Addendum: Silver Vixen exists as a redirect for female characters.

I know its already been discussed, but why not make a YMMV page? Real life examples could go there instead of the main page, plus there are a few characters on the main page that not everyone would agree belongs in this trope.

How is this not the same as Silver Fox? This is female-specific, whereas the other covers both genders and most examples are male there, but otherwise both are "person who is attractive despite their old age".

So, why is THIS a "No Real Life Examples" page, but the Silver Fox page isn't? Oversight or double standard?

Why don't you just use a fictional example for the page picture and then put real life examples on YMMV?

Examples are being moved here for at least one of the following reasons.

Please remember Grandma, What Massive Hotness You Have! deals with cases where a character is visible old but is still portrayed as attractive. If they're any examples that fit those two traits then re add them with context that makes that explicitly clear.

    open/close all folders

    Anime and Manga
  • Somewhat strangely, a subversion of this occurs in the Distant Finale of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Almost everyone who was older after the first timeskip looks like they aged rather badly, with Rossiu and Simon getting the worst of it, and apparently this happened to Yoko as well, so much so her face is probably not seen in this segment because like her figure (which seems to have taken the ravages of time less well then expected), it's gone downhill rather badly. The only ones who seem to have been immune to this were the ones who were still young after the first timeskip and Leeron (who is far too fabulous to age).
  • One Piece
    • Shakky also counts here. She tells Luffy that she was chased by Garp in the past, but she gave up being a pirate forty years ago. Makes you wonder how old she is.
      • Shakky is also seen in a flashback, and over the years doesn't seem to have aged a day.
  • Dragon Ball Z has Bulma's mom, and eventually Chichi. Bulma herself too, if you count Dragonball GT.
  • Similar to Sanae, Lindy of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is actually fairly young, with estimates for her current age as of StrikerS being somewhere in her mid to late forties (her actual age is never given, but side materials mentioned that she was in her early to mid twenties when her husband died). However, as of the third season, she currently has up to five grandkids through both Chrono and Fate and she still looks as hot as she did before the Time Skip.
    • Precia Testarossa from season one looks like a woman in her late 20's or 30's. Her actual age, as revealed in the supplementary material is actually 54. This is a woman who has spent countless hours researching on how to revive her diseased daughter (even implied to not sleep for days) yet she does not have a single wrinkle on her.
  • In Full Metal Panic, Gauron (not so much in the anime, but in the "Sigma" manga) looks rather rugged and handsome, despite being at least 50.
    • Or, for those of us who don't like them Ax-Crazy, there's also silver-haired Cool Old Guy Andrei Kalinin.
  • Fujimoto from Ponyo On A Cliff By The Sea. Even though his age isn't specified, he seems old enough to qualify.
  • Balalaika, the leader of Hotel Moscow from Black Lagoon, is one of the oldest characters in the regular cast (save possibly Sister Yolanda from the Church of Violence), but is still attractive, even with half of her face scarred all to hell.
  • While most of the adult women in Umineko No Naku Koro Ni are quite attractive, Eva probably takes the cake. She's got to be at least 50 and she doesn't look a day over 30. Probably doesn't hurt that she's mastered numerous martial arts and kept her figure extremely fit. This is particularly notable in episode 19 of the anime during a scene that shows her and little Ange at a fancy dinner party, seen here. Oddly enough, only twelve years after the Rokkenjima incident we see that she's aged like a zombie, possibly due to the fact that she developed a heart condition that eventually kills her.
  • Hellsing has Walter who is a Stupid Sexy Flanders to many fans, despite being at least in his late 60s. Also Integra after the Time Skip; the narration even mentions it.
  • In Change 123, Motoko's grandmother doesn't look a day over 40.
  • Thorkell the Tall from Vinland Saga.
  • Sanae and Akio Furukawa from CLANNAD have a daughter who is already a Hot Mom but the two never ever seem to age. Apparently, there doesn't seem to be any magic or anything supernatural involved. Considering the type of show it is this makes a certain amount of sense, and the only people who ever age are the wise grandfatherly types.
  • Leesha, the Commander of the Saint exploration ship in Mahoromatic, looks rather youthful and and attractive, even though she is old enough to be Suguru's grandmother. In actual fact, she is his grandmother.

    Comic Books
  • The Ultimate Marvel version of Aunt May. And Uncle Ben. They both look pretty young.
  • Old Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight Returns certainly still holds the appeal he always had.
  • Jacob Kane, father of Kate Kane, the modern Batwoman, is in at least his 50s or 60s but is still pretty good looking. It probably helps that he's a career Army Colonel.

    Film
  • Mimi Rogers, in The Door in the Floor. This 50+ beauty appears alongside a still-got-it Kim Basinger - who was born in December 1953 (58 yo). (The plot of the book is that she has an affair with a teenager, who goes on to always be attracted to MUCH older women. When they meet again, the character is in her 70s—and still hot, in his eyes).
  • Played with in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. While Catherine Keener, and her character, was/is in her early 40s, she has a grandchild. This leads to a number of "hot grandma" jokes.

    Literature
  • The author introduction to "The Worlds of Robert Heinlein" predicts that future advances in cosmetics and plastic surgery will result in a society full of hot grandmas.
    • Not to mention many of Heinlein's later works where many aging characters undergo 'rejuvenation' to regain youthful bodies.

    Live-Action TV
  • Agnes Moorehead's Endora in Bewitched. Creepy, yes; kooky, yes. But hot, nevertheless.
    • Ironic, too, because in her youth, Moorehead usually played very dowdy and matronly characters.
  • Battlestar Galactica (Reimagined)
    • President Laura Roslin. Ye Gods.
    • Admiral Adama is a Foxy Grandpa. Mrrow.
  • Several from NCIS:
    • Gibbs.
    • Jenny Shepherd.
    • David McCallum. He's almost eighty and Fan Girls' hearts still flutter. Well, he is Illya Kuryakin, after all.
  • Honor Blackman in the ITV sitcom The Upper Hand (and also in Real Life).
  • The actresses in so many pharmaceutical commercials now.
  • Theodore 'T-Bag' Bagwell from Prison Break.
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation: Both Captain Picard and Doctor Crusher. It helps that Patrick Stewart was named "Sexiest Man on Television" by TV Guide in 1992, and Dr. Crusher (played by Gates Mc Fadden) started out the series as a Hot Mom (she was only 38 in the first season), but by the end of the movies she definitely fits this trope.
  • In Mystery Science Theater 3000, Crow T. Robot falls for Estelle Winwood hard in the episode with The Magic Sword. Tom makes fun of him for it, but Joel gives his blessing.
  • Blanche Deveraux in The Golden Girls. And boy, does she take advantage of it.
  • The titular character of Reba.
  • Susan Mayer's mother Sophie in Desperate Housewives, played by Lesley Ann Warren.
  • In CSI NY Mac Taylor definitely fits this trope.
  • The Old Guys has several attractive older women as recurring characters, particularly Sally and "Sexy Barbara" the Hot Librarian.
  • Mona from Whos The Boss.
  • Kyra Sedgwick's Brenda Leigh Johnson on The Closer.
  • Resident sex-bomb Rose from Keeping Up Appearances is portrayed by fifty-something Mary Millar and her age-defying legs.
  • The Sarah Jane Adventures had the titular Sarah Jane, also of Doctor Who fame, who remained heartbreakingly lovely until the day Elisabeth Sladen passed away, in spite of her battle with the cancer that claimed her life.
  • Mythbusters has Jamie Hyneman. He's in great shape for being over fifty.
  • In 1971, then 38-year old Eileen Fulton had a clause put in her contract that her As The World Turns character Lisa could not become a grandmother (a clause which would remain in effect for some fifteen years), as she was involved in a number of romantic, front-burner storylines, and feared that if Lisa became a grandmother, she would "be put in an apron, sent to the kitchen and forgotten". In the mid-80s, when Lisa's on-screen daughter-in-law suffered a miscarriage on the show, viewers assumed it was due to Fulton's "no grandmother" clause, and the actress was inundated with hate mail.
  • Law & Order featured Sam Waterston as Jack McCoy. At the series' end, Waterston was 70 years old, but certainly didn't look like it.
  • Law & Order: Special Victims Unit explored this in an episode where an elderly woman was killed with a man of similar age on top of her. After he was cleared, the search led to a somewhat "unconventional" individual who just so happened to have a rather... titillating senior in waiting. It turned out the actual killer was the dead woman's daughter, who just so happened to be 30Rock's Jenna Maroney.
  • The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode "Mac Bangs Dennis's Mom". The title pretty much says it all.
  • Lesley Ann Warren as Jinx Shannon in In Plain Sight. In her sixties, two adult daughters, alcoholic for 30+ years, and can still work a leotard.
  • Diana Rigg as Mrs Bradley in The Mrs Bradley Mysteries.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer has Giles.
  • Michael Emerson as both Ben Linus and Harold Finch. The man just has magnetism.
  • Jane from The New Normal. For a great-grandmother she looks pretty darned good.
  • Emily Gilmore from Gilmore Girls. Granted, it's an important plot point that she is a young grandmother, but still.

    Table Top Games
  • Natasha Kerensky of the Battle Tech universe may just be the epitome of this trope. She looked like this around the age of 80, after over 60 years in combat!

    Video Games
  • Several characters in Fire Emblem, the most notable being Sean Connery-double Duessel and Big Boss-lookalike Lorenz.
  • In Metal Gear Solid 4, Snake, due to accelerated aging, looks like he's in his 60s, and he's still a Stupid Sexy Flanders. From the same game, Big Mama a.k.a. EVA is possibly the only woman in her 80s to pull off Absolute Cleavage without setting off massive squick alarms.
    • What about "The Boss", in the same vein as Big Mama. That's pretty damn good for a woman pushing past middle-age. With a child. Delivered by C-Section. During the Invasion of NORMANDY.
      • The Boss is more of a MILF. Canonically she was born in 1922, which makes her 42 in the game. Not a bad age to still be attractive at, but not quite at this level yet.
      • Let's not forget Big Boss shall we.
      • The Sorrow has a massive amount of fangirls, despite the fact that he looks like a 70-year-old man.
    • Not to mention Ocelot
  • Mainly it's because of the art style in Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, but Julius Belmont looks pretty damn fine for a 55 year old. Unfortunately, he looked like a damn Dwarf in Dawn.
  • Janus Hassildor, Count of Skingrad, possibly qualifies, as he is over 200 years old. Mind you, he's a vampire...
  • City Of Heroes has a few. Statesman (pictured center in the title bar) fought in World War I. And then there's Sister Psyche (to Statesman's right), who can "mind-ride," inhabiting another person's body and stopping her aging; technically, she's over eighty years old.
  • Auron. Going by appearance he looks 50. He's actually 35. It also states that he died at 25, so that's including the time that he's been an unsent. Nonetheless, he certainly looks worn and craggy enough to qualify.
  • Final Fantasy XII Cid, Balthier's father, and the official Cid of the game. While not a grandpa he's old enough and has the silver hair to prove it.
  • In Resident Evil 5, Albert Wesker is 48 years old (ten years older than he was in the first game). And most people admit he's damn hot.
  • Dragon Age II
    • Not to mention Leandra Hawke. She looks roughly fifty, but is still a looker and has a figure not far off from that of her daughter Bethany - who is 18 when the story starts.
    • Even Snarky!Hawke thinks that Meredith looks somewhat attractive for her age.
  • In Mass Effect, Doctor Chakwas — despite having lived a long life, as she put it — is still very shapely. She's easily in her fifties.
    • If you take her service history into account, you'll realise that she has to be around 70 years old.
      • Fridge Brilliance: Of course that in the future, where genetic fixing and splicing is the norm and medicine is so much more advanced, people would have longer lifespans and look younger!
    • Asari don't seem to age nearly as much as humans. Samara can still pull off that Absolute Cleavage outfit at nearly a thousand.
  • The Eld Witch in A Witchs Tale manages to be both this and Nightmare Fuel.
  • The Medic from Team Fortress 2 is probably the oldest member of the team. Most people judge him as being in his mid-to-late 50s, but admit it, you'd still do him. I don't care if you're a straight man, for sure you'd hit that.
    • Heck, most of the cast is in their middle age, and they all appeal to someone's fetish, all with their own devoted group of fangirls - and fanboys.
  • Ansem the Wise, Even/Vexen (minus the stupid expressions they give him, he is rather handsome!) and Master Eraqus from the Kingdom Hearts series. Also Xigbar. He has partially grey hair but that's no issue (and just look at Braig...).
  • The third Sengoku Basara introduces the character of Kobayakawa Hideaki, Mouri Motonari's grandson... his teenage grandson. Given that Motonari looks like a Bishōnen in his early twenties, we can only assume both he and his child have mysteriously managed to father offspring at about age five.
    • Capcom have mentioned adoption around the topic of Kobayakawa and his granddad. Which begs the question - where are Mouri's sons?
  • Completely averted in the game Banjo Kazooie, where the evil witch Grunty is portrayed as being an ugly, old woman, but played straight when you get a Game Over.
  • By Memetic Mutation only, the "old hags" of Touhou: Yukari Yakumo, Yuyuko Saigyouji, Eirin Yagokoro, Kanako Yasaka, and Byakuren Hijiri. The last of whom is pretty much canonically Fetish Fuel Unleaded, favoring a bondage-tastic Elegant Gothic Lolita dress and spells that emphasize her physical traits and beauty. Worth noting that all youkai in Touhou are drastically Older Than They Look unless otherwise specified.
    • Suwako Moriya plays this trope literally, being the ancestor of Sanae Kochiya, older than Gensokyo, and looking like a little grade school girl.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Twinrova's combined form. Link's reaction mirrors that of many players. Especially notable given how withered-looking Koume and Kotake are separately.
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
  • Other examples from the series include Leonardo Da Vinci, along with both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and his wife Maria Thorpe.
  • No More Heroes: Naomi, if sources connected to the games are to be believed, is actually 60 plus years old. You would never think to look at her!
  • One of the routes in Hatoful Boyfriend suggests that Dr. Shuu is probably about the same age as Ryouta's parents... and in Ryouta's route, it's mentioned that old age is a factor in his mother's failing health. Of course, considering he's still a bird, Dr. Shuu might still be chronologically younger than the heroine.

    Webcomics
  • Mrs Maharassa from Friendly Hostility, as demonstrated by this strip.
  • The version of Diane Adams (Miss Masque) that appears in Heroes Inc seems to follow this trope. The creator even did a nude pin-up drawing of her as a voting incentive.
  • Moira from Shadowgirls. Possibly because Evil Is Sexy.
  • General Tarquin from The Order of the Stick, according to a side comment by Haley after the revelation that he's Elan's father.
  • Marten's father, Henry, from Questionable Content, according to a similar side comment by Dora.
  • Mama Fisi from Carry On. Her gray wig is the only sign that she could possibly have mid-20s grandchildren.
  • Brenner from Claude & Monet is well into his fifties and is in better shape than most of the people half his age.

    Web Original
  • Aaliyah Soldari from the Welcome to Omega serial novel most certainly fits the bill. Two hundred years old and still beautiful enough to make men faint.
  • Headmistress Elizabeth Carson of the Super Hero School Whateley Academy in the Whateley Universe. She's in her 70s, and looks early- to mid-30s. She'd look like a movie starlet, but she's too authoritative.
  • The "Mature" section of Literotica takes this interesting places.

    Western Animation
  • As The Spectacular Spider-Man follows Ultimate Marvel, Aunt May is quite the looker. Another contributing factor may be Only Six Faces, as she looks almost exactly like Gwen with gray hair and a bun.
  • Same goes for the Aunt May from the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. The fact that she's also a Cool Old Lady helps too.
  • While one is not seen in SpongeBob SquarePants, Mr. Krabs once tries to get a MacGuffin from SpongeBob by offering to trade it for a box full of stuff, including a baseball cap that says 'foxy grandpa'. SpongeBob finds the cap amusing.
  • From Avatar: The Last Airbender:
    • Lots of people seem to have the hots for Iroh.
    • There's also Avatar Kyoshi, who lived to be over 200 years old, and still has plenty of admirers.
    • Also, Piandao and, for some, Avatar Roku.
    • Everyone is gay for Iroh.
    • One might argue Pakku could count as well.
    • Basically, Avatar has proven that old guys with beards can be just as sexy as Zuko, the Troubled, but Cute Anti-Villain.
  • In The Legend of Korra. Lin Bei Fong is badass and beautiful at 50, and Tenzin (51) has quite a few admirers as well. Despite having only a brief cameo with one line, Tenzin's older brother Bumi, from the season finale, certainly has a following as well.
  • Ben and Gwen's grandmother Verdona in Ben 10: Alien Force is quite GILF-y.
    • Grandpa Max isn't half-bad either.
  • Halinor the Ex-Guardian of Fire and Queen Kadma on the second season of W.I.T.C.H.. In fact, when we see the older Guardians in their original young forms, they're all very...generously endowed and physically mature in appearance.
    • For that matter, Will's mom Susan, Irma's mom and Cornelia's mom all range from beautiful to downright gorgeous. MILF-y indeed!
  • Ned Flanders (Stupid Sexy Flanders himself) is over 60. Really.
  • Grandma Spankenheimer from Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer is certainly cute.
  • Happens briefly to Granny Smith in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic when she gets her hip replacement in Applejack's fantasy.
    • Technically, Princesses Celestia and Luna as well, assuming they ever had (or will have) children. Despite their true age they're still in their prime and any description of them contains some permutation of beautiful, stunning, etc. Well sometimes "scary" fits in as well. Being two of the most magical creatures in Equestria likely has something to do with it, no word if any of the other royal Alicorns have the same traits.

1) Could you please add folder control markup so the folders can be collapsed all in one go, instead of having to manually scroll down the long post?

2) By "visibly old but still portrayed as attractive", do you mean something like the current article image? Because otherwise that would require in-universe explicit statements to that effect, which isn't always the case.

But there is no laconic definition provided.

So is this a Sub-Trope of Older Than They Look (and maybe of another Super-Trope), or is it an independent trope that occasionally crosses over with it?

If it's the latter, then why the "Do not confuse with Older Than They Look" warning? Wouldn't a "compare" notice be more appropiate?

Wouldn't Older Than They Look be pretty much anyone who looks way younger than they are, and this trope being older people who look hot?

It doesn't say anything about them looking young, does it (I wouldn't mistake the page image for a teenager, for sure...)?

What's the difference between a Real Life Example and some of the actresses who are freely quoted and referenced on the L Ive Action TV page? Or indeed Helen Mirren?

If there was a FILM category here, I'd have been delighted to quote the wow.... Mimi Rogers, or Susan Sarandon, together with film appearances where both have shown how well-preserved they are.. but automatically, they'd also be Real Life Examples as both are over 55, still working, and alive in the world... if it's permissible to name living actresses on TV, then surely also for film?

The page picture here, currently of Katey Segal, should be changed. Katey Segal herself is, no question, a definite example of this trope, she looks fabulous, but the picture being used to demonstrate this is...not quite so fabulous. Her eyes look to be two different colors (And not Boat Lights), her smile is oddly crooked and the overall impression is of somebody who isn't attractive trying to look like the are.

Even the most gorgeous of people can have bad picturs taken and this certainly counts. The replacement can still be Katey, but it really should be one that doesn't make people reading the article go "Huh,interesting concept, but is that what they're talking about?"
