Found there's a topic on this, so...

Anyways, we have this new batch of nominees for a while:

A few thoughts on this:

  • Unfortunately, I think what keeps Kate Bush from getting the nod is the relative obscurity as far as Americans are concerned. Such a shame, because I'm starting a deep dive and am liking what I'm hearing (especially Hounds of Love).
  • I'm already kinda peeved that they passed up Judas Priest twice, and Metal doesn't have that much representation, so I hope Iron Maiden gets the nod.
  • I never got why Carole King is in under non-performers but never got nominated for influencing the Singer-Songwriter trend. I think she's a shoo-in, a fitting way to mark 50 years of Tapestry's release.
  • Wouldn't hurt to see Tina Turner in for her solo effort, given the rocky nature of her relationship with Ike when she's only represented under that.
  • C'mon! Induct Todd Rundgren already!
  • ... I think it's going to be a while before we see a strong class like 2017 again.

And the inductees are in:

  • Foo Fighters (there are older rock bands that should be considered first, but I'll take it; also welcome our new double-inductee Dave Grohl)
  • The Go-Go's (making them the first all-female band inducted. Yes, band. The all-female groups inducted before them are Girl Groups)
  • Jay-Z (honestly, I'm ambivalent about rap acts in the RHOF. Given it's an offshoot of the kinds of R&B that's always been inducted from day one, I... don't care as much. But much like Foo Fighters above, there are acts in the genre I'd consider first [eg A Tribe Called Quest for starters...])
  • Carole King (they should have done this long ago)
  • Todd Rundgren (I thought they're going to give him the same treatment as Nile Rodgers, and I won't object to that either. Seeing him in is great.)
  • Tina Turner (our second ever female double-inductee)

Musical Excellence:

  • LL Cool J (well, he's been nominated so many times, and he's also known for finding talent in the early days of Hip Hop, so it makes sense)
  • Billy Preston (would be a nice touch to have either surviving Beatle induct him)
  • Randy Rhoads (I'm seriously bummed that Iron Maiden didn't get in, but I'll take this)

Early influences:

  • Kraftwerk (why not a full induction? I know they expanded "early influences" beyond just rock and roll influences, but still.)
  • Gil Scott-Heron (around in the 70's, so I also don't get the "Early Influences" for him. He is important for influencing modern genres anyhow, but...)
  • Charley Patton (in the classic sense of "early influences", fitting.)

Ahmet Ertegun Award:

  • Clarence Avant

Nominees for 2022:

My two cents:

  • Please stop cockblocking metal fans, Rock Hall! Induct Judas Priest dammit!
  • One rap act will be a sure thing. Looks like A Tribe Called Quest would have to wait another time.
  • Pat Benatar and Fela Kuti both got a lot of fan votes when they last got nominated. We'll see if it falls in their favor this time. I think the former would get in.
  • I do believe Warwick can get in this time. That documentary is still fresh after all.

I'm doing a "project" where I'm picking out one album each by every nominee this year and finding it to stream someplace. Going alphabetically it's been Odelay, Crimes of Passion, and Hounds of Love so far. It'll be interesting for me because I'm familiar with every artist by name but don't necessarily know their work too well: Fela I essentially know through Pop-Cultural Osmosis only

So some time back, Dolly Parton gracefully bowed out from the ballot, feeling there are acts deserving of this distinction rather than her at least for the time being.

And this year's inductees are:

  • Pat Benatar (not surprising)
  • Duran Duran (the biggest fan vote, so can't say I'm too surprised)
  • Eminem (this first year rap artist nod trend is getting a bit silly imho)
  • Eurythmics
  • Dolly Parton (not everyday you see a country musician make it. She may be willing to concede it to someone else, but she did wind up still getting the honor)
  • Lionel Richie (and they still haven't considered the Commodores? This is ludicrous)
  • Carly Simon (I'm surprised she wound up getting it, but it's a welcome surprise indeed)

Musical Excellence:

  • Judas Priest (I have a very bittersweet feeling about this. On one hand, I'm happy that they're in by some account. On the other hand, this nod has "There, you happy?" vibes written all over it, and a backdoor nod just felt cheap)
  • Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis

Early Influences:

Ahmet Ertegun Award:

  • Allen Grubman
  • Jimmy Iovine
  • Sylvia Robinson

Just wanted to note that Eurythmics actually got the most votes out of all the inducted acts.

The nominees for this year:

My two cents:

  • Possibly the most influential name on the list has to be Joy Division.
  • Okay, maybe this time Kate Bush gets in. The Stranger Things bump should by now be a good omen for her.
  • Looks like Dolly Parton really opened up the country acts. If anything I'm surprised Willie Nelson wasn't considered sooner.
  • Here we go again with the metal act being nominated. Why do they still refuse to induct that much of them?

This is a solid list of artists.

I voted for ATCQ, RATM, Soundgarden, Maiden and Kate Bush.

=====

My predictions for the next few years.

2025: Linkin Park becomes eligible, and they will likely be inducted. Shame that Chester will never live to attend his induction.

2026: Gorillaz is the most successful fictional band since The Monkees (they should've been inducted ages ago).

2028: Kanye West and Beyoncé become eligible. Beyoncé is a stone-cold lock, but I'm not sure about Ye because of his meltdown.

Jon Landau has retired as Chairman of the Hall of Fame.

Rick Krim was named as his replacement. He worked for MTV from '82 to '94, and VH1 from 2001 to 2014.

Krim is a fan of progressive rock, and joined the Nominating Committee in 2008/09.

Krim has shown support for snubbed artists such as Iron Maiden, Oasis, and other artists from the music video era.

He has also produced a few music documentaries.

[up] you did say you thought one of the things keeping Kate Bush out was relative obscurity in the US - so now I almost think Stranger Things had something to do with her finally getting in.

Old Town Road got Nine Inch Nails in, so if an older act has a sudden resurge in popularity and isn't already inducted you can expect the Hall of Fame to nominate and induct them.

2024 nominees:

A few worthy choices. Too many far from rock (seriously, Mariah?). And still ignoring bands that should've gotten in long ago like Soundgarden, Iron Maiden and Alice in Chains. Let's see where this goes.

I'm starting to wonder if the likes of King Crimson (especially considering that they are influential in prog and their big contemporaries got in already) or Captain Beefheart (plenty of inducted acts explicitly name him as an influence) would ever get the nod.

This year's class:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Cher
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Foreigner
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

Plus Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield in the 'musical excellence' side inductions, that could be the way to finally induct acts like the two mentioned above. And already saw some question Frampton, who is mostly recognized for the three singles from Frampton Comes Alive! and collaborations, and that he was better off inducted as part of Humble Pie.

Also for Early influences: Alexis Korner, John Mayall (both for British blues) and Big Mama Thornton (it took until now? You've got to be kidding! I didn't realize she never got the nod earlier)

And for Non-Performer: Suzanne de Passe
