Ben Drowned (also known as You Shouldn't Have Done That, Haunted Majora's Mask Cartridge, or just by its author's name Jadusable) is a Creepypasta-turned-Alternate Reality Game web series created by writer Alexander D. Hall under the pseudonym of Jadusable, a college student and YouTube user.

The story begins with Jadusable posting about how he got a free Majora's Mask cartridge from a strange old man at a garage sale. This sounds about as suspicious as you'd expect. After he gets home and plays it, he notices some odd quirks and strange bugs. After performing the fourth-day glitch, things get... very frightening.

The story consists of three arcs — the first can be found here, the second here, and the third here. Also, OOC happenings can be found on numerous pages of the Jadusable wiki; there was formerly a page dedicated entirely to OOC updates, but it has since been deleted.

While the first two arcs spanned from September 2010 to July 2011, the third would not begin until March 2020, just a month before Majora's Mask's twentieth anniversary. This arc ran until Halloween 2020, a little over 10 years after the story began, when the story concluded with the release of "The End.wmv". Despite the story being over, Hall confirmed on his Twitter that a new story in the same universe is in the works.

On February 28, 2021, "The Epilogue" was uploaded. Described as being of "ambiguous canon", it serves mainly to announce a sequel to the infamous April Fools' Day video "king kong.wmv" for April 1, 2021.

Hall himself has a Twitter account set up to answer any questions as well as provide general updates.

This ARG provides examples of the following tropes:

• Aborted Arc: The whole Jadus plotline ended up getting canned because it was starting to mirror current real-life events too closely.
• Actor Allusion: "King Kong 2: Return of the King" features Elias Toufexis as the Narrator. With as wholly saturated with memes as the entire video is, it would have been weirder if he didn't say "King Kong never asked for this" at some point.
• After the End: After Jadusable released The Father, he consumed and destroyed the world inside the cartridge, leaving nothing but the areas used in the beginning and the end of Majora's Mask.
  • The real world during the Awakening arc is implied to be this.
• And I Must Scream: Literally, in Jadusable's nightmare where he gets transformed into another Elegy Statue.
  "I tried to scream but the mask was pressed so tightly against my face that it was my new face... and my new face had no mouth."
  • Ben was suffering this until Jad used the Fourth Day glitch.
  • Rosa suffered the same fate when she got digitized, forced to relieve the First Day for a decade until Sarah came and saved her. And way before that, it's implied that one of the Elegy statues Sarah meets in The Truth.wmv alongside Ben was her.
• All Just a Dream: king kong.wmv seems to be one for Goron Link after he gets Drunk on Milk and passes out in front of the Milk Bar.
• Apocalyptic Log: Jadusable's account of what he sees in the game starts becoming one of these.
• April Fools' Day: king kong.wmv.
  • Subverted with "king.txt". Despite the name being a reference to king kong.wmv, it has nothing do to with that video. Instead it's another video with Jadus.
  • A sequel to "king kong.wmv" titled "The Return of the King" is set to premiere on April Fools Day 2021.
• Arc Number: 423.
• Arc Words: "You shouldn't have done that..."
  • "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"
  • "I don't know what I'm saying... forget what I say."
  • "Don't be hasty" and variants thereof in the Awakening arc.
  • "We do not fear death, for we have created eternity."
• The Artifact: Majora's Mask elements went on the back burner after the retooled second arc began. The original draft of the game, before Jadusable ran into financial problems, would've kept said elements to the end, however. Come Awakening, they're back.
• Ascended Glitch: A common issue in emulated games of Majora's Mask is to have the sun's texture glitch out and show double. In "The Last Hero.wmv", they're used to represent The Father watching Sarah, as they look like an enormous glowing pair of eyes.
• Being Watched: Jadusable starts feeling like this not long after he gets the game.
  • During the Awakening arc, Sarah is constantly being watched by The Father, to the point where she stops what she's doing to look at the sun or the moon, who stares back at her.
• Bittersweet Ending: In - fittingly - "The End.wmv". BEN is dead, Matt is banished from World Alpha, Ben is finally free from the Elegy statue and now inhabits Young Link's body and the cartridge is restored to its original state thanks to Kelbris, who's been revealed to be Good All Along. However, Jadusable is dead and all the denizens must have their memories wiped clean due to mental trauma, meaning Rosa won't remember Sarah and anything that happened after her arrival. And to end it all, Kelbris removes Sarah and Circle from World Alpha as part of his task to remove anomalies from the simulation, leaving their fates unknown.
• Bloodless Carnage: Even though the story is really terrifying, the videos are all shot within the engine of Majora's Mask, an E rated game.
  • Surprisingly, at 4:42 in Jadusable.wmv, Link suffers an instant death as a blood splatter appears on the screen. Truth is, Ocarina and Majora both had blood for when you got hit, but was so unrealistic looking (though it was indeed red) that the games got an E-rating anyway.
• Body Horror: Jadusable's dream. Also, although a less bloody version than usual for this, Link's "glitched" back. Kelbris, Rosa and the Moon Children, as revealed by the Awakening Arc.
• Body Surf: The Truth.wmv implies Kelbris might have this trick figured out, depending on how you interpet Jadusable being "made a vessel".
• Brain Uploading: The Moon Children's "Ascension" has been revealed to be this by Abel. The cartridge itself is where several peoples' consciousnesses have been uploaded. A spectrogram message at the beginning of one video shows that they had no idea that this is what their "ascension" would entail.
• But Thou Must!: One of the first weird things that happens to Jadusable after doing the glitch is having the "Go to the lair of the temple's boss?" prompt pop up where it shouldn't. He tries to select "No", but his cursor won't move.
• Canon Discontinuity: No, the Ryukaki arc is not considered canon by any means. Considering the amount of reveals during the Awakening arc, such as BEN not being a ghostly entity, it would cause a lot of continuity errors.
• Creepy Child: The Elegy of Emptiness statue. Only on the appearance.
• Darkest Hour: The Final Hours.wmv shows how things went from bad to worse: Sarah lost the Adult Link Mask, she failed to stop the remaining in-game Moon Children and collect their Heart Pieces, she's trapped inside Clock Town, most of the digitized denizens are dead, the Pendant of Memories is next to useless, The Father is almost regaining his full power, Matt is still missing, Jadusable has been corrupted, BEN is still around, the surviving denizens plus Rosa have no idea what to do and, whatever happens after the poll, the players are left with a decision that can drastically change the course of the story and affect the Haunted Cartridge. And then it turns out, the glitch was what the Moon Children wanted all along.
• Dead Person Conversation: Possible subversion. At first you think the chat messages with BEN are this, but then it turns out BEN may not be, well, BEN, after all. Also possibly played straight, since at least one of the chats seems to have been with The Father/Kelbris, who's been confirmed to be dead, instead of BEN.
• Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Played for Laughs during king kong.wmv when Jadusable's impromptu music video is interrupted by the appearance of another BEN save file... whereupon he promptly deletes it, makes a new file named SWAGGGGG and carries on dancing.
  • Played much, much more seriously during THE FATHER.wmv. Jad ignores the fact that BEN is suddenly pleading with him to stop playing, stop digging, even going so far as to delete the files where BEN pleads. It ends with Jad awakening The Father, the real Sealed Evil in a Can, who promptly kills him for it.
• Doing In the Wizard: The Awakening Arc reveals (after being hinted in the Moon Children arc) Ben isn't really a ghost possessing or haunting the game in a supernatural sense, but someone whose consciousness was transferred to the digital world through a scientific procedure.
• Escapism: This is what the Eternity Project promises those who want to be digitized: a simulated world free of the problems of our world. In fact, this was the original purpose of World Alpha when the Moon Children got digitized, until it became the Haunted Cartridge when something went wrong - specifically, the Moon Children gaining bits and pieces of control over The Father.
• Evil-Detecting Dog: A pack of them is present in the orchard from the Ryukaki arc.
• Evil Is Not a Toy: In this case, evil IS a toy.
• Eye Scream: "My eyes... they took... my eyes." It was originally thought this was being said by Kelbris, but images of him as the Father seem to show that he was the one who did the taking. Though given the Father's eyes it's very likely that he did have his eyes taken, and then took some replacements.
• Fallen States of America: According to Jadus in 2018.txt, society collapsed during that time. And if baker.txt is of any indication, it got even worse during the pandemic two years later. Not to mention the Moon Children, who are still running around.
• The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: One of the text files ends with BEN basically thanking the reader, because opening the file has let him out into the real world.
• Foreshadowing:
  • The Nightmare Sequence below retroactively became this in Awakening, alluding both to BEN's origins and to the fact that The Father had gotten into Jad's head.
  • Prior to "The End.wmv", one of the reasons the players decided to reactivate the fourth day glitch was so they could free Ben to help him fight The Father. In retrospect, there was no reason to actually believe this, as every time Ben had gone up against The Father before he hid like a scared child. This should have been obvious proof that Matt's suggestion to perform the glitch didn't make complete sense.
  • Even before that, Matt being able to remember Jadusable and his actions when nobody else could was a sign something fishy was going on. The players, and thus Sarah, didn't catch on until it was far too late.
• Fun with Acronyms: In "Methods of Revolution[The Truth.wmv]", Abel reveals that BEN stands for Behavioral Event Network. The Moon Children gave it that name as a tribute to the real Ben, who was the first person they successfully digitized into the network.
• Gameplay and Story Integration: An interesting case of integrating Majora's Mask's base game mechanics with the narrative; during "The Prisoner.wmv", the Moon Children summon a Gomess to fight Sarah. Since she doesn't have the light arrows, Link is incapable of defeating it. It's only after she flees and finds Rosa - who grants her the light arrows - that Link can fight back against it.
• Gaslighting: Mentioned in passing in thetruth.rtf. BEN thinks it would have been hilarious to just randomly close a window or move the mouse a little bit occasionally and wait for Jadusable to notice.
• Genre Shift: The first arcs all have a strong paranormal horror vibe to them, but the Awakening arc shifts closer to Science Fiction with the reveals that the "hauntings" were due to scientific experiments with the "digitizing" of human consciousness (something that was already vaguely hinted at during the Moon Children arc).
• Get Out!:
  • The first time the Wayward Horizon forum group was broken into, someone cut off the Welcome Post by Guide to tell us in Binary that we shouldn't be in there, and to GET. OUT. Minutes later, another thread is posted, this one by Kelbris, simply saying "GET OUT" after which the password was changed.
  • After the Methods of Revolution's website opened, Drowned's page simply displayed GET OUT NOW before The Prisoner.wmv was posted.
• Haunted House: Reversing the reversed portions of Ryukaki's final video (so that they play normally) will reveal that he has been living in Ben's old house all this time.
• Heartbeat Soundtrack: "h b i s r ea l".
• Hidden in Plain Sight: The denizens of the game's Discord server noticed this trope was in play a few days after THE FATHER.wmv was released. One of the Cleverbot conversations between Jad and BEN in TheTruth.rtf had Jad asking questions about Ben, and phrased in a way that indicated he wasn't talking to BEN at all.
• Impeded Communication: Jadusable's efforts to communicate his problem to people on the internet are disrupted by BEN, to the point where a good chunk of the posts are full of false information, and things Jadusable said being outright removed, just to mess with Jadusable's head and fool the audience. Actually, he was doing it to work around Kelbris' manipulations of Jad. It backfired specacularly, and the anger he stoked led to Jad unsealing (and attacking) The Father, who ate him for it.
• I'm a Humanitarian: Played with; THE FATHER.wmv sees Jad's in-game avatar eaten by the title abomination. Whether or not it means he did it literally is up for debate.
• Interface Screw: ... In real life.
• Irony: The reverse Song of Healing is notoriously creepy and unsettling, especially in the context of the story and videos. But what do you get when you play the Song of Healing backwards in the actual game? Saria's Song, one of the most upbeat tunes in the series.
• Jump Scare:
  • In "DROWNED.wmv", when Link is at the tree inside the moon and he's being stalked by the statue, it cuts to a momentary flash of the Happy Mask Salesman's livid face and a scream before it cuts to black.
  • Day 11. Jadus, preparing to move out again, looks both directions. When he looks right, Drowned is there waiting.
• The Little Shop That Wasn't There Yesterday: The garage sale Jadusable got the game from. When he goes back to talk to the old man who gave it to him, he only finds a "for sale" sign.
• Madness Mantra:
  • "You shouldn't have done that..."

• Mind Hive:
  • BEN is revealed to be some kind of entity containing the souls of the digitized Moon Children, with five of them being loyal to The Father.
  • Player 2 served as this for the players before his death at the hands of The Jailer.
  • Sarah not only became this for the players, but for Ben and The Father's victims.
• Mistaken for Evidence: No, Cleverbot is not important. Nor is this, if Jadusable's youtube channel is a reliable source. Or not... Word of God says any information that isn't found here or here is not to be accepted as clues or evidence. Theories are welcome, but nothing outside of those two locations is to be taken as official (presumably with the exception of the Ryukaki arc).
• The Most Dangerous Video Game: The Most Dangerous Video Game. This is the leader everyone is trying to follow.
• My Greatest Failure: Given the vehemance with which he was protesting the uploads of the unaltered version of Jad's gameplay, BEN seems to regard those events as this. The Truth.wmv implies that it was for not being able to explain things to Jad, owing both to his fear of and having to work around Kelbris.
• Nightmare Sequence: Jadusable has one of these later on where the moon children from Majora's Mask, who BEN has apparently been removing any reference to up to this point, slowly sew his arms and legs together and a mask to his face, making him resemble an Elegy statue.
• No-Sell: In king kong.wmv, Skull Kid attempts to levitate Link and set him on fire like he does in canon, but since Link is in Goron form this time around, the fire doesn't hurt him.
• Nothing Is Scarier: All BEN does is make vague threats, and mess with his computer. It's surprisingly creepy, and it leads to a horrifying nightmare sequence. When he stops doing all of that and starts begging, it's absolutely terrifying.
• O.O.C. Is Serious Business: THE FATHER.wmv see BEN begging Jad to stop playing.
• Off the Rails: To the point that gamejacking attempts eventually contributed to tighter moderation.
• Oh, Crap!:
  • In the first arc, you have one when you discover that you set BEN free.
  • A mix of this and the fandom rejoicing when Jadusable announced that the third part of the game revolves around BEN screwing directly with you.
  • BEN had one when Jad started loosening the lid on the can in THE FATHER.wmv.
• Our Hero Is Dead:
  • With depressing regularity. Jadusable and Jadus both died on screen, with Alex and Rosa both presumed to have been killed off screen as well.
  • And then in arc 3, Player 2 is killed by the Jailer, and Sarah is killed in-game twice; once by Jadusable, and then after getting revived, she's forced to make a Heroic Sacrifice to fix the world, though it's left ambiguous if she is truly gone for good.
• Point of No Return: After "The Last Hero.wmv" was posted, Alex Hall opened a poll in order for players to decide their next course of action: Continue playing the game and stop The Father or explore the hotel. Said choice will permanently affect the course of the story and the ARG's conclusion. The former option was chosen.
• Powered by a Forsaken Child: It's implied that BEN is the spirit of a boy who fell in with the Moon Children cult and drowned himself for the purpose of "ascension". Somehow Ben's spirit got trapped in in the Majora's Mask game cartridge, and he wants out. At the end of Arc 1, he seemingly succeeded. Arc 3 revealed that, no, he didn't actually get out, and was locked in the cartridge still.
• Plot Parallel: A retroactive example, in that the real Majora's Mask functions as a parallel for Ben Drowned.
• Real Life Writes the Plot: This was the big reason the Jadus and New World plot lines vanished during the Awakening arc, as reality began hewing a bit too close to what Alex Hall had in mind.
• Recap Episode: During the Awakening arc, a file titled TheRealTruth.rtf was published in the Methods of Revolution website. It is essentially a compiled recap of the Haunted Cartridge arc, containing all of Jadusable's video summaries alongside TheTruth.rtf. However, it contains major differences compared to what Jadusable posted in 2010: all mentions of Ben are renamed to BEN, and a new entry written by BEN (or rather, the in-game Moon Children that were part of BEN) was added to the document, revealing that he tampered with TheTruth.rtf years ago.
• Schmuck Bait: Thetruth.txt wasn't posted to 4chan, but to a file sharing service as an .rtf file by BEN, so he can get you, too.
• Sealed Evil In A Cartridge: BEN. And it's been unsealed alongside with The Father. Except, The Father is only evil because the Moon Children who make up BEN's mind want it to be - it's an administrative AI in charge of the game world, and is being manipulated into allowing them to continuously destroy and reset the world.
• Set Right What Once Went Wrong: After receiving the Adult Link Mask, Sarah plays the Song of Time to go back to 2010 in order to stop Kelbris/The Father when he was sealed.
• Shout-Out:
  • The name on Ifrit/Matt's Gmail account was "Matt HUBRIS", the capitalization on the name possibly being a subtle shout out to Everyman HYBRID.
  • There seem to be a few for either adaptation of The Shining. The whole "Link Statue following you" thing seems to be based on the hedge animals that follow that story's protagonist, Danny. Then there's the line "Come play with us..."
  • Weeping Angels are also referenced.
• Swallowed Whole: THE FATHER.wmv ends with Link being gobbled up whole by the titular entity.
• Time Skip: The Awakening arc takes place in 2020, nine years after the second arc ended.
• Tomato in the Mirror:
  • Try asking the real Cleverbot who drowned BEN, and chances are you may be directed to the mirror. Especially likely to happen if Cleverbot claims to be BEN when asked...
  • In a much whammier fashion, "Methods of Revolution (Prologue Part 1)" pulled it on the players by collectively dumping them into Player 2.
• Un-Cancelled:
  • Jadusable announced that due to low funds, he would not be making any more chapters of Ben Drowned. Two days later he announced that he had gotten such an overwhelming amount of donations that he would in fact be able to continue after all. And the ARG started back up, working the original announcement about the cancellation into the ARG itself by Breaking the Fourth Wall. It has been implied that The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You.
  • The Awakening Arc is this, as well, picking the game up nearly a decade later.
• Unreliable Narrator:
  • Nearly all the major characters, due to the influence of BEN and The Father.
  • A special mention goes to Matt during the Awakening arc, who did this deliberately.
• Wham Episode:
  • TheTruth.rtf. And then, nine years later, TheRealTruth.rtf comes out, revealing stuff that was omitted from the original file by BEN. The latter of those led into the Awakening Arc, which is functionally one Wham Episode after the other as the endgame takes its course:
  • The Father.wmv, which reveals that BEN wasn't the real villain, and was in fact trying to stop an even more powerful entity called "The Father" (also known as Kelbris) from being set free. It didn't work, and the Father ate Jadusable.
  • "Methods of Revolution (Prologue Part 1)": A nameless man known as Player 2, who is now sharing his skull with the players, wakes up in a hotel outside of the boundaries of time and space.
  • "Methods of Revolution (Day 11)": Thanks to the players' recklessness, Player 2 is killed by the Jailer and the game skips to Day 14, where the players are now in control of a female prisoner.
  • "Methods of Revolution (Day 21)": Abel has left something for Player 3, now known as Sarah: a Nintendo 64 with a copy of Majora's Mask. Said copy is the Haunted Cartridge. And as soon as she starts a new game, someone speaks to her.
  • "Methods of Revolution (Ben.wmv)" and "The Truth.wmv": In the cartridge, Sarah meets Ben. As in, the real Ben, who's been waiting for someone to play a song for him. The Truth.wmv reveals that, Ben and several others were victims of The Father, constantly being manipulated and tortured for years. As thanks for playing the Song of Healing, Ben gives Sarah the Adult Link Mask and tells her to go back to where it all began to stop the Father. Sarah then plays the Song of Time and goes back to the First Day, bringing the game back to its original state before the Father got free.]]
  • "riot.txt", A sequel to "baker.txt" that was posted after Ben.wmv on the Methods of Revolution's website shows the societal collapse of the United States in greater detail. And it's not pretty.
  • "Methods of Revolution [The Truth.wmv]" and "The Last Hero.wmv" both follow on from The Truth.wmv. The former sees Able reveal the nature of the Moon Children's Ascension, and reveals that Ben was the first to undergo the process. The latter explains a bit more on Ben's backstory, revealing that he was a boy who just wanted to be his favorite video game character, only to be trapped in the Elegy statue until Jad executing the Fourth Day glitch set him loose. And even while Sarah is learning this, The Father's started making his move to stop her.
  • The Prisoner: In the cartridge, Sarah meets Rosa, who has been imprisoned by the Moon Children since her ascension, confirming that Rosa was still alive.
  • The Happy Mask Salesman.wmv: Rosa reveals to Sarah that the cartridge was originally a safe haven for those who wanted to be free from the real world, but became corrupted for unknown reasons. She also reveals that the Moon Children were nothing like they are today. Tatl is revealed to be Circle, another individual who got their memory back thanks to the Pendant of Memories. Before heading into Snowhead, Sarah returns to Clock Town, where she finds all inhabitants including Matt missing, and then the corpse of the Happy Mask Salesman while the reverse Song of Healing plays in the background, implying that the Father was already gaining his strength.
  • The Dying World.wmv: While the Father's corruption continues to degrade the world, Sarah meets another ascended represented by Darmani, who not only blames Sarah for the cartridge's corruption, but reveals the presence of another player and the existence of a "mirror world". The dialogue also reveals that many of the ascended inhabitants don't want Sarah to "save" them at all.
  • The Predecessor.wmv: While the corruption continues to spread, to the point that Sarah can simply walk along the floor of the Great Bay, Sarah confronts the Gyorg Moon Child. Instead of killing Sarah, he makes her invincible in order to run out the game clock. Rosa tries to "pull" the Zora Mask (which is needed to defeat Gyorg) from the game's code, only to discover that she can't... because somebody else is already using it. When Sarah finally escapes, she is transported outside the game's bounds where she meets the person using the Zora Mask: "the predecessor", also known as Jadusable.
  • The Showdown.wmv: Jadusable is now working with The Father, and possessing all masks, becomes the Fierce Deity and warps Sarah to the Chamber of Sages in Ocarina of Time. Cut to them fighting each other, ending with Sarah dying. Before the video ends, BEN sends a link to a new website for...
  • ...The Eternity Project, which turns everything about the story upside down. The Moon Children was nothing more than a lie. The entire thing is just a front to lure people into ascending as an experiment to transcend mortality and escape the real world. The website also reveals the organization is monitoring everyone inside the game, the existence of a multiverse composed of at least six worlds and that even Kelbris was nothing more than a pawn and a victim. One week later, an ad for the Eternity Project was posted on Youtube: the whole cult front was discarded and they're now operating to the public as a business, meaning anyone can pay to be digitized. And details from the current version of their site indicate the Project has become aware of the chaotic happenings and broken state of the Cartridge, which they call "World Alpha", leaving the players a means to "reboot" Sarah.
  • The Final Hours.wmv. The good news? Sarah is back. The bad news? Everything else. Sarah wakes up in the final hours with 3 hearts and no Adult Mask, Clock Town's NPCs are slowly being replaced by gravestones, Kelbris is almost ready to awake again, all of the exits out of Clock Town are blocked off by indestructible boulders, and all of the doors to the buildings in Clock Town, despite appearing open, are blocked by invisible walls. Sarah notices that the door to the mayor's office is the only one that still appears normal and finds that it actually still works. Inside, she meets "Mayor Dotour", a.k.a. Tiki, who transports her to the white void area where Rosa and the other remaining survivors are having an argument very reminiscent of the one in the mayor's office from the actual game, only this one is about whether Sarah should perform the 4th Day glitch or not. After hearing their arguments, Tiki tells Sarah that the decision is ultimately up to her and transports her back to the mayor's office. She rushes to the observatory, making it just in time to talk to the astronomer at the moment the timer runs out to trigger the glitch. The video ends on the "Will you look through the telescope?" prompt, with the decision being left up to the viewers — don't trigger the glitch and leave everyone in the cartridge to their fate, or trigger the glitch and risk unleashing Kelbris at his full power.
  • The End.wmv: Matt HUBRIS is the Omnicidal Maniac Big Bad, having manipulated Sarah and the Players alike into releasing the seals keeping him from accessing The Father, who is actually the AI controlling World Alpha. Jadusable was trying to stop him. And The Father isn't a god of destruction within the game world as the Moon Children believe, but simply a reflexive program that does whatever it thinks people want it to do. When told to fix the cartridge, it does so, but in order to do this it must delete all anomalies from the cartridge (which includes Sarah and Circle as they are currently out of bounds) and reset everyone's memories to before anything happened, meaning the inhabitants of the cartridge will forget all about Sarah and everything she did.
