Her paternal grandfather was a Coptic Christian of Egyptian descent. In 1972 she graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and began modeling for the Wilhelmina agency. Following this she worked for US Congressman Jack Kemp, then left D.C. to begin acting.

Tropes about Malick:
- Celebrity Voice Actor: Malick's distinctive voice has led to her having been a voice actor for almost as long as she has been an on-camera actor, from Batman Beyond in 1999 to The Owl House and Bojack Horseman.
- Friend to All Living Things: She's an animal rights activist and works to rehabilitate captured wild horses. In addition, she personally owns one cat, three dogs, and two horses, totaling six pets.
- Hidden Depths: When she first made the transition from modeling to acting in the 1990s, she was cast mainly for her appearance (as in Baywatch). After being cast in the sitcom Dream On, she displayed such a marked talent for comedy that the writers began to redraft scripts to accentuate it (which led to her CableACE nominations and wins). She later became a highly sought-after comedic actor.
- Irony: She rescues mustangs in real life, yet in Racing Stripes she played an abusive trainer of domestic horses.
- Many of her roles in general are witches, but it wasn't until 2020 that she played a witch with magic powers.
- Meet Cute: She met her husband while volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in Tijuana.
- Silver Vixen: She's retained her good looks even as she's gotten older.
