The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

From Psychic Force:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Psychic Force as a series is often considered to be "X-Men with more psychic powers and made to be an anime". Cue the Marvel Mangaverse after Psychic Force's run post 1999, which was a heavy hit or miss flop that superficially tried to recreate American superhero classics like Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, and even the titular X-Men themselves with an anime coating upon the rise of anime and manga in the late 1990s, but with absolutely none of the workings, writing, and appeal that got fans yearning for anime in the first place. And even with the fame of Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom series, Psychic Force still reigns supreme as the "anime-styled X-Men series".

I feel that this relies too much on Fan Myopia, as well as being shoehorned in to complain.

[up] We don't need to be so literal with the dragon fire one. The dragon gags could count if they burnt down a studio or something else similar to Kyoto Animation. Otherwise it's indeed just fire in common.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

HilariousInHindsight.Fullmetal Alchemist seems... fine. The only entries I feel are stretches are the ones about One Piece voice actors. However, it's nowhere near long enough to warrant being its own page.

[up][up]Speaking as the one who first added the fire breath point a while back, yeah looking back the connection is a thin one at most, amounting to just "animation studio that worked on a show with a lot of fire-based gags ends up being set on fire." From what I recall, none of those gags entailed setting buildings on fire, intentionally or otherwise.

The point's mirrored on the Anime subpage for FAM too, and in hindsight (wordplay not intended), it was pretty much just a vent edit on my part. I won't be sore with seeing it cut from both of those pages.

From Paris with Love - remember that time when John Travolta tried to become Chow Yun-fat?

Anyway, this line —

- sounds like an easy cut. In context, the film's ending have the hero's Love Interest revealed as a terrorist, and he's forced to kill her before she suicide-bombs an embassey meeting. The Hindsight line seems kinda shoehorned tho...

[up] Yeah, it does seem like one of those examples where the wording implies that those actions only started happening at that point.

Anyway, coming across people questioning an entry related to Our Friend Xiong Xiao Mi, I have to question this entry because it's pretty much the same thing:

From Astonishing X-Men:

In a nutshell, this story is about a psychopatic woman with telepathic powers, who mentally assaults her victims with a series of traumatizing illusions, ultimately manipulating them into setting her free from her prison. The entry is comparing this to the writer's personal life, since he's been accused of psychologically abusing many women throughout his career. I have to ask, is this enough of a connection?

[up][up]No, it's exactly the same thing. Cut it.

[up] It's a little hard to tell since everyone was accused of being some kind of abuser in 2017, but I personally think it's a stretch, and probably a ROCEJ violation to boot. Oh, and the example itself doesn't explain the connection at all.

While removing the Dragon Maid points, I came across this right above it on the Anime & Manga subpage of "Funny Aneurysm" Moment:

  • Sgt. Frog: "Keroro Killed the Radio Star" had one character worriedly comment that their radio show ratings were "dropping faster than an Amy Winehouse song". Funny Take That! then, not so much since July 2011.

If it were a joke about Winehouse dying that mirrored (or at least closely resembled) the circumstances of her actual death, then I think it might apply given what I've observed here, but this point just seems to amount to a retroactive case of Never Speak Ill of the Dead.

Be kind.

There's these entries in The Cyanide & Happiness Show:

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The Stinger to "Baby Factory", in which an alligator tries to pass himself off as a stork (albeit with a very poor disguise) so he could eat one of the babies, can be a little awkward to watch after an incident in Disney World where a 2-year-old boy was snatched and eventually killed by an alligator several months later. This could count IMO.
    • The video "Hello Youtubers" has a girl recording herself for her YouTube channel, only to be interrupted by her sobbing mother coming into to her room and break the news about her fathers' death from a car crash. The girl then proceeds to post the whole recording online and passes it off as a "reaction" video, and later records herself again alongside her father's open casket. This was already pretty pitch black comedy, but can be a lot more cringeworthy after the Logan Paul suicide video controversy in 2018note . The girl's reaction was to mourn, not mock the dead person. Seems like a stretch.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One of Jimmy Wiliams's many scandals was paying with "dirty money" that was up his butt. In 2020, Brazilian senator Chico Rodriguez did exactly this. This article even uses the "dirty money" pun. Maybe it counts, maybe it's a ROCEJ violation?

Tropes as Old as Time, Shoe-horns Right Behind, Beauty and the Beast...

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Elisa and Goliath of Gargoyles once spent Halloween as Belle and the Beast. Gargoyles' equivalent of kissing is stroking their lover's hair. Think of this during the 3 times when the Beast runs his fingers through Belle's hair. — Fan Myopia and Gargoyles Shoe-horn, although since Gargoyles comes after the movie maybe this anecdote can be added under the cartoon's YMMV. IDK
    • About the part of the castle where the rose is located. It's The West Wing. Repeated mentions of the West Wing being forbidden add to this. — Fan Myopia and The West Wing Shoe-horn.
    • In the scene where Belle takes Maurice back to the cottage in the glen after saving him, Lefou is waiting for them outside disguised as a snowman. With the announcement of the casting for Lefou in the live-action remake, that snowman gag may start to seem a bit familiar considering who's playing him... — Not sure, but sounds like Frozen Fan Myopia. Also the snowman gag is actually rather common in cartoons and whatnot
    • Gaston's general character design makes him look like a more cartoonish Clark Kent. He did grow a ponytail a few years later. — Superman Shoe-horn. Just because they both happened to be buff, muscular Top-Heavy Guy(s)
    • Given that the Beast's design incorporates the eyes of a man, the body of a bear, and the tusks of a boar (along with other bits from different critters), he can be described as ManBearPig! Also appropriately, Maurice raving about the Beast to the dismissive townsfolk is reminiscent of Al Gore's similarly erratic obsession with defeating ManBearPig ("I'm super-duper cereal!"). And then everyone realises he was right all along. — South Park shoe-horn. Also the Beast DO NOT resemble MBP the least.
      • More on that, but notice how prominent Gaston's chin is. BallChin-Boy anyone? — One forced South P Ark shoehorn leads to another.
    • With Doctor Who coming back in 2005, the Beast may seem like a Timelord to new Whovians who grew up with the movie. A clip of the 10th Doctor regenerating into his successor incarnation compared to this clip of The Beast's transformation back to his human self at the end of the move says it all & becomes all the more hilarious since this seems to be the default way regenerations happen since the show came back. Also, The Beast's title is reminiscent of The Doctor's since it's not his real name & they change appearances at points. Time will tell if the 2017 live action movie will follow suit. Then we'll have another case of this outside of this website. Not that some fans didn't notice this already. — Dr. Who shoe-horn. Also, this appears to be an anecdote posted 4 years ago, back when the remake is an upcoming film, which the original editor forgot to update after the fact.
    • In Gaston's Villain Song, LeFou sings, "You can ask any Tom, Dick, or Stanley / And they'll tell you whose team they'd prefer to be on!" A bit of a surprise now that LeFou himself was confirmed to be gay in the 2017 remake. — Unsure. Maybe it can work.
    • The fact that after you watch the movie through for the first time and see for yourself that the large, intimidating, baritone-speaking Beast is really just an early twenty-something year old instead of some primordial monster that an unsuspecting bystander like Belle would assume him to be, you can't watch the movie over again without looking at the all of Beast's behavior and identity as just being a spoiled but naively immature teenager just trying to get a cute girl to like him. It can almost have a high school sitcom tone to it when you watch again. — Shoehorn added by some editor who thinks he's funny.
    • With both the ownership of Marvel Comics and the complete buyout of Fox, Disney now has ownership of two characters who go by Beast. — X-Men shoehorn. Also, A Beast in Name and Nature is a common trope.

Would a work featuring a character that resembles a character from a work that would be released after the former be considered Hilarious in Hindsight? I'm pretty sure no, but I'd like to make sure if this entry in YMMV.I Cartoni Dello Zecchino D Oro should be removed or not:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: "Ho Visto un Re" features a jack character who bears a resemblance to Kronk from The Emperor's New Groove. The video came out in April 2000, eight months before the latter's premiere in American theaters alone.

[up][up]While a lot of those entries are shoehorns, the second to last one is pure nonsense, and wouldn't even qualify as a Rewatch Bonus. I may cut some of the shoehorned examples later (if they're still there), but the second to last one is gone.

On Digimon Adventure 02:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Oikawa bears an uncanny resemblance to Tommy Wiseau. Fans noted this, and was even referenced by JesuOtaku.
    • Poromon looks like an Angry Bird.
    • With her purple hair and glasses, Yolei could pass as a gender-flipped Tieria Erde.
    • The D-Terminal, the kids' messaging item that comes with their Digivice, looks a lot like the Nintendo DS.
    • In the Japanese version, one of ninja-themed Shurimon's attack names includes "Konoha." Neil Kaplan, who voiced the character in the dub, later voiced the Big Bad of a far more well-known ninja-themed series, in the Japanese version of which his original VA also had a voice role.
    • Throughout Episode 23, Ken reflects how he's lost his heart and needs to find it. Years later, his voice actor would go on to play another guy who lost his heart.
    • Imperialdramon's "Positron Laser" attack. In 2008, scientists actually discover a way to produce antimatter (namely positrons) in large quantities by using a laser.
    • In the English dub, Ken and Wormmon are respectively voiced by Derek Stephen Prince and Paul St. Peter. Ken's status as former Digimon Emperor becomes all the more amusing when you discover that the two respectively voice Frieza and Sorbet in Dragon Ball Super's Bang Zoom! dub, who have a similar dynamic except Frieza's actually evil. Guess Ken really was reenacting The Emperor's New Clothes after all.
    • After the release of Our Future in Digimon Adventure tri. over a decade later, one viewer lampshades that it's entire main plot has all its major points covered or is similar to Hurricane Touchdown. Both Canon Immigrants are the main focus of the plot, their Digimon eventually succumbs to the virus and dies at the end. In addition, both feature a portion of the cast vanish due to the main antagonist(s), and are rarely if at all brought up for the duration of the plot.

The only ones that can stay are the Positron Laser one and the final one related to Tri.

The best character is always the one-shot disguise.
