Main Characters

    Tropes that applies to both
  • Amnesiac Hero: Continuing the Running Gag with protagonists, they lost their memories prior to the beginning of the game.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: They're easygoing and very nice people, but put anyone they care about or Rigbarth in danger and you'll be in for a lot of trouble.
  • Deadpan Snarker: There are some truly sarcastic answers they can give when some dialogue options appear.
  • Demonic Possession: After ridding the fish-like Fathomless Dread from Radea, it then possesses the protagonist.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Like the previous Rune Factory protagonists, they have an affinity for monsters.
  • Good Parents: Considering the twins wanted to make accessories to show thanks for all their parents have done for them.
  • Green Thumb: Being an Earthmate and all that. This applies to the game too: if they harvest, or are around when their monsters are harvesting their crops the soil will grow, becoming "stronger".
  • Growing Up Sucks: Played for laughs. Hina sometimes complains she had to had "naptime" while they'll duly note how much she will wish she had naptimes when she grows up.
  • Like a Duck Takes to Water:
    • Many people mention they're a natural at farming which isn't surprising since both are Earthmates.
    • They pick up on the were-animal language after only a short conversation with Fuuka. There's no indication they pick up on how to speak it immediately, but thanks to the mutual understanding of what each other is saying this mostly removes the language barrier between them despite speaking two different languages. Should you have them marry her, one of the proposal options is in that language.
  • Magic Knight: They can wield magic and weapons readily in combat.
  • Mysterious Past: A dialogue with Terry after the main story is finished reveals he's been trying to dig up their past. Sadly, he couldn't find much. Even Terry is baffled at how little he's managed to find out about Ares/Alice and he has no idea why.
  • Multi-Melee Master: They can learn and master how to use several weapons: Short Swords, Longswords, Spears, Hammers, Axes and Dual Blades.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: As they befriend the people of Rigbarth at least Darroch and Heinz invite them to work for them should something go wrong with their job at SEED. On a more serious note, they quit SEED after being deluded with the organization with the revelation that SEED was behind some of the monster attacks and one of its leaders was responsible for it at the end of Chapter 1. Terry offers them a new form of employment in his Detective Agency during their time away from SEED.
  • Renaissance Man/Woman: Like all protagonists before them they have potential to become this, going from some amnesiac nobody to experts in farming, monster taming, combat, crafting, and then some.
  • Still Wearing the Old Colors: They can keep wearing their SEED uniform during their 10-Minute Retirement. Since it's more of a recession to clear their mind of doubts than outright quitting, it's a bit more understandable.
  • World's Strongest Man/Woman: Get their weapon skills high enough and Reinhard, a seasoned knight, will claim that you're on par with the best warriors in Norad. Get them even higher and he'll admit you're quite possibly among the most skilled warriors in the world.

The male protagonist. He is an amnesiac who is welcomed into the town of Rigbarth after rescuing a young girl. There, he joins an organization of peacekeeping rangers known as "SEED". Similar to Alice, he's eager to help those in need, but can sometimes be a bit of an airhead.

  • Bookworm: Several dialogues between him, Cecil and Priscilla mentions he likes to read regardless of what option you choose.
  • Idiot Hair: He has a prominent ahoge that sticks out from underneath his ranger cap.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Befitting his kind personality and somewhat airheaded nature.
  • Nice Guy: A good-natured young man that can't say no to people who need his help.
  • Gendered Outfit: Alice and Ares are for the most part wearing the same outfit with the exact same armor, but whereas Alice has a skirt with short shorts underneath, all colored pink, Ares dresses in blue and wears more masculine knee length shorts.
  • Too Many Belts: The cuffs of his pants legs, for whatever reason appear to be belts, though Alice is hit slightly harder with this.
  • Zipperiffic: His shorts also have zippers going down the full length of each side where a seam would normally go.

The female protagonist. She is an amnesiac who is welcomed into the town of Rigbarth after rescuing a young girl. There, she joins an organization of peacekeeping rangers known as "SEED". Similar to Ares, she's eager to help those in need and can sometimes be a little overbearing, due to her curious personality.

  • Action Girl: Just like Sonja and Frey, Alice is the female protagonist of Rune Factory 5 who is no less capable of fighting in dangerous dungeons.
  • Nice Girl: Alice is described as a kind-hearted young girl at heart that genuinely enjoys helping others.
  • Gendered Outfit: Ares and Alice are for the most part wearing the same outfit with the exact same armor, but whereas Ares has boyish knee shorts and is dressed in blue, Alice dresses in pink and wears shorts under a skirt instead.
  • Too Many Belts: Unlike Ares, the belt on her waist is purely decorative, in addition to having belts for the cuffs of her short shorts.
  • Zipperiffic: She has a zipper running around the bottom of her skirt for no particular reason.

    Children

Elias, Ivan, Conan

Erica, Iris, Collette

Voiced by: Ayaka Saito (JP: Elias), Yuri Noguchi (JP: Ivan, Erica), Momo Ishibashi (JP: Conan), Hitomi Ohwada (JP: Iris), Yukiko Motoyoshi (JP: Colette), Rachelle Heger (EN: Elias, Colette), Erica Mendez (EN: Ivan), Laura Post (EN: Conan, Erica), Xanthe Huynh (EN: Iris)

The offspring of the player and one of the marriage candidates; the player can choose whether to have a boy or a girl, or leave it up to chance. The player can also have twins after the first child, which will always be a boy and a girl. There are 3 personality types for each gender with designated hairstyles and default names: Elias (charismatic boy), Ivan (energetic boy), Conan (gentle boy), Erica (high-spirited girl), Iris (proper girl), and Colette (quiet girl).

  • Badass Adorable: The children can fight alongside the player.
  • Born of Magic: For same-sex marriages, the player and their spouse make a wish to the Big Tree to have a child, and three weeks later, the wish is granted and the couple receives their child (or twins the second time) from the tree.
  • Brainy Baby: Some of the twins' scenarios show they're aware of their big brother or sister getting praise from their parents and demand attention.
  • Company Cross References: Collette shares a name with a character from Rune Factory 3. Iris also was the name of one of the characters in Rune Factory Frontier.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Vegetable Juice and Vegetable Smoothies. Strangely they'll accept other dishes containing vegetables as well as the vegetables themselves.
  • Eyes Always Shut: They never open their eyes when they're babies, although there is artwork of a baby groggily opening their eyes.
  • Flowers of Femininity: All three girl options wear orange flower decorations in their hair.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: The first child always inherits Ares/Alice's blonde hair, and they're a sweet and innocent child.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Each personality type has a default name, but the player can change it.
  • Nobody Poops: Averted since they're babies.
    • Scarlett's twins scenario has Ares/Alice changing their diapers.
    • Reinhard's twins scenario has them seeking attention with the parents worried they were in a good mood and wonder if they need to be changed.
  • Not Allowed to Grow Up: Zigzagged with the first child. They do grow up from baby to young child, but stop aging once the twins are born, making them look like a triplet rather than an older sibling.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: The boys wear blue overalls, while the girls wear pink dresses.
  • Proper Lady: Iris (the proper girl) aspires to be one when she grows up, and tends to speak a little more formally than the other children.
  • Superior Successor: If the player marries Martin, Darroach mentions during the twins' smithy event they have "a better sense of smithing" than him.
  • Uneven Hybrid: If the player marries Scarlett, Fuuka, Ludmila, Murakumo, or Ryker, the children don't carry their non-human traits. The only sign is the twins inheriting their hair color.

Bachelorettes

    Priscilla

Priscilla

"I want to change... No, I WILL change!"
Voiced by: Inori Minase (JP), Megan Taylor Harvey (EN)

A sweet ray of sunshine who was born and raised in Rigbarth. Tends to make many mistakes in her day-to-day life, but people forgive her due to her kind and cheerful nature. Prepares well in advance for any event, making her surprisingly dependable. Some past incident has left her too terrified to leave town, but she wants to overcome this fear.

  • Caring Gardener: She's the one who teaches Ares/Alice the basics of farming and once your skill is high enough she'll compliment on how good you've become at it, eventually surpassing her with Priscilla saying she should be taking farming lessons from you instead.
  • Crazy-Prepared: In some conversations, Priscilla mentions packing tons of things for outings, such as rations, sleeping bags, first aid kits, medicine, and so-on, as she's worried that she'll either get badly hurt, catch a deadly cold, or get lost in the wilderness... while out on walks in town or going on picnics with friends. Even Ares/Alice are baffled at her overpreparedness, trying to get her to calm and tone it down a bit.
  • Cute Bookworm: She loves a good book, and she's shy and retiring to go with it.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Priscilla is prone to making mistakes but is forgiven due to her sweet and innocent personality.
  • The Cynic: A very, very downplayed example, but she always expects the worst outcome when going out and prepares accordingly.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Something happened to her that caused her to fear leaving town.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Fish and squids get a negative response from her. It's enough for her normally peppy self to get in a sullen mood during the Catch Most Fish and Catch Most Squid festivals.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: If Ares/Alice starts dating her, she'll change up her appearance for their first date and let her hair down.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: She's confident in her cooking abilities, especially when it comes to sweets. Being Elsje's sister also helps.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: You cannot enter Belpha Ruins (barring Beatrice and Reinhard's living quarters) while she's a party member. This is tied to the accident that made her scared to leave town and related to the protagonist's memory loss. She can travel to other dungeons just fine which is justified in one of her events where she mentions she feels safe when she has someone with her.
  • Healing Hands: Priscilla can use the Medi class spells and CureAll.
  • Hidden Depths: Lucy mentions Priscilla can be surprisingly stubborn at times.
  • Irony: Priscilla envies Lucy for being strong and not being afraid of anything... Unaware of her friend's Tomboy Angst and Guilt Complex.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: If she begins dating the protagonist, she'll offer to start wearing her hair down for them, as a sign of the two of them growing closer together and her opening up to the protagonist.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: She has a very long hair and braids it herself. If she starts dating Ares/Alice she can let it down.
  • Magic Knight: Her default weapon is an Amethyst Rod.
  • Nice Girl: She's openly friendly to about everyone in Rigbarth and rarely, if ever, has anything negative to say about other people.
  • Pen Pals: With Lucy, even though they live in the same town and meet each other daily. Priscilla just likes writing letters and Lucy mentions she is really good at it, saying they read like a poem.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She's a kind girl and her hair is soft pink denoting her demure personality compared to, say, Fuuka.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Despite her demure behaviour you can invite her to your party and she's capable of using magic spells to fight.
  • Sweet Baker: She's very good at making sweets, and if given lots of homemade gifts, she returns the favor by giving back baked goods. She's also very kind. It's also possible for her to become hired by Yuki and Randolph to work in the bakery.
  • Sweet Tooth: Sweets are listed among her liked gifts. One of her dialogues mentions she's preparing to bake lots of sweets for the weekend.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: All the romance novels she's read have given her a decidedly rose-tinted outlook on love, and in one of her romance events, she even has you put on a play alongside her where she casts Alice/Ares as her Love Interest as her shy way of stating her interest in them.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The gentle-natured Rose-Haired Sweetie girly girl to Lucy's outspoken and lively tomboy.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Chocolate Cake.

    Scarlett

Scarlett

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scarlett_02.png
"Rules are rules!"
Voiced by: Aya Suzaki (JP), Erica Mendez (EN)

A half-elf, half-human SEED ranger currently on a long-distance assignment in Rigbarth. Her life goal is to be just like her father. Always does things by the book, to the point of being excessive. Absolutely hates hearing a story without an end or changing the subject before finishing a conversation. A bit rigid and stuck in her ways, although she feels conflicted about whether that's for the best.

  • Action Girl: Out of all characters Scarlett is the one that's most involved in the main story, appearing several times during dangerous situations.
  • Berserk Button: Breaking the rules is the most obvious one and troublemakers like Ludmila that give her a hard time in Rigbarth. She also really doesn't like when you start a conversation and cut it short for whatever reason.
  • Bookworm: In her spare time, Scarlett loves to read different kinds of books. In her conversations, when it's suggested that she to look at things in a different perspective, she often mentions how she "didn't find it in the manual".
  • By-the-Book Cop: Firmly follows the rules and code of the SEED. She isn't inflexible, however.
  • The Comically Serious: She's very professional and composed, but that only makes it even funnier when anything breaks her normally super-serious demeanour. Even when Scarlett herself does it (and sometimes she doesn't notice).
  • Crutch Character: In a sense. By the time Scarlett can join you she can use Recovery Potions which heals for 800 HP (a considerable amount at the time), but as you make progress in the game the amount her potions heals becomes irrelevant. Scarlett still remains being always a powerful melee combatant, however.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Her mother passed away when she was very young, but she remembers her very fondly and is one of the reasons why she became a member of SEED.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen:
    • Does not accept the protagonist as a SEED member at first and challenges them to solve the incident of Rune energy disruption in Kelve Lava Caves: If she wins, the protagonist leaves SEED. If they win, she'll accept them. She becomes a lot less stern afterwards. Even more so as you befriend her: Scarlett will remain serious, but become more open and even do little things like fix Ares/Alice crooked collar for them.
    • A good part of her events is about Scarlett warming up to Ares/Alice and most of them has her sharing bits of her past and why she decided to become a SEED ranger. Scarlett herself notices this mentioning that whenever she stays near them she tends to speak more than she should.
  • Dual Wielding: In her character trailer, she is seen equipped with dual blades in battle, which is her preferred weapon type in the game.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: As a member of SEED she can use the Seal magic to constrict enemies.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: During one of her events, she's gotten stuck while put together a patternless puzzle, and asks the protagonist for their help in solving it. However, the image of the puzzle the game shows is the same generic puzzle that always lives on the table in her room, and none of the dialogue options over which to solve it correspond to the actual puzzle displayed on-screen.
  • Glass Cannon: Her Dual Blades turn her into a very powerful character in close combat, but lacking a shield for defense means she'll take a lot more damage, especially in late game.
  • Graceful Loser: Declares herself the loser of the challenge she issued the player since she fell to Oswald and his Basilisk first, despite the protagonist pointing out they only captured Oswald with her help. On a lighter note if your Seal spell skill, Capture, is high enough she's miffed that people mistake her skill for yours and, when you get it even higher, at 100, Scarlett sincerely congratulate you saying you're way above her with the Seal spell.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Very much a rule follower. One possible dialogue is asking the player what they think of rule breakers. If the player answers it depends on the situation, she points out if they expect citizens to follow the rules, they need to obey them themselves and breaking the rules is a slippery slope.
  • Hidden Depths: Even with her seriousness and competence Scarlett has bad dreams of losing her job. As you befriend her she eventually worries if she's nagging too much on you.
  • In the Blood: She became a ranger and joined SEED just like her father. Her strong code of morals also comes from him as he was one of the people who rallied others to protect people after the collapse of the Sechs Empire, even before SEED was formed.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Her uneasiness to accept Ares/Alice into SEED is understandable given the seriousness of her job: SEED rangers are tasked with protecting people from all sorts of threats and must go through several exams in order to be accepted. Ares/Alice had zero training beforehand and were essentially civilians conscripted into SEED by Livia seemingly out of blue— Scarlett had every reason to be distrustful of them.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Give her a few gifts, something she likes or equipment, and she might make the same joke of not accepting bribes that Livia makes. Another joke, once you're close enough to her, is that she wants to tie you to her so you can patrol the same areas together, because some days she feels time doesn't pass when she's patrolling on her own.
    • An event has Murakumo chasing a con artist for accusing the protagonist of taking a non-existent seventh gem. Livia and Scarlett basically ignore the guy's pleas for help with the former asking if the latter hears anything and the brushing it off as just the wind.
    • Scarlett isn't above using Loophole Abuse in extreme cases like in Ryker's romance event.
  • Outside Man, Inside Man: As an established member of SEED before the game starts, Scarlett is the inside man to the protagonist's outside man.
  • Pointy Ears: Due to her half-elf heritage.
  • The Rival: Declares herself to be one to Ares/Alice after they prove themselves worth of being a SEED ranger. It's more of a friendly competition than anything else and Scarlett will be always very proud of their accomplishments and growth.
  • Rules Lawyer: Seems to know the SEED manual, laws and code of conduct, letter-by-letter. One of her dialogues has Ares/Alice dumbfolded at the thickness of the book and that Scarlett even recommends a reference book for the rule's book. Her deep knowledge of laws comes into play more than once in other people's events.
  • Schedule Fanatic: Scarlett has a strict mindset of keeping everything she has to do planned ahead and not finishing anything, even her puzzles, leaves her severely peeved about it to the point she can even lose her focus or her sleep. Doing things on the fly is something she thoroughly dislikes.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Tempura dishes, as well as rice dishes. Scarlett also enjoy healthy meals like Boiled Spinach.
  • Workaholic: Could give even Martin a run for his money. She's very serious about her job even though Livia tries to make her lighten up a bit.
  • Worthy Opponent: Non-villainous example. Later on Scarlett admits Ares/Alice started as her junior, but that they eventually become their rival.

    Lucy

Lucy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucy_100.png
"Hmm... What to do? Rock-paper-scissors?"
Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi (JP), Erica Lindbeck (EN)

A childhood friend of Priscilla who's always there to cheer her up and make sure she doesn't find herself in any dangerous situations. Loves physical activity, hates losing, and constantly challenges the protagonist to competitions. She's in high spirits all the time and gets along with just about everybody, but quickly grows lonely without any company.

  • Blood Knight: Downplayed compared to most examples, but she's one of the more enthusiastic party members in combat.
  • Competition Freak: She loves a challenge, and has a habit of challenging the protagonist to competitions over mundane activities. Her not challenging Ares/Alice to something is a sign she's not all there.
  • Declaration of Protection: Vows to herself to protect her little brother and Priscilla. Lucy blames herself for causing Priscilla's trauma of going outside town. When Julian gets badly hurt in Lucy's marriage event, Lucy makes the difficult decision to break up with the protagonist, feeling that her love for them is interfering with her ability to uphold her vows.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Less so than Scarlett, but Lucy starts off pretty standoffish towards Ares/Alice.
  • Disappeared Dad: He works as a traveling archaeologist, so he's never actually around. He does send gifts home, which plays into her events.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Lucy can cook well, but she still thinks her food is bland compared to Priscilla's.
  • Genki Girl: Lucy has an energetic and lively personality.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Giving her a monkey plush shield can boost your friendship with her.
  • Guilt Complex: She holds a lot of worries to herself not wanting to bother others with her problems. When it comes to people she cares about getting hurt, she shoulders guilt over not being able to prevent it, even though other characters point out none of it was actually her fault.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Her weapons are Short Swords and she starts out with a Steel Sword.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Sometimes she complains that Julian wants to do everything by himself and is too proud to ask for help. One has to wonder where her little brother got that from. Hilariously enough Ares/Alice will comment under their breath she should follow her own advice.
  • Hidden Depths: She's surprisingly good at convincing people. In Fuuka's Hide and Seek event she manages to convince Reinhard and Ryker, both who are not willing to partake in the event at all, with the right commentaries: saying Reinhard is trying a little too hard to hide his secrets (hence why he'd be good at hide and seek) and needling Ryker's ego forcing him to admit he'd be dead last if he did not participate.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Warns the player not to upset Priscilla or else they'll have her to deal with. In one conversation it's a one-sided warning, in another conversation it's duly noted by them.
  • Insecure Love Interest: When the protagonist confesses to her, she's hesitant to respond and asks what he likes about her. There are a few instances where she compares herself unfavorably to the more feminine Priscilla. This comes to a head in her wedding event where she breaks up with the protagonist to uphold her vow to protect Julian and Priscilla. However upon doing so, she realizes that she had hurt the protagonist and believes that she no longer deserves to be loved by them.
  • Jack of All Stats: Well-balanced in terms of offense and defense in combat due to her main weapon being a Short Sword, so she gets full benefit from shields. As she levels up Lucy learns more Rune Abilities to deal damage to enemies as well.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: As the amnesiac protagonist is brought to town from passing out while saving Hina, Lucy in her own words raises a red flag that they are a stranger and might be "a wolf in wooly's clothing". When brought downstairs for a Soulsphere check, she gives a harsh warning to the protagonist about not trying anything funny.
  • Jerkass Realization: After some time, she realizes she was wrong about the protagonist and is apologetic for her distrusting behavior.
  • Meaningful Gift: Being an avid fisher she really likes being gifted high grade fishing poles and really rare fishes like Glittering Snappers.
  • The Rival: Self-declared one to the protagonist.
  • Stepford Smiler: Keeps a smile on her face, even when she's sad, to avoid worrying others. After breaking up with the protagonist in her romance event, she can't even bring herself to force a smile, worrying Priscilla.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Snapper dishes. She mentions that the fish can be prepared in many ways.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The active and energetic tomboy to Priscilla's gentle, girly girl.
  • Tomboy Angst: She has some insecurities about not being as skilled as Priscilla at feminine things like cooking and sewing.
  • Truth Serums: She receives a cursed mirror as a gift from her father that functions as such, causing her to be uncharacteristically honest with her feelings. Before finding out the true nature of the mirror she also shows it to Martin, Reinhard, and Randolph who in turn end up stubbornly and openly trying to emulate Darroch's work habits or admitting to incredibly minor and poorly hidden secrets they're keeping from Beatrice and Yuki respectively. This comes into play later to get her to admit why she's been closing herself off to the protagonist.
  • Youthful Freckles: She has these on her cheeks, befitting her energetic personality. One amusing day-to-day conversation, once her FP is high enough, has Ares/Alice complimenting her freckles which makes Lucy feel very embarrassed.

    Fuuka

Fuuka (JP: Fuqua)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fuuka.png
"*cheerful growl* (I'm hungry!)"
Voiced by: Aki Toyosaki (JP), Cristina Vee (EN)

A were-animal traveler who drifted from country to country until she finally ended up in Rigbarth. Experienced many hardships in her life but has reached a point where she can laugh them off. As a second language learner, she's gradually picking up human speech. Honest to a fault and can tell when someone's lying by instinct alone, even with a language barrier.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Ares/Alice does it unintentionally in a day-to-day conversation trying to fix Fuuka's bed hair. Fuuka is surprisingly ok with it even complimenting them. It gets a lot less funny in one of her dating events where this surprises her enough to instinctively and accidentally claw Ares/Alice lightly in the face, much to her own horror and shame.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Fuuka is obsessed with shiny things, literally or figuratively, and will attempt to touch them given half the chance even when told not to. One of her events has her getting scolded by Martin and Darroch for nearly burning herself in the forge. And this behavior caused her to unleash a creature that has been hunting her ever since to devour her joy, and of everyone around her, causing her to wander from place to place whenever its black fog could be seen for three days straight.
  • Battle Cry: Often growls when fighting. She will also howl when using her Rune Abilities.
  • Big Eater: Has a healthy appetite and will compliment your Eating skill if it's high enough.
  • Blunt Metaphors Trauma: Since she isn't fully fluent in the Norad language she has trouble following metaphors and puns, usually taking them at face value or not understading them at all.
  • Body Paint: She has distinctive red markings in her body. When asked what they mean even Fuuka can't explain saying everyone in her village had it.
  • Conlang: While her "gauspeak" was just gibberish in the Japanese version, in English, it's a full invented language with its own grammar. There's a fan-made dictionary for it.
  • Crutch Character: Downplayed. In terms of self-healing Fuuka can more or less take care of herself at early game, but soon enough her meals won't keep up with the damage she'll take and you'll have to either give her items or keep your Cure All spell handy. As long as you keep Fuuka properly geared, she will deal a lot of damage.
  • Dark and Troubled Past:
    • She's been through some tough times, with people taking advantage of her kind nature and fooling her, but she takes it in stride. However, during one of her romance events she mentions she never enjoyed work until she arrived in Rigbarth.
    • Her final romance event reveals Simone and Eljse found Fuuka wounded and alone in Gadeus Grasslands, muttering about the "Scary Thing". Fuuka was also expelled from other towns because she used to get scared very easily and would unwittingly lash out at others and part of this event has her training very hard to control this instinctive behavior— something Simone also demanded previously in order to allow her to stay in Rigbarth. And the reason she has been travelling in first place was because she was expelled from her village for releasing the "Scary Thing" due to her Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny! tendencies. She's forced to move all the time since this monster has been hunting her and will threaten everyone where she is if she stays put when a black smog appears for more than three days straight...
  • Does Not Like Spam: She doesn't like vegetables, particularly onions since she detests stinky things.
  • Eloquent in My Native Tongue: In contrast to her difficulty with human language she's proficient in speaking in the Gau language, composed of various "gau"s, and, apparently, Body Language and Signed Language, not that she has animations for the physical parts, as the main character is told it's more important to see than to hear and notes the use of her hands when getting a crash course on the language. The English version of the game has the language being referred to simply as the were-animal language and consists of a unique Conlangnote  rather than the one "word", but is otherwise treated the same as in the Japanese version.
  • Exposed to the Elements: Fuuka mentions she and her race don't really feel much cold. She still doesn't like it, though.
  • Furry Reminder: Played for laughs. Fuuka often does dog-like things like bury stuff (mostly things she doesn't like), sniff people (ones she takes a liking to), fish with her own hands and one of her random conversation has her chasing her own tail, with a bemused Ares/Alice wondering how she doesn't get dizzy.
  • Genki Girl: Fuuka is a cheerful ball full of energy. The fact she works with the perpetually lethargic Elsje out of all people makes the contrast even more glaring.
  • Glass Cannon: Fuuka has strong attacks and uses skills to quickly beat up enemies to a pulp, but her lack of shield combined with a pretty aggressive behavior means she'll get knocked out pretty often if you don't keep an eye on her. Fuuka does eat some meals if her HP gets too low, though.
  • Hates Being Alone: Elsje mentions Fuuka gets very sad if she's stays alone for too long. By the time she is found in her Hide and Seek event (which she proves to be a bit too good at), with everyone participating worried sick about her, she's close to having an anxiety attack.
  • Hyperactive Sprite: Well, model instead of sprite. Fuuka is usually moving her arms back and forth moving a lot more in her "idle" animation when tending to the Lackadaisy counter or during town events.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a piece of hair curling up on top of her head.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: Despite speaking were-animal language, she can be clearly understood by everyone with zero problems. It's Played for Laughs when the protagonist meets her, as Elsje tells them to "just listen to her" and they realize they can understand Fuuka with no problems.
  • Ki Manipulation: Fuuka has a unique attack where she uses a wind-like magic attack with her fists.
  • Language Barrier: Downplayed. She is unable to speak human language proficiently, her few lines and words spoken in it tend to be somewhat off such as her frequent use of "spar-klee". She generally has no problem understanding what is said to her, outside of Heinz's excessive use of puns. This does cause a bit of trouble during Fuuka's confession event. Ares/Alice has no idea how to explain how different "going out" with Fuuka would be, or make her heart feel "thumpy", which Fuuka dislikes since she relates the feeling to when she met the Scary Thing.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Because of her were-animal heritage, she has canine ears and a tail.
  • Living Lie Detector: Her profile mentions her intuition is keen enough she can notice if someone is lying on instinct. Given Fuuka mentions in one of her conversations she used to be tricked a lot, she had to learn when people were trying to fool her.
  • Meaningful Gift: Shinies! Early on she lets you know how much she loves shiny things, so gifting her any gems, or Gold and Platinum, will make her very happy. Emerald is her absolute favorite, though. If you date her one of the nicknames you can ask Fuuka to call you is even "Spar-klee", complete with her calling you so with a soft tone.
  • Morality Pet: Downplayed. Fuuka is this to Elsje, who is as far from being evil as possible, but Priscilla notes that having Fuuka around made Elsje happier about her job and at a bit less lazy about it.
  • Neat Freak: Mostly because she likes how shiny the floor looks after a good cleaning. Elsje also mentions she scrubs dishes a bit too enthusiastically, so she has to buy new ones rather often.
  • The Nose Knows: Fuuka memorizes the scent of people she takes a liking to. Her strong sense of smell also makes her have little tolerance for stinky things like onions and whatever Elsje forgets to dispose of.
  • The Pollyanna: The description and Fuuka herself mentions going through some tough times before her life in Rigbarth, but she'd rather live for today rather than dwell on the past.
  • Power Fist: Her preferred weapon in battle are gloves.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Her hair (fur?) has a bright pink color and she's very receptive and friendly, so much that Martin was unable to refuse mushrooms (which he hates) when offered by her.
  • Simple-Minded Wisdom: What's happiness for her? Eat until your belly is full and sleep until you wake up.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Her name would typically be translated as "Fuka", but it is officially spelled as "Fuqua" for the Japanese version and "Fuuka" for the English version.
  • Stealth Expert: When playing hide and seek with other villagers, she's impossible to find. It's only late into the night when the main character calls out that the game is over that she ever reveals herself (apparently she digs a hole and just hides there). She grew proficient at hiding herself during her time wandering before reaching Rigbarth.
  • Stepford Smiler: Downplayed. Her happiness is genuine and she truly loves her life in Rigbarth, but due to a monster that's been hunting her for a long time she is forced to move from place to place. She never lets anyone, sans people who are very close to her, know about this problem. It all comes to a head when she, at her most desperate, tries to face it alone, thinking she doesn't deserve to be happy and nearly dies fighting it.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She loves fish, and she loves them raw. She is a were-animal, after all. The Golden Salmon and Golden Octopus are some of her loved gifts. Elsje even mentions how convenient this is for her since she doesn't need to cook anything special for Fuuka's birthday.
  • Walking the Earth: She's been traveling through many places in her life until finally settling down in Rigbarth. This wasn't by choice. In her romance event it's revealed she is being hunted by a creature she accidentally unleashed in her village which caused her to be banned from it and she has to run away whenever a black smog would show up where she was and last for three days.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: She doesn't understand dating, kissing, marriage, or seemingly romantic love in general should the protagonist decided to court her. Considering how she does go to the other were-animals, who presumingly speak her native tongue, for help in understanding dating and still walks away confused, her not understanding going out does not appear to be a language issue. The only person who manages to get the right words for Fuuka is Livia, saying this should make "her heart feel all sparkly", and there is little in-game that suggests that Livia speaks were-animal outside of a cut-scene with the first farm dragon that implies that were-animal is the same language that some monsters speak.

    Ludmila

Ludmila

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ludmila_5.png
"Ooh la la, it was so frightening I got chills! I'm all a-quiver."

A succubus who lives for love and is totally head-over-heels for the protagonist. Has great endurance and can put up with a lot of punishment. Enjoys finding herself in risky (and sometimes risqué) situations. Seems to do whatever she pleases but is actually quite serious and abides by her own set of rules. Her succubus nature has caused people to suffer in the past, so she tends to keep her distance from others.

  • The Atoner: It is said that in her past life she has hurt people way before she meets the protagonist. However, Ludmila is shown to be serious and wants to make changes due to the misfortune she has caused others in her past life.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The main reason she stays in Rigbarth is due to its people not having any prejudice against her and treating her with kindness.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: If you date her, she learns she's been entering the other resident's dreams and eating their emotions. She tries to leave Rigbarth for everyone's safety. Ares/Alice tries to go after them, only for her to tell them to stay away and cast a spell to immobilize them and knock them unconscious. This is quite a shock considering her behavior beforehand.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Rainbow Trout recipes are among her loved gifts. They're poisonous food but Ludmila knows it and doesn't care because she enjoys the pain.
  • Black Mage: Going with her witch motif she wields Magic Staves and spells to fight.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Talk to her at night and she mentions she's enjoying the moon and she's not talking about the one hanging in the sky.
  • Combat Stilettos: Her heels do not impair her ability to fight in any way. Possibly justified as for why she wears them in first place - she seems to enjoy pain and fighting in heels could be very painful indeed.
  • Cuddle Bug: She's not shy about hugging the protagonist.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Discussed. Besides the fact she was part of Oswald's band, Ludmila mentions succubi aren't generally well received in most places and that she had to move a lot in her life. Being in Rigbarth where nobody has any prejudice against her (and having Ares/Alice nearby) is the happiest she's ever been. Having happy people around so she can feed on their excess happiness is also a big plus too.
  • Emotion Eater: Succubi like her eat other's emotions, often by entering their dreams. Ludmila, however, doesn't like stealing people's emotions this way, so she instead focuses on making everyone around her as happy as possible so she can eat their excess happiness without harming them. She also doesn't do it for "fun", it's something she needs as much as she needs food and without it it's heavily implied she'd die.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Right after being saved Ludmila is smitten by Ares/Alice and goes off about things she likes without a care in the world which leaves them flabbergasted. Hey, Oswald did warn she was an oddball.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As much of a masochistic as she is, she does not approve of the Ares/Alice doing the same thing. If you talk to her while you have a status condition, she tells you off for walking around like that and asks you to go home and get some rest.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Her pupils are yellow hearts due to her succubus heritage. Said hearts grow even bigger when she gets excited.
  • Flowers of Femininity: She wears two white flowers in her hair, fitting with her girly and love-obsessed personality.
  • For Happiness: She literally eats happiness, so she's very invested in making everyone around her as happy as possible. Thankfully, it doesn't take away from their happiness, but it does "fill her up," as she describes it.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Has Love at First Sight with the player, but needs to have her affection levels raised like anyone else.
  • Genki Girl: There's not a single dull moment when Ludmila is around.
  • Hates Being Alone: Being alone isn't something she hates simply because of her overtly affectionate personality, it's also because this would be lethal to her since she's an Emotion Eater and must have happiness to survive.
  • Informed Species: She's a succubus, but doesn't look the part as she's lacking the features succubus are known to have other than her pointy ears.
  • In Love with Love: While she is enamored by the protagonist, she is also fascinated with love itself, which caused her in her past life to bring harm and misfortune to others prior to meeting the protagonist.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Thanks to the fact that she loves it when the protagonist is happy, she's completely unperturbed if they marry someone else— she gets to eat all their delicious happiness, after all. She still continues being affectionate towards them, but she clearly doesn't mind sharing.
  • Last Girl Wins: Should you choose to court her. Ludmila is the last candidate to move to Rigbarth somewhat late into the game's story.
  • Magic Staff: Fittingly enough for her appearance, she fights with magic.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Not that Ares/Alice needed one in their life in first place, but Ludmila certainly brings even more, er, eventful things to their life in Rigbarth.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: On top of having yellow heart-shaped pupils, she has purple eyes that further show she isn't human.
  • Meaningful Gift: Flowers in general makes her happy, the really rare, tough to grow, ones like Crystal Flowers are her favorites, though. Love related things like rings, Love Scale, Prelude to Love are also obvious choice for the love-obsessed girl.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: While she's proud of her succubus heritage, she acknowledges that her species has not always been kind to others, and chooses to not do some of the more "typical" succubus things like entering people's dreams to eat their emotions without permission.
  • Nice Girl: Behind all that Love Freakiness this is what Ludmila is. Despite her initial appearance she's very caring towards people and will do things like give free flowers, gather trash and help them with potions so they can be happy. And while she enjoys pain, she cannot stand seeing others in pain and freaks out when Ares/Alice trips up and hurt themselves.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Her dress is very poofy with ruffles to match.
  • Pointy Ears: Her ears are pointed, but are much less pronounced than an elf's. She is a succubus after all.
  • Rescue Romance: With a healthy dose of Love at First Sight for Ares/Alice and she's not shy in the least about showing how much she loves them from the get-go.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: Her usual clothes strongly resembles one of a witch.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She's in love with the protagonist, no matter what. Male or female, regardless of how they treat her, and even if they decide to date and marry someone else, she's more than happy to share.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Implied to be one of the reasons why she instantly falls for Ares/Alice. She spent part of her life living rather dangerously, but always wanted to settle in some place where she'd be accepted, and having someone that would love and protect her is the perfect combination for a life full of love she yearns for.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's noticeably taller than Ares/Alice even without wearing heels.
  • Succubi and Incubi: She's the series' first succubus. She's an Emotion Eater who gets sustenance from making everyone around her as happy as possible, though she leans into the more sexual origins of her species by being madly in love with the protagonist and having the most suggestive dialogue. She also implies that succubi in this universe are excellent alchemists who brew many powerful potions—love potions among them, of course.
  • Succubus in Love: She's a succubus and she's in love with the protagonist, but she's not actually an example of this trope due to Rune Factory succubi being Emotion Eaters and not sex-empowered as more traditional succubi are. Though she DOES behave in a very suggestive manner towards Alice/Ares, that seems to be more of a personal trait of hers rather than one of all succubi.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Early interactions with her quickly reveal her to be an extreme masochist. Being trapped alone in a cave overrun by vicious monsters excites her, getting hit in the head with a falling branch is "unbearably painful" but she'd also like one more, and she makes it a point to sing inappropriate songs in public to get scolded by Scarlett and is only upset when Scarlett stops.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Rainbow Sashimi and Salted P. Trout. Both are poisonous food and she knows it— again, she enjoys the pain that comes with eating these dishes.
  • Troll: Enjoys getting scolded by Scarlett and riles her up with her "excessive displays of affection" or by singing inappropriate songs in the open.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Oswald. Ludmila was more than ready to follow him until he told her to stay in Rigbarth and leave her old life behind.

    Beatrice

Beatrice

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beatrice_19.png
"Well, thank you for the courteous introduction."
Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa (JP), Julie Ann Taylor (EN)

A noblewoman on a secret mission. Although sheltered and out of touch with the outside world, she has a strong sense of responsibility. Her many talents include playing instruments and riding monsters. While she originally planned to leave as soon as she finished her business in Rigbarth, she has a change of heart once she gets to know the protagonist and the townsfolk.

  • Arranged Marriage: Her Creepy Uncle tries to have one with her.
  • Bait-and-Switch Sentiment: One of her conversations, once her FP is high enough, has her saying how much she likes Ares/Alice... and all of her subjects. Said line makes their heart even skip a beat.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Her profile states that she is visiting Rigbarth for mission purposes and doesn't intend to settle in town. However, that all changes when she meets the protagonist and is offered hospitality by the other residents.
  • Beneath the Mask: In her events Beatrice worries that her lack of common knowledge is making people see her as weird or worse, as a burden. Ares/Alice reassures her that this is not the case and people of Rigbarth don't dislike her at all.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Don't mistake her polite and gentle nature fool you, she's perfectly capable of fighting beside you and her romance events goes in depth how far she's willing to self-sacrifice in order to aid the people of Norad. Beatrice has some of the harshest dialogues if you trigger her jealousy scenes too.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: She tends to want to put strawberries into dishes that definitely aren't suited for them.
  • Cool Crown: Wears one that strongly resembles a very fancy tiara.
  • Cute Bruiser: Despite her dainty appearance, she's physically-oriented, and in fact uses hammers in battle.
  • Does Not Like Spam: She is not able to handle hot foods as they burn her tongue, since during her princess life prior to arriving in Rigbarth her food would always arrive cold because it needed to be checked for poison.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: She doesn't mind being treated without formalities in the least and clearly relishes when people treat her like someone of common status. While she doesn't shy away from her royal duties, she longs for a "normal" life as well. One of her random conversations has her asking if Ares/Alice would be friends with her if she wasn't of high status and if they (jokingly) says "nope" she stays dispirited even after they clarify they were just kidding.
  • Incest-ant Admirer: One of her love events features her Creepy Uncle, the current ruler of Norad, who wants to marry her. She only considers the offer because of how terrible a ruler her uncle is and she thinks, as queen, she'd be able to improve the lives of her people. Fortunately, as part of the events, she finds a way to dethrone her Evil Uncle instead and avoids the marriage entirely.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Beatrice has blue eyes denoting her gentle nature and innocence towards the life outside the nobility.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: She fights in an expensive outfit embedded with gold.
  • King Incognito: She's the second princess of Norad, but she presents herself to the people of Rigbarth as an ordinary citizen. Reinhard asks Ares/Alice to keep it a secret in her introductionary cutscene. Only a few people even know she's nobility, much less who precisely she is.
  • Lady of War: While all the bachelorettes and Alice are considered action girls to some degree or another, Beatrice really stands out as refined and elegant fighter.
  • Mighty Glacier: Her hammer is slow, but once she learns certain Rune Abilities she'll be able to dish some pretty heavy hits.
  • Missing Mom: Strangely, Beatrice's mother is never mentioned.
  • Nice Girl: Beatrice is a kind girl who's always raring to learn more about the life outside nobility and is always thankful to people if they correct her on something that should be common knowledge.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: In addition to being a strong fighter, she is also the second princess of Norad.
  • Politically-Active Princess: A huge motivator for her is the well-being of her people, who are currently miserable under the rule of her Evil Uncle. As part of her marriage events, she is trying to gather the 5 star shards that would allow her to become the true ruler of Norad and remove her Evil Uncle from the throne. She also negotiates with an assassin sent by said uncle and convinces to him not only let her live, but to turn against the Evil Uncle.
  • Proper Lady: Beatrice has refined manners and polite way of speaking to everyone.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Downplayed. Beatrice had a very wealthy (and sheltered) life due to her royal status, but her life in Rigbarth shows that she's has a very down-to-earth personality and most of her mistakes end up being due to lack of knowledge that's regarded as common sense.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: A member of Norad with her own agenda in Rigbarth and perfectly capable of accompanying you in adventures. She's on Rigbarth in order to obtain something that would allow her to become the ruler of Norad and remove her uncle, the current king, from power since people are suffering under him.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: A refined young lady who grew up in luxury, but is also detached from the outside world. Some of her day-to-day conversations has Beatrice blissfully ignorant of common things which Ares/Alice tend to point out.
    • One of the conversations has her wondering if she should keep walking worried that she'd dirty her shoes, Ares wonders why would that be bad, and so just like that Beatrice stops worrying about it. Another one has her getting a strawberry seed and expecting it to grow without watering or even planting it. And sometimes Ares/Alice notice Beatrice still has bubbles in her hair to which she sheepishly admits that she isn't used to bathing without aid of her attendants.
    • Her events has her completely unaware of simple things like hot food since all she ate was lukewarm meals (due to it having to be tested for poison beforehand) and a severe lack of knowledge about regular furnitures (since near everything in the palace she lived was regarded as a national treasure).
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Can fight beside you and her weapons are hammers which are slow, but very powerful.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Beatrice was pampered quite a bit during her childhood, but is nonetheless a kind soul.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: One of her events has her visiting Studio Palmo and doing small changes to things there much to Ryker's exasperation who's practically begging her to stop and Palmo himself is shocked speechless... with how inspiring Beatrice's way of thinking and ends up asking more of her opinion once he "recovers", leaving Ryker bewildered.
  • Sweet Baker: One of her events has her appreciating Rigbarth's bakery and wishing to create a treat of her own. She asks for Randolph to teach her and manages to create something delicious to be considered a local cuisine which she shares with everyone in town and names it "Bea-treats".
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Shows concern for her assassin. The assassin is surprised and questions why she would even show concern for him. Beatrice points tells him criminal or not, he's still one of her subjects and asks for her name. The assassin says he has no name, and assassinating has been his whole life. Beatrice decides to give him the name of Dela. This works in her and Reinhard's favor as Dela testifies against Beatrice's uncle and exposes his plan to usurp the throne.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Fruit, specifically strawberries, Strawberry Jam and Strawberry Milk are among her favorite gifts. She also wonders if they'll taste great with stew, but Ares/Alice greatly disagree.
  • What's Up, King Dude?: She's royalty, a Princess, but is staying in Rigbarth as a commoner, at Reinhard's request, and isn't bothered by being treated without any of the formality.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Beatrice is very gentle, unfailingly polite, caring, but very far from being a pushover or defenseless.

Bachelors

    Martin

Martin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_martin.png
"Please don't talk to me right now."
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama (JP), Griffin Puatu (EN)

An apprentice striving to become the greatest blacksmith the world's ever known. Not fond of talking to others and easily misunderstood due to his blunt nature. Takes immense pride in his work (it's rumored that he secretly names his tools) and usually only has smithing on his mind, but his world starts to change once he meets the protagonist.

  • Aloof Big Brother: He comes off as this to Cecil, but they still care about each other.
  • The Blacksmith: For the town of Rigbarth.
  • Blaming the Victim: Ironically for something where he is the victim. If he's your lover and you confess your love to somebody else, he apologizes to Ares/Alice for not being good enough.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Martin believes his parents are gone for good, thus the responsibility of raising Cecil falls on him.
  • Cool Helmet: Dons a seriously cool looking one. You wouldn't be at fault for thinking he's a town guard at first glance.
  • Does Not Like Spam: One of Cecil's random dialogue mentions he cooked dinner for Martin and accidentally put mushrooms in the meal and tried to convince him it wasn't on purpose. One of Martin's dialogue also mentions he was given a mushroom by Fuuka since the Lackadaisy restaurant had extras and Martin couldn't turn down Fuuka's smile. Ironically enough Mushrooms grow near where he works.
  • Forgets to Eat: He's so focused on his work that he forgets to take care of himself. Most notably, he will work on days on end without rest. See also Workaholic below.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Martin supposedly works too much to the point of neglecting his sleep if not his overall health, but wakes up and goes to bed at the same time as everyone else.
  • Hidden Depths: Given Martin's aloof personality, one wouldn't think he enjoys giving names to the tools he crafts.
  • Meaningful Gift: Ores are an obvious choice, but top-grade ones, like Orichalcum and Dragonic Stone, are among his favorite gifts.
  • Mighty Glacier: Hammers aren't exactly fast weapons, but Martin eventually learns Rune Abilities that make him hit really freaking hard.
  • No Social Skills: One of his events mentions he tried to run the selling part of the blacksmith. People mentioned he either came of as cold and impatient or had a very unnerving "smile" when greeting them. Part of that event is helping him deal with this issue.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Priscilla notes that despite their opposite work ethics, Martin and Elsje have one thing in common: they're not home very often. Of course Priscilla also notes that Martin is working hard while Elsje is just lazy.
  • The Stoic: He's rather anti-social compared to the rest of the bachelors and doesn't appear to be very expressive with his emotions either.
  • Terse Talker: He usually keeps dialogue short and straight to the point.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Fruit. note
  • When He Smiles: Martin has a very kind smile, but something only the weapons he forges, or people he's comfortable with see. Martin himself says he cannot do this normally, otherwise he wouldn't need to ask for help when dealing with clients.
  • Workaholic: Martin works constantly and practically lives at his place of work. Cecil mentions in an event that he worries about Martin when he doesn't come home, which is a common occurrence. In another event, Darroch, his boss and teacher, fusses over Martin, saying that constant work that Martin does isn't healthy.

    Reinhard

Reinhard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_reinhard.png
"A knight of my stature cannot abide a loss."
Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae (JP), Chris Hackney (EN)

A talented knight who pledged an oath of fealty to the Kingdom of Norad and has a long history in politics. The reason behind his visit to Rigbarth remains unknown. Possesses a strong sense of duty and a fierce intellect, but since he never tries to force his morals on others, he's earned a reputation as a trustworthy person. However, he starts to share a whole different side of himself with the protagonist.

  • The Ace: He's a highly capable knight who is well-liked and trusted by the citizens of Rigbarth. Additionally, he is very intelligent, skilled with politics, and has a natural gift for communication. He is also implied to be something of a Chick Magnet as well.
  • Affluent Ascetic: Although he's a knight of renown, Reinhard has a rather frugal life style and is always afraid of throwing away old stuff thinking he may find a use for them. It's justified since he was very poor before becoming a knight.
  • Battle Cry: "Leave it to me!" "There won't be a 'next time'!"
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Nice Guy he is it's easy to forget he's a knight first and citizen of Rigbarth second. Do anything that even remotely threatens Beatrice's honor, or worse, Beatrice herself and you'll have to contend with one of Norad's finest knight.
  • BFS: Due to his job, his preferred weapon are claymores.
  • Big Eater: According to his Destined Person Diagnosis quiz results, he likes anything he can eat, so it is highly encouraged to gift him with big, hearty meals.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: He has an extremely poor sense of taste, which makes it hard for him to give his opinion on dishes. He has a particular liking for failed dishes, which are known to taste bad.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: According to his Diagnosis Fate results, a lot of young women are vying for his attention to win his heart. Reinhard himself is clueless to this fact despite women giving him letters and bringing him drinks during his training sessions.
  • Collector of the Strange: Ares/Alice take note that he's always picking up old, worn-out, boots. Reinhard justifies it by saying he can fix them.
  • The Comically Serious: Whenever he does something he does it like it's Serious Business. In Fuuka's Hide and Seek event he was prepared to camp out for three days and is only got caught in his home because he was taking precautions for Beatrice, such as preparing her food to last for that long.
  • Dark Secret: Played for Laughs. When exposed to Lucy's cursed mirror he admits that the dishes he makes for Beatrice are not made with the finest ingredients, but rather the most frugal purchases he can manage. She already knew and enjoys his cooking regardless.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Unlike most characters, who give the player return gifts for every 3-4 homemade gifts they're given, Reinhard very rarely gives the player gifts. This is because he grew up poor and has a very frugal mindset, and even now is loath to give away anything he can make use of.
  • House Husband: He's a platonic example to Beatrice, and a proper romantic example should the player marry him. He happily takes care of all of Beatrice's chores, from the laundry to the groceries to the cooking, and should Alice/Ares romance him, he'll mention doing plenty of chores as well, taking care of the domestic side of things.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: He is known to be a well-respected, highly reliable knight among the townsfolk of Rigbarth.
  • Lethal Chef: Downplayed. He's quite capable of cooking crowd-pleasing food, but his poor sense of taste means that some of his dishes, while perfectly edible by his standards, are disgusting to anyone else. Failed Dishes are even one of the lunches he gives the protagonist if married.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Has great STR and VIT growths, hits pretty hard with his Rune Abilities (once leveled enough) and is pretty light on his feet. Don't let magic hit him, though.
  • Meaningful Gift: Being a practical, hands-on, hard working person he likes things like Gold-Platinum grade Farm Tools and seeds. Don't forget he's also a knight, so items that enhance his battle skills like Formuade and Invinciroid are also good choices. Conversely he has a strong dislike for gems feeling they're superfluous and saying he doesn't understand why people value them so much.
  • Nice Guy: Reinhard is a genuinely kind person and helps anyone and everyone he possibly can. In Scarlett's events where he is paired with Terry to patrol Rigbarth he humbly offers to let Terry deal with a monster that's been spotted nearby so Terry can have the glory, Terry (claiming to be the brain not the brawn), however, isn't too keen on accepting the offer.
  • Only One Who Likes Spam: He genuinely likes Failed and Disastrous Dishes, which are otherwise so vile that they put the "lethal" in Lethal Chef and can be actively weaponized by the player.
  • Rags to Riches: He was born into a destitute family and only got out of poverty by being knighted by the king and being granted patronage.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He's a strong, tough knight, the second-most-muscular character after Darroch, and he happily busies himself with domestic chores like laundry and cooking.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Being a polite, diligent knight with a (somewhat) bad cooking ability? It's easy to compare him with Forte.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Sandwiches, Toast and Jam Rolls. All of them are convenient and easy to eat while keeping one hand free. He's also the only character that appreciates Failed and Disastrous Dishes.

    Cecil

Cecil

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cecil_54.png
"I wanna become a detective and... and find our parents!"
Voiced by: Ayumu Murase (JP), Zeno Robinson (EN)

Martin's naïve younger brother who idolizes detectives and is trying to become one himself in order to track down their missing parents. He and Martin don't talk much these days, but even though they're a little distant, Cecil still loves him with all his heart. His insatiable curiosity helps him make friends with the protagonist.

  • Badass Adorable: He is Martin's innocent younger brother, but the protagonist is able to take him into dangerous dungeons just like the rest of the bachelors and bachelorettes.
  • Beneath the Mask: Cecil keeps cheerful disposition towards life and his job as apprentice detective. It's a good way to mask his insecurities and how much he misses his family.
  • Clueless Detective: He's training under Terry to become a detective like him, but has some ridiculous beliefs about the cause of some small problems. He's first introduced excited that Yuki lost her glasses and suspects a ghost, turns out the glasses were on her head. One of his random dialogue also mention he was assigned by Terry to figure out which Rigbarth citizen has their birthday on the 12th. Turns out its his birthday and is embarrassed about forgetting it.
  • Cute Bookworm: He loves good books, and will ask the player about the things they enjoy reading. And he's an adorable young Keet to go with it.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Milk. In-universe, he does try to overcome it.
  • Healing Hands: Capable of using the Medi class spells and CureAll.
  • I Want to Be a Real Man: Cecil has a bit of a complex over being treated as though he's just a kid, "half a man" in the Japanese version, even if said treatment is all in his head. This notably comes up when he's not asked to help get a massive log off of Palmo due to there being both people physically stronger than him present and a need for someone quick to be able to get more help if necessary, which he could've easily handled.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: He's the only bachelor with blue eyes and appears to be the youngest of the group.
  • Innocently Insensitive: While Cecil is well-intentioned and easy to get along with, he is often unaware that his "detective skills" causes misunderstandings in minor situations, and drawing more attention to it than necessary.
  • Keet: He is quite friendly and cheerful, contrasting to his older brother Martin's more stoic and taciturn personality.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Cecil is obsessed with mysteries, something that Terry notes, and goes out of his way to make everything look like one. In a way he's almost as much of a workaholic as his brother, Martin.
  • Squishy Wizard: Cecil wields a staff and prefers to use magic in battle. His defense is pretty low, so keep him away from enemies.
  • Making a Splash: He uses water-related spell magic in battle and has an additional 25% resistance to water.
  • Morality Pet: If Cecil is your chosen lover, he befriends a visitor who was friends with his parents. The other residents find him suspicious. Spending time with Cecil caused shreds of his conscience to confess that he lied about knowing Cecil's parents and was planning to rob Rigbarth of a few treasures. The visitor then heads to the silo to turn himself in.
  • Nice Guy: Cecil is sincere, kind and good-natured, and always tries to do things to help people of Rigbarth as an apprentice detective.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents are explorers and have been away and busy with big discories ever since he was little. Cecil tries to shrug it off, but seeing Hina with Misasagi and Julian with Lucy and Simone clearly makes him miss them, especially since Martin is so quiet and aloof.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Many fans have compared him to Illuminata from Rune Factory 4. His kind personality and fondess of reading isn't unlike Kiel either.
  • Token Mini-Moe: He's the youngest and smallest of the bachelors. But like Kiel this is deconstructed since he's not happy about it.

    Murakumo

Murakumo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/murakumo.png
"Have yourself a soak in the bath!"
Voiced by: Shunsuke Takeuchi (JP), Kaiji Tang (EN)

A very jovial, somewhat careless, and self-sacrificing were-animal who runs Rigbarth's only inn. Cares deeply about others, and so tends to go overboard giving customers freebies due to his overwhelming desire to make them happy. Unfortunately, this means he often fails to make a profit. After meeting the protagonist, he learns to consider things from his patrons' point of view and starts thinking about how to improve his inn.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Misasagi and Hina shortens his name to "Kumo".
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Misasagi sees him like this, calling him clumsy and stubborn. Albeit the clumsy part is true given the accidental damage he causes with his overwhelming strength.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Murakumo is a very kind and approachable guy, but don't mess with people he cares about. One of his events has some guy trying to scam SEED putting the blame on Ares/Alice and when he makes the guy trip up on his own lie he chases him with full intention to deliver some beating until Scarlett and Livia intervenes (after watching a pissed Murakumo chase after him for a while anyway).
  • Celebratory Body Tossing: In his birthday Hina mentions he did this to her because of how happy he was. Apparently it was a bit too high because Misasagi was not amused by this.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Downplayed; while he's accidentally destroyed parts of the town in the past due to underestimating his stength, he does have some awareness of how strong he is and worries about handling anything delicate.
  • Fatal Flaw: His stubborness and considering asking for help to be a sign of weakness. This causes a lot of grief to him. He gets better about it.
  • Freudian Excuse: If he's the lover you date, you learn the reason for his freebies and prioritizing customer satisfaction over profit along with running the place single handedly, (barring Hina's occasional volunteering) is he ran a previous inn handed down to him by his father and one day, a drunk customer harassed an employee. The employee handled it well, but he wasn't having any of it and in his words, "took a swing at the guy". Word got out about the incident ruining the reputation of both him and the inn, resulting in people not visiting and rendering his employees jobless. He then found Rigbarth where nobody knew him allowing him to start over and decided to work alone so no employee would lose their job again because of him.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: He's known for being exceedingly generous, to the point of getting himself into financial trouble. Every single time the player gives him homemade food, he'll give them a present in return—in contrast to most characters, who only give a return present every 3-4 gifts or so.
  • Genius Bruiser: He does make bad business decisions as detailed in the Money Dumb entry, but Murakumo's events shows he has a very sharp brain to go along with all that muscle.
  • Gentle Giant: He's the tallest and most muscular of the game's male love interests, but he's also a friendly Nice Guy who cares deeply about his friends, his family and the customers at his inn.
  • Hypocrite: A sympathetic example. While he's willing to help others, he refuses to accept help himself unless you activate his romance events.
  • Little Bit Beastly: He is a were-animal that resembles some sort of kitsune.
  • Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: Downplayed to an extent, as he merely destroyed parts of the town some time in the past. Palmo has apparently had to rebuild the Blue Moon on at least one occasion, its current form being designed to be Murakumo proof, and checking the statues in the bath reveal that Misasagi has had to replace them twice. Livia notes that the Silo could easily withstand a monster attack, not that it has ever happened, just because it has withstood Murakumo running into it before.
  • Money Dumb: Murakumo has an unfortunate habit of providing free services at his inn far more than is financially sustainable in attempts to promote it, he's has been noted to have been bailed out by others in the town when taking it too far in the past. If he's romanced, his love events focus on him learning to take a better approach to running the inn by balancing out freebies and paid services.
  • Nice Guy: Rough appearance and speech pattern aside, Murakumo is really friendly and approachable to everyone he meets and has a welcoming presence.
  • Person as Verb: Adjective actually. "Murakumo-proof" means something so sturdy it wouldn't break even if Murakumo accidentally bumped into it.
  • Real Men Hate Sugar: He doesn't like sweets.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Murakumo is noted to have incredible judgment, outside of his own finances, and is relied upon for various matters because of it. One series of events for him covers a few such cases.
    • In one event he's asked to be a judge for a game of Shiritori, and depending on the version either rules that Ryker did not disqualify himself for ending on an N that one time due to Beatrice being able to respond with an incredibly obscure wordnote  that only sees use in Norad's royal courts in the Japanese version or that the game merely continues despite Ryker not knowing an X word and Beatrice taking his turn to say Xiaopai in the English version, while also letting Lucy and Ryker know that her chosen word does actually exist.
    • In the next Julian and Hina are fighting over who gets to keep an abandoned doll they found, he suggests they play a game of tug of war using the doll reasoning that one of them would be smart enough to let it go. When neither does, and the doll is ripped apart, he makes it up to them by buying each of them a doll as it was only destroyed due to his mistake.
    • Finally the protagonist finds a small box containing six valuable jewels and brings it to Livia for safekeeping, who coincidentally is dealing with a man who has lost a box of jewels. Seeing only six jewels in the box, he accuses the protagonist of having stolen the seventh jewel it supposedly had and demands the price be paid in full. Murakumo hears this and comes to be a neutral judge in the conflict, and makes the simple suggestion that SEED hold on to the box and jewels until the man can prove that the items are his as a box with six jewels is not a box with seven jewels and may be someone else's, then Scarlett informs the man that per SEED policy he has six months to prove ownership or they transfers ownership to the item's finder. The prospect of losing all of his jewels gets the man to admit to attempting to scam them out of some money for the nonexistant seventh jewel.

    Lucas

Lucas

"In that case, just who am I?"
Voiced by: Showtaro Morikubo (JP), Mark Whitten (EN)

An amnesiac gentleman who wandered into town one day. Just about everything piques his interest, and he constantly takes notes on whatever catches his attention. Despite having lost his memories, he's impressively well-versed on many subjects, and can judge the worth of any gemstone without fail.

  • Ambiguously Human: Due to the nature of his powers, it's unclear if he's human or something else entirely. The fact that he's lost his memories further muddies the issue, and he believes he may be some kind of deity.
  • Amnesiac God: He starts off with no memory of who he is or where he came from, but he soon starts manifesting unusual powers. However, he comes to the conclusion that he's a god fairly quickly after that.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Twice in the story he is asked by Ares/Alice to do something deemed "impossible" and "miraculous" and twice he does it. His "last" miracle has him opening a gate to Audea so people of Rigbarth can send their prayers once he senses Ares/Alice is in grave danger.
  • Constantly Curious: Despite having no memory of who he is, Lucas is often curious about the world around him and enjoys researching and expanding his knowledge.
  • Deus ex Machina: In more ways than one, but mainly during the ending where, despite not being omnipotent, he somehow detects that the protagonist has been possessed by the Fathomless Dread in another dimension early enough for him to alert and gather the whole town to the main character's peril. Him opening a portal was an established power of his by that point, but him also being able to deliver prayers to an Earthmate through the portal was also a new thing from him.
  • Divine Date: He's one of the romanceable characters, and a god.
  • Elemental Powers: In battle he can use a variety of different elemental magic.
  • Forgets to Eat: During his introduction, the main character learns that he hasn't eaten for at least 2 days since he lost his memory. Lucus overall seems out-of-touch with his mortal body and often gets lost in thought or his discoveries, similarly to the Absent-Minded Professor trope. To add to this, his house is the only one without a kitchen, so it's unlikely that he makes his own food at home.
  • Forgot I Could Change the Rules: When the protagonist asks him for help in teleporting to the final boss's lair, he's hesitant at first, because the gods aren't supposed to interfere in the lives of mortals and the world being destroyed may be its intended fate. When the protagonist asks him who made that rule, he sheepishly admits it was him and decides to change it.
  • Friend to All Children: Hina and Julian are two of his closest friends in town, as they love his magic tricks. They treat him as a sort of Cool Uncle, and he's very fond of them in kind. In one of his events one of his tricks, at Julian's suggestion, spooks and lightly injures Yuki, and when Ares/Alice tries to vouch for him saying, in the spur of the moment, it was Julian's idea, Lucas prevents them from talking so Julian won't get blamed for it.
  • God Is Good: For someone who heavily considers the possibility that he's a god, he spends more time entertaining the citizens of Rigbarth with his divine miracles and is happy to see Julian and Hina like his shows. He also stops a con man from ripping off Palmo with a fake ruby and uses his powers to drop a rock on the same guy for selling a fake gem to Randolph. He then helps Ares/Alice save Rigbarth, possibly the world, using his powers and bending his own rules for that since the mere thought of the people of Rigbarth suffering brings immense sorrow to him.
  • Insistent Terminology: His powers are not magic, they're miracles.
  • MacGuffin Super-Person: Downplayed. He is sought out to teleport characters and even open gates (portals) between two otherwise separate locations, but lives in town and is relatively easy to find. Taking him to various places to help him regain his memory is essential to advance the plot, however.
  • Made of Iron: He gets put through things that probably would give Ludmila pause. Between them is getting hit hard enough by a Kraken to lose his memories, which Ares/Alice even muses as how lucky he is to have lost his memories instead of his life, and later purposefully getting hit by a huge lightning bolt in an attempt to shock his memories back to his head. "Gods are made of sterner stuff." is even one of his lines when in your party.
  • Manchild: Despite his gentlemanly demeanor and the fact that he's the oldest bachelor in both appearance and actuality, his personality is actually very childlike: He's Constantly Curious, he's ignorant about the way lots of things in the world work, and his best friends in town are children.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: Discussed at a few points if the player chooses to romance him:
    • In his pre-marriage event, he's in danger of losing his mortal body due to an excess of negative runes. He notes that if his body does die, he will re-form a new one eventually. When the protagonist asks him how long that takes, however, his silence makes them painfully aware of the fact that they'll be long dead by the time he's able to reincarnate.
    • In his marriage cutscene, he refuses the "until death do you part" part of the vows, as he notes that as an immortal, he will continue to love Alice/Ares forever. His phrasing is rather open-ended, and implies that the protagonist will remain with him forever—though how, be it through an Immortality Inducer, a Reincarnation Romance, or otherwise—is left unexplored. Some of his post-marriage dialogues continue to reference him and the PC loving each other "for eternity," however.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Following his events reveals that Lucas can also read minds by touching others with his barehands and that his voice has the frightening capacity of sending people's souls to heaven unless he tones it down.
  • Odd Friendship: With Heinz. A gentlemanly amnesiac god and Rigbarth's crystal shop owner and local jokester. During the slumber party event Lucas even mentions how grateful he is for Heinz's generosity and how he admires him.
  • Our Gods Are Different: He's not omnipotent (in fact, he's amnesiac), and his powers are mostly limited to teleporting things, but he's a god nonetheless.
  • Physical God: His memory loss makes him consider the possibility that he's a god, but is flesh and blood just like the other residents of Rigbarth.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As far as gods go Lucas is more than willing to shoulder any problems his powers may end up inadvertently cause. He also listen to Ares/Alice and more than once grant them help once he realizes in how much danger Rigbarth and the entire world could be.
  • Significant Birth Date: His birthday is Spring 1, to signify that, as a god, he's the same age as the world. Alternatively, it may reflect how this is his birthday even when he has lost most of his memory. He doesn't remember his real birthday (or, as a god, maybe he was born before time began), so he picked the first day of the year to act as his birthday.
  • Teleportation: His most unusual power is teleporting things from somewhere to anywhere without using normal magic (as far as most people in Rigbarth are concerned). This can be done directly or through portals which he opens to two seemingly impossible to access locations.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He really loves udon, which he'll tell you if you give him a "neutral" gift.
  • Will Not Tell a Lie: He doesn't see the point in lying. When confronted by the protagonist about it, he asks afterwards if they think he should be lying more.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Once you have a good relationship with him he mentions he feels a "jolt of pain coursing through his chest" whenever he sees Ares/Alice talking to someone else.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Gideon's flying castle is utterly unreachable. Dragons would be seen, attacked, and killed attempting to approach it and any attempts to magically reach it would be detected, allowing retaliation that way as well. Lucas is able to set up a Gate between Rigbarth and the solid clouds surrounding the castle undetected because it is not "magic" he's using it's "a divine miracle".

    Ryker

Ryker (JP: Ryuka)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryker_6.png
"I'll get straight to it tomorrow. Today, I rest."
Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (JP), Alejandro Saab (EN)

A sleepy apprentice carpenter who owes a great debt to his mentor. His hands are as quick as his wits, but his lack of work ethic means he doesn't get along with the diligent Martin. Often lectured by those older than him and treated as a peer by those younger than him. Although he's constantly dozing off during the day, at night a cooler, more mysterious side of him emerges.

  • Animal Motifs: Butterflies.
  • Casting a Shadow: In addition to Dual Wielding, Ryker use dark magic skills with his dual blades.
  • Chuunibyou: Several of Ryker's behaviors, speech patterns, and dialogue are peppered with this, such as his night-time pose, obsession with darkness, and how his "hidden powers" are awakened at night. Additionally, he can use dark magic in combat, which is used to further emphasize these these traits.
  • Competition Freak: Not on the same level of Lucy, but Ryker is always trying to show off and saying how he can win without trying.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: During Martin's romance events, he snidely taunts Martin for moping around while Darroch injured his arm and thus can't fulfill a customer's order. Despite upsetting Martin, Julian, and Ares/Alice and making Hina cry (which further aggravates Julian), doing so snaps Martin back to his senses and motivates him to mine ore and handle the order for Darroch.
  • Disappeared Dad:
    • In one of his character events, he tells Ares/Alice that before Palmo took him in, his father left his family behind, and the fallout was bad enough that Ryker lived with his siblings for a while before circumstances forced him to leave.
    • Later on he admits he wasn't telling the whole truth and decides to trust Ares/Alice with the full details. He reveals his family comes from a line of honorable thieves starting with King Basara reclaiming other people's stolen goods, but with laws enacted, thieves were disapproved by society even if they were honorable. The public news is that he was caught, but Ryker believes he turned himself in. His brother became the next Basara, but wasn't cut out for it and now steps into the role himself stealing from lowlifes.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Curry.
  • Dual Wielding: His starting weapon of choice is a pair of dual blades.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: He wears two straps on left side of his pants.
  • Foreshadowing: Priscilla's request to enter the Lackadaisy restaurant after Elsje hasn't come out in days is solved by Ryker picking the lock.
  • Friend to All Children: He gets along well with Hina and Julian due to his carefree and somewhat immature personality.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation:
    • Ryker's starting level is 1, yet ironically his hiding base is Basara's Hideout, one of the higher level dungeons locked behind in the second arc.
    • He's more active during the night and following him to learn the secret of Basara's Hideout is a plot point, but wakes up and goes to bed at the same time as the other residents.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his rather immature exterior and laziness Ryker is very serious about his carpenter job and the times Martin does get under his skin is when he doubts Ryker's abilities in said job. He's also surprisingly down to earth when the situation calls for it.
  • Hobbits: He's the Rune Factory series first halfling. He's not particularly short (then again, neither are Rune Factory's dwarves), but Word of God is that his day/night dichotomy is related to his halfling nature.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: His original Japanese name (リュカ / Ryuka) can be translated as Lyka, Luka, Ryuka, or even Lucas. The English translation interprets his name as Ryker, to avoid making it too similar to or the same as Lucas, another character whose Japanese name (ルーカス / Luukasu) has fewer localization options than リュカ / Ryuka.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: The more you learn of his past the more his dialogues come off as this.
  • Insecure Love Interest: One of his lover's dialogues has him asking Alice/Ares if they see him as a nuisance.
Ryker: Isn't it annoying to be loved by someone like me?
  • Jerkass Has a Point: The scene of Priscilla trying to enter the Lackadaisy restaurant without the key since Elsje has it and hasn't been seen for days, has Martin and Darroach trying to bust it down with their hammers. As condescending as it was for him to call blacksmiths all brawn and no brain, he's right that its needless reckless as it would've just caused unnecessary damage.
  • Not a Morning Person: He's pretty absent-minded and lethargic during the daytime. He's much more active at night though.
  • Precision F-Strike: For a game that has very little strong words his "[what] The hell!?" when he gets hurt in combat stands out.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: If you decide to date him, it reveals that he wasn't completely honest about his dad abandoning him. He comes from a lineage of thieves to return ill gotten items to their owners. In those days, the world was a lawless place, but as actual laws were put into place, honorable thieves were still considered thieves, so his dad turned himself in. He then picks up his family legacy to steal a crown from a dishonest family of merchants. He makes a deal with Ares/Alice that if they can touch him, they can turn him over to SEED. He successfully escapes, but takes the blow from the Green Kaiser. Ares/Alice check up on him and take him to the clinic. After some treatment from Simone, Ryker sneaks out of the clinic to let Livia and Scarlett arrest him. Livia is willing to look the other way while Scarlett has to use some loopholes saying that while Ryker did steal, the people he stole from didn't obtain the item legally.
  • Taking the Bullet: In his marriage event, he takes a hit from one of the monsters in Basara's Hideout that was about to attack Alice/Ares while she wasn't paying attention and immediately passes out. This prompts him to realize that Alice/Ares is more important to him his family traditions and says he only noticed it once he saw them in danger.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He loves all kinds of potato-based dishes, but especially croquettes. He also responds just as positively when being gifted with ice cream.
  • Tsundere: A rather mild version. While it's not particularly noticeable at first, some of his conversational dialogue can develop into this. This becomes more evident during particular cutscenes and date events.

Villagers

    Livia

Field Captain Livia (JP: Rivia)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/list_sub_img_rivia_0.png
"How's our little town today?"
SPOILER

The field captain of Rigbarth Outpost. Looks young but acts much older, which gives her an air of mystery. Although she often takes a stern tone with others, she cares about everyone and never hesitates to offer a helping hand to those in need.

  • Aloof Leader, Affable Subordinate: Inverted with Livia and Scarlett. Livia, although serious, is still pretty chill in her commanding position of Field Captain of Rigbarth's SEED always keeping the bigger picture in mind. Scarlett on the other hand is much more rigid and strict and questions some of Livia's decisions during the story, though it never gets to the point of insubordination.
  • Back from the Dead: She was sealed away for so long that she was reduced to bones. She is revived by unsealing her— which Ares/Alice did as a child mostly by accident no less.
  • Beleaguered Bureaucrat: Livia gets exasperated at the amount of paperwork and small requests she gets from Rigbarth's populace despite everyone knowing how understaffed SEED is.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: One question from Margaret asks if Ares/Alice is afraid of something and one of their responses can be the ire of their dear Field Captain.
  • Big Little Sister: She looks younger than her little sister, Radea.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Feeling her sister is in danger and at literal burst point in Everlasting Darkness is what forces Livia to transform back into her dragon form so she can reabsorb the excess runes in Radea saving her and Ares/Alice lives in the process.
  • Bookworm: Constantly reading something in her free time or otherwise. Given that she never really leaves the Silo there isn't much else she can do.
  • The Captain: Rigbarth's SEED Field Captain. Her jobs as Field Captain are: delegating duties to SEED rangers, passing on Wanted Monster jobs and taking care of (a lot of) paperwork. Livia also mentions meetings with other Field Captains, but nothing else.
  • Custom Uniform: Due to her diminutive size Livia's uniform is a bit different from other SEED members. Her armband has to be pinned since her arms are smaller and her satchel almost resembles a backpack.
  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: Has her eyes more or less half-open, but not on the same level as Elsje. Besides Livia is not lazy, but has a mischievous side to her.
  • The Gadfly: She can be quite mischievous and enjoys messing with the more serious people so they lighten up even if only a bit.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Transforming in her dragon form is something she does only as absolute last resort since it's very exhausting for her.
  • Hidden Depths: During Fuuka's confession event it is Livia who gives the right words so Fuuka can understand and accept Ares/Alice feelings. Considering you never hear Livia talking about love, this is surprising.
  • Knowledge Broker: Being a Field Captain she's always up to date in terms of information regarding what's been happening on Rigbarth and its surroundings.
  • Meaningful Name: As with all major dragons her true name, Lumenivia, relates to her being the Light Dragon.
  • Messy Hair: Her hair naturally has an unkempt air about it and it's uncertain if this is just how her hair is or because of her dragon form.
  • Never Bareheaded: She's always wearing her SEED cap even when she goes to sleep. Even if you gift her a headwear she won't take her cap off.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Give her favorite gift, Pumpkin Flan (of the Stars), and watch her reaction. It's as far as it can get from her normally professional, composed and serious Field Captain self.
    • Her draconic pride rarely shows up but it's still there, such as when she's becomes smug about creating a Rune Stone to counter the rune instability that's plaguing Rigbarth.
  • Older Than She Looks: While she looks no older than Hina, she may occasionally be found talking with Yuki about the past including some of the older characters' childhoods. In a random conversation Livia makes clear she's self-conscious of her appearance, but due to her way of speaking (or "old spirit" as Ares puts it) nobody has ever treated her like a child. Livia is also bothered by the fact she cannot go to places like bars since her youthful appearance would make things very awkward for her and everyone there.
  • Overworked Sleep: Sometimes she mentions spending the whole night busy with paperwork and sleeping on her desk. She doesn't recommend it, though, not unless you want to wake up with ink stains on your face.
  • Properly Paranoid: Twice in the story: Livia always suspected Gideon was up to no good and avoiding meeting him turned out to be a very wise decision since if he had learned of Livia's true form things could get a lot worse for everyone. Additionally she faked the soulsphere registrations for her and Ares/Alice, since the unusual readings from the soulsphere would draw Gideon to them like a moth to a flame, and this proved to be even life-saving as Gideon sapped the Rune energy from Rigbarth using Radea and the soulsphere data. Only Ares/Alice and Livia were unaffected by its loss.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Being a dragon makes all but impossible to really tell how old she is. The fact she's been Back from the Dead at least once only complicate things further.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Livia is much more mellow than her subordinate Scarlett. If she has a good reason to trust or ask for help from anyone outside of SEED she will, and Livia is willing to slightly bend the rules if she feels everyone will benefit from the situation. Of note, she wasn't in the outpost when Gideon paid a surprise visit to escort the arrested Oswald.
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech: Livia delivers one to Gideon at end of the game.
  • Self-Imposed Exile: Livia has her reasons for this. But while you never see her leaving the SEED office, she mentions about going on night shift patrols. Livia isn't perfectly fine with this situation as in one of her random conversations she muses at everything she wanted to do to relax in Rigbarth but can't. Later in the story she explains that staying in dragon form exhausts her and her human form is so weak that even Julian could overpower her, making going outside too dangerous for her.
  • Supporting Leader: Livia will never accept being invited into your party, but her job as Field Captain allows her to gather information from the region surrounding Rigbarth better than anyone else.
  • Sweet Tooth: She happily accepts any sweet food you give her. She even mumbles about chocolate in her sleep.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Pumpkin Flan is Livia's absolute favorite sweet.
  • Vacuum Mouth: As a dragon, she vacuums excess runes from her sister, who gets those runes by absorbing them from the environment and living things.
  • Verbal Tic: "Nyah..." Mostly said when she's pensive.
  • Voluntary Shape Shifting: She is actually a dragon that can take on human form, but her dragon-form drains her strength over time.
  • Walking Spoiler: From the first cutscene it's very clear Livia is more than meets the eye. Talking about her past in any form spoils a lot for Chapter 2 onward.
  • Weak Boss, Strong Underlings: Played With. Livia is aware that her human form has no strength at all; she mentions that even Julian is stronger than her. Nonetheless, she can transform into her dragon form which it's implied to be much more powerful than Radea's despite quickly draining her stamina. She leaves most of the fieldwork to Ares/Alice, Scarlett, and the other rangers and only jumps into action when there's absolutely no other option.

    Simone

Simone

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/list_sub_img_simonepng.png
"Feeling well?"
Voiced by: Marika Kouno (JP), Veronica Taylor (EN)

Rigbarth's doctor and mayor, whom the townsfolk trust with their very lives. Puts her patients first and would never abandon someone in need of treatment. However, she tends to test her new medicines on people with unsettling casualness.

  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: As noted below, she doesn't look much older than Lucy. Also becomes Absurdly Youthful Grandmother if you marry Lucy.
  • Anti-Gravity Clothing: Has a floating green armband (red in the official art) not unlike the butlers from Rune Factory 4.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Apples and tomatoes. The apples are explained if Scarlett is your lover. Simone's mother once cured a patient, but used discord apples, an item deemed illegal and imprisioned for life, dying a criminal. They're such a sore spot for her that not even Lucy and Julian know about it.
  • Eye Patch Of Power: Wears one at all times.
  • Good Parents: She's proud of her children, she worries a bit about Lucy, but will feel relived if you say you're getting along well with her, despite the turbulent first meeting. She also makes sure to compliment Julian and let him know when he does a good job with his chores, something that makes Julian smile from ear to ear.
  • In the Blood: Her medicinal career comes from her family lineage.
  • Irony: For a doctor, she's not in the best health if her coughing in her dialogue text is anything to go by. She herself even says she's not in the best condition.
  • Just Think of the Potential!: Jokes (probably) about this when trying to convince Ares/Alice to be their guinea pigs. They obviously refuse.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: As a doctor, Simone wears a labcoat.
  • Mad Doctor: Played for laughs. While she's not on Marian levels of crazy, Simone mentions she'll be using the protagonist as their guinea pig should they keep coming to the clinic after fainting. She also offhandedly mentions wanting to test new medicines on them which understandably unnerves them. During Valentine's Day/White Day if your FP is high enough she'll give a cookie and make a joke about not having put anything weird in it... At least Ares/Alice hope it's a joke.
    • Another amusing example is in Priscilla's event where Julian plays the part of a princess in one of Priscilla's skits and he's still miffed about not being the prince, the main character. Simone says Julian is upset because he's playing the part of a "girl" and offers to test a gender-changing medicine on him. Julian thinks his mom is kidding... until he realizes she actually may be serious, which makes him freak out and bolt away from the clinic. Simone says she got carried away in being "evil" for her part. Or so she claims.
  • Meaningful Gift: Giving her Medicine related items is always a good choice since she mentions being rather low on stock. The really difficult ones, like Invinciroid and Levelizers, are her favorite ones. Being a doctor she naturally likes if you gift her Syringes.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: She's a mother of two, but she doesn't look much older than her daughter Lucy.
  • Permanent Elected Official: Besides being Rigbarth's local doctor she's also the mayor and organizes the events in town.
  • Professor Guinea Pig: Tests her own medicines on herself sometimes.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Simone is normally understanding and rarely has to intervene directly as Rigbarth's mayor, but there are times she has to put her foot down:
    • When Ludmila starts fooling around a bit too much with her "King's Game" and Simone realizes things can get out of hand very fast (and also be a real bad influence for the children as well), so she has to prohibit Ludmila and everyone else from playing the King's Game in Rigbarth.
    • In one of Lucas' events she has to ask him not to perform his magic tricks after it gets dark as she worries about Rigbarth's children since they like them so much they don't go home until Lucas finishes his show. Once one of the tricks accidentally scares and injures Yuki, she is forced to have him stop doing them for the time being.
    • Fuuka's romance events mentions Simone made Fuuka train and restrain herself from scratching people if she got spooked in order to accept her living in town as she couldn't take in someone who could hurt others, even if by accident, into Rigbarth.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: This isn't the first time Rune Factory has a town medic with a knack for using patients as test subjects. Marian used to do the very same thing, although Simone at least (usually) asks for permission before trying anything. And to keep another tradition since Rune Factory 3, she's yet another doctor with a distaste for tomatoes. Mariannote  and Jonesnote  had their reasons for not liking them, but Simone just plain dislikes them (shape, color and all that).
  • Tough Love: Played for laughs. She might ask the protagonist if they've been getting enough sleep. If the player answers negatively, the protagonist will mention they get "a LITTLE" sleep. Simone says its not good enough and threatens that if she catches them out at night she'll test out whatever medicine she chooses on them. The protagonist changes their tune.

    Julian

Julian

"Hey, quit treating me like a kid!"
Voiced by: Masami Suzuki (JP), Veronica Taylor (EN)

Simone's lively son and Lucy's younger brother. Loves to go exploring but gets lost easily. Always trying to show off for Hina.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Usually gets on Lucy's nerves due to his brashness and tendency to do things first and think later. Amusingly enough in Lucy's birthday Julian gives a "Will do anything you tell me" card and it's instantly used by Lucy asking to Julian to stop causing trouble for her.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite Julian being an Annoying Younger Sibling and Lucy claiming how much he gets on her nerves she really does care for him.
  • Berserk Button: Doesn't like to be treated as a kid.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: He's much more of a troublemaker than Hina is and often gets scolded by Simone and Lucy. One of his conversations has him trying to prank the protagonist into falling in a hole he dug. However, Julian does realize if he messes up bad or goes too far.
  • Determinator: Constantly loses when roughhousing with Hina, but never gives up. Apparently this is very common since the first time Ares/Alice see him doing this they freak out thinking Julian and Hina are fighting, but Lucy just tells them to calm down and watch.
  • Disappeared Dad: Hina mentions that his dad just works far away, while following Lucy's events reveals that he's a traveling archeaologist.
  • Fear of Thunder: He flinches in fear from lightnings during typhoons.
  • Free-Range Children: Downplayed. Julian often gets into trouble because he keeps getting lost and Lucy has to help him out.
  • Glass Cannon: Julian specializes in Fist weapons which gives great offense, and some defense, but with no shield to protect him. He can do a lot of damage, but will need you to keep an eye and healing spells to prevent him from getting knocked out all the time.
  • Hair Colors: Has white hair just like Lucy.
  • Hidden Depths: He wants to be stronger than Hina not only out of pride, but also because he wants to be the one protecting her.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: He's always training so he can become stronger. One of his random lines when in a party is him wishing to become stronger.
  • Insistent Terminology: He's not Hina's friend, he's Hina's rival and he will remind you of that fact anytime you say otherwise. Julian is a rival who likes to hang out with the one who he has a rivalry with (Hina) and gets very upset if said rival (Hina) ignores him or jealous if someone else is with his "rival" (Hina). He also doesn't get "lost", he just gets confused on the way back, that's all.
  • Kids Hate Vegetables: Naturally, as a kid, he doesn't like vegetables, but will accept them in his curry.
  • Jumped at the Call: Non-story related, but Julian often asks you to invite him to your adventures.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In one of Lucas' events his suggestions end up scaring Yuki and lightly injuring her and Julian ends up feeling very guilty, doubly so because this is what causes Simone to forbid Lucas from performing his magic tricks in Rigbarth.
  • No Sense of Direction: He's always getting lost or, ahem, "getting confused on the way back", no matter where he goes. Lucy often has to go find him when this happens.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Julian is capable of doing a lot of damage thanks to his Fist weapons which also tends to increase his defense a bit too making him a bit more durable in combat.
  • Power Fist: Julian specializes in Fist weapons to fight.
  • Puppy Love: Heavily implied. There are many, many events where Julian is trying to get closer to Hina:
    • He freaks out when he mistakenly thinks Hina has a crush on Palmo. He also says he wants to be stronger so that not only can he beat Hina in a fight, but also protect her. During the end of season Harvest Festivals if Julian asks a question about Hina and Ares/Alice answer they like her he'll react negatively. On White Day he gets really nervous about giving Hina cookies. Julian also gets peeved when he can't be the prince who will save the four pricesses (with Hina being one) in Priscilla's skit. He also gets worried sick when Hina runs away from home during one of Scarlett's events. Lucas, Simone and Misasagi all note how close he is to Hina, with the latter pondering she shouldn't interfere. Even during the ending where everyone in Rigbarth is sending their prayers so Ares/Alice come back safely from Audea he tries to wish he can get closer to Hina... only to think it's not the time for this.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Julian and Lucy share the same problem of being too prideful to ask for help to someone directly. Some of Lucy's behavior also rubbed off on Julian: he's very competitive, quickly declaring himself rivals with Hina and Ares/Alice, but he also wants to protect people he cares about and while how he does this differ from Lucy's, they both become panicked at the mere thought of people they care about being in danger.
  • The Rival: Claims to be one of Hina and declares his rivalry towards you the moment he realizes you're the one who saved her in Whispering Woods. It's mostly one-sided in both cases.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Curry dishes of any sort are his favorite gifts. It helps he is Unaffected by Spice. Additionally he also likes any fruit juice.
  • Tsundere: Of the classic Type A, especially towards Hina. He wouldn't be caught dead admitting how much he cares about her, but he'll be always ready to do anything to help or look cool in front of her.
  • Unaffected by Spice: He loves curry, and loves it SPICY. If the protagonist admits to him that they like it mild, he even teases them about it.

    Hina

Hina

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hina_4.png
"Today's a perfect day to play outside!"
Voiced by: Shiina Natsukawa (JP), Mela Lee (EN)

A young were-animal whom the protagonist saved from a monster attack, as well as Misasagi's daughter and Murakumo's niece. Somewhat impulsive and often distracted by anything new and exciting. Hard to read, and at times unaware of the impact her words can have on others.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: One of her random conversation has her asking one from Ares/Alice because this reminds her of her father.
  • Brutal Honesty: Hina is rather blunt and direct if something bothers her, but mostly because of her young age.
  • Buffy Speak: Being young Hina has a bit of trouble with words sometimes like saying how "woosh-wooshy" Spring winds can be when Summer is near.
  • Cheerful Child: Always bubbly and happy. Even more so after you save Misasagi.
  • Children Are Innocent: Hina doesn't really understand what "love" is and this ends up in a bit of a confusing event early on. She also has a hard time understanding the feeling as it is. In Fuuka's confession she mentions asking Hina and Misasagi about it, Hina had no idea what "love" is and Misasagi said she's too young to understand.
    • One of Scarlett's events has her running away after getting scolded by Misasagi for wandering off on her own. All Hina wanted to do was to find something to cheer her up since she saw her mother crying and she didn't understand Misasagi got angry at her because she was worried about her safety. At the end she innocently deduces "people who get mad at you care about you", so because Julian got "mad" at Hina for making him worried she is sure he likes her, and poor Julian is left confused.
  • Cute Bruiser: Cute as a button and perfectly capable of becoming strong enough to trounce boss monsters.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Simone told her all about the benefits of eating mushrooms. She still considers them yucky.
  • Disappeared Dad: He's implied to have died as she mentions that, while Julian's dad is working elsewhere, it must still be nice to have a dad at all and that she misses hers.
  • Dual Wield: Uses Dual Blades to protect herself. Her starting weapon is a pair of Back Scratchers.
  • Fear of Thunder: Not surprising given her age. During typhoons she'll get scared of lightning.
  • Freudian Slip: If left waiting while in your party she may sometimes call the protagonist "mommy" much to her own embarrassement.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Views Ares/Alice as a hero. Given they save her and later her mother's life it's not hard to see why. Misasagi even mentions she talks a lot about them at home.
  • Horned Humanoid: Hina has a couple of small black horns like her mother.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Hina is a fox-like were-animal.
  • Not So Above It All: Although generally well behaved, Hina is prone to mischief just as much as Julian. She plays along wearing a ghost costume starting a rumor around Murakumo's Inn and also tears up a doll while arguing with Julian.
  • The Nose Knows: Hina has a stronger sense of smell and feels safe and comfortable around people she trusts like her mother or Ares/Alice.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Dual Blades are naturally one of the most aggressive weapon types in the game and Hina also has a respectable STR growth. It's highly amusing to see the normally meek Hina (that was once threatened by a Wooly) using Gust Rune Ability, leaping in the air and tearing apart enemies, maybe even dragons in late game.
  • Precocious Crush: She has one on the protagonist. Once Ludmila moves into town and starts being overly affectionate with them Hina admits to feeling jealous, though she doesn't quite understand it beyond that her heart felt funny and wonders why.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Has pink hair and a very kind personality.
  • Stronger Than They Look: While she looks petite, she easily beats Julian to the ground while playing a game that she always wins at. This also extends to Hina's in-game statuses: her STR growth is noticeably higher than Julian's.
  • Sweet Tooth: Hot Chocolate and Ice Cream are some of her liked gifts.

    Elsje

Elsje

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elsje_3.png
"Boy, am I tired..."
Voiced by: Akari Kitou (JP), Faye Mata (EN)

The owner of Rigbarth's restaurant and Priscilla's older sister. Thinks doing just about anything requires too much effort, but is a force to be reckoned with when she feels like trying.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: A random conversation with Elsje has her doing this to Ares/Alice since they take on her advice to take a break and don't overwork themselves. They feel pretty embarrassed by it, but don't really protest.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Elsje has natural talent for what she does, but finds everything troublesome. Simone mentions she could easily be a world-class chef if she wanted. Fuuka also mentions she never bothers organizing and throwing stuff away, so she does it for Elsje.
  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: Always has her eyes half-opened due to her lazy disposition.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Her introduction has Priscilla worried sick about her since Elsje hasn't opened her restaurant in days. When Ryker manages to find a way inside... Elsje is just lazying around and wondering if she could get away with even more of that, much to Priscilla's consternation.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Her laziness makes her the foolish older sister to Priscilla.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: If invited to party up Elsje will rarely jump into combat herself unless she's absolutely pressured and attacked, but will often chuck food at the player and allies to heal them should they get too hurt.
  • Hair Colors: Has a white-grayish hair but it's pink in the end, just like Priscilla's.
  • In the Blood: She has inherited the restaurant from her parents. Or, as Elsje herself puts it, more like "was dragged by Simone" into accepting it.
  • Irony: Elsje is always one of the townsfolk that wakes up the earliest in Rigbarth starting her daily routine even earlier than Priscilla.
  • Money Spider: A rare NPC example. If you invite her on an adventure, and drop your health to critical levels, she'll start throwing food at you, if you step out of the way, your protagonist will not absorb the food and pick it up which you can sell. The edible prize you want her to throw is the Royal Curry which sells for 500,000 gold.
  • Odd Friendship: With Fuuka, who's a endless pool of energy. The two couldn't be more different from each other, but Elsje has a strong friendship with Fuuka and knows about her quirks more than others.
  • Power Fist: She makes use of Fist weapons to fight.
  • Professional Slacker: Elsje is mostly lazy and apathetic but she's good at what she does and even baffles Simone who is in disbelief at how fast he can get orders done just so she can laze around a bit more. She's always trying to cook up reasons to skip job, close her restaurant and, if Ares/Alice Cooking skill is high enough, suggesting them to work for her (or even take over her restaurant). One of her dialogues has her being serious for once... Only because she wants to find a way to finish her recipes as fast as possible.
  • The Slacker: Always lazying around. She could give Karina a run for her sleep.
  • Supreme Chef: Anyone who talks about Elsje's restaurant has nothing but praise for her food. She's also very skilled at using her kitchen knife and Priscilla mentions when she tried to do things as fast as Elsje she end up nicking her fingers.
  • Sweet Tooth: Very fond of sweets, a taste that Priscilla possibly got from her.
  • Taught by Experience: Elsje mentions being largely self-taught never having formal training even during the time she worked in the capitol.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Baked sweets like Chocolate Sponge, Chocolate Cake, Cheesecake and Pancakes are her favorites (all which have pretty demanding recipes).
  • You Monster!: Played for laughs. After a freak earthquake also freezes over the lake in Rigbarth due to a disruption in the local Runes, she views it as a perfectly good excuse to start skipping out on work. Fixing this problem causes her to call the protagonist a monster for taking that away from her.

    Misasagi

Misasagi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/misasagi_8.png
"Working hard?"
Voiced by: Yukiyo Fujii (JP), Erika Ishii (EN)

Murakumo's older sister and Hina's mother. Constantly doting on her daughter. Came to Rigbarth to see whether Murakumo was doing a good job running his inn.

  • Abusive Offspring: One of the town events has Murakumo making repairs to the inn only to cause more damage and mention his dad did the same thing at home and would receive an ear blistering lecture from Misasagi.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Murakumo calls her Misa.
  • Asian Fox Spirit: While looking for her for Hina, the protagonist finds a Nine Tailed Fox instead. Defeating it reveals it to be Misasagi herself, making her the only were-animal to actually have an animal form. In her humanoid form she has two tails, unlike her brother and daughter.
  • Beneath the Mask: Although she puts a very strong face for Hina there are few times where Misasagi cracks and show a more vulnerable side, such as when the topic of her husband comes up or whenever anything that makes her concerned about Hina comes up.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Usually calm, but stories from Hina and Murakumo mention she's not afraid to verbally rip people a new one if they mess up. The protagonist even mentions they've never seen her giving lectures and are glad for it. Even Hina is wary of her mother's strictness and warns Ares/Alice not to get on her bad side.
  • BFS: Wields longswords in combat. With some of the weapons in this category being long katanas (nodachis) to match her "foreigner from Eastern country in Norad" theme.
  • Cool Big Sis: Priscila, Lucy and Fuuka are all rather charmed by her mature side and Misasagi is more than glad to help them with more "womanly" topics.
  • Damsel in Distress: She's stuck in a monster form and must be defeated before reverting back to her human self.
  • Death Glare: Her portrait has a sharp look in her eyes and some conversations, such as when Ares/Alice wonders how she disciplines Hina, mentioning how she has a frightening glare.
  • Declaration of Protection: Vows and openly says she will protect and help Ares/Alice whenever they need in gratitude for what they've done for her and her daughter.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Dislikes pizza due to the amount of grease.
  • Good Parents: She does her best to give Hina a good life and nothing makes her happier than to see Hina living her life without worries in Rigbarth, during snowy days in Winter she's absolutely delighted when she tells Hina has been building one snowman after the other.
  • Horned Humanoid: Like her daughter, she has a pair of black horns despite otherwise being fox-like. This seems to be a female only trait of the fox-like were-animals as her brother, Murakumo, lacks them.
  • I Owe You My Life: Early in the game Ares/Alice save her from being stuck in a monster form. Misasagi says this verbatim in one of her day-to-day dialogues and is more always than willing to help Ares/Alice whenever they need.
  • Iron Lady: Some of her dialogue suggest she's been into fights before and she offers her help to crush anything that gets in your way. Ares/Alice are understandably surprised, and mildly freaked out, by this.
  • Mama Bear: Loves her daughter very much and is very protective of her. The fact Ares/Alice protected Hina is enough for the normally harsh Misasagi instantly trust them.
  • The Mourning After: She's heavily implied to still be mourning Hina's father, as the latter will mention seeing her cry at times.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She easily has the most titillating design in the game, being very well-endowed while also wearing an outfit that shows off a lot of her body.
  • Multiple-Tailed Beast: She has nine tails in her beast form, but only two tails in her humanoid form.
  • Pet the Dog: As strict as she is towards Murakumo, she does admit he's a good chef, despite not liking the pizza he offers.
  • Playing with Fire: Once she levels up enough she relearns the fire attack she had in her Nine-Tailed Fox form.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: A down-to-earth woman that loves her daughter and is secretly battle-hardened. Are we talking about Shino or Misasagi?
  • Tough Love: One of her dialogues has her wondering if she's too harsh on how she raises Hina due to being a single mother. Given that Hina has nothing but good things to say about her it's all in Misasagi's head. Misasagi is much more strict with Murakumo, however.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Magic-wise at least. She has unique access to the potent fire attack Nine-Tailed Fox had, but that's offset by her low INT and M.ATK growth. Give her a Magic Charm, however, and whatever she aims at is really going to feel it.

    Randolph

Randolph

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/runefactory5_randolph.png
"Hello there!"
Voiced by: Volcano Ota (JP), Frank Todaro (EN)

Runs the bakery with his beloved wife, Yuki. Never stops smiling and treats everyone with warmth and kindness. Takes his work seriously and constantly comes up with new ideas for bread.

  • BFS: Prefers to use Longswords when fighting.
  • Blood Knight: Downplayed. Although retired he just can't stop being an adventurer, as his Dark Secret entry elaborates. He also enjoys physical challenges such as armwrestling with Murakumo and Darroch as well.
  • Chef of Iron: Runs Rigbarth's bakery with his dear wife Yuki and he's still a formidable, if retired, adventurer.
  • Cool Old Guy: Despite his adventuring days being behind him, he can still hold his own in a fight and you can invite him to your party.
  • Dark Secret: Played for Laughs. When exposed to Lucy's cursed mirror he admits he isn't going out looking for new ingredients, he's just off having some minor adventures like he did in his youth. Yuki knew, and she's willing to accept it so long as he promises to always come home alive.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Rice and milk. Yuki gives an explanation for the milk. When he was younger, he ingested some Milk Porridge without checking the date and felt fine, but "the next day was a disaster".
  • Eyes Always Shut: His eyes are always closed, fitting with his warm, laid-back personality. The rare moments he opens them, means he's either being very serious, or you managed to really catch his attention.
  • Happily Married: To his wife, Yuki. They're still deeply in love despite having been married for decades— he's always thinking of nice things to do for her or ways to impress her, and she's extremely appreciative of his efforts. When a sudden earthquake happens in Rigbarth and Yuki suffers a home accident she mentions she never saw Randolph in a panic like that.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Always has a gentle smile. However Randolph mentions he wasn't always like that.
  • Retired Badass: He's a former adventurer, but despite his age, he's still strong enough to easily beat Darroch and Murakumo in armwrestling.
  • Rugged Scar: He has a prominent scar across his left eye, indicating that despite being a friendly old baker, he's also a Retired Badass.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Curry Manju. He's saddened it isn't considered bread so he can't really sell it in his bakery.
  • Weak, but Skilled: One of the reasons he can beat powerhouses like Darroch and Murakumo in an armwrestling contest. Cecil does note his grip technique and that Randolph doesn't use only raw strength.

"Still working hard, I see!"
Voiced by: Naoko Watanabe (JP), Philece Sampler (EN)

Runs the bakery with her beloved husband, Randolph. Never one to judge others, she has little fear of strangers and accepts people as they are.

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Implied in her backstory. While all the town's boys were in love with her in her younger days, she fell in love with the scarred-up drifter who wandered into town one day. They're Happily Married to the present day.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: She implies that, in her younger days, not everyone was happy with her choice to marry Randolph.
  • Granny Classic: Yuki is a kind elderly lady who runs the bread store with her husband Randolph and treats much of the cast as though they were her children or grandchildren.
  • Happily Married: To her husband, Randolph. They still adore each other despite having been married for decades—she gushes about how much she loves his cooking, and he's always doing his best to impress her.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: She was quite gorgeous when she was younger, and apparently all the local boys had their eyes on her. Unfortunately for them, she only had eyes for the drifter who blew into town one day.
  • Sweet Baker: She runs her ancestral bakery with her husband, Randolph, and is one of the nicest characters in town.

    Terry

"Good work today."
Voiced by: Taku Yashiro (JP), Joe Zieja (EN)

Knows a little bit about everyone and everything. Enjoyed puzzling over mysteries in his spare time, so one day he decided to become a full-blown detective. Quick to make plans and put them into action.

  • Badass Longcoat: Wears a distinct brown longcoat.
  • Cool Shades: Sports a pair of nice looking round glasses.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Uses Short Swords to fight and his first weapon is also a Cutlass.
  • Hyper-Awareness: He rarely relaxes and keeps his mind sharp when outside.
  • Jack of All Stats: Terry cannot use magic, but is a well-rounded fighter due to his Short Sword and shield specialization. He will also throw Mushrooms that will cause ailments like poison, sleep and paralysis against enemies.
  • Knowledge Broker: Comes with being a detective, he's always aware of what's happening in Rigbarth. Unlike Livia, Terry's agency has more intel on smaller cases, things that would go overlooked by SEED, so Cecil mentions he often works in conjunction with SEED.
  • Married to the Job: Close enough. Terry rarely leaves his Detective Agency and unless you go out of your way to meet him it's easy to spend days without seeing him in Rigbarth.
  • Meaningful Gift: Pendants. But he's very fussy about them.
  • Mellow Fellow: Terry is one of the coolest people in Rigbarth, he never raises his voice and always analyze everything with a calm mind before taking any action.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: When you start the game, he works in the town's general store. After Misasagi comes to town, he gives the shop to her and Hina to open his detective agency.
  • Not So Above It All: The normally serious and composed Terry isn't above making puns if he wins a festival. If he wins one of the end of season Harvest Festivals he'll mention he "dug up a lot of dirt about his crop".
  • Oddly Small Organization: The only employees we see in his agency are him and Cecil.
  • The Paranoiac: Downplayed. He sometimes feels someone may be having eyes on him, but he admits he may be just being a little too paranoid.
  • Parental Substitute: He's effectively this to Cecil. He mentions that with their parents not around, Cecil used to be depressed until Terry interested him to the mysteries, riddles and puzzles. Said missing parents are also why Cecil wishes to become his apprentice, which he reluctantly accepts.
  • Private Detective: Becomes one early on after passing down his store to Misasagi. Cecil mentions he works often with SEED. Terry does take less glamurous jobs like of the "if my significant other is cheating" kind, and while he isn't happy with them, it helps him pay the bills.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Terry, as the head of his detective agency, makes sure to assign the right cases to Cecil and prevent him from taking anything that would be dangerous. He also makes sure Ares/Alice are fine in working for a case related to SEED in Gadeus Grasslands considering they had quit after the events in Atohl's End.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Mentions he likes bread and milk. He also accepts doughnuts, apples, and popcorn.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Said almost word for word if he falls in battle.

    Heinz

Heinz

"You rang?"
Voiced by: Takumu Miyazono (JP), Kyle Hebert (EN)

Always acts like he's in the middle of a comedy routine. Owns the local crystal shop, but he'd much rather let someone else run his business while he takes off to have some fun. Can't seem to look people in the eyes when he talks.

  • Battle Cry: "Gotcha!" and a surprisingly amount of Kiai (yes, really) when using his strongest attacks.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: A natural comedian, Heinz occasionally attempts to rope others into such a routine to varying levels of success.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite all of his silly jokes and puns he is a competent salesman and, thanks to his expertise in gems, can quickly shut down con artists by playing up his eccentricity to the point of looking like he's Too Dumb to Fool. He also has a very sharp eye for valuable stones and notices them in the Blue Moon, Murakumo's inn.
  • Foul Medicine: He really doesn't like any sort of medicine and would rather cough his lungs out than take any Cold Medicine or pay Simone a visit.
  • The Gadfly: Heinz seems to enjoy messing with people from time to time, he seems to do it he most with Ares/Alice because they tend to react to him fooling around. He'll be even more more relentless if he feels you're trying to pull a fast one on him. He also likes to make jokes less around puns such as asking what Ares/Alice would gift Lucas only for them to catch on and realize Heinz wants to steal their idea.
  • Hidden Depths: Heinz is a clown at heart and is very fond of making the lamest of jokes, but he does have a more serious side to him and he takes his job at Crystalabra very seriously. While he's used to people not taking him seriously, it's dead obvious when he's actually expressing himself with sincerity.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Some of his jokes inevitably gets his reaction from everyone, not that he seems to mind. When Lucas moves in to Rigbarth and starts working at the Crystalabra Heinz start making puns left and right something Lucas makes a note of and Ares/Alice basically begs them not to learn this habit from Heinz. One particularly amusing example has him telling a time he made lots of puns to Livia only for her to tell "a day or two in in the dungeon wouldn't be too bad for [Heinz]", Heinz thinks she was joking. Probably.
  • Glory Seeker: He mentions wanting to discover a new type of mineral so it can have his name in it, something like "Heinzite".
  • Married to the Job: Attempting to confess your love to him will have him turn you down by saying he's married to his gemstones.
  • Meaningful Gift: Being owner of a crystal shop he really likes the rare ones. And one of the rarest crystals there is the Crystal Skull.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: He's quick to catch on to a con artist attempting to sell him a fake ruby. He enrages the man by in turn either by offering to pay with simple things like food in the Japanese version or, in the English version, whatever the G might be in the con artist's 2,000,000G offer, such as Giggles or Guffaws. This is even after it was clarified that G is Gold.
  • Out of Character:
    • A few of his conversations has him genuinely thanking Ares/Alice for all they've done for Rigbarth with no "dad jokes", or puns involved, and even they are taken by surprise by this. Heinz also knows not many people take him very seriously due to his fondness for clowing around, but he truly means it.
    • The fake ruby incident has the con artist accuse Lucas of replacing his gems with fakes citing he saw one of Lucas' performance teleporting items. Heinz tells the guy in a dead serious voice and without making jokes that the only person putting on a performance right now is him.
  • Pungeon Master: At times his attempts at comedy run through various puns, such as insisting that a stairway to heaven would be terrifying because it is of course a ghost story.note  This particular pun gets a visible Sweat Drop from the main character and Cecile, while Fuuka admits to having no idea what Heinz is talking about.
    • As for some English version puns there are times he emphasizes where the joke is. He considers fishing contests to be a good opporTUNAty to show his skills and enjoys gloomy weather or perhaps just has CLOUDED judgment.
  • Troll: One the town events has Heinz going off in what he claims to be a "very secret" errand. At first Ares/Alice just happens to bump into him, but Heinz keeps playing up his secretiveness saying he absolutely cannot tell them what he's up to. It all comes to a head when Heinz realizes he is being tailed by them... And tells he had no secret at all. It was just a stroll around Rigbarth and he found it funny to make Ares/Alice follow him around. They had fun in the end, so no harm was done.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Heinz uses axes while having a high INT, but poor STR growth (it's like a bad joke). But give him a Magic Charm and he'll be dishing heavy attacks on par with Darroch.

    Darroch

Darroch (JP: Dogu)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/runefactory5_darroch.png
"Hello there."
Voiced by: Hirofumi Nojima (JP), Taylor Henry (EN)

A dwarven blacksmith who owns the True Strike Smithy. Always sees his customers' requests through, no matter what they've commissioned. Acts humble around the town's older ladies, who have all known him since his younger days.

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Well, caretakers. One event has Livia, Yuki and Simone reminiscing Darroch's younger days much to his embarrassement. It gets to the point even Ares/Alice feels sorry for him.
  • The Blacksmith: He does this for a living at the Strike Forge.
  • Ear Ache: Darroch is shown to be suffering from hearing loss with all that hammer work. Trying to talk to him while he's working in the forge using his hammer is useless. He'll mishear and misinterpret everything you tell him for a while until his sense of hearing recovers. One of Martin's events shows this cause trouble for Darroch as he mishears the clients and some get impatient enough to leave without buying/ordering anything.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: He's level 30 by default, but Martin's love story has him injured by an early Kelve Lava Caves monster. Additionally his Ear Ache problem only shows in cutscenes and events (though it would be highly inconvenient otherwise).
  • Gentle Giant: A very kind soul who carefully mentors Martin. He's also kind of huge.
  • Meaningful Gift: Being a blacksmith he likes any kind of craftable ore with rare ones, like Orichalcum and Dragonic Stone, being his favorites.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: One of the characters with highest STR growth which is hardly surprisingly given his size.
  • Noodle Incident: His sleeping dialogue has him muttering that he doesn't want to be Simone's errand boy anymore.
  • One Man's Trash Is Another's Treasure: He likes Scrap Metal saying that while it's useless to most people, it has its uses in the forge.
  • One-Steve Limit: His name in Japan is actually Doug. But because Doug (who was called Dag in Japan) already claimed the name for English, this character became Darroch.
  • Our Dwarves Are Different: Like Gaius and Bado before him, he's keeps the position of town's dwarven blacksmith. Unlike the dwarf stereotype he's freaking tall (like Bado) and also big.
  • The Quiet One: In his shop he can be oddly chatty, but if you talk to him outside Darroch usually is straight to the point.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He likes most salted fish dishes.

    Palmo

Palmo Creacie de Sainte-Coquille

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/runefactory5_palmo.png
"You're a brilliant ball of sunshine today!"
Voiced by: Takahiro Fujimoto (JP), Ethan Murray (EN)

Rigbarth's master carpenter. His reputation as an amazing architect brings in requests from the royal palace and far-flung regions across the sea. He constructed most of the buildings in Rigbarth.

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Palmo has a habit of speaking like this. Though normally limited to describing something such as "warmest welcome" or "fantabulous furniture" he does occasionally get more long winded with it.
Palmo: "Behold my confectionary creation! Elsje provided the ingredients, and I spared no effort in erecting this edible edifice of excellence!"
  • All-Loving Hero: Almost always carries a positive attitude. Not even a tree trunk crushing him or an ensuing cut on his hand brings out any pessimism.
  • Big Eater: He wouldn't be a de Sainte-Coquille otherwise. But this is mostly downplayed as he rarely mentions food at all compared to his predecessors. Especially the ones from Sharance and Selphia.
  • Big Fun: Just like the de Sainte-Coquille before him he's one big ball of cheerfulness and optimism, even if he's a bit eccentric.
  • Bizarrchitecture: The man would gladly rebuild Rigbarth as a strange avant-garde work of art, with little consideration for how well it could actually serve as a town. He even tells the protagonist that it took the town forming an Angry Mob to stop him, and the threat of it happening again is all that has kept him from continuing that work in the middle of the night. Lackadaisy is one example of such a work that was finished, being half ship half restraunt.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Runs in the de Saint-Coquille family. He's an eccentric and rather campy fellow, but he's a master carpenter who's always in pursuit of new woodworking feats. Livia also notices how quirky Palmo is and worries about this, but he's so skilled he does jobs for the royal family— in fact Ryker mentions he has so many orders lined up it's enough keep him busy for years.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Squids. Although it doesn't prevent him from participating in the squid catching contest and having a positive attitude, unlike Priscilla.
  • Friend to All Living Things: His architecture career started when a storm destroyed a bird nest. Taking pity on the birds, he built them a birdhouse and expanded from there.
  • Gonk: Just like every de Sainte-Coquille patriarch before him.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: He likes to pepper his lines with some form of foreign word, like "grazie" if you give him something he likes or "gomen nasai" if he has to refuse your party invitation.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: One amusing conversation has him accidentally spewing he's working on a secret project for the nobility and he curses himself using "ETHELBERD'S BEARD!"
  • Large Ham: Easily one of the louder, more excitables characters in Rigbarth.
  • Meaningful Gift: Palmo's favorite items are generally odd (like him) and difficult to find, like Thunderbird Feather, Fairy Elixir and Devil Horn. For more mundane tastes he enjoys things he can work with like Lumber and Material Stones.
  • Money Dumb: Palmo was nearly scammed out of over two million gold for a fake ruby before Lucas, Heinz, and the protagonist stopped the conartist. Even if it had been real, a ruby's buying price is merely 7000G.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Palmo is implied to be very well off, but still works because he just loves too much what he does.
  • Parental Substitute: Palmo took in Ryker after the latter's family fell apart, and while he does occasionally gripe about Ryker's lack of work ethic, he still loves and values him like a son, even mentioning such if Ares/Alice invites him to the Firefly Festival.
  • The Pollyanna: One of his random quotes mentions the day of today he's fated to have the worst of lucks. Palmo's response? Be happy, because this means it can only get better from there!
  • Power Fist: Palmo uses Fist weapons to fight and starts with Boxing Gloves, a pretty powerful weapon for early game.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Less so than his alliterations, but he occasionally talks like this.
Palmo: HI-HO, HI-HO! It's work to home we go!
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Shares a similar appearance to other Sainte-Coquille family members seen in previous Rune Factory games.

Guests

    Doug

Doug

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/runefactory5_doug.png
"Yo!"
Voiced by: Toshiki Masuda (JP), Yuri Lowenthal (EN)

A dwarven traveler on a personal mission: to serve as a bridge between the citizens of Norad and the old empire in order to prevent needless suffering. He is a visitor from Selphia.

  • The Atoner: Doug mentions he's done things he isn't proud of and helping people wherever he travels to is a form of atonement.
  • Continuity Cameo: Makes several mentions from his life in Selphia:
    • Seeing someone multi-talented like Ares/Alice is a dead ringer for Lest/Frey, speaking of them, Doug wonders if Ares/Alice fell from the sky too, to which they respond in a bemused way "Wouldn't that be fatal?".
    • Doug mentions someone who took care of him during difficult times. Whether he's talking about Blossom or someone else is never specified.
    • He also makes mention of Porcoline's restaurant, surprised you always get what you order in Lackadaisy (since Porco had the habit of eating his own delicious food before it could be delivered).
    • Doug also is surprised to see how dilligent Darroch is and that he isn't always trying to come up with some ridiculous "get rich quick" scheme like Bado used to.
    • He makes a small pass at Dyllas in one of his conversations as well.
  • Disc-One Nuke: Starts out at Level 30 with a rather powerful weapon for early game. If you befriend him at early game Doug can make mincemeat of anything that gets in his way.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Still doesn't like anything bread related. It doesn't stop him from visiting the bakery, though.
  • The Drifter: Unlike Margaret who's visiting Rigbarth looking for inspiration, Doug is simply walking from place to place while helping people in need.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Since the events of Rune Factory 4, Doug's hair is now longer and tied back into a ponytail.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Like in his previous appearance, his weapons are Short Swords.
  • Long-Lived: As much as Margaret apparently. Decades later and he look more mature, but his appearance hasn't aged that much.
  • Playing with Fire: He can still use fire spells in conjunction with his weapons.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: His taste for rice meals hasn't changed and most rice recipes are among his favorite gifts.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: Has none of the mental bagage weighting him down anymore and is living a peaceful life in Rigbarth.

    Margaret

Margaret

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/runefactory5_margaret.png
"Hi, how are you?"
Voiced by: Aoi Yūki (JP), Stephanie Sheh (EN)

An elven musician who arrived at Rigbarth in search of inspiration and ideas for new songs. She is a visitor from Selphia.

  • Affectionate Nickname: One of her conversations mention she feels weirded out by not being called "Meg" by a de Sainte-Coquille since she's gotten so used to it in Selphia by Porcoline de Sainte-Coquille, her foster father.
  • Continuity Cameo: Just like Doug she's a visitor from Selphia. Margaret mentions Porcoline and her time working there.
  • Disc-One Nuke: Starts already at Level 30 with a decent arsenal of magic. Margaret can easily nuke things from a distance while you fight at closer ranges.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Squids still disgust her something fierce. She even composed a weird song to express how much she dislikes it.
  • Freudian Slip: She will mention an embarrassing time she called Palmo "Porcoline" since the de Sainte-Coquille patriarchs look so alike. It doesn't help that Palmo is about as flamoyant and eccentric as Porcoline.
  • Happily Married: She has a family and children and wants to bring them to visit Rigbarth one day.
  • Long-Lived: Being an elf her appearance has barely changed even decades after the events of Rune Factory 4.
  • Red Mage: Capable of wielding offensive and support magic. Unlike in Rune Factory 4 Margaret is more willing to jump into action rather than staying behind healing.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Prelude to Love is still one of her absolute favorites. She even wrote a song about it.
  • Wandering Minstrel: She's been traveling in order to find inspiration for her music.

Other Characters

Warning: All characters below are Walking Spoilers. Read at your own risk.

    Gideon

Warden Gideon (JP: Gandage)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/runefactory5_gideon.png
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (JP), Brad Venable (EN)

The Warden and founder of SEED. Unified countless peacekeeping agencies to make the organization what it is today. Refuses to tolerate evil in any shape or form.

  • Big Bad: The final main boss of the second arc.
  • Bad Boss: He has a bad tendency of getting rid of people who can become problematic, or that are no longer useful to him. During the story he tries to off every person that has allied themselves with him, including Oswald and even Radea.
  • Berserk Button: He wasn't the most sane person to begin with and Livia calling him "traitor" to SEED pushes that button really hard, especially since he considers everything he's done justified in the name of peace.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: His first big plan involves doing this trope to the whole world to stop injustice.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Whereas Ethelberd wanted full control of the world merely because of his megalomaniac insanity and would bring war to other countries, Gideon wants to rid the world of all conflict and injustice. Additionally, unlike Ethelberd who went out of his way to obtain as much power as he could, Gideon did not seek his "source" of power, the Fathomless Dread, the Fathomless Dread found Gideon. Lastly Ethelberd possessed someone while Gideon was the one who got possessed.
  • The Corruption: Being corrupted by Fathomless Dread also gave him immense powers. He's able to down Radea in her dragon form and then Ares/Alice with one attack each.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He made sure his main base of operations, SEED Floating Fortress, is all but unreachable. It can be only accessed by a spell only Gideon knows, it has traps that will alert anyone trying to use magic to get close and has enough firepower that even a Farm Dragon has no chance of getting close to it. It takes a literal divine intervention for Ares/Alice to get to it which is something Gideon couldn't foresee at all. And even then he had taken the precaution of setting defensive measures from anything that could come from Cloudheim: a huge monster, Uroboros, and a squad of SEED rangers loyal to him to blast away anyone that still got through it. Sheesh.
  • Demonic Possession: It turns out that he was possessed by a Fathomless Dread that resembles a skeletal fish. He rids himself of it after getting defeated by the protagonist and hearing a "Reason You Suck" Speech from Livia.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Shows up fairly early in the story to round up Oswald who's been causing quite a ruckus in Rigbarth. And it's not until the very end he shows up in person again. Long after his true colors and intentions were revealed by both Oswald and Radea.
  • Exclusive Enemy Equipment: Averted. His sword, Braveheart, can be crafted at Skill 89. It does require Weapon Breads+ to learn its recipe and one of its materials to craft it can only be found in Rigbarth Maze, after you finish the game.
  • Fatal Flaw: Obsession. He becomes so fixated on his idea of a perfect, peaceful world without injustice that the fear of never achieving it is enough for the Fathomless Dread to corrupt him. Such obsession is, after being corrupted, what leds him to the extremes he goes for when enacting his plans in Rigbarth.
  • Fallen Hero: Scarlett mentions he was one of the people that helped found SEED unifying several town guards and watches into it, protecting the people after the collapse of the Sechs Empire. Livia also implies Gideon was a much more heroic and selfless person before being led astray by the Fathomless Dread.
  • Freudian Excuse: Gideon is a survivor of the Norad-Sechs War and became obsessed with justice creating SEED in order to prevent anyone from suffering everything he had to endure. Watching injustice and people doing whatever they pleased without any punishment only made him seek for any means to control them even more. However he soon realized this was an almost impossible task and unfortunately the Fathomless Dread preyed upon his fear of never achieving his goal in order to creep into his heart and have him do everything he did in the story.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: After taking enough damage he ditches his sword and goes all out using every bit of the powers granted by the Fathomless Dread fighting barehanded.
  • Graceful Loser: After being defeated despite all his power he's forced to hear what Livia has to say. This is what finally triggers his Heel Realization.
  • Hearing Voices: The Demonic Possession first manifests as voices in Gideon's head. It's More than Mind Control since it encourages his extremism towards his ultimate goal without him even realizing it until Livia says it to his face.
  • Heroic Willpower: Once Gideon realizes he was a Well-Intentioned Extremist indeed he expels the Fathomless Dread from his body on his own. To put this in perspective: it took all the willpower and prayers of the people of Rigbarth with help of Livia and Radea to force that thing out of Ares/Alice after it possessed them after the final battle.
  • Heel Realization: After hearing a "Reason You Suck" Speech from Livia, Gideon realizes he may have gone too far in his quest for absolute justice.
  • Knight Templar: Fits this trope to a T. Gideon thinks everything he has done was for the betterment of the world. He also has perfectly good reasons for wishing to create a world with no injustice, especially since 1 and 4 had shown how bad the Norad-Sechs conflict could get and he mentions the aftermath of the war wasn't any prettier. It's not clear how deluded he was before his corruption, thinking everything he did was in the name of justice, and how much was from the Fathomless Dread messing with his mind.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Told Radea an Earthmate killed her sister and on top of that messed with her runes which made Radea much more violent and likely to obey him.
  • Mirror Boss: In the first phase of the fight against him Gideon fights much like a player character would: dashing to close in, using combo strikes and, after gaining some distance, blasting a Rune Ability to catch anyone recklessly charging in or trying to pressure him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After a particularly scathing lecture from Livia, Gideon realizes he was indeed weak and was corrupted by the Fathomless Dread.
  • One-Handed Zweihänder: Gideon wields a Braveheart, a Long Sword, when fighting you and he does it one-handed save for when he's readying his Rune Abilities.
  • Order Is Not Good: He aims to rid the world of conflict by creating absolute order. The first attempt has him trying to strip people's emotions and when that proves to be unreliable he goes for a more pragmatic, and even more tyrannical, approach: using his floating fortress as a immense weapon to keep people under control with fear.
  • Position of Literal Power: Warden of SEED and his presence commands authority. Having the power of the Fathomless Dread turns him into one of the more dangerous people in the world and he proves it by effortlessly defeating Radea and Ares/Alice at one point.
  • Redemption Equals Death: After expelling the Fathomless Dread from him Gideon takes a powerful attack from it meant for Livia, Radea and Ares/Alice. Livia says he had returned to his true self before succumbing to his wounds.
  • Sword of Damocles: Once he realizes his first plan won't work he aims to force "peace" in the world this using his floating fortress and raw power.
  • Taking the Bullet: After the Fathomless Dread comes out of him, Gideon apologizes for his actions and soon takes a hit from the now-free Fathomless Dread after it attacks the protagonist and Livia.
  • Walking Spoiler: Aside from the fact that he's the Warden of SEED it's quite difficult to talk about him without spoiling most of the game's story.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He seeks to rid of the world of all war and conflict, it's something that even Livia can understand and get behind. His methods of achieving this goal, however, are less than moral which includes kidnapping, manipulation, brainwashing, backstabbing and numerous attempted murders.
  • Weapons That Suck: Uses a magic circle to suck up runes, it has the side effect of constricting the one inside it rendering them helpless. He does this to Radea in Calamity's Edge.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Being corrupted by the Fathomless Dread gave him immense power, but let's say it didn't do much for his mind.

    Oswald

Oswald

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/runefactory5_oswald.png
Voiced by: Chafurin (JP), SungWon Cho (EN)

A Rune Poacher and the leader of a bandit group comprised mainly of social misfits and those who have nowhere else to go. If there's trouble, then you can bet that he has something to do with it.

  • Even Evil Has Standards: While he admits that SEED rounding up him and his fellow bandits isn't unusual, he's disgusted their method consisted of siccing vicious monsters on them.
  • Genre Savvy: After getting betrayed but surviving the attempt on his life he wisely decides to scram since he knows very well what will happen to him if he gets caught by Gideon. After Ares/Alice manages to track him down in Basada's Hideaway he apparently moves out from Rigbarth region entirely.
  • Goldfish Poop Gang: Oswald spends the first arc of the game running around causing problems, only to be arrested and later escape to do it again. He's quickly removed from the story in the second arc after revealing the identity of the true villain, sticking around just long enough to send Ludmila to live in Rigbarth, and showing up once more just long enough to explain where to find them and how impossible it is to reach them.
  • The Informant: Gives information about SEED HQ in the sky, warning the protagonist that they can't just fly a dragon up there as Gideon's castle defenses would blow them out of the sky.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Asks Ares/Alice to rescue Ludmila and once she's rescued tells her to stay in Rigbarth since she had nothing to do with Gideon's plans and has dreams of settling down in a village someday.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: After the events Atohl's End when Radea, under Gideon's orders, tried to kill Ares/Alice and Scarlett and him, to tie up loose ends, Oswald gets pissed at Gideon enough to rat him out to Livia asking only for his freedom in exchange. Even later he's still pretty miffed about the whole ordeal, so much he also talks about his secret base in the sky.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Despite his goofy, non-threatening, appearance Oswald causes a lot of trouble for Rigbarth's SEED any time he shows up. And weren't for Livia's precautions he could easily have killed Scarlett in Atohl's End, especially since he was "controlling" Radea at the time.
  • Pet the Dog: The only decent thing about him is that he does care for his group. He pays Ares/Alice a significant amount of money for them to save Ludmila. When that's done he encourages her to settle down in Rigbarth and leave her dangerous life behind. He also cut ties with her so Gideon wouldn't have any reason to target her.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: While asking Ares/Alice to rescue Ludmila was genuinely for her sake, he gives them their reward upfront reasoning to himself that if he pays up now, it'll be harder for them to quit the job later.
  • Precision F-Strike: Gives one of the only bits of profanity in the game when questioned about how to find where Gideon is at as he tells the protagonist that even if he told them, it "won't make a damn lick of difference". The only other instance of it being their follow up to his explanation of the level of complexity and defenses in the way with a simple "damn".
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: At the end of Chapter 1 he is well aware that he's of no use to Gideon anymore and decides to quickly and quietly get out of Dodge after ensuring Ludmila's safety. His only appearance in Chapter 2 has him giving further information on Gideon's schemes and disappearing from Rigbarth again, this time seemingly for good.
  • The Unfought: You never fight him directly. At best you face whatever thing he sics at you whenever you bump into him.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He just disappears from the plot after finding him in Basara's Hideaway.

    Radea

Radea

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/runefactory5_laedia.png
"You...! I'll never forgive you!"
SPOILER
Voiced by: Miku Itō (JP), Alexis Tipton (EN)

  • Action Bomb: If she eats too many runes, they have to be extracted from her by Livia or else she'll explode. Livia mentions the explosion would be powerful enough to wipe out the entire Norad. She does explode in the final act and said explosion is powerful enough to create a crack between dimensions where the Fathomless Dread plans to use to escape.
  • Aloof Ally: Downplayed. Once she moves into town Radea mentions she has no interest in becoming part of Rigbarth's community and almost everyone in town mentions how cold and distant she is. With that said, she has nothing against Ares/Alice, if anything they became a soft spot for her (besides Livia). Radea also participates in events on her own volition and will congratulate whoever wins.
  • Back from the Dead: She's introduced being revived from just a skull by Oswald and, accidentally, the protagonist who was unaware of their Earthmate powers.
  • Badass in Distress: She gets captured by Gideon near the end of the story and taken to Calamity's End for his "final justice" plan.
  • Battle Cry: "Prepare yourself!" when using strong weapon attacks. "I'll destroy you!" or "Damn you!" when using her shadow flame attack.
  • Berserk Button:
    • She really hates Ares/Alice. The mere sight of them is enough to send her into a barely contained fury.
    • Gideon becomes one for her after all the crap he put her through. Once she meets him again she doesn't waste time and transforms into Umbradea to deal with him. Unfortunately this ends up backfiring horribly.
  • Big Little Sister: She looks considerably older than her older sister Livia.
  • Big Sister Worship: Radea clearly loves her sister and being told that an Earthmate killed her, alongside Gideon messing with her runes (consequently her mind) made her grow an anger of homicidal proportions towards Ares/Alice. Once that mess is cleared she moves to Rigbarth and the first thing she always do during the day is visit Livia. She also makes sure to let you know what Livia likes if you didn't know before.
  • Blow You Away: One of her more powerful attacks are creating tornadoes surrounding her.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Gideon manipulated her runes, which left her more obedient and emotionally unstable than she normally is. While in this state, she almost blows herself up by absorbing an excessive amount of corrupted runes.
  • Breath Weapon: Can spit fireballs in her dragon form. She uses this to get rid of a SEED squad hampering Ares/Alice in Cloudheim.
  • Cool Crown: Has a crown of flowers behind her horns. It symbolizes Radea's gentler nature behind her rough exterior.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Her Dark Dragon form is far from evil. If anything it's absolutely necessary to keep the world in balance by absorbing corrupted runes for Livia and her death would have dire consequences.
  • Day Hurts Dark-Adjusted Eyes: She feels sunny days are a bit "too bright" for her tastes. Being the Dark Dragon has its cons, okay?
  • Death Glare: Holy crap does she have an intense look in her eyes. Given how she starts outright hating Ares/Alice it's not surprising she eyes them with nothing but a vengeful glare.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: The biggest example, even Lucy and Scarlett comes off a immediate best buddies compared to Radea— she starts flat out hating Ares/Alice all thanks to being manipulated by Gideon. Once you do start befriending her she slowly opens up revealing a caring side that normally only Livia sees.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Or rather the opportunity for friendship. While not a villager exactly, Radea will stay at Murakumo's inn like the guest characters after being beaten. The protagonist can develop a slight friendship with her like anyone else after that. Her rank can't be raised past 2, nor will she ever join the protagonist's party even with the Companion Crest, until the postgame however.
  • Demonic Possession: After the protagonist beats the fish-like Fathomless Dread out of Gideon, it then possesses Radea which forces her to absorb enough runes to cause an explosion, creating a hole between dimensions so it can escape.
  • Does Not Know How to Say "Thanks": Even when gifting something she likes, she accepts with immediate distrust. Radea has a hard time accepting help in general thinking others are buttering her up to ask for something. With that said she's openly thankful if you heal her.
  • Fatal Flaw: Lack of self-control. More specifically over her anger and impulsiveness. It makes her easy to be manipulated by Gideon even before he messed with her runes since she trusts him after his information turns out to be good, not even bothering to think why he would help her. Later on she recklessly attacks him in blind rage with no plan only to be defeated by him despite being in her dragon form. On a lighter note Livia also knows this and has to calm her down the first time Radea goes to Rigbarth when she was still upset with everything, Livia even calls her "bonehead".
  • Femme Fatalons: She has some scary looking crimson nails and is definitely not someone you want to mess with.
  • Fish out of Water: When she moves to Rigbarth she mentions being rather uncomfortable with all the peace and quiet.
  • Hey, You!: She has no reason to be respectful towards Ares/Alice and refuses to even acknowledge them as more than something to get rid of. This attitude doesn't change much when she moves to Rigbarth, although with time she actually tries not to sound too rude.
  • Horned Humanoid: Has some pretty intimidating horns.
  • Long-Lived: Comes with being a dragon. In her 100 FP dialogue Radea is painfully aware that she will outlive Ares/Alice.
  • Meaningful Gift: Her favorite gifts are dragon items: teeth and scales which seems odd... Until you realize Livia rewards you with one of her scales and claws if you work hard. It's also possible Radea collects these as they remind her of Livia too.
  • Meaningful Name: As with her sister and all other major dragons her true name, Umbradea, relates to her being the Dark Dragon.
  • Morality Chain: Her sister. Losing her is what made Radea join Gideon and become immediately hostile towards Ares/Alice, who is an Earthmate. Later it's revealed her sister is Livia and once Radea realizes Livia is alive she stops working for Gideon without a second thought.
  • Mood-Swinger: She can go from cold to freaking ballistic in a matter of seconds. All due to having her runes manipulated. Even after she moves in to Rigbarth she has some scary mood swings with Ares/Alice even wondering if they'll ever be able to say the right thing to her.
  • Multi-Melee Master: Radea is unique in that despite using an axe she will perform Rune Abilities from other weapons: Round Break (Short Sword), Flash Strike (Long Sword) and Gust (Dual Blades).
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After she is saved one of the first things she does is apologize for everything she's done. Once you befriend her, Radea mentions in one of her conversations she's grateful that you reunited her again with her sister and shows signs of regret about everything that happened before.
  • No-One Could Have Survived That: She is assumed dead near the end of the story after she explodes.
  • Not Bad: How she reacts when you give her something she likes. Often followed by "don't let it go to your head"
  • Not So Above It All: She enjoys watching the festivals of Rigbarth and will go to them despite her initial cold attitude.
  • Precision F-Strike: Calls Ares/Alice a bastard for killing her sister when you meet her in Bandit King's Old Base.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She's a dragon, a Dragon God, so she's probably much older than anyone living in Rigbarth sans Livia.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Whenever Radea is very, very happy she makes the same silly face Livia does when she gets a Pumpkin Flan. Radea is also a bit of a Bookworm since it's very likely she'll be reading something when she visits Livia.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Radea is much more prone to emotional reactions and outbursts compared to Livia who is level-headed and rational. And even though both are cautious around people they don't know, Radea is more standoffish and closed while Livia is seemingly more outspoken and carefully receptive.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Radea has a hard time being honest with her feelings to say the least, but the more you befriend her the harder it gets for Radea to keep her cold, aloof attitude towards you. One amusing conversation has Ares/Alice complimenting her hair color only for her to get charmingly embarrassed about it, before recomposing herself. Whenever she's nice to Ares/Alice they react with surprise much to her annoyance and there are several occasions she says harsh things but with good intentions. Unfortunately, unlike Dolce, she has no one to "translate" her harsh words.
  • Tears of Joy: Once she sees that Livia is alive and there to save her.
  • Tragic Bigot: She hates Earthmates for sealing her sister away and reducing her to bones, basically killing her.
  • Tsundere: The type A towards Ares/Alice. Radea is the most straightforward example of all complete with "not that I care about you" phrases. She's basically never openly affectionate and almost always tries to pass off as if she didn't care much about them, but she also makes sure to talk enough so they don't misunderstand her words.
  • Vacuum Mouth: In her dragon-form, she is capable of vacuuming runes from seemingly everywhere and everyone. Prolonged exposure, at least at close range, is lethal and both Oswald and Scarlett only survive one time Radea did this because they had Rune Crystals at hand to counter its effects.
  • Voluntary Shape Shifter: Like her sister, she is also a dragon that can take on human form. And you must fight her dragon form at one point in the story.
  • Walking Spoiler: Even more so than Gideon. Addressing her mere existence spoils considerable portions of the story as she wasn't even an advertised character.
  • Why Am I Ticking?: She only explodes during the story while under Demonic Possession.
