- All Girls Want Bad Boys: She falls in love with Troubled, but Cute Liam and ends up with him.
- All of the Other Reindeer: In the season 1 finale and most of season 2, she's treated horribly and avoided by everyone, including her friends and her brother.
- Beneath the Mask: Pointed out by Liam saying that the whole good-girl routine that she was displaying in front of him was just a mask covering the frustration, jealousy, rage and anger that she's hiding.
- Betty and Veronica: The Betty to Naomi's Veronica for Ethan's Archie in season 1.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Lampshaded by Liam in season 1, she's act like a volcano.
- Big Damn Heroes: In Season 5, she saved Liam and Vanessa preventing a Liam-obsessed Yandere and taking a shoot instead them
- Break the Cutie: At the end of season 1, she suffers a major fallout from her peers after Naomi falsely accuses her of sleeping with Liam and narcing out to the police about the after-prom party at Naomi's house. Even getting into a hit-and-run accident, resulting in the death of a homeless man who happens to be the uncle of her then-boyfriend Jasper.
- Broken Bird: Slides into this in the beginning of season 2 while still suffering a falling out with her friends, popularity, getting into a hit-and-run accident and having a naked photo of her surfacing around the school in the process.

- Naïve Everygirl: She's well-meaning, and more naive and innocent than her peers, especially at the beginning.

- Lovable Jock: He's a lacrosse player and very nice.
- Naïve Newcomer: At the start of the series.
- New Transfer Student: at the start of the series.
- Nice Guy: Despite his flaws and mistakes, he's a good guy who cares about his friends.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Sensitive Guy to Liam's Manly Man.
- Surfer Dude: he enjoys surfing
- Token Minority: he is the only African-American main character in the series.
Erin Silver
Erin Silver (Jessica Stroup)
- Alcoholic Parent: Her and Kelly's mother.
- Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She's a jaded and cynical teen with dark hair.
- Ambiguously Jewish: She's half-Jewish on her father's side, though it's never brought up.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Silver is a nice girl, but if anyone ever offends her, she would intentionally insult people on her blog call The Vicious Circle by posting mean videos, animated shorts or comments for everyone to see.
- Brainy Brunette: The only girl with brown hair, and she's well-read and intellectual.
- Break the Cutie: In season 1 with her bipolar disorder. Made even worse in the series finale when she's diagnosed with cancer.
- Deadpan Snarker: The character who is more prone to sarcastic remarks.
- Disappeared Dad: Her father doesn't live with her. Unlike her mother, he's almost never mentioned.
- Dude Magnet: She's been romantically involved with the five main men on the show.
- Former Friend of Alpha Bitch: She and Naomi were best friends up until middle school when Naomi betrayed her by telling everyone about her parents' sex tape. Thankfully, they've patched things up at the end of the first season.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Annie.
- Huge School Girl: she is 5'8
- Last-Name Basis: She prefers to be called by her last name Silver, but she doesn't seem to mind when her mother calls her by her first name Erin even though she does call her Silver later episode an the season.
- Tall, Dark, and Snarky: The tallest of the girls and also the snarkiest.

Naomi Clark (Annalynne Mc Cord)
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: With Liam.
- Attention Whore: She's very self-centered and loves being in the spotlight.
- Betty and Veronica: The Veronica to Annie's Betty for Ethan's Archie in season 1.
- Book Dumb: She is more or less average intelligence but it's frequently mentioned that she's a poor student. She is told she might not get into California University because her grades are not good enough. By her own admission, "I am terrible at tests. But I'm an excellent dater."
- Breakout Character: She gets a bigger role in the series by the end.
- Character Development: She developed into a more nicer person during the course of the show, despite having cruel tendencies.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Towards Ethan when he was dating Annie in season 1.
- Deadpan Snarker: She playfully snarks at her friends from time to time.
- Everyone Loves Blondes: Blonde and the most popular girl in the school.
- Evil Former Friend: Of Silver's, but the two finally patch things up at the end of the first season.
- Expy: Of Kelly Taylor from the original series.
- The Fashionista: She has an Unlimited Wardrobe. To the point that everyone is shocked that one time she's seen in a tracksuit.

- The Millstone: She has a bad habit of making things worse whenever she tries to help.

- Rich Bitch: she often brags about her money, and only wears designer clothes.
- Spoiled Brat: A spoiled rich girl and a bit of a brat, before you learn about her Hidden Depths.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Ivy's Tomboy, initially as rivals and later as an Odd Friendship. Naomi is a fashion-obsessed shopaholic and Valley Girl, Ivy is a Passionate Sports Girl who hangs out with the boys and doesn't care about her looks.
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: she switches between these two personalities often.
- Upper-Class Twit: Pretty much a shallow princess who was spoiled her entire life, and acts airheaded at times.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Annie in season 1.
Ethan Ward
Ethan Ward (Dustin Milligan)
- Chick Magnet: Only appears in the first season and manages to attract at least five girls, with three of them being part of the core cast.
- The Generic Guy: The reason why nobody really missed when he left.
- Lovable Jock: A top athlete and good person.
- Nice Guy: Has a reputation for being nice and responsible.
- Put on a Bus: He moves to Montana in season 2. He only lasted only one season without having any character development at all and is never mentioned again throughout the show's run.
Adrianna Tate-Duncan
Adrianna Tate-Duncan (Jessica Lowndes)
- Ascended Extra: She was billed as a recurring character in season 1, but became a series regular in the second season.
- Broken Ace: In the first season, she was on top of the popularity food chain with her career as an actress, but dealt with a lot of drama with her drug addiction and her unplanned pregnancy.
- Character Development: She started off as a troubled actress in the first season who struggled with her drug addiction and her pregnancy, but in the later seasons, she gotten better and is no longer the "Drama Adrianna" we knew before.
- Childhood Friend Romance: Navid was in love with her since he was a child. They end up together.
- Disappeared Dad: Her father is almost never mentioned.
- Former Child Star: her mother pressures her into pursuing the fame she once had as a child.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: In season 3, her friends start getting tired of her and she eventually loses her boyfriend and all her friendships because of her horrible behavior. She gets better in the final season.
- Give Him a Normal Life: She gave her daughter Maisie up for adoption after giving birth to her.
- Happily Ever After: With Navid.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Naomi.
- Like Brother and Sister: With Liam.
- Manipulative Bitch: She was called this by Silver after she leaked a demo of Michaela's song and says that she hasn't changed a bit since high school.
- Prom Baby: She gives birth to her daughter Maisie on prom night.
- Promotion to Opening Titles: In season 2.
- Recovered Addict: after she finishes rehab in season 1.
- Reformed, but Rejected: Despite saying that she's changed her ways, she's coldly rejected by her friends in season 4 after her fallout with fame and swapping Silver's bipolar medication with unknown meds.
- Teen Pregnancy: In season 1, she becomes pregnant with her daughter Maisie after a one-night stand with Ty.
- Token Evil Teammate: Becomes this in season 3, especially after her biggest Kick the Dog moment.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: In season 3 with her newfound fame.
Navid Shirazi
Navid Shirazi (Michael Steger)
- Betty and Veronica: The Betty to Teddy's Veronica for Adrianna's Archie. Later the Archie to Silver's Betty (the girl he has more in common with) and Adrianna's Veronica (who becomes a snobby diva in season 3).
- Beware the Nice Ones: Normally friendly, but he has a mean streak when he gets angry.
- Childhood Friend Romance: Navid was in love with Adrianna since he was a child. They end up together.
- Happily Ever After: With Adrianna.
- Jewish and Nerdy: Persian Jewish and the nerdiest character.
- Nice Guy: Especially in early seasons, he's one of the kindest and most loyal character.
- School Newspaper News Hound: He was the head of The Blaze at West Bev High.
- Token Minority: he is of Iranian descent.
Liam Court
Liam Court (Matt Lanter)
- Abusive Parents: His stepfather is verbally abusive and his mother does nothing to defend him.
- Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Brooding Boy to Annie's Gentle Girl.
- The Charmer: Due his bad boy charm.
- Chick Magnet: He's hardly ever short of female attention. This becomes especially common in season 4 when he becomes a model.
- Expy: Shares some aspects with Dylan McKay.
- Freudian Excuse: He's been abused by his stepfather so many times, which could be the reason for his bad boy behaviour.
- Happily Ever After: With Annie in the finale.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his tough, hostile exterior, he is a loyal, caring guy.
- Like Brother and Sister: With Adrianna.
- Lonely Rich Kid: Although he's lonely due to Parental Neglect, he wasn't always rich. His family was actually poor, until his mother marries a rich Jerkass.
- Mr. Fanservice: He gets a lot of shirtless scenes.
- Promotion to Opening Titles: In season 2.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Dixon's Sensitive Guy.
- Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Relatively tall, and an extremely handsome Pretty Boy.
- Tall, Dark, and Snarky: He was especially snarky in season 1, before he Took a Level in Kindness.
- Took a Level in Kindness: In season 2 he starts to show his nicer, sensitive side.
- Troubled, but Cute: A reformed bad boy with Parental Issues who is still gorgeous and popular with girls.
Teddy Montgomery

- Betty and Veronica: The Veronica to Navid's Betty for Adrianna's Archie.
- The Casanova: Was a known womanizer in season 2, before his relationship with Silver and (later) his Coming-Out Story.
- Coming-Out Story: In season 3, he comes to terms with his sexuality, which is accepted by his friends.
- Iconic Sequel Character: Introduced in season 2, but eventually becomes part of the core cast.
- Lady Killer In Love: His serious relationship with Silver in season 2 was genuine, although they later realize they are Better as Friends for obvious reasons.
- Missing Mom: Like Silver, he also lost his mother to cancer to the show's prior.
- Nice Guy: Although he was less nice in his early appearances, he's definitely shown to be a good guy for the most part.
- Pretty Boy: He's blonde, good-looking, and aware of it.
- Promotion to Opening Titles: In season 2.
- Remember the New Guy?: He was first introduced in season 2 as Adrianna's first boyfriend from her past.
- Straight Gay: He's gay but has no flamboyant traits.
Ivy Sullivan

- Ascended Extra: In season 2 she is a recurring character who occasionally hangs out with Liam and serves as a rival to Naomi. In season 3, she's part of the core cast.

- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: She disappeared in season 5 without explanation.
- Disappeared Dad: her dad is not really in her life, as her parents are divorced, and her dad is remarried with a new family.

- Cool Big Sister: To Naomi, initially. However, when she learns that Mr. Cannon raped Naomi, she threatened to kill him.
- Manipulative Bitch: Kelly Taylor sees her for who she is. Her acts of manipulation include convincing Naomi that Annie had slept with Liam when in fact it was her, strung Ryan around when she wasn't really interested in him, and coaxed Naomi into sending an embarrassing photo of Annie to the entire school. And this is only in season 2.

- Really Gets Around: She had multiple partners on the show.
