Not Tropeworthy: Minorly Mentioned Myths And Monsters

Go To

To-do list:

  • Since this was merged with and redirected to Small Reference Pools, examples need to be cleaned up accordingly.

    Original post
Note: This thread was proposed by Adept.

Brought up in the now-concluded discussion for Seldom-Seen Species, which saw the trope cut. It was mentioned that Minorly Mentioned Myths and Monsters is basically Seldom-Seen Species, but for mythological creatures/characters. The wick check demonstrates that this page does have the exact same issue, with a lot of baseless assertions that this creature, deity, or particular myth is rarely depicted in fiction, with varying degrees of Fan Myopia, gushing, or flat-out incorrect statements.

As with Seldom-Seen Species, this page should be cut. Maybe merge with Small Reference Pools (which explicitly defines this trope as an aversion to itself) if we want to keep the inbounds.

(Feeling like TRS is in a "Groundhog Day" Loop)

Merge or cut, leaning to the latter since examples of "unpopular folklore monsters" doesn't really suit Small Reference Pools. It mentions Sadly Mythtaken and Stock Monsters, so maybe one of them is more fitting.

Why Mi'raj and Makara even have own Internal Subtropes to begin with?

(I was the one who added the fenghuang example to Monster Sanctuary... I feel called out by the wick check.)

Anyway, [tup] for making it a redirect to Small Reference Pools.

This reminded me that I said some of these could stand alone as their own Our X Are Different tropes, so I'll probably go ahead and do that after this is called.

For now, merge.

Yeah we can yard/TLP specific monsters with enough examples.

I think a few like the Redcap in general section might be worth a send to TRS too. I dunno if it is a minor mentioned fae species /villain. I always thought they were one of the more famous.

@Amonimus: Well, it is an aversion. Small Reference Pools is about most media only making references to well-known things. So when it comes to mythological creatures and characters, stories tend to focus on famous ones, such as the Olympian gods, dragons, phoenix, faeries, things like that. Minorly Mentioned Myths and Monsters are when certain stories break out of that "constrains" and depicts less famous ones.

But as with Seldom-Seen Species, it gets very subjective whether or not a particular mythological creature/character is "minorly mentioned" and kind of depends on what kind of media the audience is exposed to.

I don't mind redirecting the trope elsewhere, but the content probably need to be mentioned somewhere in the description of Small Reference Pools.

Merge, but the main page itsepf have plenty of examples for the Al-Miraj and Makara.

Maybe those two can be spun off into two separate tropes?

Ideally, Our Monsters Are Different and its ilk are not '[monster] exists' but 'this is how [monster] are portrayed in the work'.

Triple posting to archive the wick check (and I'll probably quadruple post if I'm the one who finishes the single remaining namespace):

Wick check for Minorly Mentioned Myths and Monsters

All wicks checked except for Indices, Image Source/, and Sandboxes.
    open/close all folders
Just mentioning the creature/character with no further context
  1. Badass Driver: Pothole to "hundun".
  2. Non-Human Non-Binary: Pothole to "abada".
  3. The Bard's Tale: Nuckelavee: He's a real mythologic monster from the Orkney's islands folklore. Simply saying the mythologic origin of the creature. Also untrue as the Nuckelavee is well-known enough to have its own trope page
  4. Characters.Codex Equus Cunabala (1): Pothole to "Leucrocuta".
  5. Characters.Codex Equus Cunabala (2): He is a Leucrocuta, a Lion/Horse hybrid.
  6. Characters.Codex Equus Cunabala (3): His avatar is a Leucrocuta, a Lion/Horse hybrid. His similarities to ex-King Danu, another Leucrocuta, is what causes him to be mistaken for a family ancestor by the latter. While not confirmed, it's implied he actually modeled his avatar after the original King Danu. Little context beyond what it is.
  7. Characters.Codex Equus Equestrian Pantheon: He and his kind are based off of actual mythological Aniwye: malevolent maneating monsters with lethal musk. Nittunak was the only exception, thus why he's the only one left. Doesn't have context beyond "this character is a Aniwye".
  8. Characters.Friendship Is Magic Expanded Universe (1): Dust Devil and Cactus Rose are Abada, two-horned equine creatures from African folkore.
  9. Characters.Friendship Is Magic Expanded Universe (2): Based on a mythical creature known as a leucrocuta, a mix of lion and horse. He even has a cutie mark on his leonid flank
  10. Characters.Kirby Another Dimension: Pothole to "jinmenju".
  11. Characters.Namco X Capcom: Roughly based on Ox-Head and Horse-Face from Chinese Mythology.
  12. Characters.Pokemon Generation I Gastly To Tauros: Pothole to "obscure", referring to "jinmenju".
  13. Characters.Spice And Wolf: She's based on a "Getreidewolf" from German folklore, or more specifically would be a "Wizenwolf" which can make her claims about being a "wise wolf" border on a Stealth Pun.
  14. Characters.Temtem Species: It's based on the aqrabuamelu, a kind of scorpion-centaur from middle eastern mythology.
  15. Characters.Warhammer Chaos Dwarfs: The Lammasu native to the Dark Lands are creatures based on the lamassu of Mesopotamian myth. A mutation of the more common Great Taurus, Lammasu share the appearance of their mythological inspiriation, being giant, winged bulls with a human-like head. In contrast to the Mesopotamian lamassu, who were benevolent protective spirits, the Warhammer Lammasu are manipulative creatures that use their charisma and magical abilities to befuddle their enemies and compel other monsters, such as Wyverns and Griffons, to do their fighting for them. Lammasu are most often encountered as mounts for Chaos Dwarf sorcerers but many opponents question whether it is the rider or mount that is the master in their relationship. Might fit better in Sadly Mythtaken as the entry talks about how the Warhammer version is different than portrayed in the original myths.
  16. Characters.Witchery: The Druden originate from German folklore, where they're a kind of malevolent spirit commonly associated with witches, nightmares, and The Wild Hunt.
  17. Exalted.Tropes I To P: Furiae are Creation's version of Greek Mythology's Furies, vengeance and merciless justice given form by the Wyld, with hawklike bodies and near-human faces with sharp teeth.
  18. DarthWiki.TheNeomeniaverse: Pothole to Leshi.
  19. Literature.Dracopedia: Dracopedia: The Bestiary has quite a number, including the Enfield, the Dragon Turtle, and the Questing Beast.
  20. Recap. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic IDW Issue 89 To 92: Two of Zecora's old friends, Dust Devil and Cactus Rose, are Abada, two-horned equine creatures from African folkore.
  21. VideoGame.Horn Of The Abyss: Pothole to "Olgoi-Khorkhoi".
  22. Ninja Emaki: The Yōkai variety. While stock Yōkai like Gashadokuro and Rokurokubi are enemies, you also battle large numbers of Nobusuma - flying squirrel Yōkai - in the first stage, as does the frog-like Ōgama and the fish-like Ningyo which looks exactly like in illustrations.
  23. VideoGame. The Bards Tale: Pothole to "an actual mythological creature from the Orkney Islands' folklore". Again, not true. See note on the character's page
  24. Webcomic.Irrational Fears: The ahuizotl is a creature from Aztec Mythology.
  25. Webcomic.Bronze Skin Inc:
    • Chapter 7 features a saci, a trickster entity in Brazilian Folklore.
    • Chapter 11 shows Boitata, a giant snake in flames of Brazilian folklore.
    • In chapter 15 a tribe of Caiporas appears, a wild magical entity that protects forests and animals.
  26. WebVideo. The Kaskade Region: With the focus on the Pacific Northwest and a lot of its regional folklore, this region provides many Pokémon based on said folklore, like the nimerigar (Nomobjeka), the agropelter (Kaskadian Ambipom), the splintercat (Catteraxe), the wasgo (Worcane), and the dzunukwa/basket ogress (Golgre).

Asserts that the creature/character is not well-known
  1. A God Is You: Pothole to "an existing, albeit obscure god", referring to Zagreus.
    1. Similar potholes referencing to the character in O.C. Stand-in, CaptainObviousReveal.Video Games, Characters.Hades Zagreus, Pantheon.Legendary Beings, Pantheon.Unpopularity, Pantheon.Video Games A To M and Hades.
  2. Fantasy Pantheon: Pothole to "obscure myths" in refence to Touhou.
  3. Sadly Mythtaken: Pothole to "really obscure subjects" in refence to Shadow Hearts.
  4. Animation.Jiang Ziya: While most viewers will easily recognize Nine-Tailed as a nine-tailed fox-spirit, Four-Alike is a far more obscure divine beast from Chinese mythology — a sibuxiang.
  5. Characters.Ben 10 Villains Original Series: Ah Puch: For quite a few people, Ben 10 is likely the first time you've heard of this guy.
  6. Characters.Friendship Is Magic Dangerous Creatures: Orthros, Kerberos' lesser-known little brother, is very rarely seen outside of works that specialize in Greek mythology.
  7. Characters.Hilda:
    • Nisser are quite known in the Nordic countries, and especially Norway, but quite rare beyond that. In the folklore, they resemble a cross between gnomes and House Fey, and their highly recognizeable white beards and tall, red hats were part of the inspiration for Santa Claus.
    • Played with. Draugr are quite well-known, being a type of Norse undead, but they were not the primary inspiration for Draugen. These creatures are actually inspired by the undead remains of drowned sailors in Nordic folklore, post-christianization. They share a name, and it's generally accepted that Folkloric Draug were "descended" from Norse Draugr.
  8. Characters.Nioh Enemies And Bosses: Creatures like Ubume but mostly Waira do not get much spotlight.
  9. Film.Clash Of The Titans 1981: Before 1981 Medusa and the Gorgons were obscure monsters in Greek mythology. This statement is also almost definitely not true, as Perseus's story (whose story is all about slaying Medusa) is one of the most famous/popular tales of Greek Mythology.
  10. Characters.MCU Dimensions: All sorts of beasts from Chinese mythology populate Ta Lo, including several rarely seen in Hollywood movies, like the qilin or hundun.
  11. Characters.Monster Hunter Fifth Generation Monsters Rise: A lot of people in the West might know about the kara-kasa, but they might need to do some digging to know about the basan, which Aknosom also pulls from.
  12. Characters.Onyx Equinox: How many times have you actually seen Zapotec deities on-screen?
  13. Characters. The Northman: The Norns rarely ever show up or are even mentioned in any adaptation of Norse mythology, or any work inspired or heavily derived from it, despite being responsible for dictating the fates of humans and gods alike; it is even lesser well known that each and every god and human have their own personal Norn weaving their fates. Here, she personally appears before Amleth to remind him of his oath to avenge his father and sends Amleth on his way.
  14. Characters.Duck Tales 2017 Others: When was the last time you saw Charybdis in a cartoon?
  15. Characters.Frozen Magical Creatures: When most media need a water-based horse from The Fair Folk most tend to go with the Celtic Kelpie or literally calling it a "water horse" rather than being a Nøkk, which is truer to this setting. "When most media need" "rather than being" Through those words, the entry is implying that the creature isn't well-known.
  16. Characters.Ghosts N Goblins: Some of the enemies include some obscure mythical creatures, like sickle weasels from Japanese mythology.
  17. Characters.Hololive Indonesia Generation Three: Her dress design is actually based off Barong as she states in her debut, but the design difference and relative obscurity led to people associating her with the Madagascar penguin instead. Audience Reaction. Might be movable to Viewer Species Confusion or something similar.
  18. Characters.Lumberjanes: Let's be real here, when was the last time anyone had seen a Grootslang outside of ''The Secret Saturdays?
  19. Characters.Monster Sanctuary Species: It's based on fènghuáng, a bird from east-Asian mythology that reigns over all other birds and is described as having the five fundamental colours (black, white, red, yellow, and green), similar to how Raduga's feathers represent the four elements. Like the Tanuki, it's rarely referenced in non-Asian works. Not true. Fenghuang is called Chinese Phoenix and is about as familiar in East Asia as the Phoenix are in the West, if not more.
  20. Characters.Smite Babylonian Pantheon: A couple little-known creatures from Mesopotamian Mythology have appeared on the Season 8 conquest map as game objectives. This includes the Ugallu, a fearsome winged lion-bird hybrid, and two variants of Girtablilu (called Scorpions in-game). Tiamat can also use one of her abilities to summon Umu dabrutu (a tornado storm monster), Kusarikku (a bull-man) and groups of Mušḫuššu (serpent-dragons).
  21. Them's Fightin' Herds: Longmas aren't seen in too many other media, and Them's Fightin' Herds is one of the few that does.
    1. Repeated in VideoGame.Thems Fightin Herds.
  22. ComicBook.Hilda: Almost every creature seen in the comic and series are based on Scandinavian folklore, which is little known outside of the Nordic countries.
  23. Creator.Gaijin Goombah: Many of his videos center on obscure monsters from mythology, especially when he takes about Pokemon. One example is his video on Exeggutor where he talked about three different mythical trees that grow human heads to see which was most likely the inspiration behind exeggutor. Yeah, it's probably the Jimenju.
  24. Film.Oily Maniac: To date, this is the sole non-Malaysian movie to reference the orang minyak mythos.
  25. Film.Shang Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings: You might recognize the fenghuang, Asian Lion Dogs, Kirin, and huli jing, but when was the last time you saw Morris (a hundun) in popular media?
  26. Castlevania: Could give Shin Megami Tensei a run for its money. A lot of the monsters the vampire hunters confront are incredibly obscure mythical beasts and cryptids like the mushussu, flying humanoid, rusalka, and chonchon. This also includes rarely utilized demons from demonology like Andramelech, Stolas, Astarte, and Forneus.
  27. Literature. In Cryptid: The series features several lesser-known cryptids/mythical creatures, such as Fūri, Waheela, Laidly Worms, Ahool, and Caladrius, alongside ones the author appears to have invented herself, such as the Johrlacnote , Madhura, and the Fricken.
  28. Literature. The Faerie Queene: A couple obscure creatures like the ziffius, the wasserman, and the sea-satyre are mentioned in the catalogue of sea monsters in the last canto of the book.
  29. Literature. The Secrets Of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel: When was the last time you even heard of Coatlicue, Tsagaglalal, Cernunnos, or Areop-Enap? Or the Lotan, Genii Cucullati, or Torbalan?
  30. Manga.Dragon Goes House Hunting: Alongside well-known beings like dragons, elves and dwarfs are lesser-known ones like the Hraesvelgr (based on an eagle-shaped jotunn from Norse Mythology) and the Graiae.
  31. Manga.Ge Ge Ge No Kitaro: Quite a lot of stories focus on rather obscure monsters, and not just from Japanese mythology. When was the last time you saw creatures from Malaysian mythology in anything other than Shin Megami Tensei?
  32. Manga.Interspecies Reviewers': Besides the classic elves, fairies, halflings, demons, angels, etc. there are rarer fantasy creatures like will-o-the-wisps and undines. The intro of the anime also has a cameo of a non-sapient al-mi'raj. Pretty sure will-o-the-wisps and undines aren't that uncommon.
  33. Manga. The Keeper Wants To Build A Zoo In Another World So He Tames Monsters: One of the magical creatures Ikuhara finds is the Al-Miraj, a rabbit-like creature with a unicorn horn.
  34. Podcast.Residents Of Proserpina Park: In addition to the more famous creatures, Residents of Proserpina Park makes a point of chining a light on lesser known creatures from mythology and folklore. Among other things, there have been appearances by the aitvaras of Lithuanian Folklore, aswang and manananggal of Filipino Mythology, the ahuizotl of Aztec Mythology, and the vetala of Hindu Mythology.
  35. Recap.Hercules The Animated Series S 1 E 23 Hercules And The Phil Factor: The catoblepas is a lesser-known monster mentioned by Greek writers. It's an African bull-like beast with a deadly gaze and lethal breath.
  36. VideoGame.Immortals Fenyx Rising: While the game does cater to popular monsters from Greek Mythology — namely gorgons, harpies, Cerberus, and Chimera — it also features some more obscure monsters such as Gegenees and the Hecatoncheires, even Typhon himself is rarely mentioned in modern media, with the Big Bad title usually going to Hades instead.
  37. VideoGame.Lycanites Mobs: The mod puts in some super obscure mythical beasts, like the Aglebemu from Native American lore, the Jengu from Central African mythology, and the Yale from old medieval bestiaries.
  38. Monster Super League: Has delved into more obscure pantheons and folktales for inspiration, such as the barometz tree.
  39. Smite
    • This game is probably the first time the Hindu demon Bakasura has appeared in any sort of media, let alone a video game. Highly doubtful. There are probably numerous retelling of the myth in media before this.
    • Whilst most people know about the kappas, not many are as familiar with their ruler Kuzenbo. He's still just a Kappa.
    • While they are not seen, the item Telkhine’s Ring references the race known as the telkhine from Greek mythology; dog headed fish people who lived on the island of Rhodes and practiced black magic.
    • The Season 8 Conquest map brings in some creatures from Mesopotamian Mythology as game objectives, including the Girtablilu (called “Scorpions” in-game) and the winged lion monster Ugallu.
  40. VisualNovel.Lands Of Fire: For starters the main antagonists are two deities/spirits that rarely get mainstream attention. Then there's a plethora of mythological creatures like the Dulagal and the Papinijuwari, the Yuin Ethnic God Daramulum and the Ninya, the ice spirit of Artilla.

    Has some in-universe lampshading
  1. Recap.Duck Tales 2017 S 3 E 10 The Trickening: Webby's Halloween costume is Balor, the one-eyed demon from Irish mythology. Lampshaded when the triplets and the monsters fail to identify her costume.

    Other
  1. Small Reference Pools: Listed as an Aversion to this trope.
  2. Unconventional Learning Experience: Used as an in-line description for Rick Riordan's works.
  3. ShoutOut.Interspecies Reviewers: Directs the reader to the trope page for more information about the al-mi'raj.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.
