The Sadecki Family

    Jeff

Jeff Sadecki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sadecki_jeff.jpg
"Shauna, we've always been these people. Secrets have always been a part of us."

Portrayed By: Warren Kole (adult), Jack DePew (teen)

Jackie's boyfriend. In 2021, he is Shauna's husband. They share a daughter, Callie.

  • Awful Wedded Life: With Shauna; they don't communicate, any genuine love they might have once felt for each other seems to have evaporated and they're pretty much just going through the motions. Shauna is actively having an affair. She thought Jeff might be having an affair. As it turns out, he was actually blackmailing her fellow crash survivors in order to get money to pay back money he owed loan sharks due to problems with his furniture business. Their relationship actually improves significantly from there, though.
  • Bad Liar: Becomes evident in "Storytelling", when he lies about having Shauna's gun, which is most definitely not in the glove compartment.
  • Blackmail: He's the culprit blackmailing the Yellowjackets; his shop is going down the tubes and he's become desperate for money.
  • Bumbling Dad: He can't discipline Callie despite Callie's rudeness to Shauna, and his incompetent blackmail scheme nearly lands Shauna in prison.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: He makes a good point that while he and Shauna had a pretty shameful start to their relationship, they were only teenagers so of course they didn't have the best judgment.
  • Easily Forgiven: He forgives Shauna easily for everything she did in the wilderness, including the fate of their first child. Though it becomes clear in Season 2 that Shauna blames herself for this when it really wasn't her fault. Their son died in childbirth.
  • First Guy Wins: He's now married to Shauna, who he had sex with - and presumably lost his virginity to - as a teenager.
  • Love Martyr: When he learns that Shauna has killed Adam, he offers to take the fall. He actually tries to do so in "Storytelling".
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Shauna thinks he's cheating on her. He's actually running the blackmail scheme due to the failure of his furniture store.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's in great shape even in his forties, and goes shirtless more than any other male character on the show.
  • Papa Wolf: When Callie tells him she's been dating a cop, his first reaction is not "how much did you tell him about the murder" but "who the hell is this grown man dating my teenage daughter". He also adores Shauna, but the only time he treats her with less than worship is when she endangers Callie's safety by getting her involved in the Adam plot.
  • Pushover Parents: To Callie. He doesn't seem to notice how obnoxious and disrespectful his daughter is, nor does he seem to care all that much.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Shauna had no idea that he read her diaries years ago, and therefore has known all this time what happened in the wilderness, but he's apparently never spoken about it to anyone.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He starts off as a neglectful husband, but gradually becomes a much more loving and sympathetic figure, starting when he defends Shauna to Jackie's parents. He then offers to take the fall for Adam's death and wasn't cheating on Shauna; he was running a blackmail scheme, largely redeeming himself for his past behavior.
  • Two-Timing with the Bestie: He and Shauna started their relationship twenty-five years ago and he impregnated her with her first child, when Jeff was dating Shauna's best friend Jackie.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Jeff getting involved with loan sharks and then blackmailing the Yellowjackets, without telling his wife, began or at least intensified most of the adult storylines (resulting in several deaths). Callie calls her father out on this in "Storytelling". He tries to justify his actions on the difficulty of selling sectionals while “the American family is crumbling.”

    Callie

Callie Sadecki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/callie_qui.jpg
Callie

Portrayed By: Sarah Desjardins

Callie is Shauna and Jeff Sadecki's teenage daughter.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Her dad Jeff usually calls Callie "Cal".
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: She (at first) thinks her parents are indescribably boring and embarrassing, but occasionally lets slip that she does care about them (even if it takes drugs for her to admit it out loud).
Callie: God. I'm so sorry, Mom. It's just, it's just so awful that you had to go through all that.
Shauna: Bad things happen in life. And I'm fine.
Callie: No. But, Mom, but you're not. You're so not fine. Do you think I can't see that?!
  • Babies Make Everything Better: According to "Qui", Shauna had her to save her marriage.
  • Blackmail Backfire:
    • Callie attempts to blackmail her mother after finding out about her affair. Shauna immediately dispels the issue by spelling out exactly what the consequences of that blackmail would be.
    • When interviewed by Kevyn Tan, Callie lies about being seduced by his partner, which would make anything she told him about Shauna inadmissible. Kevyn can tell immediately he's lying and reminds her that lying to the police is a crime. Matt even compliments her sarcastically.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: She's selfish, sarcastic and holds her parents in contempt, at least for season one. Shauna admits to Jackie's parents that she doesn't like her own daughter.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Upon finding out her mother is cheating on her father, she tries to blackmail her, but backs off when Shauna points out the financial and personal cost Callie herself will endure, which she hasn't considered.
  • Extremely Protective Child: She starts off as a bratty and unpleasant teenager, but quickly gets on her parents' side to protect them from prison, even implying that Jay slept with her to stop them from being able to question her. In "Storytelling", she grabs her mother's gun and saves Shauna from being sacrificed by shooting Lottie.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Despite being underage, she gets very drunk on Halloween and takes drugs, being pretty out of it when Shauna finds her in a club.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: She starts off as the 'heel' against Shauna, then shows some sympathy, and this gets inverted when Shauna pulls an Eviler than Thou by blackmailing her into keeping her affair with Adam secret. The first half of Season 2 has her on the 'face' side by growing suspicious of Adam's disappearance, correctly guessing that she's the murderer, but she then switches to 'heel' again by lying to the police and trying to help her parents cover it all up (though this time for more heroic reasons).
  • Hidden Depths: Starts off just a bratty daughter, but shows genuine intelligence in her keen skepticism of Adam and research into his (nonexistent) artist background.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Ends up dating a guy she met at a bar, lying to him that she's of age. He's actually an undercover cop.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: She may be sarcastic and sulky, but she's right both that Shauna knows hardly anything about Adam and that Shauna can hardly chastise her for not keeping her voice down about Adam when she slept with him at their house.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: One of her earliest scenes has Shauna begging for a conversation where Callie does not look at her phone at all. She continues talking while on it.
  • Smug Snake: Callie thinks she's a lot savvier than she really is. Her most devious action, blackmailing her mother, is shut down right out of the gate.
  • Took a Level in Badass: When Callie thinks Charlotte will hurt Shauna, she shoots her.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Callie starts off as Jeff and Shauna's bratty daughter, but becomes much more understanding and sympathetic as Season 2 progresses.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Callie only starts spending quality time with her parents after her mother is honest with her. Then, after lying to a cop about an affair in order to protect her mother from murder charges, Callie sheepishly asks if she "fixed it." When Shauna says she did well, she joyfully skips out of the room.
  • You Remind Me of X: Shauna never explicitly says it, but it's clear that Callie reminds her (unpleasantly) of Jackie. Ironically, she becomes a lot more like Shauna as the story goes on.

The Abara-Turner Family

    Simone

Simone Abara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/simone_2_1.jpg

Portrayed By: Rukiya Bernard

Simone is Taissa's wife. They have a son, Sammy.

  • Convenient Coma: Taissa drives her car into traffic as Simone threatens her to get help and resign her position. She's then in a coma for most of Season 2.
  • Foil: To Taissa. Simone attends a teacher conference and worries when told Sammy's having trouble making friends. Taissa is dismissive. After he hits another boy in the playground, Taissa is angry that her opponent's campaign may be upsetting the boy. Simone is more concerned about their child hitting another.
  • Only Sane Man: Of the Abara-Turner family. Taissa is a literally power-hungry dog-killer and Sammy is traumatized by it, showing violent behavior. That just leaves Simone.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Her reaction when she realizes Taissa killed their dog.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Like her wife, Simone's a Black lesbian.

    Sammy

Sammy Abara-Turner

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lil_sammy_7.jpg

Portrayed By: Aiden Stoxx

Taissa and Simone's son.

  • The Cassandra: The word "SPILL" is scrawled in red paint in front of the Abara-Turner home, and a pail of red paint is found under his bed. Simone and Taissa asked him why he did it, and reassure him that nobody will get mad at him, he just has to tell the truth. He says that the "bad one", "the lady in the tree", did it. Neither of his moms believes him. But he is not lying. Taissa is "the lady in the tree".
  • Hide Your Children: Sammy has entirely disappeared from the show, presumably staying with Taissa or Simone's family, but it's enabled Taissa to leave him and her comatose wife.
  • Troubled Child: When he transfers to a new school, the teacher reports he has trouble making friends. His bedroom window is covered in scary drawings of angry eyes and other things so that "the lady in the tree" cannot see him. He later hits another little boy on the playground (not unusual in itself) and then tears up his doll in a disturbing fashion after Taissa takes it away temporarily as punishment. It turns out that he has good reason to be troubled - his own mother is apparently the sleepwalking lady in the tree and the stress of her campaign and everything else has been causing her to neglect him. Not only this, but he dotes on the family's pet dog, Biscuit, who was apparently killed by Taissa in a sleepwalking episode, his head chopped off, though he only believes the dog to be lost.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: While the likeliest answer is that he's with Simone's family, Sammy has disappeared for most of Season 2. He's last seen waiting in a school office for Taissa, who disappears to go and be with Van.

Other Characters

    Kevyn

Detective Kevyn Tan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kevyn.jpg

Portrayed By: Alex Wyndham (adult); Charlie Wright (teen)

In 1996, Kevyn Tan was Natalie's best friend, sharing her taste in music. In 2021, his musical aspirations dashed, he is now a detective trying to reconnect with Nat.

  • By-the-Book Cop: He confronts Natalie when he realizes his service weapon is missing a bullet because he has to account for every bullet. He sees right through the flimsy excuse Natalie gives him since she can't tell him that she went on an unsuccessful caper with Taissa and Shauna to catch the blackmailer and calls her bluff.
  • invoked It's Popular, Now It Sucks!: A flashback shows him as having soured on Nirvana after they'd "gone mainstream." He liked them better when he felt like it was just him and Natalie listening to them.
  • Nice Guy: Kevyn seems like one of the few genuine nice characters in the series. It's too bad for him he hooked up with Natalie, who is seemingly irreparably damaged by her time in the woods.
  • Old Cop, Young Cop: He is older than his partner Matt Saracusa, a.k.a. "Jay" and is often seen trying to rein him in.
  • Sympathetic Inspector Antagonist: Seems poised to become this in Season 2, as he realizes Shauna is the most likely suspect in Adam's disappearance. However, he appears somewhat disposed to slow-roll the case, much to his partner's frustration.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Accepting a drink from someone that he's only just met and whose affiliations he has no idea of? Yeah, that wasn't going to end well.

    Jessica

Jessica Roberts

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jessica_roberts.jpg

Portrayed By: Rekha Sharma

An alleged reporter trying to obtain the story of what happened to the team during the 19 months spent in the Canadian wilderness.

  • Ambiguously Evil: Jessica tells Misty that she's a "fixer" and she has done bad things. Quite how literal she's being is left up for interpretation.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Jessica has been abducted and is being interrogated by Misty.
Misty: I want you to tell me the truth.
Jessica: OK. Your haircut is unflattering.
  • The Fixer: By Jessica's own admission, she's more than a private detective; she's a fixer for a wealthy and amoral clientele. Of course, she might have just been lying to Misty.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Though calling her a "friend" might be a stretch, Taissa has hired her and she doesn't come cheap. However, Taissa seems unconcerned by never having heard from her for weeks.
  • Intrepid Reporter: She presents herself as a reporter trying to convince the Yellowjackets to sell their story, but Shauna is unable to find any bylines or information on Jessica's supposed career. Ultimately, it turns out that she is not actually a reporter at all, but rather a Private Detective hired by Taissa to make sure none of the former teammates are revealing secrets they swore to keep.
  • Jerkass: She's not especially pleasant, often acting smug and superior.
  • Nerves of Steel: Jessica is not easily intimidated: even when Misty has her trapped in her basement, she shows little fear, snarks back and eventually starts manipulating her own captor.
  • Not Quite Saved Enough: Jessica manages to flee from Misty, saving her life—but she asks for a cigarette and Misty (reluctantly) gives them back to her. She's poisoned them.
  • Must Have Nicotine: Her smoking habit proves to be her undoing, when Misty injects her cigarettes with...something.
  • Private Detective: She's actually a private detective working for Taissa. More specifically, she describes herself as a "fixer" for the rich and famous.
  • Underestimating Badassery: She doesn't take Misty's threats seriously and refuses to see her as a danger until it's a little too late. First she gets kidnapped. She thinks that she manipulated Misty into letting her go, but as she drives away, she starts getting dizzy. She realizes Misty injected something into her cigarettes right before dying at the wheel.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Kinda. Jessica is more or less confirmed dead, but her body has still not been found.

    Adam

Adam Martin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adam_yellowjackets_2.jpeg
"I guess I didn't make much of an impression."

Portrayed By: Peter Gadiot

A body shop owner and artist, who starts dating Shauna after they have a minor auto collision.

    Allie

Allie Stevens

Allie in 1996

Allie in 2021

Portrayed By: Tonya Cornelisse (adult), Pearl Amanda Dickson (Teen)

A member of the Yellowjackets who wasn't on the flight due to being benched after Taissa broke her leg

  • Ambiguous Situation: Whether Taissa actually broke her leg on purpose or not is unknown.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Possibly as much as Misty, as her shitty attitude and poor performance became an annoyance to her teammates. Taissa even calls her a liability.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In the pilot episode, when the team is getting ready for a pep rally, she's lamenting that she, the only one in her class that got invited to prom, is going to miss it due to nationals. Van, who is painting Allie's face for the rally, tries to cheer her up. Allie's response is to be rude to Van, reminding her that nobody invited her.
  • It's All About Me: She constantly makes the crash about herself despite not being on the flight. It's implied she’s been doing this for decades.
  • Jerkass: She was a bit of a brat in high school and has become a self-absorbed Attention Whore as an adult.
  • Joisey: Allie is the only character with a stereotypical "Jersey" accent, and it's reflected in her being an irritation who's still stuck in high school.
  • Life Saving Misfortune: Getting her leg broken turns out to be this due to it preventing her from boarding the doomed plane.

    Walter

Walter Tattersall

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/walter_31.jpg
"Come on, people. We all know where this is going. It's always the husband. Unless, that is, it's the mystery lady friend."

Portrayed By: Elijah Wood

A citizen detective. He posts under the handle PuttingTheSickInForensics on citizen detective websites.

  • AM/FM Characterization: He has a taste for musicals just like Misty, which makes for an interesting coincidence. Or is it?
  • Amateur Sleuth: He is introduced in "Friends, Romans, Countrymen" in a voice-only appearance when Misty checks a website for amateur detectives and sees his post. He's been checking into Adam's disappearance and noticed a pattern change in his credit card charges (from basics to things like expensive lingerie and fancy restaurants) that suggests there was a woman in his life. He all but brags about committing mail fraud to find out that information.
  • Animal Motifs: Like Misty, he likes cats, as seen in his phone wallpaper, laptop background, and app for inducing sleep.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Misty rudely ends their investigative partnership and ditches him, he stoically drives away, and we next see him giving a tip to the police about Adam's murder, implying that he's betraying Misty for scorning him. It turns out that he's just as in love with her as ever and is using the tip as a ploy for a grand gesture to help Misty out of her jam.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Evident in "Old Wounds", when he orders eggs and what appears to be Canadian bacon for breakfast, pours maple syrup AND mustard on his eggs, and proceeds to wrap it in the bacon like it is a taco.
  • Crazy-Prepared: In "Digestif", he lets Misty know that if things go badly, "My attorney has instructions." Earlier on, he explains his choice to live on a houseboat:
"Ah, nautical life calls to me. Plus I hate bureaucratic red tape. You never know when you might need to leave the country sans passport."
  • Mirror Character: He's extremely similar to Misty, with a chipper and overly sweet veneer hiding a devious, calculating and utterly ruthless core. They also both share a passion for musicals and mysteries.
  • Unholy Matrimony: He's in love with the equally crazy and ruthless Misty, and she starts referring to him as her boyfriend by the end of the second season.

    Lisa

Lisa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lisa_2_8.jpg

Portrayed By: Nicole Maines

An acolyte who resides in the "intentional community" led by Lottie.

  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: The resulting wound from Natalie attacking her with a fork came close to costing her an eye, but it only leaves three tiny scabs above her cheekbone for a few episodes, which themselves vanish without any lasting trace.
  • Broken Bird: We learn from Lisa's mother that she had suffered from depression for years and attempted suicide at least once.
  • Impaled Palm: Suffers one when Natalie attacks her with a fork in order to escape. The fork came close to making her lose an eye.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Natalie encourages her to keep living for her beloved fish.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": Her beloved fish is called Gilly the 14th, suggesting a few instances of Replacement Goldfish.
  • Morality Pet: For Natalie. Lisa is the only friend Natalie has at Lottie's compound, and bonds with her (and her fish), which enables Natalie to recover somewhat from her depression and cynicism.
  • No Medication for Me: She has depression and used to be on antidepressants. However, being at the community allowed her to wean herself off her meds. Her mom is not happy to hear the news.

    Jay (spoiler character)

"Jay"/Matt Saracusa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jay_spoiler.jpg
"The 'Cuse is loose, baby!"

Portrayed By: John Reynolds

A handsome older guy whom Callie meets in a bar and who lends a sympathetic ear to her family troubles. Unknown to Callie, "Jay" is really Matt Saracusa, Det. Kevyn Tan's junior partner, and he is more interested in learning about Shauna's involvement with Adam Martin.

  • Badass Boast: "She's [Shauna] good, but I am better" when he finds the "evidence" of Shauna's tryst with Randy is just strawberry-scented hand lotion. Kevyn points out that this means his cover as "Jay" has been blown, but Matt is cocky.
  • Hate Sink: Jay is smug, arrogant, and manipulating a teenage girl (Callie) with promises of romance despite knowing full well she's underage. Other characters in the show might have technically done worse, but you would be hard-pressed to find one as universally hated.
  • Old Cop, Young Cop: Younger than his partner Kevyn Tan and more likely to act on impulse:
Kevyn Tan: I know you're new, but they did teach you, without a warrant, nothing's admissible, right?
  • Pornstache: Spots one, as yet another clue that he is older than Callie.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: He continues seeing Callie in order to find out more about her mother's actions, despite the questionable ethics—to say the least— of dating a teenager and playing with her feelings. And despite being reminded by Kevyn that they don't have a warrant or exigent cause, he has no qualms about entering the room where Shauna supposedly had a tryst to find evidence of said tryst.
  • Smug Smiler: Flashes his smirk often, like when Shauna and Callie arrive for questioning.
  • Spotting the Thread: On a date with Callie, he excuses himself to use the bathroom and the server arrives with their bill... in "M. Saracusa"'s name. This leads to her finding out he is a cop.

    Randy

Randy Walsh

Portrayed By: Jeff Holman, Riley Baron (teen)

Jeff's best friend since high school.
  • Butt-Monkey: In the past, he is viewed as a pitiful Dumb Jock. In the present, Shauna threatens to gut him like a fish for helping Jeff to blackmail the surviving Yellowjackets. He is tricked into being interrogated by Walter and Misty and even gets hit.
  • Gag Penis: Randy claims to have one during health education class, when the students are practicing how to put a condom on a banana. He asks if anybody wants his condom, saying he is too big. Van counters this by stretching her condom as far as it goes and telling him to go see the doctor "about that thing" if that is a problem indeed.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: Shauna enlists him to pretend to be her lover, and for that purpose, make sure to leave a used condom in the trash. Except he can't get it up, and has to make do with filling the condom with hand lotion. Strawberry-scented lotion.
  • Undying Loyalty: He is Jeff's friend and is willing to assist Jeff in blackmailing the surviving Yellowjackets. He also agrees to fake evidence of an affair with Shauna to fool the police.
