 reveals that he didn't succeed thanks to Kuroha doing something to stop it.
  • Glad-to-Be-Alive Sex: Demands this from Hatsuna in chapter 127 after everything they just went through in the last few chapters. For his part, he did take a big risk in giving her a Love Confession, along with being Eaten Alive by her hatched drasil. Though Hatsuna clearly seems uncomfortable with his demand, Ryouta doesn't seem to offer much help, and more or less allows Takaya to do whatever he wants to her as he's seen carrying her off in the last panel in chapter 127.
  • Hidden Depths: He may be violent, but he usually has good intentions behind his actions. He's also an honor student like Murakami.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Hatsuna tells Takaya in chapter 123 that she likes Ryouta, but he likes someone else, hence why she has no feelings for him. He later tells Ryouta to comfort her, but instead the latter tells him to just tell her how he feels about her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He has rather boorish manners, but he's not a bad person at heart.
  • Loophole Abuse: Hatsuna tells him to avoid all contact with her at school after he rescues her from a group of thugs. However, he shows up at the maid cafe she works at later, and says she never specified not talking to her at work.
  • Love at First Sight: Instantly falls head-over-heels for Hatsuna and her "magic charm". Kazumi has the opposite effect on him because "she has the stench of a slut"… which is jarring as the two look identical and Hatsuna isn't any more prude than Kazumi.
  • Love Confession: He gives one to Hatsuna in chapter 123, after going through a lot of trouble to find out where she lives and learning about witches from Ryouta. Unfortunately she hatches in the next chapter, and her drasil then eats her body, along with part of his when he attempts to save it from getting eaten.
  • Not Quite Dead: He's half-eaten by Hatsuna's Drasil. When it goes back to her Harness, Hatsuna's body regenerates and then she heals him to save his life.
  • Screw Destiny: Despite hearing that Hatsuna is supposed to hatch the next day in chapter 123, he still attempts to find a way to save her.
  • Ship Tease: Kazumi teases Hatsuna about this with him due to his frequent visits to the maid cafe. For her part Hatsuna doesn't seem interested in him, mostly because of the fact that she could die at any moment, so doesn't want to form any real meaningful relationships with anyone aside from Ryouta, who is helping them, and the other girls she's hiding with.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Murakami says Takaya is quite popular with some girls and that he is rich, in short Takaya could go through his sex craze with other willing girls, yet he only pursues Hatsuna.
  • Sixth Ranger: He's a legitimate ally of the Astronomy Club, to the point Ryouta jokes that Takaya's is the club's "gold medal champion fighter".
  • Stalker with a Crush: Ends up saving Kazumi, Hatsuna, and Kana in chapter 134 when he delivers a punch to Kurofuku. He tells the latter not to underestimate the power of a stalker.
  • Thanks for the Mammary: Does this to Hatsuna in chapter 143. The girls want to go on a school trip with Ryouta, but can't afford the 80,000 yen (about $650 or so) per person cost. They jokingly mention that Takaya may pay 10,000 yen to rub Hatsuna's breasts, then suddenly hear him agree to the deal. Turns out he heard the conversation, and is willing to pay the 10k if he can rub her breasts twenty four times to pay for Hatsuna, Kuroha, and Kazumi. She ends up reluctantly agreeing to it.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: While he did have a reputation as a bad boy, he seems to kick it in high gear in chapter 127. After being successfully healed back up by Hatsuna, he demands to have sex with her, simply because she agreed to go on a date with him. She thinks he's going way too fast, but the last scene of chapter 127 shows him carrying her off and telling Ryouta he's going to borrow the observatory for a bit.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He and Ryouta share this dynamic.

    Mina Tachibana
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kanasister.png

A journalist and Kana's long lost sister.

  • Cloudcuckoo Lander: Some of the things she's said and done are more than a little strange.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: In addition to her sister being kidnapped, a con man pretending to be a private investigator/psychic completely cleaned out their family's finances and her mother committed suicide with her last will and testament reduced to only two words, "Find Kana."
  • Half the Woman She Used to Be: Suffers this in chapter 152/153 protecting Kana from one of Machina's attacks.
  • Harem Nanny: She's shaping up to be this in chapter 147. Horribly averted by Machina's actions in chapter 152.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Intercepts an attack meant for Kana from Machina in chapter 152. Unfortunately she's cut in half in the process.
  • Home Nudist: In chapter 106, she is seen in a hotel room naked while on a laptop and talking to Nei on the phone. Nei spots her in the window and berates her, saying anyone could see her and she could catch a cold.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Won't step back before any danger if it can lead to hints for her sister's location. She continues her investigation on Institute V even knowing that people have died trying before her, and goes as far as breaking into a hospital to abduct the comatose Kurofuku.
  • I Will Find You: She has searched for her little sister Kana relentlessly after the latter's disappearance 9 years earlier.
  • Long-Lost Relative: She and her sister Kana were separated for years after the latter's kidnapping.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her father is not even mentioned, and her mother died when she was young.
  • Police Are Useless: Kana was part of a mass kidnapping incident, and the police outright refused to do anything about it. Since Vingulf was behind the kidnappings, they probably had the means to stop the police from getting involved.
  • Taking the Bullet: In chapter 153, she dies intercepting an attack by Machina meant for Kana. And though Hatsuna was around, Ryouta was also beheaded by Machina, forcing her to save him over Mina.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She is offed only a few chapters after we've learned her name.

    Nei

A man assisting Mina in her investigation about Institute V. Unlike her, he's more motivated by the scoop than by any noble goal.

  • The Bus Came Back: He was seen speaking with Kana in chapter 159. He only stuck around long enough to learn of Mina's death, and say that he's too much of a Dirty Coward to tangle with Vingulf before leaving again.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Landers Minder: For a while, he was this to Mina.
  • Only Sane Man: He had to rein in Mina's antics earlier in the story just to keep them both from "disappearing."
  • Put on a Bus: After his "interview" with Kana went poorly, he hasn't been seen again. He could well be in prison.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Gave up on exposing Vingulf after hearing about Mina's death.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He was willing to kidnap a child, Kana, just to get a story on Vingulf. This cost him dearly.

    "Aphrodite"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nanami_as_aphrodite.jpg

A girl that appears to be a small child, and approaches Ryouta in Chapter 160. She claims to know how to rescue Kuroha, but Ryouta has to "please her until she's satisfied" first. She's actually an illusion created by Nanami.

  • Girlish Pigtails: She's got the standard version.
  • A God Am I: Claims to be "the goddess of love."
  • Killed Off for Real: After she spends a last day pretending to be a happy girl with Ryota, she creates an illusion of Machina coming back and killing her so Ryota will cry for her. After getting her wish, she erases herself from Ryota's memories, making him forget her, but in return frees up a portion of his brain to help him live longer.
  • Older Than She Looks: If her statements are to be believed, she was there when Murokami and Kuroneko walked that sewer pipe to go see "aliens" approximately 10 years ago, in story. Yet she looks like she's in middle-school, tops.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Averted. Ryouta specifically calls her out on this.
  • The Reveal: After she dies, she reveals herself to be Nanami, which could explain why Ryouta still remembers her whilst everyone else doesn't after even though she wiped peoples' memories of her clean when she originally died.
  • Something Only They Would Say: She convinces Ryouta that she's telling the truth by dropping little hints that only those who are tangled with Vingulf, Hexenjagd, or the like would know.
  • Tempting Fate: Invoked. Demands Romantic Spoon Feeding, just before Ryouta's witches show up.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She's killed in only 4 chapters since her introduction.
  • You Do NOT Want To Know: In chapter 163, when Ryouta tells her about why he was released from the Laboratory after being reconstructed whilst Kuroneko was held in, Aphrodite tells him that he's better not knowing why, with the reason being that he'd want to die if she told him. Though she does tell him he should find out the truth himself.
