• Batman Can Breathe in Space: Episode 5 has Yuna and Togo flying into space to destroy the giant Vertex core without any problems.
  • Possibly justified in that the Heroes are immortal.
  • Since Shikoku Island is inside of a universe-sized barrier created by the Shinju, it may not actually be space.
• Character Development: After learning the truth about Mankai and the Hero system, the girls slowly overcome their disabilities and flaws of their own personalities, and become stronger heroes. This is especially true with Itsuki, who despite losing her voice, becomes more determined to stand beside her older sister rather than cower behind her
  • Over the course of the series, Karin goes from somebody who sees no room for fun or friendship in her life as a Hero to someone who would gladly fight to protect her friends. This culminates in her telling Yuna in Episode 11 that from now on she'll no longer fight as a Hero of the Taisha, but as a member of the Hero Club.
• Discard and Draw: The modified hero system the Taisha create during Yuki Yuna is a Hero: Hero Chapter works like this in order to compensate for the fact that Mankai no longer takes their body parts away. The Heroes now automatically have their Mankai gauge at 100% meaning that they can now use Mankai at the start of a fight. However unlike before the Heroes can't fill up their gauges during battle and every hit they take ends up draining them of their gauges. If the gauge hits zero their fairies will no longer be able to protect them from harm and they will be left vulnerable to death. Likewise if they do use Mankai at the start of the fight their gauges will be completely depleted once the Mankai is over leaving them vulnerable.
• Fairy Companion: Each member has one, except for Togo, who has three. At the end of Episode 7, Fu gets another fairy, while Yuna, Togo and Itsuki get theirs in Episode 8. Sonoko has twenty-one.
  • It's revealed that the Heroes gain new fairies every time they use Mankai, which each fairy granting them new attacks. The fact that Togo starts with three is the first hint that she's been a Hero before.
• Flower Motifs:
  • Each girl has a different kind of flower as part of her clothing's motifs.
  • Mankai is also a reference to a flower blooming to its max before it starts wilting. This latter process is called "Sange".
• Hour of Power: When the Heroes begin the sealing process they only have a limited amount of sealing power, during which the Heroes have to destroy the Vertex's core.
• Kid Hero: The club members are no older than 14 and their youngest member is only around 12 years old.
• Locked Out of the Loop: Yuna, Togo and Itsuki were initially unaware of the Hero Club's special activity: protecting the world from the Vertex.
• Magical Girl Warrior: Their Hero forms basically turn them into a combination of Magical Girl and Henshin Hero, including getting weapons.
• Morality Chain: The Hero Club is essentially this to Sonoko, as revealed in Great Blooming Chapter. While Sonoko's far from being heartless or cruel, she'd grown rather disillusioned and ruthless after suffering so much during Washio Sumi Chapter and her enshrinement period before the first season of the anime. She even privately admits in Great Blooming Chapter that she almost hoped for the world to be destroyed in the final battles of both seasons and in the scene before that, proposes to her friends that they perform a coup on the Taisha so they can it take over because she outright hates the current organization despite acknowledging their intentions and multiple shortcomings, but her attachment to the Hero Club keeps her from going to extremes she would probably regret in the near future.
• Next Tier Power-Up: In episode 3, Karin explains that by gaining enough battle experience, Heroes can attain a higher power. It is called "Mankai". In episode 5, Yuna, Togo, Fu and Itsuki activate Mankai. Karin activates Mankai in episode 11.
• Nice Girl: Only girls with strong moral character can be accepted as Heroes, and therefore everyone in the Hero Club is naturally a good person. It's implied that this was the reason why Karin was chosen to receive a Hero terminal over Mebuki, as while Mebuki had slightly better grades Karin was always helping out her fellow candidates (even if she tried to downplay it).
• Physical God: The Taisha worship the Heroes as these, since they consider giving your body parts to the Shinju to become closer to it.
• Power at a Price: Mankai is revealed to require a sacrifice of a seemingly-random bodily function to activate. These sacrifices are permanent, and the more the Hero Club fights the more of themselves they sacrifice.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Everyone loves eating udon.
• Transformation Trinket: The girls' smartphones serve this purpose, by means of a special app. Fu had Yuna, Togo and Itsuki download it when they joined the club.
• Wake Up, Go to School & Save the World: While the Taisha actually excuses them when they disappear from class to go fight giant monsters, Itsuki's loss of voice affected her studies and social life pretty badly.

An ordinary, cheerful second-year middle school student and a member of the Hero Club. Energetic and brave to a fault, she loves helping others (especially her best friend Togo) more than anything, although her disregard for herself can sometimes do more harm than good. Her main hobbies include eating snacks and being around her friends in the Hero Club. Her other hobby is creating pressed flowers, learned from her mother.

In her Hero Form, she wields armored gauntlets and greaves. Her fairy is Gyuuki, a pink and white cow spirit who's always hungry.

• All-Loving Hero: She cares deeply about her friends, especially Togo. Even after Togo tries to destroy the world she holds no grudges against her and still sees her as a friend.
• Alliterative Name: Her given name and surname begin with 'Yu'. Doubles as a Repetitive Name.
• All Your Powers Combined: Her final Daimankai transformation, which combines the power of the Hero Club (and Gin), the wishes of all of humanity as well as the Shinju's own Mankai.
• Bad Liar: Togo instantly realizes that Yuna is hiding something during their party in Episode 6, namely that she hasn't been able to taste any of the snacks they've been eating. Togo exploits this mercilessly during the April Fools Day event in the Vita game, in which she and the rest of the Hero Club trick Yuna into thinking that Togo is transferring schools, causing Yuna to break down in tears. When the ruse is revealed, Yuna tries to save face and claim that she was only pretending to cry (while audibly sniffling), only for Togo to claim that Yuna didn't care that she might have had to transfer schools, causing Yuna to panic even more.
• Badass Longcoat: Her Hero Form gives her a pink and white one.
• Big Damn Heroes: When she blocks the Leo Starcluster's attack in Episode 11 after Fu, Itsuki and Karin are all incapacitated.
• Big Eater: Not quite on the same level as Fu, but she loves her snacks and udon. Then she loses her sense of taste.
• Book Dumb: Yuna isn't exactly the greatest student. When Karin tells her that people probably call her stupid a lot, she cheerfully agrees. She's also the only one who falls for Togo's disguise as Kokubo Kamen.
• Calling Your Attacks: Yuna loves to do this in the heat of battle.

• Break the Cutie: Hero Chapter seems devoted to breaking her, first by the heavenly gods cursing her due to her rescuing Togo, which is causing her body to break down similarly to a cancer patient's, and then by causing her friends to get hurt and for Fu to be hit by a car because she tried to tell them, and finally by causing her to argue with and yell at her friends because she can't tell them what's happening to her. By the end of it all, she's so broken that she agrees to sacrifice herself to the Shinju to save the world because she's going to die no matter what. She gets better at the end, though.
• Cherry Blossom Girl: She has red hair that turns pink when she transforms, her birthday is March 21 (the first day of spring), and her Flower Motif (in the opening credits and the shape of her Mankai Form) is the Yoshino cherry.
• Childhood Friend: She first met Togo when Togo's family just moved to her town and took her on a tour of the town. They have been inseparable since.
• Close-Range Combatant: Yuuna fights using armored gauntlets for powerful close-range combat.
• Cooldown Hug: On Togo to assure her everything's alright after fiercely battling against her.
• Curtains Match the Window: In her Hero form, her hair and eyes are pink.
• Cute Bruiser: She has the most physical fighting style of the Heroes, and also throws herself at any opportunity to help others while being adorable in either case. According to the Visual Novel, her father taught her martial arts. In a scenario from the third Visual Novel, after only a weekend of training from Karin the two of them are able to trash a (male) kendo hall from out of town. Yuna's training in martial arts apparently makes her a natural at swordfighting, too.
• Declaration of Protection: Make one toward Togo in Episode 11, which is notable since she makes it right as she's about to fight her.
• Diving Kick: Her second fairy, Kasha, grants her a very Kamen Rider-esque flaming kick.
• Doom Magnet: After rescuing Togo, she is cursed by the heavenly gods as retribution. If she tries to tell anybody about it, then whoever she tries to tell will be plagued by bad luck. It starts with small things like Itsuki losing her house keys and Sonoko burning her hand on a pot, but when Yuna tries to tell Fu directly she gets hit by a car and is hospitalized.
• Even the Girls Want Her: Yuna receives a love letter from another girl in the second Visual Novel. Neither Togo nor Karin are very pleased.
• Fairy Companion: Gyuki, a cow spirit. It has a big appetite, and it usually summons itself without Yuna's consent. Her second spirit, a fire-cat named Kasha, also appears on its own.
• Flower Motifs: Yuna's flower is the cherry blossom. Cherry blossoms were famously associated with kamikaze pilots in WWII, as a symbol of the beauty of the ephemeral and self-sacrifice. It's revealed in Episode 8 that the Heroes must sacrifice their bodies to the Shinju to protect their world, and Yuna is stated to have the highest hero aptitude of all of the girls.
• Genki Girl: She's a very energetic, upbeat girl.
• Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Towards Togo to stop her from destroying the Shinju.
• Head Pet: Gyuki spends a lot of time perched atop her head outside of combat.
• Heroes Fight Barehanded: Downplayed. While she does wield gauntlets, she's the only one in the Hero team who fights using her fists instead of a weapon.
• Heroic BSoD: Has a brief one in Episode 11 when she realizes that stopping the Vertex means fighting Togo, and she's unable to transform due to a crisis of faith. She gets better just in time to block the Leo Vertex's attack at the end of the episode.
• Heroic RRoD: She goes into a comatose state after using so much power to defeat the Vertex cluster in Episode 12. She gets better, although it turns out to have unexpected ramifications in Hero Chapter.
• Heroic Self-Deprecation: Doesn't seem to think very highly of herself, as seen in the second Visual Novel when she receives an anonymous love letter.
  Yuna: "I'm not as beautiful as Sonoko or Togo or as cute as Itsuki, as cool as Karin or as mature as Fu."
• Heroic Willpower: Togo believes that this is how Yuna wakes up from her coma in Episode 12, rather than with the Shinju's help.
• Hot-Blooded: She can heroically yell with the best of them in the heat of battle. Episode 12 features her screaming herself into a Mankai from her human form through pure hot-bloodedness.
• Image Song: Besides Circle Triangle Square, her duet with Karin, she has the unsurprisingly energetic Hello Girls.
• Innocently Insensitive: While she's normally perceptive of the mood around her when it calls for it, she completely fails to read the atmosphere around Fu and Karin after they lost to Sonoko in a race the day before in Hanayui no Kirameki, continuing to cheerfully bring up how awesome Sonoko was when she won that race...right in front of Fu and Karin's faces. Whoops.
• Invisible Parents: She has parents but they're never shown. In the Visual Novel it's stated that her father is a black-belt who taught her martial arts, while her mother taught her flower-pressing, so she seems to have a good relationship with them.
• Married to a God: In Episode 5 of Hero Chapter, the Taisha ask her to perform a special ritual called the Shinkon in order to restore some of the Shinju's power, a ritual which involves Yuna becoming the Shinju's "bride". This unfortunately requires her to sacrifice her life, as the Shinju would devour her spirit. Thankfully, with the support of the Hero Club and all the past heroes, Togo was able to stop the Shinkon just mere seconds away from Yuna being fully consumed.
• Meaningful Name: Yu can mean "friend," and Yuki can mean "courage."
• Nice Girl: Very caring and helpful.
• No Sense of Personal Space: Episode 10 reveals that she was touchy-feely with Togo from the first day they met. In the Visual Novel Togo says that although she was uncomfortable with it at first, she eventually came to enjoy it.
• Obfuscating Stupidity: She's actually pretty perceptive and great at reading people, but she intentionally dumbs herself down in order to ease the mood. She's also not above telling little white lies for her friends' sake, such as in Episode 1 when she tells Togo that everything's going to be okay while her hand is visibly shaking. She really is oblivious to Togo's romantic feelings for her, though.
• Oblivious to Love: The Visual Novel included with the first BD volume heavily implies during several scenes (especially the play scenario) that Togo has romantic feelings for her, while she writes it off as Togo really getting into her acting. She does tend to get very flirty in the Vita game though, showing that it isn't necessarily one-sided on Togo's part; during one scene she even tells Togo that they must have been connected by a Red String of Fate ever since they were born.
• Physical God: Episode 4 of Hero Chapter reveals that the bodily functions that the girls had sacrificed were not given back, but were replaced; Yuna's self-Mankai had sacrificed her entire body, and so her body was replaced with a divinely constructed body. This was the reason why she was able to take on Togo's curse in the first place.
• Pink Heroine: As a Hero, she gets pink hair, pink eyes, and a pink magical girl outfit. She's also the leading heroine of the series.
• Plucky Girl: Even after learning the shocking truth of the Hero System, she declares that she would've become a Hero anyway. However, in episode 11, she breaks down in tears when she couldn't transform and thought that she was a failure of a friend. She recovers after seeing Karin's performance.
• The Pollyanna: Even learning the Awful Truth about the Hero System, she declares that she would've become a Hero anyway.
• Power Dyes Your Hair: Along with Power Makes Your Hair Grow. She goes from having short, red hair with a small ponytail in her human form to having a huge, pink ponytail in her Hero form.
• Power Fist: Her Hero Form gives her enhanced gauntlets. Activating Mankai grants her a giant pair of mechanized gauntlets, first showcased in Episode 5.
• Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Along with Power Dyes Your Hair. Her Hero form turns her short red ponytail into a long pink one. Her final transformation gives her long, flowing hair that almost reaches the ground.
• Stepford Smiler: She is already prone to hiding her fears or misgivings, such as when she hides her fear when entering the Jukai for the first time to stay strong for Togo. In Hero Chapter, she managed to hide her curse and her painful deterioration under her usual cheerful facade for months until it became too obvious for Yuna to hide anymore. This was also enforced on Yuna by the memetic nature of the curse, as anybody she would try to tell would be cursed by misfortune and potentially end up receiving the curse themselves.
• Stock Shōnen Hero: A Rare Female Example. She's a Hot-Blooded middle schooler Magical Girl Warrior. Yuna isn't very motivated in school and is Book Dumb (though she is very good at perceiving others emotions, though she downplays that), has Big Eater traits (but not on the league of Cool Big Sis Fu), has a very strong sense of friendship, uses her fists during combat, and is a Plucky Girl who enjoys being a Hero even after learning the truth behind it. She is oblivious to the fact her best friend Togo likes her (and it's implied Karin does too).
• Tarot Motifs: During the Visual Novel, Itsuki draws the Strength card (which depicts a Lion and a Woman) when she does Yuna's reading. She then explains that the Strength is not represented by the Lion, but by the Woman taming it with gentleness. Yuna defeats the Leo Vertex in Episode 12 by simply touching it with her finger in her human form.
• Tomboy and Girly Girl: Appears to be the Tomboy to Togo's Girly Girl on the surface. However, Yuna is very knowledgeable about flowers and her room is filled with pink and stuffed animals, while Togo is a history buff and battleship otaku.
• Your Days Are Numbered: Yuna's curse in Hero Chapter is slowly killing her, and the Taisha have told her that she probably won't make it to spring. She actually does manage to live until spring through sheer willpower, but she is clearly on the verge of death in the finale.

Mimori Togo/Sumi Washio

Yuna's best friend, classmate and fellow club member. She has been wheelchair-bound since a traffic accident two years ago which paralyzed her from the waist-down and took some of her memories. Despite this, she's great with computers and a genius at baking sweets, and can even swim. Although mature and intelligent, she has a tendency to think that she knows a little bit more than she really does.

In her Hero Form, she wields a variety guns and sniper rifles for long-range combat, while her ribbons serve as appendages for moving around. Her fairies are Aobouzu, an blue egg spirit, Gyoubudanuki, a robed tanuki spirit, and Shiranui, a blue flame spirit.

She's the main character of the prequel novel Washio Sumi is a Hero, where she becomes a Hero as a sixth-grader and is adopted by the Washio family, taking the name Sumi Washio. She fought alongside Sonoko Nogi and Gin Minowa, another fellow hero who fell in battle. She lost some of her memories and use of her legs after using Mankai twice, and was eventually returned to her original family, where she retook her real name.

• Adoptive Name Change: In the past, she was adopted by the influential Washio family, giving her the name Sumi Washio. After she was returned to her original family, she retook her birth name.
• Affectionate Nickname: During her time as Sumi, she called Sonoko "Sonocchi". She continues to use it when she gets her memories of their friendship back.
• Ambiguously Lesbian: The VN, the episode 10 flashback when she first met Yuna, and some scenes in episode 12 imply that her feelings for Yuna are more than platonic. Later, Togo's VA claimed in a tweet that "she overflows with love beyond friendship for Yuna," surprising roughly zero people. The character booklet that came with one of the BD volumes also confirmed this and thereby removing the "ambiguously" from the title.
• Anti-Villain: Decides to destroy the world in episode 10 to save her friends from what she views as a Fate Worse than Death. Luckily Yuna manages to snap her out of it.
• The Atoner: In the second VN, Togo becomes the masked vigilante Kokubo Kamen to atone for trying to destroy the Shinju. Much more seriously though Togo gives herself up as a Human Sacrifice during Yuki Yuna is a Hero: Hero Chapter in order to repair the damage that she did to the Wall at the end of the first season.
• Attack Drones: She gains the ability to summon a few of them from her fourth fairy, Kawabotaru. According to the artbook that came with the third BD volume, they are even called "funnels".
• Beam Spam: Activating Mankai gives her access to this, first seen in episode 5.
• Because You Were Nice to Me: After she moved into an unfamiliar house in a wheelchair without any memories of the past two years, Yuna immediately offered her her unconditional friendship. She has been devoted to Yuna ever since.
• Berserker Tears: When the Virgo Vertex attacks during Gin's funeral in Washio Sumi Chapter.
• Blue Means Smart One: When she transforms, Mimori gets a blue magical girl outfit and she is the smartest of the Hero Club. She runs their website and has a lot of computer knowledge.
• Break the Cutie: Episode 8's revelation on the truth about the Hero System was already hard on her, but The Reveal of the world outside the Shinju's barrier sends her across the Despair Event Horizon.
• Cheshire Cat Grin: She gives quite a creepy one in Episode 7 just before the girls turn out the lights to go to bed. Turns out she was relishing the fact that she had a captive audience for a Ghost Story.
• Childhood Friends: She first met Yuna when her family just moved to Yuna's town. Yuna took her on a tour of the town, and they have been inseparable since.
  • This was set up by the Taisha; Yuna had the highest hero aptitude out of everyone, and so the Taisha figured that being friends with a former Hero would increase their efficiency when they were chosen to fight. Not that either Yuna or her complain.
  • She was equally inseparable from Sonoko but due to the Mankai, she does not remember her.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: Towards Yuna. When Yuna received a love letter in the second VN, she reacted in extreme panic and had...thoughts about what to do with whoever sent it. And as Hanayui no Kirameki shows, even her younger self is competition for her. Oddly enough though, despite also holding an equal amount of affection towards Yuna herself, she's okay with Karin.
• Cloudcuckoolander: Has a few elements of this. There's her tendency to drift off into patriotic rants during unrelated topics, and her advice to Itsuki for getting over her performance anxiety was "Imagine that everyone else is a pumpkin."
• Cold Sniper: When fighting the Vertex, she is calm and composed. Plus, she seems to use the sniper rifle as her default gun.
• Cute Bruiser: Despite being the team's long-range specialist, supplementary material shows that she's actually physically stronger than Yuna and Karin; her Hero training in Washio Sumi did involve lots of physical training, after all. Artwork released after the anime aired (and she gains use of her legs back) reveals that she has defined abs.
• Deuteragonist: She is together with Yuna at the forefront of the story of the Divine Era.
• Disappeared Dad: Only her mother was shown visiting her after her accident, and her father is absent during a scene showing silhouettes of all of the girls' parents, and so it's safe to assume that her father is either dead or otherwise gone. Averted with her foster father during her time as Sumi Washio however.
• Easily Forgiven: Despite starting a Vertex outbreak and attempts to destroy the world to spare her friends' suffering, her friends held no grudges against her for her actions and still see her as a friend at the end. Even the Taisha don't punish her in any way.
• Energy Bow: As Sumi Washio, this was her weapon until Gin's death. Afterward, she adopted a sniper rifle which she named in memory of Gin.
• Expy: Heavily resembles a middle school-aged Mayo Misasagi from the Type-Moon light novel series, Fire Girl. Makes sense considering they were both designed by BUNBUN.
• Fairy Companion: Three of them: Gyobudanuki, Aobozu and Shiranui; a racoon, an egg, and an ice-spirit respectively. However, she's mostly associated with Aobouzu. She gets a new atom spirit named Kawabotaru in Episode 8.
• Fatal Flaw: She's a pessimist and tends to go off on her own whenever she hears bad news, such as in Episode 2 when she angrily wheels herself out of the club room because Fu withheld the Hero Club's true purpose from everyone. This has disastrous consequences when she learns the truth of the world beyond the Shinju's barrier.
• Feminine Women Can Cook: She's the most feminine of the cast and is great at cooking (or at least making sweets).
• Forgot the Call: Due to activating her Mankai during the climactic battle of Washio Sumi is a Hero Togo promptly forgot about her time as Washio Sumi, including her tenure as a hero as well as the friends she made during that time. Thankfully Togo regains her memories at the end of the first season after the Shinju returns everyone's sacrifices.
• Formal Characters Use Keigo: She always speaks very politely. It's a hint that she lived as an Ojou when she was an adopted daughter of the Washio family.
• Genius Cripple: She's wheelchair-bound, yet she's The Smart Girl with great computer knowledge.
• Guns Akimbo: She is capable of dual wielding pistols... in reverse grip.
• The Gunslinger: Her Hero Form gives her a variety of guns.
• Handicapped Badass: She is confined to a wheelchair in her normal form, and her legs are still useless when she transforms. This does nothing to stop her from utterly destroying one of the Vertex in episode 2, and she has a high kill count in the series. As of Episode 12 the "handicapped" part no longer applies but the "badass" one still does.
• Happily Adopted: Despite not being related to them by blood, it was clear that her relationship with the Washios during her time as Sumi was a very loving one. Her foster parents are shown to treat her as a real daughter (as they couldn't have children themselves) and Sumi returns the favor.
• Hime Cut: She has M-shaped straight bangs, chin length sidelocks, and waist length straight hair. Her hairstyle highlights her Yamato Nadeshiko traits.
• Human Sacrifice: It's revealed during Yuki Yuna is a Hero: Hero Chapter that in order to repair the damage that she did to Shinju-sama and prevent the world from being destroyed by fire Togo willingly gives herself up to God in order to atone for her mistakes. Fortunately Yuna is able to save Togo though not without some cost.
• I Call Her "Vera": The prequel light novel reveals she named her sniper rifle "Shirogane" in tribute to Gin (The kanji used, (銀) is the same one used in Gin's name)
• Image Song: Besides the patriotic anthem Kokon Musou, her song on the character CD is the intense A Clockwork's Memories.
• I'm Crying, but I Don't Know Why: Togo says this almost word-for-word during her fight with Yuna in Episode 12 as she talks about her previous tenure as a Hero under the name Sumi Washio, the memories of which were taken when she used Mankai back then.
• Important Hair Accessory: The ribbon she uses to tie her hair. It was given to her by Sonoko when they were heroes.
• Interrupted Suicide: She attempts suicide several times in Episodes 9 and 10, although only to test the fairie's powers. It turns out that the fairies won't let Heroes die, even if they want to.
• Jerkass Realization: In Washio Sumi, after her third battle she realizes that she had unfairly thought of herself as better than Gin and Sonoko before learning the reason Gin was late for everything and realizing that Sonoko had been chosen as the leader not because of her family's higher position in the Taisha, but due to her ability to think clearly in emergencies.
• Last-Name Basis: Prefers to be called by her last name, even by her best friend Yuna. Episode 10's Flashback of their first meeting reveals that this is because Yuna thought that "Togo-san" sounded really cool.
• Lipstick Lesbian: Very feminine, and has her heart dedicated to Yuna.
• Long-Range Fighter: She fights using a variety of ranged weapons from a long distance.
• Master of Threads: Her Hero form has four long ribbons which trail from her shoulders and serve as Spider Limbs to prop up Tougou's body as well as move her around.
• Mercy Kill: She sees destroying the Shinju as one to her friends, who would otherwise have to give up more and more of their bodies without even the release of death.
• Murder the Hypotenuse: Played for Laughs in the second visual novel, in which Togo does not take Yuna receiving a love letter well:
  "To insult pure Yuna-chan... they deserve death. Let's search for the sender and tortu- er, carry out an investigation."
• My God, What Have I Done?: After Yuna manages to calm her down from her rampage in season 1 Togo is horrified about what she has done and tries to rectify her mistake. This eventually leads her to willingly sacrifice herself to the Vertex in Hero Chapter as oppose to letting some innocent shrine maidens die for her mistake.
• Ojou: In the past, she was adopted by the upper-class Washio family.
• Paper-Thin Disguise: As Kokubo Kamen ^note National Defense Mask in the second Visual Novel. Togo, if you're going to disguise yourself as a masked superhero◊, you should try taking off that distinctive ribbon of yours first. Although hilariously enough the first episode of Yuki Yuna is a Hero: Hero Chapter shows that Yuna isn't able to tell the difference between the two until Togo takes of the mask right in front of her.
• Patriotic Fervor: She's passionate about Japanese history and is patriotic to the point where she won't eat Western food or use English loanwords. The first VN reveals that she even keeps a miniature Japanese flag with her wherever she goes. However, when the choice is between the state and her friends, she'll choose her friends without hesitation.
  • She was no less nationalist as Washio Sumi, either. Her "National Defense Calisthenics" is even capable of imparting this onto a class of first-graders (which gets her and her friends scolded for indoctrination)
    First-Grader Classroom: Enrich the country, strengthen the military!
• Power Dyes Your Hair: Downplayed, her hair only becomes a bit paler when she transforms. Early concept art had her hair turning blue in her Hero Form.
• Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Her hair grows incredibly long in her Hero Form, even when taking into account her ribbon being gone.
• Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: With having both black hair and the palest skin of all the club members, she really shows this look. This helps her in an event of Jukai no Kioku and the 4koma, when she tries to evoke the "Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl" look, as Fu can testify.
• Refusal of the Call: Togo initially refuses to transform because she doesn't think that she can fight with her disability. In Episode 2, though, she gets over her fear and transforms to protect Yuna. At least, that's what it seems like at first. But after her past as Sumi Washio was revealed, an interview claimed that the true reason why she couldn't bring herself to fight was because even though her mind didn't remember fighting the Vertex, her body and soul did. The fact that the Vertex she was fighting were the same ones that killed Gin likely didn't help.
• Ret-Gone: The first arc of Hero Chapter deals with the Hero Club learning that all memory of Togo has been completely erased from the entire world, including pictures taken of her. The second episode reveals though that Togo herself asked for this; since she knew that the others would search for her if she suddenly went missing she asked the Shinju-sama to erase all memory of her so that her friends wouldn't be hurt by her sacrifice.
• The Smart Girl: She's very knowledgeable about computers and manages the Hero Club's website. She's also an avid history buff, specifically Japanese history.
• Smart People Shoot: Her magical girl powers are sniper based which also plays to The Smart Girl angle as snipers generally have to be good at mathematics to calculate shots.
• Super Wheelchair: Her Mankai gives her an enormous flying battleship bristling with cannons to ride around on. She immediately puts it to good use, utterly obliterating the Pisces Vertex without even having to seal it.
  "It seems there's no need to seal such a weak enemy."
• Sweet Baker: She's very good at baking sweets and has a gentle personality.
• Waif Prophet: As Sumi, she had a prophetic vision when she touched the Shinju. Sonoko After states that Togo has the powers of both a Miko (who can hear the voice of the Shinju) and a Hero, and that such people are called "Messiah."
• Wistful Amnesia: Even after losing her memories, she just knows that her ribbon is extremely important to her. She also knows that she can trust Sonoko despite not being able to remember their friendship.
• Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: After discovering just how hopeless their situation is, and the extent to which they were tricked and manipulated by the Taisha and their own parents, she begins destroying the world's protective walls, hoping to let the hell-beasts outside destroy the Shinju and end everyone's suffering (via death).
• Yamato Nadeshiko: She's polite, gentle and strong-willed. She tries to embody traditional Japanese values so much that when she attempted suicide in episode 10, seppuku is the first method she tried. ^note  (The ritual suicide method practiced by women in the relevant era wasn't the same as that of men. They wouldn't cut open their stomach, but cut their wrists or their throat instead as that wouldn't necessitate baring their stomachs, which was seen as indecent in that era. However, the stomach opening method is more heavily associated with Seppuku than other methods of suiide.).

Fu Inubozaki

A feisty third-year in middle school and the president of the Hero Club who has a flair for the dramatic. She is Itsuki's older sister, as well as her legal guardian ever since their parents died in a Vertex attack two years ago. She was secretly assigned by the Taisha to form the Hero Club and was the one who gave her fellow members the transformation app used to fight the Vertexes. Despite her eccentricites she is a great leader to her club and a caring guardian to Itsuki, for better or worse.

Her Hero Form gives her a greatsword that can change in size according to her fighting spirit. Her fairy is Inugami, a blue and yellow dog spirit who has a loyal personality.

• Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Older sister variety towards her younger sister Itsuki.
• Berserker Tears: As she tries to take revenge on the Taisha for destroying Itsuki's dream, and while trying to fight through Karin and Yuna to get there.
• BFS: Her Hero Form gives her a large sword, and she can increase its size. Her Mankai form increases it size even further; the hilt itself is at least as big as she is.
  • In Hero Chapter she finally shows the potential of her Mankai, summoning a greatsword several hundred feet high.
• Big Eater: She can eat more than one sitting of udon. And food is sometimes the first thing on her mind.
• Big Sister Instinct: Towards Itsuki as she's her only living family member left and is nothing but doting to her since their parents died. She also has this towards the rest of the Hero Club members as well.
• Break the Cutie: By the middle of episode 9 she's already feeling incredibly guilty for persuading the other girls to join the Hero Club and the suffering they're going through because of it, plus trying to cope with her own loss of vision and the revelation that it's apparently permanent. The last straw is finding out about Itsuki's dream of becoming a singer, which is now apparently lost forever; at that point she finally snaps under the weight of it all.
• Character Catchphrase: Girl Power! It's her explanation for everything.
• Chuunibyou: Has a pretty big case of this. Unlike some other examples, though, she does know when to tone it down.
• Cool Big Sis: To Itsuki, and more figuratively toward the Hero Club as a whole.
• Even the Girls Want Her: The Vita game mentions that she's gotten love letters from a few girls, including a girl from the Cheerleading Club after she helped them out. She has no luck with the opposite sex, though.
• Expy: With her parents gone, she acts as a Cool Big Sis to the other girls. Her weapons are oversized and her uniform has a yellow flower theme. Sounds like Mami Tomoe from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, further proven when she breaks down so much after find so much about the Awful Truth. Unlike her counterpart, however, the Hero Club helps her out of it.
• Eyepatch of Power: A side effect of using her Mankai causes her to become blind in one eye. She then gets an eyepatch to cover it.
• Fairy Companion: Her partner is Inugami, a dog-like spirit. At the end of episode 7, she gains another partner. This time, a cute sickle-weasel named Kamaitachi.
• Flechette Storm: Her second fairy, Kamaitachi, allows her to throw knives at distance; she uses these in episode 8 to immobilize the second Gemini Vertex.
• Girly Bruiser: This heroine will crush her enemies with a BFS and Girl Power!
• Heroic BSoD: Is in one of these for a good part of Episode 11 after her breakdown in Episode 9. She snaps out of it when she sees Itsuki fiercely fighting to protect her.
• Image Song: Her song on the character CD is the rather silly My whole love for you.
• It's All My Fault: As the club leader, she always blames herself whenever bad things happen to the other girls, especially when they all start to suffer effects of the Sange, and never forgave herself for deceiving the other girls about the club's true purpose. This comes to a head in Episode 9, when Fu learns about Itsuki's dream and how it was ruined by her losing her voice, which results in her complete breakdown.
• Large Ham: Really gets into whatever she's doing, whether it's playing a hammy villain or fighting Vertex. "Girl Power" indeed.
• The Leader: Of the Hero Club, both as an afterschool club and in combat.
• Minor Living Alone: She is Itsuki's legal guardian and has been taking care of her like a parent ever since their parents were killed by the Vertex.
• Moment Killer: She notoriously told Togo and Yuna that they didn't actually have to kiss during the skit practice scene of the Visual Novel. In the Vita game her antics also interrupt their private, subtext-dripping cherry blossom viewing.
• Power Dyes Your Hair: From brown or dirty blonde to a very bright yellow.
• Promotion to Parent: She takes great care of her sister after the deaths of their parents.
• Rage Against the Heavens: Episode 9 revealed Itsuki's (now impossible to attain) dream to her, and she is less than pleased that she had been kept in the dark about Sange.
  • Hero Chapter shows that Fu never forgave the Taisha or the Shinju for the events of Season 1; whenever the Hero Club hears some particularly bad news, her first suggestion is often to go after the Taisha, and she has no qualms with using her Mankai to cleave through the Shinju's roots to make a path for Togo to reach Yuna.
• Revenge: Episode 4 reveals she only became a Hero to get back at the Vertex for killing her and Itsuki's parents.
• Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After learning what Itsuki's dream was (and about how it was impossible due to Itsuki's Sange), she attempts to destroy the Taisha for ruining it. It takes the combined efforts of Karin, Yuna and Itsuki to stop her.
• Sibling Yin-Yang: With Itsuki. Fu is outgoing and bold, the polar opposite of her shy and timid younger sister.
• So Proud of You: Towards Itsuki, whenever her little sister takes the initiative all by herself.
• Sore Loser: Hanayui no Kirameki reveals that she's this after she and Karin lost to Sonoko (who, mind you, had been bedridden for two years before she eventually recovered and joined the club) in a race during the athletic meet the Hero Club put together.
• Super-Strength: Her Mankai form appears to give her this; she's able to knock down the giant Leo Vertex just by ramming into it, without her BFS.
• Tears of Joy: When her sister starts speaking again.
• Terrible Artist: Her illustrations of the vertexes, her hero comrades and so on are really shoddy stick figure-style drawings.
• Underestimating Badassery: She and Karin both underestimated how amazing Sonoko can be when she actually puts her attention into something. This serves as her and Karin's biggest mistake during the race for an athletic meet the Hero Club put up together as they were so focused on outrunning each other, they failed to take into account Sonoko managing to zip past them.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With Karin. Have fun counting the number of times she butts heads with Karin as much as she looks after her as her junior.

Itsuki Inubozaki

A shy and soft-spoken first-year middle school student, and the youngest member of the Hero Club. She is Fu's younger sister and loves her dearly, but isn't afraid to give her some snark. Despite her timidity she is determined to stand on her own no matter what, and she cherishes a secret dream. Her hobby is fortune-telling using tarot cards, and her fortunes are said to be quite reliable.

In her Hero form, she wields a bangle which conjures magical vines to ensnare her enemies. Her fairy is Kodama, a playful tree spirit.

• A-Cup Angst: The Vita game reveals that she's self-conscious about her small stature, especially when compared to her bustier older sister or especially Togo.
• Alliterative Name: Itsuki Inubozaki.
• The Baby of the Bunch: She's officially the youngest member of the Hero Club and is treated by all its older members as a younger sister.
• Badass Adorable: She's the youngest member of the group and has the shyest personality, but she can hold her own in battle as well as any of the other Heroes.
  • Hanayui cements this as Itsuki single handedly hands Yuna Akamine one of the biggest and fastest cases of Villain Decay in modern fictional history.
• Berserk Button: The Taurus Vertex pushes Itsuki's with its preferred method of attack, motivating her to ensnare its bell and shut it up.
  "Sound is supposed to make people happy!"
• Big Sister Worship: She greatly adores Fu. Even when the big secret Fu was keeping was brought to light, she willingly followed her without protest. And to a certain extent, figuratively, she admires and looks up to the rest of her senpai in the Hero Club, particularly, Yuna.
• Catch a Falling Star: In Episode 5, she uses several layers of her Mankai vines to catch Yuna and Togo as their craft was burning from re-entry.
• Character Development: When she discovers her passion for singing, she resolves to become someone who can walk beside her older sister rather than someone who always cowers behind her. Even losing her voice only serves to make her more determined. This leads to Fu's So Proud of You moment at episode 11 when she sees how strong Itsuki has become.
  • This continues into Hero Chapter, where she's generally much more confident and independent than in Season 1. This is best illustrated when Fu gets hit by a car, and Itsuki is able to not only take care of herself (even getting over some of her own Lethal Chef qualities) but also helps to take care of Fu in the hospital.
• Chekhov's Gun: In the VN, Itsuki is described as so hopelessly messy that she can't even tidy up her computer's desktop. She even left her idol audition file on her desktop, which in Episode 9 allows Fu to find it, directly leading to her breakdown.
• Cooldown Hug:
  • Gives one to her big sister after Fu attempts to assault the Taisha headquarters for keeping them in the dark about Sange, especially since her little sister's voice was taken from her as a "sacrifice".
  • She also later gives one to Karin in Hero Chapter, as she breaks down from the realization that she said horrible things to Yuna when Yuna was in so much pain after their conversation in the docks on an earlier day.
• The Cutie: Shy and cute to a fault. As the youngest Hero Club member, everyone in the club dotes on her and looks after her all the same.
• Cute Mute: As a side-effect of using her Mankai, she loses her ability to speak.
• Deflector Shields: Her second fairy, Ungaikyou, grants her these in her Hero form.
• Dream-Crushing Handicap: She wants to be a singer, but loses her voice halfway through the series.
• Fairy Companion: Kodama, a cute grass spirit. She gets another plant spirit named Ungaikyou in Episode 8.
• Fortune Teller:
  • She is seen practicing with Tarot cards, and her fortunes are said to be mostly reliable.
  • The love charms that she gives out in the second visual novel also work surprisingly well for the other girls.
• Heroic BSoD: Played for laughs in Hanayui no Kirameki. After Natsume unintentionally proposes to Fu to be her wife ^note  Natsume's actually clueless over the implications of what she's saying however , Itsuki is left as a gibbering mess unable to comprehend what was going on at the time.
• Idol Singer: After overcoming her Performance Anxiety in Episode 4 she aspires to become one, but by the time her audition passed the preliminary stages she had already lost her voice to the Sange. She's shown to be undergoing training in the VNs after getting her voice back. The four-year time skip reveals that she's become a successful musician.
• Image Song: Inori no Uta (Song of Prayer). It's the song that she records and sends to an idol audition agency, which passes the initial screening. The 2016 Character CD also gives her the cute idol-like Colorful World.
• Improbable Weapon User: While the other Heroes get rather conventional weapons such as guns or swords, Itsuki's weapon is a large bangle decorated with flowers, from which she can shoot magical vines. Given her dream of being a singer, it may be based on a tambourine.
• The Leader: She is elected president of the Hero Club after Fu graduates in the epilogue.
• Lethal Chef: Whenever she cooks, expect the results to be...less than savory. Yuna and Togo's default response to her cooking would be to beat a hasty retreat whenever possible. Itsuki's cooking is so bad that it affects her friends' own dishes if they cook with her, as with the case with Karin and the udon they made together for a contest in Jukai no Kioku, and with the horrifying pudding she and Yuna made together in a scenario in the Yuki Yuna chapters from Hanayui no Kirameki.
  • In Hanayui no Kirameki, if she's the one who cooks an udon pack then the standard result is a purple, gloopy mess (although this is only visual and has no effect on experience gained). Her "great" result is just everyone else's standard udon.
  • This starts to go away from Hero Chapter onwards, where her cake and curry fall into Tastes Better Than It Looks instead.
• Little Miss Snarker: Once she begins communicating with her notebook, she can get surprisingly sarcastic. It helps that her big sister is a Large Ham and thus an easy target.
• My Sister Is Off-Limits: She's very uncomfortable with the idea of her sister hooking up with anyone since she's afraid she'll be left alone if Fu does end up in a relationship.
• Nice Girl: Itsuki is a kind and polite girl.
• Performance Anxiety: She has a good singing voice. It's just that she has difficulties singing in front of people, as shown in episode 4. After some practice and encouragement from her sister and the rest of the Hero Club, she seems to have gotten over it.
• Plucky Girl: Despite losing her voice. she seems to take things in stride. Fu, on the other hand...
• Power Dyes Your Hair: Her hair gets a greenish tone when she is in her Hero form.
• Razor Floss: Her main method of attack in her Hero From. She uses them to great effect against one of the Vertex in episode 2. In episode 5, activating Mankai vastly increases the number of wires at her disposal, allowing her to stop a Vertex that almost reached the Shinju. She also uses them to save Yuna and Togo from certain death.
• Shrinking Violet: She happens to incredibly shy towards people. However, she grows out of it after Character Development, especially after losing her voice.
• Sibling Yin-Yang: With Fu. Itsuki is shy and timid, in contrast to Fu's outgoing and bold personality.
• Took a Level in Badass: After some pep talk from Sonoko in Chapter 18 of Hanayui no Kirameki, Itsuki took leaps and bounds to improve herself by taking cues and getting tutelage from the other Heroes' fighting styles, adjusting her own to adapt to theirs. This helps her stand her own ground against Yuna Akamine later on when Akamine decided that Itsuki was easy pickings for her to take on solo as she was the physically weakest member of the Hero Club. This is also reflected in Hero Chapter where Itsuki is shown to be more pragmatic when it comes to using her wires against Vertex.
• Tragic Dream: She can no longer be an idol singer after unwittingly losing her voice from using Mankai. Subverted at the end, when the side-effects wore off.
• Vine Tentacles: She uses vines to attack her enemies in her Hero form.
• Weak, but Skilled: Physically, Itsuki is much weaker in firepower compared to her friends and is notches lower than them when it comes to combat ability. To compensate for this, she utilizes her weapon in creative and pragmatic ways thanks to its versatility and flexible nature. She puts it to good use against Yuna Akamine in Chapter 18 of Hanayui no Kirameki and manages to win by herself without any help from anyone.
• What the Hell, Hero?: Delivers a convincing one to Sonoko when she suggests that they overthrow the Taisha in a coup in the chaos after the final battle.
• Yuri Fangirl:
  • She may be becoming one under Sonoko's influence; she found one of her novels in the second Visual Novel and "found it really exciting."
  • During the Kamen Blossom event in the Vita game, Itsuki suggested that the story be a romance between Kamen Blossom and the heroine... both of whom are girls.

Karin Miyoshi

A stubborn and uptight second-year middle school student who transfers to Yuna's class and joins the Hero Club to supervise the other Heroes under orders from the Taisha. Although she was not originally selected to be a Hero, her determination led to the Taisha selecting her anyway. She's a health nut who can often be found training. Unlike the rest of the Hero Club, she has little tolerance for whimsy.

In her Hero Form, she wields a pair of katana which she can generate endless copies of. Her fairy is Yoshiteru, a red shogun spirit that can talk but has a pessimistic personality.

• The Ace: The most trained, most efficient, and most powerful of the girls. She singlehandedly crushed the fifth Vertex in no time at all. However, Togo and Sonoko trump her in both experience and power thanks to their previous tenure as Heroes before the main series, so her status as the group's ace is up in the air.
• Always Someone Better: Her brother, a genius who eventually gained a high status. This caused her to be a mild example of The Unfavorite and her original reason for becoming a Hero was to finally get out of his shadow.
• An Arm and a Leg: After episode 11's four consecutive Mankai activations, Karin lost faculty of her right arm and her leg after the first two.
• Big Sister Instinct: When Fu's not the one doing the doting on Itsuki, it's Karin, acting as a sort of mentor figure towards the younger girl and encouraging her just as much as her actual older sister does.
• Butt-Monkey: Poor Karin. Despite being pegged as The Ace, a lot of things tend to comically not go her way. Then there's Gyuki constantly taking a bite out of her Fairy, Yoshiteru.
• Character Catchphrase: Her fairy, Yoshiteru, has a habit of saying "Shogyou mujou" (All things must pass), usually for comedic effect. It takes on a much sadder tone when he says it before Karin's awesome fight in Episode 11.
• Curb-Stomp Battle: She first appears in episode 3 by demolishing the fifth Vertex. Delivers one to five Vertexes in Episode 11, although at great personal cost.
• Deadpan Snarker: Snarks at nearly everyone at the Hero Club except towards Itsuki.
• Dual Wielding: She dual-wields twin katana.
• Expy: To Kyoko Sakura from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. As the last of the main girls to come in, she appears with awesome skill and red clothing. After interrupting their battle, she tends to mock the girls for their naivety. Overtime, however, she starts opening up to the other girls to the point she can no longer live without them.
• Fairy Companion: Her fairy is Yoshiteru, a shogun in red armor and the only fairy able to speak (albeit only a few lines).
• Girlish Pigtails: Her twintails go hand in hand with her Tsundere character.
• Glass Cannon: Karin's Mankai. It's powerful enough to kill Vertex in a single hit, core and all, but it takes only a single hit for it to dissipate, forcing Karin to activate it again and again.
• Heroic Sacrifice: Fully knowing its consequences, Karin went Mankai four times in episode 11 to hold off the Vertex army.
• I Just Want to Be Special: One of Karin's scenarios in the Visual Novel has her confiding to Yuna that she had relentlessly trained every day for years just to be chosen as a Hero. It helps to explain her initial anger toward the Hero Club's carefree nature.
  "I ran until I bled."
• Image Song: Her song on the character song CD is the fierce !ERROR!, which might not sound out of place in Symphogear.
• Inferiority Superiority Complex: From her years of training to become a Hero and be acknowledged, to her guilt stemming from being the only Hero not to use Mankai in Episode 5 and thus not suffer any disabilities, it's implied that she's hiding a severe inferiority complex behind all that bravado.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's a pretty prickly and standoffish person, but underneath all that is a kind girl who knows how to look out for others when there need be. Yuna and the rest of the Hero Club helped her bring out her nicer side more the longer Karin interacts with them.
• Katanas Are Just Better: Her Hero Form gives her a pair of katanas. Her Mankai form in Episode 11 grants her four katana-wielding arms in addition to her standard two, and gives her access to a Sword Beam.
• Legacy Character: She's using Gin's old terminal, hence their similar color schemes. According to the VN she even tried to use her axes for a while before switching to the katanas she's more proficient with. Episode 11, which has Karin's awesome fight, is even titled "Passion." This is a direct reference to Gin, who was called the "flower of Passion" to Sumi's "flower of Prim" and Sonoko's "flower of Elegance."
• Lethal Chef: Together with Itsuki, according to the Vita game. When they try and cook udon for a school-wide contest, they create... something... that manages to knock the judge out. However,Hanayui no Kirameki reveals that she's a decent chef on her own (or has at least improved really well), it's just that since she cooked together with Itsuki for that contest, their dish ended up inevitably bad.
• Minor Living Alone: According to the visual novel she has a brother that works at Taisha and her parents are alive, yet she lives completely alone after transferring to Sanshu Middle School.
• My God, What Have I Done?: When Karin tries to get Yuna to confess what's wrong with her and Yuna refuses, Karin lashes out at her, accusing Yuna of not trusting her even after she herself had worked so hard to open herself up to others. But when the Hero Club reads Yuna's diary and learn not only about Yuna's curse and her very good reason for keeping it a secret (that it would spread to anyone she talked about it with), but also about how much pain she had been in both from her body essentially falling apart and having to keep secrets from her friends, Karin breaks down sobbing over how she had said such awful things to her when she was going through so much.
• New Transfer Student: Transfers into Yuna's class in episode 3.
• Nice Girl: Even during the Hero selection process before her Character Development, she was still constantly helping out her fellow candidates (as much as she tried to deny it). It's heavily implied that this is the reason why she was chosen as a Hero over Mebuki, who had slightly better grades.
• Not So Above It All: In Episode 7 she derides the Hero Club for enjoying such a childish game as Smashing Watermelons... and then immediately starts shouting for Itsuki to swing right where she's at.
  • Also in Episode 7, she's incredibly fascinated in hearing Fu's love story and is surprised that nobody else seems interested... to which Itsuki replies that she had told them all ten times.
• One-Man Army:
  • She single handed kill the Vertex all by herself in episode 03.
  • She does it again to the extreme in episode 11 where she used Mankai to wipe out thousand of Stardust and kill 5 Vertexes, although with a greater cost.
• Power Dyes Your Hair: Downplayed, her hair just becomes a bit darker in her Hero form.
• Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Her twintails go from shoulder-lenght to elbow-lenght, but unlike Yuna and Togo, this only happens when she uses Mankai.
• Redemption Earns Life: Rejecting the Taisha's conspiracies and embracing the Hero club saves her from both a gory death at the hands of the divine gods, spending eternity as a piece of wheat, or living in exile running from the angry masses like the few Taisha remnants who didn't end up as wheat.
• Red Is Heroic: Her Hero Form has a red color theme.
• The Rival: She's Mebuki's bitter rival during the Hero Selection process. This softens to a Friendly Rivalry when they reunite in YuYuYui as well as in Willows are Green, Flowers are Red.
• Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: She's been trained by the Taisha for two years to be a Hero, and as a result she thinks of herself as a tool more than a human. The Hero Club fixes that.
• Smug Super: At first; she greatly believes in her capabilities as a Hero and is completely baffled at the Taisha's current choice of Heroes.
• Sore Loser: A trait she shares with Fu as revealed in Hanayui no Kirameki after they both lose to Sonoko in a race. Given that her best skill is speed and that she's aggressively competitive by nature, losing to Sonoko hurt her pride a lot.
• Throwing Your Sword Always Works: A common tactic of hers when she doesn't straight-up cut an enemy to ribbons. She can throw thousands of them in her Mankai form.
• Trademark Favorite Food: She likes udon, as well as anything that promotes good health. Like dried sardines, earning her the nickname Nibosshi (the food's name in Japanese).
• Tsundere: Towards the Hero Club members, especially Yuna. She mostly grows out of it by the end of the series as part of her Character Development, although she still can't help getting flustered around Yuna every so often.
• Underestimating Badassery: Her and Fu's biggest mistake during the race in an event in Hanayui no Kirameki was to dismiss Sonoko as small fry. They only realize their error once Sonoko zips past them to the finish line without breaking much of a sweat.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With Fu. They bicker a lot and tend to be overly competitive towards each other in athletic contests but they do care for each other a lot.
• Worthy Opponent: Mebuki saw her as one during their Hero selection process training days, being the only candidate Mebuki grudgingly acknowledges as an equal while their fellow candidates barely qualified as a blip under Mebuki's radar.

A heavily-bandaged girl whom Togo and Yuna meet in Episode 8, who claims to be a former Hero. She cannot use most of her body and is confined to a hospital bed, but the Taisha revere her as a living god.

She is also one of the main characters in the prequel light novel Washio Sumi is a Hero, and is the classmate and teammate of Sumi and Gin. She's a sleepy, easygoing girl who prefers to let life happen to her rather than the other way around. However, her ditzy demeanor hides a shocking intellect, and nothing about her should be underestimated. In her Hero form, she wields a multi-pronged spear.

As of Sonoko After, she is the newest member of the Hero Club.

• The Ace: She may not look the part, but she excels in anything she actually puts her mind into whenever she wants to. Just ask Togo, Fu, and Karin. She's also incredibly wealthy, intelligent, peerless in academics, influential, a tactical genius, and belongs to a prestigious family. Must be a family thing since her ancestor was also The Ace during her prime.
• Achilles in His Tent: A rare heroic portrayal. In a bonus chapter of the Washio Sumi light novel (and voiced in a bonus scenario of Hanayui no Kirameki), the Taisha beg Sonoko to transform in order to stop Fu's rampage and Togo's own suspicious movements. Sonoko, however, cheerfully refuses, telling them that she wanted to see what the Heroes would do now that they finally had the truth:
  Sonoko: "So... what do you want? You're telling me to transform and fight Wasshi and her friends...?"
  Taisha Priest: "That would be... your task as a Hero."
  Sonoko: "Bullshit."
• Affectionate Nickname: After previous attempts, she settled on calling Sumi "Wasshi" and Gin "Mino".
• Animal Motifs: Birds. Her Mankai manifests a bird-shaped Battle Aura at the peak of its power, her first fairy is a tengu, and she herself flourishes a battle aura shaped like bird wings in her Season 2 transformation sequence. It's noted that the Nogi had taken the tengu as their emblem due how their esteemed ancestor Wakaba Nogi had used the powers of a tengu in defense of Shikoku three hundred years ago.
• Battle Aura: Her Mankai can create one in the shape of a bird. In Hero Chapter she uses this to accelerate at ridiculously high speed.
• Beat Still, My Heart: Washio Sumi Chapter reveals that one of the many body parts she sacrificed to the Shinju after going Mankai twenty times was her heart.
• Beware the Nice Ones: Sonoko's a genuinely airheaded sweetheart, but she's capable of being a scary enemy to have whenever she's pushed to be one:
  • She's flighty and spacey alright, but her abilities (both power and intellect-wise) are nothing to scoff at, especially during the present day when she's a middle schooler. So when she's angry, she gets angry, and makes that very clear despite still having a smile on her face the whole time, which is why the Taisha cower at her presence after she gets her functions back in Hero Chapter.
  • Her enshrinement in the period between Washio Sumi Chapter and the first season of Yuki Yuna Is A Hero seems to have caused her to adopt a surprisingly ruthless side to herself. In the final episode of Great Blooming Chapter, she casually suggests that the Hero Club should perform a coup against the Taisha sometime after the final battle, explaining that they should take advantage of the current chaos to strike. While she changes her mind later after the Hero Club convinces her not to, she privately admits to herself that had they lost in the final battle or if Togo had succeeded in her plans in the first season, she wouldn't have minded if the world ended then and there due to her hatred of it in the same episode. When she officially takes over the Taisha sometime during the 4 year Time Skip, Karin implies that she eliminates any enemies that she gains in her rise to power.
• Big Ol' Eyebrows: Although it varies from time to time, she is now usually drawn with them.
• Break the Cutie: The events of the final battle in WaSuYu and its aftermath during the two year time skip before the beginning of the main series have her hit with this hard. Sonoko in Reminiscence shows that the hope of seeing Sumi again one day was the only thing that kept Sonoko from edging over into complete despair.
• Brought Down to Badass: Though she no longer has access to her twenty other Fairies in Hero Chapter and Hanayui no Kirameki, Sonoko is by no means weak and can still live up to her reputation as the strongest Hero in the series despite having been stripped of more than half of the power she got from those Fairies.
• Brutal Honesty: Towards her own ancestor in Wakaba's 4koma interview no less! After Wakaba begins rambling her story in gibberish, Sonoko bluntly tells her with a cheerful smile on her face that she sucks at storytelling.
  Sonoko: "You suck at explaining things~!"
• Bunny-Ears Lawyer: She may be a strange airhead who spaces out a lot, but she's a very skilled Hero with great tactical prowess and a heightened sense of attention to detail. There's also the fact that she's considered to be the strongest Hero so far considering her 21 Fairies and all.
• The Chessmaster: The plot of Jukai no Kioku involves Sonoko using the power of her twenty-one fairies to create a simulation of the Jukai, in order to test if the Heroes truly could hold back the infinite Vertex threat and what would happen if the barrier was to fail. This implies that the plot of Episodes 10-12, which involves Togo destroying parts of the barrier to let in the Vertex, was all part of Sonoko's plan.
• Childhood Friends: Of Togo's prior to her moving.
• Cloudcuckoolander: She's very spacey and enjoys daydreaming and generally staring off into the distance. This extends into her transformation sequences, which all feature images of her stuffed animals.
• Crazy-Prepared: A scenario in Hanayui no Kirameki reveals that she (the middle school version) rigged her desk with booby traps in case someone tries to snoop around and take her memo notebooks from her behind her back even though she brings it with her on herself all the time. She also uploads its contents online within the day for the same reason.
• Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: In Washio Sumi Chapter, this was Sumi's impression of her as she never realized until Sonoko's first job as team leader that Sonoko was both a skilled fighter and tactician in the battlefield underneath her airheadedness. This status still holds for her in the present day as besides those things mentioned about her, she can even beat Fu and Karin at the things they're best at as shown in Hanayui no Kirameki. Togo even goes so far as say that Sonoko has no weakness while Fu and Karin both agree that beating her at anything is impossible because she's a force of nature.
• Curb-Stomp Battle:
  • Hilarious example. In Hanayui no Kirameki Sonoko manages to easily beat Fu and Karin at the things they're best at. Sore at losing to her in the race during the Sports Event, Fu and Karin then challenge her to arm wrestling and a game of catching the other's back first respectively on the following day...only to lose to Sonoko in a quick flash before either of them realized it was already over. Fu and Karin then both give up in challenging her because they both admit that trying to outmatch her in anything is impossible.
  • On a more serious note, she also does quick work of the Vertexes Yuna Akamine sicced on her and the two defenseless mikos with her in Hanayui no Kirameki, surprising Hinata, Mito, and even Akamine herself.
• Curtains Match the Windows: Brown eyes and brown hair.
• Depending on the Artist: Sonoko's hair color varies a bit across the media she appears. In the light novels, she has dirty blonde hair in her human form and light brown hair as a Hero; in the 4koma and the Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru S Visual Novel, her hair is simply blonde; in Jukai no Kioku, she gets light brown hair; and in the anime, her hair was just plain brown, but it got retconned later to blonde in the BD release of the last episode, after her design for the second visual novel was revealed. This image summarizes the differences really well.
• Dream Weaver: One of her fairies allows her to do this, leading to the events of Jukai no Kioku.
• Even the Girls Want Her: Receives a love letter in very girly handwriting in the Light Novel.
• Fairy Companion: Twenty one of them.
  • In the Light Novel, she gets a crow tengu. The second visual novel reveals that its name is Kurama Tengu, and it can teleport and appear in dreams.
  • In the Vita game, she mentions that one of her fairies allows her to travel into dreams. Later material reveals that its name is Baku.
  • Another one of her fairies is Makura Gaeshi, a ghost with the power to... flip pillows.
  • In Hanayui no Kirameki, her younger version's initial fairy is Tesso, an elderly mouse spirit.
• Friendless Background: She never had any friends due to living a sheltered life. She's very elated when she became friends with Sumi and Gin and devastated when she loses both of them.
• The Gadfly: In Hanayui no Kirameki, she occasionally pulls harmless pranks on the other girls.
• Game Master: The Jukai seen in the Vita game is a dream world she created, and thus she's the one who's behind the Vertex attacks there.
• Generation Xerox: Like her ancestor Wakaba, she's an exceptionally powerful Hero who fights against the Vertex threat to protect their world. She also eventually becomes the new leader of the Taisha in the near future like Wakaba was together with Hinata.
• Genius Ditz: Although she acts spacey most of the time, she's able to formulate plans in seconds if the situation calls for it. Naturally, in the Light Novel she discerns the truth about Mankai almost immediately.
• Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Washio Sumi Chapter shows her often carrying around a stuffed cat pillow named Sancho.
• Godzilla Threshold: By the time of the anime, she has enough divine power to be worshiped as a demigod and plenty of reason to hate the Taisha, and so redeploying her is considered by the Taisha to be an emergency last resort in case any Heroes were to revolt against the Shinju.
  • This trope still applies to her in the first few chapters of Hanayui no Kirameki as the Shinju decided to reserve her as a trump card should the worst case scenario happen, at least until Chapter 13. Turns out, the Shinju had good reason for saving her until the last minute in the game.
• Gratuitous English: Not to the same degree as Gin, but in Washio Sumi Chapter she uses some from time to time.
  "Hey, Wasshi! Lets Enjoy KAGAWA LIFE"
• Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: While oftentimes mischievous, the blonde Sonoko's heart is always in the right place.
• Hero of Another Story: Before she became crippled, she was a Hero and fought battles alongside Mimori/Sumi.
• Heroic Lineage: She is a descendant of Wakaba Nogi, one of the first heroes.
• Hime Cut: Sonoko's family has a very high status in the Taisha. To represent this, she has blunt bangs, sidelocks, and waist length straight hair.
• Identical Granddaughter: She strongly resembles her ancestor, Wakaba Nogi, in appearance barring a few physical differences between them. Their resemblance was even more apparent in Sonoko's original character design in the light novels and in Jukai no Kioku, where she shared the same hair color as her ancestor.

• It Can't Be Helped: During her two year enshrinement, whenever the Taisha would deny Sonoko's request to see Sumi but oblige with her increasingly ludicrous requests, she tells herself this in an effort to use her spacey, carefree nature to cope. As stated under Madness Mantra below however, it's deconstructed as her frustration towards her position making her unable to to see her surving friend causes her to snap and acknowledge that telling herself to accept that "shit happens and there's nothing she can do about it" doesn't change how unfair and cruel her situation is.
• Jerkass Realization: Her parents have one regarding her in Washio Sumi after, frustrated with their daughter's spaciness, they prank her by pretending to collapse in front of her. After they see Sonoko tearfully and methodically calling the authorities and detailing their exact condition (including how many seconds they had been "unconscious"), it's stated that from then on they let Sonoko stare off into space as much as she wanted.
• Knight of Cerebus: A non-villainous example; her appearance in Episode 8 marks the point where the plot begins to get a lot darker.
• The Leader:
  • Was eventually assigned as the leader of her team, which Sumi originally thought was because of her family's high status in the Taisha. However, during their next battle Sumi realizes that it was because Sonoko was a tactical genius, and feels guilty about doubting her.
  • After the four-year Time Skip at the end of Great Blooming Chapter, Sonoko becomes the leader of the reformed Taisha.
• Lonely Rich Kid: Prior to meeting Sumi and Gin, she was this.
• Madness Mantra: Slips into one of these during an emotional low point in Sonoko in Reminescence:
  "It can't be helped. It can't be helped. It can't be helped. It can't be helped. It can't be helped. It can't be helped. Can't be helped. Can't be helped. Can't be helped (...) You can't... you can't just put up with everything by saying those words!"
• Ms. Exposition: In Season 1, her main role is to tell Yuna and Togo the truth about the Hero System. In Season 2, whenever she's not being the resident Cloudcuckoolander she's usually the one who provides valuable information about the world or what's going on.
• Nay-Theist: In her more serious moments, Sonoko often expresses disdain for both the heavenly gods and the Shinju, believing that she and her fellow humans are just pawns in their disputes. In Sonoko in Reminiscence, she asks a Taisha priest why the Shinju and the heavenly gods couldn't just settle their arguments themselves and leave the humans out of it.
• New Transfer Student: In Sonoko After, she transfers into Yuna's class at Sanshu Middle School.
• The Nicknamer: She loves creating nicknames for her friends. In addition to "Wasshi" and "Mino", in Sonoko After, she calls Yuna "Yu-yu", Itsuki "Ittsun" and Karin "Nibosshi". She tries calling Togo "Mimorin", but Togo tells her not to force herself and just keep calling her "Wasshi". She also calls Fu "Fuumin-senpai" in Hanayui no Kirameki.
  • In Washio Sumi Chapter, she also calls her Kurama Tengu fairy "Sebastian."
• O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Whenever Sonoko drops her trademark airheaded personality, expect things to take a more serious and dramatic turn afterwards.
• One-Woman Army: In her final battle in WaSuYu, she took out the invading Vertex on her own at the cost of going Mankai twenty times. In the light novel, she took out three. In the anime, she took out all twelve by herself.
• Physical God:
  • The Taisha worship her, since they believe that having given 20 parts of her body to the Shinju means that she's closer to it than being human. Since she was able to cause Yuna and Togo to end up at her shrine rather than the school rooftop, their belief may not be that unfounded.
  • In Jukai no Kioku she was able to create an entire dream world using her fairies, so she's definitely on an entirely different level than the other Heroes.
  • In Hero Chapter, it's revealed that Yuna had most of her body replaced with divine constructs after her forced Mankai in Season 1, and thus was essentially a human god. In the third VN Aki-sensei tells Sonoko that she wasn't very far off from Yuna in that regard.
• Power Dyes Your Hair: Downplayed. The Hero terminal Sonoko receives after it's been upgraded with the Mankai ability and fairies turns her hair from ash blonde to gold blonde. Interestingly, her hair permanently stays gold blonde even when she's not in Hero form, as shown in Hanayui no Kirameki when she's standing next to her grade school self.
• Purple Is Powerful: Her image color is purple and she's probably the most powerful hero in the series.
• Restored My Faith in Humanity: She admits that being around the Hero Club seems to have restored some of her lost faith and idealism in the world after her experiences in her enshrinement embittered her severely over it.
• Secret Weapon: The Taisha normally won't let her transform anymore, but they keep her around as a last resort just in case the other Heroes fall or rebel against the Shinju.
• Shared Family Quirks: She shares her ancestor's strange fondness for having her ears cleaned as revealed in Hanayui no Kirameki, though unlike Wakaba, it's much less pronounced on her end since Sonoko doesn't have her own Hinata to do it for her.
• Shipper on Deck:
  • Seems to be one for Gin and Sumi; she bases the main characters of her novel on them, and has Gin Bridal Carry Sumi for inspiration. In the Washio Sumi Radio 4koma, she outright pens a romance with Gin and Sumi as the main characters.
  • In the bonus chapter of the aforementioned manga, she approves of Yuna/Togo, and in Sonoko After she wants to "write something down" when she sees how Togo acts around Yuna.
  • In her character introduction in Hanayui no Kirameki, she says outright that she can't decide whether to ship Yuna with Togo or Karin.
• Sleepyhead: She dozes off a lot in the light novel, and she claims she can sleep anywhere at anytime. In addition, all of her named fairies have something to do with sleep or dreams.
• Smarter Than You Look: She's genuinely airheaded, but is likely the most intelligent character in the franchise bar none.
• Spoiled Sweet: The Nogis are incredibly wealthy, and at one point Sonoko mentions that whenever she had talked about wanting something for a gift, she received it instantly. Despite this, she's incredibly sweet and kind and is never shown to be arrogant about her wealth at all.
• Stepford Smiler: The Sonoko in Reminescence short story ^note taking place between the end of WaSuYu and Episode 8 of the anime shows that while Sonoko tried to keep on her usually cheerful facade throughout her enshrinement, she came very close to completely giving in to despair and only made it through thanks to her memories of her friendship with Gin and Sumi. She also has a tendency to keep up her usual cheery smiles in front of others even when she's deeply hurting on the inside.
• Story-Breaker Power: She's stated to be more powerful than the five Heroes combined, having twenty-one fairies and all, and she's almost certainly right.
• Strong Family Resemblance: Despite being generations apart, and barring a few notable differences (such as their personalities being practically opposite of one another), she's almost the spitting image of her ancestor, Wakaba Nogi. You'd have to wonder how Wakaba could somehow mistake Togo as her descendant with this in mind in the 4koma where Sonoko and Togo interview her.
  • Her mother as shown in the third Washio Sumi Chapter movie also looks very much like an adult Sonoko.
• Super Mode: Her Mankai in the original light novel simply increases the size of her spear and lets her manipulate floating spearheads. In Washio Sumi Chapter, her Mankai takes the form of a flying boat whose "oars" can extend to pierce enemies or fired as spears and controlled from afar.
• Took a Level in Cynic: While she's still more or less the same airheaded but sweet Sonoko from WaSuYu, her traumatic experiences and suffering at the end of the prequel combined with the things she learned during the two year timeskip before the main series have hardened her to some extent. There's a noticeably distinct coldness in her tone of voice whenever she's being serious especially whenever she speaks to a member of the Taisha (outside of Karin's brother, Harunobu). In Hanayui no Kirameki, she's not above playing her own friends, including her own ancestor, like fiddles for her own amusement, though these schemes ultimately turn out harmless.
• Tranquil Fury: In the Washio Sumi bonus chapter, when the Taisha try to use Gin's death to guilt her into fighting Togo.
• Unwanted False Faith: She is clearly uncomfortable with being seen as a god by the Taisha.
• Verbal Tic: More noticeable in the books but she has a slow paced, slurred way of speaking where she sometimes extends the end of her sentences.
• Walking Spoiler: She's a major character in Washio Sumi is a Hero, the prequel light novel. Her appearing midway creates a noticeable spoiler that Togo is Sumi.
• Yuri Fangirl:
  • Tends to have... interesting thoughts about her friends. She apparently writes romance novels in her free time.
  • When Yuna receives a love letter, she suggests having either Togo or Karin dress up as a guy and pretend to be her boyfriend, complete with sending a photo of a Bridal Carry to the writer.

Gin Minowa

An energetic troublemaker who appears in the prequel Light Novel Washio Sumi Wa Yusha De Aru. She instinctively helps others, often to her own detriment. She is the tomboyish classmate of Sumi and Sonoko, and all together they form the first Hero team. In her Hero form, she dual-wields a pair of large axe-blades. She is killed in Chapter 4.

• An Arm and a Leg: It isn't shown happening in her final fight, but in Washio Sumi Chapter, her corpse is missing an arm.
• Attack! Attack! Attack!: Being the melee bruiser of her team, this is her preferred method of attack. It nearly gets her killed in her first fight before her team learns to coordinate with each other.
• Badass Boast: Her last words in Washio Sumi Chapter:
  "I'll return! I'll protect! You monsters wouldn't understand this kind of strength! This is what it means to be human! This is determination! This is willpower! THIS IS OUR SPIRIT!"
• Book Dumb: She doesn't take her studies too seriously, which initially causes some friction with the more studious Sumi.
• Cool Big Sis: Aspires to be one to her baby brother. One of her final thoughts is her wondering whether he would be proud of her.
  • In Washio Sumi Chapter, she has another brother who is five years old.
• Defiant to the End: Fights three Vertex by herself until the very end despite knowing that it’s a suicide mission.
• Died Standing Up: Dies like this after pushing back three Vertex by herself in Chapter 4.
• Doomed by Canon: Those who watch the anime first will notice that she's the only member of the original Hero trio unaccounted for in the anime. True to the trope, she dies halfway through the novel.
• Dual Wielding: Dual-wields two large axes in her Hero form. Additionally, the two inheritors of Gin's legacy— Karin and Mebuki— both use a dual-wielding fighting style, albeit with different weapons (katanas in Karin's case, and the Sentinels' bayonets in Mebuki's).
• Dude Magnet: Sumi briefly mentions during Gin's funeral that Gin had a lot of male admirers who were interested in her from afar. Unfortunately for them at this point, she's already gone.
• Expy: Her battle scene in Chapter 4 mirrors a legend of the Japanese warrior Benkei: To protect his lord Minamoto no Yoshitsune, he alone held off an entire army at a bridge leading to his lord's castle, killing hundreds of soldiers. Hours later, the terrified soldiers saw him standing still; when they approached him, they realized that he had died standing up. Gin similarly holds off three Vertex on her own on the bridge leading to the Shinju, and she too is found having died a heroic standing death.
• Fairy Companion: In Hanayui no Kirameki she starts out with Suzuka Gozen, a sword-wielding oni woman.
• Friend to All Children: She loves her little brothers dearly, and she says that her only real aspiration in life is to become a mother.
• Genki Girl: She's very cheerful, and she proudly gives Sumi and Sonoko a grand tour of her favorite hang-out spot; the local shopping mall. An excerpt from the light novel:
  "The place around where she sat suddenly became cheerful. This is Minowa Gin's appeal; abysmal cheerfulness."
• Gratuitous English: Indulges in this from time to time, saying "Mai Furendo" (My Friend), and "Naisu Aidea" (Nice Idea) for example.
• Honor Before Reason: Gin instinctively helps others, even though it often gets her into trouble.
• Killed Off for Real: Succumbs to her injuries after pushing back three Vertex alone.

• Playing with Fire: The animated adaptation of WaSuYu reveals that Gin can ignite her axes for extra speed and power. She is also wreathed in flames during her transformation sequence.
• Sacrificial Lion: Is arguably the strongest member of her team yet is killed halfway into the story.
• Super Mode: Though she died before the Mankai system was implemented, in Hanayui no Kirameki she receives her own Mankai, which takes the form of a giant mechanical tiger that she rides on.

The homeroom teacher of Sumi's class, she is also a Taisha worker responsible for training and mentoring the Heroes. She has a stern exterior, but cares deeply for her students.

After the tragic events of Washio Sumi is a Hero she has become much more involved in the Taisha, and has also become much more jaded and cynical. She is the mentor of the Sentinel corps in Kusunoki Mebuki is a Hero, and serves as the Taisha's messenger to the Hero Club.

• Adaptation Expansion: The WaSuYu trio's homeroom adviser was originally nameless in the original novel and not much about her was known beyond serving as their main guide and teacher during their tenure as Heroes prior to the main series. She didn't even have a character design back then. Come the animated adaptations of the prequel, she's given a much bigger role and even a name and face to go with it and even becomes important in Hero's Chapter and especially the Kusunoki Mebuki is a Hero series.
• Bearer of Bad News: After WaSuYu she's often the one who brings the more unpleasant requests and information to the Heroes. For example, she was the one who asked Togo to sacrifice herself in place of the other miko and informed Yuna what exactly had happened to her when she defeated the Leo Vertex, that the curse was causing this body to break down, and that she probably only has a couple of months left to live.
• The Consigliere: In Great Blooming Chapter, it's revealed that she was complicit in Sonoko's original plan to lead a coup against the Taisha after the final battle, before the Hero Club talked her out of it. In the Distant Finale, she's shown close to Sonoko's side as Sonoko gives a speech as the new Omikoshi and dressed differently than the assembled Taisha priests, implying that she's Sonoko's right-hand woman.
• Does Not Like Spam: Hates green peppers, which she's embarrassed about.
  • One of the ways that Sonoko amused herself during her enshrinement was to have the Taisha make Aki-sensei eat lots of dishes containing green peppers as part of "an important duty to the Shinju."
• Eyepatch of Power: Wears one in the epilogue, as her right eye had already begun to turn into wheat.
• Hidden Buxom: In the second Washio Sumi Chapter movie's hot springs visit her body leaves the Heroes (including the already well-endowed Sumi) in awe.
  Gin: An adult's body is really something else, huh?
• Kindhearted Cat Lover: When Gin brought a lost kitten to school one day, Aki-sensei kept it in the faculty room and doted on it whenever she thought nobody was watching. She's very embarrassed when she learns that Sonoko saw this.
• Laser-Guided Karma: She loses an eye at the end of Hero Chapter, as it had already begun to turn to wheat, and its the same eye that Sonoko lost to her first Sange; Word of God describes it as her punishment for contributing to the girls' suffering. But on the other hand, she only loses an eye instead of turning entirely to wheat and gets to live to repair her relationship with her former charges, as she had always felt deep regret for what they were forced to go through.
• Named by the Adaptation: She was originally only referred to as the girls' teacher in the original light novel, whereas in Washio Sumi Chapter she's given a name (which possibly places her as a descendant from a minor character in Nogi Wakaba) and an expanded role.
• No Full Name Given: Her given name is never revealed.
• Reasonable Authority Figure: She cares deeply about her charges and only wants whats best for them.
• Rebuilt Pedestal: Sonoko and Togo are clearly disgusted with what's become of their old homeroom teacher when they meet face to face. After the final battle, Aki-sensei is finally able to grieve Gin's death together with Togo and Sonoko, and they repair their relationship.
• Stern Teacher: Her students all saw her as this, but not without appreciating the caring side that came along with it.
• Stoic Spectacles: Female example, during her more serious moments. Best shown in her final appearance in the final Washio Sumi Chapter movie, after the tragic aftermath of Sonoko and Sumi's final fight with the Vertexes, implicitly holding herself responsible for what happened to both girls, especially Sonoko.

  • Gin's death and especially the tragic state that Sonoko and Sumi were left in after their final battle in WaSuYu turned her from a stern yet caring teacher into a defeated cynic who would have no qualms with sacrificing the few for the sake of the many.

A serious, strong-willed girl who witnessed her world being destroyed by the Vertex. As a "Hero", or a person who wields divine power, she vows revenge upon the Vertex for the lives that they took and the world that they stole from her. She wields a divine blade known as Ikutachi.

She is also the ancestor of Sonoko Nogi.

• 100% Heroism Rating: Wakaba is adored, highly esteemed, admired, and well-loved by not only her friends, but also to the public in general, and is easily the Hero who is given the best regard by nearly everyone. This is best exemplified in Chapter 16 where she not only succeeded in regaining the crowds' favor after the Heroes had recently received a growing critical reception from them following Tamako and Anzu's deaths and Chikage's rampage, but also uplifted their spirits with a rousing speech (admittedly written by the Taisha) that was met with much cheer and praise from the masses. This is the very trait Chikage highly covets and envies her for.
• The Ace: Easily the most powerful and skilled of the Heroes, she easily takes on enemy groups many times the size of her teammates.
• Badass Creed: "Everything is worthy of reward. That is the Nogi way of life."
• Blue Is Heroic: Her image color is blue and becomes very heroic post Character Development.
• Bridal Carry: Gives one to Hinata during Chapter 10 when the group goes out to explore the world outside Shikkoku. Judging from her lack of embarrassment over the whole thing, she doesn't seem to realize the implications behind her carrying Hinata "princess-style".
• Butt-Monkey: She doesn't have it as bad as Tamako, but the 4koma series just loves making fun of her, no thanks to both Hinata and Sonoko constantly calling her cute all the time.
• The Cape: As part of her Character Development, she eventually grows to become this, after she decides to forgo her pursuit of revenge against the Vertex in favor of truly protecting her friends and the world for their sake.
• Childhood Friends: She and Hinata have been best friends since they were small children, and this continues after the three-year Time Skip.
• The Comically Serious: Hinata finds this side of her adorable though, much to Wakaba's embarrassment.
• Endearingly Dorky: She outwardly appears as a stern, uptight, and intimidating person at first glance on the outside, but on the inside, she frets over this and comically gets depressed whenever she tries hard to be an approachable person, only to hilariously fail each time. Not to mention the cute faces she makes whenever she gets embarrassed. Hinata definitely agrees.
• Even the Girls Want Her: It's mentioned in Hanayui no Kirameki that Wakaba is very popular among girls and that she gets a lot of love letters from them because of it.
• Face of a Thug: To her chagrin, her stern and serious-looking face has a tendency to intimidate her classmates.
• Famous Ancestor: She's Sonoko's in the present timeline.
• Foregone Conclusion: Sonoko's and the Nogi family's existence in general centuries later guarantees that Wakaba survives to live a full life until her adulthood.
• Heroic BSoD:
  • Is in one of these for a good part of Chapter 6 due to her guilt over Yuna's coma and Chikage claiming that her obsession with revenge was responsible before declaring that she won't follow Wakaba anymore. Anzu helps her snap out of it, though.
  • A comedic example of this happens earlier in an official 4koma tie-in where Sonoko and Togo interview her. She did not take it well when she learned that Sonoko, who Wakaba says is similar to Hinata, is her descendant.

She's also well-loved and looked up to by the people around her, and fights the Vertex for their sake. This is also one of the reasons why Chikage resents and envies her.
• Jerkass Realization: After her recklessness in Chapter 5 causes Yuna to be seriously injured after taking a hit for her and Chikage's What the Hell, Hero? speech (and Hinata's surprising refusal to help), she realizes that her obsession with revenge and the past may have been blinding her as an effective leader.
• Katanas Are Just Better: Her divine blade, Ikutachi, which is said to be infused with life energy.

Hinata Uesato

A friendly, easygoing girl who has been Wakaba's best friend since childhood. She is a "Miko," a girl who can hear the voice of the gods, whose powers awoke during the Vertex disaster in 2015 AD. Amongst the Miko, she has the greatest connection with the Shinju.

• Ambiguously Lesbian: She flirts with Wakaba constantly and boasts of having an extensive collection of Wakaba photos. When asked by middle school!Sonoko what kind of person Wakaba is in Hanayui no Kirameki, she begins gushing in excitement and fangirls over how great Wakaba is to them.
• Beware the Nice Ones:
  • Has a scary side when angry, which even Wakaba is afraid of. Just ask Tamako.
  • On a more serious side, FuYuYu shows that her tenure as head of the Taisha has seen her become incredibly ruthless for the sake of preserving peace. She casually tells Yuzuki and Lily that she's had plenty of people who were threats to Shikoku's stability eliminated, and that if they reveal what's behind the wall to anyone, then they, their families, friends and everyone they've ever interacted with will be disappeared.
• Buxom Beauty Standard: Inverted. While being well-endowed herself, she personally thinks that more slender frames (like Wakaba's) are more beautiful.
• Camera Fiend: Taking photos of Wakaba is a hobby she made for herself.
• A Child Shall Lead Them: Becomes the leader of the new Taisha in the epilogue.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: Shown best in Hanayui no Kirameki where it's revealed that she doesn't like the idea of Wakaba dating anyone but her. It's also heavily implied that Hinata chases off any of Wakaba's would-be suitors whenever they show up.
• D-Cup Distress: Doesn't appreciate the breast envy she gets from the other girls and gets incredibly embarrassed when Masuzu bluntly points out her large chest to her.
• Demoted to Extra: Despite essentially being the deuteragonist and being second only to Wakaba and Takashima in importance and focus in the prequel novels, Hinata's role is greatly reduced in Great Blooming Chapter as most of the portions the anime did adapt from the Nogi Wakaba is a Hero series either didn't involve her heavily from the original story, or skipped the parts she was supposed to be active in. Indeed, anime-only viewers would have a hard time figuring out exactly who she's supposed to be and why she's essential to Wakaba's team of Heroes unless they read the prequel novels for more information.
• Expy Coexistence: Her having the largest rack among the girls as well as being their team's resident Ambiguously Lesbian member thanks to her constantly fawning over The Hero Wakaba makes her one to Togo.
• I Did What I Had to Do: She really wasn't happy about it but her allowing six of her fellow Mikos to be sacrificed to the fire can be seen as this as this was the only way she and the Taisha could appease the heavenly gods who are trying to destroy the remainder of humanity into making a temporary ceasefire since four out of the five chosen Heroes are now dead. And that's not even getting into what she did to get out of being sacrificed herself when she was originally chosen to be one of the six... However, the Uesato Hinata is a Miko side stories reveal that those same six girls actually volunteered to be sacrificed and actively prevented both Hinata and Masuzu from being offered. Regardless, Hinata still feels remorse over what happened.
• The Lancer: With Wakaba, balancing out Wakaba's more strict and serious personality.
• Ms. Exposition: Her role in Hanayui no Kirameki, serving as the Heroes' guide in the game.
• Stepford Smiler: The epilogue of Nogi Wakaba reveals that the deaths of all their other friends have turned her into a nervous wreck, despite her attempts at hiding it for the entire series. Just Wakaba being late to class is enough to cause her to have a breakdown, thinking that Wakaba had had to fight again.
• Survivor's Guilt: She was originally supposed to be used as a sacrifice in order to negotiate the ceasefire, but she used her influence in order to get out of it, both because she knew that Wakaba needed her emotional support and out of a more selfish desire to not want to be separated from her. She breaks down when she confesses this to Wakaba, calling herself a monstrous woman.
• Team Mom: She tends to be the one to encourage everyone to resolve their conflicts and has a motherly personality in general (except when it comes to Wakaba sometimes). She even proudly admits in her 4koma interview that it was she who raised Wakaba. When Tamako and Anzu, and later Chikage die, she personally volunteers to clean their bodies to prepare them for their funerals.
• Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Wakaba's tomboy.
• Waif Prophet: As a Miko, she can hear divine voices. During the Vertex disaster, she was able to guide Wakaba and several survivors across Japan to safety. She also has the highest affinity of any Miko, and is even called the "Shinju's favorite" by Aki.
• Yandere: Played for laughs. Togo, Chikage, and Mito, all three of whom are known for being rather easily jealous whenever Yuki, Takashima, and Shiratori are involved respectively, all believe Hinata is this for Wakaba and are kind of terrified of her for it. Whether Hinata really is one or not is left up in the air, though she adamantly denies this when they point this out to her.

Tamako Doi

An energetic girl who loves the outdoors. She is very emotional, laughing and getting angry easily. Her best friend is her junior, Anzu. Her weapon is a bladed shield named Kamuyatate-hime that can be thrown and returned like a yo-yo.

• A-Cup Angst: She's quite jealous of Hinata's impressive endowment, angrily molesting her in Chapter 2 which is implied to be a common occurrence. She also assaults Togo in the 4koma (or at least tries to before getting tied up).
• Big Little Sister: Although her and Anzu aren't sisters, they're described as being like siblings- although since the shorter and louder Tamako is older, it's stated that people don't know which one of them is the "big sister." In Chapter 13 they finally decide that Tamako is the older sister.
• Butt-Monkey: In the 4koma, whenever she appears she's almost instantly tied and hung up by Togo.
• Expy Coexistence: Of Fu, being the resident boisterous girl of her team who is also considered the oldest one among them. Her sisterly relationship with Anzu is even similar to that of the Inubozaki sisters, despite not being related just like them.

A bookworm who, despite her height, is actually younger compared to the other Heroes. Although she is physically weak, she is the brains of the group. She is extremely close to her senpai Tamako. In battle, she wields an automatic crossbow named Kinkyusen.

• Cute Bookworm: She particularly loves romance novels. In the 4koma, Tamako says that one time Anzu was so focused on reading her book that she dipped her udon noodles in water instead of sauce.
• Delicate and Sickly: She's physically frail in general.
• Dies Wide Open: In a symbolic way both her and her sister died like this. Staring at each other while holding each other hand.
• Expy Coexistence: Of Itsuki, being the resident Shrinking Violet of her team who is also considered the youngest one among them^note  Though Anzu is a year level lower than her teammates, she's actually their age while Itsuki is not. . Her sisterly relationship with Tamako is even similar to that of the Inubozaki sisters, despite not being related just like them. She's also a budding Yuri Fangirl just like Itsuki is, though much less subtle.

• The Strategist: Although she's physically weak, her tactics have saved her team's asses more than once (without her idea of having a relay system they all would've died during the Battle of Marugame Castle). She also tends to win any sort of game they play, such as the mock battle when her and Tamako convinced Hinata to give Wakaba fake information to think they had been eliminated (followed by Anzu promptly betraying Tamako).
• Super Mode: Her Trump Card allows her to channel Yuki-jyorou, the ice woman, and fire blizzard winds from her crossbow.
• Together in Death: With Tamako in Chapter 13.
• Weak, but Skilled: Is described as relying more on her intelligence than on her strength; she's physically the weakest of all of the Heroes. It's specifically noted that she would likely be the first to die if a battle went sour. That's exactly what happens, but she dies with the Hero stated to have the highest offensive power too.
• Yuri Fangirl: Very likely the reason why she had Tamako, Wakaba, and Yuuna act out a love triangle scene from her favorite romance novel with Tamako as the girl and Wakaba and Yuuna as the "male love interests" who are both in love with her.

Chikage Koori

A shy, lonely girl. Besides her troubled home life her quiet personality made her the target of bullying, but everything changed when she was selected to be a Hero. She is mistrustful by nature, only opening up to her friend Yuna. In combat, she wields a scythe.

• Abusive Parents: Her mother left her and her father for another man and her father became a useless drunkard after that. Not only did her manchild of a father blame her for his misfortunes in life, he also refused to even give her a proper funeral after her death.
• All of the Other Reindeer: In her backstory, the people in her village ostracized her and bullied her relentlessly all because of her mother's affair with another man.
• Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Is the most aloof and brooding of Wakaba's Hero Team, willing to open up solely to Yuna initially. She does eventually become closer to the rest of the team, though she really took her time to do so.
• Break the Cutie: In Chapter 15, getting trash-talked and bullied by her fellow villagers that she had fought to protect causes Chikage to not so much break as completely snap.
• Chuunibyou: She has a flair for dramatic poses in the 4koma. Yuna also reveals (to Chikage's great embarassment) how upon getting the high score at an arcade shooting game she struck a pose and declared "The chosen one stands undefeated!"
  • Not to mention her character's name in a game that's clearly Monster Hunter (that's she's extremely proud of) is C-Shadow.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: She feels very possessive towards Yuna, who is her Only Friend.
• Corrupted Character Copy: Of Tougou. Just like when she used to be Sumi Washio, Chikage was quiet and serious and secretly thought she was superior to others. They were also devoted to the Yuna of their respective series. The difference is that Tougou eventually grew out of it and formed bonds with others, while Chikage always only cared about her Yuna. Also they didn't get along with the Nogi of their groups, but Tougou learned to understand Sonoko and became friends with her, while Chikage always assumed the worst of Wakaba and only regretted it when she died.
• Dark and Troubled Past: When her mother had an affair and left their village to be with her lover, word got around and Chikage was bullied mercilessly as a "whore's daughter." At one point her ear was even slashed when a couple of kids tried to cut her hair. As a result Chikage has a very hard time trusting her fellow Heroes, only opening up to Yuna.
• Despair Event Horizon: Tamako and Anzu dying horribly right in front of her, her one pillar of support (Yuna) being hospitalized and her finding out that people are beginning to badmouth the Heroes that have sacrificed so much for them seems to have sent her over this at the end of Chapter 14.
• Died in Your Arms Tonight: Dies in Wakaba's arms after being fatally wounded while protecting her from a Stardust's bite.
• Dies Wide Open: She pass away like this in Wakaba's arms.
• Doppelgänger Attack: Chikage's Trump Card allows her to channel the Shichinin Misaki, a collective of seven vengeful spirits, to split herself into seven. If one of them is "killed," it will disappear and another will take its place, making her unkillable unless all seven of her die simultaneously.
• Dying Declaration of Hate: Chikage gives both of this and a Dying Declaration of Love to Wakaba as she lays dying, saying that while she had hated her, she also admired and loved her just as much.
• Flower Motifs: Chikage's flower is the red spider lily which symbolizes death, loss, neglect, or abandonment. Chikage fights with a scythe and gains a white hood when she uses her Trump Card, making her appearance similar to the Grim Reaper. She was also abandoned by her mother and unlike the other girls her name was wiped from the Taisha's records after she died, making it impossible for her to live on in memory besides the proof of existence Hinata hid.
• Friendless Background: She didn't have friends until Yuna came along.
• Gamer Chick: Videogames are stated to be her hobby, and the cover of Chapter 4 shows her playing what is definitely a PSP.
  • The 4koma shows that she's also very passionate about tabletop RPGs, specifically Call of Cthulhu (implying that she's a bit of a Nightmare Fetishist)
• Green-Eyed Monster: Played very much for drama in Chapter 16, as seeing Yuna happily chatting with Wakaba without her was what finally drove the (already extremely unstable) Chikage to try and kill Wakaba.
• Heel Realization: As Wakaba defends her after she was forcibly de-powered for trying to kill her, Chikage realizes that Wakaba and Yuna had been suffering from the Hate Plague just as much as she had but had chosen to keep going anyway, and that it was a choice that she could make too. This leads to her Taking the Bullet for Wakaba shortly afterward.
• I Just Want to Be Special: Everyone started treating her better when her Hero powers awakened, and as a result her powers are stated to be the most important to her.
• In the Hood: Using her Trump Card gives her (and her six clones) a sinister-looking white hood, fitting for channeling an avatar of death.
• Jerkass Has a Point: Although her motives were less than noble considering her jealousy toward Wakaba, she had a point in her What the Hell, Hero? speech toward her (complete with a slap) that Wakaba's recklessness and insistence on doing things alone had put everyone in danger and had led to Yuna being seriously injured.
• Loners Are Freaks: At least people seem to have thought this about her, seeing as how she was bullied. She's also the least trusting of the group.
• More than Mind Control: Although Chikage's being affected by the Hate Plague side-effect of the Trump Cards, she's much more susceptible to it due to her insecurities.
• Protectorate: She's likely unaware of it, but she's this to Yoshika Hanamoto, the Miko who found her and selected her as a Hero on the night the Vertex disaster struck.
• Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her eyes go from brown to red when she transforms.
• The Resenter: Towards Wakaba for being everything Chikage had always wished to be but couldn't.
• Sinister Scythe: Wields one forged from the divine blade Ohagari, which belonged to a farming god who went on a rampage after his friend's death and cut down his funeral hut. Chikage describes it as a "weapon that defiles death," and is in direct opposition to Wakaba's Ikutachi, a blade of life.
• Taking the Bullet: She dies after taking a Vertex attack aimed at Wakaba.
• Unknown Rival: She's bitterly determined to be a better Hero than Wakaba, although Wakaba is (at least for now) unaware of it. She's gotten over the worst of it now, though.
  • It begins to manifest itself again after Tamako and Anzu's deaths, although it's mainly due to a combination of anger at public opinion turning against the Heroes and the Hate Plague effect of the Trump Cards.
• Un-person: Due to her rampage in her village and her attempt to murder Wakaba, the Taisha refuse to consider her a Hero in death, denying her the burial service that Tamako and Anzu received and erasing her name from all records. The epilogue of NoWaYu states that Hinata ensured that proof of her existence was enshrined someplace safe, though. The Uesato Hinata is a Miko side stories reveal that Yoshika Hanamoto buried her in her own family's shrine after Chikage's father refused to give her a proper burial.

Yuna Takashima

An ordinary, cheerful second-year student. Not much about her personal life is known, but she makes friends easily with her happy-go-lucky personality and helps everyone get along. She is skilled in martial arts and wields a pair of tekko, or armored knuckles, named Ama-no-Sakate.

• Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: The Taisha believe that she became an arahitogami, or a human deity, and became a part of the Shinju after her death. Takashima confirms this in Great Full Bloom Chapter, although she's able to act independently of the Shinju, and its even heavily implied that she is Gyuuki, Yuna's initial fairy.
• Calling Your Attacks: Her signature "Yuusha Punch."
• Deity of Human Origin: Becomes a part of the Shinju when it absorbs her body after she dies.
• Expy Coexistence: An obvious one to Yuna Yuki, to the point where even their heights are the same. When she died and became a part of the Shinju, the Taisha begin a new practice of naming any girl who performs a reverse clap at birth Yuna, in reverence to her. So basically all Yunas in-series are her expies.
• Genki Girl: A "softer" version than Tamako.
• Heroic RRoD: After trying to channel Shuten-Douji a second time in Chapter 14, she can't complete her transformation, and trying to use her Hero Punch on it anyway causes her to instead cough up massive amounts of blood and collapse unconscious into the Seto Inland Sea.
• Immortal Breaker: As a child she was blessed by the Reverse-Clapping God, who took a liking to her as she played in its shrine, and received a touch that curses all divinity. This has been passed down to other Yunas throughout the Divine Era, including the current holder Yuna Yuki.
• Killed Off for Real: Seemingly dies after taking out three evolved Vertex on her own, while her body is absorbed by the Shinju.
• Mysterious Past: Very little is initially shown about her past, and even in-universe her teammates didn't know much about her. Toward the end of the series she finally tells Wakaba about herself, revealing that she's a mostly-ordinary girl from Nara Prefecture who enjoyed playing around a local shrine.
• Only Friend: She's Chikage's only friend.
• Power Fist: Wields a set of Tekko, which are Okinawan "fist-load" weapons designed to increase the mass of one's fists.
• The Power of Love: Although the Hate Plague that channeling Shuten-douji inflicts her with almost causes her to give up, Yuna overcomes it by thinking of everyone that she loves.

  • Her Trump Card channels the storm god Ichimokuren, which allows her to unleash a Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs attack said to be on par with a thousand nuclear bombs.
  • Upon seeing Tamako and Anzu's apparent deaths in Chapter 13 she channels the oni king Shuten-douji, an extremely dangerous youkai that the Taisha had specifically warned the Heroes to never ever summon. It causes her tekko to grow to enormous size and gives her insane amounts of power, able to effortlessly destroy the Scorpio Vertex that none of the other Heroes' Trump Cards could even scratch.
• Take Me Instead: When she talks to Yuna Yuki in Great Full Bloom Chapter, she offers to take on the curse of the Heavenly Gods in her stead as from their prespective the two of them are the same person. Unsurprisingly, Yuna Yuki refuses, not wanting someone else to suffer in her place.

Utano Shiratori

Voiced by: Ayaka Suwa (Hanayui no Kirameki)

A Hero from the city of Suwa who keeps in contact with Wakaba. In contrast to Shikoku's team of five Heroes, she is the only Hero defending the entirety of Nagano. In battle, she wields a whip.

• Bolivian Army Ending: The final scene of her chapter is her and Mito standing alone against a massive swarm of Vertex in a battle that they have no hope of winning.
• Call to Agriculture: Her dream is to become the "King of All Farmers."
• Clothes Make the Superman: Unlike the other Heroes, Shiratori doesn't have a transformation app and instead has to change into her Hero outfit manually. The transformation app was apparently developed during the time she bought defending Suwa.
• A Day in the Limelight: The bonus Shiratori Utano is a Hero, containing the story of Shiratori and her miko Mito and how they defended Suwa alone for three years before its inevitable fall.
• Fairy Companion: Hanayui no Kirameki gives her Satori, a green monkey spirit with prominent ears, as her default fairy.
• Genki Girl: Although she sounds mature and collected when talking to Wakaba, she actually has a very cheerful personality.
• Gratuitous English: She would occasionally sprinkle random English words in her speech at times.
• Hold the Line: The gods tell Shiratori's miko that Nagano and Shiratori were bait to distract the Vertexes until the Heroes of Shikoku were strong enough.
• Killed Off for Real: Is heavily implied to have died with the fall of Nagano in Chapter 2.
• One-Man Army: Defended the entire city of Suwa alone for the better part of three years, whereas Shikoku has five Heroes defending it and they only had those three years to train thanks to Shiratori.
• Plucky Girl: Despite facing overwhelming circumstances, her boundless optimism and unwavering work as a Hero inspired the entirety of Suwa to believe in the future.
• Take Up My Sword: In Chapter 11 Yuna finds a box in a field in Suwa, containing a hoe and a letter to Wakaba asking her to use it to plant things when they're rebuilding the world.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Soba, as compared to the Shikoku girls' beloved udon. She and Wakaba are constantly arguing over whether soba or udon is better.
• We Hardly Knew Ye: Although the Shiratori Utano is a Hero chapter and Hanayui no Kirameki mobile game fix this somewhat.

Mito Fujimori

Voiced by: Maria Naganawa (Hanayui no Kirameki)

A Miko of Suwa, and both assistant and friend to Shiratori. The two of them alone defend Nagano Prefecture. She is quiet and pessimistic, in contrast to the cheerful Shiratori.

• Boyish Short Hair: Inverted. She has very short hair, but is definitely girlier than the brash Utano.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: Towards Utano. When she saw her talking to Wakaba and later tried to tell Mito the conversation she had, Mito runs off angrily at the thought of Utano making more friends than her. However, she later admits her jealousy went too far and in Hanayui ni Kirameki she has no problem with Utano talking to the other heroes.
• Friendless Background: She used to have no friends before meeting Utano, that's why she's so fixated in keeping her around.
• Heroic Self-Deprecation: Is deeply insecure and often thinks of herself as a load to others.
• Killed Off for Real: Presumably along with everyone else in Suwa
• Red Oni, Blue Oni: Is the Blue Oni to Shiratori's Red, being soft-spoken and pessimistic to Shiratori's cheerful and optimistic nature.
• Waif Prophet: As a Miko, she can hear the voices of the gods, which she then relays to Shiratori.

Masuzu Aki

Voiced by: Masumi Tazawa

A Miko of Shikoku, originally from Ehime Prefecture. She was the one who had first found Tamako during the Vertex disaster and led her to Anzu, and the three had worked together until they reached the Taisha. Unlike Hinata she and the other Miko are cloistered within the Taisha's headquarters.

• A-Cup Angst: She's not particularly pleased that Hinata's more well-endowed than she is despite being older than the latter.
• Big Sister Instinct: Despite her rather boisterous attitude, she acts like a surrogate older sister figure to Tamako and Anzu as well as her fellow mikos Hinata and Yoshika. When Tamako and Anzu were killed in action, she was utterly devastated. It also helps that she's an actual older sister to her Uranophobia-stricken younger brother too.
• Heroic BSoD: After Tamako and Anzu died, the Uesato Hinata Is A Miko series revealed that she spent her time confined in her quarters lying on her bed without eating for days, depressed at what happened to the two of them. Her usual cheery narration in the novels also became gloomier as a result.
• Never Got to Say Goodbye: Having never gotten to see Tamako and Anzu again before their deaths causes her to collapse into a sobbing mess at their funeral.
• Nun Too Holy: Despite having constant contact with the Shinju she basically acts exactly how you'd expect a teenage girl to act, complaining about their daily waterfall meditation and not always following the rules very closely.
• Tsundere: She acts a bit like this regarding Tamako and Anzu, pretending (unconvincingly) that she isn't very worried about them at all.

Sekka Akihara

I will live, no matter what it takes. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

A Hero of the Anno Domini Era who protected Hokkaido. She's bright and sociable on the outside, but her smile hides a clever, manipulative personality. Her weapon is a naginata.

• Action Fashionista: She mentions that she has expressed interest in fashion at one point and often helps to coordinate some of the other Heroes' clothes for special events. As time goes on, she becomes the Hero Club's go-to person for anything related to fashion.
• Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Is this to some degree according to her description.
• Fairy Companion: Her initial fairy in Hanayui no Kirameki is Keizobou, a samurai fox spirit. Sekka mentions that it can talk, much like Yoshiteru, but only via telepathy.
• Friendless Background: In her character introduction she mentions that her niche hobbies (like touring castles) made her something of an outcast back home.
• Our Gods Are Different: The gods that employ her are the Kamuy, the myriad gods of Ainu mythology who are distinct from the gods who comprise the Shinju. Hokkaido, where Sekka comes from, is the homeland of the Ainu people.
• The Slacker: Doesn't really like giving her full effort in fighting and feels like she isn't the best person to have been chosen as a Hero.

Natsume Kohagura

Voiced by: Nozomi Yamamoto (Hanayui no Kirameki)

Let's combine our strength and do this.

A Hero of the Anno Domini Era who protected Okinawa. Her imposing, stoic demeanor may scare people, but she's actually kind, gentle, and fiercely loyal toward her few friends. Her weapon is a pair of nunchaku.

Yuna Akamine

A mysterious Hero from the beginning of the Divine Era who calls herself the Yuna of the Akamine family, and who indeed bears a striking resemblance to the two other Heroes named "Yuna." She was summoned to fight against the Heroes by the rebelling gods and has the ability to control the Vertex that they create. Her divine weapon is a pile bunker.

---

• Affably Evil: She's polite to the other heroes and honored to meet the other Yunas (especially Takashima), despite her appearance essentially being a declaration of war.
• Ambiguously Brown: Her family's implied to have come from Okinawa, explaining her darker complexion compared to the other two Yunas.
• Anti-Villain: She's not outright malicious, even being friendly towards the Heroes she's supposed to be antagonizing, and she just loves dropping hints that would help aid the Heroes in the plot during their encounters despite being on the side of the rebelling gods. In fact, some of the Heroes, especially the two Yunas, speculate that some of her actions are actively out to help them rather than screw with them.
  • Her motive is finally revealed in Chapter 28: She wants the Heroes to stay within the Shinju forever so that they don't have to face their fates in reality. She reveals that roughly half of them will meet a cruel fate, tells Shiratori to her face that she will die and that Suwa will be overrun, and all but spells out to Gin that she'll die as well.
• Blood Knight: Unlike the two Yunas, she loves a good fight. After Itsuki proves her moxy to her following Akamine trapping the other Heroes except her, she was all in to go all out on Itsuki before the other Heroes set themselves free.
• Chekhov's Gunman: The Akamine family's name first showed up in the adaptation of Washio Sumi Chapter, as one of the names engraved on the Seto Bridge together with the families of the Heroes from Wakaba's time. The Akamine also later get mentioned in Sonoko in Reminiscence and the Kusunoki Mebuki is a Hero series, as the family (together with Yumiko's ancestors, the Miroku family) who defended Shikkoku from Vertex cultists and terrorists some generations after Wakaba's generation had passed. They're finally represented by Yuna Akamine in Hanayui no Kirameki, who acts as an antagonist against the Heroes in the game.
• Dark and Troubled Past: She hints at this, saying that joining the rebelling gods would make sense to the people of her era despite it posing a threat to Shikoku, and she claims that she's used to fighting other humans.
• Did Not See That Coming: Twice: The previously undeployable Sonoko finally being capable of transforming is one thing, but her being able to wipe out a mass of Vertex alone in one fell swoop is another.
  • Itsuki pulling her weight and managing to hold her off on her own despite being the physically weakest member of the Hero Club is another one for her.
• Fairy Companion: Has one which was given to her by the rebelling gods.
• Good All Along: While part of it was because she was under the employ of the rebelling gods who summoned her, the only reason she was on the opposing side of the Heroes' in the first place was that she wanted to save them from their inevitable tragic fates in the real world. Once she's defeated, she willingly goes along with the Hero Club and even joins them come the second Main Story, Ishitsumugi no Shou.
• Heel–Face Turn: While she was never really evil in the first place, after her defeat at the hands of Yuna Yuki, she becomes allies with the Hero Club in Ishitsumugi no Shou.
• Heroic Lineage: Not through blood, but like Yuna Yuki she did a "reverse clap" at birth and was thus given the name Yuna, considered to be blessed by the spirit of Yuna Takashima who ultimately became part of the Shinju. Indeed, she too has pink hair and fights with a melee weapon like the other two Yunas.
• Hero-Worshipper: An interesting case towards Natsume. She admires her very much, calls her "Onee-sama", and when Natsume tries to capture her she says that she says that she's happy to be in her grasp. Despite this, she still is willing to attack Natsume and the other heroes. Justified since Natsume saved the Akamine family and if she hadn't, Yuna Akamine wouldn't have been born.
• Inexplicably Identical Individuals: She's the second Yuna lookalike in the series. Unlike the other two cheerfully energetic Yunas before her however, she's a bit more lax and has a much calmer way of speaking, and her smiles are mostly smirks.
• Kick the Dog: Downplayed since she gets thwarted before she could get the chance to do this, but these moments stand out:
  • She purposely misses out on facing the Heroes in one battle and heads straight to attack their headquarters where Hinata and Mito, two defenseless mikos, and the thought to be undeployable Sonoko were staying. Had Sonoko not been there and been given back the ability to transform into a Hero again by the Shinju, Akamine likely would have let the Vertex go wild on all three of them despite knowing that they're incapable of fighting back.
  • Akamine had every intention to give Itsuki a one-sided beatdown after she trapped and (temporarily) incapacitated the other Heroes, knowing full well how Itsuki was the physically weakest of them all, even telling her that straight to her face. Had Itsuki not upped her game and trained herself to become stronger beforehand, and had the other Heroes not have broken free, she likely would have pummeled her as Akamine still wanted to fight her after seeing through all of Itsuki's attacks.
• Ninja: Prior to her climactic showdown against the Heroes in Chapter 28, Akamine reveals that her family, along with the Miroku, fought against cults worshiping the Heavenly Gods that appeared seventy years after the events of NoWaYu. Although they weren't given the full powers of Heroes, they were given a measure of divine power needed to combat the cults, and were trained by fairies deep in the mountains. Akamine describes her family as one that wasn't afraid to do a little dirty work, and their family became known as the Taisha's enforcers. Akamine even compares her family to spies and ninjas.
• Oh, Crap!: Downplayed, but she really didn't expect Sonoko to wipe out the Vertexes she sent to attack Hinata and Mito at the Heroes' Club Room in a flash, especially since a) Sonoko couldn't transform before this, and b) even if she thought she could, Sonoko was the only Hero available at the time and was alone for the most part, thinking she'd be overwhelmed easily.
• Villain Decay: Itsuki having taken numerous levels in badass aside, the sheer laziness in Akamine's plan and subsequent humiliating curbstomp in Chapter 18 are a far cry from the mysterious evil hero whom needed grown up Sonoko to be dragged out of retirement to stop in her first big battle, though it should be noted that had the fight between her and Itsuki gone longer than it had before the other Heroes broke free of her trap, Akamine would've gained the upper hand eventually thanks to Itsuki's dwindling stamina and Akamine managing to see through her attacks after Itsuki's initial barrage. Then again, considering Akamine's true motives, she was probably holding herself back on purpose to give Itsuki a fighting chance.
  • Her scheme to get the sentinels to fight the heroes. While admittedly clever only works because her patsy is Miroku. Once Mebuki and the other girls show up the plan falls apart so fast that it would make Homura Akemi Rage Quit her attempts to Screw Destiny.
• Worthy Opponent: Renge proclaims her as her worthy rival and she reciprocates the gesture.
• Would Hurt a Child: She has no problem against fighting the grade school-aged WaSuYu team and Itsuki. In fact, she even had plans to give Itsuki a one-sided beatdown had Itsuki not trained herself beforehand to prevent this in one chapter in Hanayui no Kirameki.

Renge Miroku

A feisty and competitive Hero from the beginning of the Divine Era who is friends and comrades with Yuna Akamine. Though a little vain and somewhat conceited, she's a good girl at heart who truly cares for those around her. She's Yumiko Miroku's ancestor.

• Affectionate Nickname: Yuna Akamine calls her "Renchi", which to Renge's chagrin, sounds distressingly similar to "wrench".
• Chekhov's Gunman: Yumiko mentions multiple times in the Kusunoki Mebuki Is A Hero series that the Miroku family once fought alongside the Akamine family in ridding Shikkoku of the Vertex terrorist cult from long ago. She, along with the Akamine representative from back then, Yuna Akamine, were the ones responsible for quelling said cult.
• Famous Ancestor: Though the Miroku family has lost much of its prestige in the present, she's this to Yumiko.
• Ojou: She's the reason the Miroku were an esteemed family in the past. Similarly to her desendant, it shows in her mannersims and speech patterns.

Shizuka Kiryuu

Voiced by: Eriko Matsui

A miko assigned to Yuna Akamine and Renge Miroku during the beginning of the Divine Era. She might act rather highly towards her friends, but really does care for them. She likes analyzing people as a hobby.

Mebuki Kusunoki

Voiced by: Minami Tanaka

A stubborn, sharp-eyed girl from Kagawa Prefecture. She was one of the candidates to receive a full Hero terminal but was ultimately beaten out by Karin Miyoshi, the shame of which still burns. She is one of the thirty-two girls chosen by the Taisha to become Sentinels and to investigate the outside world.

• Big Sister Instinct: Towards Aya, despite not being related.
• Break the Haughty: Losing to Karin in the Hero selection process really did a number on her pride, though it's apparently not enough to make her humbler at the very least as she's bitter about this for most of the story.
• Broken Ace: Not being chosen as a Hero destroyed her pride, and ever since the anger over not being chosen as well as her essentially wasting the last two years of her life training has turned her into an outcast despite her talent.
• Character Development: By the end of KuMeYu she's become an able leader who commands the complete loyalty of the Sentinels, and she's gone from desperately wanting validation as a Hero to finding validation in her bond with her friends. At the end of KuMeYu Aki-sensei even tells her that if they re-did the first Hero selection, they would be unable to choose between her and Karin (although by this point Mebuki has no interest in becoming a Taisha Hero).
• Cloudcuckoolander: Her serious demeanor masks it really well, but her thought processes can be borderline nonsensical and odd sometimes.
• The Comically Serious: Has a tendency to take everything seriously to the point of comedy. Everything. Best shown in the Drama CDs where she gets involved in her team's silly antics outside missions without ever changing her monotone voice and demeanor no matter how hilariously ridiculous she'd sound with some of the things she's saying at times.
• Daddy's Girl: Her primary motivation in the beginning was to get her father to acknowledge her through her achievements. The day her usually distant father praised her for being selected as a Hero candidate was one of the happiest memories she's ever had.
• Defrosting Ice Queen: Though she likely won't admit it anytime soon, like with Karin, the longer she bonds with the Sentinels and Aya, the more her kinder side begins to show itself.
• Dual Wielding: She trains herself in this method, emulating Gin's (and by extension Karin's) fighting style. In Chapter 6 of KuMeYu she dual-wields her bayoneted rifles.
• Expy Coexistence: Her obvious parallels to Karin aside (see foil below), she serves as one to both Wakaba and Chikage from the Nogi Wakaba is a Hero series, being both the stern leader with the same steadfast attitude towards her duty and The Ace in her abilities like the former, while bearing the aloof, unsociable, and incredibly resentful personality of the latter.
• Foil: Unsurprisingly, since she was her main competitor in receiving Gin's Hero terminal from the Taisha, she serves as one to Karin. Though their backgrounds, personalities, and motivations are similar in many aspects, their attitude towards their duty is where they begin to differ. Despite possessing the same prideful, bordering arrogant, attitude Mebuki has, Karin was always a compassionate team player who would look out for her team, and in the past, her other Hero candidates, like a good comrade should, unlike Mebuki who valued her solitude and would constantly look down, and outright ignore her fellow competitors because of her single-minded devotion towards making herself stronger. This particular difference between them is likely what made Karin a worthier successor to Gin's terminal in both the Shinju's and the Taisha's eyes than Mebuki despite the latter's slightly better grades.
• Get a Hold of Yourself, Woman!: She suddenly attacks Karin when she sees her lacking her usual confidence when it comes to Yuna's curse. Karin defeating her in the duel that follows causes her to regain her resolve.
• The Leader: She's Sentinel 01 and the overall commander of the Sentinel force.
• Missing Mom: Her parents were divorced when she was very little and Mebuki's mother had zero involvement in raising her.
• No Social Skills: Her singleminded devotion to improving herself during the Hero selection process left her socially impaired.
• Not So Above It All: Her strange leaps of logic in normal situations is something worth raising a brow over.
• The Rival: She was Karin's during their Hero selection training days. Hanayui no Kirameki reveals that Karin fully acknowledges Mebuki's skills and is delighted whenever the opportunity to compete with Mebuki arises on occasion.
• The Stoic: While she can be emotionally aggressive at times, this is her default demeanor.
• "Well Done, Son" Guy: She greatly looks up to her father, who in turn doesn't pay much attention to her. The day she was chosen as a Hero candidate was the first time he ever complimented her.

Aya Kokudo

Voiced by: Yuuko Oono

A pure-hearted first-year middle-schooler from Kagawa Prefecture who was raised in a deeply religious family. As a Miko, or somebody who can hear the Shinju's voice, she was chosen to aid the thirty-two Sentinels as they investigate the outside world. She constantly worries about her teammates' personalities and tries to aid them as best she can.

• The Cutie: She's a cute and adorable sweetheart who loves everyone and everyone loves her back.
• The Heart: She tries to be the glue that holds the group together despite the other girls' personalities.
• Incorruptible Pure Pureness: She is able to retain her kind and gentle nature despite the Taisha limiting contact with her family and knowing the truth about the outside world.
• Nice Girl: She is incredibly kind and gentle to Mebuki and the rest of the Sentinels, so much so that despite Mebuki's stern and aloof personality (at least in the beginning), Aya is the only one she couldn't bring herself to be harsh towards and treats her well.
• Older Than They Look: She's a first year in middle school like Itsuki but looks much younger than she actually is. Mebuki initially mistakes her for an elementary school student.
• Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: In one of the Drama CD's, Suzume expresses doubt towards Aya's kindness and suggests to the others that she's using it to hide a darker side. The Sentinels follow Aya in order see if she is, with each of their discoveries making the possibility seem less and less. Their suspicions are finally proven wrong when they see her praying for the safety of all the Sentinels.

Yumiko Miroku

A proud third-year middle-schooler from Kouichi Prefecture. She loves to show off and prove her talent, but she often just messes things up for everyone. She was chosen by the Taisha to become one of the thirty-two Sentinels that investigate the outside world.

• Battle Cry: She often yells out "For the glory of the Miroku name!" or "By the honor of the Miroku house!" when she charges into battle.
• Butt-Monkey: Her ojou-sama antics are usually ignored by her friends, if not made fun of.
• Expy Coexistence: Of Fu, being the hammy senior and Cool Big Sis to the younger members of their respective teams, though she lacks Fu's status as the official leader.
• Hidden Depths: Underneath all her bravado and hammy tendencies lies a wise and mature individual who, while bitter about how the Taisha is treating her and the Sentinels, chooses to accept the way things are without complaining and calmly, yet sharply, berates Mebuki for taking out her bitterness over her situation towards the rest of them while wisely advising her at the same time, just like how an older sister would.
• Large Ham: Though not nearly as hammy as Fu, her somewhat formal yet loud way of speaking and her impulsive tendencies to declare herself "the proud daughter of the Miroku household" like some stage actor during battles and training makes her the Sentinels' resident one herself.
• Ojou: She desperately tries to be this. Her character introduction even describes her as one.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Skipjack tuna.
• Unknown Rival: To Mebuki. Mebuki only remembers her as the reckless upperclassman who was so-so in terms of skill and charged into practice fights shouting battle cries.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: Chapter 5 reveals she has this dynamic with Suzume.
• Worthy Opponent: Sees Mebuki as this. But while Mebuki eventually does acknowledge her merits, she never really goes around to consider her as a rival.
• You Remind Me of X: Yuna Akamine pretty much states that Yumiko reminds her of her old partner and best friend Renge Miroku. Justified, since Yumiko is Renge's direct descendant.

Shizuku Yamabushi

Voiced by: Shizuka Ishigami

A quiet and passive second-year middle-schooler from Tokushima Prefecture. She is extremly quiet and uncommunicative, and any attempt to talk with her often ends with just a nod. However, she has another, vicious personality which is brought out by battle. She was chosen by the Taisha to become one of the thirty-two Sentinels that investigate the outside world.

• Abusive Parents: Both of her parents were mentally unstable and physically abused her when she was a child. She tried to remain silent, but the abuse continued. Her other personality was created in order to cope with her violent home life.
• Adaptational Heroism: Since her conflict with Mebuki was left out in the adapted portions of the Sentinels' story in the The Great Full Bloom Chapter, SHIZUKU comes off as being much less belligerent in the anime compared to the light novels as her first proper appearance in the adaptation has her already complying to Mebuki's command. In the original work, she initially outright refused to cooperate with Mebuki and the others until Mebuki defeats her in a one on one between them to get her to listen.
• The Berserker: As SHIZUKU, her fighting style becomes more aggressive and downright violent.
• Defeat Means Friendship: Her aggressive side only agrees to listen to Mebuki's orders after Mebuki defeats her in a mock duel.
• Hair Antennae: Has two very tiny ones on top of her head.
• Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Her usual personality is quiet and timid, as reflected by her bangs concealing her right eye. When both eyes are uncovered, she turns into her other personality, which is violent and loud.
• Kill It Through Its Stomach: She is devoured by a Vertex in Chapter 2 but survives and destroys it from the inside.
• Last-Name Basis: Doesn't call anyone by their first names even after they've bonded.
• One Degree of Separation: She studied in the same school as the WaSuYu Hero trio, having known them as regular, if somewhat quirky, schoolmates of hers who were given an important duty by the Taisha. It's because of this that she managed to recognize that the masked priestess was Aki-sensei all along in the Drama CD, despite having noticed that she's changed after all this time.
• Parental Abandonment: Her parents committed double suicide before the beginning of the story.
• The Quiet One: She only communicates by nodding.
• Split Personality: Her normally quiet and submissive personality is replaced by a violent berserk mode when she's in danger, which is why she was ranked #9 despite not being a commander or not seeming particularly talented. It doesn't subside immediately after battle either, as she becomes extremely outspoken and refuses to listen to Mebuki's orders.
• Split-Personality Makeover: The best way to know if regular Shizuku or her other personality SHIZUKU is in control is through her bangs. If one bang covers one eye, it's regular Shizuku. If both eyes are left unconcealed by her bangs, it's SHIZUKU.

Suzume Kagajou

Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki

A pessimistic second-year middle-schooler from Ehime Prefecture. She has no self-confidence and has no idea why she was chosen to be a Hero candidate by the Taisha. She does, however, enjoy gossiping about others. She was chosen by the Taisha to become one of the thirty-two Sentinels that investigate the outside world.

• Character Catchphrase: Usually if not always spouts "Save me Mebu!" whenever the Sentinels are out on a mission.
• Cowardly Lion: She constantly whines to Mebuki about how she's too much of a coward to be a Sentinel and how she's going to quit, but while many girls do quit she never does and in fact performs quite well as a defender unit. In the flashback in Chapter 3 she unthinkingly tries to save Yuna from a dangerous fall (only for her to fall as well and only being saved by Gyuuki's fairy barrier), and in the same chapter she "accidentally" uses her shield to deflect a number of arrows from an incomplete Sagittarius Vertex to eliminate hordes of Stardust.
• Heroic Self-Deprecation: She constantly whines about how weak she is and begs for Mebuki to protect her despite the fact that she's shown to be capable of being a good defender.
• Refused by the Call: She was actually chosen to be part of a Hero Club at her school, only for the club president to disband it after the Shinju chose the Sanshu Hero Club over them. Suzume only learns about the Hero Club's true intentions (and how they had been Refused by the Call) after demanding answers from the former president, and while she was sad that she was losing her place to belong and upset at being lied to, she was also relieved that she wouldn't have to do something so dangerous.

Yoshika Hanamoto

A young Miko from the Kouchi region and one of Hinata's contemporaries alongside Masuzu Aki. She was the one who found Chikage during the Vertex disaster and selected her as a Hero.

• Big Sister Instinct: She's very protective of Chikage and is very sympathetic of her miserable past after learning more about her while she's under the Taisha's custody. She even gets angry on her behalf whenever she's badmouthed by anyone. Following Chikage's death and the Taisha's subsequent decision not to hold a funeral for her, she decided to take it upon herself to put her to rest in her own family's shrine.
• Determinator: Despite her aquaphobia, Yoshika steels herself and wades through heavily-flooded streets during a thunderstorm for the sake of reaching the recently deceased Chikage in her home to pay her last respects to her. Upon learning that Chikage's father refused to give his daughter a proper burial, she took it upon herself to carry her corpse while being beaten by Chikage's drunkard of a father (which she eventually fended off) mind you, with her to her home to finally lay her to rest like she deserved.
• Devoted to You: She's been devoted to Chikage ever since she met her on that fateful night during the Vertex disaster that struck Japan because Chikage is one of the very few people who actually got her name right the first time. Though they never actually got to interact with each other beyond their first meeting, Yoshika's devotion to her never wavered.
• Pronouncing My Name for You: Her given name can be alternately read as "Mika" in Japanese, and she mentions having to correct people multiple times that it's actually read as "Yoshika".
• The Quiet One: Her demeanour is by default calm and quiet.
• The Resenter: Initially, to Hinata, after she was selected and assigned to be the Heroes' official Miko, a position Yoshika highly coveted as it would have enabled her to be closer to Chikage. She eventually grew out of it over time just before the main story after witnessing Hinata's kindness and strength as a person firsthand as they gradually became friends, even admitting that she was the perfect person for the job.
• Stoic Spectacles: She wears glasses and they highlight her stoic and serious personality well.
• Undying Loyalty: To Chikage. She's willing to defy orders from the Taisha if it meant protecting her and her well-being.
• Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's aquaphobic, and her taking a hot bath in the first volume of the Uesato Hinata is a Miko series in lieu of the usual waterfall purification ritual the Mikos go through is actually a big step for her. So her resolve to wade through a heavily flooded street during a thunderstorm in an effort to reach the recently deceased Chikage and give her her final respects is a significant testament to her devotion for her.
• Waif Prophet: She's a Miko like Hinata and Masuzu so she can "hear" and perceive the oracles from the Shinju too.

Kumiko Karasuma

A retired Miko who claims to have discovered Yuna Takashima and selected her as a Hero. She serves as a mentor to the younger Mikos and as a priestess for the Taisha.

• Alliterative Name: Kumiko Karasuma.
• Labcoat of Science and Medicine: She wears a lab coat despite being an anthropology student and not workng in a lab, because it makes her look different from her classmates.
• Mentor Archetype: She's Hinata's, Masuzu's, and Yoshika's teacher and direct superior.
• Phony Psychic: She never really had Miko powers, but took Matsuri's place as Takashima's Miko for both selfish and selfless reasons— see Take Me Instead below.
• Take Me Instead: At the end of KaKuMi, she asks Hinata to trick the Taisha into thinking that she is Takashima's Miko instead of Matsuri, both so that Matsuri could live an ordinary life and so that she herself could live a life of excitement in the Taisha.
• Thrill Seeker: She pathologically hates boredom and routine, and toward the end of KaKuMi admits that she's been having the time of her life during the Vertex Disaster to the point of intentionally delaying her group's arrival in Shikoku.

Matsuri Yokote

A middle-schooler who awakened to her Miko powers during the Vertex disaster and found Yuna Takashima. Together with Takashima and Kumiko, she uses her powers to lead a bus of refugees to Shikoku.

• It's All My Fault: On the night of the disaster she felt a strange compulsion to go to a local shrine, and her parents went with her when they couldn't convince her to stay, leading to them being eaten by the Stardust. Matsuri blames herself for this and feels compelled to save a young girl when she goes missing from the refugee bus to "balance out the scales."
• Please, Don't Leave Me: Tries to convince Takashima to not join the Heroes and live a normal life with her. It doesn't work.
• The Resenter: Hates Kumiko for allowing Takashima to go with the Heroes, believing that she sent the girl to her death. She doesn't waver, even after Kumiko points out that Takashima was so selfless and heroic that she would be unhappy having the normal life that Matsuri wanted for her.
• Ridiculously Average Guy: She emphasizes over and over again that she's a completely ordinary, mediocre person, who only wants an average, uneventful life once they reach safety. This contrasts her with Takashima, who is perfectly willing and able to take on the horrors around them, and with Kumiko, who revels in the excitement of the apocalypse.
• Waif Prophet: She has the powers of a Miko, and uses them to guide a group of refugees to safety. However, thanks to Kumiko making a deal with Hinata, Matsuri doesn't join the Taisha as a Miko and instead goes on to live an ordinary life of a picture book artist.
• Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Seeing her parents slaughtered by the Stardust left her with a crippling fear of blood. Seeing as how they're traveling through the apocalypse, it becomes a problem several times.

Yuuna Yuzuki

A listless girl born in the second generation of the Divine Era. Having performed the reverse-clap at birth, she was given the name Yuuna, but hates the expectations that are associated with it, and wants to find the power to live as her own person. She's a great athlete, though she denies it.

• Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She has black hair and is both quiet and somewhat distant, not having any close friends until Lily comes along (and even then, it takes her a while to admit to such).
• Cruel to Be Kind: Realizing that Lily will just keep trying to reach the wall in her canoe until she drowns, Yuzuki decides to just take Lily's chainsaw and cut the canoe in half. It reduces Lily to tears and strains their friendship for a while.
• Cutting the Knot: While Lily's plans for getting past the wall all centered on finding some sort of gap in it or bypassing it, Yuzuki's solution is ultimately to simply climb over it. By far, it's the solution that comes the closest to working.
• Do Not Call Me "Paul": She hates her given name, "Yuuna," as she feels as though she can't live up to the expectations placed upon someone with that name, and simply goes by "Yuzuki" instead. When Wakaba tells her how she and even her namesake Yuuna Takashima felt powerless at times, Yuzuki softens up to her given name a bit.
• Heroic Lineage: She performed the reverse-clap at birth, and was thus given the name "Yuuna", although her generation had no need of Heroes. In All's Right With the World, its revealed that Yuzuki's mother had planned on naming her "Yuuna" from the start, albeit with different characters.
• Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: She's the Dark Feminine to Lily's Light Feminine. Yuzuki is an Aloof Dark-Haired Girl, contrasting Lily who is a lively, charismatic Chuunibyou.
• Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: She was the star player on her elementary school's basketball team, and was hyped up by those around her due to being a Yuuna, but during a larger tournament her team got crushed in the first round. This humbled Yuzuki greatly, and from then on she decided to disregard her name.
• Only in It for the Money: She only agrees to help Lily when Lily offers her 1,500 yen an hour, and throughout the story insists that she's only hired help. However, she quickly becomes invested in spending time with Lily.
• Secret-Keeper: She, along with Lily, are the only ones who have seen the world beyond the wall besides the Taisha.
• Suspiciously Specific Denial: She's not a member of Lily's Hero Club, she's only helping out for pay.
• Taking the Heat: When they're finally caught by Wakaba and Hinata, Yuzuki tries to claim that everything was her idea and that she had forced Lily to come with her. It doesn't work, but Lily appreciates the attempt.

Yuuna Lilienthal "Lily" Fuyou

Charismatic and good at reading people, she now spreads conspiracy theories about what lies behind the Shinju's barrier, and forms a "Hero Club" with Yuzuki to go beyond the wall. Her mother was an American on a trip to Shikoku who was separated from her family when the Vertex attacked.

• Beneath the Mask: Beneath her quirky, cheerful facade is a lonely, angry girl bitter over the discrimination her mother faced and who can't accept that the Taisha get to decide the status quo without anyone knowing the truth.
• But Not Too Foreign: She's half-American and half-Japanese.
• Chuunibyou: She loves using overly-dramatic speech
• Conspiracy Theorist: She doesn't believe that the Heroes or the Stardust existed and thinks that the Taisha is hiding the truth from them. She also runs a blog where other conspiracy theorists gather.
• Didn't Think This Through: To prepare for their first meeting, Lily climbed up to a mountain shrine and gave Yuzuki a riddle to figure out what she was. However, Lily eventually realizes that she's too scared to climb back down and is on the verge of tears by the time Yuzuki finds her.
• Doing In the Wizard: She believes that everything the Taisha attributes to the Shinju has a scientific explanation.
• Former Child Star: She went into showbiz to earn money to help her sick mother. However, upon realizing that her mother's illness was terminal, she left the industry to spend as much time with her as possible.
• Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: She's the Light Feminine to Yuzuki's Dark Feminine. Lily is a lively, charismatic Chuunibyou, contrasting the Aloof Dark-Haired Girl Yuzuki.
• Phenotype Stereotype: She's half-American and has blonde hair, although there are plenty of other blonde characters in the franchise without foreign ancestry. She also gets cravings for hamburgers at times, which she attributes to her American heritage, though Yuzuki points out that hamburgers are already popular enough in Shikoku.

Others

Taisha

A powerful religious organization which oversees the worship of the Shinju and employs the Heroes and the Miko who defend it. Their word carries more weight than the Prime Minister's, and for all intents and purposes they are the government of Shikoku. They act as intermediaries between the Heroes and Shinju, providing them with information and other aid throughout the story.

• All for Nothing: While it is true that the higher ups achieved instrumentality and escaped all punishment and retribution while leaving the rest of humanity to die. The Shinju is dead, the Celestial gods have been badly crippled, and now their organization has been exposed and they are nothing more than a field of wheat at the mercy of whomever finds them.
• Ambiguously Evil: Averted in that they're ultimately presented as massively incompetent than actually evil. They ultimately want to protect humanity, but Sonoko's "The Reason You Suck" Speech in Washio Sumi's bonus chapter makes them realize that they massively screwed themselves over by keeping secrets from the Heroes.
• The Faceless: Their members are always seen wearing masks in the present day. However, the first incarnation of the Taisha seen in NoWaYu didn't wear masks, and neither do the new Taisha led by Sonoko.
• Heroes "R" Us: Aside from giving the girls vital information, they also provide for Fu's and Itsuki's living expenses and even give the girls a trip to the beach in Episode 7. The Taisha would do anything for the Heroes, seeing as how they worship them as gods.
• Meaningful Name: Taisha (大赦) means "Amnesty". The original Taisha in Nogi Wakaba used the characters for "Great Shrine", but it changed the meaning of its name as part of a reform effort by Wakaba and Hinata which would trick the heavenly gods into thinking that humanity had submitted.
• Well-Intentioned Extremist: In the end, all they want to do is keep the Shinju (and by extension, the world) safe. However, they have some rather questionable methods such as hiding the after-effects of the Super Mode from the girls they employ to protect humanity, though it's heavily implied that they did this to spare the girls' feelings.

The Shinju

A giant tree that appeared during the crisis in the Anno Domini era and saved humanity from the virus that plagued much of the world. Ever since, the survivors of Shikoku Island have worshipped it as a god. It now summons Heroes to defend it from the Vertex that attack it; if even one manages to reach the Shinju, both it and the world will be destroyed.

• All Your Powers Combined: The Shinju is comprised of the myriad earth gods of Japan, who sided with humanity when the heavenly gods decided to purge mankind, as well as some rebellious heavenly gods. Yuna Takashima becomes one of those gods at the end of NoWaYu.
• Big Good: They are the ones worshiped by the Taisha and the ones empowering the Heroes to protect Humanity from the Vertex. It is their barrier that keeps the bulk of them out.
• Blue-and-Orange Morality: Sonoko speculates that although it is a god that's benevolent to humanity, it probably thinks in ways that humans can't comprehend which is why it requires sacrifices from the Heroes who protect it.
• Heroic Sacrifice: Uses all of its remaining power to power Yuna's final transformation and to restore the world when Yuna defeats the heavenly gods, after which it crumbles away into dust.
• Oh, Crap!: According to the writers, this was basically the Shinju's reaction to Togo's rebellion, which helped prompt it to change the Hero System.
• Vampiric Draining: Not only through the Mankai/Sange (where it effectively takes part of the girls' bodies in exchange for a power surge), the last episode shows it absorbing power from the Leo-class Vertex that went down right next to it, finally giving it a decent source of power and resulting in the more favorable situation from the epilogue.
• World Tree: Appears as this in the Jukai. It turns out that this is more literal; the Shinju forms a barrier around Shikoku, outside of which is nothing but a blazing hellscape.

The Vertexes

Strange monsters that come from the outside world and the main threat of the story. They are said to be the enemies of the Shinju and humanity. Their goal is to kill the Shinju, and in doing so, to destroy the world.

• All Your Powers Combined: Leo Starcluster
• Attack Its Weak Point: They are able to regenerate any damage they take. The only way to actually kill them is to expose their "soul" and destroy it.
• Beware My Stinger Tail: The Scorpio Vertex has a long tail with a stinger that injects a very powerful venom. Anzu and Tamako learn firsthand what getting stung by it feels like and the results aren't pretty.
• Blow You Away: The Libra Vertex is shown in Washio Sumi Chapter to be able to create tornadoes by spinning.
• Brown Note: The Taurus Vertex can produce an extremely loud sound with its bell that can make the Heroes feel sick and paralyzed.
• Eldritch Abomination: Even when compared to most Kaiju, they all have a very outworldly look with just a vague resemblance to the sign of the zodiac constallation they're named after. The fact that their bodies seem to turn into sand after dying only adds to their weirdness.
• Energy Ball: Leo's main type of attack.
• Fragile Speedster: The Gemini Vertex are very small, not much taller than the Heroes, and don't seem to have much attack power, but they're extremely fast and agile, effortlessly dodging the lasers from Togo's Mankai. If it hadn't been for Itsuki's Mankai, it would've destroyed the Shinju by itself.
• Fusion Dance: The Vertexes can fuse with Leo to form the Leo Startcluster. It's later revealed that the Stardusts can do this too in order to make the larger types of Vertexes.
• Hydra Problem: When cut into pieces, the Aries Vertex can regenerate from each piece to form more Aries Vertexes, but in reality, there is only one "true" Aries and the others are just imitations.
  • A more straight example is the serpent-like Vertex from the Nogi Wakaba Light Novel, which has a similar ability, but unlike Aries, every single body is considered a real one.
• Large and in Charge: The Leo Vertex, being 100 meters tall, towers above the other Vertexes and seems to act as their field commander when present.
• Making a Splash: The Aquarius Vertex seems to be mostly made of water and shoots giant balls of its liquid in an attempt to drown its target. According to Gin, it has an Oolong-like flavor. Washio Sumi Chapter also shows it being capable of firing beams made of high-pressure water.
• Mooks: The Stardust, the smallest and simplest known type of Vertex. They are relatively easy to destroy and have the ability to fuse into the bigger and more complex types of Vertexes.
• Power Trio: The Cancer, Sagittarius and Scorpio Vertexes seem to work together as a team in the Washio Sumi Light Novel and in Yuki Yuna is a Hero.
• The Psycho Rangers: Each of them seem to be in some way the evil counterparts of the Washio Sumi trio of Heroes. Cancer is Gin's counterpart^*(the tank) , Saggitarius is Sumi's^*(long range attacker and support) and Scorpio is Sonoko's^*(mid-range attacker).
• Rain of Arrows: The Sagittarius Vertex can shoot a large amount of energy arrows from one of its mouths that can be used offensively on the enemy, but it can also be used on other Vertexes to help them heal faster.
• Sea Monster: Pisces is this, only it "swims" through the ground.
• Spectacular Spinning: Libra can spin at high velocity, both as a defense mechanism, and to reflect enemy projectiles. Aries' soul does this too to defend itself when it is exposed.
• Stellar Name: Each Vertex is named after one of zodiac constallations.
• Ultimate Life Form: The Vertexes are described as the apex of all life forms created by the gods for the purpose exterminating humanity.
• The Unfought: Leo in Nogi Wakaba turns out to be simply too powerful for the surviving Heroes to take on, leading to the Taisha negotiating a ceasefire.
• Zerg Rush: The Stardust main tactic in combat is to rush in large numbers towards their enemies and try to eat them.

The Heavenly Gods

The collection of gods who reign in the heavens, they wished to destroy humanity while the gods of the land (who would later become the Shinju) wanted to protect humanity. They are the creators of the Vertex and are responsible for turning the world into the sea of flames it currently is.

• All Your Powers Combined: They can use the powers of all of the Vertex, from firing Sagittarius' arrows to summoning multiple Scorpio tails to creating Leo's Stardust rifts.
• Big Bad: They are the force behind all of the conflict in the series.
• Greater-Scope Villain: Until Hero Chapter and the beginning of the Nogi Wakaba prequel series, the heavenly gods don't have a direct hand in opposing the Heroes and destroying the remainder of humanity. Instead, the Vertex they sent out do that job for them in their stead. Even then, they are the main cause and force of conflict in the entire franchise.
• Jerkass Gods: Besides subjecting humanity to near extinction for something a select number of humans did that angered them, there's their method of sending Vertex to brutally massacre anyone and anything that comes in their path, and then there's the extremely painful curse they subjected Yuna to as retribution for saving her friend from their wrath.
• Light Is Not Good: They represent the Sun and attack with fire and blazing beams of light.
• Sinister Sentient Sun: They are associated with the sun, and when they manifest in the human world their core takes the form of a mini-sun in the sky.
