Characters / Invaders of the Rokujyouma – Folsaria

Go To

A small kingdom on another world, whose lands are barren but have high levels of Mana. Its populace rely heavily on the military, Rainbow Heart, to protect them against attacks from monsters and the terrorist group Darkness Rainbow. Occasionally this conflict spills over into both factions sending Magical Girl Warriors to Earth.

    open/close all folders

    In General
  • Expy: Their civilisation appears to draw inspiration from Midchildia (with Rainbow Heart being stand-ins for the TSAB).
  • Famous Ancestor: All of Folsaria turns out to be the descendants of Grevanas and Ancient Forthorthian magicians. The magical beasts meanwhile migrated to the planet to escape from the cruelty of an ancient Forthorthian Military Coup.
  • Magical Land: Given, considering it's the home of Magical Girls like Yurika and Maki.
  • Magitek: Their level of technology isn't far from Earth, including magic vehicles descended from cart-pulling Golems. Some of their more recent technologies and design aesthetics are actually directly borrowed from Earth, but with some of the components modified to run on Mana because Folsaria lacks the infrastructure and resources to reproduce them exactly. They're currently in the middle of rolling out a cellphone network, which still relies on mana for transmission but is much cheaper than traditional scrying-based communication devices (since a stream of 1s and 0s requires very little power to transmit).
  • Meaningful Name: Grevanas named the kingdom from Forthorthe and its capital Sariachal. Their capital is named Thorthe from the former.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: According to their legends, their ancestors were exiled from their ancient homeland after betraying a royal family. They stayed in Folsaria as an atonement for their sins. Darkness Rainbow, meanwhile, is against this. Since overpopulation is starting to be a problem in their small country.

Rainbow Heart

Folsaria's military and police force, who also regulate the use of magic.
    In General
  • The Archmage: Archmage is an elite rank within their organisation, promotion to which appears to require competency in all schools of magic. Holders are sometimes addressed by the title of "Rainbow".
  • Color-Coded Wizardry: Has seven divisions, one for each of the colours of magic, each with an assigned tower.
  • The Fettered: Are extremely serious about following the rules, and in particular all of their agents swear an oath never to use magic for personal gain. However, this is also one of the grudges that Darkness Rainbow holds against them, claiming that their rules are overly restrictive.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Enforced in the lower ranks of the military, with men being given heavier Mana-powered equipment to act as Barrier Warriors, while women act as back-row attackers.
  • Improbably Female Cast: Lampshaded in book 36, when Koutarou sees Folsaria's rank-and-file troops for the first time and admits he didn't think they even had male mages. It's explained that men actually tend to have more Mana than women, but that mages need to be trained from a young age; men in Folsaria are recruited to the workforce early, so they lose their chance to capitalise on it. As a result, most of Rainbow Heart's commanding officers and advance agents are women.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While their rules can be labyrinthine at times, they're generally portrayed as good people.

    Rainbow Nana

Nana (formerly Rainbow Nana)

Rainbow Nana (10 years ago)
Click for present-day appearance

Yurika's mentor and former archwizard of Rainbow Heart. She saved Yurika when she was child but suffered serious injuries at the start of the series, forcing Yurika to take her role.

  • Ability Mixing:
    • Her guns "Over the Rainbow" can fire projectiles made from a mix of mana and spiritual energy, thus requiring a double-layered barrier to intercept.
    • Her reconstructed body incorporates the staff Encyclopedia (which can cast weak spells on its wielder's behalf), along with a spiritual energy generator and a system for amplifying spells. Put together, this allows her to keep using magic about as well as a normal mage.
  • The Ace: The strongest arch wizard in Folsaria.
  • Artificial Limbs: After blowing up a part of her body, she's given this by Folsaria but it's imperfect due to their low scientific level. She's later given a more advanced version by the invaders.
  • Broken Ace: Her status as a prodigy also left her Lonely at the Top.
  • Child Prodigy: She held the title of arch wizard at the age of ten.
  • De-power: While rescuing Yurika from Darkness Rainbow, Nana was cornered by the attack of seven enemy leaders. In a desperate last resort, Nana released all of her own magic at the price of no longer being able to use magic again.
  • Girlish Pigtails: While active as Rainbow Nana, she wore her hair in short pigtails. It's later shown that she still wears pigtails even in the present day, but in a slightly more mature style (lower, longer, and with plainer hair ties).
  • Handicapped Badass: Advanced prosthetic limbs or not, she can still kick some ass.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Due to being Lonely at the Top, she only had a few people she's close with; namely Yurika and Kanae. This is the reason why she's happy hanging out with the Invaders.
  • Mage Marksman: After her body is reconstructed she wields the twin pistols "Over the Rainbow", which can produce rapid-fire spiritual energy shots or a more powerful shot augmented with some of Nana's remaining mana.
  • Older Than She Looks: She has a rather small stature, with Yurika even lampshading she changed the size of her costume just so it can fit. Book 27 notes that Nana's reconstructed body is actually scrawnier than before her injuries, with the girls suggesting a remodel so she can look closer to her age; she rejects this for the time being, mainly because her youthful appearance helps her feel more like one of the group.
  • Passing the Torch: Her Taking the Bullet for Yurika leads her to give her the mantle of Rainbow to her.
  • Red Baron: Even while concealing her magic, she ironically received the nickname of "The Magician" from Forthorthian troops who admired her tricksy fighting style.
  • Retired Badass: She's the strongest wizard in Folsaria but is forced to retire due to serious injuries and handicaps. After being given better Artificial Limbs by the girls, she helps them in their battles.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: Downplayed. Sure she's the strongest arch-wizard yet can still do things like cooking for herself, but she has almost zero social life and, as she puts it while comparing herself to Harumi, lack feminine quality.
  • Seven Is Nana: "Nana" means "Seven" in Japanese. Fittingly for the former Rainbow magical girl, a rainbow has seven colors.
  • Taught by Experience: Theia notes that Nana's fighting style has no clear philosophy linking one move to the next, making it difficult to predict. She explains that she had very little formal training in martial arts, and learned mostly by copying her opponents.
  • Weak, but Skilled: She has relatively little mana due to her small stature, but can cast spells incredibly efficiently and has all sorts of surprising tricks up her sleeve. After her body is reconstructed, this helps her adapt to her new abilities very quickly.

    Kai
Marina's former partner-turned-fiance. He was killed by Gazan in Marina's last mission.
  • Always with You: His spirit was always with Marina's side. She was just so blinded by her desire to revive him she never noticed.
  • Dead Person Conversation: He later visits Marina's dream after her defeat.
  • The Lost Lenore: For Dark Purple/Marina. Her goal is to revive him.
  • Retirony: His lover, Marina, decided to retire as a magical girl and marry him after one last mission. Said mission cost him his life.

    Miyama Reina

Miyama Reina

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rokujouma_miyama_reina.png
A member of Rainbow Heart's foreign special operations department. While the Satomi Knights are busy on Forthorthe, she assists them by infiltrating their school as a Japanese teacher and assigning magically-disguised body doubles to hide their absence.
  • Stern Teacher: Takes Rainbow Heart's oath of "never use magic for personal gain" very seriously. Since the Knights have missed so many school days, she insists that they take a make-up test to ensure that the test results she's been faking for them are still in line with their actual abilities.

    Kaera

Kaera

Introduced in book 36. An old woman who acts as the Blue Tower's base commander, and holds a seat on Folsaria's elder council.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Not her personally, but she has a record for "enjoying eccentrics", spotting future assets in unlikely places and advocating on their behalf. She's personally responsible for Yurika receiving Folsaria's fastest ever promotion to archmage, and in book 36 recruiting Maki (an ex-terrorist) to her division's ranks.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Normally a mild-mannered woman who dresses in the loose robes of an elder. Seeing her in her blue military uniform instantly alerts Nana to how serious the situation has become.

Darkness Rainbow

Rainbow Heart's rival organization, a terrorist cell that sees Folsaria's current system as oppressive. Their ultimate goal is to solve their nation's Overpopulation Crisis by finding the ancient homeland they were banished from and returning there.
    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rokujouma_darkness_rainbow.png
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: After the connection between Folsaria and Forthorthe becomes public knowledge in book 26, the six magical girls' experience with both cultures leads them to being hired as ambassadors.
  • Dark Magical Girl: A group consisting of them.
  • Evil Power Vacuum: Because they were the most powerful force opposing Rainbow Heart, after they go legit other factions like the Cult of Grevanas start becoming more active.
  • The Face: Faces. There are actually a lot more minor members of the group, but the seven magical girls are the representatives of the organization.
  • Fighting for a Homeland: Originally founded to take back the Folsarians' ancient homeland, though in practice its members tend to be simply against Folsaria's leadership and focused on their own objectives. Learning that this homeland is Forthorthe, and actually getting to live there, lays the first seeds of their eventual Heel–Face Turn.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Initially a loose collection of mages who largely pursue their own goals, until the protagonists' strength forces them to start working together as a team. This leads them to better understand and appreciate each other, to the point where they're not ashamed to call each other friends.
Crimson: "I know what you want to say. I think it's strange too. Who would have ever thought the day would come that we try and save one of our allies without anything in it for ourselves?"
  • Legacy Character: It's implied that the current members are not the first holders of their title. Maki is likely the most recent member.
  • Master of One Magic: While Rainbow Heart are supposed to be generalists, each member of Darkness Rainbow specializes heavily in one form of Color-Coded Wizardry.
  • Motive Decay: Their original goal of returning to their original homeland slowly became lost as more members with other selfish goals joined in.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: The philosophical differences which lead Rainbow Heart to outlaw magic for personal gain are very visible. While most of Darkness Rainbow is Affably Evil, they are very willing to commit not only murder, but human sacrifice of children to raise mana to meet their objectives. The only thing that can be said is that they are not cruel or wanton; they only need life force, not to cause pain or suffering.
In Volume 10, Maya is so enamored of the six-year-old Kiriha that she promises to make her death as painless as possible.
  • The Psycho Rangers: While formally their organisation is the Evil Counterpart of Rainbow Heart, the main members (after teaming up with Maguz and especially Elexis) also act as this to the protagonists, not only being the group's most recurring enemies but also having Magitek resources and a similar roster of Color-Coded Wizardry specialists (lacking only Black and White members). They even disguise themselves as their heroic counterparts when they need to prevent Vandarion from discovering their brief Enemy Mine with Koutarou.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Their goal as a group is to find their ancient homeland because their country is quite small and is becoming overpopulated. It turns out to be Forthorthe, and learning this winds up causing members to defect.

    Dark Crimson

Dark Crimson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rokujouma_dark_crimson.png

Voiced by: Natsumi Takamori

A specialist in Red magic, which focuses on offensive energy spells. She's a Friendly Rival to Maki.

  • Blood Knight: Doesn't have much motive for supporting Darkness Rainbow beyond her love of fighting and getting stronger.
  • Friendly Enemy: Continues to consider Maki a friend even after she quits her position as Dark Navy, reasoning that "pursuing your own ideals" is always what their organisation was about anyway.
  • Magitek: After encountering Koutarou's Anti-Magic sword she spends some time thinking up ways to counter it and improve her strength in general. These include focusing the rays from a light spell into a (non-magical) laser, and mounting a gun barrel on her staff that she fires with explosion spells.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: While the other members of Darkness Rainbow wear cloaks, Crimson has a scarf instead.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Fitting as the member with the most aggressive fighting style.

    Dark Orange

Dark Orange

A specialist in Orange magic, which focuses on transformation spells.

    Dark Yellow

Dark Yellow

A specialist in Yellow magic, which focuses on defensive spells.

    Dark Green

Dark Green

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rokujouma_dark_green.png

A specialist in Green magic, which focuses on divination and illusion spells. The Rival to Kiriha.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Her feelings for Crimson are...hard to place.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Hates Maki for hogging Dark Crimson's attention even after the former's Heel–Face Turn.
  • Logical Weakness: While her ability to see possible futures is powerful, Kiriha is good at spotting loopholes.
    • When Crimson and Green start dodging everything the heroes throw at them, Kiriha correctly guesses that Green can only predict futures in which she acted without the benefit of her predictions (since trying to calculate how her knowledge of the future affects the future would lead into an infinite loop of I Know You Know I Know). She counters this by staggering the group's attacks - first using wide-area effects that force Green to move further when she dodges, then having the second wave wait until the enemy dodges and immediately Counter-Attack in response to their movements. This renders Green unable to predict the second wave with any degree of accuracy.
    • Green is also bad at predicting random elements, with each possibility coming out as equally likely. Theia takes advantage of this by ordering her weapons to randomise their attack patterns, while on a larger scale Kiriha comes up with multiple complete plans and draws cards to decide on one at the last minute.
    • Looking into the future is useless if you're just looking at illusions, which Kiriha exploits when Vandarion attempts to wield Green's powers without knowing their limitations.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Bespectacled and one of the planners of the group.
  • The Strategist: Her ability to predict the future leads her to plan out most of Darkness Rainbow's missions. Wary of this, in later books Kiriha starts purposely designing her plans to be as confusing to divination magic as possible.
  • Wetware CPU: Becomes an involuntary example in book 26, with the Elder Dragon Mk2's "Future Forecast System" turning out to be a heavily-drugged Dark Green connected to the machine via electrodes.

    Dark Blue

Dark Blue

A specialist in Blue magic, which focuses on summoning and healing spells.

    Maya (former Dark Navy)

Maya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rokujouma_maya.png
Ten years ago (as Dark Navy)
A specialist in Indigo magic, which focuses on mind-altering spells. The Dark Navy of the previous incarnation of Darkness Rainbow, who passed on her position to her apprentice Maki. First introduced in a Flashback to ten years ago in book 10, before returning in the present day as Darkness Rainbow's de facto leader.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Was heavily injured in battle with Rainbow Nana, forcing her to retire as Dark Navy. Even after she returns to the field as a Cyborg, her severely weakened magic makes her unable to reclaim her title.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While admitting to numerous murders to advance her own purposes, Maya has an extreme distaste for indiscriminate murder and loathes the terrorist tactics of the People of the Earth Radical Faction.
    • When introduced in Volume 10, she is enlisted to murder Kii-chan to advance her alliance with the Radical Faction, but she only battles Koutarou when he fights to protect Kii-chan and is impressed by Kii-chan's bravery and fortitude in the face of adversity.
    • By all accounts, she appears to have been an excellent mentor to Maki.
    • She joins Elexis to help prevent Vandiarion's attempt to use a biological weapon against civilian populations, and later joins him to support Koutarou against Vandarion in the final battle of the modern Coup d'etat.
  • Evil Mentor: To Maki. Notably, even as an enemy Maki continues to address her as "Maya-sama".
  • Evil Redhead: Red-haired, dark-clothed, and opposes the heroes.
  • Parental Substitute: Is likely this to Maki rather than just a mentor. Notably despite the fact that Maki left Darkness Rainbow and joined the heroes, she's actually proud she finally made her own decision.
    • Probably Justified because she brought Maki as a child when she was a slave and would've likely raised her before she can take care of herself.
  • Sinister Scythe: Can create a Laser Blade around her staff like Maki, but rather than a sword it takes the form of a scythe.
  • Unholy Matrimony: She and Elexis end up clicking during their initial three-way Villain Team-Up, which results in the two of them pursuing a romantic relationship (and as a side-effect, Darkness Rainbow becoming joined to Dragon Knight Industries at the hip). It turns out surprisingly healthy for both of them, though Maya admits that she has little interest in El's business meetings, and tends to roll her eyes whenever he starts monologuing about his plans to defeat Koutarou again.
  • We Can Rule Together: Tries this on Koutarou during their second bout. Of course, it doesn't work.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: Is rebuilt by the People of the Earth's Radical Faction as a spiritual-power Cyborg, making up for her lost magic with superhuman physical abilities and built-in weapons.
