    Pre-announcement
G5 will feature humans.
—10/19/2019
  • G4 didn't feature humans at all (Equestria Girls is another matter), so it's highly unlikely why they would in G5. Maybe they would feature humanoid/bipedal creatures like Capper and the other Klugetown denizens.
—08/07/2021

G5 will be a sequel to G4.
Taking place in the far future, it will follow a new group of ponies dealing with the real return of Grogar, as well as Hydia, Erebus, the Flores, Squirk, and Lavan. The series will be Darker and Edgier compared to G4, and instead of teaching friendship and other life lessons, it will be an action-adventure series with some pretty brutal violence.

While the new series will have a new cast of ponies, a few familiar faces will still be around, these being Twilight, Cadance, Flurry Heart, and Discord (since they're all immortal or at least nigh-immortal). Sunset Shimmer will also show up, because time in the human world flows differently than in Equestria, and Doctor Whooves will also still be around, now looking like Jodie Whittaker.

—10/19/2019
  • G5 does take place in the future of G4, but the tonal shift did not occur.

Contradicting above, G5 will be an Alternate Continuity with a past similar to G4.
—06/21/2020
  • Jossed. G5 is a direct sequel to G4.

    Post-announcement
In G5, the events of G4 will be remembered through a Future Imperfect lens.

Promotional material has established that G5 is set in G4's future, where the latter's events have become legends of the distant past. A lack of well-preserved records (G4 ponies at the minimum have an extremely poor track record for preserving their own history) will have led to a lot of historical details becoming blurred, mis-remembered or forgotten altogether, and a lot of G4 history will be remembered in Broad Strokes when it isn't just Entertainingly Wrong. If G4 characters will make in-person appearances, this may lead to humorous reactions from them if G5 characters ask about details of events that either did not happen or did happen but not in any way like the younger characters think they did.

—06/27/2021

By G5's time, ponies no longer remember that alicorns exist.

This is both a segue on the Future Imperfect guess and based on the idea that, if the three tribes are separated from and distrust each other, the idea of special ponies who embodied the traits of all three kinds likely fell out of cultural favor. Instead, historical alicorns like Twilight are depicted as belonging to the same tribe as that of the one telling the tale — earth ponies say they were earth ponies, unicorns say they were unicorns, and pegasi say they were pegasi, completely ignoring or forgetting key details about the individual ponies like Twilight's nerdy love of magic.

—06/27/2021

  • Semi-Jossed. On one hand Twilight's figure and appearance in the opening has her an alicorn, with those dismissing the Mane Six as fairy tales not dismissing that aspect. On the other hand, they never refer to Twilight or the transformed Sunny as such or seem to realized why it is significant. Too soon to say if it was forgotten or just not mentioned.
  • This is fully jossed in Make Your Mark since Sunny is called an alicorn by name whenever she exhibits her powers.

G5 ponies will have lost all magical abilities, but will regain them once magic returns to the world.

G5 promotional material mentions that magic has been lost from Equestria, and some hints that pegasi can no longer fly. Since most of the ponies' special abilities depend on magic to function, they were thus largely lost over history — pegasus flight, unicorn spellcasting and earth pony strength are all long gone. For all intents and purposes, the three pony kinds are entirely alike except for the presence or absence of a pointy growth or of an extra pair of useless limbs.

However, at some point, magic will return and will bring back things like flight, spellcasting and great strength with it, greatly surprising the ponies who find themselves with abilities that they thought only existed in legend.

—06/27/2021

  • Confirmed on all counts.

G5 ponies no longer get cutie marks; the main characters will be the first ones to have them again.

It is notable that all screenshots released as promotional material show the G5 characters with blank flanks. Thus, as a consequence of magic being gone, ponies also no longer develop cutie marks. Once the main characters achieve whatever it is that the first movie's plot will need them to achieve, they'll get their own cutie marks and become the first ponies in however long to do so.

The reason why other promotional materials show the characters with cutie marks is because promos always, always spoil the big twists.

—06/27/2021
  • That actually may happen in the movie since in G4, cutie marks were connected to magic, and when a pony loses their magic, the cutie mark disappears as well. Though there was a bunch of figurines released where the characters have cutie marks.
—08/11/2021

  • Jossed.

Star Butterfly was the one who destroyed all of Equestria's magic along with Mewni's.

Equestrian magic proved extremely dangerous: Discord's chaos magic made life hell for ponykind in The Dark Times, King Sombra enslaved the Crystal Empire with dark magic, magic had to be disabled to prevent cheating in the Equestria Games, Lord Tirek, Cozy Glow, and the Storm King wanted to steal magic, Anti-Magic would render those completely dependent on magic completely defenseless, Starlight Glimmer stole cutie marks and their associated talents and destroyed Equestria multiple times, and the Element of Magic brought magic to a magic-less human world that was not very used to it. Not to mention that innate Equestrian magic would not be what saves the day more often than not, and repeatedly gets taken away. So Star destroyed the magic to ensure it would never be used for evil again.

—06/29/2021
  • Star's magic is gone too, so how the heck is she supposed to travel to other worlds at all?

  • Jossed: Star comes from a Disney property, which could not be possible with a franchise that was made outside of the company. Instead, the magic was kept into three crystals by Twilight so that Opaline doesn't find them.

Dragons, Changelings, Kirin, Yaks, Hippogriffs, and whatever's missing went extinct due to war and/or genocide.
Hey, considering the movie's premise and how it only mentions the main three pony species, does it really sound far off?
—6/30/2021
  • Given the original series' unwillingness to acknowledge death, never allowing even its worst villains to successfully kill anyone, and that this series is going for the same content and age range, it seems unlikely.
  • G5, despite what it seems, is likely going to be Darker and Edgier than Friendship is Magic so death may be a topic brought up somewhere in the film, but it wouldn't get that graphic.
—8/7/2021

Friendship is Magic is fictionalized within this series.
The events of Friendship is Magic are actually in-universe fiction, in-universe Very Loosely Based on a True Story, or the actual details were lost to the ages. This is how it can be set in the same universe as Friendship is Magic and Pony Life as stated despite the two being alternate continuities.
—06/30/2021

Equestria fell apart because it grew too dependent on the Mane Six.
There is no evidence of Equestria falling apart before the events of FiM (before the Mane Six were born). On top of that, The Cutie Re-Mark foreshadowed the collapse of Equestria multiple times by showing various Bad Futures where the Mane Six were never the Elements of Harmony and Equestria was easily conquered and/or destroyed as a result.
—07/01/2021

The film will begin with the backstories of the mane six
Told by a narrator as a flashback and it will turn out to be Sunny Starscout's dad reading it to her from the Friendship Journal as a bedtime story. After that she tells him she wants to unite the pony tribes teaching about friendship just like how the mane six did she idolizes. He replies her he supports her then a time jump happens to see her older.
—07/01/2021

  • Basically confirmed.

One of the main cast members will fall on the LGBT spectrum
LGBT characters have become very prominent in cartoons as of late, so Hasbro would most likely want to hop aboard. Tons of fans already think Zipp might be one since her hairdo and athletic nature fits the "butch lesbian" trope.
—07/01/2021

In an ironic twist, the other non-pony species have remained together in direct contrast to the ponies
Not only will it help to make the show less likely to rehash plot points of the previous one, it could lead to interesting dynamics now that the roles of divided, hateful species' populations would now be swapped.
—07/02/2021

The reason why the Windigos haven't wiped out this segregated Equestria is because...
...they've been sealed away.
—07/02/2021
...they've been destroyed.
—07/02/2021
...they're powerless without magic, but will return if it comes back.
—07/02/2021
...something and/or someone is keeping them at bay.
—07/02/2021
...now that the pony races are living apart, there's not enough active feelings of hate to sustain them since ponies of different races aren't encountering each other regularly.
—07/07/2021

It is already confirmed Sunny Starscout will be the protagonist but...
Pipp Petals and and Izzy Moonbow will be the deuteragonist and tritagonist while the others shown in the teasers will be supporting characters.
—07/04/2021
  • Perhaps this will be more of a Mane 6 situation where Sunny, Izzy, Pipp, Zipp, and Hitch each have a role as a main protagonist, but Sunny is the leader of the group and the most central protagonist.
  • For the movie itself, ultimately mostly Jossed. Izzy is the deuteragonist while Hitch is pretty much the tritagonist.

G5 Spike?
Being The Constant in almost every generation of the My Little Pony franchise, it only feels natural for Generation 5 to also have a dragon character named Spike... If not for the fact that Generation 5 takes place in the same universe as Generation 4, the latter of which already has such a character. With that being said, a few possibilities exist on who this generation's Spike would be...
  • The same Spike from the previous generation, only Older and Wiser.
  • A descendant of Generation 4's Spike.
  • A completely different dragon who just happens to share the same name as the legendary dragon from ancient times.
  • A character who acts as the equivalent to Spike, looking up to the dragon the same way Sunny looks up to the Mane Six. They would also be the only one of the group who isn't a pony, though they don't necessarily need to be a dragon either.
—07/08/2021
  • There's a chance that Cloudpuff may possibly take up the role as the new "Spike". As the synopsis mentions something about a "flying Pomeranian" and seeing that a figurine of Cloudpuff, who resembles a winged Pomeranian is part of a castle playset that comes with Pipp, they might play some notable role in the film.
—07/30/2021

Queen Haven will be a main antagonist.
Now we know how Hasbro is with this trope, so there's a possibility she may take on the role as a major villain, if not the Big Bad. The expression in her promo render looks pretty smug, giving us a hint that she may be the villain. She might even play a role on how magic disappeared and the separation of the three pony races.
—07/30/2021
There's a chance she may have possession of a very important magical item, possibly the jewel in the synopsis (she does have a jewel in her pendant, after all). And the heist would be that possibly one of her daughters stole it or maybe even another protagonist.
—08/07/2021
...Or maybe she stole that jewel herself (there's a possibility it may have originally belonged to Twilight) and because of it being in the wrong hooves, this caused magic to disappear and she started blaming the other two pony races for its disappearance.
—08/07/2021

  • Jossed. She never antagonizes the heroes at any point.

Come time for the G5 show, the heroes will question whether or not magic is even a good thing.
The "unfair" powers that were common during G4 will be back after the movie, and the heroes will get in-universe flak for bringing them back along with good magic.
—8/1/2021

A major catastrophe happened sometime during the gap from Friendship is Magic to A New Generation.
A recent promo shows the map of Equestria now, but some people have noticed that some place aren't where they used to be. Maretime Bay is where Baltimare should have been, and Bridlewood (where the Unicrons have made home) is only a little south to where Vanhoover was. This would imply something like a massive earthquake had drastically altered the map, and maybe even played a roll of why the three pony species separated.
—08/06/2021
  • Furthermore, there was clearly conflict between all three tribes, considering that the Pegasi have appeared to conquered Canterlot, or seized control of it first.
—08/08/2021
  • Either there was a war between the tribes that soon stalemated, or severe unrest that resulted in the three-way partition of Equestria.
—09/10/2021

There will be a Darkest Hour where Sunny Starscout says she was naive for bringing together the tribes.
But someone else gives her a Heroism Motive Speech.
—08/06/2021
  • Mostly confirmed, although she never renounces her ideals and eventually pulls herself out of her own BSOD.

The Pegasi took over Canterlot.
In the map revealed it appears that Zephyr Heights looks almost exactly like Canterlot, which was inhabited by mostly unicorns. Could it mean somewhere before the events of the movie the Pegasi have conquered Canterlot and made it their own kingdom?
—08/07/2021

Twilight Sparkle will return... as a villain.
Twilight, being an alicorn, will still be alive by the time of G5, but having spent the past centuries watching ponykind grow fractious, divided and distrustful and seeing her teachings and efforts all be forgotten and discarded as soon as she wasn't there to personally enforce them deeply disillusioned her and eventually drove her to believe that her previous, diplomatic methods were ineffective and that the only way for society to be peaceful and harmonious is if she's there to make it such. As such, by the time the new characters encounter her, she'll have become a prospective conqueror seeking to take over Equestria's new societies and make them fit her vision of harmony and utopia by force.
—08/08/2021
  • That could be a good plot twist but highly doubt she would be a villain in G5. There’s a higher chance she may turn out to be alive and outlived all five of her friends or maybe she passed away a few years prior to G5, but it is yet to be known what happened to Twilight as of now.
—08/08/2021
  • Gosh, hopefully not. We have enough of all the sequels/reboots/adaptations treating their source material like trash this way.
—08/10/2021

After magic is restored, technology will stop working.
Since it is known that ponies use actual, modern technology like smartphones ever since magic disappeared, maybe the magic returning to the ponies would cause a disruption in the electrical field and cause all technological items the ponies have to malfunction and cease working. Pipp would be devastated for sure because of how she is with that smartphone of hers.
—08/08/2021
  • Hardly. There is no antagonism between science and magic in any MLP incarnation; in MLP:FIM, Twilight Sparkle stated that magic is essentially another branch of science. It's just after magic switched off, technology started to advance as the only remaining solution.
—09/27/2021

After the three tribes drifted apart, the pegasi took over Canterlot and forced the unicorns out.
In G4, Canterlot is mostly inhabited by unicorns, while Cloudsdale is the primary pegasus city. However, a partial view of a map in promotional material shows that the G5 pegasus city of Zephyr Heights is located where Canterlot used to be. It's thus possible that, as magic faded and they lost their ability to stand on clouds, the pegasi were forced to abandon Cloudsdale and seek a new home. A desire to settle on mountaintops to remain close to the sky drove them towards the tall peak Canterlot was built on, and when conflict broke out between the natives and migrants the pegasi came out on top and were able to force the unicorns out and take control of the city for themselves.

Notably, however, Zephyr Heights is show to be located on the very top of a mountain, while Canterlot was partway up the mountain's slops, so it's possible that pegasi specifically decided to move to the peak after taking control of the area.

—08/08/2021

Pegasi have become the most dominant/influential tribe in Equestria.
In the promotional material, the pegasi are the only ponies shown using advanced digital technology — there's no current evidence of even basic motor engines among the others. Secondly, the partial view of a map in promotional material shows that Zephyr Heights is located where Canterlot, a unicorn-dominated city, is in G4, while the unicorns simply live in the woods. It's probable that the pegasi have become the most dominant of Equestria's three divided nations, having likely ascended to prominence after taking control of central Equestria and displacing the unicorns, allowing them to develop more advanced technology than the other tribes and afterwards using it to maintain their position.
—08/08/2021
  • Maretime Bay has a modern-style movie theater in revealed backgrounds from a book yet to be released so doubt that the Pegasi are the only ones.
—08/10/2021

Sunny Starscout's mom is dead.
We have only seen her dad so far, it is strange there are no images of her mom.
—08/10/2021
  • Phyllis from the VA promo image seems like she could be Sunny's mother as she shares a similar color palette to Sunny, though she seems like she could be the mom who works while Argyle is a stay-at-home father who looks after Sunny. Her work could've prevented her from seeing her husband and daughter as often which would explain why she seems to be out of the picture.
—08/10/2021
—08/11/2021

  • Implicitly Confirmed. She's never seen even during Sunny's childhood.
    • If she were dead then Sunny would've also had a picture or any other special item to remember her by, just like with her father Argyle (which his death is pretty obvious despite not being explicitly said). Alternatively, her parents could've been divorced instead or she was adopted and Argyle was instead her adoptive parent.
—03/08/2023

The Mane 5 are descendants of the Mane 6.
Since it seems like they all share certain qualities of the Mane 6 we all know and love. As if they're reflections of their ancestors.
  • Sunny is most likely a descendant of Twilight since she seems to look up to her a lot, plus her bag has Twilight's cutie mark on it. Or possibly even Applejack as they both share similar color schemes.
  • Izzy would be a descendant of Rarity or Pinkie for sure. She is a unicorn and is both artistic and creative like Rarity and seems to be just as cheerful like Pinkie Pie but also has curly hair just like her.
  • Pipp and Zipp would be descendants of Rainbow Dash for sure. Especially that Zipp looks a like like RD and is just as athletic as her.
  • Hitch would be a descendant of Applejack or Fluttershy because of similar color schemes, again.
—08/10/2021
  • Fluttershy seems possible since Hitch is loved by animals.

My Little Pony Tales takes place sometime between G4 and G5
Just a fun little idea I thought of and not a truly serious theory, but. Basically, since we know G5 has separated pony tribes, no magic, and incorporates a lot of modern real-world technology, MLP Tales taking place in this universe before the events of G5 is hypothetically possible, given that it has an entirely earth pony cast, has no magic, and features plenty of 90s technology.
  • Only problem is that the Pegasi were capable of flight in My Little Pony Tales.
—08/10/2021

The disappearance of magic caused cutie marks to only appear on one side.
In one of the screencaps the official My Little Pony accounts revealed, the ponies seem to only have a cutie mark on one side. It is known that in G4, cutie marks are connected to magic and disappear when the pony’s magic is lost or stolen and that G5 takes place in a future Equestria, so maybe this case of all pony magic disappearing caused the cutie marks of the ponies to only disappear on one flank. Then again this could be Hasbro trying to make the models look almost like the toys (which have a cutie mark on only one side since G4).
—08/11/2021

Discord is still out there and will make an appearance
Albeit not as the Reality Warper Jerk with a Heart of Gold that we all know him as. Since Fluttershy will most likely be long dead, Discord will become more stoic and reclusive without her around.
—08/12/2021

The humans from the Equestria Girls universe were a contributing factor to G5's modernized aesthetic.
This theory suggests that at some time after the events of Friendship is Magic and Equestria Girls, humans have slowly began to flock into Equestria (albeit being turned into ponies upon arrival, as proven in My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Spring Breakdown) to live among ponykind, and in doing so bringing in their culture and technology to the population. Although, this would actually sound problematic if only because there's a fair chance that most of them would end up crossing paths with their Equestrian counterparts.
—08/14/2021
  • Alternatively, it could be the other way around: Equestrians travelling to the human world and then returning home to adapt human culture and technology to their society.
—08/15/2021

Old Equestria collapsed due to an incredibly violent war
While Old Equestria was nice and peaceful, it wasn't at all free of turmoil. Twilight and other ponies are familiar with the concept of war. So it is likely a violent war took place that may have not only killed Twilight, but also led to the destruction of magic.
—08/14/2021

G5 will feature allegories for racial persecution and violence
Based on the trailer, interspecies relations are apparently so awful, the presence of a single unicorn is enough to cause mass panic, and Sunny has to hide Izzy from view in her house. But how bad does the racism get? I bet they are subject to threats or even outright physical assault simply for being in the wrong neighborhood, in a chilling parallel to the Jim Crow era.
—08/14/2021

G5 will see the return of Chrysalis, Tirek and Cozy Glow.
Assuming that they haven't been released from being petrified between the events of Friendship is Magic and A New Generation, Sunny Starscout and her friends will potentially have to contend with Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Glow escaping from their centuries/millennia-long imprisonment and defeat them just as the Guardians of Harmony and their allies did in ancient times. Such a crisis would also serve as a repeat of the events of "The Return of Harmony" from Friendship is Magic, from which the Guardians of Harmony fought against Discord after he escaped from being petrified for a thousand years.
  • One possibility for how this could happen is that Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy will be freed at the end of A New Generation. In a post-credits scene, their petrified forms will be shown with cracks starting to form on them, indicating that while Sunny and her friends were successful in bringing magic back to Equestria, their efforts have also opened the door for evil magic users to return and menace the ponies once again.
—08/15/2021

Sunny and her friends will travel to the Equestria Girls world and find that only a couple of decades have passed
It is implied that there are discrepancies between how time works in Equestria and the human world. By the time G5 begins, only a few decades will have passed in the human world. When the magic vanished from Equestria, it also vanished from the Equestria Girls world too. By this time, Sunset will have become the principal of Canterlot High and would've given up on trying to return to Equestria, only to be pleasantly surprised by seeing ponies coming to her world and bringing the magic with them.
—08/19/2021
  • Alternatively G5's Equestria Girls will follow Sunset's daughter or granddaughter who for one reason or another, doesn't know about her Equestrian heritage only to discover the truth when she starts to develop magic powers of her own, likely coinciding with Equestria regains its magic.
—09/23/2021

Sunny might encounter the ghost of Twilight Sparkle at some point
While Tara Strong has said she wouldn't reprise the role of Twilight Sparkle, that does not rule out a potential guest appearance. If Sunny succeeds in bringing back the magic, Twilight's spirit might approach her and commend the Earth pony for bringing back the values she once promoted.
—08/19/2021

Twilight's letters to Princess Celestia have been published in a book that Sunny frequently consults
If Sunny's devotion to the ideals of Ancient Equestria is strong, it is likely she carries around a lot of memorabilia related to Twilight Sparkle, including a book containing many of the morals Twilight learned over the years. Whenever Sunny has a friendship problem, she'll glance at the book to find a solution.
—08/19/2021

King Sombra was responsible for the destruction of magic
King Sombra, in canon, has been shown to be a very Sore Loser: when he was trapped in ice, he cast a curse that made an entire kingdom vanish for 1,000 years. It is possible that sometime after the end of Friendship Is Magic, he once again came back to life and tried to take over Equestria, perhaps while fighting with Luster Dawn. He loses, but not before he casts an even more powerful spell that destroyed magic for good. And this loss of magic eventually triggered the breakdown of Equestria's inter-tribal unity since ponies needed it to kept their civilization afloat. Sunny might undo the curse and bring magic back...but it might lead to Sombra's resurrection in the process.
—08/19/2021

Luster Dawn was the last alicorn princess
—08/19/2021

G5 won't have a serious antagonist; the main villain will be the prejudice of everypony
While G5 will feature rivals and potentially snobby characters like Queen Haven, there won't be evil villains who plot to conquer all of Equestria. Historically speaking, prejudice itself has been a very powerful force in human history that isn't easily extinguished. Sunny's goal is the unity of other pony races, and her biggest obstacle will be changing hearts and minds, which will never be an easy or smooth process.
—08/19/2021

G5 will have serious villains, but they won't appear in the movie.
Contrary to the above, major villains will appear to threaten Equestria. While Fantastic Racism will be the driving force in the movie, the animated series will feature many a villain that Sunny and her friends will have to face as a result of their having brought the magic back. These villains will not only include returning characters from Friendship is Magic, but also some brand new faces who will attempt to use magic to fulfill their own dark wishes.
—08/19/2021

The rulers of the new pony kingdoms will be the major antagonists of G5
This could be a major contrast between G4 and G5: in the former franchise, Twilight Sparkle not only had the support of royalty, but she became royalty itself, and her main opponents were those threatening to topple Equestria. Sunny, however, is an average Earth pony without any authority figure backing her. Not only that, the rulers of the pony kingdoms might work to actively sabotage her efforts at uniting ponykind, seeing intertribal unity as a threat to their power.
—08/20/2021

The negative effects of social media might also be present
This version of Equestria features modern technology, including cell phones and possibly an Internet-like system. But there might be storylines about the negative effects of social media on people. Political polarization has grown, in part, because of social media and how it can reinforce political bias by giving people a space where you can hear only what you want to hear. A lot of division between ponies could be the result of social-media-driven sensationalism.
—08/20/2021

Sunny will become an alicorn princess
If Sunny succeeds in uniting ponies again and bringing back the magic of friendship, she'll be summoned to the same astral plane Twilight was summoned to. There she'll meet Twilight, along with Equestria's other alicorn princesses. They'll commend her for her bravery, make her an alicorn, and declare her the ruler of all ponykind.
—08/20/2021

  • Confirmed on the alicorn part. Princess is up in the air.

Argyle dies between the flashbacks of Sunny's childhood and the events of the movie.
He seems shockingly absent for an adventure he would love, that being the union of pony races.
—08/28/2021

  • Implicitly Confirmed. While it's never outright stated, Sunny refers to him in the past tense.

Zephyr Heights is named after Zephyr Breeze.
Time has passed so long and historical memory has been so distorted that the pegasi now remember him as a great hero, or Zephyr really did go on to become a great pegasus. There's even a background pony resembling him.
—09/03/2021

Queen Haven will subvert expectations and turn out to be a Reasonable Authority Figure.
Specifically seeking to win popularity by emulating the benevolent rule of the past Alicorn princesses.
—09/10/2021
  • Confirmed. She's ultimately an ally.

The Mane Six are respected national heroes by all three tribes, but their history is distorted.
Perhaps they're respected, but their ideals and cooperation are dismissed as being simply unsuitable for the current political climate, and only a handful of ponies are genuinely interested in them. Or perhaps each species overemphasizes the role of their own tribe within the Mane Six, portraying them in leading roles while the other members merely obeyed or were outright incompetent. The earth ponies would play up Applejack and Pinkie Pie, the unicorns would play up Rarity, and the pegasi would play up Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. As for Twilight herself, she would likely still be acknowledged as the leader of the group, but each tribe would claim that Twilight favored and trusted them the most. Twilight's legacy as leader of a formerly united Equestria could be even in dispute; the pegasi claim they are her true heirs as they now rule the area Canterlot once stood, the unicorns lay claim to Twilight's magical prowess even if they now have none, and the earth ponies lay claim to Twilight's mundane skills as a talented organizer and planner.
—09/10/2021

The situation between the tribes is actually more tense than it appears.
The situation appears to have stabilized as each tribe lives in relative comfort and seem well-off. But the default reaction to seeing another pony species is immediately assuming an attack is imminent. This could suggest that whatever tribal conflict raged is still in the background, and each tribe has plans to mobilize in case conflict breaks out again. If what split the tribes apart culminated in a war, then it's probable that between the defined boundaries of each tribe's territory, 'No Ponies' Land' exists where skirmishes are still fought, and each tribe maintains extensive security measures to ensure no rival tribe ever enters their territory. Sunny and her friends are racing to stop this conflict from restarting someday by restoring unity. Alternatively...
—09/10/2021

The situation between the tribes is actually warming up, and paving the way for the heroes' eventual success.
Years of isolated living and not being in open conflict for the tribes has made them more likely to react in fear than violence in the rare time they even meet a different tribe, at least on an individual level. Furthermore, the protagonists seem to get along and work together remarkably well, and become fast friends. While segregation is definitely still enforced, there is a possibility that hostilities between the three tribes could end quicker than first thought. If there was a war in the past, it was likely costly enough that the tribes stuck to straight-up ignoring each other than continuing conflict.
—09/10/2021

The Mane Six are still alive.
Since Twilight Sparkle is an Alicorn, and thus immortal, and Word of God says she will not outlive her friends.
—09/17/2021

Magic will be restored, but it will come back only slowly.
Enabling powerups at dramatically-convenient times and subplots about Training the Gift of Magic. This way, G5's series will also downplay the Antagonist Abilities that were prevalent during FiM, if not keep them out of the picture altogether.

The magic wasn't destroyed, it was contained in an artifact.
In Generation 4, Cozy Glow had to send the magic to another dimension because it couldn't be destroyed, so whoever caused the missing magic will of trapped it in an artifact that could contain all of it, Grogar's bell.

There will be a Big Bad in the film
Given that all of My Little Pony's shows, movies and games have villains in them, the Netflix film will also have a villain.
—09/24/2021
  • Basically Confirmed. Sprout effectively acts as the main antagonist, although he's more of a blowhard with too much power than a serious threat.

    Post-release
Sunny and co. still have work to do in order to reintegrate the tribes.
It will be a harsh but realistic lesson that millennia-old prejudices can't be overcome with the snap of a finger (so to speak). However, it's still worth the effort.
—09/25/2021

Sunny's wings and horn aren't permanent.
During the return of magic, Sunny's new wings and horn seemed to be made of Hard Light. This implies that the transformation is only temporary, unlike Twilight's.
—09/25/2021
If they aren't permanent now, they might become permanent in the future.
—09/26/2021
Or maybe the wings can appear and disappear at will.
—09/26/2021
They still might become permanent in the future.
—09/27/2021

The unicorns are jellyfish clones from Planet Of The Jellyfish.
Jellyfish clones' weakness is mayonnaise, that is why it is a forbidden word to them.
—09/25/2021

The balloon pony's misfortune will become a running gag.
He'll keep getting out of the picture in various ways, always missing the big revelations as a result. He might also end up becoming the next Derpy Hooves in the process.
—09/25/2021

The series or the pre-series special will introduce a sixth member of the group.
Izzy's tea set has six cups set up, hinting that the group will have a sixth member eventually like the Elements of Harmony before them. Possible Candidates include:
  • A member of a non-pony type of species, like a dragon, griffon, hippogriff, changeling, maybe even a Kirin, to help drive home the theme of racial inclusion.
  • Sprout, after taking a level in kindness.
  • A unicorn, so that Izzy isn't the only unicorn in the group.
—09/25/2021
  • Misty seems to be the most likely candidate here, as both a reluctant evil minion who's really in need of friendship and belonging, and a second unicorn.
    • Basically confirmed as of S4. Misty turns on Opaline, earns her cutie mark, and is accepted by the group.

If they do gain a sixth member, the Mane cast will end up recovering the Elements of Harmony.
  • Sunny will be Magic, as well as the Spark.
  • Izzy will be Laughter
  • Hitch will be Kindness
  • Pipp will be either Loyalty or Generosity
  • Zipp will be either Honesty or Loyalty
  • And the Sixth Ranger will have the Element that Pipp and Zipp don't inherit.

    • Alternatively, Magic will be split into five and fused with the other Elements, and Sunny will have the remaining one, most likely Loyalty, whilst still being the Spark.

This may come with the spirits of the original Guardians of Harmony Passing the Torch to their successors, complete with Twilight giving Sunny a heartfelt thanks for returning the Magic of Friendship to Equestria.

—04/18/2022

During the series, Sunny and her friends will discover part of what destroyed Harmony.
In the span of the thousands of years, Cozy Glow, Queen Chrysalis and Tirek escaped their prisons and exacted their revenge on Twilight by undoing the utopia she created.
  • Failing that, perhaps our new generation will meet them at some point.
    • Or alternatively, it's the real Grogar, who is absolutely disgusted by how Discord imitated him and decided to show Equestria what true evil really is through The War to End All Wars. Needless to say, it was an incredibly Pyrrhic Victory with a good portion of major characters Killed Off for Real by Grogar's forces and the battle ultimately being won by Twilight performing a Heroic Sacrifice to destroy Grogar once and for all in a spell that took all of Equestria's magic to use on him. In the end, with Equestria in shambles, the three pony races blamed each other out of grief for the chaos while all the other races just decided to back out of it.
—09/25/2021

The movie is set up in another part of the world.
The ponies are descendants of colonists from the original Equestria who lost contact with their homeland. This explains why sun and moon no longer seem to require magic — they still do, but they are controlled from the lost homeland. It would also explain why the population is so low.
—09/26/2021

The Fall of Old Equestria wasn't due to one big event and one big villain.
It was the result of several smaller things over a long period of time.
  • Building off that, whatever event destroyed inter-tribal unity is really a long string of terrible happenings — natural disasters, race war, civil war, the collapse of any government and the loss of magic — that the ponies will eventually refer to as 'The Cataclysm' or 'The Disaster' or 'The War.' However, this was followed by a slow recovery period that ran differently for all three tribes, and so Equestria by the movie's time period is bustling but segregated.
—09/26/2021
  • Semi-jossed in "The Traditional Unicorn Sleepover". Twilight sealed away the magic in the Unity Crystals after a unicorn accidentally hurt an earth pony and everypony started fighting each other again. It's still possible that there were other events that led up to this, however.

The success of the movie and the incoming TV series might cause another case of Follow the Leader when it comes to Hasbro reboots.
Friendship is Magic ended up spawning a Littlest Pet Shop reboot only two years after it premiered. Maybe something like that will happen again?
—09/26/2021

Sunny might be made the princess of a new kingdom
Considering she brought back magic and has become an alicorn, Sunny would definitely be worshipped by ponies across Equestria, many of whom would be begging her to become their ruler.
—09/26/2021

Elsewhere in the world, changelings have forgotten that they can shapeshift.
Ocellus explicitly says in "School Raze" that her transformation has a magical component, so it's not a stretch to assume that changelings have lost their magic too by the time of Generation Five. Once it comes back, it doesn't occur to most of them to try shapeshifting straight away because they've forgotten how to do it.
—09/27/2021

If Sprout is to ever be redeemed, it'll be incredibly slow in a deliberate subversion of G4 tropes.
Because he's extremely bigoted even by normal earth pony standards, his first act of 'redemption' will be to progress from trying to wipe out all non-earth ponies to declaring Sunny's non-earth pony friends a credit to their race. Later on, he'll move onto declaring that Some of My Best Friends Are X.
—09/27/2021
  • Semi-jossed. He's shown doing community service in Make Your Mark, but the other ponies seem to be fine with him around. Whether they're only tolerating him at best or if they fully welcomed him back is unclear.

There will be some ponies who still don't trust the other races.
And with magic, they can start indulging in their prejudices in a pretty horrific way.
—09/27/2021
  • Confirmed with Posey, who is reluctant to accept the rapid change in pony society despite Sunny's efforts.

If Sunny's alicorn form is permanent...
The fact that her horn and wings are constantly glowing will become a Running Gag with her being incapable of any kind of stealth, and being a living nightlight for herself and her friends during sleepovers.
—09/27/2021

The Magic in Equestria changed/evolved over the years before it disappeared.
It could explain why Continuity Snarl feels like if it is the case. We came off of the strongest point G4 was with both magic and friendship, we didn't see what happened in between. Like why cutie marks are on one side (could be due to the lessening magic over the years), the day and night cycle being able to operate without Celestia, Luna or even Twilight (maybe they felt like it should operate on its own since it'd be harmless, thinking the Everfree Forest's ways isn't completely strange after all) and why the Treehouse of Harmony lacks the elements of a treehouse when the Mane 5 reached it (likely without the magic of friendship being strong enough, it lost its crystal and treehouse features).
—09/28/2021

There are other pony historians just like Argyle Starshine.
He cannot be the only one.
—09/28/2021

The new Mane 5 are reincarnations of the Mane 6.
At their core the new Mane 5 have a lot in common with the Mane 6 of G4 despite superficially being completely separate entities. Here is a list of potential candidates for each and why:

  • Hitch Trailblazer
    • Fluttershy — Animals inexplicably love him, also they are both nice ponies.
  • Izzy Moonbow
    • Pinkie Pie — this one feels obvious.
  • Pipp Petals
    • Rarity — Loves the spotlight and can be a drama queen but is ultimately a good pony.
    • Rainbow Dash — Big ego.
  • Zipp Storm
    • Applejack — She's honest and feels uncomfortable about lying. She also loves her family and tries to do right by everyone.
    • Rainbow Dash- A very athletic Daredevil is loyal to a fault and fan of the wonderbolts.
  • Sunny Starscout
    • Twilight — Loves learning, natural born leader, main character.
    • Rainbow Dash — Athletic and can get competitive.

Not a perfect theory since one is still missing.

  • Sprout is as bullheaded as Rainbow and AJ were in the beginning with Rarity's flair for the dramatic.
—09/28/2021

Theories on just where in Equestria the movie took place
  • Around Canterlot
  • Around Las Pegasus
—09/29/2021

The magic was lost BEFORE the fighting began, not as a result of it
This feels like a safe bet. If the magic was lost before the fighting began, this would explain why the different races turned on each other and retreated back to the old divided ways. Not wanting to admit they'd lost their magic, though, everyone turned against each other. Primarily, the unicorns and the pegasi turned against one another, deeming Earth Ponies too stupid to steal magic. Likely with the other two, they simply believed the other wanted to be the only possessors of magic, to make themselves more formidable. The problem though is this doesn't explain why the magic was lost- only why there's a divide. As to windigos, they don't actually appear in the bad timelines Starlight Glimmer makes. So it's possible they can only feed on small fights in a group, and not a nationwide issue.
—09/29/2021

It wasn't just the ponies who lost magic
The entire world did — this is why the sun and moon change on their own, why weather acts on its own, why the crystals in Bridlewood don't glow until the end of the movie, and more. With no magic in the world at all, things fell to nature. It's noted in Gen 4 that the Everfree Forest has these elements on its own, so it's not impossible that things act on their own.
—09/29/2021

The loss of magic was a last-ditch attempt to stop Windigos
Let's assume that at some moment past G4, pony races came into serious conflict, that could not be stopped in time. Windigoes appeared and started to freeze the world. As a last-ditch effort, someone — Twilight Sparkle most likely — implemented a radical solution, and switched the magic off completely. Of course, such state was not supposed to be permanent. Therefore crystals were left as backup switch that would activate ONLY when pony races learn to get along again, and magic could be safely switched back on without the risk of bringing Windigos back. Of course, nobody actually expected that it would took so long...
—09/30/2021

This movie is a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit
The Cloverleaf company that wanted to demolish Toon Town was run by ponies from previous MLP generations. Namely Phyllis' ancestors. Some point after the movie they demolished Toon Town then eventually wiped out non-pony toons then even humans. Then at some point the Cloverleaf company got renamed to Canterlogic.

Sunny will face discrimination for being an Alicorn
Assuming her new wings and horn are permeant at least. It's unlikely everyone is going to give up their bigotry immediately and at least some ponies may find that fact she's basically an Earth Pony, Unicorn and Pegasus all at once uncomfortable, especially since she wouldn't fit into normal categories.
—09/30/2021

Despite lots of history being forgotten, Sunny's Alicorn nature, assuming it's permanent, will lead to her becoming a Reluctant Ruler.
In this theory, Sunny finds herself atop a throne due to Haven, Phyllis and Alphabittle all agreeing that as a pony with traits from all three races would be the ideal leader for a reunited Equestria; of course, they don't just throw her to the wolves and instead act as her advisers and will lead their individual towns when Sunny can't be there but their intention is for Sunny, with her friends beside her, to one day be crowned as ruler of the fully restored Equestria.
  • This would likely lead to bonding with Zip, who is equally reluctant to take up the crown she will inherit (being the Crown Princess of the Pegasi) and could very well be forced to take up as her people don't want to discard their monarchy but don't want Haven back on the throne, with them seeing Zip as more fit to rule since A) she only kept the secret because her mother ordered her to do so and B) she helped bring the magic back.

The Hippogriffs as a whole now live in a World in the Sky (of sorts)
Unlike the Pegasi, the Hippogriffs can fly on their own power. The magic they lost was instead the ability to be shift to their sea dwelling forms. As such, they built a "sky city" on a mountain peak so high that it'd be impossible for any creature that cannot fly to reach it. Any who were left in their sea dwelling forms were out of luck and left to fend for themselves in the sea, where they eventually integrated into underwater societies. Their descendants don't even know that they are hippogriffs.
—10/01/2021

Klugetown still exists, but has changed
Instead of being the place ruled by Beast Men of all sorts, it is now populated entirely by a race of crossbreeds called "Klugebreeds" who chase out any newcomer or traveler who isn't able to pass as one of them.
—10/01/2021

Queen Haven wasn't the one who started the lie of the royal family being able to fly.
It was started by one of her ancestors, maybe her grandmother, in an attempt to prove she deserved the throne more than anyone else in the family. After that, the lie has been passed down so that the royal family can stay in power, and to avoid be arrested after lying to the public for so long.
—10/03/2021

Queen Haven and Alphabittle will become a couple.
And later get married.
—10/06/2021

  • And Alphabittle will have plenty of shenanigans Winning Over the Kids. Of the two Princesses, Zipp seems the most likely to be grossed out over Haven dating again, while Pipp seems likely to at worst see-saws between "ew, old people love," and "aww, old people love!"
—02/06/2022

  • Confirmed as of S4 that they're at least in a relationship. Both princesses find it gross.

Luster Dawn is related to Sunny.
This probably isn't true but it's an idea. She may have died before Sunny was born and was possibly Argyle's wife or mother, explaining why he was one of the few non prejudiced ponies.
—10/08/2021

  • Or Sunny is more distantly related to Luster but due to Luster's role as Twilight's student, she instilled her teacher's openminded teachings into her children with such vigor that it became a family tradition even as the pony races drifted apart and fell into hate and fear.
—12/10/2021

Something happened that fundamentally changed how magic in the setting worked (tied it to the unity between the pony tribes, allowed the sun and moon to operate on their own). Something of that magnitude would be sufficient to explain the social upheaval that caused G4 civilization to collapse and be forgotten, if not directly erasing/altering as much as it did.
—10/09/2021

The setting was subject to Laser-Guided Amnesia.
The Memory Stone from Forgotten Friendship was shown in Argyle's notes throughout, it must mean something. And with how completely everypony has forgotten about the Mane Six...
—10/09/2021

Argyle's death will be story significant.
Given how averse the series is to acknowledging death, it wouldn't have implied it as heavily as it could get away with unless it was meant to be important. In the movie it didn't clearly change Sunny's character in a way that years of failing to overcome prejudice and being shunned by society wouldn't have. Maybe he had knowledge others didn't want leaking or had something they wanted for themselves. Or maybe it's going to be a parallel the deaths of the G4 characters which led to the current setting.
—10/10/2021

Zipp and Pipp are Irish Twins.
Zipp is the older of the two, but in another piece of media, the two were described as twins. There doesn't seem to be a significant maturity gap between them or between Pipp and the others, so Irish twins would make sense since one would be still older, but the age gap would be a maximum of 12 months.
—10/10/2021
  • Zipp could be minutes or hours older than Pipp.
—03/09/2023

There will be a humorous episode (or episode subplot) explaining why "mayonnaise" is a forbidden word for unicorns.
It will be flashback episode of an elder unicorn. The events revolve around somepony talking about mayonnaise, and completely unrelated yet well timed chaos happens at the next second. Then unicorns just go, "gosh that's just as bad than the other forbidden words" and add "mayonnaise" to the list just to be sure. Could be a lesson on how superstitions and urban legends are born.
—10/12/2021

Before magic was restored, combination beasts (such as chimaeras) existed as their components (lion, goat and snake).
In My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic episode School Raze — Part 2, the Mane Six use magic borrowed from magical creatures to escape Tartarus. This temporarily causes the said creatures to split into their "component" animals (chimaera turns into a lion, a goat and a snake, and Cerberus turns into three dogs). Wouldn't be surprised if that happened again when Equestria lost its magic and ponies split up.
—10/12/2021

  • To expand on this, it's quite possible that the return of magic to Equestria will also cause the reemergence of magical creatures. While it's unlikely that random animals will just fuse with each other, since by the time of the movie it's most probable that no living animals will actually have been part of chimeric animals, it's possible that magical or unusual traits will begin to show up in their descendants — say, lions growing scorpion tails.

Similarly, it's possible that magical but non-chimeric creatures and plants simply lost their powers or attributes — such as poison joke becoming regular flowers, or cragadiles losing their stony scales — which will also begin to return now that magic's back.
—01/06/2022

The Mane Five have already been to the place where the Mane Six were buried.
Where else would the Guardians of Harmony be laid to rest?
  • The mane characters will learn this in the series.
  • If that isn't the place then the Mane Five will find the spot where the Heroes of Equestria rest in peace.
—10/13/2021
  • If it is their final resting place that would make the daisy field morbidly appropriate.
—10/14/2021

The reason Sunny's wings and horn look so different from what we've previously seen on Alicorns is because she's the first Alicorn of a new age with new magic.
All the previous Alicorns had wings and horns that matched their coat colors because the first Alicorn of that age, whoever it was, had that kind of appearance and due to magic being tied heavily to Alicorns, that set the standard for how an Alicorn is meant to look. With the magic having essentially been reset, Sunny became the standard for how a modern Alicorn would look and for whatever reason, that meant wings and horns that glow and are made of Hard Light; this could remain their permanent appearance or it could just be her being a new Alicorn and they will become more like normal Pegasus wings and Unicorn horns as time moves on but still be a case of Power Glows.
—10/14/2021

This movie takes place in an Alternate Timeline.
—10/24/2021

Hippogriffs and seaponies have become different species.
In Friendship is Magic, hippogriffs and seaponies were the same species who simply changed forms using fragments of the Pearl of Transformation. However, due to the magic going away the pearl fragments have lost their power, rendering a hippogriff unable to assume their seapony form and a seapony unable to assume their hippogriff form. Fast forward to the time A New Generation takes place and the hippogriffs and seaponies have become separate creatures entirely.
—10/27/2021

Sunny was adopted
It would explain why she looks nothing like Argyle, and why we never see any reference to her mom: he was single.
—11/03/2021
  • Don't really feel like that means they aren't biologically related. Generation 4 had plenty of characters that were related but didn't look much alike. (Would you guess Shining Armor and Twilight were siblings if the show never told you?)
—11/14/2021

Sunny's Alicorn form is temporarily temporary.
With this theory, eventually Sunny will transform into an Alicorn permanently due to some kind of event like the ones that ascended Cadence and Twilight but because magic has been reset, being caught at the center of the restoration, Sunny received an Alicorn form that she can assume temporarily as needed so as to better help her restore harmony in Equestria to solidify the magic.
—11/05/2021

Zephyrina "Zipp" Storm is Transgender

Her voice and appearance seem to be quite masculine, but everyone uses "her" to refer to the character. There is a possibility that he is actually a trans guy note, and that this is something relatively accepted.

—11/11/2021
  • There is so much wrong with this. Given that this WMG defines trans guy to mean a boy who feels like a girl, it is reasonable to assume it means someone who was assigned male at birth but who identifies as female (in actuality, that refers as a trans girl). Ergo, this is misgendering. But even still, trans women aren't inherently more masculine than cis women. The masculine cis women population is much higher than the total population of trans women.
—12/07/2021
  • While there is the possibility that Zipp is a potential trans guy, note no evidence has shown her to be anything but a bit of a tomboy.
—09/19/2023

Flurry Heart will be the first G4 Alicorn that will appear.
If Equestria did undergo a cataclysmic war, it's likely that Flurry Heart was sent away as the final hope for Twilight's teachings. Flurry Heart will appear to aid in the rebuilding of Equestria. In addition, she'll use her Alicorn powers to protect ponies from new enemies that'll use the newly restored magic for evil gains.
—11/30/2021
  • Jossed, since it was Twilight who showed up in "Growing Pains", albeit as a hologram.

The state of Equestria was the long-term result of Chrysalis', Tirek's, and Cozy Glow's plan to take over Equestria.
Remember, their plan to weaken Equestria started with turning the three tribes against each other so the Mane Six would be more alone against them. They sabotaged crops and spread rumours among the populace so they'd think the other pony tribes were up to no good. While they did get over it in the end, and just in time to help the Mane Six defeat Tirek, Cozy Glow, and Chrysalis, the truth of what they did never really got out. Thus, it's possible that mention of that event in the history books started to make the three tribes suspicious of each other, and over time, it grew and grew into the bigotry and fear that broke the three tribes apart.
—01/13/2022

Izzy Moonbow is Discord and Fluttershy's multi-great granddaughter.
She is cute as a button, and you will notice wherever she goes she sows chaos and panic, especially in Zephyr Heights where she indirectly brings a stable and secure monarchy to it's knees, and all without a single spark of magic at all. Great-Grampa must be so proud. The comparatively smaller amount of Fluttershy influences (animals, shyness, etc) could just be Pinkie Pie's lineage sneaking in somewhere down the line.
—02/06/2022

The actual charge against Queen Haven was fraud.
"Phony pony full of baloney" is just established network jargon that the anchorponies are under contract to use in high-profile fraud cases. Dazzle's straight-faced delivery of the line is the result of considerable practice.

The Post-Equestrian States' Forms of Government
  • The Pegasi: Absolute Direct Monarchy
    • We don't see or hear of any legislative body elected by the people, so a Constitutional Monarchy is unlikely. Nor any word of nobility of any sort, so Feudalism is out. And having such a potent conspiracy to preserve the illusion that the Royal Family can still fly is best explained under a model of government that the Monarch has absolute control of. Meaning that Queen Haven and her government have a lot in common with Liechtenstein. In fact one wonders if it's also a tax haven as well, given the clear wealth of the kingdom. And given how their nation is implied to be mostly Zephyr Heights and the surrounding areas, that's about the right size for such a monarchy to not also be either abysmally inefficient or oppressive to a totalitarian degree.

  • The Earth Ponies: Confederation of City States
    • This requires a bit more conjecture, but a lot can be inferred from a little evidence. There is a Sheriff, so that means that they have some form of government in place, so Anarchy is out. But there's no sight of the sorts of industries that could support things like CanterLogic (all those materials need to come from somewhere) or a movie industry that produces blockbuster-style films like Judgment Neigh. This implies that there are other earth pony settlements that would have, for example, a petrochemical or other heavy industrial company or mass media studio that fills the niche of CanterLogic in Maretime Bay, and strong economic ties for easy enough trade to not require each city or town to have a little of everything and be unable to specialize. But there would need to be a loose enough federal level government to allow a temporary sheriff like Sprout to declare himself the title of Emperor or Commander-in-Chief without outside interference. Taken together, the Earth Ponies seem to have developed a Confederation of City States not unlike Switzerland, which despite outward appearances is only a loosely associated collection of cantons, and no official capital — outsiders just label Bern as the capital due to it being where the legislature sits.
      • If Sprout could legitimately claim the title of "Emperor of Maretime Bay," the other earth pony city states are likely a massive fustercluck of titles and government forms.

  • The Unicorns: An Autonomous Collective
    • Unlike in every other settlement, there is not a breath of anything resembling a centralized or higher government, and the Unicorn Crystal wasn't found in the hooves of a ruler, but some schmuck that won it off some other schmuck that liked shiny stuff in a Rubik's cube game. Furthermore, there's no sign of the sort of public works like infrastructure being maintained outside of what the individual ponies could provide on their own. Therefore, based on what little evidence a single 90-minute film can give us, it is not to unreasonable to assign the Unicorn nation to be a collective of Anarcho-Syndicalist Communes. You see, governorship would be derived from a mandate from the masses, and not some farcical acrobatic ceremony as in Zephyr Heights. So presumably every pony that wishes to take up the duty is a sort of "Executive Officer of the Week."
      • Yes...
      • But every decision of that officer must be approved by a public refferendum at a special bi-weekly meeting, with decisions being decided by a simple majority for purely internal affairs-
      • Yes I see!
      • But he or she must have a two-thirds majority approval for matters of foreign concern and-
      • SHUT UP! WILL YOU SHUT! UP!
      • We apologize for this pedantry. Those responsible have been sacked.

Friendship is Magic was Broad Strokes
The cartoon that we saw was the Broad Strokes version of the true history that either Argyle came up with for his daughter, or she came up with based on what he taught her. That explains the more overt moralizing, the inconsistent characterization, the Schizo Tech, and the fact that it looks like the toys he made her instead of the G5 designs. Argyle just interpreted the past in a way that her young mind would better understand, to get the moral across.
—03/03/2022

"Ancient" Equestria was a Lie
The abandoned aerodrome underneath Zephyr Heights has a layer of dust on it, but it's too well-preserved to be ancient. The pegasus ponies would need to perform constant upkeep and restoration to keep it looking that nice. It also has signs showing the lighthouse in Maretime Bay and the Wonderbolts lifted from G4, indicating they're not as chronologically-divorced as Argyle implied. When he was coming up with stories for his daughter (see the "Broad Strokes" entry above) he likely recast it as "ancient" for poetic effect when actually it was only a few decades or a century or two prior.
—03/03/2022

Izzy is a Descendant of Rarity/Sweetie Belle
Points in favor:
  • Lives near Ponyville/Tree of Harmony
  • Unicorn
  • Creative like Rarity
  • Flamboyant like Sweetie Belle
  • "Izzy" is short for Isabelle, half of Sweetie Belle's name. Potentially her ancestor married a descendant of Sugar Belle, meaning she's also part Apple (then again, who isn't?). The name is traditional family name.
—03/03/2022

The Post-Film Series will Redo "Dragonshy"
Sunny & co. will need to set out to deal with a scary dragon near Maretime Bay. When they find him, he will try and scare them off, but when he sees Twilight's sigil at the climax he will abruptly stop. The episode will either suggest or outright confirm it's Spike, who is morose about seeing everything fall apart and wants nothing to do with ponies anymore. He'll either fly off into the sunset only to return later during a pivotal moment, or he'll act bitter and angry and make veiled comments blaming ponies for everything falling apart only to soften at the last moment. He will become a crotchety, gruff mentor and expositor to Sunny & co.
—03/03/2022

Sunny's Series Goal will be the (peaceful) re-unification of Equestria to its former glory
While Twilight and her friends dealt with mainly friendship problems, Sunny has a lot more on her plate: not merely solving disputes with ponies, but bringing ponies back together under one banner, one nation, and one state.

While the end of the movie is optimistic, the series that arrives will show how Sunny's actions won't have eliminated prejudice and hate overnight. Some hateful bigots will still want to keep ponies separated, and with their magic back, they may oppose Sunny's goal with more than just words.

—03/03/2022
  • Confirmed in the Make Your Mark Special, where Posey refuses to accept that the races can peacefully reunite.

All the G4 villains will return.
The G4 villains will just appear as images in the background of windows showing the events of G4.

Gen 5 is basically the Third Age of ponykind
Jokes about the title aside, it makes sense. The time of Star Swirl the Beared would be the first age. Twilight's era, which considered Star Swirl's era ancient, the second age. Thus Sunny's era, which considered Twilight's era ancient, is the third age for Equestria. This would be similar to things like the Bronze and Iron Ages in our world's history.

G5 takes place in an Alternate Continuity.
—04/27/2022

Sunny and Sprout are siblings Separated at Birth when Phylis and Argyle split up over their different opinions on the three pony tribes.
Sunny has a Missing Mom, Sprout has a Disappeared Dad and Phylis was pretty much acting like a bitter ex-wife towards Argyle in the movie's prologue.

Twilight sealed away the magic in order to prevent the fighting from escalating any further.
Being an Alicorn with an extended lifespan, Twilight outlived all of her friends and loved ones. With no one to wield the remaining Elements, tensions began to rise between the pony races until it exploded into an all-out war (possibly also resulting in the eradication of the non-pony races). Twilight tried to diffuse the fighting and convince them that friendship could still prevail, but all her efforts were futile, and in a last-ditch attempt to stop them from killing each other off completely (and as punishment, believing them to be unworthy of this magic for using it to harm each other), she sealed away their magic in the crystals and scattered them where nopony could find them, while she herself went into hiding; jaded, disillusioned, and never to be seen again. The ponies blamed each other for the loss of the magic, and this hatred and distrust carried over into the following generations until they just hated each other without remembering what caused the fighting in the first place.
—05/25/2022
  • Confirmed in "The Traditional Unicorn Sleepover". Twilight sealed away the magic in the Unity Crystals after a unicorn accidentally hurt an earth pony and everypony started fighting each other again.

Twilight is still out there, and Sunny and the gang will meet her, but they’ll learn that Sunny’s idol is a Broken Pedestal and must re-convince her of the magic of friendship.
Continued from previous WMG. Twilight is still alive, just hundreds (perhaps thousands) of years old by now. She went into hiding following the end of the magic, and she re-emerges when the magic returns. Sunny is initially ecstatic to meet the hero of her father’s stories and thinks Twilight is here to congratulate her on restoring the magic, but her fantasies are quickly dashed when Twilight turns out to be a cynical, bitter shell of her former self who no longer believes in the magic of friendship after seeing how the pony races nearly tore each other apart centuries (or even millennia) ago and has a bone to pick with Sunny for releasing it after she went through all that trouble to seal it away. Though somewhat disillusioned, Sunny refuses to give up, and with the help of her friends she sets out to find a way to prove Twilight wrong and convince her that friendship can still triumph.

The My Little Pony Tales characters are ancestors of the current ones.
Namely, Bright Eyes of Hitch, and Melody of Pipp and Zipp.
—05/25/2022

The origins of the evil alicorn who appears at the end of Make Your Mark
At the end of Make Your Mark, a malicious-looking alicorn appears. The only thing we know about her is that she waited for Sunny and her friends to stabilize the magic, and wants to take back what is hers. There are a lot of potential origin stories for this mare.

1. Like Sunny, she was a pony who wanted to bring back the magic. Unlike Sunny, she was only interested in getting magic for her own selfish desires. Since magic in Equestria is fueled by friendship, she couldn't get it back since she doesn't understand friendship or sharing.

2. She is a former royal of a unicorn kingdom who was deposed, and wants to use magic to regain her kingdom.

3. She was the reason why magic vanished from Equestria in the first place: she was the last villain Twilight faced, and was too strong for Twilight to beat. In a last desperate act, Twilight had to destroy magic to seal her away. Bringing magic back inadvertently revived her and now she wants to unite Equestria under her iron hoof.

—05/27/2022

The Alicorn Villain in the special is Midnight Sparkle, Twilight's villain form, similar to how Luna's villain form is Nightmare Moon and Celestia's villain form being Daybreaker.
—05/28/2022
  • And the unicorn standing in that scene is the daughter of Midnight Sparkle.
—06/01/2022
  • Jossed by the IDW Comics since she is revealed to be Opaline.
—06/26/2022

The unicorn standing by the Shadowy Alicorn will be redeemed in the main series.
After meeting the Mane Five and learning about how strong their friendship is, the character undergo a Heel–Face Turn and become a Sixth Ranger to the group, neatly filling the quota for an extra unicorn.
—05/31/2022
  • Confirmed as of S4, with Misty's heel-face turn.

Alternatively, the Shadowy Alicorn is one of Twilight's students either directly or through another of Twilight's students.
Obviously this student became a traitor at some point if this theory is correct.
—06/01/2022

Scootaloo is Sunny's ancestor.
They have almost identical color schemes, and Sunny shows herself to be athletic with her roller-skating.
—06/07/2022

The series will go through a Cerebus Syndrome.
—06/12/2022

Grogar will show up in future episodes/specials.
The old ram will step in for bring misery in the ponies' lives once again, revenge-thirsty for his defeat in the past and mad for the Discord's antic as him in g4. Sunny and her friends will face him in a ferocious fight in wich they are severely injured and Meretime Bay is leveled. Discord will save the day by standing in for them as a aton for stealing the crystals in the comics, fighting with his old father Grogar, who will reveal his connections with the Draconicus's creation and attack to Equestria in the past. Sunny will eventually unlock her alicorn potential in a desperate moment, defeating Grogar and his monsters and ending The Father Of Monster's Threat for good.
—06/29/2022

If Twilight and/or the Mane 6 are still alive somehow or will show up as spirits.
Discord or more likely Sunny will call them out for being reckless and assembling the magic inside the crystals without thinking at the consequences in a very cathartic moment for who didn't like their choice between the public.
—06/29/2022
  • Semi-confirmed. Twilight shows up in "Growing Pains" as a prerecorded hologram to warn the Mane Five of a mysterious villain who's plotting to steal all of Equestria's magic.

Alternatively, others past generations villains will be re-made for this series, as a Call-Back to the others series and a blink to the nostalgics.
C'mon, who doesn't want some epic charicters like Lavan or Erebus to show their faces in the new cartoon.
  • Or Typhoon, the original dragon king, that will be related to Sparky the new dragon from Make Your Mark.
—06/29/2022

The Shadowy Alicorn is Luster Dawn.
—06/30/2022
The Last Episode, New Character theory of yours is interesting considering Luster Dawn hasn't gotten much development in the last episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
—07/07/2022

The Shadowy Alicorn is a new character.
Considering that the alicorn has not been mentioned in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, this may be possible.
—07/07/2022
  • Confirmed.

The Shadowy Alicorn is Radiant Hope from the IDW comics.
Not only does she look like Radiant Hope, it coincide with the rumors of King Sombra appearing in G5.
—07/18/2022

The Shadowy Alicorn's name is Sombra.
Her ancestor is King Sombra, both are powerful unicorns with curved horns.
—07/28/2022

The reason the magic disappeared is because it flowed into the human world.
In EQUESTRIA GIRLS, Equestrian magic is shown to be flowing into the human world, specifically through the crack in the broken statue base where the portal is. It's also repeatedly shown to be a place where magic often ends up when it leaves Equestria, like the numerous magical artifacts or the chunk of the Storm King's magic that leaked in without anyone knowing. And while the leak in the statue was small at the time, to have it remain open for several centuries, potentially growing bigger with time? This would make the crystals an emergency reserve, a spare supply of magic in order to keep some magic in Equestria, potentially even storing the magic until the tear in dimensions could be fixed to prevent any other issues from popping up.
—08/14/2022

Opaline is Chrysalis in disguise.

The end of the G4 comics is a cliffhanger where the statue containing the trio of Chrysalis, Tirek and Cozy Glow starting to crack. This implies that at least one of them escaped at some point and it was Chrysalis that did so. Just looking at Opaline, you can see many similarities between her and Chrysalis, from the taller and lankier form and the fact she has a sharp horn and wings to her long greenish mane and green eyeshadow. And while it was said a UNICORN like her started the conflict, it would’ve taken assumed wrongdoing from all three tribes for the separation to happen, and she could cover those bases easily.

—08/15/2022

Both Opaline and Chrysalis have the same build and she keeps her blue mane. Plus, Opaline said that ponies should both love and fear their rulers, which is Chrysalis’s philosophy in ruling over others.

—-09/27/2022

The Treacherous Trio will be back
Tirek, Chrysalis and Cozy escaped their confinement somehow and returned to Equestria to revenge, but they realize that nobody of their original enemies is still alive. Then, they will have two choices to do: Give up evil and retire, or, more likely, try to use this fact to their advantage, trying to continue what they failed to do before, but are defeated by Sunny and her friends. They then will either choose to escape and plan to revenge on their new nemesis, or (unprobably) be redeemed like Starlight or Sunset before, but still being jerky despite that.
  • Or, in a subversion, they realize that Opaline is a bigger threat then they are currently, and decides (though begrudgingly) to form a Enemy Mine with the Mane 5.
—08/26/2022

Alternatively, Sombra will come back
He will retry to take over Equestria, but is stopped again. Then, he will undergo the "Discord's path" and become this generation version of Discord, maybe even developing a close friendship with one of the mane 5, like the chaos spirit did with Fluttershy.
  • Izzy is likely the one who will be "Fluttershy 2.0" , being klutzy and socially awkward like the yellow pegasus, leading to some Ship Tease with the umbrum.
    • Maybe even with Hitch since he is Fluttershy's fanon descendant.
—08/26/2022

Dragons in G5 Equestria have evolved from the dragons of G4 Equestria
In G4, Spike was wingless when he hatched from his egg, and his wings only grew in after he molted, which is the dragon equivalent of puberty. In G5, however, Sparky hatched with his wings intact. This could mean that for thousands of years, dragons have evolved that way to ensure that their young would have a higher chance of survival since they can start practicing flying at a younger age.
—09/29/2022

This is further supported in "The Isle of Scaly", where Spike is revealed to be quadrupedal like the other dragons after a thousand years, presumably from evolution.

Queen Opaline is related to Celestia and Luna
Perhaps she is their mother or older sister, and her being a queen is the reason Celestia has always been a princess.
—10/07/2022

  • Jossed as of S4, but she is just as old and they knew each other as fillies.

Misty will bite back as well as stand up to Opaline as well as stand up to her

—10/12/2022
Once Misty gets tired of her abusiveness towards her, since will finally bite back, stand up to her as well as calling her out for abusing her.

  • Semi-confirmed as of S4. Misty turns against Opaline but hasn't yet openly defied her.

Misty will make a Heel–Face Turn

—10/12/2022
Misty, once she finally has the courage, will turn against her adoptive mother, Opaline.

  • Confirmed as of S4.

Misty will officially join Sunny and her Friends

—10/12/2022
When she does pull of a Heel–Face Turn, she’ll be finished with working for Opaline, and will join Sunny, along with her friends after standing up to her.

  • Basically confirmed as of S4.

The tree the Mane Five created in "Growing Pains" will become a new Tree of Harmony
Due to being created by the Mane Five combining their cutie mark magic, the tree will ultimately transform into a all-new Tree of Harmony, with new Elements to boot.
—30/12/2022

Opaline was once one of Twilight’s students.
The reason for her evil intents now is probably out of envy: she turned on Twilight for most likely favoriting another of her students instead of her when she thinks she’s made a lot more progress in her studies about magic. She could also be a reason why Twilight is no longer there, which is also why she was described as a “unicorn” in the comics (though that could instead be because her wings weren’t visible) and why she’s an alicorn now: she probably stole Twilight’s own magic for herself in revenge, thus earning her wings.
—12/31/2022

  • Jossed as of S4; Opaline is an elemental alicorn as old as Celestia and Luna.

Queen Haven is Cozy Glow, or her descendant
Queen Haven has a similar colour scheme to Cozy Glow, and she (or her ancestor) may have chose to rule over the Pegasi under a new name after she broke free from being turned into a statue.
—18/01/2023

There will be an episode focusing on the bad side of social media.
Given how this generation has become so hi-tech with ponies using smartphones and such, eventually there may be an episode where someone such as Pipp would deal with the dark side of what social media has to offer (as social media is not all good after all). Perhaps dealing with haters and cyberbullying, extreme expectations of anything from popularity to image, or even how it can be detrimental to her health and well-being.
—03/08/2023

Misty was created by Opaline.
She did not panic coming up with a last name to hide her real one but because she does not have one. She is clearly not from Brightwood as she is unfamiliar with their traditions, and could not have come from Maretime Bay or Zephyr Heights as those only recently recontacted unicorns. Apparently, she is the only unicorn "born" outside the three towns that make up (what's left of) Equestria and she does not seem to question this. Being made by Opaline, perhaps literally from mists, would explain this.
—03/14/2023

  • ...I highly doubt that. According to Opaline in MYM episode 1, she said that she rescued Misty when she is a filly. Are you really sure Opaline created Misty?
—08/08/2023
  • Ultimately Jossed. Since Misty's father is revealed, so there's no point that Opaline would create Misty.
—02/24/2024

Misty is what's left of Twilight Sparkle.
Related to the above, it would explain why the hologram had the "young" Twilight Sparkle if Opaline was slowly stealing Twilight's power. Twilight recorded the message when she was partly depowered, before setting up the shield that would stop Opaline from going the rest of the way - which Opaline would naturally consider stealing from her. If Twilight was able to protect everypony (who was left, thus the reduced population) except herself, Opaline might have drained the rest of her power (turning her back into a unicorn), then tortured and traumatized her for decades until brainwashing Twilight into thinking she was a filly from outside the three cities with only Opaline for a friend. Her cutie mark is suppressed along with her memories. When she gets them back, it's going to hurt.
—03/14/2023
  • This may be inspired by or a response to fans who wanted pre-alicorn Twilight back in the worst way.
—03/14/2023

Opaline and Misty are what's left of Twilight Sparkle.
Further extending from the above, Opaline is the nightmare form of Twilight Sparkle. Her coming to life started the crisis that depopulated Equestria. She used her connection to Twilight to slowly drain her.
—03/14/2023

Zipp will find out that Misty is working for Opaline
Ever since Izzy told her and their friends about Misty, She has became very suspicious such as intterogating her about her stories, including thinking she was the one who supposedly stole the Lantern.

Despite that however, in "Mission Imponable", she became suspicious on who sneaked in on trying to steal The Unity Crystals as when Sunny found Misty, she was the only one who was happy/or excited that Misty was there. As after Misty left, she became suspicious when she noticed parts of the broken glass, wit her suspicously saying "I'm not so sure".

This could likely have Zipp figure out that Misty is working for Opaline, and was the one who try to steal the Unity Crystals.

—04/11/2023

  • Semi-confirmed in S4. Zipp works out that something is up with Misty, who confesses about lacking a cutie mark instead. Misty is then found out by the whole group in a later episode.

Hitch will be connected to Pony Royalty in some way
In previous generations, all Ponies associated with dragons (Majesty, the UK versions of the Princess Ponies, Wysteria, Twilight Sparkle) are also royalty in some way (or implied to be in Majesty's case). Even Scorpan, Spike's original master in the original Rescue at Midnight Castle Special, was a human prince. This suggests that Hitch, who looks after Sparky the Dragon, will have some association with Pony Royalty, either being descended from a royal pony like one of the Alicorn Princesses or he will marry into the Pegasi Royal Family by marrying either Pipp or Zipp.

—05/14/2023

Twilight gave up her immortality to create the Unity Crystals.
One of the more plausible reasons she's nowhere to be seen in the present.

—06/07/2023

Misty is Alphabittle's long-lost daughter.
In "The Manesquerade Ball", Alphabittle has an odd look on his face when he briefly sees Misty (before a crowd pony blocks his view), almost as if he recognises her. Considering Misty's statement in "Missing the Mark" that she has no idea where she came from before Opaline found her, it's possible that she is Alphabittle's daughter, and was somehow separated from him years ago.
  • Confirmed as of "Family Trees Pt. 2", where Alphabittle reveals that he's staying in Bridlewood to wait until his daughter comes home, while Misty regains her foalhood memory where he got worried about her wandering off to the Breezie Night Market. They both have a Big Damn Reunion at the end.

—06/17/2023

Pipp and Zipp’s father is dead.
Their father (and Haven’s former husband) is more likely to be deceased as divorce is probably a lot more complicated in their royal family, especially if it involves a monarch and their consort. This could also explain why there are no portraits featuring him and especially why Haven dated Alphabittle in one episode.

—07/27/2023

At some point after the division of the three tribes, each tribe individually re-wrote the story of Twilight and her friends so it made the two ponies representing their tribe look better, and the other four look worse.
  • In the earth ponies' version, Applejack is a good-hearted, honest Working-Class Hero and the others (except Pinkie Pie who is variously portrayed as her best friend, sister, or cousin) are selfish and arrogant because of their natural magic gifts, until she teaches them the meaning of humility and hard work. Twilight and Rarity are stuck up and Rainbow Dash is an arrogant braggart. Fluttershy is treated nicer, almost as an honorary earth pony.
  • In the pegasi version, Rainbow Dash is the brave leader and the others are cowardly, tender-hearted ponies who need a commander to whip them into shape against the assault of a villain, who could be Nightmare Moon, Queen Chrysalis, King Sombra or Tirek, depending on who is telling the story. Fluttershy is her Cowardly Lion sidekick, while Twilight, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Applejack get the Adaptational Wimp treatment and are portrayed as if they've never fought or raised a hoof to anypony before in their lives.
  • In the unicorns' version (which is the closest to reality, if not quite on the mark), Princess Twilight is the wise, benevolent leader and the others are dumb mindless followers who need her guidance to understand the magic of friendship, with Rarity being the first to understand her teachings.

Twilight decided to introduce Equestria to more high tech technology due to her experiences in the human world
That's why in the new generation the pegasi have stuff like smart phone's
—02/09/2024

From the comic books - Discord actually doesn't want to destroy the crystal.
Once again, Discord attempts to teach the ponies lessons through unorthodox methods.

The comics aren't canon
Characters like Milkyway, Mariama and Skye didn't appeared in Make Your Mark, and Sunny and co. didn't even mentioned being to Canterlot and meeting Discord. It could be no surprise that if Discord will appear in MYM, he will look totally different than his "Old Man Discord" look in comics, in addition to having a different personality.
  • Jossed by Violette's appearance in TYT

Twitch is Angel descendant
That's pretty much obvious.

Allura will replace Opaline as g5 Big Bad.

Allura will be Redeeming Replacement to Opaline.
She treats Twitch better than Opaline treated Misty, not to mention that the reason of her Evil Plan is to reunite with her brother. She could even become "Discord" of generation 5.
