I’ve actually been thinking we need just this sort of cleanup, ever since certain controversies erupted during the Pokémon Sword and Shield prerelease.
I don’t even see old design Sonic brought up in discussions often any more anyway, except to say how people are glad that a redesigned happened. I’m for the chop.
SoundCloudShouldn't this be Long Term? The misuse is pervasive and consistent.

Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessThanks
Now, let's start off again by looking at the entire Western Animation folder of Memetic Loser. A lot of these don't have context (Backyardigans), aren't actually exaggerating their weakness (X-Men), Or somehow are this both in-universe and out, which wouldn't make them Memetic Losers (Futurama). Some characters aren't even fighters at all (Caillou).
- My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Twist is usually mocked because of her dorky appearance and the lispy way she speaks.
- The Professor, the main villain of the TV Felix the Cat cartoons, is one in-and-out of universe, simply because he's such a pathetic villain who is doomed to always lose to Felix and get his butt handed to him either by the cat, his own hand, or just sheer bad luck. Theres a reason he's considered one of the poster childs for both Harmless Villain and Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain.
- Ma-Ti from Captain Planet and the Planeteers. To the point that this very Wiki named a trope after the supposed lameness of his powers. When in actuality, Heart Is an Awesome Power, and much more practical than say, his fellow Planteer Wheeler's ability to accidentally burn down a forest if he's not careful (to say nothing of having a power that can never be used directly against the enemy since a children's cartoon could never get away with setting people on fire).
- Master Shake from Aqua Teen Hunger Force can be considered this as he's a Too Dumb to Live Self-Disposing Villain protagonist who dies in almost every episode he's in.
- Dr. Zoidberg from Futurama is so unlucky that he's the Trope Namer for My Friends... and Zoidberg.
- South Park:
- Kyle has become this due to always being humiliated by Cartman or the Villain of the Week.
- Cartman himself. While a Manipulative Bastard and an occasional Karma Houdini, his hilariously pathetic depiction whenever he does get his comeuppance makes him this, often bawling like a two year old or shirking from the mildest of physical threats.
- Kenny, Trope Namer for They Killed Kenny Again.
- Al Gore is treated as this in-universe by the entire town. Apparently, he desires attention and appreciation for his hunt for ManBearPig, but unsurprisingly nobody cares.
- Super Friends: NONE of the Super Friends are particularly cool in hindsight, not even the ones based upon badasses. To elaborate:
- Even if they were all busy saving the world Once per Episode, like Batman, they're still this. It's common in parodies for the Super Friends to be portrayed as overly friendly, old-timey, cheesy heroes that wouldn't be able to hold a candle to the Darker and Edgier later interpretations of the Justice League and what they go up against.
- As noted above Aquaman gets this a lot because of his Super Friends version. Unlike the other heroes on the show though, for a long time it tainted the public's perception of him in other media as well (hence why he also gets his own mention in the comics section).
- The Wonder Twins are often mocked and parodied for having a cheesy power set. Zan, the one that could take the form of water, gets this twice as hard because of how his power looks next to Jayna's ability to turn into any animal. As pointed in a Cartoon Network spoof commercial he could be beaten by a sponge...and not even an evil sponge. The New Adventures of the Wonder Twins play up their uselessness for Black Comedy.
- The original Wonder Duo, the powerless kid sidekicks Wendy and Marvin (and the Wonder Dog!) also get this often because of their perceived uselessness and unexplained presence (the powerless kids get to hang out with the all powerful grown up heroes, why exactly?). note In one comic, alternate versions of them show up as the kids of the villain known as Noah "The Calculator" Kuttler and befriend the Titans only to later get either mauled to death (Marvin) or severely injured (Wendy) by The Wonder Dog (or rather, a shape-shifting demonic dog owned by Ares), deconstructing their presence in a superhuman setting. Wendy at least managed to re-invent herself as the Handicapped Badass Proxy, Barbara Gordon/Oracle's associate and sort-of Junior Counterpart.
- The Super Friends versions of Hawkman and Hawkgirl are often mocked for having the ability to fly... on a team with an overfilled Flying Brick quota that already has that covered and then some. In a The Fairly OddParents! spoof, Veronica became the Hawkgirl parody "Hawkgal" who had "all the powers of a hawk and a gal!" And she was the the last to arrive at a fight each time because how slowly she flew in comparison to the others, and then had her butt handed to to her once she actually got there.
- The Legend of Korra: Mako, whose loserness is mostly played up by shippers who don't like him due to both his girlfriends breaking up with him then being in a relationship with each other. Even prior to that much of his hatedom portrayed him as a loser during Book 1 for being seen as a Jerkass cheater. Ironically many of these fanworks had Korra and Asami ditching him for each other, or Asami outright only using Mako as an excuse to get near to Korra (with the common joke being an amazing driver like her couldn't just bump into a boy accidentally like that). Back then Korra/Asami was a pure crackship.
- Pearl from Steven Universe became this around season 2, after it became clear that she had a somewhat obsessive crush on Rose. While the show itself depicts this as unhealthy and a tad selfish, fans tend to jokingly exaggerate it to Pearl being a pathetic loser and stereotypical "nice guy" who expects love in return for being decent but can never get it.
- Total Drama has no shortage of characters that the fandom views as complete losers, though these examples are completely justified. Ezekiel is the standout from the original cast for being the very first elimination both times he competed, Blaineley is the standout from the World Tour additions for being the Token Adult in a teenage cast and still getting eliminated just one episode after she joins, after cheating no less, and Leonard is the standout from later seasons for being completely useless at literally everything, having a very annoying voice, and getting eliminated in just the second episode both seasons he competed.
- Bill Dauterive from King of the Hill is treated as this both in-universe and out of universe. The man tolerates so much hardship throughout the series and can never catch a break, but for whatever reason he continues going on.
- Donald Duck, both in-universe and out. There is a reason why he's the current poster image of Born Unlucky.
Who gets stuck with all the bad luck?
No one but Donald Duck! - The protagonist of Caillou is a rather normal four year old boy who has his fair share of temper tantrums. Due to a Periphery Hatedom, Caillou is often portrayed as a whiny brat and a Butt-Monkey. This is especially common in Go Animate works.
- The Backyardigans: If there's any character from this show that people love to make fun of, it's Tyrone. Even the writers seem to hate him.
- Jean Grey from the 90s animated version of X-Men is mocked for being utterly useless. She constantly needs to be saved and she faints every time she does anything. The absurdity of it gets to the point where she loses to a power cord. It's often joked that Scott screams her name out of his frustratation with her instead of concern.
- Scooby-Doo gives us Scrappy-Doo. You know you’re a memetic loser when you have the “character hated by the fanbase” trope NAMED after you. This reputation mainly came from him being a Fearless Fool, causing more trouble for Scooby and Shaggy than he was worth, and being a failed Kid-Appeal Character who was so disliked that the following incarnations of the series have mostly pretended that he never existed in the first place. That is excluding the 2002 film, which brought him back as the villain (therefore, putting him in a role in which he’s meant to lose) solely to provide Catharsis Factor for the fans.
- Looney Tunes
- Daffy Duck, who is more or less the poster child for the Straw Loser trope due to his major Small Name, Big Ego Too Dumb to Live tendencies.
- Yosemite Sam for the unbelievable amount of Villain Decay he has undergone, making him The Chew Toy at this point. When you have this reputation among the Looney Tunes cast, you know you’re this.
- The Legend of Zelda’s incarnation of Link isn’t that bad if strictly compared to typical 80s cartoon heroes, but when compared to the several well-regarded video game incarnations of Link (and he is usually compared to the video game Links) he is definitely this. Fans tend to ignore any good qualities in favor of only remembering his annoying Catchphrase “Well, Excuse Me, Princess!” and his several failed attempts to get a kiss from Zelda. He is usually brought up as the prime example of why Link should always be a Silent Protagonist, claiming that this incarnation’s personality is proof that he should never speak again. He got a little redemption during his Guest Star appearance in Captain N: The Game Master where he was portrayed as more competent and finally got his kiss from Zelda, but sadly for him this appearance usually isn’t remembered by fans.
- Spongebob Squarepants:
- Squidward more or less has a reputation of constantly “losing” during episodes, to the degree of becoming a Cosmic Plaything almost every single time he shows up. Older episodes justified his defeats by making him the antagonist in those episodes. He would typically go out of his way to be a Jerkass to Spongebob in some way and then be a Small Name, Big Ego about it, making his hubris cause his own downfall in an Aesop. Later episodes, however, usually drop the part where he does something wrong and simply abuse him for Black Comedy. Fans started sympathizing with him for becoming such a Butt-Monkey and no longer deserving it, making his ultimate loser status far eclipse any antagonist status he once had. It’s for this exact reason that so many fans love the episode “Band Geeks”, in which the audience’s expectations are completely Subverted and Squidward actually wins in a Crowning Moment of Awesome. He has had some “wins” since then, but they tend to be minor and are FAR outnumbered by his losses.
- Plankton for almost the exact same reasons as Squidward, except for being much more along the lines of an actual villain by trying to Take Over the World, compared to Squidward who isn’t evil and is simply an antagonist at worst for disliking Spongebob. While Plankton still gets plenty of sympathy from the fandom for becoming much more of a harmless Butt-Monkey than actual threat in later seasons, he gets less of that sympathy than Squidward due to his motives still being worse. Plankton also lacks a memorable Throw the Dog a Bone episode like Squidward got, which combined with less sympathy probably makes him the bigger loser overall.
- The “MY LEG” guy was originally just part of background noises whenever a crowd of people ended up in pain. The reused sound clip was quickly picked up by the writers and became a Running Gag, and they started throwing in the line all of the time, even in situations that didn’t need such a dramatic response. Eventually the Memetic Mutation of the line’s frequent use led to it getting attached to a specific character, named Fred Rechid, who is now known as probably the biggest loser on the whole show, for seeming to only exist to have his leg broken over and over again in comical ways.

Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!Pokémon Examples on Memetic Loser are a complete mess (and there's one that seems to be a personal vendetta against one particular character).
I'll give my own thoughts on each:
- Twist: Noncombatant, doesn't have any achievements to have been ignored
- The professor: In-universe
- Ma-Ti: Could use more context, but counts
- Master Shake: Doesn't make clear if there's any exaggeration from the audience
- Zoidberg: Everything written there is in-universe
- Kyle: Is this exaggeration by the audience?
- Cartman: Again, is this any exaggeration?
- Kenny: What's written is in-universe
- Al Gore: This describes itself as in-universe
- Super Friends: The first bullet is a violation of Examples Are Not General
- Aquaman: Zero-context, referring to what I believe is an entry from under the Comic Books section. However, thanks to Pop-Cultural Osmosis, I do know he counts, if someone familiar with this incarnation could expand.
- Wonder Twins: The sponge parody makes me think at least Zan qualifies.
- Wonder Duo: This reads more like a write-up for The Scrappy.
- Hawkman and Hawkgirl: Needs more context on if they're competent in canon
- Mako: Both his girlfriends leaving him for each other definitely is the main thing I see whenever he comes up in discussions. The example could use more on his positive canon traits, however''
- Pearl: Seems to fit
- Total Drama: None of the examples are described as though anything about them is exaggerated, nor as though they have overshadowed qualities
- Bill Dauterive: Example proclaims him as an in-universe case
- Donald Duck: If anything, he has a reputation of never letting the bad luck get him down, at least in the parts of the fandom I frequent. Non-example.
- Caillou: Noncombatant, no accomplishments to overshadow, and comes from the Periphery Hatedom.
- Tyrone: Zero-context
- Jean Grey: Not an exaggeration, as far as I can tell.
- Scrappy: The hate toward him seems a bit more caustic than the treatment that defines a Memetic Loser
- Daffy: Animated Actors being in effect makes this hard for me to judge. His appearances when he ends up suffering are more well-known, but each work he's in should really be treated independently considering how varied the roles he's in are
- Yosemite Sam: I'm not sure this is an exaggeration, but he could fit on account of being mocked for having once been threatening and decaying from there.
- Squidward: Actually sympathized with, and his positive achievements are remembered. I'd say non-example.
- Plankton: I think he's actually mocked by the fandom, and his near-victories are not often brought up, so he could count, but the example would need rewritten by someone within the fandom.
- MY LEG guy: Does he even count as a character?

SoundCloudWith regards to the original post, I have to make my nigh-obligatory complaint about Characterization Tags as well.
(Also, keep in mind for some works, particularly Long-Runners, that the fandom and hatedom blend together a bit. Entries based off of older fans disliking a newer work/character/etc. should remain valid, but they should at least have more to them than "Jar Jar is bad.")
Edit: Also, being a combatant or fighter is not a requirement for Memetic Loser. The only requirement from the work itself is for the character to be somewhat good at their actual job/hobby, i.e. not a canonical "loser."
Edited by RallyBot2 on Feb 12th 2020 at 4:53:05 AM
Okay, if they don't actually have some sort of thing they're good at or don't really have a job or hobby, like Twist or Caillou, are they not examples?
Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!Correct, as they then don't satisfy the trope.
(Laconic is "A normally competent character's weaknesses are exaggerated in fanon, to the point where they become a walking punchline." I think that describes it well.)
Also, I noticed in the Other folder, that there seems to be real life examples. It mentions the staff at the sites Tumblr and Twitter, which would mean that it's troping people. Should I give those examples the cut?
Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!Still waiting on an opinion on this.
Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread! These do read like real-life examples.
MemeticLoser.Death Battle seems to list every character that's lost more than once across Death Battle, DBX, and One Minute Melee. Isn't this misuse, since it implies that every character who meets certain conditions can be added to the page, regardless of whether or not they actually inspire this reaction in the fanbase?
Edited by Zuxtron on Feb 13th 2020 at 3:26:01 PM
I mean, it's Death Battle; people over-react so much to what happens in that series that, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this entire list was just shoehorns people added after specific episodes.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessSo what do we do with the page? Burn it to the ground? I'd like to get more opinions and form a consensus first, since there might be some valid examples (I've seen people point out and mock the Power Rangers' losing streak).
I feel like I should mention it here as well, for when y'all start cleaning Memetic Mutation more heavily. I already proposed in the namespace thread moving example pages for Memetic Mutation from Memes/ to Memes From/. I feel like such a change would make it more clear what the subpage is supposed to be used for, at least. (In case you're unaware: The big complaint about the namespace is that people use it as though it were a medium namespace akin to VideoGame/.)
Look at all that shiny stuff ain't they pretty- Memetic Mutation:
- FOUR MILLION DOLLARS Explanation
- "And make the bad guys cry like an anime fan on prom night!" Explanation
- There are also snowclones of this line, such as "Make the bad guys cry like the Mighty No. 9 devs on launch night!"
- Do you like awesome things that are awesome? Explanation
- The Pizza Explosion. Explanation
- Dashing Explanation
- "Keiji Inafune is about to make you his bitch." Explanation
- Mediocre No. 5.6 Explanation
- "It's better than nothing." Explanation
- Similarly, Giant No. 2, or similar variants thereof, because you know...
- "He's a business man. Not a creator." Explanation
Pretty much all of these seem like hatedom memes.

Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!- Memetic Loser:
- Male Newmans in general due to comprising a paltry 3% of the player character population (as of 2017) and for being slightly inferior to their female counterparts in terms of T-ATK. Fans joke that they don't actually exist or that they're an endangered species, among other things.
- Hagito is seen as this, especially when he throws a tantrum over his plan failing.
- Many joked that Klotho became broke following his client order nerfs following the Episode 6 update.
Are entire groups or species allowed to be considered Memetic Losers?
Also, the second one is a ZCE. Don’t know about the third example though.
Edited by PlasmaPower on Feb 14th 2020 at 5:56:18 AM
Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!Only examples that look worth keeping are the Pizza Explosions, better than nothing and "And make the bad guys cry like an anime fan on prom night".
I assume species wouldn't count for Memetic x tropes in the way an entire species or group can't be The Scrappy.
I'm illiterate. Superman 64 has a better characters than The Last of Us Part II.- Memetic Loser: Dark Nebula, given its status as a disappointing and easy final boss, has been the punchline of many jokes among the fanbase, mainly those related with other villains. Not helped by the fact Nebula didn't receive a remix for Daroach's Guest Star in Star Allies, unlike all the other Dream Friends who use the final boss theme from their respective games, while Daroach gets simply a remix of Squeak Squad Attack.
This seems like complaining to me, considering he already has an Anti-Climax Boss entry, and the whole Star Allies thing makes up half the entry. It also doesn’t explain how the fans exaggerate his weakness.
I might rewrite this entry to explain what Dark Nebula is throughout the game and what he did versus when you actually fight him in the final boss.
EDIT: Here’s my rewrite, thoughts?
- Memetic Loser: After Dark Nebula’s fight, the game says he was an evil darkness sealed away a long time ago in a treasure chest, which Daroach and the Squeaks stole, believing it will give him ultimate power. However, he is regarded as a punchline in comparison to other Kirby bosses by quite a few fans, due to him being an Anti-Climax Boss.

- Meme name: description of meme and how it's used.
- Source of meme and fandom it relates to in the form of a note/labelnote.
- Famous instances (such as the Rick Roll during the Thanksgiving parade).
- Further mutations and successor memes, if any.

Is this example that was added to Doctor Who S38E9 "Ascension of the Cybermen" valid, considering it was added only 40 minutes after the episode finished?
- Memetic Mutation: Brendan became a meme more or less the second the episode finished, due to his scenes' apparent incongruity with the rest of the episode, with many viewers jokingly(?) professing to be more concerned with him than the regulars.
This started from a query I made on ATT, where I pointed out the misuse of Memetic Loser, being used to complain about characters, whenever they don’t fit the criteria for The Scrappy. Then it was pointed out that other Memetic YMMV such as Memetic Mutation also gets misused for hatedom memes.
This is my first time making a cleanup thread, so I don’t know what to expect. I guess I’ll start by posting the misused Memetic Loser entry I posted there.
YMMV.Sonic The Hedgehog 2020:
See, there’s little focus on the “Loser” part here and just being used to bash the older design of Sonic from the movie. Also dem Characterization Tags.
