SEES/The Shadow Operatives & Affiliates

The Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad is an organization originally sponsored by the Kirijo Group to investigate the Shadow nest, Tartarus, which appeared every night when the Dark Hour struck, replacing Gekkoukan High. After the defeat of Nyx, Mitsuru Kirijo would go on to found the Shadow Operatives, a secret government organization dedicated to eradicating Shadows.

    General
  • Adults Are Useless: A justified and downplayed example. Shido has been blackmailing them into staying out of Tokyo so that they can't interfere with his plans, and dismantled the Shadow Operatives' division in Tokyo before he started them to be certain. It's stated they would like to help more, but due to said blackmail, the current members of the Shadow Operatives (meaning several of the former SEES members, Yu, and Naoto) can't go to Tokyo without Shido releasing his blackmail on Mitsuru - and the rest of SEES and the Investigation Team have their own lives they can't drop out of that easily.
  • Arch-Enemy: Shido has been blackmailing them for years, tried to have Aigis and Labrys confiscated, likely so that he could reprogram them or take them apart for his own usage, and kidnapped Ken to try to blackmail the other Shadow Operatives into staying out of his plans for good and has stated he plans to dismantle their entire organization after becoming Prime Minister. The only group that might have more of a reason to hate Shido is the Phantom Thieves.
  • Family of Choice: Their parents and relatives are typically either dead, Abusive Parents, don't exist in the case of Aigis or Labrys, or in the case of Fuuka's parents are estranged (ironically, Yukari's mother seems to have started fixing her relationship with Yukari). And as far as they're concerned, they have each other (and the Phantom Thieves/Investigation Team), and that's all they need.
  • Older and Wiser: Overall, they're much more levelheaded than their incarnations in Persona 3 and Arena/Ultimax.
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: As stated above, Shido makes it hard for the Shadow Operatives to get involved. Indirect assistance, intelligence (they were the ones who told the Thieves that Shido was behind the mental shutdowns and Wakaba's death), and emotional support are something they can and have given to the Thieves, but it's all they can offer at the moment.
  • True Companions: Bickering and Snark-to-Snark Combat amongst them aside, the Shadow Operatives truly care for one another and will back each other up whenever there's trouble.

Warning! Spoilers for Chapter 40

The protagonist and main narrator of the story. At the beginning, he is a third-year and at the cusp of turning 18. Due to circumstances barring the Shadow Operatives from action in Tokyo, Minako gets the idea of sending Ken to Tokyo, as he left the organization over four years ago. His original purpose was to keep tabs on the Phantom Thieves but due to circumstances, he ends up joining them.

  • Academic Athlete: Ken played soccer for three years and is consistently in the top ten in his grade at Gekkoukan. He gave up soccer a year ago though because he wanted to focus on his studies.
  • Actor Allusion: Word of God has stated that Ken/Ace's voice claim is Yuri Lowenthal, specifically his Marth voice from Fire Emblem Warriors. This would have made it the second time Lownthal voiced a member of SEES, and the third time he had a major role in a Persona game.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Downplayed. After Ken re-awakens to his Persona in the Metaverse, Kala-Nemi gains access to the Kouha line of spells as well as Gun-type attacks that he didn't have in his original game.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: He tends to give Futaba awkward head-pats as his way of showing affection to her. On the flip side, the members of SEES tend to enjoy ruffling his hair, much to his annoyance.
  • Arm Cannon: Tyr, Ken's third Persona, has one, probably to play with how Tyr ended up losing one hand to Fenrir.
  • Ascended Extra: In a way, since Ken is the second to last member to join SEES. Here, he is the protagonist of the story.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: While Makoto is the tactician of the Phantom Thieves, Ken is an analytic thinker as well. The only reason he technically wins his fight against Akechi is that he fought smartly than relying on his battle prowess.
  • Babies Ever After: The one-shot Twenty Years Later reveals that not only have he and Makoto become Happily Married (with him taking Makoto's maiden name of "Niijima" rather than her becoming "Makoto Amada") but they have recently given birth to a son, Riku.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Is still considered this by his Shadow Operative seniors even though he's already a third-year high-school student, much to Ken's dismay. But he breaks out of this by Chapter 43, when he proves himself to be able to manage his own by defeating Mitsuru in a sparring session.
  • Badass Cape: Ken sports one as Ace.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Ken is this as Ace.
  • Badass in Distress: Gets captured by Shido's men after the Casino heist.
  • Bad Liar: Downplayed, but Shinjiro remarks that Ken is terrible at hiding how he feels.
    • Zigzagged a bit, however. Ken was able to hide the truth from the Phantom Thieves, even though he spent a month working with them without them catching onto the truth. Additionally, Ken was able to keep a decent poker face with Shido, even tricking him into bragging about his hand in the mental shutdowns and psychotic breakdowns.
  • Becoming the Mask: Ken joins the Phantom Thieves due to several reasons, but as he spends more time with them, he slowly aligns with their ideals, leading to him being torn between the Shadow Operatives and the Phantom Thieves.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Ken takes on this role with the Phantom Thieves, being the second oldest member. He's this especially with Ren and Futaba.
  • Big "WHAT?!": He gives one over text messaging when he learns that Shido was behind Ren being put on probation.
  • Birds of a Feather: Has this with Makoto. They both have a strong sense of justice, smart, and a bit socially awkward. When they meet, they start getting along very quickly.
    • Non-romantic version with Futaba. They're both the youngest members of the team (Ken with SEES and Futaba with the Phantom Thieves), love Feathermen, their mothers' deaths had deeply traumatized them, and suffered from being suicidal at one point. It's no surprise that Ken takes on an almost older brother role to Futaba.
  • Bishōnen Line: Nemesis and Kala-Nemi look like abstract metal sculptures rather than anything human. By contrast, Ken's third-tier Persona, Tyr, is a more humanoid figure clad in armor and a cape.
  • Blade Lock: Ken uses his spear's shaft to block Akechi's blade during their duel.
  • Butt-Monkey: Ken tends to be picked on, probably because it's so easy to rib him.
  • Cain and Abel: He's shaping out to be the Abel to Akechi's Cain since they're cousins.
  • Character Development: Due to Ken receiving a dosage of character development in Persona 3, he is more well-adjusted than the rest of the Phantom Thieves. However, he does slowly grow to become more independent. After he's revealed to be a Persona-user to the Phantom Thieves at the destruction of Kaneshiro's Palace, he worries about Mitsuru's reaction. But at the end of Okumura's arc, Ken fights Mitsuru's decision to bring him back to Port Island.
  • Character Tics: Ken has a tendency to blow his bangs out of his face when he's feeling frustrated or annoyed.
  • Chick Magnet: He tends to attract the attention of the girls of Port Island as well as Shujin, much to his dismay. Rise also teases Yu of how even Nanako had a Precocious Crush on Ken before.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Ken makes an effort to rein in Futaba's cavalier attitude about hacking and violating people's privacy. He talks her into deactivating the bug in Leblanc and chides her for casually hacking Ren's phone.
  • Code Name: When Ken joins the Phantom Thieves, he's given the codename Ace. See Meaningful Name for why.
  • Comfort Food: For Ken, it's omurice, as it was one of his mother's favorite recipes. Shinjiro even makes him some after Ken goes into Futaba's Palace, knowing that Ken may be hit hard with bad memories.
  • The Comically Serious: Some of the humor comes from the very serious Ken dealing with the more zany members of the Phantom Thieves.
  • Coming of Age Story: This story is essentially Ken's.
  • Commonality Connection: Ken uses his and Futaba's mutual love for Feathermen to connect with her when she was still struggling to interact with the Phantom Thieves. They develop a sibling-like relationship due to how they understand what it's like to struggle with suicidal feelings, as well as dealing with their mothers' abrupt deaths.
  • Conflicting Loyalties: Part of the Futaba arc has Ken feeling guilty due to how the Phantom Thieves treat him as one of their own but he's not being entirely truthful with them.
  • Cool Uncle: Ken is this to Minato and Yukari's twin children. It can also be assumed that he will become this to Minako and Akihiko's daughter as well.
  • Covert Pervert: Ken is implied to have shades of this. During Makoto's awakening, he's seen to be checking out Makoto, noting how toned her body is. Though he quickly mentally smacks himself for it, not wanting to be like Junpei.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Played for Laughs. After Ken and Makoto become an Official Couple, we found out that Ken is easily jealous when another guy gets too close to Makoto. When Sae's cognitive version of Akechi flirts with Makoto, Ken snaps and ends up punching the fake detective out cold.
  • Custom Uniform:
    • Ken's winter uniform includes pure black pants akin to the Gekkoukan uniform's, and he wears an orange sweater vest underneath his blazer.
    • His Phantom Thief outfit includes Gekkoukan's blazer acting as a tuxedo jacket.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Ken is very snarky, both in his dialogue and narration. Fuuka remarks that this is due to Shinjiro.
  • Defiant Captive: Ken had his fair share of barbs towards Shido during his captivity in Chapter 40.
  • Discard and Draw: When Ken reawakens Kala-Nemi, he loses his Electric skills but gains access to Gun skills, as well as the damage-dealing Kou- line of Bless skills to go alongside his Hama- skills.
  • Everyone's Baby Brother: As a result of him being The Baby of the Bunch, S.E.E.S./the Shadow Operatives treat Ken like their kid brother, much to his annoyance. When Ken gets kidnapped by Shido, their response is to storm the place where Ken is held while throttling any goon that gets in their way.
  • Exact Words: Ken resorted to using half-truths when he initially hid his identity as a Shadow Operative from the Phantom Thieves.
  • First Kiss: Has his with Makoto in Chapter 31 "The School Festival".
  • Generation Xerox: At one point, Minako compares Ken's chick magnet status to her husband, Akihiko's. This is notable, given how Ken used to look up to Akihiko. And like Akihiko, he falls for the female second-in-command of their Persona-user group.
    • Ken is also described to greatly resemble his mother Hikari physically. He also reflects his mother in that he went through hardship but he ultimately gets through it, looking to the future. He also has a high school romance, much like his parents.
  • Guilt by Association: Upon discovering his relation to Akechi, Ken becomes horrified that he shares the same blood as a murderer. He wonders whether Haru and Futaba, whose parents Akechi murdered, would project the blame on him as well. Fortunately, they don't.
  • The Gunslinger: Kala-Nemi has gun attacks. Though curiously, Ken doesn't use his actual gun all that much. Then again...
  • Happily Adopted: Has been in Shinjiro's custody since shortly after Ultimax. He cares for Shinjiro very much but secretly worries about burdening his guardian.
  • Happily Married: Very heavily implied in the one-shot, A Future In Her Eyes, as when Makoto catches Ann's bouquet, Ren proceeds to throw the garter directly at him, much to his chagrin.
Ken: [sputtering, as he pulls off the garter] What the hell, Ren?!
Ren: [smirks] Now it's your turn!
    • Outright confirmed in the one-shot Twenty Years Later, where Ken and Makoto have not only gotten hitched but had a child together, a boy named Riku.
  • Healing Hands: Ken has trained himself to channel his healing magic in the real world and heals his friends from time to time.
  • Henpecked Husband: If their interactions as a couple thus far and the ending of the one-shot A Future In Her Eyes, are taken into consideration, then there's a high probability that Ken will ultimately become this to Makoto.
    • As of Twenty Years Later, Ken has very much fallen into this category.
  • Hereditary Hairstyle: Ken's mentioned to have the same bangs as his mother.
  • History Repeats: The second oldest member of the team sacrifices himself to save the youngest member. The description fits the October 4th incident, as well as the aftermath of the casino palace.
  • I Owe You My Life: Ken mentions a few times that SEES had literally saved his life and is deeply loyal to his friends due to this.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: He tries to persuade the Shadow Operatives and the Phantom Thieves to abandon their rescue operation, saying that they would only risk getting screwed over by Shido if they get caught, and instead focus on saving Ren. Unsurprisingly, none of them listen.
  • Jack of All Trades: Ken is mentioned to fill many roles in battle. He's a Combat Medic and is both adept in magic and gun attacks.
  • Justice Will Prevail: Ken has a strongly defined sense of justice, and it's the start of why he begins to doubt his friends' opinions of the Phantom Thieves.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: During the Futaba arc, he starts to have doubts about not being entirely honest with the Phantom Thieves.
  • Last-Name Basis: During the Kaneshiro arc, Ken solely refers to the Phantom Thieves very politely, using "[surname]-san". But after a conversation with the Phantom Thieves at the end of the Kaneshiro arc, Makoto insists on dropping it and just call her by her given name. Ken gives in and in turn, gives her permission to use his first name instead of "Amada-kun". It takes a little longer to convince him to drop the last name basis with the rest of the Phantom Thieves, though. Ken also pointedly calls Akechi "Akechi-san".
  • Light 'em Up: Ken and Kala-Nemi use Kou- and Hama- skills, and Ken becomes the team's Bless specialist.
  • Luminescent Blush: Ken easily blushes when it comes to Makoto.
  • Meaningful Name: Ken's codename Ace. The in-story reason why Ace is chosen for Ken is due to Ken having more experience as a Persona-user than the rest of the Phantom Thieves. But Ace also refers to the title, Ace in the Hole. Ace in the hole means a hidden advantage kept into reserve until needed. This reflects how Ken was not called into action until a hidden player is needed.
    • Ken's surname Amada means "light field". He has Bless skills.
  • Momma's Boy: Ken adores his mother and still holds her in high regard, even though it's been 9 years since her death.
  • More Dakka: Kala-Nemi can now fire bullets from the circular markings on his upper arms. Alongside Haru, Ken is the only non-Wild Card Persona user with access to Gun skills.
  • New Transfer Student: Ken transfers to Shujin at the beginning of the Kaneshiro arc. To be specific, his first day happens to be the day Makoto confronts the Phantom Thieves and demands that they target Kaneshiro.
  • No Guy Wants to Be Chased: Ken hates the attention he gets from girls. Though he later clarifies to Ren that he specifically dislikes that the girls' interest in him is so shallow.
    • He has no problem when Makoto confesses to him.
  • Oblivious to Love: Ken was really oblivious to Makoto's poor attempts to flirt with him.
  • Older and Wiser: Ken has come a long way from being The Baby of the Bunch amongst his S.E.E.S. colleagues, being a much more mature and level-headed person.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: Has a tendency of being passive-aggressive, especially towards people he dislikes. When he gets annoyed with his friends, he's just flat-out sarcastic.
  • Precocious Crush: He used to have a crush on Minako when he was younger though he’s already over it by the time the story starts.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: Ends up doing this after he officially awakens to his third Persona, Tyr, and they escape from Shido. Akihiko lampshades this, saying he's surprised it didn't happen earlier.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In canon, there is nothing that indicates that Ken and Akechi are related outside of a passing resemblance. Chapter 37 reveals that they're cousins.
  • Scars Are Forever: Over the course of his time in S.E.E.S., Ken has sustained various battle scars.
  • Self-Deprecation: Played for Laughs. Upon reawakening his Persona with a revamped skillset, he laments how it could have been useful years ago considering how often his Light Spells would miss.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: This is the basis of his Ace outfit.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: When Shinjiro teases Ken about the idea of him having a romantic interest in Makoto, Ken gets this reaction.
  • Spanner in the Works: Ken's affiliation with the Phantom Thieves, unfortunately, results in the fallout of the Casino Heist not going as smoothly as it did in canon. Shido had arranged for Ken's capture alongside Ren, meaning that the Phantom Thieves, Investigation Team, and the Shadow Operatives have to rescue both of them.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Ken ends up following around the Phantom Thieves a lot during the Kaneshiro arc, as that's the whole reason he came to Tokyo to begin with. Though he does end up dating Makoto eventually.
  • Straight Man: Ken is usually forced to play this role with the more zany members of the Phantom Thieves, in particular to Ren's Wise Guy.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Downplayed, but Ken shocks Haru when he knocks out Cognitive Akechi with a single punch.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Downplayed. Ken is the main character and POV of the story, but he's still a supporting member of the Phantom Thieves to Ren's role as the team's Wild Card and leader.
  • Survivor's Guilt: Due to the death of his mother and Shinjiro's near-death experience, both a result of protecting him, Ken has deep-rooted guilt of having people risking their lives to save him. In Chapter 41, these feelings were compounded by Shido's Breaking Speech and the drugs in his system, and he tries to persuade Morgana not to rescue him.
  • Take Me Instead: Offers himself to Shido's men in exchange for Futaba after the Casino Heist. However, it turns out that Shido was targeting Ken from the start to use as leverage against Mitsuru.
  • Tarot Motifs: While his true Arcana is Justice, Ken's Confidant Arcana is Adjustment, the equivalent to Justice in the Thoth deck.
  • Team Dad: Ken plays this to the Phantom Thieves, often looking out for their well-being. Fittingly enough, his girlfriend, Makoto, acts as the Team Mom. Played for Laughs in one particular scene during the Phantom Thieves' Beach Episode before learning the Awful Truth behind Ken's Dark and Troubled Past.
Ken: So I'm the dad now, am I? *crosses arms over chest* Then you're both grounded.
    Yusuke and Futaba: WHAT?!
  • Took a Level in Badass: Ken is no longer a little kid and he's described to one of the more versatile fighters.
    • But that being said, unlike most of the former members of SEES, he wasn't able to summon his Persona in the real world without an Evoker. In Chapter 40, however, he finally manages this feat. To top it off, Kala-Nemi transforms into a new Persona, Tyr, due to his resolve.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Ken's favorite food is still omurice. Ken's rank 3 mentions that Shinjiro worked hard to figure out a recipe that mimicked Ken's mother's.

    Shinjiro Aragaki

Shinjiro Aragaki

Arcana: V. Hierophant

Persona: Aeneas

Weapons: Battleaxes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinji_3.png

Alive due to Minako developing her Social Link with him and saving him from Takaya's attempted murder, Shinjiro is a couple of months shy of turning 25 at the beginning of the story. He is now Ken's guardian and currently dating Fuuka. When Ken accepts the mission that Minako offers him, he insists on coming too.

  • Adaptational Badass: In canon, Shinjiro's Persona Castor never evolved. Here, it's evolved to its second stage, Aeneas.
  • Adoptive Peer Parent: Shinjiro is only 7 years older than Ken, but he's been Ken's guardian since Shinjiro was 21 (and Ken was 14). It's been implied that people often question how he's Ken's guardian.
  • Badass Longcoat: Is still described to don a long coat in the fall and winter.
  • The Bartender: Shinjiro is mentioned to work two jobs, but the main focus is his job at Crossroads as a bartender.
  • Berserk Button: He gets visibly annoyed whenever he hears that someone has a poor diet, best seen with his reaction upon hearing about Yusuke having to live off beansprouts.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Has this to Ken, but unlike in Persona 3, this developed from Shinjiro developing an attachment to Ken.
  • Brutal Honesty: Shinjiro does not hesitate to mince words.
  • Cool Uncle: Again, to Kaito and Miyuki. They call him Uncle Shinji, a nickname that few people use. He presumably will become this to Akihiko and Minako's daughter as well.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Shinjiro is quite sarcastic. Though given with who he has to put up with, it may be warranted.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Shinjiro has a Persona, but he's more than capable to hold his own in a physical fight.
  • Epic Fail: He ends up blurting out his plans to propose to Fuuka right in front of her as he's going through his Inner Monologue. She does accept his proposal, but Shinjiro is still embarrassed with how it turned out.
  • Face of a Thug: Ren, the brave leader of the Phantom Thieves, quietly admits in his narration that he's scared of Shinjiro.
  • First-Name Basis: He's on a first-name basis with most of SEES, save for Yukari and Junpei, since he's the least close to them.
  • Foil: He's this to Sae.
    • Shinjiro is blunt with a Face of a Thug. He excels in cooking, a traditionally feminine art. He chooses to become Ken's guardian by choice. He also openly bickers with Ken and their relationship is leagues better than what it was in Persona 3 even though Ken has insecurities about being a burden to him. Shinjiro puts his friends above his career, telling Ken that he would delay his career for Ken's sake if given the choice.
    • Sae, on the other hand, is an elegant Hello, Attorney!, whose career choice is usually pursued by men. She suddenly had to step up to take care of her younger sister. Sae is distant from Makoto and very focused on her job. These differences are probably why Sae and Shinjiro don't particularly get along, even though their respective charges eventually fall for each other.
  • Henpecked Husband: He bends to Fuuka's will quite easily, even though Fuuka is rather frail and gentle.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Shinjiro still has trouble showing that he cares sometimes. Ren also teases him about it in Ken's rank 9, saying that there's nothing wrong with showing Ken how much he cares.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: The Huge Guy to Fuuka's Tiny Girl.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Shinjiro gets very frustrated after Ken admits that he has feelings for Makoto but refuses to tell her out of an overblown fear of being rejected. He internally wishes he had some alcohol multiple times during the conversation.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While everyone else thought that he was going too far, Shinjiro was right in calling out Sae when she got upset over Makoto's secret relationship with Ken. He points out that given how strained the sisters' relationship has been, Makoto can't really be blamed for hiding it from Sae.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Once Shinjiro pushes past his despair after Ken has been kidnapped, he swears that he's going to kill Shido for pulling this. Akihiko has to snap him out of his rage.
  • Last-Name Basis: On the flip side, he still refers to the Investigation Team by their surnames. He does this with the Phantom Thieves too, which makes Makoto worry that he doesn't like her after she and Ken start dating.
  • Manly Tears: He sheds some after they manage to successfully rescue Ken from Shido. Akihiko notes that Shinjiro hasn't cried since the funeral of Akihiko's younger sister, Miki—which happened 17 years ago.
  • Papa Wolf: In one of the early chapters, he beats up one of Kaneshiro's men for threatening Ken.
  • Promotion to Parent: Shinjiro has been Ken's guardian for the past few years.
  • Retired Badass: He's not part of the Shadow Operatives, but will step up to the plate should his friends need it.
  • Sarcastic Devotee: Is very caustic towards Mitsuru, but is deeply loyal to her. He defends her when the Phantom Thieves question her actions.
  • Serious Business: Despite his rough exterior, Shinjiro takes cooking and nutrition very seriously. He takes offense at Yusuke and Futaba's poor diets, actually prepares meals not only for Ken but the rest of the Thieves, and Ken says they never go to five-star restaurants because Shinjiro would be constantly criticizing the food.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Shinjiro has a filthy mouth, to put it lightly. He doesn't care to preserve niceties.
  • Supreme Chef: He is still hands-down the best cook out of the cast.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The October 4th incident that killed Ken's mother also drove her sister Tsukiko to commit suicide out of despair, leaving the latter's son Goro an orphan. This led Goro down the path as Shido's hitman, responsible for the death and suffering of many people.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Akihiko. They get into childish arguments all the time but are still best friends.
    • The same can be applied to him and Ken. They tease each other, press each other's buttons, but they do love each other.

    Mitsuru Kirijo

Mitsuru Kirijo

Arcana: III. Empress

Persona: Artemisia

Weapons: Rapiers

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mitsuru_fb.png
Art by iwonn_arts

The leader of the Shadow Operatives as well as the CEO of the Kirijo Group. Her hands are tied when Shido takes action against her, due to the Shadow Operatives being a government group. She is 25 at the beginning of the story.

  • The Atoner: Is still trying to atone for her grandfather's actions.
  • The Beautiful Elite: Makoto is stunned to see just how beautiful Mitsuru is.
  • Big Good: As the head of the Shadow Operatives and the person who sent Ken to Tokyo, she's pretty much the chief of the good guys. Though it's downplayed due to Shido's blackmail preventing her and the Shadow Operatives from helping the Phantom Thieves more directly, to their regret.
    • She finds a way around this in Chapter 45 by sending a lot of bandages, protein shakes, and other medical supplies to Sojiro's house to help the Thieves in the Metaverse.
  • The Dreaded: Akihiko still fears her executions. It's gotten to the point where Miyuki and Kaito recognize the word execution, though they don't know what it means.
  • Fiction 500: As the CEO of the Kirijo Group and the leader of the Shadow Operatives, this goes without saying.
  • Honest Corporate Executive: Mitsuru dedicates herself to atoning for the Kirijo Group's Dark and Troubled Past by steering the company from the direction that her grandfather had taken it, not only by cleaning up its dirty laundry but also by doing more philanthropic deeds such as opening up entry opportunities for underprivileged students to Gekkoukan High.
    • It's stated at one point that one of the reasons she founded the Shadow Operatives was so that no other group of teenagers would have to go through what SEES did, and she's regretful that she failed to do so with the Phantom Thieves.
  • An Ice Person: Shinjiro notes at one point that her being in a temper might cause a localized blizzard, and he and other characters have stated multiple times that if Mitsuru could actually go to Tokyo, Shido would be promptly turned into a Human Popsicle.
  • It's All My Fault: She's horrified to learn Futaba's state and blames herself for not pushing to see Futaba harder.
  • Last-Name Basis: Mitsuru calls most people by their last names, though some exceptions are: Minako, Akihiko, Shinjiro, and Yukari.
  • The Leader: She's the leader and founder of the Shadow Operatives.
  • Non-Idle Rich: As the CEO of the Kirijo Group, Mitsuru is extremely wealthy, but she doesn't exactly sit around twiddling her thumbs. She is mentioned to be very generous with her money, and at one point Ken's narration mentions that she donates several million yen to various charities and she has pushed for more scholarships to be offered to students who come from poor and/or broken families.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: Her hairstyle in this story.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Everyone in the Shadow Operatives know not to mess with Mitsuru. Akihiko in particular is still terrified of her, which Shinjiro mocks him for.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: She and Shinjiro. While Shinjiro is very loyal to her, he doesn't hold back on barbs.
  • You Remind Me of X: Upon meeting her for the first time, Makoto immediately notes to herself how much Mitsuru reminds her of her sister Sae.

    Minako Sanada

Minako Sanada (nee Arisato)

Arcana: 0. Fool

Persona: Eurydice, Hemera, Wild Card

Weapons: Naginatas

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/minako_commission.png

One of the two Wild Card leaders of SEES, Minako is now married to Akihiko and expecting their first child. She works solely for the Shadow Operatives, serving as Mitsuru's lieutenant. She kickstarts the plot by suggesting Ken as an undercover agent. She is 24.

  • Adaptational Deviation: Her initial Persona in the fic’s universe is Eurydice, giving Minako Divergent Character Evolution from her twin while still being connected to the myth of Orpheus. Additionally, her Ultimate Persona is Hemera instead of Messiah.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Downplayed. While she's named by the player in the game itself, she's called Kotone Shiomi in the stage play adaptation, which would later be canonized in a collaboration with Puzzle & Dragons and the 2023 port of Portable. Here, she's named Minako Arisato.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Mina. The Persona Q2 fic reveals that Minato was the one who gave it to her. Later on, her husband Akihiko uses it. In the main story, only he calls her that, though Junpei calls her Mina-tan.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It hasn't been confirmed if she's also a wielder of the Universe Arcana like Minato was before he died, or if it only went to Minato.
  • Angsty Surviving Twin: It's implied that she didn't take her twin brother's death very well at first, especially during the events of The Answer, in the immediate aftermath of Minato's Heroic Sacrifice. Though by the present day she's come to terms with her grief and is generally quite happy.
    • The Minako featured in the Persona Q2 fic plays it straight, as her Minato died when they were children and she's never quite gotten over it.
  • Ascended Extra: Since she's usually Adapted Out. But in this story, she's essentially the second in command of the Shadow Operatives, advising Mitsuru. In fact, she kickstarts the plot, by suggesting to Mitsuru that they send Ken to investigate the Phantom Thieves.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Given that Minako is a Wild Card and is essentially Number Two amongst the Shadow Operatives' ranks, she definitely has the power to back up her rank.
  • Babies Ever After: She's pregnant with her and Akihiko's child. It's hinted that she'll give birth around December. Though she unexpectedly goes into labor prematurely on the night of the casino heist, due to her having a mental breakdown upon finding out that Shido's men kidnapped Ken.
    • She gives birth to her and Akihiko's daughter, Kiyomi, in Chapter 40.
  • Cool Big Sis: Minako has developed into an older sister figure to Ken.
  • Dude Magnet: Was one when she was younger. Ken himself used to have a crush on her.
  • Fiery Redhead: In contrast to Mitsuru, she's quite feisty.
  • The Gadfly: In contrast to her brother, Minako is rather teasing and playful.
  • Happily Married: She's been married to Akihiko and according to Ken, they were the first to get married out of SEES. They're now expecting their first child.
  • Heroic BSoD: Lapses into one after discovering that Ken was in Shido's custody. Minako, as the one who suggested that Ken go undercover, takes it the hardest. Unfortunately, the resulting stress causes her to go into labor prematurely.
  • Master of All: Naturally, as she is a Wild Card. She definitely has the power to back up her rank as Mitsuru's Number Two in the Shadow Operatives.
  • Maternity Crisis: When she sees that Shido's men had kidnapped Ken to blackmail Mitsuru, she is so distraught (since it was her idea to send Ken to Tokyo in the first place) that she goes into premature labor.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Minako was the one who suggested that Ken go undercover to investigate the Phantom Thieves but starts to regret it upon realizing that she has endangered Ken with the Phantom Thieves becoming more and more targeted by Shido, the "Black Mask", and the police.
    • An even more serious one happens in Chapter 39 after they discovered that Ken had been abducted by Shido. The stress from her breakdown causes her to go into labor prematurely, three weeks before the baby was supposed to be born.
  • Number Two: She's the second-in-command of the Shadow Operatives.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: She was this with Minato before he died. Their father has also been cited as comparing the two of them with the sun and moon.
  • Related in the Adaptation: While Atlus has established that the two Persona 3 protagonists are not related, here, she is the twin sister of Minato, who died and became the Great Seal.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Upon hearing from Ken that the leader of the Phantom Thieves is a Wild Card, Minako fears that he could be a Wild Card who had gone rogue, who may be responsible for the mental shutdowns and psychotic breakdowns. Minako is technically right that a rogue Wild Card is responsible, but not her assumption of who said Wild Card is.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She doesn't die and become the Great Seal due to Minato taking up that position.

    Junpei Iori

Junpei Iori

Arcana: I. Magician

Persona: Trismegistus

Weapons: Two-handed swords

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jundori.jpg
Art by pinka_lala

Now a baseball coach and PE teacher, Junpei is still a reserve member of SEES. He is now married to Chidori Yoshino. He is now 23.

  • Butt-Monkey: His friends still love to tease Junpei. Even Miyuki and Kaito tease him, with his Embarrassing Nickname being their first word.
  • Happily Married: He's happily married to Chidori, though Chidori is rather embarrassed when Kaito and Miyuki ask her if she and Junpei are going to have a child as well.
  • Out of Focus: Junpei is not as featured as some of the Persona 3 characters.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Has this dynamic with Yukari. They'll bicker and argue, but will always have each other's backs. Minako recalled an incident while they were still in high school where Junpei got into a physical altercation with a student who was badmouthing Yukari for being a teen mother.

    Yukari Takeba

Yukari Takeba

Arcana: VI. Lovers

Persona: Isis

Weapons: Bows and Arrows

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yukari_4.png

Still a famous actress and model, Yukari is a mother in this story, having given birth to her and Minato's twin children during her last year of high school. She's a reserve member of the Shadow Operatives and is seen in a couple of scenes discussing the events with her fellow former members of SEES.

  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: Became a mother at 18.
  • Action Mom: A mother of two, yet is still a member of the Shadow Operatives. This applies to her career as well, with Futaba saying that she performs her own stunts.
  • Babies Ever After: During her last year of high school, she had twin children, Kaito and Miyuki.
  • Continuity Cameo: Chapter 17 focuses on the Phantom Thieves meeting her during a Feathermen Rangers fan event.
  • Foil: Has this with Akechi's mother, both becoming mothers to bastard children. While Akechi's mother gave into despair and died, Yukari is living her life to the fullest. According to Ken, Yukari's mother supported Yukari's decision to raise her children. In contrast, Akechi's grandparents disowned their daughter.
  • Glamorous Single Mother: Downplayed. While she's become a well-regarded actress and model, she still experiences the baggage that many single parents faced in Japanese society. Word of God mentions that her status as a single mother initially gave her difficulties in finding a foothold in her modeling career. She is also often the subject of criticism of Gossipy Hens jealous of her fame, using her illegitimate children as ammunition.
  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: When she becomes pregnant with Minato's children, she refuses to get an abortion despite knowing the social stigma she will receive for being a teen mother.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Many guys have commented on how attractive she is on different occasions.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: Yukari is mentioned to still love Minato, but she is moving on with her life, doing her best to raise her twin children.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Yukari seems to have this with both Mitsuru and Minako.
  • In-Series Nickname: Junpei still calls her Yuka-tan.
  • The Lost Lenore: Yukari still wistfully remembers Minato, but she also doesn't let his memory stop her from living her life to the fullest.
  • Mama Bear: She becomes absolutely livid when she discovered that some women insulted her children as bastards, and gets angry with Akechi for bluntly explaining why society looks down on illegitimate children.
  • Not in Front of the Kid: Gets annoyed when someone (particularly Shinjiro) cusses in front of her kids.
  • Out of Focus: Due to her job, she's usually away from her friends. However, she takes a more proactive role as the conflict between Shido and S.E.E.S. reaches its peak.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Yukari is described to wearing a pink top like she does in Persona 3.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Minato got Yukari pregnant not long before his Heroic Sacrifice, leaving her to raise their twin children by herself.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Apparently, she managed to beat Akihiko once in an arm-wrestling match.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Yukari became pregnant at 17, giving birth to the twins the month before she turned 18.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Yukari's shown to be happier than she was back in high school, thanks to a combination of motherhood and receiving closure over her issues.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Yukari wears a ring that was among Minato's things before he died, which was meant to be his White Day present for her. She wears it like a wedding ring.

    Akihiko Sanada

Akihiko Sanada

Arcana: IV. Emperor

Persona: Caesar

Weapons: Gloves and Knuckles

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akihiko.jpg

Akihiko is a police officer now, but he still involves himself with the Shadow Operatives business. However, he's not as featured compared to his wife.

  • Amazon Chaser: Akihiko is married to Minako, who is almost without a doubt the most powerful Shadow Operative.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Still plays this role to most of the members of SEES.
  • Fair Cop: Akihiko is a good-looking young man and a police officer. When he takes off his shirt, Futaba outright drools at how ripped he is.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Pulls this on Shinjiro when the latter is freaking out about Ken's kidnapping in Chapter 39.
  • Happily Married: He's married to Minako. He's looking forward to becoming a father.
  • Henpecked Husband: His niece and nephew declare him to be this, as does Shinjiro, much to his annoyance.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Gender-inverted. He has no issue changing into his disguise as one of Shido's cronies in front of the others, particularly the girls.
  • Oblivious to Love: In Persona Q2: The Ace Edition, it's implied by the alternate Minako that he's oblivious to her feelings for him, something that she's frustrated by.
  • Older and Wiser: Compared to how he's depicted in his previous incarnations of Persona 3 and Persona 4: Arena Akihiko becomes far more level-headed and mature. In one scene, he comforts Minako about her fears, showing how much he's matured from the guy with No Social Skills. Additionally, there's his Get a Hold of Yourself, Man! moment, when he shows that he realizes that this is not the time to fly off the handle.
  • Police Are Useless: Averted. Ken cites Akihiko as one of the police officers that are not corrupt.
  • Rugged Scar: He has a scar on his chest.

    Fuuka Yamagishi

Fuuka Yamagishi

Arcana: II. Priestess

Persona: Juno

Weapons: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fuuka_4.jpg
Art by Lynnie015

Fuuka has returned to Port Island, now working as a computer engineer. However, when the proposed mission comes up, it's ultimately decided that Fuuka should remain on Port Island. But she does come up and visit Shinjiro and Ken from time to time.

  • The Ace: While her abilities are not as varied as Rise's and Futaba's, she's probably the most powerful scanner still.
  • Braids of Action: Maintains her braid from Arena/Ultimax.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Has shades of this with Shinjiro. Ann also notes their contrasting appearances when they first meet.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Fuuka is described to have light turquoise hair with matching eyes.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Late in the story, Ken mentions that Fuuka's parents greatly disapproved of her dating Shinjiro, deeming him as just a distraction for Fuuka's studies. They demanded she break up with him. Fuuka ended up choosing Shinjiro, however.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Her significant other Shinjiro towers over her.
  • I Choose to Stay: Unlike Ken and Shinjiro, she remains in Port Island, due to being busy with her job. Still, she occasionally takes a train out to Tokyo to visit them.
  • Lethal Chef: Averted by the start of the story, as Shinjiro's guidance has helped improve her cooking skills significantly.
  • Mission Control: It's shown in the prologue that with the help of technology, Fuuka can scan for Shadows in Tokyo all the way from Port Island. It's also stated that it takes a few hours to get there by train, to boot. She does lament that she doesn't have a very clear view, but it really shows how much her abilities have grown.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Fuuka is generally a very sweet girl. Minako notes that for Fuuka to speak about Shido with such vehemence meant that Shido must have done something horrible to Ken.
  • Opposites Attract: She and Shinjiro. Shinjiro is tough as nails (albeit with a heart of gold), while Fuuka is sweet and gentle. Shinjiro is talented in cooking, a skill that is usually considered feminine, while Fuuka is very handy with technology which is usually considered more masculine. Shinjiro and Fuuka's abilities in cooking used to be on opposite ends of the spectrum, but given the mention that they enjoy cooking together, that is no longer the case.
  • Private Tutor: Shinjiro mentions that Fuuka helped tutor him when he was forced to repeat his third year by Mitsuru. It's part of how they became closer and developed romantic feelings for each other.
  • Team Mom: She acts quite motherly to Ken.

    Aigis

Aigis

Arcana: VII. Chariot/0. Fool

Persona: Pallas Athena, Orpheus, Wild Card

Weapons: Firearms

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aith_aigis.png
Edited by Pinigo

The seventh-generation Shadow Suppression Unit, Aigis is an android created to fight Shadows. However, after meeting SEES, she started to become more human.

  • Classy Cravat: Instead of a ribbon or tie, she now sports a bow-cravat.
  • Master of All: Although she wasn't this during the events of the Persona 3 main storyline after Minato passed away on her lap, he passed his Wild Card, and Orpheus, down to her.
  • Out of Focus: She's only appeared in a handful of scenes.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She's the Blue Oni to Labrys' Red Oni.
  • Robo Family: Besides being a member of SEES, Labrys is referred to as her older sister.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Despite being Out of Focus, Shido's threat of confiscating her for his own purposes was one of the primary catalysts for Ken going undercover.
  • Team Mom: In her first scene she's seen scolding Ken for behaving recklessly. Also, it's stated later on that she's extended her protectiveness of Minato and Minako to include their families as well.

    Labrys

Labrys

Arcana: X. Wheel of Fortune

Persona: Ariadne

Weapons: Battleaxes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/labrysp4a.png

The last remaining fifth-generation Shadow Suppression Unit, Labrys is one of the "predecessor units" to Aigis, who ran into SEES and the Shadow Operatives during the events of Persona 4: Arena.

  • Afraid to Hold the Baby: Labrys was fascinated by baby Kiyomi, but was leery of actually holding her, as she'd never seen a newborn up close before.
  • Out of Focus: She has been mentioned by SEES a few times, but it's not until relatively late into the story that she makes her full appearance.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She's the red to Aigis's blue.
  • Robo Family: She's referred to in Chapter 45 as Aigis's big sister.

    Koromaru

Koromaru

Arcana: XI. Strength

Persona: Cerberus

Weapons: Knives

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/p3koromarutransparent.png

The Action Pet of SEES and the Shadow Operatives, Koromaru awakened to his Persona during the Dark Hour after his former master's death and was taken in by SEES as a team member.

  • Amplified Animal Aptitude: He still can't talk, but he's capable of communicating with the rest of SEES (via "charades") and is known to talk to Labrys and Aigis.
  • Babies Ever After: He's found a partner dog named Hoshi since the end of Arena Ultimax, and has had several puppies with her.
  • Dented Iron: Since dogs age quicker than humans, he's not quite capable of fighting anymore, even though he still has his Persona.
  • Papa Wolf: Almost literally - he finds a mate and has puppies during the story, and is fiercely protective of his teammates (and likely his puppies as well, but they haven't been in a situation where they needed protection).
  • Staring Down Cthulhu: In Chapter 44, he not only glares down but also manages to scare off Goro Akechi of all people when the latter tried to coerce Ken into joining him.

    Minato Arisato

Minato Arisato

Arcana: 0. Fool/XXI. Universe

Persona: Orpheus, Thanatos, Messiah, Wild Card

Weapons: One-handed swords

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/p3p_maleprotagonist_cg.png

One of the two Wild Card leaders of SEES, Minato has long been dead since the events of Persona 3 as a result of his Heroic Sacrifice to stop Nyx.

  • The Ace: Implied to be this among the Wild Cards. Ren, despite not having met him due to his death, was quick to place him on a high pedestal due to him saving the world from Death itself.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Downplayed. While he's named by the player in the game itself, most supplemental material like the anime and Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight call him Makoto Yuki. Here, he uses his name from the manga, Minato Arisato.
  • Always Someone Better: While Ren considers his Wild Card predecessors to be this to him, this was especially the case with Minato.
  • The Bus Came Back: Given the scenario of Persona Q2: The Ace Edition, it can be safe to say that not only will the Arisato Twins finally get to meet him, but so will Ren and the other Phantom Thieves, along with Phantom Thief!Ken, who knows that this is a chance his senpai would kill for.
  • Disappeared Dad: He died before his children were even born.
  • The Gadfly: Not as much as the other Wild Cards, but he once told Ken that he puts hot sauce in his coffee with a completely straight face.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Ken notes that Minato had died happy with the knowledge that his death had saved the world, but more importantly, that he had saved his friends.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Gave his life to seal away Death.
  • Master of All: As one of the two Wild Card leaders of SEES, this goes without saying, and given his accomplishments, sealing away death being the top of the list, there is little doubt that he was the best of the known Wild Cards.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Ken mentioned that after Minato discovered that Akihiko was dating his twin sister, he made Akihiko do a solo run up Tartarus. Minako wasn't amused when she found out.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Had this dynamic with Minako prior to his death, their father having been cited as comparing the two of them to the sun and moon, with Minako's bright and bubbly Genki Girl personality contrasting Minato's calm and collected demeanor.
  • Posthumous Character: He's been dead ever since the events of Persona 3.
  • Present Absence: He's dead long before the story starts due to his Heroic Sacrifice creating the Great Seal. SEES still remembers and misses him, and Ren briefly notices that he feels inferior to him considering he sacrificed himself to save the world, feeling that nothing he can do could measure up to that.
  • Related in the Adaptation: He's Minako's older twin brother in the story, whereas both protagonists of P3 in canon were confirmed by Atlus to be unrelated.

The Phantom Thieves of Hearts

A group of high schoolers, devoted to stealing the hearts of corrupt adults with the purpose of reforming society. Founded by Ren Amamiya, Ryuji Sakamoto, Ann Takamaki, and the (not a) cat Morgana. However, their actions soon attract the attention of the Shadow Operatives...

    General
  • Phantom Thief: While some of them fit the trope better than others, they all fall under this. The clue is in the name of their clandestine organization, after all.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Downplayed. At first, due to their issues with corrupt adults causing them problems, they aren't exactly trusting of the Shadow Operatives or the Investigation Team even though Ken directly vouched for them. This eventually goes away, though.

    Ren Amamiya / "Joker"

Ren Amamiya / "Joker"

Weapons: Daggers and semi-automatic pistols

The leader and one of the co-founders of the Phantom Thieves. His birthday is revealed to be May 22nd, so he's seventeen at his intro. In a related one-shot set five years after the events both the main story and the spin-off called A Future In Her Eyes, he marries Ann Takamaki with the Shadow Operatives and the Investigation Team present at the ceremony.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: While the game never really touches on what his life back in his hometown was like nor his relationship with his parents, the story shows that his relationship with his parents became strained as a result of their unwillingness to hear him out at the time of the day he was falsely accused, causing him to cut off contact with them out of a belief that they completely abandoned him.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In regards to his relationship with Akechi. In the game, while both of them are rivals/enemies on opposing sides, there is still a genuine bond that exists between the two of them depending on how you as the player choose to interact with Akechi. Here, the animosity is present, but not much of the genuine camaraderie. Ren outright says when interrogated by Sae that he never considered Akechi a friend. Even when Ren learns of Akechi's backstory, he doesn't really sympathise with him given all that he has done.
  • All the Other Reindeer: Ren is mentioned to be still ostracized by the majority of Shujin Academy. He's really surprised when Ken treats him nicely when they first meet.
    • Additionally, his entire hometown turned their backs on him after the incident with Shido. But as the story goes on, it's revealed that the truth is a lot more complex than it seemed, as Ohya points out that there had to be several individuals who doubted the case that he was falsely accused of.
  • Always Someone Better: Ren develops an inferiority complex due to finding out the past Wild Cards' feats.
  • Babies Ever After: Twenty Years Later reveals that he and Ann have had a son named Tatsuo, who seems to take after his father if Futaba's referring to him as a hellion is anything to go by.
  • Berserk Button: Almost anything affiliated with politicians and the government is bound to set him off. Understandable, considering that it was an influential politician who caused him misery. Yoshida is just about the only politician Ren actually respects because of this, on top of said man being his Sun Confidant and at one point he wishes there are more people like Yoshida in the political scene.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: In a one-shot set six years after both the main fic and the spin-off called A Future In Her Eyes, which centers around Ann and Ren's wedding, Ann and Ren have one of these before the wedding priest even finishes telling Ren that he may kiss the bride, much to Ryuji's chagrin.
"SAVE IT FOR THE HONEYMOON, DAMMIT!!!"
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: While Ren's tendency for theatricality suggests that he is absolutely full of himself, he shows a surprising amount of insecurities of being an Inadequate Inheritor to his Wild Card predecessors. This is especially so after Okumura's death, which Ren blames himself for.
  • Chick Magnet: While Ren has eyes for only Ann, Ren presumably had his other female Confidants fall for him. Ken even wonders if it was a Wild Card thing. The one exception seems to be Makoto, as her attention is on Ken.
  • Combat Parkour: Ren's fighting style is described as very acrobatic.
  • Deuteragonist: Ren is the leader of the Phantom Thieves and the protagonist of Persona 5. However, one of the biggest side plots is Ren grappling with the idea of his predecessors having saved the world and questioning if he's good enough.
  • Drama Queen: Ren has a penchant for dramatics, and several other characters have outright called him the king of drama.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Played for laughs. When Ren declares that he could beat Ken in a fight, Yusuke expresses doubt. Ren then quotes this trope almost word for word (just swapping Brute with Fox).
  • Fair-Weather Friend: His entire hometown, including his friends, had cut off ties with him after he was charged.
  • The Gadfly: Is very much a troll. Ken outright wonders if it's a requirement to be a Wild Card.
  • Happily Married: A related one-shot set five years after the events of both the main story and the spin-off called A Future In Her Eyes shows Ren and Ann's wedding.
  • Heroic BSoD: He briefly undergoes one upon discovering Akechi's plan to assassinate him, as he's genuinely terrified of the prospect of dying.
  • I Kiss Your Hand: Ren occasionally kisses Ann's hand to show his affection for her.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Ren feels that he's not as great of a Wild Card as his predecessors. Ann and Morgana convince him it's not the case and Ken tells him point-blank that he thinks Ren is a great leader.
  • Indy Ploy: Demonstrates this during a tough boss fight in Okumura's Palace.
  • In-Series Nickname: Ryuji calls Ren "Ren-Ren" occasionally. But unlike in the anime, Ren never shows any annoyance being called that.
  • The Leader: Leads the Phantom Thieves.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When the group is playing video games, Ren claims that he'd love to jump right into Super Bash Bros.
  • Lovable Rogue: One of Ren's defining traits is his charisma and as the leader of the Phantom Thieves, he is definitely breaking the law.
  • Love at First Sight: He tells Ann that she had captivated him since the day they had met.
  • Master of All: He is a Wild Card, after all.
  • Meaningful Name: Joker. See Playing Card Motifs. Also, a bit of a pun as Ren loves joking around.
  • Must Have Caffeine: Downplayed and frequently played for laughs, but Ren occasionally talks about coffee in his narration.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: To his shame, he realizes that his preconceptions towards the older Persona-users were no different from how he was treated because of his record.
  • Parental Abandonment: It's mentioned that his parents cut off contact with him, something that has left him very bitter, to the point that he refuses to speak to either of them if they call. A Future In Her Eyes reveals that they managed to reconcile, however.
  • Parents as People: Late in the story, there were indications that Ren's parents truly cared for him despite their Parental Neglect of him as they had tried to contact and ask Ren about how he is doing after they realized their mistake. They also went to Tokyo just to talk to Ren in person during Christmas so they can make amends with their son. However, their Parental Abandonment of him left Ren bitter and by the time Ren's mother tried to contact him shortly after the Casino heist, Ren refused to speak with them and the one time Ann answered his parents calls, Ren curtly cut the call off. During the period of Ren's arrest to testify against Shido, it turns out that this goes both ways as Ren's parents, instead, believed that Ren is so independent that he doesn't quite need his parents, when he really does need his parents support, especially during the day he was brought to the police station for his false assault. By the time they realized their mistake, Ren's gone to Tokyo thinking that they don't believe him and completely abandoned him.
  • Parental Neglect: Even before his probation, Ren's parents had often been busy with work to spend much time with him, but he believed that they still loved him regardless. That is until the incident with Shido happened, and his opinion of them had soured since.
  • Playing Card Motifs: Joker, as it symbolizes the most powerful or dangerous card in the deck.
  • Pungeon Master: Drops puns from time to time.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After the fallout of Sae's palace, Sae and Shinjiro once again get into another argument, this time about Makoto and Ken dating. Ren, already stressed from the drugs and the brutal interrogation he had gone through, snaps and angrily calls them both out for acting so petty.
  • Sad Clown: Ren is a confident, wise-cracking joker, but beneath that surface is an insecure boy who is still coping with his life being under probation and the ostracism that came from it, including from his own parents.
  • Serious Business: Due to living in a coffee shop, Ren developed a love of coffee so strong that he was horrified when he learned about Ken's story on how Minato supposedly drank coffee 'tainted' with hot sauce.
  • Shipper on Deck: Very much supports Ken/Makoto, teasing both about the other in different instances. He also purposely throws the garter at Ken, due to the superstition that the man who catches the garter in the garter throw will be the next to be married.
  • Significant Birth Date: May is the fifth month of the year, which alludes to Ren being the protagonist of the fifth game of the Persona series, and 22 is another number used for the Fool Arcana.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Gender-Inverted example. Ren tells the male thieves when he was asked of what he liked in a girl that he was initially attracted to Anne because she was the first person he met in Tokyo who had been kind to him, and later fell in love with Anne for her bright and empathetic personality as he got to know her.
  • Tempting Fate: When Ken suggests that Ren has the potential to become a politician, Ren jokingly retorts that Akechi will become a Phantom Thief in that case. Ren would be wise to take notes from his Sun Confidant.
  • Unknown Rival: Unlike in canon, the rivalry between Ren and Akechi is one-sided on the latter's part. Ren's personal beef with Akechi is less due to any rivalry of sorts and more because Akechi had hurt many people, including Ren's friends. In their confrontation in the engine room of Shido's palace, Ren is outright disturbed by the resentment that Akechi has for him.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Ren is hurt finding out the truth about Ken coming to Tokyo, and flat out asks Ken this. This leads Ken to vehemently protest that it wasn't a lie.
  • You Remind Me of X: Ren reminds Ken of his two former leaders.
    • Shinjiro, on the other hand, thinks that Ren mostly reminded him of Minako, due to their trolling tendencies. He resolves to never let the two meet. Unfortunately for Shinjiro, his fears came true when Ren is officially acquainted with Minako and was quick to get along with her right after they escape from being captured by Yaldabaoth with the help of the Velvet Room denizens.

    Ryuji Sakamoto / "Skull"

Ryuji Sakamoto / "Skull"

Once the star of Shujin's track team, but due to Kamoshida purposefully provoking him, Ryuji ended up with a broken leg and the pariah of the school. But due to this, it led to him becoming one of the co-founders of the Phantom Thieves. Ryuji is quite brash and hot-tempered but has a good heart.

  • Abusive Parents: On the receiving end. His father was abusive to both Ryuji and his mother.
  • Comically Missing the Point: At one point, Anne scolds him for his No Indoor Voice tendencies. Ryuji's response is to point out that they're outside.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: In Chapter 39, when Akechi proposes that he could use his connections to break Ren out, Ryuji openly confronts Akechi which the rest of the Thieves fear might expose their plan. However, Ryuji later points out that Akechi would no doubt find it suspicious that the Thieves would go along with his plan without question, especially considering that the Thieves have been hostile towards him during their time together. The rest of the Thieves can't help but agree with his logic.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Downplayed. Ryuji's hair is naturally black, but in the story, his hair is a bright bleached blond, and he's the lightning user of the Phantom Thieves.
  • Friend to All Children: While their first impression was somewhat rocky, Ryuji is very attentive to the twins in the PQ2 fic, often offering piggyback rides.
  • Giver of Lame Names: His idea of a codename for Ken was "Tux Boy". This suggestion was firmly rejected. On top of that, there's his canon suggestions for Makoto and Yusuke, "Shoulder Pads" and "Abuurage" respectively. His teammates will never let him live it down either.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Despite his rough edges, Ryuji is very kind, and aspires to be the moral opposite of his abusive father, protecting his girl and making her smile.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: He adopts one of Koromaru's puppies and names it Shoyu.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: He's best friends with Ren.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite being Book Dumb, there are times where Ryuji has displayed a smarter side to himself.
    • He openly tells Akechi that he doesn't trust him at all. While it was a risky move, Ryuji points out to the rest of the Thieves that Akechi would find it suspicious that the Thieves would suddenly go along with Akechi's plan to rescue Ren (he won't) when they have been openly distrustful of him prior.
    • He makes an insightful comparison of Shido with Hitler: a charismatic politician using their sway over the masses for their own benefit.
  • Hypocritical Humor: While watching an interview featuring Akechi, Akechi compares catching the Phantom Thieves to a strategy used for romance. When Ren questions this, Ryuji just scoffs and states that Akechi's probably a virgin. Ryuji has never had a girlfriend... let alone had sex.
  • The Lancer: Ryuji is this to Ren, and Ken refers to him as Ren's right-hand man at one point.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: His lame suggestions for code names for Ken, Makoto, and Yusuke. Ken especially refuses to let go of Ryuji's suggestion of "Tux Boy".
  • Scars Are Forever: Not a scar perse, but A Future In Her Eyes reveals that, despite Mitsuru Kirijo having paid for expensive surgery, the broken leg that Ryuji received from his confrontation with Kamoshida that resulted in the disbanding of the Shujin Academy track team can never fully be repaired.
  • Shipper on Deck: Shipped Ren/Ann pretty hard. He's actually the catalyst of Ren and Ann starting a romantic relationship.
  • Ship Tease: Has a little bit with Shiho in Chapter 35. In A Future In Her Eyes, Ryuji and Shiho are shown to have Hooked Up Afterwards.
  • Shock and Awe: Captain Kidd uses lightning spells. However, he is portrayed to utilize physical attacks much more.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Ryuji is not as bad as Shinjiro, but he still is quite the pottymouth.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Ryuji is baffled by how Haru and Makoto still see the good in their relatives (Okumura and Sae respectively) despite the terrible things they have done. Justified since Haru and Makoto still have fond memories of the good times they shared with their relatives, whereas Ryuji had no such experiences with his abusive father.
  • You Remind Me of X: Ryuji and Ann's bickering reminds Ken of Junpei and Yukari.

A mysterious cat that Ren and Ryuji first encountered in the Metaverse.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He's a bit toned down in this story but still snarky and arrogant.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Is quite heartbroken when he sees that Ren and Ann have feelings for each other. He even feels betrayed until Ken talks him out of it.
  • Always Someone Better: Becomes insecure about Ken's knowledge of Shadows and role as a healer, and then later Futaba's analysis abilities. It takes a combination of Ren, Ken, and Futaba to snap him out of his jealousy.
  • Animal Jingoism: Despite how much he denies being a cat, he finds Koromaru the dog very uncouth.
  • Become a Real Boy: As in canon, Morgana firmly believes that he is a human trapped in a feline body. Whether this actually is the case in-universe or not, the one-shot A Future In Her Eyes, reveals that, unlike in canon and without the influence of the Big Bad of the Third Semester endgame content of Persona 5: The Royal, he actually gets his wish and becomes a human, although it turns out that he was a twelve-year-old boy when he finally got his human form.
  • Blow You Away: Zorro utilizes wind spells.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Has shades of this. An annoyed Shinjiro compares him to a younger Mitsuru.
  • Combat Medic: Morgana is the best healer out of the team. That being said, he's no slouch in battle.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Shinjiro is left wondering why Morgana is named that when he's male. Shiho makes a similar assumption.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He gets jealous of Ken and Futaba's skills and knowledge, which makes his role as the Thieves' mentor redundant.
  • Hopeless Suitor: As in canon, Morgana is infatuated with Ann. However, unlike in canon, he learns about Ren and Ann before they even start dating. Not that he would have had a chance in the first place, as his human form is that of a twelve-year-old.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: He's heartbroken upon discovering that his crush Ann had feelings for Ren. But after a lecture from Ken, he decides to accept it.
  • In Spite of a Nail: While the other Thieves unlock their Ultimate Personas following significant moments in the story like in Persona 3, Morgana unlocks Mercurius the same way as in canon due to his Confidant with Ren being automatic. The scene is skipped in the fic as a result.
  • Mission Control: He plays this at first, but is quickly replaced by Futaba.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Has shades of this with Miyuki and Kaito in the Persona Q2 fic. The twins poke at his buttons a lot and much to his chagrin, both Makoto and Ann side with them.
  • Use Your Head: Has to bash his head against the vent's grate at one point during the rescue chapter. This leads to him falling out of the vent.

A beautiful quarter-Caucasian girl preyed on by Kamoshida for his lustful desires, Ann is the last co-founder of the Phantom Thieves. Late in the Futaba arc, she starts to date Ren, albeit quietly due to Ren aiding Makoto with Eiko. In a one-shot set six years after the events of the main story and the spin-off called A Future In Her Eyes, she becomes Ren's wife.

  • Aborted Declaration of Love: This happens during Rank 9 of Ann's Confidant. She nearly confesses to Ren, but as she thinks he's secretly dating Makoto, she backpedals.
  • Affectionate Nickname: After they start dating, Ren occasionally refers to Ann as "my lady".
  • Babies Ever After: Twenty Years Later reveals that she and Ren have had a son, Tatsuo, who seems to take after his father is Futaba referring to him as a hellion is anything to go by.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": Downplayed, compared to the game.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Ann may be nice, but she isn't afraid to dress you down if she thinks you deserve it.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: In a one-shot set five years after both the main fic and the spin-off called A Future In Her Eyes, which centers around Ann and Ren's wedding, Ann and Ren have one of these before the wedding priest even finishes telling Ren that he may kiss the bride, much to Ryuji's chagrin.
"SAVE IT FOR THE HONEYMOON, DAMMIT!!!"
  • Cool Big Sis: Ann acts like an older sister to Futaba. Futaba is seen clinging to Ann a few times when she's nervous.
  • Dressed Like a Dominatrix: As Panther.
  • Epic Fail: Her attempts to get Ren and Makoto to "admit" that they're dating. Ren and Makoto are baffled while Ryuji snaps and finally blurts out that Ren likes her.
  • First Girl Wins: Ren meets her on the first day of school, quickly falling for her. They get together during the Futaba arc. There are scenes dedicated to showing how much these two support each other during their weak moments.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: Ann realizes that she has feelings for Ren after seeing him and Makoto on a fake date.
  • Happily Married: A related one-shot set five years after the events of both the main story and the spin-off called A Future In Her Eyes shows Ren and Ann's wedding.
  • The Heart: She's the emotional core of the Phantom Thieves and usually steps up to reassure her friends.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With her best friend, Shiho. She takes it very hard when Shiho has to leave.
  • Hope Bringer: One of Ann's notable traits is her optimism, something that Ken remarks on at one point.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: The Ace In The Hole version of Ann spells her name "Anne", though that's how her name was spelled in the Japanese version of the canon material.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Attempts this, thinking that Ren likes Makoto.
  • Nice Girl: Ann is noted for her kindness and empathy.
  • Playing with Fire: Carmen utilizes powerful fire spells.

The former protege of the disgraced artist Madarame, the second target of the Phantom Thieves. As an artist, he's in charge of creating the calling cards. 16 at his introduction.

  • Big Eater: A recurring problem between Yusuke's poor finances and tendency to skip meals. Ken attempts to rectify this by bringing him lunches.
  • Brutal Honesty: Yusuke is not the type to mince words.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Yusuke often asks to paint his friends in the nude and doesn't understand why they object.
  • Fan of the Underdog: A fan of Chidori's artwork, as he mention that Chidori is fairly underappreciated among the artists community.
  • Hidden Depths: He takes Haru's situation very seriously, as he sees his own situation in Haru's trouble with her father. He also explains why it's not so easy for Haru to break out and rebel.
Yusuke: It's… not that simple. *clenches hands* You have to understand… it's not simple to just rebel against a parental figure. You want to believe that they're still kind and good, that they're concerned about what's best for you.
  • An Ice Person: Goemon makes use of ice abilities.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He comments that he didn't know that Yukari was married upon the revelation of her children to the Thieves, not realizing that the twins were illegitimate children and their father was dead. Yusuke was quick to apologize afterwards.
  • Ship Tease: He has some with Haru, as he understands her situation in a way the others don't. The one-shot featuring Ren and Ann's wedding reveals that they Hooked Up Afterwards.
  • Starving Artist: Ken even considers him to be the embodiment of the stereotype.

The student council president of Shujin Academy, Makoto ends up getting involved with the Phantom Thieves when she blackmails them into targeting Kaneshiro, a mafia who is preying on Shujin's students. She becomes one of the Phantom Thieves Ken grows closest to. And at the beginning of the Sae arc, she and Ken start dating.

  • Always Someone Better: Believes she's inferior to her older sister.
  • Atomic Superpower: Specializes in nuclear powers.
  • Big Sister Worship: She really looks up to Sae. She's simply devastated to see how much her sister has fallen.
  • Car Fu: Is occasionally described as ramming her bike against Shadows.
  • First Girl Wins: Makoto is the first girl that Ken properly meets when he comes to Tokyo. They become friends and slowly develop feelings for each other. They get together in Chapter 31, during the School Festival.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: She pulls it big time, when Shinjiro, Akihiko, Rise, Ryuji, Futaba, and Ann all blame themselves for Ken's kidnapping.
  • Happily Married: Very heavily implied by the one-shot A Future In Her Eyes, as after she catches Ann's bouquet, the other Phantom Thieves begin congratulating her, much to her embarrassment. The icing on the wedding cake comes along when Ren throws the garter directly at Ken's face.
    • Confirmed in the one-shot "Twenty Years Later" where Makoto and Ken are married with a son, Riku.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: The Sae fight is changed so that Makoto can tell that to Sae. It works.
  • It's All My Fault: Makoto couldn't get over how guilty she feels for allowing Kamoshida to abuse and harass the students, slowly escalating the situation until it erupted with Shiho's attempted suicide.
    • In the Persona Q2 spinoff, it's shown that Makoto still feels incredibly guilty about that.
  • Missing Mom: Makoto's mom is mentioned to have died from what's implied to be terminal illness. Makoto mentions that she died when Makoto was six, so her memories of Mrs. Niijima are hazy at best.
  • Oblivious to Love: Makoto didn't realize that she had feelings for Ken until Haru pointed it out.
  • Official Couple: With Ken after Chapter 31.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: She laments this, finding it horribly embarrassing that she couldn't find a topic that would interest Futaba.
  • Team Mom: She looks out for everyone, much like how her eventual boyfriend Ken Amada plays the Team Dad.
    • Both she and Ann take turns trying to comfort Futaba after she inadvertently causes Ken to get captured.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Often on the receiving end of this during the Sae arc.
  • You Killed My Father: In this fic, Kaneshiro had a hand in killing Makoto's father. When Kaneshiro's Shadow gloated about this, she's far more motivated to take him down.

The adopted daughter of Sojiro Sakura and the biological daughter of Wakaba Isshiki, Futaba enters the scene at the end of the Kaneshiro arc. Along with contacting Ren to deal with Medjed, she also becomes interested when the Phantom Thieves mention Ken.

  • Adaptation Origin Connection: In this story, the Shadow Operatives knew Wakaba. Both Mitsuru and Minako remember Wakaba in a fond light.
  • Break the Cutie: In addition to what happens to her in canon, the aftermath of the defeat of Sae really breaks her, considering she got hurt and Ken got captured protecting her.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: She starts ogling Akihiko's chest as he's changing into his disguise as one of Shido's men.
  • Everyone's Baby Sister: The rest of the Phantom Thieves tend to baby, her, as she's the youngest.
  • Fangirl: Futaba is a huge Yukari fangirl.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Futaba actually met Mitsuru and Minako back when Wakaba was working for the Kirijo Group but doesn't really remember it, as she wasn't interested in her mom's work at the time.
  • The Gadfly: Enjoys teasing and riling up her teammates.
  • Happily Adopted: She's very happy as Sojiro's adoptive daughter.
  • It's All My Fault: Tragically played up when Ken is kidnapped by Shido's men. She laments that she had spent two years thinking that she was responsible for Wakaba's death, only to discover the truth. But this incident... was her fault.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Has this dynamic with both Ren and Ken, but the focus is on Ken. Ken treats her like an Annoying Younger Sibling at times but deeply cares for her. And Futaba remembers the anniversary of Ken's mother's death, even walking through the rain to check up on Ken.
  • Spanner in the Works: In the long run, Futaba is the reason why Ken joins the Phantom Thieves. She contacts him as Alibaba to demand information on the Shadow Operatives, which motivates him to investigate matters further by joining the Thieves.
  • You Killed My Father: Futaba declares that she won't forgive Akechi and Shido for killing Wakaba.
  • You Remind Me of X: Futaba reminds Shinjiro of both Minako and Rise, all three of them being redheads who enjoy trolling their friends.

    Haru Okumura / "Noir"

A third-year student at Shujin Academy and daughter of the president of a large food manufacturer. She is refined and good at communicating with others, but naive to the ways of the world. She first meets the Phantom Thieves when they went to the Diet Building to investigate Shido and later joins them after accidentally following them into her father’s Palace.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Haru appears first in the Kaneshiro arc, having a conversation with Ken and revealing that she deeply admires Mitsuru. She makes a few other appearances before formally meeting the Phantom Thieves.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Haru develops a crush on Ren. But by the time she's properly introduced, Ren is dating Ann and doesn't have eyes for anybody else.
  • All-Loving Hero: Haru is a very kind girl, reaching out to Makoto during her turmoil in the casino arc.
  • Badass Adorable: Haru's very cute, but she wields an axe and a grenade launcher. Her choice of weapons floors the Phantom Thieves.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Haru is not someone to mess with, especially in the Metaverse.
  • Break the Cutie: Arguably even more so than in canon. After the death of her father, she falls into a depression which she doesn't snap out of until a pep talk from Mitsuru.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: A couple of times. One being during her awakening, and the second time is during the confrontation with Okumura.
  • Dramatic Spotlight: One pops up during Haru's awakening. Ken even lampshades it, questioning where the light is coming from.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Unlike most of the girls from Persona 4, Haru was capable of baking a cake, much to Ken's relief.
  • Freudian Threat: Makes a thinly-veiled one towards Cognitive Sugimura shortly after awakening to Milady.
  • Girly Bruiser: Haru's quite feminine, but it doesn't stop her from kicking all kinds of Shadow ass.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Haru is quite feminine and polite and her Color Motif is purple.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Haru develops a crush on Ren as in canon, but Ren and Ann are already dating at that point. Haru accepts their relationship though since they're very clearly happy together.
  • Last Girl Wins: Averted, the author showed why this trope is usually avoided. By the time Haru meets and falls for Ren, he's already in a relationship with Ann.
  • Look Behind You: Unlike in the game, she's on the receiving end for this. Futaba pulls this on her when the truth of the Phantom Thieves' identities dawns on her.
  • Love Hurts: Non-romantic example. Haru is devastated when her father dies.
  • Psychic Powers: Milady uses psychokinetic skills in battle.
  • Ship Tease: She receives some with Yusuke. She's quite touched when Yusuke gives her a drawing that he made of her, shortly after her awakening. She's also seen admiring his artistic skills.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Haru is 5'2", the second shortest human Phantom Thief. And yet she wields a battleaxe and a grenade launcher.

The Investigation Team

A group of high school students who were responsible for solving the murder case that plagued the small town of Inaba years ago, capturing Tohru Adachi, who in turn, gave Yu and by extension, the rest of the Investigation Team, the last pieces of the puzzle they needed in order to defeat the true villain behind the whole mess, Izanami/Izanami-no-Okami. After helping the Shadow Operatives in another incident in the town, both groups became allies, with some members of the Investigation Team joining the Shadow Operatives themselves.

  • Out of Focus: They have far less focus than either the Shadow Operatives or the Phantom Thieves.

    Yu Narukami

Weapons: Longswords

Leader of the Investigation Team, and a part-time Shadow Operative.

  • Adaptational Badass: In their brief fight in Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, both Yu and Ren were at a stalemate. In Persona Q2: The Ace Edition, however, Yu was able to disarm Ren and would have defeated him had Ken not jumped in.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Or little cousin in this case. Yu gets very overprotective whenever Nanako has a crush on someone.
  • Official Couple: He's dating Rise. By the time of the story, their relationship was made public.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: After the Phantom Thieves leave Yasoninaba, Yu thinks there's something odd going on with Igor, his former benefactor and the proprietor of the Velvet Room, due to his old ally giving his successor as a Wild Card strange abilities like the Third Eye, on top of the fact that Marie disappeared while looking into what was going on with the Velvet Room.
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: Like Minako and Aigis (the other senior Wild Cards), he's a part-time Shadow Operative - which means he can't go to Tokyo directly to help the Phantom Thieves thanks to Shido blackmailing Mitsuru.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: When the Phantom Thieves take a trip to Inaba, the townsfolk speak of him in very high regard.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Ren starts having an inferiority complex of not being as capable as his predecessors, Yu gives him a pep talk, reassuring the latter that he doesn't need to compare himself to any of them and to be his own person.

The son of Inaba's Junes store manager, and one of the founding members of the Investigation Team. After the events of Persona 4: Arena Ultimax, his family adopted Teddie.

  • Blow You Away: His Persona has wind magic.
  • Older and Wiser: While he's made only one appearance in the story, its' clear that Yosuke has grown out of his immaturity (for the most part).
  • Out of Focus: Is the only member of the Investigation Team that hasn't appeared on-screen yet, only showing up during a conference call of the IT.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Since his parents adopted Teddie, the latter is now counted as his little brother.

A famous Idol Singer under the name "Risette". She is currently dating Yu Narukami. As she is now in her twenties, she's officially moved on from being a teen idol.
  • Ascended Extra: Limited to cameos on posters in the game, she takes a much more active role in the story.
  • Dude Magnet: As previously, Rise has many admirers. Ryuji in particular is shocked that Ken is acquainted with her.
  • The Gadfly: Ken comments that Rise's even worse than Minako in this regard.
  • Odd Friendship: She has one with Fuuka. While they're both the Mission Control, they're opposite in personality. Ken remarks on this especially since Rise drives Shinjiro crazy, but has to put up with her due to Fuuka's friendship with her.
  • Official Couple: She is currently dating Yu Narukami, and their relationship was already made public for some time.
  • She Is All Grown Up: While Rise has always been a pretty girl, ever since she's hit her twenties, she's described to be simply gorgeous. Makoto admits that she doesn't pay much attention to idols, but she was surprised by how beautiful Rise has become.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Makoto and Ken, and enjoys pestering both of them for it.
    • Additionally, for Shinjiro and Fuuka, given how she's pestering him to propose already much to Shinjiro's annoyance.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Rise shows that she's now capable of summoning Kouzeon in the real world.

The original Detective Prince who has now publicly been revealed to be a woman, and has become a part-time member of the Shadow Operatives. Sadly, Shido's Obstructive Bureaucracy prevents her from being able to conduct any form of investigation in Tokyo, and with the general public enthralled by the exploits of her so-called successor, Goro Akechi, she's been having trouble finding work as a Private Detective as well.

  • Always Someone Better: Played straight and inverted. Inverted with the Investigation Team and the Shadow Operatives, who consider her to be this compared to her Sucksessor Akechi. Played straight with the general public, who consider Akechi to be this to her due to his more charismatic personality.
  • Oblivious to Love: It apparently took her years to realize Kanji liked her.
  • Official Couple: Is currently in a relationship with Kanji.
  • Light 'em Up / Casting a Shadow: Her Persona makes use of both Light and Dark skills.
  • Police Are Useless: A justified example. Due to her being an official member of the Shadow Operatives, Shido's Obstructive Bureaucracy prevents her from conducting any operations in Tokyo.

    Chie Satanoka

Chie Satanoka

Arcana: VII. Chariot

Persona: Haraedo-no-Okami

Weapons: Boots

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chie_0.png

A member of the Investigation Team who is currently studying to become a police officer. She gets drawn into the fray by request of Mitsuru Kirijo as backup in the event that the Phantom Thieves' Gambit Roulette goes south.

  • Friend on the Force: Acts as the insider in the police force for the Phantom Thieves, helping Ren escape from the Anti-Social Force's custody while he was still drugged.
  • An Ice Person: Her Persona's element is ice, though she personally prefers physical skills.
  • Oh, Crap!: Chie's reaction when she realizes Akechi notices her in the police station as she's on her way to rescue Ren. She thankfully manages to trick him into thinking she's just a normal officer, but not without him commenting about the bags under her eyes. She is not amused.
  • Police Are Useless: Averted. She and Akihiko are to provide backup for the Phantom Thieves in the case that their gambit fails.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Has this dynamic with Yosuke; they don't hesitate to throw jabs at each other but have each other's backs nonetheless.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Most of the Investigation Team suspects that Chie and Yosuke may actually have romantic feelings for each other, but that it is going to take longer for these feelings to come out. Whether this is true or not, Chie and Yosuke are definitely Vitriolic Best Buds.

    Teddie

Arcana: XVII. Star

Persona: Kamui-Moshiri

Weapons: Claws

Despite being a Shadow that took the form of a cartoon bear when the Investigation Team first met him in the TV World, Teddie has come a long way since then, awakening to not only human emotions and acquiring a Persona of his own, thus allowing him to manifest in the real world with a human form, but his bear form has since not only become the Mascot for the Inaba branch of Junes, but for the Junes franchise as a whole, and he has been Happily Adopted by the Hanamura family, making him and Yosuke brothers, and presumably finally letting him move out of Yosuke's closet.

  • Become a Real Boy: While Teddie has been able to manifest a human form in the real world for years before the start of the story, Teddie, presumably thanks to Mitsuru Kirijo, has since been given an actual identity of his own and has become adopted by the Hanamura family, allowing him to actually be a real boy in the real world.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Ever as always, Teddie tries to score with Ann and Makoto upon first meeting them. Unfortunately, Ann is already an Official Couple with Ren, and Makoto has feelings for Ken, however she Cannot Spit It Out.
    • In Persona Q2: The Ace Edition, Teddie tries again to score with Ann, Makoto, and Haru. However, both Ann and Makoto are an Official Couple with Ren and Ken respectively, while Haru flat-out shuts him down, stating that she has no romantic interest in him.
  • An Ice Person: His Persona's element.
  • Happily Adopted: It has been revealed that since the events of Persona 4/Persona 4 Golden and the Arena games, Yosuke's parents have adopted Teddie, thus making him and Yosuke brothers.
  • Mascot: In the years that have passed since Persona 4/Persona 4 Golden and the Arena games, Teddie, in his bear form, has become the official mascot for not only the Inaba branch of Junes, but the mascot for the entire Junes franchise. Although, according to Ryuji, the people who have to wear Teddie's suit are less than happy about the design choice.
  • Related in the Adaptation: By virtue of being Happily Adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Hanamura, Teddie and Yosuke have become brothers.

    Kanji Tatsumi

Kanji Tatsumi

Arcana: IV. Emperor

Persona: Takeji Zaiten

Weapons: Shields and blunt objects

By Lute

A member of the Investigation Team, Kanji's rough exterior has softened somewhat. He is presumed to have taken over more duties at his family's textile shop and is mentioned to teach kids in his spare time. He is now in a relationship with Naoto Shirogane.

  • The Big Guy: Ren notices that he's built "like a brick wall" the first time he sees him.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: This is Kanji to a T. Not only does he make plush toys, he really wants to pet Morgana, much to his girlfriend Naoto's exasperation.
  • Official Couple: In a relationship with Naoto when the story starts.
  • Shock and Awe: His Persona uses electric magic, along with pure physical might.

    Marie

Marie

Arcana: XX. Aeon.

Persona: Kaguya

The current form of the goddess Izanami-No-Mikoto, who went missing before the start of the story after she left Inaba in order to discover why the Velvet Room had seemingly gone missing.

  • Chekhov M.I.A.: Her disappearance, plus the knowledge that Igor gave Ren the ability to use the Third Eye, tips Yu off to the fact that something is off, but he has yet to act on it. Sure enough, she is later revealed to have been imprisoned by Yaldabaoth along with Igor, Margaret and Theodore. Her absence also allows for Mementos to merge with Inaba, since she’s not around to protect it.
  • The Ghost: Before the start of the story, she left to investigate the Velvet Room's disappearance. Yu says that the Investigation Team hasn't heard from her in months since then. Subverted in chapter 52, where it’s revealed that she was held captive by Yaldabaoth along with Igor, Margaret and Theodore.
  • Honorary True Companion: Marie is unofficially a member of the Investigation Team, by virtue of their bond with her.

The second coming of the Detective Prince. However, the charismatic detective is simply a front. Secretly, he is the mysterious Black Mask, the villain responsible for the mental shutdowns. 18 at his introduction.

  • Adaptational Badass: In Chapter 44, he demonstrates the ability to store multiple Personas like the other Wild Cards, something that he was either incapable of or never bothered to do in canon.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Akechi is more cunning than his canon counterpart:
    • He doesn't flat out blackmail the team, revealing that he knows that they're the Phantom Thieves, and asks to join them for personal reasons.
    • Unlike in canon where he gets blindsided by the revelation that Shido planned to betray him, Akechi is fully aware of how treacherous his father is and that his usefulness to Shido is what's keeping him safe for now.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy:
    • It's downplayed, but in regards to his working relationship with Sae, he does show genuine respect for her. Unlike in canon, he doesn't call her a "foolish woman" behind her back as he prepares to assassinate Ren. Furthermore, after the Phantom Thieves defeat them, he goes to Sae for help. She takes care of him before Akechi goes into hiding. He eventually admits that Sae is the only genuine relationship he had.
    • Previously, he also partakes in trying to reason with Shadow Sae. This is in contrast to how he acted in the game, where he bluntly points out to Makoto that trying to reason with Sae's shadow is pointless since she's not talking to the actual Sae.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In canon, Akechi has conflicting feelings towards Joker, which are mixed between respect and envy. Here, however, all he seems to possess is jealousy and loathing towards Ren.
  • Always Someone Better: To Akechi, it's Ren. His narration has him incredibly jealous that Ren can seemingly surpass him in everything without really trying.
  • And Then What?: Both Ken and Haru give this as an Armor-Piercing Question once he gets revenge on Shido. Akechi has no way of answering.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: Aside from his usual ability to drive people's shadows berserk, Akechi's new way of recruiting multiple Personas is through holding Shadows up at literal gunpoint. This is in contrast to how Ren gains his Personas, which is typically either through bonds he's made or winning the trust of Shadows who willingly join him (albeit they have to be held up before a conversation can start - Akechi simply threatens them).
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Akechi acts polite and well-mannered. However, his POV in Chapter 36 shows how much he views his teammates in contempt.
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • In Persona Q2: The Ace Edition, he's constantly made fun of by Miyuki and Kaito and the Phantom Thieves, knowing Akechi's true nature, make no attempt to back him up.
    • Sae's cognition of him is an even bigger one. He first gets socked by Ken when he tries to flirt with Makoto, and later in his second appearance gets a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown by Haru and Anne looking to vent their anger towards the real Akechi on him instead.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Ken's Abel. Unlike the usual example of the trope, they are cousins rather than siblings.
  • Didn't See That Coming: He never expected for Ken to be his long-lost cousin when Shido divulged it to him.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Through flashbacks, Akechi loves his mother very much. Part of why he hates Shido so much is because his discarding of her eventually led to her suicide.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: After the revelation of his relation to Ken, Akechi can't help but feel a genuine sense of attachment to his cousin. This is compounded by how Ken chose to treat him with a degree of kindness during their time working together. This growing attachment causes him to cling on to the idea that the two of them can work together to get revenge on Shido. This is, however, deconstructed because Akechi only started valuing Ken because they happened to be related. Before that, he essentially viewed Ken with the same degree of contempt as he does with the rest of the Phantom Thieves.
    • A smaller example, as stated above he does seem to genuinely respect Sae as a partner and even possible friend, in this fic.
    • Additionally, Akechi's motivations are partly driven by his desire to avenge his mother.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Despite his typical Never My Fault attitude, he actually apologizes (or at least tries, since Ken begrudgingly admits it was going to happen eventually) to Ken in Chapter 18 after telling Miyuki and Kaito why society looks down on bastard children and seeing how hurt they were by it.
    • He expresses disgust towards how Okumura treated his daughter, which is understandable given that he and his mother were treated the same way by Shido.
    • Akechi was also somewhat shocked that Shido's men actually shot Futaba after the Casino heist.
    • He's also not appreciative of Shido's sexist remarks towards women, distastefully noting to himself that he shouldn't be surprised considering how Shido had treated Akechi's mother.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good:
    • Akechi is genuinely taken aback by Ken's kindness towards him in their battle against Shadow Sae, in spite of the usual animosity that the Phantom Thieves had with him.
    • Akechi is baffled and angered upon discovering that Shinjiro was responsible for the death of Ken's mother and that Ken chose to be his ward. Akechi's first assumption is that Ken is simply getting close to Shinjiro so he could enact his revenge like he's doing with Shido. A Shut Up, Hannibal! and "The Reason You Suck" Speech from Ken quickly shuts down that notion in Akechi's face.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Arrogance. It never occurs to Akechi that his adversaries will pick up on his schemes. He's so confident in his plans that it never even occurs to him that both the Phantom Thieves and Shido could've figured out his intentions.
    • His tendency to underestimate others. After supposedly killing Ren, he doesn't bother to monitor their activities in the Metaverse because he assumed that they will be helpless with the loss of their leader. This severe oversight comes back to bite him hard by the time he discovers that the Phantom Thieves have managed to infiltrate much of Shido's palace.
  • Foil:
    • Besides being this to Ren like he is in canon, he's also this to Ken here. Akechi is basically what Ken might look like if he never gave up his obsession with revenge, and also threw away any semblance of morality in its pursuit.
    • In a specific example for Ren, also, when he threatens a Shadow into becoming one of his Personas, their line upon joining him is "Thou art I, I am thou" - an inversion of the typical line given when Awakening.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: After Ken learns from him about how Shido discarding his mother pretty much destroyed his life, Ken admits that he can understand what he feels, but the fact he's murdered dozens of people in preparation to get his revenge on Shido, including Wakaba Isshiki and Kunikazu Okumura, is too much for him to accept, and later, the rest of the Thieves mostly have No Sympathy after learning the truth from Ken. They point out that Ken, despite having been a victim under similar circumstances, never stooped to mass murder as Akechi did.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Akechi is quite aware that none of the Phantom Thieves really like him. Ryuji specifically says to his face that he's never liked Akechi.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Akechi, as in canon, becomes jealous of Ren, which is vividly shown in a segment from his perspective in Chapter 36. However, this chapter also reveals that Akechi has become jealous of Ken, for getting a life that Akechi always wanted: being Happily Adopted.
    • In Persona Q2: The Ace Edition, Akechi shows shades of this when Minako reveals that she has the ability to use Fusion Spells.
    • He also shows shades of this towards Kaito and Miyuki who, despite being illegitimate children like himself, live comfortable lives as the son and daughter of the famous Yukari Takeba.
    • He also becomes jealous of the rest of the Phantom Thieves because of how loyal and caring Ken is to them, especially when Ken rejects Akechi's offer to work together despite the fact they're cousins.
  • Hidden Depths: Unlike canon, Akechi shows that to a degree he actually respects Sae and even states she's probably one of the few people he actually could admit he likes.
  • Horrible Judge of Character:
    • During their time working together, Akechi observed that Ken does not try to assume a leadership role in the Phantom Thieves, and assumed that Ken was rather passive. Thus he's caught off guard upon hearing that Ken had the stones to refuse Shido's offer right in his face, despite the fact that doing so would easily warrant his death.
    • Due to the fact that they were brought up under similar circumstances, as well as the revelation that they are cousins, Akechi hoped that Ken would willingly team up with him to take down Shido together once Ken knows how much misery the man had brought down upon their family. However, Ken's Character Development meant that he had long since moved on from his issues, in contrast to Akechi, who refuses to let go of his obsession with vengeance. And it's shown from Ken's perspective that even if they were indeed cousins, he will never condone Akechi's murderous actions. Sure enough, when Akechi attempts to win Ken over to his side, he promptly gets an earful and booted out of Ken's apartment in response.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: While a Wild Card, Akechi had no guidance from someone like Igor or the Velvet Room attendants, or really any other Persona-users to learn from at all. As a result, he does not know how to access the full capabilities of the Wild Card that would let him possess multiple Personas outside of Robin Hood and Loki until after he learns how to recruit Shadows from watching Joker. By the time he fights the team in Shido's Palace, he's picked up Sekhmet, Krishna, Fenrir, Sherlock Holmes, and Tobi Katou.
  • Humble Pie: In Chapter 44, he gets a massive slice of one after Ken calls Akechi out for murdering and hurting countless innocent people all for revenge. To rub salt to the wound, Ken also points out that Ren will be Always Someone Better to Akechi, a major Berserk Button to the latter. It was so bad that Akechi's resolve was briefly shaken.
  • Hypocrite:
    • When we see Akechi's perspective during the Casino Palace heist, he expresses his distaste towards Ren's confident attitude and flair for the dramatic, seeing it as arrogance. Of course, it's the pot calling the kettle black, as the same section shows the depths of Akechi's own arrogance, not to mention him being publicly known for showboating.
    • He dismisses the Phantom Thieves as incompetent, wondering how they took so much effort to unlock their target's palaces while he could do so relatively quickly. This is disregarding the fact that the Phantom Thieves, who were just a group of teenagers lacking significant resources to better identify and learn about their targets. Akechi, on the other hand, was spoon-fed the information by Shido, not to mention he had easy access to people's records as a police detective. Akechi was criticizing the Phantom Thieves for their limitations while ignoring the fact that much of his own successes relied on advantages given to him.
  • It's All About Me:
    • All he cares about is revenge against Shido, no matter how many people he has to kill along the way. Even his attachment to Ken and belief that he would join Akechi's side against Shido was simply Akechi projecting himself onto Ken. When Ken calls him out on how many people's lives he ruined the same way Shido did to him and his mother, Akechi does not take it to heart at all, being wholly focused on his own Inferiority Superiority Complex with Ren.
    • In their confrontation in the Engine room in Shido's palace, Futaba calls him out on this. Futaba points out that if Akechi really cared about Ken, he wouldn't have let Shido drug and torture him. Both she and Ken point out that Akechi cares for Ken as a potential ally to take down Shido, rather than for Ken as a person. Ken also points out that before he knew of their relation, Akechi basically treated Ken with the same degree of contempt as the rest of the Phantom Thieves.
  • Last-Name Basis: Before he joins in Sae's Palace, he referred to the male Phantom Thieves by "[last name]-kun" and the girls "[last name]-san". And as in canon, the Phantom Thieves call him by his surname. When we see the Casino Heist from Akechi's point-of-view, he addresses the Thieves all by their last names as well.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Chapter 37 reveals that Akechi and Ken are cousins, due to their mothers being twin sisters.
  • Meaningful Name: Tries to invoke this when picking his code name, wanting to claim "Ace" as his. Unfortunately for him, that's been Ken's for a good three months already.
  • Meaningful Rename: His birth name was Goro Himura, but when he started working for Shido, he had it changed to Goro Akechi as a reference to Kogoro Akechi, the Japanese Sherlock Holmes, as well as keep his blood-relation to his mother secret from Shido.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: A downplayed one for Akechi as he's about to assassinate Ren (or rather a cognitive version, unbeknownst to him). Due to seeing how Ren is Always Someone Better to him, Akechi hoped to get satisfaction from posturing his triumph over Ren, but his Defiant to the End expression robbed Akechi some of that satisfaction.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • A subtle example. When Haru somberly brings up her father's death, Ren noticed that Akechi had a guilty look in his eyes, deliberately avoiding looking at Haru. It's implied that Akechi felt guilty for leaving Haru orphaned.
    • Less subtly, however, Akechi is very visibly shaken and outright horrified to learn that, as a by-product of killing Wakaba Isshiki, Futaba had developed a Palace of her own, where a cognition of Wakaba wanted her dead.
  • Never Heard That One Before: When Ryuji calls him a bastard in their battle in the Engine room, Akechi sardonically muses how little effect the insult had on him, having been referred to as one his entire childhood.
  • Never My Fault: Despite somewhat regretting what happened to Futaba and Haru (see My God, What Have I Done?), Akechi doesn't change his plans at all, internally justifying the fallout of his killings as not really his fault. This is despite the fact that he previously considered killing Okumura even if Shido hadn't ordered him to. When Ken calls him out for killing Wakaba during their confrontation in the engine room, Akechi's rationalization is that Wakaba had it coming for getting in Shido's way.
  • Nothing Personal: Akechi has this sentiment after killing the SIU Director. He's just following Shido's orders.
  • Only Friend: He was Sae's only friend in the workforce, and Akechi's POV shows that he genuinely valued their friendship.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: While he kills Kunikazu Okumura under Shido's orders to tie up loose ends, Akechi notes that he would have done so regardless due to how horribly Kunikazu has treated Haru.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • According to Sae, he was the only one in the department who treated her with respect in spite of her gender. And as shown from Akechi's own perspective, those feelings are indeed genuine.
    • When Yaldabaoth merges Mementos with the real world, Akechi saves Sae from some shadows.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Chapter 37 reveals that he and Ken are cousins, whereas in canon this doesn't appear to be the case.
  • Shadow Archetype: He's basically what Ken would have turned out if he had not let go of his desire for revenge against the man responsible for his mother's death. Additionally, Ken had people in his life to help him move on whereas Akechi had no one which allowed his hatred to continue to grow. Fittingly, Ken represents Upright Justice (honesty, fairness, and accepting the consequences of one's actions) while Akechi represents Reversed Justice (dishonesty, unfairness, and refusal to accept the consequences of one's actions).
  • Sixth Ranger Traitor: As in canon, Akechi, due to working alongside his Archnemesis Dad, is plotting to betray the Phantom Thieves and assassinate Ren/Joker while making it look like a suicide.
  • Skilled, but Naive: Despite being a Wild Card with years of experience under his belt, Akechi could only use two Personas: Loki and Robin Hood. It was only through working with Ren and the Phantom Thieves that he even learned about the Wild Card's potential, which then inspires him to gather multiple Personas for his own use.
  • Smug Snake: Good lord, is he ever. His POV chapters just how arrogant he can be, constantly looking down on the Phantom Thieves. In fact, his first appearance (as Black Mask) has him constantly talk smack throughout his battle with Ken.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Unlike in the vanilla game, which this story is based on, where his fate remains nebulous, Akechi manages to survive his confrontation with the Phantom Thieves thanks to Cognitive Akechi being moved to the Shadow Shido boss fight.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: When discussing his codename, Akechi's first choice is to be 'Ace' in response to the meaning behind Ren's codename. Unfortunately for him, the name has already been taken by Ken.
  • Superior Successor: He's considered to be a better Detective Prince than Naoto, at least by the general public. Minako mentions how Naoto had a lot of difficulties finding work because of Akechi's popularity.
  • Surrounded by Idiots:
    • Expresses a contemptuous view of his teammates, commenting to himself how they waste time "bickering and cracking jokes" rather than completing the heist.
    • His working relationship with Shido also has shades of this. He was irritated by Shido wanting to immediately eliminate the Phantom Thieves right after Ren's "death" rather than wait after the election and had to convince him to back down. Ironically, this is not the case at all, given how Shido is planning to off Akechi after the election.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He thinks the Phantom Thieves as nothing more than a group of incompetent buffoons, with only a few exceptions. Little did he realize that said buffoons had outplayed him without a hitch.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • When he discovers the Phantom Thieves have infiltrated Shido's palace, Akechi is left in a panicking frenzy as he tries to track them down. When he sees Joker alive and well, after supposedly believing him dead, he's left Laughing Mad.
    • After being defeated by the Phantom Thieves, Akechi realises that his plan is now ruined. He's reduced to tears as he wrecks the safe room he's hidden out in.
  • Villain Respect:
    • He possesses one for Sae for her competence.
    • Averted with Ren. After what he believed was Ren remained Defiant to the End before Akechi kills him, Akechi admitted to himself that he would have admired them for their courage if it wasn't Ren.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: He starts taking interest in Ken, especially once he finds out that he's his long-lost cousin. Akechi even hopes that they could even work together to get revenge on Shido for what he put their family through.
  • We Can Rule Together: After finding out that Ken is his cousin, Akechi is open to the idea of the two of them taking down Shido together. In Chapter 44, he tries to make such a proposal to Ken. It goes about as well as you would expect.

    Masayoshi Shido

Masayoshi Shido

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shindou.png

An upcoming politician, Masayoshi Shido is the mastermind of several of the characters' suffering. He is also personally responsible for the Shadow Operatives becoming crippled.

  • Archnemesis Dad: As in canon, Shido is this to Goro Akechi who plans to betray him.
  • Arch-Enemy: As in canon, Shido's long list of heinous actions meant that he has attracted many enemies who all have a bone to pick with him. Nonetheless, he has personally earned the ire of these people:
    • The obvious case, much like in the game, would be Ren. After all, Shido was the very person who had put Ren on probation which resulted in him becoming a pariah. Shido's actions also fueled Ren's distrust towards authority figures and those working for the government. When Ren discovers that Shido was the one who ruined his life, he's not happy about it, to say the least.
    • To Akechi, his illegitimate son whom he had abandoned, resulting in the suicide of Akechi's mother and contributed to his miserable childhood. Akechi's agenda is wholly dedicated to seeing Shido's career go down in flames as revenge.
    • To Futaba. Shido had Wakaba murdered on his orders so he could steal her research for his own selfish purposes. And there is also the fact that Shido had his men read out a fake suicide note blaming Futaba for her mother's own death in front of her own family, resulting in Futaba's becoming a shut-in as a result of all the abuse her family put her through.
    • To Mitsuru and the Shadow Operatives as a whole. Shido prevented the Shadow Operatives from operating by blackmailing Mitsuru with knowledge of her grandfather's crimes, even threatening to confiscate Aigis and Labrys for his own purposes. Shido on his end considers Mitsuru to be his most persistent obstacle to the seat of prime minister, perhaps even more so than the Phantom Thieves. But what truly puts their enmity on a personal level is when Shido had Ken kidnapped and tortured, earning the hatred of every Shadow Operative, even Fuuka.
  • Big Bad: Like in canon, Shido serves as the human antagonist of the story. He does show to have a personal tie with Ken though, as his actions led to the fracturing of the bond between Ken's mother and Akechi's mother.
  • Bald of Evil: This is Masayoshi Shido we're talking about after all.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: Shido's main strategy in dealing with his enemies, whenever he's not pegging them for death, is to use his political influence to dig up dirt on them. He uses this to keep the Shadow Operatives out of Tokyo. When the Shadow Operatives rescue Ken right in front of Shido's face, they proceed to counter-blackmail him with a voice recording of his culpability behind the mental shutdowns to prevent him from retaliating.
  • Blackmail Backfire: He kidnapped Ken to use him as leverage against Mitsuru. Unfortunately for him, this only ends up pissing off both the Shadow Operatives and the Phantom Thieves, who retaliate by breaking into Shido's base to rescue Ken, and counter-blackmailing Shido with his confession of Wakaba's murder.
  • Breaking Speech: Gives one to Ken, pointing out how the Kirijo Group was responsible for his mother's death, in an attempt to sway him to his side. Given that Ken was doped up with drugs and the fact that Shido did have a point, it almost works.
  • Cassandra Truth: He's the first person to tell Ken that he and Akechi are cousins. But considering he was the one who told Ken, the Thieves and Shadow Operatives mostly just dismiss it as an attempt to manipulate Ken. Until Akechi confronts Ken with physical documentation proving it.
  • Evil Uncle: In a way, as he was in a relationship with Tsukiko Himura, Ken's maternal aunt. Akechi was the result of their relationship.
  • Hypocrite: In an attempt to turn Ken over to his side, Shido points out how the Kirijo Group had kept responsibility behind his mother's death a secret from him. This is despite that he did the same thing with Futaba and possibly many other victims who lost their loved ones, and unlike the Kirijo Group Shido went the extra mile by pegging the blame of Wakaba's death on her daughter in front of her family. Why? Because he could.
  • I Have Your Wife: Orchestrates Ken's capture alongside Ren's at the end of the Casino Heist, intending to use Ken as leverage against Mitsuru and her associates.
  • It's Personal: Though Shido has always been on the bad side of the Shadow Operatives given the bureaucratic red tape he imposed on the Shadow Operatives, it becomes a lot more personal after Shido abducts Ken to use as a hostage against them.
  • Kick the Dog: Alongside the atrocities that he had committed as in canon, Shido has even more moments in his name.
    • He took amusement in Akechi's shock when he reveals that both Akechi and Ken were long-lost relatives, especially considering that family is a sore spot for Akechi.
    • Sends Mitsuru a photo of Ken in his custody, trussed up in the back of a truck, purely For the Evulz.
    • But his biggest one so far was having Ken tortured and doped up with potentially lethal drugs, even having a restraining device on Ken designed to electrocute him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Shido often used his political influence to threaten people into complying with his demands, which is how he kept the red tape over the Shadow Operatives with dirt of Kouetsu Kirijo's shady activities. The Shadow Operatives use a voice recording of Shido bragging about orchestrating Wakaba's death to blackmail him into releasing Ken from his custody. With the election just around the corner, Shido could not afford to have any bad PR.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: He uses his influence to prevent the Shadow Operatives from establishing their operations in Tokyo, even trying to confiscate Aigis from them for his own use.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: When he finally makes a proper appearance in the story, he makes a rather sexist remark towards Mitsuru. He also makes an offhanded remark in his plan to use Ken as a hostage against Mitsuru of how women are weak-willed and easy to control.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Ken remarks that Shido is like a child who throws a tantrum when he doesn't get what he wants. The fact that Shido reacts against Ken's insults with violence only reinforces this.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Shido doesn't hide that he has this mindset.
  • Villainous Face Hold: Grabs Ken's chin, forcing him to look at Shido, at one point in Chapter 40.
  • Visionary Villain: This is what his cronies think of him, with the ex-Kirijo Group scientists under his employ styling him as Kouetsu's successor. In reality, he's nothing more than a Corrupt Politician who wants more power and glory for himself.
  • We Can Rule Together: In Chapter 41, he offers the captured Ken a chance to work with him as one of Shido's assassins alongside Akechi.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Has no qualms subjecting teenagers to police brutality and even torture.

    Junya Kaneshiro

Junya Kaneshiro

A mafia boss responsible for blackmailing and extorting high school students.

  • It's Personal: Once it's revealed that he arranged for Detective Nijima's death.
  • Lack of Empathy: Ken comments how disturbed he was by Kaneshiro's casual dismissal of murdering Makoto's father.
  • You Killed My Father: It's revealed that he's responsible for orchestrating the death of Makoto's father.

    Kunikazu Okumura

Kunikazu Okumura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/okumura.png
Shadow Okumura

The CEO of Okumura Foods, and the father of Haru Okumura. A member of Shido's Conspiracy, Okumura uses his position to arrange for the elimination of his competitors in order to expand his company unopposed.

  • Archnemesis Dad: To his daughter Haru.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To The Conspiracy, using his death to frame the Phantom Thieves.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: When Okumura's father's desire to help others ended up dragging the company into financial troubles, Okumura became convinced that helping others will achieve nothing.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Just like in canon, he's been pegged for death by The Conspiracy.
    The Holy Grail

Yaldabaoth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/p5_demiurge.png
Click here to see the Holy Grail
Click here to see his true form

The true mastermind behind the events of the main story.

  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Takes over the Velvet Room like in canon, though this time he imprisons not only Igor, but Theodore, Margaret and Marie as well.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: His true form is gigantic, as in canon. Ren expresses worry at seeing it, since he isn’t used to fighting enemies twenty times his height.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Retains his deep voice from canon. Ren is taken aback once he meets the real Igor due to his voice being much higher than he’s used to.
  • Final Boss: He is the final enemy the Phantom Thieves face in the story.

Other Characters

    Sae Niijima

Sae Niijima

Arcana: XX. Judgement

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sae_nijima.png

The older sister and legal guardian of Makoto, the public prosecutor in charge of the Phantom Thieves case. While she does care for her younger sister, she's hindered by her bitterness at her situation.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: She strokes the top of Makoto's head a couple of times in-story.
  • All the Other Reindeer: She's treated as such in the department solely because of her gender. She was also one in school due to her schoolmates seeing her as a teacher's pet, much like her younger sister.
  • Aloof Big Sister: To Makoto. The tensions between the Niijima sisters have yet to be resolved. Makoto longs for a more loving relationship, much like Shinjiro and Ken have.
  • Blackmail: Attempts this to Sojiro. Though unlike in canon, Futaba nurses quite a grudge on her due to this.
  • Education Mama: She very strictly stresses to Makoto that she needs to focus on her studies. Makoto notes that Sae may not like her dating Ken, due to a relationship possibly distracting her.
  • Grave-Marking Scene: Sae is implied to have done this off-scene, leaving her mother's favorite flower on the Niijima family grave.
  • Foil: Is this to Shinjiro, as guardians of their teenage charges.
  • Hello, Attorney!: A prodigy prosecutor. She's mentioned to be very beautiful, something that Ken notes when he meets her.
  • It Runs in the Family: Both played straight and Played for Laughs.
    • As much as Sae wants to deny it, a strong sense of justice runs in the Niijima family. It just takes Makoto to remind her of it.
    • When Sae's Shadow is seething about the Phantom Thieves calling her out for cheating, Sae rages on and on. Ryuji quips that a short temper runs in the Niijima family.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Sae is shocked when Ren unintentionally reveals that Makoto and Ken are now dating during the interrogation. She almost leaves the interrogation room so she can find out more, and only stops because Ren points out that she's interrogating him.
  • Only Friend: To Akechi, surprisingly, and the feeling is mutual. So much so that when Akechi chose to go into hiding to escape Shido's potential wrath after failing to stop the Phantom Thieves, he decided to turn to Sae for help.
  • Promotion to Parent: Three years ago, she became Makoto's guardian.
  • Shipper on Deck: Her cognitive version of Akechi shows that she's supportive of him and Makoto getting together. Makoto and Ken were both repulsed by this revelation. Ironic, considering Makoto starting dating Ken - who is Akechi's cousin.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Shinjiro noted that she was two centimeters taller than him, which even with high-heels is no small feat considering how tall Shinjiro is himself.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Sae is mentioned to greatly resemble her mother.
    • Inverted with her and Makoto. Shinjiro mentions that he had to look hard to see the family resemblance.
  • Teen Genius: According to Makoto, she was this when she was younger, which feeds into Makoto's feelings of inadequacy.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Sae is very clearly hurt by the revelation that Akechi is behind the mental shutdowns and psychotic breakdowns, since they've been partners for two years, and she genuinely seemed to get along with him. Akechi's POV reveals that it wasn't a lie, and while his goals take precedence, he genuinely likes Sae.
  • You Remind Me of X: Shinjiro mentions that Sae reminds him of a younger Mitsuru, back when they had first met.

    Chidori Iori

Chidori Iori (nee Yoshino)

The only (now former) member of Strega confirmed to be alive in the present and their former navigator, who became an artist after the ending of Persona 3. She is now married to Junpei Iori.

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear if her Persona has returned or not, just that some of her memories of the Dark Hour returned.
  • Amnesiac Dissonance: Downplayed: It's been stated (in chapter 43) that only some of her memories of the Dark Hour have returned, and that they were more closely related to her time with Junpei than her time with Strega. This is probably part of what's behind her happier attitude.
  • Happily Married: To Junpei.
  • High-School Sweethearts: A comment from Ken implies that she got back together with Junpei during their senior year of high school.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Averted. Though it's initially an Ambiguous Situation as to whether her memories of the Dark Hour had returned, there's never any indication she's being left out of the loop with the Shadow Operatives.
  • Out of Focus: Like her husband, she's not as involved with the main story.
  • Rhyming Names: Now that she's married to Junpei, her name is Chidori Iori.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She lived through the events of Persona 3, and got (some of) her memories of the Dark Hour back.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Understandably she is this compared to her incarnation in Persona 3 since she's not burdened by her suicidal feelings.

    Kaito and Miyuki Arisato

The illegitimate twin children of Minato Arisato and Yukari Takeba. They are both five years old upon their introduction and turn six in September. In PQ2, they appear to possess the potential to follow in their father and Aunt's footsteps not only as Persona-Users but as Wild Cards, though their age renders them incapable of producing Shadow-selves, thus their Personas cannot take a truly tangible form.

  • Ascended Extra: Minor characters in the main story, they take a more active role in PQ2, becoming Guest Star Party Members from Chapter 6 onwards.
  • Baby's First Words: Ken reveals that the twins' mutual first word was "Stupei", Yukari's Embarrassing Nickname for Junpei.
  • Badass Adorable: They both managed to awaken Personas of their own in PQ2. However, similar to Nanako from Persona 4/Persona 4 Golden, they cannot produce Shadow-selves due to their age, thus their Personas cannot take a truly tangible form.
  • Bastard Angst: Downplayed. Kaito briefly undergoes one when Akechi explained to him what a bastard meant, after overhearing some women referring to him as one. Miyuki also experiences one when a distressed Kaito comments that their mother might actually prefer that they were never born. Fortunately, they are quickly talked back to their senses by Ken, who assures them that their mother loves them.
    • While not quite falling under the "angst" category, Miyuki voices an underlying concern that because Minako isn't the same one they've known their whole lives, the version of Yukari and the other Shadow Operatives might not be the same, and because of what Akechi had told them about illegitimate children, Miyuki worries about how Yukari and the rest of their Aunts and Uncles would treat them. Thankfully, Ken is able to help lay his niece's worries to rest.
  • Children Are Innocent:
    • They are too young to understand what a bastard is, which causes problems when Akechi explains it to them.
    • More light-hearted examples happen in PQ2, being too young to understand many adult concepts such as death, such as thinking that Kamoshidaman was sent to the Shadow Realm after being defeated.
  • Combination Attack: In Persona Q2: The Ace Edition, the twins gain the power to use fusion spells (with the exception of Armageddon) which they can use to assist the heroes.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Their words can certainly cut rough, as Morgana and Akechi can ascertain. It's something that they inherited from their mother.
  • Disappeared Dad: Minato died before he or Yukari even found out she was pregnant.
  • Fan-Created Offspring: The twin children of Minato and Yukari created by the author for the story.
  • Legacy Character: Minako alludes to this somewhat in Chapter 6 of Persona Q2: The Ace Edition, wondering if Kaito and Miyuki have the potential to become Wild Cards themselves one day due to their usage of Jack Bros during the fight with Kamoshidaman.
  • Momma's Boy: Both of them absolutely adore their mother, especially Kaito. He was initially distrustful of the Phantom Thieves until he finds out Futaba is a fan of his mother.
  • Pop-Cultured Badass: In the PQ2 spin-off, the twins frequently make references to various Bland-Name Product versions of media like Jurassic Park, Meet the Robinsons, High School Musical, and even Fire Emblem: Three Houses. And thanks to their Fusion Spell ability, they are definitely badasses.
  • Shipper on Deck: They support the idea of Makoto being their aunt in PQ2.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: They were born after Minato's passing, and Yukari partly views them as proof that he loved her.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: More so with their father than their mother, both of them inheriting his hair color. Miyuki inherited her father's eyes, while Kaito inherited their mother's. The alternate version of Minako comments how much they resembled her deceased brother, without realizing that they are his alternate counterpart's kids.
  • Support Party Member: They serve as this in PQ2. As they are kids with no combat prowess, their ability to use fusion spells are focused on assisting the heroes in battles.
  • Tyke Bomb: Kaito and Miyuki are only six years old and just getting ready to enter school. And they have superpowers capable of knocking a giant rabbit carrying carrot bazookas flat on its ass, and then some.
  • When You Coming Home, Mom?: In PQ2, they tell Minako how they miss their mom due to her being busy with work abroad.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Despite only being six years old at the time and Children Are Innocent being in play, both Kaito and Miyuki are perceptive to see that the Persona Q2: The Ace Edition version of their Aunt Minako was a Stepford Smiler, and while no one knows the exact circumstances behind this, they also recognize that version of Minako isn't the same as the one they've known their whole lives. Also, Word of God has confirmed that the twins are even perceptive enough to know that Akechi is hiding... something, but they aren't sure what it is.

    Shiho Suzui

Shiho Suzui

Ann's best friend. After the traumatic events with Kamoshida that led to her Attempted Suicide, Shiho gets transferred to the countryside.

    Nanako Dojima

Nanako Dojima

Yu Narukami’s younger cousin and surrogate little sister, who is 12 years old during the story.

  • Expository Hairstyle Change: She now wears her hair in a low ponytail instead of the Girlish Pigtails she had in Persona 4.
  • Precocious Crush: Apparently had one for Ken. Yu... wasn’t amused, to say the least.
  • Wistful Amnesia: Mementos merging with Inaba stirs up some of Nanako’s suppressed memories of the TV World, which she describes as an old dream. This worries the Investigation Team, given how distressing that situation was for them.

Flashback Characters (Unmarked Spoilers)

    Tsukiko Himura

Tsukiko Himura

Tsukiko is the sister on the right.

Goro Akechi's mother, who had committed suicide before the events of the story.

  • Ascended Extra: In the games, she was only mentioned. Here, we see her appear in Akechi's flashbacks.
  • Broken Bird: The struggles of a single mother, disowned by her family, and eventually the death of her sister all took a toll on her.
  • Death by Despair: She lapsed into depression after hearing news of the death of Hikari. She committed suicide a few months afterwards.
  • O.C. Stand-in: While Akechi's mother had been mentioned in the game, her name, personality, and appearance were never given. The author gives her own spin.
  • Parting-Words Regret: During their argument, Tsukiko snaps at her sister and says that she hates her for supposedly not intervening when their parents disowned Tsukiko for her pregnancy. This results in the two of them parting on bad terms, but Tsukiko, despite regretting what she said, felt it was too late to apologize. Unfortunately, Hikari dies in an accident afterwards. Upon hearing the news, Tsukiko breaks down into tears, apologizing to her sister for what she had said.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Her death was what caused Akechi to become an assassin, wanting to exact revenge on Shido for abandoning them and causing her death.
  • Posthumous Character: She's been dead years before the events of the story took place.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Unlike in canon, it's established here that Tsukiko and Ken's mother Hikari were twins.
  • Single Mom Stripper: Was forced to turn to prostitution in order to support her son and herself.
  • The Unfavorite: Bitterly believes that she's this compared to her sister.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about her without revealing not only Akechi's true motivations but also the fact that Akechi and Ken are cousins.

    Hikari Himura-Amada

Hikari Himura-Amada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hikari_and_tsukiko.png
Hikari is the sister on the left.

Ken Amada's mother, who died as a result of Shinjiro's Persona going berserk. She was also the fraternal twin sister of Tsukiko Himura, Goro Akechi's mother.

  • Alliterative Name: Hikari Himura.
  • High-School Sweethearts: She and Ken's father were this. Unfortunately, the marriage did not last.
  • Mama Bear: Protected Ken at the cost of her own life.
  • Meaningful Name: Hikari means "light". Ken viewed her as the light of his life, until her death.
  • Motherly Side Plait: Wore her hair in a loose side ponytail.
  • O.C. Stand-in: While Ken's mother had been mentioned in Persona 3, her name, personality, and appearance were never given. The author gives her own spin.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Her death contributed to Tsukiko's suicide, which in turn caused Goro to become a killer.
  • Posthumous Character: She's dead long before the events of the story began.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: She was mentioned by Ken to be an extremely loving person all around. And from Akechi's flashbacks, she tried in vain to patch things up between her sister and their parents.
  • Warts and All: After discovering the truth behind his aunt being disowned by his grandparents for illegitimately siring Akechi, and believing that his mother did nothing to intervene, Ken begins to wonder if his mother was not as good as he thought she was. But when Futaba tells Ken to remember the good memories of his mother, Ken acknowledges that while his mother did make mistakes in the past, it won't change how he viewed her all this time: a loving mother who cares for her son.
