Ambiguous Name: Man On Fire

Go To

To-do list:

  • The trope has been expanded to cover both horror-focused examples about a human body being set on fire being portrayed as more primal and visceral than an inanimate object being set on fire and comedy-focused examples about the idea of a frantic man running around while on fire being Played for Laughs. Remove wicks and on-page examples that don't fit the revised definition and leave ones that still fit. Keep track of wick cleanup using Sandbox.Man On Fire Wick Cleaning; note that Woman on Fire wicks are only allowed on Characters/ pages.

Man on Fire, according to the page description and laconic, seems to be about how easy people catch on fire. Basically, it is to people like how Made of Incendium is to objects. And interestingly enough, the former is much more older than the latter trope. But it seems like whenever I see this trope mentioned, it's usually just used for people who simply get set on fire or are on fire, which is pretty much chairs on fire. Or perhaps the most common use for it is people who die fiery deaths, with some of them falling under Kill It with Fire. Occasionally it might even be used for someone who's Wreathed in Flames. And like any trope, it too has its share of examples with little to no context. I think the problem with the trope is its name. It has the name that can be used for a variety of meanings; not really illustrating what the trope really is about. And it seems the main trope page itself barely mentions the purpose of the trope, which doesn't help too much either. I got my wick check and looking at 50 wicks out of 2416, it just pretty much shows exactly what I'm talking about:

  • Correctly used: 3/50
  • People being on fire/people being set on fire: 14/50
  • People dying fiery deaths/Kill It With Fire: 17/50
  • ZCE/Insufficient Contect: 7/50
  • Murky/Other: 9/50

As you can see here, I could barely find anything that fits the definition of the trope. It's pretty much dominated by people being set or killed by fire. I have a couple ideas on what to do with this:
  1. Merge the trope into Made of Incendium. Expand that to where it's people who could easily catch on fire and burn wildly, not just objects.
  2. Turn the Man on Fire page itself into a disambiguation page for other tropes such as Kill It with Fire, Wreathed in Flames, Made of Incendium, Spontaneous Human Combustion, Infernal Retaliation, Playing with Fire, Incendiary Exponent, and of course, the Man on Fire movie.

Then Korgoth throws a glass of alcohol all over him, cuing another series of screams. Then he sets the alcohol ablaze; no reaction shots this time, the guy just runs around screaming for a bit then falls over dead. Just another boring bar-fight for Korgoth.

8 letters to go.

Of the wicks I changed or removed, there were plenty of ZCE's, plenty that fit other tropes...and only one so far that's supposed to be for the film with the same name.

Edit: Yeah, good thing we were cleaning up wicks. Started on the R namespaces now, and of the six Roleplay/ wicks, one survived. Didn't help that two of the casualties placed them in an example tree for indices being used as tropes.

2 letters to go, and they're huge.

Currently in the middle of Characters/, so hopefully I'll finish that up tonight. Then I'll have the F namespaces; Film/ will take a while...

Edit: Now F remains. I already handled the minor namespaces, so Fanfic/, Film/, and Funny/ are all that's left.

Crown Description:

Man On Fire is frequently misused, since it's for when people catch on fire more easily in real life, but the part about catching on fire easily is often ignored. What should be done with it?
