    Tsukiyo Hoshifuru

Tsukiyo Hoshifuru

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsukiyo_hoshifuru.PNG

The underworld's most infamous playboy and the ranked third on "Fellow Spy I Want To Kill The Most". He will flirt with anyone, male, female, young or old. For better or worse, Taiyo is his latest crush.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Although he's easy on the eyes, his creepy stalker habits, penchant for Double Entendre, and constant flirting repulses Taiyo.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: A superspy who makes sure to dress in a Waistcoat of Style.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Subverted. After revealing his Secret Test of Character for Taiyo, Taiyo expects that all of Tsukiyo's flirting was just part of his role as a secret proctor. But no, that was just Tsukiyo relaying his personal feelings.
  • Blow You Away: His special moves involve the use of a hand fan to create gusts of wind to maneuver himself through the air.
  • Bridal Carry: Carries Taiyo in one after they end up rescuing each other from plummeting into the water at the end of the test.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: After the rules of the Spy License exam strictly outline that the participants are not allowed to attack each other, Tsukiyo and the other proctors fail a spy who punches Taiyo and broke the rules.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Discussed and defied. Despite living in a world steeped in betrayal and intrigue, he notes that the legitimacy of the Spy Foundation as an institution is founded on tradition and trust. If a spy can't retain their humanity, their clients will lose all trust in them as they're Only in It for the Money. This is why Taiyo is the only one of his exam group to pass: he's the only one who went back to help Tsukiyo despite being given a clear shot to the spy license.
  • Depraved Bisexual: Downplayed. He's a perfectly nice person, but his stalker habits and tendency to lace everything he says with flirtations and Double Entendre creeps Taiyo out.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: His name appears in 3rd place on the "Fellow Spy I Want To Kill The Most" list Ayaka shows Taiyo and Mutsumi seven chapters before his in-person debut.
  • Extreme Omnisexual: He's an infamous playboy who will flirt with anyone and everyone, no matter their age or gender.
  • Foreshadowing: The ease with which he passes through the Spy License exam's trials foreshadows that he's not merely another participant, but actually a secret proctor.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Despite his Bishōnen appearance, he easily drags Taiyo along against his will.
  • Razor Wind: He dices an incoming projectile to bits with a single swing of his fan.
  • Secret Test of Character: He masquerades as one of the spies taking the Spy License exam to observe how the participants act. Out of all of them, Taiyo is the only one to go back after Tsukiyo saves him from failure just to help him out. This is why Tsukiyo passes Taiyo, as the Spy Foundation's legitimacy is founded on tradition and trust.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Well, single man seeks good man. But the thing he finds most attractive about people is their humanity. Anyone can be a spy and become an amoral monster. But the ones who manage to thrive and remain good people stand out to him. This is what gets him interested in Taiyo, a rising rookie who remains stubbornly moral even with his life on the line.
  • Stalker with a Crush: He's eerily similar to Ayaka in that he stalked Taiyo all throughout his adventures just to collect his hair samples and other fibers to sow a keychain that looks like him.

    Me-chan

Me-chan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/me_chan_yozakura_family.PNG

A silver-ranked spy and the curator of the Library of the Dead, which catalogues the records of people who have died or gone missing. She believes that the records of the dead should be respected at all costs, which is why she enforces absolute silence in the library with lethal force.

  • The Dreaded: All who enter of the Library of the Dead are wary of her because of how fast and deadly she is. All those who don't heed her warning are quickly Impaled with Extreme Prejudice.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Her favorite form of punishment is to stab her foes with her claws so precisely that they'll be paralyzed and in excruciating pain without actually killing them. The victims will inevitably suffer limb or sensory damage from the experience depending on how loud of a noise they made.
  • Logical Weakness: Her sensitive "glass ears" that let her hear anything in the Library of the Dead also mean that she's incredibly sensitive to sudden loud noises, which allows Mutsumi to stop her by shouting through a microphone to knock her out from the Sensory Overload.
  • Knight Templar: Subverted. She appears to be this because of her brutal enforcement of the library's rule of silence. In actuality, she just loves inflicting pain and uses the library's creed as an excuse to dole out as much as possible.
  • Sensory Overload: How she's defeated. Her sensitive "glass ears" can't handle being shocked by a sudden loud noise. So when Mutsumi cranks up the volume on Taiyo's headphones to the max and shouts through them, Me-chan is completely overwhelmed and knocked unconscious.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: For all of her talk of respecting the dead, it's clear that she loves violence and inflicting pain, as shown when she practically coos at the thought of murdering Taiyo and holding his body in her arms.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks a lot like an older version of her little sister Mi-chan.
  • Super-Senses: She has incredibly sharp hearing and can hear any sound anywhere in the massive Library of the Dead. Her hearing is so precise that she can easily navigate the library in complete darkness and claims to be able to hear the sound of Taiyo's soul.
  • Wolverine Claws: Her weapons of choice are clawed gloves that grow half as long as she is tall, stabbing her victims so precisely that she can piece their necks without bleeding or inflicting lethal damage.

    Sosuke Michibata

Sosuke Michibata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sosuke_michibata_yozakura_family.PNG

A spy who happens to go to Taiyo's and Mutsumi's school. He's so unremarkable that he can render himself almost completely unnoticeable, which makes him an expert in information gathering and infiltration. But despite his meager success as a bronze-level spy, he quickly grows envious of Taiyo for having the odds stacked in his favor.

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Unfortunately for Sosuke, his crush on Mutsumi is doomed to go nowhere fast as she's already Happily Married to Taiyo.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: He's completely infatuated with Mutsumi for noticing him and remembering his name when he picked up her eraser once.
  • Blessed with Suck: Sosuke's skill at becoming effectively invisible is amazing for infiltration and stealing info. But it also means that he's rarely noticed by anyone around him. People mistake him for an empty seat on the train, he's ignored by all of his crushes, and never gets served at restaurants.
  • The Chew Toy: He gives Taiyo a run for his money in the sheer amount of slapstick thrown at him. But unlike Taiyo, Sosuke's irritating and perverted nature makes it more cathartic than anything to see him get slapped around.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Deconstructed. His lack of presence means that all of his crushes never even notice him or learn his name, prompting him to find consolation in taking pictures of them in secret before furiously deleting them when the girl inevitably ends up with someone else. Rather than make him sympathetic, this makes him come across as pathetic and irritating, not to mention the fact that his hobby would make him a criminal. It's also shown that he's terrible romantically even without his invisibility taken into account, as he tells a girl he took a bullet for, "You taught me how soft boobs are!" Prompting her to wonder what the hell is wrong with him.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!:
    • Taiyo's attempts to extend an olive branch and get Sosuke to stop berating himself end up only pissing Sosuke off, who sees it as Condescending Compassion.
Sosuke: We're "both spies"? Don't give me that crap. A main character like you who's fussed over by everyone... will never notice a supporting character like me.
    • After Taiyo saves Sosuke's spy license, Sosuke is irritated at how nice Taiyo is and asks him why he's doing this at all.
  • Dramatic Irony: From his perspective, Taiyo has it easy and doesn't have a care in the world. Sosuke is clearly unaware of all of Taiyo's trials and tribulations, including losing his entire family to a car accident, having Kyoichiro plot to kill him every single day, and being grievously injured and nearly killed on numerous occasions.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Sosuke despises Taiyo for having everything he doesn't: an ideal training environment in the Yozakuras, a cute wife in Mutsumi, and recognition for his efforts and exploits as the top rookie spy. Because of this, Sosuke makes it his mission to drive a wedge between Taiyo and Mutsumi as a form of revenge, but ends up failing miserably.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: After setting a trip wire to make a fool of Taiyo, Sosuke ends up tripping on it while fleeing Taiyo's lightning gun.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: He got into spying solely because his lack of presence made him good at it, but wants to settle down with a girl and lead a normal life.
  • Invisible Streaker: He apparently practiced his ability to eliminate his presence by dancing around in the street in only his underwear.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Sosuke is aware that he's a supporting character and hates Taiyo for being the "protagonist-type", citing it a reason why he's so envious of him.
  • Logical Weakness: Even if he's effectively invisible, he's not invincible, and anyone who can hear him can catch him rather easily. Sosuke learns this the hard way when he gives a satisfied snort after escaping Taiyo, only to get a lightning gun to the back for his troubles.
  • Mundane Utility: His skills at evasion and stealth make it easy for him to snatch the last melon bread at a packed stall. He also uses it to entertain himself by snapping secret photos of all the girls he has a crush on.
  • The Peeping Tom: Taiyo points out that Sosuke's hobby of shooting photos of his classmates without their permission is a crime. Not only that, it's creepy enough that Mutsumi immediately orders Taiyo to zap Sosuke at maximum power when she discovers them.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: He accepts a dangerous assignment to protect a girl to keep him from losing his spy license (and the associated benefits) at the very last minute. In doing so, he believes he's finally scored the girl of his dreams and goes so far as to take a bullet for her. But they're soon cornered by members of the mafia and have to be rescued by Taiyo, upon which the girl (actually a burglar) ditches him as she only saw him as a stupid bodyguard. His own consolation for going so far is that Taiyo listed him as a partner on his assignment, saving Sosuke's spy license.
  • Smug Snake: After disappearing from Taiyo's sight, Sosuke is so confident in his escape that he lets out a satisfied snort, kicking Taiyo's instincts into gear and earning Sosuke a lightning gun shot to the back.
  • Stalker with a Crush: He has a habit of chasing after pretty girls in secret and taking photos of them without their knowledge or consent as a consolation prize for being unable to actually get with any of them. Taiyo pointedly reminds him that this kind of behavior is a crime.
  • Stealth Expert: His specialty, "Heat Haze", has him consciously suppress his breathing, heartbeat, and presence until he's effectively invisible, making it appear as though he vanished into thin air or teleported.

    Kenji

Kenji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kenji_yozakura_family.PNG

A young spy in his first year of middle school and a member of Team Shion, a group of hackers who foil criminal plots across the globe, under the name "Kenzi". He wasn't born with a talent for the physical part of being a spy, which his parents shame him for.

  • Abusive Parents: His parents, Tetsuo and Retsuko, are muscular silver-rank spies who place a great deal of value in the hands-on part of spywork. They disapprove of Kenji's preference for online work and video games to Insane Troll Logic levels and decide to lock him inside a room until he agrees to give up video games forever. It's only after his analytical skills defeat them (with Taiyo's help) that they turn around and acknowledge Kenji's own talents.
  • Awesome by Analysis: He analyzed hundreds of his parents' own attack patterns and pinpointed the weak point in all of them, allowing Taiyo to easily tie them up with Steel Spider.
  • Badass Adorable: He's only a first-year middle school student but is a bronze-rank spy who helps Shion foil everything from nuclear missile launches to terrorism.
  • Does Not Like Spam: His introduction card says that he doesn't like milk, likely because it reminds me how he's not physically imposing like his parents.
  • Geek Physique: He was never able to work out like his parents and as such remains short and skinny in comparison to their towering physiques.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Unlike his extremely burly parents, Kenji wasn't born with an interest or talent for physical activity. This is what draws him to Team Shion, but is also a source of shame for his parents,
  • My Nayme Is: His username is just a slightly altered spelling of his real name ("ji" and "zi" are written almost identically in hiragana and katakana, but have a marking added to indicate the change in pronunciation).
  • Precocious Crush: He's a middle schooler who clearly has a thing for the college-aged Shion. She even calls him a "precocious brat", but she gets really fussy when it comes to picking clothes to meet with him in real life. The way she blushes when he tells her how flattered she is that she dressed up nicely to see him implies that the feelings may be mutual.

    Kai Izumo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kai_14.png

The leader of the Spy Association and a friend of Kyoichiro.

  • Commonality Connection: As a fellow civilian-turned-spy, Kai knows how rough it is for normal people to try to cut it in the spy world, which is why he interfered in Kyoichiro’s Training from Hell towards Taiyo and helps Taiyo progress in a slower and steadier pace.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: 9 years before the story, he lost both his parents and sister in a car accident, which also was how he gained his Super-Senses and Hyper-Awareness that made his life difficult for him.
  • The Gadfly: Pretends to be a janitor at first for no other reason than messing with Taiyo.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partner: With Kyoichiro.
  • Hyper-Awareness: Kai is extraordinarily observant, having pieced together Kyoichiro's spy activities in middle school long before Kyoichiro came clean to him. This, combined with his own rigorous training, allows Kai to attack with Ludicrous Mêlée Accuracy, letting him dice weaponry to pieces and cut along the grain of skin cells to minimize bleeding.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Downplayed. In a world where weapons like Taiyo's Yae exist, Kai's weapon of choice is a box cutter. That being said...
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He’s a handsome and well-built young man with lustrous long hair.
  • Ludicrous Mêlée Accuracy: His accuracy with said box cutter is to the point where he can sever people's nerves without drawing blood.
  • Pressure Point: Thanks to his enhanced senses, Izumo can accurately find and strike a target's pressure points to provide the body what it needs. He's also used his understanding of pressure points to assist his allies, such as reducing their exhaustion or increasing their focus and boosting their reflexes just to name a few.
  • Reluctant Ruler: Kai doesn't like being in his position but was forced into it by Kyoichiro because he was perfectly suited for it.
  • Sensory Overload: At first, Kai's Super-Senses led to his brain receiving a massive influx of information that caused him great pain, requiring him to take a variety of pain killers and wear contact lenses and earplugs just to function.
  • Super-Senses: Due to a brain injury caused by a car accident, all of Kai's senses began to develop exponentially and he can identify details that would normally escape a normal human’s perception with little efforts, such as the exact type and quantity of cologne Kyoichiro puts on in the morning or the grooves in which Kyoichiro's Steel Spider cut into him as well as the depth of them by touching the latter’s hands through his gloves.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Kai was once a normal boy who suffered daily from Sensory Overload, but after meeting and undergoing Training from Hell under Kyoichiro, Kai has learned to better control his senses and put them to use as a spy. He then became a Gold Rank spy and was qualified for the leadership of the Spy Association in Kyoichiro’s place.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Kai is shown to be a fan of Crunchy Senbei Rice Crackers and repeatedly seen eating them, even when Kyoichiro is threatening him. The exact type he prefers are a type of soy sauce flavoured cracker which is rare to find.

    Alexandryu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alexandryu.png
The musclebound editor-in-chief of the popular tabloid Spy Day and a gold-rank spy in the Association.
  • Badass Normal: Compared to some other fellow gold-rank spies, he doesn't have anything particularly flashy. He's still strong enough with raw strength alone to reduce a monster to a stain in one punch.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Sports one of these while brutally crushing a parasite in his arms..
  • Da Editor: Alexandryu is the editor-in-chief of Spy Day, one of the most popular tabloids in the spy world. His connections give him dirt on basically everyone in the industry, making him respected and feared for his ability to make or destroy people's reputations with nothing but a pen.
  • Dirty Old Man: He's old enough to be the Yozakuras' father and is shamelessly flirtatious with other men and is introduced groping Shinzo and commenting on his physical growth.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Due to his position, Alexandryu has access to dirt on basically everyone in the spy community. He gleefully abuses this to Blackmail them into doing his bidding, lest they face "social annihilation" by having all of their most embarrassing secrets unleashed into the world. As a result, most spies hate him and only help him because they have to. Even when he invites the spy community to his arranged marriage between his daughter Katana and Shinzo Yozakura, almost all of the attendees are people he's coerced into attending.
  • Friend to All Children: He frequents the Spy Association's orphanage to look after the children there and help them with their training. The children themselves adore him and call him "Mama Ryu". Alexandryu is especially livid when Momo's monsters try to masquerade as the orphaned children and plans to make Momo pay for the harm he's inflicted on the Yozakura siblings.
  • Genius Bruiser: Alexandryu is ludicrously strong, reducing most opponents to a blood smear with a single attack and taking blows that can easily crush concrete and steel with a sneer on his face. He's also a highly perceptive journalist with a vast information network due to his work as the Da Editor of Spy Day.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He is a Parental Substitute to his adoptive daughter, Katana. But despite showering her with love, affection, and attention, he constantly feels inadequate as a father and wishes she would have a "real" family to return to.
  • Hyper-Awareness: As the editor-in-chief of Spy Day and a gold-rank spy, Alexandryu possesses an incredible memory and an absurd level of attention to detail. He's able to deduce an impostor from among the kids he takes care of every day by how the fake Tobio has eyes "three percent paler" than the real thing and fingers "two millimeters" shorter.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: Blames himself for the death of Tatemi, his crush and adoptive daughter's biological father.
  • Immoral Journalist: While he's an Intrepid Reporter, he's just as happy to publish slander and libel against people he doesn't like if he doesn't have sufficient amounts of dirt on someone. Given how popular Spy Day is, it doesn't matter if it's the truth or not.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Alexandryu still does field work as a reporter for his magazine. He goes so far as to allow himself to be struck by a tentacle designed to inflict "searing" pain that would cause ordinary people to "disintegrate" just so he can record the details for the article he plans to write.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Make no mistake, despite his friendly exterior, he's a gold-rank spy for a reason.
  • Made of Iron: Despite not having any superpowers akin to the Yozakuras, Alexandryu is famously resilient. Attacks that can crush concrete and steel can only barely make him flinch, and he has barely any reaction to the "burning pain" he feels when injected with a venomous tentacle. He's so tough that onlookers are shocked when Taiyo's True Spring Blooming brings Alexandryu to his knees with a single blow.
  • Manly Gay: He's muscular and was in love with his daughter's biological father.
  • Mentor Archetype: Years ago, Shinzo frequently went to Alexandryu for spy lessons because Kyoichiro and Futaba were way too strict and terrifying. In the present, Alexandryu acts as a mentor and Parental Substitute for the orphans currently living at the Spy Association's Orphanage of Love.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: He's even more buff than Shinzo and has the absurd physical strength to match, reducing a monster to a blood stain with a single punch.
  • My Greatest Failure: He's never forgiven himself for allowing his crush Tatemi to die when the latter refused to spill anything about Alexandryu to his enemies, to the point he tries to push Katana to marry Shinzo to give her a "real" family despite said daughter having never blamed him for what happened and loves him as a father.
  • Older Than They Look: He doesn't look too old, but he's actually old enough to be the Yozakuras' father.
  • Parental Substitute: He's a loving father to his adoptive daughter, Katana, who appreciates his constant affection and care. But he feels inadequate compared to her actual father, whom Ryu failed to save fifteen years ago. So he arranges a marriage between her and Shinzo for the sake of giving her a "real" family above her own protests, while blackmailing anyone who tries to stop it.

    Shura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shura_6.png
A Cyborg and a gold-rank spy.

    Lando

One of Alpha and Hifumi's classmates at Teiou Academy and a six-year-old silver rank spy.

  • Bratty Half-Pint: He's introduced mocking Hifumi for not doing well in her fight with Futaba, earning Alpha's ire in the process. He continues to pester Alpha constantly in class after Alpha shocked him as revenge for Hifumi.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Lando was sold off by his parents to an unknown organization that abused him and made him resentful of all adults until he met Taiyo, who ignored his assigned mission in favor of rescuing Lando and the other children with him. Lando is eternally grateful for Taiyo's kindness and has become his biggest fan. The thought of seeing him again over video chat has him shaking with excitement and nervousness. He even asks Taiyo to adopt him, much to Alpha's annoyance.
  • Super-Speed: Lando is proud of his speed and casually dodges eraser bits that Alpha threw hard enough to break the sound barrier.
