Heartwarming / My Monster Secret

Go To

  • An often forgotten but heartwarming scene is near the end of chapter 18, when Oka and Mikan discuss Asahi's tendency to "fall in love" easily with girls more capable than he is. Mikan then notes that, this time, he may have truly fallen with Shiragami, with a gentle smile. There isn't a sliver of jealousy or bitterness, only benevolence in her tone − which is quite rare coming from her, especially knowing her own feelings for Asahi.
  • Chapter 55 has Youko hitting Asahi on the head and starting to cry when he says "who cares about me!", as she is tired of seeing him put himself in danger for her sake. It's also when they go on First-Name Basis for good.
  • In chapter 80, Nagisa is about to give up on confessing and basically run away. Asahi's reaction? Run after her, grab her arm and encourage her to go through with her confession, as he already knows from experience why she called him.
  • Chapter 90 with Nagisa's farewell. All of it. Until the last page.
  • Chapter 111 has several; to give the set-up, in Chapter 110 the seniors are tasked with filling out a form that talks about what they want to do after they graduate. Asahi can't figure anything out (except his childhood dream of being a superhero), and Youko won't tell him anything, despite the fact that they want to follow the same career path so they can stay together. At the end of the chapter, Akane shows up telling Asahi that now is the time for him to become a superhero, which leads to Chapter 111...
    • To start, Akane explains to Asahi that there's been an upswing in "unusual" students at the school in the last couple of years, and that their secrets are only a small part of who they are; they need someone they can talk to honestly about their concerns without risking their secrets, and she wants Asahi to be their "superhero". The fact that Akane, normally the most selfish person in the series, actually cares about the well-being of her students is pretty amazing.
      • Earlier, she shows Asahi a picture of Youko, then one of a mermaid, asking him to identify each. Afterwards, she asks "When I showed you this first picture, why didn't you say 'a vampire' instead of 'Shiragami Youko'?" Simply put, Asahi sees Youko as a person rather than a "monster", and Akane did this to have him understand that the other "unusual" students are people too.
    • After a failed attempt at counseling Yuka, Saki comes in and laments that she can't have friends because she has to hide her true nature. This makes Asahi think back to Youko's isolation, and he encourages her to go ahead and make friends (quoted below), which clearly affects Saki as she thanks him.
"You can make friends. You want to, right? In that case...I mean, I don't want to say anything irresponsible, but...Look! If there's something they can do to help with your secret, they'll help you. And they'll be there if you need someone to talk to!"
    • After he's done, Asahi meets up with Youko and they walk home together. He tells her about what happened, and how he's finally realized what he wants to do with his life. Youko gets a huge smile on her face and Glomps Asahi, saying that that was the same thing she wanted to do, meaning they got their wish after all.
      • And while they're having this discussion, Akane and Genjirou watch them from the school's rooftop. Akane remarks that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree; just like her father once did, Youko wants to be a teacher and help out those students who have secrets to protect. Adding to the heartwarming, she refers to Asahi as Youko's "very own hero" and implies that his guarding her secret is what inspired her to take that path.
      • Adding to that is the clear implication that Genjirou originally wanted to be a teacher at the school as well. He ended up getting his wish, though in a somewhat roundabout way.
  • Chapter 115 centers on Asahi and Youko being on the verge of break-up (or not) for a mundane and stupid misunderstanding. You'd think Mikan would jump on the occasion to make a move, right? Wrong. She does everything she can to make Asahi realize his mistake and make up with Youko, because she doesn't want them to break up. Not for such a silly reason, at least.
  • Chapter 136's flashback about Touko and Akane is semi-comical yet highlights their Odd Friendship in a very touching way. Akane accepted to help protect "Shiragami's" secret in exchange for a "puny ice-cream", in her own words. More than 20 years later, she's still holding to her promise by protecting Youko's secret. Despite what she says, it's quite obvious she does it not because of some kind of "demon bargain" but because she's Touko's child.
  • The last arc of the series is like a fully automatic heartwarming Gatling gun, firing off feels at an insane rate.
    • Chapter 188: Youko reveals her secret and, just like he promised, Genjirou comes to take her away. What does Asahi do? With the encouragement and help of his friends, he chases Genjirou down in mid-air (with said friends, including Akane, acting as Stepping Stones in the Sky) and asks for permission to marry Youko.
      • Making this one even sweeter, when Genjirou starts flying off and everything seems hopeless, it's Sen of all people who gets Asahi to act, saying that if he truly has the resolve to stay by Youko's side no matter what, then he can't give up regardless of what's happened.
    • Chapter 189: Genjirou rejects Asahi's request, saying that humans and non-humans can never co-exist and telling him to look and see the horrified faces of all the people who now know Youko is a vampire. And then we see a speech balloon with "Actually, I am...". And then another. And another. All throughout the school, the non-human students confess their secrets to their classmates. The "special needs" students whom Asahi had protected from Shirayuki step up to repay his kindness, and his friends like Shiho, Nagisa, and others join in. And throughout the school, the human students are surprised but not afraid and accept their classmates for who they are (in particular, we see a boy telling a girl who revealed herself as a Medusa that he thinks she's super cute). Genjirou is so stunned by all of this (we even get a brief panel showing his original human-like appearance) that he falls to his knees.
      • On top of this, the one who started it all was Mikan, revealing the God of Fortune in her glasses, in an attempt to distract people from what was going on. Fuku-chan asks if she's okay with all this, and she says that all she did was give the others a little push by stepping up and going first.
      • While all of this is going on, Youko's friends Inaba, Matsumoto, and Sasaki are at the window. They call out to her, admitting that they don't quite get what's going on, but she's still the same Youko they called their friend and they want the chance to talk things out with her. Youko understandably tears up.
      • After Genjirou tells Asahi that humans and non-humans can't coexist, Asahi rejects this, saying that Genjirou married Touko. Genjirou furiously replies that Touko had to sacrifice her life with her human family to be him, and that it was very painful for her. He then asks Asahi whether he's willing to make the same sacrifice. It shows not just how fiercely Genjirou loves Touko and was worried for her, but as Asahi also notes, it also means that he was worried for Asahi and what he would have to sacrifice to be with Youko.
      • After this, Touko shows up to speak to Genjirou, who says that after what happened to him, he never thought humans would accept people like him. And then he remembers that there was someone besides Touko who accepted him, "a strange, hero-like human" — Asahi himself, during his trip to the past. Genjirou looks at the sky and gives Asahi permission to marry Youko, all while Touko has a simple, satisfied smile on her face.
      • And to cap it all off, Akane talks to Shirayuki, asking if this was what she wanted to see. It took centuries, but Akane granted her original wish of human-monster co-existence. Shirayuki, with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face, reverts to her original human appearance and fades away into the afterlife.
  • Chapter 191 has Rin and Yuka return to the future, and with words of encouragement from the cast manage to save the world from the Charismatic Pervert II, who ends up being the long-lost Youko, who's vampiric charm powers went out of control in the original timeline. After waiting for so long, she and Asahi are finally able to see each other again in the future.
  • Chapter 193 has Asahi and Youko finally tell Genjirou about the baby, and after some brief comedy he actually takes it pretty well (once he's told it's the product of blood-drinking he understands completely). Then he asks to speak to Asahi alone for a bit, and takes him to a house in the city; it's the house he was renting as part of his "Yumi Ryokuenzaka" identity, and he's "giving" it to them as a graduation present, paying the rent for the four years they'll be in college. He encourages Asahi to work as hard as he can to become a teacher, with a flashback showing how hard he worked at it himself before everything went wrong. Finally, he shows that he's fully aware Asahi was "Yuuhi Kuromiya", gives his approval to the relationship, and calls Asahi by his name for the first time instead of just "brat", welcoming him into the family.
    • Two smaller ones from this chapter: Asahi and Youko already had this conversation with his parents (including all the vampire stuff), and they gave their support to the couple while offering to help out if need be. And near the end of the chapter, Touko quietly remarks that Genjirou is actually very fond of Asahi and is only acting tough to cover the fact that he's really excited about being a grandfather.
  • Chapter 195: The graduation ceremony. As everyone comes up to get their diplomas, Akane has words of encouragement for every single one of them — even "lesser" characters like Youko's friends Sasaki and Inaba. Even Shima, though par for the course it's sillier than everyone else's, with her just saying "You're kinda tolerable when you're looking out for others. However, she also tells Sakurada "Take care of Akari", showing that she's grown up a little herself.
    • After all the diplomas have been handed out, Akane tells everyone to sit back down because she's not done yet — and calls up Karen, Touko, and Genjirou. She says that as principal it's up to her whether or not she accepts their withdrawing from school, and adds that Genjirou's assistant teaching as Yumi Ryokuenzaka was enough to complete the credits he missed back in the day. She's finally granting their original wish: to graduate together. As the final cherry on top, Genjirou and Touko's classmates (attending the ceremony as parents themselves) cheer for their old friends. With tears in their eyes and smiles on their faces, the entire graduating class bows and thanks Akane for looking after them for these last three years.
