To-do list:

    Original post
I have a feeling Stupid Statement Dance Mix may be having an identity crisis as to whether or not it is YMMV. While a subtrope of Instant Humiliation: Just Add YouTube!, it was also listed under Memetic Mutation, adding to the confusion.

A wick check of 60 wicks (10 more than recommended for this trope) gave these results:

  • In-Universe examples: 14/60 (23.3%)
  • YMMV with context: 8/60 (13.3%)
  • YMMV acknowledged by cast: 4/60 (6.7%)
  • Just a weblink: 17/60 (28.3%)
  • ZCE or other issues: 16/60 (26.7%)
  • Unsortable: 1/60 (1.7%)

Proposals:

  • Make this a YMMV item. On-page examples may have to be split between in universe and not.
  • Disambiguate between Memetic Mutation, Instant Humiliation Just Add Youtube, and any other suitable pages.
  • Make it a fan-speak term. This will not be mutually exclusive to disambiguating.

Wick check:

Wick check for Stupid Statement Dance Mix.

The problem: Said to be a subtrope of Instant Humiliation: Just Add YouTube!, while at the same time indexed under Memetic Mutation. This gives the impression that some uses are actually YMMV.

Wicks checked: 60/50

     In universe (14/60, 23.3%)
  1. Involuntary Dance: In The Lord of the Rings, equipping a treasure called the "Disco Phial" allows you to see in the dark, while causing everyone in the immediate area to dance uncontrollably — which can be a pain if you're in multiplayer mode and your partner does this. It also changes the music to an electronic Stupid Statement Dance Mix using lines from all three movies. This continues until you put the Phial away. Played in game, so it counts
  2. The Diss Track: Strong Bad accidentally creates one in the Strong Bad Email "Sibbie". When a viewer asks Strong Bad to write a song about him, Strong Bad refuses and states he will "never, ever, ever write a song about The Sibbie"... The Cheat ends up turning it into a song that became a big hit. Strong Bad then screams, "I freaking hate Sibbie!" and that immediately ends up becoming a song as well.
  3. Awesome.Transformers Prime: His actions before he shuts himself down also deserve mention. He may have been captured by the Autobots, but he doesn't make it easy for them, trolling Optimus by making a Stupid Statement Dance Mix out of his question then emitting a sonic pulse when he threatens to use less civil methods of interrogation. Any other Decepticon would have cracked. Megatron's faith in Soundwave was well justified.
  4. Characters.Borderlands The Pre Sequel: And There Was Much Rejoicing: After he's dead, much of the town of Concordia is openly glad he's gone and announcements regularly play to celebrate the fact. A sidequest also opens up where Jack, still not satisfied with killing him, decides to pay his Last Disrespects and has the Vault Hunters splice his voice with a music remix ("I'm the biggest arse on the moon!"), decapitate his statue's head, strap it to a rocket / firework and then fire it in front of town when the music and fireworks ensue.
  5. DarthWiki.Ratchet And Clank Infinity The Second Coming: A Holotuber turned a leaked video of Dr. Nefarious freezing and playing Lance and Janice into this and quickly becomes a viral video, and its implied it was Qwark's doing to get back at Nefarious for legally stopping him from publishing his memoir. Nefarious is not amused when he finds out about it.
  6. Funny.Brooklyn Nine Nine Season 1:Rosa tries getting through to the kids, with no more success than Amy. Her threat gets turned into a Stupid Statement Dance Mix, and she is left baffled and close to tears.
  7. Heartwarming.Phineas And Ferb: Only this show could turn a Stupid Statement Dance Mix into a charming duet for its Official Couple, concluding in Candace playfully teasing Jeremy for his occasional inability to communicate clearly. Done within the work, so it qualifies.
  8. Homestuck.Tropes M To Z: Vriska's Nicholas Cage shrine is accompanied by one of these. The full version later makes it onto Vol. 6 of the soundtrack. Partial context, but there's mention it's In-Universe
  9. Manga.Yuyushiki: The girls turn the phrase ""Just kidding" just slipped out!" into an impromptu song during episode two as an in-universe example.
  10. Quotes.Old Media Are Evil: "Well, if you want to try and turn this into some anti-war protest, expect to hear your "Mountain of Conflict" soundbite everywhere: from ringtones to a fucking dance mix on YouTube. And I will marshal all the media forces of darkness to hound you to an assisted suicide."
  11. Recap.Rockos Modern Life S 3 E 4 Fish N Chumps Camera Shy: The Chameleon Brothers' edited version of Rocko's home movie uses repeated sound clips of Heffer and Rocko during the footage of Rocko in his house naked.
  12. Series.Car Share: John is mortified (and Kayleigh amused) to discover that his angry rant at a cyclist has been edited and autotuned to Jump (For My Love) and put online.
  13. Series. The Really Loud House: "The Blemish Dilemish" has someone make one of these out of Lincoln's butt pimple speech. According to Leni, it's gone viral and has been seen by 8 million people.
  14. VideoGame.Borderlands The Pre Sequel: Jack will give a side quest to launch a Rocket with the head of the Meriff's statue attached to a Dubstep remix of his last confession. While the Vault Hunters might not think so, it is glorious.
Actually YMMV (with context) (8/60, 13.3%)
  1. Eat That: During a discussion of this trope on The Ricky Gervais Show, producer Karl Pilkington commented that eating a kangaroo penis in the morning would be too difficult. His clarification, "I could eat a knob at night," became an internet meme, spawning dance remixes, t-shirts, public graffiti, and a story in the New York Times.
  2. AwesomeMusic.Kirby: The second stage theme of Gourmet Race finally gets a remix after 24 years (not counting Super Star Ultra). Knowing how popular it is with fans, being used in an Octagon Stupid Statement Dance Mix and starting the "We Are Number One" meme and appearing in the King for Another Day tournament on SiIvaGunner, fans were more than pleased.
  3. Creator.Team Four Star: "Moustache", from DBZ Abridged episode 49 got a 3-minute treatment.
  4. Film.A Christmas Story: TBS made a set of these using clips of the film's most popular scenes, and uses them during their perennial marathon. Not in-universe
  5. Memes.Breaking Bad: "Augh!" *Forklift noises*Explanation
  6. NightmareFuel.Music: "Silent Bonk". It is a testament to how creepy Silent Hill music is that even having the Scout from Team Fortress 2 "bonk" over it fails to blunt the fear factor.
  7. ThePowerpuffGirls.Tropes R To S: The episode "Beat Your Green" gets remixed in the track "Broccoli Wars" by German DJ group Noisy Stylus.
  8. WesternAnimation.Fanboy And Chum Chum: "Put That Cookie Down" has a dance mix made from various permutations of the Dollar-nator saying the episode's title.
     YMMV acknowledged In-Universe (4/60, 6.7%)
This section is for Meme Acknowledgement cases.
  1. Reverse Psychology: The Colbert Report: Stephen Colbert often does this in a tongue-and-cheek manner with suggestions, such as stating explicitly that he doesn't want his interviews remixed into Stupid Statement Dance Mixes, especially not with excerpts from the audiobook version of "I Am America (And So Can You!)" mixed in, and particularly not from Chapter 7.
  2. Characters.Ru Pauls Drag Race Season 5: This catchy little number, which she often performs on tour.
  3. LetsPlay.Dr Disrespect: A fan sampled a tune that the Doc made up while playing PUBG with Halifax, and both were impressed by the end result.
  4. Radio. The News Quiz: One was made with Sandi's Pronunciation of "Eyjafjallajökull". This was then featured on the show itself.
     Just a weblink (17/60, 28.3%)
     Other/ZCE (16/60, 26.7%)
If there's not enough context...not even a weblink.
  1. Emotionally Tongue-Tied: In the Colbert Report parody of Bill O'Reilly's "We'll do it live!" outburst, Stephen's rage is triggered by having to read out the words "I'm sorry". Sinkhole
  2. Characters.Phineas And Ferb Candace Flynn (re: Catchphrase) "Mom. MOM!" They even made a Stupid Statement Dance Mix out of it.No context as to whether it's in-universe or not
  3. DontFearTheReaper.Live Action TV: The Grim Reaper is a guest on The Sifl and Olly Show in one episode. As it turns out, he's from Montreal, he's a Gemini, and he's into R & B music. Sifl and Olly even sing the Trope Namer song at the end of the show. He reappears during an infomercial for the Precious Roy Luxury Coffin to point out that he doesn't kill people, he just takes their souls to the afterlife after they die, after which the body just rots. And rots. And rots. Electric boogaloo, and rots. Sinkhole and word cruft
  4. Film.Planes Trains And Automobiles: A rare in-media example! The first time we hear this song is when Neal's luck reaches Rock Bottom once he misses the fucking ride back to the fucking rental car headquarters and is fucking forced to walk down the fucking highway and across a fucking runway, and again, during the first part of the closing credits, after "Every Time You Go Away."Does not explain the song itself and its contents
  5. Franchise.Touhou Project: ''It Stops at the Affected Area and Immediately Dissolves ~ Lunatic Udongein'', is a prime example due to how catchy it is, but quite a few of IOSYS' Touhou-inspired songs could easily count.First half is partial-context YMMV, second half is general.
  6. Funny.Noisepuppet: "Gotta reach Iraq by sundown!" "Up on top! Up on top! You'll be up on top! Up on top!"Sinkhole as written
  7. LargeHam.Live Action Films: Stupid Statement Dance Mix version viewable here. Subbullet Natter
  8. Memes.Sports: "They had us in the first half, I'm not gonna lie."Explanation  Sinkhole
  9. Music.Jonathan Coulton: He's done a few, such as "Beds Hurt My Booty". ZCE
  10. Radio. The Ricky Gervais Show: "I could eat a knob at night." ZCE
  11. Recap.The Simpsons S 5 E 16 Homer Loves Flanders: Rappin' Ronnie Reagan tape.
  12. Series.Stromberg: "'n Hund im Büro!?!" ("A dog in the office!?!") Look for it on youtube. ZCE
  13. ShoutOut.Starbound: The description for potato seeds says 'Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew.' The description for the potatoes themselves? "Po-ta-to." Sinkhole
  14. VideoGame.NARC: Your reward for beating the game. No joke. ZCE
  15. WebAnimation.Baman Piderman: "Drawing Song." ZCE
  16. WebAnimation. Two More Eggs: The Joshow Show episode "Click on My Ads". ZCE
     Unsortables (1/60, 1.7%)
  1. Alternate Music Video: Compare Fanvid and Stupid Statement Dance Mix, where fans compile alternate music videos using other content, sometimes in sync with the music. Compare statement

Also known as Sparta Mix videos.

I fail to see how it relates to Instant Humiliation: Just Add YouTube!, so just make it a pure Memetic Mutation subtrope.

Though I'm skeptical if it's actually noteworthy on its own (you can make anything into a song, so it's not really relevant to work's audience reactions) and maybe should just be merged with Memetic Mutation or YouTube Poop.

I'm leaning toward disambiguating. I feel like it might not be distinct enough from Memetic Mutation, especially considering the wicks are inconsistent and often in bad shape (particularly due to all the ZCEs, both vanilla and weblink-only). I'm against classifying this as Fan Speak unless someone can provide evidence that it's actual Fan Speak used offsite (which would mainly mean links to other sites using the term).

Edit: I also fail to see how this relates to Instant Humiliation: Just Add YouTube!. I'm positive that the Homestar Runner cartoon that provided The Diss Track example predates YouTube. Either that, or Instant Humiliation: Just Add YouTube! predates YouTube itself, and just became more noticeable and widespread after YouTube provided a more centralized place to host online videos. (Though I'm kind of going on a tangent at this point; the first paragraph of this post more important than this one.)

Looking at the oldest version of the page in the Internet Archive, I think this was created as a page for the category of meme, or from another point of view, as a genre of YouTube video similar to YouTube Poop. Note that the examples not only are mostly out-of-universe, but that the first few of them are applied to real-life "stupid statements".

If it were an in-universe trope, it would either be a subtrope or The Same, but More Specific of Instant Humiliation Just Add Youtube, since it would achieve the same effect of having everyone across the Internet make fun of the character's gaffe. It's just that I'm not sure that's what it was ever intended to be. But by the same token, I'm not sure if being YMMV is the same thing either, since its very title is in reference to applying it to real life, not a work.

Because it is effectively a form of transforming something pre-existing into a semi-original work, but where people might not be inspired to give each one their own work page, treating it similarly to YouTube Poop might be warranted. But you'd probably have to completely rearrange the examples to separate in-universe examples from real-life ones.

Also known as Sparta Mix videos.

Bringing up this related ATT query of mine that never went anywhere (slipped from my mind after a few hours of sleep and I never got around to making a Useful Notes page or a Just For Fun page).

Taking this quote at face value (and please note that these are just my opinions):

- Instant Humiliation: Just Add YouTube! is non-applicable for Sparta Remix examples on Stupid Statement Dance Mix. The majority of them aren't meant to humiliate other people, or any works. I can't attest to any non-SR examples, but from reading them, it seems like some would fit on Memetic Mutation.

- It could potentially be disambig'd to Memetic Mutation. It is a YMMV trope and Sparta Remixes as a genre are thought by the majority (i.e., outside of the fandom) to be memes that have grown popular over the years rather than a genre or an art form. As for the non-Sparta Remix examples on SSDM, they would be at home in MM.

- Stupid Statement Dance Mix as a name is not Fan Speak. Sparta Mix/Sparta Remix, on the other hand, is. Similar to YouTube Poop, it is an art form with its own community that has been growing on the Internet for years and continues to grow. There is a concern on the ATT query I linked that Sparta Remixes share one singular source, which is not necessarily true — most Sparta Remixes use existing works as sources, which includes the source that started it all (300). Some use real-life sources, but the majority do not.

But I digress, and my apologies if it sounds like I'm gushing — that certainly is not my intent. I agree with ~Morgan Wick in that Sparta Remixes are something that takes a pre-existing work and transforms it into something semi-original, and that we should treat it similarly to YouTube Poop. The rest of the examples can be disambiguated to Memetic Mutation.

429 now.

Meanwhile, I'm wondering where to move this example in Series.QI. Are we declaring Tropes Are Flexible and making it fit Voice Clip Song, or does it fit something else? There was another example, but it's not listed due to Weblinks Are Not Examples.

Edit: Asking "Is this an example" thread didn't give anything concrete, so sent to Trope Finder.

[up] Ah man, I've been trying to think about this one since I'm already familiar with the clip in question. I don't think it'd count as VCS because nothing's really edited, they just invent a song using the intended phrase that Stephen Fry misspeaks. ("They say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is")

[down] Lol yeah, fair. If nothing comes up, deleting'd be fine, as in my non-QI-watching (thus limited) experience, it's one of the best-known moments. If and when something fits, it'd be put right back on the page.
