Sandbox / Spiritual Antithesis Wick Check

Go To

It's been noted on this wiki that Spiritual Antithesis has a more subjective approach to it. So, I decided to check if there are any problems.

(31/50)

  1. Beastars /Spiritual Antithesis: To Zootopia. Both stories deal with the tension that exists between predators and prey animals in an animal-dominated world, and how the characters deal with it. However, thematically they are quite different. In Zootopia, there is a historic tension between predator and prey, but the creative team has set up a world that gives predators a reason for not desiring to eat prey anymore. They allow them to eat meat for protein as fish and bugs did not evolve into sapience and the city was founded by a joint decision of the evolved predators and prey. Also there is no evidence in the film that predators are struggling to contain their base instincts and it takes a Psycho Serum to bring out their savage side. In Beastars, different species really do have different urges, with predators having to learn to control their predatory urges or otherwise indulge in them on the down-low. It's a society where the Vegetarian Carnivore trope is enforced, prey animals have a constant awareness that they could be eaten and it's unclear why these evolved predator and prey would choose to live in close contact with each other under these conditions. this reads as subjective from what I know of both series
  2. YMMV.The Good Place S 4 E 12 Patty /Spiritual Antithesis: To the Black Mirror episode "San Junipero," which takes the opposite view of an afterlife of the type portrayed here. ZCE
  3. Deltarune /Spiritual Antithesis: To Undertale, which was all about player choice and the consequences therein, while Deltarune thus far regularly denies the player the privilege of making any meaningful choices. made by the same person
  4. Music.Sakura Gakuin /Spiritual Antithesis: Sort of. One of Mori-sensei's biggest gripes with the 2016 nendo Seniors, Sara and Mirena, was that they pretty much agreed on anything. Cue the 2017 nendo seniors who, towards the end of the year, often talked about having fights and disagreements during lessons in the early days of the nendo, many times even making their juniors worry about them. unsure
  5. War of the Worlds (2005) /Spiritual Antithesis: To Spielberg's own E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. While E.T. had a very innocent tone, featured a friendly alien, and was told from a child's perspective, this movie is very dark and cynical, features a hostile alien invasion, and is told from an adult perspective. both are made by Speilberg
  6. SpiritualAntithesis.Anime And Manga /Bocchi the Rock! is regarded by many as being the anti-K-On!. While both manga are published by Manga Time Kirara (though K-On! ran in the main magazine, while Bocchi runs in Max) and focus on a group of high school girls coming together to form a band, Bocchi isn't as idealistic; it has a more cynical sense of humor (especially in regards to Hitori's extreme social anxiety as she struggles to connect with her bandmates) and it also shows how difficult it can actually be for a band to become famous. In fact, according to Bocchi's creator, several decisions about the story and characters were deliberately made to differentiate it from K-On!. Hamaji did state she made Bocchi the exact opposite of Yui so I can safely say it's objective on the creators part
  7. Redo of Healer /Spiritual Antithesis: To the more well-known work The Rising of the Shield Hero. Both explore similar themes: in a Crapsack World, the idealistic protagonist's support-focused power causes him to be harshly mistreated by a party of so-called "heroes", leading him to develop a bleak outlook and set out on a quest for revenge. However, Shield Hero ultimately focuses on the friendships Naofumi develops and how they help him rise above his anger and hatred (represented by his Cursed Shield) and become a true hero. Redo dials the cynicism factor up to eleven, giving us a vengeance-bent protagonist who has basically thrown away most of his humanity, whose harem members are either brainwashed or also obsessed with vengeance. seems like a fan analysis
  8. Characters.Kill La Kill Satsuki Kiryuin /Spiritual Antithesis: To Stocking Anarchy. Both are long-haired swordfighters who have a rivalry with the other main character and their sister. The difference is that Satsuki is a noble Anti-Villain who was Good All Along and ends up in a loving relationship with her sister, while Stocking is an Anti-Hero bordering on Villain Protagonist who was Evil All Along and kills her sister in cold blood. Since Trigger is made of former Gainax employees, this can be added to the same creator category
  9. Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) /Spiritual Antithesis: To Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. In that cartoon, Sonic is just in for a thrill, and Dr. Robotnik is goofy and incompetent. In this show, Robotnik is extremely menacing, has already conquered most of the world, and Sonic is one of the few people who stand between him and total world domination. unsure
  10. Alchemy Stars /Spiritual Antithesis: To Arknights in terms of storytelling, despite their similar post-apocalyptic worldbuilding, the conflicts within the settings are portrayed in opposite fashion, while Alchemy stars has you finding out the darker secrets lurking in the colourful scenery, Arknights has you finding the rays of hope in the grim, hostile land brimmed with catastrophe, war, and discrimination everywhere; The doctor and The navigator have opposite background for their characterization. seems objective
  11. Genre Turning Point.Music /A pair of 1993 albums, Modern Life is Rubbish by Blur and the self-titled debut of Suede, hold a similar status in the UK as Nevermind in the US as the albums that codified Britpop, the genre that would quickly emerge as the sound of '90s "Cool Britannia". Rooted in '80s indie rock and fusing numerous styles of British rock and pop from decades past into one flag-waving "good times" package, they marked a Lighter and Softer pushback against American-style grunge. pothole
  12. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia /Spiritual Antithesis: Rob McElhenney created the series as a deconstruction of Friends, with the main characters being self-centered jerks who don't support their friends. Many viewers and critics have also referred to it as this for Cheers and other traditional sitcoms. Some episodes, such as "The Gang Tries To Win An Award" and "Old Lady House: A Situation Comedy" are outright Take Thats at stereotypical sitcoms. objective
  13. Little Nightmares II /Spiritual Antithesis: Of ICO: It focuses on two children, a boy and a girl, having to go through a hellacious world with a focus of them holding hands. But in the end, both Ico and Yorda survive thanks to their teamwork, while Six betrays Mono and leaves him to his fate. seems subjective
  14. Kamen Rider Geats /Spiritual Antithesis: The series is this in regards to Kamen Rider Ryuki, in that the focus of the game is purely on fighting monsters and fighting between the Riders is not allowed. Additionally, while the Rider War is a singular conflict stuck in a "Groundhog Day" Loop from interference and always ends with no real winner, to various degrees of pleasantness (ranging from a clean Ret-Gone to an "Everybody Dies" Ending), the Desire Grand Prix has multiple rounds and intentionally alters time and space to clean up damages and keep non-participants out of the loop, not just to accommodate the winner's wish. Also, while the aforementioned alternate "Everybody Dies" Ending in Ryuki is strongly implied to be an unnatural occurrence caused by a loophole in Shiro Kanzaki's designs (to his detriment), it would be entirely possible for the equivalent to occur naturally for countless loops in Geats simply by losing. unsure
  15. Metroid: Samus and Joey /Spiritual Antithesis: To Metroid: Other M. All of the below seems objective
    • Where Other M sets out to be more realistic than other Metroid titles and to depict Samus as a broken person, Samus and Joey runs largely on Rule of Cool and goes out of its way to make Samus a badass Ideal Hero.
    • While both stories include the element that Samus's Power Suit is tied to her strength of will, Other M treats this as a weakness by having it turn off when she gets scared, while Samus and Joey treats it as a strength by letting Samus power up her suit through Heroic Resolve.
    • Additionally, while Other M was infamous for featuring Samus out of her armor far more often than other games and emphasizing her femininity at every turn, Samus and Joey is notable for having Samus stay in her armor nearly all the time and treats her gender as largely irrelevant to who she is.
    • Other M goes out of its way to depict Samus as silent and stoic, and she rarely emotes. Samus and Joey allows her to run a wider emotional gamut, and she's constantly dropping one-liners.
  16. Tunnel in the Sky /Spiritual Antithesis: Tunnel in the Sky was written in response to William Golding's Lord of the Flies. Heinlein disagreed with the viewpoint that savagery and barbarianism were humanity's natural impulse in the absence of civilization. Ironically, Golding had written Flies for a similar rebuttal: having disagreed with The Coral Island, were stranded young white men are living peacefully until native savages threatened them. seems objective
  17. Alya and the Harem Reality /Spiritual Antithesis: To Villain Of Your Own Story, a comparison that Cross mentions in the author notes of chapter one where he calls the fic 'salt garbage'. Both of them involve Alya making the reality altering Wish, but the premises are polar opposites. Villain of Your Own Story applies the Ron the Death Eater trope to Alya and has her take the Miraculous and make an impulsive wish against Ladybug, then having to deal with the undesired fallout on her own. Alya and the Harem Reality has Alya grab the Ladybug Miraculous in a desperate and last-minute effort to stop Hawkmoth by Wasteful Wishing, leaving both of their Alternate Timeline selves to deal with both positive and negative consequences together. Where Alya is trapped in an ironic hell in Villain of Your Own Story, in Harem Reality it is more close to the idea of a second chance to save the world. unsure
  18. SOPHIE /Shout-Out: "Immaterial" is frequently seen as a huge invocation yet thematic inversion of Madonna's "Material Girl". pothole
  19. SpiritualAntithesis.Video Games /Umineko: When They Cry can easily be seen as this towards Higurashi: When They Cry. While both series share similar themes and structure (Psychological horror mystery with a "Groundhog Day" Loop function) Umineko is much more cynical and deconstructs several of the tropes in Higurashi. same creator
  20. YMMV.Last And First Men /Unintentionally Sympathetic / Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The Fifth Men wiping out the Venerians is treated by the narrative as a Necessarily Evil and tries to paint it as a Mercy Kill (since, according to the narrator, the Venerians were going to run out radioactive material to feed on). A lot of people sympathized with the Venerians and viewed the Fifth Men as genocidal invaders. Note, this is not Values Dissonance since people even at the time complained. This even inspired C. S. Lewis to write Out of the Silent Planet as a Spiritual Antithesis to First and Last Men. pothole
  21. Franchise. The DCU /Spiritual Antithesis: The DC universe is like the Marvel Universe, due to both being long-running comic book continuities, but the way they do things is a lot different: DC reboots their main universe every few years to streamline continuity while Marvel keeps the same one with constant updates; DC heroes tend to be more clean-cut and heroic while the Marvel heroes tend to act within morally grey areas; DC places a larger emphasis on legacy and passings-of-the-torch while Marvel has more independent superheroes who grow up to stand alongside the last generation. While this might make it sound like Marvel is the Darker and Edgier to DC's Lighter and Softer, in reality, they both have moments of lighter and darker content. The main difference is that while Marvel works to make its world and characters feel realistic, DC emphasizes the relationship and history between heroes to drive its arcs. unsure
  22. Recap. The Loud House S 2 E 15 Back Out There Spell It Out /Spiritual Antithesis: The episode resembles a No Such Luck with a happy ending. In the first, a sibling Loud (Lincoln) feels constrained and suffocated by his family and decides to "bring bad luck" to them in order to gain more freedom, and he succeeds, even committing some acts that "spit in the face" of his family (Lincoln sits in just his underwear on top of Lola's tea table). In the last one, a sibling Loud (Lucy) feels constrained and suffocated by her family and decides to "bring bad luck" to them in order to gain more freedom, and she succeeds, even committing some acts that "spit in the face" of her family (Lucy, apparently, eats the entire refrigerator, and leaves nothing for her siblings). The difference is that in No Such Lukh, Lincoln only realizes his mistake when he sees himself more and more harmed by the family and ends up apologizing for inventing the bad luck story, but in the end, everyone continues to believe that he is bad luck. Already in Spell It Out, Lucy realizes her mistake when she sees her family being harmed more and more and ends up apologizing for bringing bad luck to them, but in the end, everyone laughs and explains that, in fact, she never brought bad luck to them. Both are in the same show
  23. VideoGame.Asuras Wrath /Spiritual Antithesis: There are many reasons why many refer to it as the Japanese God of War. That said, Asura, to his credit, is much nicer than Kratos is for the most part in the pre-PS4 God of War games. seems subjective
  24. Music.Ludwig Van Beethoven /Spiritual Antithesis: Beethoven was prone to compose pieces that starkly contrast each other. The most notable example includes the Symphony No. 5 and Symphony No. 6. Both works are built from a similar rhythmic idea, but one is compact and potent with concentrated energy emphasized over orchestral color, while the other is expansive and lyrical with programmatic elements.
  25. Manga. When Will Ayumu Make His Move /Spiritual Antithesis: Both Ayumu and Urushi can be seen as this to Nishikata and Takagi from fellow sister work, Teasing Master Takagi-san. While Nishikata gets flustered pretty easily from Takagi's constant teasing, Ayumu remains unfazed from Urushi's attempts. Additionally, Takagi is easily able to thwart Nishikata's attempts to tease her, while Urushi's attempts to tease Ayumu backfire on her at times, making herself flustered instead. made by the same guy
  26. Manga. The 100 Girlfriends Who Really Really Really Really Really Love You /Spiritual Antithesis: To a manga that started getting serialized right alongside it, Girlfriend, Girlfriend. Both are wacky gag-based harem romantic comedy manga, both have devoted and straightforward male leads, both have everyone admit that what they're doing would be considered cheating in any other relationship, and both have the girls try to make the relationship work as the harem grows. However, there are key differences; while the attraction is supernatural in 100 Kanojo, everyone is genuinely in love and they are willing to make friends with the rest of the harem, eventually piling up into a family dynamic. Rentarou also has energy to spare so his girlfriends never have to feel like they're left out of the loop. In contrast, Girlfriend, Girlfriend has the love happen naturally, but it focuses on the problems with a harem; that the girlfriends he has do in fact want to monopolize their man's attention even if they like the other girls, and explores what happens if a haremette wants him all to herself or when he can't keep up with their needs and his own selfishness. The harem is also much smaller and he only intends on dating two of them. seems subjective
  27. Literature. The Problem Of Susan /Spiritual Antithesis: To The Chronicles of Narnia. Specifically, Gaiman explores the Fridge Horror implications of the ending of The Last Battle (namely, Susan having to come to terms with the death of her family), and questions Aslan's benevolence in the light of this.invoked unsure
  28. Film.Winnie The Pooh Blood And Honey /Spiritual Antithesis: This film could be seen as a dark counterpart to Christopher Robin, both films seeing an adult Christopher returning to the Hundred-Acre Wood; where Robin sees his old friends help Christopher rediscover his childish sense of wonder, Blood and Honey sees Christopher horrified to witness what his old friends have become. unsure
  29. Characters.Godzilla The Godzillas /Spiritual Antithesis: The 2014 Godzilla was a force of nature predating humanity, and their only hope against dangerous opponents like the MUTO. Shin Godzilla, on the other hand, is a god of destruction created entirely by man's mistakes. seems objective
  30. Anime.Megalo Box /Spiritual Antithesis: Overall, the series highlights one of Tomorrow's Joe's biggest tragedies—the dilemma of the boxers having anything to live for outside the ring. Many characters in Joe, inlcuding the titular character, end up feeling like boxing is all they have in life, and end up physically and mentally worse for seeking only glory and fulfillment without considering the people around them. However, in Megalobox, a major theme of the second season is this Joe and others developing bonds with others and deciding to live for their sakes. Even the final battle of the show has Sachio throwing the towel just to spare both Joe and Mac an in-ring death, and Mac is blatantly powered by the care he has for his family. Both men are well aware that ending their title match like this would be unglamorous and lame, but they've already put out a decent showing and they definitely don't mind if they get to come back to their loved ones. seems objective
  31. Animation.Padak /Spiritual Antithesis: The film can be seen as one towards Finding Nemo, as both of them contrast in tone and narrative themes: While Finding Nemo starts out in the ocean, Padak starts out in a Korean fish market. While the ocean is seen as a mysterious place of adventure in Finding Nemo, in Padak, the horrors of the aquarium-based aspects of it are more displayed in view. And even when both share similarities, the main difference is that Nemo gets all the fish in Dr. P. Sherman's tank to escape via uniting them together, in Padak the hierarchy of the animal kingdom is in full display, and neither of them unite at the end. Only one manages to escape, and it isn't the titular character, who gets sliced up into sushi; it's the Master who is ultimately convinced to leave the aquarium after seeing Padak's fate. seems subjective
