  • Cactus Cushion: When Boscha falls off a ladder while putting up decorations outside of Hexside, Willow conjures up some plants underneath her to cushion her fall. Unfortunately for Boscha, this trope comes into play.
Boscha: (angry and in agony, while Luz and Willow remove the cactus needles and bandage her) You. Did that. On purpose.
Willow: Sorry, but those are the softest plants around.
  • Call-Forward: In The Hexsquad story arc, Vee mentions that character arcs can take a long time and with someone like Boscha it will probably take her decades to work through all her issues. This lines up with what's shown in comics following the cast's kids, as Boscha is still kind of a snob as an adult even if she's significantly nicer than her teenage self.
  • Canon Marches On: Happens fairly often, as Mark's comics are created alongside the actual series as it comes out. As a result, details appear that are contradictory to what happens in canon, such as Lilith using a time-traveling spell as opposed to Luz and her seeking out time pools or the impostor being actively malicious and being able to access the Demon Realm as opposed to being a scared basilisk who simply took over Luz's life because it was overall better than her earlier life.
    • An example of this would be one take of how Eda and King met; this comic has King meet Eda in present day Bonesborough over splitting her lunch and drumming up business for her human junk stand before deciding to stay with her, when "Echoes of the Past" revealed that she found him as an infant 8 years ago on an island far off the Isles' coast.
    • This comic shows Willow befriending Gus due to the latter trying to help her pass an abomination class assignment using his illusions and getting in trouble for it, a contrast to Willow helping Gus out of a panic attack when they were younger in "Labyrinth Runners".
    • Also happens in the comics itself as it makes new strips that focus on those reveals. For example, Vee is shown going on a fishing trip with Manny, but later on he would be revealed as having died some time ago.
    • Many of the comics made post-"King's Tide" but pre-"For the Future" that are set on the Collector ruled Boiling Isles are strikingly different from what would eventually be shown; The landscape is reduced to an endless sandy desert rather than more colorful, more child-geared. The Collector simply forces whoever they come across to play games instead of turning them into dolls/puppets for their role-play with King. Eda leads a nomadic resistance movement that consists of many characters who are either under the Collector's thumb, are holed up in Hexside, or are presumed to be turned into his toys.
    • A very minor example comes in one comic, where Luz performs Bard magic thanks to placing a music note-shaped glyph on an electric guitar. Season 2 would establish that there are only four glyphs (light, ice, plant, and fire), and that the way to use them to perform other kinds of spells is through different combinations.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor:
    • On Luz's 21st birthday, Eda gifts her some apple blood, now that she is of legal drinking age. It takes only one shot for Luz to get wasted enough to drunkenly admire Amity's many qualities very audibly to her girlfriend and fall over briefly before getting back up, to Amity's embarrassment, anguish, annoyance, and Eda's disappointment.
    • Surprisingly, Eda is guilty of this in one comic. After being goaded to try it by Eda, Camila learns that the apple blood Eda loves so much only has 5% alcohol in itnote . Camila then breaks out a stronger drink, and Eda becomes so hammered, Camila needs Luz's help to get her home.
  • Cassandra Truth:
    • Eda abuses this to get away with being found by an aircraft pilot, telling them via Etch-a-sketch that they'd sound insane for telling their superiors that the detected UFO was a woman flying a broomstick through the air. The pilot simply says the UFO was a weather balloon to call off the search.
    • Boscha tries to tell her mothers about Belos' plans to kill them all using the Draining Spell, but they dismiss it despite her protests, not acknowledging it until Belos activates it on the Day of Unity, at which point they are forced to admit to Boscha that she was right.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Downplayed. Due to King's relatively young age compared to his father, it turns out that using glyphs now drain his stamina since glyph magic uses the corresponding Titan's magic. After informing Luz, she realised that last night when she made a heart out of many light glyphs, King collapsed to the floor due to exhaustion.
  • Cast Full of Gay: In addition to the canonical relationships of Luz/Amity and Harvey/Gilbert, along with the canon Ship Tease of Vee/Masha and Eda/Raine being elevated to official status, many of MoringMark's comics have Ship Tease for other LGBTQ+ relationships, namely Alador/Darius, Gus/Mattholomule, Skara/Viney, Ayzee/Milan, and Pandora/Jay. The only non-LGBTQ+ relationships focused on tend to be Willow/Hunter, Camila/Manny, and Evelyn/Caleb.
  • Catch-22 Dilemma: Played with in that it's Amity who sees someone else's options like this. Hunter talks about whether he would want Camila or Darius as his legal guardian, but when he brings up both options, Amity realizes that eventually, Hunter would still be her brother in some way, note  leading to a massive Spit Take from her.
  • Cathartic Crying: "Letting It Out", which is set after the ending of "Reaching Out", has Amity comforting Luz and telling her to not bottle up her feelings to the people she loves. She's soon cut off as Luz starts crying and falls silent as she continues to hold her.
  • Cats Are Mean: Ghost can be mean when she wants, as Hunter experiences firsthand.
  • Caught Monologuing: In "Abomatron", Kikimora, now working for the Collector, arrives to collect Eda and everyone else. Unfortunately for Kiki, she opens her Abomatron's cockpit, and while she's ranting, Eda shoots her with a sleeping dart.
    Kikimora: You mother-
    (faceplants on the ground)
  • Cheer Up Episode: This appropriately named comic shows Ayzee being down after getting injured, so Ghost and Stringbean make her laugh to lift her spirits.
  • Chew-Out Fake-Out:
    • "Soda" has Luz and Amity having said drink, and when Camila catches them burping, this happens:
Camila: Oh no, you two are not starting a burping contest-
Amity: (tenses up) Sorry, Mrs. Noceda. I-
Camila: ...without me!! (Amity is surprised and Luz grins.)
    • Hunter ends up getting called to Hexside after Pandora hit her Rage Breaking Point in a fight with a bully and beat up half of the student body. He seems annoyed at first, only to admit that he's very proud of her.
    • In "Baby's First Weapon", Luz confronts Ayzee about attacking Tibbles with a fire glyph and looks ready to lay into her. Instead, she commends her for figuring out how to use glyphs for ranged weapons, leaving to tell Amity about it as Ayzee wonders if she's still in trouble, all while Jay puts the fire out by beating Tibbles.
  • Character Development: Played for Laughs. Luz's mental journey along with the time she was replaced with Vee is considered disturbing from an outsider's POV, as shown by her classmates witnessing it all.
  • Character Exaggeration: Amity only ever showed talent for engineering during a single scene in "Clouds on the Horizon" in canon. Here, she's a full-blown Wrench Wench who followed in her father's footsteps as an Abomination engineer as an adult rather than the Adventurer Archaeologist she was implied to be in the epilogue.
  • Childish Pillow Fight: Luz starts one with Amity and Hunter, but the latter two soon go after each other in actual combat that ends with them buried in feathers.
  • Christmas Episode: "Perfect Gift" is set on Christmas, in which Camila comforts Amity about her ruined gift by telling her the happiness she gives Luz is better than any gift.
  • Clone Army: In several comics such as this one, the Emperor's Coven has all their foot soldiers be clones of Steve, all of whom are named Steve. Belos even refers to them as his 'Steve Army' a few times.
  • Closest Thing We Got: "He Missed" has Tiny Nose be hit by Belos' attack instead of Luz, resulting in the Titan sighing and giving her his power instead.
  • Clothespin Nose Plug: In one strip, King develops motion sickness, covering Darius in vomit. Later, Darius lies covered with vomit, with Eberwolf disgustedly watching with a clothespin on his nose.
  • Coffee Shop AU Fic: One strip, aptly named "Hollow Mind but, like, Coffee Shop AU or something", has Luz and Hunter working in a coffee shop with Philip as their senior coworker. Philip acts like a caring and encouraging mentor to Hunter, but is really faking so he can convince Bump to hand the coffee shop to him and then sell it to a big corporation. At least until he finds out that Luz and Hunter had overheard his evil monologue.
  • Colony Drop: In "Running Out of Time", the Hexsquad returns to the Boiling Isles, only to discover the Collector found Eda's video game collection and, taking inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, gave the moon his split face and pulled it from the sky. They now have only two days (episodes) left to stop them before the moon crashes into the Boiling Isles and destroys it.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • At one point, Amity asks Luz to identify the flavor of her lip gloss while puckering her lips. Luz's response is to eye Amity's lips before asking Willow if she knows the flavor. After Willow states, that she doesn't know, it takes about a minute for it to click what Amity was attempting to insinuate.
    • Raine tells Eda they have a crush on someone studying potions with long, puffy hair, talent in grudgby, and whose last name begins with "C". A shocked Eda assumes Raine likes Lilith instead of her.
    • While attempting to incite an angry mob against "Marilyn", Jacob finally finds somebody who believes him about her using magic... since she used it to save her life after she was in a car accident. After a pause, Jacob asks "So, you are gonna help me, right?"
  • Commonality Connection:
    • After a rocky first meeting, Hunter and Hooty bond over their shared feelings of being unappreciated.
    • On another occasion, Hunter relates to a stray dog who was probably abused by someone it trusted, and it comes along with him.
    • This ends up being the reason why Luz received Alador's blessing to date Amity. Alador was as socially inept and Oblivious to Love regarding Odalia's feelings for him as Luz was in the human realm and with Amity's crush on her: he sees a kindred spirit in her.
    • After Vee brushes off all of Hunter's attempts to help her and she accuses him of feeling indebted to her, he confesses she's right and that he's trying so hard because they were both created by Belos as expendable tools. This gets Vee to be a little open to accepting his help.
    • After the Day of Unity, Darius and Alador come across Odalia working as a Fortune Teller and charging loads of snails for it. Darius asks if Alador misses her, and after he confirms he doesn't, the two share a moment of solidarity in both hating Odalia.
  • Competition Freak: Lilith and Eda take a sexuality test set up by Masha, but Lilith wants to know if she somehow did better than Eda did.
Masha: Congrats! You are ace with the possibility of being aroace. Here you go. (hands Lilith two patches that are colored like the ace and aroace pride flags)
Lilith: (looks at Eda, currently wearing a bisexual pride flag patch on her shirt) Does this mean I did better than my sister on the test, or what?
    Masha: It's not a competition, ma'am.
  • Compliment Fishing: This comic shows Hunter faking his death in order to get a few compliments from Luz and Amity. Too bad for him Luz catches on and decides to pull a Batman Gambit by slapping him.
  • Compulsive Liar: One of Luz's habits that the Collector inherits when he steals her body is a need to lie about their struggles so people don't worry about them.
  • Cone of Shame: Hooty needs to wear one in one comic after he scratches himself too much, but refuses to go along with it. Luz manages to get him to wear one by dressing up as Kikimora for Halloween.
  • Continuity Nod: Comics created during the post-season 2 hiatus do have a loose sense of continuity. For example;
    • Most Earthside comics set after "Blending In" show the Hexsquad using concealment stones that Gus made to hide their ears in public;
    • Ones featuring Eda that came out after "Skara the Planner" usually have her wearing a wedding band;
    • Comics set after "Feeding Time" will occasionally show a palisman being fed through absorbing nutrients from a pot like plants.
    • In "Spending Time with their Palismen", the family portrait of Luz and the Blight family from "...Now a Silly One." can be seen in the background.
  • Contrived Coincidence:
    • Once, Amity attacks a boy who flirts with Luz and they discover he's working for the Emperor's Coven.
    • Parodied in "Post-Ending". When Luz and Amity go to a book signing for The Good Witch Azura, they meet the author, Mildred Featherwhyle, with Luz thanking her for changing their lives and revealing Amity is a real witch to her. Mildred then proceeds to reveal that she's also a witch from the Boiling Isles too, had moved to the Human Realm after Belos banned Wild Magic, has her own portal door, and owns a research paper written by Philip called "How to befriend the Collector in 5 simple steps". Luz is left exasperated that there was someone who had everything they needed the entire time, and they just happened to be the author of her favorite book series.
    • Happens again in "Once A Fan...". Ayzee finds one of Luz and Amity's old Good Witch Azura books, and after Luz talks about moving on after the series ended (a nod to the fact that the comic was uploaded the same day as the series finale of the show these characters are from), Amity bursts in screaming to let her wife know that more Azura media was just announced, much to their collective joy.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment:
  • Cool Old Lady: Eda qualifies to an even greater degree by the time the Hexsquad's kids are in high school than she did in the show (given that she actually is as old she looks now), taking part in underground fights and pretending to be a feeble old lady just to screw with Ayzee and her friends.
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: Luz and Amity are shown to still be "The Good Witch Azura" fans even after having Ayzee, but they take it even further in "Grom Factor", where #10 has Milan find them roleplaying as Azura and Hecate respectively, the two still wearing their cosplays when they pull their Big Damn Heroes moment in #13.
  • Crazy-Prepared:
    • On the off chance Vee's ever caught in public in her true form, Camila has a pair of memory tweezers stored away to erase the memory of whoever saw her.
    • The reason Amity's reflexes are fast enough to counter Hunter's Flash Step is thanks to all the pranks she endured from her older siblings.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: While Terra is far more skilled at plant magic than Willow, she's helpless in hand-to-hand combat, as the physically fit Willow demonstrates.
  • Crush Blush: As is to be expected, Luz and Amity multiple times. Willow and Hunter get plenty of these post-"King's Tide" on Earth, & Vee and Masha also share one when they get together. In comics based around the Hexsquad's children, Ayzee and Milan have some toward each other.
  • Crush Filter:
  • Cue the Flying Pigs: Boscha says she'll stop calling Willow "half-a-witch" when pigs fly. When Luz using Stringbean doesn't get her to say it, Eda kicks Tibbles over their heads.
  • Culture Clash: In the Human Realm, exchanging jewelry is simply a friendly gesture or a cute thing between couples. In the Demon Realm, it's basically a marriage proposal.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: On one occasion, Jacob attempts to fight the Hexsquad, Masha, King and the Collector wearing his armor and armed with a taser. He ends up in a full-body cast with every bone in his body broken.
  • Curse Cut Short:
    • During Willow's Cathartic Crying moment under Hexside, Willow lets out more of her emotional hangups, including how she feared how Hunter was on the verge of death at the cemetery, and particularly how she was tired of getting bullied by Boscha. She then starts using an F word before we cut to a surprised Luz and Camila out in the woods, a shocked Boscha, Amity, and Matt in another tunnel, a stunned Lilith and Eda with King in front of them, and Belos-possessed Puppet Raine and Collector in his bedroom who are both perplexed by what they just heard.
    Willow: BOSCHA CAN GO F-
    (reaction shots)
The Collector: Woah, that's the loudest swear word I've ever heard!
Ayzee: Oh s-(covered by the comic border)
  • Cute Monster Girl: When some trick or treaters question Vee's "costume", they don't believe she's actually a demon because "Demons aren't supposed to be cute". This statement moves Vee so much, the next panel shows her wiping away some of her tears after giving away all the candy in the bowl she had to the three trick or treaters.
  • Cuteness Overload: When Luz meets Ghost for the first time, she can't help taking pictures on her phone every time the palisman does something adorable. Unfortunaltely she takes so many that eventually, the battery dies.
Amity: Don't worry. My dad'll make you a battery of some sort.
  • Cutting the Knot: Kikimora tries to immobilize Lilith with her coven sigil, however, due to the curse she's simply able to remove the hand the sigil is on.
    D
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Gus tries to coach Hunter on how to properly hug with Edric volunteering, but he reflexively ends up attacking Edric with his hand-to-hand combat techniques.
  • Dance Battler: "Shall We?" has Hunter and Willow pull off their own version of Luz and Amity's Grom dance, with Belos in place of Grometheus.
  • Darker and Edgier:
    • An alternate version of the Owl House is occasionally shown based on an earlier concept for the show, which was darker than what we have now, with Hooty being a much more feral predator that proclaims upon meeting Luz that he sees her as a thing to both play with and eat. This is still played for laughs regardless. Also the Demon Realm in this version might be the ACTUAL demon realm.
    • One even has a Content Warning placed in front of it. It shows the creation of Hunter from his perspective as he wakes up earlier than Belos or the Collector expected, and starts screaming in horror at the sight of his body being nothing but muscle. The final page reveals it to be a nightmare Hunter is having before he gazes at the scars on his hands, implying a connection between the two.
    • As of the Season 2 finale, most comics have been split between the Hexsquad's experiences on Earth and the witches' survival in the Collector's remade Boiling Isles. That said, there have still been comedic strips in the Boiling Isles.
  • Date Peepers: When Willow and Hunter are on a date, Gus tries spying on them, only to find Darius doing the same next to him. They proceed to argue who should have the current spot they are at and get into a Wimp Fight that gives their presence away to the daters, who uncomfortably try to pretend that they are still unaware.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Played straight with Odalia and initially downplayed and eventually subverted with Alador with respect to Lumity. The former clearly does not like the fact that her daughter is dating Luz the human and spends multiple appearances in the comics trying to break up the young couple. Alador, in one strip, is content with letting them date but makes clear that he does not fully approve of the relationship until a conversation with Luz causes him to realize they aren't that different, after which he gives his full blessing to the couple.
    • Hunter and Willow use this to their advantage in another comic. When they capture the remains of Belos in a jar, their method of torture is to tell him that they're dating and make a show of holding hands in front of him.
  • Dead Alternate Counterpart: Willow and Gus once knew someone named Lusine, a witch who looked very similar to Luz and was just as gung-ho about trying new things, as it turned out she apparently died a year ago after downing two bottles of human soda and a handful of mints.
Willow: (somberly) She was so young.
Luz: (horrified) Yup, definitely sounds like me.
  • Dead All Along: One strip in the Alpha world has Belos explain to Luz that the "Demon Realm" is actually some form of Hell and that the portal door Luz remembered entering through was actually the headlight of an oncoming car that ran her over after running off in the rain and tripping on the curb. Also counts as Death of a Child.
  • Deadly Euphemism: Subverted. It seems that Luz is using one, but she turns out to mean it literally, as in "take care of Stringbean while I'm gone".
  • Deadpan Snarker: Turns out Gus mastered being one from watching Amity. Unfortunately, he doesn't know how to keep from mouthing off to the wrong person.
  • Death by Despair: In this comic, after its companion dies, the Titan falls near its final resting place, eventually decaying into the Boiling Isles.
  • Death Equals Redemption: In this strip, as Hunter delivers the final blow to Belos, Belos finds himself as Philip Wittebane meeting Caleb in a state of limbo. Caleb, despite being murdered by Philip centuries ago, still hasn't given up on saving his brother's soul and offers him a chance to make amends. Philip, moved by this offer, takes it and the scene cuts to Belos in the real world dying, apologizing to Caleb for everything he has done.
  • Declaration of Protection: Since he knows he'll outlive his friends, Hooty convinces Lilith to let him make one for her as she lives out a long life. By the time she reaches old age, he continues to uphold this vow.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: "The Kissing Game" depicts Luz trying to score a point in a game where she and Amity sneak up on each other to give surprise kisses, yet it's difficult to sneak up on Amity. She manages to get a point when Gus tricks Amity with an illusion of Luz and Amity internally takes it hard.
  • Déjà Vu:
    • Amity gets this feeling when she sees Luz manage to charm an angry cat after a few seconds when she was initially hostile towards her.
    • This comic showing Luz trapped in a "Groundhog Day" Loop pretty much speaks for itself with its title.
  • Delayed Reaction: When Belos gets hit with a flaming arrow, he doesn't start screaming until his whole arm starts catches fire.
  • Demonic Possession: Belos attempts this on Willow to break Hunter. It then turns out the Hexsquad wanted him to do that so he'd end up in an abomination and free Raine from their possession.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: After being praised for learning how to drive in a single day, Hunter starts to do more chores around the house in order to get more compliments from Camila.
Camila: Your friend really likes doing chores.
Luz: Nah, he just doesn't get compliments often, ...or at all.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: In "Willow with a Dark Side", when Gus describes the Gympie-Gympie plant, Willow fantasizes about using it to torture Boscha, into leaving them alone. She then notices her friends staring at her with horrified expressions, prompting her to ask this trope. They immediately confirm it in unison.
  • Did You Die?: A variation occurs in the Pandora mini-series. When Willow and Hunter learn that Pandora had accidentally assaulted Jay with her head plant, they ask what happened to Jay, who immediately turns out to be sitting right near by and responds in a deadpan tone that "she died" and that it was "such a tragedy".
  • Did You Get a New Haircut?: The shaggy-haired kid says this as Vee reveals her true form.
  • Die or Fly: Downplayed. Upon returning to the human world, Luz has broken several school records during gym class. When Principal Hal asks how she got so strong, Luz remarks that it's due to summer camp. What really happened was that she poked a werewolf in the Boiling Isles and wound up running, swimming and cycling away from it.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: The Titan's canine companion had been fatally injured by a wild canine Titan, dying as the Titan holds its head gently.
  • Diplomatic Impunity: Inverted by of all people Luz, who abuses her diplomatic immunity to help Eda smuggle cheap beer into the Isles.
  • Disability-Negating Superpower: Downplayed. Eileen isn't actually disabled in any way that we know of, but the fact that she lacks a mouth makes it difficult for people to understand her when she talks. Gus offers to help by tutoring her in illusion magic so she can conjure up messages for people to read.
  • Disapproving Look: Implied to be made by Luz and Amity towards Hunter when he resorts to having Willow carry him to catch up to the couple in a three-legged race.
  • Discriminate and Switch: One comic has Odalia tell Luz she doesn't want her to date Amity. Luz asks if this is because she's a girl, but Odalia doesn't care about that; she just thinks Luz is too low-class.
  • Distant Reaction Shot: In one strip, upon being encouraged by Hunter to express her feelings, Willow declares she's tired of being bullied before yelling "BOSCHA CAN GO F-", with her yell being so loud that everyone on the isles hears her.
Collector: Wow, that's the loudest swear word I ever heard.
  • Distracted by the Sexy:
    • Titan Luz, King, and the Hexsquad prepare to fight the Archivists... except for Amity, who's too distracted by her girlfriend's Titan form.
    • After a tiring day at the University of Wild Magic, Eda wants to go on a picnic with Raine, but they decline as they're still working on the sigil removal procedure, and ask to reschedule. Eda conceeds, and decides to keep them company while they work. While in Harpy form. Raine caves.
      Harpy Eda: (smugly) Go on.
      Raine: What are you doing?
Eda: What? I'm just sitting here, doing nothing.
      (Raine glares)
      (later)
      Eda: Yay!
      Raine: (blushing) I...I couldn't concentrate.
  • DIY Dentistry: Apparently, having a cavity on the Boiling Isles is treated by having someone tie a string to the tooth and pulling it out with the force of a griffin, as Luz learns the hard way.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": After bonding with Steve, Lilith asks him to call her by her first name instead of "ma'am".
  • Do Wrong, Right: "Morning Lecture" depicts Eda's time as Headmaster of the University of Wild Magic, with her classes specializing in this, teaching students to never trust authority or people in positions of power due to the nature of absolute power corrupting absolutely. None of her students actually showed up to the lecture though. Eda couldn't be more proud.
  • Doesn't Know Their Own Birthday:
    • One comic shows that Hunter never knew his own birthday because Belos never told him when it was, and he never bothered to ask. After learning this, Luz, along with Willow and Gus, decides to throw a little surprise party for Hunter. While he's unhappy at first, he eventually starts to enjoy himself and decides that he will celebrate his birthday every year on the same day as the party.
    • Another comic has a similar idea with Vee, only this time, even though Luz found a file detailing when Vee was created, Vee decides against learning that information. Instead, she chooses to call the day she first came to the Human Realm and met Camila her birthday.
  • Don't Ask:
    • Amity has an abomination that follows her around and imitates her every move. When she tries swatting a fly, she lifts her book when it lands and tries to slam her book on it. Unfortunately, the abomination does the same and ends up whacking Amity herself on the head. Luz notices it, prompting Amity to respond with this trope.
    • One comic is actually named this. During their battle at Eclipse Lake, Hunter gloats at how Amity can't land a hit on him while he's teleporting around her. The last time, she figures out where he'll be and hits him in the face with a frying pan. When he delivers the portal key to Belos who inquires about the new gap in his teeth, Hunter says he doesn't want to talk about it.
  • Doofy Dodo:
    • In one comic, Luz's Palisman egg hatches into this. While Amity assumes she would be disappointed, Luz loves it.
    • The Collector finds one of these during a "game" Luz set up. Luz confesses that she only did it because of how clingy the Collector has been lately, and while the two have a heart-to-heart about spending time together, Amity is seen trying to keep the bird at bay.
  • Double Date: A recurring setup for comics is Luz, Amity, Vee, and Masha on double dates at a diner in the human realm, like this one set on Valentine's Day.
  • Double Take:
    • After Luz, Willow, and Gus get expelled, Amity breaks her pencil in the middle of a class. Just then the image of Luz in the banned poster next to her hands Amity a pencil. Amity accepts it before realizing where she got the pencil.
    • The title of one of Mark's comics, which also features an example. As Camila and Vee look at the flowers they got for Manny's death anniversary, the cheerleader girl walks by, only barely noticing Vee in her basilisk form before she switches back to Luz's appearance.
  • Dramatic Irony: Amity finds a time pool and sees Luz making out with a purple-haired girl, pissing her off, unaware that it's actually her future self.
    Amity: Who's that purple-haired Witch?!
    E
    F
  • Face Death with Dignity: Darius graciously accepts the apology from the other Coven Heads when they realize the Day of Unity was meant to kill them all. He also calls it "a bummer", but is content that he at least tried to stop it.
  • Face Doodling:
    • Luz does this to Hunter as payback for threatening her life to get the portal key from Amity.
    • Eda selects this as a punishment for Odalia regarding her attempt to guilt Luz into ending her relationship with Amity. Alador performs a Spit Take upon seeing the results.
  • Face Palm: In one strip, Luz finds the other half of Amity's Grom note when it blows into her face. However, she reads it upside-down, thinking that it says "Znf". Cue Willow, Gus, Skara, Boscha, Belos, and even Camila (who is in the human realm and is completely unaware of Luz's error) responding with this trope, while Amity sighs in relief after tensing up for a moment.
  • Face Your Fears: After returning to the Human Realm, Luz hesitates to enter her home and see her mother. Luckily, Amity joins her as to repay Luz for helping her face her own fears.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama:
    • Belos tries to explain his plan in a classic dramatic villain monologue to Eda, Luz, and King when they confront him, only for Hooty to keep interrupting him with a joke, to the point where he screams and collapses in frustration while Luz offers her sympathies and pats him on the shoulder.
    • His attempt to task his scouts to reinforce the Titan's butt ends up not working, for obvious reasons.
  • Failed a Spot Check: At one point Camila and Luz had to trick Vee into noticing a family photo featuring her as it had been up for several hours and she'd missed it entirely.
  • Fair-Play Whodunnit: Parodied in one strip. When Gus is investigating who could have killed Kikimora (she's just lying face down on the airship they are in with a dagger embedded in her back and in pain), Hunter arrives on the airship, pointing out that anyone can just come and go onto the ship using their staff, meaning anybody could be the murderer, much to Gus' horror. Meanwhile, behind him, the suspects (Luz, Amity, Eda, King, Willow, and Steve) are each equipped with a weapon out of nowhere, preparing to take their turns killing Kikimora.
Hunter: (to Steve) Can I join?
Kikimora: (Reaching out in agony) Help.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: As King looks further along Tarak and the Titan Trappers' wall art, it becomes clear that it was all just a Self-Insert Fic.
  • Family Theme Naming: Viney's pet griffin Puddles is shown to have a little sister named Muddy.
  • Famous Ancestor: In "Well that explains Ayzee's freckles.", it's revealed that Amelia Earhart is Amity's great grandmother, having found herself in the Boiling Isles after her real life disappearance.
  • Fan-Created Offspring: Comics set post-series tend to depict Luz/Amity, Willow/Hunter, Boscha, and Skara/Viney having daughters named Ayzee, Pandora, Jay (Boscha Junior), and Milan, respectively.
  • Fantastic Fantasy Is Mundane: Played for Laughs. The Human Appreciation Society plays a tabletop RPG where they roleplay as ordinary humans and do things like argue with baristas about their membership cards being expired.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Appliance: Discussed by Gus, who notes how most technology on Earth seems to have Demon Realm counterparts. Although he doesn't consider Penstagram to be the internet equivelant, but rather the Dark Lord, who dispenses unlimited knowledge at the cost of slowly driving people to madness and eroding their sense of morality.
    Luz: Okay yeah pretty much.
  • Fantasy Helmet Enforcement: Played for Laughs when Luz is in a bike chase with a werewolf, with both of them wearing matching skull-shaped helmets (which results in the one the werewolf is wearing being far too small).
  • The Fatalist: Selene explains to Luz and Amity that she already knew the Day of Unity would happen a year in advance but didn't say anything because she also saw that everything would work out just fine in the end. That, and it's impossible to change your own future.
Selene: I already know how my life will turn out... what job I will take... how I will die... and we all can't help but follow the script. Because free will is an illusion and we're all slaves of time! [broken laughter]
  • "Fawlty Towers" Plot: After one of her classmates accidentally sees a picture of Vee in her true form, Luz claims that it's just a giant plushie. When the classmate wants one for herself, Luz has to make one herself, and right when it seems like the situation was resolved even more classmates want plushies too, meaning Luz and Amity have to make dozens of them.
  • Fearless Fool: Luz is regularly shown to be very fearless when it comes certain challenges... which ends up resulting in bodily harm for her. One such incident being "Classic Luz", where she attempts running up a track that loop-de-loops despite Amity practically begging her not to. She manages to turn upside down before gravity kicks in and she nearly breaks her neck, only avoiding any real injury thanks to Amity summoning some Abomination goo. When retelling the story to Camila later, Amity has to thank Camila for keeping her alive this long, with Camila asking Amity to keep doing the same.
  • Fight for the Last Bite: Hunter and Willow have an arm wrestling match to decide who gets the last French fry, though the twist is that since they were both offering the other to take it earlier, Willow winning the match means Hunter gets to eat it.
  • Finger Poke of Doom: Averted twice. In one comic, for a moment, the Collector almost does this to Skara, but Boscha manages to call a time-out before the Collector can touch her. In another, the Collector is about to do the same to Amity, and prompting Luz to jump in the way. Though the Collector does tap her on the nose, it ends up being harmless, as the god-child simply wishes to force people to play games with them forever, and goes to hide, as Luz is now "it". The girlfriends take advantage of the situation and leave the Collector in his hiding spot, pretending to struggle to find them.
  • Flipping the Bird:
  • Flower-Pot Drop: Invoked by one of the guys bullying Pandora, who throws a pot down onto her head.
  • Following in Relative's Footsteps: If this comic is anything to go by, Eda really will take up palisman carving from Dell one day.
  • Forced Transformation: In an early comic, Boscha turns Luz into an otter and Willow goes after her to make her reverse it.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: When Luz demonstrates a 'make plummeting object float safely instead of going splat' (Safety Hover) glyph combo, Lilith expresses amazement and asks what inspired her to create it. At which point Luz wordlessly side-eyes the woman who hurled her off a bridge into a spike-lined abyss mere months ago.
Lilith: Oh, right. Forget I asked.
  • For Halloween, I Am Going as Myself: In one comic, while the other kids get ready for Halloween, Vee plans on going trick or treating in her regular basilisk form. In another comic, Vee hands out candy to trick-or-treaters in basilisk form.
  • Found Family: As in canon, Amity prefers the inhabitants of the Owl House and their surrounding allies to her natural home, much to Odalia's confusion.
  • Foul Waterfowl: During his time in the Human Realm, Belos tries to find a new host while near a lake. Unfortunately, the only thing nearby is a Canadian Goose, which begins chasing him the second he grabs it.
  • Freudian Excuse:
    • Boscha used to be a victim of bullying herself, due to being a three-eyed half-demon half-witch hybrid, so she decided to start fighting back with verbal assault to make sure nobody would mess with her ever again. On another occasion, Willow realizes Boscha keeps bullying her because she's jealous that Willow seems to be better at everything than her.
    • In one comic, it's implied that Odalia suffered through the same kind of abuse she puts through Amity; just as she was about to slap her daughter, she sees Luz come to her defense. That triggers a flashback in which a younger Alador did the same thing for her. Realizing what she was about to do, she starts crying and eventually leaves the room.
  • Freudian Slip:
    • Luz finds out about Amity's feelings for her while reading an Azura fanfiction she wrote, because Amity accidentally wrote down Luz's name instead of Azura's when narrating her OC's secret crush.
    • When Luz is demonstrating how to use a glyph combo to form an ice cube, Amity shows up to greet Luz. Luz ends up conjuring a statue of her and Amity dancing. Cue them blushing.
Amity: (blushing) Am I interrupting something?
Eda: (amused) No no, this is getting interesting.
    • While Luz relates to Amity that in spite of the fact that there are multiple realms out there that she could of wandered into and many people she could have met, in the end, it was Amity she met and fell in love with, Amity is charmed by her speech and whispers to Luz to marry her in the heat of the moment. Luz doesn't fully pick up on it and asks for a repeat to which Amity nervously denies having said anything.
    • When she discovers the glyph combination for Abomination magic, Amity holds Luz's hands to help her learn to mold the Abomination she created, but because Amity was so happy to be this close to Luz, the Abomination started to trying to kiss her.
    • Gus excitedly informs Luz that he bought a gun of all things. When he clarifies he bought it from an old woman at the grocery store, Luz realizes he bought gum.
    • As Luz carries most of the groceries she, Camila, and Gus bought from the market she ends up saying the weight is about two-thirds of Amity's, so Camila figures her strength comes from carrying her girlfriend in her arms. To Luz's (initial) embarrassment, Gus proceeds to continuously make cracks about it until all their friends know, including Amity.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Boscha's aware she is this to a degree once; after she gets drunk during Cat's birthday party, Cat calls Amity to come to pick her up since Skara and Amelia have already left. While under the influence, Boscha calls herself a loser since she had to be picked up by someone who doesn't even hang out with her anymore.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision:
    • "What if TOH was a Telltale game?" ends with one; Luz either gives Belos the portal key to save Amity's life or destroys it and let Belos kill her.
    • After their divorce, Alador negotiates full custody of their children with Odalia, letting her keep the manor, Blight Industries, and all their profits from the company. Odalia also demands his bug collection, and Alador very briefly considers it before Amity scolds him.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang:
    • At one point, Skara and Amelia make time to hang out with Luz and Willow for an afternoon instead of with Boscha.
    • Discussed in one comic. Amity goes over to Willow's house to ask for advice on what she and Luz could do for their next date. When Willow asks why she would ask her about this, Amity admits she needed to find an excuse to hang out with her. Willow is more than happy to do so, and the two decide to have a sleepover that night.
    • Another comic points out how awkward it is for Hunter and Vee to interact by themselves, given how Hunter used to be the Golden Guard and Vee was created by the Emperor's Coven.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Back when she was still at Hexside, Eda was forced to help Principl Faust set up a training program for students, and Faust allowed Eda to pick a name for it. What name did she go with? Superb Hexside's Incredible Tournament, or SHIT. As soon as the name is revealed, most of the students start laughing.
  • Furry Reminder: While Boscha is bonding with Severine, she finds the latter likes having her neck scratched, and even starts purring in response.
  • Future Imperfect: The Bonesborough library's museum wing has multiple mislabled objects as a consequence of Belos' half century long rule leaving a lot of gaps or edits in the official record. Enna manages to land herself a job there since she's a native of the time period and can correct the inaccuracies.
  • Fuzz Therapy:
    • Stringbean tends to invoke this. In one comic, she turns into a cardinal for Hunter to nuzzle since Flapjack is gone and he now lacks a palisman. In another, she takes a cloud-like form for Luz to squish when she draws a blank on her brainstorming to rebuild the Boiling Isles.
    • Viney's pet griffin, Puddles, serves as this to Camila in one comic, in exchange for some human realm dog treats.
    • A variant occurs when Vee lets Masha hug her tail, which, according to Masha themself, is incredibly comfortable.
Masha: It's... like, hugging a cloud.
    G
  • The Gadfly: One comic has Luz and Amity acting sweet and affectionate around each other for the sake of annoying Boscha.
  • Gargle Blaster: One comic has Eda attempt to do this to Camila by having her drink apple blood, only for her to be unaffected by it due to the drink having an average of 5% alcohol content at most. Instead, Camila introduces Eda to a flaming tequila shot, and Eda gets instantly smashed after one glass.
  • Genre Savvy:
  • Ghost Reunion Ending: Parodied when Manny is shown watching over Luz and Camila, only to get shocked when he notices Caleb watching Hunter and Willow.
  • Gilligan Cut: When Darius questions if Raine is sure no one knows they're about to invade Belos' mind, Raine assures him that no one knows and no one can hear them on the castle roof. We immediately cut to Hunter in his room below with a cup of coffee and an annoyed expression.
  • Girls Stare at Scenery, Boys Stare at Girls: At first partly inverted in "Cliche"; While riding on Puddles with Skara, Viney calls Skara beautiful as she admires the sight of the raised Left Arm. Viney, who panics when Skara catches her staring, deconstructs the trope by saying she was parodying it and Skara calls it the "king of cliches".
Viney: [To herself in her mind as she laughs for a long time] Viney, you effing coward.
  • Given Name Reveal:
    • Luz and Amity's daughter was initially unnamed, but it's eventually revealed in "Baby's First Weapon" that her full name is "Ayzee Noceda-Blight".
    • Similarly, Hunter and Willow's daughter is eventually shown to be named Pandora in "Hideout".
  • Glasses of Aging: Multiple post-series comics show Luz wearing glasses by the time her daughter is a teenager.
  • God Guise: In "Not Technically Lying", Vee tries to apply for Gravesfield High, but since she has no birth certificate and no legal documents of her existence, Principal Hal almost rejects her, until Hooty appears and declares that Vee attending the school is part of the almighty's plan, scaring Hal into accepting her. We see that they accomplished the Holy Backlight using a flashlight and Hooty was hiding in Vee's backpack.
  • Gone Horribly Right: To get Principal Faust to lay off his strict rules, Eda tries to set him up on a date with Terra Snapdragon. The two hit it off and Faust no longer rules Hexside with an iron fist... because he left to join Terra in tormenting children and abusing power across the Boiling Isles.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Willow's parents act as this, as Harvey states that the more Willow hates him, the more she listens to Gilbert. Willow asks them to stop, saying she doesn't want to dislike either and doesn't like the idea of it.
  • Good Parents:
    • Amity promises baby Ayzee that she'll be one in this comic.
Amity: Look, I might not be the best mom in the world, but I promise I'll never hurt you. I'll never make you feel worthless, I'll teach you good morals, and at the same time, I'll let you make important decisions on your own. And most importantly [pecks Ayzee on her head], I'll always be there when you need me.
    • After everything that's happened, Alador becomes one over time, merely having faith in his children or being there for them being good enough.
  • Gossip Evolution: While discussing their relationship, Willow reveals she already knew Hunter had a crush on her. He asks how that's possible. As it turns out, he talked about his confusion over his feelings for Willow to Flapjack, who mentioned it playing a card game with Ghost, which she mentioned to Emmiline Bailey Marcostimo, who eagerly told Clover. By that point the confusion part had been lost and Clover buzzes to Willow that Hunter definitely has a crush on her.
  • Grammar Nazi: King asks Tarak why he didn't just send Eda a message instead of mailing a letter. He reveals that he did try that first, but Eda blocked him after she used "you're" instead of "your" in a sentence and he corrected her. King is exasperated.
  • Grand Romantic Gesture:
    • Under the guise of wanting a rematch in a witch's duel, Amity asks Luz out by arranging her fallen abominations to spell out "Will you be my girlfriend?" Luz is blown away and says "yes".
    • In another strip, Luz uses a number of light glyphs to create a heart shape on Amity's lawn. Unfortunately, upon learning that King is drained whenever she uses glyphs, she realizes this caused him to keel over out cold.
  • Greater-Scope Villain:
    • Combined with Sequel Hook. "Ready for the Battle" depicts the Archivists as this, the Collector returning to the Boiling Isles to warn of their incoming arrival and declaring they need to keep them away from King, with the Hexsquad preparing for a major fight as a result... sans Amity who is too busy being enamored and having her Jaw Drop over seeing Luz in her Titan form.
    • Comics focusing on Ayzee's teenage years have the Titan Trappers set up as this, with multiple mentions of the possibility of a war between them and the Boiling Isles on the horizon.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: Luz traps herself in one after seeing Hooty shedding his skin. Unfortunately, after taking a sip of a memory potion to erase the minute she saw Hooty to write a note for her to not look outside, the full minute passes, and she ends up entering the room, as the beginning demonstrates her coming out from a yellow cloud, further showing that she has done this multiple times already.

  • Jaw Drop:
    • In one strip, when Willow angrily declares she's sick of Boscha bullying her and yells that "[she] CAN GO F-" so loud that everyone hears it, with Boscha reacting with this.
    • In one comic, this is Amity's reaction to Luz's Titan form. Willow points Gus towards this without even looking, prompting him to push it closed.
  • Jump Scare: Performed by Luz as a prank on Hunter. Hunter attempts to do this to Luz as payback, but hides in a leaf pile she's preparing to burn.
