Students

Asahi Kuromine

Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae

The series' protagonist, an earnest but clumsy Ordinary High-School Student. Nicknamed "Anazaru" (literally the "leaky sieve"), this man cannot lie to save his life. So of course, he finds himself having to keep the secrets of a whole bunch of people throughout the story. He has a crush on Youko.

• Accidental Pervert: Played with. The rare times he is involved in perverted antics, it's accidental on his part, but Shiho totally does it on purpose.
• Cannot Keep a Secret: His facial expressions will give away whatever he's hiding if you apply the slightest pressure, and people find it easy to learn his secrets. He gets better at it over the course of the story, presumably because he's very emotionally invested in protecting his friends (and especially Youko).
• Characterization Marches On:
  • While it is part of the premise, his "unable to lie" shtick is mostly in effect in the early volumes. Afterwards, it does pop up occasionally, but Asahi's comedic role becomes more focused on being the Only Sane Man. This character trait makes a subdued comeback much later (around chapter 130), but without as much focus as early on.
  • Also, he's called an idiot quite often and implied to be a little Book Dumb in the early chapters, but not so much later on.
• Childhood Friends: With Mikan. As he puts it, "she's the perpetrator, he's the victim".
• The Confidant: Encouraged by his experience with Youko, and pushed by Akane, he takes on this role for all the supernatural beings in the school in chapter 111. With a costume too.
• Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Shinji from How to Make an Invisible Man and Kousuke from Sakura Discord were abrasive, grumpy, and (initially) slightly cynical protagonists. Asahi is (too) honest, a bit shy, clumsy and kind to a fault.
• Covert Pervert: Downplayed, but for all his earnestness, he's not above having a few not-so-innocent thoughts once in a while. And much less downplayed, he's far from immune to Shiho's body. In Chapter 87 after he and Youko have become a couple, he's coerced into admitting that his thoughts about Youko haven't all been "pure and clean". And indeed, a few scenes throughout Part 2 remind us that his attraction to Youko is, of course, emotional, but also physical.
• Critical Existence Failure: In chapter 54, he gets in a high-intensity snowball fight where he has to fend off about a dozen Akanes with nothing but a shovel, near the summit of a mountain. As soon as he and Youko get to safety in the next chapter he passes out because he was hypothermic and only running on adrenaline at that point.
• The Determinator: He has repeatedly harmed and/or humiliated himself, for the sake of keeping the main cast's secrets; and Youko's constant pleas not to strain himself too hard only fire him up even more.
• Everyone Can See It: For several months, he was the only one seriously thinking that his crush on Youko was a secret to anyone. Even she noticed he was staring at her before he first sees her vampire traits, though she was worried he was catching onto her being a vampire (this proves to be a consistent problem with Youko).
  • Before that, he had a crush on Nagisa, but she preemptively rejected him, having herself guessed that he liked her.
  • It is implied that his transparent crushes are nothing new by the time the series starts, although with a slight twist (see First Love below).
• Extreme Doormat: A lot of his problems happen because he's rarely willing to stand up for himself, and his few moments of initiative typically only happen when his friends encourage him or he's helping someone else.
• First Love: Played interestingly − Oka and Mikan note that Youko is probably the first girl Asahi genuinely falls in love with, instead of just shallowly admiring her. Which ironically happened because he first friend-zoned himself instead of confessing to Youko right away. That gave him the time to know the real her and all the sides of her personality.
• Generation Xerox: A flashback/dream in Chapter 183 shows that Asahi looks a lot like his father did when he was younger; he also inherited his Nice Guy personality from Dad, who encouraged him and Mei to "do everything you can for the ones you hold dear".
• Goofy Suit: In chapter 111, Akane introduces him to his new counselling job for supernatural beings at the school, and of course there's a uniform going with the job: a tie, a cape, underpants with braces, and a helmet. And that's literally it. It must be seen to be believed.
• I'm a Man; I Can't Help It: Gives this excuse when Nagisa catches him taking an overly insistent peek at Youko's cleavage in chapter 8.
• Innocently Insensitive: Played for laughhs in chapter 146, when he and Mikan meet Oka (who's revealed in the same chapter to hear people's thoughts) for the first time. After Mikan talked to Oka rather rudely, Asahi tries to smooth things up… and fails miserably, only adding to the insult.
  Mikan: I can't stand your face, gloomy glasses. Go play somewhere else, will ya? Shoo, shoo!
  Oka: How about you get some tact?!
  Asahi: Mikan! Gloomy glasses is a bit too… Well, it does describe him somewhat… I mean, you can't say that!
  Oka: You're doing it wrong!
• Interrupted Declaration of Love: Happens once before the story, when Nagisa rejected him before he confessed; a second time in the first chapter when he finds out that Youko is a vampire and thus cannot bring himself to confess right away; and a third time in chapter 47, when Youko pulls it as an escape maneuver just as Asahi is about to spit it out. In chapter 85, he finally pulls it off.
• In-Universe Nickname: Aside from the aforementioned "Anazaru", a Running Gag has people calling him various nicknames in "mine" depending on the situation. He's most often called "Eromine" (mostly by Youko) whenever he is accused of having perverted thoughts - whether it's true or not. Akane then invented "Hiyamine" (translated "Icecreamine") whenever Nagisa plants ice cream into his eyes. Then in chapter 83 he becomes "Gesumine" ("Scumine") when rumors of him being a philanderer spread around the school, and in chapter 85 Youko calls him "Ahomine" ("Dummymine"). Then in chapter 128, Shiho coins "Coffeemine", as he "spouts blood like an old coffee pot" whenever she presses her chest against his back.
• Keeping Secrets Sucks: A large source of comedy in the series involves this.
• Loving a Shadow: Asahi tends to admire girls who are more capable than he is and then he thinks that he loves them. It's part of why he's able to move on so easily once he's rejected. With Youko, while he initially was attracted to the cool and refined image she portrayed, he fell much more deeply for her real, cheerful and energetic self. They turned out to fit together quite well.
• Made Myself Sad: When Shirou thinks that he and Youko are a couple in chapter 11, Asahi hurriedly says that he and Youko are Just Friends… and suddenly feels very sad. Then Youko confirms it insistently and repeatedly, which physically hurts Asahi.
• Manic Pixie Dream Girl: A rare gender-inverted example: him learning Youko's secret and spending time with her taught her how to relax, enjoy school life, and make friends.
• Muggle: He's the only member of the main cast who is a completely normal human (with Mikan, if you don't count the God of Fortune residing in her glasses).
• My Sister Is Off-Limits: Although he pretends he doesn't care, he's clearly less than enthused when an ambiguous line from Sen makes him think he and Mei are going out.
• Nice Guy: His pure earnestness is possibly his defining trait (even more so than his "bag of open holes" trait). His friends have remarked that the upside of of his inability to lie is that you know he's honest and genuine.
• Nose Bleed: Happens on a regular basis, especially when Shiho is around. And it's usually lampshaded. It's frequent enough that other people start to use it as some kind of measure instrument after a while. According to Rin, 50 years in the future Asahi is in danger of dying from blood loss because of the Charismatic Pervert II's rule, to his young self's horror.
• Not What It Looks Like: Poor Asahi gets it pretty bad, especially because he's usually trying to be noble or selfless at the time. Example: In Chapter 66/Episode 4, Mikan finds the miniature Nagisa and, thinking it's a doll, starts to strip her. Asahi quickly asks to see the "doll" to try and preserve Nagisa's dignity; unfortunately, since he asked immediately after Mikan remarked on the removable clothing, everyone assumes he just wants to strip her himself — even Youko and Nagisa herself.
• Official Couple: He becomes Youko's boyfriend at the end of part 1.
• Only Sane Man: Well, "least insane man" would be more accurate considering the bunch that surrounds him. He's at least prone to lampshade the absurdity of the situations or of the others' reactions to them.
• Opposites Attract: Subverted, Asahi initially rationalizes his interest Youko as this due to her being reserved and mysterious to everyone. When he actually gets to know her however, he remains just as in love with her when as it gets more and more obvious they're actually pretty alike.
• Secret-Keeper: To Youko, obviously, then to Nagisa and Shiho, as well as the other non-human students who come to him for councelling from chapter 110 on.
• Split Personality: Not the case, but the girls seem to consider "Eromine" as this. He even has a "presence" that can be felt from far away apparently.
• Stating the Simple Solution: He voices that Youko probably already tried a parasol or sunblock to solve her tanning problem. She hadn't; she'd never even heard of sunblock.
• Straight Man: He's this to pretty much everybody else. The only character who can out-straightman him is his own sister.
• Stripperriffic: His "Kurominen" "costume" consists of nothing but underwear, suspenders, a necktie, a cape, and a helmet.
• Thanks for the Mammaries: An unusual example in chapter 22, as his hand is first touching Shirou's chest… but he sees a picture of the moon and turns back into Shiho, making this trope happen.
  • Another subversion in chapter 150: Asahi trips and accidentally grabs Mikan's breast… who, instead of being shocked, gleefully asks what he's apologizing for to embarrass him further.
• This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: Asahi's biggest non-comedic flaw is that he tries to carry all his burdens single-handedly, never asking for help and often running himself ragged in the process, which he dismisses by acting like his problems aren't nearly as important as everyone else's. Youko chews him out for this attitude several times throughout the series; In Chapter 183 he passes out from overexerting himself and wakes up in the infirmary with Shiho; when he says "Don't worry about me!", she changes into Shiro and headbutts Asahi, saying that Youko specifically told Shiro to smack him if he said something like that.
• Time-Travel Tense Trouble: After his trip to the future with Mikan, Asahi reminisces what happened "the other day in the future"… before noting that that phrase doesn't make sense.
• Tsundere: Very much towards his sister. Chapter 134 shows that he clearly cares for her more than he'd like to admit. It goes both ways, incidentally.
• Unlucky Everydude: He frequently finds himself in wacky, madcap situations, particularly related to the supernatural.

Youko Shiragami

Voiced by: Yuu Serizawa

A cool, aloof beauty... at least, that's the impression Asahi initially has of her. Turns out she's a cheerful and not particularly bright vampire girl, who inadvertently lets Asahi see her bat wings one day. She has promised her father that she would leave school should her secret be revealed, so Asahi promises her that he won't reveal her secret no matter what.

• Absurdly Youthful Mother: Due to unintentionally impregnating herself by drinking Asahi's blood, she gives birth to a daughter nine months after graduating from high school.
• Big Eater: If the constant growling of her stomach in any indication, she isn't sated easily. At first it's justified by the fact she can't each lunch at noon because people could see her fangs, but chapter 138 makes it clear that she can eat a lot (see Obsessed with Food)
• Bizarre Alien Reproduction: Akane mentions that female vampires can — or at least could — get pregnant just by drinking blood. Youko discovers it's true when she accidentally impregnates herself with Asahi's daughter through drinking his blood.
• Blood Lust: When she and Asahi are eating lunch together in chapter 101, her eyes start to fixate rather hungrily on Asahi's neck. It turns out it's part of her awakening as a vampire, and she needs to drink Asahi's blood frequently to not lose control. Though, in this case the "lust" part is quite a bit more literal since blood drinking is practically the same as nookie for vampires.
• Book Dumb: Inverted. She's a complete moron most of the time but seems perfectly fine in studies.
• Buxom Beauty Standard: Subverted in her case, contrary to Shiho. She's quite stacked and leaves her cleavage open, yet people rarely notice.
• Cannot Tell a Lie: She isn't any more competent than Asahi in this domain.
• Character Tics:
  • She has a habit of putting her hand in front of her mouth when she speaks. It's normally to hide her teeth, but she seems to do it unconsciously even when she doesn't need to.
  • When she's nervous or surprised, she puts her hands in a fighting stance and says "Shaaaa!", kind of like Dale Gribble.
• Characterization Marches On: Her growling stomach Running Gag wasn't quite as present in earlier chapters. Also, it seems her personality followed her Art Evolution: in earlier chapters she appeared a tad less stupid — a tad — and also had a more sarcastic side notably visible in chapter 6 (the "stoicism competition" with Asahi) or chapter 16 (where she teases Akane to hell about her Immortal Immaturity). That side didn't completely disappear but became somewhat less prominent.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: Despite her insistence that she's Just Friends with Asahi, she gets rather irritated by Shiho's fairly aggressive teasing of him. So much so that she pulls out a picture of the moon, which was enough to transform her back into Shirou.
• Cordon Bleugh Chef: She can cook regular food just fine. Problem is, sometimes she gets too fired up in making something and results in disaster.
• Cute Little Fangs: Even though she tries to hide her canines, they are usually played as this.
• Cuteness Proximity: She has a thing for small people apparently. She squees the first time she sees the mini-Nagisa (and a mini-Akane in chapter 88) and runs to pat Akane's head when she first sees her. She also finds bats very cute.
• Dhampyr: Human mother, vampire father. Compared to her full-blooded vampire father, she can pass as a normal human.
• The Ditz: How exactly she managed to keep her secret this long with her brain capacity is a miracle in itself.
• Entertainingly Wrong: She noticed Asahi was staring at her before he ends up seeing her vampire traits and pledges to keep it secret...and so she was worried he might have been noticing that she was a vampire beforehand, though this mistake proves to be consistent characterization on her part.
• Everyone Has Standards: When Nagisa is getting ready to confess to Kuromine, she takes the adage "love is a battlefield" too far and dresses up as samurai wife, complete with naginata; Youko approves. When Shiho says that she's likely to scare Kuromine, Nagisa changes into camouflage fatigues with a Sniper Rifle; again, Youko approves. But when Shiho says she needs to look cute and Nagisa puts on a theme park mascot-style cat costume, Youko shouts "Even I can't agree with that one!"
• Femininity Failure: Or rather "Sexiness Failure" - she's apparently so unsexy that Rin can't feel any pervertedness from her even with a generous cleavage.
• First-Name Basis: As the story goes on, she starts to unconsciously call Asahi by his first name with increasing frequency. By chapter 58, it has become permanent. She also switches to first-name with Nagisa in chapter 50, and Akari in chapter 57 (much to the latter's dismay). And she calls Akane and Karen by their first name, despite being aware of their nature, showing that she doesn't care much about status or hierarchy.
• Friendly Neighbourhood Vampire: Very down-to-earth and friendly despite being a vampire.
• Future Badass: Of a sort. It turns out that she's the Charismatic Pervert II who caused Rin's Bad Future...except it's not at all intentional.
• Genki Girl: Tends to work herself up a tad too easily over trivialities, especially when food is involved.
• Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Played with. Going by chapter 87, she may or may not have a bat plushie named "Asahi-kun". She loudly denies it, but considering Akane's powers, it might very well be true.
• Hellish Pupils: Happens very briefly when her eyes are drawn to Asahi's tasty-looking neck in chapter 101. And again, for a single panel, in chapter 114. In chapter 131, they're finally shown in their full, terrifying glory, when Youko bites Asahi's neck for the first time.
  • However, in this 'verse drinking another's blood holds a very different, and deeply intimate, meaning.
• History Repeats: A lot of the aspects of her relationship with Asahi mirror the relationship between her own parents. Tragically, this includes the part where, just like her father, her vampire powers went out of control; the time-traveling characters like Rin and "Box Girl" Nagisa are trying to prevent this.
• Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Chapter 144 reveals this as another one of her "talents". She has a "peculiar singing style", indeed.
• Hot Teacher: She goes for this look on chapter 117's cover. A very convincing pose… except for the fact she's holding her book upside down. Nice try, Youko, nice try.
• Ice Queen: The initial impression of Shiragami. She's actually the complete opposite. Ironically, Shiragami herself aspires to be this.
• I Just Want to Be Normal: Chapter 187 shows that for most of her life, she hated her vampire side and just wanted to be a regular human being, including yelling at her father about it in the past (though she immediately realized what she'd said and apologized to him). By the end of the chapter, she thanks Asahi for teaching her to love herself for who she really is...and then unfurls her wings in front of her classmates and flies out the window to save a falling Principal Shirayuki.
• Inappropriate Hunger: Her stomach has a habit of choosing the worst moments to be noisy...
• Insecure Love Interest: One reason it takes her so long to admit her own feelings is that she's pretty sure Asahi could never love her that way, both because of the trouble she causes him and simply because she's a vampire. Hence why Asahi's near-confession in chapter 48 throws her into a panic. Even after they effectively hook up, Akane has to tell her to stop worrying about whether she's good enough for him.
• Internal Reveal: In Chapter 182, she finally learns that Ryokuenzaka-sensei is her father Genjirou in disguise; in the very next chapter, after Asahi collapses due to exhaustion, she demands that Shiho tell her everything and thus finally gets clued into things like her disappearance in the Bad Future and the fact that she's more than likely Rin's grandmother.
  • In Chapter 187, she willingly outs herself as a vampire in front of her classmates so she can save Shirayuki from falling to death.
• In-Universe Nickname: Akane either calls her "Ponkotsu" ("piece of junk") or "Cool beauty (laugh)". And yes, the "(laugh)" is always included.
• Little Bit Beastly: As a volume 5 omake (and later chapter 85) reveals, she can transform into a bat… which means that two bat ears sprout at the top of her head, without any other change. Asahi finds this incredibly cute.
• Love Epiphany: Finally admits her own feelings in chapter 71, encouraged by both Akane and Nagisa, after having kissed Asahi out-of-nowhere at the amusement park.
• Nice Girl: Case in point: Youko was going on a trip out of town to get a burger that was made in limited quantities per day. Along the way she runs into the rest of the cast...including FIFTY AKANES. However, while Akane got sidetracked to a lingerie shop, Youko still bought burgers for everyone who couldn't quite make it, including Akane who was trying to screw over everyone.
• Nightmare Fetishist: She sure is enthusiastic in trying out Mikan's new Russian Chou. In fact, she's started to help in developing them.
• Oblivious to Love: Kind of subverted. She thinks she's sharp when it comes to love, but always gets it wrong. Even when Asahi confesses to her, he has to drill it into her brain for several pages to be sure she gets the message.
• Obsessed with Food: You could say that her stomach often answers in her place. Asahi is often the one poking fun at her when this happens. In chapter 138, the one thing she wants to accomplish before graduating from high school is… eating up all 24 dishes of the school restaurant. Mikan and Nagisa end up "helping" her in the task, but it's implied she still eats more than half of the dishes by herself. Her reward for her troubles is a horrible stomachache.
• Official Couple: FINALLY manages to spit it out to Asahi in chapter 86, in what serves as a climax for the first part of the story.
• Proper Tights With Skirt: Her usual outfit at school… strangely combined with an open cleavage, showing her awkward grasp of the concept of sexiness. In casual outfit, however, she often wears thigh-high boots with a Zettai Ryouiki.
• Selective Obliviousness: Youko isn’t QUITE as dense as she looks. She just doesn’t want to think too much about the relationship between Asahi, Nagisa and herself.
• Shipper on Deck: A fervent supporter of Asahi and Nagisa... not realizing that she is the one Asahi loves.
  • In the second part of the series, she puts just as much effort into trying to help Sakurada pursue his crush on Akari-sensei.
• Small Name, Big Ego: Sadly for her, she's not nearly as talented, sexy or clever as she thinks she is, but people around her (especially Asahi) often find it hard to tell her the truth. She's pretty sensitive about it too.
• Super Gullible: She's not only as bad at lying as Asahi is, but also significantly dimmer and more prone to believing terrible lies as well. Probably not the best combination ever.
• The Idiot from Osaka: Youko speaks in a kansai-ben accent when she doesn't need to hide her fangs, and while she has plenty of book smarts, she's a total ditz.
• Unknowingly in Love: Actually tries to set Asahi up with someone else...then she sees them on a date and feels her chest tightening, which she brushes off as her reaction to the shrine they're at.
• Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her future self is the Charismatic Pervert II responsible for the Bad Future, but it's completely unintentional; when her vampire powers got stronger, that included a Charm Person power that caused the perverts to flock to her make her their leader.
• Verbal Tic: In Japanese she has a habit of using the particle "shi" for emphasis, which is quite unusual (it normally indicates a reason).
• Weakened by the Light: Comically subverted. Much of her behavior in the first chapter seems to suggest this (she arrives at school really early, leaves late, and sits out during P.E class). Turns out the actual reason for this is because she tans real easily.
• What Is This Feeling?: Youko doesn’t seem to get that she likes Asahi, thinking a bout of jealousy is a shrine making her sick.
• Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Downplayed: While the pervert-dominated Bad Future isn't "evil" per se, it was caused by the misfortune of her vampire powers going out of control, which also forced her into hiding and kept her from seeing her friends or loved ones for fifty-odd years.

Mikan Akemi

Voiced by: Reina Ueda

Asahi's childhood friend, Mikan is a feared scoop-hunter who will not let any secret unrevealed, and also happens to have a crush on her favorite victim. She has two little brothers that she often takes care of alone, and can be a bit of a miser, as her house not very wealthy.

• Big Sister Instinct: She's often seen taking care of her little brothers early on. Later, she acts as a Cool Big Sis figure to Rin when she discovers Rin's identity. She also helps Asahi take care of his daughter in the Bad Future as her surrogate mother.
• Brutal Honesty: Depending on the case, she can act like a jerk to hide her own feelings or simply tell people what she thinks very bluntly. But the former trait progressively recedes with her Character Development, leaving a girl that won't chew her words to make her point.
• Camera Fiend: At first, but this trait more or less disappears at the same time as her "Evil Queen" character.
• Card-Carrying Villain: Declares to be this, but she is actually a pretty nice girl deep down.
• Character Development: She starts out as a Card-Carrying Villain, embarrassing people for shits and giggles, but after her crush for Asahi is revealed in chapter 9, this is somewhat toned down. Then after chapter 42 and her rejected confession, she starts to act more nicely (with a broad definition of "nice"), and also more seductively towards Asahi.
• Childhood Friend: With Asahi, and she turns out to have a crush on him from the start.
• Companion Cube: She doesn't really need glasses, but constantly keeps them on because Asahi gave them to her in a summer festival. Before they start talking, awaken magical powers, and then fly off, carried away by a pigeon. In case you hadn't noticed what kind of series you were reading.
• Destination Defenestration: Her method of choice for getting rid of people who annoy her. Particularly Shimada, Okada, and Sakurada.
• The Determinator: We're talking about a girl who still hasn't given up on Asahi after 50 years and goes back in time to give advice to her past self.
• Eviler than Thou: In chapter 182, she confronts two reporters working for an occult magazine, who are trying to uncover the seven mysteries of the school, and teaches them how the "evil reporter" thing is done. She's thoroughly researched both of them, encourages the girl to confess her love to the guy knowing that she'll be rejected, and proceeds to crush the guy's balls by making the girl slip (by the operation of a God of Fortune). They learn their lesson pretty quickly.
• First-Name Basis: With Asahi, obviously, being her childhood friend. She also briefly goes on first-name basis with Nagisa in chapter 135… for about 3 pages, before they become "enemies" again.
• For the Evulz: A lot of what she does in the early chapters.
• The Glasses Gotta Go: She usually removes them when she gets on the offensive with Asahi. She's seen more and more often without them as the story goes on, maybe symbolizing the fact that she's more honest with herself and no longer feels the need to wear a "mask". Either that, or she's just increasingly tired of Fuku-chan's crap.
• Hidden Heart of Gold: Mikan likes to emotionally hurt people as best she can, including lying about what they’re doing and ferreting out all their secrets. Or at least, that’s what she wants people to think. She only posts fake stories in her newspaper along with big warnings that she’s making everything up. For real stories she won’t use whatever material she has without permission.
• I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: She initially messes with Asahi to keep her current relationship stable, as she’s not comfortable with stepping out of the childhood friend niche. However, when it becomes clear that she has to do something and make a move, she does it instantly and stops tormenting him for the most part.
• Invisible Parents: While Youko's parents are regular characters and we saw at least a glimpse of the other main characters' parents, Mikan's are never seen. It's unclear whether she even lives with them.
• I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In chapter 182 she internally lets go of Asahi by protecting Youko's secret and promising that she's definitely not helping them to stay together or anything.
• Locked Out of the Loop: She doesn't know about most of the casts' secrets, other than Rin. This changes in chapter 126, where she learns both Shiho and Nagisa's secrets.
• Love Confession: Gives one to Asahi after a slip of the tongue from Rin makes them believe that they have married in that future. He tells her he loves Shiragami, but also that he sometimes finds her cute, much to her embarrassment.
• Malicious Misnaming: She renamed her God of Fortune Fuku-chan "God of Misfortune", for obvious reasons.
• Only Sane Man: After a while she kind of switches places with Akari in that role. Well, occasionally.
• Paparazzi: Will not let you have a secret, or any kind of intimacy if she has set her eyes upon you. Why? Because! This trait fades away as the story progresses though.
• Parental Substitute: She pretty much acts as Rin's guardian in the present, and maybe even in the future. She's also implied to take care of her two little brothers alone.
• Patient Childhood Love Interest: She has had feelings for Asahi since childhood, but deliberately kept a Vitriolic Best Buds kind of relationship with him. After their trip to the future and her rejected confession though, she starts to actively go after him and has no intention of giving up, even knowing that he likes Youko.
• Screwball Serum: Although she's usually a normal chef, her chou a la creme is incredibly lethal and induces strange effects on people.
• Took a Level in Kindness: After her glasses start to talk (don't ask), she has started to act in a much less jerkish manner. Which doesn't mean she has become all love and sugar, only that she has gone from full-on Jerkass to simply snarky and aggressively determined.

Nagisa Aizawa

The hyper-strict, hyper-competent and hyper-dutiful class representative. Asahi used to have a crush on her but he was so obvious she rejected him before he even confessed. Oh, and she's also a 16cm tall alien on a mission to observe humans.

• Abnormal Ammo: Her sleep induction device, which, as Asahi notes, is actually pretty useless in a real fight. Her miniature self uses a rifle that shoots… marbles or something?
• A-Cup Angst: Downplayed. She doesn't mention it often but Youko's bust does make her a bit jealous. In chapter 75, when told to act "normally" she wears obvious breast pads.
• Attack Drones: In Chapter 161, she busts out a set that look like Hitodama Lights but function like funnels from the Gundam franchise.
• Character Development: As mentioned above, hanging out with Asahi and Youko made her much friendlier, and also much less stoic.
• Class Representative: She is known for being very stubborn and straitlaced, though she relaxes a little into the story once she's made friends with Youko and Asahi.
• The Comically Serious: Often takes things seriously, even in the middle of outrageous situations.
• Corporal Punishment: If her secret is exposed, not only will she get court-martialed on her home planet, but she'll also receive a public spanking as extra.
• Covert Pervert: Invoked in chapter 67, when she's locked alone with Asahi after Akane made her human-sized. With her antenna glowing quite intensely (which normally indicates courting), she wonders if she's actually more perverted than she wants to admit. Also, in chapter 96 she doesn't exactly dislike the thrill of the "kabedon" (cornering someone against a wall with your arms).
• Double Entendre: Her declaration of love to Youko when she's stuck with the feather of Lust is full of this.
  Nagisa: Let's do some nighttime training together! I can show you plenty of techniques!
• Expressive Accessory: A weird variant, as her external unit somehow moves exactly like her even when she's not inside to control it.
• Full-Name Basis: Calls everyone of her age by their full name (except Okada, Shimada and Sakurada), no matter the circumstances. Youko becomes the only exception in chapter 50, as they go on mutual First-Name Basis −she calls her "Youko-kun" while Youko calls her "Nagisa-chan" (the "-kun" giving a military vibe in this case). The same happens with Shiho after chapter 126.
• Fun Size: Yeah, it's much harder to take her seriously when she delivers her speeches as her half-foot tall self.
• Future Me Scares Me: With the introduction of her future self, Nagisa is first put off by how strangely she acts (essentially like an amalgamation of her friends' personalities), including getting into a sexiness battle with Shiho. But this trope takes a far more serious turn when Future Nagisa declares that she's going to Kill and Replace her past self, and that she intentionally erased her own memories of her time on Earth and her friends (aside from the bare fact that they were friends), which utterly horrifies Present Nagisa.
• Hot-Blooded: She may not look it at first, but she gets fired up quite easily, and when she decides to do something, she does it with all her might. And ample amounts of ham.
• Humanoid Alien: Aside from being really small and having a glowing dongle thing growing from their foreheads, members of her race could pass for human.
• Imagine Spot: She has quite a few of those in the anime, usually involving what Youko and Asahi are doing at the moment.
• Inconvenient Attraction: Nagisa is distraught to find herself in love with Asahi. Not only she rejected him harshly the previous year (where she hadn't fallen in love yet), but also she knows that her close friend Youko is in love with Asahi too, and that he loves her back.
• Innocently Insensitive: Apparently, Nagisa felt she was doing Asahi a favor by calling him out, rejecting him before he could confess and then telling him how he should focus on a romance that has some possibility of success. Ironically though, Asahi considers that it did help him move forward when he realizes that Nagisa is about to confess to him in chapter 80.
• Insistent Terminology: She doesn't use a hammer, she uses a "memory erasing device". Nor does she use a shovel but a "sleep induction device".
• Instant Cosplay Surprise: When she is distracted, Shiho makes her dress like a catgirl. It takes her awhile to actually notice. The same thing happens in chapter 89, where Shiho stealthily replaces her pants with a miniskirt. Mid-sentence.
• It's the Only Way: In episode 2, she claims the best way to make Asahi forget her true form is by hitting him on the head with a hammer.
• I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Once she realized she loves Asahi but knows he loves Shiragami, she tries very hard to invoke this trope, but always finds it hard to do. She eventually manages to go through with it when she confesses to Asahi in front of Youko so that he can reject her properly and clear up the misunderstanding so that he can confess to Youko.
• Large Ham: Occasionally, but with enormous intensity. Especially striking in contrast with the stern, cool image she normally maintains.
• Lilliputians: Her real body is tiny enough to be mistaken for a figurine. Her sightings have been known as the Hallway Lilliputian, one of The Seven Mysteries of the school.
• Literal-Minded: Nagisa is puzzled by people considering her the Iron Lady. After all, she doesn’t have a particularly noteworthy amount of iron in her body.
  • She also takes the idea that "love is a battle" a tad too literally at times. Like in chapter 80 where she dresses in a battle attire before her confession, until Shiho tells her it doesn't work that way.
• Literally Falling in Love: One-sided example in chapter 26 (see Love Epiphany).
• Little Useless Gun: Her race, despite having made what are basically giant (for them) mecha suits that excellently resemble human beings, clearly still haven't advanced their handheld weaponry's technology enough to make up for being a few centimetres long and firing something far smaller - the rifle Nagisa uses, whatever it shoots, seems to have as much effect against people as a spitball fired out of a straw. Less, if you add that it won't make people wet too.
• Love Epiphany: When Youko arranges for them to meet at the summer festival, she accidentally falls into Asahi's arms and comes to realize that she has feelings for him.
• Mobile-Suit Human: Members of Nagisa's race are only a few inches tall, so they use these to interact with humanity.
• Mooning: Her only weapon against Shiho's perverseness: her own excellent butt, second to none. This, of course, as a Reluctant Fanservice Girl.
• Not So Stoic: It rapidly becomes very clear that her cool and composed attitude falls apart at the slightest vexation, which causes her no end of trouble.
  Nagisa: I'm repeating myself, but… I NEVER LOSE MY COOL!!
• Odd Friendship: She initially resents Shiho because of the latter's perversion (and because she was stealing Asahi's attention), but later form a positive, supporting relationship after becoming neighbors, despite their conflicting personalities and Mutual Masquerade.
• The Perfectionist: She's never satisfied with the cakes she makes, even though she's already well past the Supreme Chef level in this domain.
• Pervert Revenge Mode: Played with in Episode 4 of the anime. To cover up the whole "Aizawa figurine" incident, Asahi volunteers to play The Scapegoat, telling Aizawa to punch him out and claim that she caught him being perverse with the doll. Aizawa goes through with it because it seems like the only way out, but feels incredibly guilty not only because Asahi did nothing wrong, but because he's selflessly letting his own reputation be tarnished in order to protect her secret.
  • She's also prone to do this when Shiho "plays" with her a bit too insistently.
• Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: She goes into this on occasions, often in the "military speak" variant, going with her straight-laced nature.
• Shell-Shocked Veteran: She is sometimes prone to falling in this mode, even though all her military past consists of being trained by her brother. Of course, it's all Rule of Funny.
• Shipper on Deck: Heavily supports Asahi's and Youko's relationship. Or at least tries to, in spite of her own feelings.
• Shout-Out: "Nagisa Park" (same kanji) was the name of a meeting spot for the protagonists of Sakura Discord.
• Spit Take: Played With in chapter 96. While she's deep in her thoughts and sipping a coffee, Asahi shows up out of nowhere, making her 1. freeze 2. slowly turn her head 3. spit out her coffee. Like a step-by-step Spit Take tutorial.
• Supreme Chef: Well, for cakes anyway. She can make cakes Akane would kill for in seconds. Even wedding-cake-size cakes are an easy make for her.
• Tsundere: She evolves into one of sorts after her feelings for Asahi awaken. Only the "tsun" part isn't her denying her own feelings, but simply being completely unable to keep her composure when she's alone with him. More generally, she's constantly switching between her calm and gentle demeanour and her Hot-Blooded rants.
• Unprovoked Pervert Payback: A fantastic example when she yells at Asahi for staring at her antenna (which glows during courting). Of course Asahi doesn't know what this glowing means, and Nagisa can't tell him since it would be the same as confessing her feelings.
  • Not to mention the example listed under Pervert Revenge Mode above, which is unusual because Aizawa knows Asahi is innocent but goes along with it because it's the only way to preserve her secret; she feels horrible about it afterwards, and makes it up to him by telling Youko the truth so she won't think less of Asahi.
• Unrequited Love Switcheroo: Nagisa calls Asahi out to reject him before he can confess, advising him to find a new girl to like. He does and she promptly gets pissed off. Unwilling to accept that he got over her, she decides he must have figured out her true identity. Then, after he finds out she's an alien, she falls in love with him before she has noticed.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: As prone as she is to call her out or beat her up, Shiho is also the first person she talks to when she's troubled, and Shiho herself has a dynamic with Nagisa that she doesn't quite have with anyone else. With time, they become mutual confidants of sorts.
  Nagisa: This girl is a pro… I can safely entrust my butt to her!
• War Is Glorious: She tends to see challenges as battles, and she spends a lot of energy motivating herself and others to do their part - with military slogans and everything.
• You Read Too Many Manga: In early chapters, it seems like all of her information on humanity comes from manga and anime, such as her honest belief that you can easily induce controlled amnesia in humans by whacking them on the head. Chapter 104 (where she's interviewed by fellow aliens) somewhat confirms it by showing her reading a pile of manga to "gather information".

Shirou and Shiho

Both

• Alliterative Name: The syllable "shi" repeated three times.
• Alternate Identity Amnesia: Shiho is always conscious, but Shirou is only aware when he's in control. Later chapters show Shirou is always conscious as well, but he chose not to peek into Shiho's life.
• Childhood Friend: Of Youko, both in their own way.
• Half-Human Hybrid: Werewolf father, charismatic pervert mother.
• Polar Opposite Twins: Well, if you can call them "twins" (they technically are). Shiho is perverted, easygoing, a Perpetual Smiler and not very good at houshold tasks, while Shirou is more serious and coleric, is a Perpetual Frowner, and apparently handles the cooking and cleaning.
• Sex Shifter: Their body changes to match the active part of their Multi-Gendered Split Personalities.
• Slave Collar: A leather collar with what looks like the beginning of a leash, reminiscent of a dog's.
• Split Personality: Each time they transform, they literally become another person entirely, both physically and in character. While Shiho is always conscious, Shirou is asleep when the former is in control.
• Talking to Themself: They can either talk to each other in their mind… or possess different body parts and talk from there − even though there is no mouth to speak from.
• Weaksauce Weakness: Just seeing a picture of the moon makes them transform into the other! Heck, it doesn't even have to be the moon. Anything yellow and circle will suffice, like a slice of lemon.

Shirou Shishido

A wolf-man who is sent by Youko's father to see if she is keeping her secret at school. He also happens to have a crush on her.

• All Animals Are Dogs: He reflexively jumps to catch a wooden stick that Asahi throws, despite being a wolf.
• Butt-Monkey: Due to his "position" (and most of Shiho's transformations being accidental), he tends to often find himself in… awkward and sometimes physically painful situations when he appears. It's quite easy to pity him, really.
• Face of a Thug: Sure he looks imposing and scary, and understandably dislikes when people stare at him, but when you get to know him he's a perfectly nice guy. Although he doesn't smile that much.
• Fan Disservice: Nobody knows how Shiho's underwear looks on her, but we sure know how it looks on his tough, muscular body.
• Hero-Worshipper: He's a huge fan of Akari because of her "legend". Even after learning what that legend is actually about, he still praises her determination.
• Hopeless Suitor: Youko's obvious attraction for Asahi makes him this (although he has presumably liked Youko for a long time).
• Hypocritical Humor: In chapter 22, he tells Asahi that Youko made the promise with her father herself, and that she shouldn't break it for selfish reasons. Asahi meditates on his words for a while… before Shiho points out that Shirou is hoping to marry Youko if he succeeds in his mission, so he isn't really one to talk about "selfishness".
• Informed Attribute: According to Shiho, he's very good at cooking, but he never has a chance to demonstrate it in the story.
• I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Quickly figured out that Asahi knows about Youko's secret, but then let it slide because he saw how much happier Youko is.
• Meaningful Name: The "rou" in his name is made with the kanji meaning "wolf". Furthermore, "Shiro" (meaning white, the color of his hair) is also a common dog's name in Japan.
• Men Can't Keep House: Inverted. He's the one who tells Shiho to clean her mess, while she frequently leaves her clothes, underwear and porn mags all over the place.
• Out of Focus: After a few chapters of introduction, he was largely relegated to the background and rarely appears compared to Shiho.
• Perpetual Frowner: He constantly looks angry or annoyed.
• The Runaway: According to Shiho, he would always run away from their home to Genjirou's house, meaning Genjirou was probably a substitute father figure in Shirou's eyes.
• Scary Teeth: Rows of very sharp fangs.
• Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: He occasionally has this dynamic with Asahi, with his muscular appearance and talks about being a "real man".
• Unlucky Childhood Friend: He wants to marry with Youko, but she isn't interested. Him marrying anyone would be a bit problematic anyway...
• What Happened to the Mouse?: His crush on Youko is never brought up again after his first few appearances. In fact, in later chapters he's openly supporting Youko and Asahi together.

Shiho Shishido

The main personality of their body. Unlike Shirou, not only does she look like a normal human, she is a shameless pervert and even presents herself as one.

• A Day in the Limelight: While she's usually in the position of a bystander or participating in collective antics, chapter 64 (where a certain incident makes her temporarily lose her sex-appeal) is the first one to actually expand her character by exposing the reason she's so fixated on being a pervert, and her worries about not knowing "actual love".
  • And she gets her own dedicated arc in part 2, being the first character to give her name to a chapter title.
• Ambiguously Bi: When it comes to bodily touch, she doesn't really mind copping a feel to girls either. Her "method" to learn how to swim in chapter 18 consists in finding a cute girl in the pool and chasing after her butt − and she gives this advice to both Asahi and Youko.
  Sakurada: Rather than a female pervert, aren't you just a Dirty Old Man?
  Shiho: I'm both a female pervert and a dirty old man!
• Buxom Beauty Standard: The most well-endowed girl of the series, to Mikan's slight irritation in one scene.
• Character Development: While her teasing side remains, her character traits and expressions get much more diverse after her dedicated arc in Part 2.
• Covert Pervert: Might be inverted. While she proudly claims to be a pervert and is certainly good at it, a few hints seem to indicate that she's unconsciously putting on a mask. In chapter 64 she notably laments that she may be immature because she never truly loved anyone, and in chapter 75 her acting as her usual perverted self is treated as an anomaly by nature. There are more hints of this in later chapters.
• Evil Overlord: Implied to become this in Rin's Bad Future, as the Charismatic Pervert II. She apparently submitted 90% of the male population and 70% of the female one to her..."ideology". For a long time it remains a mere suspicion, however. Turns out the Charismatic Pervert II was actually Youko of all people.
• Expy: Mebuki Sakura and Sakura Haruka from Sakura Discord had a child, and Shiho was born. She inherited Haruka's design, Mebuki's purple hair and a lot of her expressions (as well as her habit of saying pronouns and honorifics in katakana), and some personality traits from both characters.
• Heroic BSoD: In Chapter 124, after time-traveler Momochi calls Shiho "grandma" (and they've already heard her call Asahi "grandpa"), Shiho is visibly distraught at the idea that she'd ever be such a horrible person as to steal her best friend's boyfriend. Thankfully, Momochi confirms that Asahi is only an Honorary Grandpa...but then she reveals that her actual grandfather is Shimada...
• He Went That Way: Does this for Asahi and Rin in chapter 34, by hiding them... under her skirt. Somehow. The former gets out with a severe nosebleed.
• Hidden Depths: During a chapter in which natural disasters started because everyone in the main cast was acting out in ways not normal for them, Shiho tried to fix things by acting like her usual perverted self. This made the weather worse. Asahi then asks if maybe she's only forcing herself to be a pervert. It's also made clear early on that she's much more observant and understands people better than she lets on.
• Ladykiller in Love: Chapter 64 implies it might be the case for Asahi, as she pushes him down and tells him that If It's You, It's Okay... before quickly returning to her usual self. Since it is Shiho, it's quite difficult to tell whether she was even half-serious or just teasing. Chapter 119 confirms that she does have feelings for him, and isn't too happy about it.
• Lethal Chef: Her idea of a chocolate dish is a rotten banana dipped in chocolate, complete with flies flying around it. As Akane puts it, it looks like "a different kind of obscenity".
• Lovable Sex Maniac: Her normal behavior, although Asahi is her favorite (and only male) "victim". Aizawa comes second, and occasionally retaliates.
• Meaningful Appearance: She has a beauty mark under each eye, emphasizing her sexiness.
• Ms. Fanservice: In-Universe, but there aren't that many fanservice scenes with her, surprisingly (outside of a few select chapters).
• New Transfer Student: Just when Asahi and Youko thought they were done with her after chapter 12, she decides to join their school basically on a whim. How she managed to find an apartment and sign in the school in a single day isn't explained.
• No Sense of Personal Space: In her introductory chapter, she decides to borrow one of Youko's bras...by taking it off her body, simply shoving her hand down Youko's T-shirt in public.
• Nosebleed: She has one after fondling Nagisa's butt (as in, she literally has her face in it) in chapter 89, reinforcing the idea that she might go both ways.
• Not So Stoic: In Part 1 she's rather impenetrable, always keeping a composed attitude and a quiet smile when she isn't teasing someone. It starts to change during Part 2 when her feelings for Asahi become obvious and when she meets her own granddaughter Yuka. The when she learns that in the future she marries Shimada of all people, she completely breaks.
• Perpetual Smiler: In contrast to Shirou. She always looks like she has something perverted in mind because of that... because, well, that's probably the case.
• Secret-Keeper: Just as much as Asahi for Youko. When she's with her she's always looking out, ready to jump in case a shock would make her wings come out or her fangs apparent.
• Shameless Fanservice Girl: She loves teasing Asahi, such as mentioning she wasn't wearing a bra when he first meets her. Then she starts groping Youko's breasts while asking to borrow a bra from her, prompting him to suffer a massive Nose Bleed as he watched.
• Smarter Than You Look: For all her perverted antics, she's one of the most observant characters of the series, and usually knows when to stop fooling around. Usually.
• Straight Man: Occasionally plays this role when Asahi is not around.
• The Tease: She isn't a pervert for nothing. Of course, her teasing often goes with hearts.
• Took a Level in Badass: Pervert variant in Part 2. After she confesses her long-buried feelings for Asahi, she gains an upgrade in her sex-appeal thanks to the "Purity Power" she developped.
• Verbal Tic: Often starts speaking with a "hmmm"... She also uses the punctuating particle "sa" quite a lot.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With Rin. And she'd willingly become full on friends...If Rin could just give T-back panties a try.
• "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Because her mother is so famous, Shiho feels like she has to surpass her to find happiness. It is implied that this leads her to not quite be her true self.

Okada, Shimada, and Sakurada

The three of them

• Bromantic Foil: They're basically this trope split into three characters to Asahi. Sakurada is nicer, Okada colder and calmer, and Shimada more jerkish and perverted.
• Divergent Character Evolution: In the first chapter they are just "Asahi's three buddies" but their individual characters get more distinctive as the story goes on. Chapter 68 accentuates this, as it focuses on Shima for the first time and at the end more or less reveals that Okada likes Mikan. Okada and Sakurada get their own focus chapters and character arcs later on.
• Freudian Trio: Okada, level-headed and observant, is the Superego; Shima, whose defining trait is being a shameless pervert highly prone to pettiness and jealousy, is the Id; Sakurada, who's calmer than Shima but more given to wackiness than Okada and usually plays peacekeeper, is the Ego.
• Locked Out of the Loop: They all have no idea that most of the cast are supernatural beings.
• Theme Naming: They all have the character for "field" (田) in their name, which is ususally omitted. Also, their first names are unknown (until Part 2). Incidentally, they are Shout Outs to Masuda's previous series Sakura Discord which includes their given names when they are revealed. This also comes up in a way in Part 2, where Asahi's trip to the past shows that Genjirou had a Similar Squad of friends, only their names end with the kanji for "mountain" (山) instead of "field".
• Those Three Guys: They are always seen hanging out together, usually to make comments on Asahi's behaviour or his relationship with Youko. It's somewhat less often the case in Part 2, though, where they get more individualised focuses.

Kanade Okada

Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa

Asahi's friend since middle-school, he's a serious and level-headed guy who seems to observe the events around him without caring much. He's a comically chill guy overall.

• Brutal Honesty: In Chapter 84, rather than trying to coddle or sympathize with Asahi during his Heroic BSoD, he simply says "You know what caused this and you know what you have to do to make it right, so quit sulking and go give Aizawa and Shiragami their answers."
• Cannot Spit It Out: The reason Mikan is so irritated by him. He keeps half-assedly asking her out but can't muster the courage to actually spell out his feelings for her, since he knows he's gonna be rejected anyway.
• Catchphrase: Two, in fact.
  • "Maa, nan da" in Japanese. It's not really translatable (it's kind of like "Oh well") but goes with his uncaring attitude.
  • Whenever Shima wonders aloud why he gets the short end of the stick, Oka's deadpan response is inevitably "Because you're Shima, that's why."
• A Day in the Limelight: Finally gets his own arc in chapter 146, focusing on his relationship with Mikan.
• Deadpan Snarker: Usually the one to give cynical remarks about the other characters' behaviour.
• Dramatic Drop: When he drops his juice box, that means something very disturbing just happened.
• Expy: Of Sakuragaoka "Oka" Kanade from Sakura Discord. More precisely, his design is a mix of SD!Oka (name and glasses) and Shin'ya, the brother of Oka's love interest (same face and haircut).
• The Glasses Gotta Go: He removes his glasses for the first time in chapter 123 to give a proper answer to Yuka's love declarations.
• Henpecked Husband: Implied to become this in Rin's future with Old!Mikan barely acknowledging his existence, though it seems to be a joke on her part.
• Hidden Depths: He's aware of more than he lets on, and might even be aware of some of the secrets floating around the school. He also honestly cares about Asahi's well-being despite the front he puts up. Both of these traits were demonstrated in Chapter 84, where he correctly guesses that Aizawa confessed, Youko is upset because she misunderstood the situation, and brings Asahi out of his funk by saying "You know what caused this, and you know the only way to make it better, so go out there and confess already." It may have something to do with the fact he can hear people's thoughts (well, sometimes).
• Hopeless Suitor: He is one to Mikan. Who is apparently aware of it, sadly enough. However, it's blatantly hinted that he ends up marrying her in Rin's future.
• Important Haircut: He gets his long hair shortened when he starts going after Mikan as a love interest to emphasize that he's more open about his feelings.
• Kick The Son Of A Bitch: Out of all of his group of friends, Oka seems to have the least patience for Shimada's antics. Quite frequently, he will be scornful, or even outright mean to Shima, but given how this is Shima we're talking about, it's almost always deserved.
• Meaningful Rename: It's only alluded to, when we learn that his mother is going to remarry and his family name is going to change. What his new name will be isn't specified, but Old!Mikan implies that it will be crucial in his relationship with Mikan. It is most likely "Kiryuuin", if Rin is Mikan's actual granddaughter.
• Oral Fixation: His juice pack. He holds it by the straw with his mouth, somehow.
• Power Incontinence: He can hear people's superficial thoughts, but can't control what he hears or when. His power has been slowly disappearing since he entered high school, but he can still occasionally hear some bits - like Mei's feelings towards him. After confessing his feelings to Mikan, he stops hearing thoughts entirely, making the only character who successfully managed to protect his secret to the end.
• The Stoic: He keeps his composure and his hands in his pockets in all circumstances. Which includes being thrown out the window by Mikan from the second floor.
  • Not So Stoic: The sight of his own teacher working in a maid café and concluding her service with a completely ridiculous pose is too much for even him to bear.
• Stoic Spectacles: Often combined with Opaque Lenses. He does seem to be the most clever of the bunch.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: He kind of has this dynamic with Mikan, occasionally mocking her and being thrown by her in return. It turns out he has a crush on her.

Yuuta Shimada

Voiced by: Hiro Shimono

A pervert and a loser, prone to laugh at Asahi's misfortunes whenever he has the chance. Much more than at his own, at least. He has a penchant for falling in love for petty reasons, and his perverted zeal has made him the target of multiple arrests by the police.

• A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 68 is focused on him and his, err, "new girlfriend". You'd think it's meant to emphasise his good traits and make him more sympathetic, right? In a normal series, maybe, but this is Jitsu wa, so of course it does the opposite.
• Butt-Monkey: The first chapter has Asahi do a Spit Take right on his face, and he's usually the most unlucky one among the guys.
  Okada: 'Sup. There was a piece of trash that looked an awful lot like Shima in front of the house...
  Asahi: That was Shima.
• Casanova Wannabe: His fruitless attempts to flirt with girls made him consider himself one the "unpopular guys".
• Expy: Of Sakurajima "Shima" Yuuta from Sakura Discord, of which he retained his Butt-Monkey status and penchant for jealousy.
• Fanboy: Shimada loves the school newspaper articles published by Mikan. This actually offends her. He's also a fan of Shiho.
• Flanderization: He went from being the slightly perverted but mostly harmless buddy (although already a jerk) to a creepy and repulsive guy Asahi desperately tries to stop whenever he tries to make a move. It culminates with him doing something to Ryou in chapter 88.
• The Friend Nobody Likes: Sleazy, perverted, mean-spirited, and all-around rather pathetic, he's the group's dedicated punching bag. Oka is notably prone to hit him out of nowhere, just because. Practically everyone who has ever met him is utterly repulsed by his behaviour.
• Given Name Reveal: Of the most hilarious and horrifying kind. In chapter 124, after Yuka clears the misunderstanding about her calling Asahi "grandpa", Shiho has a sigh of relief because it means she didn't steal Asahi from Youko in the future. At the same time, Yuka casually casually mentions her real grandpa called "Yuuta". No one picks up on it at first… except Nagisa, who remembers that Yuuta is Shimada's first name, which Yuka confirms. Shiho is not amused.
• Held Back in School: In an omake, he reveals that he had to repeat a year.
• Horrible Judge of Character: It never occurs to him that his "girlfriend" Ryou is just using him as a Meal Ticket, even though his three friends all notice right away and she herself makes little effort to be discreet about it.
• In-Universe Nickname: Okada calls him "Shima-kou" (again, Nomiya also called Sakurajima this way in SD.) This time the nickname is meaningful: since Shimada is technically a year older than the rest of his class, he demands to be called "Senpai." Okada, knowing that it's something he shouldn't be bragging about, instead calls him the opposite.
• Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: In chapter 84, after Youko has run away from Asahi because she thought he had accepted Nagisa's confession, Shima seems on his way to cheer him up… only to break into a rant that amounts to "haha, serves you right for having so many girls around you!"
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: However, he does demonstrate some positive traits, mostly his loyalty to his friends. He's been a Shipper on Deck for Asahi and Youko from the very start^note The above rant was mainly because rumors were flying that Asahi was a womanizing playboy with a ton of girlfriends and is quite nice to Youko, never perving on her and trying to make amends when he (incorrectly) thinks she's developed a negative opinion of him. He also supported Sakurada's efforts to confess to Akari, especially considering this usually got him beaten up by the latter. Then we have Chapter 137, where he explains to Shiho that he didn't respond to her advances because he knew she had just been rejected by Asahi and even he's not scummy enough to take advantage of a girl's emotional distress (though he still does it in a very jerkish way). Later on in the series he goes along with Asahi's plan to drive off the reporters hunting for the Seven School Mysteries without any indication that he's being bribed or coerced, just that he wants to help his friend. Lampshaded in the penultimate chapter when Akane tells him "you're occasionally tolerable when you're looking out for your friends".
• Older Than They Look: Downplayed. He's actually one year older than the rest, having doubled a class, but he's about as tall as Mikan.
• Running Gag: Every girl he could become potentially romantically involved with turns out to actually be male in some fashion:
  • Ryou: Male alien who drives a female Mobile-Suit Human as a disguise.
  • Yumi: Actually Genjirou (male vampire) in disguise.
  • Shiho: Female, but transforms into a male wolfman whenever she sees a full moon (or anything resembling one).
• Self-Serving Memory: He keeps trying to act like Asahi is just as much of a pervert as he is, much to Asahi's distress.

Kousuke Sakurada

The "big brother" of the group, who talks like a girl for some reason. He's a kind and compasionate guy... as long as you don't get on his bad side. A former delinquent, he changed his ways when he entered high school.

• Amazon Chaser: He fell for Akari after she beat him in a fight. It's also when he stopped being a delinquent.
• A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 139 to 142 are focused on his battle to win Akari's heart. They give us some flashbacks about their meeting and how the "Crimson Demon" became "Sakurada the Buddha".
• Batter Up!: He carries a freaking studded bat in chapter 83.
• Because You Were Nice to Me: His crush on Akari seems to be a mix of this and Love at First Punch. She was the first one who really listened to his worries and helped him become a better person. In chapter 142, he returns the favor when he confesses to her.
  • It's also shown that this is his attitude towards Asahi. Sakurada transferred schools in the hopes of getting away from his old "Crimson Demon" reputation and getting a fresh start, but the rumors followed him and it looked like he'd never get away from it. But then Asahi dismissed all that by saying that Sakurada is more like the Buddha, looking after everyone with a smile on his face, which convinced the others of the same.
• Berserk Button: He HATES amorality, and gets extremely pissed when he believes Kuromine is a playboy.
• Dropping the Bombshell: While the rest of his class are discussing a strategy to take down Akari in dodgeball, he casually mentions that he plans on confessing his love to Akari if they win. Everyone takes a few panels to realize what they just heard, and has to ask him to repeat himself to make sure they heard him correctly.
• Face of a Thug: His intimidating physique has caused people to distrust him a lot in the past, which got him into troubles and made him become a fearsome delinquent obsessed with strength. His meeting with Akari led him to reconsider his views and try to earn people's trust rather than being feared by them.
• Gentle Giant: 182cm and 85kg of sweetness.
• Hot for Teacher: Not outright revealed but heavily implied in chapter 88. One of the students sending a question to Karen's radio show is a girl named "Sakurako", who says she's in love with her homeroom teacher. Considering the other two questions in the chapter were from well-known characters, and the fact Sakurada talks like a girl, many readers did the math. Confirmed in chapter 98.
• Japanese Delinquents: Turns out he was feared as the Crimson Demon of Junior East. That is, until Akari "chastised" him.
• Monochromatic Eyes: His eyes turn entirely white if you make him angry, making him look even more like a demon.
• Noodle Incident: He had a fight with Akari on "that day". Asahi repeatedly and irritatedly asks when "that day" was, since both he and Akari talk about it as if it was long ago.
• Perpetual Smiler: Almost always seen with a smile on his face.
• Red Baron: Crimson Demon of Junior East, during his delinquent days. Nowadays he's more known as Sakurada the Buddha.
• Retired Badass: Can instill fear in others when needed, but nowadays he's known as Sakurada the Buddha. How badass is he? Oka is pretty sure that Sakura can give AKARI a run for her money. He was right, though not exactly in the way he thought.
• Reused Character Design: He's the spitting image of an unnamed minor character in Sakura Discord − a baseball player, amusingly. His name is similar to said series' protagonist, Sakura Kousuke.
• Team Mom: He sort of plays this role within the four friends' group, being the gentle and considerate one.
  Asahi: If you look at Sakurada-kun, he gives off more of a buddha vibe than a demon one, right? He's always standing firm and looking after us with a smile.
• Younger Than He Looks: Despite what you might think, Sakurada is the same age as the others. Since he appears somewhat more mature, they address him with a "-san".
  • Played with in a omake, in which they do a Bait-and-Switch where they talk about one of the three being older than everybody else, but it turns out to be Shima.

Rin Kiryuuin

^Sparkle! 

Asahi's granddaughter from fifty years in the future. She is on a mission to prevent the Charismatic Pervert II from taking over the world. A very affectionate, clingy, and unintelligent girl, she usually rides on the shoulders of her friends, mainly Asahi.

• Action Girl: Although the "action" in question is a bit... peculiar. Namely, fighting girls in immodest attires by buttoning up their cleavages. With a sword. Somehow.
• Adapted Out: She doesn't appear in the anime at all, with her role in some stories being handed to Nagisa and her first appearance (which would have happened in the final episode) being completely excised.
• Bishie Sparkle: She occasionally emits a single, big sparkle when doing a cool reply (or something).
• Cannot Keep a Secret: She is certainly terrible at holding confidential information. She will often realize too late she said too much, and bury her face in her hands in shame. She's Asahi's granddaughter alright.
• Characterization Marches On: She starts off as pretty comically serious, but the story tends to play up her cute and childish side more and more as it goes on, notably through her relationship with Mikan, who kind of acts as her big sister/mother.
• Cool Sword: Though she never uses it to cut anything. It's either for buttoning shirts or opening the door of her apartment.
• Cuddle Bug: When it comes to Asahi. The first thing she does when she meets him in the present is to latch on to him and in later chapters she's often shown riding on his shoulders or hugging him closely. It's such a common occurence that even the other characters have stopped commenting on it.
• Disappeared Grandmother: It's all but confirmed that Youko is her grandmother, but she ran away when her powers went out of control and asked Akane to deliver their daughter to Asahi. As a result, Rin wants to change the future not just for Asahi's sake, but for her mother's, since she grew up never knowing her own mother.
• First-Name Basis: With everyone, including her grandfather, except with Mikan, whom she calls "granny". Notably, she doesn't use any honorifics.
• Grandparent's Girl: Is very close and affectionate with both the present and future versions of her grandfather Asahi. Ditto for her 'granny' Mikan.
• Half-Human Hybrid: Possibly. If she's Asahi and Youko's granddaughter, that would make her part-vampire, although she doesn't exhibit any vampire traits. Ultimately turns out to be true, since her mother was a vampire (and very heavily implied to be Asahi and Youko's daughter.
• Kid from the Future: Asahi's grand-daughter, through his daughter. She comes from a horrific future where perverts rule the world.
• Luke, You Are My Father: After several ambiguous lines letting people think that she's a girl Asahi went out with and forgot, they escape with the help of Shiho. She then declares that she's Asahi's granddaughter.
• Modesty Shorts: Members of the resistance like her wear this as a rallying sign, in a future where mini-skirt + no-pants has become the norm.
• Ms. Exposition: She's the one to explain Asahi, Shiho and Mikan what happened in her future.
• Ms. Imagination: Her mind tends to slightly magnify what she hears, and her grandiose attitude makes Akane call her a "chuunibyou". Made more amusing by the reveal that she's actually a second year middle-school, which makes her a literal "chuuni".
• Odd Friendship: She and Shiho end up forming one of these, with Rin even helping Shiho train her pervertedness so she can try and defeat her mother.
• Older Than She Looks: She's supposedly 15 or 16, but looks and, often, acts like she's 11 or 12. She even uses a rubber ring to swim... in an onsen. It's lampshaded in chapter 97, when she interacts with Sakurada of all people: it literally looks like an middle-aged adult talking to a grade-schooler. Ultimately subverted in chapter 192 where she reveals that she's actually a second year middle-schooler in her timeline. Meaning she really is as old as she looks.
• Our Dragons Are Different: Hers is a living time-travel machine. And you have to pay a rent to live inside it apparently. Oh, and it can do shopping too.
• Red Baron: Her enemies call her the "Flashing Buttoner", due to how quickly she buttons up their blouses with one slash of her sword. Asahi notes that it is a lame nickname.
• Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Her ultimate goal in the past is to repair her bad future, which includes getting strong enough to do something about the Charismatic Pervert II and keeping Youko from leaving, which broke Future Asahi's heart and resulted in Rin's mother never knowing her own mother. While she helps out in the present, it turns out that Jitsu wa runs on Multiverse Theory, so after things are nice and settled she and Yuka return to the future, defeat the perverts, and reunite Future Asahi with Future Youko, then Future Akane lets her return to the past so she can spend the rest of the series hanging out with the cast.
• Trademark Favorite Food: She's often seen munching on some kind of bun that she holds with both hands, which adds to her childish demeanour.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With Shiho. Even if they continue to do "battle", she's still the first person (Besides Asahi and Mikan) Rin manages to bond with.

Karen Shirogane

A demon hired by Genjirou to bring Youko back home after Shirou apparently forgot about his mission... or so she claims. She's actually a (self-proclaimed) fallen angel, and the student council president of the school. Despite being technically a student, she is more often seen helping out Akane in her Principal tasks. A profoundly sweet girl, Karen has been the Student Council President for decades on end.

• Be Careful What You Wish For: She invokes this in her introduction, claiming that demons should grant wishes the way you least expect them to.
• Benevolent Boss: The first hint that she's not really a demon is her relationship with her crow "slaves". The crows are prone to disobeying her and she offers them fair work shifts, time off, and wages.
• Butt-Monkey: Akane plays the poor girl like a harp, and apparently on a regular basis.
• Catchphrase: "But I'll take a 'thank you' as compensation." Because she's a demon, so if you want her to grant your wish, you have to pay a price.
• The Ditz: In a series filled with dumb people, she manages to be one of the dumbest. For one, she constantly believes Akane's lies despite having known her for over 20 years.
• Early-Installment Weirdness: Two instances in her case.
  • At the end of her introduction chapter (and the first few pages of the one after) she has four wings, but afterwards she only ever has two. It was never explained. The four wings only reappear once in a couple of panels near the end of the series, and far in the background.
  • She also mentioned having enmity and rivalry towards Akane, and almost starts a fight with her, but it was never brought up again.
• Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Inverted; in her first appearance she looks like a perfectly believable demon, but is actually the kindest girl you can meet.
• Fallen Angel: This is what she really is, since Akane stole her halo and disguised it as a lightbulb.
• Feather Flechettes: She uses a sloth feather this way to stop Asahi in chapter 60 − usually though they are just stuck manually into the target.
• Forehead of Doom: Her completely bare forehead allows more emphasis on her eyebrows, thus enhancing her expressiveness.
• Good Is Dumb: Compared to the demon Akane's shrewedness, the angel Karen isn't very bright to say the least.
• Have I Mentioned I Am a Dwarf Today?: She's constantly reminding people that she's a demon. That's because she's not.
• Held Back in School: Akane asked her to remain in the school (because she doesn't have to pay her), and as a result she's now in the same class as Asahi despite being much older.
• Hidden in Plain Sight: Her angelic halo is disguised as the lightbulb in the student council's room.
• Horned Humanoid: Like Akane, although her horns are black and the shape is a bit different. They turn out to be fake.
• Horrible Judge of Character: Let's just say she's a slightly gullible girl. She occasionally yells at Akane, but apparently fails to notice that the Principal is basically exploiting her.
• Ironic Name: Played with. The characters of her first name (華恋) roughly mean "beautiful love". At first it seems completely at odds with her character... until she turns out to be an incredibly kind person who would like to pretend she's evil. The poor girl is even betrayed by her own name.
• Jackass Genie: She claims that devils should grant wishes exactly as they are said, but grant them in a way that causes the wisher misery, and then demand payment. For example, when Akane bursts into the room and demands fried rice, Karen complies... but reveals that the fried rice contained nutritious bell peppers.
• Knight of Cerebus: In her first appearances, she seemed on her way to become this, and almost convincingly so. But it doesn't take long for her "evil demon" act to fall apart.
• Minion with an F in Evil: Karen is sent to prove that Asahi knows Youko is a vampire, but when it becomes clear that they’re protecting each other she starts bawling in sympathy. Then she tries to sic her crows on them, but they start pecking at her head instead.
• Nice Girl: Well, she is an angel. While she is prone to make creepy "evil" faces, the things she says while doing them are either completely benign or plain adorable.
• Perpetual Molt: She seems to lose feathers very easily when she spreads her wings, as shown in chapter 62. It can be a bit dangerous, as they are no ordinary feathers − especially in Akane is around.
• Phrase Catcher: "She's an angel!" (whenever the above happens)
• Poke the Poodle: She is really bad at being a demon, no matter how much she would like to.
• Really 700 Years Old: Her age is more vague than Akane's, but she's been student council president for 20 years and has known Akari since the latter's birth, meaning she's way older than she looks. She also claims that Akane and her have been rivals for the past century.
• Remember the New Guy?: Since she's the student council president, it's implied she has been there at the school all along before her introduction, just never mentioned. It turns out Aizawa and Mikan already knew she was the president and had talked to her before.
• Seven Deadly Sins: Her feathers have the power to make people fall into one of the Sins. She paralyzed Asahi with a Sloth feather that made his leg fall asleep. Trouble occurs in a later chapter when Akane steals a Lust feather for her own amusement. Akari then sticks a Wrath feather on herself so she can properly "chastise" Akane.
• Shipper on Deck: For Touko and Genjirou during their highschool days. In the present, she's this for Asahi and Youko.
  Karen: You're really out of luck. Being cursed by a demon two generations in a row...Now, you can lament your misfortune...and then..fall into happiness, poor creatures!
• Slasher Smile: Prone to making this, as part of her demon act, all while saying or doing the nicest things.
• Speaks Fluent Animal: If the volume 13 omake is anything to go by, she can understand animals. Or at least, pteranodons.
• Student Council President: She has held this position for 20 years. Few people know her because there hasn't been any election during that time. When it comes for graduation and the former president gives a speech and departs before the newly inducted president gives one, no one seems to bat an eye, save Asahi, when she gives the departing speech, steps back, and walks back to the podium.
• Super Gullible: She believes anything Akane said, despite the countless times she's been lied to.
• Unknown Rival: Self-proclaimed rival to Akane. Akane first pretends that she doesn't know who Karen is, despite their shared backstory. Of course, she does.
• White Hair, Black Heart: Long, gleaming silver hair. The black heart is just an act, and not a very good one either.
• Will Not Tell a Lie: While Asahi and Youko are terrible a telling lies, Karen wouldn't even try. There is nothing but genuine good intention in everything she says and does, which tends to backfire more often than not.

Sasaki, Inaba and Matsumoto

Megumi Sasaki, Hiromi Inaba and Matsumoto

Three classmates of Asahi and Youko, who befriend the latter after seeing she has opened up.

---

• Early-Bird Cameo: Two of them appear in a brief panel in the very first chapter, and Sasaki can be seen among the students during the second sports fest.
• Love Hurts: Played for Laughs. Sasaki doesn't like remembering her break-up with her ex-boyfriend, and thinks Youko is sympathizing with her when she's just crying because of garlic chips, leading to a weirdly heartwarming moment. In Chapter 195, as Akane gives Sasaki her diploma, she tells the girl "Stop brooding over that worthless ex of yours, you can do so much better than him."
• No Name Given: Throughout the series we only ever hear their surnames. However, the penultimate chapter reveals Sasaki and Inaba's first names; Matsumoto's graduation is covered by narration so we don't learn her name.
• Those Two Guys: In a more conventional way than Okada, Sakurada and Shimada. A sort of running gag has Youko always calling their three names together.

Teachers and staff

Akari Koumoto

Voiced by: Emi Nitta

The homeroom and English teacher of Asahi and co's class, she actually knows about all their secrets, but is more busy dealing with her devilish ancestor Akane. Though and excellent and doting teacher, she is very volatile, and resents the fact that she has never had a boyfriend.

• Badass Teacher: She is pretty much the only force capable of making Akane pay when her pranks go a little too far. Oh, and she also saved the world. Twice.
• Best Her to Bed Her: She will only fall for a man stronger than her. Problem: she's so insanely strong that not many men (if any) can fill that criterion. Sakurada tries (with the help of the whole class) but fails in chapter 98. He tries again during the second sports festival, and succeeds spectacularly in chapter 142.
• Broken Pedestal: Averted. Shiro looks up to Akari for being a badass delinquent in her youth, but Akane reveals (and Akari admits) that it was all just her failed attempts to get a boyfriend and going berserk when getting rejected. After all this, Shiro says he admires her all the more, since it took incredible courage for her to keep getting back up no matter how many times she was knocked down.
• Cerebus Retcon: In the first part of the series she's the butt of a ton of jokes about her being a lonely spinster with unrealistic fantasies about getting swept off her feet by a "handsome prince on a white horse". In Part 2, we see that people have been mocking her and calling her ugly since she was a little kid, simply because she's taller and stronger than the average girl, and her prince fantasy springs from her long-unfulfilled desire to be seen as pretty and feminine; while this does recast her character in a far more serious and sympathetic light, it can also make some of those earlier jokes feel pretty mean-spirited.
• Cheshire Cat Grin: See that lovely smile on the image? Yeah, that's not a good sign when she has it.
• Cool Car: She buys a new one at some point and takes the party to a trip with it. Then she lets Akane drive it when she is asleep after drinking too much.
  Akari: Hahaha... why would you apologize? I'm just asking a single question. Where is my brand new car? [cue the ruined car in the background]
• The Dreaded: Everyone is terrified of angering Akari. EVERYONE. Mikan even noted fighting Godzilla would be easier than a pissed off Akari.
• Dude, Where's My Respect?: Being suddenly called "Akari-chan" by Youko comes out as a bit of a shock to her, especially when the other students address her respectfully.
• Even the Girls Want Her: According to the volume 13 omake, she's quite popular with girls. The problem is, she's popular only with girls.
• Fiery Redhead: A very deep crimson. And you DON'T want to piss her off.
• Flanderization: In the early chapters, her single status was only mentioned occasionally, and not really focused on. But starting from chapter 44, where she takes cooking classes, this part of her character has inflated to increasingly ridiculous extremes (along with her demonic traits), making her more of a parodic exaggeration of the trope.
• Half-Human Hybrid: She's technically 1/16 demon, assuming Akane is the only demon in the family. As she explained, though, the demon blood's power is too thin and she's practically a normal human. Or so she says, but her strength is definitely not human. Chapter 138 shows that there might be a tad more demonic blood in her than she initially thought, when she grows a pair of demonic horns, Black Eyes of Crazy and one hell of an evil aura after attending three of her friends' weddings in a row.
• Hard-Drinking Party Girl: She has an immoderate taste for beer, which is the cause of the above incident.
• Huge Schoolgirl: She had a complex about it in grade school, as this and her tomboyish personality made her look "uncute" and a laughing stock to the boys.
• Informed Deformity: Think Akari is pretty? Well, you’re wrong. She is so lacking in sex appeal that it rubs off on Shiho. Though it's less because of her looks than an abstract "aura" that she emits (her trademark jersey and rather boorish manners don't help).
• The Jailbait Wait: A variant of the trope. Although Sakurada is already 18 when he confesses to her and she does accept his feelings, she makes it clear that they can't act as a couple until he graduates.
• Japanese Delinquents: Used to be one, and would rather not let anyone know about it. There are a hundred stories of her legendary exploits ...and they all turn out to be botched exploits of love.
• The Lad-ette: A downplayed example (lacking the sexual part, notably). She's an overall nice woman as long as you don't push her wrong buttons, but she's still fond of alcohol, has a masculine speech, isn't picky about what she wears and isn't someone you'd want to pick a fight with.
• Magical Girl: In chapter 82 she discovers that Akane has taken her appearance and made a short movie featuring "her". Now the whole city knows Akari as "the Middle-Aged Magical Girl Akalyn".
• One-Woman Army: Decides to have a co-ed dodge ball match for the class. Except it's the entire class versus her. And she WINS.
• Only Sane Man: Boy does she try her hardest. She has some sympathy towards Asahi because she knows exactly what he's going through. However...
  • Not So Above It All: Once we find out about the chain of humiliating failures that is her love life, warped views on finding a soulmate, and idea of "sexy", it becomes abundantly clear that she's no better than the craziest of them.
• Red Baron: "Akari of the Hundred Visits". This mysterious and fearsome nickname refers to... her hundred failed attempts at getting a boyfriend.
• Running Gag: Her overwhelming "singleness". It's enough to make Shiho forget how to act sexy. It's so impenetrable that not even the combined power of several gods of fortune can grant her wish of having a boyfriend.
• Sensei-chan: She averts it for the most part, staying relatively formal with her students (relatively), hence why she is in shock when Youko starts to call her "Akari-chan" at the end of chapter 57.
  Akane: Welcome to the world of idiots.
• Skewed Priorities: When Akane was being extra nice to her and thought she did something, the first thing she checked was her beer supply then her car to see if she damaged them. Akane even lampshades this fact.
• Slasher Smile: Much like Akane, she has a tendency to break out into comedically creepy smiles when someone stirs up trouble - especially Akane herself.
• Sophisticated as Hell: She can speak politely and respectfully to Akane one second and call her a shitty old hag the next.
• Super-Strength: While it's mostly Played for Laughs, she still has a terrifying strength, maybe from her demonic blood.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Beer and alcoholic drinks.
• The Unsmile: Her attempts at "smiling" when she works in a maid café are far more terrifying than any of her Slasher Smiles. Asahi and his friends may or may not be scarred for life.
• Vague Age: We can only assume she's in her late twenties or early-to-mid-thirties. Asking her directly is probably a bad idea.
• Womanchild: Despite being a fully grown adult, she's waiting to be swept off of her feet by an honest to god prince on a white horse.

• Antiquated Linguistics: Speaks in a slightly old-fashioned (and arrogant) way, being as old as she is.
• Armor-Piercing Question: Near the end of chapter 49, Akane forces Shiragami to stop running from the problem, and ask herself what she really wants out of her friendship with Asahi.
  Akane: Very well...Then you shall choose. What do you wish for? Love between Kuromine and Aizawa? Or perhaps love between you and Kuromine?
  • During a shopping-trip, where she mistakes for a date between Akari and Sakurada she tries her hardest to sabotage the event, until Karen asks her if she is afraid of being lonely without Akari around. The question prompts a rare, emotional reaction from her.
• Benevolent Genie: One chapter shows that in the past, she made a deal with Touko to "protect Shiragami"; obviously Touko was referring specifically to Genjirou, but the story implies that Akane is intentionally using Exact Words to extend this protection to their daughter Youko.
• Big Good: Despite her status as a Troll and The Prankster, Akane is the principal and thus the leading authority figure of the school, as well as the oldest and most powerful character in the series. She also ultimately looks out for the best interests of her students and their secrets, and is a key figure in enabling monsters and humans to coexist.
• Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: A rare female example regarding Akari. Sure she constantly trolls her great-great-granddaughter about being a "spinster", but when she thinks Akari might soon get a boyfriend, she does not approve. If Karen is to be believed, Akane was also like this with Akari's mother.
• Deal with the Devil: Chapter 136 reveals that Akane made a demonic deal with Youko's mother (in exchange for an ice cream bar) to "protect Shiragami", which Akane has interpreted to cover both Youko's father and Youko herself. Another explanation, though, is that she simply does it out of friendship.
• Department of Redundancy Department: When she's judging Aizawa's second, crunchy cake.
  "What is this? This crunchiness... it's... yes, crunchy! And the crunchiness that follows is also crunchy! And it's so... that's right, crunchy!"

• Disproportionate Retribution/Evil Is Petty: Tries to destroy the world after being refused chocolates.
• Drives Like Crazy: Played With in chapter 29. She has a driving license and is able to drive a car...from 100 years ago. She has no idea how to operate modern cars, so she used telekinesis to move the car instead, which needs immense amount if concentration. Of course, various things happen to disturb her. By the end of the chapter, the (brand new) car was reduced to pile of scraps.
• Funny Background Event: When Karen explains how she lost her halo, Akane is shown playing with that very halo behind her.
• Hidden Depths: It's hinted the reason why she likes to prank Akari so much is because she's afraid of being lonely. She's also shown to genuinely care for her students' well-being behind all her trolling, and she does have a (yet unspecified) goal in gathering non-human students. It also becomes apparent later on that she consistently puts on a trollish persona because she just can't be honest with her own feelings.
• Horned Humanoid: Large spiral horns out the sides of her head. She uses illusion magic to make it look like she takes them off so that people think they're fake.
• I Resemble That Remark!: Akane looks like a kid but tries to talk about how adult she is. Youko can easily bait her with candy and make her jump for things being held out of her reach.
• Immortal Immaturity: There is a reason both Youko and her mother call her "Akane-chan", even knowing what she is. The characters lampshade several times that this is not how a thousand-year old devil should behave.
• Jerkass: Akane is incredibly selfish and childish, abusing the hell out of everyone around her unless Akari manages to keep her in her place.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Yes, she's a greedy, lying, food-obsessed troll. But she also cares about her students despite her Hidden Heart of Gold-hiding facade and wants the school to be a place where humans and non-humans can co-exist peacefully.
• Laser-Guided Karma: The instant Akane gets Aizawa indebted to her, she tries to repay the favor by having all her friends also bake cakes for Akane. Trouble is, only Aizawa can handle cooking competently.
• Last-Name Basis: With all of the students, when not calling them by their nicknames.
• Loophole Abuse: She offers a wish to whoever wins the school festival every year. However, since no one know what she looks like (the "principal nobody's seen" and "horned girl" are counted among the school's mysteries, but separately) and the event isn't limited to students, she always participates herself and wins. The people who do know who she is aren't interested in letting her pull that off again.
• Me's a Crowd: One of her powers is to multiply herself. And she's the last person you want to have multiple copies of.
• My Greatest Failure: Blames herself for Shirayuki having gone off the deep end, and consequently everything that befell Youko's parents.
• Never My Fault: She blames her students for driving them into the woods during a blizzard because they wouldn't give her their candy.
• No-Sell: An omake reveals that Karen's Sin Feathers don't work on her, as she's already filled to the brim with the seven sins anyway.
• Our Demons Are Different: Demons are described as beings who grant wishes for a price, but they don't seem to obey any big Devil. And while she loves trolling people, Akane isn't really evil, nor is her trolling meaningless (…most of the time). Now it's unknown whether Akane is special or most demons are like her (but she seems to have quite a high rank). The only thing we know is that there's something much worse than her that can be summoned.
• Phrase Catcher: "She's a demon!" (whenever she's being a jerk to Karen, often just after Karen's own phrase catch).
• Pragmatic Villainy: She occasionally does random good deeds for Akari, for the simple reason that she's pretty sure she'll kill her one day if she doesn't rack up some brownie points. Alas in chapter 82, she takes the act so far that Akari immediately picks up that something's wrong.
  Akane: Yes... "we are a family". Should you, by any chance, find out something that makes you feel like ripping me to shreds... I want you to remember this.
• The Prankster: A bit of a trollish one, as she loves to take people's appearance or deceive them just for shits and giggles. She often dearly regrets making Akari the target of her jokes though.
• Really 700 Years Old: She's Akari's great-great-grandmother, no less. Oddly, she seems to be making herself look younger and younger; flashbacks to hundreds of years back show her looking unambiguously adult, flashbacks to a decade or two back show her as a younger adult, and in the present day she appears to be the same age as, if not younger than, her students.
• Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: At the end of the series, she gives Genjirou, Karen, and Touko their diplomas to fulfill her deal to help them all graduate. She justifies the former two since Karen's been technically attending school for about twenty years, and Genjirou helped teach the third-year class. For the latter, her reasoning is basically "I'm the principal, so I can do whatever I want."
• Seers: She can see almost everything going on around her.
• Sensei-chan: She was pretty much this back when she taught Genjirou and Touko. Judging from the flashbacks she was likely this when she taught Shirayuki all the way back in the Edo Era.
• Slasher Smile: Likes to do these, appealing to her devilish nature.
• Sleep-Mode Size: It's made clear later on that her teenage appearance is not her true form − she normally looks like an adult woman with long hair, Scary Teeth, and more angular horns. It's not made clear, however, whether this was deliberate or her power decreased somehow.
  • Either way, it's a nice compromise between needing to stay a demon and acquiring essentially benevolent goals: by remaking herself this way she stays "evil" enough to count without all that feudal demonic butchering of random villages and casting plagues which don't fly in the modern age. This trope might even be inverted, with her power slowly increasing both because she's been restricting and containing it and becoming less of a target for serious attempts at demonslaying. We don't have the information to be sure.
• Suspiciously Specific Denial: A hilarious instance in chapter 82, after she pops up with a pretty smile and an apron, when Akari was expecting a prank.
  Akane: I'm not planning anything and I'm not hiding anything.
  Akari: What are you planning and what are you hiding?!
• Sweet Tooth: If she goes too long without a sugar fix, she’ll get so angry that she becomes uncontrollable and might try to destroy the world. She’s also easily distracted by candy, instantly leaping for it no matter where it is and what she’s doing at the time.
• The Tooth Hurts: She gets tooth cavities from eating too many sweets in chapter 107, and goes to extreme lengths to avoid going to the dentist. They include fleeing to the era of dinosaurs with Rin's time machine and turning into a giant. An epic battle with Akari, Karen, Rin and Yuka with the fate of Earth at stake ensues, as the tooth pain makes Akane's powers go berserk. In the end, she gets her tooth treated normally and realizes it didn't really hurt that much.
• Trickster Mentor: Behind her demonic antics, Akane provides the forceful dropkick when the characters are in need of a push. She notably takes the time to provide legitimately useful information and guidance to Asahi and Youko on their relationship, even if that guidance is delivered in a deliberately painful and/or unpleasant manner. Though one of the times she helps, she just wants Aizawa to be in her debt. She's also this to Asahi in particular, giving him advice and making him understand important things about interaction with non-humans.
• Troll: When her face becomes noseless, gets a small triangular smile, and vertical black dots for eyes, she is in Trolling mode. Take when she is behind Karen and is playing with Karen's lost halo or denying she even knows who Karen is, her face is always in this form.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With Karen, one-sidedly on her part. For all the bullying she inflicts on the angel, she's the only person Akane is willing to treat to a meal. She seems to have a similar relationship with Touko (she apparently trolled her to hell when she was her teacher), though the vitriol is on both sides in that case.
• Voluntary Shapeshifting: Often part of her pranks, although she deliberately keeps her horns even when transformed, so everybody knows it's her. This also combines well with Me's a Crowd.
• We Want Our Jerk Back!: And there's a good reason people don't really want her to stop being a jerk. When Akari breaks one of her horns and she suddenly becomes kind and supportive, nature itself cannot compute the change and the Earth is on the verge of destruction.

Yumi Ryokuenzaka

A beautiful woman hired as an assistant homeroom teacher in Asahi's class, when the new year starts.

• Attractive Bent-Gender: Everyone in the class is stunned by her gorgeous looks when she's introduced. Too bad she turns out to be a giant, bearded, male vampire. Of course, Shima quickly becomes attracted to her.
• Broken Record: "I'm Ryokuenzaka Yumi," to deflect any suspicion that she isn't.
• Call-Back: The scene where she reveals her vampire wings is almost identical to the one in chapter 1, full with same line in the page before. The similarities are not coincidental.
• First-Episode Twist: A variant: her role as The Mole is revealed to Asahi exactly one chapter after her introduction.
• Foreshadowing: Her mouth-hiding gesture when she's introduced is the same as Youko.
• Formal Characters Use Keigo: Speaks in a polite manner, adding to her graceful demeanour.
• Hot Teacher: A young, pretty, and graceful assistant teacher, to the delight of all the students.
• Ice Queen: Beautiful and composed even in a noisy class, which makes Youko call her the "Golden Cool Beauty". Of course, it's also a complete facade.
• Kimono Is Traditional: Wears a kimono with a hakama, again emphasizing her Ice Queen traits.
• Meaningful Name: "Ryokuenzaka" is Touko Shiragami's maiden name, a fact you don't learn until near the end of the series. When Asahi discovers this, he double-Face Palms at the idea that Genjirou thought such an obvious name would possibly work. Furthermore, a throwaway line in chapter 189 reveals that Yumi was the name of Touko's pet dog.
• New Transfer Student: Teacher variant, being hired to assist Akari at the beginning of Part 2. Unsurprisingly, Akane is the one who deliberately let her in.
• Paper-Thin Disguise: Ultimately subverted. When Asahi learns that "Ryokuenzaka" is Touko's maiden name, he mentally wonders how Genjirou could possibly think it was a good disguise and how Youko could fail to notice. Later on Akane explains that Touko cut all ties to her family in order to marry Genjirou (since they'd hardly approve of her marrying a vampire), so the name probably means nothing whatsoever to Youko.
• Psychologist Teacher: Invoked. Despite her ulterior motives, she still takes her assistant teacher job very much at heart, and intends to do her best to listen to the students' worries. Problem is, the first student to consult her is Shimada, which turns out as well as you might expect.
• Supernatural Gold Eyes: She's somewhere between dark yellow and orange (similar to Karen), hinting from the start that she isn't human.
• Suspiciously Specific Denial: To the extreme. She's absolutely not an agent sent by Genjirou to take Youko back, promise. And indeed, technically she's not, since she's Genjirou himself.
• Walking Spoiler: There isn't too much to say about her, other than that she's a vampire, she's Genjirou's final spy, and that she's Genjirou himself.

Genjirou Shiragami

Youko's 4-meter tall vampire of a father. A bit scary on the outside, he's a very (excessively...) caring dad to Youko. Though extremely intimidating, he is very clumsy.

• Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Rather than his daughter's secret being exposed, he's far more worried about whether or not she is going out with someone.
• Crazy Jealous Guy: He gets unreasonably angry at "Yuuhi" for eyeballing Touko, and then gets jealous when she seems to show kindness to a completely random stranger.
• Disguised in Drag: Played with. Genjirou had asked Akane to just give him a human size to infiltrate the school, but she decided to also change his gender, because she's Akane. The result was "Ryokuenzaka Yumi".
• The Ditz: His quirks and behaviour make it obvious that his daughter inherited his brain.
• Face of a Thug: His pale skin, Monochromatic Eyes, big scar and massive beard don't give him the most friendly look. Being twice the size of any human doesn't exactly help.
• Face–Heel Turn: In the final stretch of the manga he teams up with Principal Shirayuki and works with her to try and expose the school's non-human students. His reasoning seems to be a combination of wanting to protect non-humans from the pain he suffered, and because he doesn't think humans could possibly accept them. After he's proven wrong on both counts, he admits defeat and gives Asahi permission to marry Youko.
• Friendly Neighbourhood Vampire: In spite of his imposing appearance, he's this.
• Glamour Failure: By his third year of high-school, his nature had become too apparent to hide (notably because he had become more than 3 meters tall), and he had to leave the school. He doesn't want his daughter to have the same trauma. It's later revealed that he only became this tall after going Berserk when he could no longer control his Blood Lust and bit Touko's neck in front of everyone.
• Happily Married: He's very happy with Touko, but there are some hints that their story hasn't always been smooth sailing, as he often talks about how Asahi might regret getting too close to Youko. And we still don't know the details of what happened after he was exposed as a vampire at school.
  • We finally find out after Youko's secret is exposed. Apparently, Touko had to leave behind all her family and friends she ever had just to stay with him after his secret was found out. It didn't help that all his other friends abandoned him out of fear.
• Henpecked Husband: His large and rather imposing figure scares Asahi and Aizawa when they first meet him. However, once his wife shows up, it's pretty apparent who's really the one in charge. To give an idea, in chapter 95 she scares him shitless by just sitting and smiling silently.
• Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: He towers over his wife. Along with everyone else. However up until his third year in high school, he could pass for a human. Then he gained another meter in their senior year.
• Hypocritical Humor: He refers to Youko as a dope, but he's not exactly a brain trust himself.
• I Have No Son!: A flashback in Chapter 176 shows that Genjirou's father practically disowned him for wanting to attend high school and for seeing humans as something other than cattle.
• I Just Want to Be Normal: Chapter 176 gives him some backstory, showing that he wanted to attend a normal high school so he could get out and meet friends instead of spending his life locked away in a remote castle like all the other vampires. Near the end of the chapter he reflects that maybe what he really wanted was to be human...tragically, he realizes his just as his vampire powers go out of control, turning him into a terrifying bat monster.
• Ironic Echo: In chapter 113, Akane tells him that adults need to show unwavering support for their children's love life… before showing she's no better than him in that regard. In an unusual sarcastic moment, Genjirou throws her line right back at her face a minute later.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In high school, he was boisterous, arrogant, overprotective of his girlfriend, and made jokes at the expense of his friends... but kindly offered to show "Kuromiya" around on his first day and lent him some cash for lunch.
• Kimono Is Traditional: He's always seen wearing traditional Japanese clothing, giving the impression of a Yakuza boss.
• Like Father, Like Daughter: Youko may get her looks from her mother, but she gets her ditziness and Kansai dialect from her father. And as the time travel arc reveals, she also got her stomach rumbling from him too.
• Necktie Headband: He sports this when he is drunk... despite not wearing a tie normally.
• Paper-Thin Disguise: During the sports festival, he somehow gets away with just wearing a luchador mask. Well, Youko doesn't recognize him at least.
• Pointy Ears: Which no one ever found strange when he was in school apparently.
• Scars Are Forever: Has a scar on his forehead given to him by Akane, because he ate one of her macaroons.
• Tsundere: Towards his daughter. He keeps on insisting that he doesn't care for what she does, yet flies to her in a hurry if he thinks anything happened to her (or is happening between her and Asahi).
  • At the end of the vacation arc, Asahi tells Youko that he's sure Genjirou does care about her, but is too stubborn and proud to openly admit it. This conversation happens because Genjirou was apparently chasing down their car shaking his fist, but Asahi points out (and the others agree) that he's actually waving goodbye to her.
  • Some bonus chapters show he's this towards Asahi, too. He's not liking Asahi's relationship with Youko, but is otherwise quite fond of the boy, especially after he found out that Ryokuenzaka Yumi was really Genjirou. It may go even further after Genjirou seemingly realized that a time-traveling Asahi was "Yuuhi Kuromiya", the classmate who tried to protect his secret back in high school.
• What the Hell, Hero?: When he reveals himself as an ally of Shirayuki's, both Asahi and Karen call him out, asking how he could possibly work with the woman who destroyed his life and who wants to likewise destroy the lives of countless other non-human students at the school. All he says is that their goals aren't so different.
• Write What You Know/Write Who You Know: In-Universe. In one 4koma strip, Asahi finds out that Genjirou's a published novelist. His supposedly fictional novel is titled "Raising a Little Vampire Day-by-Day".
• Younger Than They Look: Despite having the beard of a 70-year-old Confuscian philosopher, he's only about 38.

Touko Shiragami

Youko's mother, much more relaxed than her husband, who has kept a mischievous personality. More often than not, she's the carer for her husband's antics, and alongside Akari, one of the few people that keeps Akane in check too.

• Beware the Nice Ones: She's friendly and easygoing most of the time. When Genjirou takes his antics too far, however...
• Cheshire Cat Grin: Anyone who's able to terrify a giant vampire by just smiling silently at him can be considered a master of this technique.
• Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Especially during high school, but it seems that her "job" is largely to keep her husband (and sometimes Karen) from exposing their secrets or doing something ridiculous. And she always keeps around a set of vampire-slaying gear just in case his antics go a bit too far.
• Date Peepers: Being the Shipper on Deck she is, she spies on Asahi and Youko's first date in chapter 100, along with Akane. Through a TV in the aquarium's staff-room. Full with Large-Ham Announcer commentary.
• Hidden Depths: Behind her kind and friendly housewife demeanour, she occasionally shows a slightly more wicked side, which includes spying on Youko and Asahi along with Akane, and being a tad too eager for an "accident" to happen.
• Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: She's as tall as her husband's legs. However, they were about the same size up until the second year of high school.
• Kimono Is Traditional: It both adds to her "gentle mother" image and to the contrast with her much less pure aspects. She's never seen wearing anything else either.
• Odd Friendship: Gets along pretty well with Akane, apparently. Though they're not above taking shots at each other, as seen in the sports festival.
• Perpetual Smiler: Rarely seen without a gentle or mischievous smile on her face. Which occasionally serves as a Cheshire Cat Grin.
• Secret-Keeper: For her husband during their high school days. She failed, as Genjirou's vampiric features have become too apparent to hide.
• Shipper on Deck: Unlike her husband, she is very excited at the idea of her daughter spending a night in a room with Asahi. And blames the poor guy after nothing happens.
• Strong Family Resemblance: At least when she was young, she looked a lot like Youko (even moreso in the anime).
• Yamato Nadeshiko: Their house looks very traditional, and she harbours all the elements of the trope. She still has a tight grasp on her husband.

Shiho's human mother, she's a legendary woman known as the queen of perverts, who has made the noses of countless men bleed.

• Aroused by Their Voice: Just her voice on the phone is enough to give Asahi a massive nosebleed. This can be a problem: Shiho implies that a boy she liked was knocked out by it when she was a kid (though whether it truly happened or she just made it up is unclear).
• The Dreaded: Rin shivers at her mere presence because of her tremendous pervert aura.
• Extreme Omnisexual: She's reputed as a woman who would love anyone, which shows especially in how she willingly bore a werewolf's child. In a later chapter, she shows up to a zoo to practice seducing lions.
• The Faceless: She is mentioned several times and even present in the sports festival arc, but doesn't appear until volume 9. And when she does finally appear, her face is hidden by bangs and Censor Steam. Chapter 127 actually has a fairly good look at her face, and even then her eyes are closed because she's smiling over the fact that Shiho's friends stayed with her even after learning her secret.
• Head-Turning Beauty: Just being male and in the same room as her is enough to endanger your blood supply.
• Living Legend: She's treated as one (among perverts at least), and that puts an enormous pressure on Shiho who feels overshadowed.
• Only Known by Their Nickname: Only her "title" has been given so far.
• Perpetual Smiler: Part of the pervert package, you could say.
• Say It with Hearts: She isn't Shiho's mother for nothing.
• Shameless Fanservice Girl: She never wears anything when she appears. It's somewhat subverted when in later chapters she points out to Shiho that shame and embarrassment are an important factor in being sexy.
• Stealth Mentor: While it seems like she mostly just shows up out of nowhere to flaunt her sexiness, there are a lot of hints that she's looking out for her daughter, encouraging Shiho to get a boyfriend and experience real love. In Chapter 127, she congratulates Shiho on finding friends who can accept her for who really is even after they find out about Shiro. At one point she even says she's a mother first and a pervert second, something Shiho has a hard time believing.
• Take Our Word for It: What does Shiho's mother the super pervert do? In the early volumes, she was always too surrounded by amazed guys to even catch a glimpse. A few words we don't even hear are enough to get Asahi to erupt in a nosebleed after being completely unimpressed by Akane, Youko and Akari trying their best to be sexy in front of him.
• Verbal Tic: Same as her daughter, except instead of saying ん~, she says んん~.

Mei Kuromine

Asahi's little sister, who like her brother finds herself surrounded by weirdos in her class. Mainly known for her sharp tongue.

• Ascended Extra: She appeared in exactly five mundane panels in the first 100 chapters (plus a few one-panel flashbacks), yet she ranked higher than Asahi in the popularity poll, somehow. But after chapter 105 she's finally part of the regular cast.
• Bad Liar: She seems to be just as bad at it as her brother, though she has the fortune of not being a Cosmic Plaything.
• Brutal Honesty: She admits that it's one of her flaws, after immediately telling Yuka that Asahi has a girlfriend.
• Distaff Counterpart: In role, personality and tics, she's pretty much a female, slightly more serious Asahi.
• Forehead of Doom: Someone emphasized by her headband. Ironically, she's the one making fun of Asahi's forehead.
• Gamer Chick: Going by chapter 148, she can wipe the floor with her brother at Straight Fighter. Even Oka, who's much better than Asahi, is no match for her.
• Internal Reveal: She finally gets let in on all the weirdness going on near the very end of the series (Chapter 191 out of 196). She takes it really well, pointing out that after that insane sports day, she already had some idea that there were shenanigans going on.
• The Matchmaker: She introduces Yuka to Asahi, so that Yuka can confess her feelings to him. At least that was the plan, but then Oka appears, and Yuka falls for him instead.
• Straight Man: Plays this to the other three members of her group, and boy does she have a lot to deal with.
• Tsundere: Lampshaded in chapter 134, where her friends mock her typical tsundere behaviour towards her brother. It goes both ways, incidentally.
• Unrequited Love: She has feelings for Oka, but she knows all too well he loves Mikan − much like Oka knows all too well that Mikan loves Asahi.
• What Does She See in Him?: She's utterly baffled by the idea that anyone could be attracted to her brother. In Chapter 191 she outright asks Youko what she sees in Asahi, to her surprise and his annoyance.

Yuka Momochi

A rather loony and sentimental girl who falls in Love at First Sight with… pretty much every older boy she comes across. She has a subtle, very well hidden secret.

• Ambiguously Bi: In chapter 118, she thinks Mikan is running after her for a love confession… and doesn't seem to dislike the attention, almost "reciprocating" it for a second. She also gets the usual Crush Filter when Mei calls her "cute" in the volume 13 omake.
• Anguished Declaration of Love: She is about to do this to Asahi in her introduction chapter… but then she falls for Okada who was just passing by.
• Animal Motifs: Fitting for a ninja, she has a giant bald eagle as her familiar and as her time machine.
• Beat Them at Their Own Game: In her Info Dump, she explains that the Resistance recruited her because she's descended from the first Charismatic Pervert, figuring they could fight pervert power with pervert power.
• Cloud Cuckoolander: Mei admits that she gets only about 20% of what Yuka says.
• Crash-Into Hello: A high altitude example. Her first appearance has her crashing into Asahi when jumping from roof to roof, while he is transported by Rin's dragon. And yes, she was eating a toast.
  • In chapter 123, she bumps into Shima, and you have the usual build-up to a Love at First Sight until you turn the page and see Yuka with an ice-cold expression, while Shima's expression is nothing short of a rape-face. With a Gaussian Girl effect.
• Crush Filter: She sees every man she meets through this.
• Everyone Knew Already: In chapter 111, she is worried and wonders why everyone has guessed she was a ninja, even though she doesn't have the stealth characteristic of ninjas.
• Expy: Of Sakuranomiya Sakura from Sakura Discord. They're both Rose Haired Genki Girls who are at least a bit ditzy. One might be disappointed reading Sakura Discord after this and not seeing Nomiya wearing a Fuuma Shuriken around her waist.
• Highly-Visible Ninja: For some strange reason, Mei isn't all that surprised when she learns what Yuka is. In Chapter 111, she laments that all her classmates figured it out; Asahi points out that walking around with a Fuuma Shuriken on your back is kind of a giveaway.
• In-Universe Nickname: Akane and Mikan call her "iroboke ninja" (love-smitten ninja), because of, well.
• Kid from the Future: Possibly, considering her hair decs, her Modesty Shorts, the weapon she openly wears… and her occasional references to the future. In chapter 107 she's also shown to be friends with Rin, the other kid from the future. Chapter 115's Wham Line about Asahi being her "Grandpa" confirms it, and chapter 118, where she accidentally takes Mikan with her in the future, nails the point. Chapter 124 reveals that Asahi's only an Honorary Uncle, and her actual grandparents are Shiho and Shimada.
• Lamarck Was Right: Her grandmother was a pervert and her grandfather was a skirt-chaser, handily explaining her Love Freak nature.
• Love at First Sight: Her first shtick when she's introduced. While the series puts the emphasis on romances that gradually develop as the characters spend time with their crush and learn to know him/her, Yuka's character pokes fun at this trope.
• Red Baron: The "Scorching Stripper" as she uses hot steam to make the perverts' exposure ineffective.
• Rose-Haired Sweetie: A ditzy and over-the-top variant. It's even in her name ("momoiro" means "pink").
• Smitten Teenage Girl: Falls for Asahi when she meets him on her way to school. Then when she is about to confess to him, Okada shows up and she falls for him instead. In the span of 18 pages.
• Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: She falls in love with every guy around her age that she runs into...except Shimada. It may have something to do with the fact that he's her grandfather.

Sen

The boy of the group, he usually makes vaguely perverted comments while always having the same deadpan expression.

• Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: He starts to have this dynamic with Mei in chapter 116. He makes some perverted/masochistic comment, she tells him to go to hell. It turns out he enjoys being insulted by her a lot.
• Chivalrous Pervert: Going by chapter 133, it apparently depends on whether he's wearing his glasses or not. When he isn't, he acts like a smooth casanova, even calling Youko a "stunning beauty" (to Youko's immense delight). When he puts them on, he suddenly starts spewing out weird perverted lines. It may have something to do with the fact that his glasses are inhabited by the perverted God of Fortune, Fukutarou.
• Double Entendre: He sure is enthusiastic to eat a meal made by two young maidens who "shed their bodily fluids".
  Mei: Ever heard of the word "sweat", ya damn pervert?
• Given Name Reveal: A fairly important one, because he shares it with another member of the cast: Kiryuuin.
• Informed Attribute: As a vampire hunter, he's supposedly a competent fighter, but didn't get a chance to show off his skills.
• Katanas Are Just Better: While Rin has a sword and Yuka has a giant shuriken, he has this. The school has very lax rules regarding weapons, it seems. Also, his can turn into a flower bouquet.
• Love Triangle: Played for Laughs. He nonchalantly talks as if himself and Asahi were rivals for Youko's heart, ignoring the fact Asahi and Youko are already going out at that point.
• Mr. Exposition: Downplayed. Because of his knowledge about vampires and their weaknesses, he occasionally gives some explanations on the matter to Asahi and/or Youko.
• Only One Name: At first. We only learn his full-name about 30 chapters after his introduction. Kiryuuin Sen, Vampire Hunter.
• Opaque Nerd Glasses: It makes his constant deadpan face somewhat creepier.
• Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: He tends to use elaborate or pompous terms, even when what he talks about is hardly elegant.
• Wacky Marriage Proposal: What he does about five seconds after meeting Youko.

Saki Minagawa

The class representative of Mei and Yuka's class, she's a succubus who happens to completely lack any sex-appeal. She nonetheless wants to restore the honor of her race, which fell into disgrace after the sudden rise of the Charismatic Pervert.

• Aborted Arc: Her character arc about wanting to defeat the Charismatic Pervert and restore the honor of Succubi is mentioned once in her introduction chapter, but never actually developed. Probably because the last third of the series is already quite packed plot-wise and the author didn't really find a way to fit her in.
• Big Ol' Eyebrows: She has rather thick eyebrows, probably to emphasise her falsely stern side.
• Breast Expansion: As succubi draw their power from men's nosebleeds, this happens temporarily when she drinks some.
• Mercury's Wings: A common trait of her species. They don't seem to have any practical use, but they visibly grow when her chest gets larger.
• The Rival: Becomes this to Youko after challenging her to a sexy pose duel. They fight to a draw, but only because both of their Pervert Powers are non-existent. Still, they acknowledge each other's value, starting the lousiest rivalry ever seen.
• Running Gag: "Individual perceptions may vary." A notice that appears every time she's knocked away by someone's (not-)tremendous pervert aura.
• Succubi and Incubi: She's supposed to be a succubus , but doesn't really have any sex appeal. It says a lot when she's amazed by Youko's Pervert Power of all things.

Other

Ryou Aizawa

Nagisa's brother, who came to Earth to check on her. In a female body. He's a rather lazy, hypocritical miser, and prone to take advantage of others (or at least try) if it can get him out of his Perpetual Poverty. Due to his laziness, he is unwittingly responsible for his sister's personality.

• Adapted Out: All of his appearances in Nagisa's early flashbacks have been removed in the anime, and his introduction chapters have been completely skipped.
• Attractive Bent-Gender: He tries to use this to his advantage when Shimada of all people becomes attracted to "her". This being being Ryou, and this being Jitsu wa, it backfires soon enough.
• Big Brother Mentor: Subverted. He often gives advice to his sister, but he's basically just making crap up. He completely fails to follow his own advice, and is really a lazy bum.
• "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word: He steals food from the cooking classroom to eat, but he isn't doing anything reprehensible, no sir.
  Ryou: Don't be mistaken, this isn't stealing. This is a volunteer activity to expose the light security of the school.
• Broken Pedestal: Early in the story, Nagisa thinks that her brother is a great role model. Once she hears that he picked a female body to infiltrate girl’s baths and that he’s a lazy bum, life becomes hell for him.
• Butt-Monkey: Absolutely nothing ever goes right for him, all of it well deserved. On top of being in Perpetual Poverty, he has to deal with Shima's, er, attentions (when he isn't manipulating him anyway), and his far more competent sister usually wants nothing to do with him to the point that later in the series, he doesn't even learn she left Earth and ditched him there until it's been a few days.
• Casanova Wannabe: According to his sister, his antenna often glows and he's always going after the ladies, but none of them ever reciprocated.
• Cute Ghost Girl: Ryou's outer appearance. Except the person inside is a guy, and there's nothing cute about him.
• Hitodama Light: Floating flames are produced by his alien technology to make his disguise as a Cute Ghost Girl more convincing.
• Humanoid Alien: Like his sister, naturally.
• Mobile-Suit Human: His "outside unit" is a woman. So that he can get in the women's bath easily.
• Obsessed with Food: Since he doesn't have a house nor money, his chapters always involve him stealing food or using someone as a sucker to eat. Why a robotic body functionning on a battery needs to eat so much is anyone's guess. Though one can argue his OUTER body is robotic, but the alien INSIDE still needs food! On the other hand, he's usually shown making off with enough food to make several meals for a full-sized person. How much food can a six-inch tall alien eat?
• Only in It for the Money: He apparently agreed to go to Earth because he was told he would be paid.
• Out of Focus: Like Shirou, his appearances rapidly become very scarce. But the author makes sure he suffers in every single one of them.

The Gods of Fortune

Fuku-chan, Fukunosuke, Fukutarou and Fukuzou

Fuku-chan voiced by: Chiaki Shimogama

Talking spirits that inhabit glasses for some reason. The one inhabiting Mikan's glasses - a gift from Asahi that she cherishes - is called Fuku-chan. The others are Fukunosuke, the Administrator of Fortune, Fukutarou, the Encyclopedia of Fortune, and Fukuzou, the Great Professor of Fortune. They usually use pigeons as transportation and they're absolutely terrible at their jobs.

• Adaptational Early Appearance: While the manga introduces him in quite late (around chapter 25), Fuku-chan is present right from the start in the anime − although strangely he doesn't really do anything during this extra-time, outside of talking with Mikan a few times.
• Ambiguous Gender: People usually refer to Fuku-chan as male, but they still use "watashi" and the anime gives them a cute girly voice, so it's probably up to the readers to decide. Assuming Gods of Fortune even have a gender in the first place.
• Animate Inanimate Object: They're supposed to be tsukumogami, gods that reside in objects.
• Combined Energy Attack: They tried this once when Fuku-chan wasn't there yet, to try and grant Akari's wish... and failed. They try again with Fuku-chan added, but are interrupted by Mikan this time.
• Cool Shades: Fukunosuke inhabits a pair of those, fitting his Big Brother Mentor role toward Fuku-chan.
• Covert Pervert: Fukutarou admits to be this behind his pompous façade. Is it any surprise that he turns out to be Sen's glasses?
• Meaningful Name: "Fuku" means luck, fortune, or happiness. Probably doubles as an Ironic Name, considering they cause someone to embarrass themselves whenever they intervene.
• Opaque Nerd Glasses: Fukutarou's body, going with his title of "Encyclopedia".
• Unwanted Assistance: Everytime Fuku-chan tries to "help" Mikan he ends up either getting in her way or embarassing her, which makes her call him "God of Misfortune". The other three are just as useful.

The "Box Girl" (WALKING SPOILER)

A mysterious girl who first appears before Mikan to make an ominous prediction. She's actually Nagisa Aizawa from 10 years in the future.

• Did You Just Scam Cthulhu?: She manages to (inadvertently) completely dupe Akane twice. She's not too thrilled about that.
• Expy: She's very similar to Archer/Heroic Spirit Emiya from Type-Moon's Fate franchise: a bitter, jaded future version of a major character who now sees their past self as a naive idiot and seeks to destroy their idealism, and ends up conceding defeat in the face of their younger self's determination. The biggest difference is that Future Aizawa is only pretending to be the villain in order to strengthen her younger self's resolve, whereas in Fate Archer really had given up on his idealism.
• The Faceless: Her face is covered by a "box with twintails" (as some readers described it), and she would look completely ridiculous if she wasn't so mysterious.
• Girlish Pigtails: Her box has holes with ribbons through them on the flaps, making them look like this when looked at straight on.
• Good All Along: It's ultimately revealed that her motivation was ensuring that a bad future didn't come to pass, and she was merely playing the villain to motivate her younger self. Later on she returns and warns Asahi that in her time, his relationship was destroyed, and states that she wants to help him protect Youko no matter what.
• Heads I Win, Tails You Lose: Regardless of the outcome of the fight between herself and her past self, she benefits in at least some way from the outcome.
• I Hate Past Me: She refers to Present!Nagisa as "Rookie" and constantly talks down to her, and just expects her younger self to go along with whatever she says without actually bothering to explain anything. Chapter 160 finally gives an answer: Her attempts to be an ambassador between their worlds failed, resulting in her planet invading Earth — which, consequently, destroyed her relationships with her friends. In order to keep her past self from making the same mistakes, she wants to kill her and take over her life. Except that was all a lie − Nagisa did succeed, but her future self's motivation is elsewhere: to prevent Youko from going berserk and disappearing.
• Laser-Guided Amnesia: Among other lies in chapter 160, she claims that she deliberately erased her own memories of her time on Earth, seeing her actions then were "confusion and weakness". Present!Nagisa is horrified at the idea that she could ever so casually throw away that part of her life.
• Mysterious Waif: She appears literally out of nowhere at the end of chapter 114, drops a Wham Line about Asahi not marrying Youko in the future, and said future depending on Mikan's choice, and disappears just as suddenly. She doen't show up again until another 40 chapters.
• Oracular Urchin: At first she seems to be yet another Kid from the Future or some kind of seer; in any case she apparently knows what happens 50 years from now. Turns out she's not an urchin though.
• Paper-Thin Disguise: When she comes back in the final arc, no one, not even Youko, is fooled by her disguise because of the way she talks. Even though she finds a superhero codename ('I, Za One') that totally doesn't give her away.
• Red Herring: One would assume that the design of her... err, box reflects on her actual appearance. In fact, she looks like regular Aizawa but with longer hair.
• Self-Duplication: She apparently mastered the cloning jutsu within the next ten years.
• Slasher Smile: Oh, BIG TIME! She sports this when talking about her plan to kill the Present!Nagisa and take her place in front of Asahi. Though it turns out it was just very good acting.
• Suicide by Cop: She plays up her villainous qualities to force Present!Nagisa to have more resolve for (what she claims is) the coming alien invasion.
• The Tease: The least you can say is that she has become quite a bit more forward in her flirting with Asahi, to her past self's horror. She has also developped a sense of humor, incredibly enough.
• Walking Spoiler: Once her identity is revealed, she becomes this.

Shirayuki (WALKING SPOILER)

The enigmatic former principal of Morobare High, and apparently Akane's enemy. She's the first "antagonist" of the series who mostly has her head on straight.

• An Ice Person: Claims to be a Yuki-Onna, and her body is indeed mentioned to be unnuaturally cold. In Chapter 189, it's revealed that she's actually been a ghost for some time, and seeing Akane's dream of peace between humans and monsters allowed her to move on to the afterlife with a smile on her face. This utterly shocks both Akane and Karen, neither of whom even realized Shirayuki was dead until that moment, and they both yell at each other for not picking up on it.
• Affably Evil: When she talks with Asahi in the past arc, she turns out to be quite amicable and easy to talk to. It's mostly a facade though, and it doesn't take long for her ill intentions to show.
• A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: Her relationship with Akane; she once believed whole-heartedly in Akane's ideal of humans and non-humans getting along but was jaded by tragedy and not only turned away from this path, but actively sought to destroy it.
• Big Bad: As of the final story arc, whereafter ensuring that Asahi can't protect Genjirou's secret in the past, she turns up in the present, takes out Akane, and assumes control of the school with the clear intent of exposing the non-human students to the world as punishment for "debasing themselves" by befriending humans.
• Both Sides Have a Point: Shirayuki discusses this when explaining her backstory. As a human child, she had lived in a village where humans and non-humans lived in peace. This changed when several villagers imprisoned a non-human child in a cage to display as a freak show to raise money. Shirayuki was disgusted by this action and was heartbroken when the other non-human children rejected her due to perceived association. However, the present-day Shirayuki acknowledges that the money raised from this act ensured that nobody in the village died over an exceptionally harsh winter. As such, Shiroyuki admits that she can't really call anyone in the situation a villain; unfortunately, she instead decided that the best course of action was to keep humans and non-humans separate.
• Chekhov's Gunman: She's briefly mentioned by Akane in chapter 136, who calls her "nasty/creepy". Her appearance in chapter 153's flashback seems to confirm this.
• Early-Bird Cameo: Appears in a single flashback panel in chapter 153, before being properly introduced 20 chapters later.
• Everyone Has Standards: Played for Laughs in Chapter 183. At the end of 182, Youko finally learned that Yumi-sensei is her father Genjirou "crossdressing". This chapter starts off on the next day and we're told that Shirayuki took pity on Genjirou and actually called off her evil plans so he could go home.
• Evil Laugh: Gives quite an epic one at the end of chapter 175, when it becomes obvious that Genjirou won't be able to hold out his bloodthirst for much longer.
• Face Framed in Shadow: The top of her face is obscured on her first appearance, which makes her quite ominous in a different way than the series' usual "scary" faces.
• Ghostly Chill: She has a chilling effect on her surroundings, which lent credibility to her claim of being a yuki-onna.
• Knight of Cerebus:
  • As soon as she appears in chapter 172, the tone rapidly gets much more somber, gradually eclipsing comedy for a while. Interestingly though, she doesn't actually do anything other than diverting Asahi's attention for a few minutes when Genjirou is about to break.
  • However in Chapter 178 she directly became one since she attacks Akane putting her out of combat.
• I Warned You: When Genjirou went berserk in the past, Shirayuki told Akane that she should have known what was going to happen if she kept on supporting them.
• Nothing Personal: She wholly, and apologetically, claims that she has no beef with Youko, but that she's just an unfortunate victim in her plans; her actual problems lie with Akane and Asahi, whose beliefs about humans and non-humans are in opposition to her worldview.
• Only One Name: Justified, as she was originally a child from a poor family in Edo Japan, where family names for those who weren't samurai weren't a thing yet.
• Only Sane Man: Played for Laughs when Akane points out that, contrary to the previous "spies" Asahi had to face (Shirou, Karen and Yumi), Shirayuki actually has a functionning brain. However, it's also decidedly not comedic in that she's a Knight of Cerebus and her competence makes her a legitimate threat to the cast.
• Pet the Dog: In chapter 184 when confronted by Youko, but Youko's stomach growling interrupts her retorts, they call a truce and she makes Youko a nice small meal in the home economics room while they have a civilized chat.
• Self-Disposing Villain: Attempted and defied. After Akane defeats her she tries to jump off the school's rooftop, but Youko flies out of the classroom (revealing herself as a vampire in the process) and catches her.
• Super Supremacist: Subverted. She says repeatedly that non-humans who want to mingle with humans are "throwing away their pride", but when she has an honest talk with Youko in chapter 184, it's clear that her priority is to protect non-humans from human hostility. It's less a matter of superiority or inferiority than a matter of oppressors and victims.
  Shirayuki: Times may have changed, but the nature of people has not, human or not.
• Tragic Bigot: She was a child in the Edo period who lived in a village where humans and non-humans co-existed; however, the humans locked one of the non-human children in a cage and exhibited him as part of a freak show so they could make the money needed to survive a harsh winter. The other non-human children acted like Shirayuki had something to do with this and abandoned her, which convinced her that Akane's dream of peaceful co-existence was impossible.
• Tyrant Takes the Helm: At the end of chapter 178 she incapacitates Akane in such a severe degree, she usurps the position of Principal back. She then brings in reporters and supernatural investigators to "look into the school secrets" ramping up the fear in the non-human population of the school students they might be outed.
• Verbal Tic: She talks politely but repeats herself, which turns phrases that would be complimentary into biting sarcasm.

Tesaki

A former pupil of Akane, who occasionally assists her in her antics. A passive, older mustachioed man.

• The Bartender: It might be his "real" job, as he is seen serving Akane and other customers in a bar while shaking a cocktail in chapter 108. Also, said customers are pairs of eyeglasses.
• Deadpan Snarker: He's regularly slipping surreptitiously sarcastic comments with the same innocuous smile.
• Meaningful Name: His name literally means "underling". Fitting as he's Akane's assistant.
• Only One Name: He's Tesaki. Just… Tesaki.
• Perpetual Smiler: The carefree smile he has on the picture never leaves his face. That's literally the only expression he ever has.
• Recurring Extra: Nobody knows who he is or why he helps Akane, and he has no bearing on the plot, but he sometimes pops up, just because. The first time as a cooking teacher (chapter 44), the second time in an Imagine Spot (chapter 73), the third time as Akari's "agent" (chapter 82), and on several other occasions in later chapters.

Senpai

Akari's elder colleague in the maid café she works in. A cutesy and bubbly girl, she helps her walk down the path of cuteness.

• Genki Girl: Par for the course when you work at a maid café. How much of this is an act is unknown, though.
• Girliness Upgrade: She went through one by becoming a maid, encouraging Akari to follow the same path.
• Girlish Pigtails: Goes with the whole "cute maid" atire.
• Idiot Hair: It fits the image she wants to give… but maybe not her true personality (see Troll below).
• Japanese Delinquent: Used to be one like Akari, much to the latter's surprise. And she's apparently strong enough to hold her down.
• No Name Given: She is only known as "Senpai", even in her character description in the magazine chapters.
• Perpetual Smiler: Much like Tesaki, she never drops her beaming smile, to the point it can be a little creepy.
• Rose-Haired Sweetie: That's the idea, but her "cutesy" act is so extreme that she ends up emitting a rather scary aura.
• The Stoic: A rather strange mix of this and Genki Girl. She's always smiling and upbeat but nothing fazes her.
• Troll: In chapter 73 she accepts an order from Akane and puts it on Asahi and co's tab. She then asks Asahi to pat Akari's head, again as asked by Akane, saying it's on the "secret menu".
