Main Characters

    Yohane
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character01_5.png
Voiced by: Aika Kobayashi

A young woman and aspiring singer from seaside Numazu City. Impulsive, defiant, talented, and most of all unlucky, Yohane has always dreamed of hitting the big time and turning her passion for singing into a career. However, after two years of failing to make it in Tokyo, she is forced to return to her childhood home on the night of her 16th birthday and face the music (in more ways than one). Despite the odds eternally stacked against her, Yohane never gives up and will do anything to make her dreams of stardom a reality.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Later forgotten after some episodes, but Yohane is (initially) brattier and more conceited compared to the original Yoshiko, who was nicer and friendlier from the start (despite her social ineptitude) and could be down-to-earth when she wasn't trapped in her "Fallen Angel" delusions. Learning to grow out of her old ways and coming to love her hometown factors heavily into her Character Development.
  • Adaptation Name Change: In the original Love Live! Sunshine!! series, "Yohane" is only a nickname that she insists on being called instead of her real name, Yoshiko. In this series, it seems that Yohane really is her name.
  • Daddy's Girl: The audio drama shows that as a child Yohane loved her father greatly, getting excited when he returns from his research trips but also upset when it seems he wouldn't make it for the Summer Festival as he promised.
  • Fortune Teller: Yohane attempts to try fortune-telling for a day job using a kit that her father bought for her that includes a Crystal Ball and headdress. She only gets one actual customer in the form of Riko for her first day, and out of four attempted predictions she only gets one of them half-right.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Is searching for the one thing that she enjoys and only she can do.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Subverted by her Character Development, but at first she's more cocky, antisocial and self-absorbed compared to the original Yoshiko who is a Nice Girl from the start, though she still does have a good heart under that attitude.
  • Magic Music: Yohane's staff's magic activates in tandem with a performance. It's also shown in Episode 3 that it resonates with people she's bonded with through song, as it gains additional emblems when she connects with others.
  • Magnetic Hero: Once Character Development is set, Yohane being a Nice Girl at heart also becomes more sociable, losing her self-absorbed and abrasive traits. She definitely gets that she's there to help others with kindness, and does have enough charisma to let somewhat withdrawn characters, like Mari and Riko, break out of their shell. It must be noticed though that, to begin with, it's also thanks to Hanamaru and Chika that Yohane herself stops hiding in her shell.
  • Nice Girl: Aside from her formerly slightly cocky, bitter and self-absorbed attitude, Yohane still is this, essentially. She becomes friendlier, and never turns down others in need - after all, there's still a reason why her fate is helping her town.
  • Power Glows: Yohane's Resonance kicking in is represented by a magical white aura enveloping Yohane and her allies.

    Lailaps
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character01_3.png
Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa

Yohane's family's pet wolf, who is left in her care after Yohane's parents leave for business for the summer. Although Yohane treats her as more of a little sister, she is often the more level-headed of the duo and prefers to serve as her master's voice of reason.

  • Big Friendly Dog: Lailaps is huge but also quiet and friendly.
  • Casting Gag: Yōko Hikasa was previously cast in Love Live! School Idol Festival ALL STARS and Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club as Kaoruko Mifune, the elder sister of Shioriko. Lailaps has the same eye colour as Kaoruko, a pink patch on her tail somewhat similar to Kaoruko's hair highlights, and also acts more like an elder sister despite Yohane considering her the younger sister (and they debate this at one point).
  • Talking Animal: Lailaps speaks to Yohane often and balances out Yohane's haughtiness and impulsive attitude. It is implied that only Yohane can hear her speak in a common tongue, but Mari acknowledges that she has been able to see the two of them communicate with each other.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's scared of bugs, any type of bugs actually. Yohane loves to get a rise out of her by mentioning bugs, which scares the pants off of her no matter the situation.

    Hanamaru
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character01_52.png
Voiced by: Kanako Takatsuki

Yohane's childhood friend and a pâtissier by trade who operates a bakery on the streets of Numazu. Hanamaru is a kind young girl who is always supportive of her friends no matter what situation they're in. She has always admired Yohane's talent for singing since she was a little girl.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed. In the original series, Hanamaru was still very much a Nice Girl, kind and sweet with most of the other girls but pretty sassy with Yoshiko in particular, serving as her straight man in the gag duo and treating her as more of a joke. This version of Hanamaru lacks such a relationship with Yohane, being friendly with her all around for the most part.
  • Nice Girl: A sweet and friendly girl, and the first one to befriend Yohane and help her meeting other friends as well.
  • Verbal Tic: Ends most of her sentences with "zura", inherited from her main counterpart.

    Ruby
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character01_65.png
Voiced by: Ai Furihata

A small magical fairy who supports her sister Dia's activities. Although she may seem timid, she has a surprisingly headstrong personality and won't back down, even if the going gets tough for both her and her sister.

  • Adaptation Species Change: In the original series she's an ordinary human, but in this series she's a fairy.
  • Equippable Ally: Ruby becomes this when she combines with Dia's Cool Bike.
  • Nice Girl: Sweet, supportive and meek like her Aqours counterpart.
  • Open Secret: The fact that she is a fairy and Dia's sister is well known in town despite her efforts to hide it.
  • Shrinking Violet: Like Aqours Ruby she's kinda shy and tends to hide behind her older sister.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Even more than the original Ruby of course, given that she's a very small fairy and extremely adorable.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: In episode 7, it's revealed that Ruby can take human form, appearing exactly like Aqours Ruby does. According to Dia, it's only because her power hasn't stabilized yet that she can't remain in human form for long. She does do it again in the next episode for the girls' musical performance.
  • Winged Humanoid: Being a fairy, she has a pair of large blue butterfly wings.

    Chika
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character01_4.png
Voiced by: Anju Inami

The youngest daughter of a family of innkeepers who run the Tochimann Inn in Numazu. Chika is a bright, personable face who will go to any lengths to help others no matter their plight.

    Riko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character01_42.png
Voiced by: Rikako Aida

A zoologist that came to Numazu to investigate the misfortune that has inflicted the local animals.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: This Riko doesn't have cynophobia this time around, and has a strong Cuteness Proximity towards unknown and rare animals.
  • Cuteness Proximity: As a zoologist, she's very interested in studying animals and new creatures. However, it devolves into a frenzy of wanting to closely study and monitor said creatures; such as Lailaps, Mari's familiar, and even Ruby.
  • Friendship Denial: Despite the fact that Riko along with Yohane and Mari were getting along, Riko refused to spend any further time with them and planned to leave Numazu as soon as possible. Since she was always moving towns as a child, Riko couldn't become close with anyone, and confided in researching animals after taking care of a lost dog.
  • Irony: In the main series, she is deeply afraid of dogs (even small ones) until she overcome her fear in season 2. Here, after taking care of a dog when little, she became a zoologist, and her reaction whenever she meets Lailaps is absolute glee.
  • Nice Girl: She's a kind and gentle girl just like her Aqours counterpart, and although she's somewhat melancholic and withdrawn she's a very pleasant individual to be around.

    You
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character01_40.png
Voiced by: Shuka Saito

A messenger girl in Numazu with an energetic and happy attitude.

  • Cuteness Proximity: When she meets Ruby for the first time.
  • Flying Postman: For mail deliveries further in Numazu, You will get fired from a magic cannon, then use special gear created by Kanan to fly towards her target.
  • Genki Girl: Very upbeat and energetic.
  • Nice Girl: Like her Aqours counterpart, she's kind, outgoing, cheerful and positive, and very much helps Yohane breaking out of her shell.

    Mari
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character01_7.png
Voiced by: Aina Suzuki

A reclusive demon queen who lives on Washima Island off the coast of Numazu. She tends to appear cold and distant, but in reality she fears being hated by others due to her nature as a demon. She is tended to by an army of cute familiars who help run her castle and keep her company.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: As far as personality goes, she has little to nothing in common with the original Mari. Instead of an outgoing and eccentric gadfly, she is a demure, lonely young woman that is afraid others will hate her and doesn't know how to deal with people who are friendly to her. This changes thanks to Yohane.
  • Adaptation Species Change: In the original series she's a human, but in this series she's a demon.
  • Hermit Guru: Before Yohane gets her to open up, she had this role. She isolated herself on Washima Island because she was afraid of how other people would react to her, but it's revealed she kept in correspondence with Dia, letting her know about potential dangers like weakened bridges that needed to be fixed. Yohane also goes to her for advice and knowledge at first.
  • Horned Humanoid: She has a pair of curly horns, which denotes her status as a demon.
  • Nice Girl: While more serious and withdrawn than the original Mari, she's quite quickly revealed to be a sweetheart who is just afraid of her nature as a demon and humans seeing her as different.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: With her personality adapting from the original incarnation, Mari has a much more stoic and cold demeanor, though she tends to show warmth to Yohane after each of the latter's compliments. Subverted as the series goes on, as it's shown her aloofness was due to her fear of being perceived as different by humans.

    Kanan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character01_2.png
Voiced by: Nanaka Suwa

A mechanic of a shop in the Uchira district, who makes a living making and repairing ships and other things based on materials salvaged from the ocean.

  • Adaptational Personality Change: Heavily downplayed, as both Yohane Kanan and Aqours Kanan are perfect Cool Big Sis Nice Girl examples, but here Kanan lacks the temporary bitterness in a friendship where they have come to an impasse.
  • Cool Big Sis: Likes to teach things to Yohane and the others, opening them to new perspectives, and is very kind and helpful.
  • Cuteness Proximity: When she meets Ruby for the first time.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Built a person-sized talking robot out of garbage found in the sea.
  • Nice Girl: Still the typically sweet and accommodating girl who likes to help others, and is kind of a role model to them.
  • Wrench Wench: Appears to be an intentional example. Kanan holds the wrench within the first few seconds of her introduction, then she plays to some of the stereotypes expected from the "classic" examples like Gadget Hackwrench, notably the ability to make or fix things using random discarded material.

    Dia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character01_6.png
Voiced by: Arisa Komiya

The chief-of-state for Numazu. A responsible young lady who seeks to aid the town in light of the mysterious noises plaguing it.

  • Adaptational Badass: While is original Dia is the Student Council President of Uranohoshi and one of the three founders of Aqours, this Dia is the head honcho of Numazu with a sword-swinging Badass Biker alter ego.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Dia confirms to Mari in an audio drama that she is a fairy as well, just like Ruby.
  • Badass Biker: Her alter ego, Scarlet Delta, is a masked motorcycle rider who wields a katana to fight evil.
  • Cool Bike: As Scarlet Delta, Dia is armed with a striking red futuristic motorcycle that allows her to move around at much greater speed and agility than would be possible for her on foot. Her sister Ruby also has the ability to combine with it, allowing Ruby to control the vehicle and giving its color and powers a huge kickstart.
  • High-Class Glass: She's the chief-of-state for Numazu, and she wears a monocle to denote her status.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Her "Scarlet Delta" identity comes with a katana. She can fire lightning strikes by slashing with it, which are capable of dispelling black miasma.
  • Nice Girl: She's serious and professional but kind and friendly from the start, more than the original Dia.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She's quite friendly overall, and is more open to show concern for others than the original Dia was initially.
  • Red Is Heroic: Much like the original Dia, her image color is red, and she is dedicated to keeping Numazu in tip-top shape. She also moonlights as Scarlet Delta, a masked hero decked out in scarlet red who protects Numazu from the black miasma phenomenon.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Matcha-flavored sweets and Numazu tea are her favorite. During the festival in episode 8, she gets excited at the chance to have them from the various stalls.

Others/Supporting Characters

    Kohaku
Voiced by: M·A·O (Japanese)

Dia's assistant at Numazu's administrative office. She's known Dia and Ruby since they were very young.

    Yohane's Mother
Voiced by: Hekiru Shiina (Japanese)

Yohane's mother, apparently a scholar who travels often. She departs on one such trip in the very first episode, leaving Yohane to mind the house once she comes home.

  • Hands-Off Parenting: Downplayed. She allows Yohane to head to the city in search of fame at the age of fourteen, though they do keep in contact, and she's the one giving Yohane her living expenses/spending money. She and Yohane's dad are also gone on their travels by the time Yohane comes home to Numazu, but she knew Lailaps was there to keep her daughter company.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: As in Sunshine!!, she looks very much like an older version of Yohane.

    Shishinoshin
Voiced by: Masaaki Yano (Japanese)

Hanamaru's pet/mount/draft animal for her cart.

  • Dire Beast: Possibly. As he's a "boar-like beast" with horns in addition to tusks (as opposed to an actual boar), it's not known whether his species is supposed to be that large.

    Shima
Voiced by: Kana Asumi (Japanese)

Chika's eldest sister. Like her sisters, she helps run the family's inn.

  • Adaptational Badass: Is a member of the Million Dollar team with her sisters.
  • Tareme Eyes
  • Team Mom: Downplayed compared to Sunshine!!; most characters' personalities seem to carry over unless shown otherwise, but because the sisters' mother appears right at the family's introduction, she doesn't have to actively play the role.

    Mito
Voiced by: Kanae Itō (Japanese)

Chika's other older sister, and the middle child of the family.

    Chika's Mother
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (Japanese)

The mother of Chika and her sisters, and owner of Tochiman Inn.

    Shiitake
Voiced by: Anna Mugiho (Japanese)

The Tochiman Inn's pet dog and mascot.

  • Big Friendly Dog
  • Demoted to Extra: With Chika no longer being the main character, and Riko no longer having a fear of dogs to milk comedy from, Shiitake's lost a lot of screentime.

    Tsuki
Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa (Japanese)

Still You's cousin, who works as a photographer in Numazu.

    Tonosama
Voiced by: Nobuo Tobita (Japanese)

An autonomous robot built by Kanan from salvaged parts.

  • Kabuki Sounds: Tonosama is often accompanied by these whenever he speaks in his noticeably theater-like expression.
  • Robot Buddy: Helps Kanan with her salvage and repair work, often doing the heavy lifting.

    Pellapie
Voiced by: Aina Suzuki (Japanese)

Mari's main familiar, who keeps her company in her castle and sometimes serves as her messenger.

    Lew, Setsu, and Rahn

A trio of kids (two boys and a girl) who live in Yohane's neighborhood, and often bump into her during her work.

  • Junior Counterpart: In terms of their roles in the story, they're essentially replacements for Yoshimi, Itsuki, and Mutsu, acquaintances of the main character who aren't part of the group, but can help to trigger or advance plot.
  • Mouthy Kid: Lew (the brown-haired boy) is never shy about complaining or making fun of Yohane.

    Mari's Father
Voiced by: Akio Ōtsuka (Japanese)

Mari's father, a demon king. His current whereabouts are not known, as he's only been seen in a flashback.

  • Horned Humanoid: Like his daughter, though his horns are huge in comparison.
  • Unseen No More: Audio version. He's still The Faceless, despite men appearing in this series with no issue, but this time he finally gets spoken lines.

    Yohane's father
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese)

Yohane's father, a traveling scholar outside of Numazu. In the first season of the anime he is currently on a trip with his wife. He made his debut in an audio drama released on the official Love Live channel.

  • Actor Allusion: Has the same goofy reactions to events (such as his freak out when he first sees Lailaps) as Joseph Joestar or Gintoki Sakata, who Sugita previously voiced.
  • Insistent Terminology: He tells Yohane that he isn't just a traveling scholar but rather an adventurer.
  • Unseen No More: Audio version. He's absent in the main series and only mentioned in the anime, but he makes his apperance in a tie-in audio drama from Yohane's childhood.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: His work abroad means he tends to be away from his family, usually maintaining a daily phone call with his wife and daughter.
